Fun pop/rock. Reminded me a little bit of Led Zeppelin.

Fine, didn’t really wow me. Some riffs were nice, but I was mostly waiting for it to end for some reason. Probably more to do with me than the album.

They’ve told me all I need to know. 5 HIGHLIGHTS: Every Song Nah we’ll start this one in earnest. I said upon opening the page “this looks like it sucks.” Why? Probably the cover. I was expecting more music in the vein of War and Curtis Mayfield, which really wasn’t doing it for me. Apparently this is power pop. I’ve enjoyed some powerful pop in my day, so hoping this really does vault its way to the number 1 spot in my heart. Guitars are part of the record. Part of my journalistic sleuthing is telling you what instruments are here. I’m hearing drums and vocals as well. Well. There is piano, saxophone and in case you were wondering, yes, this is the SNL outro music. Or at least a precursor to same. A little too jovial for me. Hey now. This is pretty nice. Has that sweet power pop melancholia and a good little song structure. The background vocals are nice. I believe that El Goodo was indeed The Goodo. That’s an expert level translation. The song probably could’ve ended a few refrains shorter, but still a nice spot. There’s been a lot of talk of “The Street,” and I’m starting to wonder where this street is. What happens there? This song feels like a thoughtless deep track. We’re only three songs in, boys. Same old thing we did last week. No! Walk you home from school? The POOL?? Mr. Big Star, why don’t you take a seat. You were obviously part of the teen chat room as “El Goodo.” You haven’t been messaging a thirteen year old junior high student, but rather our crack team of predator catchers. Now that you are firmly in our net, we have to ask, why write this ballad, detailing your obvious attempt to court a 13 year old? I would recommend checking hard drives of any surviving members of this band. Big yikes. Anyway. After the super weird pedophile jam, we’re listening to a pretty decent one. I’m still recovering to be fair. What the hell was that? Am I insane, or was that incredibly weird? God. This song is good, but ugh. I feel gross. A Christmas song about India. Buddy wants to live in the Taj Mahal, and read a few books. Classic move. This was kinda meh. Started cool but went nowhere with it. The catch of “When My Baby’s Beside Me” is that he’s talking about an actual baby. They just keep getting younger. This song hasn’t aged well. Quite boring. Booooring. Yeah this thing is losing em. The vocals are nice, there’s nothing technically wrong with the album (other than the pedophilia), but it’s just not holding me. This getting obnoxious, yet somehow still fading into the background. Not loving it. A boring outro cascades this one into the forgotten mulch heap of the 1001. Of course the auto play introduces me to September Gurls by Big Star, which is eons better than anything that I just heard on #1 Record. There seemed to be an attempt to chart with this one, while also lulling the listener into a deep and restful slumber. I heard glimmers of promise on this one but overall was left disappointed and feeling rather gross. Decent to boring songs surrounding a weird track that should have every descendant of this band banned from public school. Should’ve called this album #458 record by not that big a star. I really don't see the appeal of this band. Maybe I just don't like glam rock, but this album is on the whole just boring, and kinda annoying.

This album was like that one annoying kid in high school who got bullied by everyone and you wanted to say nice things to them because you felt sad they were being bullied, but they were so annoying you couldn't. I wanted so badly to love this album, but all the production choices, as well as the vocal choices by the lead singer, were extremely grating.

Similarly to the other album by Big Star on this list, it was an unimpressive and boring show of generic 70s rock. I didn't like the album Third, as I don't like #1 Record. Well, maybe I'm glad that this list is slowly coming to the end.

The music is good. The lyrics are dumb.

This was an alright 70's pop rock album. It just played in the background, and the song that made me look up was a song that auto-played after the album, For You on their Complete Third album. I'll check that one out, but this gets a 2 from me.

Hey, it's the theme song from That 70s Show. Other than that, I found this pretty unremarkable. Apparently this was a super influential album, but I think it suffers the fate of many super influential but not very well-known pieces of media, which is that the far more popular works it has influenced have kinda spoiled the novelty of the original thing. If you really like jangly guitars and vocal harmonies you may enjoy this more than I did. But it's not bad. 5/10

Not so much Big Star as Dwarf Planet! Except Pluto is quite interesting and this absolutely wasn’t.

Another example where the lone breakout song is the only one worth your time. Just listen to "Thirteen" off of this album (which is a good track) and you can safely ignore the rest.

Never heard of this. The release year doesn’t give me high hopes. Not great. Kind of 70s rock pop, with a dash of 60s flower child hippie pop thrown in.

‘In The Street’ and ‘When My Baby’s Beside Me’ are the only real memorable songs on this. ‘St 110/6’ also has a really nice melody as well but is unfortunately less than a minute long. The rest of this while pleasant and beautifully produced is essentially a snooze fest.

Seriously, Dimery, stop trying to make Big Star a thing. They couldn't do it for themselves in the 1970s, but you've put 1½ of their 2½ albums into the list - for why? Are they the 1970s version of Doves?

I know this is a classic album by an influential band, and I have even listened to it more than once. I just don't get the hype, it just sounds like regular pop rock to me. Key tracks: Feel

Never heard of this band before today, they are not bad. Chilled out easy to listen to music. Great for listening at work or while hanging out. I'm sure that I will listen to this again although nothing really stood out for me.

Just didn't get this one. I tried to listen but it just kinda washed away.

This wasn’t really my thing. The sudden appearance of rocky Dont Lie to Me was very jarring, especially as the next song is almost Xmas folk music, then back to rock hooks after that. Then In The Street literally rocks up at the end.

I like Big Star and some tunes here did immediately grab me, but by the end I was a bit bored of it. I think it possibly just needs some relistens, sometimes when I hear an album for the first time, it doesn't click - you need to get familiar with the songs. For now I give this a 2, but that would likely change in future!

Solid 2. Not a single song will be remembered tomorrow.

This stuck with me better than Third. I think it's the influence of Bell. Still not quite feeling Big Star though. Much better listen at work than in the car - perhaps too trebley?

Calling this a number one record was probably a bit overzealous. It's an alright record, but definitely not in the top 250 of this list.

I’ve tried multiple times. I just can’t get past the straight up wuss rock. I get the influential nature but no thanks.

#1 Record is a bit of a stretch. It’s very poppy, in more modern way than you’d think for 1972. It was probably ahead of its time. Big Star seems like a bit of a poor man’s Boston. Radio friendly rock but without the absolute bangers. Or really any bangers. 5.8/10

I enjoyed finding the theme song to That 70s Show on this album, but I don’t think I found much else to write home about. Forgive me - I think I like my Alex Chilton a bit more aged.

The 70's Show theme! You can hear how this influenced future artists...Kiss formed a year later. Aerosmith's debut was also a year later. I hear White Stripes in there too. Also some dumb stuff I never need to hear again.

Hey, that’s the theme song from “That 70’s Show!” Only not quite? I wonder how much Big Star gets from their song being covered for the intro of one of the most syndicated sitcoms of the last couple decades? It’s not even their version used, but it’s still their most lasting legacy. Which is a bit sad and underwhelming. It might be their “#1 Record,” but it’s not a #1 record.

A smorgasbord of musical ideas from the late 60's and early 70's, good, but not original. Really just aping what a bunch of the big groups were doing at the time, but even cover bands choose one artist to emulate, not all of them. 🐒🐒

I'm sure that this was well-received in 1972. And maybe they were inspirational to many bands, but to me, in 2024, it sounded like a parody band - a "Spinal Tap" of what a pop-rock band should sound like. Read up a bit on them, and it truly sounds like a Netflix show about a struggling rock band. (Inspiration???)

Hey, this has the song from "That '70s Show." I knew Cheap Trick performed it for the show, so I'd always assumed it was one of their songs. Finding it here was a pleasant surprise. The rest of the album was...interesting. 2.5 stars.

This album influenced many bands that I love, REM, Guided By Voices, Wilco, etc, but it’s just never clicked with me. The songs are too spare, too mid-tempo — all just a bit short of hitting critical mass. Radio City is much stronger to these ears.

Singer sounds like Pink Floyd Kinda funky and banjoish and old sounding? Thirteen was my favorite The India Song sounded like a Christmas song Overall sounds like it'd be played in a Logan's, 3/10 on the listen again scale

Got to admire the confidence in the band name and album title. Doesn't quite live up to it really though, it's a decent enough listen but very generic 70s rock, not enough oomph behind it to give it a good score. 2/5.

it is absolutely no surprise that punk happened in the 70s. i would have lost my mind when access to music was way harder than it is today and the world was awash with this type of wank.

Fun fact: Robert Plant's favourite from this album is When My Baby's Beside me. He's a big baby noncer.

Not quite the blueprint for Teenage Fanclub that I was led to believe. This is more like a US version of The Sweet. It's good, honest rock 'n' roll. Nothing wrong with that. But nothing to offer much hope with, either.

Listened, but it didn't register, who or why are Big Star? Should I listen, should I pray, pray for what, stardom? Peculiar act praying particurally when you ain't religious. Is it like holy wishing? When does a wish become a prayer is there a scale, an electrointention scale? Don't know!

Not sure what to make of this. It wasn't bad, it's just that I can't really remember much of it. Made me want to listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and this doesn't stand up well in comparison

This album kinda reminded me of Boston. I quite liked Boston on release but its shine was gone when 1001 slipped it in my inbox. I didn’t know Big Star but might have liked them back in the day. Who knows? They do nothing for me now.

Off the bat I recognised the opening instrumental to 'Feel'. I have heard it somewhere else and the song was vaguely familiar. There is something about these songs that seem so familiar to me. I might have heard them in movies. I found thirteen to be very reminiscent of the beginning of my relationship. I'm about half way and this album is okay but I don't really see why it is so special. It sounds like your typical 70's generic rock. Some of the instrumentals are pretty good but mothers than that it all seems very standard. I do like it, but it doesn't really stand out when placed next to similar albums.

Not as bad as the other album on this list but begs the question, how this band has not one but two albums on this list?

Best Song: Feel. I liked the brass, even if it gave a false impression of what to expect on the rest of the album. Worst Song: In The Street. Perhaps unfair, but after hearing the cover version that's used as the theme song for That 70s Show, this version just feels weak and wilted. Overall: Music that sounds old. Like the Eagles but worse? Without That 70s Show, would likely have faded into oblivion.

This album is the audio equivalent of going to a restaurant named "Top Chef Fine Dining" and ordering a meal called "Taste Bud Explosion" and then being served boxed spaghetti with Ragu from the jar.

Had high hopes for this one but it didn't leave me with much – started off strong with some great guitar work and songwriting, but just kind of puttered into mediocrity as time went on. May need to revisit later, but for now I'm feeling pretty meh.

Not a band I've ever been inclined to check out. Feel feels like Zep without hooks. Longer than it's 4 minute runtime suggests. By the Ballad of El Good, I see the huge love of Zep. But in the same way ELO loved the Beatles. It's that concept, but with all the exciting rough edges sanded off to ensure radio play. Still carrying on on the hope this album has it's equivalent of Mr Blue Sky or Horace Wimp! Thirteen is the nearest I have come to this. It has an earnestness and sadness that elevates it.

(if for no other reason than i think i'd end up giving out mostly 5s, because art is subjective and i think most of it has SOME merit even if i don't like it. and there's not a lot of music that i actively want to turn off.) the wikipedia article suggests this is notable for having some prototypical alternative/garage sound in it, and i.... mostly don't hear it, honestly? maybe a little, and certainly not beyond what other acts were doing at the time. i'm trying to keep an open mind and listen for stuff that's notable with the idea things are on the list for a reason, because what the fuck is the point of doing this otherwise, but ultimately the final score multiplier here is 'do i like this or not'. and i did not like this. i think it's mostly listenable, with several tracks i actively dislike, and ultimately very forgettable. i would probably give it a 2 but Thirteen made me involuntarily do a jackoff motion and roll my eyes and it was all downhill from there. i respect Oingo Boingo and you, sir, are no Oingo Boingo

I wanted to like it, but it left no impression on me whatsoever. Such a let-down. Everything was boring or bland, no interesting lyrics. "Not for me", but in a way that upset me. So middling.

Seventies rock - not really my thing. First track sounded okay - if a bit Who-ish. But it didn't really progress from there or get more interesting. went by in a MOR blur. Can't hear the alleged influence on 90s indie bands, but maybe that's why I don't really listen to 90s indie bands!
