Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Surprisingly a fun electronic/dance album. Lots of energy, but felt a bit darker than other electronic albums I've listened to. However, can still get very repetitive throughout. I personally feel like this would be a lot more enjoyable on a night out with a large group, rather than listening alone like I did. "Their Law" and "Poison" my favourite tracks.
I don't get the hype, but then I'm starting to think I don't really get electronic music
Not heard this album before, although I of course know some of the songs. A sign of greater things to come.
not the biggest fan, but wakes you up in the morning
It’s an album I’ve tried to love for a long time. It’s got some great memories in places, but for the most part it still just sounds like a hell of a racket to me. I want to like it more than I actually do
As always, I don't love electronic music because I can't sing along. This particular album doesn't have a lot of lyrics, but it's okay because I just keep yelling out "Firestarter!" and "Breathe with me!" anyway.
Dark, intense, gritty, throttling, deeply cool. The energy of these songs is pretty great. I could see listening to it to power through a project. That said, I get that this is meant to be clubby, but I as an old lady do not find breaking glass on a loop to be particularly entertaining. I also agree with the assessments that the album is simply too long. This is an interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here. Fave Songs: Voodoo People, Speedway, No Good (Start the Dance), Full Throttle, The Heat (The Energy)
These guys are full of piss and vinegar. In a good way for a couple of songs but not for a full album. At least not in the daylight. I'm being generous today.
This wasn't as great as I remembered, it was much longer too. Poison and No Good are absolutely epic though.
I'm so jilted, these sound like regular beats to me
Better than I thought it would be considering the album cover. Good for listening to while getting work done.
I actually kinda liked it. I wouldn't go back and listen again, but it was kind of fun. I liked the song 'No Good'.
its a nice album but it has to grow on you, for me it starts out as a quite harsh drum and bass album but slowly you get into the flow and then it becomes really nice
Pros: - Prodigy has such a cool sound. They are serious groundbreakers. - Yea, let's take glass smashing and make it a rhythmic element. Yea! - Oddly enough, it's great background music. - Drum n Bass is just a great discovery in music. Cons: Misc: - Their follow up album to this, "The Fat of the Land" is also very good, and contains probably their biggest hit, "Smack My Bitch Up".
Genre defining british techno rave music. Takes clear inspiration from industrial rock of the time. Voodoo People is pretty iconic, and I really liked the flute loop and what sounded like morse code blips on 3 Kilos. Some great music, but I felt a little silly listening to it at 9pm on a Thursday in my pajamas. This is really meant for you to be moving to. With my full focus on it, the record started to feel a little long and repetitive. 3.5.
Not really my bag, but prodigy brought electronic music to the suburbs.
I just don't get The Prodigy. Is it a dance thing? A drug thing? Is it all an elaborate joke? Surely those super cheesy "breaking glass" percussion effects aren't unironic? The even-cheesier "villainous laughter"? I wouldn't be surprised if barks and moos showed up. But then for a minute from time to time, it would all come together and I'd be like, now that's tight.
Thanks to the samples, most of this album starts out positively evilly. The formula, a well-executed one I'm a bit saddened by, is to arc from there to a more straightforward party mood. That means most tracks feel padded at the back for dancing over album listening, but the spots where synths and drums are joined are second to none. This project continues to remind me that I enjoy techno.
probably bad but idk Not as bad as all that! in a certain mood its exactly what i want
"Music for the Jilted Generation" is a frenetic record released by the heavy hitters of the breakbeat techno. With a darker tone than their predecessor, it's a mix of 13 songs that elevate electronic music to a even more hardcore position. "No Good (Start the Dance)" is one of the ultimate classics of the 1990s raves.
I liked hearing those songs from Hackers. It just got repetitive.
I've never heard this album befroe, but there's a bunch of songs on it I know. Because I've listened to the Hackers movie soundtrack a lot, and there's at least two songs on here that are on that soundtrack. I don't listen to a lot of dance/electronic music, but when I do, this is the style I gravitate to. You can have it on while working and since there aren't any lyrics, it's not distracting and can sometimes help get you into a flow state. But it's also not something I'm going to put on extreemly often. At times it's what I'm looking for, but not something that would work all of the time.
Music For The Jilted Generation isn't my thing, I'm into more Eurotrance style house and dance than this, don't get me wrong, it has its moments and has great energy and No Good is an insane song, might get it into 3/5 territory because I respect it, just don't like it all.
Probably not an album best appreciated sat at my desk working, but quite enjoyed it. Felt that it took a while to get going - I wasn't a huge fan of Break and Enter, and Their Law wasn't much better, but it does pick up through that middle section. There is no need for this to be so long, more than an hour is very rarely necessary, particularly when it's relatively intense music like this. I expect there should be another Prodigy album on this list, which will be better than this? Just scrapes a 3/5.
Were they the first rave ‘band’ - full length albums, tours etc?
Didn’t get to finish the album but this was pretty awesome. Definitely upped the energy on the morning commute.
I actually liked this way more than I thought I would. It dragged in the middle for me a bit but started out hot and finished strong.
meh
Not their most interesting
Got a lot of things done listening to this album
Eigentlich ziemlich billig.
Electronica. Definitely interesting. Instrumentals were unique. I am undecided about it.
It does get it's groove and pacing... and towards the end of the album, it finds an energetic vibe that pleasantly isn't so much IN YOUR FACE. A little too much of the album is hyper and seems poised for a siren alarm sound as part of its music. Still pretty interesting and enjoyable listen.
This has some bangers on it and is clearly a very important album, but 80 minutes of breakbeat is just a bit too much for me
Asså det är ju fett som fan. Inte lika fett som Fat of the Land men svårt att va
3.5
few songs on here that i liked, but majority of it i didnt. felt very early 2000s tweaker club music
Okay that is a bit too much for me. In a club when I was in my 20’s it wasn’t even my style, but I could have enjoyed it for a night. Beats and random noises, the occasional guitars, voices, and more beats.
Solid instrumental rockish EDM
tiktok sound
Definitely different
Years ago while living with my best friend in a sketchy apartment we would play hours (HOURS) of an old racing game, Playstation Nascar I think. Often til dawn. Important stuff. His brother visited one weekend and joined our league/circuit/whatever and put on a Prodigy album while we played. I'd never listened to electronic music before but for whatever reason it was the absolutely perfect soundtrack to making virtual 200mph left turns for 3 hours straight before you inevitably crashed on the final lap. I guess what I'm saying is that I really want to play that game again right now. Judging this on what it is (as opposed to comparing it to what I guess I'd call a "normal" album?) it is kind of compelling. Hypnotic. Good to work to, especially if I want to stay awake. Sum: it's not something I can see putting on when I want to listen to *songs* because they're not really songs - more of an aggressive soundscape, but it works really well as a caffeine-substitute. Or additive. 7/10 3 stars
Not really my style but I can appreciate the rave vibes.
2.5/5 Not my genre Great song: Voodoo People
Hard classic techno beats that would be at home in a warehouse rave. I can smell this album and it wreaks of sweat and clove cigarettes
It's not a bad album by any stretch, but I enjoy Prodigy with vocals a lot more.
Not my style, but I can see why it was so influential.
Another that I have heard before but not since I was at college many years ago! Really enjoyed this. Kept me going through a shitty work day
I liked it better than most of Prodigies other stuff, because it was less noisy and had a cool 90s techno vibe. But overall it‘s not my kind of music.
Some good some bad
Curious and interesting, not actually my cup of tea, but the kind of album I like to hear when i´m doing something.
Fanade…
nice ideas, but quite long and repetitive songs
I was excited for this album because I really liked The Prodigy's first album. However, this album sounds much more generic in the present day, and lacks the cool hooks that populated the first album. It's not bad, but it doesn't really stand out from a lot of the techno mixes that are a dime a dozen on YouTube 3/5
The beginning was mostly good, the later minimal-isch techno I personally did not enjoy as much.
These songs were mostly enjoyable, and frankly fit quite well with my mood today. However, almost every one of these songs just goes on for too long.
A good electronic album from the 90s. Brought back memories from the time, ok for nostalgia but don't think I'd go back to it again.
MotA: Voodoo People "So, I've decided to take my work back underground to stop falling on the wrong hands"
Not really my type of music, but it is listenable. The influences this album and group had is unquestionable, and even big bands like Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails and Fear Factory would have sounded a lot different without the industrial electronic sounds of The Prodigy.
Really enjoyable album, you need to be in the right mood for it though. Definitely won’t be everyone’s cup of tea at all. Some absolute BANGERS on this one though!
Parts of this album sound like someone gave the Doof Warrior a band. I kinda feel like to fully enjoy this I need to either be in a slick, flashy 90s action movie or on E in a 90s German discotheque. Like, I get it, but it’s not for me.
Good but intense for the morning
Teetering on a 4. There's something about electro from bands that came out of the 90's that's just better.
voodoo people is a timeless banger
90s electronic/industrial breakbeat. KMFDM without the rock n' roll. vaguely reminds me of playing flash games on newgrounds
Feel like I needed to drop eighty tabs to get into this on a Tuesday morning. They have a certain sound that sets them apart from other electronic music.
I was surprised at this one. Honestly, the cover art had me a little nervous that it would be kind of hard and creepy sounding, but I didn’t mind it. It’s definitely 90s; not sure it would find a hold in today’s milieu.
false
This one's a mixed one. I've heard some of the songs before and liked them. It is also similar to some parst from Matrix soundtrack. However, some are just not that pleasant to listen to.
Techno album, mostly. But not too over the top. Decent.
In small doses this is cool, but for over an hour? Without drugs, that's a tall order.
Smack my bitch up
not my genre but head-bopping nonetheless
I winced at the cover image but wanted to give this a fair shot. Ultimately, it's just not for me (I don't really do EDM or electronica though so not exactly a surprise).
- the longer i listen it itches - some of those songs are kinda like tolerable - im not sure its not for me
Meh, just beats icl
Not for me, all I can think about is the Matrix reloaded video game.
It’s electronica. I understand why people like it. Just not my cup of tea.
1994. Combines a variety of genres, including electronic and breakbeat, with heavy basslines and energetic, aggressive beats.
Haven’t heard any Prodigy music. Good cover. No real instruments. Minimal vocals. I guess it is music you can dance to. Songs sound the same. Not that good. Two stars
Seems like many of the other 90s electronic albums. Not enough changes
I feel jilted.
Not my vibe
Surprised how little this did for me, considering I really enjoyed The Fat of the Land from these guys. I tried using this as background for work, like I would with stuff by Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada, but its too annoying for that. Very little positive to say, I didnt absolutely hate it but a struggle to sit through
I loved Fat of the Land, but this album did not age well.
I had a lot of fun at the rave we went to with Shane and Emily! Only problem is that right now it’s 11:00 on a Tuesday morning
I’m shocked at how boring this album was
Just not my cup of tea
Wasn’t on enough drugs to really enjoy this
I’m today years old to learn the prodigy is not for me
1. intro - 1 2. break - 2 3. lauu - 2 4. throtle - 2 5. vodoo - 1 6. poizon - 1 7. good - 1 8. love - 2 9. kiloz - 1 10. zky - 2 11. zting - 2
This wasn't bad. It is upbeat and fun. I do wish there were lyrics at times. Sometimes the songs drone on and on and I wish something different would happen Liked Songs: "Break & Enter" , "Full Throttle" , "Voodoo People" , "No Good (Start the Dance)" , "One Love" , "Speedway (Theme from Fastlane)"
I used to go to every show at that venue, because I knew she was there. She was the first person to ever come over to my apartment. She kisses were like fire. She put butterflies in my stomach every time I saw her. Then things dwindled, and she told me she would slow down. She was a bit of a relationship anarchist. That was okay! We would still kiss sometimes, we would still have conversations that ran deep into the night. She was a really good friend. Then one night, in the middle of a conversation, she said "I'm sorry." and I asked why, and she said "Because I'm not as into you as you are into me." I had already known that and put it in the back of my mind, but it was still a gut-punch to hear her say that outright. Things weren't the same after that. We didn't pay each other as much attention. She started bringing someone else to the venue. I saw her there tonight. She willfully admitted that she had been leading me on. Admitted she was a bad partner. I know there's nothing else she can do to make up for the pain she had caused, but still, I'm ashamed to admit that it still doesn't feel like enough. She's still there at every show, with her new gal pal. I used to go to those shows just to see her. Now I can't go at all. Because I'll see her. I found this record really boring, and it didn't entertain me enough to drown out how I've been feeling today.
Found myself bopping a few times, but man...not a big prodigy guy.
Not for me.
I bet this would be fun to dance to but it is a very specific type of record. It's not bad but there are really just a few circumstances where it would be good.
I’m not a fan of electronic music but I can understand the appeal
Should I want to stand in a field off my tits on ecstasy, this album would be perfect. As it turns out, I don’t. Thank God for “No Good (Start the Dance)”, my favourite song by The Prodigy. Also to “Break & Enter” and “3 Kilos” for making this bearable in a sea of too long, headache-inducing noise.
We got Fat of the Land less than 10 albums earlier, and much as I quite enjoyed it, I would have preferred a bit of a longer break before being handed Prodigy album number 2. This is too long and also feels like being an extra on a 90s sci-fi/computer hacking movie set in a dark basement. I like No Good (Start The Dance), Poison and bits of Voodoo People. Everything else, except 3 Kilos which I really enjoyed, was very, very trying. It's getting a 2 and should feel lucky I've been so generous. 2/5
1.5 stars It really just kept going on and on. Maybe with some drugs, strobes, flashing lights this would be amazing. But on a Tuesday morning getting ready for work, fuck you.
Boring, repetitious, monotonous, need I say more?
I learned that the iconic front man Keith Flint wasn't actually on this or the previoud album, except possibly as a dancer. It's not my genre at all, and I hated most of what they did when they were big around The Fat Of The Land, even though I gave that album a fairly solid 3/5. This one is a bit more raw even, and doesn't have much structure, which becomes a bit tedious after a while (unless you're high, maybe, which I'm not).
Once again surprised how boring EDM music is, and why there's so much of it in this project. At least the songs don't drone on for too long like they can on other albums in the genre, but it's so repetitive for such a long runtime. Some decent moments early on but drags by the 5th track
I like how there's a mix of genres like rock + electronic or hiphop + electronic. It's fun but not something I'd want to listen to. And most of the time it sounds like a hot mess. Also, I didn't know that that tiktok sound came from this album 😭😭
Probably an unpopular opinion but listening to this album made me want to punch a child. Or grind my teeth. Or both.
Gloomy EDM. Hair not purple enough for this.
I liked it to start, but liked it less and less as it went.
Got monotonous quickly
2/5 - A few tracks like Speedway are fun, but after awhile, my brain is numb to what's going on here.
I felt burned out at the end. Fat of the Land did a much better job. 5/10
I had moments where I was vibing with it, but mostly not.
mostly garbage
More interesting than other entries. It is somewhat repetitive and drags on at times. However, I found this to be a good representation of its genre. 7/10 [KEEP]
Nothing as memorable as the next album, but you can see the genesis.
I got The Fat of the Land early on in this project and probably overrated it. 80 minutes of hardcore electronica might be too intense for me. One song in and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to like at much as The Fat of the Land. I would not be able to listen to any section of the three songs I just listened to and place them with the correct title. Voodoo People is the highlight so far. That was the thing music was missing...car alarm noise. Speedway (Theme from Fastlane) could also be called Speedway (Theme from Matrix II: Highway Fight Scene). This album sucks and it goes on forever. Every techno album sounds like it is an audition for a spin class mix. I have to pay more attention to this album because at any moment it could be over and I've have no idea I was listening to a different album or different band entirely. 3 Kilos is the best song on the album. It's like techno-Shaft. Skylined is good too. The album ended on a high note, but it's too long, sounds too much the same and doesn't have any really memorable songs.
I appreciate I’m going to lose a lot of my already sparse credibility but I just don’t enjoy this sort of shit
It is undeniably well made and ahead of its time but man I can think of few contexts where I would enjoy listening to this. Simply not my thing
Some good songs, and plenty of mediocre songs. I think The Prodigy could make a 4 star album, but they seem more focused on making any album here.
Time locked. Repetitive. Tiringly dizzy and plodding, simultaneously. Loud and irritating. Mids.
Not my taste at all.
Electronic
This was so close to getting a 1 from me. I’m sure it was good for its time…
No fue de mi agrado
2/5
Astonishing we’re still getting these. The length puts this one at a 2.
I didn't mind the first song or even the second, but then it was just monotonous, high speed banging in my head. Couldn't finish it.
The thought of someone buying this CD in 1994 and sitting down to listen to it is extremely funny to me. I did finish this whole thing though.
Mind numbingly repetitive. Every song is about 75% too long. I really don't understand who is supposed to enjoy this but I presume some form of drugs are supposed to be involved. Damn you 1001.
Shattering plates as percussion lol
I think the one other prodigy album was plenty of prodigy
I want to rate it a 1.5 because it doesn’t deserve a 2 but it’s better than a 1. Unfortunately I don’t have that option so 2 it is for intrigue but music that lasts way too long and is far too repetitive.
78 minutes of psychedelic dance music was interesting but not entertaining. I can’t believe it was through kindness that they left two minutes of empty space on the cd.
I knew Prodigy would be on this list sooner or later. Glad to get it out of the way.
This is the 2nd album from The Prodigy I've been given for this listening project. Which begs the question: who did The Prodigy blow to get on this list?
Ne volim ovaj album, ne paše mi. Nema do Fat of the Land kad je o njemu riječ. 2/5, 4/10
Feels like it could be the soundtrack for a racing game/movie. Not really my vibe but it had some fun parts.
It's good electronic Euro-rave music, I like the beats, and I like the composition, but no matter how good it is, listening to rave music in the afternoon at home with no drugs is just not how this was intended to be listened to. I should be in a south london warehouse on a cocktail of drugs that will kill me by 29 hoping to catch the eye of the twink in fishnets. Still a great album, but just not the mood or timing for it.
No standouts
Electric club music. The only possible way this can be enjoyed is if you’re on LSD. Even then, it’s not worth it.
In a club, on drugs, in the mid-90s, in Britain, this sounded good. Does that make it actually good?
Not for me
Rave music which goes on for a bit too long
- Not for me - Unless I'm in the gym - All the songs pretty much sound the same
Tedious and offputting. Not the *worst* electronica I've head, but that's about as much praise as I can give it. I sort of liked "3 Kilos" with the flute loop. Saved it from being a 1.
No. 383/1001 Intro NR Break & Enter 2/5 Their Law 2/5 Full Throttle 2/5 Voodoo People 2/5 Speedway 2/5 The Heat 2/5 Poison 2/5 No Good 3/5 One Love 3/5 3 Kilos 3/5 Skylined 2/5 Claustrophobic Sting 1/5 Average: 2,17 Just not something I personally enjoyed.
2 is being kind. Easily could be a 1.
Anxiety inducing
Kuuntelin tosi pintapuolisesti kelaillen. Levoton, koliseva, konemainen. Ufomainen. 👽 Vois ehkä toimii jossain juostessa? Mut ei kyl mun kuppi teetä. Ei silti paskinkaan.
I liked it but it didn’t really grab me at all. Interesting that there were little to. I lyrics I don’t know how I never noticed that on their songs from this era before.
This is fine as far as electronics goes, I just don't especially enjoy it.
Well, well.. the Prodigy…always reminds me of some of the worst trips I had on various substances. Some songs are not bad, but I stopped doing drugs though…2 stars!
I wasn't in the mood of this techno/breakbeat album although I appreciate its freshness. It was also very long with over 70 minutes.
If I’m in a really bad mood I don’t get how people consider this music. If I’m in a good mood I realize not everything is meant for me and turn it off.
I enjoyed this way more than I expected to. Tragically, it is 78 minutes long and I cannot abide such things. 2.5, rounding up.
what a sonically harsh way to learn that I’m not the jilted generation
In a rave setting this would be a 5/5. As an album though it doesn't do it for me.
4 minutes into the first song and I can tell this isnt my style of music. Not bad, but not for me. We will see what happens. Music wasnt bad per se, just not my style at all. Not a fan
Not my music at all. I liked maybe one song, but one album? Way too much. 4 / 10
It’s a 2.9 — but I recognize songs like voodoo magic but unsure where from 2
Just does not interest me at all unfortunately
This band has some decent songs, but not on this album. Makes me wonder why this album was picked. Strange.
Some thrills (Poison which is a of a mission statement for the album) interrupt unrelenting banality. A bit of a one trick pony. Maybe you had to be there. I wasn't. And we are not. Trying to imagine just throwing this on. Perhaps that misses the point. Still - I feel like there is a great EP buried within the neverending beat. Walking on a snowy morning - not the ideal soundtrack. Happy it's over.
Tolerable background noise
This explains why so many people hate New Wave.
It has been a long time since I listened to "Music For The Jilted Generation" from start to finish. Both of my sons are huge fans, so a few years back, I was fairly familiar with the band, I didn't really have a choice! Re-visiting it now, my opinion remains unchanged: it’s just 'OK'. It lacks the immediate impact and shock of "The Fat Of The Land". On paper, it has all the elements I usually enjoy: it's loud, throbbing basslines, driving processed beats, and sharp electronic textures, but for some reason, they fail to spark. While it captivates others, it just doesn't excite or engage me. Ultimately, the album lacks the variety and surprise I expect from a band marketed as 'dangerous' and 'exciting'. After a few tracks, the novelty wears thin, and at 78 minutes, it is far too long to sustain my interest. It does, however, have a fantastic album cover! Two stars. 1 "Intro" (3/5) 2 "Break & Enter" (3/5) 3 "Their Law" (featuring Pop Will Eat Itself) (2/5) 4 "Full Throttle" (1/5) 5 "Voodoo People" (3/5) 6 "Speedway (Theme From Fastlane)" (3/5) 7 "The Heat (The Energy)" (2/5) 8 "Poison" (2/5) 9 "No Good (Start the Dance)" (4/5) 10 "One Love (Edit)" (2/5) 11 "The Narcotic Suite: 3 Kilos" (2/5) 12 "The Narcotic Suite: Skylined" (2/5) 13 "The Narcotic Suite: Claustrophobic Sting" (3/5) Total - 32 Sum - 2.46 212/1001 119/212 albums reviewed were new to me.
The sound of dial up internet for 70 odd minutes is not for me.
Ah, the Prodigy - the techno music of my youth. I have an album or two of theirs, but not this one, although I did recognize a few songs. Overall, this one was kinda meh for me - not as energetic or hooky as I remember some of their other music being. - Heard before? Not in its entirety. - Will I listen again? Not this album. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Not really, except to remind me to revisit some music I already have.
I didn’t know what to think here
Not one for driving tunes, bits of songs go on a bit too long for me
This just isn’t for me. Not even for background music as it is a little too chaotic.
Weird soundtrack to 3 ft of snow removal, bit I pushed through
I was brought up on Fat of the Land and hadn’t ever listened to this in full. Some heaters (Break and Enter, No Good, obvs Voodoo People) but also some shite in between. Probably won’t listen to it in full again
I’m sure the jilted generation enjoyed this a lot more than I did
Clattering drums. Whooping vocal loops. Gritty samples. Each component is jagged and demanding attention, not sharing the focus. Everything is too high in the mix. A tiring, tiresome listen
So The Fat Of The Land isn't what all The Prodigy is like? That's too bad.
Theoretically, Liam Howlett’s toughened-up breakbeats and rave-punk snarl should separate this from the anonymous 90s electronica pile. In practice, the edge mostly masks the bloat. “Their Law” slams plenty hard, with percussion sharp enough to draw blood, but its nearly seven-minute sprawl proves stamina isn’t the same as momentum. “3 Kilos” sways on a humid, tropical breeze that almost feels like fun until you realize you’re trapped in the loop-repeat loop-repeat loop. There’s a brutalist idea of dance music in here somewhere—less ecstasy, more homework—but the long haul feels longer than it’s worth.
not for me
Can see the groundbreaking nature of it but not melodic enough house for me.
The Prodigy are like the metal of electronic music. And as much as I love metal, this album just doesn't quite to it for me. I do love The Fat of the Land, that one has so much interesting stuff going on that makes it more diverse and overall enjoyable. This one is not only so much longer, but completely lacks the diversity and pacing that it needs. Just an hour and a quarter of pure, uncut hard breakbeat. It needs more breaks and softer moments, especially considering its length.
Not at all into this genre. But am loving this. No insight, just turns me on.
A bit too much for my poor brain!
very boring
Good for inducing a headache.
pass
I’d prefer not to
Voodoo People is a great song, and there were a couple other uptempo songs that made me wanna move. Every other song was midtempo and repetitive as hell.
I appreciate the never-ending, hard energy, and I’m sure this was very important for inspiring electronic acts I enjoy like Squarepusher, but I could use a change of pace here and there in some way, sound wise.
Eh. This one’s not for me
Some good, but not for me necessarily
This is not for me
I ought to be into this, but I am not. I fit the profile as an electronica-curious 90s kid. I get the role that they are supposed to have played in the evolution of the rave scene. But in practice, it feels kind of flat and tedious to me rather than dark or challenging. I think that to feel what this album is trying to make me feel, I would rather listen to NIN. They were a couple of moments. I enjoyed but to really love it. I think I would need to have been part of the scene.
Rave party, yes! Casual listening, NO!
If this is what the generation is listening to, I’d dump them too.
I need an album to speak to me again,..,,..it's been so long
Pleas... just give me something that makes me feel alive
Not really floating my boat not sure what it’s about maybe I’m missing something.
It’s no Fat of the Land I really like Voodoo People though
It's electronic, but more like for a rave. Not for me.
This is the album that doesn't end. Yes, it goes on and on, my friend. I like the two popular songs that The Prodigy has, but this album was a little bit meh. I think I enjoyed that kind of music a bit more when I was younger, but now it's just a bit too repetitive and there are just sounds here and there. Voodoo People is good, but that's pretty much it. Overall, a bit meh-feeling.
I remember The Prodigy blowing up in the 90s with Firestarter, Breathe, and the funny, but controversial, Smack My B**ch Up. As singles on MTV, I could enjoy their music about once every couple of days. After listening to The Prodigy’s Music For A Jilted Generation, I’ve discovered it’s not my generation. The Prodigy described their music as electronic punk and I think that’s an apt description. This album didn’t have the songs I remember from MTV, but it was an important album at the time in the United Kingdom and for rave music. Around this time in the 90s, the U.K. passed a law called The Criminal Justice Act, which was supposed to help stop all the illegal, unlicensed raves tin that country. The Prodigy had been looked at as being a part of that scene. Music For a Jilted Generation was written as a response to the new law, which can clearly be heard in the song, Their Law, as the refrain “F**k ‘em and their law” can be heard throughout. I like that, but later The Prodigy kind of backed away from their rabblerousing ways, saying the album wasn’t meant to be a political statement. That's not punk rock. So, what about the music? You know me, I love a good song you can dance to. These songs sound more like what you’d listen to if you were on methamphetamines. Most of the music just made me anxious and feel jumpy. I’m just not a rave guy, I guess. There were four singles released off the album, and I recognized one of them called, One Love. I’m sure I heard a couple of the others, but I wasn’t a raver in those days, so they could have slipped past me. If you like The Prodigy’s other stuff or you’re a raver from way back, I’m sure this album is an all-timer for you. As for me, I could have made it two lifetimes without hearing this frenetic, jumble of beats and weird sounds.
Too heavy
Not for me, dog
Listening to this while working, and found it annoying with its repetition and even distracting.
I didn't think I would enjoy this album, not really when I started listening to it. But, as the songs went on, I have enjoyed it more and more and, to be honest, I don't think it's bad at all. This is not an album I would eventually want to listen to, but I (kind of) liked it. It's basic in some aspects with some interesting textures sometimes; some songs are more atmospheric, but without losing the very industrial essence and aggressive beats that give this album some sonic consistency and power (even if it lacks of being more interesting to make me want to listen to the more than an hour that it consists of again). So, even if it's far from being something good for me to really like it, I won't say it's bad. But it's not my style at all, for sure.
I'm sure this was cool if you were there
I really like most of The Fat of the Land, but this Prodigy album was a pretty uninteresting slog to get through. A few good moments but not too impressed. 2/5
This was not a special electronic album. Apart from the Speedway song, it seemed to lack the eagerness to really speak to me.
MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAt
Uhh... it's fine I guess. I'm sure this would hit if I took some molly in a race at an anime convention, but instead I listened to maybe half the album sober in my living room. Sounds nice, I can see how someone would like this, I'm just not even close to being the target audience for it. Cool album cover tho.
One of the most tedious albums I’ve ever heard. Not really bad per se, but man is it flirting with a 1.
Not sure this one aged well at all!
I thought I would like this. There are several Prodigy songs I like but it turns out they are grim the next album. This was proper mid 90s rave music. It went on and on and didn't do anything positive for me.
First time listening to this album. I like it, but maybe not a keeper
Like Fat of Land better. Dance, background music.
2.5 - some songs were interesting.
Not the hugest fan of electronic music but this did feature a song on a mixtape made for me in '94!
In a nutshell: go hard and don't go home. Have I entered The Matrix? I feel like I've been pulled deep into an alternative space full of pleather clad humanoids. And this album is the boring four-to-the-floor breakbeat filled soundtrack. What it lacks in backbeat diversity makes up for in attitude and skill (performing this live would be a mammoth task). PS. spot the vocal grabs from films. Overall: 3/10
Even at the time of its release I remember this felt a little too aggro, techno music for mosh pits. Like if you had it on in the car, you’d be 20% more likely to get in an accident or road rage incident. :D Earlier I liked “Out of Space” a bunch - peppy, but fun. This is just A LOT of the same tone. Which might’ve worked for me a few years earlier but I had aged out of this vibe. I see Fat of the Land is also on here and cmon guys.
I love electronic music but this isn’t their best album and sounds quite dated now.
Not for me
Sooooo fucking long. Eugh
I wouldn’t call the album itself bad as much as the listening experience. Tough to just sit down and listen to looping electronic music over and over for almost an hour and a half. So the album itself was okay, though it’s such a generic sound now.
I like it fine, but doesn't deserve to be on this list especially considering 'The Fat of the Land' is also on here and is catchier and shorter.
2.5
More doof doof than Fat of the land which is much more my speed. Find it really hard to get into anything as doofy as this
Not my favorite... a little repetitive.
my older brother was so into Prodigy when we were growing up. he would play their album in his car on the way to school and in his car on the way home from school and from his stereo when we were at home. it was the next album though "Fat of the Land" that I've heard a billion times. this one came out before, but the sound is very consistent between the two. that is to say familiar in a familial way but not something I seek out for myself generally. it's really danc-y though. I think I had forgotten that. also they wear more eyeliner than I do
This was alright. Lost its impact quickly on me though. I can see why it was lauded in the mid 90s perhaps, but that didn’t make my experience any better.
Electropunk album from The Prodigy hits harder than a workout. I felt I needed strobe lights to really appreciate this and that would make for the perfect tiring listen. For all its energy there is a lot of repetition with the genre which I am not that fond of, but this album is a good take on it.
Published 3 years befor The Fat of the Land and they sound maybe not totally different but could be another band on this one. The album is ok but a long way from what The Fat of the Land
Can’t say electronica is in my wheel house. Bit repetitive and overly long, but when I viewed as soundtrack to a Bourne movie or video game it sort of bopped along. 2.5 Star
Another The Prodigy album. It's alright, but Fat of the Land was better.
This was pretty popular in its day, for sure. But - it wasn't my thing then, and not now either. I'll grant you that this would probably be much more fun with lasers and beers at a club, rather than in my car on the way to work.
I enjoyed it more than Fat of the Land and Fatboy Slim's albums on this list. But its still not quite my preferred genre of electronic music.
Great songs for a background music for workout. Some ideas here and there, but it's lengthy and tiring. Could be shortened. As an album, I don't see much. Guess I'm not part of the jilted generation, definetly is not for me.
Not my thing
Just the same thing going over and over again for 7 minutes straight. I just don't get Electronic music that's intended for dancing; It's insanely repetitive, I'm sure it sounds great live but I just can't get with it on the studio version.
This one grew on me a little bit the further I got into it, but I still think I liked the other Prodigy album better. Some of these songs were so repetitive that they got a little annoying. Probably would have been more tolerable if I had been listening to it in the background at work. I got behind and am trying to catch up so I’m a little more focused on the music today. 2.25 stars, I’m not quite ready to round up to 3.
Why is it so hard to only include certain band's best albums here? If this was The Fat of the Land, it would be a 4.
Insoportable
Big oof. Not the worst record I've heard so far out of the 1001 but 47 seconds into track 2 I was waiting for it to be over. The lowest of 2s
Guess I wasn't jilted 'cuz this ain't fer me.
This band has always been a tough one for me. Part rave, part background music for video games.
Music to help me get through my workout a little faster. Other than that…rave on I guess.
Just because this genre of music existed does not mean it belongs in this little time capsule. You cannot convince me this is good
Sounds cool / interesting at moments. But no way I can do an hour + of this. Gotta be on some good drugs to get through this. Also, you think Yungblood is Keith flints (RIP) child?
My knowledge of The Prodigy starts and stops with Firestarter, Breathe, and Smack My Bitch Up... none of which are on this album. I'm sure some of these tracks were awesome at a club or rave back in the day. Doesn't hit the same while driving to work in the morning... 2.5/5
i used to be way more into scene EDM, from its early 90's roots til the 2000's. today its less interesting but still memorable in many ways. Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, all that stuff with this in there. the technology to improve the music at this time was encouraged and moving at the speed of light. what i can appreciate is that it is a genre built around the experience of live music and moving to beats that allow the mind to wander and flow. the festivals that these groups created are still around and thriving by evolution. something new was always the goal of a new record. this is pret great for 94. def ahead of its time in a lot of ways. it was a simpler time and shows how far things have come today in 2025. Full Throttle shows the energy of the record and how this atmosphere was at the time. not for everyone, but still fun. solid 2/5
Over an hour and 15 mins..... yeah we'll see if that's worth it for me. OMFG it's ELECTRONICA. I was NOT expecting that. I was expecting like... metal or like.... post punk or something. not the sounds of the camp from Tarzan. This is definitely not my cup of tea lmao. It all just sounds like the soundtrack from a cheesy action movie to me. I enjoy it a lot more when there's singing. All the songs are just soooo long though. 8 mins of the same thing over and over will never be my choice. I can't imagine anyone sitting down to listen to this unironically. I feel like I'm in a fast and furious film or like I should be finding my target in a dark Berlin club or like I'm hacking into the mainframe right now. It's definitely good for what it is, I just don't think I like what it is.
This is techno. Not really my thing
didn't like it
1/5
Ultimately this is pretty repetitive and uninspiring. The other prodigy album I had had a lead singer and I missed him.
They came up with 3 seconds worth of music and then played it for 6 minutes. This is music for people in basement bars with no AC and at least one time, not ironically, said stick it to the man
It's good music, but absolutely not for me.
Unique. Interesting. Groundbreaking. Deserving of many accolades. None of these should be used to describe this album. Even by 1994 rave standards this is just ok. Also too long.
Kind of droned on to me. Last song was best
When I was a kid, I LOVED the Prodigy. Fat of the Land was a seminal album for me growing up and so of course I rushed out to get their other albums and to say I was disappointed was a vast understatement. This is still true, this album was a few years before my time and I wasn’t out my face chewing door frames in a sweaty club so maybe that’s why I don’t get it. If this is the only representation from The Prodigy in this list, then it’s the wrong choice. Their Law, Voodoo People and Poison still stand the test of time, the rest however, is not very good.
It was a 2 today. Could be a 3 or 4 another day
Just not my style. Very busy and dischordant.
Feels very very dated. I thought I may like this but it just didn't do anything for me.
2/5
2/5
Break beats
Muzak
As I’ve said of other albums, and probably will say again, this is the type of electronica that’s context-dependent - probably fun to dance to, but not something that I find really enjoyable on its own. Favorite: Speedway 2.5
Kinda....hmmm. Like, I LOVED The Land of the Fat when it came out, but this album is just kinda boring. I'm not really sure this one is really for me. I think I kinda phased out of 90s EDM type stuff. Fine, not offensive, but really little on here grabbed my attention. Cool flute hook in 3 Kilos.
I’m sure it’s great in a club. I don’t live in a club.
I like some electronic music...but I can't stand this. Some parts aren't bad (No Good was decent). It gets a star for being mentioned in Gunnerkrigg Court however (even if Fat of the Land is better)
Boop beep boob peep music. Absolutely fine in background
I really thought Prodigy would have better songs than this
I figured I might need to crank this one to fully appreciate it. I turned it down.
The first few songs I kind of liked, the rest not so much. The baby crying one at the end was pretty funny.
I quite enjoy the first few tracks. Then…it keeps going… 2/5
I was there when the prodigy came to prominence and I didn't really get it then, and I still dont. This entire album is pretty repetitive and monotonous. You really could not tell one song from the other. If i compare it to something like Leftfield - Leftism, that still sounds fresh and unique while this sounds dated. Halfway through and I am bored out of my head from listening to this. The second half was slightly better...but only slightly
Seems like you need to be on molly.
Why did I recognize a song from tiktok…so brainrotted. Anyways, I can totally imagine the goth kids from South Park and katya bumping to this. It ain’t for me, but I understand ita appeal
Not unpleasant to listen to but not a lot to take with you either, Music for the Jilted Generation is filled with songs that ride their riffs for far too long. Now the songs often go on journeys around these riffs, but it's as if they're constructed to be the way they are, rather than orchestrated. There's a lot of industrial sounding percussion and abrasive synthesized sounds. This feels like an album that requires close, active listening to be rewarding. Maybe I'll end up revisiting this, but it didn't ever really call to me.
Gotta be pretty groundbreaking for its time, right? But awfully abrasive and downright unpleasant way too often.
