Someone told me their favorite band was talking heads once. This album got me no closer to knowing why.

Absolutely mesmerised, from start to finish. Some of this album's songs instantly made their way into my favourites playlist. Hadn't really given a chance to Talking Heads just yet, and I don't even know why. I regret not having listened to their music apart from Psycho Killer up until this point. In my head (pun intended), Talking Heads were just a one-hit wonder band. I didn't know how wrong I was until today. Bonus points because I like buildings AND food. 4.6/5, insane album.

I've listened to a bit of the Talking Heads before but I haven't really fallen in love with them like other people have. But after giving this album a good listen I think I get it. I still don't know if I *love* them though. I don't know if this is a good way to explain it, but sometimes when I listen to these guys I feel they get a little too silly with it and the goofometer in my head goes hard into the red. It takes me out of the album a little. But maybe in the future, after I've recalibrated the goofometer, I'll like it better. The Vibe: You've taken a very happy pill and are dance-walking down the sidewalk to the music only you can hear.

Lacking hits like on prior and latter albums. Sounds pretty good overall. They were still finding their sound.

Man idk I know i should like Talking Heads and I do, like the best songs by them are amazing, but the albums do not hit. I'm gonna keep trying, it has happened many times where albums or artists grew on me, but this wasn't that time.

While I like the band, I do think they have better albums than this one. It feels a bit bland and doesn’t really stand out as something special.

Love the interesting vocal range, and the instrumentals

Album peaks with the 2nd and 3rd to last songs, until then there just wasn’t really a melody that had me wanting to really focus on the music. The singer was disappointing, and a bit unfocused for much of the album.

Oduvijek sam smatrao da su najeuropskiji bend Amerike, band koji je rekao "hej, i mi možemo bit elitni, neće samo kolonijalisti bit (z gen) FAB". Ovo je njihov drugi album i prvi kojeg je producirao, pa i sam svirao synth i pjevao backove Brian Eno. Može li ovo otići u krivo? Postoji i deluxe verzija albuma, ali poslušati ću originalni. Čim je krenula gotovo, David Byrne me kupio sa svojim signature suludim poskakujućim glasom i falsetnim povicima - new wave i post-punk pršti. Ova pjesma je fantastična, pozitivno "nervozna". Euforičan uradak koji doslovno galopira u početak albuma! Pjesma, rekao bih, govori o istraživanju sebe i da budeš svoj bez da "kopiraš" ikoga drugog. Njegove riječi su mi oduvijek bile teže za shvatit. Jebeno odlično! Ide još par puta prije nego krenem dalje! 2. With Our Love - Bam u glavu funky new wave riff! Byrne u ovoj pjesmi i dalje ima vokalni tremolo k'o da jaše konja oboljelog Parkinsonom i tu i tamo zarlauče k'o da malim nožnim prstom dekne u Meblov stolac.. Da budem iskren, kurca ne kužim o čemu je ova pjesma: pogled kojeg zaboravljaju, komplimente kojih se srame, "to je problem naše ljubavi", prijatelji koji gledaju i uče... Pretpostavljam, problem komunikacije (možda sam jbg. fulo cijeli futbal ). Najtočnije u ovoj pjesmi je stih "What this all means?" Jer, ponavljam, kurca ne kužim. 3. The Good Thing - Šubidubiduuu! Jako ljetni sound. Svidja mi se kako melodija gitare prati vokal. Refren ko iz nekog rock mjuzikla sve pršti zborom. Sve u svemu svidja mi se. Tekst bez rime, ko neka propovjed, ponovno ne razumijem u potpunosti, ali kao, našao sam što mene goni da mi bude dobro i da sam zadovoljan i pun ljubavi i sreće, pa probaj i ti. 4. Warning sign - Da se uvod pjesme ubrza za 30-40 bpm-a dobili bi prvi Jungle, kupilo me odmah. Prva stvar na albumu koja ima malo mračniji prizvuk. Zanimljiv izričaj kroz gitare, zanimljivi akordi, disonance i blago škripanje, vidi se da je utjecalo na buduću Noise scenu New York-a sa Sonic Youthom kao predvodnicima. Byrne i dalje nastavlja sa svojim encrypted lyricsima, majke mi već me glava boli. Govori li on o warning signs u odnosima ili o kurvetini u hotelu koju plača pa ga svaki put opljačka, nemam pojma i više me nije ni briga. U svakom slučaju, pjesma ostavlja mračan i nelagodan osjećaj. Odlično! 5. The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls - Opet jedna vrlo zabavna pjesma. Do sada cijeli album je, kao i generalno njihov opus, dosta fokusiran na ritam sekciju. Ova stvar ima prekrasne syntheve koji čine ovu pjesmu jako dreamy kao i sama repetativnost. Rekao bih (jer ponavljam, on je "The Riddler" tekstova) da je pjesma o razlici muškaraca i žena, shvaćanju stvari i načinu u komunikaciji, makar vuče na lezbijsku ljubav. 6. Found a Job - Klasična Talking Heads pjesma, ritmična, repetativna, zabavna, sa vrlo melodičnim refrenom. Funky stvar gdje bass u versovima ima glavnu riječ (Tina Weymouth bass i Chris Frantz bubanj prekrasno razgovaraju instrumentima i tako su u skladu kao što je i njihov brak do dan danas) i divno ga je slušati tako rasplesanog sve do kraja kada se uključuje melodija na synthu koja odašilje pozitivu kao i sam teks. Naaaapokon jedan pjesma koju razumijem od prvog do zadnjeg stiha. Ljudi se svade oko sitnih stvari, tipa što je na televiziji, i unište vezu, ali poanta je napraviti svoj script za tv show koji se zove "život"; "Their show gets real high ratings, they think they have a hit." i tad je sve u skladu. 7. Artists Only - Pjesma započinje njihovim dreamy soundom, pa krene kao američki 60s psychedelic rock, samo čekam da napljugani Scooby i Shaggy izlete iza čoška tražeći nekaj da utaže munchiese. Dosta funky psychedelic stvar. Byrne se ovdje još više opustio sa svojim urlikanjem ko pijani propovjednik, da ne kažem debil, što savršeno odgovara sarkastičnoj kritici umjetnosti te prepotentnost i taštini u krugovovima umjetnika. 8. I'm Not in Love - Opa cupa, pa tu pa tu pa tu pa tu. Opet psychedelic funky, repeticija, post punk, new wave, sve kako treba biti. Ma krasno. Ova pjesma je ko neka mala mašina. Svaka pjesma do sada me iznenadi sa nečim novim koliko kod čvrsto drže žanr i prepoznatljivost... Jel potrebna ljubav na svijetu? 9. Stay Hungry - Sexy stvar u svakom smislu, od texta do mjuze. Kada odnos postaje fizički, palpitacija i ostani gladan za još. Makar možda se osvrnuo i na Schwarzeneggera jer se film sa njim zove isto Stay Hungry, tak da možda je i o bildanju. Svidja mi se ovdje malo više krautrock style od sredine; gitare sa finim echom, jednosaltavnim bassom i motoričkim bubnjem te synthevi pred kraj. 10. Take Me to the River Što reći za ovo, cover Al Greenove pjesme u njihovom stilu. Daleko od najbolje stvari sa albuma. Nemam puno tu kaj reći, osim što mi je zanimljivo i stvarno neobično da su samo ovu stvar sa cijelog albuma izdali kao single. 11. The Big Country - I za kraj, neobična country pjesma koja se potpuno razlikuje od svake, definitivno najmelodičnija. Pjesma govori kako nikad nebi mogao živjeli na selu bez obzira koliko je lijepo, mirno i zdravo, ali opet naznake da više ne želi gledati kroz prozor aviona u njih daje naslutiti da ipak iza tog snobizma postoji zavist i želja za mirnim životom malih mjesta a ne milijunskih gradovima. *****************THE END***************** Tuto finito... Ajoj, ne znam od kud da krenem... Predivno me iznenadio ovaj album, čak sam ga nekoliko puta preslušao jer mi je tako lijepo sjeo, dapače mislim da ću nastaviti slušati ostale albume. Ta ritmičnost, ta motorika, a opet toliko prekrasnih tonova i tekstura syntheva, neobičan način pjevanja, toliko emocija i humora i sve je tako čvrsto spojeno u jednu masu koja se ne može razjebat. Album koji dan danas zvuči moderno i originalno, barem meni koji sam ga prvi puta danas čuo. 9.5/10 (Stay Hungry for more Talking Heads)

Volim Talking Headse odmalena, ali ih nikad baš ne preslušavam u komadu (osim Remain in Light na ploči jer da) , prvenstveno zbog toga što me taj vokal dosta umara, tako da će ovo biti zanimljiv eksperiment. Na drugoj sam pjesmi trenutno i već mi je malo dosta 😁 Dap, definitivno mi nije za preslušavati cijeli album odjednom, malo čak postajem nervozna. 😄 Na trenutke mi zvuči kao Gobac na moto susretu u Popovači. Možda malo očita ta tranzicija iz tvrdih 70ih u mekše 80te i maybe je malo gone wrong. Zaključak: Ne bih rekla da je ovdje bilo puno toga što nisam očekivala (1 stvar koju nisam čula prije mi je dobra i to većinom zbog kljavica), čak bih rekla da sam malo generalno razočarana. Bit će 3 (ili 5.5).

6/10 Dosta sam uzbuđen zbog ovoga! Relativno nedavno sam ih počeo kužiti i nisam ih previše slušao, samo neke live koncerte i možda koji album Pišem kako slušam i kako mi dolaze misli. Super je ovo, već na prve dvije stvari Mislim da me kao klincu smetao njegov glas, nešto što mi se događa još uvijek s Radioheadom Kako album ide dalje kužim da mi njegov glas i dalje ne leži baš, a da su mi pjesme nekako iste Dosta bogat aranžman, a s druge strane dosta monoton. Nekako mi ovaj Rolling stones ravnjak na bubnju spušta kitu iako ima potpuno smisla u njihovom miksu Za razliku od Marlija, ovdje mi hit (take me to the river) dođe kao osvježenje i vidiš, ovdje mi taj dosadni bubanj odgovara Sve u svemu, za ovo malo što sam vidio i čuo, puno su mi bolji live i čini mi se da je ovo jedan od onih bendova koji su bolji za pustiti jednu cijelu pjesmu nego album

9/10 Right up my alley album. Siloviti ali zavodljivi signature glas David Byrnea, na trenutke neuroticne gitare i riffovi, bubanj koji nepretenciozno i lowkey jebe mame. Jedan od meni drazih postpunk/new wave albuma sa kraja 70ih. Nisam ga cuo skoro 10 godina i okrenuo mi je 180 stupnjeva ovaj usrani ponedjeljak. The Good Thing i I'm Not In Love favoriti koje zelim cuti opet i opet, a Stay Hungry i hit Take Me To The River su odmah iza njih. Sve volim kod ovog albuma, od produkcije Brian Enoa, zvuka, energije a i naslova koji mi iz nekog razloga mami osmijeh. U kasnijoj fazi bend mi je jos drazi pa je zato (samo) devetka. Cast mi je sto sam ga cuo uzivo 2018. kao solo act, hocemo jos!

The first time I was introduced to Talking Heads was by one Mr. Bigmouth Bass. This is a much better version. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

I think I screwed myself by listening to Remain in Light first because everything I hear from Talking Heads now will be compared to it. that being said I liked some songs on here, no doubt, but it's just more overall good rather than great to me

Talking Heads are a staple from my youth. I’ve always liked them, but have never loved them. They also seemed to have a new album at every turn. Solid but a bit tired for my taste.

I like this album a good bit more than their next album, Fear of Music. I've listened to Fear of Music on and off for 30 years now, and I don't get it. But even though this is better, it's not going to get over the "7 out of 10" hump, and as usual, I'm rounding down. Talking Heads are an artist (like many others) who have a lot of great songs, but I don't know that they have a truly great album.(Maybe I'm overlooking one.)

I love Talking Heads but this, for me, is the lesser of the Eno trilogy.

You know, for a band I would describe as "my second favourite," whose discography I have listened to front to back countless times, I find myself grasping at straws when asked to explain what makes them so special. The only thing I could posit is this: wiry and jittery with a funky-as-hell bottom end that was the band's secret weapon after all; they made the esoteric accessible and the mundane actually pretty wild when you stop and think about it. Titling an album 'More Songs About Buildings and Food' comes across as either a) lazy; b) dishonest; or c) so brutally honest that it leads you to explore and unpack your own reaction to it. This album marks the start of their collaboration with Brian Eno, who is responsible for cloudy background synths on "With Our Love" and "The Good Thing" and the needling, not-quite-highlife-but-give-it-a-couple-of-years-and-it-will-be-highlife guitar tone on "Found A Job" and "The Girls Want To Be With the Girls." Really, Brian Eno should be credited for helping define Talking Heads' musical innovation as much as the actual band members themselves (not sorry). As much as I like 'Speaking In Tongues,' there are some touches that I KNOW he could've added to strengthen the album, though I'll credit David, Tina, Chris, and Jerry for absorbing as much as they did and putting it into practice. But back to 'More Songs...' The thing I love most about the record is the way it feels, I don't know, more open? 'Talking Heads: 77' has such a deeply New York-claustrophobic atmosphere, but this album shows that they were a band in motion, casting their gaze forward past a horizon few other artists could see. One reviewer on RYM made an especially salient point about how the album cover demonstrates the band's awareness of the coming digital era with the hundreds of Polaroids resembling computer pixels (an idea that would be made more overt on 'Remain in Light.') At this stage, instead of paranoia, there was excitement at the possibility of how the digital era could open up the world. It feels like no coincidence that the sound on "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel," "I'm Not In Love," and "The Big Country" sound so wide and expansive. I could see why The Ramones (another band I love) were annoyed as hell with Talking Heads. A song like "I'm Not In Love" showed them that they could do punk just as well without needing to dumb anything down or resist any ambition. Yes, it's a pretty simple song structure, but it sure takes a tried-and-true formula and turns it on its head through the employment of soft-loud dynamics and paper-shredder guitars buzzing throughout. "Take it easy, baby, don't let your feelings get in the way." Maybe David Byrne could have said, "fuck you," but that would be the moron's way out. Speaking of David Byrne, I know he has become some sort of Gen Z idol as of late, but if anyone deserves a pat on the back, it's Chris Frantz. A Southern boy who could read the writing on the wall before any of 'em about the rise of hip-hop and rap music. That slow, lugubrious drum beat on their cover of Al Green's "Take Me To the River" sets the stage for a swampy-sounding, sweltering affair in which lust and baptism are interchangeable. That bottom end I was talking about? Only made possible because of Frantz's love and appreciation of American Black music. I may be mistaken, but including this cover on live sets may have been Frantz's idea, and including this cover on the album was definitely Eno's. Lovely album art. A sign of what eventually did come. Who doesn't like the talking heads but it is not the best album (still good though)

Smooth, grooving easy rock tunes. Simple as.

One word grating With the exemption of the last 4? jam type song, I found the music very messy and unresolved. Also he sings like someone's squeezing his nuts and tickling his gooch.

I love Talking Heads and I love so many of the songs on this album. But I have such a strong preference for their live albums that I find the studio recordings like this one a little thin and boring. Like the equipment just seems too basic, vocals are hard to hear, etc. It could really use a remaster! I listened to this while driving so don't have listening notes but a few: Opening with "Thank you for Sending me an Angel" - perfection. I just want to get up and jog around the room, pumping my fists. Including the cover of "Take me to the River" obviously a massive moment for them. Closing with "The Big Country"... wonderful. Would absolutely listen again, but prefer to hear all these tracks on their live albums!! 4.3/5

A Talking Heads album full of songs I mostly didn't know. Except I swear I've heard a cover of I'm Not In Love but I can't remember now by who.

When this website sends me yet another Rush album it’s “they REALLY should limit how many times an artist can appear” but when it’s my favourite band, I’m delighted every time. What can I say? I’m a hypocrite. This is the Heads’ bluesiest output and I prefer to be able to dance but it’s still a treat.

This is the transitional album where Brian Eno came on board as a producer, turning Talking Heads from an arty NYC proto punk band into something that you could dance to. I haven’t listened to this album as much as some of the others - not because it’s not good, but because the live versions of some of these songs on Stop Making Sense (notably their cover of Al Green’s Take Me to the River) are even better than the ones here.

It's interesting to hear the direction they started to take with this album, after a debut album that was more raw. Somehow about half the songs were a bit irritating to me, but some were real gems, even though the album seems to be pretty coherent.

TIL that Talking Heads were American. One of those bands I’ve always felt I ought to like more than I do.

Not a huge Talking Heads guy. This was alright though.

It was alright, i liked the instrumentals better than the vocals. my favorite songs on this project currently are: I’m Not in Love, The Good Thing, and Found a Job. however the end part of The Big Country was fun.

One of the the classic Talking Heads' albums.

The Heads have some of the banging-est bangers of their era, but everything else just feels like tucked in music for folks who eternally think they're the smartest people in the room

First time listening to this full album in decades and I wish I'd done it sooner. I prefer 77, but this is upbeat enough and has nice rhythmic components characteristic of Talking Heads.

I’m not crazy about this album. The overall sound wasn’t really my thing and I feel like there was a lot of things that felt like they were missing. I probably won’t go back to this much. 5/10

Talking heads were always going to impress me because they are just such a top tier band and I like their other stuff lots. Definitely sensing elements of classic rock with a funky rhythm to it that diverted it from what I was expecting. Would totally put these on my playlist!

This is a band I wouldn't know how to describe, but Spotifiy uses art-school punk and that seems so appropriate. There is something very mainstream about them but also artistic and unique, likely why they are so popular. I don't know how to describe or explain them or the feelings I get from their music, so I can't say what it is I like or don't like exactly. The mainstream factors are missing so its hard to explain. Love Take me to the River. Beyond the hit for me in some songs it seems perfect, Found a Job, Stay Hungry and Artists Only, I didn't feel left wanting. But others (I'm Not in Love) just seemed like they were missing something or didn't make me feel full and left me wanting. Overall they are unique, different, talented and I am sure they hit certain people just right. For me it was hit and miss, but I just don't know why (but that might be what they are going for)

I liked the first Talking Heads album (Talking Heads 77) but didn't care for this one as much. I don't think it's recorded very well. The vocals are too muffled and reverby. The songs aren't as catchy as their first album. There are many parts that I like but the sum of those parts don't really gel into a good album.

I had higher hopes for this. There is far stronger Talking Heads music. Almost feels like abstract art.

David Byrne and the Talking Heads. Always something unique and special, and sometimes challenging. No difference here. Byrne's extraordinary way of singing perfectly matches the music and carries it throughout the album. As stated in the wiki article, the rhythm section is essential to this experience.

This isn't my favorite Talking Heads album, but wow... going from Depeche Mode to this is like following up McDonalds with a Michelin star restaurant.

Rootsy, swampy, bluesy, soulful, rock album at a lean 33 min. A couple of classic songs in Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary. Forgerty seems to drive the ship and really elevates the band. A loose jammy feel to the music. But other than a handful of moments, nothing really pops here. It’s all fine, but doesn’t seem particularly special. This band has better efforts.

One of the easiest 5*s we'll ever get. The instrumental at the end of Found A Job is as good as it gets

Fairly enjoyable listen, but it's not quite the Talking Heads I'm looking for. You can hear some of the funkyness and weirdness that makes them great, but they hadn't quite gotten it all together in 1978. "Take Me to the River" is the best track, but man it's a hell of a cover. Rounding up from 3.5 stars

Very good album. Funky and interesting. A few songs in the middle were less enjoyable than others, but overall a positive listen.

Slightly repetitive but fun

Those who appreciate a little bit of quirk, and are willing to embrace showmanship and intentional style are going to find a way to love this album. There is not much else to say about Talking Heads that has not been said already. The below is taken from a previous review of another album, and the sentiment remains. Musically, the album doesn't have the disarray or chaotic elements usually associated with anti-establishment expectations. The compositions are well-timed, clean, and downright professional at times while still maintaining that blatant disavowal of what could only be described as mainstream. Vocals, while weird and, again, seemingly about nothing, astonishingly fit. Fun, immediately gratifying, welcomely disruptive, are just a few ways to describe how this album is overall. No commitment required to actually listen to it, but interesting enough to hear it all the way through rather than skipping.

I can't decide whether this is good or not. They have a style of their own, can see people being super into this but not one id revisit. 3*

B-Side is peak Eno X Talking Heads. Pulling some of Byrne's frantic energy woth a more danceable rhythm. Still embryonic and not a 5-Star Talking Heads album, mostly due to side A. SAVED songs: - The Good Thing - Take Me To The River - The Big Country

Have always heard of these guys, but never took the time. Kind of weird, don't know if I would re-listen...I feel like I'm supposed to like this, but just can't muster it.

Take Me To The River is good but it is the only song worth more than one listen so 2 stars or D- for the album.

Can only handle a little of Talking Heads at a time. Full album is too much. Next

I am coming to appreciate the Talking Heads and David Byrne a bit more as I hear albums in their entirety. Great musically, but, I don't always relate to the songs lyrically and Byrne's delivery. Still, some notable songs on this album including "Artists Only", "Take Me To The River" and "The Big Country".

What a great title name. Has one of my fav Talking Head songs and they are one of my favs all time. Yet, I cannot give this album 5⭐️. It’s good but their other albums seemed to be better at keeping me interested.

i appreciate this album more on every listen but i still don’t fully vibe with it as much as remain in light or speaking in tongues. just not quite as many compelling hooks, though it is at least dancy/propulsive.

I'm not sure which songs were about buildings or food, but they were pretty darn good regardless. I especially messed with the songs that had more unique synth and guitar lines, like Warning Sign. I would give this a 4.5 if I could.

You. Cant. See. It. 'Til. It's. Finsihed! Solid album, with Tina Weymouth's basslines driving the ship. It's been a very long time since I've dusted this off start-to-finish and it mostly holds up. David Byrne's voice doesn't stand as strong on its own (compared to the arrangements with backup singers on RiL and SiT). Liked it better than 77, but not as much as Remain in Light. Loses a lot of momentum creatively after "artists only", with side 2 much less strong than side 1. Favorite songs - Thank you for Sending me an Angel, Artists Only Least Favorite - Take me to the River (suffers from overplay) (Strangely, just had Fear of Music the day before yesterday. Noted that not all TH albums need to be on this list, and at this point I'm beginning to suspect that they might be . . .)

Eh, it’s fine. Nothing stood out and grabbed my attention.

Musically this was an interesting one. Well crafted, slinky post punk/new wave stuff. Very tight band. But I realized that David Byrne’s vocals are kind of hit and miss for me. Don’t think this is one I’ll be returning to on a regular basis.

I generally like the Talking Heads and this album is likable but not really memorable.

So, Talking Heads feel like a unique band, but one that I struggle with at times. I like some songs a lot, such as their version of Take Me to the River. In fact, the second half of the album is generally more enjoyable than the first. Many songs can feel repetitive and I get bored, and want to skip. They're definitely creative, but the album feels very hit and miss.

I really don't know how Talking Heads manage this, but this album feels like it should be super generic pop rock, but somehow they created something that is immensely creative but super safe and accessible at the same time. Only Talking Heads could bend the rules of music like that.

Talking Heads, rock, nichts besonderes

As much as I love the title of this album, I was quite bored through it all. I'm feeling badly that I didn't enjoy the Talking Heads as much as I thought I would, but also that maybe we didn't need all of their first four albums. (There were better early albums and I think there were later albums that were more distinctive and that I quite liked!) I just didn't get anything there that I loved. "Take Me to the River" is the one hit I knew, and it is probably one of my least favorite of the Talking Heads hits.

For the plane ride, this was quite alright. Again, it surprised me how much my displeasure for Talking Heads seemed to wane in my older years. However, when I took a listen to the highlight reel this morning before I made my rating, it was a challenge for my ears. Must simply depend on the day/setting how much I can enjoy Talking Heads.

In this project I’ve greatly grown in my appreciation of Talking Heads. But this album underwhelmed me a bit. I didn’t feel it was as good as some of the others. It was very expected to me. Nothing stood out on it as much and I was just left feeling whelmed. Nothing bad here, but it isn’t going to be a go-to Talking Heads listen for me.

Yeah sorry I'm in the "Don't get it" camp when it comes to Talking Heads, they have some great singles and they do mostly sound like themselves, not anyone else. Just find it generic of itself. Don't think they are as revolutionary as people say expecially given all the grat stuff that was happening in the late 70s and early 80s despite the singer's "oh so quirky" delivery and the energetic rthyms it's all a bit samey for me, and bland.

More spazz-rock I could have done without. I really struggle to understand what would lead someone to make an album of these songs? A hate of music? Over-intellectualizing music? Autism? Whatever it was, it's not worth agonizing over. I listen and I move on.

It's okay. David Byrne sounds suitably bonkers- I like that. Not a bad album, but also didn't make me want to listen again, particularly. But I admire their style.

Talking Heads are instantly recognisable. They sound like nobody else, and nobody ever sounded like them, which is a good thing. I like their fidgety sound and interesting lyrics, and bought later albums. 'Take Me ToThe River' stands out, a cover and the only track I know well. An album that deserves more listens and the rating could go up but I don't have time now!

I appreciate Talking Heads but less of what has made them cool to me was present here than I expected.. maybe more of this comes in later albums?

Pretty good. Feels like they were still finding their sound a bit with this album. Talking Heads are at their best when they’re groovy and there was a fair bit of that here. Strong 3 but didn’t wow me enough for a 4.

I said previously that there is are Talking Heads albums I wouldn't give 5 stars to; this is the only one from 77-84 that that's true for. It's a good album, undoubtedly, but it's also clearly a transitional album that suffers a little in retrospect. It's telling that the biggest song here is a cover: More Songs lacks the punch of Talking Heads 77, but it also lacks the muscle and hookiness and expansiveness of the subsequent three albums. It's still compelling and propulsive, but there's no originals here that belong in the Talking Heads pantheon.

Such a great album. By one of my absolute favourite band. I love all of their albums. But their first 5 especially are incredible.

Just sounds like any Talking Heads album

Not one's favorite TH record, but certainly there's ample quality and a decently wide range of feels – scratchy/itchy/funky ("With Our Love," "Found a Job") to bouncy/pleasant ("The Good Thing") – and tense/off-beat/disconess ("I'm Not In Love,") that is very much on brand. "Stay Hungry" mixes all those vibey modes to pretty singular effect. By far the best cut is "Big Country," which tips both "This Must Be the Place" (one of the essential songs of the '80s [or any era]) and DB's solo True Stories project). The Al Green cover never was much to one's liking and time hasn't done anything to change that reaction. To be clear, there is much that's middling and fairly forgettable and would be far excelled by the far superior future efforts. As with other early TH records, this remains worth knowing, if only to contextualize what was to come.

Cool enough. Byrnes voice is a little thin yet, they don't quite create the soundscapes nor scale the heights they do elsewhere.

I know this isn't most people's thing, but I can get behind it. It's cooler than most of the albums I've had to put up with so far, and I actually enjoyed listening to it from beginning to end. There was only one hit from it, though, so it's not a classic, and it's DEFINITELY not the Talking Heads album I would have gone with. They have much better work, and calling this great would be taking away from their better albums.

This was an album where I had an idea of what I was getting to, but had more fun than expected. The Talking Heads brought all of the fun of the new wave era and I found a few sounds out side of the Billy Big Mouth Bass classic, “Take Me to the River”…this was highlighted by the upbeat “I’m Not in Love”, which was promptly added to a playlist or two. This is an album you’ll need to hear if you’re into (or getting into) the new wave sound.

`Am sure there will be more Talking Heads / David Byrne to come. Funky, spiky with Byrne's unique delivery - you know what you're going to get here. If it's their second album, then I'm not sure it's truly revolutionary, sounded a lot like the first album to me.

Better than I remember. Talking heads are always an equal split for me between David Byrn's interesting singing style and out-there lyrics, and the bands awesome instrumentals. The Big Country is a HUGE highlight on this album.

Good? Maybe you just had to be there. I was 5 years old when this album arrived. I was more Team Devo. I was not really exposed to this at all. Would that have changed things? Maybe. I am happy to listen to quirky, arty, post punk, but aside from some hits (that are good but wearing thin honestly) I don't have time for Talking Heads. Only listened to the whole album for completeness. Couldn't wait for it to end. If I wasn't taking notes I would have turned it off. I'm glad it's over now.

Very good new wave album by Talking Heads, the first produced by Brian Eno. I like the tight playing, great bass lines. However, it is not as great as other albums by them, not that memorable. Maybe I'm too strict here that I compare it those albums, so I'm giving it a 3.5/5, rounded to 3 overall.

I bet this’ll be just like my previous Talking Heads album generator experiences… Firstly, I’ll note the presence of one, but only one, of their mega hits that I already know and love. Secondly, I’ll listen to the other 10 tracks and be a bit underwhelmed. Thirdly, I’ll listen again, and again, and gradually the bizarre quirks of David Byrne’s lyrics and the infectiousness of the band’s hooks will reveal themselves. Finally, while still not yet convinced the album is a masterpiece, I’ll suspect that actually it might be really rather good after all. I’ll rate it 3.5 stars, rounded up. The only difference this time is I know in advance that’s how things will play out.

Good vibes but no super memorable songs

Some really unique stuff here. Talking Heads is one of my favorite bands so any album by them will be ranked highly, even if David Byrne does go on nonsensical tangents pretty often in this one. The biggest song “Take me to the river” is not my favorite off the album and I actually enjoy pretty much every other song more. 8/10

Not especially memorable, but decent enough. I like it less than a couple of their other albums, but not by much. Sounds ahead of its time in a way - a clear influence on a huge number of 80s bands and artists.

So far, 2 tracks in, I am ???? about this album. The Good Thing has got me bobbing my head. Same with Warning Sign, and I love the walking bass! I liked it better before the vocals came in tho Same with The Girl Wants to be with the Girls - I like the instrumentals but not the vocals Ditto for Found A Job. I really like the guitar and bass on this one. This is probably my fave song on the album so far, although it is dragging on a bit. I like Artists Only! It’s got a good beat! I like the opening of I’m Not in Love. New fave of the album so far! I really enjoy the chorus too. I like the instrumentation on Stay Hungry I like Take Me to the River! The Big Country is fine, I don’t love it or hate it. This album wasn’t really my thing, but it was alright

So many times you find really talented musicians who refuse to be weird or really weird people who refuse to be talented. These guys are the very small overlapping section of the Venn Diagram. This is my second Talking Heads album and I can definitively say they are committed to the bit of making you feel slightly uncomfortable while listening. I can't tell if they fall into the Devo camp of actively trying to satirize the music industry or if this is really just the deranged musings of mad men - either way I'm a big fan.

Day 22 of listening to 1001 albums one day at a time. This absolute the wildest album I have ever listened to. I don’t think I understand this album and I don’t think I am suppose to. However it is truly great to listen to. I had to couple of talking heads popular songs but listening to one of their albums helps me understand why they are such legends. It’s so offbeat but so much fun as well. I’ve never been more confused and excited by album I am not sure if I can truly express why I like this album. It just sounds good but also really weird. Angular, punchy, stacatto dancy stuff all backed by the distinct tones of David Byrne. Solid stuff that I thought I would have heard more about in the DFA driven 00s. I liked it, didn't love it. You could do some good re-edits though.

The take me to the river cover is a banger. The rest of the album is typical talking heads, I like the vibe but I kind of find myself passively listening or thinking of other stuff

4.4 Early talking heads does it for me a bit more than later albums

“The Good Thing” is a really solid song but outside of that the album feels choppy with odd and unfinished production. The album wasn’t my cup of tea.

Starts off really strong with a driving guitar and drum riff! To be honest, David Byrne's vocals have never been my favorite, reading instead as very gimmicky to me. But the instrumentation is strong. Take Me To The River is the best song on the album.

I've been getting really into Post Punk, Dance Punk and specifically LCD Soundsystem. The opening song to this album seems like clear inspiration for LCD Soundsystem. I grew up listening to Talking Heads because my parents were big new wave/post punk/synth pop fans but I've never listened to this album. I'm really happy to give this one a go. One of my main complaints about this record is that there are a handful of songs that could have been cut. It doesn't need to be an hour long.

What a blast. So weird and fun. I love how the bass lines kind of drives the music forward. The guitar riffs are unorthodox and almost funk, but never fully committing to the bit. Which I think is imperative for their sound. They synths keep it all around interesting. Not sure if this is my favorite Talking Heads record. Despite being such a unique record, there aren't too many songs that stand out to me. I kind of like them all equally, which is probably why this album deserves more listens. I'm certain there is something I'm missing. Something that is undeniable, is how tight this record is. Everything is really well produced and immaculately put together. Its like they were harnessing their silliness into a serious art form with this record. I had a blast with this one. I'm hoping we get some more Talking Heads down the road!

Dave is weird. There was nothing like this in the 70s, that gets you on the 1001 list. There’s still nothing quite like this 45 years later, that also gets you on the 1001 list. Album has a great 3fer finish. And they just get better, way better as time goes by and they mature. Ya either like em or ya don’t. I like em a lot (3.1*s)

I like the end of this album better than the beginning but it's decent all the way through. Not their best but they play up the funkiness and weirdness here and it works. Seems to be a lot of Talking Heads in the list but I'm not complaining. You either like their quirkiness or hate them. The forward momentum on this album worked for me, very fun. 3.5

I love Talking Heads but this isn't their strongest album. I'm a little surprised to see it make the list. It's not a bad album, just not something that needs be highlighted in 1001 when the rest of their work is better in my opinion. I still a good album with more unique funky Talking Heads sounds. There's a couple good songs but not much I would consider as classics. Take Me To The River is a good song but has never been my favorite Talking Heads single. Still glad to give it a listen. 3.59 stars

Solid Talking Heads

This is the second time I've listened to this Talking Heads album, and it's grown on me. I don't think it's a masterpiece, but I do think that it has some great songs that have had a lasting influence. Songs like "The Big Country" just feel more grounded than some of the other Talking Heads songs as well. I fully don't feel like I've had time to appreciate this album - there's a lot going on. It's a great, fun quirky adventure. 3 1/2 stars for me, will round up to 4 in this case.

Here we are again. I love the Talking Heads. Go back and look at my reviews for “Fear of Music” (the very first album I got handed in this project) and “Remain in Light” (my favorite Heads album) if you want more on that. As for this album, for me it falls between the prior two I’ve listened to so far. While still indulgent and at times feeling different for the sake of it, the band (or perhaps just David Byrne) had yet to become fully convinced of his own excellence and was still just a fun, quirky band. There are flashes of their signature weirdness (the whole thing is littered with it, but I’m talking about previews of “Fear of Music” weirdness) in “Warning Sign,” “Found a Job,” and “I’m Not in Love.” Mostly, it works. What it adds up to is a pretty great midway point in terms of evolution and style between their debut “Talking Heads 77” and the aforementioned “Fear of Music.” People love to focus on David Byrne when it comes to the Talking Heads, which is obviously understandable. The rest of the band, as it was at this time (before they expanded their sound with additional musicians both in studio and on stage), is incredibly solid. Chris Frantz, while not performing any crazy complicated drum parts, presents as the band’s equivalent to Ringo Starr in that his drumming is rarely anything that presents as technically complicated but always fits the song perfectly. Meg White is another comp for him in this way. Jerry Harrison is a quiet but ever present genius on these songs, providing the guitar sound that defines the album. But most of all, the true star of the rhythm section of this band is and always has been Tina Weymouth on bass. Her bass lines are simply genius. They’re melodic while also holding down the groove and keeping the feeling alive. There was at least one song where it really felt like the bass line was written first and the rest of the song followed. I’m sure it happened more than once. History doesn’t always remember bass players, but it should absolutely remember her. I wrote a lot about this. It isn’t even my favorite Heads album. It isn’t even my second favorite Heads album (“Little Creatures,” probably). But it’s damn good and it gets 4 stars. ‘Warning sign, warning sign…’. Talking Heads second LP is up there as one of their early best. A great follow up to Talking Heads 77 and coming before the classic ‘Fear of Music’, ‘More Songs’ is joyous, inventive and brimming with great tunes.

Enjoyable, distinctive sound. Take Me To The River is one of those songs that feels like it rolls along, with a little build-up suppressed energy. I like that vibe; feels like the song is about to get away from the band but they hold it back (barely). There's a freshness to the album's sound somehow, possibly due to Byrne's vocal style. He often sounds like he's experimenting, riffing on the fly, seeing what happens when he changes his breath and resonance.

I've quite enjoyed this. I've always always had a bit of a chip on my shoulder against Talking Heads. Something about the voice. It's grumped me in the past. But this time, this listen, the first, the second and the third, it's all been satisfying and enjoyable. Lyrically interesting. Musically interesting. Finally, vocally is a bit of a key down, but it is what David Byrne is, so I enjoyed him too, after a bit. 4 stars. Ahead of the pack.

it's nice but it doesn't hit the same way 77 does (fair enough though, after a hit debut album the follow up is quite tough). the ending is great, however, good closing choice

Well, I learned something new today. Reading the band’s bio page on my music app. They said this album was “Art Pop”. Yep, I hear it. I would really just call it a lot of fun. This album carried a lot of sounds of the 1980s music that I grew up loving. I know, this album was released in 1978, but they were obviously honing the sound that would carry them through the next decade. Big fan of this!

Some songs are pretty good but other songs are pretty annoying so I'm gonna set it at the middle

The best album by a head based band.

"More Songs About Buildings And Food" contains a couple of classic Talking Heads tunes ("Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" and "Take Me to the River"). Altogether, the album isn't bad; it's just not their best effort.

"Artists Only" is so weird and great, but "Take Me to the River" makes me think of those dumb JibJab videos from the early 2000s about those dumb singing trout on the wall.

Love it. As a T heads fan there are only a few albums I wouldnt consider stone cold classics. But this album has so many great songs and was a.strong follow-up to 77. (I dont think the live album,The name of this band is Talking Heads, is on this list but I love the live versions of the songs from this album on there.)

Ah, good old talking heads. The first half is alright, but the second half is KILLER man. Pretty good album, but it’s not the best Talking Heads album.

Solid album, definitely earlier work for them. Take Me to The River is a Banger but the rest of the album was a little forgettable and felt like a trail run for their albums to come. Might not come back to this album specifically but I will keep listening to the talking heads

Such a fun album. I wanted to dance the entire time I was walking. The bass player sure knows how to write a catchy bass line. Love David burns energy. You can tell they find their sound on this album but don't quite have it refined yet.

Lots of fun. Nods to Motown and R&B throughout. Best thing I've listened to on here so far.

Still love Talking Heads. But what I’ve discovered is that I adore individual songs and not entire albums. At least not yet. There are a bunch of individual tracks that are great. But as a whole it’s just good. But my epic playlist with all my favorite Talking Heads songs flows better. 4/5

Not a big fan of Talking Heads. I like one song from this album

The Big Country reminds me of planning school lol, I like it. Take me to the River has a catchiness to it; no wonder it has by far the most listens on the album.

Talking Heads are so often touted as one of the "classics" - to be revered, reviewed, and NOT reviled. Everyone loves the Talking Heads, right? Not this guy. David Byrne's vocal is rightly criticised by many listeners, because it just sounds plain bad. Almost to the point that it sounds like he's trying to sabotage the other instruments' sound (which is otherwise pretty solid). It's often atonal, arrhythmic, slurred, and bored-yet-strained. That's just about the only criticism I have, but Byrne places himself so front-and-centre in the music that it very nearly destroys the entire album. Everything else is good, if a little samey in places. The opening track, Thank You for Sending Me an Angel, uses a simple yet satisfying chord progression and powerful guitar for a great start to the album. (Seriously. By the end of this track, I was thinking, "at this rate the album's getting 4 stars".) The next two tracks featured more varied guitar lines/licks, with some energetic drumming and bass playing. Unfortunately, the vocal gets more and more unappealing as the album progresses, and it's difficult to really groove as much as the other reviewers seem to be doing. Well it’s hard to say much, because this is my second talking heads album back to back, so my comment is pretty much the same as yesterday. Most of the tracks are mediocre, but when they make tracks that are fives, they’re solid fives.

Talking Head sounds like a stiffer Roxy Music here. I gave remain in light a four as that was a more dynamic and exciting experience. But this album doesn’t speak to me. There are no real memorable tracks here. Just a steady, stiff attempt at a groove.

I started off feeling like this didn’t have the same pizzazz as Talking Heads 77 but I started to enjoy the calmer tone by the end.

Pretty solid, take me to the river was the first song I remember of the talking heads.

Interested in listening to this album all the way through. Only truly know about a couple of their songs but I could only imagine their albums are played through for a reason. I knew one song on the whole album. Don't know too much about it

The first of the Brian Eno Trilogy Only properly heard Remain in light and 77' before but this is right up there with them in my opinion
