Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Bit long. 20 mins too long Disillusion is very enjoyable. Everything is decent, but that song stands out. Some of the album sounds like a British elliot smith, some doesn't.
I really liked this. Will listen to again
Good stuff. How did I not discover this in the 90's? I was the right age and listening to music. Dang it.
Elliott smith 2.0 una piacevole scoperta e nonostante tutto riesce ad avere un suo sound
For some reason, probably because of the name, I always thought Badly Drawn Boy was some sort of forgettable indie twee or emo from the 2000’s. Turns out it’s an arresting piece of art from a singer/songwriter, with gorgeous and idiosyncratic instrumentation and interesting lyrics. It will reward future close listens
I feel like i have to listen to a lot of these albums multiple times before i pass judgement lol. This album was popular with a friend of mine way back in 2003 and i never got into it. Listening to this the second time in 2 days i still cant but i really enjoy it when i focus on it!
Charming, pleasant indie rock.
Pretty good!
I am in LOVE wow, so beautiful and I had no clue this existed Luv the vocals Favs: The shining Everybody’s stalking Camping next to water Stone on the water Once around the block - standout fav ! Bewilder beast Cause a rockslide
I liked the album as a whole, but I particularly liked the intro song. I wish that vibe had carried out through the rest of the album.
You open an album with a French horn interlude and you've sold me
This album it feels like home. It doesn’t feel like individual songs as much as a piece of music that is supposed to be heard all together. I really like the range of instruments and sounds used throughout. Like an indie symphony. “I’m not broke so please don’t mend me” “There’s no use feeling all the things I’m feeling. There’s no one here to feel with me.” “Please don’t leave me wanting more I hope you never die There’s no need to say more Just promise that you’ll try” Favourite song: Epitaph
Thoughts before listening: I once told some British girls that I met at backpacker hostel in Peru that I was into Badly Drawn Boy to try and impress them. They didn't care. For some reason I thought this was like the epitome of cool British 90s music. I thought I had already listened to this album, but I was apparently thinking of Super Furry Animals. Review: Well I don't recognize any of these songs so I guess I was full of it with those British girls (maybe I told them I was into Super Furry Animals instead...who can really remember?). There are some really nice moments on this album albeit with 18 tracks there is some unnecessary filler as well. The sound on this is mostly folky pop rock with some orchestral flourishes added from time to time. "Everybody's Stalking", "Camping Next to Water", "Once Around the Block", "Disillusion", and "Stone on the Water" are my favorite songs. 4-stars
After one listen I wasn't sure what I just heard. Definitely had to give this one a deeper listen. It's pretty good. Grew on me after a few listens. My favorites: Everybody's Stalking, Another Pearl, Bewilderbeast (cool instrumental!), Say it Again (Horns! YES!). There's a few short songs on here that are more like filler (Bewilder & Body Rap) They seemed extraneous. Blistered Heart is a short little instrumental but it's pretty good. Not every instrumental needs to be a 5 - 7 minute long jam session. Cause A Rockslide pisses me off. They start off that song SO GOOD! It rocks in such a grooving way with these cool delicate guitar lines set against a steady distant thundering beat.... Then halfway through the song it's like somebody's fucking with the radio dial and it falls apart into some kind of synth in space hypno thing and then let's just throw in some backward vocals (of course) and tack on a totally unrelated acoustic thing at the end. WTF?! They ruined an otherwise good song, lol. Epitah was a tender little song but the overuse of chirping birds was kind of annoying and not that creative. I'm imagining him singing it in an aviary.
I forgot how good this is. Magic in the air, the shinning.
Actually kinda noice cool music videos
Badly Drawn Boy your album was perfectly crafted bravo!
This was cool and ud like to return to it. Kinda scatterbrained today so I don't think it got a fair shot.
Good to rediscover. I knew I was a little bit cool as a 13 y/o.
This one wanders all over the place. Some Death Cab vibes here and there, but much more varied than them.
i can see why some may find this boring. but i’m too nick drake-pilled to find this boring. this is awesome to me
Catchy pop rhythms from a tender, sensitive place. I know this got overplayed quite heavily on the radio, so a fair few people dislike it, but I do enjoy this. Is it a bit too nice in that Coldplay kind of way? Perhaps. Did I hum along? I did. Three and a half stars.
The album and band were completely unknown to me. When I heard the first track, I thought it might be quite interesting. In between, however, I found the music a bit boring. But then it was very pleasant. In the end, I enjoyed listening to the album, but I probably won't listen to it again any time soon. But who knows? 4/5
I loved this album. If even a handful of tracks were as amazing as The Shining, I would give it a five. Unfortunately the other tracks were all good/great, but not amazing. So while I am giving it a four, I was a feeling little let down after finishing.
Really solid brit pop/rock. Sprawling, experimental at times. I'm always surprised by the number of instrumental interludes.
This album was pure magic when a friend lent it to me freshman year of high school. Back then, finding music that wasn’t on local radio stations was kind of like getting your ice cubes from the South Pole, and it was no small thing to know about a great record that no one else did. I was curious if the same magic would be there when I listened to it as a much less open-minded middle aged man with a mortgage and lower back pain. I gotta say, this gave me the same tingles that it did back then. I think it’s incredibly successful for something trying to be really original. Not sure if I’d be able to get into it if I heard it for the first time today, but the only surprise on this listen was how many great songs are crammed into one album.
My dad and I have a bit where we’ve been calling a Channel 4 weatherman Badly Drawn Boy (for a reason totally lost to either of us) for the last 15 years. So naturally I’m already fond of this. Favourite Track: Another Pearl, Once Around the Block Least Fav Track: This Song
I actually quite enjoyed it. Once around the block is a really nice song. Fuck it, 4
interestong album
Badly Drawn Boy has a really great knack for crafting sweet-sounding pop melodies, but I can’t help but feel something is lacking. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I don’t know if there is a certain inherent inauthenticity or something along those lines that just isn’t ringing true. While the musicality is expressing true feeling, the vocal delivery is telling a different story. Several of the songs verge into twee territory because of how sugary sweet they are. Also, the way he jumps between genres, while interesting, adds to the overall lack of conviction I’m sensing. There’s also unnecessary reverb on his vocals on most of the songs that even furthers the feeling of distance. Some of it is very Sufjan Stevens-esque. I’m quite torn on a rating here. 3.5/5
To start an debut album in 2000 with a cello and a horn was a bold move.
I enjoyed it more than I should have. But it worked for me on a lazy winter day when the sun didn’t come up. 3.5
i tend to underrate early-2000s indie folk stuff but something about this works for me. absolutely devastating album art though
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I had heard of the group, but thought it was an EMO or pop/punk band. I really, really liked these songs. Great voice, instruments, lyrics…..overall a super enjoyable album. I will listen again and dive into his catalogue.
4.4
I love Badly Drawn Boy-discovered him 20 sthg yrs ago when he did the soundtrack for About a Boy (2000) and it was the film opener for the 1st edition for the Tribeca Film Festival (I worked on that for a couple of yrs, so fun). I love Damon Gough's voice and his instrumental skills - he plays like 9 instruments and song arrangements, just lovely. I have a few of his records, this one is fab, I love it
I like this
Another hard one to scores - sound really nice and many songs are cleverly done. I love the acoustic instrumentation (an album with cello automatically gets bumped one point from me). So then why is this hard to score? For some reason I don't really connect, it does me nothing, and it'd be background music only. However I have the Kinks a generous 3 yesterday, and feel this should definitely be more. A 4 then.
This album sounded like if Elliott Smith, Alex G, Neutral Milk Hotel, Fleet Foxes, Beck, and Oasis wanted to make a soundtrack for a Wes Anderson movie together.
For what it is, it's really good. It's kind of folksy, kind of rocky, with a bit of navel-gazing mixed in. It has some interesting sounds and the vocals just fit perfectly with the music and style. It's really difficult to score, because I don't know if it's a home run 4 stars, but it's far better than a "meh, it's fine" 3 stars. I'm giving it 4 because I really liked it, acknowledging that at the end of this project this one may look a bit of an outsider.
I really enjoyed this album. Good Melodie’s. I would have really loved this in the 90’s.
Real pleasant and interesting
Impressive album a first listen for me.
Love About a Boy but never heard this one. I think I could really get into this after a few listens.
Too long to be listened to twice in a normal day, yet fun and interesting folk pop. Will listen again sometime.
A wonderful surprise. Right in my wheelhouse and somehow was completely blind. That Indie-Folk I crave and so much of it.
Not bad, quaint. Maybe - 3.724/5?
Honestly pretty good. I was not sure what to expect but this turned out nice.
Enjoyed
Really like the sound of this. Like a British Elliott Smith. Quite long but I like the lo-fi collage of different styles.
This album was a surprise for me. I liked songs, generally, and I liked how the album was conceptualized, track by track.
Have not heard this one before. Good stuff.
7/10. Some really good parts. Some meh parts. But the really good outweighed the meh for me. 4-5 songs made the playlist.
I honestly wasn’t quite sure what to make of this at the start. But about halfway through I started to view this a precursor to the indie rock and pop rock sound we’d hear later in the decade from bands like Phoenix or Edward Sharpe. At least that’s what I heard. There’s some really charming stuff here. Some wonderful arrangements involving instruments I didn’t expect to hear. Sometimes the vibe felt akin to walking in the woods on a warm spring day. My one issue with it is that it was just too damn long. It didn’t need to be an hour. There were at least a few tracks that could’ve been cut here to make this a 40-45 minute album. It gets four stars from me, but it’s really more a 3.5. Standout Tracks: The Shining, Stone on the Water, Body Rap, Once Around the Block, Bewilderbeast, Magic in the Air, Disillusion
Interesting, could use another listen
This album is a wild ride and deeply rewarding. This is the first gem I’ve got from the project and I can see myself putting it on many times in the future. I just absolutely love that most of the songs have a completely change in tone by the end of them something that I can only remind me of parklife which is one of my all time favourites.
Very good indy rock
I was unfamiliar with this artist. This was a very interesting album encompassing baroque folk, indie rock and grandeur pop. Will revisit.
Though "The 40 Minutes of Bewilderbeast" would have been more effective, I appreciate the boundless ambition inherent to an artist pouring everything they have into their debut, especially when it covers so much sonic ground.
Fucking brilliant, had no idea what the music would be like but great melancholy bait. Great length, exactly my sort of music - nice distance from Elliot Smith but similar vibe. 4.55.
Very pretty.
Nearly 5 territory. Poppa LIKEY
Nice discovery. Always assumed this band was dogshit.
Love the use of all the extra instruments on this one. Like a small orchestra accompanying a melancholy folky indie kinda guy
It's okay. I rather liked it. I wish there were half stars to give, it would be 3.5.
It’s actually a great great album. I remember when this record came out - with ‘Once Around the Block’ cute music video of the titular character ferrying out taxi fares round a city on his back. At first thought not much of it but a pretty twee song until I can around to listening to this record. Back then enjoyed it thoroughly and spun it many times but for some reason I forgot about it - and now two decades later I’m listening to it and remembering it very much - it’s a sticky album. Happy to have had the opportunity to revisit it.
I think that the best thing about this project is that I’ve really become a fan of Neil Young in the process. Enjoyed this album a lot.
Brilliant
Good music. I love this album!
Starting off pretty solid. Indie melancholy in the vein of Sufjan Stevens. This started out as a solid 4, but kinda dragged on. Still appreciated some of the weirdness to it, and feel like it was super eclectic while still having that indie feel. Low 4.
Haven’t listened to this in a loooooong time and don’t know why. I really like this record. I like the way it flows through the tracks: it sounds like it’s meant to be listened to top to bottom. I like how the songs vary around a central sound.
it was cute
Never heard of the Badly Drawn Boy before. This was some good shit! Going to look for more from them.
Hyvä levy! Grunge rockia, mutta sit myös rentoja akustisia kappaleita ja kantria. Sitten on myös kokeellisempia kappaleita ja instrumentaaleja. Ei haittaa vaikka oli vähän pidempi levy. Parhaat: The Shining, Camping Next To Water, Pissing In The Wind, Disillusion, Epitaph
Badly Drawn Boy was a name floating around in the ether in the 00s but I never heard them to my knowledge. I always thought it was some popular emo band that stood next to Fall Out Boy at parties and looked a little more mopey and not quite well-rendered. All to say that this was a pleasant surprise of a record though about 15-20 minutes too long for my introduction to them. I can hear a little bit of Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, and The Shins in the music which to me means that he caught some piece of the zeitgeist that they were all also tangled up in. It also reveals the US Pacific Northwest bias in my listening habits. I'm not likely to throw this record on again as a whole but I'd welcome hearing more when it shows up in the stream.
This one surprised me. I liked it a little bit.
Very enjoyable. Listened twice in first listening.
An album and artist I had never heard of but after hearing it, I feel like this the kind of record I had hoped to discover on this list. Accessible enough, but wholly new as well. Instrumentation that holds up regardless of lyrics. Hhe has a sound of his own that no one else quite sounds like, and it is a sound that is pleasantly quirky with his instrumentation and arrangement choices. I also love that this album doesn't shy away from studio fun that goes missing on most indie rock/folk rock albums. Dig the album cover. Conveys tons of symbolism and is beautiful to look at. I found this way more interesting and tolerable than an Elliot Smith record, and I say that as someone who has lived near Portland, Oregon my whole life. Heard more than my fair share of Elliot Smith over the years. Pleasantly surprised as most of Brit Pop and Chamber Pop of this era usually bores the shit out of me, but this was truly a fun album that reflects and elevates Damon Gough's influences. If I have any complaints it is that at 63 minutes, it does run a tad too long. I prefer to leave an audience hungry for more, rather than risk overstaying their welcome.
Baroque bliss, a perfect combination of quality instrumentation and unassuming vocals.
Quite liked this. Wouldn't listen again deliberately but ... liked it!
I'm not surprised I haven't heard of this album because this isn't really the type of thing that goes mainstream. I however was sorry I hadn't heard of it sooner because I really liked it a lot. Listening to it felt like drifting down the river. Some parts slow, some parts rushing, some winding, and some through a spooky little forest.
Pretty interesting, relisten soon
I had not hear of Badly Drawn Boy before this despite being a fan of many comparable artists. This album sounds great, I gave it two listens and enjoyed the second quite a bit more than the first - a sign that it’s probably a grower. It reminds me a lot of Beck’s Sea Change and of some moments in Sufjan Stevens’s Illinois - two of the finest “indie rock” albums ever made. Given the year it was released I would not be surprised if he inspired them on those albums. At worst it’s a very solid indie rock album beginning to end, and it has potential to be a masterpiece of I give it more time. It’s one I plan to revisit.
Me gustó mucho, quizá sin enloquecerme, pero si dándome ganas de saber más de esta banda. Por eso un puntaje que me permita recordarles.
I really liked this album. One of my favorite soundtracks is the "About a Boy" soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy, but I wasn't a fan of his other work when it was released. However, 25 years later, I can appreciate this debut album MUCH differently. It still is a bit boring at times, and it doesn't put me into a state of "excitement" that would make me give it 5 stars, but it's definitely 4.
Much better than what I expected. Few bands/artists can pull off that kind of indie rock where all the songs feels more like vignettes that are all over the place, like Wowee Zowee for example. But this guy does it really well. Kind of makes me think of Grandaddy mixed with Beta Band or something like that.
I can't explain why, but I really loved that one. A melancholic, lofi and honest feel all the way through. It's really a 3.5 to me, but considering the shit I've went through within this list, let's give it a 4. I'm feeling happy today.
Good
Ah! I’d forgotten about BDB, hadn’t listened to him in years. First heard him from the ABOUT A BOY soundtrack, and then went down a rabbit hole of his music in the early 2000s. Thanks for the reminder on how fun and quirky and insightful his writing is.
This is a beautiful album. It flows so well from beginning to end, there are multiple high points but no real weak tracks. You easily lose track of time. I will definitely listen again.. and again.. and again!
Pretty good Indy album. Starts slow and builds toward disillusion.
ok 3 songs in, kind of reminds me of radiohead. minus the beautiful falsetto...oop. definitely gives indie. kinda interesting this song fall in a river ends with the actual river sounds. i like camping next to the water. the lyrics are kind of abstract, fantasy-like idk. "i am a giant grain of sand" find deep meaning in that for me pls. i like that song tho (another pearl). oh also drums in most of these are very light/soft. once around the block is actually their top streamed song; makes sense i heard the intro and it immediately kinda stuck. magic in the air good too. bomb explodes halfway through "cause a rockslide"?? uhh so just found out this isn't a band it's just one dude?? that makes it a lot more impressive holy. oh also i figured out who i think he sounds like. the dude who sings for the smiths (idk who that is tho). the last song epitaph is good too, like the whistling and birds chirping. the whole album actually really matches with the environment im listening to it in. which is like a slow sunday afternoon, clear skies and trees rustling yk. maybe minus the impending sense of doom i have about aps. anyway i liked this, might listen again.

This was real good.
I thought this was really good.
A hat trick of albums all removed from the book. 3 in a row! That's not happened before. This one I think is hardest to justify it's removal, in that it's a one off, has aged really well and had quite the cultural impact. It's also really good. Also, and relevant to this record, he started up the excellent Twisted Nerve record label with his mate Andy Votel (Finders Keepers, Violators of the English Language, Mr Jane Weaver). Badly Drawn Boy was basically inescapable around this time (to the extent his work was even included on high profile chill out compilations of otherwise ostensibly trance music), with this and then the About A Boy soundtrack only compounding matters. Partly due to it's ubiquity I didn't really engage much with this as an album, which I now see as a mistake, it's far superior to anything by Doves and the like which floated about in its wake.
8.5/10 This took me back - saw BDB in the new bands tent at Glastonbury just before this came out. As a 90s indie kid I was familiar with a chunk of this Is it excellent, genre hopping evidence of a great songwriter, or a really good album frustrated by having too many fragments and incomplete songs? Maybe both This is genuinely excellent, but a fragmented early portion and a couple of instrumentals (Bewliderbeast!) screaming out for vocals Yes there is some influence of his northern contemporaries, but the album looks backward in a good way to the 60s and 70s in particular. Indie, folk, alt, country, funk are all here. I can hear things like Nick Drake & Simon and Garfunkel Great harmonies, lovely tunes A great example of what could have been a massive album, but wasn’t for some reason. Other people doing stuff in the same area, but not as well, managed to make it big whilst BDB didn’t Best: Pissing in the Wind
Ruhiges, aber interessantes Indie-Album.
Got a lot of love this album, it's not a masterpiece but it is very very good. 7/10
A friend from England recommended this album to me a few months ago and I did like it, it seems nearly as deep as Radiohead, and sadly not as well known across the Atlantic. Its definitly better than Coldplay lyrically and musically too. Not sure if they hold this up on later albums but this one is very good.
Enjoyed that. Didn't need to be so long, could have been a great 10-12 album or so. But still, cut the weak and there's a fantastic album in here. First time hearing him and impressed
4. Great album
HL: "The Shining", “Everybody’s Stalking”, “Once Around the Block”, “Bewilderbeast”, “Say it Again”, “Cause a Rockslide” I feel like I can’t justify why I’d rank this on the level of the previous albums (Elvis, Johnny Cash). It often sounds half-finished, with songs arbitrarily interrupting each other. But darn if I haven’t been looking for a folksy album with this exact vibe- a wintery album that is also warm and uplifting. The horns in the opener and the birdsong in the closer solidify that feeling, even if the strange diversions in “Fall in a River” and “Rockslide” threaten to shatter that coziness. Every year further in the 21st century, this album’s (one-time) inclusion in the 1001 only gets stranger. 4 stars
I've not cared much for Boy in the past but for some reason this album hit me just right
not his best but good
Strings, horn, melody opening. Acoustic nostalgic tinged with sadness trying to be happy. Very well crafted songs. Love the vocals and their prominence. Gets more experimental with various songs. "This song" hurts to listen to in headphones. A good stretching of the sounds available for building music. Has a bit of a Beatlesque feel. Thematically the more experimental sounds work with the "bewilder" part of the album title -- a certain confusion in defining who and what we are even as we look back at ourselves. Good album. Well worth listening to. But doesn't quite hold together as a whole for me.
Good album, with some strong tracks, maybe a bit too long. If some of them should have been cut from the album it could be a 5
kindof like if Elliot Smith and The Shins had a baby. but a good baby
Another great listen. Hard to categorize, like a modern Harry Nilsson.
There are a few of those bands that make albums where 3 or 4 songs reach amazing heights and the rest feels ok, but not great. But when you take 4 or 5 of their albums together you can cherry pick and combine the ultimate classic. A band like Elbow has that. And so has Badly Drawn Boy. Some of these songs are amongst the best I've heard, but as an album, it doesn't reach that height.
Almost and very close to 4
Great album by Tightly Wound Boy. Great to hear it again.
Not something I'd have thought of myself, but it's good. Favorite song: everybody's stalking
Best deadtired Hangover trainride Soundtrack possible. I found songs I forgot about and more that are so special!
Indie, SingerSongwriter, mid, male, great voice, multi instruments, harmonic, sarcastic, sounds more american/metropolitan than british, many different styles, experiments with instruments and effects. Feels like he is fed up with the world and is confident it would not change, but enjoys life as best as possible. Listened to it while studies, was on my mobile for a long time. Great album, reminds me on pink moon sometimes.
some really nicely constructed songs, little bit of a forgotten classic
Couldn't play this on Pandora but listened to other albums by same artist.
will give this another listen, am finding that I might be liking old school hip hop
I’ve spent far too much time obsessing over who put me onto this album the first time around. I actually had a copy of it, and although I didn’t listen to it that often I was a fan of these songs. Yes, it’s a long album and some of the better songs are towards the end, but I think it works as a whole. I spent a lot of time exclaiming ‘Oh’ when I heard these again remembering what clever and soulful songs these were. Magic in the Air and Disillusion are standouts. Where is Damon Gough now I wonder…?
Quirky and whimsical, this was mostly a pleasure to listen to, except for the (thankfully short) Body Rap.
some less sad elliot smith vibes with some alex g too
My emotional response to this album is astonishing! I think it’s foundations are in 15 year old me starting to feel like I was finding myself In a really good way. Starting to be happy with who I was becoming. The opening bars to The Shining still gives me that feeling deep in my gut that I’m about to pour out some sort of emotion. For some reason, I fill with happy tears. Yet it’s not my favourite album in the world! Weird! 4.4
Hit me at the right time
Nice, calm, indie folkish
Really rather enjoyed that. I didn't realise he is an indie singer-songwriter, thought it would be shouty stuff. Some lovely introspective, sparse lyrics accompanied by intricate, almost plodding melodies. I enjoy the switch-ups too, few different time signatures and instrumentations help keep it interesting. Once Around the Block, and Stone on the Water, were my favourite songs. My criticism is that it is a bit long.
Got a bit of a soft spot for badly drawn boy. Not sure I've listened to a whole album before but it was pretty much as I expected. Similar to the doves. Got a bit of that good old British sadness to it. Highlights: Disillusion The shining Once around the block Extra points for being a city fan
this album reminds me a lot of the 90s alt-psych revival stuff that i like from around the same time period. in particular, it reminds me a lot of the stuff from elephant 6, especially the olivia tremor control, which i adore. so yeah, this album is a pretty cool, fun, psych-y time.
Interesting
I came into this liking Badly Drawn Boy, but I hadn't heard this album. I think this might be my favorite of his. Some of the fart-y stuff at the end of songs doesn't work for me, but the musicality throughout is really strong. When I'm in the mood for BDB in the future I'll come to this before the other albums I've defaulted to in the past.
I was expecting to not like it, as I'm not really a folk-rock kind of guy, but I do like down-tempo/ambient/trippy music which he seems to mix with folk-rock here. So, I ended up liking it.
Damn, really cool stuff. This was a total blind spot and did not disappoint. What a wonderful, quirky surprise. I feel like this is everything people pretend Neutral Milk Hotel is. 4/5
Badly Drawn Boy played a big part of our early relationship. We went to see him three or four times in the early noughties. He was always interesting. He announced his retirement at two of them. And performed an ad-hoc wedding ceremony at another. I thought I knew this album. It turns out it was only about 45% that I heard before. His second album, 'About a boy', got played a lot. But I don’t think I ever bought Bewilderbeast. It was the early Napster age, and honestly I think I just took what I could and put them on a CD. My memory is hazy at this point. This album is great. It's very Manchester at the turn of the Millennium (my fave Manchester sound). With bits of colliery brass, 60s psych, general wonkiness, some great beats (I suspect via Andy Votel), a sort of 70s Philly soul piano and Damons lovely, lovely voice. Loads of instruments, loads of detail and warmth - really happy to have spent some time with the whole thing properly.
Indie rock, indie folk, chamber pop
Love it. He’s British, but this album is pure NYC nostalgia for me, everytime I listen (which is still once a year at least) I feel like I’m walking around Central Park in the Fall. Bought this cd the week I moved to NY in 2007 on a bartender recommendation - at Kim’s on Broadway. Highly recommend to not skip this one! technically there are a couple skippable songs on here, but its mostly gems throughout. A classic for fans of the Beatles and early 2000s indie rock.
"The Shining", "Everybody's Stalking", "Stone on the Water", and "Once around the block" are all great tracks. A great neo-folk singer-songwriter album with electronica elements. I had totally forgotten about this talented guy. 3.5 stars rounded up.
most songs were dope, a few songs were pretty fucking terrible. odd combo
Woolly hatted bloke! Whatever happened to him? I knew the singles, but was never interested in listening to his album at the time. It's pleasant enough, with enough going on in his arrangements for me to keep listening to it (The first impressions at the beginning). 'Another Pearl' and 'This Song' (loved the tremelo), 'Cause a Rockslide' and didnt mund the poppy 'Disillusion are really good songs. It actually gets better and better as the album progresses. I do think the most famous song on the album 'Once Around the Block' is one of the weakest. The last song could have been dispensed with though, if it had been slimmed down by 5 tracks it could have got a 5, but this was the CD era where an album could be as long as you wanted! Gets a 4 for being A) really good and B) not what I was expecting.
Trip down memory lane. It’s held up well actually; more consistent than I remembered.
Geweldig album, lekkere zachte tunes met tock riffs tussendoor. Ik hou m in mijn playlist!
Indie rock, indie folk, chamber pop.
Album 197 of 1001 Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast Rating : 3.5 / 5 An hour of pleasant music. Really mellow tunes. A good one for the library.
Good, calm driving music through the woods and mountains :-)
Really nice touch from, surely Heaton Moor’s, maybe more Withington, in fact he probably just lives in London’s own
A worthy Mercury winner
I love his sound so much. It’s really interesting to listen to. Just doesn’t quite have the tunes!
I had only heard/liked one song on the album besides what I knew from the Hugh Grant movie. This had several good songs I added to my playlists.
One loved this record in the day, or more the artist, for it still sounds a bit soundtrack-y random and slightly inscrutable, though it's frequently haunting and beautiful and thoughtful. It's oddly endearing and sweetly, wistfully melancholic. "Disillusion" is a great song. Downsides are that a few of the discordant bits (e.g., intentionally shaky sounding vocal on "Pissing in the Wind") feel overplayed and perhaps it's slightly overlong (and a touch self-indulgent). Still one does sort of expect that from a producer's record; thankfully, in this case, it's a very skilled and capable producer.
Pretty nice album ... Except for few experimental tunes, several excellent songs of this brilliant musician I did not know before
A great find. Enjoyed most every track. Never listed to this album before but I will in the future.
I was prepared to label this an unfocused and too lengthy run-of-the-mill 00s indie effort. But then around 'Cause a Rockslide' and 'Pissing in the Wind' the album seemed to open up. Don't get me wrong, it's still unfocused and too long, but it manages to stand out among a gazillion similar-sounding indie records of the time.
What a surprise. I wasn’t really looking forward to dig into this due to the length, but I was really taken aback. It’s a bit unfocused at times and I must admit that a few moment could have been omitted. But the general songwriting is so strong that it makes up for it all. Twists and turns and weird intermezzos that bears some resemblance to Elephant 6 records of the 90’s. A gem that I will definitely return to.
A few weeks after signing up to Spotify, they sent me “Once Around the Block” and my co-judge and I have been listening to it ever since. I love the rhythm guitar, his frail voice and the dreamy lyrics. I've been back to the well a few times, trying to find another song that grabs my attention in the same way, but I haven't had any luck. That said, a number of the songs on this LP have a bright feel to them, although I've read the lyrics are dreary. He's not afraid to mix it up and bring in piano or strings. I'm impressed that this won the 2000 Mercury Prize, because serious bands with serious albums are usually among the contenders – although I must say Nitin Sawney’s “Beyond Skin” would have been my pick that year.
I thought this was a bit overhyped at the time, and 23 years on still think that. There are some great tracks, and there's maybe a shorter 5 star album within it.
Have a little bit of PTSD of music from this era which makes it hard to listen without prejudice but I enjoyed this a bunch. Very scattershot and possibly could be ten minutes shorter but works throughout
Great sounds. Not crazy about his voice.
It's a fairly solid record, perhaps a tad too long but felt engaged the whole way through.
Like Elliott Smith, but spicier, as if King Crimson co-wrote the album. In other words, I loved it.
Different, refreshing, soothing. All the haters who say this wasn't "revolutionary", who cares! This music is actually decent and listenable, unlike a good chunk of these "revolutionary" albums. Some of these songs will go on the playlist, so I'm glad I was introduced to this. Summary: I like.
Nice
Stunning album. It’s lush while having a sense of being rooted in musical traditions, and it knows that it’s good, too. The opener is the highlight for me, it’s just a beautiful track through and through. From the runtime I definitely will need more listens to fully absorb what this album has to offer, but my first impression was very positive.
a chocolate box of indie aesthetics that's about 20 minutes too long. noticeably good first half
- I can’t find the words to describe this but I enjoyed it mightily
Review
I enjoyed this album. Always interesting and never boring. Need to give it another listen.
Jackson Pollock: 1hr. Fuck my ass. Nice first 20 seconds. Ok first track pretty good, at least on first impression. Not to punishing or anything, haven't been annoyed at any point. Perhaps more boring than the artist or album name suggest however. Body Rap sounds different. Once around the block is a cool track. Best Tracks: The Shining Another Pearl Once Around the Block Bewilderbeast Worst Tracks: This song Overall: While not jarringly different like expected from the cover and artist name, the album was relatively enjoyable/interesting. Some good highlights in the first track, "Another Pearl", "Once around the block" with only one real low light in the punishment to the ears that is "This song". I would strongly doubt that this would ever enter into my most loved albums or anything like that. But it is clearly still a good album, worth of a a decent four (7.8 feels right). Slightly bloated. I did this only 2/3 through...
I remember enjoying this album a lot more when I first heard it. Might just be having a bad day today. I never made the comparison with Elliott Smith, but I hear a lot of similarities. This is pretty good. I'd come back to it again.
I don’t know how this guy got compared to nick drake. it’s good but not that good
Very fun and different! Kinda sounds like a movie score.
This thing was wild, went many different ways and all was done very competently. Just wish things were a little more coherently put together, otherwise an album I can see myself going back to
Great little find, enjoyed very much. Great melodies, lyrics and instrumentation
An overall weird album but not in a bad way. Definitely more chaotic than anything else. The music was good and there were definitely small moments that remind me of Future bands like The Black keys and Cage the elephant though I'm not 100% sure that the influence was actually that far reaching
I really enjoyed this. It grew on me
Very interesting album. Lots of uniqueness in this one.
Peaceful and jazzy indie folk that takes inspiration from midwest emo and the likes of Elliot Smith (especially in the vocals). Many cute styles are thrown in to make a fun and diverse listen, like the hip hop of "Body Rap", the lofi of "This Song," or the jammy instrumental of "Bewilderbeast." It goes too long and doesn't blow me away but it's consistent and there's so much to like here. It has hooks and grooves. Favorites: The Shining, Stone on the Water, Camping Next to Water, Once Around the Block, Cause a Rockslide, Pissing in the Wind, Say It Again
It gets better as you listen to it more. It was a forebearer to the lo-fi movement that tended to grow more popular through the 2000's.
Interesting album, the first song was terrible, but overall developed very well. Soft indie rock, and groovy. 4/5 for being surprised by an indie rock band. It is very relaxed, not really for me, but an overall solid album.
Another great find. I love a song with French horn as an accent element
He may be badly drawn but he
For a folk-pop album from the early 2000s, this holds up surprisingly well.
Never mind before. Actually good.
Still excellent, but perhaps seems a little overlong today and a tad rando in the number of musical shifts. It does not quite grab one as forcefully as it seemed to do back in the day. Still so much to like with a half-dozen gems, easily. And some forgettable DIY (and emo) probably saw this as a jumping-off point, one doesn't think he can be held responsible for that. After all, this is much more sophisticated.
The Shining
This album is really clever and engaging, as well as musically diverse and elegantly arranged. The lyrics can get a little dark, but musically there's an underlying sweetness that balances out the overall mood really well. I appreciate one reviewer's comparison to Todd Rundgren, which I think is really spot on. Damon Gough shares Rundgren's natural/oddball sense of pop songcraft and taking diverse ideas into interesting territory. He also shares Rundgren's tendency to wander into the weeds a bit to do whatever weird thing he feels like. In that sense, not everything lands well, but when it does it's marvelous. Fave Songs: Magic in the Air, Pissing in the Wind, Once Around the Block, Cause a Rockslide, Epitaph, Say It Again, Fall in a River, Blistered Heart, Bewilderbeast, Disillusion
I really enjoyed this
4/5. Honestly a pretty wholesome collection of songs. Sounds like pastoral fantasy put into song. Whisky and free.
Chulo, coneixia cançons soltes
Wist niet wat te verwachten, en was positief verrast. Goed afwisselend, en een dosis humor af en toe
This is good. Folk indie rock. It's exactly what I want.
It has a good vibe. I found it good as background noise.
Good late-90s indie. Some cool experimental moments on here as well. Fun listen.
this one takes me back. early oughts indie discovery on pandora.
Starts out surprisingly pretty, and stays quite pleasant throughout. Teetered on boring but all in all I enjoyed the whole album quite a bit.
Really interesting sounds and production design. Into the vibe but not as connected to the lyrics and musicianship.
Makes me think of depressed lesbian single mums and little boys with terrible fringes hanging around with Hugh Grant. Great album though.
Well Bort this. No references to leukaemia though, which, as we now know, is essential. Doesn't need to be over an hour long. I know people who have recovered from leukaemia in that time.
Exactly why I’m doing this challenge. I would have never heard of it otherwise and I enjoy it so much! Great collection of songs with simple yet beautiful melodies, interesting acoustic guitar arrangements, nice and warm voice (but not too pretty luckily!). There’s plenty of songs I marked as favourites so I’ll just pick one in particular - Pissing in the wind! I’m rating this as 4/5. Not a 5 because I feel like it’s a bit too long and has too many filler, which makes this album go all over the place sometimes. But still very much enjoyable piece of music.
Highlights: Stone on the Water, This Song
Thought this was really good. Kinda reminded me of a whimsical British Elliot Smith.
I found this really charming. It seems to have a depth that goes beyond the surprising little gems of songs. It was really making my imagination run wild, I was getting a lot of imagery popping into my mind, that seemed to be coming mainly from the sonic textures. Will be back for more.
lovely album with many different layers. Reminds me of a different time in my life
Otkad ovo nisam sluša
The tunes here worked pretty well for me. This album had a strong start and I found it pulling me back in several times as it played in the background. This one I'd give a closer listen to. I like the production a lot, I like the genre-jumping songs - sounds almost like a mixtape. I didn't give a close enough listen to buy into the details of the lyrics, but I think I just might.
Much better than expected. Like an earlier british Sufjan Stephens. 4 for music, 4.5 for being pleasently surprised by the sound of something I never would have heard otherwise.
Somehow I never got into Badly Drawn Boy in spite of being into a lot of similar bands but I'm listening now and really enjoying it. I just love aughts era indie.
Excellent. Great recommendation
Nadal zatasmowany, ale uszczesliwiony dzisiejszym odsluchem
Nice but similar songs
Interesting laid back listen
bello e vario
A good range of moods and styles, yet still feels cohesive. Fans of Neutral Milk Hotel should enjoy this.
Knew the name Badly Dawn Boy but didn’t even know what type of music they played. Started out not liking this then eventually clicked with it. Apparently they had members of the band Doves play on this so I can see the lineage.
Been a fan since it came out. It is a bit too long and not as good as his soundtrack About a Boy
Listened to on 9/30/22 3/5 Favorite song: the shinning I loved this album and how easy it was to listen to but then when you focused it got even better. I played it on repeat and liked it more every time
Good singer songwriter stuff that sounded interesting. Would listen again.
Major Elliott Smith vibes and really bad cover art. Even the sounds of the instrumentation makes it sound like he sat down in the room where an Elliott Smith recording had just taken place to put down a few of his own tunes. That being said, I still like it.
Great songwriter. Couple of top notch songs on here. Not quite 5 stars though
It’s brilliant but I think it’s a tad too long. Knock 10-15 minutes off this and I’d give it 5 stars.
Great
Could possibly have done with trimming a few tracks from this but generally a very pleasant listen. Reminds me of good times
Indie rock, indie folk, chamber pop
4/5 Pretty good album. Kinda weird and quirky. Not the greatest but pretty good.
Háklassa lyftutónlist, er að fíla þetta.
"The Hour of the Bewilderbeast" is the debut album by English singer-songwriter and muliti-instrumentalist Damon Gough known as Badly Drawn Boy. Gough wrote, produced, sang and played many of the instruments with accompaniment by members of The Doves and Alfie. The music is classified as indie pop, indie folk, chamber pop and lo-fi. The music has also been compared to Nick Drake. All those are appropriate; I would add in Elliot Smith too but Gough's music is not quote as dark as Drake and Smith. There is more optimism and I actually quite liked this album. Many others did too as it won the 2000 Mercury Prize for the best album released in the UK by a British or Irish act. It looks like the PJ Harvey album was technically released in 2001 for the award. "The Shining" starts the album with horns and strings with an acoustic guitar kicking in later. A beautiful song...sitting in the sun with someone you love. The second song "Everbody's Stalking" is the antithesis of the first song. Electric guitar. More rock. The music has a paranoid feel....well, it's a song about stalking. "Camping on the Water" has lovely interplay between the acoustic guitars. Great melody. A lot of similarities to Elliot Smith here. He's feeling broken and needs to get away. "Once Around the Block" continues an equally strong second album half. It's more jazzy with the drums, bass and rhythm guitar. A kind wah-wah guitar playing along too. A love song..first love? "Magic in the Air" relies on a piano, harp and an orchestra in the background. A new found love. "Pissing in the Wind" has a country feel with a slide guitar. The song builds. He sounds a lot like Richard Ashcroft of The Verve. An album highlight for Me. This is a really good album. No real faults other than it was quite long at 73 minutes (ah, the CD era). I don't know if Gough ever quite reached these levels in the future. This one, however, is worth checking out.
Liked this. Saved a few songs on Spotify. Cool sounds, super 2000. Would listen again.
I surprisingly really enjoyed this album. It's a nice way to start a morning and is really pretty.
Not my style but it’s listenable and makes you feel
This was a surprisingly good album and easy listening.
I remember liking the name Badly Drawn Boy when I first heard it, but I had not listened to the music and I am glad I now have. Really good album here. Excellent songwriting and all performed so very well. I can hear various influences in his work but they don't totally take over and dominate the sound. He makes it his own. I'll have to check out his other albums too. Very cool.
Great, blast from the past.
I got this album as a gift back in the day it came out, never heard of them...and then a couple of years later was shocked to hear the soundtrack for About a Boy was being composed by Badly Drawn Boy...and both are excellent.
I enjoyed it but i think its a little long but awesome album nontheless
It’s a good thing this album came up over a weekend. This is one of the albums that delivers the ultimate payoff for this experience. It is something I’ve never even heard of and likely never would have listened to. I enjoy albums where the artist writes and plays a multitude of instruments because often something truly unique comes out. Especially on debut albums. That doesn’t mean they are always good, but they can be refreshing. I love the atmosphere of this album, as in the horn and string drenched The Shining. The left/right echo/delay on This Song is trippy. It feels seizure inducing with headphones, but is much more subtle through a speaker system. A couple things I’m not all in on: his voice isn’t great and the album is too long. It feels like he tried to get all his ideas on his first album, which is understandable. But holding 20 minutes of this material back would have been a net positive.
A lovely album that I didn't expect to enjoy. I wouldn't have listened to it without the generator.
Surprisingly great indie rock from the turn of the century. This album deserves better album art lol.
Good millenial indie, with a bit of bloat. Probably due to a diverse set of sounds throughout.
I liked one of the songs before listening to the album
I missed this in the early 2000s, so mainly new stuff. Apart from a couple of unavoidable singles, which were probably the least interesting things on the album, this was a varied listen. Gentle tunes, which sometimes meant the songs seemed to float over me. Not unpleasant, but maybe a little forgetable. That said, I enjoyed my time with the Boy, his use of soundeffects and occasion washed out samples worked well for me. There are obvious comparisons to Elliot Smith and Nick Drake, both of whom can be felt in this, if as shadows of tribute, but a pretty decent tribute.
Badly Drawn Boy is just one guy: Damon Gough. Gough plays guitar, piano, harmonica, percussion, harp, etc. Obviously very talented, Gough is filled to the brim with ideas for his very first album. After a string of EPs, you could tell that Gough was eager to put together something bigger and more impactful. This is a helluva record. Incredibly wistful and complex, it's obvious that Gough put a lot of heart and soul into this record. Some flavors of folk, pop, and indie weirdness in there too. In some ways it reminds me of OK Computer with how it utilizes strings and moments of peaks and valleys to create an overall ambitious record.
I was looking forward to this as have fond memories of when it came out and haven't listened to it recently. It didn't blow me away like it did when I first heard it, though still thoroughly enjoyable, but I'm giving it 4 because of how I felt then, not now
Alt-folk? Baroque pop? Who knows. Love this album; it’s full of sweetly light tracks offset by more urgent ones, darker in tone. Varied in arrangement and accompaniment, all 18 tracks hold the attention and showcase Damon Gough’s talent as composer and multi-instrumentalist. Completed, the album sits fully as a single statement, testament to the value of the long play format.
A delightful album I need to listen to more
I've always liked this album even if I couldn't give you the name of any of the tracks - it's not like there isn't some variety between them, it's just that it plays more as an album for me rather than any collection of memorable singles. For that reason maybe it might take a few spins before this clicks. My big negative is that it's too long - it'd have been perfect at about 45 minutes (the vinyl-era limitations were actually FEATURES) at which point the sameness of it sets in. There's definitely a strong Elliott Smith connection/homage in BDB's work and even if I find some of Smith's highs to be higher I think this is more consistently enjoyable. Highly melodic, multi-instrumental, creative and introspective - recommended in 40-45 minute segments :) 7/10 4 stars
Mahtava indielätty. Jonkun verran turhia biisejä, mistä sakotan.
Herkkä ja varsin kaunis levy. Vähän tasapainoilen kolmosen ja nelosen välillä, mutta menköön nyt 4/5.
Great album
Whatever happened to this guy. Like.
A solid 4 for me. Certainly an artist that seems to keep popping up here an there and I still find intriguing. Faves from this: Once Around the Block, Bewilderbeast, Pissing in the Wind, Disillusion
Som encorpado, de fundamento
Not bad. Enjoyable. Not gonna rush out and listen again, but still reasonably good music. Well written. A talent for sure.
Muito bom.
Love the construction of this album. To me, felt as a narrative of random memories, like opening a souvenir box with a collection of different nostalgic registers.
I enjoyed this album, much more my style than some of the others. Got an Arcade Fire feel from some of the songs. Probably need to listen to it a little more closely, but overall I thought it was enjoyable.
Mielenkiintoisia ralleja, uudelleen kuuntelemisen arvoinen
Beautiful music. At times it reminds me of Sufjan and other times Wilco. Too dang long though.
This sounded very familiar even though I've never listened to this album before. A bit long but a pleasant journey and was perfect for a long-ass walk with the dog on a sunny spring day
I genuinely enjoy this album. I like that some songs were indie folk sounding, some more indie rock and pop. The first song had me hooked, not every song was outstanding but there were some excellent instrumental moments featuring the piano in this album. The orchestral opening I could have listened to for a long time.
Liked it quite a bit. Great 90s indie rock.
4/5. Pretty soft, nice, and chill
Horrific album cover, terrific music. 3.75
Really enjoyed this, great atmosphere and mood to it.
I like :-)
I had heard the name of this artist but wasn't familiar with the music. Seeing that it was a British artist from the early 2000s didn't exactly fill me with hope, but I really liked it. Folky, but with a lot of variation in the instruments and musical styles. The production is very good. I could see myself buying this record 4/5
Y'know, I kinda sneered when this came up, but listening to it brought back a bunch of memories, and there are quite a few tracks I actually quite like... Fave track - "Once Around the Block" probably - "The Shining" too perhaps...
Really interesting album. Moody alternative rock with a little bit of grunge? And real instruments.
Indie. Interesante.
Really enjoyable album! Wish I heard it when it first came out!
Love this album - I was bought it when it came out. Many memories
Sometimes you just want a sad boy strumming the guitar. Catchy and soulful. Reminds me of a less emo Conor Oberst
Reminded me a lot of Elliott Smith. Some modern moments and some really neat breaks. *The Shining *Cause a Rockslide *Bewilderbeast
Having been born in 1990 this album came out before I had any real interest in music. This is my first time listening to it and I'm very glad that I'm using this generator and have been alerted to it. It contains a couple of 'classic' songs that I've heard before without knowing who the artist is. All in, this is a well produced 'soft-rock'/indie album with a fantastic laid back feel. Perfect for easy background listening.
👌🌞
Vraiment bon, beaucoup de style mais la production et les chansons sont tr3s belle et c’est bien fait. 4.5
A very soothing listen however a few forgetful tracks Fav tracks: The Shining, Bewilder, Fall in a River
I really liked this album back when it came out. Haven't listened to it much since then, so it's nice to revisit. Mellow, great melodies, emotional feel, heartbreaking lyrics. Never realized how similar to Elliott Smith some of this sounds, which is not a bad thing. Pissing in the Wind in particular is a great song, with the heartbreaking, desperate vocals and lyrics "Just give me something. I'll take nothing." 4 stars.
I should have maybe paid more attention to this band the first time round
Enjoyable and sweet.
I liked this - will listen to again.
Liked the first half a lot, 2nd half was a little more tedious, would probably give a 3.5 If i could but a 4 is fine for now, too
First time listening to this since I was in college. I loved it then and really enjoyed it now. Not just a good nostalgia hit
pleasantly surprised!
I really loved some of the songs on this album. Some of my favorites were The Shining, Another Pearl, This Song and, I think, Bewilderbeest.
Nice 90s indie stuff - pretty imaginative tunes and really cool sounds thrown across the mixes!
My first listen to Badly Drawn Boy and I must admit I was impressed! The Hour of Bewilderbeast is an interesting listen, with a varied range of influences and styles with a lush, full sound that will lead me to seek out more from BDB in the near future.
Great stuff
like it, bolton legend
Slightly embarrassing almost 130 albums in, but I think this is the first one ive ever listened to before. Kinda digging it. Easy 4 during work. Almost a 5 but my college years were too painful. also there are some boring songs.
Much better than I expected. Very clever. Used the album concept very well. Little snippets between songs was very adhesive to the experience.
This was a really nice, creative alternative rock/folk blend. It's very relaxing and enjoyable.
Really quite good. I'm already pretty into this sort of music anyway, as folk/rock/indie tend to be some of my favorite genres. I know this might seem boring to a lot of people, but eh, it worked for me, so that must count for something!
I really enjoyed this, inventive production and really solid songwriting
gimme that sad boi quirky shit any day
Reminds me of rainy car journeys when I was a child. Actually, I remember stealing this CD from my dad when I was like 12 and listening to it on a constant loop for a little while...
Pretty cool album, seems like it’d be fun to listen to while doing stuff (ha i don’t do stuff) Favorite track:Fall in a river
This album would have gotten a lot of hours of my time in a previous life. I got some Beck influencing in there.
yes, we like
