Reviews (page 4 of 13)
The Bridge Over Troubled Water album is special because it represents Simon & Garfunkel at the peak of their creative powers while also marking the duo’s final studio album together, making it both a creative high point and a bittersweet farewell. I've had this record on vinyl since I started collecting records way back in my freshman year of college. I remember loving it then and I still do today. No mystery why, as the themes of love, friendship, and perseverance feel timeless. Standouts for me are “Cecilia” and the very nostalgic classic, “The Only Living Boy in New York.”
In the age of DAWs and smartphone studios, music created using physical, analog tools and techniques seems so archaic and cumbersome by comparison. Bridge Over Troubled Water was meticulously engineered and crafted before those convenient, time-saving innovations, and Roy Halee was the mastermind behind most of that sonic wizardry. He conjured intriguing, mysterious dynamics from knobs and dials and microphone arrays on all of Simon and Garfunkel’s records during their five album affair over as many years. His efforts created an immersive and expansive soundscape that carved out ample space for the strength of their vocal performances to shine through. To exemplify the trios dedication to novel recording techniques — and subsequently to the unique sonic qualities those efforts produce — the enormous, delayed gated reverb that trails the snare on the chorus of ‘The Boxer’ (a definitive aspect of one of their biggest songs) was famously recorded in an open Columbia Studios elevator shaft, simultaneously tracked alongside the rest of the band in a nearby studio, connected by cables snaking down the hallway. On previous albums there are notable inclusions of audio Art recorded with portable equipment while talking to and interviewing strangers — quirky, real-life moments that imbue the songs and records with an ethereal quality. This technique brought the outside world into the studio, and would be further employed and developed by artists that followed. We are now familiar with many examples of this across all genres of music — movie quotes, answering machines and voice memos, elaborate skits, and ambient environmental field recordings are commonplace today, but this was a novel, nascent innovation at the time. Despite the success of their collaboration, Paul and Art were already on the outs and set to break up when this record was released in 1970. The album’s last track ‘Song for the Asking’ is an on-the-nose ending, the final song on their final album — two friends book-ending an immensely successful creative and commercial partnership with dignity and grace. IMO this is not the greatest Simon and Garfunkel record. They had a legendary run of albums from ’66-’69 included Sounds of Silence, Parsley Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme, The Graduate OST, and Bookends, of which my favorites are Bookends and PSR&T. Those two records found the duo at their most creative and exploratory as they formed their definitive sound that’s on full, effortless display on Bridge. And while the songwriting and vocals are impressive in their own right, the duos musicianship was amplified by a crucial partnership with members of The Wrecking Crew. This legendary collection of musicians literally played on every consequential album during their reign in the 60s and 70s, and they were essential to the sound of all five Simon and Garfunkel records. Their origin as a backing band is important to note here, as they started as Phil Spector’s band and helped him create what would be coined as the “wall of sound” — an approach that stacked many instruments on top of each other, replicating chords, melodies, and rhythms that propelled even mediocre songs toward infectious grooviness. This approach is palpable on all five of Paul and Art’s records. When you incorporate Paul Simon’s fascination with the rhythmic and sonic qualities of world music, what results is a bold, adventurous execution of pop music that feels timelessly fresh.
The most solid 5 I've had on this list so far. Everything just works, and the songwriting is off the charts. I will never understand how “So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright” fits in with the rest of the album, but everything else is incredible.
This was one of my fist albums that I got (well cassette) when I was about 13 so has a special meaning. I think The Boxer is my favorite with Cecilia a close 2nd.
I'm so white.
I feel like it should be a 4 but then you hear the Boxer and Cecilia and realize it really is a 5.
classic
Solid 5 - beautiful. The bonus of Art Garfunkel’s moustache on the cover photo just adds to the experience.
Maybe a 4 purely music wise but for me it’s 100% 5/5
There are a lot of memories tied to this album. My English teacher used to make me listen to songs from this album and my parents used to play this in the car. Bridge Over Under Troubled Water never fails to pull on my heartstrings. Without a doubt my favourite overall Simon & Garfunkel album (edging out Bookends). That being said, I think my dislike of Keeping The Customer Satisfied and other songs knock down the rating of the album by a little. 8.9
A classic, beautiful in many parts.
This is fantastic omg
OH MY GOOOOOODDD i love this album. i already love simon and garfunkel but this is for sure their best. i've played it many times in the background while i work or write or paint, some of these songs are permanently ingrained in my life at this point. beautiful, gentle, comforting. it's helped me through a lot.
one of my favorite albums
Love!! Grew up on this record. One of my dad’s favorites.
Solid album
A beautiful album, and no doubt an enduring classic. This one was in my parent’s collection, and got steady playtime. Most definitely a part of my musical rearing. Odd that these lads were on the verge of their breakup when this one dropped. Can’t we all just get along?
My wife’s favorite album is an all time classic
The only song on this album that isn't nearly perfect is Baby Driver.
9.3/10. Enjoyed it all the way through. Lots of songs made the playlist.
Great album, and a staple of any family album collection in the 70’s. Songs like “The Boxer”, ElCondor Pasa, and several others were on regular rotation on Radio and in pop culture. My normal barometer for a full 5 is I have to almost prefer a full play through vs single tracks. Not quite the case here but it’s so steeped with classics, had so much impact, and one of the most iconic album covers of the period that I’ll round up for sure. The music, instrumentation and harmonies are unique and timeless. 4.5/5
Timeless sounds and timeless memories associated with this one. Ironically I never thought the ubiquitous title track was the strongest, but the whole album is stocked with really good songs. It sounds as fresh today as it did in 1970. Probably sits between a 4 and 5 for me, but rating up due to legacy.
Another reviewer pointed out a mustache that appears on Art if you put your thumb on Paul's face on the album cover... and it may now be my favorite thing about this album. Ha! Not really but I love it so much. This is a tough one for me. It obvi has a strong 4 rating as its floor but question is whether it is a 5-banger. I was tilting more towards 4 but after revisiting it is hard to deny a 5. there are five really great songs that I enjoy quite a bit (title track may actually be my least favorite of the bunch). I am giving this a reluctant 5 because I think it deserves it even if it doesn't exactly hit for me. 4.25/5
I don't need to listen to this album (for the 5 millionth time) to give it 5 stars. Every song is a winner. 5⭐️ 5⭐️ 5⭐️
banger after banger
a lifelong favorite and simon & garfunkel's magnum opus
I know. Having slammed too many Neil young and Radiohead albums here we another contender for most over represented artist in Paul Simon. Unlike the other two Paul Simon is a prodigious talent. (The others are talented but Simon ranks nearly with Dylan and McCartney.) But you only need two Simon and garfunkels. The first one and this one. This is magnificent. And if the title track doesn’t move you check your pulse. Simons song. Garfunkel’s voice. Yet the rest of it is magnificent too. They were never better and the dissolution of their partnership probably happened at the right time.
noice
Great, no song is like the others but all are the same quality
A great album.
More Simon, Less Garfunkel.
Great album. Solid start to finish.
This is so much better than the herby album. It's also growing on me, so I think this is getting top marks.
Lyrically dense folk rock, sounds like you could it between a renaissance fair and a nursery rhyme. It's soothing, yet full of more detailed instruments than you initially here at face value. The best song here is The Boxer, but I also enjoyed El Condor Pasa (If I Could), Baby Driver, and Bridge Over Troubled Water. Easy to enjoy this when my wife also loves it.
A++++ feels.
Flawless
Another instant 5-stars for me. Some of the greatest songs ever recorded in this one. And I've finally began to appreciate 'The Only Living Boy in New York'.
Simply one of the greatest albums of all time. There are a handful of EP’s and just a few albums that I can playback in my head from start to finish - this is one of them. Every song is uniquely memorable, no skips at all. It’s a damn shame these two had a falling out, because this record is at the top of the evidence pile for a case to be made the S&G were the greatest duo ever.
No complaints here.
A very good album from the duo
I love the bittersweet feeling of this album. You can feel that the duo's relationship was really falling apart but for all the melancholic vibe this album has, there's still enough of their trademark folk/pop gems to make it seem like everything's gonna be alright. The Only Boy Living in New York is an absolute masterpiece in my book, one of the best song of all-time. Just for that one alone I think it deserves its 5 stars but the whole album is great in a slightly chaotic way.
this generator just knows me so well insane album which seems to pull influences from everywhere to create something unique glad to hear they reconciled recently too. never too late best song: the only living boy in new york worst song: n/a
I've owned this album, and I loved it then and still do. So many great songs. Easy vote.
So Long, Frank Lloyd Wrigh o el final con Song for the asking son delicadas y brillantes. Disco esencial e imprescindible, si no te gusta es que no tienes corazón ni sentido musical. Otros discos de 1970: The Beatles- Let it be, Paul McCartney-McCartney, George Harrison- All Things Must Pass, John Lennon- John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, LED ZEPPELIN-III, THE KINKS- Lola versus Powerman and the moneygoround, VAN MORRISON - Moondance, THE STOOGES - Fun house, THE DOORS - Morrison hotel, NEIL YOUNG - After the gold rush, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - Loaded, BADFINGER - No dice, GEORGE HARRISON - All things must pass, FLAMIN' GROOVIES - Flamingo, IKE & TINA TURNER - Come together, ERIC BURDON & WAR - The Black-Man's Burdon, MC5 - Back in the USA, DAVID BOWIE - The man who sold the world, WILLIE DIXON - I am the blues, FLYING BURRITO BROS - Burrito Deluxe, SANTANA- Abraxas, Miles Davis- Bitches brew, SIXTO RODRIGUEZ- Cold fact, THE SOFT MACHINE -III, DEREK AND THE DOMINOS- Layla and other assorted love songs, JJ PERREY- Moog Indigo, Carpenters- Close to you, SPIRIT- Twelve dreams or Dr. Sardonicus, DEEP PRUPLE- In rock, THE WHO- Live at Leeds, Credence Clearwater Revival- Cosmo's factory y Pendulum... y debuts de Black Sabbath (además de Paranoid),Elton John, Stephen Stills y Kraftwerk.
Not a bad one in the bunch. Excellent album.
An all-timer for me. I remember driving back from a 10-day silent meditation retreat in the mountains and it was the first album I listened to in 10 days and I was just bawling at how incredible it is. Meditation does funny things to a lad
LP
The last time I reviewed a Simon & Garfunkel album, It was PARSLEY, SAGE,ROSEMARY & THYME, and I gave it a short review and a 3. Simply: as much as I appreciated the work they put into their orchestrations, I didn't think the music was any much more than just fine. Maybe it was just a bit too folk for my taste; I didn't go back and check that album for this review. Now, I also said at the end of the album that I'd probably like their other ones more. So, did I? I have no idea what changed in the intervening four years between that album and this, but goodness. Goodness. This album is actually incredible. Beautiful in some parts, like with the title track; fun in others, like with "Baby Driver"... Mostly, though, it's pretty beautiful. Jus', goodness me. And, like, besides these songs just being written and arranged amazingly, if I could attribute anything to that, it's the fact that... Well, this was their last album. Much like something like ABBEY ROAD, it just hangs over the whole record until the end, where it finally can't ignore it anymore. I mean, the last two songs, "Bye Bye Love" and "Song Of Asking", are basically the two of them saying goodbye to each other and extending an olive branch if they ever wanted to get back together (or at least Paul is). Which, I don't think they ever did, given that Wikipedia still lists this as their last album, but still. The fact that the album ended like this is sweet. And this is coming from someone who hardly cares about Simon & Garfunkel outside of "The Sound Of Silence", so, hey, if this album's able to pull off making me feel like that... It's a hard 5 from me, and a heavy recommendation. I'm happy they were able to go out on top with something like this. And, hey, this album has the song that provided the title for my second-or-third favorite Edgar Wright movie, so that's worth something at least.
Simply immaculate folk. Solid 5 Stars.
I’m at a 5. Bridge Over Troubled Water, as a title track, sets an incredible tone and sets a high bar for the rest of the album, and while I don’t think it ever quite touches that bar again, it’s never more than a few inches away. El Condor Pasa is incredibly efficient in its simplicity, Cecilia feels like late 2000s indie rock in the best way possible, Keep the Customer Satisfied is the best Beatles song that Simon & Garfunkel ever made, and once this album gets to side 2, it just keeps rolling from there. There’s maybe one or two stumbles on its way to the finish line (looking right at “So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright” & “Bye Bye Love”), but regardless of anything else, that’s a super breezy and really enjoyable 37 minutes. I don’t think this lived up to like, the super duper universal acclaim that it has, but I can certainly see why people think that way, and maybe one day, it’ll click in that sense for me. Make no mistake about it, though; this is a stellar album. There’s a few tracks that didn’t hit as well for me, but from top to bottom, this thing is beautifully written, composed, and produced. It’s a great listen, and it fits perfectly as a final album for Simon & Garfunkel. Super easy 5.
Cathartic
loved album
Very Good!It integrates elements of rock, R&B, gospel, jazz, world music, pop music and other genres.I like it!
the sequencing is fine. get over yourselves. Bridge over Troubled Water is a record that i think is flawed, but still undeniably Simon and Garfunkel's best. it follows that trend of "Goodbye, the 60's" records like Abbey Road or The Velvet Underground; it's an eclectic medley of styles while still displaying what the band is best at. hearing this as my first full S&G album made me think that this scattered style is what holds it back, but after giving Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme and Bookends a listen, i've come to understand Bridge as their tightest album. every song is doing something different, but even the goofy tracks or covers don't feel time-wastey. it's just as well that this is their last album, because i don't think they could really improve on what they had here. it's not perfect, but it's the best they'll ever do it. i think you're probably some sort of sentient meat slab if "The Boxer" doesn't stir something in you. someone foolish said "Cecilia" is a proto-freak folk song. if an Animal Collective ripoff covered this whole album, how would they handle "Keep The Customer Satisfied"? accordion drone? creaky voice white girl doing the horn parts a cappella?
Un disco que marco época. Simon no por algo es uno de los mejores músicos y compositores de la historia, su trayectoria es impecable y Garfunkel las veces que se unió a Simon eran éxito asegurado.
I genuinely was not expecting to like this as much as I did, especially since I'd never listened to Simon & Garfunkel before. This album is outstanding - I wasn't sure if the rest of it would hold up to the rightfully iconic title and opening track, but it really did.
I love the vibe of this. It has such beauty. I mean, transporting ... to a place that I want to be. It resonates in the cave of my soul. Also, how does someone actually write something like Bridge Over Troubled Water? Like a butterfly: so fragile yet strong enough to fly and take us with it. Yes, this is what life is (should be) about. Song for the Asking ... need I say more.
Phenomenal album. It's hard to believe it was their last one, with all the good tracks on here. I enjoy the slightly less "folk-y" approach, with drums and horns and such, it gives the tracks more presence.
Bridge is an amazing song - those vocals are heavenly. Such a complicated relationship between the two of them. But somehow the music was beautiful, having arisen out of both love and contempt. Not so sure about the choice for the closer, but all in all this is a masterpiece.
Beautiful album with some of my favorite folk/folk rock songs of all time.
It's very good!
I read once on the internet that everyone has a favorite Simon And Garfunkel song and if you really listen to it, it'll break your heart. I'm not sure that's entirely true, but so many of the songs on this album sound sweet for their harmony or tempo or melody, and if you listen carefully you'll hear lonliness, alienation, fear of loss, and so many other emotions that can break your heart. End-to-end, it's a great album, but I found the crowd noise in "Bye Bye Love" jarring and distracting, so I have to take a half-star off for that. Rounding up, it's still a five-star album.
Excellent album
I don't care for the title track, but once you get past that, it's nearly perfect. Nothing Paul Simon did before or after quite compares.
Love this album. Wish I could play like Paul.
Have always loved this album. It's very sentimental.
Classic and a must-listen
Ahh yes, the Simon & Garfunkel album where it looks like Art Garfunkel has an enormous handlebar moustache lol. This album is actually really solid! Baby Driver, The Boxer, Cecilia....what's not to love... Simon & Garfunkel are hipster fuel though. Favourite songs: Baby Driver, Cecilia, The Boxer Least favourite songs: "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" 5/5
what a standard
The title track is a masterpiece. Such a beautifully written song. Honestly this album deserves a 5 just for the title track. It's probably one of the easiest 5 stars so far I've given so far in this project. The songs are all beautiful, interesting, and just really good.
Is there any other record that has more classics than this one? Its just banger after banger after banger. Also, who the hell starts off a record with the church music sounding "Bridge Over Troubled Water"? Absolutely brilliant. I remember the first time I listened to this all the way through. It was probably in 10th Grade and it definitely changed how I digested music and about what music could be. It's not quite as a raw as Bob Dylan or Kris Kristofferson tunes that I gravitate more towards, but the songwriting, the pop melodies and vocals are captivating. *Bridge Over Troubled Water -This is one of those song really translates through generations. It's a song that everyone can get behind. Its been covered by everyone and one that is universal loved. *El Condor Pasa (If I Could) -incredible song. I love how they took this traditional Peruvian song and made it contemporary, their own story and in English. *Cecilia -who couldn't love this song?? Old blues bo diddley rhythms and hand pipes?! *Keep the Customer Satisfied -probably the most skipped song on the album, but still a brilliant and fun song. Its fun and dancy. Honestly, a great change of pace. *So Long Frank Lloyd Wright -probably the most skipped song on the record, but I like that they did it. Its sentimental and meaningful. Also, I love the jazz flute in this song. *The Boxer -this is one that I'm always drawn to. I love the story, the melodies, the guitar, the chorus. I love the folk instruments and hand harps. Its mystical but it draws you in. *Baby Driver -another fun change of pace. Fun song. *The Only Living Boy in New York -The sad boy anthem of the century. Zach Bryan has got nothing on this song. I could turn this on any day and immediately be transformed. *Why Don't You Write Me -really fun and bluesy. I love the break from folk music on this one. It almost feels like it could be on a Beatles album, but with more weird instruments. *Bye Bye Love -I really love the live recording on this one. Its fun and good. Its a good cover, though I don't know if it was necessary on the album. *Song for Asking -Really great and sentimental way to end the record / career as a band. I love this album and I love this band.
Not a dud to be found on this one. Magic, every time I hear it. One of the most influential albums on my humble little musical life.
Albumi #86, 22.10.2024 Bridge Over Troubled Water on Simon & Garfunkelin viides ja viimeiseksi jäänyt albumi vuodelta 1970. Mykistävän hieno albumi. Ei tästä mitään muuta voi sanoa.
Wow. Never even really a fan of S&G but you listen to this and you feel the greatness. Every track a new facet of a diamond with different sounds and melodies and styles. The great ones wear many hats while the pretenders have as many sides as a pane of glass. Outstanding.
Absolutely gorgeous
Þessi kom mér á óvart. Ég bjóst ekki við að svona plata hefði fallið jafnvel í hlustirnar mínar og hún gerði. Kannski voru það bara kringumstæðurnar en ég held þetta sé bara frábær plata
I love this album. You have no idea.
Simon and Garfunkel have long been some of my favorite. I grew up with them being one of the groups my family most listened to. This is an absolute classic.
How else would I get over the troubled water?
Fiver... Too easy
Some of the most powerful and masterfully produced singles in all of popular music. Probably should get 6 or 7 stars for title song alone but it does get pretty flimsy right towards the end of the album. Bye Bye Love means bye bye half a star so 4.5 overall. Still a strong 4.5 though.
I keep getting 70’s classics, and I have no problem with that. This is just a collection of great songs, and I’m fine with that.
good
Simon & Garfunkel are always an easy listen. Both gentlemen were already well-versed and well-known in the music industry at this point in time, but this album is significant as it signaled the end of the duo's legendary run together. This is probably their most eclectic work without totally deviating from the folk rock sound they considered home. Immediately starting with a gospel-inspired track, followed by some Andean-inspired world music, rockabilly, jazz, and reggae. Highlights include the classic "Cecilia" (something about that reverb...), "Baby Driver", the self-titled track (where Garfunkel gets to shine), and the fun live cover of "Bye Bye Love". "Bridge Over Troubled Water" signified an amicable end to Simon & Garfunkel's successful musical partnership. It's the duo arguably at their best and also their most ambitious. They certainly went out with a bang before enjoying varying levels of success in their solo endeavors later on. This record is a perfect audio example of "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened".
One of the best!
One of the albums you must hear absolutly
banger after banger after banger, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, Cecilia and El Condor Pasa are my favorites
Excellent album!
Perfect in every way
Classic 2 voice harmonies ! Amazing
Just one of my favorite albums of all time. No big deal.
great harmony songwriting and musicianship
Because I don’t have a lot to say other than this is one of the best albums here are some random thoughts. Quincy Jones version of BOTW from Gula Matari is so good. Not sure if this is true but heard Hendrix was going to play on it but was too intimidated, which makes sense if you hear some of the guitar on there. Apparently Art didn’t like BOTW which is sick. BOTW is a very fun progression to play on guitar and often the first thing I play when I pickup a guitar. I’m very interested in Art and Simon’s relationship. Apparently both So Long Frank Lloyd Wright and Only Living Boy in NY are basically love songs Simon wrote for Art.
5 stars, obviously. Is Paul Simon the most accomplished American singer/ songwriter of all time? Who would it be between? Paul, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen?
Yayy. Ive heard this album 1000 times in my life and I never tire of it. Plain and simple, its a master piece of work Some amazingly catchy tracks with wild backstories. I personally dont care for the Peruvian El Condor Pasa, but that kind of strategy would eventually pay off for Simon
If you don't like this album, you don't like music and I don't like you. Some goddamn classics on here. I've listened to it a thousand times before and I'll listen it a thousand times more.
Opening title track absolutely rips, Garfunkel has such a smooth upper register, just an all-timer. The rest is basically a greatest hits album. Is it a little soft and inoffensive? Sure, but these are great tunes, and I’ll always love Paul Simon. That’s three fives in a row for me - I guess I’m a little easy to please.
Brilliant. My favourite so far.
Saw the cover and immediately wanted to give this a 5. Now halfways through and I'm genuinely smiling here at how easy the album makes that. I seem to have never listened to this, or even the hits, with proper attention - I know, say, The Boxer better from playing in my head than from how it actually sounds - the wonderfully weird harmonica, the sprinkles of slide guitar and how the deep strings(?) at the end cut to the light outro - and: these songs aren't just lovely but so much more interesting than I thought. Beautiful stuff. Greatest album I've had in a while.
Perfect
I love Paul Simon, one of the greatest to ever do it. This album has some awesome songs on it, has to be a 5. But I don’t think it’s their best, a couple of songs towards the end feel a little bit filler to me.
big moustache
Besonders an diesem Album.
Unmatched beauty in songwriting and performance have rarely (if ever!) been more clearly on display than in this album. Just sublime.
One of the greatest albums of all time. It holds up well as a standard record of what a perfect album should be. The harmonizing, the writing, and the instruments in it are a combination that is rarely done well together.
Slay
Bridge over Troubled Waters
This album is ridiculously good.
Their best album, hands down.
A great album
Big slap
This is so good it is like a greatest hits package. Banger after banger. My parents generally have terrible taste but I swear they had this back in the day, memory unlocked. Has to be a 5
all killer no filler
Virkelig tight plade, nærmest alle numre er all timers og alle numre er virkelig gode
the boxer is a gift from god, the titular opener to the album is great as well. Favorite s&g album
Grew up with this in the background. Have a deep love for this album still. Only living boy in new york still sounds like a choir of angels to me.
This is a really great album. While some of the up beat songs do feel a bit dated, I really connected with the more acoustic songs.
just freaking awesome THE ONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW YORKKK
It’s that good, I’m gonna buy it on vinyl :)
Phenomenal
Most definitely the best album I have listened to yet! I love it, all of it!
Every song's a banger
Love this album
5 stars. A lot of familiar songs.
I've grown a huge appreciation for Paul Simon during this project, and this album cements him and Art Garfunkel's status as one of the great singer/songwriter duos of all time. Notable Tracks: - Bridge Over Troubled Water - just epic, probably better suited for later in the album - El Condor Pasa (If I Could) - Cecilia - The Boxer - Song for the Asking 9/10
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
My high school graduation song.
A perfect album composed of so many perfect songs. It has heartfelt songs filled with nostalgia like the title track and The Boxer. It has fun and quirky songs like Baby Driver and Keep the Customer Satisfied. It feels like they must run out of material at some point, and then they knock you down with Only Living Boy in New York. This album could be so much worse and still be a 5.
Favourite tracks: bridge over troubled water; el condor pasa; Cecilia; keep the customer satisfied; so long frank Lloyds wright; the boxer; only living boy in new york
Buenísimo, con 4 clásicos imperdibles.
Excellent. Great melodies, great harmonies, great lyrics, great rhythms, excellent recording and feel. Classic in so many ways and just awesome. Five stars.
This is impossible. There’s no flaws here. It’s an immaculate recording. Paul Simon is a genius. 5/5
Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, Cecilia, The Only Living Boy in New York, El Condor Pasa... You just can't beat a tracklist containing gems such as these. And all the deeper cuts are perfectly nice as well. Funny how this record received very mixed reviews at the time... Guess the "critics" missed its main point: yes, this album's production is lush and expansive, and goes to all sorts of directions... but this is another reason why the album is the crowning achievement of Simon and Garfunkel's career. I'm not gonna elaborate here--the second review currently topping this section does that perfectly. Just wish I could have been there first to talk about Artie's "moustache". Alas, the *first* review topping this section beat me to it long ago... Number of albums left to review: 126 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 378 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 224 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 283
This is an album I bought for $1 in a swap meet parking lot about 35 years ago. I gave it to my son when he moved out. As 5 star classic as it gets.
This is my top “here’s some songs guaranteed to make you ugly cry for hours” simply because I was forced to listen to it in high school marching band. We played a lot of these songs so there is ENTIRELY too much nostalgia and emotion. Neverthaless here we go. Imagine simply writing Bridge Over Troubled Water and expecting the world not to change. Lollerskates. They punch you in the face and push you over almost immediately, as if they’re saying HEY MAN FUCK YOUR GOOD MOOD BUT LIFE IS SO BEAUTIFUL SO SUCK IT UP. I truly do not think there is a more beautiful leading track on any record, ever. These two goofballs have vocals that could stop a bank robbery. I’m literally crying right now. Literally. Anyway it’s just ON from there. El Condor Pasa is a massive switch from soaring melodies to Mexican pipe flutes and weird ass lyrics but somehow Paul Simon fuckin kills it. It’s dreamy and disconcerting at the same time. What is even happening right now. AND THEN? Cecelia. A fully upbeat, clap your fuckin hands kind of ditty, all percussion with a sick guitar accompaniment. Then we get the dang flute again but it’s a great lead into what I can only describe as what a skeleton playing its own ribcage? You know exactly what I mean. It fully forms at the end with more harmonies and oh shit I’m crying again. But this time it’s happy tears I think. Keep The Customer Satisfied is another upbeat and fun track but the horns… THE HORNS. You aren’t ready. There’s a touch of organ here too which adds a subtle flavor. Clever and cheeky. So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright is a sleepy, quiet track because you need a damn minute after Customer. I’d imagine this was intentional. Slow and calming. Also what the fuck is this song even about? #1 track for architects I guess. Kinda beatnik-y. The Boxer is yet another one that I am guaranteed to bust out crying to. It tells a sad but inspiring story but the music is insanely good. Starts out quiet but builds to an intense crescendo and you are left feeling like you just got knocked over again. HARMONIES, DUDE. CRIPES. Listen to this track loud for maximum effect tbh. Baby Driver is another weird one that is probably my least favorite but it’s still a fun listen. CB radio crap was all the rage around this time so it’s sort of understandable. Only Living Boy In New York… you bet I’m tearing up again. There’s some weird vibes here but it is such a powerful song. The way these two goofy lads put vocals into the mix as if it’s another instrument is outstanding. The lack of verse/chorus/verse here is also incredible. It’s just MUSIC. But the story is also lovely and it leaves you wondering about this fictional character and what happened to them. Completely switching gears again, Why Don’t You Write Me is an oddly poppy song but it’s not too silly. Not my favorite song on the record next to Baby Driver but it’s got some cool moments. The live version of Bye Bye Love included here isn’t bad, kind of a weird track to include but it’s great. They were an incredible live band for sure. Finally Song For The Asking is a quiet little one but a great ending. It’s almost like they’re saying “hey man, glad you made it this far, let’s do it again sometime.” And then you do.
Now this is a classic. Lots of good songs on here. Love it.
This album is just so complete. Every song makes sense and is somehow different from the rest. From the sensitive “Bridge over troubled water” to the fun times of “Cecilia” to the Peruvian “El Condor Pasa”. I knew I loved this album, but listening in this context just hits different. 5 stars.
Favourite song - Baby driver
Such a wonderful album. The title track is simply one of the greatest songs ever written - optimistic, compassionate, heartfelt and hopeful, and delivered with a glorious vocal performance. The Boxer, The Only Living Boy in New York, Baby Driver, Keep the Customer Satisfied ... just great tune after great tune. So Long Frank Lloyd Wright is a bit of an oddity but is pleasant enough - really the only minor misstep is the live Everly Brothers cover, which is the kind of thing you might expect on a debut, rather than a final recording. Still, a brilliant, brilliant album.
It’s the best Simon & Garfunkel album.
MASTERPIECE oh yes.
I knew I'd like the album, but had no idea I already knew and enjoyed damn near every song on the album. Iconic!
One of my favorite albums of all time. I have basically every song already saved. Easy 5
Ein echter Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte mit vielen zeitlosen Songs
Really amazing music and album that cares to surprise!
When the worst song on your album is “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” you know you’ve got a banger on your hands. While I’m more likely to relisten to the other two S&G albums on this list, from a song-by-song perspective, this is their peak. It also contains my favorite of their songs, “Cecilia” and “The Only Living Boy in New York,” as well as amazing cuts like “Keep the Customer Satisfied” and “Song for the Asking.” I do think you could cut a song or two and have an even better/tighter record — my vote is against “Why Don’t You Write Me” or maybe “Baby Driver,” as both feel a bit tonally off — but that’s just nitpicking greatness. Justice for Art Garfunkel’s solo career, though, even if he’s annoying.
Amazing harmonization, great songwriting, emotional performances… S&G are the complete package here. Hard to pick a favorite to add to my 1001 playlist, too many goodies.
Peak Simon and Garfunkel
I previously listened to "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" by Simon & Garfunkel from this list. And I've said that first song enough is to give that album 5/5. This one is not different. Musical masterpiece. Vocal, instruments, composition.
whimsical vocals Sing along lyrics with charm Make listening fun
Great album
They saved their best for last. Not a wasted note, in my opinion. Perfection. 5/5
Could be a greatest hits album, most people of a certain age have probably heard all the songs even if they never had the album. I’ve probably heard Bridge and the Boxer too many times in my life but will never tire of Cecilia. Would be churlish not to give it a 5/5.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Now we’re talking. Beautiful music and soulful lyrics. A classic.
Beautifull songs, extremely catchy and an amazing vocal performance. 5/5
I've been trying to be very conservative with my 5 star rankings, but here's 2 in a row. What an incredible album...
Great
9/10 Easiest 5 so far, pretty much a perfect album. Maybe 75% is elite-level classic songs? Incredible hit rate here For an album with such huge production, have to compliment how restrained it is at times, building and leaving room for biiig finishes Skips around genres but keeps its heart. Second half clearly influenced by 60s pop and the Beatles for sure Best: The Boxer
Great!
I like Simon and Garfunkel duo very much. This album is a masterpiece. Every song is perfect. Thanks for this album listening again.
I love Paul Simon and listened to a few S&G albums and never quite got what everyone loves about them. Always feels like a bunch of pixies in a folk band trying to impress their fairy friends with terrible music. But this record is a total banger! Feels way more Simon than Garfunkel - so maybe that’s the problem! 4.6
Of course!
Love this album. 4.5. Reminds me of dad/childhood.
2024-06-05...
I love Simon and Garfunkel and this likely their best album.
Just about a perfect record. The title song being a great song and aptly named for what was their last album. Simon carried on, breaking new ground making fantastic music. Garfunkel not so much. The occasional reunion concerts were much appreciated.
Two of the best harmonizers out there. Superb stuff
I've had this record for years but rarely *really* listen to it -- just great from start to finish. Don't really understand the (seemingly) fake crowd noise on Bye Bye Love but everything else more than makes up for it. This will be in the rotation more heavily, for sure.
Sooo many great songs - The Only Living Boy in New York will always be a fave of mine.
Sensational classic album, these songs are timeless classics. I think the lyrics for Cecilia were a bit wacky though, (Maybe the others were too but I didn't pay much attention to them).
Beautiful, ambitious, and quietly falling apart—the album won six Grammys, then they split. With multiple classics on here, it's clear why it sold like wildfire.
This album is a monster.
Finally, some real fucking songs.
This album now sounds very old - I was recently out of primary school when it came out - and that can blind me to just how beautiful I thought it was back then. I loved it. Then I discovered yer Sabbaths and yer Zeppelins.
I love these guys 1 speechless 2 I can’t review this album. I enjoy these songs too much 3 Thank the universe for these two making music together 4. Nice horns Overall fantastic album.
I love Simon and Garfunkel - while this isn’t my ultimate favourite album of theirs it is a joy to listen to.
Total classic :) from start to finish - this is a classic album
Loved this album ever since I heard it as a kid in the car going on holiday. There are some great individual songs but as an album it flows beautifully and only really lets up when it gets to "Why don't you write me" and the cover of "Bye Bye Love"
I had forgotten how good this album is!
every song sublime
Quite possibly this duo’s best album and certainly contains some of my favorites.
Another nearly perfect album. This was S&G at their best, both in Simon’s songwriting and in Garfunkel’s tender voice. Even though they broke up right afterwards, this album shows their greatest congruence, tenderness, and even love for each other. Paul Simon wrote “The Only Living Boy in New York” about his loneliness when Garfunkel was out of town for an extended time filming a movie. Really the only song that feels out of place on the album is the live version of “Bye Bye Love”, which is a fine cover but just doesn’t fit in with the rest of the pieces here. The duo recorded a number of songs which didn’t make it to the album, and this one got picked instead. This is a shame, because bootleg and demo recordings of songs like “Feuilles-O” are brilliant and would have flowed beautifully with the rest of the album. Even though this album is a notch below perfect, it’s still one of my all time favorites.
Another surprisingly good album. "The Boxer" will always be my favourite from Simon and Garfunkel. What a great way to start the 70s. A few songs miss the mark a bit but that doesn't matter. I've still got many albums to review. 5 stars from me.
A classic!
This record was always on in my house when I was growing up, the first song was my parents song 🎶❤️
Classic from childhood
I had heard the popular stuff like cecilia and the title track and the boxer and whatnot. But every single song on this album could have been the most famous and i wouldn’t have batted an eye. this is just gorgeous front to back and the first truly skipless one i have encountered yet
Legend
First off, I love how Paul Simon's fringe looks like Art Garfunkel has a handlebar moustache on the cover photo. Then to the album itself. Brilliant.
Love them and this album!!
The song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" still stands as one of the greatest vocal performances of all time. Art Garfunkel makes Paul Simon's song his own for all time. Simon, of course, puts his songwriting craftsmanship on full display. Just a wonderful storyteller. Cecilia, and The Boxer are standouts. Even the secondary tracks like Baby Driver and Keep the Customer Satisfied are standouts. The Only Living Boy in New York elicits a mood that cannot be described; melancholy, subdued yet looking forward...
Последний альбом этой группы, очень нежный и трогательный, звучит будто колыбельная
no comment
This album is excellent. They explore new genres and use the strings well for dramatic effect on top of the top-tier harmonies they've always had. The title song might be the most famous from the album but it is far from the best. I like The Boxer and The Only Living Boy in New York more, and other tracks are at least as good. It's a shame this was their last album together.
Nothing else to say. Love this album
So great
Wow. What a last album. Or in some ways, is this really the first solo album of Mr. Simone's storied solo career 🤔? It sure feels like it. I don't hold a whole lot of knowledge when it comes to Simone or Garfunkle. But it was nice to put track names to so many songs I've heard before. And to put them into context. This is just sublime.
The album where songwriter Paul Simon goes on a motherfucking tear!! Every song is INCREDIBLE. The writing is right up there with the best Lennon/McCartney, and you can just feel the competitive New York edginess here. I've always felt like this feels like a Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits record more than an actual album, because any cohesiveness or continuity of the album is dwarfed by the sheer quantity of AMAZING hit songs. Released January 1970, but this is the last album of the 1960's, as far as I'm concerned. Ring in the bell of the new decade. Hard to pick a favorite song... if Paul Simon didn't go on to have a terrific career after this, this would be rightfully seen as a songwriter and duo at the height of their creative powers. They manage to do everything right, in a language they built for themselves and perfected, and just sum up everything there is to love and cherish about the folk period of the 60's. What an incredible album. 5/5
This is by far one of the greatest albums ever made. Bridge Over Troubled Water is so exceptionally beautiful. LOVE SIMON & GARFUNKEL.
This customer was satisfied. This is S&G at their best. Paul shed most of his collegiate pretensions that made some of their earlier stuff cringey. He’s settled into being a beautiful songwriter and poet. Not just showing off how smart and cool he is to impress chicks.
What else to say? Cecilia, The Boxer, The Only Living Boy in New York. Wonderful songs here. (I'm not even a big fan of the title track, but probably only because we've all heard it a million times.)
Previously rated: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme (4/5) ********************************************* When I was younger, I though S&G were lame and boring with a couple of exceptions, so it feels weird to enjoy this so much now. There's a good mix of slow and up-tempo and different styles. Their voices and unique and mesh well together. I like it a bit more than the previous album. Favorite track: I've always liked "Cecilia."
Hoo boy, this was excellent. Some great bops and some all-time sad songs to cry to. An incredible, diverse album that has permeated popular culture in countless ways, and with very good reason. Loved it. Already loved it, of course, but it went so far beyond holding up. I liked this more than I've ever liked it before.
Perfect
What a great album. I even like the tracks I had never listened to, especially liked Keep the Customer Satisfied. The Boxer is an all-timer and I just read that they spent hundreds of hours recording and producing that song. There is only the single drum part which was recorded in the lobby of the record company building. Paul Simon is a musical genius and Art Garfunkel was a great friend. But seriously Art owns Bridge Over Troubled Water. Amazing song. Love this.
Perfect.
Easy 5/5 Every song is amazing…except the live track at the end -Horrible . Just doesn’t fit with the flow of the album at all.
Giants of folk rock at the peak (and soon to be the end) of their career as a duo. Paul Simon is the sole songwriter here and he gets the opportunity to shine. Despite the two drifting apart, their collaboration still works here. There are so many great songs. This is one of the best selling albums in history and it still sounds timeless today.
Hell yes this album was my introduction to S&G after a family friend gave me her vinyl copy back in high school. I've listened to all of their albums since then, I'm a big fan. The duo really runs the gamut with this one: dramatic ballads (title track, "The Boxer"), super fun folk-pop jams ("Cecilia," "Baby Driver"), more stripped-down low-key cuts ("So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright," "Song for the Asking"), and more instrumentally diverse bops ("El Condor Pasa," "Keep the Customer Satisfied"). This album is S&G's final form. After starting out with stripped-down acoustic folk on their first album, they evolved quite a bit up until this album, where they really show their skills as a pop powerhouse with a much expanded musical palate. Favorite Songs: All of them
this one is very good 9.7/10
An absolute classic!
Classic - three of my favorite songs on this album: Cecilia, The Boxer & El Condor Pasa
Love it. El Condor Pasa is a personal fave, but really every song here shines.
Love, Love, Love this album. I still love their greatest hits more…but that’s not really fair. I could listen to this album anytime and enjoy every moment of it.
A classic album with not one mediocre song on it.
A near perfect album, just a shame I have an ex called Celia!
There are very few albums which I have entirely liked on Spotify. I think it’s Led Zep IV, Rumours, and this one. Bridge Over Troubled Water really is perfect
It's worth 5 stars just for the Boxer. The last verse of which is one of the best verses ever written. I'd never listened to this entire album, just half of it from the Greatest Hits album. All killer, no filler.
Loved The Boxer!
I enjoyed this very much. Especially the songs that never had air play.
One of the rare albums you could play for pretty much anyone and the worst response you would get is "yeah, that's nice". If you aren't pulled in by the opener then I just don't understand you, nevermind the multiple other classics like 'Boxer', 'Cecelia', and 'New York'.
This is a classic and I love it!
Bridge Over Troubled Water - 5 El Condor Pasa - 5 Cecilia - 5 Keep the customer Satisfied - 4.5 So Long Frank Loyd Wright - 4.5 The Boxer - 5 Baby Driver - 5 The Only Living Boy in New York - 5 Why Don't You Write Me - 4 Bye Bye Love - 4 Song For The Asking - 4.5 Average - 4.68⭐ Reviewing this after Scott 4 by Scott Walker is like being shown the baseline and then the exception. Great album all throughout 👍
Sublime, beautiful. I never realised how beautiful and delicate the title track is, until listening on headphones (instead of people signing along with a rousing chorus). And the the whole album is amazing.
When I started this album I had to replay 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' several times before I actually started the album. Such a beautiful opening.
Es una locura. Una canción memorable, y otra, y otra. 5/5.
Love. Soothing, lyrically interesting. Enjoyed the use of stereo
A great album! Loved this one since it came out when I was but a wee lad
Smooth, great listening, would listen again
Great Album. So much ambiance and good craftmanship. Paul Simon is a genius. 5 stars
Loved it!
One of my favorite albums
Pure Gold
so good!! i have this on vinyl but my aux cord broke so streamed it rip. 5/5
Classic
Would listen again and again. Love the whole album
Classic after classic on this one. Spectacular vocal performance by Artie. The songwriting by Paul hints at the twists and turns in his stellar solo career.
This is the best!
This is possibly the greatest folk album I've ever heard. I got a little nervous in the first couple of tracks that this album wasn't going to live up to the hype, but it really came alive down the stretch. I've heard instrumentation that I've never heard in folk before and it sounds truly innovative even sixty years later. A masterclass of the genre.
favourite song: the boxer just so good isnt it
Bridge Over Troubled Water BOTW - have heard so many times and so familiar. Even though sometimes the recording can feel a little OTT, really listening to it, what a magical song. Uplifting, comforting and full of beautiful moments, ‘Sail on, silver girl…’ in particular. Always loved El Condor Pasa, particularly the intro. Keep the Customer Satisfied I also love. Good example of Paul Simon’s wry sardonic storytelling. It took a while for me to see that So Long, Frank Lloyd Wight was a good song. It’s a lovely little melody with a skipping rhythm and I like the little fiddle string low in the mix The Boxer - what a song. Sounds brilliant every time I hear it. Might be my favourite S&G song. Baby Driver, similar to Customer. I do like these quirky upbeat songs he does , a bit like Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard from Paul Simon’s ‘first’ solo album. Kind of upbeat folky Motown with unusual rhyme patterns I LOVE The Only Living Boy in New York. Just love it, the bass, the feel, everything. Why Don’t You Write Me. I feel like this is the only down note on the album. Feels like an arrangement looking for a song and the whole thing doesn’t quite convince. I’m never quite sure why Bye Bye Love is on here too. It’s a good version of a great song, but it’s always stuck out as a bit odd. Not necessarily bad but seems out of place. Song For the Asking. I really enjoy the low key nature of this, a nice contrast to the ‘big’ opening of the title song. Lovely track. I do love this album, I go back and forth between this and Bookends as my favourite S&G album, but they are both great. For such a great act it’s always surprising how it feels like they only really have two ‘proper’ albums. They have written some of the greatest songs though and I suppose that’s why any greatest hits of theirs is so good. Even though it’s not quite perfect and does feel uneven towards the end with Why Don’t You Write Me and Bye Bye Love , before the lovely Song for the Asking I think this has to be a 5, it’s got two of the greatest songs ever and some of their best non ‘big’ songs. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A beautiful and highly polished send-off. Sometimes upbeat, mostly reflective, always fully realized. The title song is and probably always will be one of my all-time favorites. Best song: Bridge Over Troubled Water
Impeccable. The high watermark of their career. This album is a triumph, a masterpiece, a magnum opus. It is a must-have staple for any record collection. I’m utterly delighted I got to have it for my 900th album!
Really really good. Beautiful songs. Super enjoyable listen. 5/5 :)
Clearly a masterpiece from start to finish, this album features a handful of hits accompanied by several lesser-known songs that are just as good. The title song builds beautifully (I'm a big fan of these songs that gradually become extravagant and orchestral), setting a perfect tone for the rest of the album. I'd never heard this whole S&G album before until now, but it might be their best.
Perfect. My childhood. Parents played this album constantly. Only good memories for me.
Classic album reminds me so much of Billy and Carl. Great memmys. The boxer. El condor pasa and the only living boy in new york. 5 stars is the only answer.
I can't listen to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" without crying - I heard that song in the car right after my aunt's funeral, and no song described her better. The other songs, while not as powerful personally, are still great. 5/5
beautiful album, very raw and consistent, title track was absolutely phenomenal too. not a single bad song i’d say, really enjoyed it, would definitely be listening to it again.
One of the all time greats 5
Great harmonies
Love it, spin it all the time.
These are such great songs
I’ve never been a huge fan of the American folk music of the 60s, which Simon & Garfunkel have been associated with. However, this is anything but your standard folk album. Their harmonies are classic, but there are so many other musical influences permeating the composition of these songs. Really enjoyable. I would gladly listen to any of the songs on this album anytime.
I bought this album when it was released. Bought it again when life moved to CDs. It's been on my streaming playlist for years now. One of the greatest duo groups of all time and this album is the culmination of their prodigious talent both individually and together. The poetry of Paul Simon's writing and the diversity of the song genres is classic. A great album by artists at their prime!!
Liked this one a lot. Very chill vibes. Something I would listen to on a lazy afternoon with nothing to do. Favorite songs: Cecilia, The Boxer, The Only Living Boy In New York
I was not expecting that brassy section in Keep the Customer Satisfied.
Classic
A welcome break from all the Smashing Pumpkins. Right off the bat, banger, banger, banger. Bold move to start off with such a slow, emotional song, but it worked well. Favorite tracks: El Condor Pasa, Cecilia, The Boxer, Baby Driver
heavenly omg
Masterpiece, fantastic.
I love this album. Bridge over troubled water and the boxer are incredible timeless songs.
I can't separate my thoughts about this album from the number of times I listened to it as a kid. At that age, I don't think I fully appreciated how unusual a lyric like "architects may come and architects may go and never change your point of view" is in pop music.
Garfunkel and Oates have forever made it impossible for me to remember this band's name. Not generally the music I choose to listen to, but a fun listen. And Cecilia is a bop, though they guy saying "pick it up" sounded like he was behind me in real life and legitimately scared me.
Classic for a reason, an entire catalog of masterpieces
Absolute classic Love it
I find it hard to put into words how much and why I love this album. It’s perfect.
AMAZING!!
Liked it A lot more than I thought I would
fave track: song for the asking final thoughts: just gorgeous !
Some all time bangers. Cool instrumentation, bomb ast percussion on cecilia specifically. Basic? Perhaps but still so consistently good. Bolivia represents
masterpiece 5
Classic
I could see Paul McCartney being envious of this album. This is what his first solo album should’ve sounded like. This album’s production is beautiful, thanks to the newly developed 16 track recorder. But this albums’ long legacy is due to Paul Simon’s melodies, and for the fact that not many albums from 1970 sounds like this. ‘The Boxer’ easily rivals Sounds of Silence as the best Simon & Garfunkel song. Only Paul Simon could write the riff of ‘Baby Driver’, which should be as iconic as ‘I Feel Fine’. There are only two middle of the road songs on this album. ‘So Long, Frank Llyod Wright’ which could’ve easily been on Bookends and didn’t develop the sound of this project. The other is ‘Why Don’t You Write Me’, which could’ve been a Kinks song off of ‘Face to Face’ but didn’t fully embrace the quirkiness that Ray Davies would’ve. The album ends very solid on a cover of the Everly Brother, ‘Bye Bye Love’, which fits the themes of love lost, and then the short poem ‘Song for the Asking’. I’m leaning more towards a 4.5 but I’ll give it a solid 5
Loved
Great set of songs
I had this album in 1970 and listened to it often. Art Garfunkel singing bridge over troubled water still gives me chills
A perfect album.
One of my favorite albums. It does not get old. Simon & Garfunkel at their best.
This is definitely my first listen of this album but it feels like I've already heard it before. Maybe because of interpolation and samples from newer songs? Idk. But I love the album! I enjoyed listening to it. Will be adding this on my playlists.
There might not be any records from the 1970s more about the 1960s than this one. “Bridge” looks back but it definitely moves forward too. It sounds like it’s Simon and Garfunkel reaching the next level, it’s so full of great performances and memorable songs. But there would be no more levels for them, only memories, and a Paul Simon solo career for the ages. They would have one more triumph together if you count the Central Park Concert reunion but really this record is it—the culmination of an incredible partnership. “Bridge” as a title track is at once a tour de force and a heartbreaking signal flare shot above our heads telling us that this duo is done. It has always existed and it is eternal. Simon makes the case on the title track (and throughout the record) that he is a songwriter worthy of a place in the pantheon and Garfunkel steals the show with angel tier level vocal performance right off the bat. It’s an incredibly masterful opening track and it would’ve justified this album’s existence by itself. Of course, there’s also the ageless “El Condor Pasa” and the infectious singalong “Cecilia” which both hint at Simon’s ballooning passion for World Music. “The Only Living Boy in New York” might be the most depressing song on the record, but it’s the immortally mournful “The Boxer” that strikes the saddest chord. Those “lie la-lies” speak louder than any of the actual lyrics about the depths of isolation and defeat, and that’s saying something on a record that’s essentially a Swan Song. That their final record together is probably their best is a lovely coda and a fitting capstone for one of the most celebrated duos of the ‘60s and beyond. “Ask me and I will play/All the love that I hold inside.” Well, we did ask and you delivered. We couldn’t ask for more.
I could listen to this one over and over…
Love it
love
Superb and timeless. This album is musical melancholy with diverse styles of instrumental compositions that are few and far between in most of todays modern popular music releases.
Amazing to be reminded how great Paul Simon's songwriting talent really is. Even the smallest songs are so well crafted.... what a gift. Also great to listen to him when he started to use his own voice for his songs, rather than just provide harmony. He is a legend whose every song is worth listening to, both for wonderful lyrics and for fantastic guitar skills. And then he brings in the world music ....! 👏👏👏
I mean, this is top 5 best albums of all time.
un super clásico "if i could" de toda la vida me gusta mucho
Classic ... such an effortless blend of different of genres and styles into their folk sound, all with a calm and relaxing feel throughout.
Classic in every way. Some of these songs just get better every time. Opening track/title track is probably my least favorite, but listening to this album again gave me a renewed respect for S&G.
4.5 One of the best musical duos of all time at their absolute best. Beautiful, vivid storytelling. Near perfect album.
This album slaps so fucking hard. This is a childhood and adulthood favorite.
Really nice album with lots of variety. Though there are some extremes, with a few songs being amazing classics and the others unfortunately being quite forgettable.
Perfection.
Ah, the emo-music of the 70s
I LOVED THIS ALBUM. I felt like i was in the crowd at a music festival while I was puttering around doing chores. Cheerful and energetic.
Timeless classic from a legendary duo.
