Nice bops
This albums is the perfect example for an album where I would say there is nothing distinctly bad or wrong about it, but nothing clicked with me at the same time. It’s completely inoffensive. To me it feels when you’ve heard one you’ve heard them all. This does not mean I think the album has no value, the instrumentals are all very tight and Dusty sounds amazing on all of the songs. I just think maybe this style of soul/ R&B maybe doesn’t always work for me.
Great voice, otherwise I was uninterested
Great music to clean your car to, although I don't remember a single song. You should consider TPE or rubber car mats, the elements are kinder to them... I had to put my mangy manufacturer carpet mats out to pasture. The album is inoffensive and nice sounding, I give it a "will listen to when I deep clean my car again"/5.
do you think that because "every day [she had] to cry", she is now "all cried out"? this was an album that sounded really cool and it is also an album i would have liked a lot more if she weren't so goddamn whiny.
I’d long heard the name Dusty Springfield but did not realize she was neither a man nor a country singer. Oops. Blue-eyed soul doesn’t jive with me much outside of some Adele (and even that is less appealing nowadays). Dusty’s voice just isn’t stunning like Adele, and there are no vocal highs that reeled me in.
Very proto-Adele in that this is a very talented singer making music about which I could not be arsed to care in the slightest. “Son of a Preacher Man” came later, of course, but I don’t feel anything from the performances on this particular album. It just feels like a very good singer who was given a list of songs to sing, hit some notes, and then went home. I could hear the same thing at a karaoke bar. 2 stars for being pleasant enough.
Looks like a bargain bin record that I’d quickly flip past, but I was hoping it’d impress and teach me to give those crusty ‘ol $3 records a chance. It wasn’t bad, a couple of goodies (You Don’t Own Me is iconic, Don’t You Know is fired up soul) But certainly some duds, the majority of these aren’t her songs, and it feels like a collection of random songs not a cohesive album. Listening to this on my bathroom fan’s Bluetooth-enabled speaker was great though. Excellent taking a shower and getting ready music.
I don’t like it, I’d rather a more raw and more louder type of sound
the bewildering britishness of robert dimery's 1001 albums you must hear before you die fascinates me endlessly to include an entry such as this, for this album is wholly unremarkable. it's dusty springfield's middling debut cover album of her favourite tracks, primarily black soul/pop singers, delivered to a british audience. it is not a strong showcase of her capabilities as a singer and it did not even sell exceptionally well either. the producer johnny franz was particularly inspired by phil spector's wall of sound style as suffered previously which to me seems like a blight across albums of this era.
Dusty Springfield had one hell of a voice. Kinda was suprised how many songs on here I do actually recognize, because y'know, its a covers album. That said being a cover album prompts the question: why THESE songs? Dusty's voice is the highlight of this but I feel like most of these songs ultimately sound better in their original forms, and don't give Dusty enough chance to shine. "You don't own me" for instance, is a great song, but am I ever listening to this version over the stunning Lesley Gore version? I don't really think so. There's also a lot to say about the Elvis-like implications of so much of these covers being from black artists and are here being covered by a White English Woman in the 1960s. So it puts me at a crossroads: It sounds good, but it doesn't make me feel all that good and I can't imagine listening to a lot of this again. There's a Dusty album I know is much better already on this list, but I still think there's other albums of her that are contenders to be on here before this one.
I’m in the minority here, but dusty is not my favourite diva. It took me years to work out why. She can sing, she sings great songs, her voice generally suits the song. But someone else has always done a better version. There’s something missing in a dusty song that gets hidden in her story. There’s always a better version of the song. She only needs one album, if that, and this isn’t a must hear. Dusty in Memphis is the one. 2.5 rounded down because those who don’t want me to be right but know I am will likely try and shout me down. There’s always a better version.
Gute Laune, kann man mal hören aber mir einfach bissi zu alt backen. Haut mich jetzt nicht von hocker
polnud minu maitse aga muusika poolest hea
I'm afraid we need some Pet Shop Boys bleeps and bloops to make this better. 2/5
Dusty Springfield is a good singer, but this album consists of incredibly generic early 60s covers. I have no idea why this album should be included in the list. 2⭐️
My enthusiasm for this album was low going in and then wham! Mama Said! Hey I like this song, this is a Dusty song? No, it's not. And the others aren't, either. She's a good singer, singing a collection of good songs, on an appropriate length album, but it's all just kinda there. Nothing really special here, she doesn't own any of the songs after doing them (despite doing a good job) and there's nothing to tie me here. Of the songs I like, I'll take hers or the originals, no biggie. Of the fodder? Well, fodder. I lost interest.
Great voice, singing an almost nauseatingly inoffensive album of cover versions.
нічого особливого, але натрапила на кілька знайомих пісень, які люблять використовувати як саундтреки
I feel kind of bad giving this one a lower score since Dusty Springfield is only the ninth solo female artist I've gotten, but I honestly wouldn't feel right rating such an unremarkable covers album higher than two stars. A Girl Called Dusty surely isn't awful, but I have no idea what it's doing here – there's not a single original on the LP (unless you want to include "Nothing," which doesn't appear to have been previously recorded by another artist) and Dusty generally doesn't make up for that with powerhouse vocals or particularly exceptional arrangements. Even my highlight picks were kind of arbitrary – I only mildly preferred them to the other tracks. Highlights: You Don't Own Me, When the Love Light Stars Shining thru His Eyes, Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa, Anyone Who Had a Heart, Don't You Know
Album #7 - A Girl Called Dusty - Dusty Springfield Genre (according to Wikipedia): Pop Singles?: No. Have you heard any songs from this album or artist before?: I have listened to this album once before. I have also listened to Dusty in Memphis before too. Thoughts?: Most, if not all, of these songs are covers done by other artists. With that in mind, I’m unsure as to why this album is on the list. Perhaps a listen will answer my questions. The arrangements are nice and her voice is lovely. She has the range and the pipes. I’m struggling to understand what makes this album worthy on the list. Maybe because of Springfield’s impact? I still don’t understand what makes this album a part of the list. Very underwhelming. Favorite songs: Wishin’ and Hopin’ As a writer, what can you use this music for when honing your craft?: Vintage oldies scenes, I suppose. File correlations: File #002: Heaven’s Helpers. Sparingly.
The thing is, I think this is good and her voice is fantastic but I can't get that excited about an album full of covers of standards. it's a high two or a low three on a more charitable day.
Lots of hits. Great voice. Knew 80% of those songs. Just nothing I would ever listen to. 2.75.
Would be really cool if I was 70 years old
Dusty has a great voice, but this album is mainly cover songs, which isn’t groundbreaking.
I liked this ok, I just felt it could have been replaced by a lot of other albums of around the same time. Why isn't there any Chuck Berry on this list?
ну эээ, 60-е
aight
Dusty Springfield of the 60s, much like Linda Ronstadt of the 70s and 80s. This is pretty much life before Karaoke bars, where if you had a good singing voice, you could get a record contract, and fill up an album full of cover songs.
Unsurprisingly, this isn't for me. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆ (4/10)
Not bad! First listening to a full record.
La calidad atenta contra muchas exigencias de hoy, pero se salva
Not my favorite. Felt like an album full of covers. Not sure if there were any originals.
Good voice but terribly boring songs. Not great.
disappointing for the "big name"....
60s pop cheese. Momo Told Me is a good one, but overall this is not for me.
Fine but lowkey everything sounded similar
Meh. Too many covers. Got too frothy in the second half. The first few tracks were ok
A cover album on this list pisses me off Best Song: You Don't Own Me Rating: 4.0/10 Stars: 2
Well, never thought I would listen to a full album of Dusty Springfield , but here we are. Knowing her primarily from "Son of a Preacher Man" and her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys decades later, I didn't have high hopes. Apart from that, crooners and '50s singers aren't exactly my thing. And this is exactly as boring and dreadful as I had imagined. Nearly (?) all songs are covers, of which the originals are either better, or better done by other artists. So, why being included in this list? Because she brought a soulful, American R&B vocal style to the UK at a time when that was rare? Because she was one of the first UK-based R&B singers? Her voice is at times touching ("My Colouring Book") and soulful ("Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow") or jazzy ("Don't You Know") but overall, I'm not very impressed. 2/5
Eh, it was fine. Nothing really stood out for me. I've definitely heard better versions of many of these songs.
Not terrible but some songs feel dated and corny
Great for its time and what it was, not for me though
some cool tracks, but overall a boring compilation album
This is a fine album all in all. Dusty has a great voice there is no denying that. But holy-dated-music-Batman, was this sound ever groundbreaking? And its mostly covers.
Boooooooooring. 2/5
It's fine. But probably not for me
I guess we can get these soul/pop cover albums out of the way. It’s sung well enough but sounds dated even by 60s standards. I can’t imagine I’ll revisit this album. Not sure it belongs on this list over other albums that have been removed. It’s still listenable, especially the jazz music.
Très générique. Pas mauvais mais pas mémorable.
Wow, the first gentrified album! She’s a fine vocalist, but no album full of covers is one we must listen to before we die. Also I’m sure this was outdated even in 1964.
I know I just gave willie nelson’s stardust 5 stars but enough with cover song albums..
I was familiar with quite a few songs…surprisingly. Not my style of music, but there were some catchy tunes
mid
Lots of covers. I like the originals/other versions better. Why is this on the list? I am indifferent.
at least she doesn't have annoying vibrato
Pop soul, nice voice, quite simple but efective. I may like It as background music. 2 stars.
tj la meme chose.........
Meh
Never been a fan of this era of music, but certainly I'd rather listen to the artists she's inspired by than this album. It's not bad, just a little uninteresting, one-note and forgettable. To be fair, that's 20% of the albums on this list.
She’s a good singer, but the covers aren’t very remarkable or groundbreaking compared to the originals. Wouldn’t consider this a “must hear” album.
I don’t have a whole lot to say here… It was very repetitive but I actually felt like that was the strength of the album Almost every song was at least somewhat enjoyable so while none of them were memorable, none of them were particularly bad either The vibes were those of chilling at the beach at sunset so credit to her for crafting an album that would be awesome for that Favorites: None Honorable Mentions: Mama Said, You Don’t Own Me (Cover), Summer is Over
More of the same. Didn't take note of any particular songs, and before I knew it Spotify began playing "Son of a Preacher Man" and the album was over.
This one is a very weird addition to 1001 albums, like really? Nothing against her at all, she definitely has pipes, however this seems already very outdated in terms of when this was released and lacking any authenticity or originality. Are you telling me Dusty's debut is on par with what Nina Simone was dropping at the same time? I don't think so… However, production is alright there are some nice songs, but I don't see wanting to go back to this record or even re-listen to it after I did once this morning, currently thinking 2.5/5.0 - a very average record, not bad at all but nothing to die for either.
Not really my kind of thing but it was cool to be transported back in time for a bit I guess
Not memorable
Apparently Dusty is British. The golden age of Brits stealing American soul and selling it right back to us. But they do it pretty well. This is a solid debut solo album. A lot of hits. The tracklist has several covers and Dusty’s version of some of these might very well be the definitive one. Do Re Mi really showed off a low timbre that I like about her voice. Wishin’ and Hopin’ was a bop in its day. I didn’t really care for the b-side but the final track, Summer is Over, was probably my favorite.
I thought it started out strong with Mama Said and You Don't Own Me, but overall not an album I will be replaying. If I'm looking for a motown/doo wop sound there are better choices out there. It was a fun enough listen though. Wishin' and Hopin' reminded me of Tech N9ne's Bout Ta' Bubble where he says "And drinkin' and smokin' and humpin' and likin' it" maybe it is a response to Dusty's advice that a woman must "Show him that you care just for him, Do the things he likes to do.. you won't get him thinkin' and prayin', wishin' and hopin'"
kinda forgettable, listened to in the uhaul to nyc
Nice voice and performance of these songs.
I saw 20 tracks and thought urgh ffs this is getting a max 3 stars. But then I read that 8 are bonus reissue tracks and it's really only 12 and thought okay maybe it can be a 4 star. Then I realised those 12 tracks don't include I only want to be with you and I thought ah well in that case it's 2 stars
it's okay. I found out they're all covers of 50s songs so that's why a lot of them are familiar, but there's nothing here that really wows me
Great voice held back by some very dated sounding songs and an overlong album. Tbh, I don't know if a cover album even belongs on this list, and that cost it points from me. I'll give Dusty another chance on another album or some singles in the future (You Don't Own Me is quite catchy), but this album is a miss. 2/5.
A couple catchy tunes here or there. It's fine, but didn't really stand out.
One of those 'this is the 60s' in any TV show/movie soundtracks ever. Generically generic!
momcore. Not totally impressed with it.
Just not my jams.
Wow that's some hair. It's not horrible but I have no clue why I would ever listen to this again
Sort of just had this in the background, so perhaps that wasn't the best environment for this album, but this thing took a WHILE before it got even somewhat interesting, and ended pretty soon after that. For a majority of the album, my main thought was shock that the voice was coming from a British white girl, and that it sounded nothing like Dusty's later albums, but otherwise the songs themselves were forgettable and repetitive. It finally started to either shape up or click in the final stretch, but the songs zoomed by so quick I didn't really process what I was listening to. Perhaps a more proper re-listen would give it the credit it deserves from me, but I don't get anything from this that I wouldn't most likely get from a different version of the songs here.
Man. Make this genre stop. 2/5
Dude can really sing. Idk why a cover album is on here tho
It’s not a bad album but was just uninteresting collection of songs, sorry Dusty
I am of mixed emotions about this album. The songs are all classics which I enjoy and Dusty is a great vocalist. The production quality is fantastic. Here is my quandary: I get why “Dusty in Memphis” was on the list as those songs were great and mostly original. However, every song on here was recorded by a black artist within three years, which kind of feels like she was re-recording them to profit from 1963s “white radio”. These songs aren’t “reinterpretations”, but rather almost exactly the same. An argument could be made that she was introducing black artists to white audiences, but I think the Shirelles and Supremes did just fine without her. I actually do like Dusty but for the first time I am not sure this album should be on the list…. 3 Stars: quality of talent/album 1 Star: historical influence
Interesting. This really provided me with a lens into "how did Adele come about" more than anything else. Perfectly fine. The "wall of sound" production style has always been lost on me. I just starts to grate on me after a bit, and I want to hear individual instruments. The production does nothing for her voice, which has always been tremendous. It's... fine?
Enthalten sind überwiegend Coverversionen bereits bekannter Songs, darunter „Wishin’ and Hopin’“, „Anyone Who Had a Heart“, „Will You Love Me Tomorrow“ und „When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes“.
Basically know nothing coming in on this one. Listening notes: -Wow what vocals! Amy Winehouse-level pipes. But much less interesting arrangement and lyrics. -Blue-eyed soul to the max. This could almost be a motown record if there wasn't a white woman on the cover (actually after writing this I listened to some Gladys Knight and the Supremes: they too have much more interesting arrangements) -Mockingbird--well this is annoying. one of the worst single tracks of this program -hopin' and wishin' ugh. this stuff stinks. -Whoops I got bored and didn't pay attention to the rest of the album. I don't feel bad about it. Then I listened again and basically the same thing happened. Review: She has absolutely incredible vocals, but they're wasted on mediocre songwriting and instrumentation. Totally forgettable at best. 2 stars.
Dusty had an incredible voice. A Brit exposed to soul and made an album covering a bunch of songs. Enjoyable but I’m not sure I understand why this is in here if it’s 40% Burt Bacharach
Not bad by all means, but perhaps unnecessary? Does not bring much. 5/10
A big complaint in modern music is that it's all derivative, all spawning from something that's been done before. This project has shown me that this isn't a new problem.
Hmm, some cool tunes but overall don't enjoy
Lovely voice, some interesting arrangements, and a whole lot of songs that were appropriated, which tarnishes my ability to just enjoy the darn thing.
So many songs pining over men who treated them like shit.
This is fine, but it’s mostly just covers. Also feels older than ‘64. Dusty In Memphis was better. Mama Said and You Don’t Own Me were probably my favorites.
4/10 While I enjoyed this as a background listen, I find it quite an odd inclusion on this list. A collection of songs that weren’t written by the artist and, in every case that I could find, had been released by a different artist prior to this album being released. There also wasn’t much to differentiate these from the originals either. To be fair, that was just part of the way things were done at the time, but it hardly screams ‘must listen example of the art form’ to me. Dusty obviously has a lovely voice and when she got to stretch it out a bit it was really enjoyable to listen to, but I did find there were a few too many bland songs that didn’t really do a lot for me. I’ll happily listen to a few of these tracks again in the future on a playlist, but I doubt I’ll be actively seeking them out or bothering with the full album again in a hurry. Mama Said - I do like the vocal melody on this. It’s a nice little pop song. You Don’t Own Me - I really like the transition between the brooding versus and the more uplifting chorus. Another good little song. Do Re Mi - Another nice pop song. It’s like the way the bass moves the track around and it’s got a good groove. When The Love Starts Shining Thru His Eyes - In the chorus, it felt a bit like the lyrics had been written and then forced into the song despite the fact that they didn’t quite scan properly. OK, but not really interesting. My Colouring Book - This was a bit boring. Mockingbird - This was also a bit boring. Didn’t do a great deal. Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa - This was a bit more interesting, but I do feel like I’ve heard a lot of songs that sound quite similar to this but do it better. Nothing - Better groove to this one and she’s got the chance to showcase her vocal control a bit more. I did like this, but again it did remind me of something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Anyone Who Had A Heart - Nice enough. Again, a bit boring. Will You Love Me Tomorrow - This one’s a bit of a classic. Great tune, but we’re also going to hear it later in this project sung by the original composer, so… Wishin’ And Hopin’ - Another nice pop song but a bit bland. Don’t You Know - Strong closer. A good groove and she got to really work her voice on this one.

Not great
Decent album but I don’t think I would listen again
2 Stars (5/15)
This was ok...I have heard the few BIG hits she had. Always liked her voice. I like the influence of "black music" that she wanted to explore more when she was in the pop group of her earlier career, pre this debut album. I likely wouldn't listen again but do not hate it. The remaster has really brought the mix alive.
Some great songs on here I've heard sampled and played in movies.
I knew Dusty's hits. She's fine. I'm not sure I needed to hear everything else before I died. LOL, holy shit, I didn't realize the version of Mockingbird they sing in Dumb and Dumber came from Dusty Springfield.
decent selection of covers that are only decent because dusty has a nice voice. that mockingbird song was just terrible. Not a bad album but nothing special
That's odd.
A not for me album all the way through. Not saying it's bad, just not to my taste
snooze…
I figure I'm in the minority on this, but I just don't like her voice. I guess it was kind of a novelty to have a British woman singing American R&B and soul music and belting wildly in 1964, but it sounds hacky as fuck to my ears.
..
Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar? Well in mama said you can! I rate this song a ⭐. Really don't recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar? Well in you don't own me you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐. I don't recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar? Well in Wishin' and Hopin' you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐ I don't really recommend this song.
I don't like this because her voice is annoying and the lyrics and weird. I would not recommend this to someone else because I don't think they would like it. I give this a solid 2 stars.
Why is she posing like that on the cover? "Mama Said" was pretty good. I didn't like the old feel to it but other then that is was pretty good. "You Don't Own Me" was better in my opinion, I don't really know why but it sounded better than the other one. "Wishin' and Hopin'" I've heard before. Maybe on the radio when my dad's cleaning. It was probolbly my favorite but only because i've heard it before. Overall i'd give this album 3 stars because it was nothing special but it wasn't bad. I wouldn't recomend this album to anyone because it's sort of boring and plain.
nothing super special but pleasant enough. Dusty has a good voice and does the songs covered here justice. feels more like a full album than most stuff in this vein from around the time, so that's a plus deserves to be one of the 1001? maybe
This album has a very 50s feel even though it came out in 1964. It's also an album of just covers so I don't understand how this is considered so life changing as to include it in a list of albums to hear before I die. It's not bad - just fairly bland.
Some fun classics, great voice, but not for me
Dusty ol Dusty
This is a fine listen but it's not a noteworthy album in my opinion. I was assigned some of Dusty's later work on this site and much more impressed by that. Yes she has a unique voice and this album does showcase it, but it's all standards and I feel like her district style is only starting to take it's fullest form here. Overall I left just feeling 'meh' about it
I do like me some old 60s country. A couple of good ones, but overall no standouts.
Good voice, but it is an album of covers. Standout songs: You Dont Own Me Mockingbird.
I mean it was ok, just another “classic” album.
Dusty's vocals are great as usual, but I'm missing something original from this album.
She’s the British female version of Pat Boone or Elvis Presley. Nice voice and unoriginal.
Gosh, I dunno. A valiant vocal effort, but compared to other soul singers of the time, does Dusty make the cut?
Heard some songs from Dusty before. This album though? Eh not really interesting to me 2/5
Old style women music, knew some songs
Reminds me of doo wop style. No song stuck out
Tällä vosullahan on muutama aika kivakin laulu mut ei osunut tähän plattaan. Tämmöstä kevyttä 60luvun minihame höttötöttöö...
Sorry, but it's just so not my jam. I won't give it one because it's well produced and it does what it wants to with skill, but what it does is bloody awful.
As a pedant, I must say that "Do Re Mi" doesn't work if you sing it that way. Also "empty" and "gone" aren't colours. What's wrong Dusty, you ran out of stereotypes? Maybe I just wasn't enjoying myself enough to get over the niggles. Or maybe I don't respect the youth.
Extremely dated. Tickles 0% of my fancy.
Good covers but quite conventional
Interesting Dusty’s debut album was all covers and many of them were recent hits for others. It seems most artists these days do not put out covers until much later in their career. That being said, she has an incredible voice and it resonates decades later. Although, this album sounds like it would have been released much earlier then the mid-60’s.
It somehow sounds like the whole 50s music in a nutshell. I don't know, it's not bad, just samey.
i get why this is on here - im sure it’s very important to music history while it’s not horrible to listen to, i don’t think this holds up very well as an album luckily for dusty (and her estate) it does hold up as music for commercials, movies, and hip hop samples when trying to invoke nostalgia
Listen, this isn’t devoid of musical value. It sounds so much like a parody of the 50s that I can’t tell if that makes it a good love letter or if it’s an insult to how easy it is to make music that sounds like this. I understand that it was common for artists to cover other artists all over the place, but there’s not a single song on here that Dusty is either the original songwriter or even performer of. For that reason alone I don’t think this deserves to be on this list. Easy listening, great vocalist, but artistically next to nothing of value. I want to slap this with a 1 but I think that’s too harsh, this 2 is a 1.5. That mockingbird cover was doodoo.
The early 60s ballad-y stuff does not hit the spot for me. I kept looking at the track list and thinking “there’s still this much left?” Each track was mercifully short (like 2-3 min)…but they just kept coming
A disconcerting album. For some reason I was fully expecting country western, but got some strange girl boss doo wop instead. It’s pretty dated with poor instrumentation, and certainly not as catchy as a lot of its contemporary stuff. Would not return to it.
The originals of the songs on this album all were better than Dusty’s covers. The only good song on this was her original "I Only Want to Be With You" wheixh she didn’t write. So at best it’s a 2 star for her original recording.
Coming from a white person: white people suck at making soul music.
If it’s just covers eh
Listening to an album a day really reveals some things about a guy’s taste, and a revelation for me (which I’m sure I’ve said at least twice so far) is that I don’t have a lot of patience for 60s/70s white person soul. There’s nothing BAD about this, and the production is pretty nice. But I don’t like to hear it, and that’s the main thing about music right?
The kind of 60s pop that I am just not a fan of. That said, her voice makes it slightly more tolerable, but still just not for me.
Traditionally good songs but not a style I particularly enjoy.
Astoundingly disappointing. Dusty has a great voice and saves a lot of this album, because most of these songs are straight junk. Scrapping the bottom of the crap barrel here, very few hightlights, this is only half an hour but it felt double that. I have listened to the bonus tracks too, and they are wayyyy better than the original LP
Second half was slow
Some good recordings, but ultimately forgettable.
Eh, pretty forgettable. Not really bad by any means but nothing stood out at all
great voice, but it’s a covers album. Knowing that takes away some of the enjoyment
i think its a little bloated and the songs sound waayyy too similar i liked dusty in memphis a lot more than this album
great singer
Upbeat and fun to listen to
.I don't know why but when I saw the album pop up I assumed it would be great. It's just kind of bland. It isn't awful but nothing really jumped out to me.
She has a great voice, there is great musicianship, well produced, but this album is clearly music business. Safe for middle America. Spoon full of sugar. Doesn't need to be on the list. A pleasant listen.
It's been forever since I was last recommended a true oldie. Glad to finally be given another one. I was pretty surprised to discover that a girl who goes by the name of Dusty Springfield was British rather than American. I'm guessing the stage name and appearance was meant to broaden her appeal to the American market, though it didn't really seem to pay off. Albums like these make me wish I had the book on hand as I have no idea what makes this album exceptional aside from being the debut work of an iconic musician. This beckons the question as to why this album is on here over the Beatles' debut. I'm not a diehard Please Please Me fan, but it's just curious to me that this is included over that album when they're so similar in content, yet so different in popularity and influence. I think I'm beginning to understand why Americans complain about the book having a strong English bias.
Hits good. Voice great. But rest boring.
Some great classic songs but just not enjoyable for me.
I like the song "Spooky" as much as the next person, but that track wasn't on this album - and I'm not excited to listen to a full album of covers.
Very average and not my thing
It was okay.
It was ahight
i dont need these covers. she can sing pretty good tho.
Seems like a weird album to include. These covers a fine, I guess, but she's not really bringing anything new to the table here.
I wonder why the creator of the book placed a cover album in their list. Her voice is cool, but, unfortunately, this is just antiquated material. Generic.
You Dont Own Me
I like the vibes but none of the songs really hit home
A nice, easy-listening record, though by no means ground breaking. Definitely not bad, but definitely not the greatest album of the 60s, let alone in the top 1001 of all time. Hard to rank as there is not a particularly bad song on the album. Best Tracks: - Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 4/10
Not my speed
Dusty has a great voice but these are mostly covers. And I like the originals better.
Nice historical recording but not for me in the short time listening to it.
I love Dusty Springfield’s voice but honestly this album didn’t do it for me.
It's fine, a little boring musically, but Dusty has a powerful voice and has no problem showing it off. She really is a powerhouse singer and can pull off many styles, but ultimately the album as a whole wasn't something I find myself needing to come back to. I'd recommend her to others.
An album full of banger covers, but covers nonetheless and none better than its original. It’s a 3 in enjoyability but without the creativity needed for original music, I can only give a 2
Nah
No me gusto
Not my cup of tea, just feels like typical '60s pop to me.
I know covers were popular when this was released, and I don’t hate covers, but this whole record is just a compilation of super popular songs. Sure, Dusty’s a good singer, but it just doesn’t really interest me I guess. The songs aren’t changed much at all or anything. It’s not bad, but it’s just not for me.
Taba bien, buenos covers y la voz de dusty springfield esta wena igual. 52/100
She's a very good singer, but most of her best songs were done better by her American counterparts.
Pretty boring
There’s no denying that Dusty Springfield is an incredible vocalist, and the instrumentation here is impressive. But as for my personal taste, this doesn’t do much for me. It’s not bad by any means; it just sounds like very typical 60s pop music.
Nice enough I suppose
Nothing really of note here. Sound is pretty dated and musically there's not much of interest. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)
It's not punk! This may be rated a bit higher because it's just something new from a project is supposed to give me something new, but hasn't been for the last couple weeks. She's a good singer, doing mostly covers. They aren't better than the originals, but they are whiter. The individual recordings are good, but they are mostly a worse version of the originals, and I don't want to paint all covers from this era as whitewashing, this is just that.
good voice
Not my cup of tea.
It was okay, but I don't think I'll be running back to it.
Not on Apple Music - can’t listen
She had a great voice, but this is a little too MOR for me. In a word, saccharine.
A fine time capsule to listen to when you're in an old style diner
Great voice and range but skipped a lot of them. The songs I liked the most were covered better by others imo. eg The Shirelles cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow is much stronger and neither hold a candle to Carol King’s
“Dusty! Oh my god! Great to see you! Look. Love you, mean it. You know that. But. Uh. Respectfully… what the fuck are you doing here, D? You really shouldn't be in here. Definitely not with this album, Dusty. You know that, right? No, obviously I won’t tell anyone. Just don’t let Keith Jarrett see you. The man tried to make Lou Reed suck on a lozenge earlier - most uptight jazz musician I’ve seen in my life, I swear. And you shouldn’t go out the back way when you leave, I saw Lesley Gore and Dionne Warwick out there earlier and those are two ladies you do NOT want to meet in a dark alley, babe, trust me… Hmm? No, Dusty, I am not on *their side*. I just feel bad for them, that’s all. The poor things didn’t even get on the list, either one of them. And you being in here with your bland little cover album… That has to sting. That’s all I’m saying. Look. Maybe you should head out, hmm? Come back with Dusty in Memphis? You’ll be so much happier with that album. If anyone says anything then you can just point to Son Of A Preacher Man, end of conversation. And you won’t have to worry about Lesley Gore shanking you with that one. Won’t that be better? Hmm? Oh, you will? Amazing! Looking forward to it! See you then, D! Give my love to Aretha when you see her! Okay, then. Bye now, Dusty! Call me!”
A good singing voice, but she didn't write any of these songs. I appreciate that she was popular, but I can't find much to praise here, although Will You Love Me Tomorrow and Wishing and Hoping are iconic.
женский блюз 3/10
Maso
2.5 not bad just not my thing
If I'm not mistaken, this is basically a cover album. Dusty herself basically seems like a Lana Del Rey of the 60s, so this album is kinda par for the course. It's not amazing, but it does have great vocal performances from Dusty. I would pick other Dusty Springfield albums to have on the list, however. Best Songs: You Don't Own Me, Summer Is Over, Can I Get A Witness Worst Songs: Mama Said, Nothing, Wishin And Hopin
Meh
Less good version of good songs
does anyone care
60's pop. nice voice
2,5
Some songs. Won’t listen again cover to cover.
Decent album. Thought I would like it more start to finish.
Dusty Springfield is so much better than this. Her singing is great, but this is just a collection of underwhelming covers I'll never listen to again.
Lyder egentlig godt, men holder sig under middel fordi den føles ret uessentiel… kunne bedre lide den sidste vi havde med Dusty
To each their own but I couldn’t get into it.
As with "Dusty in Memphis," a great voice. But instead of a parade of songwriters on this one, it's a parade of covers. Not sure this warrants a second inclusion for Dusty on the list.
Recognized a lot of these songs from working in a retail environment 20 years ago. 2.1
No particular opinion. Not great, but not bad. Recognizably boring? Sad Dusty, died to young. Had she come around in this era, she’d have been a superstar.
It's alright...After listening to Coat of Many Colors, I think my standard got a little too high. This one didnt reach it.
Not as refined as, and quite different from, her 1969 album Dusty in Memphis, which I liked. This one had an old school Doris Day feel to it - in terms of quality of the recording, song choice, style and subject matter. Far less enjoyable than In Memphis.
Yep, this sounds like music that was popular in the 60s.
I love her song "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" but her debut lacks the density that her top hits do. She still had a lot of growing to do, and her cover of "Wishin' And Hopin'" is low-key awful.
She has some memorable old time tunes (Mama Said, Mockingbird)....I just don't like this particular style of songbird.
She sure can sing, but I've never really got into the idea of a full album of standards. 2.5/5
Classic 60s sound. No auto-tune, just a woman singing along to some music. It's okay, but not something that would catch me for a longer time.
It was ok, but not really for me
It's hard for me to interpret this as anything but a whitewashing of soul and R&B music. The music feels flat, and the vocals lack substance.
Sleepy.
Well sung covers but not really my thing
First listen. Ok.
Eh.
meh
She has a good voice but too many covers and blah presentation brings this album down several notches. Didn't work for me.
I must not be aware of the significance of this album. I won't be giving it a second listen
This has no place on this list. A covers album by a 60s torch singer is really not one I need to listen to. Not 1 star dogshit, but absolutely 2 star dogshit.
Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 👖➕👖 Mix: 🔊🤫 Musik: 🤷♀️ Wertung: 👖(👖)/5
Better than expected but that's not saying much. Pretty voice but the 1960s style isn't my jam.
This is fine. She has a good voice and some of the tracks are decent versions of classics. I don't have much else to say about it and probably didn't need to hear it that much
First of all, this is damn near impossible to find on streaming. Secondly, great voice. I'd think Adele picked up on it here and there The songs range from okay to sappy... Like super. Ok album that goes way too long.
As with a lot of 60s artists, their debut is basically a lot of covers and while it all sounds really good, its still cover versions.
Ok
2nd of her albums that I've had, & I have to say the other left a better impression- while her version of "Son of a Preacher Man" (from the other album) is unbeatable, the covers on this album don't really stand out. "Mama Said" and "Will You [Still] Love Me Tomorrow" were both done better by The Shirelles. "You Don't Own Me" was done better by Lesley Gore (at age 17!) -- and later by Klaus Nomi (who put his own unique spin on it, & notably keeping the line "with other... BOYS!"). The rest of the tracks are unfamiliar & unremarkable, even as someone who grew up listening to "oldies" radio (when "oldies" still meant 1950s-1970s). Ironically, the only song I associate primarily w/ Dusty's version, "I Only Wanna Be With You," is only the extended reissue (I'd even meant to skip the "bonus" tracks but this was the first one). Welp.
Some bangers but one tone and dated
Nice voice but album is mostly covers of others' hits. Feels unoriginal to me.
Typisk 60-tall. Helt ok start. Liker my colouring book 🙂
Too short of songs and they all sound too similar
Love Dusty’s voice but not many of these songs landed with me. Maybe she’s got better albums?
40min of I’m just an innocent girl and you’re an evil man playing with my heart. Nothing stands out here musically.
The instrumentation in the background was really good, but I found the singer’s voice kind of insufferable. The songs all felt pretty generic as well.
I theoretically shouldn't have a problem with this music, I just don't like Dusty.
Nice and retro but not really something I’d listen to
ok
Not my Stryle
Fine mid-century pop rock
What an odd choice for a list of albums that everyone should hear before they die. First, its not available on apple music. Second, its all cover songs. Third, its an album out of time - Its mostly songs from the 50s recorded in the 60s. Dusty has a good voice, but its an ultimately forgettable album. 2/5
A DEBUT album of a former group singer, of nothing but covers, sung in a style a decade old, with verve and resonance. Virtuoso performance yes, but deserving of being on this list? Unsure. Lyrically very clear. 2 stars. Unlikely to listen to again.
I don't know. It's fine. The problem inherent in this list is that albums didn't develop until about 1966 so they were looking for something to represent this genre which was basically all singles. This would have been better served by a compilation album of singles, but they opted to not do that. So either stick to essential albums or don't.
Good singer, but way too 60's sounding for me.
Not my personal style and after a few songs I moved on.
I enjoyed this more than I expected to, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that this was all music pillaged from previous black artists.
This sure is a collection of songs. I don’t believe Dusty’s adding anything particularly noteworthy to these tracks that warrant a cover. Meaning the entire album is unwarranted. Some (a lot) of the covers are easily worse than the original so this album essential works to weaken her image. I don’t know why anyone thought it was a good idea to make this album and also to put on this list. Nothing here is egregiously offensive, just insanely and textbook derivative. I love her voice and suppose it isn’t the worst album for a debuting artist. 2/5
Not much to say. Didn't excite me, was boring. Favorite Track - My Colouring Book
A Girl Called Dusty I didn’t think this was particularly good. Obviously Dusty has a superb voice and I guess it must have been pretty unusual for a British female singer to sing in such a clearly soul influenced way in 1964. Clearly this was first step away from the Springfields to the more R’n’B style of later albums. And despite her voice never being less than great she feels a bit tentative and unsure throughout, and it lacks the control and subtlety and maturity of the Dusty in Memphis stuff a few years later. There are some good song choices on here, Mama Said, You Don’t Own Me, Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa, Anyone Who Had a Heart, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and Within’ & Hopin’ and some really not very good song choices at all, like Do Re Mi, My Colouring Book, Mockingbird and Nothing. Despite doing a good job on those good songs none of them approach anything like a definitive version, of which you feel she should be capable. However the big problem with all of it is the band, the arrangements and the production & sound all being uniformly bad. It sounds awful, thin and dull with that particularly distracting tom-tom sound. You realise how lucky the Beatles were to have George Martin and the engineers at Abbey Raod, and how good their early records sound compared to stuff like this (as well as the early Stones, Kinks etc records, which have some great songs but don’t sound anywhere as near as good as say A Hard Day’s Night or Beatles for Sale). I couldn’t find out much about the band but it’s the worst kind of early 60s BBC Light Jazz Lounge Pops band sound and playing, and it really doesn’t serve her or the songs well in any way. The saccharine string arrangements and insipid parping horns really are poor. I’m not that familiar with Definitely Dusty or Dusty in Memphis, apart from the well known songs, but I had a brief listen to a couple of tracks and it’s night and day in terms of playing, sound and also maturity in Dusty’s approach. Feel bad giving it 2 bearing in mind Dusty’s voice, but this is not a great record and she can’t rescue it from it’s musical mediocrity. ⭐⭐️
There's a couple recognizable songs on here, which were fun to listen to and get a 'face to the name' moment ('Mama Said', 'You Don't Own Me', 'Mockingbird' cover, 'Wishin' and Hopin''). Decent, fun early rock and roll but not something I'm likely to go back to with a few spots that failed to keep me engaged. 2/5
Generic '60s cover album. She's a good singer, but nothing outstanding here. Why is this here? I should keep track of how many times I've asked myself this, probably 10+ times so far. 2* for not being terrible.
ummmmmm nah im good
Solid R&B/soul mixed with pop standard vibes. Dusty’s take on some classic tunes doesn’t necessarily make them all her own, but her husky voice adds her own special blend of soul that contends with the best versions. Out of print and cobbled together on a Spotify playlist, I really wish there was a stereo mix of this, the mono tracks sound so flat. Mama Said, You Don’t Own Me, and Wishin’ and Hopin’ are such great songs, but they really don’t sound as punchy as they should be in mono. This album could be so much more if someone would give it a proper remastering.
Eh.
Definitely sounds aged these days but decent for its time. High 2.
Great songs and fine on its own, but it just made me want to listen to the versions of these songs that I like more
I’m happy I listened to it bc I’ve seen it referenced a ton but it’s not really my cup of tea
There were a few songs I liked but generally I’m not huge on 60s pop
Eh, all the covers are better as originals
A basic ass cover album? Don't think I've heard a bad version of You Don't own me before. Did the guy who wrote the book have a crush on the woman or what?
Great sound, a little vocal powerhouse
Springfield Springfield, it’s a hell of a gal!
Lovely tunes and vocals. Originally thought it was from the 50s but I found out it was from the 60s and they are covers.
Good to know
Didn't care for this one
Familiar with some of the songs, liked that they were short. Album was long though.
Rating: 1.6
My first impression was, wow Dusty is one of the greatest songwriters ever, but no, these are all covers. However, they are very good covers. Still we can’t be having cover albums on this list. It’s a nice, pleasant album 4.5/10
This starts off really strong, "Mama Said" is an absolute banger, and "You Don't Own Me" is great as well, but despite how fabulous of a voice Dusty has she can't save this from falling off a cliff. The middle section is a big nothing burger. Her cover version of "Will you Love Me Tomorrow" is miles away from the original, and there's just not much else to latch onto for me.
played it all day and it got kind of annoying
I started tuning it out after the first couple of songs. Did not keep me interested.
Recognizable tunes. Deserves to be on the list, but not my style.
Maybe exciting when it came out but all the same tbh
Songs were a little too on the nose. Good voice but all the songs were "I'm so sad because I (lost, don't have, want) a man"
Oh well, this isn’t on any US streaming services. I had to cobble this together from her first 2 US releases. Hope there wasn’t any changes on the tracks. I was gonna go through each song like I did my other review, but I’m not really fucking qualified to review this shit. It’s a fine album I guess, but I’m perplexed why I should care. Dusty Springfield sings some Motown hits. Ok. Whatever. Why is this on the list? 2/5
Pretty classic 60s pop. Dusty is an amazing singer. Suffers from all the classic 60s issues: it's a bunch of songs that were covered or written for other people, many of the songs feel incomplete (couple of choruses and hit the fade out), and just generally that in the early 60s an 'album' was just a bunch of songs to fill two sides of an LP. It's short though!
1/8/24. Good sampling of the 60s bluesy sound/British Invasion.
Not bad, just not for me
Not for me. It seemed pretty corny but I did like her voice.
Oisin luullut, että tää on 50-luvulta. Ihan kiva oli fiilistellä pari biisiä, mutta koko levyllistä ei kantanut.
Jee brittipopin kuningatar 60-luvulta jee jee wuu. Ei tietenkään listalla brittivinouman takia. 2/5
Some good 60s radio songs, but listening to it as an album has repetitive sounds and lyrics. Favorite songs: Mama said, When the love light starts shining through his eyes, Summer is Over 2/5
Its okay
AJ: amazing voice. “I just don’t know what to do with myself” is on a white stripes album. Very different here lol.
It succeeds as a group of short songs of a specific style of a certain decade, and she has the chops when it comes to performing impressive and pleasing pieces. The song structure and lyrical content are as expected of '60s radio music so it has enough content to entertain and is easy to listen to. Cool to hear how this might have influenced singers of later decades. As someone who grew up separate from music like this and is not particularly a fan, there is only a small range of songs that have a catchy melody or rhythm that suits my tastes. 5/10
Not my kind of music. Not terrible? But nah.
Pretty cute
Some 60s pop stuff. Not terrible but kinda boring.
if shitposting existed in the 60's people would be calling this white girl music
Sånn, då har eg hørt da og
Bot old fashioned
"Crayons ready? Very well, begin to colour me." I wasn't expecting to know any of these songs based off of the artist's name and the album, but I knew both of the first tracks! T1 - "Mama Said" Which is good, if not a little bit annoying when someone else can't help but to sing it, and T2- "You don't own me" which is a classic anthem for women's empowerment (playlist track). The rest of the album was a bit of a slog for me to get through, but nowhere near as bad as some of these other albums have proven to be. I will admit that my spotify version doesn't have all of the songs off of the album, and is missing T8, T12, T13, and T14. But i'm not really mad about their exclusion from the album. I can see why it was included in this list, I'm just not a huge fan. 2/5
A few songs almost got there, but overall nothing that moved the needle.
If you are going to force me to listen to an hour of a white woman singing mostly black covers her name better be Linda Ronstadt. This, with a few exceptions, just sucked.
1.6. Total meh for me.
