Enjoyed the music a lot at times, I was really vibing out!! The screaming and screeching really harshed my buzz and made my dogs upset ☹️

Brilliant, brutal and unquestionably influential. I missed them when they were first around, only aware of them being spoken of in hushed reverential tones. I was massively into Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses back in '94 so am kicking myself I missed Drive Like Jehu. Anyway this is a fantastic album

Rips, heavy duty punk/emo, a tad to screamy
I understand what it’s going for but i think I really have to be in a mood for this genre. Songs felt too long and blended for me at points especially since the singing mainly stays in the same exact range. I couldn’t understand anything lyrically. The album improved for me at the second half. My standout was Super Unison. Cover Art is decent.

Straight hated it.
Erratic and hyperactive is how I would describe this to anyone who hasn't heard At the Drive-in. If you have heard At the Drive-in, I'd say subtract a few levels of hyperactivity and crazy babbling lyrics from them and you'd have this record. Pretty good shit if it's what you like.

It's safe to assume that At The Drive-In were fans of this album as you can hear it's influence all over their albums from their original run (Acrobatic Tenement to Relationship Of Command). I missed these DLJ during their heyday, but they're going to be rotation going forward for sure.

Another one of those albums that comes very close to something I like, but doesn’t quite coalesce into something I can definitively say I enjoyed. Here, while I liked the punky energy and creative spirit, I think the sheer manic chaos lost me a bit.
Fantastic album from Drive Like Jehu. It's a great post-hardcore record full of passion, energy, intensity, and incredible noise. It brings together a perfect balance of hardcore, punk, no-wave, and post-rock where the quieter parts are a bit Slint-like and the hard energetic parts are very reminiscent of Fugazi from the same era. No wonder this is slowly starting to gain a justified reputation as an overlooked masterpiece of its time.

I really enjoyed the rawness of this alternative punk album. Never heard of them before today. There's definitely some complexity to their sound and style once you get past the opening song. I'm not sure if I would have appreciated it as much when it was released in 1994, but I'm definitely enjoying it now.

This was our second post hardcore of the week, and not the better one. Lots of "noise" and not much to gain your attention. Seemed sloppy and loud, and that's about it.
Sounds like skater punk met grunge in an alley and nobody won the fight. It’s not bad, but not good either.
I had high expectations, but despite intriguing music, the album felt like it lacked proper highlights.
The real crime was subjecting me to this singer's yelpy vocals for over an hour. The only track I would ever consider listening to again is "New Intro", which was a halfway decent instrumental track. The rest here is a slam dunk in the trash bin

Do You Compute and Super Unison have TERRIBLE beginnings for normal ears. Not fun, not enjoyable. Don’t care how good it is after, having my cringe for the first 30 seconds is a strategy. Also, this music raises my heartbeat. Not really what I’m looking for when I’m trying to get through a Wednesday.

Opening with a decent thrash punk song that I have to say is twice as long as it should be. I'm a fan of long songs but this does not contain 6 minutes worth of song. If I want to stick it on twice I will but that's my decision. Fugazi mentioned a lot, in the book and the reviews. But Fugazi had an incredible rhythm section which often lead the songs, marking them out. Does that happen here? On first listen I turned it off and put Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs on again instead. Returning to it much later in the day, I'm sad I didn't encounter this record back in 1994 as I would probs have loved it. It's not punk, it's post-hardcore. Ok. So long songs are de rigour. It's quite ahead of its time, I don't know too much sounding like this around this time. Something of a precursor to At the Drive In. Maybe Swans? Although I didn't really listen to them. Once I settled into it I really enjoyed. The more epic tracks are just that, and really stand out. Luau.
Nice cross rhythms on the first track. Love the 2nd - quirky Pearl Jam in 3. Great 3rd. And 4th. 5th. 6th. Yeah, all the rest. Whatever this fellow is saying at the top of his voice, he means it. 2nd listen (!) for lyrics. 1. Shades of California Uber Alles. 2. Do You Compute? One of the best "fuck you"s I've ever heard. 4. Nihilistic anger. Grrr! Favourite riff: 9. Sinews 6:42 2nd favourite 10. Hand over Fist 3:35 (reminds me of the end of Unsung by Helmet). Lots of loud repetitive riffs and noise, which I've not been into recently, but I heard this early morning while writing an essay and it had the effect of background brown noise - the odd rhythms helped with this. Nice contrasts. Don't know how many more listens I'll give it, but I really liked this one. Yep, yep.

This is a really cool album that was made much earlier than I would have expected, given the sound. It's noisy and abrasive, but all the songs have this incredible energy, and they flow from one to the next well. Really cool album that didn't get the recognition it deserved in its time 4/5

When the first song hit, I honestly thought I wasn’t in the mood for this album today. However, I was quickly won over by the sheer complexity of “Yank Crime.” It’s an album that grabs you and refuses to let go. The levels of aggression and intricacy in this album are remarkable. It’s like a rollercoaster ride through a musical maze. The influence it had on emo music in the 2000s is evident, but unlike the emo we all got tired of, “Yank Crime” feels fresh and invigorating. In some ways, it reminds me of Slint’s “Spiderland.” Both albums keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what unexpected turn the music will take next. Drive Like Jehu’s raw energy and unconventional song structures make this album a standout in the post-hardcore genre. My only gripe is it’s just too long and you do feel exhausted by the end, 4 stars.

3 - I want to like this more, but I tend to get bored with post-hardcore, and I did find myself losing focus towards the middle with this. First song was pretty good. I really liked the vocals here. He does the screaming and shouting very well. Again, I wish I liked this more. I still think it's a pretty cool album.
When it’s not screeching in my ear or playing an air raid siren it has some alright moments. 3/10

Das ist ein richtig klassisches Punk crush Album mit einer herausfordernden Stimme des Leadsängers. Je nach Tagesform entweder cool oder heute nicht. Dennoch hat das Album das gewisse Etwas. Da werde ich mir noch Zeit nehmen, weil ich von dieser Band noch nie was gehört habe.

Didn't get much out of this one.
Post-punk emo of the best kind. Another of those bands like Hot Snakes / RFTC / At The Drive-In that seemed to influence every great band of the 00’s. These should have been so much bigger. Saying that, I used to listen to these a lot yet I dont think I ever had this record. Think I stuck to their debut and didnt venture beyond, managing to bypass their biggest record. Maybe thats part of their appeal: they sort of drifted by and created a cult monster in doing so. Who knows. This is class though
This ticked all the boxes for me, I generally like post-hardcore but this has just the right amount of aggression and complexity. From the first track I was hooked. Still amazed the guitarist was in rocket from the crypt, the jump from this to radio friendly ska punk is very unexpected. Definitely prefer Jehu. Wouldn't say I'm a proper fan of any 90s post hardcore bands but this could change with DLJ, loved this album and will be listening again excessively.
Not at all what I expected from the name, thought it would be some trip-hop nonsense. Really fun and dynamic, paving the way for the emo nonsense that I really enjoy a decade or so later. Do You Compute was particularly memorable.
Enjoyed this, but something didn't quite grab me for some reason. Think the songs are a bit long and meandering at times for this style of music. It reminded me of at the drive in. Think I'll be back to listen to this again, when I'm not stuck in Easter traffic on the M6 3.5 but it's getting a 4 as there isn't enough of this on the list

In a nutshell: killswitch disengage Can hear the California punk influence, but that's about it. Where are the "punch in the guts" moments users are referring to? The songs are unnecessarily long and don’t lure me in. I reckon Yank Crime might win over fans of post-punk/post-hardcore, so I'll give it that. Overall: 3/10

Wow! This one is really surprising! I've seen this band referenced before but never checked them out. For 1994 this is incredible! This is probably a 4.5 for me... right up my alley when it comes to aggressive music. I'm kind of embarrassed for not knowing this one. I don't know how I missed this, must have just been the name, and timing, but this is a new favorite! Can't believe this has the same guy that did Scream, Dracula, Scream!

I like punk, I like hardcore, this album had hints of both but didn't accomplish the goal of either. One of the features of hardcore is that the songs are short and powerful, many of these songs these were just too long. Maybe that's what "post hardcore" is but then maybe it's not for me.

Kind of like The Get Up Kids covering Nirvana’s Endless Nameless in At the Drive-In's rehearsal space in different variations for an hour. Or The Blood Brothers with less annoying vocals and too much time on their hands. Lots of cool riffs, some nice vocal melodies, grooves really hard. On first listen I found it too repetitive and hard on the ears; but on the second listen I can really get into this. The only problem with the album is that some songs outstay their welcome by many minutes.

I've been won over. 5 stars.

Iconic post-punk band. These guys definitely majorly influenced a TON of music I adore so I have so much respect for them. They don't suffer from the "Seinfeld is unfunny" syndrome either, this album absolutely rips.
This is an album I’ve always wanted to listen to but somehow never got round to. It’s cited as a massive influence by loads of bands I love, and deserves its reputation as an essential post-hardcore/emo record. It’s extremely my shit and I’ll definitely be revisiting this a tonne. This is what the club is all about! I’m very excited by this one.
I consider myself fairly high in openness when it comes to music, yet I couldn't get into this one let alone through it. It was just painful. Maybe I will try again some other day who knows. But If I want noise music, I'll just listen to MBV! That's some noise music with soul.

I actually enjoyed it a lot, just cut the 30 seconds of scratch sounds and the 3 minute loops of scratch and instrumentals and it’s a 5

I've been on a huge Post-Hardcore binge the past few weeks, but I've purposely been putting listening to this album off because I knew it was on the list and I was waiting for it to come up. Yeah, it's awesome. A musical punch in the cock. Immediately opens with one of the heaviest songs ever recorded and then spits on you for 53 minutes. Kind of silly at times, but that's par for the course in Post-Hardcore. Who cares, it's a lot of fun. Strong 4/5. This list needs more Post-Hardcore - sucks that amazing classics like "Relationship of Command", "The Argument" and "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" are not on this list as well!

Without this post-hardcore doesn’t become what it becomes. At the Drive-In, Thursday and many others owe this album a huge debt. It’s ferocious, catchy and downright unthinkably good. There’s something to the pure and unchained madness of this album and the band that made it. I fully fuck with this!
Fun album. Reminded me of like an earlier Refused or The Bronx. Ahead of it's time. Did get redundant and repetitive though.

This is exactly what I would imagine garage punk to sound like. It thrashes, it’s loud, it doesn’t make much sense. Overall this just felt like what every person was trying to do in the 90s and came up short of being nirvana. Overall I wouldn’t revisit this but it’s better than some albums on this list. 4.1/10

This is one of those seminal albums that, while not on my favorites of hardcore/punk emo music, is still pretty awesome. Blistering is a word that I think a lot use with this kind of music which can be exhausting but definitely makes me miss my moshing days.

It’s a no for me, dawg. I gave each song the old college try, but to be honest I don’t think I listened to any song in its entirety. And then I put on my Summer of Taylor Faves playlist.
From the Wiki, I expected to really dislike this, but didn’t. Nothing I’d ever listen to again, but some of the tracks were reasonable melodic and the guitar work was pretty tasty throughout. Never heard of the group.
Pre-listening: I think I listened to this a year or two ago while compiling an “early emo” playlist. One song (only), Luau, made the playlist. That doesn’t bode well. After listening: yeah, don’t care for this. The first album where no songs will make my ongoing playlist.
Not exactly my jam but my jam-adjacent. Hints of Interpol and some other band I can't put my finger on. Bullet train to Vegas is a bit of a jam.

It says the band toured for the album and then quietly disbanded. I wonder if that's because they heard their music. I'm also seeing a note that this album was credited as starting a music scene in San Diego. I wonder if we will then get albums that kick started music in other towns. That would be a cool separate list. But for this list, I had a lot of skips and irritations whether it was a continuous guitar pick or some distortion sound. My ears were not a fan.
An interesting album, group I've never heard of. Wikipedia calls them "post-hardcore," "post-punk," what am I supposed to make of these terms? No idea, but it's pretty good. Long tracks with a strong display of energy, emotion. Feels punky to me, but the song length is one indicator that things are different. Yeah not sure what to really say about this album, but I liked it. Nothing crazy, but we don't get many albums like this so it's an appreciated departure. Favorite tracks: Do You Compute, Sinews. Album art: Very simple black and white drawing of an ink pot. All the words, the band and album title, seem like free association. What does any of this mean? Who is Jehu? It's a cool cover, bold. 3.5/5
This seems like a legit hidden gem. The guitars are amazing and unique. The lyrics and vocals fit perfectly. The band just kind of disappeared after this album so it didn't gain a huge following. Great find on this list.

Sometimes it’s nice to get an easy and obvious 1 star album. This is often out of time and I’m not convinced these lads could play in time even if they really wanted to, I don’t think they are very talented musicians. This is horrible, nothing to redeem this shit. And an hour long? It’s a slam-dunk one star!
Everything is a matter of perspective. I've listened to this album three times and took my time to rate it because I really liked it (average score 2,71). Next day I listened to Chelsea Girl by Nico (average score 2,61) and hate that garbage. Similar score, different energy and style. Anyway, never heard of Drive Like Jehu before but for me this is the biggest surprise I had pleasure to discover via this site after listen to almost two hundread albums.
Awesome! Never heard of these guys but I like it already. Hell yeah that first track is great! Can't believe I never knew of these guys. This album was great! I loved the angst in it, the long solos, and the feel of the 90s throughout. and John was right definitely has some Janes Addiction type feels to it. 4 Stars!

Whatever the singer is usually inaudible, and quite frankly, indistinguishable from the rest of the noise, but I hardly care, because this rocks so hard that I'm jamming harder than most albums have ever had me jamming before. I could perhaps understand this being annoying, but I'm too busy loving this to care, even if it is a little longwinded. If this is the closest we get to emo on the whole generator then sign me up to finding more noise rock like this. Fuck yeah!

My favourite parts of this album are the parts they sound like othe post-hardcore/emo bands that I enjoy. They make me wish I was listening to slint or dogleg instead 🥲. I get that they were like the fathers of emo or smth. The second half of the album was better than the first.
This post-hardcore album was a lot of fun to listen to. I can hear the roots of emocore, late 90s alternative, and even some pop punk. It interesting to hear how this album differs from its contemporary grunge artists who also got inspiration from hardcore punk. Drive Like Jehu keep a lot of the hardcore elements but add some interesting rhythms and time signatures in what approaches a more math rock approach. This is not my usual listen so it was good to hear something new.

Frenetic, quite progressive, but also very melodic especially tracks like Here Come the Rome Plows, Luau, & Bullet Train to Vegas. Lots of riffs. Not my favorite vocal style but it works for the most part.
Interesting US hardcore...with twiddling bits. Worth another listen.

It would have been an awesome hardcore album but they repeatedly break one of the golden rules of hardcore- their songs are WAY TOO LONG. Added to Library? Yes! This all happened so much earlier than I thought, it seems. A great racket I’d never even heard of.
I find post-hardcore music so strangely beautiful. There really is nothing beautiful about it. It’s so self-loathing and angry at everything. There isn’t beauty to derive from it in the way you can find beauty in jazz or classical music. And yet I find a weird amount of emotional value in it. There is no other genre that insights the same kind of genuine desire to be mad. It’s a wonderful thing, really. I also love how melodic it is. It’s not heavy like other punk and hardcore music. It’s more lively, but still crushing and distorted. And every post-hardcore band plays their instruments like it’s the last time they ever will. But they play like that on every song. Every song has power. There are no sleepers. Yank Crime is all of those things. It is post-hardcore in a nutshell. If you wanted to introduce someone to the genre, this would probably be a good start. The vocalist really reminds me of Cedric from At the Drive-In. It’s that same 2000’s emo kind of screaming. It’s make you want to scream along with him and hurt your vocal cords while doing it. But who cares? Just go all out. You are listening to aggressive music. So just get aggressive and start thrashing around. Rating: 8/10
top-flight hooky math rock
Can see how this led to emo bands. Good stuff. Some of the albums on here aren't that spectacular in their own right but have spun off whole genres of music. That's why they are notable. That being said this is a solid album.

I really respect this album but it's just not for me. There are some really cool and heavy instrumental parts and there's clearly a lot of emotion going on but I think I love my parents too much to fuck with this album. No disrespect just not for me.
I had exactly zero expectations coming into this one, never having heard of the group. The verdict for me is "eh". For what it's worth, 94 is pretty early to have their sound this developed, which is cool; bands like Fucked Up and ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead had similar sounds (on different points in the spectrum) coming into even the mid-2000s. From the first track, I thought this was going to be some generic hardcore punk but there's actually a lot going on here.
It's basically noise with a bit of music
Layering is nearly perfect, losing edge only when vocals slip from the trailing edge. Then, Drive Like Jehu can fall into math rock obscurity just a bit; The rest of the time, complexity's not-quite-masked by punches moving one forward. The added material shows the development of solid song to setpiece.
Mad. Chaotic. All over the place. Deliberately, one assumes. It surprised me that there were a few tracks that I actually half liked...Do you compute; Golden Brown; Human Interest; Hand Over Fist; Bullet train to Vegas. So, what started off sounding like a 1 out of 5, ended up with a (surprising) respectable 3

A precursor to emo I guess, but aspects of this sound more industrial to me. Closer to the Big Black side of the bridge than to Thursday or At the Drive-In. For a first and only self-produced album this sounds really crisp. The sound quality is great. The songs are heavy and emotional (there we go), and induce a sense of panic and aggression. The cover and the aesthetic remind me of Milo Goes to College. It’s DIY done right. I could barely get through the whole thing, yet I know I really do like it a lot.

When I was first getting into Hot Snakes, this album came up as an obvious early chapter that I just could not wrap my head around at the time. Following a half-decade of listening to some more abrasive music, this one finally makes sense. Compared to the relatively tamer, more narrative hard rock of Hot Snakes, this LP (and the DLJ project as a whole) was Froberg and Reis' chance to gnash at the teeth and hone the instrumental sound that would come to distinctly define all their projects – there were more than a few moments on this album that made me turn my head in recognition, whether it be a melody, lick, or even something as small as a guitar slide/choke that felt familiar. That's not to say this earlier effort is lacking compared to what would come after. If anything, this album sees the two Snakes at their purest, rawest, most genuine form. While several of the tracks feel a bit lengthier than justified, not a single one feels inessential to the LP. - this album comes out as well more than the sum of its angry, twisted parts. I understand why sonic assault and more abrasive guitar work may wear on and turn people away, but if you're willing to let John and Rick rage at you for over an hour it all starts to make a twisted, beautiful kind of sense. The raw emotion at play here is immense, and while the statement can be a bit to stomach it's worth the bitter pill it's encapsulated in. Glad the project brought this one back to my attention for another go-around. I still haven't processed Rick Froberg's death from earlier this year, and I think what that means musically has yet to fully hit me. The world lost an excellent musician (one who wasn't so much ahead of as defining the curve in the hard rock scene), and it saddens me to know we'll never get to hear another thesis from the man who could sound so angry yet carry so much emotion in his music.

That was a lot for this early in the morning but it wasn’t the worst album I’ve listened to on here. In the words of Taylor Swift, “damn, it’s 7 am”. I think whoever compiled this list of albums had a bias towards punk rock
This was decent. Not great and it wouldn't be my first choice but I can see it's appeal.
When the first track started, my brain started preparing for an aural assault ala Sonic Youth or Liars, but it was surprisingly okay! I noticed the quality of the playing and composition after a song or two, and then a couple tracks later I noticed that I was kind of getting into it! If nothing else, I think it may end up being good background music that I may come back to again.
Turns out there's a limit to the amount of screaming I can take, and this album exceeded that limit. 1.5.
I can't put my finger on why this is connecting so well with me. It is far more aggressive that what I needed yesterday when I heard it for the first time. But I likely realized the value it may have on a day when I do need that power level to push me those extra few feet. I really appreciated the albums representation of the evolution of punk, to hardcore, to this mixture of the two, with a few shakes of noise rock, and complex time signatures. Like a proto-progressive metal album. I could see Drive Like Jehu opening for Tool. I have almost talked myself into that fifth star.
Drive Like Jehu, playing like they're running for their lives. It all fair pumps along, drums driving us along. Great energy, this must have been something to see live.
I could appreciate the music for sure. I learned today what math rock is and I’m not mad about it. Lyrics weren’t it for me, but that’s okay.
I had never heard of this and it really impressed me a lot. The songs are challenging and full of energy. The guitar playing is really creative and different. Very cool album.
I hope I am presented with a decent and interesting album soon.

This is an ok album for this space. No doubt this would go insanely hard in person. However listening to this I cant help but think they sound like a worse Fugazi and none of their songs really stick their message. I will say their guitar pieces are A- tier for this type of music which was a genuine surprise.

TBH I think I tuned most of it out while I was working but I didnt mind it in the background, except the 20 second high pitched fog horn sound at the beginning of track 5, that was painful.

This record is shrouded in mystery. What is it really trying to say? What is a yank crime? Is it like getting covered head to toe in the jizz of the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff? Who is Nigel Spackman?

This is pretty good stuff. Reminds me of at the drive-ins first couple albums which is a good thing. It feels a bit more straight forward then the aforementioned which kind of lead to me getting a little bored by the end. I'll give this some more listens because I'm sure there are some gems on this album I missed on my first listen.
3.5/5. Primordial emo and math rock, seems like a fairly influential album and an early example of the emerging emo scene.
I feel like there have already been a few albums on the list with the same vibe, so it's a bit boring.
It is a raw album. It's that logical next step when you mix punk and grunge to create the bases for emo. So I can understand it's significance. With that being said - the songs are way too long for the genre and the instrumental parts are often repetitive and don't accomplish much.
So, this may well be a marvelous example of its genre, but personally I don’t ever enjoy being screamed at unintelligibly for an hour. My favorite part was thinking that he was screaming “raw clams!” for the first six minutes.
There were a few tracks, like the first one, for which my first thought was, "Oh yeah, I can totally get into this one!"...but then the track would continue to my displeasure. Mostly it was nothing that I dug, but for those hopeful moments, I will give it a ranking of "tolerable".
I thought it was some kind of a sign last night when I saw the cover of this album --- my husband had just shown me the jar of ink he'd received in the mail. I started listening and I was all like, sorry boys you're just too darn loud, and turned it off after about 10 seconds. But then I stuck it in my earholes and went for a walk this afternoon and for a while it was just the thing. When Do You Compute started, I was staring at a perfect dahlia in full bloom and it felt like maybe the world wasn't just completely awful. This album is loud and screamy and screechy which is actually pretty great sometimes. I was ready to turn it off by the time I got home but then a squirrel ran by along the top of a fence about 6 inches from my face carrying an entire apple in its mouth and, well, I know that doesn't have anything to do with the music exactly but it's a thing that happened and I want to remember it.
I listened to this after watching the 2 hour 50 minutes Taylor Swift Eras movie, which was not particularly compatible with this album. So I am pretty sure this was not optimal timing. I didn’t enjoy this much…

Yank Crime sounds as if someone put an At The Drive In album and an Unwound album in a blender. That is good of course, but got mixed feelings for this album. Always liked it more than Rocket from the Crypt (and am surprised both RftC and DlJ are both in 1001) but it took multiple listens to get into again, and in the end it is just too exhaustive and inconsistent for me to fully appreciate it.
Musically I like this, it's just very intense and at some point the shouting gets on the nerves.
It wasn’t completely my thing, but appreciate their significance for the genre.
It's really good musically, the vocals just kill it for me.

This album is definitely one that grows on you. I’d listened to it a couple times already thanks to a friend’s recommendation. First time it was too much noise rock for my tastes. Second time I started to see past that to how fired up it made me feel. Now I think it’s great!
I still can't believe I went so long without listening to this. The runtime put me off initially, but I find that it helps with the absorbing of the record. This album is one that really demands all of your attention, whether with the screaming, or the chainsaw guitars that sometimes come out of nowhere. The title of "one of the essential emo classics" is well deserved. Favorite track: Here Come the Rome Plows ROME PLOWS! ROME PLOWS!
punk? hardcore? 90's alternative? dabbles of Metal, Noise Rock? Yes and none at the same time. It's very good. I particular like those longer songs with great instrumental sections. Let's talk about the the bass, some great bass lines, you don't get that in punk/hardcore often.
I knew the band name, but never listened to them before. And that’s a damn shame because this is a really good album! Driving guitars, shouty vocals, sometimes pounding sometimes melodic bass. I’ll reach for this again.

Can I really be giving an album I've never heard of before a 5? I think I am. Maybe it's just because I've been in a rut of fairly "meh" albums for the past couple of weeks, but this one sort of blew my socks off. Driving, crunchy, loud guitars that change mid song, vocals just short of a hardcore scream but still very interesting. I really liked it. Maybe my favorite "new to me" album since starting this project.
Wow a second one ahead of its time! Has alot of the trappings of the metal I listen to now (came out in the 2010s), but is from 1994. Overall a great listen, but probably won’t stick b/c it has been so imitated
A poor man's At the Drive In

Including Drive Like Jehu's *Yank Crime* in this list and ignoring Fugazi's *13 Songs*, *In On The Kill Taker*, *Red Medecine* and *The Argument* is a crime all by itself (*Repeater* is a great album, but I would place these other Fugazi LPs before it imho). That (major) gripe aside, I cannot thank Dimery and co. enough for selecting this other seminal post-hardcore gem in their book. I was aware of who John Reis is because of all the nice acts he was a part of after Drive Like Jehu (Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes, Plosivs...), but somehow I had not listened to Drive Like Jehu yet. And boy oh boy, how was I missing out! Browsing through Wikipedia to learn more about this band, I was saddened to learn that the band's singer and guitarist Rick Froberg (also the frontman of Hot Snakes) passed away from "natural causes" two months ago. I had not heard of those tragic news, oddly enough. In a better world, more people would have talked about his sudden death. I'm not gonna beat about the bush any longer: *Yank Crime* is up there with the best representatives of the post-hardcore / emocore genre. And with a track such as "New Maths", you could amost say Drive Like Jehu initiated mathcore / math rock, and this in a very tongue-in-cheek manner (get your inner calculators ready to count the different time signatures there, lol). Apart from " New Maths", *Yank Crime*'s highlights are "Do You Compute", " Luau" and "Golden Brown". The first two are admittedly long compositions, but they're totally worth your time if you're a fan of the genre, thanks to their breathtaking, harmonically tense climaxes. And if you're a post-hardcore newbie, don't get too overwhelmed by the intricate and "difficult" sonic architecture of the album's opener. "Here Come The Rome Plows" is mostly here to set the tone, actually. Everything that comes after may turn out to be extremely rewarding if you want to get acquainted with post-hardcore or similar "punk" subgenres. Normally, I would give a 4/5 - 4.5/5 grade to this record. But given how unfairly low the global score for it is in this app, I'm gonna push that grade to a perfect 5/5 mark. People in here complaining that they "don't like being yelled at" should be a little more humble, I think. They're confusing their own personal limits with an "objective" stance. It's as if I complained about "being yelled at" when I'm being exposed to a bland Adele record: it's not because you're using all the clichés of what a singer is "supposed" to do on a purely technical level that the results can't be extremely grating to your subjective ears. Good art is not necessarily meant to be "beautiful" all the time anyway. And it does not necessarily need to be so in any conventional manner. Good art can also be dark, messy and blunt. Because that's a way for it to reflect our short and messy lives. Quite an amazing album. Precursor to At The Drive-in and many post-punk/ bands in the late 90s to early 2000s.
It isn't a fully blown screaming album but there are certainly elements of it. The album was entirely too long. I did not enjoy it. There is no need to revisit.
