It's a cover album, which is well done, but I don't know if it needs to be on this list.
not for me

Did not absolutely hate this, but hearing this album once is enough
classics i didnt know i knew... but also oldey showtuney not really an hours worth of listening (post listening, iconic woman with iconic songs not on this album)
Apesar de bom, achei bem chatinho.
Not my style
Great voice, shit songs.
Not terrible but this album has no business being on this list
Not my cup of tea, hard to listen to while driving to work the artistic quality was ok just not something for a drive to work.
all right background music but it wasn't good
Actually a lot better than I thought it would be! She has a great ageless voice and style (much better than the ridiculous belters we have today such as Adele and Florid Florence; who will sound dated very soon). 3 great songs; You Don't Own Me, Anyone Who Had A Heart and When Will You Love Me Tomorrow. 1960's pop at its best. (what is the matter with me?) A high 2.
A bit on the boring obvious side. Nothing really reaches out and grabs me. Just kinda standard pop fair from the 60s. 2.5 stars
Basic 50s style oldies, covered in basic 60s style pop, with a voice that seems interchangeable. Good listen while cooking dinner with my 6yo
2.5 So… why is this an album I need to hear before I die? Yeah, Dusty has a nice voice and all, but this sounds like a really generic slice of the era - if not already a tad dated for 1964. And she didn’t even write any of the songs here, they’re all covers. I know that kind of thing wasn’t uncommon for the time, but my point being that I really couldn’t pinpoint any one thing here that I would consider particularly monumental or influential. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but this album helped me develop a smidge of respect for The Beatles. Even though I still don’t care for it, Rubber Soul released just a year after this and is not only made up of all original compositions, but its pacing and structure is lightyears ahead, almost to a modern degree - once again, making this album feel particularly dated, even from a contemporary perspective. And I totally get that some albums are just intended to be fun and not some kind of artistic masterpiece, and this album mostly succeeds in that regard - hence why I’m still going to rate this just a touch higher than Rubber Soul - but even then I wouldn’t call it overly enjoyable by any means. The only song that really jumped out to me was Every Day I Have to Cry (even though it’s hella dated), but I guess that track is a bonus track and wasn’t on the initial release, so I can’t really use it to the album’s credit here. As a whole, I feel like this exact kind of music exists in other, better forms - or at the very least, on albums that don’t require you to partially assemble the tracklist on Spotify because they didn’t get an official US release. One of the more forgettable albums for me on this list so far.
Some promising tracks, but overall not a super enjoyable listen.
I like her. Pretty decent album I knew a couple of songs.
Dated but impressive.
2.5
Sounded so dated, moreso than 1964. Recognised quite a few songs. Much preferred the Dusty in Memphis album we've had on this list. Didn't mind this, won't be going back, but inoffensive enough. Not really my thing
It was fine. Seems to just be good looking girl sings some elses songs...
Dne
Prima zang, maar cover album
Sorry not for me, it just sounds so dated
I was not able to find this record on Apple Music, so I played her 1966 record, "You don't have to say you love me." I listened to one song. Yeah, not my thing.
Well sung but remarkable album of covers. I know that was the standard for a lot of singers in the 60's breaking into the industry, but it still doesn't feel important in any way. Also, Mockingbird will always make me laugh because of Dumb & Dumber. 2/5
Fine. Early 60s big band brit pop.
Not my thing. Nothing too catchy.
One of those that probably sounded great in its day, but now seems a little too quaint to my ears. I love Dusty’s voice and personality that comes out in these songs, it’s definitely a step up from any bubble gum pop of the era, but there wasn’t anything in particular that made me feel like I’d return to it either.
Ok. So, four reasons I didn't make it to the end of this. 1) I'd heard enough, I took an educated guess there's not likely to be any songs that break the mould from what I'd heard. 2) I wasn't really enjoying it 3) I have a problem with 60s recordings of vocals, I think they all sound a bit shrill. Especially female voices, they just sound bad. And finally 4) the song from my grans funeral came on. She'd have loved this. I thought it was it was tedious though.
It’s alright, I just don’t find the voice particularly charming, and the music and sound is not unique for its era.
Listened Before? N This one was okay. Not really my cup of tea but it wasn't awful. I see that this was for the British release but in the US we only have the later US version with (according to wiki) a different track listing. Hopefully it's similar but I don't know. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: All Cried Out
This was quite a ride, because I had heard a lot of the songs in different arenas over the years, but never all on the one album and in a setting where I 'had' to listen to it as a result of this journey. "Mama Said", "All Cried Out", "He's Got Something"... all are songs I've heard. the you have the ones that have appeared in movies, like "Wishin' and Hopin'" and "You Don't Own Me" and of course the wonderful version by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in 'Dumb and Dumber' of "Mockingbird". In no way is this an album I would have listened to without this project. And it just isn't me, and the music and songs are not for me. But it was an interesting hour all the same.
1. Mama Said: pretty nice song, great vocals, upbeat instrumentals. 6/10 2. You Don't Own Me: alright song, good melody 7/10 3. Do Re Mi: cheesy song, this one aint it 3/10 4. WTLLSSTHE: vibey. Her vocals save it. 7/10 5. My Colouring Book: very nice song. Still cheesy but very chill. 7/10 6. Mockingbird: backing vocal ruins it. Bit too cheesy. 4/10 7. Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa: mwah bit indifferent bout this one, definitely has good parts. 5.5/10 8. Nothing: vocally very strong, best one so far. 7.5/10 9. Anyone Who Had A Heart: liked this one. 6.5/10. 10. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow: pretty generic song, vocally strong. 5.5/10 11. Wishin' And Hopin': not particularly interesting. 5/10. 12. Don't You Know: nice vibe, great instrumentals. 7/10 13. I Only Want To Be With You: decent track allround. 6/10 14. He's Got Something: bland song. 3/10 15. Every Day I Have To Cry: nice ending, liked this one. 7/10 16. Can I Get A Witness: great vocals. Good song. 7.5/10 17. All Cried Out: alright song, not too special. 5.5/10 18. I Wish I'd Never Loved You: good parts but nothing crazy. 6/10. 19. Once Upon A Time: again not great per se. 4.5/10 20. Summer Is Over: instrumentally really nice just not great overall. 5/10
Lovely voice, but dated covers
Blue-eyed soul has always kinda left a sour taste in my mouth. She’s obviously a talented singer, and the songs are good, but she’s doing the same thing that a lot of black groups were doing at the time, only she’s doing it worse imo. Give me a Motown record any day over this.
This was a pretty boring album. Nothing stood out between songs. Vocals sounded good but didn't keep my attention.
Fucking hell this is dated. It's actually a bit of a struggle, an hour of these super-oldies drudgefests was not what I needed this morning. 2/5.
Throughout the 1001, I've been trying to figure out "what is an album?". There's no doubt she's a great singer, but I do doubt this album constitutes a body of work.
Dusty is a great performer, but this selection of popular r&b and pop songs from the really sixties feels unremarkable from a modern standpoint.
..
No memorable songs.
Not my thing at all
Not my cup of tea
Not real big on covers. Unless it’s rare and amazing, like a Guns and Roses’ cover of Dylan. She has a nice voice and I really enjoyed I Only Want To Be With You and Summer Is Over. 2
Thought this was gonna be some country cause dusty is a real country like word but nah man it’s this… two stars
Very nostalgic of "oldies" that I've listened to. Never heard of her though. Different times I know, but girl sing about something other than men.
She certainly had a great voice, but this style was being done by plenty of others at the time. There are better, more creative examples with much better production.
Perusralleja aikakaudeltaan. Hyväntuulista, mut ei mitenkään sukkia pyörittelevää
great voice, songs are not worthy of it
VITTU ALL MY HOMIES VIHAA DUSTY..."I conjure you Sathan, Lucifer, Dentalion, that you go, now, unto [your subject's name], and that you do not let him (or her) to be at rest any manner of ways; neither sleeping, nor waking, nor eating, nor drinking, standing, nor sitting or dreaming... but that you cause his heart always, and in all places, to be fixed on my love." 😈😈😏 MITÄH VITTUA TU OEDES TARKOITTA??????????? VITTU kaksi tähteä... ihan hyvän kuuloisia... you dont own me....paras...
she didn’t write a single one and still picked bad songs. some of these songs have annoying ass lyrics, and the second half is just the same bland “oh no we broke up” song over and over. for a style with sick ass instrumentation (and that is the aspect of this album that is pretty consistently good - the band is nice af) that’s only purpose is to serve the singer you’d expect the singing to acc say something. i liked 24h from tulsa, anyone who had a heart and summer is over. the other ones i liked i just knew alr from better versions. this album says nothing and her voice gets kinda whiny at times (eg i only wanna be w you and once upon a time) like solid 2 tbh
Paras meolodia, trumpetit toitottaa.. Albumin vika kappale.. uskomaton.. "Summer is over".. Kult wibat trumpeteista.. Vahva 2 tähteä
On here Dusty does adequate justice to 12 cover songs. I have nothing negative to say, her voice is good, the arrangements are fine, there's just nothing extraordinary about the album as a whole, and even the book doesn't really clarify what about this is essential listening. Also, Harry and Lloyd's version of "Mockingbird" is superior. Fight me!
meh, some good songs but not my cup of tea
Just early 60s pop. Simple (and sometimes quite dumb) lyrics. Her voice is ok, if she got the right song.
Not very good, quite annoying, difficult to get through.
Meh
Sånn, då har eg hørt da og
60s soft pop really isn’t my thing and kinda made me feel like I was listening with my grandmother. Nothing really stood out for me sadly
Retro vibes. Not bad but I can't really see myself coming back to this. It's pretty chill and inoffensive, it just didn't grab me at all. Overall, this is the sort of stuff that I wouldn't mind as background music; there just weren't any hooks to make me want to seek this album out again.
old school country Surprisingly good for 1964 2.5
Dusty has a natural voice for these old tunes. Some good songs, some not so good. This is perfectly fine.
Meh.
Dusty had a great voice and some great hits but I think there are a lot of fillers here. It's ok to listen to but not really inspirational.
beautiful voice, just not my type of music
goddamn so boring I almost fell asleep; only positive aspect of the album is actually the voice of Ms. Springfield; all of the songs are very similiar to each other, typical pop music in a bad way
- Completamente esquecível
Not my type of music
It's ok. 5/10
A Girl Called Dusty is essentially a time capsule from 1964, covering the latest hits and singing originals from the best composers of the time. While Dusty is a great vocalist and I did enjoy a couple of the songs like 24 Hours From Tusla, it hasn't aged well today. Not something I would willingly listen to all again unless having a party with a Swinging Sixties theme. I was also heavily distracted when some of the songs were ingrained in my brain from pop culture like You Don't Own Me (Suicide Squad) and Mockingbird (Dumb and Dumber), which I was temporarily excited to find their sources, only to find out they were mostly covers.
A series of pop covers with strong vocals and a backing orchestra. Unfortunately, there isn't a single cover that I prefer to the original. I feel they lack composition, a disconnection between Dusty and her orchestra. Dusty definitely does give an impressive performance, but she doesn't sound as excited as the people she covers. The orchestra only serves to support Dusty... it doesn't work with her as it should. The back vocals also feel a little too artificial, not working with Dusty, and only serving to try to copy the covers. The two redeeming qualities are the two pop hits that I grew up with: "Wishin and Hopin" and "I Only Want to Be With You." It's not just bias, in "Wishin and Hopin", there is much better production sound and harmony between Dusty and her back vocals and orchestra, but still suffers from the same problems. "I Only Want to Be With You" is a perfect pop song with none of these issues, bringing forth Dusty to the limelight in a fast-paced powerful dance hit.
the album is just called dusy in spotify. thats weird. the year is right. its very very 60s though bleh.
Wasn’t on Spotify so didn’t listen
"You Don't Own Me" is a classic, despite the way Rush Limbaugh tried to ruin it. I can do without the rest of the album, though.
Well. Its popular and catchy and I knew a few songs. - Makes me want to buy a 60th Chevelle or a BelAir and cruise down Hollywood Boulevard. But I won't remember it tomorrow. What I do remember is her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys in "What have I done to deserve this" Top 1001 Album? Maybe not for me.
I appreciate the talent, but no my cup of tea at all.
mid
A half-decent covers album, but no more than that
When I was first listening to this album, I was really about it. But going through it, that "tickle in your brain when you have heard a song before" started going off...and I looked up the tracklist to realize that ALL but ONE of these songs are covers: Mama Said - The Shirelles You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore Do Re Mi - Lee Dorsey When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes - The Supremes My Coloring Book - Sandy Stewart Mockingbird - Inez & Charlie Foxx Twenty Four Hours From Tesla - Gene Pitney Nothing - seemingly an original Anyone Who Had a Heart - Dionne Warwick Will You Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirelles Wishin' and Hopin' - Dionne Warwick Don't You Know - Ray Charles Now I understand that covering all the same soul and pop songs was the thing to do prior to the 70's. Hell, The Beatles did it with their first few albums. It just feels a little disingenuous knowing that these songs were pretty well done their first time around (majority by black artists) but Dusty Springfield gets to claim them because they charted higher for her. She does a good job with them, and she has a hell of a voice, so for that I'll give her credit. I just don't think this is the album to put on 1001 Albums You MUST Hear Before You Die. Give the OG artists their due and list their versions. Favorite Song: Nothing (as it is the only original) Least Favorite: Mockingbird
An album with covers of songs that were for the most part performed by black artists earlier. That is not a problem or a crime, but the versions on album do not add anything.
It was an okay album, but nothing caught or grabbed my attention.
Not available on iTunes. Got through most of a related playlist.
Meh
Musicalgedüdel
Some smash hits surrounded by formulaic pop songs.
boring zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Well, it's just really boring. Also very dated. But I'm pretty sure it was already boring when it was still brand new...
never heard Mockingbird before - that sticks out as an interesting track. 24 Hours and Will You Love Me Tomorrow are the big, famous sounds
Sympa, mais un peu lassant. 2 chansons: You don't own me Can I get a witness
Maybe this was exciting 60 years ago but it really doesnt stand up today
Well, not my kind of music. Too old and too frivolic. Good for Tarentino movies but not for me.
Gave it a go, but it's not for me!
4
lots of famous songs, but they are almost all covers
Not for me
Doo-wop sounding and Mockingbird is in this lol. Good singing but not my thing. 3/10.
Decent, just not what I would listen to again.
What a load of crap
I had high expectations but was very disappointed.
Helt OK, klassiskt gammalt. Wishin' And Hopin' riktig klassiker.
Kind of fun, but not super interesting. Showtunes and a good voice, but the arrangements and lyrics are a bit stale.
It was alright. She's got a lovely voice, but the music isn't really my style.
Couple of good songs and she has a lovely voice but not one to go on regular play for me.
Meh
Dusty? More like rusty! Just kidding, that lady is alright!
An album full of covers, most of which don't improve on the original and/or were covered better by others. Best track: Don't You Know
Dusty has always been a favorite of mine. Soulful white women, go figure? For a debut this ticks a lot of the boxes of what people often associate with her but with no hits compared to the way the album was reconfigured in the US. I prefer later Dusty, specifically Dusty in Memphis and her contribution to the Pet Shop Boys, but there is no denying the catchiness of her early singles that thrusted her into the limelight when she was lumped into the "british invasion" of the mid 60s. Johnny Franz' production work is basically the British Phil Spector but without all the threatening and murdering. He would later produce Scott Walkers' first 4 solo records to masterful results. He delivers as much as would be expected of a pretty straightfoward commercial album to promote Dusty but this is very much a filler standards record that isn't cushioned by any of the classics Dusty would be known for.
Not my style
Girl called boring.
Eh, one Dusty was enough for me... DNF
A karaoke album! I'm really not a fan of the 50's/60's orchestra-backed singers So a pass for me
Boring... very boring.
What a dumb set of songs. The songs and performances are so immature that they can’t be taken seriously.
beach bop americana 50s slop
Don't super care about this album but its nice to see where so many samples come from!
White lady tries to do rb/soul/Motown is only successful because it's 64 and she is white as fuck. It's nothing special. She didn't even write much of it. Very short. Unimaginative.
Not my vibe :(
Dusty Springfield but even more basic and even worse.
Grauenhaft - schon damals unerträglich doof
hated it
Nice voice. Terrible songs
Too old even for me
Sehr alte Songs. Nicht so mein Fall
Good vocalist but pretty shitty most of this album are covers. Particularly from black artists, in the 60s you can assume that was done intentionally for not so cool reasons. Lame. Dumb album. Outdated.
Zu alt für mich. Nicht mein Geschmack
Never heard for her. Music was okay for covers. Why is this important to be included on this list?
Eh
Wtf. Shitty covers. No Son of Preacher Man? No thanks. In what world would you ever listen to this version of Will You Love Me Tomorrow over the Shirelles version? I’m listening to the Carole King (writer) version right now. James Taylor and Joni Mitchell are singing back up!!!
the first song is okay its not that bad the voice is alr
👎🏻
She has a great voice but it’s not my kinda music whatsoever

I did not like it
Listened to two songs and gave up, yet another wasted spot on the list
An artist I've never really heard before, apart from the big songs. Not for me really. I found listening to the whole album meant the songs all blended together. Sounded too similar
Okay, so here's an album that combines every song that I hated from the era but had no idea who that was that sang all these songs. Really great that they are all packaged up together on one album so that I'll never step on this musical landmine again.
Not for me
Langweilig, sehr alt
Maybe not in the mood
no.
2/10
Does not deserve 5. 1/5

Não deixou nenhuma recordação.
I listened to this and imagined someone like Amy Winehouse singing it instead. Now that would have been a great album. Too many of these old timers put no emotion into their music, this is flat and sleep inducing.
Not available
I liked the songs, but the misappropriation made me feel icky. I was like is this a female Elvis?
colonizer
why in the world are there MULTIPLE Dusty albums on this list? the most remarkable thing about this album is how mediocre it is. it's relatively rare that a song cover is interesting enough to be worth releasing, and that is definitely not the case here. nothing I would ever want or need to hear again.
Every boomer is drooling over this one. It's covers from a bygone era with tons of cultural appropriation. The reality of this is that it's a frozen dinner served on a TV tray. And why is every song a fade out? It's so annoying.
She's got a pretty good voice...that's where the compliments for this one end. When you compare her to a lot of contemporaries in the genre she's missing that added dimension of soul. Large parts of this album felt disingenuous- I got the feeling that recording this album was just a 9-5 for her and she was trying to get home on time. I didn't think the backing band was all that creative either. A couple of interesting songs, mostly pretty boring. The back up singers sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks half the time. If hell were the cabaret on a cruise ship, this would surely be the headliner.
#4 Great voice, nice collection of songs. Summer Is Over is the standout but it's a bit of a snooze fest to get that far through the album. 1/5
old lady music (carly probably loves it)
Now I have to clean out my speakers- very sticky music 1 star
just ot my yhinh
Most songs are pretty bad but a few known songs in there. Too bad for those.
Bit boring, not my favourite album ever. Meh.
I prefer silence.
I was already gonna give it a 1 cuz I found it pretty bad, but then I found out none of this shit is even written by her. Nobody needs to hear this before they die, they'll be ok. Will I listen to again: 0%
This was bad. The only thing that I kind of liked were some of the instrumentals in the background, but they were also just on repeat, so even that got boring.
Not for me
Puh
Meh
Not really a fan of this. It's not that she's a bad singer, it just doesn't work for me. I struggled to finish this. 1.5/5
I hated it. Wishin' And Hopin' is a cute song but that's it
It’s a big fat no from me chief.
Awful, just terrible, dated, of its time music that I would rather have not had to listen to. I derived zero enjoyment from listening to this rather dull collection of drab songs. I almost had to stop when I endured Dusty wailing away during Mockingbird, an unpleasant experience. I was also disturbed to learn this must have been a double album, as the listening time was too long for a single LP. Truly a test of endurance to make it all the way to the end, like having the worst radio station ever on for an hour.
Its okay, not really for me

Dusty's Karaoke Album. Seriously, these are all covers and they're not particularly good ones. What makes this a must hear? Her voice is not as great as people seem to think and the string additions are awful.

You don't own me est bonne...

Not for me. Could not finish.
Felt pretty boring to me. I don't really have anything else to say.
