Reviews (page 4 of 8)

This is the strangest thing I’ve ever heard. There were parts that were legitimately interesting, but by the end, I wanted Frankie to make a visit.

This was interesting and a little disturbing for one song.

I was not expecting to like this because of the title but I did. Not something I would listen to over and over but I still liked it.

þetta er gott en ekki endilega mjög skemmtilegt. skrækir við og við minna á brúsa foringja. 3,5.

I really liked some of this! But I only kinda liked the rest of it. Three stars

This is my first time listening to Suicide and it was a trip. The beauty in this music is it's simplicity and dark undertones. Some of the lyrics are a bit shocking, case in point, Frankie Teardrop however as an artist evoking such emotions is clearly the intent. 1977 was very refreshing for me, especially considering the vast amount of overproduced tracks being released now a days. I really enjoyed this album and will listen to it again.

Short. Dark. I skipped Frankie Teardrop after a minute or two. The slow, plodding description of a man's plan to kill his family was not something I was prepared to listen to in that moment. Not my kind of music I don't think, but I can't fault it for being in a genre outside my taste.

This was a rough listen. I really loved what they were doing with electronic music. The vocals got me down. I can't quite figure out how to rate it, like both a 4 and a 1. It gets a 3 but with an asterisk that it probably should be a 2.

Oh my god, that one song was so creepy: "Frankie Teardrop." This was overall a weird album and not really what I was expecting. I don't know that I enjoyed it, but I admire the unique quality of a lot of it.

this was not even a little bit what i thought it would be. there were a lot of sounds that sounded almost serrated? like someone left an oscillating fan on. feels ripe for sampling. would have been a four but had to knock it back down for horny moaning and kid-killing lyrics on the back half

If nothing else, this album was…interesting. Its sound is like low-fi drone background with satirical classic rock/pre-new-wave vocals. It almost sounds like Nick Cave if he were to say every word on an over exaggerated out breath. The subject matter lives up to the bands name, it’s dark, obsessive, mutilatory, and deranged. Frankie Teardrop is the peak of the album and one of the darkest songs I’ve heard. I actually didn’t mind it overall. I’m glad I listened but I can’t imagine returning to this album much as long as my mental health remains in good shape

Girl and Frankie teardrop were memorably awful rest was fine which is ironic because I can't name any other song

I would have rated this higher had the vocals been more imaginative, but at the end of the day, I'm glad to have listened to this album. The hate it seems to get on here is both unwarranted and misplaced, especially considering how many CRAP albums get ranked much higher! 3 combs brushing against the grain out of 5

Frankie Teardrop is interesting. I like the idea of what they’re doing, but it doesn’t quite do it for me.

Some interesting moments in a couple of the songs, but otherwise...meh.

when I saw this album influenced bruce springsteen, i was intrigued. but boy i could not hear that influence at all until i listened to the track 'frankie teardrop' which you can tell bruce was directly inspired by for 'state trooper' that aside, the album is interesting. it's described as a punk album but because of the sparseness of the arrangements (just keyboard and vocals) it doesn't have the unabashed loudness you expect from a punk album, but a more subdued, yet still energetic form of music. from that standpoint, i enjoyed a completely unique take on a genre in it's naissance more than maybe some of their other contemporaries in the punk scene. that being said, the songwriting here is pretty barebones (it is punky after all) and if you don't have the loud, bombastic instrumentation from that, you focus on the songs more and i don't know if i think the songs are strong enough to carry this album otherwise. it's a cool album, but i'm not sure i'll come back to it again.

Interesting music. Some of it drones on.

Disturbing, especially that 10 minute track Freddie got Fingered or something. Cherie was then only song that was beautiful and haunting.

Rhythm box beats, repeating patterns, and the truth. Stark lyrics befitting of the band's name. Standout song for me is Cheree.

What a weird little album. On its own, it doesn’t do very much. But in context? Wow I cannot believe this was made in 1977. It sounds so modern and I can hear so many influences and riffs that have been borrowed since. Frankie teardrop filled me with dread. As did much of the album. Just a bad weird feeling. Not drug friendly music I think.

Cerebral and distinctly ugly in a raunchy way, where songs are unnecessarily drawn out but impactful nonetheless.

Yesterday was Britney Spears. Ghost Rider and Rocket USA did not prepare me for the rest of the album. Cheree begins to get there and the dichotomy between the rhythm, lyrics and the... almost ice cream truck bells is eerie. It's gives stalker vibes. I really didn't need to listen to 4 minutes of foreplay ("Girl") or a decent into madness and dispair and murder ("Frankie Teardrop") but the propulsive pace of the album can't be denied. Will I skip those two tracks in the future? 100% (thank god I'm not doing these on vinyl). I can see how an angry and disaffected movement would be furthered by this work.

do i like it? not really. but it's definitely interesting, bracing, and quite obviously very ahead of its time. I can't really say i hated it, although i do hope I'm able to go the rest of my life never hearing "Girl" again

💀/💀 just like it

Interesting record. I don’t think I would replay this often, but it was interesting hearing all of the things in it that other groups in coming decades took and expanded on. Didn’t realize that Ghost Rider from the Crow was a cover.

If interested, check out the article about this album in Pitchfork. Basically, the álbum is a tuned-down version of how the band sounded live. Live, it seems that their sound would melt the flesh from your bones. This album cannot do that but still shakes with tension.

I can't say I love this album but I'd probably be a sucker for a lot that it inspired. They prob had no interest in being radio friendly but channeling their aesthetic into something just a touch more poppy would have been dead on for me. I just keep thinking of Jim Greco.

I am familiar with this album, but this is the first time I'm listening to it for a review. I've been a fan of Ghost Rider and Cheree, bit haven't really given the rest of the album a good listen. Ok, so maybe some stones are best left unturned. Aside from the tracks I knew previously, Rocket USA was pretty good, but after Cheree it dissolved into a disaster. Overall though, I feel it was worth a listen before I die.

I realize not every song out there has to be catchy. Hell, not every song has to necessarily be a "song," but it is always so jarring when something like that comes along, and its incredibly hard to adjust in a timely matter. Such is the case with much of this album, where any sort of normal song structure is thrown out for droning synths, sinister vocals, and an overall oppressive atmosphere. It works for a majority of the album, with its repetitive drive being oddly infectious, albeit many of the songs go on for too long, and I'd even say it has a melancholic feel to it at times, not unfamiliar to Velvet Underground fans. However, what seems to be considered the star of the show is Frankie Teardrop, and I mean that in any which way. Its a piece of avant-garde brutality, both on the mind and the ears. The piercing screams can cause even the most iron-willed listener to shiver, and... I hate it. I know its supposed to make me uncomfortable, but its downright a blight on an otherwise pretty decent record. Its too long, it comes out of nowhere, and in a modern age it doesn't come off as disturbing, rather edgy for the sake of nothing. Its the musical equivalent of a jumpscare, and in that aspect its memorable, but nothing to actually ponder, save for a throwaway line about there being a Frankie in all of us. The rest of the album is a synth-punk classic that earns its notoriety, but that single song bumps it down in such a way I can never see myself listening to this front to back again. Wish I could be enlightened enough to get it, but I'm not, and I really don't care to get there if that's what's awaiting me.

Before listening: I have no idea who this is. The other bands where I didn't know any songs, I at least had heard of them. I have never heard of this band. I'm guessing late 80s punk. After listening: I ... think I liked it. Very atmospheric; not something I'd actively listen to, but I really like the sound of it. Is it a concept album? I tend to hate concept albums but I liked this one.

3.9 - An unusual combination of primitive programmed percussions, and queer Elvis talking in his sleep. The showstopper is “Frankie Teardrop” that sets off this radical minimalism into something dark and macabre.

You know, I pretty much liked it. Definitely a weird vibe, but I just love the combination of droning sounds and spacey effects. It would be great to use as the score of a horror movie. I probably would've rated it higher except a third of the runtime is taken up by the song "Frankie Teardrop" which goes a little too far and tips into halloween sound effects record territory.

Frankie Teardrop goes insane, very experimental. I liked it but it's too long for the concept. Trance like but the screaming took me out of it. Very interesting, 7/10

There are parts to this I really liked. And then some I didn't

Ghost Rider - 8/10 Rocket USA - 8/10 Cheree - 8/10 Johnny - 7.5/10 Girl - 7.5/10 Frankie Teardrop - 7.5/10 Che - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 42/70

What? Freddie is gonna WHAT? AAAAAGHHHHHHHGHHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Used to like this album a lot. The New York/Lou Reed vibes. The Cherree song. The electronic sound. etc. But nowadays cannot stand the screaming and prefer the Alan Vega and Martin Rev album. But this is still an influential album that certainly belongs to the list.

First time listening to this. Definitely see where this record had many influences on electronic music and goth-punk going into the eighties. A bit of a depressing listen. You have to be in the right mood for this.

Ghost Rider: 4/5 Rocket USA: 3/5 Cheree: 4/5 Johnny: 3/5 Girl: 3/5 Frankie Teardrop: 2/5 (felt more like a challenge than a song but it did makr me feel something for sure so i'll give that) Che: 3/5

Strong start weak finish

experimental

Interesting. Not something I'd feel comfortable listing to with children in the room.

I get what they’re doing here, obviously very sharp social critique. It almost feels more like theater than music at one point so I’m not really sure how to rate it

so dark and heavy. can feel the influence of this on all sorts of post-punk, early electronic and even new wave on here. Ghost Rider sample used perfectly, both musically and thematically in MIA's Born Free. One of those albums I really appreciate but don't want to listen to often (filed right next to Bauhaus).

Bleak. I see the influence on future music and other artists. I can't say I'll ever listen to this again.

Giving Frankie a gun seemed like a bad idea

Some freaky deaky rock n roll inspired twisted 50s horror story, occasionally sparkles.

Experimental.

A bit too weird for me

interesting stuff i thought

It was ok

First on the list I haven't heard. Into a bunch of this. Def need to check out all the bands they influenced - throbbing gristle, soft cell, erasure, bronski beat, yaz, caberet voltaire

Every song seemingly has the same synthesizer and percussion in the background, so there isn't a ton of variety here. "Frankie Teardrop" is, of course, a ton listen and that's not including the screaming heard throughout the song. I enjoyed this album more than I expected to and this is so bizarre I think it must be heard.

Hard to believe this came out in 1977. And I didn't hate it as much as I expected. For some reason the craziness was slightly compelling to me - maybe I'm finally coming around to experimental shit with under 100 albums to go! 6/10

3/5. A very intense and quiet album, not planning on listening to it multiple times but it was enjoyable nonetheless, more from a comedic factor for how over the top some of the singing was. It is also, at the same time, insanely terrifying, at least the 10+ minute long track on there. But there is a subtle threatening air throughout the whole album. Would not recommend but also would.

Save for "Frankie" this record has truth-in-labeling issues. Joy Division feels darker (at least in a sophisticated, aesthetically-engaged way Sartre-esque way), though this is eerie-ominous, for sure. And not bad overall, and clearly ahead of its time; indeed, the psychedelic and prog-y flourishes (e.g., organs on "Girl") make it seem borderline pleasant at times. "Cheree" feels modern, certainly predictive of New Wave proper. And "Johny" seems like it wants to be '50s sort of rocker or perhaps an early '80s pop tune. The clicking background hiss (from the drum machine perhaps) feels like iffily-pressed old vinyl or like crickets-cicadas on a summer night in the the South. As for "Frankie," which is boring because plodding rather than suspense-building, one vastly prefers "The End," for its clearer narrative thrust and stronger character development and Morrison's presence On the other hand, one thinks NIN and all that more-enraging-than-artfully-enraged ilk might have taken a page from from these cats and kept it, you know, quieter, which is much more interesting, they should understand.

Hey beeby, beeby, beeby… Ghost Rider set up an expectation that the rest of the record doesn’t always deliver on. But it does stick to the good bits: stripped down, minimalist, lo-fi keyboard with sparse reverb-ed out vocals. I love a couple of the songs on this album… but not as much Frankie or Girl which I find too dramatic and pretty annoying. The music is great though. Music would be a 5 but the irritating songs pull it down to a 3.

This was fine. Some of the songs were interesting. Some are WAY to long. I may listen again, but not anytime soon.

Too many of these already.

Nothing excitable or special

Áhugavert. Hefur verið ansi framsækið á sínum tíma.

The thing about Suicide is they have a cool sound but their songs also kind of all sound the same and have similar structures.

I'm glad I heard this album, I really appreciate the art of this. Music is meant to make you feel things and that's exactly what songs like Frankie Teardrop do. I can fully understand how this is influential and years ahead of its time. I just didn't like it much.

Very challenging and intriguing album, really cool tracks like Cheree and the menacing Frankie Teardrop, quite an experience.

I don't hate it, but a few of the tracks like Girl are so ridiculous it sounds like they are taking the piss outta the listener. Some of it also annoys, but I do like the general groove formula. I can see why people would like it though.

Started off loving this album, but really tailed off after the first few songs got a bit too weird to really enjoy. Clearly desveres it’s place on the list, but doesn’t make my regular rotation.

There's some good, original content. Lots of creative tunes. Some of it was not really my style, but overall, it was pretty good.

Alan Vega routinely lopped a decade off his age. I'm not sure why, but that takes guts... I know why people like this album, or why people think this album should be liked (not always the same thing). I know that Death in Vegas and LCD would not exist without this album. (A mixed blessing in this household, tbf, but the underlying principle stands.) All that said. I'm going to bed.

Brilliantly different. And years ahead of its time. Frankie Teardrop is a song that belongs in a Gasper Noé movie. It is a deep and troubled journey to hell. Much of the album feels that way as well. The more I listen the more I like it. 3.5/5

The album is simplistic. It's not great or terrible.

Didn't love it but had an interesting sound. Might listen again

I was scared when I heard "minimalist electronics and harsh rhythms" but this was actually nice until the end. It was cool to hear non-Kraftwerk, pre 80s electronic rock music and while the vocals weren't amazing they weren't annoying *until the last two songs*. Frankie Teardrop was grating, boring, and bad all around and the last track didn't save the ending at all. Ghost rider was probs my fav though.

This album feels very ahead of it's time. Very unique blend of electric and rock. Definitely has parts where it is very weird though.

Kind of ambient. Okay.

Progressivt, men intressant ändå.

first listen really cool sound but the vocalization choices kinda kill it for me

Interesting. Probably need to listen again. We had a fella come in to do a few snags in the kitchen while the song where he makes sex noises was on.

Some tracks could make it onto your Drugs playlist. I got the feeling that 2000's groups like The Rapture may have been inspired by these vibes. But not in a way that anything would have been lost without this album.

Highlights: "Johnny," the background ambience seeping through the percussion in the middle of "Frankie Teardrop" Hard to say how much credit to give this. Tangerine Dream, Silver Apples, and Velvet Underground were ten years ago. We've had harsh creepy loops. True, full mix slapback is scary on a primal level. We've had tongue-in-cheek grotesques of capitalist Americana. I guess this is just the most complete, overt precedent for the stifled affectation of goth music. The one that made its way to David Lynch and William Basinski in LA. The repetition of both the music and the ideas does contribute to the ultimate sense of being trapped. In that way, it still feels current as theater more than music.

This isn't exactly an easy album to listen to, but it is worth a listen.

Very easy to enjoy.

Promising start with ghost rider, rocket usa, and chereeafter which it becomes unhinged.

actually felt sick listening to frankie teardrop idk just came away from the whole album feeling unwell gonna give 3 stars to this album because it definitely made me feel things but also i never want to hear it ever again

They claim to be the unrecognised forefathers of dark 80s synth pop but all I hear is Iggy. Still relatively interesting to listen to.

I dont hate it, and its certainly unique. Especially when you consider the time it was released, its groundbreaking stuff. That said, there arent any stand out tracks and its not amazing. 3/5

Suicide starts off like your typical rock album but then it melds into an electro-synth-wave piece that evokes the feeling of going under into a much darker place with the band. Particularly on Frankie Teardrop, with it's storytelling of a father's eventual descent into hell. Best: Johnny Worst: Rocket USA 3.5 Stars

Cool experimentation, definitely ahead of its time. It's an interesting piece of history, but as a listening experience, I wanted more progress in the songs themselves. Most of them build very little off the central idea/pulse that is introduced at the beginning.

Not your average Tuesday morning album! I actually like some Suicide sings but have never made the connection that they were the ones who wrote the 10 minute murderous song I somehow came across in my childhood. I appreciate the artistry. I also enjoyed hearing the influence of other genres through this album's style: minimal, fuzzy, droning.

Synth-punkelectronic rock. Da miedito.

Synth punk? Absolutely. Minimalist? You bet. Interesting? Sure! Listen again? Probs not.

little bit jarring. the 10 min song, in jamie’s opinion “best song on album”. disagree but kinda cool. made me feel like this : 👺 Jamie: “no wave >>>> new wave, suck out”

this was weird. i liked it at first. then they were moaning and whimpering and screaming and it was a little off putting. the song from the marc jacobs daisy advert caught me off guard daysee daysee daysee

It's easy to dismiss this today but I would have found this ground breaking in the late 70s. In the late 70s a friend gave me a tape of a  LA radio station program that introduced me to the song "Warm Letherette" which I never forgot. It was a minimalist synth-pop one hit wonder that had quite the cult following in the late '70s. It was so out there and so cool back then. I would have thought the same about Suicide; both bands were OG. If I knew Suicide in 1977, I would probably rate them higher.  But I didn't.

This album is way ahead of its time, very interesting pulsating beats with otherworldly vocals. It's not as bad as some say, but it would be much better if it had a bit of variety. This is a solid 2.5 but I'll round it up due to their originality.

een paar coole geluiden, tof voor op de achtergrond

I am not familiar with this band but expected something more punky based on the cover. As it got going I thought this is fine. A little weird, not in the best way, I don't love it really, but fine. Then I got to Cheree and thought no, this actually not enjoyable to listen to. I wish I had given up after Girl. Suffering through that "song" just rewards you with Frankie. Jim Morrison's The End works for me this song absolutely does not. All of that said, I have to give Suicide stars for being unique and accomplishing something interesting. This music is not meritless, it just isn't for me.

Sure. Sure.

Art punk! Or punk art ...

Hele wiki over dit plaatje gelezen omdat het me wel intrigeerde, maar echt heel goed wordt het nooit, hoewel dit wel echt als zeer vooruitstrevend werd gezien destijds.

Rating: 6/10

Dirty dirge

Despite its flaws, I like this LP for presenting something completely different. While repetitive, the synth backing tracks are distinct for the time period, and the frenetic vocals do line up with the thrumming background energy.

Speciaal album. Sommige nummers zijn wel dansbaar

I can't say enjoy is a term I would use with this album but it was a really interesting listen. I noticed that the first song has been sampled by MIA. I also recognized that several songs had been covered by other bands.

really dark and intense

I… I genuinely do not know how I feel about this. I’m no stranger to stuff on the weirder side. I’ll take an Ornette Coleman entree with a side of Captain Beefheart and The Shaggs, and wash it all down with a glass of Sunn O))). But here, I am baffled. Bemused. Befuddled. Be-fucked up on all accounts. Genuinely unlike anything I’d ever heard before. My attention was so deeply captured, I was like a poor fly in fly paper just waiting to die. And I’d stick myself back there again, even when it sounds like a teenager sitting on a keyboard while absolutely blasting rope. I think I’m broken. How do I even give this a star value.

A very weird album. I can't say I loved it--it was trying a little hard to be edgy for my tastes (an impression that the band name doesn't help correct)--but it was respectably listenable. It does deserve to be on this list, simply for the fact that it's really weird. Uneven track listings and timings, a lack of structure, and a sound that facilitates distinctive preferences for one track over another--but like a lot of memorable albums, no one can agree on which tracks are good. Personally, my fave picks were "Girl" and "Cheree". But yeah...this wasn't my thing. Bumping it up from 2-star enjoyability, simply because there's at least some creativity that brings distinctiveness to each track, which is more than I can say for other artists on this list (looking at you, Paul Weller).

art school exhibition music

Like Dear Zachary, Suicide by Suicide is a good piece of media that is difficult to consume more than once

A landmark album that sort of changed the world forever that's sort of also painful on my little baby ears.

Definitely an interesting album. Not a huge fan of the music style and screaming, etc. still interesting to listen to and I can appreciate it as a work of art ahead of its time

Weirdly experimental for the time I could hear sonic youth, jesus and Mary chain and the white stripes in it. Dont know if they were aware of this band. Started strong then tailed of was beginning to lose interest then jonnys crying or whatever came on. That was intense drama pre dating Stan by slim shady by many years a kinda gothic horror story very intense. Overall wasn't sure if I liked it or not but will definitely remember it was an experience!

Quite fun, new to me and I will give it another listen for sure

Not really my thing. The last few tracks are interesting, however. Makes you feel like you're on drugs

Welly welly well.. where to start. I absolutely love the music. Made me want to get my mastersystem out and fire up "james pond: robocod." How they achieved the sounds in 77, i dont know. However... frankie and girl with the screams and moans are just not fun to listen to. A really hard one to rate.

Third time listening to this album. Didn't like it the first two. It's not as boring as I remember, but I still couldn't really get into it.

it's ok 3.5/5

Hypnotic electronic riffs over disturbing and depressing lyrics. I could like the music but the vocal puts me off.

Hahaaha jag skulle aldrig vara två dagar efter LOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL semibangers annars Den långa sången om frankie va bra

The repetitive simplistic beats serve the uneasy atmosphere well. Maybe a bit prototypical as a whole, but still an album you have you hear (even if most of it is because of Frankie Teardrop)

Not my favorite album but the Nods Dogs in Space podcast episodes about this band are amazing and I’m still really impressed with what they’re able to do with the limitations they had

Interesting at first, but ultimately just annoying. The lyrics are quite complex (and sometimes haunting) so kudos to that. But Vega's screams or sighs (e.g., on Frankie Teardrop or Girl) are a bit much. Rev's synth beats were cool at times but felt a little monotonous. Still, I enjoyed Ghost Rider and Johnny...quite a bit. This album feels like one of those things you're proud to say you've done once but would never do again. Could just as easily be a 2 or a 3 but I'll go higher for it's uniqueness (and trailblazing...of something I don't care much for).

Raw electronica from before electronica was a thing. The value in Suicide may not be with Suicide themselves, but from all that they inspired. Beats the hell out of Wild Beasts, if nothing else.

Stylistically interesting for 1977; not what I would expect from an American rock band around that time. Can hear punk-esque aspects to this album, but the synths and electronic stuff adds texture to it all. Sometimes a little on harsh and screaming side of things, which I don't usually like, but overall this is interesting stuff.

first few songs -4 last few songs - 1

Well that was weird. But also way better than I expected. I’d almost listen to it again.

Okay this entire album is structure perfectly and the repeating instrumentation felt weird but also soothing. But my god Frankie Teardrop may genuinely be the creepiest song I have ever head and legitimately gave me shivers multiple times. I will need to reslisten to this album but I am not sure ab the replay value. The album is genuinely impressive but I'm not sure if it's an album I necessarily want to go back to. As much as I absolutely love dark demented music this album is almost to the point of just feeling like a satanic album that I might not feel like touching again lmao. 7/10

I liked most of it I think, heavy industrial rock with synth but that one 11 min song not my jam. 3.5

Felt like 32 minutes of waiting for the drums to kick in.

Little dark, not gonna lie. Good music tho

Not my style but can respect

Me ha parecido interesante el tipo de música, pero el disco aparte de ser muy corto no sólo tiene un par de ellas destacables. Aun así, entretenido.

I don't think I expected this to feel like a Kim Gordon album

i've listened to this album a few times, it lulls you into a false sense of security by having a good A side but then it waxes your testicles and pisses in your ears on the B side. the whole screaming thing is not made for headphones. still, its the solid basis for a lot of the shit i listen to these days.

Interesante

I wouldn't say i liked it per se but it surely is interesting. One other thing is that Frankie Teardrop is a challenge to get through.

Not my preference. It was not bad just not my genre

So close to being very good. Some of the synth is just a bit off/jarring but I can see the influence/precursor to some of the music I like now. Full disclosure: I wrote my notes before listening to Frankie... Its a 10 min experience I was not expecting, but am somehow not surprised by

First time hearing this band. It took me a few songs to feel it. At first the songs felt unsatisfying. Like they were teasing some heavy guitar licks but they never come. I think I was expecting more assertive, aggressive music based on the name, album art. This definitely sounds like the stuff that birthed new wave. They remind me of the pretenders and dire straits. Im concerned about Frankie!

Pretty freaking weird, but I've been so bored with my music selection I kind of enjoyed it.

It was fine, nothing super exciting for me

It is interesting and unusual. Not necessarily too sonically creative in places (sparse electronic sound with repeating drumbeat)... but the crazy frankie teardrop has some wild swings. Giving them props.

pretty dope album. LCD soundsystem meets thee oh sees

Really enjoyed some of the tracks on this. Felt an enjoyable almost drum and bass vibe with ghost rider. Couldn't listen to frankie teardrop

I found this to be a very one trick pony, taking elements of bands like The Doors and The Velvet Underground but then lacking anything like the range that made those bands great. Some say challenging, I thought it was meandering and a bit boring!

I enjoyed the instrumentation of Cheree, Girl was very interesting, but I actually liked it. The middle of Frankie Teardrop made me chuckle, which I don’t think was the intended effect??? I don’t think I’ve ever had a song make me laugh before, so in that way, this album IS very unique and groundbreaking. Overall, not unenjoyable. Favorite tracks: Cheree, Girl.

Nope, nope, nope.

Mwah kan weinig mee

Rubbish. Frankie Teardrop may be the worst collection of sounds ever recorded

Album gewordene Handbremse.

This was a weird listen, I read about their influence on other electronica artists but there was nothing in this that really resonated

i dont love it, nor do i hate it...kinda meh

Thoughts before listening: For years I've assumed that despite routinely making best punk album lists, this album was too weird for me, and I never gave it a chance. However I heard a song on a playlist the other day, and it was great. Glad it popped up today. Review: Well okay. My assumption was right. This is too weird for me. The music is basically just droney synths and drum machines with heavily distorted speak sing vocals playing music that sounds like 1950s rock melodies. There's definitely a big Velvet Underground/Lou Reed influence here, but its the VU music that turns me off. Maybe these guys were hanging around the punk scene, but this isn't really punk music. Is this whats called no wave, or at least a major influence on those bands? I can hear where a band like LCD Soundsystem stole from these guys a bit, but they cranked up the beats and turned it into actually palatable party music. This isn't for me. 2-stars

Parhaat: Frankie Teardrop, Che

Holy fuck this is shit, definitely not my type of music

(47/100)

Huh, well, looking at the reviews they seem to range from absolute garbage to unrecognised genius. I sit in the middle. It was OK. I recognised one song from the album as it was used in a TV advert I think. I can hear that this was influenced by the like of The Doors, and I can tell that this influenced other future bands. Does that make this one of the top 1001 albums? Nah, not really. Everyone's heard of The Doors, I don't know many people who have heard of Suicide (well, not in this context, anyway).

no he sido capaz de escucharlo, estoy 0 en el mood. la gente que hace lo qie le da la gana y se la pela me encanta pero lo siento no es para mi

2.1 2x good start but weird end

I had no idea what to expect out of this, but given the name, and the time, I thought punk? Death was punk after all, so why not Suicide? Well, no, it ain't that. I don't know what this was, really. There's a sort of fuzzy throughline, a bunch of spoke-sung words, and very little going on. Proto-ambient music perhaps. Which, whatever, fine, I can hang, but it didn't do much for me. Then when it gets to the screaming in "Frankie Teardrop" I start feeling a bit annoyed.

Very boring stuff here.

A bit pretentious.

I had never heard of this group or this album prior to it popping up for me today. And after reading about how many artists it inspired (including Bruce Springsteen), I'm a little surprised. The music really wasn't at all what I was expecting. To say that some of it is intense would be an understatement. While the music itself isn't necessarily anything spectacular or unusual, the lyrics are quite intense on a few of the songs. Not something you would just play if you were looking to casually listen to some music to enjoy. It was fine to listen to. Nothing that I didn't like. But I don't know that I'd want to listen to it again.

A little slow for me

Pretty uninspired. Nothing that bad just bit dull and repetitive.

Ghost Rider

Odd, especially for 77 but probably was a prelude to the synth-y 80s

No. 182 I tried so hard to like this, but it didnt work.

I tried so hard to like this

This came out a year or so before I regularly subscribed to 'Sounds' music paper, but they'd have surely been all over this. I find it difficult tobelieve this was recorded in 3 days? Surely one? And probably written at the same time and to the same formula... play a few notes on the keyboard of choice, loop, vocal over the top. Jobs a goodun Interesting but too simplistic . Frankie Teardrop is too long Like a lot of 1977 material, made more for effect than art

01) Ghost Rider - 7,5 02) Rocket U.S.A. - 7,0 03) Cheree - 7,0 04) Johnny - 7,0 05) Girl - 5,0 06) Frankie Teardrop - 3,0 07) Che - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,93 (59/100) Current ranking: 718/901

The vocals were consistent in style/form. Unfortunately it wasn't for me so it'll be a 2. The music was more engaging for me.

Ultra repetitive tunes that remind me of how Jimmy Eat World only plays one note on repeat. The only decent song here was Johnny. I do not like this. Not the worst thing I've heard though.

Was okay then got weird

It is quite different for sure.. I am still not sure if it is different in a good or in a bad way 2/5

You can see how this was influential but it was very samey throughout. Cheree into Johnny was great but the rest was forgettable.

Not hearing anything beyond the same thing. One can stop and start pretty much anywhere. It's okay, I guess. Okay to be left off a list of things I need.

It started out so promisingly. A crash of guitar and an interesting sound somewhere between punk and more 80's Depeche. Ode stuff. But then it descended into absolute nonsense. Weird sex noises, long dirges and repetition without invention.

This is very unique and odd. Liked how dark it is, but that's about all. Very one note.

I thought the first song was cool, but I realized during the second song that this would be a tough listen.

Hey! So I hate this! 1.5

I see it might be ahead of its time but it’s a very poor record.

i dont understand this music tbh, not for me... feels like it never goes anywhere, like a bad dream that never ends

Really minimalist music with lyrics that felt like elvis was delivering spoken word observations. I read about some of the bands they influenced, a lot of which I like, and I feel like someone would've got there eventually without this band. Music loops just felt like they were going to build to something and never had a pay off

Really lost me in the second half.

A mercifully short, soporific drone. Truly awful.

I am giving this a 2 for the efforrt. Not that I believe there was a lot of effort put into making this album but at least there was effort in making something that sounded different then and even now almost 50 years later. The music itself sucks. Overly morose with what sounds like an ungrounded mic or something electronic droning over or into every song.

Influence is clear and I'm grateful, but these vocals make me want to kill my self

Experimental but dull

Didn't like. All that moaning and groaning doesn't interest me. And the rest was very forgettable.

На початку альбому було краще, далі пісні стали більш схожі просто на якісь саундтреки

Never heard of them before, and it started off pretty cool ... the back half seemed to fall off pretty sharply.

Started good, but then nosedived pretty quickly. It was more boring than atmospheric/creepy that it wished it was. Elvis impression didn't help either. Nice try at a time when no one was doing anything similar, but just not interesting enough.

This album is mostly decent except for 1) the orgasm noises on Girl and 2) the awful screaming on Frankie Teardrop. For that it gets a deduction.

What a bizarre album. I liked some of the industrial/synth sounds, but the lyrics were so weird and deranged, especially Girl and Freddie Teardrop. It seemed like in every song, the lyrics were mostly just repeating the title over and over again. I give it an extra star because overall it was better than some of the other earlier punk I've heard, but it's still not something I feel like I need to listen to again.

1 stern

I listened to every minute of this record, and I spent most of it thinking of alternative titles for it. Distorted Tambourine? White Noise Egg Shaker? Fuzzy Fuzzy Eighth Notes? Because that's mostly what I heard. Super distorted eighth notes that only stop because the next song is coming on, and guess what - it also has super distorted eighth notes, played from some kind of drum machine, on a loop. There is one song where the super distorted eighth notes disappear from a few seconds, but then - guess what? They come right back! It felt like a blessed relief to not have to listen to those damned things for a while. Anyways. "Cheree" is a standout, as it has the most melody and harmony amongst these songs. And it clearly laid the ground work for Jesus and Mary Chain. But most songs are not like that. And good God - Frankie Teardrop. Hahahhah wow. That's.....that's a song, alright! I suppose! I didn't hate it, but I also didn't really enjoy it at all. It's a well-deserved *I was editing another entry and I re-read this review and having had a week or so between this album and my brain, I have to say - this one stuck with me. It still deserves 2 stars, but I'll be damned if "Frankie Teardrop" hasn't been sitting in my head this whole time. Amazing. TWO STARS

Had never heard of them, would have been fine keeping it that way. Apparently ahead of their time... a New York proto-punk duo, not the British rock I assumed based on vibes alone. Interesting as a historical artifact, less interesting as something to actually listen to.

Very creative, but ultimately boring and/or annoying. 1.5/5.0: Bad

one or two interesting songs, the rest were super annoying

Pas mon style

picks: Ghost rider, cheree

nothing redeeming here. Move on. Note: my 800th! ... yippee...

Not great but not terrible. Quite repetitive and noisy but almost in a good way. I’m leaning towards a 2 rating but only hesitantly.

It wasn't the most enjoyable listening experience but I can say that the production really stands out here. There's an underlying darkness found beneath the sound which is oddly modern. I couldn't really connect with the songs. After a while they start feeling dull and uninspired - more like underdeveloped demos rather than fully finished ideas. The song "Ghost Rider" is a nice opening as it sets the mood for the rest of the album.

I really was not expecting what I got with this album. Wasn't expecting such good, repetitive electronic music. Wasn't expecting such bad lyrics and singing. Definitely wasn't expecting the song from the Marc Jacobs Daisy advert. Johnny is comically bad, Cheree is really good, but the singing is consistently awful. Frankie Teardrop could have been good with a different singer, like a Velvets drone song. Some of the rest sounds like Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

2 out of 5 A few songs were so-so. That Frankie's Teardrop was almost 10 minutes of painful electronic noise and I did not enjoy it one bit.

As a fan of synthpop I’m kinda surprised I never bumped into music by this band at all, which makes claims of their supreme influence on the genre feel dubious to me. I can definitely hear elements that might have rubbed off on the likes of Fad Gadget or Cabaret Voltaire, but what we actually get here is mostly distorted takes on 50s pop. When it veers further from that it starts to get less background and more irritating. It’s like the band playing in the corner of the bar mumbling and yelping over homemade instruments who’s before the ones you’re actually there to see. The longer and weirder it goes the angrier you become — and all the while you get the sense that’s actually the band’s goal. Girl and Frankie Teardrop are things I hope to never hear again. By 1977, Kraftwerk were already well-established… Ultravox had a minor hit with My Sex. Synthesizer duos would have happened without Suicide. I can just award this an extra star for being an influence for genres and bands I love dearly. I’m glad I heard this context, so I suppose it belongs on the list, but I don’t need to hear it again.

This definitely wasn’t my thing although I can see what people might like about it. I liked some of the instrumentation but wasn’t a fan of the vocal style. Could have done without the screaming as well. Fav song: Ghost Rider Least fav: Frankie Teardrop

Synth heavy and very unconventional. Feels like what you might get if you let hipster music students run amok with new equipment. The sound of the synths is interesting though, like a distorted buzzsaw. The vocals are kind of distant and breathy, the drums are muffled, and I'm not really sure what they're going for here. If you played this dangerously loud, ideally while on hard drugs, I bet it would be better. Cheree has an actual melody though, the chimes create a neat atmosphere and the thick low end permeates everything. Girl has a pretty good riff and the organ kind of does its thing for a bit. Frankie Teardrop is 10 minutes long, really driving home the minimalism thing. More bizarre vocals and jump scares. Che, the last track is kind of good. It's mainly just repetitive, grimy electronic stuff, but it does scratch a certain itch in my brain. I'm not sure I actually like it but I feel like if I played it enough I would get hooked on this somehow. Better quit now.

Well…electro-punk and industrial pioneers. An interesting thing, rater than being actually good music.

um wow, definitely cutting edge in a way. like a Lynch movie soundtrack. Not exactly danceable, but ...intriguing?

It was very OK until Girl. Worst song I've ever heard. Two stars because it is ahead of its time for 1977.

Not a great album for me.

I was the fool listening to the front end of this album thinking it was falling short of the intensity I expected from a band called Suicide. A few early tracks would have been at home in the more off kilter moments of early Twin Peaks seasons and I enjoyed from that perspective. And then i obviously got to Frankie Teardrop…which could have fit into Twin Peaks season 3 when they took the darkness off the edge - both being media I endured but did not really enjoy (I’m sure it’s a not a song you are meant to “enjoy” and can appreciate the avante garde of it all but you know what I mean)

Yeah they're onto something but just get too weird

No private session used for Spotify. I had heard "Ghost Rider" several times, but was never that interested in it to dig into more Suicide. Now that I have listened to the complete album, I find it more of the same, just with some jarring screaming. I won't listen to it again.

Early punk vibe

Couple good songs but so much rando noise

Not a fan.

I understand what they were trying to do and the proto goth vibes were great, however Frankie Teardrop made me lose my sanity. I wish I could have recorded the noise I made while listening to it and put that as my review. The last song saved it a little for me.

I kinda liked “Martin Rev's minimalist electronics and harsh, repetitive rhythms” (Wikipedia 😊). Didn’t like anything else.

Unfortunately this did not impress me. I’ve heard much about Frankie Teardrop, how it’s one of the freakiest songs out there, but I’d never fully listened before. And it was ultimately underwhelming. Maybe Maybe listening to Disintegration last night is coloring my opinion on this today, but either way the minimalism on this didn’t connect with me in any way. At the very least, I can respect the movement and art form.

I didn't mind the repetitiveness, even on Frankie Teardrop, but I admit the screaming got old fairly quickly.

ох и чернуха

Some cool stuff but really repetitive

kind of boring

I think this album has an interesting musical concept to bring to the world. I feel it leans too much to independent/punk aesthetics to really leverage the most out of the concept, so it just feels as another wild 70s experiment that doesn't land. But this specific experiment hit some interesting vein and I would've liked this vein to be explored deeper. Having said all that, realistically, I'm not gonna listen to any song on this album ever again.

If you want to listen to a guy moaning and screaming into a microphone over a constant flurry of kicks, this is the album for you!

Started alright, but ended up skipping a few songs at the end because it’s just electric noise

Ouch! I wanted to like it. Alas, I did not. It was punishing, offensive and veered too hard into deliberately ugly material. It gets a point up for early sonic innovation - the electronic experimentation - and its energy. I just don’t want to listen to it.

Influential? Yes. Did I enjoy listening to it? No. I like my fir share of fairly challenging stuff but this did not challenge or provide sonic stimulation. On the subject of stimulation, this is not one to listen to while in school due to the groaning noises.

Very minimal electronic music. Not bad not great.

Jaha det här var ju inget vidare. Börjar helt ok. Inte märkvärdigt. Men Frankie-låten är helt värdelös. 10 min skit. Alltså 1/3 av skivan. Nope.

Bunch of noise

this is the first album that i struggled to get through. for the year that this was released, it is clear just how much of a monumental album this was. it is so far ahead of its time, so punk, and introduces the world to something that really hadn’t been done before. that being said, personally it was a hard listen. the first two tracks were something i could get behind, but as the album went on it almost felt like the structure was falling apart. it was very unsettling, though i’m sure that was intentional. i’m glad i got to have the experience of listening to this album, but i don’t think it is something i will do again.

I'm sorry, but just no.....

I didn’t like it exactly, but I was expecting something far more grating based on these reviews.

The song frankie sounded like a horror movie in my ears!

What a weird album. I do like the sound, its very unique, but still somehow falls flat.

Back in the early 2010s when I was getting into music, it was not cool to like Springsteen if you were a nerd about music. The exception was always Nebraska, which doesn't sound much like the songs he's best known for, and was overtly influenced by this album (just compare it to songs like "Johnny 99" and "State Trooper"). I guess I should thank Vega and Rev for being part of the gateway that got all the nerds to realize Springsteen is good, but I just don't enjoy them that much. Synth punk rockabilly sounds like a great idea, and for a song or two it is! But they don't really have the ability to keep it interesting for the length of an entire album. Go listen to like Silver Apples or Colossal Youth instead.

was kind of vibing until *that* song

An incredibly dismal album with a singular atmosphere. I don’t know if it’s really possible to “enjoy” any of this, but there is a vision there.

Everyone in the global reviews acting like each song isn’t a guitar solo and Lou Reed’s vocals away from becoming something they’d love. It’s not THAT bad. Now, it’s not a great album either. This record was experimental and maybe ahead of its time, it would be iterated on in the years to come. Some of the programmed percussion & drum machines are really nice on “Rocket USA” & “Chree”. And, for aa jarring as the last few songs are, at least the lead singer commits to the stories he’s telling. 2/5 at least it’s memorable

One of those albums whose "historical significance" is considerably higher than the actual "listenability" of the record. I get the creative part, but I've never actually enjoyed listening to most of these songs.

For a record that was released in 1977 this is quite unusual, perhaps ahead if its time. However, unusual does not necessarily mean good. The first part of the album is decent, but “Frankie Teardrop” is a guy telling a story, which I do not consider music.

Maybe the song 'Don't Try Suicide' is actually about this album. Luckily I knew about all the 'Frankie Teardrop' screaming already, but that didn't make it any easier for my little brain (volume-wise I mean, the content is whatever (true about both the screaming and my brain)). The first song is about a Marvel character, which is a nice change from all the Gandalf songs on this list. All the non-screaming songs are fine, but didn't thrill me. 3 in general, 1 for screaming, that's a 2. Highlight: 'Johnny' Lowlight: 'Frankie Teardrop' (don't yell at me!)

Meh. 2 stars.

Pasikartojantis rimtas, kartais keistai hormy dainos. Kartais rėkia.

I'm wondering if the timing of this album ending up in my feed is a coincidence. I'd been looking for it since I saw the Bruce Springsteen move last week. In the movie, Bruce is his house, listening to this, talking about how important it is. I can appreciate the artistic nature of what is going on here, but I don't think I need to have this in the regular rotation. This is one that would definitely get a 2.5 if I had the option of half stars. As it is, I'm going to go with a 2 because I don't think I can justify giving this a 3 because it is experimental and "important" but it isn't likely to be most folk's jam.

Ghost rider, Rocket USA: waiting for it to bust out but never does Cheree, Johnny, Girl: shit electronic Doowop Frankie Teardrop: terrible jump scare yelling, 8 minutes too long Overall very repetitive with very little peaks and valleys, weird mumbly lyrics (except for the clipping screams in Frankie Teardrop, awful). Obviously something avant guard for the time (1977), but too weird for casual listening. Who is this for?

Funniest album I’ve listened to in a while. Could not help but cracking up. I can hear its influence on the music I listen to now, but oh my god this album is terrible

Let’s hear it for Frankie! What the fuck is this? This album forced me to use decimals going forward. Girl and Frankie Teardrop steal the show. What a backloaded album. With Girl you’re experiencing another man’s orgasm. Really coulda done without all the moaning at the end. Can’t say I enjoyed that but hey can a man not get a nut and record it? Now Frankie. Listen, a smarter and more ambitious man than I would confidently know what this album is trying to convey. All I hear is sexual gratification straight into murder suicide. I can see how this might have been controversial and new at the time, so much so I can’t think of a natural predecessor in the years that follow. One could argue you don’t have old school Tyler the Creator without this. The song went on comically long. All songs had solid tunes and questionable but not bad vocals. This felt like Mr. Garrison, Timmy and Cartman collabed on an album. It grew on me second listen when I started to treat it as a comedy album. Perfect spooky undertones for Halloween. 2.5/5

This is something man, I can definitely acknowledge what they were trying to do here but I just don't think it's for me. Frankie Teardrop was one of the strangest listens I've had in a while. That mfer kept screaming in my damn ear. I didn't actively dislike the album, it just felt kind of empty. I guess that's part of the sound, but I found the whole album pretty boring until Frankie Teardrop and then I was like well this certainly isn't boring, but maybe I'd rather that it was. Felt like the 1977 equivalent of Dance With the Devil by Immortal Technique. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you have to be in the right headspace to enjoy it. Or maybe you're not supposed to enjoy it maybe you're just supposed to be like damn that boy Frankie's fucked up, in which case mission accomplished. Then at the end they're like we're all Frankies we're all in hell and I'm like what he say fuck me for? I didn't shoot my 6 month old child and my wife don't put that man Frankie's evil on me. We are not the same. I feel bad because I was hoping I would like this one, but it just really didn't do much for me. I can respect that there's a level of artistry to it, but the guitar on every song felt hollow and repetitive and the vocals just felt like they were jumping in to break up empty space every once in a while. I think the fact that I have so much to say about it is at least something, it's definitely not a nothing burger of an album and it at least made me think. 2/5

Idk man it’s an art form. I’ll give it to them and say that I’ve thought about this album a lot after finishing even though I didn’t enjoy it. No song structure just one sound and a couple layers with sporadic vocals. Frankie Teardrop ruined my day though

every heard an early synth metal album before? i've never heard one either until this day. suicide's debut album is noisy, different, and... between all other critiques, it's innovative. absurdly crunchy guitars are paired with drum machines that blend into static noise and the occasional synthesizer adding some extra flavor to it. the album itself, while inspired from older rock and roll greats, feels like a dark parody. it's a bit disorienting and bleak to listen to... while i was initially fascinated by the synth and drum machine usage, the album is a bit of a sludgefest. it gave me a bit of a migraine more than anything else... but at least i can see what they're trying to do here.... kinda. i don't know.

Some of the bass work during the first few tracks is decent, but there are several negatives on this record. The lyrics are repetitive. Track 5 provides weird orgasm sounds which are pretty creepy, “Frankie Teardrop” is utter rubbish (10 minutes of monotonous guitars and random screaming) and the closing track is poor too. I like the 70s vibe of the first few tracks and the vocalist has a good voice when he does something close to, you know, singing. All the positives from the early moments are undone and outweighed by the trash of the last three songs. They are really bad. I wouldn’t bother listening again anytime soon.

There IS something here. I don't know what, but I didn't instantly think "oh no, why is this here". I suppose an equally valid point would be that I didn't find anything to make me think "yes, I understand why this is here".

This was genuinely difficult to gauge. I didn't think it was particularly inaccessible or out-there. The record felt very modern and approachable. But I also hated Girl. It felt exploitative and devoid of ideas. So, a mixed bag. A very mixed bag.

Experimental doesn’t equal groundbreaking. This was mostly annoying to get through.

Fine but I looked away and back again and I’d gone through the whole album without realising the tracks had changed.

Some catchy songs but it didn't feel extraordinary.

This did nothing for me. I know it's on several top album lists, I just don't know why. Yes, the electronics were somewhat advanced for 1977. The closest thing to a song was "Girl" - but that's not saying much.

Strange but mildly interesting. I don’t hate it.

Alright let's flip a coin. Heads it's boring, tails it's annoying.

horny punk weird for 6am

I expected more based on the name and cover art. Don't judge a book by it's cover and all that. Yeah it's just not doing anything for me. It's not terrible, like I'm listening and don't hate everyone involved with the making of this album. I'm not mad I'm listening, it's just not me.

+1 star for experimenting

wasn't in the right mood

A microphone, Casio keyboard, and cricket/cicada noise.

Not that great.

That was kind of boring...like in a artsy-fartsy way. Sure, I guess this was an attempt to be so anti- that it was anti-anti or no anti. And I hope I don't have to listen to this again. 2 stars

A few tracks were decent, but overall nothing special.

This album peaked in the first two songs. When every song after that was basically the same, there were diminishing returns. When Springsteen says he modeled “state trooper” on “Frankie teardrop,” I get it. Especially that yawp at the end.

Did not really care for this at all. Didn't hate it though.

I won't sit here and say this is actually secretly a stellar album because "art, man." However, they did take a risk with it, and it was certainly ahead of its time, and lord knows I've never heard anything quite like it. By my money, "Frankie Teardrop" is really why this album is on here, and probably what makes Suicide matter at all. I'm not going to say it's a good song, but it does make you stop in your tracks and listen -- which counts for something. It's haunting, disconcerting, and at times downright terrifying. A lot of musicians could probably never pull that off if they tried. Fave songs: Yeah, no.

This wasn’t quite as heavy as the name would suggest. Not really my vibe either. Simpsons: No

Suicide or Suicide? What a question.
