Reviews (page 8 of 11)
David Bowie has so many excellent albums that some great ones go somewhat forgotten. The Next Day was heavily eclipsed by Blackstar a few years later, and it can’t compete with Bowie’s 70s masterpieces, but it’s really his best between “Heroes” (1977) and Blackstar (2016). “The Stars Are Out Tonight”, “Where Are We Now?” and “Valentine’s Day” are some of Bowie’s best tracks, even considering all the great songs he released in decades prior.
Bowie is enjoyable and I love his whole vibe but I've come to find his albums I either REALLY love or they're just like... okay. I found this one to be the former. Enjoyable but just not super exciting.
It pains me to do this. Bowie is one of my favorite artists ever, but I’m just not feeling his later-in-life works. I wish this album wasn’t on the list.
Still wish I liked Bowie more 3
I have to say my appreciation for David Bowie has grown exponentially over the last couple years, especially the impact he has made on some of my favorite artist. I was a little bummed this wasn't the Heroes album, but all for the most part, this album was OK. Most of my reasons I liked this album is because I am a simp for Mindy. I thought the opening tune was pretty good with The Next Day, but then the rest of the songs I liked are because I thought of Min. I thought Where Ae We Now is a beautiful song just loved the lines, "As long as there's me. As long as there's you." Of course, we just had Valentine's Day so this song was appropriate for time for the time of my listen. And the cheesy, Boss of Me really hit home. I mean the lines, "Who's had ever dreamed that a small town girl like you would be the boss of me." Ain't nothing to be ashamed of when it's the truth. Overall, I can't say this was a great album, but I did enjoy my listens. Anytime you can make me think of my wife and put a smile on my face, well, I win. Other songs that stood out to this listener, I'd Rather Be Stoned, Set The World on Fire and Dirty Boys. Overall, thought the album was OK. Nothing great but overall decent album. Hope I don't offend Luke with a rating of a 3, but 3 it is...........
3.5 A pretty good album that’s largely overshadowed by Blackstar (understandably), so I’m pretty happy to see it get a shoutout on this list. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from the best or most iconic of Bowie’s work, but it’s a really solid collection of songs and a bit of a return to form after a really mediocre, forgettable stretch of albums from the late 90s through the 00s… and perhaps even a bit of foreshadowing into what the final chapter of his career (and lifetime) was to sound like. While there isn’t any one song here I would immediately jump to as being among his best, as a whole, I do think Bowie was probably at his most experimental and innovative with songwriting here since his Berlin trilogy days (which may have inspired the album cover, though I’ll come back to that later), and thematically, at an insightful and profound high. Like, three of my favorite songs here, The Next Day, I’d Rather Be High, and Valentine’s Day (which happens to be today, coincidentally), all seem pretty straightforward when you first listen to them, but when you dive further into the lyrics, they’re about religion, war, and school shootings, respectively (and then there’s Dancing Out in Space which I’m pretty sure is just about dancing out in space, but I give it a pass because it’s a fun song). I don’t really have a ton much else to say beyond that, but I will say, I do think this is an album that rewards you the more you put into it. While Blackstar may be a superior continuation of the sound and themes of this album (but in a more self-reflective manner), I do believe this album stands on its own and holds a special place in the Bowie catalog. Soooo, it’s such a shame it has to have such an abomination of an album cover. Like, I’m not sure if he was trying to draw a parallel or create a separation from that era of his career, but either way, do you really have to desecrate a classic to do so? And there’s a decent chance this inspired Green Day to do the same with their album Father of All… which almost makes it worse in retrospect (at least they made up for it a bit by giving proper homage with the lyric “Strange days are here to stay/Ever since Bowie died, it hasn't been the same” on their most recent release). Just ugh. This album deserved better.
This is the 9th David Bowie album on this list. This album is nearly as good as his other albums. It is certainly better than a lot of the other albums on this list. I didn't dislike it and would probably listen to it again but nothing really stood out.
Not my favorite
Good Bowie, but he's definitely done much better than this. Hard to say any one song really stands out against the rest of his catalog.
This was the second album from David Bowie I encountered here in this travel of the 1001 albums THBYD. I loved the first one, Blackstar. This one is also ok, but at least from a couple of listenings for me "only" a good rock album.
I deeply admire David Bowie. Doesn't the whole coterie of self-referential culture condors converge on the same corpse? This record is just mid... in contrast to the rest of his other flourishing genius. Not to get contentious, but does this project want to acknowledge that Mr. Bowie is phenomenal and include 20 of his records? Shouldn't the impetus be to introduce us dullards to 1001 separate interesting and insightful artists instead of clogging the accolades with multitudinous redundant record rehashes? Like I said before, Mr. Bowie is incalculable in imagination, so leave some room on this list for creative derivation. If anyone could do anything with it. And leave some room for my actual favorites Let's Dance, Outside, Heathen. ★
I know Bowie has some great songs, and I enjoy a lot of his works, but this album just feels average. Nothing really stands out.
A few solid tunes, but it is long and the weirder stuff doesn’t work for me. The last song is so bad it leaves you on a sour note and makes it hard to accurately judge the album.
Not my favorite Bowie album. For me, the context around the release of this album speaks louder than the quality of the music itself - first release in 10 years, coming off of a health scare, and the secret recording of the album all create some bonus interest in the album. It's still a decent album worth your time, but if you had 3 Bowie albums to listen to, I wouldn't include this on that list.
Impressive late-career effort. 3/5
I was mad for it at the time, but that was in hindsight that I was so glad to have Bowie back that I didn't think much about the fact it's a bit ploddy with occasional bursts of excellence. The final masterpiece was still to come I suppose.
Nothing special really but it's Bowie
Not as good as earlier albums.
Not my favorite of his, but his just too damn cool not to love.
Bowie på sine gamle dage, har utvivlsomt kvalitet, men kræver flere lyt
I remember listening to this album when it first came out. I was in high school and trying to keep up with new music releases for the first time. I don't remember it very well, even though I listened to it a few times. Maybe it fell victim to the free-version-of-Spotify disease where you could only listen to albums on shuffle. Anyways, my new take is that this album is pretty good, but it pales in comparison to Blackstar and, of course, Bowie's best work. It's a couple songs too long, and much of it has a straightforward rock sound with a bit of modern polish. But I can hear Bowie's passion here. Highlights: Dirty Boys, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), Love Is Lost, I'd Rather Be High, Dancing Out In Space, (You Will) Set The World On Fire
I hate to say it because Bowie is a groundbreaking legend but his later stuff generally leaves me cold. Nothing stands out on this. I want to give it a 2.5
Love David Bowie, but definitely not his best
Some songs were pretty good, but overall a little bland.
Helt okej, inget jättebra. Ibland sprattlar det till lite men mest meh.
Hard to write anything bad about a Bowie album. Stylish sobbing, throbbing voice.
oh i guess his voice sounds pretty old now, which i kind of wish i could ignore or not care about its fine, like i kinda dont feel anything i have no fkn idea what hes talking about most of the time, and the lyrics can be kinda repetitive
Always creative. No hits but still an interesting Bowie compilation.
A somber reminder of the pain that David went through during his health scares. Blackstat,I believe is the acceptance of his fate but The Next Day is the struggle accepting his own mortality. Tones of reflection and death, you can't help but think of what a traumatic time Bowie was going through
3.5 another David Bowie album. It isn’t Ziggy Stardust.
it was ok.
Is okay, Bowie kickt mich nicht wirklich.
Buen álbum, no es mi estilo pero tiene coherencia como obra.
Honestly don’t think this album would be anywhere near as popular if he hadn’t died as soon as it came out.
Very nice album
So let's divide this into pros and cons. Pros: This is undeniably David Bowie. Has his distinct take on rock through and through, and it's produced very well. The instruments are really well done. Very good production value to the entire album, and it's worth a listen because of that fact. Cons: David was very much past his prime for this album. The vocals leave much to be desired. And as that was a great strength for David in his earlier years, that's a really sad miss on this album. It also means it just doesn't compare to his earlier work.
This was a lot of fun, clearly a Bowie album but felt less like a lot of what I'd already heard.
Classic Bowie album. Didnt love it, didnt hate it.
Initially felt like this might be a 4-star, but it slips to 3-star territory by the end. Understand how it might have some historic importance for Bowie fans, but he has better albums.
So many other, better Bowie albums. I had to listen to them to be sure I wasn't mis-remembering his insane, genre-breaking talent. This just felt like so much mid-2000s rock.
Not a Bowie fan but it was alright!
When I first saw this album I was a bit cynical that a lot of the albums on this albums released in the last 10 years are by older artists. I still think this is true and it makes me slightly sad that they skipped so much new and interesting music it's not like no younger people makes good music any more. With that said this was surprisingly good. Is it one of Bowie's best albums? No. But still decent and different enough to be interesting.
Decent entry to the 1001 by Bowie. 3.5 stars.
Title track comes out swinging. Dirty Boys a stomping dirge that works because of the bari sax. The drums on If You Can See Me sound like a workout. Valentine's day probably my least favorite. That sax again on Boss of Me doesn't quite resuscitate the track. Even the worst songs here have something of interest, whether production, Bowie's delivery, or instrumentation, but suffers from being too long and not cutting some clunkers.
Not my favourite, but good quality Bowie.
Obviously not peak Bowie, but still pretty good stuff.
Thoughts before listening: Later era David Bowie album released not long before his death...although it's not his last album since Blackstar was released as he was dying. I don't remember there being a lot of excitement around this album, but there must have been some for it to make the list. I love most of the music Bowie put out so I'm sure I will enjoy this as well. Review: Well this is pretty good. Definitely better than a lot of the 00s and 10s albums that have obviously been added because the editors felt a need to include modern albums. That can mostly be attributed to the fact that this is very much a David Bowie album. While this is not on the level of his 70s heyday, this is still full of well written and interesting songs that certainly are better than a lot of his 80s and 90s output. I give this a solid 3 star rating knowing that the classic Bowie albums will be 4s and 5s when they eventually show up on this list.
Not his best, not his worst. Probably felt a lot more relevant when it was his latest. Some good tracks on here though, to be sure
Nice album! Behövs nog inte med på listan thouu
Actually enjoyed this more than the Hunky Dory album, despite not knowing any of the songs. Not enough for it to get more than 3 stars though.
Nothing really jumped out at me. If you're a Bowie fan it's good, but otherwise there's no need to rush out and listen to this when Black Star does it so much better.
This is a decent album, not sure why it is on the list. Early and mid-career Bowie was iconic and generation-defining stuff. This is good music, but doesn't feel that relevant to me. It is just Bowie.
CD
Okay, feel this is more on here just because it is Bowie rather than being something special.
Good album, that I feel would be great if I had followed Bowie's career closer over the years. Can't wait to hear this after going throught he rest of his discography.
I think this would have had a bigger impact on me had I experienced it contemporaneously. Not the best Bowie I’ve experienced on this project but props for how this album was born into the world. Glad I listened to it.
Bowie's penultimate album and return after a heart attack in 2004 continues to show his growth. Always on the forefront of art rock, Bowie makes an album here that still sounds new and weird. Though there are moments that sound commercially viable, others are clearly more experimental and made for their own sake. Having said that, this is not Bowie's best nor it is his most groundbreaking. It is still excellent and ahead of many rock artists from 2013.
Didnt necessary make me want to relisten but I liked it and similar to my taste. 3+
to me, 2nd tier Bowie. Overall, good, but didn't like it as well as his other stuff.
Not David Bowie’s most innovated album but still a solid album. The song “Where Are We Now?” gave me chills.
No strong feelings about this album either way.
A decent album, not one of Bowie's best though, in my opinion.
This was fine, the title track was great and I really enjoyed I’d Rather be High. With all the great Bowie albums, I’m not sure this one really needed to be included but it was and I listened and it was fine. 3 stars
this album was alright. it reminds me a lot of the general quality and sound of a lot of this era of musician making music in the modern era, to me it is fairly akin to what Paul McCartney has been doing lately. not so much at the forefront and pushing the limits of culture, but comfortably finding his own niche. as compared to his classic work, i don't think this holds a candle to it, but in its own right, it's pretty solid.
i can appreciate the fact that davie was still making good music past his prime but idk it’s nothing particularly crazy
not his best album
Love Bowie. Have listened to this before and am aware of the massive foreshadowing that makes it. But I didn't gave the space to properly digest this.
It's ok. I liked the track I'd weather be high otherwise, typical bowie
Still not a huge fan of Bowie's music. Good enough stuff on here, and the story of the album is entertaining.
Overrated
I appreciate that he's a legend and had enormous talent, I personally don't find this album terribly interesting. The musicianship is on point and it's very well produced, but it's just not my cup of tea. The songs seem to run together lacking any sort of identity.
hm iskreno unimpressed
Par mi se bas sviđaju a neke su mi skroz bezveze tak da ne znam. Radije bi slusao neke druge njegove albume
This is my third David Bowie album in five days. I am not complaining but it does give me a good perspective on each album's merits. "Blackstar" deserves to be in this album over "The Next Day." This is not by any means a bad album, yet this does not need to be in this book. This is the most straightforward "rock" album I have heard from Bowie and is also an album that lacks his usual efforts to be inventive and to elevate what he is able to do in terms of songwriting. I still enjoy going through Bowie's album collection, though again, I wouldn't mind taking a bit of a break from his albums. We shall see.
Found it hard to hear the vocals at time but otherwise pretty good
2023 Thanksgiving Catchup - This sounds like something Bowie would put out. It's okay. it doesn't blow my mind but it's not inconsistent. The front half is more exciting than the back half. It sounds like he ran outta energy there... Best Track: The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
Like, it’s one of the last bits of Bowie we got on this plane of existence, right, so there’s that, but unlike Blackstar, I don’t think that I would’ve liked it as much had it NOT been Bowie.
nothing standout. some familiar and nice sounds but an easily fogetable experience
Not the best Bowie album that I've heard but entertaining.
не запомнилось, но и не взбесило, что значит успех)
Dece
3/5 not quite there
I think there are far too many Bowie albums on this list. This could have easily been cut for another artist. However, having said that I did like this but I'd struggle to say much more about why. Highlights: Where Are We Now? Valentine's Day Dancing Out In Space (You Will) Set The World On Fire
I wasn't convinced by this at the start, but it did grow on me. His 25th studio album! Pretty crazy. I think it's a long way, both in time and quality from peak Bowie, but I did enjoy it. I think I preferred this to blackstar, but it's not as good as his peak albums. 3.5 seems fair. Highlights: Where are we now Valentine's Day I'd rather be high
It's not bad, but not a go-to for me.
Hyvä! En oo aiemmin kuunnellu.
David Bowie/5
way more likeable for me, than the early David Bowie
Never heard this before and maybe never even any of these songs. He's a legend but I can't really tell why from this album.
Not to start wars but I don’t understand the David Bowie hype
Wow back to back Bowie albums. This was not as good as Hunky Dory, still consistent but did not have as many standout tracks.
Rating: 3.4
Enjoyable, mixes his 70's weird style of music with 2000's contemporary sounds.
meh. I wish you could rate these on a decimal system, all of these 'listenable' but wouldn't listen to again or purchase albums are getting kind of tiresome and rating them a 3 seems too high and too low at the same time.
Not terrible.
Yeah Alright
ok
As a big Bowie fan I've alway feared his album would suck and so never listened to it. After listening to it it's.. Actually good? His voice is still amazing and some songs (like where are we now) could definitely get in my top 10!
Not my favorite Bowie album, but he certainly still had it at this point. Very interesting hearing a contemporized version of himself.
As a huge Bowie fan, it pains me to say that this album just doesn’t do it for me. Bowie has always been able to straddle this fine line between art rock and pop, light and dark, dance music and reflective music. This album is just too much the latter for me and I don’t think Bowie’s vocals are up to the challenge anymore! Of course I can’t be too harsh to the man who legit inspired my sexual awakening may he rest in peace. There are a couple treasures on this album, such as Dirty Boys, Where Are We Now and (You Will) Set the World on Fire.
Nothing to write home about. There were some great grooves, but I've never found Bowie's vocals that appealing.
Fine album, overall uninspiring, no real standout tracks
I'm as much a fan of Bowie as everyone else, yet I feel Dimery's list missed albums in his discography that are far more striking than this one. *The Man Who Sold The World* immediately comes to mind here, but I'm sure there's a couple of other LPs missing in the 1001 Albums book--even if the "classic" ones, such as *Ziggy Stardust*, *Low* or *blackstar*, are obviously there. About this peniltumate album, it's a very nice throwback to a lot of different phases of Bowie's legendary career. It's just that *truly* memorable moments in it are scant. Besides, the real genius of Bowie never resided in him looking back, but in him looking towards the future so as to craft genuinely groundbreaking art. And this is exactly what he did with *blackstar*, right after this one. The fact that David left us a few days after the release of that incredible record--so leftfield and uncompromising, and yet so moving at the same time--is the ultimate piece of evidence he will never be forgotten. But I guess that's a story for another time, kiddies. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 3). Number of albums left to review: 395 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 271 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 144 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 192 (including this one)
A good album but the mojo has gone and it left a while back.
I thought this was a decent album. Will listen again.
Really solid and enjoyable Bowie album. Class production, easy to listen to. Not my favourite style of pop music but I appreciate this one.
Sadly, not Bowie’s best.
The Next Day - 8.5/10 Dirty Boys - 8/10 The Stars - 8/10 Love is Lost - 7.5/10 Where are We Now - 7.5/10 Valentine’s Day - 8/10 If You Can See Me - 8/10 Id Eather Be High - 8/10 Boss of Me - 8/10 Dancing Out in Space - 8.5/10 How Does The Grass Grow - 8/10 Set the World on Fire - 8/10 You Feel so Lonely You Could Die -8/10 Heat - 7/10 TOTAL - 111/140
3,5
Bowie <3 ; where are we now blijft sterk, bowie niet per se op zijn krachtigst maar wel sterk emotioneel Valentine day is ook wel aight, 1e halft album sterker dan 2e helft, niet slecht tho maar niet perse special
The writers of this list LOVE their Bowie, and I don't blame them, so do I. There has been a total of 9 Bowie records on list, but agreeably, they've stricken this one from the official list. It's a great record, but 9 albums for 1 artist on here is a lot and this is my personal least favorite of them.
And the Next Day. And the Next Day. What’s the story of the cover art, were people confused when it released? Anyways it’s some middle of the road Bowie which is fine with me
As a devoted David Bowie fan, I couldn't help but feel that "The Next Day" was a bit too pop-centric for my tastes. While I appreciate his artistic evolution, this album didn't quite capture the experimental spirit that made Bowie so legendary.
A little cacophonous, I like Ziggy Stardust waaaay more
Individual tracks are amazing but seems a bit inconsistent and long
It was OK but I prefer his other albums
Highlights: The Stars, Love is Lost, Valentine’s Day, Boss of Me, Set the World on Fire, You feel so lonely you could die Mid: Where are we now, I’d rather be high, How does the grass grow, If you can see me, Dancing out in Space Lowlights: Heat, The Next Day, Dirty boys Old man Bowie voice doesn’t help, bad vocal mixing, some good old type songs, but mostly mid. Also bad tracks were BAD
Interesting music but very wordy that tells a story as opposed to just being harmonic
I thought this album was very conventional in Bowie standards. Non the less i think it was well executed. I didn't enjoy it. Maybe i just had a bad day...
not a big david bowie fan but it was alright
Aika tasapaksua. Levyllä ei ollut oikein huippuhetkiä muttei matalia hetkiäkään
me lastima pero i have yet to escuchar un disco de Bowie y quedar enloquecida. 7.5/10
Good album but not essential to belong on this list (He's got 7 peak albums on there plus Blackstar, which should be the represented late career album)
None of the classic Bowie songs, but still very listenable. It did fade a bit to background music at times though. Would consider listening again, but haven't added it to favourites.
Probably the first Bowie album I have listen to properly.
Bowie has some great stuff but I don’t think this needed to be on this list.
Top tracks for me are I'd Rather be High and Valentine. I have no particary strong emotions towards this album.
A good album, but I wouldn't rate it as one of Bowie's most iconic. The most noteworthy part about it is the cover, which is essentially the cover of "Heroes" with "Heroes" crossed out and a white square with "The Next Day" written on it stuck over Bowie's face.
I am not a Bowie fan sorry
C'est du Bowie donc ça va... mais loin d'être son meilleur.
-FINALLY i got some david bowie -not a huge fan but i love his voice -this is also his older stuff so i don’t know it as well -love is lost feels like a movie song -like it would play during an intense scene in a movie -i REALLY like you will set the world on fire -i’m going to rate this a 3 because its good and its david bowie (and theres some songs i really like) -but overall i don’t love this album and idk if i’d listen again
Its actually not that bad
It was decent.
Never a fan apart from odd bits - same here
Just ok. It was slow, bur interesting. I would listen again
Weirdly, this more recent album I enjoyed more so than some of his older ones. Nothing really stuck with me after, but I just noticed listening flew by and suddenly I was done. No skips. So that means this is that middle of the road 3.
I really love Bowie and this album had a number of good songs on it but it also didn't blow me away fully. I honestly need to give more newer Bowie records more listens, though I tend to gravitate towards his 60s, 70s and 80s period more often. I thought the production was solid and enjoyed the standout tracks mentioned below but this one didn't rise to the level that other Bowie albums do for me. Standout Tracks: The Next Day, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), Valentine's Day, Boss of Me, (You Will) Set the World on Fire, You Feel So Lonely You Could Die, Heat
Wasn’t keen initially but it grew on me. Good comeback album by a great artist but I’m not sure it deserves inclusion in this list. Not overly memorable.
Not my favorite Bowie but there were good moments in there.
Good stuff from Mr Bowie
Nice layering of textures and sounds and creative production. The sound is very full across the band - as the bass/keys/rhythm guitar form kind a driving mush that pulses along while the guitar leads work really well to propel the songs from verse to verse, experimenting with some interesting tones. It's very contemporary sounding. Bowie isn't retreading old sounds, but digested the alt rock and indie sounds of the 90s/00s (that he influenced) and comes out the other side to make an album that's very much in synch with rock of the 2010s. Some signature elements are there: his voice and melodic style, the interstellar lyrics, the squigly reverb-drenched guitar bursts, cheesy synths and noodly sax. It's never quite as anthemic his classics, but has some catchy hooks. In the end though, this is Mid-tempo rock with very tasteful production/arrangement, but clearly carried onto the list by being Bowie. Favorites: The Stars, Dancing Out in Space, You Feel so Lonely
Promedio 6/10
Not sure what he was going for with this one. Some interesting songs but mostly a boring alt rock album.
Thin Duke was solid. I did love the earlier stuff better but never a bad album all in all
Decent, playful record. Can't say any one song stuck out as impressive, but it was good enough to want to come back to.
obv not as good as a younger bowie but surprisingly energetic for his age

i like Bowie ok. This one's far less disappointing than the previous one.
I was surprised when this album popped up and I saw the Heroes album cover, just slightly different -- I had no idea that The Next Day's album cover was the Heroes album cover from nearly 40 years prior, just intentionally modified. Very "artsy", and seems like a typical Bowie move! Really, this is a good, enjoyable album. Like most Bowie stuff, at the time of release, there was nothing else on the charts that was really quite like this. So even in 2013, he was still unique and in a class of his own. However, holding this to a David Bowie standard, the album does feel a little safe and vanilla. All that said, with so much other Bowie stuff on this project that is superior (in my opinion), I'm not sure why this is on here. At the time that this came out, it was the best album that Bowie had released in many years. So perhaps, overall, this album's inclusion stands as an acknowledgment of a legendary artist's ability to fall and then rise again, all while maintaining a uniqueness about him that seems almost untouchable. This album definitely lands somewhere in the 3s for me, continuing Bowie's inability to learn less than a 3 from me!
This album is significant for David Bowie's career. The album music is okay rock. But I'm not sure about the vocals. It feels kinda toned down. It didn't click for me.
Bowie being Bowie - Schiet me niet dood dat ik geen giga-fan ben.
Not his best.
Its fiine but not gonna convince me about Bowie
i feel like this was a weird album to be on the list. it’s not bad my any means and i liked the baritone sax usage but who sees a list of 1000 important albums and thinks that the 2013 Bowie album deserves a spot?
Again, Bowie perhaps doesn’t quite hit home cleanly for me. His soundscape clashes a bit with my sensibilities. Most of the guitar sounds are not really my cup of tea, and I really think that the whole “let’s have a random saxophone play some solo in a rock song” was a bad trend. Some of the later songs on the album (e.g. set the world on fire) I thought were good.
Can see how this was seen as a return to form. Some of this album is experimental while retaining an earlier era Bowie charisma. However, a lot of it felt a bit desperate, as if Bowie was looking back rather than forward. Blackstar, in comparison, goes further and darker and is all the more powerful for it.
Shout out David Bowie, man - RIP. Favorite album is Let’s Dance. This album is pretty good tho, never peeped the newer stuff but its got some bangers for sure. Fave tracks 3,7,11,12,14. Solid.
Niet zijn beste werk, maar gelet op zijn leeftijd toen en zijn overleden niet lang erna toch nog steeds erg goed.
This is a mixed bag. It contains Bowie's trademark-weiredness, but the songs are mostly so-so, with one or two exceptions. 2.5/5
Not my favourite from good ol Jonesy I'm afraid. LOVE IS LOST is one of my favourite Bowie songs but there are some others on here that get on my nerves quite badly.
Not really my stuff
Hated it when it came out. It grew on me I guess?
Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this, I think it largely washed over me and had nothing that really defined it
Good Bowie album but not as good as his earlier works (and Blackstar). There's some songs that go back to his 70s style.
It was alright, not nearly as good as his other stuff ive heard off first listen
Feel similarly to Bowie as I do about Dylan - not my thing
Solid, but largely unimpressive. As a big fan of Bowie's career, I found this a solid step-up from some of his work from the late-90s/early-2000s, but nothing really stuck out form this, iunfortunately. Still a good set of songs (the uptempo groove of If You Can See Me is the major highlight for me) and clearly indicative of Bowie's musical prowess this late in his life, but I walked away from this a little underwhelmed.
It was alright. The album seemed like a darker version of Bowie's heroes, which was cool, but I thought a lot of the music was more or less just alright.
BL: Bowie is an icon, there’s no disputing that. I’ve never heard of this project mentioned alongside his other works though, so I’ll have to give it a listen and see what I think AL: a pretty solid record, but it didn’t really do anything that stood out to me. I liked the themes of immortalisation through art and him always feeling younger than he is because of this but overal the experience was nothing radical. FT: “the next day”, “dancing out in space”, “you feel so lonely you could die” 3/5
This was pretty darn good. Wayyy better than trash ass Heroes that the cover riffs off. Liked the two parenthetical songs - The Stars (Are Out Tonight) and (You Will) Set the World On Fire.
An average album for Bowie, not sure why it's included.
Well produced. Studio band were tight. Not a big enough Bowie fan to get the references to his earlier work but I didn’t mind this over all.
Fine even enjoyable but one awaits the reaching of the peak Bowie destination -- just way too much of it on this list. The artwork underscores the self-involvement /self-obsession and navel gazing, the reaching for relevance. So much of this is simply unconvincing for being outright synthetic and performative.
Not bad, but nothing special in my eyes.
I guess it's about time that I accept that I'll never be a big fan of David Bowie. I like some of his songs just fine and it's clear there's a lot of talent here. It just doesn't do anything for me.
Solid indierock from Bowie with some references to the classic Berlin albums.
Kind of a wild affair, even for David Bowie. I listened to this back to back a half dozen times over the weekend. It's impressive that he's still got a strong connection to lyric, this late in his career. I appreciate how improvised and experimental some of these records feel. And I love late career albums, that's something I've discovered from this list. Does it put it over the line for me? This might actually be one of my more favorite Bowie records we've heard on this list, other than the hits. I think it's a very special record, and I'm glad we got it. I'm gonna go with "Good Time Was Had," and I'll be returning. 3/5
A good listen but I much preferred Black Star
Not a bad album, just doesnt live up to the classics.
Yeah not my favorite. I always feel like there's something missing from the musicality/performance of Bowie's voice. It's like a weird British-fem-robot. The music is solid but it never captures me and makes me want to ride along at full speed.
This was a completely new album for me. Not bad, but quite unremarkable for Bowie's standards. Some stand-out tracks for me were Love Is Lost, Where Are We Now, and Set The World On Fire.
I like David Bowie, but I didn’t think this album provided anything super revelatory, and there are other albums of his out there that are far more notable. 3/5
Wasn't really into this one
David Bowie has a unique singing voice, but I find it very dull to listen to. Sometimes his music is enjoyable despite this and sometimes not. This is what we have here, a bit below average album for me. Best track: The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
The Next Day is the eighth album recommended to me from David Bowie on this list. ¿Who needs to listen to that much Bowie? I was not excited to see this album come up. Surprisingly, I didn't have as hard of a time listening to this album as I have the previous seven albums. The Next Day still falls squarely in "okay" (3 stars), but I was tapping my feet to at least a couple tracks. "How Does the Grass Grow?" was the one track that was tempting to be skipped. ("How Does the Grass Grow?"reminded me of Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" at times and pulled me out of the overall listening experience.) ¿Have I listened to enough Bowie yet? (No more recommendations please. The next most frequent artists have been The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, and the Who - all at 5 albums, followed by 13 artists with 4 albums each.)
We are lucky to have Bowie's last two albums. Very different to his seminal works, but a crowning moment in time nonetheless.
Dave is in fine voice and fine form, this could be from 20 years earlier. It is very very Bowie.
This sounds like the Berlin trilogy albums so the cover is appropriate. I've given Bowie so many 5 ratings that the slope is steeper for him. I like the sound of this album although the songs don't have the originality and aren't up to the admittedly high standard of the Berlin trilogy or cocaine trilogy albums.
I’ll admit to being a Bowie fanboy, but only for his music from the 60’s-80’s. His last few albums ie The last day and Darkstar have a very different sound though and nothing really jumps out and resonates with me like his earlier work. Also, I’m quite disappointed in the album “art”, which is basically Heroes with a large portion whited out by a large square, wtf?
Okay, so I love Bowie, I acknowledge his vast musical genius and all that, but I don’t blindly worship everything he does. This record is lukewarm at best. Just nothing about it grabbed my attention or surprised me. And Bowie has so many entries on this list already, is this one really necessary too? Really? I don’t think so. It’s a middling effort at 2010’s hipster rock with Bowie’s gigantic name attached. Meh.
Love me some Bowie! Not his best album for sure but still not bad! Like the self titled song! Dirty Boys reminds me of a Tom Waits song which is pretty cool! All around not a bad listen!
Not Davids best album, but good for a listen through. You can tell that he put a lot of thought into each song on the album, and they are interesting to study more than to listen.
This was OK. I can't think of much more to say.
The Next Day is immediately striking with it's album cover. Taking Bowie's most iconic album art from Heroes and blocking out his face with a white square for this album's title: The Next Day. It's provocative, and instantly memorable. This is doubly true when you consider that this is Bowie's first album in a decade. Following 2003's Reality and the supporting tour, Bowie was faced with health problems that led him to largely withdraw from the public. It was only until the early 2010's when he was ready to record again. During this time, recording was done in secret, with very few people knowing there was a record in production at all. What resulted was a collection of tight rock songs that happens to show Bowie's age. Compared to Blackstar which embraced Bowie's aging voice and artistic vision, The Next Day feels like an attempt to return to form. Results are fine though, just not amazing. As good as these upbeat rock songs are, I don't feel like any of them blew me away. It's as if the album is largely being tied down. Not to say that it's bad, just restrained. I hate to compare it to Blackstar but that album would largely overshadow this one. Being a more definitive statement on Bowie's life and career, Blackstar is easily the better late-career album of the two. That being said, You Feel So Lonely You Could Die and Heat are incredible closing tracks and shows just how much talent Bowie had at this time in his life.
3.5
I like at pretty well. I sort of have to be in a mood for Bowie. There were a few notable songs. I liked it I think I'll be listening to it again in the future.
I was actually pleasantly surprised with this album - initially I wasn't too thrilled to pulled a second Bowie album in the first 6 days of this journey, especially one so recent. However, it has a different sound than I was expecting and to be honest, doesn't really sound like what I think of when I hear 'David Bowie'. The songs seemed unique enough that it kept my interest throughout. I didn't actually add any songs to my playlist, but it definitely warrants another listen soon. 6.5/10
Nice mix of "disjointed" sounds coming together to make cohesive songs, most songs have a clear musical focus. The drums fit in nicely in the tracks and they stick out when they need to. Great drum tones, different sounds/tunings that fit very well with the songs. Nicely builds up tension and resolves it in a very satisfying way, beautiful chord progressions that are clearly thought out. Very distinct vocals changing according to what suits every song best. I like that some songs stray away from typical rock to be a little more experimental and weird like "If you can see me" The sequencing feels somewhat jarring at times, feels like a collection of songs sometimes rather than a cohesive album. The bass does a nice job of driving the songs forward without being too distracting. Whenever the brass pops up it fits in with the songs very well, it adds alot. Very well made, but all in all it's not really my taste. It's a little too "monotone" for me, without a lot of musical shock value.
meh. no idea if this was good or not, maybe another listen would help but i'll probably never get round to it.
David Blowie
Sorry Dave – much as I love you, this just felt long! I can see that this has been shoehorned into a genre called Art Rock.. And it does feel very artsy-fartsy. I presume it was picked today for the song entitled ‘Valentines Day’ but there was nothing lovey-dovey about this record. It seemed lachrymose and rueful. Not necessarily a hard, listen, but the songs did seem to go on and on. I know this must’ve been a lot of hard work for him coming back after being ill and a nine year hiatus but it didn’t grab me. Poor love - as I was singing along to ‘Where are we now?’ the answer was a mine of pathos.
I listened to the first song and thought that this was not going to be a good album. Then the second song gave me hope. And that’s how the rest of the album continued, they were highs and there were lows. The highs were never fives and lows were never ones. Some of the lyrics were just plain bad, but it’s still David Bowie.
First things first, I don't think this is an album you need to hear before you die. Dude has 8 albums on this list, this seems like an easy one to cut. So, minus one star from me (though that's not Bowie's fault, but whatever). As far as the album itself goes, I had never heard this before, and I liked it. It definitely has a late-stage-artist-comeback feel to it, which to me means it reminds me of his earlier, more vital work, but it also offers up new sounds and ideas. This isn't a cash-in album at all, and Bowie clearly wasn't done being a creative force. I did feel like the album was lacking a bit of energy, though I think that may be more to the production and arrangements than the songwriting or even Bowie's vocal performance. It kind of felt like there was a gauze over the whole thing. Anyway, there were some great songs on here and several I would have chucked. Then again, very few Bowie albums are great from beginning to end, so I guess it's merely another rock-solid Bowie album. Which is cool. (Also, I loved the album art.)
Not super my thing, but nothing glaringly bad.
It was okay, black star is better
This is an okay album by Bowie. The saxophone provides a nice jazzy element that makes the album feel older than it is. Overall I didn’t find this album too remarkable as I do other Bowie albums. It didn’t seem to have any notable songs that I would return to. Still good in comparison to most albums on this list but for Bowie it was just okay. 6.0/10
wuzzzz
Not my favorite Bowie, but a really good listen this deep in his career. I appreciate this album, but no song really popped for me enough to add to my playlist.
Enjoyable Bowie
It just felt like it went forever
This was dope, but same that happens, can't find the point
Doesn't hit the high's of his classic 70's albums
Good
This feels like it's just on here because it is a Bowie album. It really isn't anything more than mediocre, especially when you compare it to the body of work that Bowie is known for. Just let the good Bowie albums speak for themselves and don't focus on the mediocre albums.
This one kind of blends in with later Bowie (besides the amazing Blackstar). There are some songs here that make me think of "musician's music" from the 90s, like very clean production with some kind of "snappy" bass playing. There are some gems here (valentine's day in particular) but this album has always kind of eluded me. I do enjoy the Scott Walker-esque "Heat" a whole lot. "my father ran the prison."
Meh. I hate to be that guy, but I like his earlier stuff more. This was just average.
Eclectic mix of styles, from jazz to prog to radio pop rock. Amazing guitar tones and vocals, and unexpected chord progressions and vocal harmonies.
Not sure what i was expecting. Seems like a more personal record. I liked it but I can't point to a best track.
All Bowie past his Ziggie days seems to be sort of the same. It's fine, but nothing I would consider groundbreaking or must listen I do need to relisten to Blackstar, though, as I think that one was a little more poignant.
Its Bowie.
I only heard a few songs from the album but I recognized them!
The wikipedia snippet about this album got me very excited to listen to it, as well as the fact that it's David Bowie, whom I've always been a fan of. I was disappointed however in how often I found myself forgetting I was listening to the album and my mind would go elsewhere. The music did little to pull me back in. They weren't inspiring, but they weren't bad. For Bowie, it wasn't that great, but for just another album on the list it was alright. Nothing special, but it certainly wasn't bad. Some songs were alright, but overall just sorta disappointingly boring. 3/5
3. Bowie albúmið á þessum lista var ágætt. Ekkert sem ég set aftur á fóninn samt.
Awesome Bowie album. It's a little bit straightforward(?) for how diverse his sound can get, but I think that that's more of a compliment to have eclectic he was as an artist. Overall it's very enjoyable, easy to listen to, and tightly packed with good ideas and songs.
3.5 rounded down because I'm being harsh! This was solid, but I listened to it back to back with "Heroes" and one of those is a 5 and the other is not lol. Might revisit, but Bowie tends to be one of those artists I really like that I'm rarely in the mood to listen to a whole album of. And if I am, there's gonna be a better choice than this one.
With the exception of a few songs, I've never really been able to get into David Bowie
I like Bowie. Cool voice. This album wasn't amazing for me though. 3.5 I think is fair for me.
Thank goodness that's over. I (still) really can't get into Bowie. A few of the songs on every album are really cool, but maybe he should have thrown those songs on like 4 albums and not put out 25 weird-for-the-sake-of-weird albums. I do understand the appeal though. I appreciate it. I just don't like it.
Had never heard this and it was surprisingly excellent. So many good songs that grabbed my attention by being either fun to dance to or just having excellent musicianship.
You know, I like Bowie, but I feel like he was in need of a friend who could tell him he needed a rewrite on some of these songs.
Best ok, maar geen mega hits. 3*
Classic. Questionable lyrics but they were different times.
Heb me er toch prima mee vermaakt.
Some good tunes but not my favorite from Bowie.
Let's be honest. Every Bowie album is at the very least good. Most are great to exceptional, which explains why he has so many on this list. But The Next Day is one one that doesn't merit consideration. I for one would replace it with Bowie's own Let's Dance, and it turns out this was indeed an album that was excluded from a later edition of the list. Again, this is a good album. It's just not upper echelon Bowie and is a bit overrated.
Meh....not a huge Bowie fan.....
Quite a stripped down guitar album, more than I was expecting at the time. His voice was showing some age, but still lots of variety
good
Once again, David Bowie and me just don’t click.
Late career Bowie, all quite second- or third-rate stuff. The lyrics are crap and the Thin Grey Duke is blowing on the uptempo numbers. Never been a big fan of Earl Slick's guitar scrawl neither. Ho hum. It's just interesting and arty enough to scrap and grapple its way to three stars.
Not even in the top five Bowie albums, is it?
This definitely felt like a David Bowie album. It wasn’t as memorable as his classic stuff but it was still an alright listen. Moments stuck out to me but not entire songs really except the last one which stuck out as not good.
Doesn't quite live up 70's Bowie, but everything the man touches is a work of art.
Good record for his later period, but still much prefer earlier stuff.
Really didn't expect the first Davie Bowie album up to be less than 10 years old...
I love David Bowie. I realized that he takes a while to grow on me though. It definitely sounds like Bowie. Nothing stood out as amazing, but it all sounded like Bowie. Listened to it three times. Maybe just not for me or maybe it just needs some more time to simmer
A David Bowie quite in a good shape but the following "Black Star" is slightly better and for the British genious this record is quite forgettable. But this means that this album remains undoubtably good.
This was fine.
Standard Bowie, which almost comes across as too predictable in a vacuum. Almost. But it was still pretty good stuff.
I'm having a hard time keeping track of all the Bowie albums especially relative to one another.
The context of this album was incredible. A surprise launch after years of silence from one of the all time greats. This is a good album but if it wasn’t Bowie and out of the blue would people listen to it over and over? I suspect not.
i jus dont rly like david bowie man
Pas mon préféré, pas mauvais pour autant
The songs are well written and have some interesting sentiments, but I can’t get over the old man vocals. I think I enjoyed his older records because of the emotion and energy his vocals brought, but that has all turned to a calmer delivery with age. 5/10
Yet another late-career Bowie album I just can’t wrap my mind around… Bowie’s singing is amazing on this record, but the arrangements just feel kind of tacky. I don’t know. I’ll figure it out one day.
pretty good.. interesting album cover... with the edited Heroes album cover 2.5 for me but I'll round up to 3
I mean, it's a solid album, but nothing groundbreaking. 3/5
This is a solid album. I love that Bowie had everyone convinced that he'd retired from music when he released it. 66 years old and he still had it going on.
Glam rock
Not reallyMy thing
It's David Bowie so it's not bad, however this feels like some of his weakest work I've heard yet. Feels like it's a soundtrack to a movie and I'm missing half the plot.
It's Bowie, so it isn't crap, but it's also very much an album produced by a man who's muse left him a long time ago
Some good songs black star was a better later Bowie album imo
Certainly not my favorite David Bowie album, but it's definitely listenable
Bowie seems to be hit or miss. This was a miss for me, but the album was still decent.
Not a Bowie fan, very repetitive, but I respect his work
Seems like pretty stand Bowie to me. Impressive considering his age/stage in his career but not massively appealing if you’re not a big fan.
Bowie's entree to his phenomenal Blackstar
Just ok. There was nothing great about this , nothing bad either.
Favorite song: Valentine's Day. At first I wasn't sure if I was liking the album, but it grew on me as I listened.
I don't hate it.
Never head this one before. Seems good. Really need to get to know it better. 3/5
Probably my favourite of the Bowie albums we've had so far. Enjoyed it.
Average for Bowie
Bowie's first album in a decade, produced again by Tony Visconti. Solid, not insanely good but solid. (5/10) FT: The Stars and You Feel So Lonely You Could Die, Next Day
I think the problem for me with randomly listening to an album each day is that for albums and artists I am unfamiliar with it is hard fornme to properly review it. When an album or an artist that I have listened or still listen to shows up I find my listen is usually better. I like Bowie and this album was fine but I feel because I haven't listened to his work enough, I couldn't see why this particular album was on the list. I liked it but can only give it a 3.
bowie is good. but this album doesn't really stand out to me. it's weird to listen to an album that has creative things that you feel like you should like, but you just don't. for example the song if you can see me, is frenetic and weird. but not my style.
Taavetin musaks jopa ihan hyvä levy. Taustamustana toimiva ja omaan korvaan pesee vanhan hittien ulkopuolisen matskun helposti.
Positiivisesti yllätti. Päällisin puolin menevän toimivaa
I started off not liking it. It kinda grew on me a the day wore on. Not something I'd listen to all the time but I may play it again
This not my jam.
I love it when we get an all-but-forgotten gem. Blackstar was proof enough that Bowie had it going on up to the end. I'll give this record the edge over the one the cover spoofs. Heroes was a one-song album. This has a lot more going on.
Timed well enough as I am watching the original The Man Who Fell To Earth. Never heard of this album and quite liked a few tracks like Where Are Now and I'd Rather Be High
One of Bowie's better later works. Getting back on track after a frankly dismal couple of decades.
Pretty boring considering the secrecy of his return. Where Are We Now is head and shoulders above the others, with that powerful, yet fragile, delivery that makes it feel more like Blackstar (which is a far better album).
My feelings towards Bowie's latter part of his back catalogue is mixed. On the one hand, I applaud his experiments with modern sounds- Little Wonder being a case in point- but quite a lot of it lacks the innovation that he was known for in his first few decades. This album just appears to pander to the masses, and on that basis- it was always bound to be lapped up by the massed ranks of Bowie fans. This album is definitely influenced by his own back catalogue rather than trying to push the envelope.
It's okay. Doesn't have many catchy numbers, or the musical interest of blackstar
Bowie is a master craftsman. There isn't a bad track here, but also -- there isn't a standout. I really wanted to like this more but did find it just a bit bland.
One day I'm going to 'get' David Bowie but this isn't the album to do it. Fine. Why are there only 4 reviews? 🤔
Its OK
David Bowie doesn’t do it for me.
