Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Hate to say I told you so, was on air almost everyday on the bus from Vitot to Louviers. The rest of the album was nice and consistent and the songs are nicely following each other. I'll revisit it for sure. 3.5
A 28 minute album makes me happy. A quick and fun listen.
Had this album back in the day and went to see them live. This hasn’t really stood the test of time though. Obviously there are 2 or 3 bangers but the rest is all a bit generic. I feel like there sharp image and Pelle’s charisma as a front man were doing a lot of the heavy lifting
3/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/the-hives/your-new-favourite-band/ Don’t think this really has a place in this list, and I say that as someone who actually used to listen to The Hives a bit. Sure it’s all energetic fun, but hardly anything groundbreaking. Definitely not among the best of this generation either.
El álbum que me tocó para mi cumpleaños, fue una experiencia entretenida, corto y con mucha energía
Excuse me? This is another compilation. I thought the editors had a 'no compilation' rule? It's starting to look like "oh we have to include some non-Anglosphere acts or people will think we're chauvinistic. Oh here's a Brazilian and some Swedes. Just pick whatever album is the easiest to find, no one will know the difference. See, we're multicultural." *head desk* Anyway, I don't hate it. It's kinda' fun. Not really 'new favorite' (err 'favourite'- because European) but it's ok. Probably stays on the iPod for a while. Makes me want to listen to Agabas (Norwegian death jazz).
This one was so close to a 4, I love that garage rock sound. Just didn’t quite stand out
Krijsen
Everyone knows the opener to this one, a banger. 28 mins is very short indeed for an album. Let’s see what the rest brings. Not as good as expected or hoped, maybe I just don’t like this kind of punk. I hadn’t noticed it finished. 3/5.
Aquí hay más como Die, All Right!, Supply and Demand, Here We Go Again, The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime... 12 temas en menos de media hora. No son The Strokes (ni para lo bueno ni para lo malo) , ni tampoco The White Stripes pero sí que son muy disfrutables.
Not bad - not something I’d particularly search out to revisit
Fun but unremarkable
Some great songs, but I really don’t love a greatest hits album and there isn’t a lot of variation here
Started incredibly strong and then became incredibly redundant. I guess that is to be expected when you have three chords and a bucket full of testosterone.
Every EA Sports game soundtrack from my childhood
Yeah alright. I never really thought they were excellent. At the time there wasn’t a lot of good guitar music so I got a little into them but they never really stood out for me.
Energy, angst, catchy, perfect for 13 year old me. A little too basic for me now, maybe? Still very fun, but does get minus points for sorta being a compilation album.
Hate to Say I Told You So, Here I Go Again. Pretty close to a 4.
A cheeky compilation sneaks into the book, pieced together from The Hives’ first few albums. But journalists at the time were too busy creaming over their formulaic, garage-rock-revival-in-zoot-suits to notice they’d been around for a decade before this came out. Yeah it’s got some memorable riffs and chug along hits but it didn’t really do anything massively special compared to what else was going on at the time and then faded rapidly back into anonymity.
Fun punky vibe. Enjoyed.
Back to back bangers
I fuck with this one I think
is it weird to include a 25 minute comp on this list? exceedingly 2001
I don't hate to say I told you so tbh
Good because short
Fun, energetic and chaotic
A hard hitting, loud rock punk album that hails from the time of the "The" bands in the early 200s. Some good tracks on here. Highlights: "Hate to Say I Told You So" and Supply and Demand"
Fun post-punk garage band rock. I may revisit from time to time. But not a lot... 3 stars. Good, but not great.
Not mine. Early noughties rock band, fine with me.
Not a bad album, but not a fan of compilation albums. I love finding those hidden B-side gems. On an album, CD any do that on a compilation. They all are the best of the band. That being said the Hives are a good band. My advice is to pickup either of their 2 earlier albums that made up this one.
Not the best garage rock revival album, but the sound definitely took me back to the late 90s early 2000s.
I did enjoy it quite a bit but songs sound rather similar.
bold for them to name themselves my new fav band. they probably would’ve been if i was there back then
Aw. These guys are Swedish. I think it’s so cute when Swedes dress in little outfits and form bands and what not. Its adorable. It’s like they think they’re people. “Borgen gurgen wera gonna maken garaga rocka revival moosic flerven fluven”. You sure are Johan! Adorable.
Slightly irritating and samey, first track ok
Music can be fun, and should be when possible. This is very fun, it rattles along at a fair old lick and the riffs and lyrics are knuckle headed but fun. Live I imagine these songs come alive, but as an album the tracks blur into each other and you get the sense whilst it’s fun there are other bands that do it better
Album No. 0187 on my list. The Hives are certainly one of the most influential rock bands of their (and my) generation, but I’ve never listened to much of their music, except for a few big hits (which are partly included on this compilation. I was curious how the rest (i.e. the majority) of “Your New Favorite Band”) would hold up. To be honest, it was okay. Not terribly bad, but also not crazily good. I still like the bigger hits on this one, but between most songs, there’s not much variability; the same recipe is the base for most of them. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but I really found many songs on this not really distinguishable. The Hives’ singer, besides, is a pretty charismatic frontman, but I’m not the biggest fan of his singing. The indie-punk-pop-rock sound of the band is pretty great, though and can certainly compete with contemporaries like The Strokes. All in all, an okay/solid album. Not enough for 4 stars, but a pretty good 3 (like 3.7 or something). I’ll add “Hate To Say I Told You So”, “Main Offender”, and “A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T” to my playlist. 3/5 stars.
Ganz nett
Bit of an unfair advantage for The Hives with the compilation album Your New Favorite Band which skims the best songs off their first two albums. The top track is Hate To Say I Told You So off their second album. The Hives do a great job capturing that 70s garage rock sound 25 years later. High energy speed guitar and drums with scratchy lead vocals and lots of screaming bring you back in time… (3.3*s) Like their sound in small doses.
Meg
Thought the hives was one of those bands I've always heard good things about and never listened to. Song one and turns out it's one of those bands I don't realize I am familiar with. Great punk energy, makes me want to listen to more. That being said, I still only remember that first song
Euh vraiment pas
Nöd schlecht. Guet isch‘s nur 28min lang gsi
Good album, well written musically. For a newer band, they have some good sound reminiscent of the Ramones, Bad Brains, etc.
A pretty good punk rock album. I enjoyed this, it had a bit of a 2000s vibe to it. No compilation albums eh??
New Favourite Band is a bit of a stretch Fave track: Hate to say I told you so
Short, sharp, noisy. 3.5/5
It probably deserves a 4, but to put a Greatest Hits album against 1,000 other single album deserve some kind of handicap
dope
Lots of energy and rocking arrangements. In the vein of The Strokes, etc.
Fun punk, I way prefer this to the strokes. As a compilation album this doesn't quite make sense for the 1001 albums list, but as a collection of their musical oevre it's a good showcase. Ripping lines, a sense of fun, punky energy, garage energy in a good way. Not blowing anything out of the water, but decent
2.5
This is a difficult one to score. I really like The Hives. I like every song on this album. Problem is I don’t think a compilation album should be on here. If Veni Vidi Vicious had been on here I would be giving it a 4 minimum. Top Track - Automatic Schmuck
I bought this on CD back at the time but it's not something I've listened to a lot over the years. I wasn't a Strokes fan, quite liked the White Stripes but when I first heard Hate To Say I Told You So I loved it, although I wouldn't go as far as to say they were my new favourite band, but the favourite of that garage rock revival crop certainly. It's good but a little one-dimensional and nothing matches the opening track's energy.
This was fun but didn't make any lasting impact
It was pretty good and had some fun moments. It didn’t really grab me, though.
Some good stuff here that feels disjointed in how it sounds and flows due to the nature of it being a compilation album.
Short and sweet, enjoyable listen
They're not my new favourite band, but I can see they were for some. I reckon they had fun time recording that album, had a good energy.
Punky but clean set of songs, decent fun all the way through, not my favorite band but if I were a sentient advertising agency then maybe? Also classed as a compilation so it's a weird presence on this list, just accepting it for what it is since it's here
obsessed w the guitar
Very surprised at how much I enjoyed this
Not bad
Bit strange to include a compilation album, why bother including several albums from any given band on this list when you can just do a best of?! Nonetheless, The Hives are not a band I’ve listened to beyond the singles I know, which I quite like to be fair and this was a decent enough listen. I can only imagine they have albums worthy of the list but if they don’t then this inclusion is all the more strange, given the list is about albums, not artists. If I was to explore further then I guess I’d put an album on rather than listen to this again.
Bit samey throughout. I bought it when it came out and I haven't listened to it for 20+ years.
Waarom niet veni vidi viciuous?
yeha i tw as alrigth
The Hives are kind of good, but if we're being honest, there's nothing that that we haven't heard before. If you like The Sonics, you'll like The Hives. This collection in particular really demonstrates their attempts to make it big. Not an album, but a sort of mini-greatest hits from their first three releases, repackaged with a bold claim as the title. The strategy may have worked for the Clash, but it feels a little more desperate here. "Hate to Say I Told You So" is undeniably great. The rest is more or less standard punk. But it did alright and I suppose it scratches an itch. Maybe not such a significant album looking back on it, but it's good enough listen.
well they've got a nice aggressive kick drum that makes me want me to nod along for 30 minutes. that counts for something, right? nothing about this feels particularly novel or original though, so it's largely forgettable, but it's got a strong energy that almost makes me think i'm appreciating something more noteworthy. i find the arrogance of a compilation release for their third album to be obnoxious though. maybe this is a hot take as i've not really thought too hard on it, but i feel like "best hits" albums are entirely commercial in a way that makes them antithetical to art. a necessary evil (this album exists to target a UK audience), but re-releasing tracks without new performances or reprises or extras or anything is just so *boring*. the creative equivalent of beige paint.
I know people hate the idea of compilation albums on here, but I'd rather have that then albums which feel included due to 2 out of 8 songs being important. Slightly more Punk Franz Ferdinand watered down by about half a liter of arena rock. It carries its energy well so its hard to hate, it ticks all the pop punk boxes and as such I am whelmed. Like if you put this on in the car I would not be annoyed, and I would probably nod along a bit if I felt good, but that's about it. It's going to be really hard to find new ways to rephrase "it's mid" another few hundred times reviewing these albums.
This Is My Main Offender 1001 Albums Generator 225 (2/11/2026) Less than 30 minutes of simple, punchy garage punk. It's very of its time and plays things pretty safe. Hate To Say I Told You So and Main Offender are both classic tunes that I really love, but there isn't much that matches their quality. It often feels like this album is just pure energy with not much else to it. Whether or not you like that will be up to personal preference. Also, having a compilation album on a list like this feels a bit unfair especially when I had to listen to mid-ass Ray Charles albums, whereas a compilation of his would have been fantastic. I don't hold that against this album tho. It's like a 3/5. Favs: Hate To Say I Told You So Main Offender Outsmarted Least Fav: Untutored Youth
2.5 Didn't really think this compilation served the band well. Everything just sorta sounded the same. I generally like the band and would love to see a live show, it looks like they put on a pretty good preformance.
Fun!
Er jo faktisk en compilation og ikke et album? For mye mas
Tons of punk energy. You only need to hear a couple of songs to have heard the whole album, otherwise it's just minor variations in how to achieve the soft-loud dynamics. Twelve songs in under half an hour; they don't overstay their welcome.
I saw the live in 2010, they were every bit as intense and energetic as it sounds like they should. One of the second tier bands of the whole post punk garage rock revival of the early oughts which is super over represented in this list, The Hives are cool. Leaning into punky garage rock, very energetic, high sense of humor band who don’t take themselves too seriously, The Hives are a very fun listen. This compilation is a bit uneven though and starts off stronger than it finishes. Maybe listen to their next album. Anyway three or four stars I guess.
Great opening track and then it seemed like simple early 2000s garage rock, with a little bit of class
I liked this album fine it didn’t blow me away but I still had an enjoyable time listening to it. I did feel like the songs and the album as a whole was very short and felt one note most of the time. There wasn’t enough range for me personally. Overall, this was a solid punk rock album that I liked and would listen to again.
Fine, not really my jam but I can vibe with some of it, specifically the first and last track. 2.75/5
I mean, it was a fun listen but I'm not sure about its significance as far as appearing on a list like this. I don't have a huge level of knowledge about garage rock, but I feel like I'd choose like a White Stripes from the same time period over this? It made me want to listen to some actual punk, specifically Rancid's And Out Come the Wolves.
Might not be my new favorite but a band I’d listen to again.
Entretenido y enérgico
What a different time
I enjoyed the hits
One of the indie sounding/garage rock revivalist bands of the early 2000s, while the Hives is not indeed now my new favourite band but they aren't bad; just carried by their hit "Hate To Say I Told You So". Otherwise, their music is normal garage rock; lyrics attempting to be cheeky, fuzzy and distorted guitars, high energy.
Jangly garage punk of the type that the early 2000s loved. Not really my thing. I was never a Strokes fan, and I don't think I'll be a Hives fan either. Vaguely reminds me of The Murder City Devils, but without the sort of dark sailor vibes that make me love that band.
Nostalgia intensifies! 'Hate to Say I Told You So' was on the mtv2 rock countdown for a long time. A sub-30min album with 12 songs on it is something to treasure. And I like the lyrics. But their sound is too "shouty guitar" for me. I never woulda guessed they're Swedish. Highlight: 'The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime'
Love the garage punk sound. Glad it made a comeback in the late 90s early 00s. This album had a few great tunes and the rest are not bad. Strange that a bad made a “greatest hits” album after only two albums. And stranger that it would make this list. List should all original albums.
Bueno
just another Stooges band from Fagersta
Love the energy and attitude. Another pretty samey sounding album but this one doesn't overstay its welcome. That said it's not going into my library. Okay songs if I hear them in the wild but nothing to go out of my way for.
Fun but front loaded. The first 3 are the best 3, and very good they are too. I once danced naked to them with two other guys. Fun times. After that, they run out of steam. The band AND the naked dancing men.
I was familiar with their hit song from this album but have never actually heard the album itself. It's not bad, something I would have loved if I was in my teens when it came out. I was probably just a little too old to get into this album but the music is nice and upbeat. Plenty of energy without being exhausting. Might not be something I would listen to all the time but it's not bad maybe for background music at a get together.
It's decent garage rock. For me better as a singles band. The album loses interest for me like a lot of bands of this genre do.
Plenty of energy from these guys but I found the songs pretty one-dimensional apart from Hate to Say I Told You So, which is a banger.
My new favorite band, huh? That's one bold-ass claim if I've ever seen one. You know what else it is? Wrong. The Hives are not my new favorite band, as this album didn't really wow me. Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room. This isn't a real album. Your New Favorite Band is a compilation album, which means it's not technically supposed to be on this list. Huh. How did that happen? I don't know. It's not like the Hives didn't have actual albums that could've been put on the list instead. They did. They had 3 of them in 2005 when the album list first released, so they probably should've placed one of those on the list if they really had to get the Hives on here. This then raises a bigger question. Do the Hives even belong on this list to begin with? Do they need to have an album on this list? Eh. I'm not entirely against it, but I'm also not rooting for it. They're one of the more successful early 2000s garage rock revival bands, but they're definitely not at the top of that list. Like, they're obviously not as deserving of being here as the Strokes or the White Stripes, but they probably deserve an album more than the Vines, so they at least have that going for them. Is this a good collection of songs here? Sure. It's solid. It's not exactly mind-blowing, but it's alright. The energy is certainly respectable. The riffs and such are fun and I like the songs. I'm not huge on the vocals. I wouldn't call them bad, but they're not really my thing personally, you know? The album doesn't overstay its welcome in the slightest. That's always good to know. Overall, while this album hasn't made the Hive my new favorite band, it also didn't exactly disappoint. It's a good listen. Solid 3/5.
This one's just alright. It's not bad by any means, in fact it was a fun introduction to a band that I only knew by name, and I liked some of the songs a lot. However it's nothing terribly special overall, especially compared to many other albums on this list. It's a fine compilation album by a good band, but not on par with the other albums I've heard so far. A solid 3/5
I like The Hives. They are a fun band. These are fun songs. This loses points because it is a compilation and that goes against the spirit of 1001 ALBUMS you must hear before you die. Favorite songs are Hate To Say I Told You So, Supply and Demand, and The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime.
Finally an album from the 2000’s!! I’m more of a fair weather enjoyer of The Hives so I’ve never listened to an entire album. It was definitely cool, probably shouldn’t have listened to it in the morning but it did take too much away from it. I definitely need to spin it again at a different time
This album is the exact median of this exercise. Its solid. They have a sound. Lo-fi with hi-fi production. Its good.
Completely missed this during my childhood, although they got quite some traction. Short and sweet punk! Compositions are tasty, good musicianship. Still not my cup of tea but I can put this on now and then
I was irritable at first but some emphatic performances and solid songwriting won me over a bit. A bit of a strange pick considering this is a compilation album though. I was moody and judgy about this record until “Untutored Youth” came on. A song equivalent to giving everyone the finger! “Mad Man” is probably my pick of the bunch here. It’s wholly unoriginal, I’ve heard that guitar riff a million times, but nevertheless it’s a ball of energy that won’t be denied. Torn a bit on how to view this one. Also “Luno” by Bloc Party came on auto play after this comp ended and it was just a better song than most of the stuff on here, in every way. Ultimately, this is a 3/5 stars, but I have my hang ups about it
kind of noisy garage band vibes
Short and punchy songs, some great memories but the second half drops off a lot
Meh
It's a very quickly paced album. The songs have a fast bpm but I liked what was happening. The lyrics were lost on me this first time around. 6/10
Very odd, a compilation is on this list. At this point, maybe the greatest hits from the Hives. I do only know this first track, it was a classic in the early-00s
Basic, but fun in short doses. Of its time, rather than timeless.
felt like a whole album of the same song. the sound is alright but i want a bigger standard deviation
Sounds like punk rock to me. Not really anything I have to complain about, other than the songs sounding very similar. I thought it was alright, but I’ll still with the earlier punk groups.
Like the genre, found the album a little samey. Not sure I'd remember this. 2.5/5
I quite like The Hives music, but I find it very hard to love. I’m not a fan of the early-2000s garage-rock revival generally, and the fact that they misunderstood the dictionary definition of “hives” and thought they were naming themselves after a highly infectious and lethal disease hints at their inauthenticity. All their commercialism and fame-seeking is a turn off to me. Some of the songs on this compilation are just slightly heavier versions of all that generic garage-rock that was around at the time, but some of the songs from their first album that appear on this compilation (Untutored Youth, A.K.A I.D.I.O.T) sound like 90s so-cal punk bands like Offspring. Apparently their live shows are great, but I saw them at Witnness in 2002 and don’t remember being blown away.
Hmm, a compilation. Seems against the rules. Lol. I remember these guys. Fun. 3 Heard before? A couple Owned: No: 32/124 (25%) Will I get? No
I haven't listened to this band in like 20 years. I know someone who was obsessed with this band back then, and they said this was their last good album before they had a hit and keep trying to find that sweet sweet money . Still catchy and fun
If I had listened to it at the time I think I would have liked it more. Doesn’t really age well. Having said that was enjoyable or maybe a much needed pick up from what we have had.
Day 97 An absolute staple of music festivals in the Uk over the past 2 decades or so, I’ve seen The Hives several times and always had an absolute blast. One of the most charismatic live bands I’ve ever seen, yet somehow the studio albums just don’t do it it for me anywhere near as much. 6/10 Highlights Hate to say I told you so Main offender
legal
Maybe not my new favorite, but enjoyable, hard rocking, punk/alternative sound. But boo! for putting a greatest hits type album on the list. 3-
3/5 listened to half of it: not offensivly bad, but nothing stands out enough to be added to a playlist other than the first song
3/5 - cool punk "album" (really a compilation, not sure why it's on here), not too special though
Nuh uh
I don’t know. Kinda boring. If I were an 18 y o boy I’d really like this. If I didn’t know about punk already.
OH BOY MORE PUNK YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (the bias to punk and grunge on this list will be the death of me)
3.5
Erster Song super gut, danach alle recht ähnlich, keine große Abwechslung
Grungy garagy punky riffs, repeat, rave on, right! Formulaic yes, but the supply and demand is fun along the way. Not sure you should listen to more than a couple songs at a time, lest they turn into the same song.
Putting a collection on here feels against the spirit of this list, but it's the Hives so I guess I'll let it slide. The Hives were one of the more fun groups to come out of the garage rock revival (I also only recently found out that they are from Sweden too!) The more recognizable tracks will be found in the first half of this collection, but the second half is fine enough. You won't find much depth in garage rock anyway, so it's best to just let yourself become a prisoner to the frenetic pace. Still wish one of their previous or proceeding albums would've been included instead.
I liked it. Would listen again, but also it’s not going to be in my rotations consistently. Perhaps gets a bit same-y quite quickly.
Pretty alright but the standout is definitely Hate To Say I Told You So. low 3/5
Pretty good, a lot more garage than I expected. from Sweden!
This was alright. Id describe it as punk rock without teeth, sterilized to be perfect for commercials and movie soundtracks. It's a type of music that needs to exist and certainly has a place, but I can only hope this album serves and an introduction to punk for someone learning about the genre.
British punk rock. Kinda samey throughout without a whole lot of depth. Good to jam to a bit.
Don't really believe a compilation album should count. It's pretty good, 2.5
kind of reminded of the struts in a weird way
Listenable but a bit much all in one go.
Not sure what a compilation album is doing here. It's fine. A little rough around the edges.
Not my style. But a decent listen
2001 An updated Iggy and The Stooges, which is a compliment. I seem to recall this being a compilation, released off the back of an unexpected single success. Anyway, it's decent punk rock. It's on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
Ok
Ver hard to decide if I like it or not. It is punk rock but not in a way that I enjoy it.
When I was first learning guitar at 14 I heard Hate To Say I Told You so and thought it would be a cool one to learn. I used to print out guitar tabs and keep them in my guitar case. I went to a house party with my guitar one time and I remember pulling out my guitar and some dude saw the tabs and made fun of the song. That’s my memory of this band. I never listened to this album before and I think I was hoping for more like that song but was kind of disappointed because it was a lot more yelling than I expected. 3.2
This is a 3.5 for me. I think having a compilation is a wrong move, though. It should have just been their second album, Veni Vidi Vicious. Most of the songs are good, and if I didn't know it was a compilation, I would like it more, but I just don't think this is a great way to show who The Hives are and how great they really can be.
just a comp album
They are not my new favorite band, but it was fine
It doesn’t seem like compilation albums should be included. And I feel like if you are going to pick you best songs it should be better than this. Still I mostly enjoyed it.
Ikke mitt nye favorittband, men slettes ikke dårlig heller. Innertier åpning på albumen.
Loud, and a little repetitive. While the album delivers a solid dose of punk-infused rock, it can feel a bit one-note over time.
Not bad. Pretty decent punk album no real complaints. They were super super tight
Not a lot to say much about, pretty short but pretty fun.
Uma junção das melhores músicas da banda que ficou muito bom! Álbum cheio de atitude e uma excelente sonoridade.
3/5 pretty good puck rock/pop
As far as early-aughts garage rock throwback "the" bands go, the Hives are a distant third place. This album is "Hate to Say I Told You So" (which is fantastic) plus a bunch of songs that sound similar but aren't as good.
Short songs, short album. Very good
every song sounds like background music for 2000s teenie movies
I'd have to be the right mood but overall liked the album. It's nice to have a short album once in a while too.
#127/1001 (not Ministry, which was the 128th listened to). Ok, one of those bands again, who not only discovered rock and roll again, but most likely also saved it, at least if you believe UK and/or US press, at least I assume. But yes, they are fun, and come in with some good tunes, touring the "if a song is over 2 minutes it must be boring" kind of in your face garage mentality. There are a few bands in Finland at least as good as these ones, and perhaps comparisons to hundreds of other acts might be valid as well. So I'm sorry if I didn't become a convert.
-i liked the way this started out as more cut-and-dry garage rock but then quickly became much more punk-oriented. i feel like i got a good glimpse into the band’s rock capabilities -which makes sense since it’s a compilation so idek why it’s on here. it was decent tho, not the most amazing i’ve heard but i was vibing the whole time -Favorites are Hate To Say I Told You So and Untutored Youth
Mid 3
Rasante Garage-Rock-Explosion mit Hits wie „Hate to Say I Told You So“. Laut, wild, aber als Compilation etwas unausgewogen. Solider Einstieg, kein Meisterwerk.
Plenty of brash energy but a little too riotous for me
Ganz gut, aber etwas zu punkig für mich. Außerdem ein Best of Album, das ist gemogelt.
It rocks but also lacks a bit of the quality of their later albums like "Tyrannosaurus Hives". Besides that it got quite short and is only a compilation. favourite: "Hate To Say I Told You So"
Sharp, aggressive, in your face, fast, catchy. Really good. Reminds me of The Beatsteaks. Good.
Samey music that I enjoy
It was fine 6/10
There were a couple of decent songs here, but this was mostly mid-level Brit punk (seriously, how many more albums like this do we need on this list???). Low 3
Forgot about these guys... Hate To Say I Told You So is a solid brit-pop jam. Otherwise, I'd say this is better than average, but not by much. The songs are compact and punchy with solid energy throughout. A solid pop-punk record that runs inside of 30 minutes. High 3 for me.
As far as punk goes this gets a 👍
Saw Hives last year and I must say they are much more enjoyable while jumping around on the sand then they are while sitting at my desk chair. Sounded like a lot of other punk that has come up. AKAIDIOT was a fun one though. Lower 3.
This band ROCKED at Oceans Calling last year. Put on one of the most electric live shows I've ever seen tbh. Realized seeing them that I knew a few of their songs including Hate to Say I Told You So, which bangs. There is some good stuff on here for being not a huge punk guy. It's definitely more of a refined rawness to it. Looking now this seems like a compilation album which is kinda lame to be on the list.
7/10. it was great just not my favorite. saving it 2 my playlist, tho. favourite track was Automatic Schmuck!!!!!!!!! and Main Offender 2 i guess
I enjoyed this compilation of the bands first 2 albums. I love the fast pace and punk ish tones but it still comes across as fun to me
I had "tyranosaurus hives" on cd back in the day - this was a fun throwback but I'm not sure why this compilation is included rather than one of their actual albums. This got me through a very busy morning with some much needed pep.
I have no idea how this album is on this list but not Tyrannosaurus Hives, the easily superior album. Go listen to that one instead. I guess it's a compilation of songs from their first two albums? Strange choice, and like a lot of albums on this list, it feels like it was included only because the author thought to include a certain band or genre, but not knowing much about the bands or their music, they just put the debut albums on the list and call it a day. Lazy! Decent album but not as good as their other ones.
It’s fine - but nothing to get super excited about. Call it 2.5 rounded up to 3
Decent, but got a bit old. Compilation albums on here feel a bit like cheating too
Not a punk guy. Not a post-punk guy. They sound like every other band of this genre but maybe I like these guys a little bit better. Feeling generous today.
Your New Favourite Band is less a traditional album and more a compilation that introduced The Hives to a wider audience outside Sweden. It is fast, brash, and deliberately over the top, packed with short garage punk blasts that rarely creep past the three-minute mark. Songs like “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Main Offender” are still the standouts, built on crunchy riffs, barked vocals, and a sense of swagger that borders on parody but works because of the sheer conviction behind it. The problem is that once you have heard a few tracks, you have more or less heard the formula. The relentless pace and similar structures mean the songs can blur together, making the album feel more like a burst of energy than something you want to sit with for a long time. Still, it captures a moment when garage rock revival was fun and exciting, and it explains why The Hives briefly felt unstoppable. Loud, stylish, and cheeky, even if it does not have much staying power.
Compilation albums have no place on a list like this. As far as I'm aware this is the only one on the list so it's at least better than the Rolling Stones list, but still I don't see why they didn't just put "Veni Vidi Vicious" on here instead. That being said, I do like the Hives. They're like the Strokes but more punk. I'm fine with them being on this list, I just wish it was an actual studio album. Favorite track: Hate To Say I Told You So
Fun quick punk album.
Clean, short and sweet et amusant. Ca se perd un peu travers les 1000 bands clones qui font de ce style là tho.
OK
background noise 3
“Hate to say i told you so” clears the rest of this
Fun, aggressive energy, but a little monotonous after a while. A dirty, minimal punk sound. Makes me think that there needs to be more rock n roll today; it's gone away. A lot of the songs start to sound very similar. Hate to Say I Told You So, Main Offender, Here We Go Again seem like stand out songs. "The Hives Are Law And You Are Crime" is a great title for a song. As a whole, this album reminds me of going to a punk festival in my twenties and asking at one point in the night, "didn't they just play this song?"
The Hives are pretty run o the mill garage rock. High energy, low effort end product. Rock and roll attitude thats kind of a facade, but that was garage rock. It was and people forget, a revival movement. All in all its not a bad compliation but a compilation at that. Just like the many compilations on this list. You cant distill a bands efforts down to a greatest hits catalogue.
It’s a compilation. A good one but it’s not an album!
Not a big fan of compilations like this. Good energetic garage rock though although the songs do all sound very similar!
I knew the main song "Hate To Say I Told You So". I didn't know the rest. Seems like they were a fun live band -- matching black/white tuxes and high energy. The album itself is decent, but none of the other songs stand out as much.
C'est correct. Mais dans l'genre, y s'est fait mieux autant avant qu'après.
Solid 3.5
Yeah, I get it yeah
That was quick...just screaming and banging under 30 mins
Okay.
Some good punk rock in here. I enjoyed a few songs, fits for time and place. Somewhat confused by the decision to use a compilation album on this list.
Weird choice here - it’s a compilation of hits. Some are great, some are ok. I guess I’m not so much into the hives as I used to.
3 – War okay / Interessant 👌 Solides Album, einige gute Momente oder Ideen. Vielleicht nichts, was ich nochmal hören würde, aber spannend zu kennen.
Fun, punchy, garage rock with some undeniable bangers, but you've heard one song you've heard them all. Sounds a bit like every advert from 2002-2005. 6.8/10
A fairly pointless release presumably to take advantage of recent success in a different market. It combines tracks from an EP and their first 2 albums, the second of which was released just 18 months earlier, the last single of which was released the month before this compilation! So I love The Hives, but I take umbrage with this release. They're a fantastic live band and they've consistently been releasing great music throughout their career; energetic and raucous garage rock, wearing matching jewel encrusted suits. It isn't doing anything particularly new or innovative, but it's tons of fun... especially live... I implore you to go and see them if you haven't. As for this album, it's a great collection of songs, but I wont listen to it again, I'll just listen to the EP and two albums that it's derived from and wonder why one of those wasn't selected instead.
Fun compilation, the hits are here, it's easy to get to and it doesn't take a lot of time. Will reccomend.
Some catchy songs. But all sounds a bit the same and fairly annoying. Stand out songs - Hate to say i told you so, the hives are law to are crime
399/1001
Strange choice to put a compilation album on this list, and even stranger still that all 12 songs sound exactly the same. I like the music, but it was just far too repetitive.
Your New Favourite Band Another album with great memories attached, when they seemed to be playing at every festival we went to. I must have seen them about 5 times between 2002 and 2006. In the main it is very enjoyable garage rock revival music - stripped down to its bare bones, tempo set at 136bpm, guitars cranked up and all delivered with great gusto and conviction. However the song quality is undoubtedly uneven - for the fantastic songs like I Hate To Say I Told You So, Main Offender, Here We Go Again, Hail Hail Spit N’ Drool and The Hives are Law, You are Crime (superb title) there are songs like Untutored Youth, Outsmarted, Mad Man, A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T and Automatic Schmuck which, despite the spirit behind them, feel a bit by the numbers. It’s interesting to think about in comparison to Permission to Land, both albums very much of their time, and both albums solidly in their specific lanes, but I think the advantage of PTL is that they can at least go from rocker to ballad, whereas The Hives can only really go from fast garage rock to slightly faster garage rock or slightly slower garage rock, and don’t quite have the pop chops of The Darkness. Anyway I’d come back for a nice hit of thrashy nostalgia, it’s a fun album, but it's definitely of mixed quality, and sticking the best songs from here and from the next two albums would probably be a better listen. I think that makes this a solid 3. 👔👔👔 Playlist submission: Hate to Say I Told You So
If they played a little more faster and the singing was more slurred this would've been a 5 star.
Jumps out at you right away with "Hate to Say I told You So"... nice. The rest is pretty good. I would hesitate to call this Punk, but it's pretty close. Not a huge punk fan, as it gets old pretty quickly for me. I can only handle so much screaming.
This kicks ass for a couple songs at a time, but it's tedious to listen to the whole thing. Don't love that this is a compilation album, either. Though I have a soft spot for early 2000's post-punk garage rock, I don't need to come back to this one.
A few mega singles (Hate to say…, Main Offender, Die All Right), a lot of workmanlike garage punk, but a lot of fun when it works
Not a fan of Punk rock music, but this album was okay
These fellows are not, as the cool kids would say, my "new favorite band".
i love The Hives, but I hate the idea of a compilation album on this list.
6/10
Day543 - i think compilations or greatest hits albums are kinda cheating but since i have no idea any of their songs i was kinda digging their sound.
Super!
I was stuck on this one for awhile cause this is a band that immediately makes me think of my childhood and Weird Al (for the record, I like Al’s polka cover more than the actual song). And this album is a STAPLE of early 2000s radio rock. This album is as radio friendly as it gets. And I think that in itself is what holds this band back from being an iconic classic band. Their sound is so homogenous with the radio rock sound at the time that it feels completely watered down. Like the album as a whole is super short but when you listen to it and you hear the same distortion on the guitars and the same sound on every single song, it makes the albums a whole feel like a chore. When I was a kid I would’ve told you that this is a classic album. But as an adult with this album being out for over 20 years I can say it hasn’t aged gracefully and sadly it becomes less and less relevant every year. Still, for a band with seemingly no edge, super squeaky clean production and sound, that first track is an absolute banger.
Das albom fätzt scho rächt. Velecht aber au fascht e chli fescht. För so musig mues einersiits t luune stemme, anderersiits darfs halt au ned z Extrem si. Das extreme esch halt leider bi gwössne Songs de Fall. Wenn aber s Stemmig chli passt fätzed desi aber schön ine ond es esch huere geil. "Hate to say I told you so" esch jo au met abstand s berüemtischte was voll senn macht wells halt äbe grad gnue fätzt.
Commercially viable predictable early 2000's rock. It's fine but nothing special. Should knock it to 2 stars for being a compilation but that's a little harsh.
Good, punk edged, fun rock.
There are a few songs on here I'd consider genuinely fucking amazing but I'd also like to point out that this isn't even an album. Like 1001 albums, hello???? I'm assuming they think this is the best work in their discography which gives me a little less hope bc there are still some weaker tracks. Not bad tracks, but a little more average than everything else.
Solid record. Not my favorite of em, but its okay.
just alright, not really my thing. little too punk vocals for my taste, and the song Supply and Demand had an unpleasant alarm noise partway through.
Never my favourite. Always good energy.
Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: ⚫🪖🟥 Production: 🤔😐👍 Music: 🎸🎤🧱 Rating: 🐝🐝🐝/5
it's got some bangers
#621. If you guys were allowed to pick greatest hits albums all along, they why have we been listening to so many with only maybe one good song on it for so many other artists? 3/5: acceptable
Starts off fun and energetic, but kind of wears on you by the end.
not an actual album... but some good songs, barely a 3 though
Pretty good riff based punk/rock.
I like these guys, never heard Swedish punk
Not really
Nice little modern punk album. 3.5
Some skilled musicianship put to use in largely unmemorable songs. It was easy to see The Hives as a next generation Sex Pistols back in 2001, but now that a whole 'nother generation has passed, they really come off the worse for the comparison, possibly due to a sense they became a phenomenon more manufactured than organic. To be sure, there are probably no songs here that you WON'T like. But 25 years later, there are also no songs we're still rocking to in the same way as we rock to "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the U.K." nearly 50 years after they came into existence.
Like it 3/5
🎧Pretty good stuff. I grew up loving Here We Go Again.
This album is Punk in the same way that a mcdonald's Filet-O-Fish fish sandwich is seafood. Fun, fast, short. All good traits. But if that's what you're looking for, put on The Strokes or White stripes.
Like another reviewer said, its disappointing that they included this compilation album on the list. Could have put one of their actual albums on it. 3 stars though.
Entertaining.
Cheap punk
Pretty good for British rock. 3.5 stars
Fortunately enough, not my favorite band.
Good album
Good energy and not very long which made it pretty fun to listen to. Decent album
They really overestimated how much I’d like this album. It was fun though. I was close to giving it a 4.
Enjoyed it. One of those turn of the century (god I feel old) punk-ish / abrasive rock revival bands. Like The Strokes or Jet. Missed this when it was new, but I totally would have picked up a copy on CD if Borders had this in the 2 for $20 bin. 3.5⭐️ rounding down
Calm down guys
Don't understand the hate (or at least ambivalence) about this band, they're perfectly fine garage punk. It's basically the same song over and over but it works. They're not exactly the White Stripes, just adequate and good for running to.
I enjoyed the album, lots of great energy, but a bit one note with nothing particularly ear catching going on.
So much of this 'bands that felt important in the 00's' on this here list. At least the Hives are fun as heck
Hardly
allt í fína. þarf ekki meira.
Fun album. Super short, only 28 minutes long for 12 tracks
ist mir insgesamt dann doch zu "brit"ish
Compilation album? Again? Bad list, bad.
There is some good stuff on here but overall it’s just mid
It's fine. A little one-note. You may like it more if you have a high tolerance for spitty, screamy singing.
Thoughts before listening: Swedish garage punk band from the 00s. I like these guys although I don't think this was their big hit album (at least not in the US) so I'm surprised this made the book. Review: Nevermind..."Hate to Say I Told You So" is on here. Thats the hit and its a great song that instantly brings back nostalgic memories. It seems this album is actually a compilation pulling from multiple Hives records including the one I know Veni Vidi Vicious. The Hives were adjacent to the pop-punk I listened to around this same time although they brought a certain European vibe that set them apart from the Warped Tour crowd. In fact, they were closer in sound to the White Stripes and Strokes than Blink-182. Not groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly fun. 3-stars
Kind of cool.
Pretty rockin'. Hate To Say I Told You So is an '00's radio classic, the rest are alright. A low 3.
Pretty hungover listen so didn’t vibe with me too much. But enough here to warrant a re-listen at some point.
12 temas y 28 minutos, no hace falta más. "Hate to say I told you so" y "Untutored youth" se quedan. Tengo que escuchar más de ellos.
Enjoyable punk!
Random thoughts: * Has a band got as much out of one absolutely rocking song as The Hives have with "Hate To Say I Told You So"? * They will always be on the Mount Rushmore of the 2000s garage rock come back. Are they the Teddy Roosevelt? * The bass player on this album is Dr. Matt Destruction! No wonder they went nuclear. I'm going to adopt that as my new drunk nickname. * Dr. Matt Destruction just completely annihilates that bass line in the middle of the song!
Not sure about picking a compilation album for this but whatever the hives are good
Nja.
Energetic and fun, but they are not my new favorite band.
I really like the first song on this album. After that, the album kept playing, and I would look up occasionally and be surprised that the track had changed because most of the songs on this album sound roughly the same. The early 2000s is a bit over-represented on this list, and this album is yet another example. It's not bad, but it doesn't belong here either 3/5
Surprisingly okay
The Hives are great and these songs are fun and enjoyable. The rating is because for some reason a compilation album is included on this list instead of their actual albums like Tyrannosaurus Hives, Veni Vidi Vicious??
mhmh goood i like it
3.2 Surprising entrant from what I view as a one hit wonder. Just a pretty mid-tier garage band, but then I view the entire genre as pretty mid tbh.
Head banging good!
A little short but good jams. 3/5
Starts strong with that one song we all know and then becomes fine. At least it’s short.
first listen there's some classic songs here, but it's short and i object strongly to compilations
Fun frantic punk energy.
I normally do not care for the lo-first recording strategy of garage bands, this band uses it in a way that doesn't cover up the talent of the musicians. No feedback for the sake of feedback. It is mostly used on the vocals, which makes me wonder if the singer has a voice, but overall not bad.
Energizing. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but it sounds fresh and catchy
I enjoyed it for sure but again, how did this make the cut? Recency bias when the list was out? Hurray that it was under 30 minutes though
The title of this comp' is a lie, I have no idea why a compilation is on this list and Pelle's voice kind of annoys me... but there's still a solid lot of rockers here so yeah, it was good.
I don't think this is my new favorite band, but the album was alright.
Always gonna give it to The Hives, they're confident. My New Favourite Band? Maybe not, but damn, look at them. Tight, right amount of angry, but not entirely special, if you ask me.
I bought this album in 2001 on the strength of Hate To Say I Told You So, but would have struggled to name another track on it. After re-listening to it in full for the first time in years, I quite enjoyed it but I think that’s still the only song I’m likely to keep playing.
Fun, frivolous and doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Energy. Energy. Energy. Wiggle. Wiggle. Wiggle. Wiggle.
Flash in a pan with a tremendous energy that masks a bit of silliness.
I did own the cd and loved them live but the album is all pretty much one song over and over. A good song though!
Nice energy but all felt the same towards the end
bien, aunque bastante ruidoso
3.5
I like the last track
This is a compilation of the Hives first two albums. I thought compilations weren't allowed in this book. Everyone knows I Hate to Say I Told You So, though it does not like the Hives really do hate to say they told us so. It turns out the Hives are not my new favo(u)rite new band. I appreciate what they brought to the early 2000's in the form of a post-punk sound. My issue is the sound is not varied on this album. Compilations shouldn't be in this book, though I can see why The Vines would be.
Hate to say it but told you so is an undeniable banger. But even over a run time of 28 minutes the Stooges shtick gets tired. And this is a compilation too. Generous 3
Nice upbeat rock beat. I enjoyed it Personal notes: 3/5
Amamzing this Output. But Compilation is not an album, right?
Very solid garage rock. This was an enjoyable listen
