Reviews (page 7 of 11)
Starts strong, and is petty good, but not really enough of anything to make a huge impact. Not quite danceable enough, or hard enough, or sad enough. Title track is a banger tho.
This must've been nice for Bowie fans at the time - not expecting any music, then suddenly an album appears out of nowhere. I think I vaguely remember that time. I'm not a Bowie fan, despite this list trying to convince me otherwise, with its 20 Bowie albums [sarcasm alert]. This album is incredibly consistent. Nothing stands out to me either way, but as a non-fan I found it very listenable.
An enjoyable album, a couple of memerable songs. But nothing as catchy as his ealier stuff.
І найяскравішим прикладом такого, я би назвав трек - Where Are We Now?
It was fine.
~ David Bowie - The Next Day What I expected from a well-aged rock star. The album isn't bad, and there are definitely some good, even great tracks. But it has that kinda plastic, comfortable, "House of Blues" aura, like Paul McCartney albums from the last 10 years or some other rock star of that level. Might just be that I wasn't paying attention to it enough...
Good album worth a listen and take some time with. Not everything is worth the listen.
really liked Valentines Day
Now, you know I love Bowie. However, this was just an OK experience for me. It's got Bowie-level production quality, and it's still better than many of these other "must hear" albums, but nothing here felt particularly special. I wish it had been half the length with twice the depth.
I love Bowie, but this album is weak, I'm afraid.
Pretty good but if you are starting out with Bowie I would check out his classic period first
Godt album. Det er David Bowie
It really does feel that music has passed him by when he made this album. He’s been making music for four decades at this point and it just lacks any sense of modernity. I certainly don’t hate it but it feels out of place for something coming out of the 2010s. I wouldn’t expect Bowie to necessarily change his stripes this late into his career but man does this album just feel like it’s getting by on name recognition.
Best leuke plaat. 7/10 Highlights Dirty Boys Valentine's Day You Will Set the World On Fire
Bowie fans will love it. I thought it was ok Maybe something going over my head. Added an extra star for Where are we now.
No es el mejor de David Bowie
Nice to listen to it a healthy distance from the hype. Next: Blackstar.
Not a huge Bowie person but enjoyed a couple
It just did not resonate with me (or Tim) at all.
This didn’t really hold my attention, even though I wanted it to. The songs were forgettable.
I feel a little guilty for this, since it's Bowie. But "Meh."
I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would-some solid songwriting and Beatles-influenced music. It’s not my favorite Bowie album, but it’s a mature, well produced, tightly written album. 3.5 stars.
Don't really understand why this is here. Not a bad album by any means but it's not one of Bowie's best albums by any stretch of imagination. Valentine's Day is the best song on the album and I appreciate that the album is pretty solid for a late stage icon record but if blackstar hadn't happened, I think we'd all be a little disappointed by this one.
Eh, it was pretty enjoyable. I think I might have vaguely recognized a couple of the tracks. Nothing super standout, but a solid Bowie album.
Not sure. Maybe a bit too hard , not bowiesque enough.
Bowie has always been tough for me. I dont know why. I can pick out neat stuff but nothing sticks. Mad respect for the guy. His voice might bug me a bit as well. I dunno...I'm gonna try hutvthat can't all be zingers.
Nothing really jumped out at me in a good or bad way
I liked the dark tone...
-not bad but arguably the weakest Bowie album I’ve heard so far. none of the songs are necessarily “bad” imo but also there were few standouts. felt like it went on a little long -still had some decent songs though, and I really liked the return to his 70s / early 80s sound. if you’d never told me this came out in 2013 I easily could’ve been convinced it was decades old -Favorites are The Next Day and Love Is Lost
Not any David Bowie I was already familiar with, nothing stuck really well, but it was solid enjoyable listening experience. Not as much experimental stuff going on like some of the mid 2000's albums of his I've listened to
While the music may not be as iconic as others, this album marks the return of the artist to work (Bowie hadn't released an album for almost 10 years).
Good Thing: This list shows me each time more that slowly turn to a bowie fan Bad Thing: Many Contender missed a spot because of this many bowie albums... But who am I to complain. I would rather add the whole Bowie Discography than have to listen to any elvis costello album anymore lmaooo (3.5/5.0)
It's decent. Nothing mind-blowing but certainly good.
Ok, not a big Bowie fan, but i respect the talent.
The first half felt very bland to me. The second half was definitely more expansive but overall I didn't feel much for the music. There were no shining lights that stood out to me and drew me into the album. I'm sure there is some interesting lyrical content wrapped up in here but this is nothing like the early Bowie. Full of energy and originality.
Decent
Matt - Simon -
Love Bowie but didn't love this. Felt long and only a couple songs caught me. Surprised this is the Bowie they chose for the 1001 albums list but maybe there will be more!
Not the best bowie album. Doesn't have quite the same magic and didn't connect with me in the same way as some of his others. Overall though not a bad album, enjoyed listening.
This album went over my head. The "Stars (Are Out Tonight)" was a bit cheesy, and on relistening the lyrics could have been taken from one of Jed and I's improv'd songs after lots of weed and wine (Fuzzed up T-Rex 4eva). 2010s wasn't our best decade for music, unfortunately this seems to have extended to Bowie. It's trying a bit too hard to be cool, maybe something you'd expect from a comeback album following a 10-year hiatus, or just music from 2013. Guitars lacklustre, bit dull? Seeing others' comments on the subsequent album, "Blackstar", I queued it up. It snuck on mid-listen, and unwittingly I thought "Oh fuck, this is good!". I enjoyed that 30s snippet of a song from Blackstar more than any of the songs on this album. Disappointing but forgiven. Struggling how to rate this one after the past few. Dropping the score a tad as it wasn't particularly memorable for me and didn't earn a spot on any playlist. 2.5/5
Did anyone even know this existed, let alone thought to put it on this list?! It was nice to get a Bowie record, even though it may not be a classic one. I enjoyed having this on, and although I can never really decide if I like Bowie's vocals or not, they didn't really bother me too much on this record. Fairly happy with this one!
Pari iskevää biisiä on (sinkut).
7/10
While no doubt Bowie is one of the giants in the world of music, this was not one of my favourites. Some cool tracks but this won’t make its way into my rotation.
Very good.
Bowie usually doesn’t do much for me, this one especially so.
Not sure this would receive much attention if it wasn't a Bowie album?
Not too shabby
lots of bowie in this challenge. OK as background music.
Better than I expected - I’m just getting into later day Bowie and am about to listen to blackstar. Might not listen to this again but glad I did.
What an interesting guy... his later stuff is alright but after John and I went on a Bowie internet deep dive I also came to the conclusion that his earlier stuff is preferable
Definitely prefer Bowie's early work.
This album showcases Bowie’s remarkable ability to adapt to modern sounds without losing his signature style. Released in 2013, it feels fresh and contemporary while still carrying the distinct quirks and charisma that define his music. It’s fascinating how effortlessly he blended into the musical landscape of the era and made it entirely his own. While I didn’t find it particularly groundbreaking compared to his earlier masterpieces, it’s still a solid, enjoyable album that proves Bowie never stopped evolving. Score: 3/5
This was an okay album, nothing too exciting, it was good as a background listen but a little bit too meh for a direct listen.
It’s Bowie. It’s good in spots. Not so good in others. It’s better than the album they derived the cover from.
Also a cat inspired by neu, though i hear the sex pistols, I don't hear heroes as much. Anyway I didn't know this album existed, and am surprised it was on the list. Seems kind of like a 'late return to form' sort of thing.
Some good stuff on here, just not his best
This was shocking at the time because Bowie managed to release an album, after years of silence, without anyone knowing he'd been recording - it came out of nowhere unannounced. Now it feels a bit like the precursor to Black Star - the timing of which was even more shocking with his death. It has a similar vibe of him looking back on his life and work but it is rather forgettable. Black Star seems more like a definitive statement now. "Where are we now?" and "The Stars (Are Out Tonight" are the stand outs.
Don’t feel this was his best…
It’s Bowie so it’s good. I love Bowie, and he has created so much amazing and powerful music, so he means a lot to me. There are some good songs on here, but it’s definitely not as strong or catchy as his prime work Favourite tracks: Love is Lost, Where are We Now?, Valentine’s Day (although that might be a little too bland) and You Will Set the World on Fire I never really got into this, even though it might be a spiritual follow up to Heroes judging by the cover art.
3.5
I’m pretty sure this is supposed to be great, but I was disappointed I didn’t know any songs. But it wasn’t bad.
Decent listen but nothing too outstanding. 3/5
Not as perfect as classic Bowie, but still good with some of the usual Bowie charm. I'd Rather Be High sounds like something that could have come out in the late 90s or early 2000s from The Verve or similar bands. The backing vocals on How Does the Grass Grow remind me of some other band/song but I can't think of what though.
I like this and it FEELS significant. But hearing it back, removed from the drama at the time of release of it being the first Bowie album in howevermany years, I didn't find the songs that alluring. Where Are We Now? is gorgeous and poignant, but a lot of the rest didn't really grab me. maybe it needs more attention than I had time for while working. The cover is one of the greatest album covers ever made, though, so an extra star for that.
Well, I did not personally enjoy this all that much, but I imagine most people who like Bowie liked this album. It has an interesting sound: it's still very much a Bowie album with an 80's vibe, but it somehow sounds more contemporary. This is one of those "it's good for what it is but it's not for me" deals...with *just* enough personal appeal to get to a 3. 2.5
It's hard to describe how I feel about this one. It reminds me of Blackstar, with a different sound but similarly dour tone, and it has a couple really strong songs that stand up with Bowie's classics. But the whole thing just sort of drags, and the album cover really sets an accurate tone; an old, ragged, dismissive, and derivative take on Bowie's peak years in the 70s. Today is another day, and where are we now? Just as in the song, he sounds tired and unsure of the answer. Best song: The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
Bits of it were good
Not songs I had heard before sound good
Good album but none of the songs are memorable.
3.5
Fairly dull. Great Bowie voice though.
He is so creative and it’s great… Just again he’s not really my style
I love David Bowie. I do not understand in what world I “must” listen to this David Bowie album. Doesn’t break any new ground for me. An old rockstar’s comeback, no matter how revered, is not really nice that impressive. McCartney could put out a single that is just farts and have people analyze it while it goes to #1, but it doesn’t mean that it’ll be good. Not that this is bad, per se, it just sounds very much like other late Bowie stuff. Which, if nothing else, is pleasant enough.
It was fine. Not a big bowie fan but this was grand
Solid if uninspiring.
Meh. Manhattanite critics always rated Bowie higher than I do. I liked this one better than much of his work I've heard. 3 stars. :)
I'm surprised that this album is on the list considering his other more prominent works.
whatever
It's a pretty good album, but I am definitely glad it wasn't his last album. It's an alright sort of return to form, sounds like it could have been recorded in the late 80s. It's not his best stuff but you can tell he is trying his hardest to make a diverse album with good songwriting. B
good and it surprised me. Though I downgraded from 4 to 3.5 stars on more listens. A sort of melting pot of all the genres that Bowie did during his career.
Bowie's big comeback after retiring from music in the mid-00's is a good, but not great, set of songs. In hindsight it feels more like Bowie is dipping his feet back into the creative pool, but it did feel like a major event back in 2013. I actually remember the day this album was announced, together with the release of lead single "Where Are We Now?". It was Bowie's birthday, sure, but it was also the same day Pokémon X & Pokémon Y were announced. Completely unrelated, but that always stuck with me. Still, it's a very safe record, more of a reminder to the public how amazing Bowie had been throughout the years, and there wasn't much of an indication of how amazing he would be still be. Key tracks: The Next Day The Stars (Are Out Tonight) Where Are We Now?
That’s a 3.5 if ever there was one. Strong creative work for a sexagenarian, but lacking killer tracks.
The beginning of a strange little comeback towards the end of his life. This album shows interesting diversity for Bowie. His last two albums are somehow simultaneously odd and right at home in his trajectory. More experimental in its sound but still more interesting than 90% of what’s out there. Still, I own a lot of Bowie albums. And I don’t own this one. 3.5/5
The Next Day is the twenty-fifth album of David Bowie's incredible career. This album was his first in ten years, and was released as a surprise - he managed to keep the project entirely under wraps until it's release. This was the penultimate album of Bowie's career, and gathered considerable attention as a favorably-received release so late in his career and after a considerable absence. This is a collection of interesting art-rock songs - good, but not particularly great ones. They are grandiose, well-orchestrated and pretty songs, but this is not one of the albums to recommend from Bowie's extensive catalog.
The Next Day is the comeback album of the decade! (Maybe the heart attack got him rethinking). No hits here, but listenable Bowie. I’d Rather Be High and Boss Of Me string a decent two in a row. The last two songs are the dramatic Bowie and a bit much, album would have been better without ‘em. (2.8*s) for Davy.
Not my favorite but wild lyrics and some amazing music. Definitely listen again.
Not that it matters but a fairly woeful idea for a cover in my opinion. In any case, let's be real, if this wasn't David Bowie this wouldn't be on this list. Enjoyable in parts both not something I would return to 3*
Above average on the Bowie ridiculous to sublime scale. 3.5
I love David Bowie! This one didn't immediately grab me like others. Some of the bass lines were pretty cool though. I'm pretty sure I heard the drum intro to "Five Years" toward the end, perhaps a little nod to his Ziggy Stardust era. ;o)
Really enjoyable
"Surprisingly good" is what'd I say if Blackstar didn't literally come out after this but this does surprisingly sound very close to his earlier materials - I guess the Blackstar voice was more affected than premused. Similarity with his early material is not a guarantee of success or resonance with me but in this case I enjoyed the album as a whole, even if there weren't too many standouts.
forgot to rate when i listened so no deep thinks but i enjoyed it
Eh. Not bad but not really worthy of inclusion here except as a study of how once great artists age
Interesting catalog choice. Bowie can be a little quirky but this is a nice record
A lot of tempo switching. Funky but also slower at times. I mean It's Bowie. It lacks the charm of the earlier records though. Highlights: The Next Day The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
Unremarkable. Beste nummer: The next day (beetje talking heads vibes). +1 voor Bowie
Not my favorite Bowie. To melodramatic
Good. 3/5
Decent! “If You Can See Me” has a really cool riff. Cover looks a bit familiar though…..
Mostly enjoyed this but Bowie isn't really sparking much in me these days
I remember being really disappointed by this when it came out, but i can enjoy it now for exactly what it is ... very solid late bowie album! Crazy to think that in three years he would make his opus and best album... we had no idea what we had in store when The Next Day came out!
Another perfectly fine Bowie album. I think this is the eighth Bowie album we have listened to so far. I feel like I need to give his albums 3-4 listens over. So far there just isn't anything about Bowie's music that really resonates with me. Maybe that'll be a project for after this project.
Enough David Bowie already. Two days in a row; my 6th in less than a year. Jesus Christ. I get it was the surprise album of the century but musically it's just standard Bowie to me.
5.5/10
Love Bowie but this is just a meh late career project, like you wouldn’t even think of putting queens innuendo or the Beatles let it be on the list just because they’re late career albums of important artists. Why is that? Because just like this album they’re GOOD albums but not at all must listens. This album is honestly worse than them as it doesn’t really have any ‘peaks’ it’s just one load of noise with Bowie singing over it. Yeah when it was added to the list blackstar wasn’t out but that doesn’t matter blackstar is just a much better more deserving album. 3/5
The surprise comeback album. 'Where Are We Now' was the first release and caused a stir, it still sounds beautiful. 'Dirty Boys' and 'I'd Rather Be High' are cool. Some good lyrics but overall there's not much spark or originality. He had one far better album to come.
Didn’t know Bowie could rock out like this. 🪨 🤘 Felt like it wasn’t memorable enough for a 4, but much enjoyed.
Honestly, I’ve never seen the immense hype around Bowie. It’s undoubtable he has talent, but to me I don’t see him to the levels others believe he is at. I was hoping to be swayed by this but I was kind of bored.
8 Bowie. This is our 8th David Bowie album on the list. Thus far. I don't need to go 8 albums deep by anyone on a cross-section list and that *might* even include The Beatles. I've got 100 to go, odds are that there will be *another* Bowie album. ... Do you want me putting Rush's "A Farewell to Kings" on here? My 1001 list would have it (and at least 7 others from the band) but most people would probably (sadly) reject that and say for the love of John Rutsey stop this already and I truly understand that because that would be RIDICULOUS. I haven't even listened yet. Nice effort on the album cover, btw. Jeez was he dying by then and just wanted literally anything? Embarrassing. .... ok I'll listen but blahblah as I say with every Bowie...he's not my thing, I just don't like his voice, I'll never be a fan, can we just see other people and be cordial without meeting up like this every 2 months.... .... Ok - I listened and it's not bad. :D I debated deleting some of the above but I'm the only one who'll ever read this anyways. The music is decent and easy enough to steer away from Bowie's weird affectations as the worst of that Bowie was his blue-eyed soul efforts of the mid 70s which this is far-removed from. It's just not much of anything special, just a rock album, but a fair-to-decent enough record to put on without much pushback. So...meh? ok? Am I not trying hard enough? An hour later and I don't remember any of the songs. Next... 6/10 3 stars.
This is a good album, but I don't believe out of all the Bowie albums it was necessary to add to this list.
I like it better than some of the other David Bowie albums I've been given so far, so that's a plus.
So much Bowie on this list. Impressive late in life album, obviously not at top of his catalog but a high 3
Quality throughout, enjoyable listen. I don’t feel a strong urge to re-listen to this anytime soon since there are a dozen better Bowie albums though lol
A few classic Bowie moments but more by the numbers than a revolution.
A decent album but nothing outstanding so 3 stars or C.
At a minimum, a David Bowie album is interesting, at best it's mind-blowing. This is a bit difficult-to-place. It has all the elements of the beautiful and meaningful Black Star, but it's not the same. It's kind of a more celebratory version of it - a proto-attempt if you will, before the actual masterpiece. It's important, but it's not Black Star.
liked songs: Dirty Boys, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), If You Can See Me Not all of the songs are Bowie's best, but it's overall a good album. I think I still prefer Blackstar in terms of newer Bowie. 3.25-3.5 ish
Probably needs more listens but doesn't immediately grab me like most of his work. Definitively him, however.
some nice melodies
wel oke
Not the best
This is my third David Bowie album On this list. Here we go. My wife owns it on vinyl so maybe it’ll sound really good. Standout tracks The Stars (Are Out Tonight) Where Are We Now? Valentines Day If You Can See Me You Feel So Lonely You Could Die This was pretty decent. Falls in range of just Below a 4. Sorry Bowie I’m liking you a bit more with each listen but you just don’t have that LOVE FACTOR yet. Think Hunky Dory will be hard to beat. This is pretty decent for a late album by an artist 3.5/5
umm... It's Bowie, but I didn't enjoy this album that much.
It’s interesting in its approach to art rock, but that’s just not enough. As much as it pains me to say this about any Bowie work, it just doesn’t measure up.
Some decent songs but none that really stood out. A solid album as a whole though. Probably won’t listen to it much again though. Always going to be hard for an album like this to stand out against all Bowie’s previous works.
October 9, 2024 HL: "Love is Lost", "If You Can See Me", "Heat", “The Stars” ‘How does the grass grow? / Blood, blood, blood” Not my favourite Bowie, but being a Bowie fan to begin with I didn’t exactly waste an hour. There’s enough musical zaniness to compete with the overall darkness of the record.
Honestly left me desiring more; overall sounded like an artist that's been over the hill and decided to release new music. Not terrible, but nothing spectacular, either. 5/10.
High energy dance music with that Bowie voice.
Big fan of peak Bowie, but have never given this one a listen before. Not sure why as it is good, that man clearly knows how to write a song and has an amazing voice. Could do without the saxophone though.
There is some good stuff on this album but I wouldn’t call it a classic Bowie album and certainly not one I needed to listen to before I popped my clogs.
This came on the list weirdly close to "Heroes" in terms of showing up on the list (just a few days apart). Definitely not close to his classic records but a solid later era Bowie record for sure. I remember catching his live performance of one of the tracks at the Grammy's and being surprised how much I liked it. Feels like Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" where I want to hate it more than I actually do because it's not as classic or experimental but it is a legend just rocking to some decent tunes.
not digging first song sort of liking the music of the 2nd, not so much the singing/lyrics starting to think outside of the big hits, that i do not like bowie i would skip the songs ive heard so far if not for the overall purpose of this album listening again, i like the music for the most part, but not the vocals ok, valentine's day aint bad, highlight so far boss of me aint bad end of grass grow rocks out but you got to suffer to get there rocket man outro is has a pretty cool guitar sound certain melodies in So She resonate with me, but not as a whole
Good, but not my favorite
This one had a lot going on which seems typical for a Bowie album. It's interesting how Bowie is sort of like a shape shifter while at the time still being himself. His voice and singing just seem to work with so many different styles of music. The standouts on this one for me were 'If You Can See Me' and 'Valentine's Day '.
Great album. Love David Bowie.
3/5
I often like the idea of Bowie more than I like his music, but enjoyed this album.
It is fine, definitely not his best work.
It was alright
This came out in 2013. Bowie could’ve just rested on his laurels at this point but he never stopped. While this isn’t my favorite album it’s not bad. I would not have expected Bowie at this point in his career to still be making unique and interesting music. It truly is a testament to his talent. By 40 plus years into a music career most bands/musicians aren’t putting out anything noteworthy. Usually it’s just some half-assed rehashed bullshit. So kudos to Bowie for never settling down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3eob4orIrA
Amazing mindfuck of an album title and cover art. The music is actually pretty good ("actually" because it came out a good 30-40 years after the next oldest Bowie record I own and most pop musicians seem to run out of ideas long before then) but you have to be a lot more patient than most attention spans permit.Emotionally, I would say it traces similar ground as previous Bowie, with a paranoid tension overlaid across the top. I love the video for The Stars Are Out Tonight and who can't relate to I'd Rather Be High?!?
I'd never heard this before and was happy that it didn't suck. It's Bowie at his most innocuous.
I have listened to a lot of Bowie from the 1001 algorithm, and I was reluctant to listen to this one. Bowie is an amazing artist, but his albums are very hit and miss for me. I expected this to be a miss, but there are a few surprises here. Definitely a late career surprise. Fans will be pleased, but I am not sure there is enough here to be on this list.
Not really a fan of this. A couple nice songs, everything else kind of blurred together.
This was a cool album. It was fun. It was very Bowie. I really respect and love how he would just make whatever kind of music he was interested in. It was always Bowie. Its weird, but its poppy, but its also kind of progressive. Its brilliant. I'm not sure if its my favorite Bowie album. In fact, I'm not really even sure why its on this list. I did enjoy it though! The middle songs were what we really drew me in. "Where are We Now?" through "I'd Rather Be High" is kind of the high point of the record for me. I love the energy and flowing nature of these songs. Overall, it doesn't really grab my attention like other Bowie albums have. I listened to it through twice too.
Interesting and typical early Bowie.
Just because it’s David Bowie doesn’t make it automatically a “must listen”. He has numerous albums on this list. This one didn’t need to be here. It doesn’t add a thing to his other work.
I gave myself a full day to listen to this and im overall happy to say I dove in (b/c im admittedly not super Bowie experienced), but im not won over by this late, secret project The Bad: This felt too artsy fartsy (soundtrack/opera) and not enough rock n roll for me. It goes way further than I expected into the dark and poetry side of Bowie. Its missing that mystery element that other albums have - songs where I feel transported to a new universe. The good: * the instrument choices were awesome - all over the place and surprises on every song * range of songs is pretty wide without losing the vibe of the album work * where are we now - so chill and beautiful * if you can see me - totally rocking, 80s sound * Id rather be high - my favorite track on the album 2.5 stars. And im torn on where exactly to round to. 2 seems harsh and 3 seems generous for my taste
Definitely an important album in the overall Bowie story, even if not musically the most interesting. Some nice songs on here - first few tracks stand out - love almost all instrumentals across the album.
I'm starting to wonder about my feelings towards Bowie. I just have not liked what I've heard so far. 2.5/5
I don't think I fully get Bowie. I always think he's just alright, not really sure about the massive hype. Never bad but never great. Another middle of the road Bowie album to add to the long list.
As much as I love David Bowie who had, by any metric, a brilliant career, I think he might be the most overrepresented artist on this list. This album is a perfec example (along with Young Americans) of a middle-of-the pack Bowie, that though enjoyable does not belong. A couple of memorabe songs but mostly a forggettable song list. 3 stars
Decent, but far from the best Bowie album. Weird that its on this list, actually. 3/5
Kind of interesting. The guy can barely sing at this point, but he still put together some neat songs that work around his limitations while letting the good parts shine. It's got a very trebly jangle-pop sound, which is pretty different from his 70s output (I don't know if that's what he spent the 40 years in between working on). And it's got very nice production and a couple of cool flourishes. It's a little drony at times, tends to hang on a chord for a while on many songs, and while it's got more energy than you might expect from a 70-year-old, it's still a a little low-energy.
He's still making music? -Yes-
Nothing special, but not bad either. Just more Bowie innit
Bowie's later stuff was either a real hit or a real miss for this listener. The Next Day is one of those rare albums that fell somewhere in between.
7/10 I’ve been up and down on the Bowie albums I’ve heard, this late effort finds him in a good place and at ease, I think. Just straight up art rock, well produced and played, with a few nods to the Bowie of old. Nobody dared tell him to cut 2-3 songs, but they should have Best: Where Are We Now?
Not bad, but hardly a "must hear" Bowie album.
This is much better than the albums that most late-career greats have put out. Really, though, on its own, it's fine. Nothing stands out and I'm not finding anything worth going back to. Listening to this at work and nothing pulled me out of my routine to find out what was going on with the music. In fact, most of it passed me by with no notes. The closing track is dark and moody as fuck though and I'd probably listen to a whole album of that. 2.5/5
Not really anything noteworthy about this release. A couple of bad songs, the rest are okay. As middle of the road as you can get. 5/10
It doesn't need to be chart-topping music to make you want to vibe along. Bowie is a master at his craft and musically talented beyond what should be capable. But this kinda misses - maybe it's age catching up, or maybe I'm just too spoiled with all his earlier work.
3 stars because it's David Bowie
This one took me a few listens but it began to grow on me. As a die hard 70s & 80s Bowie fan, his later albums never resonated with me at the time of release, so I’m glad I’m getting a chance to listen to a few on this project. Second half of the album stands out to be over the first half. 3.5
Good stuff
Maybe would resonate with me more if I was also close to death and contemplating my very existence but unfortunately I have many years ahead of me so it was just kind of alright
A fine album, though I don’t think it’s going to leave any lasting impression on me.
Subdued
Not the best Bowie album
Some tracks (like You Can See Me) edged past refreshingly experimental to excessively avant garde. I'm impressed Bowie was still pushing his limits later in his career, and there are still some bops here. Intriguing, but probably not something I'd revisit eagerly.
It's Bowie but it's not the best Bowie.
Interesting album that will require another listen to see if I like it. 3/5 for now!
When you’re so famous for many original sounds, additional albums can be difficult. Is this the best Bowie? No. Is this good for Bowie in 2013? Hell yeah. Easily 3.5, possibly 3.75. A few standouts, nothing revelatory, but not a total waste.
Pretty meh for a Bowie album.
Can't really say I'm a Bowie fan, and I'm definitely not a late-Bowie fan.
Better than we remember when it came out. But still one of his weaker showings. Dirty boys is still shite. Not Bowie at his best
Compared to the previous album of Bowie I heard, this one was a little too experimental for me.
A Bowie fan. Had not listened to this. Felt like he was working to stay relevant.
Good artistry.
I think Bowie is fine, his music just doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. Due to how much everyone priases him I go in open-minded, but my 3 experiences at this point have fluctuated a lot in how I enjoyed them.
The Next Day has some really good moments but obviously isn't a patch on the best Bowie work, which I've often said I wasn't a huge fan of in terms of style, but I recognise the skill. There's obviously a sentimental value to this after his heart attack and the comeback matters, The Stars (Are Out Tonight) is a magnificent song, there's the unmistakable Bowie passion and yearning coursing through it but it lacks his edge or flair, so it's really only a 3. There's a ton of his work on this list and certainly not all of them are must-listens; including this does the others a disservice.
Yeah, not the best Bowie album we've had, by a long chalk, and Blackstar is far superior if we want to include his later work. The Stars and Valentine's Day are great songs (that middle portion of the album is pretty good), but it really fades away after about track 8 (which is just past way). Don't think that we needed this on the list, but it's not my least favourite Bowie album thus far. 3/5.
Didn't love it - Didn't hate it.
It’s fine. His voice just doesn’t do anything for me.
There are some great moments I really enjoyed but Bowie also likes to experiment and while I applaud his efforts, I don’t always like actually listening to them. When it’s good, it’s really good, but when it’s not, it’s pretty forgettable.
It's a cool album, definitely a highlight from Bowie's later career. However, it's not as good as Blackstar, nor does it rise to the heights of his earlier career from the 70s and 80s. It's an issue that Bowie's lesser albums suffer from comparison with his incredible body of work, but I don't know how else to rate this except by comparing it to his other works 3/5
Not Bowie's best.
Feels like a generic rock album spiced up by the fact that it is signature Bowie and his sound comes through. When I got to Boss of me, I started to vibe and think I could really get into it, but then dancing in outer space came on and it reminded me of everything I didnt like about Bowie and how dated some of it sounded. Completely solid but perfectly middling among this list.
I think I've always appreciated David Bowie more as a person and public figure than as an artist. This album doesn't really change that. The biggest compliment I can give it is that he is true to himself and the songs are distinctly Bowie. Unfortunately, his style never really appealed to me. He's the rock and glam version of a folky singer/songwriter that I don't care for most of the time. I'm surprised that this album appeared on here given his lengthy discography - is this really one of his top 5 ones? I'm sure we'll get more but this is pretty forgettable. It's not a bad album, I just immediately forgot each song after it played. I know they vary in tempo, key, etc, but they could all be the same, I wouldn't remember. I'd Rather Be High too, David.
This was fine? Some good songs but overall not very impressive
I love Bowie immensely but even I'd have to say that he didn't find that "snap" with this one that made a lot of his previous work legendary. There isn't anything too special here.
Sad to think he knew he was dying when he recorded it
Gear: Moondrop Variations Artwork: ⬜+ Mix: ⬜+ Musik: ⬜= Wertung: ⬜⬜⬜/5
I just don't see this as being influential or sonically impressive. There are much more interesting and impressive albums that could be on this list. Do I think it's impressive that Bowie was making music up until the end? Yeah, sure. I don't think this album can be cited as being seminal or groundbreaking. This album is fine. Enjoyable for sure. But why is this album on this list? I really should pick up the book that explains this stuff.
Couple of bangers (the stars and where are we now), rest is pretty good, couple of sucky sings, but david bowie has nothing to prove and hes got other way better albums
It was fine, but there are much better Bowie albums and there are much better albums from 2013. A lot of the entries in this list from the last 20 years really seem arbitrary. I think the authors don't really know music from this period.
I like Where Are We Now? I thought this album was fine, but not a must hear.
David Bowie always sounds good even without this being one of his classics
First album in recommendations for David Bowie, not one of his best works. But still a good album nonetheless. Favorite track: Valentines Day other picks: love is lost, set the world on fire
3/5
Probably my least favorite of his albums on this list. Really not spectacular.
This must have been Bowie's average era.
Just Another Bowie
It's no blackstar, but very respectable late career project 👍
Very mediocre. Kind of sad
David Bowie is awesome and I enjoyed this album quite a bit. I do prefer his older albums however. I will consider this a high 3/5.
I've heard more than enough David Bowie to come into this record knowing how great it would be. Definitely wouldn't consider it one of the best albums in his discog in my personal taste but he does have a lot to offer here. Even in 2013 he holds onto the very old school rock sound which is perfectly fine, in fact it works well. I didn't feel much of a pull from certain tracks here compared to what I get from albums like Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory. Still a strong LP nonetheless.
3+
Hmm…the story behind this album is interesting (and the cover’s cool), but it’s definitely not my favorite of Bowie’s work. No real standouts here.
I mean it’s Bowie, it’s definitely not quintessential Bowie and it’s really hard to see how this made it to the list.
Interesting, odd, decent, definitely the worst Bowie album I've had so far, and probably the worst one I've heard, but I've mostly just heard the good ones. Seems strange this would be his first album in 11 years and this was the result. There are interesting movements in the second half of the album, some nice chords in unexpected places. I think it's good, but i dont think its great, maybe a high 3 on there. Better to come
Just a little better than average
Fine album, other Bowie albums are better. Did have a bunch of good tracks like I'd rather be high.
It's 21st century Bowie, for better or for worse.
If You Can See Me through this review then you must be Dancing Out In Space. But Where Are We Now?
3/5. Like most david bowie albums, I don't get it immediately. This one was mostly straightforward. I enjoyed some of the songs, and the album overall was a cool collection of callbacks and unique lyrical ideas. The instrumentation is highlight, changing tempos and aesthetic back to back for each song. Is it a necessary listen, no, but it is fun. Best Song: Where Are We Now?, Love Is Lost, How Does The Grass Grow?
90/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Some nice bops. Good background music.
I don't even think Bowie would put this on top 1001 albums to hear before you die. It is fine, just really not great
2.5 - I really felt like Bowie's voice felt old in this. I think there were glimpses of Bowie being great musically, but for me it was quite mediocre and don't think it should be on the list just because it is bowie.
Just okay.
David Bowie reinvented for the 2010s
Good
I don't own this Bowie album, but its ok.
It's ok. A bit discordant for my tastes.
Classic David Bowie as in lyrically confusing but musically pleasing. I’d have to place this album with most of his other albums. Meaning, it’s not groundbreaking, it’s not hit after hit and I wouldn’t be a fan after listening to the whole thing. I guess I’m a greatest hits Bowie fan. His legendary status is what keeps me coming back for more. Choice Cut: The Stars
It's okay.
Nothing stands out on this album. It’s fine.
David Bowie's not someone who I normally listen to, so it's interesting to get involved in his discography. First impression: Not a huge fan of his voice. Still, I think that it works interestingly with the production. And the violins in Heat? Those are great. Lyrics feel like they flip flop between being bland and relatively interesting (if you can see me is cool lyrically). Overall, I'm not a fan of music from this era, but I find Bowie to have some simple but interesting music. Probably a solid 3+/5.
Big 3
Meh
Not my favorite of his.
A bit bland and stale throughout. Not my favorite Bowie record, but it’s still Bowie.
Love the album cover, but the album isn’t particularly good.
7/10 first few tracks were interesting, started waning a bit towards the end, but finished on a high note with Heat.
Pretty good
Bowie always does something interesting. More musical lives than a cat.
Decent. Worth a listen but not timeless or amazing like Wish you were here.
good but not my favourite from bowie
Its was groovy, few songs stood out but it all flowed well and I feel like I could happily listen to it again
Lidt irriterende, lidt god. Ikke hans bedste..
Mediocre.
A couple of interesting songs, but not the Bowie sound I was looking for.
Its okay. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Solid album but yet again Bowies songs don't really stick with me
Good album. Not a weak song throughout.
Even when I don’t love Bowie, I love Bowie.
I was scared to listen since this is a “past his prime” album but I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely worth a listen.
Ok I must admit this a little too much Bowie and this album wasn’t even that awesome sorry!
Album cover is such trash. Its fine! Too much bowie itll turn me into a hater
Not familiar with this album. Need to really listen with headphones.
I feel like you are the ultimate music dork if you like this album. I love David and his writing is very touching but i think the songs themselves arent that interesting. Trying to think of the latest bowie album i actually enjoy. Scary monsters and Lets dance are probably the latest. One day i'll get into blackstar.
Album is just okay, bordering on meh. It is not Bowie’s best and I do question the inclusion on this list. Nothing stood out to me as a favorite. 2.5 - I’ll round to 3 for the iconic voice
Always something interesting about Bowie. It is a bit challenging at times (If You Can See Me, Dancing Out in Space), but there's definitely enough here to warrant multiple listens. The Stars and Valentine's Day are really strong though most of the rest are interesting because they are Bowie, not because they have really good hooks. Enjoyed.
I love David Bowie's older stuff and this was perfectly fine but kind of dull. Sorry :-(
Thought I knew a lot of Bowie, but hadn’t heard any of these
3 odd choice for Bowie but I thought most the album was good. Nothing groundbreaking
It's Bowie, so obviously it comes with good tracks, but not a Bowie album I'd have picked to be a must listen.
More theatrical style of signing with lower range than some of his other albums. Cool
This was better then the previous one
Dk about this one. Big Bowie fan but admittedly didnt really follow him after Let's Dance. It is ok-no real standout tunes/ songs.
The invention that stands out in his work is there but not at previous levels. This is an uneven work but contains enough recognisable elements that permeate the songs to maintain an interest.
FINALLY, someone I respect and love! Oddly, I'm not deeply familiar with the songs on this Bowie album, not like I am with nearly every other album of his (which I would give 4-5 stars across the board), easily. I'm going to listen to this album several times today so I can give it a fair rating. Interesting how it doesn't feel exactly like a concept album for him. Songs feel sort of disjointed.
pretty solid overall, i enjoyed it
Nice Album! Great to listen even (at least) for the instrumentals in my point of view! Bowie creates a honestly driving Atmosphere with his voice on these intense some tranquillizing instrumentals full of variety.
I don’t know how to feel about this one. Love classic Bowie, but never really paid much attention to his post-2000 work for some reason? I suspect this album is gonna grow on me as I continue to listen, but after just one day I’m not fully convinced it deserves a place on this list as opposed to other artist that got left out.
3.4 - "Blackstar" is Bowie's definitive late-career statement, and a testament to a towering and chameleonic talent who left this world with his considerable gifts still in his grasp. In every way that record outshines "The Next Day", a good though lukewarm entry in Bowie's catalog. Standouts: "Boss of Me", "Heat."
Live Is Lost Boss of me Dirty Boys
Great album and (unfortunately short-lived) return to the scene, but not without a couple of duds towards the end (Boss of me, Dancing out in space),
This is a throwback to a more lush Bowie sound from the 70s. I feel like this is a lot more lyrically dependent listening, and includes a lot of guitar textures that just feel so.....old? Its a sound that feels both modern and dated. but that could just be where my ears are right now.
There are better Bowie records
Fun listen, I hadn’t heard of this Bowie album before. It helps that it was 65 in February in Pittsburgh and I could listen with the windows down
Probably a 2.5. Wouldn’t seek out before other Bowie albums but I did enjoy it and would enjoy it on an artist radio shuffle. Rounding up because I like the artist
Not necessarily one I'm going to reach for again anytime soon.
better than the first bowie album but i just don’t like his voice oops
Creditable Bowie
Bowie, rather uninspiring. Some good melodies but singing and Songwriting doesn't do that much. 6
Nice. Amazing conclusion to a creative career of art and sound.
good
There were some good tracks here and there, but it was mostly just generic sounding rock music. I love ya Bowie, but this didn’t really hit this time around. Heat is cool though.
not my favorite bowie, pretty good though.
Sure, I guess. Blackstar never came out this would be an interesting album. One final statement from a legendary artist to show he's still got it after all these years. But Blackstar did drop and it's significantly better than this. It's not a bad album. I was impressed at how relevant Bowie was to the 2013 sound. It was part of the conversation while still being uniquely Bowie. You're So Lonely You Could Die was also a standout track for me. Nothing else was particularly interesting though. Rise and Fall, Hunky Dory, and Heroes all blow this out of the water. This one is good. I'm glad I listened because Bowie is incredible but this one just isn't a classic.
B- The Next Day 3 Dirty Boys 3 The Stars (Are Out Tonight) 3 Love Is Lost 3 Where Are We Now? 3 Valentine’s Day 3 If You Can See Me 3 I’d Rather Be High 3 Boss Of Me 3 Dancing Out In Space 3 How Does The Grass Grow? 3 (You Will) Set The World On Fire 3 You Feel So Lonely You Could Die 4 Heat 3 These Bowie albums been lacking recently. I need a break.
I think bowie has better jewels than thos...it sound good, obviously, but it did not caught me a lot
It wasn’t that bad but it’s a single or two from being memorable. I doubt I’ll pick this album up again. This also should be nominated for laziest/worst album art ever.
David Bowies sound developed over the years and with his 25th Studio Album, The Next Day might not be immediately recognisable from his earlier more famous works. The sound was was still very much in the art rock style but with a more mature sound overall, with hints of the glam he is best known for. This is a really long album, and unfortunately I believe suffers a little for its length. Best: The Next Day Worst: Boss Of Me
