Reviews (page 11 of 13)
This is fine. A few standout songs
never heard of them, but not bad
Listenable. But not raveable. Pretty good overall.
I love his voice but it's just not a vibe i'm looking for
Fun album, the one that comes after is better, but this one really shows off what this band would become known for. 8.2/10
A little more melodic, at times, than I thought it would be. But...eh.
Every time I hear Muse again I think 'Oh right! Why don't I listen to these guys more' and then I make it halfway through an album and remember exactly why. They are a great Playlist band. Good in small doses but an hour's worth of Muse just gives me a headache. Much like their overall career, the opening tracks come out so strong and it just falls off after that. A lot to like here but a lot of grating and repetitive lines too. I've never cared for Knights of Cydonia either so that track is not enough to make up for Exo-Politics, Hoodoo, or Glorious.
Super novel, well put together but I can't say I like it for much more than that
This was OK...didn't hate it, didn't love it. I found myself engaged in other activities rather than active listening.
Was okay. Not my thing
I.e. twilight’s album. I think I liked this more than I anticipated. Great running music
I was never super fond of this album and supermassive black hole. I actually disliked how it was played at so many sporting events. Origin of Symmetry was better.
never been my cup of tea
Interesting combination of genres. So.e songs remind me of The Call. Not a long term listening album for me.
The begining of muses precipitous decline into too much prog nodduling and conspiracy weirdness.
Pretty good album but nothing really grabbed me. 3 stars
Solid album back in the day but hasn’t aged well
Muse is eh.
Muse rockt 🤘
Just ok
This sounds a-lot like fuzz-bass Radiohead, but I liked it.
Was only just okay for me
Okay, så Guro ELSKER muse. Sånn…favorittbandet hennes. Jeg er helt ok med muse. Bra album, bare ikke helt for meg🤷♂️
liked more the earlier muse 3,5
Kind of like U2 but a little quicker and more synthesized.
sci-fi coldplay innit
A whole lot less rock than older Muse tracks, with hints of Depeche Mode on a lot of the tracks on this album... but not as well executed and very... meh! The best track on this album, for me is Starlight. I have alwsys had a bit of a love hate relationship when listening to Muse, and it's aligned with my own mood. When I'm in Great form I'll have a few Muse numbers thrown into my playsuit, because they're not a bad group, I quite like many of their tracks.... its just I find they can get a bit depressing, which is why I relate to my moods, so if I'm down... I ain't gonna play these guys.
It was a fun listen, have always enjoyed Muse but stacked up against other similar artists during that period it isn't as consistent
Why don’t I love muse ? Despite being someone who listens to a lot of alternative music, they just don’t really hit the spot for me but I can’t deny that supermassive. Black hole is a great song and this album is still pretty good.
An OK passive listen. Epic sounding. But once you have heard it once it feels like it has nothing more to give.
It was okay
Kinda cool/corny
Interesting stuff - sound like a poor man's Radiohead.
Not crazy, some cool songs but I felt like some of the songs could have been shorter, the grooves they were exploring were just not cool. Other songs they could have extended!
Surprised how many of these I recognised. Good overall but limited vocals start to grate towards the end.
I am really hit or miss with Muse. A lot of their earlier stuff was super riff heavy with a little operatic flourish thrown in. But they seem to be trying to turn into Queen... And it's not working for me. This record is okay. But there is a lot of wasted space in here and I think it's trying to be more profound than it is.
I’m giving this 3 but I don’t know why. I don’t particularly care for Muse…and I don’t know why. They’re a talented band. Matt Bellamy has a good voice. They just don’t do it for me. I guess I’m giving it a 3 because I understand they are talented and a 2 feels cruel.
There's a lot to like about this album. It's also... a lot. Stylistically this feels like Muse were going for a really big, diverse sound, but ended up with something more haphazard. When they get it right it's really excellent. Soaring, earnest vocals. Intense, richly composed arrangements. Where they don't get it right, you get weird tonal shifts and over the top lyrics that land like a lead balloon. You know, if they had reworked/dropped a few songs, this actually would have made a more cohesive dystopian concept album. Instead we get an overstuffed album that's not sure what it wants to be. Fave Songs: Soldier's Poem, Invincible, Exo-Politics, Hoodoo, City of Delusion
lol I always thought starlight was a Coldplay song. Granted, one of their better ones, but still, sorry, Muse! Didn’t mean to do you like that. Stain on me. Rest of the album was cool.
soldiers poem rips off ave maria i cant help falling in love with you and queen and is somehow worse than all of them how come this album is largely objectively good but i hate it god invincible is lame
Not my style
Enjoyable. I think if there wasn't a slight dip in the middle, this could've got 4.
Enjoyed some of this.
Meh
This album starts as epic rock with almost synthetic undertones, sounding like a cyberpunk soundtrack. It then switches to alternating ballads and more traditional hard rock tracks. I liked the cyberpunk, I am sad the didn't stay in that space for the whole album. Shoutout to then for one of the best album openings i have heard though. Favorite track was map of the problematique.
Cat: this is like of early Radiohead and later Radiohead had a baby. I like this a lot. And then they turn into the Killers? Crazy.
liked it! muse has some bangers so glad to be reminded. I liked City of Delusion and Soldier's Poem
Nothing exceptional here.
These Radiohead wannabes just dial it up too far too often, so their blend of classical style chord sequences and bombastic big sound just sound so so same-ish. If you've heard one Muse song, you've pretty much heard 'em all.
Meh
pretty big sounds that I'm not particularly used to but, surprisingly, I kinda enjoyed it. Quality dipped halfway through the album only to increase drastically for the final four tracks, all of which I quite liked. Very 2000s teen vibes. favourite track: 'Knights of Cydonia'
Like muse but some songs better than others and had a few I just skipped
Goated Muse album, so many classics. I did find a few of the songs to be a little underwhelming, but overall good.
starlight is cool
Decent rock
In high school I thought this was the coolest album of all time. Listening to it again, it makes complete sense why a high schooler would love it. 3/5
not my fav album of theirs
I liked this alright
2.5/5 Feels like some weird bridge between Bowie and MGMT I didn't know existed. Except this bridge has a detour to U2 land (oh no!). I'll round up to 3 stars because some of these songs were almost pretty dang good, ruined by vocals and lyrics. The first song "Take a Bow" (4/5) had me taking this album as serious surprise, the vocals on "Starlight" (1/5) completely shot dead that tiny momentum. This trend would continue until the 7th song, and pick back up with the 8th. Vocals and lyrics just never seem to match the tone of the music. Shame, the music has a lot of promise. Overall, the album has an ungenuine uniqueness that sounds like they were competing for the Transformers franchise. But hey, still unique! Musically they are still unique, mostly in a good way. I think they would be cool to see, but mostly in the way that spacey rock can be cool to see live. Its not for sustenance.
not my thing
Muse is iconic. Black holes is a great album. 8/10
I liked this album a lot better when I was a teenager. Someone pointed out to me once that in between each line Matt Bellamy takes a huge breath, and now that's all I can hear when I listen to Muse. Knights of Cydonia still slaps, though
If U2 tried to make a Radiohead album, you'd have something like Muse. That may sound cringe worthy to many people but the end result is varied, bigger than life, and worth a listen. For my money, Muse is not Radiohead and it's debatable whether they deserved a place on this list. A few songs really stood out though, like Map of the Problematique and Knights of Cydonia.
i know nothing about muse, except for the fact that theyre one of those generic bands from the late 90s and 00s, which is a kind of music ive been lately liking more and more so this might impress me. i hope im not offending muse fans with this but it sounds like a more industrial version of radiohead. more eletronic, more pop and way more dense, with all the vocal parts and beats of synthesizers that sound like a rave soundtrack. overall it had some great moments, no bad songs here, but not really my thing. great travel soundtrack tho.
I’ve never listened to this album in full but I know it has some lovely, well written songs. Epic sounds. I ran out of time to listen to it properly. Hopefully, I’ll get to it over the weekend and rewrite this if I can.
Well received solid rock, though I've never personally connected with Muse.
It's giving a less-boring Coldplay. I can't think of anything but Twilight when I hear SBH. This music is not bad on a Monday morning. Rating 3 stars.
Not my style but I love Starlight
A few good singles, that touches the sadness and gets you also powered up.
the hits are as good as i remembered but it’s just a decent album before muse went full queen and ditched wanting to be radiohead
Enjoyed, one track was superb, the sounds and style I love, the rest were really quite enjoyable. I'd remove one or two tracks that didn't agree, but entirely satisfied with this new discovery ...
very VERY good range omg. every song is different
Very English
Some classic Muse on here. Was I blown away by this album. Not quite.
This is when I kinda got off the Muse train. It’s a bit too pop and predictable to me. There are some standout tracks but as album there are better Muse records imo 6/10 1. Good open- loved the keys 2. Transition into this track wasn’t as epic but the track is decent. Standard Muse but nothing wild imo 3. One of their sexist rifts ever. This sound screams sex appeal and I love the riff. The bridge isn’t my fav but overall fun track 4. Nice 80s worship 5. I don’t understand the way these track are laid out. The flow is OFF 6. Pretty meh to the bridge. The noodling is great. 7. Finally a riff to chew on. This rocks 🤘🏾the beginning sounds like the knight rider theme tho lol 8. Mid 9. Ok they cooking again 10. This track is cinema 11. The reason this album is on here. One of the most epic songs ever 12. Meh closer. Knights should’ve been the ending track. It’s too epic to follow
There's a lot going on here. Knights of Cydonia will never not go hard, but you have to get through a bunch of Ford pickup truck rock to get there.
Only knew Knights of Cydonia before from Guitar Hero and maybe Starlight once or twice but I never listened to any other Muse songs. I guess this is their "magnum opus" and if so, Muse is not my thing (but KoCydonia rocks!) The big singles are quite good but the album feels very samey and idk the singer holds notes way too much... listened to it three times and I give it a 2.5, rounding up to 3
Solid album, but a little 1 note throughout. Probably very fresh for the time. Hypnotic style. 3-4 songs very good. Rest were 1 note.
I have heard it before, not a big muse fan anymore
Mid 00s rock is mid 00s rock
I feel this is the moment when Muse sort of lost their way. Bland soundscapes and bombastic instead of edge and great songs. It's still a good album, and stands up against a lot here but I don't think it's a great album.
Muse is another modern rock band that I've seen live (Osheaga 2017). I actually am not super familiar with their work though, and the two songs of theirs that I do know are not on this album (Uprising and Madness). I thought this album started really strong, I liked the first two songs a lot and the third song (Supermassive Black Hole) is one of their more popular songs (though I'm not quite so high on it). Starlight is song #2 and is my favorite one on the album. It's a great example of a piano/keyboard carrying a rock song (also the case on Hoodoo). We also know by now that I love the slow song in the middle of a rock album, and Soldier's Poem delivers (it sounds a lot like a Queen song to me). Overall though, I thought the album was good but something about it just doesn't blow me away. After the strong stretch at the beginning not as much stood out to me, and I think they have a bit of a sound which makes a lot of the songs sound the same. Perfectly good modern rock with a few plus moments. Favorite song: Starlight Other: Take a Bow, Supermassive Black Hole, Soldier’s Poem, Hoodoo
It’s fine. Starlight is a pretty good song and the strongest track on the album. Has it been in a car commercial or movie or something? It sounded familiar. I was surprised to see Lightning Bolt listed as an influence in the wiki description, but on close listening I guess I can hear some elements that slightly overlap between the two bands. Honestly, I ended up skipping through a few tracks, and instead spent the rest of my lunch listening to some of my favorite Lightning Bolt songs, including but not limited to: Dead Cowboy, Assassins, and Ride the Sky.
Pretty so-so. Lots of moments here lots of other bands have done better (Radiohead, U2, Rush.) Not bad but I probably could have died without hearing it
It was nice to get an album that was more recent and one I was not familiar with. Unfortunately, I don’t typically enjoy this type of music. I’m not sure what you would call it, but it’s a sound I most associate with Pet Shop Boys. It’s just not my thing. I did quite like Supermassive Black Hole, though.
Not as good as I remembered from beginning to end. Some great songs but also some real stinkers
Was aright I may need to comeback and relisten to it again.
A good cohesive album with a strong opening. However no song particularly struck me as anything different
It was ok. A but too much Theater for me. But they are great musicians that’s for sure
Good for what it is, not my favorite flavor.
Erica would take all the leftover stars and throw them at this album. For me... it's nice, but it's spice, not an entree.
Some good songs some poor ones still like the album!
not my style.5.7/10
3.5
Never gave Muse much of a chance in high school. It’s not terrible but not the best thing I’ve ever heard
Not my taste but still good music Starts strong and gets weak
Some songs were great while others just kind of missed. 7.5/10
Hasn't aged well at all. When it was released it was fresh, innovative, and authentic. Now it just feels plastic and derivative. Still three stars though.
Sounds ok, radiohead 2.0. Tunes are pretty good.
I like the overall sound but most of the album feels like background music to me and won't be in my rotation much.
I wanted to like this, but outside of the Supermassive Black Hole, and some aspects of some tracks, I don't get Muse's style of music. I kinda really hate when I can hear the vocalist breathe. Maybe it'll get better someday though. 3.5 stars. BT - Supermassive Black Hole - Map of the Problematique - Invincible - Assassin - Exo-Politics - Hoodoo
3/5. Album had some great pace. Towards the middle got a little off track when it comes to the type of music I’m into, but they end great with Knights of Cydonia, my favorite Muse song.
I don't think Muse are a bad band and this album was totally fine as background music. But I really can't warm up to the vocals, which just sound extremely whiny to me.
3.5
It was ok. The second half of this album saves it the first half did nothing for me.
I expected to like this okay, but I actually liked it more than I expected.
Not as cool as Liz Phair.
Nie moje klimaty
This album was okay, but what seemed notable at the time has not stayed that way - I don’t think it belongs on this list. Best tracks: Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole
I kinda don't like this. It's not the worst thing I've ever heard, but I've heard this kind of sound done way better before and because of that it's not attracting me like something like Gorillaz, Smashing Pumpkins or Linkin Park. It's just barely on the middle of the fence for me: It's not bad and it's not good, it's mid.
Childhood nostalgia doing some heavy lifting here, I'm not sure how much I would like it if I listened to it today. Knights of Cydonia still bangs though
Never quite got Muse
I think this too tightly tied to my teen years for me to enjoy properly now.
Listened Before? N This one is pretty okay. These guys give me the sense that they think they're a lot better than they actually are, but they've got some decent songs and structure. They keyboards add something to it, but Scandinavian bands have been doing this for years. In fact, that's what this album reminds me of: lots of Scandinavian English-language rock bands. Added to library? N Songs added to playlist: Knights of Cydonia
Absolution is a 5* for me... this just doesn't cut it for me in quite the same way - sorry lads
A tad overblown
It’s obviously great
Ben thought 2, Monique thinks 4
I should love this. For some reason this doesn’t connect. It’s on me. Not them. Bonus star as an ‘I’m sorry guys. It’s not you. It’s me.’ Can’t even tell you why.
The only track by Muse that I’m at all familiar with is their cover of the Tony Newley/ Leslie Bricusse classic, Feelin’ Good. Apart from that, Im unfamiliar with their catalogue. I enjoyed this album. I guess they were really popular by this stage because they sound like a band who know they’re big & are gonna take full advantage of it. There’s stuff here that verges on the pompous (Tracks 1, 4, 6 & 10) but it’s musically so good, I have to give it the benefit of the doubt. I really liked the slower Soldier’s Poem & the Prince impersonation in Supermassive Black Hole. A good listen.
I came into this album thinking that it was going to be a snoozefest. I really havent been a fan of Muse in the past and really didnt know any of their songs with the exceptions of Knights of Cydonia and Hysteria. I was actually suprised of how much I didnt hate this album. Yes it is a very noisy album and yes its dramatic af but I think that benefits this album more than anything. This album felt really cinematic and made me think of different movie ideas for different songs. The only thing about this album is that the first half definetly carries and the second half feels a bit repetitive, with the exception of Knights of Cydonia. If I had to pick one song, it would of course be Knights of Cydonia. I love the vibe that the instrumentals bring and I really dont mind the singers dramatic voice. It made me think of space cowboys, mixing that vibe of cowboy and psychedelic spacey music.
It’s little overdramatic at times but I liked this more than I expected. I’m probably gonna give it a 3 but I enjoyed listening to it and there’s a good number of songs I’ll add. I could also see people say that this is a radiohead rip off but I’m not a Radiohead nerd so that doesn’t matter to me. I said it to Pat already but this album sounds like an edgy version of the killers especially on Starlight and a few other songs. For some people that’s probably awesome but idk if it’s quite my go to sound. The singing is on point the entire album except for the weird high auto tune at the end of the album. Really all of the instrumentals are well done too if you’re into that intense sound. I do like how soldiers poem breaks up the high drama songs too and almost sounds like a beach boys song at the end. Good music for the gym so I’ll come back to it for that. 👍:starlight, soldiers poem, assassin
I feel like I’ve heard every song in this album before. Not sure exactly why but i feel like this sounds like everything else in their sub genre. That being said, I still liked it. It had a lot of big epic compositions which was pretty cool. Maybe gets a bit stale. For the first half of the album i couldn’t stop thinking about how they sound like U2. For the second half I couldn’t stop thinking about how they sound like this one song I had in my head(turns out it was actually a song by them). Bryce said something about “AI generated music” when talking about this album and I kind of see where he’s coming from. On a deeper level, this album does absolutely nothing for me. Like there’s no emotion or passion here, just music. The music is fine and good but it just doesn’t make me feel anything, which is equally important. Between a high2/ low 3. Leaning 3 Best: honestly no idea everything sounds equally good/bad to me. MMM: HOLD YOU IIIIEEEEN MY ARMS I JUST WANTED TO HOOOOOLD YOU IIIIEEEEEN MY ARMS
Good
The best soundtrack to a nonexistent mid 2000s action film. I was surprised how much I loved this.
A very cool blending of genres and styles. Hard rock, electronic, spanish influence… it’s got it all. Knights of Cydonia is a classic. Map of the Problematique is prob my favorite from the album. But while it’s got a cool blend of everything it’s just that… it’s a little generic.
They are kinda lame for sure but I respect how good they are at arena rock. This sounded kinda spacey at times too which was cool. Vocals got a little tiresome at time but fuck it, this is decent. 3.5 stars
This album fell off the original list because it shouldn't have been on there in the first place. Muse represents a generic sound from the early 00s that you can play and struggle to name the band because they all sound the same. Black Holes and Revelations is an okay album and nothing against Muse, but a list of albums you should listen to before you die shouldn't include groups that all sound the same. 3/5.
3 stars, meh
Sounds like a poppy Radiohead with hints of prog metal. It's fine enough but I never need to hear it again
not sure if it's giving its a rock album by men🙄 like ... but its ok i guess
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Blend of lot of different styles. 3.5
Slick production and a big sound. Not one I like, but I can see how some would. Didn’t find it special.
More Prog then i normally listen to. Not bad though. Maybe a little long in parts.
It is pretty good at times, a bit mathy and proggy, but alright. It feels like the band was mostly interested in making something EPIC and IMPORTANT, and sometimes it does, but just as frequently it seems grandiose.
I guess, fine. It's like a slicker more pop-oriented version of later Radiohead?
Snappy, I dig it but not enough for a daily listener.
Good album. I like it overall 7/10
That’s some epic whining.
oldie, twilight zone
It has its moments, but I wouldn't say it's their best job.
Takes me back to listening to my iPod shuffle on a family road trip to Port McQuarie - lot of good memories for this record. Not a bad rock album overall - some forgettable tracks I suppose but just as at home with with absolute ear worms and epic moments. 3 and a half. Fave track - Starlight (for nostalgia’s sake)
This album and this band are good but not great.
Great
Couple of classics in there.
My gen-x former boss would fire me if she knew but Muse is overrated imo. Too navel gaze-y for me. Arpeggios are fun but what else you got?
An album not worth the hate it gets. U2/Radiohead/Coldplay inspired rock with an EDM edge.
College-days throwback... not sure how I missed this one. A couple of the songs are familiar from the radio, but for the most part, it's standard Muse. Enjoyable, energetic, and catchy, but repetitive at times. It sounds like they were trying to balance the harder rock themes of the time, meshed with melodic harmonies (ala Coldplay), and a few grandiose prog-rock anthems... that shift into predictable rock-pop. I wouldn't turn it off immediately, but I don't see myself revisiting this album often.
Some high highs and some lower lowd, all around a good album
While it’s pretty much Muse’s “Kid A” (to an abundantly similar degree), this album has enough to set itself apart to still make it an interesting, progressive release for rock music. Favorite Track: Solider’s Poem Rating: 6.5/10
I had a good time listening to it. The singles are overplayed but they're good. 3.5
Not bad. I liked Starlight a lot. Other than that it was pretty good if a little self serious. A high 3.
There are some really good tracks on this one, espacially Starlight, Map of the Problematique and of course Knights of Cydonia. As usual, their ballads are pompous in a cheesy way sadly not really interesting. There are some other hollow moments here, like Exo-Politics and Hoodoo which drags the album down. In retrospect, it marks a transition for Muse, where their energic compositions would lead to their current "big" sound and where the concept would crush the songs themselves.
Probably the Muse album that I listened to the most. Not gonna lie, it just doesn't hit like it used to. Is it just me or Muse is just my generation's U2? Anyway, it's not bad, it just didn't age that well.
Not of fan of muse, never get the hype. If I’m objective I must admit it’s not that bad.
I know this album has been important in the 2000s and is considered a landmark in that decade. Muse really made a huge hit with that one. However, listening back at it now leaves a bittersweet feeling. Too much production, too much arrangements, too much for nothing and in the end, it didn't age so well because of that.
Falls into the "I want to like it but I just don't" category. I enjoy some of the dirty hard rock moments, but I don't really like their "pop" moments and the vocals start grating on me after a song or two. I remember when some of these songs were on the radio and I felt the same way then.
If I was still in high school this would be a 5. As I’ve grown older and listened to more music, it is pretty average. This is the last solid Muse album as a whole, but you can start to see the patterns of future albums starting with horrible lyrics (they were never good tbh) and overproduction. Muse definitely has stadium rock aspirations here and while it generally works it feels a bit hollow now. Make no mistake, they are a great “live band” and Matt Bellamy is a talented guitarist, but it all feels so juvenile now. Sorry HS me. 3.5 down to 3. High points for solid tunes and instrumentation while also tainted by my own nostalgia. Everything that is good here is just done better on Absolution and OoS. Also Muse now is a caricature of themselves it’s so sad.
Nerds think this lot from Devon are possibly aliens - in fact they possibly do as well but really it's just Queen in Space. No bad thing I suppose and the singles were great to be fair. Best Tracks: Starlight; Super Massive Blackhole; Knights of Cydonia
Didn’t realize how many old hits were on this one. Not a huge rock guy so it was ok but I can see the production value and the fan support back then to now
It's just a bit meh. My least favourite Muse album.
No revelations. In fact, I struggled to find any originality - when they weren't trying to be U2 they were mostly being Queen, but there were echoes of Black Sabbath and even some Focus in there too. Not unpleasant, but it's just stadium rock - which probably sounds great to kids who haven't heard it all before - but I have, so there's nothing for me here.
Good shit, a bit long
Decent.
Pretty decent first listen but it felt very soy-core, real prog (or at least the one i like) is more abrasive. If you like bands like mars volta maybe muse will seem tame but it’s still worth a listen
The Queen influence is strong here, and generally that works in Muse’s favor. Matt Bellamy has many opinions about many things, and he seems passionate about them, but those feelings don’t always translate to entertaining, compelling songs.
These guys are talented, no doubt. However I’m not sure if I can truly get down with nearly every song having to be this “epic” experience. I enjoy the mixture of rock and electronic music, but I would love at least a few more straightforward tracks. Don’t get me wrong, I can enjoy epic and spacey songs, but having that constantly present does not make for the best time, at least for me. Like I said though, the musicianship is great on this album. 3/5
This album isn't bad but I likely won't listen to most of the songs again
Catchy big music that's easy to enjoy. Lacking a bit in lyrical depth and maybe suffers a bit from overplaying but still decent. 3.5
Interesting but doesn't really touch me.
A bit underwhelming, but it was still a pleasant listen and there is some good stuff here. Not something I'll spin regularly, but wouldn't turn it off if this came on.
Definitely weird, but totally enjoyable. Sort of reminded me of the soundtrack for a dystopian action film, which might be what they were actually going for.
Before listening to Black Holes and Revelations, the name of the band was the only thing I knew about Muse. I'm not sure how to classify Muse or where it fits in the overall music landscape because I cannot really define what Muse has to offer besides being some sort of alternative rock (I guess). There were tracks where the vocals reminded me of Radiohead, and other tracks that were reminiscent of some other band from the 90s that I can't quite pin down. "Starlight" was my favorite track, and the rest of the album was at least okay.
I expected to have a bunch of thoughts on Muse and whether their stuff has aged very well since my high school days when I was super into them, maybe some ideas on the distinctly Nolan-movie-style bombast, evaluating whether I still like it etc. What I thought about instead is how I never really listened very much to this as a full album, usually I just skipped between the singles. The big fuckoff Cosmic Arena Rock pieces show their age, but actually still land alright, but in between them are a whole lot of bad filler pieces that really drag the whole thing down
Zanimivo
Some cool songs but not a lot of cool songs
I think I was indoctrinated to some of these songs at just the right time, because I still get a really strong hit of nostalgia when I hear “Starlight,” “Supermassive Blackhole,” and “Assassin.” And “Knights of Cydonia” remains an amazing closer. But man, the other songs on here really do nothing for me; some of them are actually quite bad. So it’s a shame, but I’ll stick to the songs I like and ditch the rest.
Buen disco de rock, con buenas voces, instrumentalmente conseguido y con alguna canción buena. No me ha llegado aun a pesar de todo
Overblown and overlong though thankfully with a decent amount of bombastic flair. I can see why some love Muse, I do and I respect that. Matt Bellamy has a great voice and is a phenomenonenal guitar player but something about the band and this album feels flat to me
I just couldn't get past how much like Radiohead this sounds, and not my favorite Radiohead either, but the earlier stuff I never liked that much. I listened to the album twice, hoping to hear more nuance, but it didn't happen. Why would I listen to this when I could listen to actual Radiohead? 2.5/5 rounded up bc I don't actively dislike it.
What a sound they have! 3/5
Really like the production of this one, cool stuff - 3.5 stars
Very good early '00 reminiscent of the Killers
3.5 stars. Had some bangerz, but also some lulls. Will certainly listen to it more
Kind of a strange one. 25% absurd bangers, 25% pretty good, and 50% almost completely forgettable. 6/10
3.5/5
Pretty good, obviously had heard super massive black holes before but never knew about the album, fun listen
Not a big Muse fan. Great live show when I saw them at Aftershock though.
A lot heavier on the synth use then I would have originally thought from only having listened to the two major singles off of this record. I liked it and I just wish that some of the songs were a little more cohesive and tight. 3.5/5
I feel like the songs definitely have a deeper meaning and i’ll have to give it a second listen. Favorite song was “Soldiers Poem.” I would listen to it this album again but maybe as background music.
Nice
Rewarding the more I listened. I don't want to have to read later about how the songs I like are about Jesus or some other bullshit.
Arpegiated synths, Queen vocal harmonies and some dirty basslines, all check for that classic Muse sound. At this point, they could still write some good songs as well so Starlight (shades of Coldplay), Map of the Problematique (more than shades of Depeche Mode), Supermassive Black Hole (Prince) and Invincible are all good, while the rest is OK. Does tail off towards the end.
I expected to hate this but it wasn't half bad. Knights of Cydonia was the clear standout, made everything else sound like b-sides, but that's a pretty high bar. I still get vaguely cunty vibes from muse but overall this is a 3/5.
Only good bc of super massive black hole
I've never liked listening to Muse. They schooled me when i seen them live...so maybe that's where the appeal lies. Album wise they are too clean and maybe even overly produced, for me at least.
The songs that attempt to be really impactful (which is most of them) kind of overdo it and they fall flat for me, but I do find the more straightforward ones to be more enjoyable
An album I was already a little familiar with, but I never listened the whole way through from start to finish until today. To me, Muse tends to be a band of highs and lows and we have a mix of those here. "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Holes" are classics, but sound a little saturated today - I think these tracks felt overplayed back then which kind of "tainted" these songs. Very nostalgic, though. I really enjoyed "Map of The Problematique" on this listen, there's a catchiness there that isn't present in the rest of the songs. "Knights of Cydonia" is a classic and probably the highlight of the album. When I first listened to the song back then, I remember one of my first thoughts being "I want to listen to this live some day" (which I ended up doing and it was great!). As someone who likes theatrical and dramatic music, it can be too much for me in this album. At moments, it even sounds vapid and souless. Mixed feelings. I don't feel strongly enough about the album as a whole to give it a 4 - as I said, there are lows and it does have some dull, uninspired moments and I just wanted to skip ahead at some points so I'll stick with a 3.
dug some of it but it sounds like the source material is queen and i'm just not into queen or queen-like stuff
Meh. Meh meh meh meh. Honestly, I liked the variety of sounds, but Muse always had a try-hard sound to me. Also, you know Starlight totally stole the melody from that ABC song, I mean, come on. Come on!
This never really worked for me. To me, Muse was an amalgamation for various influences (bands - Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, styles - rock, glam, and prog) that results in more is less. They are consistent though. Like their prior releases, this is calculated space jams aimed at arena shows. On that level it succeeds. It is almost as if AI created semi prog rock music for the masses in the mew millennium.
Pretty good, but annoying/boring at times
I find muse very similar to Foo Fighters. Good band and I enjoy listening but usually get bored after a few songs. This is fine with some cool highlights.
I enjoyed this more than expected, especially the spacey, ethereal elements, some of the groove-y guitar work, and the more experimental instrumentals. Not a fan of Matt Bellamy's vocals, which unfortunately kill it for me and would likely keep me from going back to this.
Thought this one was pretty good - a mixture of hard rock and prog rock, although some of the synths sounded too much like video games. I guess that complements some of the lyrics and why some people tagged this as "Space Rock." Liked Supermassive Black Hole.
Lots of highs (Knights of Cydonia is incredible) but also lots of lows. Felt like half the album was the same song. 3.5 stars.
Yuk an over produced mess basically a pop album made to sell a lot of records , but it could have been do much more as the tunes are there I don’t know who produced it but it’s as if the record company said we just want hits Basically Coldplay with a bit heavier guitars on it
I was only familiar with “Supermassive Black Hole” from this LP. Occasionally I would try a Muse track on one of my riding playlists, but they didn’t last too long, outside of “The Second Law: Unsustainable”. On this LP they (or should I say he) has an interesting tuned-down guitar sound that gives it a dark EDM feel. There’s a lot of different influences: symphonic metal, hard rock, prog, a bit of a Uriah Heep or Queen influence, plus heavy subject matter and apocalyptical lyrics. It's a tad bloated and ostentatious – you would hope they don’t take themselves too seriously, but they do. I prefer the heavier layered tracks like Map of the Problematique and Assassins and the crazy guitar (?) solo near the end of “Invincible”, which was needed 'cause it sounded like a U2 track up to that point.
Crazy hu de va mycke bättre i bilen än i lurar
Pretty nifty… I like the way different genres are emulated and integrated into the instruments’ parts while having a cohesive sound… the songs themselves don’t always form a satisfying whole however… and the singer would be benefit from trying less to sound like Thom Yorke… respectable 3
I didn’t think this was the Muse album that should have been chosen, bit I asked around and was wrong. It’s good, buy not my favorite.
Super dramatic and operatic.
First album of this project! 1) Take a Bow: Really liked, gives Radiohead vibes. 2) Starlight: Much more its own, memorable jingle. 3) Supermassive Black Hole: Heavier rock, enjoy the vocals a lot here, favourite so far. 4) Map of the Problematique: Nice beat here, good flow. 5) Soldier's Poem: Slower and shorter than previous songs, but a nice break from the heavier songs and nice sound. 6) Invincible: Another slower one, but I like the building into more instruments, faster progression, always like songs like this. 7) Assassin: Heaviest rock so far, probably least favourite 8) Exo-Politics: Nothing of note for me here other than an engaging riff. 9) City of Delusion: Better progression than the past two songs and captures engagement again. 10) Hoodoo: Again, slower and tries to build but ultimately fails. 11) Knights of Cydonia: Bit of a different sound, more of an alien and western (?) vibe, liking this one much more than previous few songs. Ends in a satisfying conclusion. 12) Glorious: Quite a weak song to end on, could've been placed earlier since I like the song and it builds into something nice, but not as strong as previous song. Overall, some good songs here that stand out but gets to be a bit samey in places and can definitely feel the influences of the Killers and Radiohead in Parts.
I wasn't at all familiar with this band. I certainly didn't dislike it. At times very much enjoyed it. Lots of production and earnest vocals. At times it felt like a Radiohead clone.
Super dramatic but also very clean. Too clean almost. Muse sounds like radio friendly Radiohead
I wonder which genre this is. The first song so far sounds quite experimental but sounds enjoyable Ok Supermassive Black Hole is from this album - now I get why this is on this list of albums to listen to Final notes: lots of different sounds in this album. Would not listen to it regularly but I can appreciate it
I don't know where I've been but I don't think I've heard much Muse. At the very least I don't have an opinion going into this album. I do like the Martian tableau on the front cover, though the horses confuse me a little. It all sounds great, very polished and grand. Starlight, which I'll call the title track, and Supermassive Black Hole are pretty good but let down a bit by the lyrics. I like the sound of Soldier's Poem and Assassin. Several other songs don't grab me at all, like the theremin-y Invincible, Exo-Politics, and Hoodoo. Overall like it but don't quite love it. 3.5 stars
I could never quite bring myself to like Muse, they always struck me as a Radiohead clone with greater technical ability but less heart. This album is pretty good though, it's ambitious, progressive, and very Queen in places.
A brilliantly crafted album that makes me feel things that I can't be bothered feeling anymore. It doesn't resonate emotionally like it did when I was younger, but I can't deny the artistry.
I knew two of the songs. This isn’t my usual type of music but I actually liked it. I thought it was a kind of abrupt change at track 5, which kind of threw me. I liked the faster songs better than the slow ones, but overall it’s a good album. I’ll probably listen to a few songs again.
ok
Well hello, someone wants to sit on Queen's throne.
It's muse. It's good.
I don’t know what to think of this band…sometimes they sound like U2 and other times they sound like a metal band. I’m not a U2 or a metal fan.
A pretty decent alternative album. Muse has always made some interesting music. This album definitely fits that bill. Their songs sound some what spacey and futuristic. Starlight is a solid song and knights of cyadonia has some great instrumentals. The rest of the album isn’t too much up my alley but I found it enjoyable. 5.9/10
This is an album that I would've enjoyed in Junior High. It's over the top. It's a bit edgy. Already quite familiar with the hits of this album, I went in to it expecting to be disappointed and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure this is an album everyone needs to listen to before they die, but if music like Muse is your thing, I think you'l love it.
All-around it's pretty good. The problem is that I just can't figure out what they were aiming for. I'm glad that guitar hero gave them their 15 minutes because otherwise I think they wouldn't have been on anybody's radar at all.
3, really liked some parts and didn’t care for others
classsic, not a huge Muse fan but can still respect
To be Hones
btech radiohead
I've heard of them, but never listened to anything. It was OK
A less whiny Radiohead.
I really struggle with Muse - an unpopular opinion I know. Just sounds too theatrical for me.
There's a lot here but being greedy I wanted more...Muse is always one of those interesting bands that I know their hits but have never sat and listened to a full album...bad on me.
Muse is one of those bands that ticks the checkboxes but rarely, if ever, achieves true excellence. As to this particular album, I find it OK, but... It offers such an intense presentation that it crosses over to the annoying side of things with almost every track.
Not bad, but it didn't have any sticking power with me. I listened to it twice and I can't remember any songs other than Knights of Cydonia. I do remember there's a few that have Queen vibes and that's pretty cool. Overall, it's just not for me though.
I could never get into Muse, their sound just doesn’t work for me. You want to do the mainstream Pink Floyd stuff? Cool. You want to do the weird Radiohead stuff? Also fine. But together, it doesn’t gel very well IMO. I can appreciate that they’re solid musicians and have big ambitions, but this largely left me cold. 3 stars for effort, but my personal rating is a D+
Decent modern pop
i really enjoyed this music, the first song started off with a creepy vibe and i loved it. the music overall was really interesting my critique is that it was a little heavy at times but other than that it was really good.
3.75
Meh
Already listened to it
This album is okay. I'm not a big prog rock guy, though luckily this album is not as slow and ponderous as many prog rock albums (and I'm sure that plenty of folks would argue that this is not prog rock, and that is certainly a supportable position). Parts of this is really good, and other parts are trying to be epic in a way that I find really uninspiring. I like the approach that Muse employed for this album, I'm just not super into the execution 3/5

I didn't know any of these Muse tracks, although I do know a few of their singles from other albums. For me, I think this is a group I prefer in smaller doses as the album kind of lost my interest from time to time. It is rockin' and in that progressive- or alt-rock kind of way which maybe just isn't exactly my thing most days.
Neither here nor there. Rather varied although there are some strong elements. The singer is not particularly strong but it does sometimes work. more often being almost mixed out.
It's got some of the biggest hits, and for the most part it's pretty solid alternative prog rock.
A good album. I’d listen to a couple of songs more than once.
Ostentatious opening! Starlight was dull at the time. Supermassive Black Hole sounds like Do Something by Britney Spears - this is a compliment! Map of the Problematique sounds like a Frankie Goes to Hollywood pastiche, but less fun than that sounds. Soldier's Poem is genuinely lovely, elements of Brian Wilson on there. Assassin is cool, melodic hard metal. Great fun. Invincible and Exo-Politics are a bit dull, and the conspiracies bits sit badly 15 odd years on, given the world we are now in! Knights of Cydonia is OTT fun. If Showbiz was a bit too derivative, and Origin of Symmetry was Muse finding their voice through spectacular bombast, this is where they maybe lean into it a bit too much. It has some great highs, but you can't have dessert for every meal.
Quite alright. I can see myself liking it more with more listens as it has pretty distinct sound I'd need to get my ears more used to.
Kinda good actually… surprised
Wasn't sure what to expect here. I'd heard of Muse but wasn't sure who they were. Felt like sort of a cross between Radiohead, U2, and some grunge thrown in. I enjoyed it. 3 stars.
Modern prog for modern stadia. Rocking, thumping, operatic and powerful. Music for spaceship engines.
classic
Singalong Pomp for stadiums.
gallops along like a spooked thoat
What is it with the mid 2000s and bombast? Muse clearly think of themselves as ultra-important, and this album has all the nobs turned up to 11. The production on this album is superb, and Muse at least have the chops to not settle into the grim post-Britpop trough-of-nothing that Arcade Fire, Interpol and Elbow wallowed in. This album is overindulgent, self-important and actually not that bad. There's enough variety to keep your attention, and while the pomp and indulgence means that I'll not be playing it again, I'm not reaching for the skip button. 3 stars. If it was less balls out, it'd be far more appealing.
Conhecia e gostava. Música do basebol dos vampiros.
I definitely like Muse, but there is just something about them that feels lacking. In the moment I’m enjoying it, but it never seems to stick or satisfy. They are like musical empty calories.
Anthemic and epic in scascale. Very Queen, if Queen had written a space western opera. The few times it slams the breaks really break up the flow. When it's going fast, it's killer. Favorite tracks: "Assassin", "Supermassive Black Hole", "Starlight"
The hits are still great.
Disco divertido y pues una que otra canción es pegadora, tiene punch. Sólo no sé si suene avejentado acaso, en el sentido de que es muy de su momento, pero hoy ya suena un poco insustancial. 7/10
decent.
2/5
Meh
I don't mind Muse in small doses - but I wouldn't have picked this album to represent them. Their debut was good and sounded at least 'original' - obvious links to Radiohead but their fairy dust was the tricky arpeggio work on guitar and synths. Good voice too. This album feels like corporate wanted to have some input, and the band let them.
This album is the pleasant waft of bakery bread that is pumped through to the door as you enter the supermarket. Once in, you are only left with chemical smells from the toilet and the clean-up in aisle 4. Not put off, you trudge through the endless aisles, all harshly lit by the over-bright fluorescent lighting, one of which is flickering and will induce a migraine if you stay too long. Oh, look, here is some processed fodder from some high-end brand with limited-edition packaging. I must buy that. Oh, look, here is some buy two get one free stuff; let’s pile it in. Don’t forget the impulse items at the end; you really need that sauce that will linger at the back of your cupboard, best before date long gone. Eventually, you stumble our blinking into the grey outdoors with a bag full of stuff, lighter in pocket and wondering where the time went, only to find you are hungry but have nothing in your bag from which to make a satisfying meal. I saw this band one early on in their career on a minor festival stage. I think I bought the first album. Neither thing is memorable, and that tells you a lot. Pleasant to listen to once, but I know it would annoy the hell out of me if I listened again. This is what happens if you ask ChatGPT to make you a stadium rock album when all your previous queries had been about Star Wars. See, you can get through one of these reviews without mentioning Radiohead. Oh, shit.
I don't get the big deal about Muse. They're okay, I guess. But if I wanted to listen to U2, The Killers, or Radiohead, I would just do that. Muse is just too derivative to be considered great.
Formulaic and uninspiring.
Average and only slightly bad.
It's amazing how quickly Bellamy can ruin a perfectly good rock song just by opening his mouth. He sounds like an SNL impression of Thom Yorke stretched out to an entire album. Astonishing to me how you can sing a song where you say that the president is going to hell and make it sound like an 8 year old crying about how Timmy stole his ball at recess. His singing is so overwrought and ridiculous I can't really take it seriously. Which is frustrating, because vocals aside this is a great album. It would be an easy 4-5 if it was instrumental. I generally don't care for British rock post-1985 or so but I do appreciate how they're more willing to incorporate electronic influence into their albums, which American bands seem to be allergic to for some reason. I thought the electronic music on this album was very tastefully done, except for the last track which was kind of cornball, but I enjoyed it in the same way I enjoy some power metal songs. Despite a lot of similarities to Radiohead I'm not rating this a 1 like I did with OK Computer, because 1. Music journalists don't dickride Muse like it's their life's calling, and 2. The thick, heavy guitars and electronic instrumentals are like catnip to me. I just wish they were paired with someone who can actually sing.
Confusing. It's overblown but safe. Serious but laughably silly. Couple of bonafide bangers and objectively great vocal performances, but on the whole this is bloated and forgettable
Mmm muse are not my fave sound like bad Radiohead but also can't hate on super massive black hole is a banger - didn't mind the slow harmonised song either
This was really not for me. Great musicianship and cool sounds, but I did not like this.
As a bit of a progger, I've always felt I should like Muse more than I do, which is not very much. Actually, it's not so much that I don't like them, they just don't seem to register with me even though, on paper, we should be BFFs. There's just an air of Rush/Queen-like pomp to them that makes me squirm a bit. It feels like they've been created - pieced together out of the box to be 'psychy', 'out there' stadium fillers. It's all a bit over-produced for my liking - a lot of style over substance. Their music conjures images of a live stage show full of dry ice and white strobes in lieu of actual tunes. Hats off to them though, I suppose - they've done their bit to bring elements of prog to the kidz of the 21st century, but I think they're more Emerson Lake & Palmer than Gentle Giant. And that's not a good thing, by the way.
I didn't get them at the time and an attempt to reappraise now hasn't changed that. Meandering somewhere between indie and rock it is a slice of mediocre 90s guitar pop. I'm not even convinced they are as proggy as they would like to think!? I keep thinking I ought to listen again because I've missed something. Perhaps I will one day.
Their first two albums were great or are still great. But after those it went downhill. Like a steep downhill. So this one? Nope. 2/5
No me gustó, no soy su público.
This album can definately be a vibe, depending on your mood. Not really my type of vibe. To me Muse gives U2 vibes.
Bit of a novelty act, really.
Wankers
Day 1 first time listening to this album I’m not really a rock person or any type. I wouldn’t really listen to this type of music, but I did like. Supermassive Black Hole and Map of the Problematique.
Ehh not my vibe
i dont even like rock and going through a rock album is just boring for me. though i fw the song called starlight. thats it.
Listened a lot today and honestly don’t remember any songs. I kind of liked a few as I listened but as soon as they were over, they were forgotten.
not my vibe
Some of the songs were good, but not a huge fan of the music style.
I like "big rock" but not operatic rock.
muse hate is warranted Would I listen again: nah Deserves to be on this list: not really 2.4
Major meh. I’ve never appreciated muse.
I felt nothing while listening to this record, except that it is soulless and artificial. Send it back to the factory.
A little too much for me. Enjoyed Plug In Baby when I was 14, but been bemused by Muse since then. Not my guys.
Knights of Cydonia is one of my favourite Muse tracks, the other songs are not in the same league, some are mediocre at its best. 2/5
There is nothing about this album that screams I must listen to it before I die. To me, this band sounds like Radiohead went prog.
Pretty generic rock.
