The first song was unpleasant to listen to, so I was pleasantly surprised when some songs where pretty nice. Still not music I will listen to again.
This could have been 30 min but even that might be a stretch. Not horrible I just dont love being yelled at for an hour.

Not sure there's ever a need for an extended period of high pitched air raid siren wail. There were a few other points of unnecessary, slightly painful sound, but for the most part this album was fine if definitively not our cuppa tea

Once I’d got through the shouting on track one I did like a bit of the guitar on track two and then I gave up.
Noise. Just noise. Occasionally, a track began with a bit of musicality, but, then more noise. And not fun noise, eitger. To be fair, I listened to the whole 'effing mess and it's just noise.

This is a tough one. I like this genre, and while I’ve never heard Drive Like Jehu before, it transports me to a time when I was listening to similar music. There’s nostalgia here for sure. But this just isn’t getting over the threshold for me to like it for some reason. Not a single song got it’s hooks into me, and for that to not happen over the course of an hour 10 that’s not good.
Nope. I have a friend who's in a hardcode band; he's great. I went to one of his shows and had a good time; the people in the crowd were very friendly. I like this album cover image with the rough ink drawing. I do not like the music. Too shouty and harsh.

A few standout tracks but overall a little too devoid of melody, I know I know it's punk rock and I like a lot of punk rock alright, and I know part of the deal early on was purposefully making noise but I don't have to enjoy all of it. 2.5

1994, the year I was born and also the year this album was released. Now, 30 years on - unlike myself, Yank Crime has aged nicely. Its punk, antiestablishment and-all- around “who cares” themes are present across all the tracks. It’s loud and in your face. Albeit this would not be my first choice, however, listening to this album does inspire me to stick it to the “man”. Notable standouts, Sinews, Hand over Fists and Golden Brown.

I did not care for this. Was much more interested in the instrumentals then the music. A low two. Bullet train to Vegas was kinda fun?
If you take the vocalist out of the equation this is actually decent music, but my god is the singing difficult to listen to.
Interesting that their compilation album was called Head Start to Purgatory. I feel that is very apt.
I'll grant them this, there's more going on musically than grates the ear. But what the fuck. I'm going to guess Scott liked it, but this is some jackoff journalist's flex to show how eclectic they are. Jehu drives like a noisy asshole. Bet he crashed his chariot into a tree.

Angsty screeching has never sounded more mediocre. When it leans more into alt rock than punk, its ok but when its more punk it just comes across very amateurish and chaotic. About halfway through every song started to meld together and I could not really differentiate them. 4/10

Screaming anger like Kurt on In Utero, does not have the melody like Nirvana which is what set them apart from most other punk/hardcore/grunge bands. Kurt could put a melody into any song however angry. This is more hit and miss and some of the songs are way too long. This will take multiple sittings 😔
These guys can rock but strange choices designed to be very annoying.
If ever there was an album begging for 2 min songs and 28 min runtime this is it. Over an hour is just ridiculous. This is skating near 1* territory but I did like some of the instruction so I’m rounding up. 1.75/5

Noise/post-hardcore/emo album from the mid 1990s - this genre is really not my thing in general. This album didn't have much melodies, it is just too aggressive music, but it was somewhat cohesive and more bearable than many other albums in the genre. After the first 10 minutes I thought it would be a 1 but overall it was a bit better than that, so it's a 2 from me.

My reluctance to getting into this genre has never been about the instrumentals. Honestly, I really appreciate what I hear in that regard on this album. The vocals are where I struggle. Totally unconnected but I had shingles jab at doctors yesterday and like last time I had one reacted badly overnight. Woke up this morning very delicate so this was not the album to suit how I felt. Needed ambient but got the complete opposite x100 with this. Even trying to put myself in a place where my physical condition didn’t matter, I’m afraid that I couldn’t connect with this. If the shouty lyrics had been dialled down a touch I could have found bits to my liking. Some nice guitar and bass interplay at times were good. But that voice!!! I did persevere turning my speaker down low to suit my mood but then everything sounded the same. A low level drone which did not suit the music but today I was unable to play it loud. 2/5 14/1/25
I like punk but this album was a slog. It is a shame for punk music that albums like that are on the list.

Sorry, but this album is crap. It just sounds like self-indulgent noise without even a half-hearted attempt to resemble listenable music. I love the Ramones so I'm not averse to punk music, but this sounds like high schoolers banging on their instruments to get out their teen angst. I'll give 'em a 2 for making the effort, but this album is not worthy of this list.

Yank Crime is an album I didn't enjoy personally but I felt enriched after listening. Yes, it was weird, but I could tell that Drive Like Jehu influenced others. The instrumental parts, which frankly was their biggest strength, delved into the progressive territory. The post-punk reminded me of Green Day, who were just getting their start at this time. In fact, this album's release in 1994 pre-dates that emo music movement in the aughts!
I was intrigued to give this a listen initially for one reason: I had always attributed the emo movement to the 2000s, but Wikipedia was discussing this album in terms of the emo genre. Sure enough, upon listening, there were definitely some sounds present that was post-punk bordering on what would become emo; I have no doubt that this album played a part in inspiring the emo sound. This album was interesting, but it didn't really capture me. It was probably about a 2.5 for me, but I don't think it did enough for me to round it up.

i mean, i dont think this album is deserving of a one. I kinda like some parts of it... but mostly it just isn't my cup of tea. But overall, tracks are too long and not a huge fan of the scratchy guitar solos. It's fine for a few seconds here and there (think Rage Against the Machine), but overall the album just kinda pushes me away. I do really like the track Hand over Fist, but the rest of the album I could probably give a miss as a listen through. Give me segments of it and well, we're good.
I actually really liked it for what it was. I don’t think it’s to the level of what an average album on this list should be though. I think the guitar riffs are really the highlight of this album for me. The singing is part of the mood, but I couldn’t tell you a single lyric. I feel like this is the kind of album that you would play all the way through working at a chop shop. Idk I kinda like it.
It’s a shame these guys didn’t stick around for much longer after this album, I can definitely see the influence they would have had on bands that would get their start shortly after this release. My only issues are that it’s lengthy and not too many of the songs grab your attention and draw you in. Gonna go with a two because I just don’t think I’ll be listening to this one again anytime soon.
I know of this band, but I they never made it into my rotation. I could go down the post-hardcore/punk/emo genre for days, but this band never hit the spot for me; as there are so many other offerings that outshine these guys. Fugazi, Jawbox, Husker Du, Jawbreaker, Texas is the Reason, Sunny Day Real Estate - I could go on and on.

Album 558 of 1001 Drive Like Jehu. - Yank Crime (1994) Rating : 2 / 5 I like some punk, though I go more for the 70s era. This is mostly noise, in my opinion. A couple of bright spots but overall just meh.
Weird album to appear on the list. I know so many better hardcore bands from early 90s, what is so special about this one? All I can hear is that it's a very grounbreaking and influential band, but I just don't hear it. Pretty disappointing and boring record, not my style.

Noisy music is weird, some groups pull it off but others don't really hold much interest. This is a bit more of the latter. I didn't really like it.

One of the things I appreciate about Fugazi is they kept their music to a reasonable length. There was no reason for a 9 minute song - they got their vision out in 4 minutes. Drive Like Jehu makes the mistake of thinking they could maintain my attention for over an hour with 12 songs. I do like the genre but this is a real slog to get through.
I know this is supposedly an import album in the evolution of hardcore punk to emo, but it didn't do much for me. Sounded more like Nirvana outtakes. Certainly not what you would think of as emo. 2/5
Some very cool instrumental parts in several songs, but as a whole it lacks good songs, and the vocals annoys me more than it pleases me. At the Drive-In took this formula and sound, and added what lacks here, which makes this record important in an evolutionary sense, but this is not a record id want to listen to again.
I understand this is possibly the best hardcore album ever. But for the uninitiated, listening to it sucks.

Track selection is very important when putting together an album. I may have liked this one a little more (meaning, at all) if it had been 20 to 30 minutes shorter. I can understand hard-core as a genre a little bit. But an hour of screaming, mumbling, and “grump singing“ is just a bit too much for me.
I think I might like country music as a genre better than this. I'm sure this is fine but it is not my cup of tea. I made it to track 8, "Human Interest". Anyway, I'll pass on the rest. No judgement here. This is just not for me.

Fun to listen to for a while but wore out its welcome for me. If we can call this garage emo rock or punk, it doesn't hold much I'm interested in. I'll listen to a wall of noise from time to time, mostly in metal, but not this kind. Not interested in the screaming vocals, the grating feedback, the repetitive song design. Rome Plows was fun (had the benefit of being the first song). Luau and Super Unison were a 1-2 punch of 'okay I'm done with this album' for me. But I did listen through it.
This felt raw, not to mention a little whiny. Dude is clearly ANGRY about something. I wasn't able to tell what exactly from the lyrics. The bass has a nice Johnny Cash twang. That's the best I can offer I'm afraid. It fizzles out in to guitar wank.

Wondering if there’s some sort of glitch with this exercise and albums from the 3003 albums are popping up. Not a big fan of the San Diego music scene but everyone needs to start somewhere. Album sounds a bit like one loooong repetitive song.
Yankee Crime Never heard of Drive Like Jehu. It reminds me of when I tried to like At the Drive In, and pretended for a bit that I did. Struggling to find much to say. It is what is and is fine for this type of music. Some nice guitar parts, some good moments and grooves. I liked Sinews. Can kind of hear a bit of surf music in there, and some good rhythmic moments, but it is ultimately quite formulaic 90s slightly moany very American sounding alternative/punk. Only listened once, I couldn’t really see what I’d get out of further listens. It’s not terrible but it’s not particularly interesting or different enough to feel like making more of an effort with it 🤷 ⭐️⭐️
As someone who came of age in the early 00’s and never really understood why so many people were into “emo” music like Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday, this album brought back a lot of those same feelings. I felt like Steve Carrell’s character in Anchorman for a lot of this album: LOUD NOISES!!!! I’m into vocalists that many people consider unpleasant to listen to — Robert Smith, Billy Corgan, John Lydon in PiL, etc. I’m also into experimental rock that a lot of people find unpleasant, like the aforementioned PiL. This music combines all the worst parts of that music — discordance, aggression, atonality — with none of the redeeming qualities — deep lyrics, unique social commentary, vulnerability, introspection about one’s shortcomings. It’s just a lot of shrill yelling of very surface level and trite ideas, combined with a lot of aggressive music that sounds like the band doesn’t always know how to play their instruments. I feel like this kind of music is the soundtrack for a very particular kind of person — lower middle class cishet white guy who’s very angry about everything but isn’t sure why. He’s read a Wikipedia article (or whatever predated it in the early 90s) on libertarianism and has decided to make it his whole personality. He’s emotionally constipated and doesn’t understand why most girls don’t like him (when he brings nothing to the table), and he uses gay as an insult with his friends. He enjoys mosh pits as a way to get out his anger, because some men will do literally anything except go to therapy. The first half of the album is pretty unbearable. After Luau it gets a bit better, but I still wouldn’t really choose to listen to this. It’s like punk music, but make every track over 7 minutes long. No. The human body is not meant to have that much cortisol coursing through it for that long. Super Unison isn’t bad once you get past the obnoxious emergency broadcast intro sound (why does it need to be 7 minutes long?) New Intro is kind of cool — sounds like it could be a Tool song (I don’t think they’re that good musicians though). I found myself thinking that a lot while listening to the album — "This kind of sounds like Smashing Pumpkins but not as good," "This kind of sounds like Tool but not as good," "This kind of sounds like Pink Floyd, but not as good." I'll give it a 2/5 because there are a couple tracks I didn't find completely unbearable. But I kind of feel bad about giving Slayer a 1 and rating this higher.

I understand what it’s going for but i think I really have to be in a mood for this genre. Songs felt too long and blended for me at points especially since the singing mainly stays in the same exact range. I couldn’t understand anything lyrically. The album improved for me at the second half. My standout was Super Unison. Cover Art is decent.

This was our second post hardcore of the week, and not the better one. Lots of "noise" and not much to gain your attention. Seemed sloppy and loud, and that's about it.
Sounds like skater punk met grunge in an alley and nobody won the fight. It’s not bad, but not good either.

In a nutshell: killswitch disengage Can hear the California punk influence, but that's about it. Where are the "punch in the guts" moments users are referring to? The songs are unnecessarily long and don’t lure me in. I reckon Yank Crime might win over fans of post-punk/post-hardcore, so I'll give it that. Overall: 3/10

This is exactly what I would imagine garage punk to sound like. It thrashes, it’s loud, it doesn’t make much sense. Overall this just felt like what every person was trying to do in the 90s and came up short of being nirvana. Overall I wouldn’t revisit this but it’s better than some albums on this list. 4.1/10
It says the band toured for the album and then quietly disbanded. I wonder if that's because they heard their music. I'm also seeing a note that this album was credited as starting a music scene in San Diego. I wonder if we will then get albums that kick started music in other towns. That would be a cool separate list. But for this list, I had a lot of skips and irritations whether it was a continuous guitar pick or some distortion sound. My ears were not a fan.

It is a raw album. It's that logical next step when you mix punk and grunge to create the bases for emo. So I can understand it's significance. With that being said - the songs are way too long for the genre and the instrumental parts are often repetitive and don't accomplish much.
So, this may well be a marvelous example of its genre, but personally I don’t ever enjoy being screamed at unintelligibly for an hour. My favorite part was thinking that he was screaming “raw clams!” for the first six minutes.
I listened to this after watching the 2 hour 50 minutes Taylor Swift Eras movie, which was not particularly compatible with this album. So I am pretty sure this was not optimal timing. I didn’t enjoy this much…

Nothing really stands out for me on this but I do quite enjoy some of the riffs.
Decent, could've been amazing if it wasn't distractingly loud and occasionally overlong.

This album opened as a 1 for me but then managed to claw its way up to maybe a mid 2. At first it was the typical annoying hardcore bullshit and luau was probably the worst of this but then super unison and new union actually broke up the unrelenting noise for a bit and it was actually alright. Overall it still made me physically uncomfortable by the end like these overlong hardcore albums do but it at least doesn’t deserve a 1. Also the Spotify artist banner of this band is the most white suburban dad “getting some buddies together to mess around on guitar” core I’ve ever seen.

I was sure I was going to hate this from basically the first note, but then it grew on me a little. It's a decent thrash-punk-metal album, but I'm not sure there is anything special about it. Seems like a flash-in-a-pan band made a flash-in-the-pan album. Enjoyable - but, did I have to hear it before I died? No.

I was listening to this album as I was doing housework and then had to put in on pause when I got a phone call... and never started listening to it again, nor do I have a desire to do so. With other albums I didn't like I could at least put them on in the background and not be too bothered, but I'm pretty sure this one elevated my blood pressure. There were a couple of instrumental sections that weren't bad so I'll give it credit there. 1.5/5, rounded up to 2.
Not my favorite punk music, but not as bad as I originally thought. A few of the songs were just too much, but I enjoyed the two slower ones (New Intro and Sinews). The rest of it was pretty average to me. Not something I would go out of my way to listen to. Nothing added to list. 4/10
Little too experimental, not for me
Damn, this is intense. I can take a song or two, and I appreciate the commitment to a sound, but damn - hard to take almost an hour of it (more than an hour with the bonus tracks, which I didn't realize were bonus tracks right away). Not totally convinced this belongs on the list, as the second and final album from a band that disbanded shortly after, and who has ever heard of them?
The first 20 seconds of 'Super Unison' had me thinking my headphones were broken

Hate to say it, but it really was just some noise. A tad better than garage rock, but they all sounded the same. You could pick one song off the album and claim to have heard them all. Not to say that that one song is bad. It’s a pretty good album to just put on and forget about while working or exercising or something. 2/5
Very impressively played, to maintain that level of intensity is super hard. But too aggressive and shouty for these sucker-for-a-melody ears.

2/5. It’s an okay punk album. Some good guitar work but not super engaging. The long songs do drag on and the short ones don’t feel distinct enough.
I couldn’t get through all of this but what I did hear wasn’t working for me.
Pretty brutal, but not as bad as I was expecting. I think the fact that the songs aren't all in the one minute range is a big plus for me.

Never heard of them before. It's very loud, aggressive, and frustrating to listen to at times. However there were a couple tracks on here that I think may have some potential. I'm going to give this a second listen through and see if those songs can salvage my overall opinion of this, which isn't very high.

What an odd name for a band, for an album, featuring straightforward but yet inexplicable album art. So, no idea what to expect. Ah, noise. I like some of what's going on guitar-wise. But I'm finding it too relentless. Favorite: Bullet Train to Vegas. Also "Luau" is a fun word, isn't it?

very heavy. good distorted guitars, raw vocals. solid bass that grounds otherwise chaotic arrangements - reminds me of duff mckagan. very noisy and grating, i am sure it would really appeal to someone who enjoys that sorta stuff. made me want to listen to appetite for destruction (which i immediately did after finishing this project)

I enjoy the musical side of this album. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals but it isn't too bad and is very fitting for the genre. My biggest gripe with this is the length of the songs. 2 songs over 9 minutes and another two over 7 is a bit much. Just gets stale after a little. I really like the first 4 and a half minutes on Luau but after that there were still 5 more minutes to suffer through. Sinews however I think does justify the length.

Musically, they had some decent stuff but I wasn’t a fan of the vocals and many of their songs just sounded like noise.
I recognize it takes talent to scream in key but I also don’t enjoy listening to it.
-1.5 ⭐️ for Rick Froberg’s vocals. I’m sorry Rick because I think people who are fans of the music and the band like your style of vocal. The vocals just ruin this album for me, which is disappointing because I do like the music quite a bit.

Algunas veces el cantante me recuerda al de "At drive-in" y por eso se va a salvar y le voy a dar 2 estrellas. Sinceramente, este disco no es imprescindible solo me gustó "Hand over fist".

At teams quite creative, but generally quite grating and meandering. Doing something difficult with a guitar, or something that is not easily emulated, does not mean that it is good or elegant.
Music is fine, but ruined by bad vocals and vocal mastering. If you are going to commit to punk style raw vocals, the music has to be equally shitty for it to work. Highlight track: 2

This album starts off like a tornado and smacks you in the chops. It’s loud and brash and in your face. It’s thrashy and punky and a little bit screamy. Normally this combination would induce an excited curiosity from myself and these tracks did just that...but that was all. I just can’t find anything worthwhile or standoutish. The songs speed along happily enough, but leave you feeling unsatisfied and with an empty void. 2 Stars!

1.4/5 I unfortunately I didn't really like this album. It seems a lot of reviewers said that it's a struggle at first but once it clicks, it clicks. I wish I had time to keep listening to this album but I don't, but maybe in the future I'll give this the time it needs.
Man, remember when music deemed good (i.e. this list) was the music that sounded good? What happened, Dimery? The minimalist album art, mention of the genre "post-hardcore", and low streaming numbers do not inspire much hope in the listener. If Yank Crime ends up being good, it'll be a pleasant surprise, and one should still believe that it absolutely does not belong on such a high-calibre list. Unfortunately, though Drive Like Jehu gives us a surprise, it's far from pleasant. As another user beautifully described it: " I don't know what to say other than this sucked hugely. Just noise and screaming from the get-go... There is no reason this made anyone's top 1001 other than shock value. This is crap and sounds like an album they gave away at their show where they played in front of 35 people on a Tuesday night. Every song sounds essentially the same, 100 mph and screaming nonsensical lyrics over and over." Here Come the Rome Plows starts off with an experimental approach to rock, placing what could be a pretty good idea for a rhythm behind a thick layer of noise that can't quite decide on a key centre. The tale of how not to compose or record music if you want anybody to enjoy it. It's extremely understandable that this is by far the most popular track on the album (sitting at 2.1 million streams on Spotify), because most people probably listened to it for a minute or two before giving up on the whole record. Do You Compute is definitely an improvement – at least we get thrown a guitar melody that sounds like it could've been devised by a legitimate musician. Nice guitar riff (though it gets old fast) and some cool nods to emo rock with the vocals, particularly in the middle section, but the rest of the song is deliberately bad. They aren't even trying to hide it. And all these 5-star reviewers are falling for the lie. Golden Brown experiments with a lighter, more punky mood that, for the most part, works. It still leaves a lot to be desired in terms of melody, hooks, any memorable parts, any form of album progression (all songs have very similar energy so far). Luau doesn't change that, and despite the many reviews suggesting this one'll change your life, my life feels pretty darn static right now listening to this 9-minute slog. At least it respects the rule of long songs: that is, switch it up, dang it. Section 2, beginning about halfway through, removes the dense, overbearing texture of the distorted rhythm guitar, replacing it with a sort of improvisational vocals-and-drums section that ends up being the most listenable stretch of music on the album thus far. The guitar solo starts off decently but verges off into noise rock, and we're just a little too late into the 90s for that genre to be considered revolutionary. I didn't realise just how horrifically bad the vocals were until I was handed a slightly better rendition of them in Super Unison. Unfortunately the rest of the instruments fail to deliver on anything memorable – not even one single melodic idea I can recite to my friends to convince them this band is worth a single second of their time. Such is Yank Crime, I suppose. New Intro then, bizarrely, squeaks its way into the upper tier of this album for being surprisingly passable as a sort of ambient piece. Lacking those vocals, it turns out, is pretty helpful for this band. New Math, Human Interest, and (later) Hand over Fist are pretty uninteresting overall – reminiscent of some grunge stuff from earlier in the decade, but clearly lesser on harmonic and melodic grounds. (Cool outro to Hand over Fist, though.) Sinews starts promisingly with a series of gloomy-yet-chill guitar ideas, before exploding into atonal material typical of the rest of the album. New to the mix are some high-pitched synthetic whistles (à la Sheer Heart Attack, Queen, 1977), and they're annoying as heck. Dang it, Drive Like Jehu, don't give me hopes and dreams of good music if you're going to crush those dreams seven minutes later. The final song, Bullet Train to Vegas, easily makes my highlights list simply because it's the last, and shortest, track on the album. Also, it makes me think of Nirvana's Territorial Pissings and the Monkees' Last Train to Clarksville (both excellent songs). Easily 1 star, and it's not close at all. I would give it fewer if I could – to reflect my (lack of) willingness to listen to any more of this type of music, and also to counterbalance the shockingly numerous 3-, 4-, and 5-star reviews. Another one I’ve never heard of. By the sound of it, a weird entry. Loud yelling punk. Might be too early in the morning for this. Just a muddled loud obnoxious sound. Hate it early on. Why are the songs SO LONG. 7 minute angry rock jammer. Why. Some of the more straight forward punk songs are okay but it’s still just too noisy. It seems to grow into a sound that’s less annoying to me but it’s never something I really enjoy much. I don’t mind the sound of Luau, but it’s a song that overstays its welcome by a few minutes. This is going to be a 1. Not for me. There’s some flashes of interesting stuff over the course of the album but it’s all too long and overall don’t like the loudness of this sound. It’s muddled ugly guitars and an annoying yelling vocal style I don’t care for. In instances when there’s some interesting music, it doesn’t last long or it’s forgotten.

Awful noise, awful vocals
I’d never heard of them, and theirs is not a style of music I like. I couldn’t listen past the first few songs (and I skipped through each of those). Musically interesting, but another album ruined for me by screaming and yelling vocals. I don’t think I’ll like what I assume will be future hardcore, post punk albums either. But we shall see.

This was absolutely dire. It was too long. The mix was dreadful, making the vocal barely audible - which was probably a blessing as, when it was audible, it was terrible. The sheer amount of feedback startled my dog on more than one occasion. Awful.
They ruined some interesting musical ideas with whiny screaming over everything. It’s bad enough when this shit is 2 minutes long. But the fact that half of the songs are longer than 5 minutes makes this one an awful listen.
