5/10
Good but fairly repetitive, main standout track was Take Me To The River.
Groovy feel. Reminds me of the music in some older movies I’ve seen. Not my type of music but i found myself really enjoying a couple of songs, and appreciated all of the songs.
I like it, but makes me think of emmas dad *shrug*
Instruments were wonderful and each song was really catchy. Almost ruined by an unintelligible lead vocal. Definitely can’t sing along to most of these without pulling up the lyrics. Found myself wishing it was Franz Ferdinand, instead (The band, not the assassinated archduke.)
A mixed bag. Some really nice stuff and then some fairly average.
enjoyable listen with good songs but not exceptional ones. take me to the river is catchy slightly generic
David Byrne is a brilliant frontman, but the eccentric rhythms from bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz almost single-handedly carried this album.
Pretty good album, I like talking heads, haven’t put this on for a long time! I get fed up with the remixes at the end of albums
Kind of repetitive.
Some catchy songs, some forgettable ones. Definitely that "Talking Heads" sound--punchy, half-singing, etc. No need for a repeat listen.
I thought it was pretty good while I was listening to it, but I've already forgotten it.
decent listen
I like the Talking Heads, but this isn't my favorite of their music
Weird but enjoyable. Entire album was worth it for Take Me to the River
Ok
Not exactly my cup of tea...
Not really my style
Oh god the vocals... it's like a fever dream. I like the instrumentals though.
Classic talking heads sound with a few influences from other genres. A few gems mid album
Initial reaction is I like the energy and sound of this band, never heard of them before.
I mean its alright
Saved the song stay hungry. Found this unique. 3.9
Inte Talking Head's bästa, men bra ändå
Another band that I'm not as familiar with as I should be. Very quirky new wave art pop stuff. Even some funky tunes in there. Byrne is a cartoon character (in a good way). Has their cover of "Take Me to The River", which I've heard a bunch.
Wish I could do half stars as this was a solid 3.5. Struggled mainly with the vocals.
Art school nerds make excellent records full of surprises. Good stuff.
The musicianship is so good. I really like it musically, but I am not a fan of the singer at all. Top Tracks: 1) The Big Country 2) Take Me To The River 3) Thank You For Sending Me an Angel 4) Stay Hungry
Did not love it, didn't hate it. probably just not my style
Voice kind of got annoying. Not bad overall though.
I kinda like it
It's okay - pretty sure I've heard better Talking Heads albums.
There’s a child-like simplicity to this album. It sounds like a band that is willing to explore and play around which makes it an interesting listen. Take Me to the River is a stand out.
Pretty good album about buildings and food…liked the songs but all kind of sounded same to me.
Thank You for Sending Me an Angel - 7/10 With Our Love - 7/10 The Good Thing - 7/10 Warning Sign - 6.5/10 The Girls Want to Be with the Girls - 7.5/10 Found a Job - 8/10 Artists Only - 7.5/10 I'm Not in Love - 7/10 Stay Hungry - 7/10 Take Me to the River - 7.5/10 The Big Country - 8/10 TOTAL - 80/110
AJ: just give me stop making sense.
Talking Heads is groovy as f*ck! I love the music and the diversity of sound on the album. However, David Byrns' voice is weaker than normal on this album. It doesn't help the the mix has the intraments drowning out his voice. And, the lyrics are clearly poems that they put music to, rather than songs written with a melody in mind. Later albums were much better.
I little bit plodding compared to future releases. Mid.
5/10 I'm a talking heads fan overall but this album is, for lack of a better term, mid. Not something I've revisited too often.
Þægileg plata classic heads Veist eigilega ekki hvenær það skiptir um lag
It's alright. Good rhythm and lyrics are okay.
I liked this better than the debut. It has the same flaws to less extent. Repetitive, annoying singing. Favorite song: Warning sign
upbeat. fun. quirky. everything you would love about a talking heads album.
Influential.
Alright! Some talking heads! They will always remind me of American Psycho. Read the novel and it mentions them in there. I think they're also on the movie. Listening to this while talking to Kimberly, so a little distracted, because I just fucking love her. I think she may have put a love spell on me LOL But it's been good background noise. Such a unique voice and style. Hard not to recognize them.
Nothing crazy here, decent album.
Instantly recognisable, but clearly an early work, before David Byrne figured out how to write catchy hooks. Not their best by a long way.
Both their best stuff
Track 1 - P good Track 2 - P. Good Track 3 - Good Track 4 - P. Good Track 5 - Okay - Nice transition into 6 though Track 6 - Okay - Overstays its welcome a bit tbh Track 7 - Good Track 8 - Good Track 9 - P. good Track 10 - Very good Track 11 - Pretty good
Fun, decent. Somewhat catchy. Does NOT belong on this list.
Before they were dominated by Afro beat The TH had their second album full of jangling guitars and a thumping bass, full of more Byrne weirdness, which I can only take for so long, whatever my opinion on the lead singer is, this band is extremely tight and play with a lot genres in a really cool way. I probably would only return to a few songs though
headbopper for sure, but admittedly the vocals could get a bit annoying at points, not my type of music to begin with and i considered a 4 which is high praise
opening very promising, fun, goofy etc however the album as a whole felt somewhat dissapointing as it was rather samey throughout with nothing to blow me away. opinion would probably change with a relisten tbh.
I've heard a couple songs from this album, I generally liked those. My assumption was that this album and artist would be eclectic and weird and possibly unapproachable. However, though I have only heard a couple of these songs, they all sound strangely familiar. I get the impression that this artist, and this album in particular, likely influenced many bands I have heard.
Enjoyable bc of talking heads but didnt really stand out too much.
Very good! Music composition is incredible. It gets a bit samey though.
It's pretty solid. Not full of Talking Heads classics (the only song from this album I was actually familiar with was Take Me to the River), but it's undeniable how cutting edge this stuff was for 1978. 3.5/5
Eh
Good album. Never would have listened if not for this site.
was ok
Pretty alright. Not sure why it's on here though. I liked Remain In Light better than this.
I want to like this more than I did. It's catchy, but there isn't anything here for me to really fall in love with. I like other Talking Heads records better.
just a fine album
I like the general concept of the Talking Heads but the albums and songs do all seem to blend into one. The kind of band where a greatest hits album is probably enough
I LOVE the arrangements and instrumentation. Love the lyrics. Cannot get into the lead singer's vocals at ALL.
Pretty much everything I said about Fear of Music. Good Stuff. Occasionally Great stuff. Some Heads were indeed talking.
junabuffi...mietin että nelosta laitetaan, eli laitetaan kolmosta heh..no on objective on objektive... puolet biiseistä vähän indiepoppiesque paskaa... uusi aalto...new wave. vitun hullu pilvi tuolla take me to the river
3.5
Love this band, but there are better Talking Heads albums. Take Me to the River is amazing.
The 4th and final Talking Heads album. I've said before I just don't care for this band. The music is fine but it just doesn't speak to me. Maybe in another decade I'll figure them out but till then, they have a few songs I like and the rest completely meh.
This falls just shy of a 4 for me. I’m just never really in the mood for talking heads. The Big Country was my favorite.
A very good but not great album. Possibly the weakest in their outstanding discography. No doubt other bands wish they could have made this but it doesn’t come close to their best work.
Hit(s) and misses. Average listening album with some good tracks and some fillers. Best song on this - Take Me To The River.
wow. this band is so mid i dont even know what to do. songs that feel like they arent finished and are trying so hard to end. are they there yet? miiiiiddddd.
leuk
Je connaissais juste la chanson Psycho killer, mais elle est même pas dans cet album. J'aime bien le vibe et le rythme de cet album et du groupe. On est plus dans le 3.5 sauf qu'il faut faire des choix dans la vie.
Getting better, the sound is in place but the songs are still a bit off. Take Me To The River is the definitive version. Stingy 3*
Musically solid. Vocals are perfectly suited to some tracks but I would love to hear someone else sing on most of these tracks.
2.5
didn't like the vocals but the instrumentation was pretty good. I really wasn't a fan but I can see myself listening to it once in a while. 7.5/10; 3/5
Talking Heads are nice.
DNF.
Disjointed and lacking emotion. Interesting prog/math rock sound on Stay Hungry.
the first half is very forgettable but the later songs are pretty solid take me to the river is on this album 3.5
Really like the instrumentals, bit of The Police together with Doe Maar vibes. Generally fun album, don’t really know about the vocals, though. I’m not in love, really strong start, but the talksinging is not my favorite
Like I said last time, kind of a weird genre of music I can't quite put my finger on, can't quite love, but enjoy and respect their talent.
Fun, weird, brilliant. I knew it would be. It’s not one I’ll go back to though. David Byrne’s voice has always grated on me
Pretty Solid record. Nothing great stands out, but overall fairly consistent and doesn’t end up becoming boring. Favourite track: I’m Not In Love. 7/10
Enjoyed it. I knew their name beforehand. Not expected that much, but got surprised.
Hmm I like Byrne but he’s got a lot of fluff around and this album is just that.
This was weird, because I was just listening to the previous album from the generator and at the end, I decided to listen to “Air” and “Burning Down The House”. I wrote the review for the other album and then generated the new one. As for this album, it was alright. It’s my second Talking Heads album (after Remain In Light) and I did not really get it. I’m not sure what the issue is.
Not there best by far but had a few great songs on it (Take me to the river). Kind of uneven.
по первому прослушиванию не зашло, но сейчас в принципе неплохо. есть несколько крутых тречков: big country, found job, take me to the river, with our love
some funky disco guitar bits fav song is definitely warning signs very energetic can't understand what the guy is saying at all lmao
3.5
3.5
Meh, it was fine, nothing more than that. Not sure I would listen to it again...
Good, needs a relisten with full headphones
frantic pace but never feels rushed. there’s no super standout sections but overall is solid throughout. Feel like the vocals match the tone of the instrumentation more rather than contrast which can make the album feel a bit more homogenous. Best tracks: take me to the river, the big country, the girls want to be with the girls
Apparently, "Talking Heads" is really not the best band for me. I liked this album, but not enough to remember tomorrow.
So, I was kind of looking forward to a Talking Heads album as I know they are highly regarded by many, many people. I come out of it no further forward with them than I already was. It’s almost instantly forgettable music. Generic spiky guitars, basic musicality that I could appreciate and nothing special to tickle me nipples. I’ll give it a three, as I expect it’s the kind of music that isn’t good but isn’t bad. Definition of average I suppose. Never mind.
The Talking Heads second studio album finds them still refining and searching for their style.
Interesting
New wave is just not for me. I found this album hard to sit through from The Good Thing to Artists Only. That series of songs was extremely boring to me. I like only one song in that 5 track stretch which is bad for an 11 song album. It did pick up after that because I'm Not in Love, Stay Hungry and Take Me to the River were all good songs. Take Me to the River is a solid cover of Al Green's classic but it is nowhere near the original. I personally feel as if I am unlikely to come back to this album or half the songs on it. Still a solid album but it is just not for me.
entretenidisimo por momentos suena a country muy lindo
Somewhat familiar with this band, but not this album. Lots of great grooves here. Rhythm section is solid through the entire album. The songs themselves aren’t grabbing me all that much though. Standouts: Thank You For Sending Me An Angel, Artists Only, I’m Not In Love 3.25
It was alright.
This was not my favorite talking heads album. It was OK.
Alltaf gaman að hlusta á Talking Heads. Skemmtilega hrátt og ögrandi.
Quite a few decent tracks, but lots of filler too
Groovy quirky fuckers.
Jerky post punk, muso stylings. Good, but not as great as everyone makes out. Best Tracks: Thank You for Sending Me an Angel; Found a Job; Take Me To The River
This is good but it didn't really excite me in any way. I liked the Al Green cover, for sure.
I may benefit from narrated guidance ... as to WHY an album in included. I listened to it like novice. And while I appreciated the guitar noodling and changes of styles it left me cold... UNTIL the lyrical and rhythmic slow * TAKE ME TO THE RIVER * - which got me. So alive and playful like a new language after the tinny stuff before it... Is this track and stylistic transition why the album was selected ? It's the sound I associate with talking heads, so maybe this is their breakthrough or experimental album from which this big new sound emerged? Curious now. 3/5 as an album for me.
Sound like out takes that didn’t make 1977. Still good but not the 5* of its predecessor or their later albums. Cover art 5/5. Imagine this tiled on your wall
Fun album, not my fav Talking Heads album but i enjoy it
okej
New wave. Ni fu ni fa.
Good album as they started to push in a slightly new direction. My favorite album of theirs is Speaking in Tongues.
I do really like Talking Heads, don’t I? This was my mantra as I was listening to this album. I usually love them and remember being blown away by Psycho Killer back in 1977. Plus I could name a lot of songs that if you played them for me I would relish. The guitars and drums on this were fantastic, but I kept finding David Byrne’s voice really tiresome. I would’ve been happy with a ‘Best of’ album, but I didn’t like the whole package. Which is a shame because: I do really like Talking Heads, don’t I?
I've always been hit or miss with the Talking Heads. I never listened to this entire album in a single sitting. It sits between 3 and 4 for me. I love Tina's bass playing. She's basic with a nice groove. I'll listen to the album again and probably bump up my appreciation but we'll hang on 3 stars because I only had a couple aha moments. Most notably is the frettless sounding (mostly chorus effect) bass line on "Artists Only". I liked the drum and bass groove on "Warning Sign" even though very basic. Beyond that "Take Me The River" and "Big Country" were the only songs I'd been previously introduced and memorable.
I remain ambivalent about the Talking Heads. I know their hits and don’t dislike them. I have never owned any of their albums and haven’t felt like I missed anything. The music grew on me. By the time ‘Artists Only’ played I think I had Stockholm Syndrome. But a little David Byrne goes a long way.
I was never into these guys (aside from some of their hits) and this album is kind of Exhibit A, and I'm not exactly sure why. On paper, they should be right up my alley, as I like this genre/period of music. All the elements that I like are there: quirkiness, polyrhythms, Eno, etc. I was hoping this listen would get me more into them, but it didn't quite happen. Things never really came together for me. Also, many of the songs sounded the same, so it was getting a bit much. Finally, this album struck me as the kind of thing '70s NYC literati would swoon over, which bothered me for some reason. I did, however, love their Al Green cover, and I adored that last song. That slide guitar was *chef's kiss. Dre turned me onto Remain in Light many years ago, and that one I do like.
a few good songs on it.
Vocals seemed unenthusiastic. Lacked passion
11-41 very good instrumental use, however not fond of the vocals right now. Nothin really caught my eye either
Good bass lines by David Byrne’s voice is very nasally
I somehow always forget how strange the Talking Heads can be
Average. Nothing special, just an alright album
The album was good overall, as in there were no songs that I can flat out say I did not like. However, there were not very many songs that I actually liked enough to SAY that I liked them (and add them to my liked songs on Spotify). The album altogether has a strong cohesiveness, however, and I feel like I can hear sounds that may have influenced other artists/bands that I like even more, which I cannot deny made me happy while I was listening and made me WANT to like the songs I was listening to. I wonder how many times I've heard an interpolation of something that is on this album in the songs I listen to more often today. Perhaps if I was part of an older generation, this would be one of my favorite albums. I like the interesting way the singer says his words with a distinct cadence and tempo and the way some songs have cheeky vignettes thrown in. Overall, not bad, and I'm glad to have gave each song on the album at least one listen.
eno and byrne makes for such a unique sound. I love it but it also doesn't rouse any substantial feelings in my gut.
first impressions : the album art is cool and i like how straight to the point the title is, one song is called warning sign which is a coldplay song i like and one is im not in love which is like 10cc and i also like that song so i hope i like talking head's versions :D after listening : i liked it quite a bit, solid start, 70s, funky :) reminded me of lemon demon vocally favourite song(s) : the good thing, the girls want to be with the girls, i'm not in love rating : starting with a neutral rating and basing all future ratings off of how much i (dis)liked them in comparison to this i think :]
Never really enjoyed the Talking Heads. Not quite my cup of tea, but I get the hype. None of these songs were bad necessarily, but I couldn’t get into them. Was just alright. 3/5
Thank you for sending me an angel- A lively opening track, v short With our love- weird syncopated rhythms The good thing-wish this was a bit catchier tbh Warning sign- Lyrics a bit inane but still a good tune👍 The girls want to be with the girls- Lesbian anthem👍 Found a job- weird domestic scene.. advice to just make a tv show? thats easy Artists only- really like instrumental here, can take or leave lyrics👍 I’m not in love- One of the strongest choruses on this album.. possible ace anthem👍 Stay Hungry- Doesn’t do much for me Take me to the river- Pretty nondescript cover The big country- Classic Talking Heads list, just a bit dull This was middle of the road for me, as someone with a synth preference. Still 3/5
Similar sounding songs.
Take me to the river lekker nummer. Verder niet mijn favo van Talking heads maar toch wel 3,5 ster waard
More stripped down than later stuff, hangs so much on Byrnes voice. Great bass though.
Iconic band - and think some of the less popular tracks are perhaps their better songs
Didn't know a lot about Talking Heads, but they have quite a recognisable sound. A lot of tracks are catchy. Liked 'Take Me to the River' a lot. 3,5/5
Movido entretenido
Sopranos song
3 oops de va int här man ga stjärnorna 😳😳
Not a big fan
Not on Spotify
Similar level as the last talking heads album
7,5/10
Talking heads have a very unique sound, i kinda enjoy it but not something im in love with, will probably go back for a relisten.
It's cool. A little too slow for me.
I love how interesting the guitar riffs are. This album has some real gems.
Love talking heads. Some good songs here. Take me to the river obviously the best of this bunch.
3.5
New wave. Ni fu ni fa.
Standouts: Take Me To the River, I'm Not in Love, Others: Thank You For Sending Me an Angel, The Good Thing, Girls Want to be With The Girls, The Big Country Rating: 3.5
My style, but the music was good
I've never really "got" Talking Heads. David Byrne's singing just doesn't do it for me. Instrumentals are good.
My experience with Talking Heads is a few singles here and there and I haven't listened to any of their albums. It's not a big surprise it sounds very much like the Talking Heads songs I've listened to before. I quite enjoy this album and would recommend it if you've ever listened to any of their songs before and liked it. Is it a great album? No but enjoyable nonetheless
Talking Heads have a great songwriting prowess in David Byrne, but their sophomore album just doesn't reach the heights of their debut or even the album that followed this
Es más que nada el ritmo raro típico de Talking Heads. EL bajo es lo más interesante, tanto por las muchas melodías que tienen como por el sonido.
Very groovy album not what I expected.
Odd, I had their first album yesterday. I gave it a 4 as I was expecting it to live up to the hype. There’s no sense of surprise for me here though, a bit too quirky and over rated for me.
Meh.
I love the Talking Heads. This one will be fun to listen to. Tune in later. Ordinary 4/10
testinglius
Interesting albulm with many sounds.
I don't really know Talking Heads, and this doesn't really grab me to be honest. It feels like it's almost something that I'd really like, but never quite gets there. You can see that the style is a big influence on later stuff though - Modest Mouse, that kind of thing. I don't think I'll ever actively seek out a song from this album again (apart from maybe Take Me To The River), but interesting if not mind-blowing. 3/5.
I like this album. It's a very soiled output from the heads. I do happen to be a remain in light junkie though. What an end to this album. Take me to the river brings back billy bass memories. And big country is just so good. Maybe when I'm in a head type mood I'll throw this one on to mix it up a bit.
Solid listen. Not as dynamic or interesting as some other releases, but still good
Not the best but it's allright.
Meh
Good use of sound
The Talking Heads as they started to get their trademark sound down. In general it’s a fine album but lacks standout tracks
I've tried so hard to like the TH. I've never got it. I like the double live album but the studio albums never gel. Maybe is the frenetic African rhythms. I don't know anyway. Its a solid 3.
Fun and easy. Simple melodies and clean overdriven guitar. Couple of new songs favorited
I generally have no love for Texas, but have enjoyed listening to Toadies in the past. ...and 'Toadie' I learned.. that the song "I am not in love" was a Talking Heads original. Mind blown. Similar to Texas, I generally have no love for Talking Heads. The band inhabits a space my brain will not allow me to travel. That is for smart, nerdy people who talk to instruments and embrace an inner oddball to be different. The issue that I'm having isn't with the music of Talking Heads, most of that is dron-y, repetitive and semi-interesting. No, the issue I have with the Talking Heads is the constant yelping of lead singer David Byrne belting out the lyrics to his smart songs. I'm not a smart man, my head barely talks, and the world is smaller than Texas, so let's try and get along. Here are my takeaways better than Roxy Music, not as good as Devo, but just like Texas, there's something 'weird' in the middle to spark anyone's imagination.
I listened to "More Songs About Buildings And Food" back-to-back with "Fear Of Music," which we received nearly 350 albums later. I'm kind of shocked how much I enjoyed them? In spite of David Byrne's vocals? I say in spite, because they're too weird right? Or is the oddness of the vocals fitting with the rest of the off-kilter presentation? I had surmised that the Talking Heads were too avante garde for me. Too artsy. Too weird for weirdness sake. But I actually found myself pleasantly surprised. I thought I would find their hits to be their most palatable songs, but on "More Songs About Buildings And Food" "Take Me To The River" was actually my least favorite song. It didn't fit the brashness of the rest of the album. Byrne's vocals work some of the time, but most of the time they just don't get too in the way of some interesting experimentation that manages to walk the tightrope of tolerable and sometimes exciting strangeness. Nearly a 4. I put this one slightly above "Fear of Music."
I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. It’s got energy. It’s fun. It’s dance worthy. It’s another feather in the Brian-Eno-is-a-genius cap. Eno produced the album and had the band crank up the tempo as compared to Talking Heads: 77. My favorite part is the bass and rhythm guitars as demonstrated in The Good Thing and I’m Not In Love.
This album is best when it is groovy but somewhat unconventional. When it is not somewhat unconventional, it is simply groovy. How quaint.
It's one of those bands I feel like I should like more than I actually do. About a third of the songs did anything for me. The rest of it at least was not a chore to get through. Take Me to the River was probably my favorite
Not my style.
Take Me To The River is my very least favorite Talking Heads song, so this is probably my least favorite Talking Heads album. That being said, this is fine. For some other bands, this would be amazing. For Talking Heads, this is fine and I would let it play. It's got all the sounds and some of the moves of the best of TH, but there's a spark that just isn't here, and I think that's exemplified in Take Me To The River. Anyway, 3 stars.
Like most of the albums on this list, there is no doubt an optimum time of day and an ideal place they can be best appreciated. Maybe 7am with a cup of tea was not the best way to listen to Mr Byrne.
Extremely Rhythmic and dance focused, down by the river is fire. Some deep cuts as well but was still below other Heads stuff. Still made me want to see the album tour and what David could live
Rhythm section jams through the whole album - kept me listening enough times to try to figure out what David Byrne is singing Lyrics are very poetic in a punk kinda way - Thematically it's much more abstract than the title implies Take Me to the River is a banger Vibe is very \"Holiday Club at 1 in the morning\"
Enjoyed this album as it was easy to listen to and the energy of the first few songs drew me in l. Nothing spectacular though
Not bad at all. Has some really interesting songs sprinkled around. There are a few bad ones too. Honestly when he gets too crazy with his voice im not a fan, I think he sounds much better just normally singing. A little interesting but also meh 5/10
A really nice rhythm section mixed with playful vocals make for an enjoyable listen. Whole things has a “quirky” stank on it, not in a bad way.
It's one of those bands I feel like I should like more than I actually do. About a third of the songs did anything for me. The rest of it at least was not a chore to get through. Take Me to the River was probably my favorite
Felt repetitive, didn’t get the chance to listen it through
Talking heads are alright.
My only problem with this album is the singers voice, I HATE it The instrumentals on certain tracks like "Stay Hungry are really fun to listen to I dont have a ton of negative things to say about this album 6/10
Yeah aight innit
I really wanted to like the Talking Heads, but this album only has a few good songs in my opinion. In some of the more iconic Talking Heads songs, eg. Psycho Killer, David Byrne's voice is somehow charming and catchy. On many of these songs, especially Found a Job, he comes off grating and obnoxious. It's clear on this album that the Talking Heads hadn't completely refined their sound yet. This may be my headphones or the mix's fault, but there are multiple times where you can barely hear the lyrics as well. Their cover of Take Me to the River has coherent lyrics, and is by far the best song on this album. Best Songs: Take Me to the River, The Big Country, Thank You for Sending Me an Angel Worst Songs: Found a Job, Artists Only, With Our Love
Sad the album tracks weren't called 'macaroni cheese' and 'Kettering town hall'
Too chaotic
This is American rock band Talking Heads' second album. It started a trend for the band, in which their music began moving toward a danceable style, achieved by cleaning up the rhythm section's energy. This album propelled Talking Heads into the mainstream - in part due to its only single "Take Me to the River" which was a cover of the famous song by Al Green. This funky art rock album was fun to listen to, and I'm glad I got to hear some of Talking Heads' earlier work.
Amazeballs
The music was really enjoyable quirky funk but the singing was an acquired taste (being generous). 2.5
It's alright, some good songs, but nothing stands out as a 'must listen'. 2.5
Great!
I appreciated that album. Might not go back, but I liked it
what do you mean ?
Pas dingue à part Take Me to the River
Definite Talking Heads sound but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous one. 3*
It was OK. Think it was better than the previous one.
If you planted this album, cared for and watered it for about 15 years, it'd turn into an REM album. It's obvious where those guys got their influence. This isn't as good as some Talking Heads work, but still a good listen. It's interesting to see the evolution of the band's sound.
Been kind of a closet fan for some time. Never owned an album. These guy write funky cool songs. I dig them. Not so much this album, but in general.
is it rude to say that this album consists of a bunch of pretty good starting points and riffs but it only in a couple of places coheres into greatness
Not convinced by this. Had it's moments but ultimately a bit meh.
I really want to like these guys- alway have, but there's nothing in here to snag my engagement. I mean it's intelligent and quirky but there's something missing and I'm not quite sure what. ......later. It gets better listening to it again but still not outstanding. Maybe repeated listens does the trick?
Great opener - I really like the pace and the harmonized musical stylings on Thank You for Sending Me an Angel. It shows some real talent. With Our Love tried to do the same, with not quite as good effect. And I guess the whole album has that feel - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I found myself a bit bored from tracks 3-5, whereas Found a Job better captured that energy from the first (and second, sort of) tracks. And then it sort of went back and forth between cool sound and boring. I liked I'm Not In Love, Stay Hungry, and Take Me to the River is a really solid remake (the only track I knew coming in). The other two tracks on side two I found boring. I waffled between a 3 and a 4; probably a 3.5 and I'm rounding down. Just didn't captivate me like their first album.
Third Talking Heads album in my first 250. OK it's not my list - so here we go. I...like it? It's actually a bit more accessible to me than their previous albums I've reviewed. At the same time nothing is jumping at me in the "holy crap i need to hear this over and over" realm. I do like "Artists Only" - odd, and a really cool bass sound; I will also note that "Take Me To The River" is such a great cover - they really made it their own and honestly I like it as much as the original. I enjoy the overall mix/sound of this album too. Talking Heads were a good band I definitely underrated back in the day and even though I don't know if I'd frequently put them on, I would never object to listening to an album of theirs. That screams 3 stars to me... 6/10 3 stars.
This was lesser talking heads in my opinion. Still not bad but not as fun as stuff like stop making sense. Take me to the river is still good tho
Not as immediate or charming as their other work, meaning it ends up in standard twee territory and lacks some of the eclectic energy that makes a Talking Heads LP stand out. Bonus star for the pure nostalgia of 'Take Me to The River' - my great uncle had an animatronic mounted fish that flopped around and sang this song, and I was ultimately banned from using it because I loved hearing it sing so much.
This is pre-80s Talking Heads and you can hear the difference in their later tracks. For what it is however I quite enjoyed it!
A great example of how making good music makes no sense. Besides his... unique... vocal delivery, there's so many nonconventional choices. Why is there a choir in the Good Thing?! Why is the chorus just the same melodic line repeated like 6x? It seems amateurish, if bold. But there's obviously a plan. And usually it doesn't work (The Mothers of Invention, IMO) and sometimes it works. The bassist is so tasteful. Never a star, and she could show off a bit more, but not at all boring.
A great album that has plenty of funk and tight arrangements. Talking Heads were often over analysed with plenty of post modern bollocks written about them. I think they were just a fantastic little dance band. I prefer the Talking Heads version of Take Me To the River over the original. Controversial.
As usual with TH I love the rhythmic, layered guitars and funky bass lines. Songs are usually interesting too, but I can't get on with DB's vocals. Just find them too fraught.
I probably enjoyed this Talking Heads album most, especially the final two tracks.
Sometimes the vocals annoying but sometimes it worked
Didn’t finish the album. It was definitely a new listening experience for me. Their sound is very unique, but I don’t know if it’s my thing.
3.8 - Some good songs on here (“Take Me To the River”, “Warning Sign”) but if I’m being honest I’d say Brian Eno played an overly heavy-handed influence on the sound. To me it’s very similar to Devo’s “Are We Not Men…” that Eno produced at right around the same time. Still, it’s got lots of energy and fun dance-y beats throughout.
a 3 all the way, nothing to stand out but kind of enjoyable to nod along to
Songs 1 thru 9 very fast . Songs 10 thru 15 slowed down. I liked the second half of album. First time heard Talking Heads album.
We already have plenty of songs about buildings and food. No one asked for more. I'm guessing "Take Me To The River" is the only reason this Heads album is on the list. The world, or at least this list, would be much better if this album was replaced by "Stop Making Sense".
New wave rock
3/5 Take me to the River is classic. Didn't know the rest. It's typical good, talking Heads. Not really anything standout-ish on it though. Maybe next time around.
Not their best
not as good as remain in light
I liked the music couldn’t get past the vocals sometimes
No lo terminé pero me gustó lo que oí. Sobretodo la música por encima del songwriting. Buenos temas
I hadn't heard of talking heads (!!) until I was recently introduced to them in the last couple of years. Now I am a fan and I really appreciate their unique style, their live performances, the influence of Eno, the videos, all of it. This album just isn't quite hitting it for me and I can't put my finger upon whyyy. It's not exactly singing/crying out to me and making say YESS. It just falls slightly flat for some reason, maybe at this point they were honing something magical but not quite there yet for me. UPDATE Take me to the River is a banger what a genius idea to do a version. My faith is restored and I'm reminded of how clever they are.

Sonido Talking Heads pero sin ningún éxito o canción que me haya deslumbrado. Para mi gusto tienen discos mejores.
Interesting, sounded kinda generic.
The best of this album IMO: - Take Me to the River This is my second Talking Heads album. I can't say that I'm a fan. It's was just "okay." Take Me to the River is a jam though. 2.7/5
Buen albúm. Se pasa el tiempo rápido cuando lo escuchas
Solid album. First time listening to talking heads Artists only is best song
In their peculiar style
LoVe hOW dAvId bYRne sInGS!
I wanna hear the original Songs About Buildings And Food
Main vocals are all over the place which makes it exciting to listen to; the keys? i'm unsure which instrument gives this a distinct sound. I really like The Good Thing
this feels like one of those albums that i'll listen to again later with context and it'll be a 4-5 stars
I'm never rushing to put on a Talking Heads album, but I'm never unhappy to stumble across one.
Typical Talking Heads, but I think I like it less than Fear of Music. Overall they are super innovating for their time and always a solid listen. 3.5/5
Just not a fan of Talking Heads. Take Me To The River is a massive tube though.
Complex, funky, funny and endlessly entertaining.
Again...feel a bit meh about this one. Like it better than The Doors, don't like it as much as the Smiths or the Ramones. It's the gloomy rebel in me, I guess. Fave track: The Good Thing
I like the Talking Heads. They're interesting without being too weird. David Byrne vocals sound like he's recording them from a padded room - in a good way. Also - it was interesting to see that Brian Eno (who's album I just listened to and hated) was a studio musician on this album. I'm close to a 4 on this one, but not quite there.
Songs... is a classic example of 2nd album syndrome. It's easily forgettable even for Talking Heads fans, stuck in between '77 and Remain in Light. It's all relative, but this might well be the last Talking Heads album you need to care about; you're never going to start your TH journey here. It's important in the discography because it's the first collaboration with Brian Eno, and establishes the world-funk style that is at the heart of all the brilliance that came from the band after. But it was definitely all after. Listening again, I think the letdown is the songwriting on this album, largely forgettable. Consider that the only real standout track with lasting flavor is a cover tune, Take Me to the River. But again, it's relative and the worst Talking Heads album is still something miles above most of the albums in the 1001. And by the way, all credit to Eno, when are the rest of us just going to come out and admit that David Byrne hasn't written a decent song since he didn't have Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz in his corner?
Not really my speed, but musically interesting anyway.
Some classics here though on the whole I find the Talking Heads a bit grating
Pretty good album. Felt like this album flowed really well and even though it’s older, it showed qualities that set the tone for many alt indie albums. Take me to the river is a great song. 7.3/10
quite a lot of songs about buildings and food... maybe a few too many. but a lot have stood the test of time
I'm not a real big fan of Talking Heads and this album continues to prove it. Not a fan of the style of music though I understand the appeal others may have. 6/10.
better than I thought.
I didn't hate this (which was a surprise), but every time I started getting into it, the Talking Heads guy would do some Talking Heads weird shit. The best line comes from a song called The Big Country: "I wouldn't live there if you paid me." Abilene people know. Best track: Take Me to the River
More Songs About Buildings And Food has the familiar production of producer Brian Eno. The story of how the album name came about sounds like a typical band decision. Quote from Tina Weymouth the bassist: "When we were making this album I remembered this stupid discussion we had about titles for the last album. At that time I said, 'What are we gonna call an album that's just about buildings and food?' And Chris said, 'You call it more songs about buildings and food.'" It seems that a number of artists have been influenced by the sounds of this album, in my experience, MGMT immediately comes to mind through their similar sounding Avant-pop/new-wave electro sounds. Whether that was a direct influence of the producer or Talking Heads themselves remains to be seen. Best: With Our Love Worst: The Big Country Note: Spotify had the 2005 Remastered album with bonus tracks, I only listened to the original tracks off the album.
DB's lyrics are goofy
IF you haven't listened to a talking heads album, you should. The first time I heard one I was amazed. this is the first time listening to this one and same effect.
3/5
Enjoyed "The Big Country" and "Thank you for Sending me Angel"
Mixed feelings; De helft was tof, maar de andere helft eigenlijk gewoon klote.
Was wel een lange zit en op een gegeven moment begon het me een beetje tegen te staan maar het blijft toch een bijzonder goede band.
Ok.
Easy listening, a good album
I have been enjoying the talking heads, its a band I hadn't really come across before this list. This isn't anywhere near as good as their previous one that was on the list, but it's still decent stuff
A good album by a highly interesting little band. Personally I prefer Speaking in Tongues, but this album is a good one to start to get to know them with.
Leukste nummer vind ik "The Good Thing".
Best fijn eigenlijk.
Oh its that one band i know for the song 'same as it ever was! (not actual title, just the lyrics i remember most)' good rock stuff.
A bit generic
more songs about cool rock stuff
Vast z'n tijd vooruit. Best creatief maar niet voor mij.
I am editing this non-existing review but can’t remember what the album sounded like. Says a lot I suppose.
Fine but not my thing
Some well known songs. It was a good album for the most part
Has an old style that I'm not familiar with. It was good background music while doing chores. The songs all sounded the same.
a lot of it sounds like if you mixed the clash with surf music.
Not a fan of the vocals Interesting ideas though
1. Thank You For Sending Me an Angel- energetic way to start the album. Shorter song. 2. With Our Love- another energetic song. Kinda sounds same-y. Does get better and have more variation after the chorus but that's more than halfway through the song. 3. The Good Thing- I already like the beginning of this song much better than the other 2. I really like the lyrics of this song too. The chorus in the choir is kind of off-putting to me though. 4. Warning Sign- Hmm, not my favorite. It's a little droning to me. 5. The Girls Want to be With the Girls- already my fav intro so far. The lyrics to this (and the other songs on the album) are interesting. 6. Found a Job- also more upbeat. The lyrics to this are great. Great message about not getting stuck in a rut. This is probably my favorite song so far. Also the longest song by far at this point in the album. Very creative concept! 7. Artists Only- different than the other tracks so far, starts in a minor key and is a bit more subdued. Lyrics are a little more simple. 8. I'm Not in Love- Another intro that I am liking. Not super loving the lyrics but this song makes me wanna tap my foot. 9. Stay Hungry- A little disco. Kind of trancey with the looped instruments. 10. Take Me to the River- the only song on this album that I had heard previously. Different than the rest of the songs on the album. To me this feels like the most "mainstream" song. It's actually a cover song according to Lyric Genius. This definitely has a good buildup and is just fun to vibe to. 11. The Big Country- has a nice kind of country/rock intro. Lyrics seem kind of satirical. But I also agree with them. Sound-wise not my favorite song on the album. It's a little too long. Overall, not a bad album and I can definitely understand its influence. However, I can only handle David Byrne's voice in small doses and the front half of this album all sounds the same (the back half is definitely better and more interesting). Not my favorite album ever but I appreciate it for what it is.
Somehow missed this having picked up 77 and Fear of Music on cassettes years ago. Not sure it's as good as either, although Angel, Job, Girls, Love are excellent. I hear the progression towards funky dance. Cool. Still haven't got my ears around DB's lyrics, though.
the british guy liked this band and i faked liking it, so i don't like it. in another world, maybe????
This was good. I find Talking Heads a bit too abrasive, but I'll definitely listen to this again.
Take me to the river-only one I liked
Enjoyable but nothing standout.
I'm ready to get flamed for this, but as far as TH records go this is milquetoast for me. Certainly better than their first record, but with Fear of Music, Remain in Light, and Speaking in Tongues right around the corner, this record is a victim of its successors. The Al Green cover rips though.
More Talking Heads...
Bopped about to it. Was alright. 6/10
Some great moments, some not so great moments. In other words...Milan Baros
Not heard this one before. More rock less dance than the later stuff
I'd have to relisted to it to figure out what I didn't like about it, and I don't really want to
