Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Not bad, but probably wouldn't listen to it again

Nice Rock album but not really specia

What's up wisconsin?? Solid album, almost good enough for 4 stars

Nice, very 70s.

I asked ChatGPT to write me the number 1 record of 1972 and this is what came out. Pretty good!

I've listened to Third/Sister Lovers a couple of times since scoring it a 3, and I almost want to go back and bump up the grade on the strength of a couple of their better songs, but the fact remains that listening to a whole album of Big Star is a bit of a slog. Same story here. Best track: Thirteen

This was fine, pretty average in my opinion. I would have no issue hearing this again, but I don't think I'd seek it out.

Meh. The only Big Star song I knew was Jeff Buckley's cover of Kangaroo - a beautiful, wistful lullaby of a song. Wasn't sure what to expect of this album and...it's fine? I guess? There's elements of Bowie, Folk, AC/DC style rock and some pleasant guitar parts, but it doesn't really add up to much. It may well have been a great example of the style at the time, but other than a pleasant melody on Give Me Another Chance, nothing really sticks with me.

un bon album rock # pop des années 70. Je comprend les commentaires des utilisateurs. Ca cruisetout le long autour du 3.75 et peut-etre 4 pour une chansons ou deux. Mais ca ne dépasse pas vraiment ca. 3.75

Not unpleasant. Some quite enjoyable noises on this album.

Very Beatles sounding after the initial Robert Plant/glam rock wailing. I enjoyed this much more than the third album. Thirteen was a standout song.

A reasonable collection of songs. Nothing very standout, the lightest of threes

Listened Before? N Ah mid 70s US rock. I haven't heard of these guys before (and with good reason). I liked this okay. It was kinda bowie-ish at times, and kinda deep-purplish at times. Honesly, kinda generic for 70s rock. I didn't know this was where the song for "That 70s Show" came from until now, so that's kinda neat. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: In the Street (single mix)

Power pop. Ni fu ni fa.

Basic pop rock album, its not great, its not bad. Plain good for me

This was fine! It felt like a generic album by a band that heard that Beatles and said “I can do that” and they kind of could but not really

It's just alright. Some of the songs could be on a soft-rock playlist, but this isn't anyone's favorite band.

First time hearing this one. I've heard other Big Star albums and this one doesn't see quite as good. I'll give it more listens - maybe i'll come around. 3/5

Pretty standard kinda rock/power pop, but it's fun. 3.5

I mean it alright

Ahhh I get it. This is the proto-group that inspired a host of pop-rock glam bands in the 70s that were responsible for awful clips on Top of the Pops with fans dancing in flares and horrible knitware cardigans. The tunes are eerie- a cross between folk and pop. Well played but without a semblance of personality. It's kind of addictive and I feel it drawing me in. I feel myself reaching for the knitware catalogue.....

starts off pretty strong but the second half of the album is kinda of weak still decent enough

Nice! Fun.

Always a cult band for the indie community. Its ok guitar rock.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Thirteen (4) 2 - Don't Lie To Me (5) 3 - In the Street (3)

This didn't really make a big impression on me, between 2 and 3 stars.

Rakkausbiisejä... Jahas... Paskaa on... Jahas............ marjatta tuu takas.. TUU VITTU TAKAS MARJATTA!!! HUORA!!!

Enjoyed this for the most part. It has the problem that other 70s albums are so much better that the sound that comes through for me is just okay. That said it does give me guardians of the galaxy vibes which does boost it a bit for me. Would be 3.5 but no half stars, booooo

A good fun time with little substance.

Never heard of this band or album before. I enjoyed it.

"I gotta have more cowbell!". Leuk om te luisteren, maar hierna zal het voor ons weer in de vergetelheid raken.

I liked them

Meh, fine but a bit dull. I found the vocals a bit whiny, but not so much that I wanted to turn it off.

I would really like to like this album but it’s a bit too much bloated 70s rock for my liking. It sounds epic but the songs aren’t really great…it was a pleasant surprise finding ‘In the Street’ though.

Thirteen was really good. The rest was alright.

fun vibe!

Pretty good, and of course the That 70's Show theme is in there.

It was fine... even good. But most definitely not great. They hit a lot of the same elements as their great contemporaries but missed that magic that pulled it all together.

It sucks ass.

It's like they are a LOT of 70's bands daddy. Only their children went on to be good. The first track made me think of Aerosmith. I had to look up to see what chicken and egg order that was. Aerosmith is older but released their first album after Big Star. Then the theme for that 70's show came on and every cover is better than the original. Then parts made me think someone listened to a lot of hippies when they were younger and that autoplay is messing with me. Turns out it was not. I really don't understand why this is your bands favorite band. This one just is there, it feels dated and in my head felt that way when it came out. I wonder if listening to this list chronologically would have this album make sense.

Never understood the hype. KIND OF novel (for its time), sure, but still just run of the mill teenage love pop. Not even really well executed, Big Star are low-energy. That 70's Show theme is on here, interestingly.

No me disgustó pero no me atrapó. Hay otras cosas que ya escucho y son parecidas, o rasgos distintivos de otras bandas que me gustan más.

This was not bad but nothing special. Seemed to straddle the line between pop and rock at the time.

Not really doing anything for me, a bit of promise early on, but forgettable

Forgettable background noise.

Good album. I didn't realize this was the group behind the theme song used for That 70s Show.

Gear: ZMF Auteur Classic LTD Shedua Artwork: ⭐🔠🌃 Production (2009 Remaster): 😐👍🆗 Music: 🧼🎸😑 Rating: ⭐⭐(⭐)/5

May have been influential and even original at the time, but it just sounds like the Byrds, Eagles or whatever else American folk rock this list already has too much of. Pretty forgettable in my book.

I totally agree with my challenge buddy on this on. The documentation suggested an awesome and important piece of the 70 rock puzzle. #1 Album, dont think so. more like a #2 (see what i did there) lol

Band name and record name suggests they're pretty up themselves, shame the music doesn't live up to the hype. I'm surprised by the high ratings for this one, very middle of the road generic rock to me.

one song and then this could have been any other generic 70s album

For me, very bland and forgettable.

Not much sticks to mind.

Listening to this obscure album from this Memphis band, I’m hearing some later Beatles, some Byrds, some Lynyrd Skynyrd (even though this album actually predates Skynyrd popularity), and a bit of Aerosmith. The sound quality is good, and the album is short. Unfortunately for Big Star, in my opinion all these songs are forgettable.

Very good album cover and title. Very 70s album. Not for me. Highlight: 'The Ballad of El Goodo' (lol)

This didn't click with me and never really got me interested at any point

Had the “That 70s show” theme stuck in my head for days after

Quite forgettable but not offensive. Nothing more to say

Hört sich wie Bee Gees an, Intressant zum Ein schlafgen eher lkangweiliug

I like Elliott Smith’s cover of thirteen

Not a bad listen but nothing to come back to

very 70s rock. quite dated.

Didn’t really like it to be honest, sorry guys.

fine enough but this album shows an issue with the list, so much standard British rock that just doesn’t stand out

Fine for OWG music. I like the That 70s Show version better.

Not really my thing. Should be flagged for false advertising.

Good but could’ve been better, felt a little random

An album that is basically half power pop tunes and half ballads/acoustic tracks, and I wasn't fascinated by neither of both sides. I do have to say that I prefer the more spirited parts coming from the power pop, as it has the most catchy and memorable aspects, with high pitched and almost screamed vocals and nice distortion on the guitars. However, I think they are quite tame in terms of ideas. I called this side memorable, but just in comparison with the other, as I didn't find it entertaining or exciting enough to truly impact me. What is truly uninteresting, dull and even empty are the acoustic driven pieces. I found them to be boring, specially the last four songs. They aren't neither emotional nor catchy nor pleasant. The only song that falls under this classification and I think is decent is "The India Song" thanks to the use of the flute (or that is what it seems to be), which adds a very folk feeling and sounds very nice. Overall, I think this is very mediocre and quite forgettable.

Big BLAND star. That is does this by straddling several styles is remarkable.

At fist I was like, I literarily never heard of this band before. And when 'In the Street' came on, I was like, hold on , this is the theme song from 'That 70s Show, but slightly worse. Didn't mind it, but I will forget about this very soon.

The only real positive for me, seems to be the fact that this album contains the original version of the intro song for That '70s show.

More rock

1/3. Pleasant, but nothing special. I knew In the Street from that 70’s Show of course, and Ballad of El Goodo was a fun rocker, but the rest just didn’t grab me. Well recorded and well performed, maybe it was just the wrong day.

Potentially the least catchy album I've listened to yet. Not a single song stuck out at all.

2.5. Very 70s AM radio.

Pretty boring :(

Schwieriger Fall, gefällig aber die Knaller-Songs fehlen. Will aber kann nicht.

Almost good, not quite, close but no cigar

That was okay I guess, nothing too special

Well its pretty much 70s pop rock slop. I had thier 3rd record before and that wasn't nearly this bad. It has the soulless gentle soft rock vibes that just piss me off. The classic 70s vocal harmonies are here too. Those are the worst of it. They all sounds the same for some reason. No matter who is singing. And another this thos record doesnt feel like it knows what it even wants to do. I get some songs that have a more rock swing to them but its like kiss who im also not a huge fan of. There are also more folky country type songs that also aren't it. They should have just picked a lane and sat in it rather than jumping around to multiple bad types of music. Its just not great. Though they do have a worse version of the that 70s show theme. Not sure if its thier song or not but this version of it stinks too. Thay was the extent of enjoyment i got here, listening to a bad version of a song that starts a TV show I kinda like a little. That doesnt get it alot of points. On the bad side. And I know they did better.

Gar nicht mein Sound. Stimmlich teilweise im Hardrock, was mich meist rauskegelt. Aber schon gut gemacht.

It got worse as time went on

As usual for those old albums that I didn't know about, it was nice but I felt I had already heard them. Probably influenced bands I know. Nonetheless I was not impressed.

Arka plan müziği olarak sevdim

This is definitely not the cosmos. 2/5

Rather dull, generic 70s soft rock. Nothing really stood out to me personally. Listenable, but wouldn't listen again through choice.

I can see why this is on the list. Isn't something I'd regularly throw on, but I'm glad to know it's out there!

Completely forgettable, if not bad.

Middle of the road rock - bland

A whole lot of nothing

Songs are fine. I can see the inspiration that they gave to other popular artists and even some modern ones like the Lemon Twigs. Nothing really stuck out to me as something I’d come back to.

This is #day517 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to some early '70s power pop/rock that I haven't heard before and most likely would never have but for this challenge. The band name and record title are so pretentious that, together, they come off as a joke. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day518.

A little generic 80s rock, nothing groundbreaking

Decent start... they should have ended the album after about 5 songs.

The whole album kept swapping between loud rock and softer acoustic. The rock was pretty bad, and the acoustic was okay, but nothing great. I’d give it a 2 for below average, but not horrible enough to deserve a 1

Well it doesn't suck enough for the one star, but everything down to the title is forgettable. Standouts: Feel • Standout

I'm going to be a little mean to this one. Perhaps meaner than it deserves. However, I have never been able to figure out why every list like this feels we need all three Big Star albums. I don't hate Big Star, either. There are many songs on Third/Sister Lovers that I like. This is the worst of the three for sure. Every song on here sounds the same and it feels much longer than 36 minutes.

If a plain bagel was an album

Very '70s. Naive (vacuous?), simple, boring. Not my taste at all. 2 points, closer to 1.5.

Not very self aware with the album title..

Yeah I agree with the lot of you. Its good classic rock, different than what gets served to us boys at a young age. But, its not good enough to be memorable. Dumb fucking song from that insufferable That 70s show. Negative points.

2 Stars. Eh. Boring.

This sounds like some forgotten 1970s indie dad rock. Why is it so highly rated? I listened to this years ago as part of some other "you need to hear these records" list, and I was similarly unimpressed. I don't get it. Baffling.

I... I don't get it. I feel like this is a me problem, but, idk, I just don't understand this one. Several times during this album I had to stop and go "this is a joke, right? this is a parody?"

Niet mijn ding

I agree with the reviews saying this is good and has a lot of solid parts but it doesn't really build into enough to stick with you in any way.

The first thing that jumps out at me is how weak the vocals are. They take away from the mediocrity. Pretty bland overall. I kind of liked Try Again. Was odd hearing That 70s Show theme, but that doesn't affect the review.

it's ok

Not that good over time

not great

I thought I was gonna like this

It's whatever, this stuff never really did it for me

this list is me slowly but surely realizing that i have a deep hatred for 70s music

This was underwhelming, first two tracks were ok but I expected it to get good at some point and never really got there. Not terrible but very forgettable.

Y cuando aparece algún álbum que aporte algo? Nota: 2.0

Never heard it, was quite enjoyable

the album has a couple of melodic highlights but spread over a album of middle of the road tunes it becomes forgettable. There’s a song about India that’s cute.

Pretty easy lostening album, very popish maybe slow rock that is just like a band at a dive bar in the background. Not a bad losten bit definitively not top anything material

Felt very fun of the mill to me.

The musical equivalent of hearing someone's name and immediately forgetting it. I'll say this is about the epitome of just fine. By no means bad, but by no means something I will ever come back to. For me this lands at a high 2.

Eh enjoyed it more than other classic rock album, some standout tracks- thirteen, the ballad of goodo, watch the sunrise. Liked the more sentimental songs I think and not like the weird take me back songs and the angry songs. I do get a kick of the singer saying he doesnt need a doctor or shrink because he has his baby if i heard it right lol but the song itself isnt good enough for me to bother if that is right lol. Think the instrumental more varied and interesting than a lot of other rock albums similar to this i guess. Overall maybe go back to the few standout tracks but just not keen to listen to it again as a full album experience.

Spotify's description of this band calls them a commercial failure, and I can hear that. It also calls them very influential, but I don't really hear anything you can't get out of the Beatles.

I really despise this kind of vocal. The overall album was a bit boring

Not for me

In the Street kind of blew my mind, finding out that the Cheap Trick song for That 70s Show is a cover is kind of wild. I wasn’t excited going into this album, but that was a pleasant surprise. Otherwise, this isn’t my style and I don’t expect to listen to this again. It’s okay.

Another one never heard of and couldn’t find anyone that has heard of them. Granted only asked two people. Anyway pop rock record from early 70. Bright shiny production. No balls. Lots of winey take me back lyrics. Corny band name and album name. I am rounding down I am aggregated with this one. 2 stars.

Like all your favourite 70s rock bands rejected songs in one disc

Meh. Boring 70s music

Bit boring

Kinda okay. For me it started strong then fell off as the album went on. 2.5/5

Ok I guess?

Alright, not super stand-out to me.

Big meh on this one. Slight to the point of toppling over, particularly in the back half. Less than the sum of its parts.

a product of its time

Didn't resonate with me

01) Feel - 6,5 02) The Ballad of El Goodo - 6,5 03) In the Street - 6,0 04) Thirteen - 5,5 05) Don't Lie to Me - 5,5 06) The India Song - 6,5 07) When My Baby's Beside Me - 6,0 08) My Life Is Right - 5,5 09) Give Me Another Chance - 5,5 10) Try Again - 5,5 11) Watch the Sunrise - 6,0 12) ST 100/6 - 5,0 13) In The Street - 7,5 TOTAL: 5,96 (60/100)

Was very generic, sounded like every other 70’s band.

Fine but very samey

Did nothing for me. Thought it'd be better. Has the theme song from that 70s show.

srednja žalost. najbolja stvar "when my baby's beside me" i ta je strana ploče generalno bolja od prve, no sve u svemu manje-više zanemarivo

Forgettable

The inception of power pop?! It's pretty fun, and I can see how it was groundbreaking, although not really my jam.

Going in totally new to Big Star, I feel their rating might suffer due to this album coming across as a bit of a grower. My attention was hardly captured for the opening half of the track-list, but by Watch The Sunrise I had started to pay attention, appreciating the very Beach Boys/Beatles harmonies and nice guitar playing. Maybe one to return to and understand better in the future!

Totally new to me. Reviews indicated a potential missed gem as they promised similarities to Tom Petty and REM. But on listening was very underwhelmed. If the aforementioned were influenced by this well they made a better job of it. Not the worse but instantly forgettable. 2/5 25/5/25 - I gave it 2 out of 5 even before I considered today’s date - weird!

It was fine, pretty forgettable

Groupe inconnu. Agréable à écouter mais rien de bien original: Pop peu dynamique. Je ne l'écouterais pas une seconde fois. =>2/5

I’ve heard the idea that they were heavily influenced by The Velvet Underground; I don’t hear it at all on this album. To me, they sound like a power pop version of a sometimes enjoyable amalgam of the Turtles, the Byrds , Little Feat, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Two little stars for Big Star.

Fun pop/rock. Reminded me a little bit of Led Zeppelin.

Fine, didn’t really wow me. Some riffs were nice, but I was mostly waiting for it to end for some reason. Probably more to do with me than the album.

Big Star comes up small

This makes me feel like sitting around in a circle with my friends and getting high.

Okay, but groundbreaking how exactly?

Anos 70 ne, achei bem qualquer coisa, legalzinho algumas musicas

It felt repetitive and the songs blurred together. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

very mid and forgettable idk

no big stars for ironic titling

No more 70s rock with lame end-rhymes please!

They’ve told me all I need to know. 5 HIGHLIGHTS: Every Song Nah we’ll start this one in earnest. I said upon opening the page “this looks like it sucks.” Why? Probably the cover. I was expecting more music in the vein of War and Curtis Mayfield, which really wasn’t doing it for me. Apparently this is power pop. I’ve enjoyed some powerful pop in my day, so hoping this really does vault its way to the number 1 spot in my heart. Guitars are part of the record. Part of my journalistic sleuthing is telling you what instruments are here. I’m hearing drums and vocals as well. Well. There is piano, saxophone and in case you were wondering, yes, this is the SNL outro music. Or at least a precursor to same. A little too jovial for me. Hey now. This is pretty nice. Has that sweet power pop melancholia and a good little song structure. The background vocals are nice. I believe that El Goodo was indeed The Goodo. That’s an expert level translation. The song probably could’ve ended a few refrains shorter, but still a nice spot. There’s been a lot of talk of “The Street,” and I’m starting to wonder where this street is. What happens there? This song feels like a thoughtless deep track. We’re only three songs in, boys. Same old thing we did last week. No! Walk you home from school? The POOL?? Mr. Big Star, why don’t you take a seat. You were obviously part of the teen chat room as “El Goodo.” You haven’t been messaging a thirteen year old junior high student, but rather our crack team of predator catchers. Now that you are firmly in our net, we have to ask, why write this ballad, detailing your obvious attempt to court a 13 year old? I would recommend checking hard drives of any surviving members of this band. Big yikes. Anyway. After the super weird pedophile jam, we’re listening to a pretty decent one. I’m still recovering to be fair. What the hell was that? Am I insane, or was that incredibly weird? God. This song is good, but ugh. I feel gross. A Christmas song about India. Buddy wants to live in the Taj Mahal, and read a few books. Classic move. This was kinda meh. Started cool but went nowhere with it. The catch of “When My Baby’s Beside Me” is that he’s talking about an actual baby. They just keep getting younger. This song hasn’t aged well. Quite boring. Booooring. Yeah this thing is losing em. The vocals are nice, there’s nothing technically wrong with the album (other than the pedophilia), but it’s just not holding me. This getting obnoxious, yet somehow still fading into the background. Not loving it. A boring outro cascades this one into the forgotten mulch heap of the 1001. Of course the auto play introduces me to September Gurls by Big Star, which is eons better than anything that I just heard on #1 Record. There seemed to be an attempt to chart with this one, while also lulling the listener into a deep and restful slumber. I heard glimmers of promise on this one but overall was left disappointed and feeling rather gross. Decent to boring songs surrounding a weird track that should have every descendant of this band banned from public school. Should’ve called this album #458 record by not that big a star. Nothing on the bone. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: The Ballad of El Goodo, Don’t Lie to Me

I really don't see the appeal of this band. Maybe I just don't like glam rock, but this album is on the whole just boring, and kinda annoying.

Tedious

I really didn't find this interesting, the lyrics are corny and sonically I was unimpressed. 2/5

This album was like that one annoying kid in high school who got bullied by everyone and you wanted to say nice things to them because you felt sad they were being bullied, but they were so annoying you couldn't. I wanted so badly to love this album, but all the production choices, as well as the vocal choices by the lead singer, were extremely grating.

2 star

Similarly to the other album by Big Star on this list, it was an unimpressive and boring show of generic 70s rock. I didn't like the album Third, as I don't like #1 Record. Well, maybe I'm glad that this list is slowly coming to the end.

The music is good. The lyrics are dumb.

This was an alright 70's pop rock album. It just played in the background, and the song that made me look up was a song that auto-played after the album, For You on their Complete Third album. I'll check that one out, but this gets a 2 from me.

boring and forgettable

Forgettable

Hey, it's the theme song from That 70s Show. Other than that, I found this pretty unremarkable. Apparently this was a super influential album, but I think it suffers the fate of many super influential but not very well-known pieces of media, which is that the far more popular works it has influenced have kinda spoiled the novelty of the original thing. If you really like jangly guitars and vocal harmonies you may enjoy this more than I did. But it's not bad. 5/10

Not so much Big Star as Dwarf Planet! Except Pluto is quite interesting and this absolutely wasn’t.

oh no way i can't believe they covered the that 70s show theme song!!! give me another chance is right in that after in the street i lost interested last song hits tho

Another example where the lone breakout song is the only one worth your time. Just listen to "Thirteen" off of this album (which is a good track) and you can safely ignore the rest.

Pas fan, pas vraiment de saveur

la canción sobre enamorarse de una nena de 13?????? sobre ir a buscarla a la escuela????? ped0 behaviour

It’s perfectly fine. There’s two or thee songs that I think are really good. Then the rest is just mediocre background music. 2.5/5

Rather average 70s US classic rock. Don't hate, just leaves me rather meh. There are other bands out there doing this sort of thing better. 2/5

Never heard of this. The release year doesn’t give me high hopes. Not great. Kind of 70s rock pop, with a dash of 60s flower child hippie pop thrown in.

Pretty bland album. Nothing really interesting. Not horrible though. 2/5 Won’t listen again

‘In The Street’ and ‘When My Baby’s Beside Me’ are the only real memorable songs on this. ‘St 110/6’ also has a really nice melody as well but is unfortunately less than a minute long. The rest of this while pleasant and beautifully produced is essentially a snooze fest.

Platonic ideal classic rock type stuff. There's nothing to write home about in complaint or compliment.

For while I was driving: 3/10 For while I was exercising: 1/10

Seriously, Dimery, stop trying to make Big Star a thing. They couldn't do it for themselves in the 1970s, but you've put 1½ of their 2½ albums into the list - for why? Are they the 1970s version of Doves?

I know this is a classic album by an influential band, and I have even listened to it more than once. I just don't get the hype, it just sounds like regular pop rock to me. Key tracks: Feel

#1 record…it was not, can’t even remember any songs off it already

Dont care for it

easy listen but slow. Harsh critic I'm giving it a 2.

#1 Record on my HATE list. No, it wasn't actually that bad, honestly speaking, it was just boring

Boring. I like That 70s Show tho

That's just an album that someone mentions, and you are like oh yeah, I remember them after thinking for a while. just fine.

Never heard of this band before today, they are not bad. Chilled out easy to listen to music. Great for listening at work or while hanging out. I'm sure that I will listen to this again although nothing really stood out for me.

Never heard of them. Sounds like 1970s guitar rock without a lot to distinguish it.

Not sure how these cats got signed. They are ok, but not good. #1 sounds like it was recorded with a boom box off the radio while your mom did dishes.

It had potential, however I got tired of it by track 5

Interesting. Almost there for me. Decent but also forgettable.

That 70s Show theme! That's fun. Otherwise, kind of a snoozefest. None of the haunting lyrics or melodies from the other album from them we heard.

This honestly left absolutely 0 impression on me.

Melodic but struggled to engage with it

Just didn't get this one. I tried to listen but it just kinda washed away.

This wasn’t really my thing. The sudden appearance of rocky Dont Lie to Me was very jarring, especially as the next song is almost Xmas folk music, then back to rock hooks after that. Then In The Street literally rocks up at the end.

I like Big Star and some tunes here did immediately grab me, but by the end I was a bit bored of it. I think it possibly just needs some relistens, sometimes when I hear an album for the first time, it doesn't click - you need to get familiar with the songs. For now I give this a 2, but that would likely change in future!

Solid 2. Not a single song will be remembered tomorrow.

Not my favorite

It's okay. Not really my jam

Nichtssagend.

A bit cringe ngl

Twee bollocks

I dunno who these guys are. Sounds a little familiar, but are they one hit wonders? Sounds like Saturday night feel good music to listen to when you go out cruising with your friends. I'll give 2 stars.

i've never listened to kiss, but i imagine it sounds like this 👎

My first thoughts while listening to this: "Smokie - or what?" Just ok. But nothing special or remarkable for me. 2,5

Boring album, nothing really original or captivating. If you've heard the Beatles or the Stones you aren't going to find anything new here.

Nice album - can't see the uniqueness to be placed in the 1001 list

This stuck with me better than Third. I think it's the influence of Bell. Still not quite feeling Big Star though. Much better listen at work than in the car - perhaps too trebley?

Calling this a number one record was probably a bit overzealous. It's an alright record, but definitely not in the top 250 of this list.

I’ve tried multiple times. I just can’t get past the straight up wuss rock. I get the influential nature but no thanks.

#1 Record is a bit of a stretch. It’s very poppy, in more modern way than you’d think for 1972. It was probably ahead of its time. Big Star seems like a bit of a poor man’s Boston. Radio friendly rock but without the absolute bangers. Or really any bangers. 5.8/10

I enjoyed finding the theme song to That 70s Show on this album, but I don’t think I found much else to write home about. Forgive me - I think I like my Alex Chilton a bit more aged.

The 70's Show theme! You can hear how this influenced future artists...Kiss formed a year later. Aerosmith's debut was also a year later. I hear White Stripes in there too. Also some dumb stuff I never need to hear again.

Hey, that’s the theme song from “That 70’s Show!” Only not quite? I wonder how much Big Star gets from their song being covered for the intro of one of the most syndicated sitcoms of the last couple decades? It’s not even their version used, but it’s still their most lasting legacy. Which is a bit sad and underwhelming. It might be their “#1 Record,” but it’s not a #1 record.

Mid southern 70s rock

2/5 We have Led Zeppelin at home

Hatte nicht das Bedürfnis, es zu Ende anzuhören

A smorgasbord of musical ideas from the late 60's and early 70's, good, but not original. Really just aping what a bunch of the big groups were doing at the time, but even cover bands choose one artist to emulate, not all of them. 🐒🐒

Habe ich so nebenbei weggehört. Ist OK. Two Stars.

I'm sure that this was well-received in 1972. And maybe they were inspirational to many bands, but to me, in 2024, it sounded like a parody band - a "Spinal Tap" of what a pop-rock band should sound like. Read up a bit on them, and it truly sounds like a Netflix show about a struggling rock band. (Inspiration???)

Not that great. 2 stars.

Bit all over the place. Has a random bardcore track in the middle.

Alright....

Música divertida

This was a bit of a slog. It just doesn’t speak to me. Can see it’s value but I liked maybe one song?

The only notable thing on this album is the theme song from that 70's show. A forgettable album from a forgettable band.

Starts strong but quickly starts spiraling downwards, a shame really

Don't really understand the hype of the album by some critics. It sounds a lot like many of the songs from the early-mid 70's.

OK, it's definitely music, but am I supposed to find this special in any way?

Doesn't sound very special to me, but I don't mind listening to it. Favorite song: The India Song

Hey, this has the song from "That '70s Show." I knew Cheap Trick performed it for the show, so I'd always assumed it was one of their songs. Finding it here was a pleasant surprise. The rest of the album was...interesting. 2.5 stars.

Standard British rock/pop without anything standing out. 2/5

It was fine. Kinda like led zepplin but less bluesey.

Miksi osaan Thriteenin sanat? Onko Big star isompi bändi kuin osaan olettaa? Aika plääh mutta tyylipuhdas.

This album influenced many bands that I love, REM, Guided By Voices, Wilco, etc, but it’s just never clicked with me. The songs are too spare, too mid-tempo — all just a bit short of hitting critical mass. Radio City is much stronger to these ears.

Singer sounds like Pink Floyd Kinda funky and banjoish and old sounding? Thirteen was my favorite The India Song sounded like a Christmas song Overall sounds like it'd be played in a Logan's, 3/10 on the listen again scale

Average 70s soft rock, not bad, not memorable.

Got to admire the confidence in the band name and album title. Doesn't quite live up to it really though, it's a decent enough listen but very generic 70s rock, not enough oomph behind it to give it a good score. 2/5.

it is absolutely no surprise that punk happened in the 70s. i would have lost my mind when access to music was way harder than it is today and the world was awash with this type of wank.

Fun fact: Robert Plant's favourite from this album is When My Baby's Beside me. He's a big baby noncer.

Not bad but didn't do much for me

this album bored me to tears. i am crying right now and i blame big star. damn you, big star. damn you.

Not quite the blueprint for Teenage Fanclub that I was led to believe. This is more like a US version of The Sweet. It's good, honest rock 'n' roll. Nothing wrong with that. But nothing to offer much hope with, either.

Some positive moments but almost copies other artists.

Noisy shit kinda like a Boeing 737-800 flying over my house: I just don't notice anymore

Listened, but it didn't register, who or why are Big Star? Should I listen, should I pray, pray for what, stardom? Peculiar act praying particurally when you ain't religious. Is it like holy wishing? When does a wish become a prayer is there a scale, an electrointention scale? Don't know!

Not sure what to make of this. It wasn't bad, it's just that I can't really remember much of it. Made me want to listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and this doesn't stand up well in comparison

Hadn't heard of before, doubt I'll hear of again.

This album kinda reminded me of Boston. I quite liked Boston on release but its shine was gone when 1001 slipped it in my inbox. I didn’t know Big Star but might have liked them back in the day. Who knows? They do nothing for me now.

Off the bat I recognised the opening instrumental to 'Feel'. I have heard it somewhere else and the song was vaguely familiar. There is something about these songs that seem so familiar to me. I might have heard them in movies. I found thirteen to be very reminiscent of the beginning of my relationship. I'm about half way and this album is okay but I don't really see why it is so special. It sounds like your typical 70's generic rock. Some of the instrumentals are pretty good but mothers than that it all seems very standard. I do like it, but it doesn't really stand out when placed next to similar albums.

Not as bad as the other album on this list but begs the question, how this band has not one but two albums on this list?

Niet helemaal mijn jam, maar echt slecht was het ook niet.

Gezapig.

2/5 Best: Don't Lie To Me Worst: St 100/6

Best Song: Feel. I liked the brass, even if it gave a false impression of what to expect on the rest of the album. Worst Song: In The Street. Perhaps unfair, but after hearing the cover version that's used as the theme song for That 70s Show, this version just feels weak and wilted. Overall: Music that sounds old. Like the Eagles but worse? Without That 70s Show, would likely have faded into oblivion.

Underwhelming lyrically. Some nice riffs.

Only mediocre.

generick rock, nothing to remember it by

Jag vet inte...

This album is the audio equivalent of going to a restaurant named "Top Chef Fine Dining" and ordering a meal called "Taste Bud Explosion" and then being served boxed spaghetti with Ragu from the jar.

Had high hopes for this one but it didn't leave me with much – started off strong with some great guitar work and songwriting, but just kind of puttered into mediocrity as time went on. May need to revisit later, but for now I'm feeling pretty meh.

Sounded like a cross between The Who and Status Quo... but not as good as either of them

didn't get into it

Generic

Tragically boring

meh, imagine this was better at the time

Dated. Does not really stand out

Not a band I've ever been inclined to check out. Feel feels like Zep without hooks. Longer than it's 4 minute runtime suggests. By the Ballad of El Good, I see the huge love of Zep. But in the same way ELO loved the Beatles. It's that concept, but with all the exciting rough edges sanded off to ensure radio play. Still carrying on on the hope this album has it's equivalent of Mr Blue Sky or Horace Wimp! Thirteen is the nearest I have come to this. It has an earnestness and sadness that elevates it.
