Reviews (page 10 of 13)

People like to draw similarities between Muse and Radiohead but for me Muse has always reminded me of U2. A band that has an undeniable talent for writing incredible massive sounding arena rock anthems but struggles to fit them into the context of an album and often surrounds them with significantly weaker songs. Of the handful of Muse albums I’ve hear over the years this is one of the better ones but still struggles to maintain or effectively contrast the highs of epic songs like Super Massive Black Hole and Knight’s of Cydonia the latter being in my opinion the bands best song. Starlight is a tricky one for me because it is an enjoyable feel good track but it is very cheesy and I think you need to be in the right mood or setting to really get into it. On the song Assassin whoever’s idea to add an intermittent knocking sound in the back of the mix can go fuck themselves, I must have checked my front door 3 times listening to this song, otherwise it’s one of the better songs on the album. Overall 3/5 high highs, boring uninspiring lows. As a side note if you get the chance go and see the band live. I saw them at a festival I was at and although not being a massive fan they were easily the best live act of the weekend and one of the best I’ve seen.

Solid album. A lot of it does sound the same though. 3.5

I don't think i know any Muse songs, I've heard good things. This was fine, a lot of it was way more synthy, and like digital drums sounding then I expected, but it wasn't bad. There wasn't really anything that grabbed me either though

The radio songs are still good. There wasn’t anything else that really stood out but also it feels embarrassing for some reason to like Muse?

I know you shouldn't judge a book/album by its cover, but this one has always put me off - it's very 'yep, that's right, we're the new Pink Floyd'. As other reviews have stated, it's probably more Radiohead meets Queen, and while there are some decent tunes here, it's all a bit overblown for me.

Almost a guilty pleasure but too dramatic for my tastes. A lot to like, but honestly feels a bit cringey.

Clean production and a very big sound that's meant to envelope you in the music.

This was good, but some of the songs were samey and I also don't realize the album was over until nirvana started playing a few songs after it had actually finished so take that as you want...

6/10 Operatic and super modern rhythm is awesome. there is only one queen. 5-8-2025

Twilight! its good, i enjoyed the listen but i dont think i would put it on over Radiohead when i want to hear a grown man cry

Had friends of mine who loved Muse back when this album dropped and I could not be bothered then. Listening to it now, it ain't half bad

mediocre

This album is from alternative English band Muse; I listened to the original release. I thought the first half of the album was above average (four stars), but there are a few duds in there. Sometimes they sound like Queen, sometimes there’s a little classical music in there, and a bit of Telstar from the Tornadoes (homage to singer’s father). Overall I give it 3.5 stars, not quite good enough for four stars.

Soaring vocals, electronic tracks underneath. There are a few bangers on the album. Overall it's enjoyable but I wouldn't listen to the whole thing again. I'd pick the singles and listen to them.

Enjoyed for the most part. The highs were great. I’ll revisit.

First half was great second was lackluster

Black Holes and Revelations is an epic yet exhausting listening experience, made for grand gestures. Muse's mix of rock with classical and electronic elements gives them a distinct sound, and on this album they fully embrace the bombast. The production is slick, theatrical, and takes itself very seriously—which suits the apocalyptic tone of the music and album, but at times also feels a bit over the top. Tracks like “Map of the Problematique” and “Knights of Cydonia” are definite favourites—MotP reminds me a bit of Depeche Mode, while KoC is so excessive that it circles back around to being impressive.

Last two songs: Knights of Cydonia, and Glorious, are pretty great. Otherwise fine

Eh it was alright, started off a bit iffy but ended fine. I think the favourite of this album was Invincible.

Arena Rock

It's funny that people always compare Muse to Radiohead, because my more immediate comparison is Coldplay (specifically because of Starlight). I've heard parts of this record previously, and it's pretty alright. Great cover, first 4 tracks are good, and Knights of Cydonia is pretty classic. The rest didn't blow me away, but it was enjoyable enough. Certainly stronger than what little material I've heard from them after this album.

This album has very interesting moments The riff and vibe of "Super Massive black hole" are top, I really enjoyed that song. I love songs from Muse from other records, Plug in Baby or Victorious.. They are super-talented absolutely, but I have some issues with the voice, for some reason I don't relate to it. Objectively I think it is a solid record and band.

I dig the sound quite a bit here. I didn't read the lyrics much... but the ones I did read were kinda eh. Voice is also kinda eh. I would love an instrumental of this album. Yeah. The more I think about it... an instrumental would be sick

Some iconic class songs but I thought the rest of the album was too one paced 7/10

I don't love Muse. They've always sounded like entry level, radio friendly alt-prog rock. This album is ok. Knights of Cydonia is a pretty great song 6/10 Favourite: Knights of Cydonia Least Favourite: Supermassive Black Hole

There's some interesting music throughout here. I heard a few instances of direct influence from Queen. I find the vocals irritating at times though, which is keeping me from liking it any better. Overall, not bad but not my taste.

Actually not bad

It's all very Musey.

Sick intros and endings, however, I find some of the middle repetitive and lacking. There were a few songs I really loved but most didn't leave much of an impression. Ok kind of crazy side note is that, as I listen to this album, I thought that a main theme was almost reflecting on/observing earth, almost as an outsider. And then I look on the album cover and the picture is almost exactly that. So the message they were trying to say worked. Also the drums were on point 💯

I preferred the first half over the second but overall a pretty cool album.

Good album of modern prog. Rated 3 stars because the overarching concepts were done first and better by Radiohead.

first album is way better

Listened before?: Partially Oh boy, I have really disliked Muse on previous listens (though admittedly it's been over a decade since I gave them a go). Still not loving them. I've always found the singer's voice irritating, and that's still true. It comes off as primarily whiny to me, which I don't universally dislike in a vocalist. But Muse just doesn't do it for me.

In some ways Muse should be a band I really like, great guitar work, baselines galore, quality tunes. Then there reasons why I should hate them, that grandiose Queen style over the topness of it all. Basically, I don't hate it like them that much, but I do own several of their albums and can take them or leave them. That said this album is one of their best, so it deserves a 3.

They're still just shit Radiohead and I want to fight Matt Belemy but Knights of Cydonia is a pretty good song so...

5/10 better than I expected but still noughties crap

A bit cock rock

Oof, this is tough. Never heard them before. The music sounds great, I love the soundscapes and build and some tracks just go. The soaring whiny vocals distract for me, and some songs seem to go on too long. I’d happily re-listen though.

I was assigned this album on a Friday. I'm not set up for weekend albums because I typically have too much going on, which usually means the Friday album gets a few spins, and maybe more attention than the ones from the rest of the week. I knew a guy in around 2009-2010, who was obsessed with Muse, and I never gave them a chance, so I figured that I owed this one to Cody to go more in depth. My first time through, I really enjoyed. The music was spacy, synthy, heavy, soft, all sorts of things. It's a cool album. Muse was definitely doing their own thing with this one. I was prepared to give this album 4 stars, but then I listened to it again. On the second time through, I couldn't stop thinking that this guy must have been obsessed with Radiohead, because I can hear A LOT of Radiohead influence in this album. Not a bad thing, not a bad album, but kinda ruined the magic for me.

It's interesting but not exceptional.

A little campy but I love supermassive black hole

Muse helps capture the imagination of the revolutionary-minded with the cliff notes version of how it can be accomplished with Black Holes and Revelations. While no one can expect molotov cocktails to be thrown around to the sounds of this album any time soon, it does capture the three-piece at its creative peak. Favorites: Take a Bow, Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique, Invincible, Exo-Politics, Knights of Cydonia.

Another childhood favorite. Some great songs on here (starlight, assassin, knights of cydonia) but too often overwrought/forgettable/both to make this more than 3 stars

Music sort of ok but the whining voice gets on my wick.

Pretty good. Nothing crazy. Couple songs still played today, so it has some staying power.

I enjoyed this album. I particularly like the back half more than the front. I had heard several songs off the first half, but it wasn't until Assassin hit that I really started paying attention

Sonically this album is very interesting, the use of electronic drums mixed with analog ones, the interplay between synths and guitars, and the general massive atmospheric feel to this record are all really cool things to find in an album. My main complaint with this record is that on most songs the lead singer uses a vocal style that is virtually identical to Bono from U2, and after realizing that, I don’t think I’ll ever hear this band the same way again. There is, however, one exception in “Supermassive Black Hole” where he sings in an almost falsetto tone, and I strangely find myself enjoying that quite a lot more than the rest of the record. If there’s muse albums where he does more of that, colour me interested. Aside from that though, I don’t think this album is really for me, the vocal style complaint may seem silly, but it just throws the whole vibes off for me, and I can’t enjoy it. 2.5*

Used to listen to Muse a lot sophmore year of high-school. My friend seb introduced me to them.

rock para técnicos de informática que tem tatuagens demais. muse é basicamente a parte mais barulhenta do radiohead, né. achei que seria bem pior. knights of cydonia ganha 1 estrela apenas por guitar hero 3.

Repeat listen

Not really a fan of Muse so not a band I’ve listened to much. This album only reinforced that for me. Not bad-bad but for me seemed an unconvincing mash up of early Queen heaviness (but with synths) and Radiohead wannabe quirkiness with a bit of Keane (‘Starlight’ I’m pointing at you) thrown in.

I loved how massive the beginning of this album sounded, but then it lost a great deal of its epicness, which soured the experience for me. The first four and the last track are great and pretty unique. They're overproduced but not to the point of sounding noisy or chaotic and are just extremely loud and anthemic, which I really enjoyed. All the other tracks mostly sound like Radiohead songs... and I'm not a huge fan of Radiohead. They're not bad or anything, but I was disappointed that most of the energy was lost in favor of just sounding like another band—and a band I'm not big on at that. 7/10

Something undeniably cringe about this one, I’m sorry

Lame, histrionic, arena-rock vocals make this one hard to enjoy. Reminds me of Radiohead if they never made OK Computer and developed into a great band. That said, Knights of Cydonia is a goofy enjoyable single, some of the harder songs like Assassins have some decent musicianship.. that saves it from a 2 rating.

This is why music is so fascinating. This is technically perfect. Great songs, well played, good vocalist, big hooks. And yet - I feel nothing? Maybe I needed to hear Muse at 13? But makes these guys any different then Radiohead? Something. Some undefinable thing that I am too dumb to understand. But it just aint it.

Mid noughties synth-infused rock music with grandiose gestures and mass appeal. Muse is like the more proggy British version of the killers. Somehow this reminds me more of them than obvious influences like Radiohead.

its a fun listen, i’d definitely return to it

Muse! I'm familiar with these guys because Radiohead fans are the most universally annoying people on the planet. I tried listening to the album that had the orange background but couldn't get into it. This may very well be the last opportunity I have to get into their music seeing that this is the only Muse album on the list. I'm open to giving them a try. The cover for this album is great. Another perfectly fine, listenable album. I'm not too crazy about "anthemic" music, so this album is trying to tap into emotions that I don't really feel. There are some pretty good instrumental choices on here. I like the growling guitars and genre-bending style of "City of Delusion". I also appreciate the Western influence on "Knights of Cydonia". The pulsing guitar riffs and electronic sounds that underscore the music carry the epic nature of the song quite well. "Supermassive Black Hole" was the biggest surprise of the album. Very groovy, yet it manages to work surprisingly well. "Starlight" is my favourite song as it's the only one on the album where the vocals fit with the music. If these four songs are indicative of Muse's creative direction, then I can understand why they have a sizeable following. As alluded to previously, the vocals are the biggest polariser for me. I understand the direction and intent, but I found all but one of the performances to be torturously slow and detached from the music. Very loud, too. Pipe down, Matt Bellamy,

that guys voice is a lot. . . band seems decent tho maybe better as an instrumental album?

Not necessarily *bad* but just so very, very dramatic. It's kind of exhausting, to be fair!

1️⃣Invincible

take a bow- the first half sucked ass but the second was okay. then it falls of again. 4 starlight- the start was kinda okay. 4 or 5. its just the singing parts i dont like. supermassive black hole- oh... 4 map of the problematique- 4 soldiers poem- wise men say only fools rush in. 4 or 5 invincible- 4 assassin- 5 or 6 exo politics- 5 city of delusion- 4 hoodoo- 4 knights of cydonia- 4 or 5 glorius- 4 it had elements i liked but then it would clash with something else and it would get worse over time

twilight song

Ça sonne vraiment comme du Radiohead s’il n’avait pas viré experimental, ce qui n’est pas une mauvaise chose, sauf que ça reste du Radiohead. Bon, j’me suis mêlé moi-même, j’donne un 3 pis tu te débrouilles

Love the dichotomy and transition in some songs of what I would describe as harsh, heavy rock/metal sounds into more melodic, psychedelic rock. The first half of album contains a lot of interesting and unique sounds, mimicking stuff you would hear in a sci-fi outer space, galaxy type movie (hence Black Holes in the title). Also, it has a cynical undertone as shown in the lyrics, song titles, and overall vibes of the songs. Latter half of the album has some really good guitar playing and more mellow sounds (in relation to the first half). Still cynical undertone, but more melodic sounds and use of classical/acoustic instruments. Songs notes: - Starlight was my favorite - Didn't like Supermassive Black Hole (most popular song) - Liked Map of the Problematique, Assassin, Knights of Cydonia, and Glorious - Glorious started like a video game entry and transitioned so smoothly into a dope rock song - felt like i was entering the boss level of a video game (fitting since it was the last song of the album) Overall, really really cool listen, even if I don't love the genre or style of music.

I always (fairly? Unfairly?) thought of Muse as "What if Radiohead continued their rock trajectory from 'Pablo Honey' instead of going paranoid?" The vocal similarities are there so it's not far of a stretch. This album definitely has it's moments, and "Knights of Cydonia" is still epic.

I actually didn’t like this as much as I thought I would - some great tracks but overall wouldn’t listen to again

Bdb, duzo mocnych odpalow

Twilight

An extra star for the cultural impact of the twilight soundtrack

No great shakes - reminded me of British rock bands of the 90’s early ‘00’s

Dreamy psychedelic pop

Well produced, sounds great, but… muse. Just not my jam.

Honestly i feel like all the songs sound the same. I feel like their first album i listened to hit me like a ton of bricks, but all their material since then bores me. Mad respect for this album having multiple songs with over 248million plays tho 😳

Never was a fan of this type of electronica.

this guy always sounds horny, regardless, im very biased about this album. supermassive black hole is one of my fav songs ever. i dont love all of their work but this is 100% a good one to me. map of the problematique has such a banger opening.

⭐⭐⭐ 5/10 There's only one muse album which can be considered heavily influential and that is Origin of Symmetry. What Muse does in this album and the way they continue afterwards is add way too much forced symphonic Intermezzos in the album. 'Soldiers Poem', 'Hoodoo' and ', Glorious' are three of these. Songs that structurally go nowhere. Nevertheless there are definitely some good songs on the album with Knights of Cydiona being the highlight (They should've ended with this song). Matthew Bellamy never really struck me as a good singer, which is mostly due to the *HEAVY BREATHING NOISE* after every damn sentence. His guitar skills on the other hand are impressive and sometimes even exceptionally good.

Ive always had a hunch Id like Muse if I took time to listen and I was right. Proggy and at times unapologetically heavy. Lots of styles all done well. I should spend more time with them because they are sort of a modern proggy band with pop sensibilities. Makes it easier to digest all the lofty ideas happening. I'll retuen to this.

Not Too Bad of An Album

Some kind of poppy alt rock with spacey, progressive, and some heavy influences. It’s very accessible but also not afraid to go strange places or over the top. Riffs galore, effects galore, plenty of catchy hooks - pretty standard Muse fare. I dig the heavier tracks more than the ones that sound like pop-U2 2.0. A few killer tracks and a decent album overall, but most of it I won’t think about again. I prefer Absolution to this album.

Decent

Dreary

Frenetic and energetic, it's a fun album!

Whew a re-listen but knights of Cyndi Lauper is still the beef of the bunch

its aight

That's pretty damn solid. I don't think it exactly DESERVES to be in the top 1000 but I see why it got there. Supermassive Black Hole slaps. 3/5.

I enjoyed this album. Its not a "have to have it" or "need to listen to it" album, but it has some quality to it.

Jammin’, classic Muse, quite good but not next level.

какая брба обложка! много знакомой музыки, много интересной, но их стиль и вокал всё-таки мимо (немного эмо)

A little too theatrical for me but pretty good.

Some good songs but a bit busy overall

The guitar and drums are really great throughout this album but everything else is just ok.

Just can’t really get into muse.

00’er rock, minder, et par bangers!!

It's not bad. The musicianship is fine. But there is something about music from, say, 2005-2015 that seems to conflate whining with emotional depth.

They have a signature sound, for better or worse, and this is surely their album with the most hits. The vocals can lose me at times but the tight, heavy rhythm section keeps things moving along. Starlight and Map of the Problematique are very good melodic rockers. I don't like Supermassive Black Hole as much, but Invincible is solid and so is Assassin with its quick riffing. Knights of Cydonia takes me back to the Guitar Hero days...still a great track. Glorious is a strong closer too. I'd play this again, although the vocals keep me from marking it higher.

I was a big fan of the first two Muse records and thought everything afterwards was watered down for the American market. But over time I’ve come to appreciate some of the tracks on this one and its predecessor a bit. There’s also a lot of horrible cheese on this one too though.

Muse is a band that hotboxes themselves with their own farts

A bit like aural wallpaper this one! I had it on my headphones while I read the BBC news and apart from Invincible, which I recognised, I was not distracted by it at all.

Surprisingly enjoyed some of this. 3.5

It’s okay, it’s fine. There’s some good songs on here but something about Muse always struck me as “baby’s first rebellion.” Their politics and viewpoints are so shallow and based simply on being a devil’s advocate no matter what the person in power is trying to do, whether that’s genuinely something harmful or, ya know, a vaccine mandate during a fucking pandemic. Basically these dudes are really stupid and their continued slide towards right-wing reactionary politics irl shows this!

A generous 3 as its still listenable - but they really started to disappear up their own arse here

Was introduced to Muse through the Twilight movies (lol), but that soundtrack slapped! This album has a few bangers and is typical of Muse's anti-establishment, 1984-esque rock music. Some of the drum parts go really hard and I will be learning them because they are not too hard for someone of my modest skills

Not in my edition of the book! 2006. 3 stars. The spiritual grandchildren of Queen circa 1976. Overblown and pretentious, and there is a LOT of filler. Saved from a 2 by a handful of cracking stadium rockers.

This is a pretty good rock album. I can hear the Queen, Bowie, and the space rock influences. Overall it was not a bad listen and had some good tunes.

Var faktisk lidt overrasket over hvor dybt den her var gravet ind i min hjerne! Det meste af det holder totalt!

3 ok. The instrumentals were pretty cool but the vocals were irritating. He has Radiohead syndrome. Knights of cydonia is a banger tho

I actually liked this

I like a lot of this album but I don't know if I would go back and listen again

Great guitar and bass riffs ruined by edgy angsty vocals.

Surprisingly enjoyed some parts, but samesy. Not a morning listen

I dig Invincible and Starlight but that’s about it. Muse isn’t really my vibe I don’t think. First time hearing them. Still, it’s an ok album. Listenable for the most part.

Like this record. Don't love it, but like it.

For the life of me I could not remember the song Supermassive Black Hole. The song has 600 million streams on Spotify, and it was in the movie Twilight. I should know it but I don’t, and after listening to this album and replaying that song two more times. I still don’t remember the song. This album is basically just a cross between early Radiohead and U2. I would probably rather listen to either of those two, but I can’t really fault them for playing to what works. Favorite songs were Starlight, Assassin, and Knights Of Cydonia.

Basically crooner rock. It's definitely high quality stuff, although I was never able to get very excited about Muse. It's right on the boundary between two and three, although I'm feeling generous, so going one notch higher.

2681 - This isn't as good as Origin of Symmetry, but it's probably their second best album. It is more eclectic and pop oriented, which I do think is a direction that works for them. B

It's alright more heavy than I though it would be.

Sorta like Radiohead but mid It's alright if you like that post modern experimental bullshit

I remember when this album came out and I loved it. At the time I still didn't think it was the best Muse album. However many years later, I still maintain that this isn't anywhere near the best Muse album, and overall my feelings on this album have come down. It's good, but it's definitely not great. There are better Muse albums out there, and certainly ones more deserving of being on this list than this album.

I just have never got Muse, it sounds grand but there’s no actual substance behind it, no soul. That said Knights of Cydonia is so so good, and that saves the album from a 2. Too many black holes not enough revelations 2.75/5

I really hated Muse the last time I heard it, but I will give it a chance. Turns out I still hate it.

This almost seems like something I should like, but it just never got there - too polished, I guess?

Competent vocals but that ultimately seem from a different register than the music which is hard rock with melodic almost pop lines. Some songs have great lyrics. The whole album manages to generate a motion that is quite unique.

An interesting record, and one that I feel o should enjoy far more than I actually do. There's a capable blend of genres, techniques, and styles, which should be enough to keep anyone interested. It just didn't quite click for me, though. Matt Bellamy is a very decent vocalist, and does interesting things with the guitar and keyboard, and I think the content of his lyrics is quite apt, both for the time of release and the current climate (political and ACTUAL climate). The second half is much stronger. I could learn to love this album one day, I think. Highlights: City of Delusion Hoodoo Knight of Cydonia

Alright album never heard of it; definitely glad I listened

I don’t know the technical term for why Muse doesn’t resonate with me, but there’s something about their music that turns me off. I like a couple of songs, but would never seek them out.

I get the feeling this is a better live show than an album. Every Muse album seems derivative of the last-- or the next. Dramatic, tense, anxious music on this album. I don't necessarily gravitate toward this, but I'm agnostic about whether the concert would change my mind. Overall, this was fine.

Loved it the first time through. Liked it the second time through. I didn’t realize Muse had such an edge at times.

For nostalgia reasons, I was very excited to listen to this record. Unfortunately, it's not as good as I remember. There are hits, but the album doesn't feel like a cohesive project. Honestly, the guitar work is what carries the project. Most songs are essentially filler. Best Songs: Supermassive Black Hole, Knights of Cydonia Worst Songs: Hoodoo, Glorious

I first ran into Muse through their 2001 album Origins of Symmetry. I was really hung up on it. ...and then I wasn't. Like Origins, Black Holes and Revolutions is a "hook" driven album. That's good, as far as it goes, but I will say, if you don't hear this album before you die, don't regret it.

Fairly a-Muse-ing.

Meh. Just kinda soulless. Knights of Cedonia brought back fond Guitar Hero memories though so 3 stars.

Rating: 6/10 Highlights are great, the rest of is decent. Choice cuts: Starlight, Knights of Cydonia

I agree it was probably the Muse best album, that’s not saying a lot. I found it derivative and ponderous.

Radiohead’s less talented younger cousin.

3 - I really like their one song, uprising, but this isn’t that at all. The idea of space exotic music is cool, but not for me

This one gets a big ol’ “meh” from me. 3/5

cool ig Feels like something that should be right up my alley. However this isnt really doing much for me idk why

Released in 2006, this album fit in with the inescapable pop domination of the 2000s by Coldplay, Incubus, the Strokes, and their contemporaries, writing pop songs and running them through the "make it sad" machine. But Muse was always unique, with their bombastic, electronic-adjacent style. They're at their best when they lean away from Radiohead influences (particularly notable on "Soldier's Poem", which is "No Surprises" on Adderall). I'd go so far as to call them "operatic grind metal that your kid sibling listens to" and that wouldn't be an insult; they're at their best on "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Assassin".

Verrattuna kaikkeen muuhun tuubaan tämä on suoranainen mestariteos. Hyviä kappaleita, ei siinä.

Favs: Starlight, Map of the Problematique, Assassin, Knights of Cydonia Least fav: Soldier's Poem

Interesting list of influences, personally I heard more Queen in it than anything else. Not bad at all

Wasnt my thing but they have some listenable songs

Not bad! Obviously influenced by Queen, Pink Floyd, Beatles. Some tracks are standout (“Assassin”), and some take too long to get good. “Knights of Cydonia” ended great, but too much of a windup. Bits of “Exo-Politics” reminded me of Shiro Sagisu’s stuff for Bleach. Sometimes it all sounds a bit samey.

Feel like this would go to 4 with more listens, started to really get into its vibe after being put off by the singing style.

Really fun pop/rock/prog fusion. A lot of similarities to older Radiohead.

myeah ok operatic space rock werk

Unique sound, and some of it is pretty cool, but a lot of it just gets lost in the background.

hmmmmmm, interesting

I know it’s prob not this guy’s fault that his voice sounds like Thom Yorke, but it’s a bit hard to ignore. The music’s not bad, but the production sounds corporate compared to their influences, which are kind of hard to get out of your mind, especially for the first half of the album. Like, my thoughts were essentially this until Exo-Politics: Take A Bow: Oh nice, it’s like if Radiohead did a Queen song Starlight: Oh nice, it’s like if Radiohead did a Coldplay song Supermassive Black Hole: Oh nice, it’s like if Radiohead did a Nine Inch Nails song Map of the Problematique: Oh nice, it’s like if Radiohead did Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode Invincible: Oh nice, it’s like if Radiohead did MCR covering a U2 song Assassin: Oh nice, it’s like if Radiohead did a hard Guitar Hero song

Supermassive and Knights hard carry

can't stand the band, but wasn't as bad as I thought it would be

This was a weird album. It started out slow and melancholic, only to morph into a Queens of the Stone Age style of music just under halfway through.

Thoughts before listening: Muse has some pretty good songs, but I've never really seen a reason to listen to a full album. I've watched some live videos and they definitely seem to put on a good show so maybe I'll enjoy this more than I think I will. Review: So dancey alt-rock with guitar solos? This is just okay. "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Knights of Cydonia" are the best songs here. I think I know those from Guitar Hero. Anyway, this is 3-stars.

Modernere klassieker Ben zelf nie de grootste muse fan tho Supermassive Black hole en Knights of cydonia wel hitjes

The musicians are incredibly talented, and the music itself is carefully crafted. There's something vaguely off about the album, that kind of makes it all forgettable, though. I can't put my finger on it, but once a song is over, it kind of feels like I never listened to it in the first place. This album is something that high school me would have *loved*. My tastes have changed some though. This is good modern rock, including good uses of electronics. But it kind of just ends up being good, not great. Non-zero chance I end up coming back to this at some point and relistening, but it'll be to make sure I'm not crazy, and not because I really secretly loved the album. Favorite Song(s)? Starlight

Starlight is basically a U2 song in tone and structure... its fine, but I've never been a huge fan. I'm surprised to see Supermassive Black Hole as the most listened to song on here -- I've never heard it before. Also I don't find it particularly interesting. City of Delusion really taps into a Radiohead type of sound -- one of the better songs on here. And Knights of Cydonia I know from many hours of Guitar Hero -- fun sort of electro western rock. All said this is a fine album with a few shining moments (City of Delusion, Knights of Cydonia, Soldier's Poem). Otherwise, I found it to be pretty meh. 3 / 5.

Starlight and Knights of Cydonia are all-timers. City of Delusion was a good one that I hadn't heard before. This was a unique album that isn't "all over the place" but it definitely doesn't stay directly in one lane. There is some regular rock, some grunge, and some electronic/ethereal sounds. Reminds me a bit of Arcade Fire in that sense. Never listened to Muse besides their hits before this. There were some bright spots, and few low spots, but it never really hooked me. This was close to a 4, but there's something missing that I was expecting.

I'm sure getting a lot of politically charged albums lately, huh. Hard not to hear Radiohead in early Muse, though I think that saying Radiohead is the more impactful group is the obvious statement of the century. I dunno, this album started out well enough but sort of lost its legs midway through. I was expecting it to be a little harder and rawer given the theme, but it all got softer to me. Credit where credit is due though, some various and unique musical inspirations bleed through here. Specifically "Knights of Cydonia", with its mix of hard rock with surf rock riffs.

Good stuff in here, but also some bland.

Not bad - some nice, energetic tracks on this, a little nuance and variety. It made a nice soundtrack for a Peloton workout, but nothing I am excited to hear again.

Didn’t enjoy this one a ton. Very melodramatic tone overall that never really pulled me in as much as it needed to. Vocals were way too over the top a lot of the time. A few tracks where the instrumentals did come together in an interesting way though. I could see why someone would enjoy this if they really got into the drama of each track, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. Not bad but not great either for me.

Sounds.....big

First listen. Decent.

Coldplay for hard rockers

Alternative rock. Yeah it's Muse they're ok. Origin is better even with its faults. I liked some stuff on here but overall they're kind of exhausting to listen to. 3/5

Was it a tribute to Ennio Moriccone?

Give credit to these guys. They found a formula that works for them and they stick to it. Over and over again. Starts out fairly strong, with Supermassive Black Hole being the highlight for me, and soon thereafter becomes tedious.

I thought it started out good but got bored.

Muse is a band that fits a very mood-specific listening situation. And while I have fond memories of this album when it was released, i always felt the music in general was a bit overly dramatic in what appears as a constant striving to be cacophonous or epic. Add to that Bellamy’s overly dramatic vocal delivery and I think you have a band that slightly gets in their own way. Still, there are some really good songs here and even more cool rocking moments, but my preference would be to dial back the bombastic and add in some more subtle moments.

Somewhat surprised to see this album make the cut unless we’re getting multiples from Muse, but per Spotify I guess this one has a couple of their most popular tunes. I prefer Absolution to this and while I can dig the occasional Muse song, they’re not my fave. Between a 3 and 4 for me

In 2006, when this came out, I would have given this a 5. Now, in 2024 I think I'm going to give this a 3.

I know this band very well, I think everyone probably does. I knew a lot of the songs on this album and they are very enjoyable. For some reason, I don’t get excited by Muse. I think they’re very good musicians and singers and have done some good songs! But they just don’t quite excite me.

This was peak music for me in 2006. I was all about the Supermassive Black Hole. I never enjoyed a man’s falsetto before that moment. The guitar riff made me want to dance, like the effortlessly cool astral rockstar that I was. Has it aged well? I think it’s kinda aged ok tbh. The concept of Muse has aged terribly, but isolating just this album I think it’s got some moments, some cool riffage, some bangers. There are very cheesy campy moments too, but nothing that Pink Floyd or The Who or any of a million prog bands would turn their nose up at. I prefer the moments on here when we’re doing rock music. The Depeche Mode “Map of the Problematique”, the something halfway between Coldplay and Radiohead “Soldier’s Poem” don’t really cut the custard for me. Fave Tracks: Supermassive Black Hole, Assassin, Knights of Cydonia 3.3/5

I can tell this is musically solid but just not my thing. So... three stars ofc.

this is really nice

I know a guy who thinks Muse is the best band going. It was a decent record

very mid. 5/10

Hmm, I found this hard to rate. The singles are fun but the nostalgia for this for me is being at school and everyone banging on about how good Muse are and I just didn't like them. 'oh they are musical geniuses and their music is so clever and complex', yeah okay but it sounds boring. I always thought they were the poor man's Radiohead. However, trying to listen afresh I guess it is different to a lot of stuff, very much has its own style and kind of fun but I have no interest to listen in my own time.

It does have good songs, too poppy for me. Will I listen to again: 75%

very good

U2 but a little different

some cool stuff but way too radiohead-y a lot of the time

like the singer's voice although it can get old at times. I like their style. It's different than other British stuff

The operatic sections and finger-tapping bits are too overwrought. But there are a few parts that sound a bit like hail to the thief era Radiohead that are pretty good.

3.5/5. Not really my type of music, but this is pretty decent. I did not mind listening to this, although I'd never choose to put this on.

Some would call it homage or influence, others straight plagiarism. ‘Black Holes And Revelations’ is full of nods to Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, New Order and even Queen. I’m sure there’s more I’ve missed. It’s actually amazing how many different bands and their sound Muse manage to incorporate and squeeze into this. Derivative, campy but not unenjoyable.

Nights of Cydonia carries

I've always bought into the opinion that these guys are cheap Radiohead imitation and while that's evidenced by tracks like City of Delusion, after listening to this album front to back my opinion has softened. The musicianship is tremendous on this album and there's quite a few bangers here. That said, I don't think I'd regularly listen to any of their stuff. It's good but loses a bit of the rock edge in the sauce. Everything seems too neatly packaged for what they're attempting: a raw rock album. Is it good? yes. Is it great? Nah. Standout Tracks: Supermassive Black Hole, City of Delusion, Knights of Cydonia

Wasn't great, wasn't bad. The album sounds like a late 90's soundtrack music. I still think Muse is massively overrated.

Damn, I love Muse, but never listened to this specific record in it's entirety before... Now I know why, musically it is good but not great, only a few songs that stick with me... Hope this is not the only record on this list, but this one was only ok for me...

its pretty... ok, i guess, but dont get any big ideas

If I’d heard this album when I was 16 it probably would’ve changed my life. Sadly I was almost 30 when it came out and 46 now so it’s really just kinda dorky and overwrought.

à part 2 ou 3 titres plus ou moins sympa, black holes dans l'ensemble sort la grosse artillerie à tendance progressive rock et au final je n'accroche pas. Je reste sur le 1er album... Un petit 3 sur 5.

Didn't mind it, not the biggest fan of Muse anyway though

The futuristic sound of the starship revving up blended with the dystopian lyrics make for an interesting album. I like each individual song better than the album as a whole. Knights of Cydonia and Starlight come across as the best songs. Wanted to like this album more than I did. (3.3*s)

Agæt muse plata

Take a Bow, Map, Soldier's Poem, Knights I liked.. Glorious was ok for the guitar work towards the end and the rest were so-so.

I feel like this album is better than a lot of the 3s I've rated, but not as good as the 4s, I think that going forward I'll be more reluctant to just give a three out to an album that I didn't think was bad. 3 has reached a new standard.

What an interesting album cover. The music is definitely different from what I would normally listen to. But I enjoyed it.

Glam, emo and metal tendencies abound here. Not outright insufferable and bits sound good, but mostly uninteresting and dull, too slick and polished and seemingly market-tested. One's hesitant to say it takes itself too seriously, since one doesn't even taken seriously enough to muster the accusation. Too many obvious Radiohead, Travis and Coldplay vibes and affectations (and the Queen mimicry on that one tune) to be considered anything like original – this is just another forgettable alt-ish band of the aughties that couldn't choose what it wanted to be. Its commercial success seems an obvious market against it, despite a few questionable accolades. The ex-ing makes perfect sense in that regard.

I only recognized this album because of Supermassive Black Hole which was in Twilight. Knights of Cyndonia is easily the best song on the album. Guitar tones were really cool throughout the album. Saved 2/12 songs. Not an album I'd likely reach for again just cause it isn't really my thing. 3/5

I had listened to this one long time ago when it first came out but had forgotten about it. Notable tracks are: exo politics and knights of Cynthia - it is at the end of the day a straight forward rock album so don’t look for any particular surprises here but still easy and enjoyable to listen to.

Would've loved it if I listened to it when I was a teenager. Still a pretty good record.

Was never a Muse fan, and this hasn't turned me into one - but I really don't mind this one bit. Sci-fi rock with a bit of a techno twist - but the electronics are done quite subtly all told. You get hints of industrial, EDM, even disco, but you're never in doubt that this is, at heart, big stadium rawk. Perhaps lacking a little in soul, but fine. He production is, surprisingly, a tiny bit flat. 'Knights of Cydonia' still whips ass though.

Non sapevo proprio cosa aspettarmi ma devo dire che mi ha piacevolmente colpito!

It didn't suck entirely but like my 7 year old grandson says when I tell joke, "Hehe...I don't get it."

Every once in a while I get reminded that I should probably listen to Muse more than I do. This album served as the most recent such reminder.

i sort of understand the critiques but at the same time im also enjoying it - they kind of are doing a radiohead thing

Kokonaisuutena keikahtaa päivästä riippuen kolmesta neljään tähteen, mutta Starlightille täydet viisi tähteä. Rrrrrrrakastan.

not for me

I have mixed feelings about this one. It's excessive, over the top, and every (black) hole is filled with whatever sound. It doesn"t feel genuine. At the same several songs are truly entertaining, so I end up with a score just in the middle.

I wasn't really paying attention but this still got me boppin in my seat, love the guitars here :) some of the songs felt like a more rock-oriented, more theatrical version of Radiohead (if that's even possible) 3/5

Pretty good. Got a little long on me though for whatever reason

Un peu de ressemblance avec U2, on peut pas renier super massive black hole

I knew the couple hits and liked then, but the overall album was pretty weak and disappointing.

If nothing else this proves that if Rush's lead singer tried to do a Thom York knock off, instead of just screeching, I'd probably like Rush more

Yeah yeah thats a great album , next !!!!

They are daft but this has loads of good tracks.

Solid album. A few excellent songs on here.

Not bad, but nothing for me to connect with.

This is not a bad album and it is nearly very good. I think they are more inventive then Coldplay but also veer off into what feels like overboard fantasy and dramatics that lack emotional depth… so regardless of their wild musicality which I find interesting at the beginning of the album… they are still emotionally on level with Coldplay and not as accomplished and nuanced in their songwriting as Radiohead… who they clearly emulate. I don’t fault them for that it’s a good zone to play in… but imagine Thom Yorke leaves Radiohead and muse’s singer replaces him. They could perform great renditions of previous Radiohead material, but anything new would likely be very lacking if Thom’s replacement helped write the new songs. The last two songs in the album are just terrible too

B Take A Bow 4 Starlight 4 Supermassive Black Hole 4 Map Of The Problematique 3 Soldier's Poem 3 Invincible 3 Assassin 3 Exo-Politics 3 City Of Delusion 4 Hoodoo 5 Knights Of Cydonia 4 Just barely bisses the 4 mark. Ullmark. Game 7.. Uh oh...

No comments. Not an album I needed to hear but better than I expected. Bonus for some real guitars, I guess.

Good album containing some stadium rocking anthems.

Muse has never grabbed me and pulled me in. I enjoy their songs but haven’t moved deeper. This listen didn’t change that.

The singles were pretty good but I didn’t care for this nearly as much as Absolution, or especially Origin of Symmetry. Probably their only good album since then though.

I got high in a house that was under construction once while listening to Muse, but that was probably 2004 or 2005 so more than likely we were listening to Absolution. I had Absolution on CD and I can clearly remember listening to it while my dad took me to a car show in Dayton. Absolution got me through that day. Then this album came out in 2006 and by then I don't think I cared much for Muse anymore. By 2006 we were all downloading single songs (viruses?) from limewire and cds were quickly phasing out as MP3 players became the new fad. Anyway, I will happily experience this album 18 years after its release. So Muse somehow seems to make the same song/album over and over. I don't know how to explain it but I could have sworn some of these songs were on Absolution because they sound like they should be. It's not necessarily a bad thing but it doesn't say a lot for their creativity. They do have a set style and they stick to it and that's what most artists do. And it works mostly. They tried some things on this album and while they sound good, it also sounds like Muse just trying to emulate different styles of music to break away from their own. I actually enjoyed most of these songs so why do i still feel compelled to give this album only 3 stars? I think this is more just me feeling like they made the same album twice in a row.

A mix of good, great and terrible.

Mixed bag, some good stuff, some average. High 3*

music my friend recommends to me

Muse seems like one of those bands that looks good on paper. But when it comes to execution, something feels off. Like, I can hear that they're trying, but there's just something not there, whether it's the basic lyricism or a lack of passion in the music. I can hear what they're saying, but I don't believe them.

A fun bombastic dancy pomp.

Pretty sure this is my first listen of this dude and his music. Can't say this is something I would seek out, but there were a few rockers in there I thought were decent. Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole and Knights of Cydonia stood out the most. Thought it got a little slow in the middle of the album, but it picked up the pace towards the end. Nothing I would download but wasn't a bad couple of listens. Going right down the middle with 2.5. I'll round up to 3. 3

3.5 Another album that I used to own and enjoy in high school, but in my opinion, this one doesn’t hold up quite as strongly as Smash. It’s certainly still an enjoyable album, but listening to it now, I find it a bit overdramatic and derivative of Radiohead - or Elvis in the case of Soldier’s Poem. I do appreciate the sci-fi twist they put on the sound and think it results in some cool moments, but as a whole, I just don’t find it as exciting or as inspired as I once did. That being said, Starlight and Knight of Cydonia are still both incredible songs (never quite got the hype surrounding Supermassive Black Hole). The latter is one that I still listen to regularly today and that has actually become my go-to hype song whenever I need to amp myself up. Job interview? Knights of Cydonia. Intense workout? Knights of Cydonia. Michigan State down at halftime? Knights of Cydonia. (Note: The song has produced better results for me personally than it has for my Spartans). If you haven’t seen it, the music video for the song is just as great and nails the vibe of the song perfectly, both in style and in scope with what’s basically a sci-fi Western short film. Anyway, while I enjoyed revisiting this one, I can see why it didn’t end up leaving much of a lasting impression on me. However, I did get the chance to see these guys live just last year, and I gotta say, regardless of how you might feel about their newer stuff, they still put on a pretty damn good show. It’s as flashy and theatrical as this album is in all the best possible ways, and the guys rock out just as hard (and one of their touring members proposed to his girlfriend at my show!) Never a bad time with Muse, but they’re not quite all-time favorite material for me.

Enjoyed. Some good stuff

Pretty cool album. Definitely bold. Reminds me of a cross between The Strokes and System of a Down. Interesting combo.

Alright as background music, not too interresting or objectionable. I thought I recognized some of the tracks but that was probably because the music is so generic.

3.1 fine, nothing special, all the songs are the same really faves: starlight

Nice to revisit this one. I always enjoyed parts of it.

they sound like radiohead meets queen... i don't dislike.... may need further listen.. just sounds so plastic to me

Enjoyed it!! Might be something I'll come back too in the future.

Soilddd

Black Holes & Revelations Had to listen with an open mind as I’ve never really liked anything of their’s that I’ve heard and I struggle to escape the feeling that their music is very much a 14 year old boy’s idea of what is cool. You know what’s really cool? Going to school and listening to your teachers. Take a Bow - Liked the build up, a bit of Baba O’Riley and quite a lot of Queen. Starlight - This one really grew on me, kind of had a kids Sci-Fi Tv show vibe to it. Supermassive Black Hole - I like the falsetto and it’s a good pop song, but I think this tips just a bit too much into musical theatre
Map of the Problematique - great title, Depeche mode vibes. Pretty fun. Soldier’s Poem had a bit too much Queen for my taste. Invincible, Assassin & Exo-Politics I wasn’t that into, melodically, lyrically or musically. The Sky-yyy backing vocal bugged me for ages until it clicked it was from Sweet Child O’Mine. City of Delusion - I really liked the silly OTT fun of this one, particularly the ‘eastern’ style strings
Hoodoo - quite liked the Spanish guitar intro but it didn’t seem to go anywhere that interesting.
Knights of Cydonia - this is a great, daft pop rock song. Very enjoyable. Great drumming and drum sound. I get the singing is deliberately histrionic and there is obviously more than a touch of Thom Yorke in the vocals, but without the emotional resonance or subtlety. Overall I liked the silliness of it all, a kind of a knowing over the topness, even if it did get a bit too stage musical at points and I did struggle with some of the songs. When it all comes together like on Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole and Knights of Cydonia it’s enjoyable, but if it misses the mark it sometimes verges on being a bit of an overwrought mulch.
A couple of songs I really liked and lots of enjoyable pomposity. I didn’t dislike it at all but I’m not sure I’ll actually listen again or look into more Muse. So, hmm, I’ll go 3 for vibes. ⭐⭐⭐️ Now back to If I Could Only Remember My Name

Demasiado ampuloso para mi gusto.

Pretty good arena rock album. It can feel a bit too polished and safe at times but they nailed the kind of huge sound you'd want to fill up a stadium. While I enjoyed in the moment, it didn't grab me enough to warrant repeat listens.

some songs are overly familiar however expertly played, a little too slick for my liking. I like my music more raw and edgy.

Between a 3&4

This album was better than I expected actually. There were a few U2/Coldplay-esque songs but the rest of it was really good

Black Holes and Revelations is the fourth album by the English rock band Muse. It's an alternative progressive rock album with themes surrounding political and dystopian topics in addition to the unknown and more emotional themes such as regret, ambition, and love. Released to critical acclaim, this album was a best seller and topped music charts around the world. It has been certified gold in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, & Norway, platinum in Australia, Canada, France (triple), Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, the US & the UK (triple). This is a well put together album, with a little bit of different rock music for everyone. It's a great album with a fun personality where the band didn't take themselves too seriously. Standout tracks are the singles "Supermassive Black Hole" & "Knights of Cydonia".

When I was in the fourth form and starting to buy vinyl I bought a couple of albums by The Boomtown Rats (notably not listed so far and I'm up to 600 odd). Then within a couple of years I was listening to The Clash. For millenials aged 14 I guess this was who you listened to before Radiohead. Frightening to think that you wouldn't move on pretty quick. TBF, like the Rats, they can put together a tune - this one starts and end pretty well, but boy does it sag in the middle. 2.5 really but as a gateway drug to OK Computer I'll give it 3.

I always thought Muse were desperate to be Radiohead, and by existing they actually made Radiohead worse. They did have some credibility with their earlier albums but this one marked a very obvious move to try and establish themselves as a stadium rock band. A few bands did the same thing in the mid 2000s, Kings of Leon when they did Sex on Fire, and Biffy Clyro with that ‘I am a Mountain’ song. Muse’s lyrics have always been incredibly cringeworthy, they have the political awareness of a 6th form student who likes rage against the machine. This album isn’t terrible but it’s bland IT service desk rock. I listened to this on YouTube because I don’t want it fucking up my Spotify recommendations and it’s always nice seeing Matt Bellamy as he looks like my old maths teacher - Mrs Cunningham.

This was a pretty fun listen my favorite was “Supermassive Black Hole”

At times it reminds me of Queen without Freddy Mercury or any hit songs.

*starts blasting city of delusion because my life is too hard* - Edward at some point in the twilight movies

This was okay -- nothing I'd play again, but I liked the sound and the vibe.

I definitely prefer Muse earlier than this album, but, it's still a romp.

I’ve never really got Muse, always found them a bit boring (a bit rich coming from you Rozza!). Wouldn’t be surprised if everything they’ve ever made was just shat out by an AI machine. This feels like it’s probably their best work though, a few ones I recognised. Supermassive Blackhole is a FIFA song as well, so that probably saves it from a 2*. The Simpsons: No

It was a fun listen but the band either was inspired by a bunch of other bands that they sound just like were inspired a bunch of other bands to sound just like them since the album came out. I'll keep it in the at home Shuffle but I'm not going to carry it around on my phone.

This album is fine, but the tracks are almost out of order. Why Starlight is not in the middle of the album, I’ll never understand. Muse has better albums

Interesting sound

Highlights: Take A Bow, Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique, Exo-politics, Knights of Cydonia. In a nutshell: singing stadium rock style songs of dystopia and new world order. I remember playing this album on repeat for months, and in retrospect... it sounds like a mishmash of Depeche Mode, Radiohead and Queens of the Stone Age (the latter was not cited as an influence). Knights of Cydonia s never gets old for me. Overall: 6/10

bombast elektrorock

As a Radiohead fan, I see the comparables and have avoided Muse because they’re often held as a knock-off of RH. This album is a solid listen all the way through. While their best moments are very Radiohead-like, they add their own mood to the mix and make for an enjoyable experience.

These three guys make a lot of noise. And they have created a galaxy brain-level vision of a very bleak future. But at least it’s an apocalypse you can dance to. “Supermassive Black Hole” sounds as advertised, and “Starlight” is epically rendered anxiety and heartache. The whole album sounds like party anthems washed in dread. Apparently, if you pay attention, it’s a dystopian song cycle. But the same themes work on a song-by-song basis too. My son was crazy for Muse when he was pretty young; listening again, it’s not any clearer what drew him in. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Muse grooves, invents, reaches for the rafters, and makes music pretty accessible for a kid’s first Rock ‘n’ Roll crush, like a musical gateway drug for future Radiohead fans.

I like the music a lot but the droning singing gets to me. If this were instrumental it would be a 4 for sure. 2.9 average per track.

Not bad but nothing that Radiohead wasn't doing better 10 years earlier

Felt like high school in the 80's digital new wave caught in late nineties garage band grunge.

First sound was different and creative. Didn’t love it didn’t hate it. Second song is a classic hit. U2 vibes. Ended with hard rock style which appealed to me more. 3.5 stars.

I don’t feel like this album has a distinct sound. I’m having a hard time deciding if I like it or not. I think I’d just like to move on.

You can't deny the *sound* of this album. Every note, ring, twang, chime, tingle, and clink sounds massive. Impactful in just the right way. I've already had the top three of the songs of this album saved in my go-to playlists. Maybe that's why you feel full of it after listening to 5+ songs back to back. It's not like they suddenly sound bad, they are even varied enough to not be boring, but by the end I couldn't stand the sound anymore. I would compare it to overstuffing yourself at the fast food joint of your choice. At first, it's great and all, but after eating all of these sugary fat bombs, all you feel is disgust towards what's in front of you and yourself.

I'm not a huge Muse fan, it doesn't stand out to me. It's not bad, it's musically good, I think it's the singer that doesn't do it for me. He makes all the songs sound the same, imo. The riff of Assassin went kinda hard. I'll give it a 3, overall it was okay.

I absolutely love some of muses songs, but most of the time its what I call microwaved music. It's the kind of music you listen in the backround and forget it's on. Not bad, but it lacks personality. 3/5 neutral opinion.

I like muse, this is not my favorite album though

There is a lot going on here.

I listened to this album as background and thought it was pretty good, but a second time through without all the distractions and I wasn't as impressed. Would recommend halfheartedly.

Pretty decent album Top tracks: Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Knights of Cydonia

Kind of like the Killers album on this list, not really for me. I will say that the second half of this album saves it, namely Assassin and City of Delusion. I love the cover though.

FAVO: Starlight, City of Delusion, Knights of Cydonia

- First album I have been given that had a cultural \"impact\" that I noticed in my lifetime. I saw Muse live the year after this came out (at a festival...they were not the only act) and it was very obvious that their American fanbase was growing. They would be much bigger five years later. - Some fantastic tracks (some of which I had never heard), but the album does feel a bit same-y throughout. - No doubt a fun listen. But I also do not necessarily feel like anything is being pushed. The sound is largely quite safe.

Ah Muse are a band I always feel could be so much better for me. I want to like them. They have lots of interesting ideas but none of them totally grab me. It’s like they’ve gone ‘we love Radiohead AND Coldplay’. But they arent poppy enough for Coldplay or interesting/experimental enough for Radiohead. For me they’re a bit like a chocolate digestive. By no means bad, enough going on for me to be slighty interested in, but they’re never a go to for me. If there’s a Hobnob in the mix, I’m there all day long. It just isn’t for me.

Odd choice for a muse album in this list, hope origins of symmetry is also on here. Though this may be the one which was well received internationally. There's a lot to like here but it's also showing signs of all the annoying Muse attributes that make all subsequent albums unlistenable. Vague 'fight the power' themes, really leaning into the over the top rock opera side of things with lots of space sounds. I really like earlier muse and Id be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the nostalgia of this album, but it deserves a lot of criticism.

Probably haven't heard this album before, but I definitely had origin of symmetry, which had some great tracks on.... Also remember the video for muscle museum quite distinctly....Think I'd lost interest by this point though. Yeah, it's definitely muse, very distinctive sound and voice. I not sure why, but they just don't quite do it for me. Too clinical somehow? Does that make sense? But equally some great guitar and bass lines. I knew the hits here, but they were played a lot and they aren't doing mutch for me either really... Don't have too much against them, but won't be back to this. Think knights of Cydonia is the best track 3.5

I liked it. Something different

Not terrible but too all over the place for one's taste, with alternately too much emo and too much metal ("Assassin"). And just too much generally. Not something one will be listening to again, deathbed notwithstanding. The exing of this record makes perfect sense as it's pretty forgettable, even by '90s standards.

Some nice tunes

Definitely recognize a couple, but like Meat is Murder, not my style. Like some of the rifts though

Prog-Rock in the History of Yes
