The absolute bees knees
There were parts of it I really liked, but most of it didn't rise above average background music to me. Maybe it's because this bad has a reputation of being more artsy and weird than I thought this was.
I've tried listening to the Talking Heads several times and never enjoyed their stuff. I thought this album might be different... it was not. I just cannot get past David Byrne's jerky vocals. It's grating to me. Respect to all those who do love the Talking Heads though.
Based on the title I thought I would enjoy this more. I liked the drums the best. The singer’s voice and the genre maybe made the songs seem samesy.

This was a great listen. I knew that I really like Talking Heads and David Byrne, but I hadn't explored deep into their catalog. I enjoyed every single song on this record. Found a Job is a banger.
Great band but some of their slower songs don't work quite as well. Take Me to the River is a beautiful cover though.

Album bem repetitivo, estranho e sem muita "criatividade". Algumas vezes pareciam que estavam forçando recriar Psycho Killer (não sei se veio antes ou depois, durante o review pesquisarei). É, esse álbum veio 1 ano depois, então parece mesmo que estavam tentando recriar algo no mesmo estilo huauhahhua. Nem a música hit do álbum consegui adicionar na minha playlist... foda.
A única música que conheço dessa Talking Heads é a clássica Psycho Killer. Curioso pra conhecer mais, veremos... O álbum já começa bem animado e vai melhorando ao longo das 3 primeiras músicas. Bem tranquilo de ouvir. 3 - The Good Thing eu já curti mais, gostei da guitarrinha do início. O refrão é meio tenso, diferenciado, achei que contrasta com os versos bem alegrinhos. A 5 e 6 parecem a mesma música, elas se encaixam perfeitamente e são parecidas, aí nem parece que trocou de música. As seguintes chamaram menos a minha atenção, com exceção da 11 - The Big Country, que eu achei mó gostosinha, bem tranquila. Achei o álbum bem fácil de ouvir, as músicas são bem gostosinhas. Acho que a única coisa que faltou pra eu dar um 4 tranquilamente, foi ter algumas músicas mais marcantes, aquelas músicas principais do álbum, tipo uma Psycho Killer mesmo, se fizesse parte desse álbum. Como não dá pra dar 3,5, vou de 3 estrelas mesmo.

More Songs I Enjoy by Talking Heads
I have always liked a few songs by the Talking Heads, but there were also silly things about them that made it so I couldn't get into them. However, I've always wanted to go through their discography, and listening to this album finally has convinced me to do so. I really like this album. The songs are playful, but they are definitely artistic and full of purpose. I still imagine that once I get more into their 80's output, I will lose some of my appreciation, but I definitely will revisit this album.

Nothing catchy for me
A very solid sophomore offering from the Talking Heads here, which is often tough to pull off. You can't hear a Talking Heads song without knowing immediately it's them. The sound is unique and ahead of its time. It's hard to find fault here but overall not my favorite of from their catalogue, especially with Remain in Light being a perfect album. Standout tracks: Thank You for Sending Me an Angel, The Good Thing, Take me to the River
talking heads is weird. i find any talking heads album to be a hard listen. although i know theyre great and always grow up on me after a couple listens its hard. maybe because im not in a late 70s club or maybe because im not a psycopath. anyway, as i said they always manage to grow up on me and surprise me even. also this one is not as hard as the other ones ive listened to so far.
Remain in Light is one of the best albums ever made so this record must be slightly worse. In the end it's still a solid dose of music.

Had no idea Local Natives’ Warning Sign was a cover! Original slaps even harder with that David Byrne energy.
Occasional delights but mainly David Byrne's weird cadence waddling all over meandering melodies while Brian Eno tries to make sense of the mess of it. Lightning occasionally strikes but it's too seldom for me.
Why is there not a single song on this album about buildings or food? I can't believe I was lied to. All jokes aside, this album's pretty alright. I really like the instrumentals for this one. The whole album is very funky and I like that. The lyrics, while some songs had me a bit stumped as to what they were about, were well written and some of the meaning behind some of the songs were quite good. The pacing of this album is pretty alright as well. Now, let's talk a bit about what is, if I had to guess, the most divisive aspect of this album and band; the singing. I feel like David Byrne's singing is very love-it-or-hate-it. I myself think it's really goofy most of the time, but sometimes the singing is pretty good. I don't hate listening to the singing, but it's not the ideal experience for me. Overall, this album is definitely influential and I understand why people really like it. light 4/5.

Weird and wonderful as usual for the Talking Heads
I liked this album for the most part. Got to explore a good bit of the Talking Heads discography I didn't know anything about. I will always enjoy the Talking Heads and their weirdness.
The drums being the same on every track is so funny. like even when you thinks its gonna change, it doesn't. David Byrne is the king of catchy hooks. The good thing and stay hungry are some highlights for me.
I should have expected David Byrne would not shut up given that the band is names Talking Heads. Jokes aside, I disliked his vocals through the whole record. In fact, my favorite song was "Artist Only", where his presence is an anecdote. The band and the tracks themselves are not objectively bad. I can see the quality behind them and why they could be liked by other people.

Honestly most of this album would be a 2.5 but Take Me To The River was very very good, and I'm Not in Love is damn good too

Groovy feel. Reminds me of the music in some older movies I’ve seen. Not my type of music but i found myself really enjoying a couple of songs, and appreciated all of the songs.
Maybe it's an important album when considering the trajectory of the band's career and sound. But I don't think I needed to hear it before I died.

one of the first albums I bought that was not Southern Rock or Pop. Still sounds great I like the songs that are not radio friendly more than those that were, Artists Only, Warning Signs, Stay Hungry all great forcefull and strange. I saw them on SNL as a kid when the album came out and was amazed.
A mixed bag. Some really nice stuff and then some fairly average.

4.5 stars. This is really good, David Byrne is so talented. From the leadoff "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel", the tone is set for an upbeat, positive sound with catchy riffs and solid basslines. Enough time has passed from when those obnoxious fish mount decorations were popular that "Take Me to the River" stands alone as a great track. "The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls" is great as well.
I mean I guess I could listen to this. It was interesting but I was ready to be done with it after the second song. None of them really did it for me
I wanted to love it but ended up just liking it. It won’t smack you over the head with hooks or Melodie’s but the production is really interesting and the vocals are the classic quirky Talking Heads. 7/10

David Byrne is a brilliant frontman, but the eccentric rhythms from bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz almost single-handedly carried this album.

Not really my style
First time listen to this mostly high energy Talking Heads record with a driving beat could be the best thing I've ever heard from them. Sure I'm still not a fan of David Byrne's nasally voice and it does grate by the end, but that aside, this was a bit of a revelation for me. Standout track : I'm Not In Love
Talking Heads' second album builds upon there first. Great vocals from David, instrumentation is solid. Not really anything super significant in their discography. Still a great record, good sequencing, goes down easy.
Oh god the vocals... it's like a fever dream. I like the instrumentals though.
An awful waste of time
No doubt this is in the top of all time. A band that borrowed the Blues, for sure, but made it great in this set of songs. The new wave that came out of New York at that time produced some stunning music and laid the ground for many other changes in pop. This is beautifully quirky, sparse before they really hit their groove and the songs became top tier but still a great album.

Another band that I'm not as familiar with as I should be. Very quirky new wave art pop stuff. Even some funky tunes in there. Byrne is a cartoon character (in a good way). Has their cover of "Take Me to The River", which I've heard a bunch.

I had a friend in High School who had a cool older brother. My friend would play me albums from his brother's collection (I don't remember ever meeting the older brother). I remember hearing this went it was still relatively new and being blown away. Listening to it today, I'm still kind of impressed, This was the lead in to their best album (Fear Of Music) and before they started their slow decline into caricatures of themselves. I've enjoyed this album for most of my life and it's still enjoyable.

Pretty good album about buildings and food…liked the songs but all kind of sounded same to me.
This album wasn’t the best. There were some cool moments, and a lot of the songs were musically interesting. But it also felt a bit monotonous; a lot of the same good thing gets a little boring. The guitar, bass, and drums were all great but felt very similar from song to song. There were some interesting song structures, too. I’m really not a fan of the lyrics or delivery of the vocals, however. I’d say the album has its moments with I’m Not in Love and Artists Only. Those have great guitar parts! I kind of wish the album was an instrumental. That would eliminate the slightly annoying vocals, uninspired lyrics, and would force the songs to experiment more structurally.

Great funky tracks, pretty credible on the guitar and the drums and also pretty eventful songs although quite repetitive, really couldn’t get into the voice of the singer though. Heard about other records from them from friends of mine that I liked much more so I guess this one is just really not for me and probably not their best work either

Talking Heads is groovy as f*ck! I love the music and the diversity of sound on the album. However, David Byrns' voice is weaker than normal on this album. It doesn't help the the mix has the intraments drowning out his voice. And, the lyrics are clearly poems that they put music to, rather than songs written with a melody in mind. Later albums were much better.

Some albums have riffs that just speak to me. The Big Country is one of those songs, and the Talking Heads seem to have quite a few of them.
Took me several cycles through it to appreciate the energy and vibe. It is a bit challenging as it is certainly not standard pop melodies, but with David Byrne's staccato singing style on top of quirky driving beats and some eccentric flourishes. The more i listen to it, the more i appreciated it.
Talking Heads are so influential, even when this is not their best album. So tight too.

Dance music for a generation that grew up without dance. Upbeat, repetitive instruments with confidently poor singing. The most famous track, Take Me to the River, is slower and more interesting than the rest of the album, but as it’s a cover, no points awarded. While not my style, I see how the band bridged a generation from punk to pop.

The album that showed the world that Talking Heads weren’t a one hit wonder and were in fact a very special band. Tracks like “I’m not in Love” were so original bringing the funk to punk. The twin guitars backed up my the tightest backbeat. Not even their best, but you could include any of the bands albums and I wouldn’t be disappointed.

I really like Talking Heads but am not familiar with this album at all! Take Me to the River holds a special place in my heart, and is really well produced! The Good Thing and Warning Sign are both great songs. I like Found a Job as well! Overall, really liking it! I think probably a 4/5 for me.
Alright! Some talking heads! They will always remind me of American Psycho. Read the novel and it mentions them in there. I think they're also on the movie. Listening to this while talking to Kimberly, so a little distracted, because I just fucking love her. I think she may have put a love spell on me LOL But it's been good background noise. Such a unique voice and style. Hard not to recognize them.

I like this a lot, it’s nice and pop-dance-y but with enough unique 80’s synth rock riffs to keep from being boring. Having only ever heard Psycho Killer (and not liking it much) I didn’t expect that from the Talking Heads but was pleasantly surprised. Their cover of “Take Me to the River” was also very good.
This album isn’t full of hits, but sometimes that’s a sneaky strategy to build a well-balanced classic. I particularly like how the album title implies that the record’s contents are about inconsequential things. “What’s the new record about, David?” “Oh, I don’t know, buildings and food.” Given the Talking Heads’ nonchalant style and Byrne’s blithe voice, you’d be tempted to believe him. But it’s far more than buildings and food, and that’s the beauty of it. From couples who save their relationship by replacing the monotony of TV with nutty games of make-believe (“Found a Job”) to boys who can’t come face to face with their emotions (“With Our Love”) to a comical anti-love song (“The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls”), the contents of this album are anything but normal and expected. With lines like “You can’t see it till it’s finished,” the bizarre “Artists Only” might just be the musical interpretation of Vonnegut’s underrated 1987 novel Bluebeard. Of all the possible songs to cover, the band does a fantastic job with Al Green’s “Take Me To The River,” another late night banger I associate with the Hanszen Old Section movie room. “The Big Country” feels like a Tralfamadorian disapproval of Earthlings and our meaningless lives, but why should we care what they think? It’s a great song, and I stand by it. David Byrne’s voice may be an acquired taste, especially aside from the Talking Heads’ most popular tracks. I didn’t know much about this album coming into this listen, and while I wouldn’t expect to hear much of it on the radio, it is extremely well written. I’d go so far as to say it talks about a bit more than just buildings and food.
I've got a soft spot for Talking Heads. This wasn't my favorite album by the band, but I still enjoyed their irreverent sound.
This was, without a doubt, the most grating music I have ever heard. It sounds wrong; as if the instruments are out of tune. The sounds coming out of this thing are like undiscovered melodies that should have remained lost. The quiet vocals feel thrown in like spaghetti against a wall. I put this album on for my morning commute and arrived in record time because I wanted the music to end. This album on loop is akin to torture.

Enjoyed this a lot, one of my favourite Talking Heads albums. You can hear clear influences here on late bands. Particularly on Warning Sign, there's a part in that song that I swear I regognize from some Radiohead song, but can't remember which one. The Big Country is one of my favourite Talking Heads songs by far!

Instantly recognisable, but clearly an early work, before David Byrne figured out how to write catchy hooks. Not their best by a long way.

Best Song: Thank You For Sending Me an Angel. It is the best because it is the shortest. Less is more here. Worst Song: The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls. That little doorbell ringing is like water torture. Overall: One continuous, bouncy string of songs. It all blurs together pretty quickly, until all that you're left with is the ever-presence of this staccato rhythm that flicks you on the brain in steady 4:4 time. Music to (rhythmically) beat your head against the wall to.

Before they were dominated by Afro beat The TH had their second album full of jangling guitars and a thumping bass, full of more Byrne weirdness, which I can only take for so long, whatever my opinion on the lead singer is, this band is extremely tight and play with a lot genres in a really cool way. I probably would only return to a few songs though

opening very promising, fun, goofy etc however the album as a whole felt somewhat dissapointing as it was rather samey throughout with nothing to blow me away. opinion would probably change with a relisten tbh.
I've heard a couple songs from this album, I generally liked those. My assumption was that this album and artist would be eclectic and weird and possibly unapproachable. However, though I have only heard a couple of these songs, they all sound strangely familiar. I get the impression that this artist, and this album in particular, likely influenced many bands I have heard.

It's pretty solid. Not full of Talking Heads classics (the only song from this album I was actually familiar with was Take Me to the River), but it's undeniable how cutting edge this stuff was for 1978. 3.5/5

I am a fan of this band but I don't think I had listened very much to this particular album, so it was great to hear it all the way through, probably a first for me. Such an innovative and interesting group, and at least to my ear, they always manage to draw me in, engage my listening brain, and keep it going. Their sense and use of rhythm are particularly intriguing to me. Very skilled on their instruments, too, and they also weave in some great harmonies and melodies. David Byrne's signature vocal delivery rings clear on this album, too. Overall, a truly enjoyable listen. Thanks for reminding me how much I like the Talking Heads, dear ol' 1001 Albums project! Related note: I recently read David Byrne's 2012 book, "How Music Works", and it's excellent. I highly recommend it.
This is a good album. I like but have never loved Talking Heads. There are songs of theirs that I really love but I'd say the rest I could take or leave. I know David Byrne is a great songwriter and they're very influential but I have a hard time giving this one full stars because personally it's not all for me. If there were half stars I'd go with 3.5 but am rounding up because there are some really great tracks on here. BL: I love talking heads, they’ve been with me my entire life due to my parents putting me onto Once in a Lifetime at the age of maybe 7 or so in the car. Remain in Light is one of my favourite albums of all time - but I’ve never listened to this one, so let’s see. AL: I liked it a lot. Doesn’t hold a candle to remain in light but still a very fun listen, Byrne is quirky and clever as ever. FT: “Artists Only”, “take me to the river” “The Big Country” 4/5
Cool album. Kind of has an 80’s rock vibe with som modern production. Favorite songs are the last two : “I’m so lonely you could die”and “Heat” The title track is cool kinda reminds me of the talking heads (I thought it may have been a David Byrne colab). Other favorites are “ If you can see me” and “Dancing out in Space” Feels hard to rate this after listening only once. 4.5
Take me to the river was the only song I recognized, super cool song and album. His singing is kinda hilarious at times but I am a huge fan of David Byrne. 4? 5?

While I would never argue that the Talking Heads should not be included in the list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die, I will 100% argue that THIS album is completely unnecessary to have on the list. It's more of the same, but probably lesser than other Talking Heads albums that have already been included. Even the title of the album shrugs that it's unnecessary. So then, what are we doing here?

Maturing towards fear of music
The 4th and final Talking Heads album. I've said before I just don't care for this band. The music is fine but it just doesn't speak to me. Maybe in another decade I'll figure them out but till then, they have a few songs I like and the rest completely meh.

As a little kid I didn't know that "Take me to the River" was actually an Al Green song. I thought David Byrne wrote it. I love his cover so much. I don't know that the rest of the album is as solid as most other Talking Heads albums but I appreciate that they're never content to rest on their laurels and always pushing to connect with the audience in new ways and remain relevant. Would go 3.5 if I could.
This falls just shy of a 4 for me. I’m just never really in the mood for talking heads. The Big Country was my favorite.
If I stick to my goal of one release per band, I am not sure this would be my Talking Heads entry. However, this is a great disc and has one foot in the version of punk they displayed on their first release and one foot into the funk, rhythmic focus that would dominate the next few releases. Tina Weymouth is tremendous throughout. As Talking Heads are in my top five of all time, I recommend all of their releases (even True Stories).
A very good but not great album. Possibly the weakest in their outstanding discography. No doubt other bands wish they could have made this but it doesn’t come close to their best work.
This album doesn't have any of the group's best songs but the build at the end of "Found a Job" and inventive cover of "Take Me to the River" shows that the Talking Heads are serious musicians, and not just "quirky" art students. The influence of disco on rock and roll can be heard in a lot of the guitar playing here. David Byrne's singing is not always my favorite, but it is certainly distinct. The back half of this album is stronger than the front half in my opinion.
Easily one of my favorite bands, fantastic album
I really liked the bass lines and percussion on this album - a lot of interesting stuff happening. The vocal delivery here is just so odd, yet it doesn’t feel too out of place with the music, which is a feat of its own. I ended up being quite fascinated with how it all works together. Standouts: I’m Not In Love; Take Me To The River.

This is a solid selection of songs. Brian Eno produces, and i can definitely hear it. Tight, fun songs, and still ahead of its time for a 70s album. Not bad.

Everytime I've heard the talking heads I've liked them. Kind of band that I think I'd have loved at the time if I was around. Slightly dated now but still good stuff. 3.5*

I understand that Byrne's vocals might not be for some, but me personally, I love them. The bass lines and funky sounding guitar hooks throughout this album make it really fun, and very different. Absolutely awesome album.
Enjoyed this a damn sight more than the debut. Mood and the fact that today I played this from decent speakers would've played a part, but the songs are better, there's a flow to the record, and it's a lot less stiff. David Byrne sounds more interesting, and the band's killing it. Am surprised, as the debut near-convinced me they weren't for me.
Getting better, the sound is in place but the songs are still a bit off. Take Me To The River is the definitive version. Stingy 3*
Musically solid. Vocals are perfectly suited to some tracks but I would love to hear someone else sing on most of these tracks.

This is the second Talking Heads album that I've gotten on this list (the first being Remain in Light), and I absolutely loved this album. I loved the rhythm-heavy sound of this album, both for the bass and lead guitar parts. The rhythm focused sound worked well regardless of whether the song was a faster tempo, like the lead track "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel," or a slower tempo, like the cover of "Take Me to the River." And speaking of the title track, "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" was the perfect way to start this album off. There were some wonderful piano, organ, and synthesizer parts on this album as well, especially on "Artists Only," "Stay Hungry," and the "Take Me to the River." This album had the perfect amount of funk influence, and even a little rockabilly in my opinion. Every track on here was fantastic, with "I'm Not in Love" being my favorite of the bunch. I don't know if the sound of this album was due completely to Brian Eno's production, or if it was just the direction the band decided to take, but either way, this is a masterpiece of late 70's post punk music.

‘More Songs About Buildings And Food’ rattles along over its two sides. It’s slightly more punk than funk, but it’s still groovy, as the Heads signpost the direction they would head towards on subsequent albums. There’s lots of highlights here, a few being ‘The Good Thing’, ‘Found A Job’, and ‘I’m Not In Love’, as well as their superb cover of ‘Take Me To The River’. A really enjoyable forty minutes.

4/5. I want to give this a 5 just cause of the uniqueness but some are definitely skippable, especially the last song. It still bops though and is a fantastic record nonetheless. I never realized how integral the instrumentation was to Byrne’s voice, they work so well together.
Talking Heads have at least 3, probably 4, albums which are arguably their best. This is one of them. Straight 🔥

Talking Heads are nice.
I always love some Talking Heads. From the interesting rhythmic guitar playing to the unique vocals, this is a great album. I also love the Brian Eno production, which probably at least in part due to the fact that it’s Brian Eno. Amazing, and it only foreshadows the absolute masterpiece Remain in Light.

1978 "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" (track 1) is a keeper Has "Take Me to the River" which is a classic "The Big Country" is a great change of pace and is makes me think of Neutral Milk Hotel (was probably an inspiration)

Talking Heads; nothing and noone sound quite like them. This is sometimes a very good thing, but also sometimes not. This album does have some great music on it - but are Talking Heads overrepresented on this list? Yes, probably.
Like I said last time, kind of a weird genre of music I can't quite put my finger on, can't quite love, but enjoy and respect their talent.

Still figuring out who they are; Burn's vocals are more confident now, the rhythm section is tighter, more forward and expressive, but the song writing is still hit and miss, and it's telling that the high point on the album is a cover.
