Yep, it's The Cure!
Favorite song: A Forest. So far it's like 3.5*, more with time.
Not a big new wave fan but liked this. Gothic rock and "gloomscape." Minimalist but had some intrigue. Standout is a "A Forest."
Bättre än jag kom ihåg den.
Moody, tense, and sparse, Seventeen Seconds was the beginning of The Cure's "gothic trilogy," which also included Faith and Pornography. While those are also good albums, Seventeen Seconds is probably the most accessible of the three as it retains a bit of The Cure's early prog-rock experimentation which was mostly absent in the other two.
Onirique Pref +++: at night
Good
Amooooo
I love the gothic tunes of it, but it tends to get boring after a couple of minutes. It sounds good but that doesn't mean that it can go on for minutes. Quite lazy and monotonous imo.
Lots of The Cure albums are great!
Spooky, gothic and moody. Sounds a bit newer than it actually is. I had to listen to this one twice as it didn't sound right during the day, but sounded much better once the sun went down. I might come back to some of the songs on this. Favourite: A Forest
favorite cure album so far. the drums are so crispy. and the bass omg. a forest is top.
I wish I could hear it as it sounded on my old walkman, with crappy headphones on a crappy quality overdubbed tape that my older sisters friend gave me. Remastered The Cure loses a star.
mid cure men cure er bra
This was pretty good. Lots of signs of what was to come in music. The 80s sound is in it's transition stage here and the Cure were on the forefront of that maybe behind Joy Division. Personal Enjoyment - 7.5 Songwriting - 7 Lyrics - 8.5 Originality - 8.5 Production Value - 10 Artwork - 10 Overall - 8.1
Some really great songs I’d never heard.
Weird beats, but not repulsive. I suppose it would be better if I was listening on a cheap cassette deck after school in 1980. “A Forest” was a surprise as I think I had heard it before. It’s mere existence added another star. 4/5.
Short and sweet. Solid songs and a distinct sound created on this album.
In my opinion more on the same, but still good
Longer than advertised 🥁
Interesting to hear the Cure at the beginning of their career, really only previously familiar with the 'hits' off this one. Very atmospheric, and A Forest really pops out from the rest of the album in terms of songwriting maturity. My favorite part might be the heavy bass that hits at the end of At Night, will definitely revisit this on late night walks in the neighborhood. 4/5
My first listen to a full Cure album aside from Disintegration. For the most part, it was pretty good. favs: In Your House, A Forest, Seventeen Seconds worst: Three
A Forest. The end. 4 / 5
I believe that this album was my first Cure album (though it could have been Boys Don't Cry), back when it came out in Canada or at least very soon after it came out. When I heard the drum intro to A Play for today as well as Robert Smith's opening line...IIt's not a case of doing what's right" (I thought he was saying Southern case....), I knew immediately that for me this is what rock music should sound like. I playd the hell out of this record and it, along with Echo and The Bunnymen's first and Gang of Four's and Joy Division's were, among others, my gateway drugs to alternative music. I loved this album at that time and I still do. I do recognize that it has a tendency to drag in some places as I listen today, however with songs such as A Forest with it's infectious dance beat, In Your House with that gorgeously subtle ascending guitar figure, The beautiful title track and of course the aforementioned Play for Today, iit is still a fantastic album and a compelling listen. I am tempted to give it 5 but I will do my best to be somewhat objective in my rating, but know that objectivity is futile when it comes to music that me for ever. 4.5 stars
I'm familiar with The Cure but I'm not that familiar with this record! I really enjoyed it! I was surprised at how much it was an instrumental heavy record, I expected more Robert Smith and it took until the last half of the album for him to really show out! Great record, love all the build up and the music is beautiful!
I think I was kind of chilly on The Cure last time they came up, but I really enjoyed this one. Felt like it was keeping the pace up a little more
A lot more ambient and sparse than I'd anticipated. It's a meloncholy and at points creepy listen, really very good melodically. The songwriting didnt particularly stand out but works. You can hear a bit of their later stuff here too. 3.5
4.5
Love the cure. Need to relisten
There are hints of the legendary band they’d become here. More the bricks being laid than the wall itself this is a truly interesting even if somewhat uneven venture from these ‘80s stalwarts.
Great album as a whole, it´s like one very large song; same sound and vibe.
A perfect album for a rainy day.
I hadn’t heard this before. Nice example of where music was at that time.
Lol Tolhurst remains one of the mysteries of modern music. If he were a bassist, I think I would have him figured out (Paul Simonon, Sid Vicious). Or, from a different perspective, a drummer (John Bonham)...oh. Tolhurst was a drummer. Well. He was the drummer on this. The percussionist, I think better to say. Not in a bad bad way. The sense of brood hanging over this album would not have been complemented by anything more than a good time-keeping. Great album. Mood music, if the desired mood is radical apathy. A Forest is, and will always be, a song to cherish
This list is slowly making me a Cure fan. Now where is my black eyeliner????
The first of their 'goth cycle' - ok all Cure albums are a form of goth, but this, Faith and Pornography set an ever-gloomier template for the eighties. This is a sparse album of textures and moods, a world away from the spiky pop of their debut while retaining a knack for a good tune (A Forest) that would ensure that they are always listenable.
- Heard this before - Not my favourite Cure album but still really good - A Forest is a classic - Fav songs: A Forest, Play for Today, Seventeen Seconds
Original sadboy classix
Kool vibe men de kändes mycke längre än 17 sekunder
A band confident in their new direction.
"In Your House" and "M" are great songs, as is "A Forest". I'm not a huge Cure fan, but this was a really good album.
This is more what I expect an album by the cure to sound like. As opposed to disintegration. Enjoyed it! A forest is the highlight. I gave disintegration 3 and I preferred this so has to get a 4.... Although that cold be a bit generous
Am I Spooky Scully?
Classic cure sound, I like it.
A total mood of an album. Minimalist, bleak and darkly elegant. The Cure has better albums than Seventeen Seconds, but what I like about this one is that it has a clear, unified musical point of view and little in the way of window dressing. This is the band stripped down to their most elemental, and it's really lovely. Fave Songs: A Forest, M, In Your House, Seventeen Seconds, Play for Today, Secrets
Interesting early cure, needs further listening, but liked what I heard.
Good album
Early Cure - Gothic Rock. Very good album.
I enjoyed this, although it doesn't seem like everyone would. I like the moody, atmospheric vibes and will try to remember to listen again in October.
I love the sound on The Cure's goth records. Exploration of space, mood, and ambience. Easy to listen to this on repeat a bunch of times.
The sounds are all here but the songs are not quite developed to the heights that The Cure would eventually achieve. "A Forest" is really the only standout track from Seventeen Seconds. The album that came out a year later is the real masterpiece of early Cure.
The Cure is so good, man. This album is dark, gloomy, atmospheric, but not as "evil" as Pornography. It's like the musical equivalent of a horror film. "The Forest" might be their best song of all time, or at the very least in the top 3.
A Forest is a masterpiece of a song and also all the rest of the album is much more than valid, so this is a really captivating and enjoyable project.
Auditory pleasant. It's atmospheric and really sets the gloomy mood. Enjoyable album but probably not for everyone. I liked it.
Kinda chill in a depressing way
Það er svo einstakt mood sem The Cure ná á þessari plötu. Allt við hana fær mig til að langa að grafa mig undir bunka af teppum með heitt kakó og hlusta á vetrarrokið hvína fyrir utan gluggann minn.Æðisleg plata!
This was when I liked them. More New Wave than Gothpop. And before Smith eliminated all opposition.
so dry but so suggestive
It's got some great new-wave post-punk tracks, but I'm less keen on the ambient gothic rock sound, which is a shame considering I like ambient instrumentals. I like quite a few parts of the album, it just never comes together in the way I was hoping it would, which I guess is fair enough considering it's their 2nd album, and first to capture what we all think of as The Cure. 08/11/22
This came out when I was finishing my HSC and they toured on it in 1981, so it is one of those records which lives in a very specific time and place. As with all good and great bands they always work well when the ensemble itself is a happening thing, and here Gallop/Tolhurst and Hartley are all in sync with Mr Eye Shadow's vision. That said I think Lol must have had his kit taken away from him as he spends a lot of time hitting that snare, the toms and crash cymbals are nary to be heard. I think it holds up pretty well, Robert pretty much plays the same riff and yet in thematically hangs together. Simon Gallop shows what an integral part of the band he is, they suffered when he left and prospered when he returned, there is some great bass work in this. Listening to it as one piece works, Play for Today, M and At Night are fantastic and I've dropped A Reflection in to my Quiet playlist, nice chiming of the guitar and piano. This is a surprisingly good record.
Has a rockier feel versus the first The Cure album I pulled on this challenge, which was Pornography. The gothic, moody, new wave feel is complemented well by more guitar. It makes me feel like I'm lost in a dark forest - although not really lost, because the forest has become home and it's lulling me to sleep. Favorite tracks are Play for Today and In Your House.
Nice album
Decent one from The Cure. The songs are very simple melodically and sometimes drag on too long while the melody or rift gets stale. I like the feeling and atmosphere created with the record though. 7/10
Good album, with a genuinely brilliant song in ‘A Forest’. Memories of Oslo too.
Very melancholy but it sounds good!
don't get me wrong, this is a really nice-sounding album, I just feel like it could give me more. nothing felt too groundbreaking or exciting, but a very nice listen 7/10
3.5/5
Good album, some tracks were a bit repetitive though
I wasn't expecting the ambient piano solo start. The bass always plays a blinder on Cure albums. This wouldn't sound out of place as a 2022 new release. A Forest is a great single.
It's hard to go past A Forest when picking a fave for this album but At Night caught my attention too. Love The Cure looking forward to spending more time with this one.
Yes, right up my street. Fetch me the black nail varnish! Fave track - "A Forest" is an absolute tune - feel like I've heard a lot of covers of it, too...
J'aime vraiment beaucoup cet album.
The last The Cure record blew me away. This one is from earlier in their catalog so I was curious to hear how it differed. It felt a little more jammy, a little less produced, a little rawer sounding. This definitely feels like the foundation for the sound they would eventually cultivate on later releases, and for me, it was a great listen. The shorter intro/interlude tracks help pace the album out properly. And "A Forest" is one of my favorite The Cure songs by far!
there's something wrong with the album on technical standpoint besides that it's okay
Drifts by at mid-tempo with a few forays into higher blood pressure (\"Play For Today\"). The mix has some nice hidden layering. \"In Your House\" is an hypnotic ode to boredom and perhaps intrigue.
These guys may not have had the MTV face like a lot of early 80's bands but this album shows that you didn't need Downtown Julie Brown fawning over you to be good. Very enjoyable listen and if I have to have a playlist of 1001 albums, I'm definitely not hitting the skip button when this one comes up.
4.5/5
Instruments were the spotlight.
Por ser The Cure ...
wistful, yet upbeat - the vocals somehow blend into the music as just another instrument. At the same time, there is a coldness and distance to the sounds...
Very nice mixing in places, spacious piano and guitar. Good vibe tracks
Hadn't listened in a while and hadn't realized how deeply embedded in my brain this album is.
M and In your House and At night still slap. Excellent start of their dark decent to Pornography.
0/10 album was actually 38 minutes long Jokes aside, this album actually changed ratings for me over the course of the weekend. What started as around a 3 for me went up to 4 when I found myself listening to it again. What I think I appreciate most about this album is the atmosphere it builds - yes, it can be a bit same-y, but I really dig the sound and can feel myself getting sucked into the world it creates. It's nowhere near as big or as flashy as the band's later work, but it's solidly consistent and gives a taste for things to come. Not a lot of the tracks are standouts, however, I do think this album is the definition of the whole being stronger than the sum of the parts. While I probably wouldn't go back to listen to individual tracks, I can definitely see myself listening to the full album again in the future. I do want to give a shoutout to A Forest though, which is an absolute banger, and feels a bit like foreshadowing to the band's future. Not their best album, but still a solid entry, and I'm happy to have been exposed to it. Favorite songs: A Forest, Play For Today
amazing spooky atmosphere
Not quite as dark as later efforts… I really lack the lower production values though. Brings the songwriting to fore… for there aren’t many better exponents!
Darkwave for days
When I discovered Disintegration for the first time, I took a dive into the Cure's discography. Falling in love with masterpieces such as the aforementioned LP, Pornography, and Faith, I felt this release didn't have the same hit. After listening to this today, I realize my initial assessment was unfair. This album shows so much raw talent and ideas coming into place that would pave the way for the refined beauty that is Pornography and Disintegration. "A Forest" particularly grabbed me and swept me away this time. Solid entry from a superb band.
This album is great! A Forest, M, and At Night are songs I already know and love. But Secrets and Your House are totally new to me and I love these!!! All those discordant notes and minor chords are just excellent. I did not know that there were songs this good by The Cure I had not yet heard. I always thought I was an early adaptor having started in with the Cure with the vinyl of Three Imaginary Boys which dropped in 1979, just barely ahead of this. Somehow I never heard this one!!
Had never heard anything off this album before besides the forest, but really enjoyed it!
I like the Cure. It's not their best. but at this point anything that isn't complete rubbish will get 3 or4 stars because I'm so sick of this list pointlessly including terrible albums. Maybe if there was a brief explanation of WHY an album deserved to be on the list it would help.
4.0 - Unforgivingly minimal, and terribly effective. To me, it sounds like they've recorded everything on 8 tracks - 1) drum machine, 2) bass, 3) rhythm guitar, 4) sound effects, 5) synths, 6) vocals, 7) backing vocals, 8) aux guitar.
Liked it, start was weak but the rest, was good
Ранние мрачные The Cure. Cult Hero.
Early stuff from The Cure, and a distinct rawness to the dark and brooding sound on this album.
"Secrets," "M," "In Your House," and "The Forest" were probably my faves
Dark and brooding early 80s rock. Very atmospheric. I like this quite a bit. 3.5/5
This album got better after each listen. The riffs give me nirvana vibes and I love the tone of the album. I’ll have to do a deep dive in The Cure because I was impressed. Fav tracks: in your house, a forest, m, at night Least fav: the final sound
This was way better than the one or two other Cure albums I've had so far - less depresso more espresso in terms of lyrical content and style. Also generally more aligned with my music taste
Raw, recorded in only a week. Hints of what was to come. A Forest is such a standout, it's simple but so well layered.
Good album
LP
Pure 80s! Loads of chorus laden guitar riffs and wistful vocals.
Part of my youth.
Brilliant!
Vibey af. a lil depressing tho
Love this Cure and love the gothy atmospheric music they created. This album is perfect for a good rainy November.
I love visiting Robert Smith!!
Loved the album. Felt like the vocals were kind of buried in the mix which I found very engaging. Guitar tones were not what I associate with Cure. Very into it.
Sometimes haunting, but also some good pop tracks on their
Big fan of The Cure. This wasn't my favourite, but it was still great. 8/10.
One of my favorite Cure records. Moody music for moody people.
Excellent album containing the archetypal Cure track: "A Forest". Production is sparse but excellent.
Minimalist gloom. Moom.
This is where The Cure really started forming the identity they would come to be known by. I am a recent goth convert so listening to this makes me feel right at home in the gloom. Could've done without "The Final Sound" but other than that this album is a solid skeletal framework for what was to come and I really enjoyed it.
4.25
1001 Albums Generator Day 5 I haven't thought about this one much as I've had a bit of a hectic day, but I've been meaning to listen to it for ages and I loved it. The Cure are another huge 1980s band I haven't listened to in any depth. I really like all the obvious singles, but hadn't listened to any albums before today. The style and sound of this one is exactly my cup of thrills.
monochromatic as fat bob starts to move towards a more Banshees' sound. lots of songs with the same tempo and apparently the drums were treated to sound like a drum machine. faith is better although in the same vein. a forest is my favorite song of theirs.
Music I really enjoy, difficult to explain why as it doesn't massively stand out. Can tell each instrument is carefully considered though. 3.6
Oh wow in huge contrast to the last Cure album we got given (Disintegration) I really love this album! This was about ten years earlier and it's a completely different experience to me. I find this album so relaxing and I get on so well with the vibes of this one. I don't really know what I'm talking about here but I love the style of electronic sounds they have all over this album, it reminds me of Beak> in some places which I'm obsessed with and thinking must be kind of inspired by the Cure now. It's v impressive to me because of the fact that I have no idea how they make these sounds other than the electric guitar sounds. I even prefer Robert Smith's voice on this earlier stuff.
Another great Cure album
Not their best album, but deserves 4/5 just for ‘A Forest’.
Truly great record
Hey, Robert, could you speak up a little?
Love the moodiness and under-statedness of this overall, particularly the guitars. Drum machine feels way dated. Not as dark as I remember it. Whole lotta Joy Division, more so than New Order. Not many cuts blow me away, it's more about the atmospherics. I will listen again.
I'm glad that this list has introduced me to more Cure. I think this is album 2? I'm surprised at how much I love their music. There's a lot more to them than Boys Don't Cry. I'm also surprised at how many instrumentals they did. They did a lot! That being said, I've yet to hear anything *better* than Boys Don't Cry. It also has the problem of sounding a bit samey after a while. Like I couldn't tell you how this is different from Disintegration at all. This feels like a 3 star, and I gave Disintegration 3. BUT... looking back at my last 10-20 albums, this is way better than a lot of the 3s I've been giving out, and is at least as good as a lot of my recent 4s. So she's a 4.
“Beguiling bleakness.”
Easy to listen to. Not musically mind-breaking but has a distinct vibe. Chill. Kind of dark.
Listened Before? N I really liked this one. I'm a bit of a fan of the Cure, so I have a passing familiarity with this album (Mostly A Forest), but this isn't one I had listened to entirely. Pros: It's the Cure! I love these guys' sound. It just FEELS like the 80s, and Robert Smith's lyrics are good, along with his amazing voice. The instrumentation is on point and the guitar hooks are catchy. Cons: I'm glad these guys decided at some point that turning up Smith's vocals would be a good idea. I get that it's supposed to be secondary to the music, but it's a travesty to hide a vocalist like him. This album they're barely audible until the halfway point, but after that much better. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: A Forest
Great use of space in all the tracks. Love the complication in simplicity.
love this album, have it on vinyl. in your house and a forest some of my favs !
What a cracking rekid
I really dug this album. a little slow in parts. The single A Forest is a favorite of mine.
Couples of great tracks but not their best by any means
Got hooked at theintro with the minor key... Loved the whole because of it
Good, haunting and somber but clean
Really surprising. Loved this album and the instrumentals.
A Forest is very very good. I just love the bass tone in this record.
They hit a gloomy sonic vibe and stuck with it, effectively over the entire album. “A Forest” is the best of the bunch.
I liked it
A Forest ragt monolithisch und dunkel lockend raus.
slow start but the back half is like a better Beatles Not much singing, more of an atmospheric album. Very much what you expect with the album cover oops, had it on shuffle, oddly reminiscent of resident evil
I like The Cure. Saw them in concert back in 1985 (Head On The Door tour) and they were great. I had not heard this album before, though, and I can hear the band really developing their own sound. I think Robert Smith is a fantastic guitarist.
secrets and m
Love this, one of their best albums.
Great introduction to the gothic trilogy. Very interesting details that make it a great debut album (not counting the three imaginary boys)
This might be punk
As a "rock" kid in the 80s I really hated this band - totally ignorant and stubborn, admittedly, but Robert Smith's voice was an immediate and huge turn off for me. Having said that, I was excited to get this album today to have a clean revisit to the band and see what I may have missed. ...and I'm not sure what to think. I'm passingly familiar with some of their bigger hits, and this sounds very little like anything I'd heard from them before. The music often sounds little more than a well-produced 4-track demo in parts, and I can't decide whether I'm scoffing at it or really enjoying it ... after multiple listens, I think I'm really enjoying it. I'm far more-easily able to bypass the vocals (either because it's early-Cure or i've "matured" i'm not yet sure) and in parts I don't mind them at all; they are buried quite low in the mix which balances them out against the music. And most-importantly, it *fits* perfectly. What interested me right away was the very dry and up-front guitar that is deceptively clever in chord structure in parts. My favourite song is "At Night" - haunting/powerful/dissonant (although the enduring track "A Forest" really is tremendous as well). Almost like they hit a/the wrong chord on guitar in the main riff and decided "screw it, we're keeping that." Overall the album wasn't what I expected in a good way and I will listen to this again - I think I'm belatedly becoming a fan. I think in the end my criticism (which dissipated after multiple listens) of it sounding like a well-crafted demo that I'd *thought* I'd have liked to hear developed a little more was wrong - of course that minimalism was perhaps the point and is exactly what gives it the haunting sound. So, I'm a goth now. Ok. 8/10 4 stars
I love "A Forest", and the whole album sounds like it could have been built around "A Forest". My 2nd favorite track is probably "Play for Today". This album would be easy to slip into for background music or for a deep listen with headphones on in the dark. This album is probably between 4 and 4.5
Less ‘pop’ Cure and maybe their most goth album, it is haunting, sparse and quite off kilter; best known track A Forest a good example of this disorientation. Play For Today, M & Seventeen Seconds are great standalone tracks but this is definitely a start to finish listen.
Really enjoyed Like a lot It's very good Final Thoughts: 4/5
An absolute joy of an album that demands repeat listens. Brilliant from start to finish
Standout Tracks: Secrets A Forest M Seventeen Seconds At Night Three
A minimal and lethargic album, music is depressing
I really like The Cure. But I have to say I prefer their later, poppier, more polished work. This album was darker and colder and lacked any stand-out hits. But it was still good and an interesting listen.
The Cure - immer gern gesehen. So schön düster und traurig.
Not what I expected right off the bat, but I need to listen to it again sometime
Late 80s Cure > early 80s Cure. But still loved it.
It was pretty good. There weren’t that many songs that stuck out to me. It seemed to be pretty chill overall and kind of spacey.
A Forest was my fave
Liked it a lot despite not knowing any of the songs
Felt pretty “fine.” Not a bad listen but didn’t keep my interest for the whole thing. Forgot I was listening to it around track 6 or 7.
So much of a vibe that the hooks get kind of buried, but there are so many hints of inspiration and legacy hidden throughout and it’s so daring to go over a minute before any vocals are heard
I understand, but I will not repeat the experience
It was fun. Good rock album
Great album, there's something about the old punky rock which is both relaxing and exciting at the same time. I love the ability to turn it up and rock it out
Solid! Listen to again
If I was a teenager at the time, this would have been my jam.
this was not on my radar, despite my admiration for the cure. it was great to hear, and honestly, it was great to have an excuse to listen to something besides disintegration by them, that kinda being my go-to
Post Punk Melódico com Mórbido Tipo minha vida amorosa.
great album. nostalgic and sick guitar :*
i liked
Nearly 5 stars. I really really like it
Classic album love the cure but some songs are a bit weak
Zeker het nummer The Forest :)
Surprisingly modern! Not one to go in our regular rotation, but a solid good pick.
Chillig, klingt nach The Cure, aber chillig
More like a 4.5
A good album all around.
The cure is much better than I thought
Goodish
mysterious dark vibes but still sounds like The Cure(tm) as opposed to Pornography
yeah its pretty good :)
Emo electro-rock.
alright. a little boring for me 3/5
...detuned piano effects. So, another Cure record that gives me the sensation of standing in a very long, slowly moving queue. But now with the addition of mild vertigo.
It was alright
Thin, moody, and withdrawn. Pretty evocative, if not always gripping. Interesting to hear this band’s much more atmospheric earlier albums as I mainly know them from their pop hits.
It was ok but quite slow, not our favorite cure album
Lidt for stenet til mig.
spooky
I'll give it points for being atmospheric and brooding, with a cool guitar sound and overall vibe. That being said, this album is not the main attraction for me, rather the soundtrack to something else. It was fine in the background while I was doing some admin but not going to be a regular feature
Never been that fussed, always thought they were a bit wet. This didn't adjust my opinion
So dark and moody. I loved it. One complaint is that the songs do all have a similar sound, so if you’re not paying attention they can kind of run together.
A lovely collection of tunes, but they sometimes drone on into boredom.
Vibes for the night drives
I'm not too fond of The Cure, but so far they're just "alright".
I know I've never listened to this through before. It strikes me as very atmospheric. I have not been enraptured by The Cure in the past — not long ago, I had a conversation about how I had a hard time distinguishing between three bands of this era that have really strong followings. It's fine, but it doesn't make me want to delve deeper.
Kinda melancholic
My theory on "The author of this book was a scene kid and promotes a disproportionate amount of post-punk/new wave music to validate his youthful energy" still holds
A solid album and one of the less depressing of The Cure’s earlier works. The whole thing has a sort of cool, eerie vibe to it especially with some of the instrumental tracks which makes the album pretty cohesive overall.
This album has a lot darker sound than the other Cure albums.
I am about to see The Cure play at a festival next weekend, so that is a nice coincidence. I was largely indifferent toward them until recently. I became a bit of a fan, but nothing too crazy. Which I feel you can say about this album as well, nothing too crazy. I feel this is a rare occasion in which an album is a bit too short for my liking. There are definitely some highlights, but just not enough to warrant a higher rating. 3/5
This is The Cure pretty much still finding themselves. All the building blocks that would lead to the seminal Disintegration are alreas here, they juat need some more refinement. This is definitely not among my fave The Cure albums, but it‘s still an enjoyable listen. Funnily enough the generator assigned me this album the day Robert Smith released a song with Olivia Rodrigo.
Meh. It was fine.
Great Songs: Play for Today Good Songs: A Reflection, Secrets, A Forest, M, At Night Mid Songs: In Your House, Three, The Final Sound, Seventeen Seconds Bad Songs:
sad and somber but alright
Like the cure, not this album so much
i can't say this sort of hyper-atmospheric airy tone is very much my thing, but i didn't dislike having this album play in the background of my thoughts. while i do think the songs sounded a little monotonous, i get that was sort of the intention with this record so i honestly can't complain.
So desperately moody. I kinda like it
Really good at setting a vibe and sticking to it. I definitely didn’t hate the music. But I don’t really feel like they wrote any songs on this whole record. It sounds like just vibes and no cohesive songwriting. I don’t really feel like I can give more than a 3, as most of it felt half written.
Gloomy, miserable, the end of post-punk Cure. This much Paul and I agreed upon, however, he scored 2 stars, me 4. So we compromised on 3.
bien, no mucho para mí pero bien
A Forest is a banger, rest meh
Very sparse. A specific, gloomy mood. I appreciate it and acknowledge it's influence and quality. I can't love it.
Other Cure albums stuck with me more, but still enjoyed this. 3.3/5.
These guys sure know how to beat you over the head with a chord progression. At least they had the decency to write most of these songs in a minor key.
temones increíble álbum chill
This early album shows a lot of development on the gothic sound they pioneered. Dark, eerie, and subtly mysterious, the tracks are understated and evocative. It has a low-budget production that showcases bleak minimalism. I don't latch on to it as much as their later pop-oriented hits or higher production albums, but it's a good listen.
More familiar with Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me era. Quiet little album, very subdued. I prefer later albums
Certainly not as riveting as some of their other work. It’s very minimalist, great mood-building and atmosphere but it takes too long for anything to land.
Enjoyed my time with this album, even if it wasn't my favorite. I understand the appeal.
A moody, minimalist early album from the kings of mope. It contains one great song, "A Forest," a couple others that are pretty decent such as "Play for Today, " but many songs sound incomplete or like fragments of songs. The faraway vocal effect on some songs is eerie and dreamlike but I can't help but feel it's more like an album of demos. The mood is ominous but most of the songs feel half baked.
False, it is actually much longer than that
never heard of this one, secret cure??? overall good gothy vibes, kind of quintessentially the cure? it's good 💥a forest
Much more dark and experimental than I was expecting. It’s good but from a first listen I prefer their later stuff.
Good music, but stuff I appreciate more than actually enjoy
Not my favorite cure album, but I like it still.
Darker than their later stuff
Pretty solid but didnt wow me.
Classic cure sound, something you can play in the background.
Fine enough music but almost too ethereal, slides right off of me, nothing to grab onto
The minimalist spooky approach can be very intriguing, but then it became flatter the second/third time around. I was very down with the big scary ahhh version of The Cure on Pornography. I guess this is the crippling anxiety quiet kid version of The Cure. More tame on the fearful sound, perhaps in an unsettling way itself. But there's more space that while I can admire from a certain point of view, is ultimately empty. I think only one track stands out for sure, the penultimate "At Night". The rest is either hit or miss. I'm a big fan of that dark gothic Unknown Pleasures/Juju sound. But those records make larger splashes while this settles in its subdued waters. Certainly a step that should be lauded in the band's career, but not a strong buzz for the long term. It also lasts longer than seventeen seconds (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)
*1980. *A little more subtle, minimalist, and bleak than other Cure albums. Feels pretty goth. *Only 38 mins. *The Cure is always solid - there are no standouts here though. RATING - 7/10
I’ve never really gotten in to the Cure, not sure what it is but something just doesn’t engage me like it should. Sure, “Friday I’m In Love” is a good track but I never really saw the greatness. This album at least peaked my interest more than the others. It had less big sound scapes and more raw guitar emotion. That sat right with me. Forest was my favourite song and the other were ok too. I might be a bigger The Cure fan if they took a different direction in later albums.
2.8
Enjoyable but nothing super memorable for me. I enjoyed the mood and atmosphere. 3.5/5.
Man, my shoes are pretty dirty. I was able to get a good look at them and ponder the sadness in my soul for what sure felt longer than seventeen seconds. Oh well, on with the black eyeliner. Pretty good album overall, though definitely not as dynamic as some of their other work.
It’s good! Still not too well-versed in early Cure (Cure-ly) so the more raw sound might take some getting used to, but there’s just a good amount of this band i like more.
A Reflection - 3/5 Play For Today - 4/5 Secrets - 3.5/5 In Your House - 4/5 Three - 3.5/5 The Final Sound - 3.5/5 A Forest - 4.5/5 M - 3.5/5 At Night - 3.5/5 Seventeen Seconds - 3/5
Just not the right day
Enjoyable albeit a little underwhelming. RYM: N Saved a song: N
Interesting.
i dont like how quiet roberts voice is in some of the songs, i can barely hear him. the album builds a cold vibe tho, its not bad. the title track is probably my favorite. A forest seems to be a fan favorite but i dont get why.
Arrancó y dije chau hoy me pego un tiro. Después no está tan mal e incluso algún tema me gustó. Dicho esto no queda guardado.
Pretty decent sounds - I did like the haunting nature of some of the music - but not really my favorite genre. Really liked "A Forest" which also turned out to be their top single on the album. Overall pretty solid . 3
Stark 3a
Otroligt svag för the Cure. ”A forest” och ”at night” höjdpunkter.
This album, for me, truly marks the beginning of the 1980s sound as we know it; the new wave elements are fresh and timeless, Smith's vocals are emotive and keening. The music is bruised and brooding, steeped in angsty guitar twangs and gothic-esque textures, sitting on harmonies that mediate between pleasant and intentionally discordant. While very much a harbinger of The Cure that was sure to come, this album still tends to feel like a run-up, as some ideas and sounds are still left needing development.
I feel like this would be best on a long train ride through a sketchy city at night before a huge event. This whole album feels likes it's building up to something. It's calm, it's focused, it's spooky. It doesn't build up to anything, the title track feels like an unresolved ending
The jangly guitars, the emotion and the styling is all here - the part missing is arguably the melodies.
I'm no great lover of The Cure, but I'm not a hater either! I think they're fine and write perfectly good songs, but the production just leans a little too into the 80's sound that I would never choose to stick on. Still, good time!
When the band was most popular, it had a reputation for an unusual and eclectic sound and in my opinion this album personifies that reputation. I would not classify these songs as rock and roll, and they were definitely unique. While listening to "A Reflection" and "The Final Sound" I had to check that they were part of the album as I wasn't sure if they were part of the album or part of something else. I'm really on the fence regarding this album. I don't hate it, but I'm not sure I really like it either. Best song, "M".
Early indie, very raw and unproduced. A Forest is a stand out on this album. Much of the other songs have similar format, moody guitar and lyrics with simple drumming. Good listen nonetheless.
Pretty good. Not quiiiite my type of music methinks. Feels like being lost in a fog.
Not as moody as other albums by them. It felt like they discovered what a guitar was. Nothing really hooked me. I didn't need to hear this. But I didn't hate it out of the gate.
At some point I thought the record was stuck... but it was still pretty chill
Decent. No more, no less. It accompanied me through my morning routine without making a fuss.
meh
I have strong (and possibly unpopular) opinions of The Cure, but Seventeen Seconds is a decent album. Relatively compact and showcasing some of the band's strengths in theming and songwriting.
If this had been the first Cure album I heard instead of Kiss Me, I’d have written them off instead of becoming a fan. Low energy and no bite.
Very minimal compared to their later work, especially disintegration. As a sophomore effort, they developed tremendously from this.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
No bad
7/10
Not the best from the Cure, especially since I listened to “Disintegration” yesterday, but enjoyable. Don’t love the short tracks, but at least they do their thing and finish quickly.
There are so many songs on this I’ve heard from working at my last job and having a supervisor who loved goth music lol Not as good as some of the later records they put out but I enjoyed it. 3/5
Decent, but didn't hit as hard as Kiss me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me or Disintegration
Great production - it just isn’t my kind of music.
I.. did not particularly like this. I like goth music, but The Cure is a band that I just can’t seem to get into very much. This was my first time listening to a full album from them, and.. it was extremely boring to me. Maybe this wasn’t the right album to have as a first full-length Cure listen, or maybe I just had to be there in order to “get” it. Who knows, maybe I’ll revisit it another time and like it more. But I would be a liar if I said I enjoyed this listening experience. If an album has me checking to see how much longer a song has until it ends.. not a good sign. It just felt very monotonous to me. Now, I love Robert Smith as a person and I deeply respect The Cure for how incredibly influential they were, and continue to be, in the goth scene. I can definitely see why someone might really like this album, but it failed to do much of anything for me. I’d have to give this one a 3/5. It wasn’t BAD necessarily, but.. just unremarkable. Album highlights: In Your House, A Forest, At Night

Nice and moody, a sort of hint at their later sound as compared to eg. “Boys Don’t Cry” from their first album
I really enjoyed the sound of this album which—like all other (one) cure albums I’ve listened to—had a pretty consistent sound throughout all of the tracks It wasn’t as good as disintegration but it was really strong still and I don’t think there were any songs I disliked, the intro could maybe be a skip however 3.5
First time listening a The Cure album and must admit kinda surprised. A lot of vibes and atmospheric sounds, ehich I can tell influenced lots of bands I listen to, although, it can be boring, even being a relatively short album. Forest is by far my favourite track, and yeah, might give it another listen. 3/5
Its was just okay, not bad, but not good either
I was previously familiar with The Cure, but not this album. This is a bit different from The Cure sound I know, but I do see the elements of that sound here in this earlier album. This has some pop/new wave elements which are typical of the time period, but I can see where their direction would be going too. I wouldn't mind hearing this again, but probably would seek out other Cure albums over this one.
A favorite from The Cure for sure.
6/10
Very chill. Added sum to my playlist. Very good album to listen late night :)
Enjoyed it, but not more than three stars' worth. ★★★
Had a difficult time listening to this one, most of the songs have no lyrics which i get isnt a criteria on its own but, even when there was lyrics, i felt it was just to fill in the gap of having just music, which sometimes sucked because the music itself was really telling of the emotion it was trying to procure.
Not the best The Cure album, but still good
Good, but imho not the best of the Cure
