Rio - 5/5 My Own Way - 4/5 Lonely in Your Nightmare - 4/5 Hungry Like the Wolf - 5/5 Hold Back the Rain - 4/5 New Religion - 4/5 Last Chance on the Stairway - 4/5 Save a Prayer - 5/5 The Chauffeur - 4/5 Average score: 4.3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Bangers!! Not quite a 5 for me but this was a great album. I usually steer away from this sort of music but Duran Duran know how to produce the catchy stuff A very high 4 ⭐️
Another example of really great 80s new wave! Love this kind of sound - it does poppy stuff (Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf) and weirder stuff (The Chauffeur) both real well.
Such a solid classic with surprising depth. Having Rio, Save a Prayer and Hungry Like the Wolf on one album is stacked enough but they still find the space to do slightly weirder, darker stuff like The Chauffeur. This album has really grown on me over the years.
Love some Duran Duran.
80s awesomeness
Better than Coldplay
Man, I loved these guys in HS. They're music has aged well.
Pure 80s synth pop. Iconic
This is one of the best new wave albums I've had so far. The vocals are rather standard, but what really sets this apart is the songwriting, which is miles above most new wave albums on the list.
Hell yes
Fantastic sounding record. The hits off this are obvious, but the rest is solid too.
8/10
Solid pop. Singles are strong, album tracks don't bring it down
Remember Rio, and get down.
Really enjoyed this album! Hungry Like a Wolf is a great early 80s song and I've always enjoyed Rio as well. I was surprised because I was between three non-singles for the tracks to add to the playlist: Lonely in Your Nightmare, Last Chance on the Stairway, and The Chauffeur. Went with the first two of those three, which seem to get a lot less attention that the latter and the hits of the album. Wild because I think Lonely in Your Nightmare and Last Chance on the Stairway are excellent songs. Probably closest I've felt to this being a 4.5 for any album through the first 50 days or so of this project.
Really good pop album. Obviously Rio, HLTW, The Chauffeur are all standouts.
Pretty good.
A euphoric hit of 80s energy. Not quite Talking Heads-level fun, but I still really appreciate the grooves and belting choruses. Rio, My Own Way, and Hungry Like the Wolf are all bangers!
great 80s songs!
A classic.
Classic Duran Duran
Great stuff.
I get it
Synthie-Rock aus den 80ern. Interessante Mischung, gut gemacht. 4/5
And here's a band that I had totally written off since we've all heard Hungry Like the Wolf a million times. It's almost as if their perception was plagued by their own success. This album is genuinely good, even to the point that I may listen to other Duran Duran albums. The album is just good, throughout. It's cohesive, it's consistent, it's not a drag. Good job.
This was awesome actually. Of course I had heard a few songs. But I was really impressed with the recording and also the bass lines were amazing.
Cool
i liked all the songs!! i thought they were all good and thus the album as a whole is good!! hungry like the wolf and rio go off hard hell yeah
Pretty good, couple good hits in there. You can’t go wrong
Some of the best pop of the 80s. All great tracks with some unique experimentation that keeps things fresh. The bass lines on the album are terrific and funky. 4/5
80's through and through. I was not interested in the Collector's Edition that Spotify was streaming, with way too many remixes and versions of the same songs. Rio is an amazing album, synth and 80's new wave all the way through. The hits are there, and the tracks that flew under the radar are pretty good. Thanks for the nostalgia. My Rating: 4/5
Really enjoyed and had a nice surprise when I recognized a tune as well. Good throwback vibes.
Not one weak song. The chauffeur is incredible
Wow. There’s not a single bad song in here.
Me agrado lo que escuché y reconocí varios
Nice album, modern classic, 4/5
Absolute classic. A fun listen!
Great album. 4.5
Well, this came out of nowhere. It looks like I can like 80s pop, if it's done right (done like this, that is). The hooks are spot on, basically zero songs overstay their welcome, and it manages to definitively stay within its niche without getting repetitive. I think the end of the album leaves something to be desired, but when the rest of it is this fun, I've gotta give credit where credit is due. Thanks, Duran (Duran).
Fín plata, Save a Prayer vel fallegt lag með hræðilega sögu. Samt betri útgáfa með The Eagles of Death Metal
I had not listened to the full album before. It is pretty solid throughout. Solid guitar, drums, and vocals.
Duran Duran is a solid band. I don’t have anything else to say
Þau lög sem maður þekkir rosa góð, hin frekar bla, fær 4 stjörnur en er meira 3,5/3,7
I really enjoyed this one! Fun, bass was great, and I'm between 4 and 5! I'll go 4 as it wasn't one I'd rush to get, but I am glad to have heard it
not bad at all
A couple not great songs brings this down a little. Otherwise I love it.
Great bass lines. I'd listened to the big songs but not the whole album. It's a classic and has some bangers and productive fillers.
4.1
When you think 1980s music, Duran Duran would surely be close to the front of most people's thoughts, and on 'Rio', the group's second record, just about every 80s cliché is there: guitars drenched with chorus and delay, walls of synth and fat bass lines. What Duran Duran did wasn't unique to them; Brian Eno and Roxy Music, German Krautrock groups, Pink Floyd, Bowie and Genesis had already dabbled with the New Wave genre; but there's something to be said about 'Rio' and how it captured lightning in a bottle for the group. This album's so darn infectious. There's a reason 'Hungry Like the Wolf' is one of the most iconic songs of the 80s. Simon Le Bon sounds like an urgent beast ready to infect listeners with his confident, charismatic croon, and he's well supported by Taylors Andy, Roger and John, as well as Nick Rhodes and his mastery of the keys/synths. Other great songs on this album include 'Hold Back the Rain', 'Save a Prayer' and the title track, and the sheer consistency of 'Rio' makes it hard to believe it was panned by critics upon release in 1982. 'Rio' spearhead Duran Duran into a brand new renaissance for British pop, alongside The Human League, A Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club and Phil Collins, and was the blueprint so many pop/synth bands (Eurythmics, Tears For Fears, Wham!, Pet Shop Boys, Dead or Alive) would follow later in the 1980s. You know your album's done its job when it encourages the likes of David Bowie to keep up with 'Let's Dance'.
Quite enjoyed Zombie, but not the other songs so much.
Heard it before. Good album.
Not sure if I ever listened to this album all the way through before, but I feel like I’ve heard every song here 1000 times. I guess Duran Duran has dug itself deep into the collective unconscious. Album cover looks like something I would’ve seen in a salon in 1992. The bassist on this record is really good.
Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf were good, the others were a bit meh. I’m feeling generous, so a 4.
Good vibe this. And a couple of bangers. Simpsons: Yes
Some good tunes on here, but I don't think it's quite top tier. If it had had their Bond tune on, I would have probably given it full marks.
Pretty good! Some classic tracks. Would be a 5 if there was a little more variety.
7/10
Zurück in die Kindheit. Yeah!
Liked it more than I thought I would! Hungry Like the Wolf is an 80s classic in my mind. Enjoyed tracks like New Religion and Hold Back the Rain.
Damm that funky ouh yea. 85/100
Very 80s. Very dancey.
Like this one! Solid sound. Good lyrics.
great.
new wave Rio Hungry like the wolf Save a prayer
Those basslines though. Best part of the album. Singing is fine, drums are groovy. Lyrics are fun or whatever. Might have to listen to their other stuff after this. No song stands out, but all of them uplift the album. "The Chauffeur" was not a good way to end the album, though. Still, good music to vibe to
I actually really enjoyed this album! Well done new wave/synth pop! Obviously everyone knows hungry like the wolf, but there's a lot more substance here. I definitely see myself going back to this album!
Alright, grab on to your coconuts with tiny umbrellas in them, cause today, we’re going on a musical vacation! This album is really good! I’d heard the album once before after seeing something on TV about it, and I really liked it then, and it still holds up. The songs all have that distinct 80s feel, without feeling too cheesy. Nick Rhodes synth playing is a big part of that, being able to switch to fit the tone of the song, from the upbeat title track, to the darker Lonely In Your Nightmare, one of my standout tracks. The three Taylors(surprisingly no relation to one another) Make up most of the band, with Andy creating some really cool guitar textures, and Roger and John backing him up on drums and bass. Simon Le Bon’s vocals are unforgettable on songs like Hungry Like The Wolf and Save A Prayer, making him one of the top new wave vocalists. Overall, I highly recommend this album if you’re wanting to get into new wave, or just need something catchy to listen to.
Better than I expected?
Jam fest, groovy and funky as all hell
C’est une période musicale qui me touche de plus en plus j’ai remarqué ça il y a quelques mois / annees. Le style new wave me touche aussi, donc c’était forcément gagné d’avance. Album dynamique !
AND I'M HUNGRY LIKE THE WOOOOLLLLLLFF
Very fun
Oh god, it’s these guys. Rio used to get stuck in my head all the time when I was a kid. Also every time we played the Rock Band video game we’d end up doing Hungry Like the Wolf. God I hated Rock Band. I was so bad at it and it made me so mad because I was supposed to be a Music Kid (choir, piano, etc.). I don’t even know why we always picked that song. I think we just thought “juices like wine” was funny. Anyway those were the only two songs I knew from this album until today. Okay, confession time, I started typing this while Rio was playing fully prepared to get snarky starting in this sentence - something along the lines of “I don’t know if I was missing out on all that much” - but Hold Back The Rain is playing right now and I’m unironically having some fun here. Like, hang on, I have to actually give a fair listen to the rest of this album before I can say anything else. Okay, we’re back. Yeah I mean to be honest most of these songs are bona fide bangers. Those synth soundscapes/xylophone solos are really doing it for me here. The Chauffeur has got a great melody. The 80s have never been a decade I’ve ever felt any kind of media-manufactured nostalgia for, at all (not even at the height of the mania for Stranger Things, a show I have watched and enjoyed) but listening to this… I kind of get it. It’s never going to be my thing exactly, but it’s kind of awesome for what it is nonetheless. That’ll teach me not to knock these things until I’ve tried them
Iconic album cover! This album should be right up my alley as I’m a fan of new wave and 80s in general. And it was good but maybe slightly too pop-focused for my taste. Before starting I only really knew “Hungry like a Wolf” which is a good track but not one I often find my self wanting to listen to. The start felt slightly weak. Rio was an ok track but the following left me slightly bored. It wasn’t until “Hungry like a Wolf” that I was grooving along. My other favourite tracks was “Save a Prayer” and the darker spacious arrangement of “The Chaffuer” which was really cool. I was going to give this album a 3 but when listening to the songs again I actually really enjoy it. I feel the songs I dismissed at first actually have something and there were enough stand-out tracks the first time to warrant a 4.
The bass drives this album with a tight, funky groove that gives every track serious energy. Layered with Duran Duran’s signature 80s sound, it hits that sweet spot between nostalgic and fresh. It’s polished, fun, and keeps you hooked from start to finish. Definitely worth a replay. Solid 8.5/10.
Great album, great songs! The beginning of a good run of music from Duran Duran!
Songs are all along the same vibe as rio, very fun, would be great to dance to
A band so nice, you say the name twice. Duran Duran rules
Rio should've been the bigger hit off of this album, bring back surprise sexual jazz solos in the middle of pop songs!! Great listen from start to finish -- New Religion, Hold Back the Rain, and Save a Prayer were surprising winners that I hadn't heard before. It feels like uncovering a stylistic time capsule from the 80's. Even Hungry Like The Wolf has this awesome balance of ripping guitar riffs layered over an addicting repetitive video game soundtrack style of synth. It's like you're playing Pacman in an arcade while the speakers blast Def Leppard.
Good synthesis of New Wave synth music and "rock and roll" writing, with plenty of well-deserved hits
Solid album with a couple of absolute bangers. And the videos are excellent too.
I enjoyed some songs a lot!
Old tunes. Pretty nice.
Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf are bangers
great album!!!
I had no idea how many of these were on this one album. Tons of fun.
Entering this album I couldn't have named a single Duran Duran song. Turned out I had heard Rio before (obviously). My only knowledge of them came from a name drop in one of my favorite Bowling For Soup songs. So I was primed to like them I think with that glowing recommendation and it was actually better than I thought. Very enjoyable listen. Definitely felt a little dated but a good time.
Wow, "Rio" is one of those songs that exists somewhere in my brain but I've never know who sings it. This is a great song. Duran Duran may break through my general dislike of the 80s albums we've had. That was a sweet sax solo. "Hungry Like the Wolf" is another song from that formative Top Gear cassette I've referenced before. It rocks. The rest of the album kind of blended together. Duran Duran has a great sound and some of the songs were bangers. Others got a little old quicker, but it was a fun album! 7/10
Good quality 80s Pop. Not every song is a banger but I didn’t think there were any duds. The one thing I thought it lacked was on a couple of songs the intro would start with an interesting tonal shift, but then once it got going it just defaulted back to the same kind of sound as the previous track. I’m sort of toying on the rating but enjoyed it enough to give it the 4.
The bass, the synth, the 80s oozing out of every beat. I don't know how hungry wolves are, but this album left me completely satisfied!
Bien.
Can’t get much more 80s than this! All strong songs though and I never appreciated at the time how good John Taylor’s bass playing was.
Неплохо :)
Oh hell yeah. This cover is amazing- vibrant and inviting and very much of a time. Those earrings! One of the best, most recognizable pieces of cover art. Stand outs ----> "Rio" is on the '80s Mt. Rushmore; the groove on "New Religion" is exceptional; "Wolf" is so corny it's amazing; "Prayer" is wonderfully exotic..... Simon Le Bon's lyrics are dog shit but who cares. Cherry ice cream smile? Lol the words sound nice together, I don't know what else y'all want. MTV was wall-to-wall Duran Duran for a few years back in the early/mid 80s, so I can understand people who were sick of them due to their omnipresence. But that was 40 years ago, and these are some intriguing tunes, thrusting you into a totally alien world (to most of us, I believe!) of jet-setting around the late-20th century, banging super models, playing synth guitar in a Cambodian temple. I'm not sure what more you could want in an 80s synth-pop album. FOUR STARS
I enjoyed this. Obviously the title track is great, but the whole album is actually pretty fun to listen to.
One of the best pop records of the 80's. Filled with funky pop tunes with new wavish twist. What's not to like!
Loved it! Haven't listened to this album before but I really enjoyed it.
The blending of new wave with an unmatched style allowed for a legacy album to remain relevant today.
Very punchy and party-like
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. I have not found a lot of love for brittish pop bands and while I certainly remember Duran Duran from the 80's I expected to just enjoy the nostalgia of the radio tracks but enjoyed the album as a whole.
Super fun! Felt like bubbles on my brain. Absolutely hits the spot when you're in the mood.
♫ Listening to "Rio" by Duran Duran (Rio (Remastered), 1982) ♫ and ♫ Listening to "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran (Rio (Remastered), 1982) ♫
Excellent, era defining pop. So many huge hits, but many of the non-hits are the best tracks!
I quite enjoyed this, with some reservations. The first four tracks were obviously hits. After that my attention wandered, but I really enjoyed “New Religion” and “Save a Prayer.” Overall, the melodies, synth textures, and full, long arrangements were awesome. Singer has like, the quintessential New Wave 80’s voice, but man are the lyrics pretty full of clunkers. Best ignored to be honest. Either way, I can still tell why this album was massive. Good pop. Must-listen #180.
A good time for all
Pretty good album overall. While it's a bit too early for my time, I say screw it! Let's bring on all the 80's Nostalgia. "Hungry like the Wolf"? Not hungry enough. I want more!
Good songs. Nothing objectionable.
I mean "The Chauffer" is a five star song. The album? Almost perfection. I just cannot in good conscience give it a 5/5. It though is a legendary 4/5. The most perfect 4/5 ever.
I really enjoyed this album. The title track in particular is really fun, and Hungry Like the Wolf is a classic
Duran Duran taking their music from the earlier new-wave clubbing indie approach to fame, with a really strong album.
I'd only heard the hits when this came out. I like the funky layering of bass, synths and guitars. More to it than I originally gave it credit for.
Fun listen, saved for future relistens!
Upbeat and very 80s.
goof
Classic 80's pop at it's best.
This album? Definitely a 4-star classic. These guys were absolute 80s icons, no doubt. Flashy videos, catchy tune, they owned that era. And the cool thing is, they're still out there doing their thing today, which you gotta respect. Rio just screams the 80s, but in a good way. It's got that slick, stylish vibe, but underneath it all, there's a rebellious energy that resonated with us back then. It wasn't just bubblegum pop; it had an edge. It's the kind of album that makes you remember when music videos were actually events. Still holds up, even if some folks tried to dismiss them as just pretty faces. We knew better.
A personal icon of the 80s. This is what the 80s truly sounded like.
Kitch but very listenable.
Not really my thing but I was 16 when this record came out and remember how huge it was. It holds up well.
8/10…new wave / synthy pop
Came in with low expectations way better than I thought it would be. Hungry like a wolf may be the worst song on the record.
Rio's a top 10 single of the 80s and the rest tries to match it (and only gets close)
I think I’m comparing any new-waver-y record in the DEVOxCARS grid. one axis is how weird yet revealing about contemporary culture it is, and the other axis is how much it’s the best pop songwriting you ever heard. This record is pretty exceptionally done but man do I wish I cared about more than 2-3 songs.
Great Duran Duran album, only good songs and some of my favorites like "Hungry like the wolf" and "Rio".
It's a good listen. Honestly half the songs are just okay in my opinion, not bad at all, just okay. But the other half, songs like Rio and Hungry Like A Wolf for example, are so fucking good, you kinda forget the okay half of the album
one of those albums where it feels like i should have known it already. obviously i recognized rio and hungry like the wolf, with the doo-doo-doo’s of the latter maybe too familiar, but greatly enjoyed the rest. it’s becoming clear to me that i’m an avid 80s fan. big fan of ‘lonely in your nightmare’ in particular.
Like this a lot, several all timers, Save a prayer my favourite
God this was one sweet nostalgic trip down memory lane - I remember hearing the main singles A LOT as a young kid and this album takes me right back to the early 80s. My recollection at the time was that DD were considered a bit of a joke 80s band but they’re a way better band than I realised. Not ‘the best’ but I surprisingly loved the album
Uptempo funky pop with 80s production values, catchy songs, good vocals. All in all, this was actually highly listenable and a pleasure to hear.
The sun was shining when I listened to this, glorious day! This album has its fair share of filler, but I enjoyed all the hits. Extra star for the bass, I can't get over how funky the basslines are, incredible!
Great album. Love Duran Duran. Enjoyable and would absolutely listen again and again.
Pitch perfect 80s new wave fair
Best New Wave/ Synth Pop album i've listened to yet. Catchy but not really cheesy. Sticks to a certain sound, yet colors outside the lines a bit. 4/5
This was way better than I expected
4.2
Boat suits.
Very 80s. Very British. Liked on first listen, was annoyed somewhat listening this time, but may have something to do with missing the opening hours of Gilbert Jaune Musique in Paris (or rather making it but being thrown out in shame after 10mins). Anyway, shows the effect of mood on one's perception of music. Save A Prayer and The Chauffeur reminded me of the utter brilliance of the album though, if the others had failed... 4*, take my fucking money and all that...
For some reason thought they were glam rock. Actually just very 80s and I know loads of songs.
Why is this actually good wtf
seeeeehr 80er sehr rio ja voll. aso nai coole refrain coole bass uf rio, sehr catchy. ha die letste 3 lieder bitz a mir verbizieh loh. aber hungry like the wolf jetz slappt extrem. kenni glaub? huere geil. homd back the rain au meh happy dappy findi no geil. nöd glich viel power wie hungry like the wolf aber happ stohtne. new religion cooli riffs uf der gitarre und de bass bechunt viel platz findi au cool. hihat macht alles chli ruhelos aber s passt. cools album, mengmol chli ziellos aber die paar songs ide mitti sind seeehr geil und de bass isch durs band super!
Was expecting to be binning this, it’s those postures from when I was a kid, yeah the singles are, don’t tell anyone, kinda catchy but he’s a weak ass singer and lots are 80s keyboards. Guess I have changed as this was more engaging now than some of the shit I was actually listening too back then appears to. Maybe as I have no relationship with this it lacks personal cringe factor? But hell it’s music. And yes that is 80s in a cover. 4 Star
Awesome album. Forgot how much I loved Duran Duran
A 3.5 taken to a 4 by the sheer awesomeness of Hungry Like the Wolf
Even if the rest of the album sucks (which it doesn’t) Hungry Like The Wolf would carry this. Pretty great. Several songs I’d play again.
Oikein makee levy. Pitäisi laittaa listalle tämä! Hyvin tuotettu ja soitettu
fun album pop rock mix
hard to not give this one a 4 just for Rio
first time listening to a duran duran album! i’ve only heard a few hits in the past. on this album in particular i only know “hungry like the wolf”. bangers on this album; rio hungry like the wolf new religion last chance on the stairway save a prayer the chauffeur is a very cool sounding song with a different vibe to it than the rest of the songs. love that! this is quite a mixed album with a few meh songs and quite a few bangers on it. i shall slap a 4 on it.
This is the album that features Duran Duran's 2 huge hits (Rio, and Hungry Like the Wolf). Cheesy 80's synth pop, but surprisingly not a bad album. They were always a band I just filed under 80's cheese and didn't really explore their back catalog, but there are some solid songs on here. The bass work in New Religion slaps! Surprisingly, their hits aren't their best work. I think it may be because their hits were played to death on radios and they just kinda became bland and boring as a result. Favorite songs: New Religion, Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, Hold Back the Rain, Last Chance on the Stairway, My Own Way, Lonely In Your Nightmare Least favorite songs: Save a Prayer 4/5
Quite enjoyed this
Nostalgic and very memorable. I own a best of album and while i was not heavy into Duran Duran, I absolutely listened to all the hits back in the day. This is a solid album with a number of great tracks. 4 stars
This is my father’s favourite band and I get why. Super high level production with a mixture of jams and experimental synth work. Plus I love the bass, I use basses with almost the exact same sound.
Duran Duran has always been a special band for me because it is my dad’s favourite band and really shaped the taste of the music that I have. Really intricate and cool usage of that real 80s sounds. Also, some really big hits with Rio and Hungry like a wolf which really boosted this brilliant album up.
Rio is like stepping into a time capsule of neon, champagne, and windblown silk on a yacht. Unmistakable flair—glamorous, decadent, and bold. The ‘80s, captured in full technicolor glory.
I have had this record on vinyl since I was a kid. Almost every song on this record is a certified banger. It's one of the most 80s things to ever 80s, especially with that Patrick Nagel cover art. I remember vividly their View To A Kill theme song and when I saw Grace Jones seduce James Bond I experienced an overwhelming pre-adolescent sexual awakening. Then, when we were teenagers, my friend told me she lost her virginity to The Chauffeur. So, basically Duran Duran has been soundtracking boners since forever and I am here for it.
Leuk album. Goede muziek! Het album heeft zelfs een paar hits.
It's music of an era In parts uplifting, with slower emotive lyrical tracks thrown in. You want an album to take a journey & this delivers Top track: The Chauffer
Didn’t realise they had more than two hit songs
There’s a lot to love about this album. It’s starts off with the title track right out of the gate which is something you don’t usually see. Duran Duran knew that this album was a bold statement. What I really loved are songs like The Chauffeur which has way more intricacy and complexity than you’d expect from an 80s new wave band
Oh my what a nostalgia hit. Loved Duran Duran as a teenager and this album still holds up for me. Some absolute classics
Great album with quite a few bangers which i can appreciate
Love, adore the big hits. Not sure the less well-known songs hold up for me, though.
Starts with a bang. Fun all the way through. Good times
Classic MTV 90s pop
This was fun! I went in nervous because this is not my typical album but there were a lot of hits I recognized and the album was consistent while still entertaining
Yes great stuff! Truly hard hitters like Hungry like the Wolf and New Religion are found on this one, and of course the low key rave monstertrack “The Chauffeur”. Love all their early work. Whatever they did in the 90s onward is very very mediocre.
Good album. New wave at its finest.
bi duran duran dänk ich wiedermal direkt an alte iPod classic vo mim papi wo ich ha döffe erbe – duran duran isch da au guet verträte gsi trotzdem han ich hüt es paar neui bangers döffe kännelerne hetti scho fast 5 sternli verdient, aber übertriebe wämmer scho nöd grad
Do-do-do-do…An album for its time. Hits were perfect.
I LOVE NEW WAVE OH MY GOD I LOVE NEW WAVE ITS SO COOL OMGHUIUFDOHDOIHOHF loved save a prayer and rio 9/10
I was excited to listen to this one all the way through. It's not my personal favorite, but there are some real bangers on here. It's a 3.5 but I can't say it's middle of the road so a 4 it is
Such a fun album!
great album, will definitely revisit this one
This actually holds up against its contemporaries. Some of the other bands get lost in their state-of-the-art Casio but these guys kept on the guitar jams.
Glossy
Really enjoyed this sound, save a prayer had me lifted
7/10.
Ahhhh....the MTV days. Those first 30 seconds take me straight back there. Oversized suits, with sleeves rolled up, John Taylor's hair blowing backwards whilst perched at the front of a yacht and a super model or two in bikinis...oh, and there's some pretty decent songs in there as well. Enjoyed that (again)
This album bangs, short and sweet and catchy!
Very synth heavy and in your face 80s.
Wull, Durant Durant, dude.
very catchy, cool basslines. Lovely artwork, too. missed it at the time, glad to encounter it now.
Solid 80's stuff. Maybe too pop-ish.
Fantastic
Music to liberate Afghanistan, vibe and cry to
7.5/10 Really nice pop rock album, obviously I knew the hits but the rest was good too. More synth = I liked it more. Pure 80s vibes Best: Hungry Like the Wolf
4.1 Hands down one of the best New Wave albums I've heard. Recognised the first track but not the biggest fan so thought I was in for a tough time. But wow, the streak from track 2 onwards is phenomenal. I didn't think much of their debut but this blows it out the water. Melodic, interesting vocals, captivating. Can't believe I might now be a Duran Duran fan.
🤩
Probably the best of this sort of thing, right,
before my time by a bit but not much, good stuff.
I've heard the title track so many times but I don't think I'd ever listened to it with headphones before, because I'd never noticed how great the bass playing is. The lesson is that I should have been paying more attention to Duran Duran - there are some serious bangers on here.
Classic album
Not sure I had ever listened to this one beyond the singles. Great sound all the way through. Excellent album art too.
I like Duran Duran, its pop music in the best of ways. I grew up with some of these song and hearing some of them again after many years were a thrill.
oh boy i love a short album - especially when its new wave lmao. starting off strong with rio was a big win on duran^2's part. it was also the first song i ever played on radio and i got so scared cuz the intro to the song is quiet as shit so i thought it wasnt playing but then it turned out that it was. anyways the rest of the album was #fire. hungry like the wolf is obviously a banger but id have to say that the chaffeur was my favourite outside of the aforementioned two. those flute thingos in the background are so cool. i give it a 4/5 because i dont think theres anything new wave that qualifies as 5/5 except for the early new order stuff. that being said, this stuff was still groundbreaking for early 80s and so that gives it the 4. if i could give it a .5 i probably would.
um the first thing i thought when i listened to save a prayer was omg its the og sample from the gacha life song absolutely love this album!!!! duran durans sound is so distinct and its especially noticeable within rio especially. so many bangers in here! hungry like the wolf is one of if not my favourite song from the entire 80s. i know nothing about the bass world but i hope that the duran duran bassist is dutifully accredited bc he is the goat. i never noticed how much of a gothic influence they can have, lonely in your nightmares gave me the cure vibes. overall a 4, just because a lot of songs were quite similar to each other and got a bit repetitive. dancing in my room regardless!🥉rio🥈lonely in your nightmares🥇hungry like the wolf
Classic new wave Rio hungry like the wolf My own way
Solid synth and bass. Top shelf production.
Classic album, especially for fans of 80s synths and excess (like me!) standouts - Hold Back the Rain and Save a Prayer for me, deeper cuts than the usual Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf.
God what a fun album. Full of excitement, soaring synths, and just plain cool songs. The spirit of the 80’s is on full display here and the highs are just so damn high. Duran Duran caught a bit of flack from their contemporaries for being a pop consumerist band (looking at you Robert Smith). But I don’t think that’s entirely fair. The song writing isn’t particularly deep, but I think that misses the point of a band like Duran Duran. Music should be fun, and make you want to sing and dance along. This isn’t fine art, but it’s damn good music. Surprise favourite for me is Save a Prayer. Something slightly haunting about the chorus in this one that resonates I love me some melancholy pop music. With decent pacing throughout Rio I feel good about low 4 stars for the album. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Truly timeless. Good times.
Man, I was nine years old sitting outside my sister’s room on cleaning day again listening to this album again. I always wonder how it took her two hours to clean a 8x10 room with her door closed, but I realize it was probably this album. Simon LeBon and John Taylor were household names growing up, and reasonably so. Double-D had a style that was New Wave but had an rock edge. I think part of it was John Taylor’s aggressive walking bass line and Roger Taylor’s not-drum machine that made the difference. There are so many good songs here: Rio (a fav), Hungry (a fav), and Save A Prayer. This time, I really appreciated New Religion, with Nick Rhodes (not a Taylor) odd synth opener and driving guitar (Andy Taylor) and bass (…again, a Taylor), I don’t know if I can say this album defines the time because their music was unlike anyone else in the genre. I can say this defines MY time, and I’m thankful for it!
now i understand how they made a name for themselves. was really fun listening to it.
I was surprised to learn that Duran Duran’s fun-loving, vibe defining, feather-headed hedonism – an attitude since tousled by time’s limitless libido into a sort of archetype of a version of masculinity – wasn’t well received by critics in the early 80s. And then I thought about the sort of person offering a published opinion on new music in the early 80s … and it clicked into place. (Strikes me the Duran Duran boys might have been doubly confused by their critical panning – it’s unlikely they’ve ever had cause to experience envy themselves.) Not to worry, the casting vote on this occasion was the public’s – and thank the saucy gods it was so. To have risked losing this album to history’s unkindness would have been a crime, really. “Rio”, “Hungry like the wolf”, “Save a prayer”; not so much “songs” as cultural quilting points, moments where music, art and general horniness meet to, erm, snog? Anyway… Duran Duran looked the part, acted the part, and sounded the part. The songs here feel remarkably fresh – surely a function of the largely live feel of the recording – and there’s plenty of strong playing and solid compositional chops. At the edges of Simon Le Bon’s debonair delivery there’s even a suitably post-punk angularity, too. Never do we go full synthy-slick. Duran Duran is always definitely a band. (With the exception of “Chauffeur”, a charming song that, pleasingly, reminded me of where Arctic Monkeys went with The Car.) Given how poorly they were reviewed in 1982, it’s almost poetic that Duran Duran’s impact on pop and 20th century music is still under-celebrated, especially compared with some of their contemporaries (and even those they blazed a trail for…). While the historical revisionism applied to this album may be unanimously flattering in tone, it might still be Duran Duran’s fate to forever be jealously held off to one side a bit. And what a legacy that would be.
only knew Hungry Like The Wolf going in. pleasantly surprised, bass guitar in particular sounded great throughout.
7.5
So I obviously love all "the hits" but I was super stoked about how busy the bass player was. Those baselines really stood out. Especially on New Religion.
THE BASSSS HOLY FUCK
An excellent introduction to the new wave phenomenon that is Duran Duran
Couple of classics in here, def would give another listen if I was cleaning the house or something
Bunch of hits I've heard a thousand times plus a few tracks I've never heard that were equally as good.
Rio is glossy, vibrant, and packed with big hooks—but it’s also very much a product of its time, and not always in the best way. There’s no denying the charm of tracks like Hungry Like the Wolf and the title track Rio—they’re punchy, catchy, and made for MTV. The band knew how to craft pop with a slick, fashionable edge, and the production is polished to a mirror shine. But dig beyond the hits and the album starts to feel a bit thin. The over-reliance on style sometimes leaves substance behind, and a few of the deeper cuts feel like filler dressed in shoulder pads and eyeliner. It’s fun, sure, and there's a playful energy throughout—but it doesn’t quite hold up as a front-to-back classic. Enjoyable in small bursts, but not essential.
This is their best album in my opinion. It has catchy riffs and hooks throughout, with some deep cut surprises (Hold Back the Rain, New Religion, The Chauffeur). And, of course, the singles are solid. And GAWD. The bass. John Taylor does not get enough credit for his bass playing. It’s really good, but not great. Solid 4⭐️ for me.
At the beginning I was pretty blown away and ready to consider 5 stars, but the middle started to sound pretty samey so it gets a very solid 4 stars from me. I did enjoy the last couple tracks a lot as well. So clean, so fresh, a great culmination of what came before while pushing into the future and becoming a phenomenon.
3.5
Not bad
My wife bought this album for our record player sort of on a whim and it did not disappoint. It's interesting to hear this after Bon Jovi, a band that does not use synthesizer well, and get the max effect from intricate synth/keyboard. Some really good late tracks here--Last Chance on the Stairway is pretty cool. On this listen I was also surprised how good and crafted the lyrics are. When I was younger 7 and the Ragged Tiger was my jam, but this is solid. Almost a 4.5 for me.
3,5 sterne eher. als ganzes album irgendwie suess, aber keine einzelnen banger
Banger basslines
Disco / New Wave Pop with very talented John Taylor on bass Rio Lonely in Your Nightmare Hungry Like The Wolf Save A Prayer The Chauffeur
Surprisingly good. Great guitar work
I'm a sucker for Duran Duran. The non hits are a bit blah but man you know when a single hits. They really hit.
First impression is the striking album cover, what a masterpiece of a cover, I'd pick this off the shelf instantly even if I didn't know Duran Duran. Honestly they're one of those bands who have been so ubiquitously quoted over my life that I never actually bothered to go in and give them a listen. Damn, this is 80s synth-pop at its absolute peak - literally every song has a killer bassline, and the synth manages to be uniquely interesting in each song. I'm a suck for their backing vocals in Hold Back the Rain and sax riffs in Rio and others. I love Eagles of Death Metal but their cover of Save a Prayer isn't as good as the original. that being said rating it 4 stars because this doesn't feel like "I'm about to die and I'm so glad I heard this"
This album is very very good. Although top-heavy. I can't believe I enjoyed Rio so much that I in fact preferred it over Hungry Like the Wolf (a 97.3fm staple growing up). I fucking love this kind of 80's new wave. Really surprising that Rio didn't end up being as big as Hungry Like the Wolf, since I'd argue it's even more of an earworm. Part 2 (in the single of Rio) is also real good, though not relevant to this album. I think what holds me off from a 5 is the repetitiveness of the songs. Once you get just before the halfway mark through this thing you've really listened to everything it has to throw at you. The singing in one tone the entire album and it all sounded relatively the same didn't gel with me. Absolutely sick album art though, love it. Great listen and great vibes all through.
A seminal entry in the genre of music your uncle gets drunk to. Truly baffled that Duran Duran is still together/alive in the year of our lord 2025, let alone still releasing new music - which unsurprisingly sounds borderline identical to what they put out in the 80s. They know what they’re doing and they do it well. Album cover is sorta unnerving.
Shoulder pads, white Testarossas, Knight Riders, Lasers, Aerobic! Liked this much better now than then. 4 stars!
Very fun! Alive, colorful, and different. I was a big fan of this one. 8/10
Really fun and energetic pop rock from the 80s. Kinda fuses themes from new wave and the darkness of early gothic but still captures disco back beats and really foward and great sounding vocals with some sweet harmonies. Honestly gotta add a nod here, tasteful use of the gated snare. The 80s abused that snare. Those brits make great music time and time again. Double bonus for writing a great goth pop song the Chaffeur that would later be covered by one of my favorite bands Deftones.
I typically am not a huge fan of 80's pop and some of the sounds on this album are overplayed to me (but haven't aged like a ton of 80's pop), but this album is pristine and basically perfect. The songs are all so cohesive together. Extremely consistent sound through the whole thing. Shocking that this reviewed poorly when it came out. Last Chance on the Stairway and Save a Prayer are fantastic cuts, along with the two songs I've heard before, Rio and Hungry Like A Wolf.
What a great album. It's fun, classic, full of hits. The deeper cuts take one back into the MTV 80's era.
I liked this album a lot! Duran brings the vibe. The flute and the xilaphone hit well for me. And exceptional sound design and pacing through the album
Overall: 7/10 Duran Duran is just a fun time, man. I used to get roasted in high school for that opinion all the time, but once we graduated everyone I knew all of a sudden loved these guys! That's why my friends always trust my music opinions now. Anywho, there's some bangers on here. The title track alone is not only a fantastic song, but it has one of my all time favourite music videos. Hungry Like the Wolf is a classic, Last Chance On the Stairway is super underrated and overall I had a great time with this one. It isn't Tchaikovsky or anything but it makes me happy. Fav Song: Rio Least Fav Song: Save a Prayer
Bop after bop
So many hits on this album. I've never listened to it in full before. Good one for singing at the top of your lungs at 80s night or in the shower.
Lots of bangers on here. Best way to listen - convertible top down at twilight driving back from the beach in the 80s.
not my vibe
disco rock fun. Favorite track: Rio other picks: my own way, hungry like a wolf, new religion
Great band from the 80’s. And still recording today. Great album.
Love that album
Classic 80s vibe....so I dig it
Admittedly, closer to 3.5 but Hungry Like the Wolf pushes it over. The album is super 80s, perhaps even more so than Tears for Fears, and most of the songs can feel like they're just different verses of the same song. A lot of it can feel predictable and repetitive. However, Duran Duran is still legendary and Hungry Like the Wolf is so good.
A fun album, I enjoyed it more than expected
Some bangers
Great synth/dance pop. Listen if your in that kind of mood.
Infectious choruses and driving instrumentation. You can take this record anywhere. Some songs put me by the beach while others put me on a night’s drive. I’m a big fan of New Wave/Synth Pop/80s Alt and this is right up my alley. Of course I’m familiar with Duran Duran - however, I’ve never played a record of theirs in its entirety. Truly a legacy band of the 80s and onward. Favorites: Rio, My Own Way, Save a Prayer
It’s that one Duran Duran album that has most of their hits and more or less defined one of the key sounds (and looks) of the 80s. It’s a pretty decent album, but it’s almost impossible to approach it with fresh ears.
This is just a fun album, and it's earlier in the 80s than I always thought of Duran Duran being. It's easy to see why this album was such a success. It's such a perfect blend of synth pop and rock, and there's all these other fun elements that come together to make it work so well. If only pop music could always have been this good 4/5
A classic
Really tight uptempo new-wave pop. Mostly nonsensical lyrics, a state which adds to the entertainment. Some interesting deep cuts. Mostly fun and spontaneous, and I kinda hate to say it, but I think "Save a Prayer" is a good song. If I were teaching a class about this era, I would use this song as an example.
Two words. THE. CHAUFFEUR
Really liked this album

Classic, great album
This album is a bass player's dream. Really liked it!
Solid album. Would listen to this album again. Slamming Bass lines for days! Knew the hits. Never listened to this album before. Did add the album to my library after listening to it. Definitely like some deep cuts that would add to playlists in the future. Love New Religion, My Own Way, Last Chance on the Stairway. Didn’t really care for Chauffer and Hold Back the Rain. Possible 4 rating
Muy interesante. Música simple pero efectiva
low 4
I don't know how to explain what exactly it is and how I could even call it, but this 80s vocal style or vocal mix with all this reverb is not anywhere near my favorite thing sonically - it sounds incredibly dated these days. But on this album, it somehow sounded pretty nice and refreshing. But probably not due to the actual vocals, but the songs. Some great variety in here! Ballads, more aggressive stuff, dancing. Intriguing bag of songs for sure.
Duran Duran sort of embodies the 80's for me. I wasn't alive then, but just listening to Duran Duran and synth-pop/new wave by association transports me to that decade. The fact that the group was pretty much a mainstay on MTV in its early days gives that feeling a lot of credence too. (2/3rds of this album had associated music videos, which is kind of wild to me) This was probably their seminal album too, with singles such as "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" present here. Largely upbeat and fast, supported by guitars and various synth sounds among others. The pace slows down a bit near the end of the album, where the synth shines a bit more (as well as the ocarina!). Overall, a good representative of the vision of 80's synth-pop (with a little more).
8/10
Meni je album vrh, volim ih 😊 baš fini 80s zvukovi i vajb, po mom ukusu 👌🏻 Visokih 4/5, 8/10.
Ah yet another UK group from the 80s, really showing the bias of the makers of this list. That said, this was actually a welcome album to listen to, one of the best to come out of the Fueled by Cocaine era. Songs like Rio and Hungry like the Wolf, while not songs I've actively listened to before, have appeared in numerous classic rock / 80s playlists, and have found their way into my subconcious. Other standouts include My Own Way and Save a Prayer. Solid 4/5 Album for me
Оценка 4 из 5 для альбома Rio группы Duran Duran основана на том, что он содержит как запоминающиеся треки, так и те, которые оставляют более мягкое и мелодичное впечатление.
Typical 80s style music, I enjoyed the listen
enjoyed this one
This was a pretty great album overall. I think I enjoyed every single track, but they did all blend together a bit. I imagine I'll be listening to Duran Duran more in the future. Favorite track: probably "Hungry Like the Wolf"
Rio by Duran Duran is pretty much the 80’s distilled in an album. From the cover to the use of synth in everything, it encapsulates the whole ten years. But Rio has many things that make it stand out from the other 80’s albums that had a mandate to use synth. Rio is the perfect bastard love child of new wave, pop, and rock. It takes all the elements from the genres and mixes them very well. Simon Le Bon sounds like he is the living definition of “supersonic” and his fellow band members know how to accompany him. But the biggest praise has to go to the bass. It’s that meaty bass that just slaps. I don’t know the exact term for it, I kind want to call it Seinfeld-like. Whatever it is, it literally escalates songs like New Religion to classic status. My only gripe is that a couple of the songs on side one sound a little similar to Hungry Like the Wolf. They come off as a little samey. But outside of that, this is as peak as new wave-pop can get. Awesome album. Favorite track: Hungry Like the Wolf Other hits: Rio, New Religion, Save A Prayer, The Chauffeur, My Own Way
Listened to this while playing The Loop. I lost. This album was pretty great! You can't go wrong with the wolf song...and i also really enjoyed the closing track. Rio is also a great opener. All around solid!
February 2nd, 2025 ~ #1 7/10 went in with low expectations since this was a new genre for me, was pleasantly surprised to find how ahead of its time this album was. i appreciate how polished and modern the sounds are, even more than 40 years after its release; i think that alone speaks volumes about its production. but it's clear that some tracks feel a bit dragged out (personally new religion, last chance on the stairway) overall though, not a bad listen. notable tracks: rio, my own way, hungry like the wolf, save a prayer
It's the best 80s pop album I've heard so far. That particular era had some awful tunes. Not as bad as some songs today though. I always thought Duran Duran were the kings of cheesy. The title track alone debunks that misconception. 4 stars for "Rio".
The bass lines on the first two DD are just insane. I mean, I can't stand the radio hits anymore, but this album still just kicks ass!
Really good synth-pop album, good flow from the first song until the last. The Chauffeur was a "surprise" for me because I had only heard it from the Deftones cover album. The original Duran Duran version is a solid one as well.
Great album. I accidentally listened to an album that was basically just versions of Rio over and over...it didn't get annoying and I think that speaks to how great that song is. Hit after hit on this song. Simon LeBon has such a great voice. Duran Duran is like if The Cure wasn't so depressed all of the time.
Songs i knew:3 Songs i liked: most of em Maybe I'm just in an 80s phase rn but loved this, they really were a pretty solid band for their era. Will be back here again. Low 4.
Thought I would hate But thought it was great
Kick ass album. Forgot about how fantastically they can meld harmonies and instrumentals (especially SAVE A PRAYER). Other highlights (aside from the timeless RIO and HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF) were LAST CHANCE ON THE SUBWAY, and the haunting intro to THE CHAUFFEUR
Generally a Duran Duran fan, but the backing beat of "the chauffeur" is not an acceptable thing to have playing for over 5 minutes straight
Honestly very enjoyable and kind of corny music of the 80s. I liked.
never noticed how good the bass playing is on this until I read the album reviews pointing it out.
нормалек.
A lot of big hitters on this banging 80s album, who knew? Love me a bit of synth pop. Faves: Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer, Hold Back The Rain
24/01/25 I like this album, it's got some good funk to it.
As a kid of the 80s, it would be impossible for me not to rate this album while considering the iconic "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" music videos. This band defined the decade's musical landscape, both on the radio and television. While the album may have a few weaker tracks, the hit songs are absolute monsters that have stood the test of time.
I really enjoyed listening to this slice of 80s pop. It's exactly what you think it'd be if I told you that was the genre, but that's okay.
Un viaje a mí infancia, muy buena producción
Lovely bit of album, and one of them is a Villa fan. Easy to listen to and I had fun with it
For some reason I thought I didn’t like Duran Duran but I actually really enjoyed this. It was dark and sexy and cool.
Didn't realize there were so many hits on this album. Liked it more than I expected
You know it’s going to be a good day when the album is already in your music library. I love 80s pop obviously so today was indeed a good day.
Rhythm section is outrageously good. Funk and disco inspired. And the drum production is bombastic. Toms sound like tuned garbage cans. And the band is phenomenally tight. I'd never listened to this full album before. I'm super glad I did. I will listen again.
Classic ‘80s. I wasn’t into them then due to all my classmates being obsessed, but rediscovered this album in the mid ‘90s and have liked it ever since.
Nú þarf ég að passa að nostalgían hafi ekki áhrif á dómgreindina. Það er samt mjög erfitt. Algjörar neglur á þessari plötu og massív stemmning. Ég held samt að mér finnist hún nægilega góð fyrir fjarka en með fyrirvara um nostalgíuáhrif
Hungry Like the Wolf is one of the best songs ever, but the rest of this album is also really great 80s pop.
Iconic 80s singles and videos. Duran Duran was such a club band. The occasionally forgettable filler material weights this otherwise excellent album down. There's just one or two too many tracks that contribute nothing but a feeling of tedium when listening to the record end-to-end. Unforgettable album cover though.
