Pretty Solid record. Nothing great stands out, but overall fairly consistent and doesn’t end up becoming boring. Favourite track: I’m Not In Love. 7/10
Enjoyed it. I knew their name beforehand. Not expected that much, but got surprised.
Hmm I like Byrne but he’s got a lot of fluff around and this album is just that.
This was weird, because I was just listening to the previous album from the generator and at the end, I decided to listen to “Air” and “Burning Down The House”. I wrote the review for the other album and then generated the new one. As for this album, it was alright. It’s my second Talking Heads album (after Remain In Light) and I did not really get it. I’m not sure what the issue is.
Not there best by far but had a few great songs on it (Take me to the river). Kind of uneven.

Feel like the vocals match the tone of the instrumentation more rather than contrast which can make the album feel a bit more homogenous. Apparently, "Talking Heads" is really not the best band for me. I liked this album, but not enough to remember tomorrow.
So, I was kind of looking forward to a Talking Heads album as I know they are highly regarded by many, many people. I come out of it no further forward with them than I already was. It’s almost instantly forgettable music. Generic spiky guitars, basic musicality that I could appreciate and nothing special to tickle me nipples. I’ll give it a three, as I expect it’s the kind of music that isn’t good but isn’t bad. Definition of average I suppose. Never mind.
The Talking Heads second studio album finds them still refining and searching for their style.

New wave is just not for me. I found this album hard to sit through from The Good Thing to Artists Only. That series of songs was extremely boring to me. I like only one song in that 5 track stretch which is bad for an 11 song album. It did pick up after that because I'm Not in Love, Stay Hungry and Take Me to the River were all good songs. Take Me to the River is a solid cover of Al Green's classic but it is nowhere near the original. I personally feel as if I am unlikely to come back to this album or half the songs on it. Still a solid album but it is just not for me.

Somewhat familiar with this band, but not this album. Lots of great grooves here. Rhythm section is solid through the entire album. The songs themselves aren’t grabbing me all that much though. Standouts: Thank You For Sending Me An Angel, Artists Only, I’m Not In Love 3.25

This is good but it didn't really excite me in any way. I liked the Al Green cover, for sure.
I may benefit from narrated guidance ... as to WHY an album in included. I listened to it like novice. And while I appreciated the guitar noodling and changes of styles it left me cold... UNTIL the lyrical and rhythmic slow * TAKE ME TO THE RIVER * - which got me. So alive and playful like a new language after the tinny stuff before it... Is this track and stylistic transition why the album was selected ? It's the sound I associate with talking heads, so maybe this is their breakthrough or experimental album from which this big new sound emerged? Curious now. 3/5 as an album for me.
Sound like out takes that didn’t make 1977. Still good but not the 5* of its predecessor or their later albums. Cover art 5/5. Imagine this tiled on your wall

I do really like Talking Heads, don’t I? This was my mantra as I was listening to this album. I usually love them and remember being blown away by Psycho Killer back in 1977. Plus I could name a lot of songs that if you played them for me I would relish. The guitars and drums on this were fantastic, but I kept finding David Byrne’s voice really tiresome. I would’ve been happy with a ‘Best of’ album, but I didn’t like the whole package. Which is a shame because: I do really like Talking Heads, don’t I?
I've always been hit or miss with the Talking Heads. I never listened to this entire album in a single sitting. It sits between 3 and 4 for me. I love Tina's bass playing. She's basic with a nice groove. I'll listen to the album again and probably bump up my appreciation but we'll hang on 3 stars because I only had a couple aha moments. Most notably is the frettless sounding (mostly chorus effect) bass line on "Artists Only". I liked the drum and bass groove on "Warning Sign" even though very basic. Beyond that "Take Me The River" and "Big Country" were the only songs I'd been previously introduced and memorable.
I remain ambivalent about the Talking Heads. I know their hits and don’t dislike them. I have never owned any of their albums and haven’t felt like I missed anything. The music grew on me. By the time ‘Artists Only’ played I think I had Stockholm Syndrome. But a little David Byrne goes a long way.
I was never into these guys (aside from some of their hits) and this album is kind of Exhibit A, and I'm not exactly sure why. On paper, they should be right up my alley, as I like this genre/period of music. All the elements that I like are there: quirkiness, polyrhythms, Eno, etc. I was hoping this listen would get me more into them, but it didn't quite happen. Things never really came together for me. Also, many of the songs sounded the same, so it was getting a bit much. Finally, this album struck me as the kind of thing '70s NYC literati would swoon over, which bothered me for some reason. I did, however, love their Al Green cover, and I adored that last song. That slide guitar was *chef's kiss. Dre turned me onto Remain in Light many years ago, and that one I do like.

Average. Nothing special, just an alright album
The album was good overall, as in there were no songs that I can flat out say I did not like. However, there were not very many songs that I actually liked enough to SAY that I liked them (and add them to my liked songs on Spotify). The album altogether has a strong cohesiveness, however, and I feel like I can hear sounds that may have influenced other artists/bands that I like even more, which I cannot deny made me happy while I was listening and made me WANT to like the songs I was listening to. I wonder how many times I've heard an interpolation of something that is on this album in the songs I listen to more often today. Perhaps if I was part of an older generation, this would be one of my favorite albums. I like the interesting way the singer says his words with a distinct cadence and tempo and the way some songs have cheeky vignettes thrown in. Overall, not bad, and I'm glad to have gave each song on the album at least one listen.
eno and byrne makes for such a unique sound. I love it but it also doesn't rouse any substantial feelings in my gut.
first impressions : the album art is cool and i like how straight to the point the title is, one song is called warning sign which is a coldplay song i like and one is im not in love which is like 10cc and i also like that song so i hope i like talking head's versions :D after listening : i liked it quite a bit, solid start, 70s, funky :) reminded me of lemon demon vocally favourite song(s) : the good thing, the girls want to be with the girls, i'm not in love rating : starting with a neutral rating and basing all future ratings off of how much i (dis)liked them in comparison to this i think :]
Never really enjoyed the Talking Heads. Not quite my cup of tea, but I get the hype. None of these songs were bad necessarily, but I couldn’t get into them. Was just alright. 3/5

I've never really "got" Talking Heads. David Byrne's singing just doesn't do it for me. Instrumentals are good.
My experience with Talking Heads is a few singles here and there and I haven't listened to any of their albums. It's not a big surprise it sounds very much like the Talking Heads songs I've listened to before. I quite enjoy this album and would recommend it if you've ever listened to any of their songs before and liked it. Is it a great album? No but enjoyable nonetheless
Talking Heads have a great songwriting prowess in David Byrne, but their sophomore album just doesn't reach the heights of their debut or even the album that followed this

Very groovy album not what I expected.
Odd, I had their first album yesterday. I gave it a 4 as I was expecting it to live up to the hype. There’s no sense of surprise for me here though, a bit too quirky and over rated for me.

Interesting albulm with many sounds.
I don't really know Talking Heads, and this doesn't really grab me to be honest. It feels like it's almost something that I'd really like, but never quite gets there. You can see that the style is a big influence on later stuff though - Modest Mouse, that kind of thing. I don't think I'll ever actively seek out a song from this album again (apart from maybe Take Me To The River), but interesting if not mind-blowing. 3/5.
I like this album. It's a very soiled output from the heads. I do happen to be a remain in light junkie though. What an end to this album. Take me to the river brings back billy bass memories. And big country is just so good. Maybe when I'm in a head type mood I'll throw this one on to mix it up a bit.

I've tried so hard to like the TH. I've never got it. I like the double live album but the studio albums never gel. Maybe is the frenetic African rhythms. I don't know anyway. Its a solid 3.

I generally have no love for Texas, but have enjoyed listening to Toadies in the past. ...and 'Toadie' I learned.. that the song "I am not in love" was a Talking Heads original. Mind blown. Similar to Texas, I generally have no love for Talking Heads. The band inhabits a space my brain will not allow me to travel. That is for smart, nerdy people who talk to instruments and embrace an inner oddball to be different. The issue that I'm having isn't with the music of Talking Heads, most of that is dron-y, repetitive and semi-interesting. No, the issue I have with the Talking Heads is the constant yelping of lead singer David Byrne belting out the lyrics to his smart songs. I'm not a smart man, my head barely talks, and the world is smaller than Texas, so let's try and get along. Here are my takeaways better than Roxy Music, not as good as Devo, but just like Texas, there's something 'weird' in the middle to spark anyone's imagination.
I listened to "More Songs About Buildings And Food" back-to-back with "Fear Of Music," which we received nearly 350 albums later. I'm kind of shocked how much I enjoyed them? In spite of David Byrne's vocals? I say in spite, because they're too weird right? Or is the oddness of the vocals fitting with the rest of the off-kilter presentation? I had surmised that the Talking Heads were too avante garde for me. Too artsy. Too weird for weirdness sake. But I actually found myself pleasantly surprised. I thought I would find their hits to be their most palatable songs, but on "More Songs About Buildings And Food" "Take Me To The River" was actually my least favorite song. It didn't fit the brashness of the rest of the album. Byrne's vocals work some of the time, but most of the time they just don't get too in the way of some interesting experimentation that manages to walk the tightrope of tolerable and sometimes exciting strangeness. Nearly a 4. I put this one slightly above "Fear of Music."
I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. It’s got energy. It’s fun. It’s dance worthy. It’s another feather in the Brian-Eno-is-a-genius cap. Eno produced the album and had the band crank up the tempo as compared to Talking Heads: 77. My favorite part is the bass and rhythm guitars as demonstrated in The Good Thing and I’m Not In Love.
This album is best when it is groovy but somewhat unconventional. When it is not somewhat unconventional, it is simply groovy. How quaint.

Take Me To The River is my very least favorite Talking Heads song, so this is probably my least favorite Talking Heads album. That being said, this is fine. For some other bands, this would be amazing. For Talking Heads, this is fine and I would let it play. It's got all the sounds and some of the moves of the best of TH, but there's a spark that just isn't here, and I think that's exemplified in Take Me To The River. Anyway, 3 stars.
Like most of the albums on this list, there is no doubt an optimum time of day and an ideal place they can be best appreciated. Maybe 7am with a cup of tea was not the best way to listen to Mr Byrne.
Extremely Rhythmic and dance focused, down by the river is fire. Some deep cuts as well but was still below other Heads stuff. Still made me want to see the album tour and what David could live

I really wanted to like the Talking Heads, but this album only has a few good songs in my opinion. In some of the more iconic Talking Heads songs, eg. Psycho Killer, David Byrne's voice is somehow charming and catchy. On many of these songs, especially Found a Job, he comes off grating and obnoxious. It's clear on this album that the Talking Heads hadn't completely refined their sound yet. This may be my headphones or the mix's fault, but there are multiple times where you can barely hear the lyrics as well. Their cover of Take Me to the River has coherent lyrics, and is by far the best song on this album. Too chaotic
This is American rock band Talking Heads' second album. It started a trend for the band, in which their music began moving toward a danceable style, achieved by cleaning up the rhythm section's energy. This album propelled Talking Heads into the mainstream - in part due to its only single "Take Me to the River" which was a cover of the famous song by Al Green. This funky art rock album was fun to listen to, and I'm glad I got to hear some of Talking Heads' earlier work.

The music was really enjoyable quirky funk but the singing was an acquired taste (being generous). 2.5

5ème album de la journée, je me dois en effet de faire mes preuves auprès de Robert après mes deux semaines d'absence. Ce dernier m'a laissé un ultimatum, mon retard doit être comblé avant la fin de la semaine prochaine. Cela passe donc pas un lancement sans entrain de cet album des Talking Heads, que je traverserai telle une âme errante.

If you planted this album, cared for and watered it for about 15 years, it'd turn into an REM album. It's obvious where those guys got their influence. This isn't as good as some Talking Heads work, but still a good listen. It's interesting to see the evolution of the band's sound.
Been kind of a closet fan for some time. Never owned an album. These guy write funky cool songs. I dig them. Not so much this album, but in general.

Not convinced by this. Had it's moments but ultimately a bit meh.
I really want to like these guys- alway have, but there's nothing in here to snag my engagement. I mean it's intelligent and quirky but there's something missing and I'm not quite sure what. ......later. It gets better listening to it again but still not outstanding. Maybe repeated listens does the trick?
Great opener - I really like the pace and the harmonized musical stylings on Thank You for Sending Me an Angel. It shows some real talent. With Our Love tried to do the same, with not quite as good effect. And I guess the whole album has that feel - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I found myself a bit bored from tracks 3-5, whereas Found a Job better captured that energy from the first (and second, sort of) tracks. And then it sort of went back and forth between cool sound and boring. I liked I'm Not In Love, Stay Hungry, and Take Me to the River is a really solid remake (the only track I knew coming in). The other two tracks on side two I found boring. I waffled between a 3 and a 4; probably a 3.5 and I'm rounding down. Just didn't captivate me like their first album.
Third Talking Heads album in my first 250. OK it's not my list - so here we go. I...like it? It's actually a bit more accessible to me than their previous albums I've reviewed. At the same time nothing is jumping at me in the "holy crap i need to hear this over and over" realm. I do like "Artists Only" - odd, and a really cool bass sound; I will also note that "Take Me To The River" is such a great cover - they really made it their own and honestly I like it as much as the original. I enjoy the overall mix/sound of this album too. Talking Heads were a good band I definitely underrated back in the day and even though I don't know if I'd frequently put them on, I would never object to listening to an album of theirs. That screams 3 stars to me... 6/10 3 stars.

Not as immediate or charming as their other work, meaning it ends up in standard twee territory and lacks some of the eclectic energy that makes a Talking Heads LP stand out. Bonus star for the pure nostalgia of 'Take Me to The River' - my great uncle had an animatronic mounted fish that flopped around and sang this song, and I was ultimately banned from using it because I loved hearing it sing so much.
This is pre-80s Talking Heads and you can hear the difference in their later tracks. For what it is however I quite enjoyed it!
A great example of how making good music makes no sense. Besides his... unique... vocal delivery, there's so many nonconventional choices. Why is there a choir in the Good Thing?! Why is the chorus just the same melodic line repeated like 6x? It seems amateurish, if bold. But there's obviously a plan. And usually it doesn't work (The Mothers of Invention, IMO) and sometimes it works. The bassist is so tasteful. Never a star, and she could show off a bit more, but not at all boring.
A great album that has plenty of funk and tight arrangements. Talking Heads were often over analysed with plenty of post modern bollocks written about them. I think they were just a fantastic little dance band. I prefer the Talking Heads version of Take Me To the River over the original. Controversial.
As usual with TH I love the rhythmic, layered guitars and funky bass lines. Songs are usually interesting too, but I can't get on with DB's vocals. Just find them too fraught.
I probably enjoyed this Talking Heads album most, especially the final two tracks.

Didn’t finish the album. It was definitely a new listening experience for me. Their sound is very unique, but I don’t know if it’s my thing.
3.8 - Some good songs on here (“Take Me To the River”, “Warning Sign”) but if I’m being honest I’d say Brian Eno played an overly heavy-handed influence on the sound. To me it’s very similar to Devo’s “Are We Not Men…” that Eno produced at right around the same time. Still, it’s got lots of energy and fun dance-y beats throughout.

Songs 1 thru 9 very fast . Songs 10 thru 15 slowed down. I liked the second half of album. First time heard Talking Heads album.
We already have plenty of songs about buildings and food. No one asked for more. I'm guessing "Take Me To The River" is the only reason this Heads album is on the list. The world, or at least this list, would be much better if this album was replaced by "Stop Making Sense".

3/5 Take me to the River is classic. Didn't know the rest. It's typical good, talking Heads. Not really anything standout-ish on it though. Maybe next time around.

I hadn't heard of talking heads (!!) until I was recently introduced to them in the last couple of years. Now I am a fan and I really appreciate their unique style, their live performances, the influence of Eno, the videos, all of it. This album just isn't quite hitting it for me and I can't put my finger upon whyyy. It's not exactly singing/crying out to me and making say YESS. It just falls slightly flat for some reason, maybe at this point they were honing something magical but not quite there yet for me. UPDATE Take me to the River is a banger what a genius idea to do a version. My faith is restored and I'm reminded of how clever they are.

I like the Talking Heads. They're interesting without being too weird. David Byrne vocals sound like he's recording them from a padded room - in a good way. Also - it was interesting to see that Brian Eno (who's album I just listened to and hated) was a studio musician on this album. I'm close to a 4 on this one, but not quite there.
Songs... is a classic example of 2nd album syndrome. It's easily forgettable even for Talking Heads fans, stuck in between '77 and Remain in Light. It's all relative, but this might well be the last Talking Heads album you need to care about; you're never going to start your TH journey here. It's important in the discography because it's the first collaboration with Brian Eno, and establishes the world-funk style that is at the heart of all the brilliance that came from the band after. But it was definitely all after. Listening again, I think the letdown is the songwriting on this album, largely forgettable. Consider that the only real standout track with lasting flavor is a cover tune, Take Me to the River. But again, it's relative and the worst Talking Heads album is still something miles above most of the albums in the 1001. I didn't hate this (which was a surprise), but every time I started getting into it, the Talking Heads guy would do some Talking Heads weird shit. The best line comes from a song called The Big Country: "I wouldn't live there if you paid me." Abilene people know. Best track: Take Me to the River
More Songs About Buildings And Food has the familiar production of producer Brian Eno. The story of how the album name came about sounds like a typical band decision. Quote from Tina Weymouth the bassist: "When we were making this album I remembered this stupid discussion we had about titles for the last album. At that time I said, 'What are we gonna call an album that's just about buildings and food?' And Chris said, 'You call it more songs about buildings and food.'" It seems that a number of artists have been influenced by the sounds of this album, in my experience, MGMT immediately comes to mind through their similar sounding Avant-pop/new-wave electro sounds. Whether that was a direct influence of the producer or Talking Heads themselves remains to be seen. Best: With Our Love Worst: The Big Country Note: Spotify had the 2005 Remastered album with bonus tracks, I only listened to the original tracks off the album.

Easy listening, a good album
I have been enjoying the talking heads, its a band I hadn't really come across before this list. This isn't anywhere near as good as their previous one that was on the list, but it's still decent stuff
A good album by a highly interesting little band. Personally I prefer Speaking in Tongues, but this album is a good one to start to get to know them with.
Geweldig opzwepende muziek op de vroege maandagochtend. Wederom een album met heel leuke deuntjes, dus muzikaal zit het voor mij goed in elkaar. Ik krijg regelmatig het Supertramp gevoel, maar dan ook weer een beetje Blues Brothers. De stem is echter vaak schreeuwerig, een soort Engelse punkrock stem, en dat is helaas dan weer een sterretje minder. Leukste nummer vind ik "The Good Thing".
Ik wist niet dat Brian Eno onderdeel was van de Talking Heads. Ik ken hem alleen van zijn ambient werk. Voor mij is dit een niet typisch eighties album, met minder poppy lijntjes. Het zit wat ‘intelligenter’ in elkaar. Best fijn eigenlijk.

1. Thank You For Sending Me an Angel- energetic way to start the album. Shorter song. 2. With Our Love- another energetic song. Kinda sounds same-y. Does get better and have more variation after the chorus but that's more than halfway through the song. 3. The Good Thing- I already like the beginning of this song much better than the other 2. I really like the lyrics of this song too. The chorus in the choir is kind of off-putting to me though. 4. Warning Sign- Hmm, not my favorite. It's a little droning to me. 5. The Girls Want to be With the Girls- already my fav intro so far. The lyrics to this (and the other songs on the album) are interesting. 6. Found a Job- also more upbeat. The lyrics to this are great. Great message about not getting stuck in a rut. This is probably my favorite song so far. Also the longest song by far at this point in the album. Very creative concept! 7. Artists Only- different than the other tracks so far, starts in a minor key and is a bit more subdued. Lyrics are a little more simple. 8. I'm Not in Love- Another intro that I am liking. Not super loving the lyrics but this song makes me wanna tap my foot. 9. Stay Hungry- A little disco. Kind of trancey with the looped instruments. 10. Take Me to the River- the only song on this album that I had heard previously. Different than the rest of the songs on the album. To me this feels like the most "mainstream" song. It's actually a cover song according to Lyric Genius. This definitely has a good buildup and is just fun to vibe to. 11. The Big Country- has a nice kind of country/rock intro. Lyrics seem kind of satirical. But I also agree with them. Sound-wise not my favorite song on the album. It's a little too long. Overall, not a bad album and I can definitely understand its influence. However, I can only handle David Byrne's voice in small doses and the front half of this album all sounds the same (the back half is definitely better and more interesting). Not my favorite album ever but I appreciate it for what it is.

Somehow missed this having picked up 77 and Fear of Music on cassettes years ago. Not sure it's as good as either, although Angel, Job, Girls, Love are excellent. I hear the progression towards funky dance. Cool. Still haven't got my ears around DB's lyrics, though.

Enjoyable but nothing standout.
I'm ready to get flamed for this, but as far as TH records go this is milquetoast for me. Certainly better than their first record, but with Fear of Music, Remain in Light, and Speaking in Tongues right around the corner, this record is a victim of its successors. The Al Green cover rips though.

One track in and it's already better than our previous Talking Heads album. As a whole, I'm still not really into their style, they strike me as a new-wave prototype without enough excitement or energy to sound truly great. But I liked a handful of songs on here, including the weird Al Green cover. At this point, we've heard their first and second albums in order, which is a perfect way to learn about this band, but I'm still waiting for something big to justify their presence on here and in the hearts of so many people. Favorite tracks: Thank You for Sending Me an Angel, The Big Country, The Good Thing. Album art: Creative I guess, better than just a plain band photo, but it doesn't do much for me. Also they look like complete dorks. 3.5/5

First impressions are that this is leading up to "Fear of Music", which we reviewed already. Same themes/ideas but not as fleshed out to my taste. Some of the same lyrics even! Fear of music is definitely better.

It’s the Talking Heads, of course it is going to be fantastic. It was! Why though? Instrumentation, is why. This is a band, not a pop group, so there is more to listen to than just lyrics and basic rhythms
I do like Talking Heads, though this isn't my favourite album of theirs. Some good songs , and love Tina Weymouth's bass playing, but I feel like they perfected their chops on later records. Still very much worth a listen.

Eno's producer sound doesn't really click for me, even after hearing his solo output. Solid songs, the second half especially, but not nearly as strong as those on the first album. The emphasis on the rhythm section is neat, but everything on top of it is a bit sparse.
It's Talking Heads, I'll never call them a bad band, but they are not my favorite by any stretch. There are a few songs I like, mostly because I've had them shoved in my ear holes since I was a child, but they're just not a band I like all the time.
Thought it was a bit samey at the start of the album, but enjoyed it more as it went on. Wanted to like it more but probably won't return to it. 2/5

I get what people like about the Talking Heads but I just can't get past the vocals. Take Me to the River is the only song on this album that I genuinely like.
There's songs I definitely like by TH, but man it all really depends on how goofy his vocals are and on this album he dialed that goofiness up to 11 and ruined nearly all the tracks. The only reason it's not a 1/5 is cause the instrumentals are actually pretty good. 2/5

Pre Listen: Seriously? They didn't include Speaking in Tongues by the Talking Heads on this project, but they included this one?? This is one of their worse works in my opinion, I don't have a single song from it on my playlist, and I consider myself a big Talking Heads fan. Fucking baffling man. Notable Tracks: Warning Sign - Ugh I love the instrumental work on this song, that bass is fucking sick. Then David Byrne comes in and sounds like he's singing against the music, not with it. Frustrating. Stay Hungry - Least favorite song. It has this grating elementary sound to it, it's so repetitive. Byrne's vocal performance is so bland here too. Take Me to the River - Favorite of the album, and the only song that comes close to getting added to my playlist. Gets me nodding along a bit to it midway though, typically. Post Listen: This album is a culmination of every issue I have with the Talking Heads as a band, which again, suck because I really like the Talking Heads at their strongest. Repetitive melodies, David Byrne just going full-schizo on the mic, weird audio-mixing, and an overall feeling like there's something missing. Some songs go on for too long, some just lack substance overall. It's really a shame they included this album on here, if this project is suppose to be a celebration of only the best. Critically and commercially to my knowledge, both Little Creatures and Speaking In Tongues far out-performed this album, neither of which are on this project for god knows why. If you listened to this and think The Talking Heads just isn't for you, I'm begging you to listen to Speaking In Tongues. This album here is them at their most meh, I promise. 2/5

More Songs About Buildings and Food has some great moments, but overall it felt a bit mediocre to me. The album is tight and well-played, and you can hear the band's creativity and quirky style developing, but a lot of the tracks didn't leave a strong impression on first listen. I found myself much more engaged by the second half of the album—the last few songs had stronger hooks and more personality, making for a better finish than start. The production, handled by Brian Eno, gives the album a distinctive sound, and it's easy to see why it's considered an important step in Talking Heads' evolution. Even though it didn't completely click with me, I can appreciate its influence and experimentation. It's one of those albums that feels like it could grow on me with more listens, but for now I'd call it a solid, if somewhat uneven, record.

Nothing on this album really stood out to me, and Take Me to the River is my least favorite talking heads song. Overall it probably deserves another listen, but I am gonna give it some time.

If you’re not paying attention, this album is just Take Me to the River with a dozen B sides. Sadly, Al Green’s song is the only track on here with a melody. There’s a reason this band didn’t break through until Stop Making Sense.
Please stop making me listen to David Byrne? This is a great artist who I can like -- even love! -- in small doses...just not at album-length. This is "excellent," "good," "artful" rock and roll that I just don't personally enjoy/prefer. It's good, ok?!? It just gets on my nerves after awhile musically. I'm not a math-rock/art-rock enough guy for Talking Heads, I'm sorry! Please let me continue to appreciate them from afar and occasionally on the radio, 1001 Album Project!!!

There are too many Talking Heads albums on this list, this is my third one so far, and the returns are diminishing. The first two had some hits and some interesting stuff going on, but this record is nothing but deep cuts that were mostly boring. Some tracks were just straight up annoying at how similar they were to the track before it. Third straight day with an unenjoyable album, this list is making me weary. 2/5

This album is somewhat upstaged in Talking Heads' discography, mostly by what came after it (Fear of Music and Remain in Light.) This is certainly a step up from the debut, but Byrne's performance is definitely not for everyone, and I find his sing-shouting in his high register grating after a while. The band's interplay is fantastic though, especially for it being only their sophomore album; it's really the main thing that makes this album bearable for me. I also found the album cohesive to a fault, which, in this instance, means songs get very samey about 5 tracks in. Really, the opener, "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" and the singles "Take Me to the River" and "The Big Country" were the only memorable tracks on this thing because everything else just blends together. They really did improve leaps and bounds over this on the very next album(!)

I *want* to like the Talking Heads. Some of the arrangements are good enough, but I guess I can't get past Byrne's singing on most of this. That strange, hybrid talky-jerky-sing-song that only he can do is fine in small doses. I've always enjoyed their hits and a few songs on here, it works, but a whole album of it? I don't know. Notably the biggest hit and maybe the best song on this one -- "Take Me to the River" -- is the one with the least amount of this shtick. The songwriting is good, they've got something to say, and there's a certain late-70s, early-80s sound (we'll call it the "Eno-sound"...) that the Heads do well, but it just doesn't jive with me all that much. I struggle with this. Devo had a similar vibe and sound (IMHO) that always clicked with me better, maybe because they leaned into their weird side more? I'm searching and grasping at straws, but can't bring myself to do more than (2/5), in the hopes that some more exposure will soften me to the Heads. We've got three (!?) more on the list, so I'm sure I'll have some time.. I guess..
This is a new listen for me. Not really familiar with these guys. Another act that I have missed completely over the years, I guess. Yeah, I’m just not feeling this. There are parts that caught my attention. The galloping opening to the album. The band would return to this type of progression a number of times throughout. It made for some spirited music. Sometimes they would threaten a jangling guitar part only to go off in a wild direction. The vocals were a mess to me as well. Most of the early tracks seemed low and far away. Talking Heads seem like an acquired taste and at our first introduction here, I’ve not had enough time to develop that taste.
