good but not a top 100 imho
Take me out on the Madden 04 soundtrack is classic shit.
Loved it in high school, still some bangers
6/10 generic mid 2000s music. Modest mouse light. 4-23-2025
Fun little time capsule of its moment in music. Definitely feels of its era though
Tämä oli periaatteessa ihan helposti lähestyttävää musiikkia, levyn jaksoi hyvin kuunneltua loppuun. Ei herätä suuria tunteita suuntaan tai toiseen, keskimmäinen arvosana 3/5.
Autossa jumissa motarilla puoli tuntia. Ehti kuunnella. Iha kiva, muutama tuttu rykäsy. En vaihtais kanavaa
Ihan ok levy.
3.5
Pretty good
With the exception of Take Me Out, there was nothing super memorable about this one. Doesn’t mean it was bad, just felt very generic.
Meh. Take Me Out and This Fire are pretty good, the rest of the album just didn’t really make an impression
Paar bangers
They were definitely a thing at a time. I haven't listened to them since whenever 20 years ago.Let's see how they stand the test of time. ... They're ok. Even quite good at times. I don't think I'm a fan. Three stars.
Alright. Great riffs. Singer's voice just not for me. Stand out song - 40'
Nothing really stuck out to me but the album as a whole did push most of the right buttons for me. Not too shabby. Top 3 Favorites: Take Me Out, The Dark Of The Matinee, and Tell Her Tonight No bad songs 3.00-3.25
Just okay.
So I imagined this list would have 1 of 2 kinds of albums. The first being albums that are fundamental to a genre or movement, or the history of music, or just such a work of art you should make the time to appreciate it. And the second being one-hit wonder bands and the corresponding album. This is the latter as far as I’m concerned. It’s a fine album. It’s not amazing, and even the parts where it felt like they actually had some personality didn’t really intrigue me all that much. Franz Ferdinand being the obvious exception. It feels like a very generic album and sound considering the decade it came out in, and that they were really just fighting for a big hit and not a good album.
It was alright. Maybe like 2 good songs on there
Good
I loved this album when it came out. Now it feels a bit dated though
Solid album. Sounds great. Probably will never listen again though.
3.5
3.0
Take me out has got to be one of the top “get stuck in your head” songs
Good ‘00s indie rock. The Strokes are a better version of them
Solid, but really the best song on there is take me out and everyone knows it.
Day447 - i can hear how this could be your favorite band if you were a teenager in the 2000’s. take me out is a good song but overall frank ferdinand sounds like five other bands to me
thought it would have been worse
Holds up
Its a pretty standard album but its not boring, its just fine
Album art:5
Take Me Out does indeed slap. It's definitely the best song on this album by a wide margin. The rest ranged from forgettable to somewhat fun. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it.
Catchy
3.0 - Ok
had not listened to anything other than take me out before I think, the rest of the album sounds exactly how I imagined it'd be, not in a bad way tho 3.5
Good album. 3/5
this is a fun one! unfamiliar with their songs outside just the radio hits, so this was a good surprise.
I still feel like this era of bands was cheesy. But I just can't get past it.
Quirky; at times fun, at times just kind of annoying. Two legit ear worms. Except for the bass, the recordings are strikingly flat and thin. Maybe trying to accommodate that vocal treatment; which may have seemed edgy and clever at the time, but just sounds weak and silly in retrospect. I don't mind listening to this album. But I had it on regular rotation for a bit when it came out and 22 or whatever years later, I haven't once thought, I really want to listen to that Franz Ferdinand album.
It’s back to 2000s British indie. And I know the only reason this made the list is the admittedly brilliant Take Me Out, so brilliant in fact that it has managed over 1 billion streams on Spotify. I was not expecting that. Apart from track three, and the choruses of tracks 1 and 4, this is that same 2000s British indie. Or more specifically, Glaswegian indie. Maybe this went so big because it was pushed by Glasgow’s tourist board? “Aye we’ve got some a tha’ aul ‘Indie’ music tae!” What I will say is that this album has started to prove my hypothesis of ‘if I owned the CD and didn’t have anything else to play, I’d grow to like it’. My father owns this CD, and playing it out of proper speakers has made some areas better than I remember. Only marginally though. Ah, it’s a bit of fun, I suppose. You can see why people love it.
Ah Franz Ferdiepants Pretty easy listen Jangly poppy dancy guitar music that dominated the early aughts. Some interesting guitar parts and some cool grooves but not something I’d return to regularly. In the same vein as Futureheads, Razorlight, Modest Mouse.
I bought this cd solely based on the song Take Me Out which was frequently being played on the radio. I loved the song. It was catchy and different than most of the music getting airtime. But the album never fully grabbed me. I’m not sure exactly why. I think there was disappointment that the remaining songs were not as strong as Take Me Out. Or the band created that song solely for radio to grab listeners and it wasn’t ultimately their style. Either way, the album felt disjointed and lacked additional songs to fully pull me in. Upon listening to the album today, I enjoy it more than I recall 20 years ago. But to my ears, it still lacks flow or consistency. The album as a whole doesn’t provide a listening experience that entices me to come back. And while the songs are enjoyable, I find them to be forgettable.
If we consider the early 2000s rock movement to be a revitalization of various flavors of punk/alternative music with bands like White Stripes and The Strokes, this album firmly cements its status as part of the “New Wave” wing. It embraces funky baselines and catchy rhythm-guitar riffs similar to early Talking Heads records (the vocalist even has some David Byrne-esque inflection in places) that I was immediately able to latch onto. These songs are undeniably catchy and pop songs at their core, which makes them easy to “get” the first time you listen. What I think could keep bringing me back to this album though is how is paired with the rough-around-the-edges nature of the production consistent in alternative forms of music. As I have gone on my now decade-long project to “go back” and find what legendary artists shape my taste in music, it is becoming clear to me that I’m usually drawn to artists that have pop sensibility for songwriting/structure but have smothered it in the aesthetics of an “alternative” music genre so it becomes nearly unrecognizable as pop music. Artists that are among my all-time favorites like Kendrick Lamar, Nirvana, Joni Mitchell and the aforementioned Talking Heads are masters of this and I would put this record in a similar category. However, it will be interesting to me though how much I come back to this. I enjoyed it and I think if I was 20 in 2004 when this came out, there’s a good chance their next releases would have been something I’d be extremely excited for. But with other bands from this era taking already precedence for any nostalgia I have for this time period of rock, I’m not sure I’ll revisit this over those. I wouldn’t count it out after a deeper discog dive though.
"Take Me Out" is a banger of its time that holds up. The segue into the riff still excites me. Early 00s rock with clean lines, affection for disco, and hook-driven tunes. It's a strong enough debut, but it didn't blow me away. I do hear the influence this had on indie rock that came after it. I can also hear FF's influence all over their sleeves, however, so there's no great reinvention of the wheel going on.
When this album came out it hit at the right time for me. However now, outside of the famous song, there wasn’t a lot that excited me. Not terrible just ok. 3/5
One of a wave of new UK Guitar Power Pop bands of the early 2000s. Entirely acceptable, but not particularly distinctive.
Up and down in terms of quality but the highs are really high
3/5
Yep, that sounded about like I figured it would. I knew Take Me Out before this, that's it. This is a slice of indie rock from the 00s that is pretty typical of the genre. Lots of disco beats, chugging, barely overdriven guitars, quirky filtered vocals, it's got it all. It's fine, just not a sound I particularly care about.
⭐⭐⭐ Good listening experience
Not bad but it didn't grab me any more than it did when it originally came out
I like weird, but maybe only mild weird. Besides their major hit "Take Me Out," this was so weird it just wasn't fun to listen to.
Take me out is a really good well known song, but the rest of this album just kinda fell flat for me. There’s some decent songs but none that gave me the same feeling that take me out does when I hear it. I’d say a 3 with take me out and a 2.5 without.
Super fun music , I felt like I was in a club undercover on a spy mission in a 2000s tv show. Take me out is obv a banger, and there were a few other songs I’d go back and listen to. A tad repetitive at times, but overall a pretty solid album. 3.4/5 Fav song: Take me out
Other than Take Me Out being a banger, I was a little disappointed by the rest of the album ngl. 2.8/5
Take Me Out carries hard, probably the best song from a band named after a racehorse
This was pleasant enough to listen to but I didn't really feel like it was all that impressive. Weird, I just gave a similar review to my last album so maybe I'm just in a mood.
sounds like 2004, for better or worse
Ok so I wanted to like this more, not that I didn't...but wanted it to be great. The lead singer has a great voice but I got lost in some of the arrangements...still solid but not stellar.
Franz Ferdinand have always been one of those bands which I thought were okay, but never bowled over by them. It's perfectly listenable, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it. 3/5
Rätt bra!
Fun to hear some of these tunes for first time in 15+ years. Drags a bit near end
Pretty good music, especially for its time
It has THE FF song on it, everything else is decent. They didn’t quite find their groove, but they were getting there.
Once upon a time, this accessible, punchy, and fun album made mainstream music lovers feel a little (undeservingly) underground while they listened to Take Me Out on their lime green iPod nano. Is this the greatest album of all time? No. Is this album filled head to tail with bops that perfectly encapsulate pop indie rock music in the early 2000s? Absolutely. Bonus points for making us all brush up on our WWI history circa 2004.
A decent rock album, no more, no less. Must hear before you die? Nah.
i wanted to love this album but it might have been a little too simple for me
2004. Rock/Pop. 7/10 Take Me Out / This Fire
A better album than I would’ve thought for an artist I only knew one song from. Take Me Out is the biggest bop though
Take Me Out is one of the best songs of the 00's. I love the tempo change after the intro. the rest of the album was ok but didn't do much for me.
Quite enjoyed this one.
Love one song
Loved it. Not exactly my style though.
"It's always better on holiday, So much better on holiday. That's why we only work when we need the money."
meh, good energy, catchy some times, too-samey
Not bad but nothing outstanding and not my first choice.
Should to love this album - transported me back to a happy place
I didn't particularly enjoy this when it came out, and I still don't today, but I think it has aged relatively well. I don't think it shows its age at all and that I think is praiseworthy in and of itself.
I didn't hate this - just wish it offered more. While listening I drew plenty of 'LCD Soundsystem' and 'The KIllers' comparisons. But this album is far more consistent than any project out of those guys. It's also more rooted in its post-punk influences - filled to the brim with these staccato guitar hits, akin to groups like 'Bloc Party'. Granted it still contains the quirky, referential style of all those bands - sing-along choruses included. While a fun listen, the sounds get old quickly - and the overly theatric vocal style doesn't help remedy this grating effect. There are riffs for days here, but not the slightest hint of a change in song structure. I'll cut the band some slack, it is a debut after all, and with that considered, it's pretty damn consistent. The big hit 'Take Me Out' is oddly enough the most interesting song here from a structural perspective with that early switch-up. 'Auf Achse' was a nice change of pace - introducing synths, and keys, and it goes in this more introspective, yet still angsty lyrical direction. It's got the most winner chorus here though - super catchy and hard-hitting. 'Come On Home' also won me over for similar reasons and the closing '40 was quite the explosive finish with that tremolo-picked guitar. If you want pure, unfiltered, boilerplate post-punk revival music, I can't think of a better album than this one to get that fix - or just to get introduced to the genre in general. I'd say that statement sums up the best and worst things about this album pretty well.
The bass was great. Other than that it's just mid
I was actually vibing with this one- I thought it was a nice, classic rock sounding album that was due for awhile. I don’t think it really sets itself apart, necessarily, from others which makes me lower my rating, but not bad.
Not bad
6/10 Highlights: Take Me Out Jaqueline This Fire Auf Achse 40'
Ages passably. I like “Jacqueline” and “Take Me Out.” Neutral on a lot of the rest of it.
classic fun album with a predictable and familiar sound that touched on sort of the indie grunge/garage punk sound of hte day.
E bom mais, mas é um indiozinho muito alegre pro meu gosto
Better than I remember but I'd rather listen to the post-punk bands that influenced them instead.
Previously listened: Take Me Out Favorites: The Dark of the Matinèe, Auf Achse, 40’
Some really good post punk and some songs that get annoying. There are disco moments here too. Favorites: Jaqueline, Take Me Out, the Dark of the Matinee, Auf Achse, This Fire
'Take Me Out' is certainly a classic. I remember getting sick of the song after hearing it a million times, but after years away from it I can thankfully enjoy it again. I had never listened to the rest of the album before. It's mostly forgettable, but makes for good background music.
Take Me Out I've heard a LOT and its certainly an air-worthy song (though I don't think I'd ever intentionally put it on). The rest of the album feels like more of the same though. This feels like a "hit song you should hear" entry rather than an ALBUM you need to hear entry.
dnf…snoozefest!
First time through and realized never listened to this whole album. A few really great ones and the. It gets monotonous.
This came out in my student days and I was quite into them, but I'm kind of meh about them now. Sort of a poor man's Sparks with lyrics a la Pulp, but I don't think they've aged as well as the latter. (I don't really mean to sound so harsh, they're still a good band!)
I'm not sure this holds up, but I still.liked the singles.
Solid album but Take me out stands above the rest. Good for that reason but not much else special.
indie essential, very dated sound but overall still decent. 6/10
Standard 2004, post punk revival/indie rock album. Not bad, but not really memorable.
I have heard of a few Franz Ferdinand sons and I enjoy their music. Not enough to love every song on this album though. For me this has a lot of highs and lows. Some song I just wanted to skip mid way through because they weren't very good. All that said it was fun listening to more of a band I had a limited amount of exposure to.
Lyrics: 2/5 Music: 3/5 Production: 3/5 Cohesiveness: 4/5 Overall: 3/5 Stand out songs: Take me out The dark of the matinée
😐. 3. Barely.
Some good tunes
Decent 2000s radio rock music. Stand-out: 40'
I liked it, and they are talented, but I’m not sure if I would return to it.
Inventive British pop. Quirky, melodic and with an edge. Very good.
Some catchy tunes and a solid album but didnt blow me away. 3.5
Ach ja FF, ich erinnere mich dunkel. Ganz gefällig. Ein Titel fällt mir ins Auge: Auf Achse. Eine meiner Jugend-Lieblingssendungen im Ersten. Manfred Krug als Brummifahrer. Dank UTube gleich mal die erste Folge geschaut. Im Abspann steht: Titelmelodie Elton John. Unfassbar. Keine Ahnung ob das mit FF zusammenhängt. Aber dafür erhöhe ich von geplanten 2* auf 3*
3.3 3x catchup 12/27
Ok. Remind of new wave
Whos never heard "Take me out" nowadays? The other songs were alright, reminded me of my alt rock era but a bit more dancey.
Franz Ferdinand, such a long time ago i listened to it.
Classic album, I liked it!
Un son bien marqué par la basse et le drum, souvent marqué par une accélération ou une sorte d'entropie, comme si les pièces nous entraînaient, et aussi par le traitement de la voix.
I say: Take. Me. Out. 3/5
This album is an OK collection of post-punk and garage rock, but a little too poppy for my tastes.
3.5
Some cool songs, but overall not too special. 3.5 stars
3.5
Funky indie rock with tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Standout tracks: Take Me Out, Dark of the Matinee, '40, Tell Her Tonight, Come On Home.
This was sort of catchy, I see the Take Me Out song is hugely popular on Spotify and I think I've heard that before in a tv show or movie maybe. Some good guitar licks in here and some catchy beats but overall not too memorable for me by the end, decent background music by that point. Maybe a 3 star for me.
Structurally interesting, good playing, but the production was ear-fatiguing. If I'm in the right mood, I can see enjoying this album more than I did on this listen, so I'll settle on 3 stars.
Franz Ferdinand is unremarkable but does enough to hold my attention fairly for a style/genre I'm not really into, although that's possibly unfair because they mix it up a fair bit throughout. Mostly, I don't like Alex Kapranos' vocals, so the stuff where he isn't singing is better for me, and Auf Achse is the best track on this album, followed by 40', sure he sings on both but it's not the main attraction and they create a really cool sound across both. The rest of the album is sort of the same fayre as the big hits, decent enough but they become earworms that you'd rather not listen to very often for fear of them getting annoying. Gets a 3 though, a low one, but solid enough.
Another throwback to my youth, which is nice. I think this is better than quite a lot of its era - it's a bit more creative, more diverse than most coming out at that time. Is it a bit pretentious? Yeah, for sure, but there's enough there to back it up - not enough to get it to a 4, but it's a very comfortable 3. Take Me Out is one of the best songs of that era, I like Matinee, Michael, and Come On Home as well. 3/5.
Didn’t really scream to me but it wasn’t bad.
3.5
Totally unremarkable. Never managed to grab my attention.
I truly only know maybe one song off this album and even by Franz. Pretty good pop rock music.
Good songs that are nevertheless hard to listen to in a full album session, since they all sort of sound the same.
A fun listen
Not bad.
good listening, nothing crazy, love theme, i like the instrumentals and singer's vocals. fav songs: The Dark of the Matinee, Darts of Pleasure 7.1/10
"Take Me Out" is one of my favorite Rock songs of the 21st Century, ever since I first heard it as a wild Middle Schooler. The rest of the album didn't floor me away, but it's not bad at all. Favorite Song: "Take Me Out".
Franz Ferdinand is one of those bands that I never heard of until I ihear a few songs and realize "oh, this is those guys!" This is also one of those albums that makes a five star rating system difficult for me. I see one star as horrible and a fail. (there is no zero) or even a half. So two star is bad to pretty bad, three star is average to OK, which fits most albums pretty well, four stars which is a true step above and pretty great, and five stars as one of best, awesome. So this band, while good, entertaining, and fun is not quite great while being above average, so three stars should be three and a half, alas, I must rate on a five point no zero scale...
Was fine 20 years ago, is still fine. A high 3 rather than a low 3 but definitely a 3
Alt rock/pop. Not too bad, something that would make good radio noise.
I remember at least one of these songs from Guitar Hero back in the day. The rest are a fun listen in the background.
All too samey. An unfortunate disappointment, not even bad, just disappointing. I was expecting Arctic Monkeys 2, but instead got generic dance punk with no differences between tracks. Take Me Out is beast still.
Just average for me. Didn’t love or hate it.
I liked this for the most part. It wasn't astounding but pretty good.
The hits are the worst part of this. There is so much excellent material but the heavy hitters here are so embarrassingly generic. Solid. Worth digging deep into.
The hits hit, but the deep cuts don’t offer too much for me.
This album and the track 'Take Me Home' truly define the summer of 2004. With many indie artists emerging at the time, sifting through the singles of so many bands was exciting. While it's a fun listen, I’m not entirely convinced by the whole album. It’s enjoyable but perhaps best left where I found it in 2004.
Okay … except for that one song
This album is pretty solid. Nice sound and each track offers varying styles. Not my favorite type of music but I did listen to this entire album twice and don't regret it.
It’s a good album but I don’t like the band.
Always saw this band as a one-hit wonder, riding the coat tails of the Strokes. The album actually has a lot more to offer than the hit “take me out”. At times it’s a happier Queens of the Stone age, and at others it is a poppy party album. The vibes remain fun and energetic which helps a lot. Not bad.
One rock banger. Entertaining but also bit boring. LoL. ToggiKlüb at Toggi
pretty funny actually chli dirty mit es paar hopfe torpedos ziemlich lustig - hans im toggi gloset mitem nedi & noah
easy listening experience while preparing for a fun trip, take me out? more like take me back to fifa 2005
Very Hit and miss imo
Enjoyable early 00s indy rock. You couldn't go anywhere in 2004 without hearing "Take Me Out" playing somewhere on the radio. Refreshing and enjoyable. Also, it's nice that it was just under 40 minutes.
Well, Franz Ferdinand has a sound and they stick to it. This is a good album if you like that sound, but it's not overwhelmingly awesome or anything.
Not bad
THE MEMORIES. Loved this album back in the day. The b-sides are kind of garbage but the singles are fffire. Fav Track: Michael
It was pretty good. Not amazing but not terrible.
Good stuff
Like it. Some great songs on this album and would rate it 3.5/5
3.5
Take Me Out has one of the all-time best opening riffs and is a great song along with many others on the album. The drums also stood out as being really good. But will I actively seek this out again? Maybe? Which lands this at 3⭐️
When I saw this album on here, I was hoping to find something new and exciting inside. However all I got was Take Me Out and the rest. It's a good album, and helped gild the emergence of so much similar music from Glasgow and the whole UK
Take Me Out and The Dark Of The Matinée are bangers, but the rest is pretty forgettable.
Fine but nothing special besides the one banger.
Good stuff. Saw them live in Osheaga. They are much more than their hits.
and if you're lonely.. you know i'm here (im referencing the military propaganda)
Very much a moment in time but some great bangers. Set off a wave of copycats and changed the indie landscape.
It was okay.
It was OK. Nothing spectacular.
Fun
Oh 2004. What a time to be alive/8 years old. Listen. The NHL 2005 soundtrack reference alone is going to win this album points. Energy is good and fairly infectious. The repetition is a little unnecessary. I’ll never understand why people take bad ideas and repeat them endlessly. Although this riff is very fun. This first song is impressing me overall. High energy. Not bad. Oh no. More disco-y. This was my concern when I saw this album pop up. The David Bowie wannabe stuff. It’s fine. I don’t like this chorus. While we’ve heard a thousand bands like this in Chevrolet commercials at this point, it was new at this time. Still, a hyper-annoying chorus. Worrying that it may be a theme. Oh god. The menu comes rushing back. About to attempt to load a corrupted GameCube memory card save file. Nostalgia pushed below the surface, this song rips. The groove is palpable, the energy is ferocious. Despite the implications of the beginning of WWI, this song is simply fun. A step down in energy. Why do all these nerds try to be sexy? Don’t sing about stuff you don’t know. Almost a vaguely metallic riff on this one until the lull sets in. Arctic Monkeys lite here. Not the best but listenable. Stretching the song too far and along with it, my patience. Looking ahead at the lyrics like a child with a low attention span, I’m anticipating a dance song for virgins. Lyrics = annoying. Piano stabs = obnoxious. The bridge seems to rev up and get you excited for a thrilling breakdown, but it just falls back into the doldrums. This is a filler track. Achtung. This is standard rock fare. Not a travesty, but give me something exciting. The riff is good but there’s something missing. There’s an air of trying to be cool that I can’t get past, but it at least drives. Safely. Just below the speed limit. While really only one track has jumped at me, this is a listenable album overall. I can develop critiques for pretty much anything (and have).”This fire is outta control, gotta burn this city” is lame. Write a better lyric. Use a less laboured metaphor than the tired fire and burning with said fire. If nickelback has made liberal use of this metaphor, maybe it’s time to reconsider. (yes in the future but the point stands). No low voice either. Stop that. Thrilling start followed by a bad vocal. This is really the main issue with the album. The vocals are less than sufferable, and I have suffered. I have a rule about listening to music that was written with the express purpose of picking up women; don’t. He’s trying to be sensitive Jim Morrison here and it hurts. The estate may sue. Hell, I may get in on that (class) action. Picking up men now? Different for the time and more interesting. Less “simp-y”. The voice is less insufferable, so that’s good. The energy is higher here and the experience was better. When one has been taken out, eventually, they must come home. Lower key, but a fun guitar riff and vocal inflection. A little more variety in the singing here has made it more interesting. Softer moments help you appreciate the funk guitar sections that ring throughout the album. Good song. Near the end comes the variety, but more low singing which is not great. Also, drop the la la la. Not working for ya. Well I suppose they’ve enjoyed years of financial success whilst I write about their album (poorly) 20 years later, but still, it’s bad. Not a horrible song. Gorillaz Clint Eastwood stabs near the end???? Discordant outro makes me happy. I can appreciate this album for being pioneering, and for being interesting, but it’s just not really for me. It was enjoyable in parts, painful in others, but I suppose that’s the whole idea of this experiment. HIGHLIGHTS: Jacqueline, Take Me Out, Come on Home
I really liked Take Me Out, but all other songs were just fine
a very solid early 00s pop rock album. doesn’t overstay its welcome and is pretty consistent throughout
Bought this at the time, mostly on the strength of Take Me Out. Still comfortably the best track on the album but there are some hidden gems in the form of Tell Her Tonight and Michael. I never quite fell in love with it as an album and don't feel that Franz Ferdinand really lived up to the hype. Fizzled out very soon after their patchy sophomore effort. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane as this took me right back to my first year at uni but it's still in the 'good' not 'great' column for me.
Not bad, not good.
Decent
It was okay.
This album was inescapable for a few years. I hadn't heard the whole thing in a long time. It's still a decent album. Jacqueline and Take Me Out are great of course. One thing I love about this album is that it doesn't all sound the same. I mean it's recognizable as the same band obviously, but especially for a first album it's not like they found one sound and stuck to it. There's a lot of different things going on. A lot of it is sort of like indie rock/disco which is a weird mashup that somehow works. I love the bass on this album. A good disco bass is always super fun and mixing it in with an indie rock album is a win in my book. I'm not sure I would really call this a great album but it's fun. It has a good vibe, is fun to listen to. I'm a little torn on the rating - I'm not sure it's a 4/5 but I think I like it better than 3/5. So who knows. I guess I'll round down because when it was over, I wasn't really hoping for it to keep going. So 3/5 it is I suppose.
Not really a whole lot to say. This is the quintessential sound of the mid 2000s. Not bad, but not that interesting either.
I guess this is an okay album. Take me out was really big at some point. But is this album really influential and important??? Or just a filler in this list like most songs on it???
Essential early millennial listening that set the trend for tumblr pop in the years to come. The pop hits are hits for a reason, sometimes the performances and deliveries towards the end get a bit lethargic, and not in the cool way. Still, almost anything post-2000 is refreshing for this list
i guess it’s okay. the dude sounds a lot like the dude from the strokes. i guess if i’d heard this before i heard the strokes i’d say the guy from the strokes sounds like the guy from franz ferdinand
Take me out is a banger but the rest were kind of meh. Ended up liking it more after reading more about the album and some of the lyrics. Don't see myself coming back for a full listen through.
oof, Same ol'
Nice tempo and feeling through the whole album with faster beats good for dancing and power walking. I like the blend of conventional instruments with solid guitar riffs and simple drum beats with the more unusual added electrical parts in the back. The album has captured a reckless yet laid-back vibe, like cheap beer and loud music in a dimly lit bar. The lyrics are pretty simple yet straightforward and honest. It's definitely a good album and the vibe is right up my alley, but the sound can get repetitive and despite the lyrics being good they don't really speak to me. I'll definitely keep listening to a few of the songs, Take Me Out and 40' being my favorites, but the album as a whole didn't blow me away.
It’s hard to believe this dance punk indie rock sound is already nearly 20 years old. I remember it like it was yesterday and how fresh it sounded when it first came out. Now, listening to it feels a bit dated. Franz Ferdinand definitely had a cleaner, more polished sound, but they did a pretty good job at making an album that was fun to listen to from beginning to end. I used to play this album a lot in my car, so it was definitely a trip down memory lane.
This would have been right up my street when it came out and I never bonded with it. Fresh ears don't reveal much to make me change my opinion. Pop dressed as punk with a Roxy music vibe. A couple of good singles but nothing to make the heart soar.
Franz Ferdinand's album sounds like a mash of White Stripes percussive music with the singing style of David Byrne in Talking Heads. It doesn't really appeal to me. Take Me Out is a solid single though. 3/5.
Take me out obviously the classic banger on here. Not entirely sure why this is on the list with so many other greats albums in the 00s.
Franz Ferdinand’s self-titled debut doesn’t reinvent the post-punk wheel, but it sure polishes it with a stylish Scottish sheen. Channeling the arty angularity of Talking Heads with sharper hooks and more pronounced melodies, the Glasgow quartet updates the sound with a UK New Wave edge and a touch of brogue. Their commitment to taut guitar riffs, clipped rhythms, and deadpan delivery is both their strength and limitation—after a while, the formula starts to feel a little too tightly wound. Still, there are standouts: “Take Me Out” is an undeniable dancefloor killer, “Tell Her Tonight” pops with harmony-driven charm, and “Auf Achse” provides a welcome shift with its moody piano-led verses. “Come on Home” closes the loop with its driving rhythm and knife-like guitar jabs, sealing the album as a stylish, if slightly repetitive, debut.
ok
Not a memorable album. Sound is high quality. “Take Me Out” was fun, but also played in the radio a lot. Meh. Mid 3
Frat guys discover post punk and start a band. I remember when "Take Me Out" was everywhere on the radio. It was an ok song, but I never looked into the band closer than that. Turns out I didn't really need to, because you can pretty much sing the lyrics to "Take Me Out" over most of the other songs on the album. The music starts out cool but quickly gets repetitive (see above comment). The lyrics are stupid. It's just a very meh album. Toward the end of it I kept thinking how much better their contemporaries were, like The Killers. The next song that came on after FF ended was off of Hot Fuss. So, yeah. Listen to The Killers instead. 3/5 — not the worst, but very mid. I'm not sure why this deserves to be on an all-time must-listen list.
There are a couple Franz Ferdinand tracks I know and are catchy as hell, so I was curious to see what else they have to offer with a full record. This is definitely a solid record with a lot of the landmarks of mid-00s alt rock. Catchy, simple hooks that are easy to dance to and some you can headbang to as well. Perhaps not enough oomph to make me want to revisit the record as a whole, but a pleasant listen to anyone who's a fan of that era. Notable Tracks: - Tell Her Tonight - Take Me Out - Auf Achse - Michael - hell yeah 6/10
All the songs sound like songs you hear in a wedding scene in a modern comedy (not in a bad way. Am I making sense?)
This opens so strongly but unfortunately dies down a bit after the stellar Dark of the Matinee. The closing track is really good as well, but everything else in between is just a bit forgettable, which is a bit of a shame after those first four great tracks
This is a good enough album. I'd listened to the singles off of it since I was young, and while the rest of the album didn't match up to the singles they at least tried. 2.5/5 -> 3/5
Surprisingly good. Reminds me of a cross between The Cars and Elvis Costello. Take Me Out is great, and some other nice songs as well.
Decent album, but too niche for my taste.
Great for the straightforward best drive rock that it is. Madden start screen flashbacks
This was so great when it came out, and it’s still mostly good.
Very solid 3.5 stars!

I was thinking I hadn’t ever really listened to this band but take me out is the song that would play on the menu screen of John Madden 2004 for the GameCube. I played the shit out of that game and I’ve heard that song 1 million times. I liked this record more than I thought I would too.
Okay indie rock from the 2000 only one memorable song
Youthful, can imagine it playing in a dorm in the early 2000s, can imagine every song on a ps2 fifa menu. The authenticity is so apparent, the band is being cheeky without seeming to try too hard. Makes me want a beer with the boys, some fifa in the backround, the pub and night in front of us. That’s the first half of the album. second half: Marching band vibes, great back up vocals that are mixed perfect, blending in perfectly with the preaching lead vocals. slight stagnation in albums middle, too much marching band rhythm, could change with a hit. The lyrics, although not my favourite style, have to be admired for their rawness, almost as though they’ve been extracted from journal entries. I do wish some of the light was taken from the lyrics trying to be too prophetic and put into melodys and music. an album with potential but i found it couldn’t recover from it middle lull, still solid.
Some bangers. Some fillers
Solid dance-punk record. I honestly did not care for Take Me Out when it came out. Listening to it now though, it's a solid fun song. I had never listened to this album before. It's fun and very dancey and I've been really into post-punk and dance-punk recently so this came at a perfect time.
I don't know why this music was so popular in the early 2000s. I kind of The Arctic Monkeys, The Hives, Kaiser Chiefs, and Franz Ferdinand in the same bucket. Its like British guitar led post-punk indie dance rock. There's nothing really wrong with it, but it's interesting to me that none of this music really lasted longer than the early 2000s. ....maybe because it all kind of sounds the same? There are certainly unique and interesting elements: cool guitar effects with kind of low-fi solos and leads, and typically pretty groovy bass lines. However, it never really totally does it for me. Perhaps there was just too much of it that it all kind of drowned it self out? Or maybe it's that their American counterparts were just better? It's hard for me to pin down the legacy of this style of indie rock, but I would wager that it an effect on bands like The Strokes and The Killers. And those bands seem to do this style of music differently. They most certainly elevated the genre.
Okay, 6.5/10
i didn’t love this but i didn’t hate it.
It did not start well and was considering dropping it, but it actually grows on you the more you listen to it. Stand out songs are obviously Take Me Out and This Fire
Take Me Out - classic. The rest is perfectly ok.
Would I listen to it again: I don't think so. Do I like it: It's OK
There are a few pretty good songs at the top of this one but it wears out it's welcome for me after a bit.
Track after track has the same choppy guitar thing that makes them so recognisable. So ... a bit samey for me .3 Lucky 3
I like it ok, but just average for me
Definitely vibey in a Strokes kind of way
Bops all around
Now, there is a couple of huge tunes on this, but they’ve been played to exhaustion! The album itself is full of spiky, disco tinged indie pop and it’s pretty good! Doesn’t break any walls or anything but is very much an acceptable album.
ok, I guess. bit weird to hear some random silly German lines at the end of one of the tracks. and ok, I'd heard "Take Me Out" before (possibly from Rocksmith?) but nothing terribly stand-out.
"Take me out" is a pretty nice song. The rest doesn't really suit my taste.
Pretty solid for a debut album. On one or two songs I swear I vocally hear Thomas Dolby for a couple of seconds but I could be off. The sound is solid, they mesh everything well. I understand why they got popular. Some decent energy. This Fire is a fun song. Fairly crisp overall. Not a ton of depth but well put together. Hard album to review.
It's fine but I seem to find music from this era missing body or a warmth to the sound. Really struggling with this one. I don't really care for the posh affectation used on most of the vocals. I'm confused.
I remember this album from 2004. The radio wore out a couple of the tracks but many of the others are the real gems IMO. I like it more today than then.
Thought I would like this more since I has heard take me out and this fire and liked them
This is of my era but never got into then. There's a good single or two on here but nothing that really hits for me.
I saw Franz Ferdinand live in Paris, 2005, and met the band afterwards. The bassist’s parents took a photo of me with their son, so I’m in their family photo album somewhere!
It's fine. I enjoyed it because I was able to reminisce about memories.
3.5/5
Honestly, this record has one massive hit, and otherwise, it's not terribly memorable. Not bad -- if it was bad, it would be memorable LOL but nothing special.
Take me out is a banger that’s a given and the overall vibe is pretty solid
Take Me Out is a classic, rest is meh
It was a good listen.
I always want Franz Ferdinand to be better than they are. When in reality, this album sounds like the Strokes had a baby with The Killers and this is what came out. This album is very much landfill indie. It’s not bad by any stretch, but it’s not anything special either.
Liked it!
This was a cool time music. It feels like it's the last gasp of the punk moving having a significant impact on indie and rock music before it would get much more electronic heavy. I was a big fan of this band growing up but I don't know if I ever listened to much beyond Take me Out off this album. It checks a lot of boxes for what I really liked about this decade in rock but I don't know if I would call it exemplary for time and the lyrics leave a lot to be desired. I think you could do better in this decade than this.
Not bad at all but kinda boring
Some cool vibes in here and I like some of the heavy bass beats. A couple popular songs on here that I recognize that are good. Overall not really my jam and Im not interested in hearing more.
This is a good enough, Modest Mouse-adjacent, album. Not sure what it does to belong in the book though.
So I recall being into this album when it came out. First few tracks I’m thinking, fuck yea this still hits but after Take Me Out, this album became the listening variant of eating too many skittles, my ears puked a bit. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good at the jangle pop rock, they have some solid tracks but I they don’t change things up enough over the course of an album for me to digest a full 40 minutes of it. I happened to listen to The Strokes-Room on Fire just yesterday which I feel is the epitome of jangle rock so it’s clear to me that Franz Ferdinand are simply in a much lesser league than that. 3 stars
I remember hating ‘Take Me Out’ when it first came out for how annoying and overplayed it was, so there was no way I was giving this album/band a chance back then. A few years later, ‘Tonight’ came out and I absolutely loved it - I’d got over my pretentious teenage snobbery of hating anything popular by then. Listening to this album now, it feels like it’s missing something that ‘Tonight’ has for me. All the songs are good, but not really great. I’ll give it a few more listens to see if anything clicks. Highlights: This Fire, The Dark of the Matinée, Michael.
Good not great!
I couldn’t get into this album (aside from “Take Me Out”) back in the day, and the same holds true today. It’s catchy and fun, but you get everything you’re going to get from these songs on the first listen.
Kind of your standard indie rock album. I enjoyed listening to most of it. High points for me were Take Me Out, Matinée and This Fire.
Felt p indifferent to this, 6/10
I’ve always thought that the rest of take me out doesn’t do the intro bit justice, but it’s still a good song. The rest of the album is fine. Really like the premise behind cheating on you, but the song unfortunately is forgettable. 5/10
Very catchy, very clean sound. Vibes of the late 70's early 80's post punk era. A little bit twee but still very enjoyable. A lot of the songs get you moving & bopping about which is fun. I do feel like they lean too much on the music of the past so need to be downgraded for that. 3+ stars. Best song 'Take Me Out'.
Definitely some catchy songs. FF is one of those bands that I bypassed when they were at the height of their popularity. Take Me Out is a jam, at the time we were inundated with bands that were similar to, but not exactly like, the Strokes. This hits a bit different than the Strokes, but not enough to convince me I needed to hear it!
‘80’s alt rock
A few catchy songs
I used to love playing "Take Me Out" on the old Wii "Guitar Hero" back in the day. So many great chord progressions.
kolejny angolski zespol, typowa muzyka z FIFY. Te 1001 albumow to jest 900 rockowych albumow z anglii i kilka innych zeby nikt sie nie przyczepil. Gosciu ktory robil ta liste jest odklejony.
Maybe I OD'd on this genre back in the day but this didn't really excite me today.
Fun album! Couple classics on here but nothing particularly earth shattering.
For reasons still unknown to me, Take Me Out did not play the first time through the album. The rest played in order. When I circled back to listened to it, it didn’t elevate my opinion. I’ve heard the song a hundred times and it’s no longer all that exciting. I like This Fire. Well, at least the first time. Upon re-listen, I find the lyrics annoyingly repetitive.
You could think that the main reason for this album to be here is “Take Me Out”, but FZ’s debut album boasts quite a few more sure hits. Unfortunately I have this nagging feeling that Franz Ferdinand never performs to capacity. As if a lid prevented especially the choruses from delivering the power that so obviously dwells just underneath the surface. The extreme compression of Alex Kapranos’ vocals, recognizable as it may be, doesn’t exactly help with the problem either. It’s a shame. I really wanted to like more than I end up doing.
Good album, but all the songs sound the same!
Take Me Out // The Dark of the Matinée // 40’
# 208 : Good Album, its OK, not what I expected, some good tracks, Great sound, though everything sounds a bit too similar. would not buy this but I'd listen to it again. Favourite track : Take Me out
Partly varied pieces, then again unimaginative and recurring rhythms, good pleasing vocals. I would describe the album as pleasing post-punk.
Franz Ferdinand ‘Michael you're dancing like a beautiful dance whore’ I was interested to listen to this again after not having listened to it since the heady days of 04-06. I did listen to it a lot back then but aside from the big singles I can’t remember much of it. I do like the template of chugging rhythm guitar and driving bass with catchy riffs, but it isn’t always successful, ranging from great (Take Me Out) to very good (Matinee, Darts of Pleasure, Michael) to the most of the rest, which is fine but ultimately a bit repetitive and somewhat forgettable. There are some little additions of texture, the piano/organ on Auf Achse and the melodica on 40’. I wish there was a little more of that throughout, just to add a little more interest and colour. Jacqueline - establishes the template, but on repeat listens one of the weaker tracks. Tell Her Tonight - Again one of the weaker tracks, I didn’t like this one much actually Take Me Out - This still stands up as a great great indie rock pop song and does tower above the rest of the album. The Dark of the Matinee - This has stood up well too, a good indie pop song. Aug Achse - I like the piano/organ here, it adds a slightly different texture which is nice, although I’m not as keen on the song in general Cheating on you - this is pretty forgettable and another of the weaker tracks. This Fire - Strays a bit close to Take Me Out for me Darts of Pleasure - Another strong track, despite the overly affected German at the end. Michael - I’ve always liked this one, it’s barely controlled frenzy works well with the lyric and in comparison to some of the studied weaker songs on the rest of the album. Come on Home & 40’ - some nice moments but they both passed me by, I struggled to distinguish them despite listening to the album 3 times in a row. Overall it’s fine indie pop music, there’s no stinkers, but aside from one great song and a few other good ones it does feel a bit samey and limited. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Take me out is an all timer, Jacqueline and a couple other songs were good but not my fave album ever
its like slightly worse artic monkeys
I think this was mostly fine, but the songs sounded a little too samey to me.
This was ok
This was mostly inoffensive and occasionally fun.
Hitit on tutut karaokebiisit! Muutenhan tää on aika tasapaksu. Ei huono mutta tasapaksu. 3/5
Tää oli kova juttu vielä 10 vuotta sitten, mutta nykyään tuntuu vähän lattealta. Take me out toki ihan bangeri edelleen. 3/5
Pop-rockia, ihan hyvin soitettuna. Ansaitseeko olla listalla, sitä en tiedä. 3/5
Distinctive sound, but only one good track
I like!
3.5.
More Indie/Alt/ Pop music. All these bands sound the same to me. These guys are ok I guess if you like this type of stuff.
Ravie d'avoir eu l'occasion de me replonger dans cet album qui me renvoie directement vers mes années de fac ! Un bon album rock aux sonorités modernes, avec des titres indémodables (la structure de Take me out me bluffera toujours). Sentiment malheureusement mitigé par une sensation de redondance à l'écoute d'autres titres...
Started strong, Take Me Out is legendary, the rest is okay.
I love Take Me Out and This Fire (though I do live the This fffire version more), but the rest I find rather lackluster. It feels quite repetitive and lacks the standout interesting vocals and musical choices (like the tempo change in Take Me Out for example) that make those two standouts so strong. They genuinely make the rest of the album feel weaker because they show you that they could be doing more interesting things each time than they are. At the very least, I think it was a mistake to have them so early instead of treating them like show stopping finales.
"Take Me Out" is the single and stand out track.
Pretty good overall - kind of reminds me of a big blend of arctic monkeys, killers, and maybe two door cinema club a little? Either way, its solid and I could see myself coming back to this at some point as an entire album listen instead of just listening to Take Me Out.
I know the hit from this record. “Take me out”. I think I thought this modest mouse. And now that I have heard the hit. Every song after sounds like the hit. Really digging “this fire”. This album reminds me of the British new wave punk stuff in the 80s. Stripped back, more refined and juts rock and roll.
Definitely has a distinctive sound to the album. ‘Take me Out’ is definitively a great song.
A classic and simple indie album. Obviously take me out is the highlight but it is just a standard fun indie album. I don't think it is really special but I have listened to this album a long time now so clearly does the right thing. In the upper middle of the road just a nice 3/5. Stand Out Songs: Take Me Out The Dark of the Matinée This Fire
It was alright, don’t really remember much from it after listening to it
3 stars. meh
Synth offended Joseph
I remember the song Take Me Out but until now, didn't know who performed it. Franz Ferdinand is actually a group of Glasgow men, who named their band after the Archduke and a racehorse who shared the name. The band's strengths are in the guitars and drums, working together to play music you can stomp to. Lyrically, eh, no. Lines repeat endlessly, which I guess is fine for mindless dance music, but I'm unsatisfied.
I wasn't expecting much but this isn't bad. Some cool guitar work on several tracks.
Take Me Out was the only song on this album that I had heard before, and no wonder as none of the others match its quality or come anywhere close to doing so. If they had, this might have been a 4.
Maybe I need nostalgia but this didn’t do a lot for me. Liked some of the songs but I’ve already forgotten what it sounded like.
This album was my jam when I was 12/13 and then I found Wire... and Pere Ubu... still has some bangers and is still a solid album but doesn't quite have the bite of all the art punk bands they were influenced by... sorry Franz Ferdinand ur getting a 3...
Solid. At the time I felt just as I do now about it, some bangers but I get a bit bored by the end.
I only like one song in there, the rest were not super pleasant unfortunately
I remember listening to this album in college when it first came out and being fairly bored with the songs outside of the monster hit singles. This is still the case for me so many years later while doing my first re-listen for this project. Luckily this is a pretty short album at just under 39 minutes total, so I didn't get too cranky about it. Franz Ferdinand the band is at their best when they're cranking out slinky earworms like Take Me Out, This Fire, and The Dark of the Matinee. Are they an "album band," though? I don't think so; not on this debut anyway. I didn't find Franz Ferdinand the album particularly enjoyable as a whole, but I do enjoy the singles enough to give this 3 stars. Listening to FF the band takes me back to my favorite times in college during the early aughts, when life was simpler and my friends and I would listen to hipster indie while driving around to obtain a late-night Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch and Shamrock Shake for a midnight snack. Take me back... Interesting factoids from Wikipedia: n/a (This is the first album I have listened to on this journey that had a very boring Wiki page for the album. Nothing notable to include here) Standouts: Take Me Out, The Dark of the Matinee, This Fire
That's not my taste in musik. But ok
Guitar driven pop. Good album. Would be good driving album.
Take me the fuck out
Pap pop
3.5
Had this album in high school. Take Me Out is head and shoulders above the rest of the album
Franz Ferdinand (Franz Ferdinand, 2004): 3/5 Summary: First, the pros. The tracks all sound fairly different to one another, and for the most part are good pop compositions. However, the album feels a little incongruous or lost, like they band can't decide which instruments they want to sound consistently good. Sometimes it's the guitar riff, sometimes it's the vocal - but no matter the focus, all other instruments tend to get "downgraded" as a result. It's strange, really. I've never heard another album that does this. It's not quite convincing, but I'll give credit where it's due: the music is still pretty darn good. Jacqueline: A pretty, acoustic ballad, before a jarring bassline leads into a punk-esque breakdown at 45-50 seconds in. Cool guitar riff, if a little simplistic. The vocals (and indeed all the instruments) sound slightly muffled, adding to the punky feel. Even though the vocalist seems pretty good at his craft, the actual melody and lyrics are so uncatchy that it's a mystery as to why this was chosen as the album's opening track. This track didn't do much for me. Tell Her Tonight: Hmm, looks like that muffled production has continued into the second song. I hope this doesn't become a theme, because it's pretty distracting. The chorus is pretty good here. Slightly rockier than the previous track. Take Me Out: Immediately, the vocal distortion works better than in the first two tracks. The relatively clear percussion and right-channel guitar helps with this. Cool tempo change leading to an entirely different sounding song just 60 seconds into the song. The multi-vocal thing is very messy sounding (single-track vocals would work much better). Chorus is pretty catchy; outro is similarly strong. Best track so far. The Dark Of The Matinee: The intro is decent, and the vocal distortion seems to finally be absent. First time the vocals sound good, and they work well through self-harmonising(?) in the chorus. A solid track. Auf Achse: Simple and effective bassline that easily steals the spotlight. An energetic, almost frenetic (at times) track that doesn't quite manage to be catchy, but is still really engaging. I'm not a big fan of the percussion, which would sound pretty darn nifty if it went all-out. Cheating On You: See - this drumming is already noticeably the standout instrument. Unfortunately, nothing else really interests me. The riff is played so confidently that it's easy to miss the fact that it's... pretty terrible. This Fire: this fire is out of control i'm gonna burn this city burn this city this fire is out of control i'm gonna burn this city burn this city this fire is out of control i'm gonna burn this city burn this city this fire is out of control i'm gonna burn this city burn this city (tl;dr: chorus, which is meant to be the best part, is very repetitive) Darts Of Pleasure: Thickly-textured. High energy, and a good, decisive ending. This is a good track. Michael: Something about the vocal really stands out here. Lots of passion and an almost Elvis-like timbre that jells well with the heavy indie-punk-rock backing. Great track - probably the strongest on the album. Come On Home: C'mon Franz Ferdinand, why'd you have to hold off on genuinely fun vocals until the final few tracks? Also, the first track to have a noticeably good chord progression. Me likey. 40': A jangly, country-sounding guitar riff steals the spotlight here, cutting its way into the post-chorus amidst smooth, slightly timid singing. I particularly enjoyed the sudden juxtaposition between the lighter and heavier textures.
