Hard to see what the fuss is about - did not enjoy this album greatly. Sounds very generic for Bowie

This album didn't stick out to me, as much of his recent work has (other than Blackstar). I listened while working and none of the songs truly stuck out to me unfortunately.

A disappointing contemporary outing from Bowie. The man sounds tired on this one, and while he's still putting his soul into every lyric, the overall performance just doesn't land satisfyingly. A large part of this is the dollar-store instrumentals that sell out the usual Bowie flair in this department, but it doesn't help this is some of the most repetitive and clichéd songwriting Dave has produced.

Disappointing and honestly totally average album, which went on for much too long. I think the same, old style of Bowie's songs was there, but they lacked some spark, of that substance to it. Also, Bowie's voice was unfortunately not up to task, or more like wasn't in the same shape as in the highest point of his career. Which isn't a problem, age works it's thing, but it's definitely something different than we used to listen to years ago. There is a chance, that this album will grow on me with time, but at the moment, there is nothing in it that I particularly enjoyed.

A few ok tracks, nothing great or even good to be honest. I was kinda glad when it was over.

Meh. More discordance, vocals almost declaimed rather than sung, and drums way too high in the mix. It feels like he's run out of ideas and new melodies so he's taken his chopped-up lyric-writing technique and applied it to the whole song structure. Apart from 'Where are we now' I didn't enjoy this much. I'm a huge fan of 1970s Bowie but haven't really liked anything between Let's Dance and Blackstar.

Wasn’t a fan that day

Listened twice and thought it was bang average.

I love the cover concept. That's fun. And I want to love this album, but it doesn't pull me in at all. This feels like some talented people fucking around in a studio, seeing what they come up with. This doesn't feel like recorded a ton and the cut it down to the gold. I'd rather listen to this than Slipknot, though, that much I've learned.

I understand why people love Bowie and I'm glad to have listened to his last two albums because of this challenge. However this just isn't my style of music. I like some of his bigger well known hits but this album i didn't like how his voice sounds or was recorded. Sorry Bowie fans.

David Bowie is without a doubt a legendary artist and he should be in the list of 1001 best albums. Not sure if this is the album that should be in here.. The production is great, the songs are not. They don’t get to me.

What the actual fuck. There are eight David Bowie albums currently on the list, and this isn't one of them, but why was it ever on the list? Even before it was put in context as a speed bump on the road to Blackstar, this was already being viewed as a middling effort from Bowie; an awkward, bumbling step back into music after over a decade absence. Furthermore, there are a number of Bowie albums not on the list that should have been on before considering this one - The Man Who Sold the World, Diamond Dogs, Lodger, Outside, Earthling, and Heathen are all significantly better albums than this. Hell, I'd say Space Oddity, Scary Monsters, and Reality were all better than this too, and those were all pretty hit or miss. I'm a huge Bowie fan, and this was a terrible inclusion and is a mediocre album.

This is my first David Bowie album, and I didn't find it to my taste. Maybe I will prefer other albums, who knows.

It is fine, and it is a great example of a quality end-of-career or comeback album, and maybe the book provides more context that's helpful. But overall I don't think this needs to be in here given David Bowie's strong showing with a huge number of other albums represented on the list. Rating is 3.5 or 3 for music, but 2 for over-representation.

Well, once again, not a a fan at all of his later work. This is totally sacrilege, but maybe I liked this marginally more than Blackstar. Either way, it just feels so stuck in a by-gone era, Bowie's vocals are abysmal, and even though he's trying to touch on some interesting topics, the music falls so flat for me that none of it lands. Funny thing about Bowie. I thought I kind of liked Bowie. But then this stupid album list threw SO much at me, and made me sit and listen to it. I realized I hate Bowie. The albums just aren't very good. And those were the "good albums", like Ziggy Stardust. This isn't Ziggy Stardust. This is 2013 Bowie. And we all know how great late albums from 70s rock bands are. I can't wait to see this album generator give me Aerosmith's Honkin' on Bobo, Mojo by Tom Petty, or the Rolling Stones masterwork A Bigger Bang. Point is, I guess you have to give credit to Bowie for keeping at it into the second term of the Obama administration, but I don't know anyone who is enough of a Bowie fan to call The Next Day a Great Album, an essential work that MUST be listened to in one's life, to properly enrich their understanding of popular music. I literally never heard of it until I opened this webpage this morning. I am normally a live and let live person. I have no reason to hate on music that I don't like, but damn it, this album is hot garbage. This album is artless, soulless, and toneless. It is an anachronism, an album out of time. It doesn't fit in Bowie's peak era and it definitely does not belong in the 2010s. It is generic and lifeless. It's Fat Elvis sweating through his jumpsuit at the Tropicana. Even the album cover is half-assed, phoned in, warmed up repeat of another Bowie album. I hate it. I don't want to listen to David Bowie anymore. Please, please make it stop.

Despite owning and enjoying much of his catalog, this album is boring. The only thing that caught my ear was his use of a riff from “Apache” during “How Does the Grass Grow?”. Completely forgettable otherwise.

I hadn't heard of David Bowie, though I've heard a lot of his popular songs. I'm not so sure, but I feel like this shouldn't have been the albun that represents him on this list. Especially for a 2010s record, and especially for a very experienced artist, this didn't interest me at all. felt disorganized

Right off the bat, this album just feels like the end of a long amazing career. Everyone falls off at some point, and honestly this sounds like a fall off. I'm not well versed in David Bowie, and I know he is a legend, but I'm not feeling that with this album. I really really hate it...

For the Bowie completionists I guess. It's fine enough. It's more a 2.5 but I'm giving a PROTEST one star at the excess of minor David Bowie albums.

This is not a great album. I really don't know why this one made the cut for Bowie.

The Next Day: boring ass dad rock Dirty Boys: cool groove cool vibe but it's just okay The Stars (Are Out Tonight): literally this is a suburban dad jamming with his golf buddies in the garage. like local worship band level uncool Love is Lost: starting to accept that this album might just be ass. why does the mix feel so empty? it's doing the song that's there a disservice because it sounds like cheeks and nothing is hitting with any force Where Are We Now?: his vocals sound nice on this. it's just a cheesy piano ballad but I'm not mad at it. reminds me a little bit of Shakey Graves' more recent stuff. Valentine's Day: first song I actually like, nice hook and the extra little guitar riff after the chorus is gongeous. catchy If You Can See Me: this shit is corny as fuckkkk. The Mars Volta for even lamer people I'd Rather Be High: hate this Boss of Me: I like this one. something about it feels off-kilter in a cool way. Dancing Out In Space: definitely was into it when the song first kicked in but the vocals nuked that entirely How Does The Grass Grow?: ummmm yaaaaa ya ya yaaaaa ya ya yayayayaaaaa (You Will) Set The World On Fire: it's just so unremarkable. sounds like it's from a musical You Feel So Lonely You Could Die: extremely decent song, sounds like some of his older stuff. cheesy ballads are 2/2 on this album Heat: love the spacey hypnotic atmosphere but it just doesn't go anywhere interesting enough to suit me _____ SCORE: 3/10 ADDED TO PLAYLIST: --

I am not a fan of any of the Bowie album’s recommendations so far.

Utrolig kjedelig album, vanskelig å komme seg igjennom. Hvis dette var et comeback for Bowie, må det han ga ut etter Scary Monsters virkelig ha vært dårlig... Hadde det ikke vært for Blackstar, hadde Sickboy's unifying theory of life fortsatt runget sann: At one point you've got. You lose it. And it's gone forever. Og selv om denne skiva på sett og vis kan regnes som alright, vet man innerst inne at den egentlig er ganske dritt. At den ble vurdert som ett av 1001 album man må høre før man dør er direkte useriøst.

This sounds exactly like a rock star in stuck 20+ years in the past trying to modernize their sound and missing the mark big time. It's just so cheesy.

Not for me.

He kinda sounds too old to be singing. Which I know that's mean, but I can just hear it in his voice. After learning that he died three years after this release, it seems like he should have called it quits before making this album. "Where are we now?" was really hard to listen too. "If you can see me?" was another hard listen. I'm sure his older albums are better and I can't wait to hear them.

I feel like the only Bowie record after the 00s that deserves attention is his very last. This one sounds like an effort to put out an album. It feels a bit uninspired.

Yeah nah this isn't it. I imagine this was produced the same way Clint Eastwood makes movies with as little takes as you need to make an album. There's a couple of songs I dug that I may come back to but as a whole this was a rough listen for me. Insane choice to say you need to listen to this album specifically. Is every Bowie album on here? There's at least 10 albums by him I could see being rightfully on this list. Did we really need more? Highlight: Boss of Me

In a nutshell: "adult contemporary art rock" I had flashbacks to Morrissey's solo albums and Berlin Trilogy era Bowie while listening to this. David's vocals on Dirty Boys had a Jim Morrison/Josh Homme flair to them; a song that could appear on a Peaky Blinders episode. The Next Day overall felt weak. Some reviews on here say he "lost his edge" for this one. Accurate. Overall 2/10

Meh. I like a lot of David Bowie's music, but this probably shouldn't be on this list. From such a large body of work, there are much better albums. I haven't checked which other albums are to come, but I presume Ziggy Stardust will be there. Even Let's Dance. There must be way more than 1001 albums better than this. Voting 1/5 not because it's especially bad, but because I don't feel it belongs on the list.

As a huge Bowie fan, I feel very strange giving this a 1 star review. This is a very solid 3 star album, but there's absolutely no need for it to be on the list, and that's what I reserve my 1 star reviews for. That's just how it is, sorry Mr. Jones. There are many other fantastic Bowie albums to check out - I would hate for this to be someone's introduction to him!

My God this was so dull. I was so excited for my first Bowie album on this list and it sucked. Very underwhelming. It had a few moments where I would think it was picking it up, but they were too short-lived to raise the score.

Nope. Somehow saddens me to rate this only 1 star, since it's still Bowie, but I don't have the patience for bad albums anymore. And this one is bad. Not a single enjoyable song between the first ten or even the slightest hint that this might change for the following ones, so I skipped them.

I think we all know someone who is a completist about a particular artist. They think that if there is a recording of Miles Davis or Bob Dylan or Phish or whomever singing in the shower at age 68 that everyone must hear it. It is clear that Robert Dimery is a completist when it comes to David Bowie. Now, there are worse artists to be obsessed with, but I am done with humoring this clear delusion. [Insert Meme of Robert Deniro saying, "Are you saying that David Bowie made some albums not worth listening to?" and the Joker replying, "I am. And I'm tired of pretending that there aren't" here]. There is a scene in the television show "Sports Night" where a character is trying to edit a baseball game down to its highlights and he gets too in the weeds and just can't cut anything. His version has five minutes of a pitcher pitching to a batter with no hits, and a coworker comes in and asks why he hasn't cut that and he replies that you have to see it because it allows you to appreciate the battle. Then the producer pops her head in and says, "Just give me the double off the wall, the homer in the fifth, and the error at third" and that is the end of it. In the spirit of that scene, the David Bowie albums that make the cut of 1001 albums you should hear before you die are Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Low, He has a lot of great songs, but they are spread out over too many albums filled with too many not great songs to warrant any further inclusion on a list of this kind. And I am tired of pretending otherwise.

This album was so boring! I almost fell asleep listening and Roslyn actually did, haha. I have a lot of respect for someone who’s put out 20 studio albums and I really like a few earlier Bowie songs (Starman, Golden Years, Space Oddity) but this album was unremarkable and forgettable. Like Pearl Jam, I really tried to like David Bowie at one point in my life and it just didn’t work. Neil Young is another one in that category and I’m sure we’ll get one of his albums on the shuffle sometime soon. One star
