Reviews (page 10 of 12)

There's a lot of really nice songs on here, but I realised they're all covers, so a lot of that is simply down to the power of the song writing. She's a good singer though, of course. It's a perfectly nice time overall.

Some great songs, some filler. Dare I say it: I prefer covers of a lot of her songs to the originals

Classic

A white girl names Dusty sings Motown

Classic! Enjoyable. Not mind-blowing, IMHO.

Vanhan rockin tai jonkun jazzin tai jonkun soulin tyyppistä poppia. Levyllä 2 tunnettua kappaletta, You Dont Own me ja I Only Want To Be With You

A nice sounding "oldies" album. Many covers of recognizable hits. There isn't anything mind blowing here. It's all just nice.

Dusty Springfield has a way of making you feel lighter with her music. Her songs are effortless and easy, even when they're clearly not her best work. An album full of covers, this was still nice but most tracks paled in comparison to other renditions - whether they were the originals or other covers. Dusty shines much, much more when she's singing fully in her own voice. I got a glimpse of that in Mama Said, but for the most part these were just nice covers and not great songs.

This album was a lot more soulful than I expected with the consistent use of choir backup. I tended to like the tracks that leaned into that style more than those that sounded more like standard 60s fare.

6 or 7 hits and gold standards (including the imperious Anyone Who Had A Heart). Wonderful 1960s pop gem. Dusty improved, so only a high 3 stars.

Song all sounded the same

first listen the string work is nice but really not my style

Pop. Soul.

Bright and sunshiny, swinging and soulful. Not something I would usually listen to but pleasant enough

Some great oldies songs on here, but a bit boring even for a genre I like. Songs being on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack allowed this album to eek out a 3 rating by a hair

I like the simplicity of this album and Dusty’s tone is wonderful. Nothing wowed me about this album but it’s a nice listen.

Pretty solid

very nostalgic

It's about as good as an album of covers can ever be, for better or for worse. Some excellent picks to cover, with a decent variety of styles. Stuck between 3 and 4, but it's not quite good enough to justify the lack of anything original. It captures the sound of the 50s/60s pretty well, and makes me think of working in a dinner in that era (which working at Frankie and Benny's is pretty close to). 15/02/23

Started out with some bangers but this got old pretty quick. Great voice tho.

6/10 un disco normal, buenos y malos temas.

Listened to on 2/16/23 3/5 Favorite song: mama said The beginning of the album was surprisingly recognizable and enjoyable but nothing crazy memorable

Dusty has a great voice, but the song selection on this album leaves something to be desired.

classic

Strange and odd but haunted and useful. Started strong but tailed off.

Hit and miss for me, in equal measure.

I'm familiar with a couple of Dusty Springfield songs (the use of "Son of a Preacher Man" in Pulp Fiction is perfection), but this was my first time listening to one of her albums from start to finish. In my mind, Dusty is one of the best singers of all time. Her vocals are smooth, yet powerful, and it almost seems to me like she sings like she's trying to restrain herself from unleashing the full power of her voice, and I feel like her vocals leave me wanting more, in a way that I'm hanging on to every note she sings. Today, I learned that she's the one singing with the Pet Shop Boys on "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" As a Pet Shop Boys fan, I'm ashamed that I didn't notice this. Now to actually discuss 'A Girl Called Dusty.' While Dusty's vocals are amazing, this album just isn't that great in my opinion. Dusty didn't write any of the songs on here (and that doesn't detract from her skills as a vocalist), and I think that kind of robs the music of some depth. I think of these songs as soul-adjacent, but with them all being essentially covers, they're kind of robbed of some added depth. And with a collection of songwriters' works being performed here, the album just doesn't feel very cohesive in my opinion. There's just not much here setting this work apart from similar works that had been released prior to it nor during the time it was released. Dusty has amazing vocals, but that's kind of all this album has.

Solid. Good pop 60s album

I'm not sure there is anything truly exceptional here. Maybe I'm missing something. Doesn't even include the song that she's really known for.

Pleasant voice, some songs I know. Not bad.

Decent...like the classics (although non-Dusty version are likely better). Much better than Dusty in Memphis. 3/5

Not bad

A collection of some songs she took from others and put her voice to. Like Elvis! Based on that, the only real way to judge the album fairly is to judge her voice, because that's the only thing original here. Her voice is good. I don't know, that's all. Honestly, the song choice could have been better tbh.

Dusty Springfield's talent is evident on this album, but not particularly well served by the arrangements of the songs themselves, which are mostly covers. Some genuine classics in songwriting here as you would expect - Holland/Dozier/Holland, Goffin/King, Bacharach/David, etc.). But of course, none of these versions really come near the originals. If you're a Dusty fan, your time would probably be better spent finding a good collection of her hits. "Wishin' and Hopin'" is splendid, beat song on the album. The album isn't available in this order on Spotify, but you can get all the songs by picking around the albums "Dusty" and "Stay Awhile/I Only Want To Be With You," both of which are available. Fave Songs: Wishin' and Hopin', Anyone Who Had a Heart, My Colouring Book, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa, Don't You Know

Very reminiscent of the time

Rather easy listening. More in my ballpark, but also not something I want to hear all the time.

Album was fine. Seemed kind of generic in some places, but there were a few that I enjoyed.

I enjoyed a few songs on this album. Listened back to back with Boy in Da Corner though

Listened to it no problem, she has a nice voice.

3 star

Wonderful voice but limited by average material and dated production.

I'm a fan of Dusty, but wasn't really feeling this album.

Never actively listened to her before other than like the 19 and 23 albums. Seriously thought, amazing voice, just can’t imagine seeking out

Levy täynnä vähän kaikkea. Kyllä tätä taisi kuitenkin enimmäkseen hymyillen kuunnella niin laitetaan kolmonen, vaikka Dustya olis voinut laittaa vaikka kakkoseenkin.

I expected to not enjoy this one much at all since its all covers. I however, was pleasantly surprised. Dusty adds her own dimension to the music and the songs flow well together. Not groundbreaking but solid.

Cover album. Excellent voice and nice production - solid apart from the terrible Ray Charles cover -not sure why it is on the list

"Zeg maar niets meer..." Some great songs from the likes of Burt Bacharach and Ray Charles, but I'm still not particularly impressed by Dusty Springfield's voice. It was just okay.

Did expect to like this based on the artwork. Glad I was wrong

3.5/5 Only knew Dusty Springfield by name before I listened to this, but her voice sounded immediately familiar. The music is catchy and her voice is great. Really enjoyed this. Favourite songs: - Mama said - You don’t own me

Highlights: Anyone Who Had A Heart, Wishin' And Hopin' 3,5/5

So that's where the Luis Miguel song comes from!

Solid album, nothing on the level of Son of the Preacher Man 3/5

Oli ennakkokäsitys dustysta pölyisenä etelävaltojen miehenä, mut tää olikin positiivinen yllätys parin tuttuine biiseineen!

Går liksom inte igilla detta. Musik man blir glad av.

A shrug.

fast urge to dance

She's clearly got a really nice voice. After listening to the album I listened to her top couple hits, those are better songs and none of them's on this album.

Very fun!

Classic songs

Guess this was an important record for the Brits, bringing fashionable sounds of the day from America over their side of the pond. A few tracks stand out among the usual lovelorn ditties, and early sixties pop rock / r'n'b always makes nice background music anyway, doesn't it? Dusty's voice is very good, too, even though she really goes over the top for that Ray Charles cover closing the proceedings. Try as hard as you can Dusty, you're still looking a little pale for that sort of thing, aren't you? This here is the sort of detail that can make you smirk a little about the way bubblegum pop in those years unabashedly 'whitewashed' African-American musical heritage. That being said, two other nice covers from Dionne Warwick's early repertoire (stellar "Anyone Who Had A Heart", and cutesy "Wishin' And Hopin'", both penned by the Burt Bacharach/Hal David writing duo) brought to my attention how classy the first couple of Warwick albums are. So I guess I can thank *A Girl Called Dusty*'s inclusion on this list for that, at least. So, yeah, all of this is quite interesting, but it didn't fully convince me this record should be listened to *at all cost*--except perhaps if you're a nostalgic fan of that more innocent-sounding, early swinging-sixties era. Springfield was admittedly an important figure, but maybe not for the album format... Worthy of note, the US version of this record, just called "Dusty" (appropriately enough) has a very different tracklisting that includes another Bacharach/David signature song, "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" (remember The White Stripes' version, by the way?). Had this track been included in the original version, my interest in the latter might have been a little more stronger, who knows? Waiting now to properly listen to the *Dusty In Memphis* one to see if there's more to Springfield's core repertoire than this latter tune and, of course, "Son Of A Preacher Man". I know *that* LP is coming up, too, and if there are enough gems in it, I might add another name to my own personal album hall of fame. But not before. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 827 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 95 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 42 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 37 (including this one)

This was a nice change. A bit long, but fine nonetheless.

Dont You know é boa.

(3.5) Nice!

Surprised how much i enjoyed it 3

Debut. It's kinda a compilation of covers so we are really reviewing the voice and production here which is good. Just feels a bit fragmented. I'm hoping "Dusty in Memphis" comes up later as that is pure gold. This has fine moments but isn't anywhere near unified. 3.

Easy on the ears.

Some right good songs but still just shy of a 4.

Obviously good stuff, though not my cup of tea. Great voice and I realised I quite like 24 Hours from Tulsa when it’s not Gene Pitney.

Not the best dusty I have heard

Nice singer, sounds cute in a quaint-cause-this-from-the-60s way. Not my general thing but I get it.

Better than expected. 3.5/5

listenable, 3/5

Classic 60s songs I didn’t know were by her. Solid album full of hits but not my favorite genre.

Always liked Dusty's blend of grandiose arrangements and catchy melodies. Wishin' and Hopin' and I Only Want To Be With You were childhood favourites of mine (though the latter is apparently a bonus track, and I'm never sure whether to factor those into my rating). The songs are pretty strong throughout and I'd happily listen again, but I can't give it a higher mark because most of them aren't Dusty Springfield originals, and it feels like cheating when you can have your pick of songs other people have already recorded. 3.5

This was fine, a nice listen. She has a great voice.

Ikkje så ille som forventa

After a bunch of really long albums, it was nice to have some short easy listening rocky/popy songs. That's probably making me enjoy it a lot more since I don't think these are exceptional and just kinda straight forward covers of some good songs. 3.5/5

Altough a little bit repetitive, it's not a bad release. It's funny because some songs from the same decade sound so fresh and songs like those from this album sound so...old fashion. This is not necessarily bad, there are plenty of old-fashioned songs that are still great in 2022. These ones are fine but not great and that's nice. Sometimes, we need to listen to nice songs that are not classical quintessential music. She had a great and powerful voice. I'll probably look for other releases from her.

I have a soft spot for these late 50s/early 60s crooner records, mainly because they were written at a time when narrative storytelling was essentially the whole point of each song. Dusty's voice cuts clear through the mix and delivers a powerful, impactful performance (even if the subject matter is the same for every single song). The big band instrumentation, while not revolutionary in any sense, adds the necessary pomp and drama to deliver an experience.

I knew a number of these songs but had never known they were Dusty Springfield!

She sounds good, and it's a nice 60s vibe, with decent cover songs. Apparently this was a departure from her original sound, and was her first solo record.

I bet she played a role in bringing this music to more cultures and countries, and that's lovely. But there wasn't much that really impressed me more than other singers' versions of most of this. Good for history and context.

Sounds a bit dusty these days

Some bops for sure on this one. As with the last Dusty record I had, I’m always surprised with her ability to smoothly pull off the retro-soul sound. 6/10

4 stars just for her amazing voice. However, she loses one star for singing too many covers. Her voice is so controlled even when she's belting out the song.

There are a bunch of covers on this album. I like the hit song Wishin and Hopin and didn't know it was sung by Dusty Springfield. She has a terrific voice.

Perfectly fine early/mid-60s pop/white soul. Think I like this more than the celebrated Memphis album.

Dusty Springfield's solo debut is mostly covers of other's songs, for example Lesley Gore on You Don't Own Me, but Dusty manages to make all the songs her own in some way or another. Not her best, but quite good! 3.5.

I've always liked her

Basically vaguely soulful covers

legal, romantica dos anos 60 e pa

Decent covers

She must have been a superstar in her day recording the definitive versions of many classics Cover art 3/5

It's a fair listen, nothing bad, but then nothing hugely great either. It disappeared into the world a bit about halfway through.

3.5 stars. Dusty had a great voice, but this is a cover album and I liked some of the originals better.

Before listening to this album, I couldn't have told you what songs Dusty Springfield sang, only that she was a singer. I recognized at least four of the tracks on the album, but I know that I've heard covers of most if not all of them. I don't know if I've heard Springfield's versions before. Springfield is a talented singer. Listening to the album was an enjoyable experience, but the style of music feels like it is firmly set in the early days of pop and rock music. I don't see me wanting to pick up this album for a revisit (and if I did I would want to skip "Mockingbird" - it's too busy of a song).

I liked this one so much more than the last dusty album. it reminded me of the fallout soundtrack steven used to play, very fun.

Dusty certainly has a lovely voice. I'm just a Luddite and this vibe sounds Too Old for me to really enjoy

Some pretty good songs on here

Pièces préférées: When The Love Light Starts Shining Thru His Eyes, You Don't Own Me, Anyone Who Had A Heart

Really liked this one. The album as a whole felt stitched together.

I can appreciate that she has a decent voice, but this music and style of arrangement/production does nothing for me.

A really nice 60s pop soul album. A great voice and beautifully written and produced pop songs, including some Bacharachian gems. The early fade out of most tracks still bugs me (the songs are easily good enough to each be a minute longer), but probably not worthy of the harsh penalty I gave 'Dusty in Memphis' - sorry, Dusty! 3.5/5

E ovo je već dobar album. Onak taman, zanimljiv, lijep glas, nije monotona glazba, sviđa mi se. Čim sam čuo "You Don't Own Me" kad je rekla, odma sam vidio jednu stvar od Eminema koji je koristio to kao sample.

Nice enough with a few bright gems, but nothing too strong pulling me back in.

Few things, now or ever, like Dusty's voice.

Great voice, good mix of songs although some of the arrangements were odd.

Bästa låt: You Don't Own Me.

Featuring the great voice of Dusty, and the songwriting skills of Bacharach/David

I don't think this is something I'll come back to, but I did recognise a few bits and pieces from my past. Music was decent, can't fault it, but just not my style though.

I think I like Every Ounce of Strength the most. 3.5*

Decent easy listening album of mostly Motown and soul covers that ultimately though fails to provide any real highlights

Dusty has a great soul voice. You Don't Own Me is a great tune. Will You Love Me Tomorrow and Wishin' And Hopin' are both classics. The album has great singles but there is not a unifying theme that ties the whole thing together.

A bit dusty and long, but has some nice songs on it.

Quite fun, but long (and not all the songs are great). Favourites: Mama Said, You don't own me, Will you love me tomorrow, I only want to be with you.

Fantastic singer, music exactly what you'd expect for 1964

This is why they tell you not to judge a book by it's cover. Looking at the album cover I was expecting a country album, but surprisingly what I got was a pop/Motown record including a cover of 'You Don't Own Me'. The album has a similar soul to the likes of Adele, but sounds like Hairspray. Best: You Don't Own Me Worst: Wishin' and Hopin' Note: Spotify had the 1997 reissue with 20 tracks. I only listened to the original 12 tracks from the album.

Cute songs

We had recently watched "Last Night In Soho" (great film, highly recommended). You can tell Edgar Wright is very particular about the music for his movies. Anyway, Dusty Springfield was on the soundtrack, along with a number of singers from the 60s whom I did not know at all. Yet they were HUGELY popular. I mean, Dusty Springfield had numerous hits. Nancy Sinatra is another one. HUGE in the 60s and early 70s, and then POOF, just gone. I didn't think that this album captured her vocal capabilities as well as it could. Supposedly that would be for "Dusty In Memphis". Also, a couple of the songs were better performed by the original artists, and her singing sounded very... white to me. Not as authentic as the real deal. So yes, I am giving this 3 stars, I think that other albums of hers are better.

Saw the album and artist and thought "I don't recognize the name Dusty Springfield". Heard the second track You Don't Own Me and thought "I know this song." Turns out the song is featured in a cheeky Kraft Dinner (Mac & Cheese) commercial with former Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page. Also turns out it's her version of Mockingbird Harry & Lloyd sing in Dumb and Dumber (I laughed as soon as I heard it). And it turns out she is the original artist for the songs I Only Want to be With You (not sure I knew her version) and Son of a Preacher Man (definitely know her version...respect). Weird how your world orbits around artists and songs without really making a connection. Anyway, back to the album, it's got a nice Motown feel from someone born far away from Motown. She's got some good pipes. She does some nice renditions of other artists' songs (...Lovelight..., 24 Hours from Tulsa, Will You Love Me Tomorrow) and Wishin' and Hopin' is a nice original. A fun album. Lacks a bit of depth maybe? Feels like a 3.5.

24th November 2021 Listened at the kitchen table while working. Went out in the evening to Ave Mario then saw Seann Walsh in Kennington. Greg Davies sat at the bar. What a voice dusty has, very soulful and timeless. So beautifully crafted songs on this album.

Definitely an interesting listen. Not gonna act like it's the greatest thing ever because it's pretty much all covers of Motown and soul songs but they're performed and sung pretty tastefully. Plus gotta give credit to Dusty Springfield for introducing the Motown and 50s souls sound to a UK audience and her passion for it shows in this album. Not particularly amazing or impactful for me in both context and emotion but still a solid 50s pop record from the early 60s (plus You Don't Own Me is so damn cool)

Beautiful music, but I'm rarely ever in the mood for 60's jams.

Definitely free on me the further in I got. Probably need to revisit a couple of her albums. The stream went straight from this into Son of a Preacher Man, reminding me of how much I have loved her musi before.

I would say the song selection on this LP is better than the "Memphis" LP that we were sent last month - more soul vs. orchestrated 60s pop. That said, it seems that she covers a number of songs that were big hits for other artists in '63, a year before this came out. I guess that was the record business before singer-songwriters hit the scene. Wishin' and hopin' was a minor hit for Dionne Warwick in '63, but Dusty scooped it and made it her signature tune. I've always loved the song, though the lyrics are quite laughable these days.

This was fairly nice 60’s pop album and she covers a few nice soul songs quite well. She indeed has a good voice but I started to lose interest after about half an hour as it needs more variety. 2.5 out of 5

3.4 - The debut of a towering female vocalist that shows her humbler beginnings covering some top-40 hits of the era. Clearly she's got vocal chops - what an amazing instrument. Here she's made clever song choices and the arrangements are tasteful. She's also starting to hone her fascinating persona, which is a compelling mix of empowered woman, sophisticated lady, fun-loving plaything, jilted lover and obliging mistress.

Vorfreudige 3.2

3.25 - fun old time vibe. Great music for the right environment.

Carina lei!

Showing the wannabes how it should be done :)

She has a good voice and the songs are generally pretty fun to jive to. However, this album is a compilation of cover songs from other bands at the time. Although it's a pretty good album, I can't give it too much credit as the original bands deserve that credit more. Favorite track: Nothing

Oldie reminds me of road trips from my youth. I don’t love it but very influential.

8/3 Good oldie country album, couple great songs here. Standout Tracks: Mama Said, You Don't Own Me, My Colouring Book, Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa

Dusty has a very nice voice. No chances taken certainly as I feel like this is her comfort zone. Hi-lights for me; 24 hours From Tulsa, Wishin' and Hopin', Don't You Know (a tour de force bluesy rave-up) and Can I Get a Witness. Dusty'y voice is really very good, full of character and very versatile. The material is just OK! 3.5 stars

Lovely oldie pop album. Some of the songs were heard prior but never knew it was Dusty. Enjoyed a majority of the songs and could listen again. 7.4/10

Felt like a lot of the originals are better but may be due to losing the masters

Some genuine classics on here, as well as countless romcom soundtracks. But don’t let that put you off. Awesome voice. The sound of 60s smalltown middle America right there.

Some good songs, particularly you don't own me, but otherwise fairly standard fair.

Lovely.

Front loaded with bops. Lot of the songs on Spotify were unavailable. Standouts include Mockingbird, 24 hours to Tulsa, Mama Said, Summer is Over

Another album of mostly covers - mad how you could get away with that so easily back then. Still some good tunes on here, though. Best track: Wishin' and Hopin'

This was nice

Knew way more of these songs than I expected. They were nice

HET WAS OK

Until this album, “Son of a Preacher Man” was the only Dusty Springfield song I knew. This album is ok, but doesn’t have any “Preacher Man” level comparables. The one song that stuck out was “Can I Get a Witness” - good energy and gospel vibe. The rest is early 60s background music, that is best left there.

Some classics on here. Not really my thing but it’s solid album.

like if adele was from the 60s and only sang covers. meh. 6/10

Low 6. The cover of Mockingbird was silly if good and I liked Mama Said, but I can't listen to /that/ many songs about slightly worrisome 60s straight couples

Nice album from Dusty

She sings amazingly, very 60’s, reminds me of like the very old Beatles, maybe too jolly for me but overall it was good.

Not unpleasant and I recognized some songs, but it wasn't good or anything. 6

Entretenido.

why don't people sing with british accents? Are these mostly covers? Some songs written by Burt Bacharach bringin that soul Son of a Preacher Man isn't on this album...

sorprendente

Enjoyed it at the start, hits like wishin and hopin got me back in at the end, but overall nothing that really stuck out to me. three.

I think it's decent enough 60's pop, but it's in desperate need of a remaster. The mono 60's sound is incredibly dated and keeps the instrumentals decidedly behind Springfield's (admittedly very good!) vocals

Good early glimpse at a legend. While many of the songs aren't particularly memorable, we get a sense of her emerging style as she tried on soul alongside Brill Bldg pop songs.

More songs on here that I knew but didn't realise who they were by - not my usual genre. Good album, memorable songs.

Few bangers

Old 50’s 60’s music. Important listen but doubt I’d come back.

Some nice covers.....the Canadian Tuxedo on the cover nearly earned her a bonus star.

Solid album I like the first few songs.

Listened to the first couple songs, they were p good

she has a really great voice, too many songs on the album, but super catchy and sweet :) 3.5

Pretty good and enjoyable. Probably won't listen to again but appreciate she is a good artist.

Viel Kitsch, zwei tolle Songs

Liked it - had many songs I knew and liked that i never knew were by her

good sound and voice with background instruments, nothing super memorable though

É pop misturado com motown. Algumas funcionam bem pra mim, outras menos.

Favorites: Can I Get a Witness?, I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself Huge, orchestral production. Wavers between pop and soul. "Dusty" version on Spotify includes multiple releases.

Really good album, some greats and some ok songs.

gott sväng men för långt

Another great pop soul album. Only downside is that it has too many songs, so listening to the whole album at once might feel like a drag. Individually, however, the songs are a great listen. Standout tracks: You don’t own me (classic), Do Re Mi, Will you love me tomorrow, Can I get a witness. 7.8/10

Mysigt

Album not available on Apple Music review based on “Dusty in Memphis” instead

Opløftende britisk soul

Surprisingly didn’t hate it

It was fine - a very retro album that was pleasing to the ears, but did not blow my mind.

Dusty has a lovely voice, but she, Johnny Franz and Keith Grant add absolutely nothing of value to this conglomerate of covers. It's a total shame, to take a collection of classics, and completely render them in exactly the same way as the original, because it doesn't make the listener want to revisit anything about the album. In fact, the cover of You Don't Own Me was so similar to the Leslie Gore original, that I almost thought Dusty's was the original and had to go back and check. Lo and behold, Gore's is still better.

Album is chock full of hits. The only problem is they are mostly other people's hits. The album is still an enjoyable listen and the concept of a British pop diva named Dusty gets an extra half star. 2.5/5 stars

I guess soul is not for me. The covers are... meh, generally. Dusty had a great voice but almost all songs had better versions

"I Think You Should Leave" Theme Song ahh music

Dusty's got a beautiful voice, but unfortunately a lot of these songs didn't really do it for me. I just wasn't wild about the way they were written, and I wonder as her career went on, if she ever had more control over being able to write songs herself. I'd listen to more, because I really did like her vocals, but overall I wasn't into this one. I will say the last third of the record was really good, which when you look at the list of songwriters (Hal David/Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Ray Charles) it's not a surprise that those hit the hardest.

A lot of familiar songs, but very dated and not my jam.

Another one from the 60s... Maybe I'd like this more because it's a girlie. 🥺 Update: I didn't finish it, I listened to like 10 songs and then I thought to myself that I'd finish it today but tbh I feel like listening to the next one LOL. I think I liked what I heard, though, at least more than the previous three albums.

A 1960s vocal pop album consisting entirely of covers is probably not one of the essential 1001 albums of all time. Even the likes of Willie Nelson loses a star automatically for having an all-covers album- and Dusty is clearly no Willie. Realistically, this is closer to the Rolling Stones' debut in quality. The singing is good, but it's just basic 60s pop. Is it important? I have no idea. Is it good? Depends on who you ask. If you ask me, I'd say that it's pleasant enough without really offering anything of substance. This has not been a good week for albums for me(Stephen Stills is mediocrity incarnate and Eminem is way too aggressive and hateful), and this album does little to turn this meh streak around.

It was fine, but felt manufactured in a way. Decent covers of decent songs.

Sounds great, and I understand it was a different time, but I don’t get these cover albums from this period.

This seems like Pat Boone level appropriation to me. That being said - it's well produced and nice to listen to.

I get why it's on here. It's just not my style white girl Soul is an oxymoron.

I feel like this has been a perennial “why is this here” album on these charts. I guess that's fair… Dusty in Memphis is the really big release, and while these are just fine, it is another example of, this could be anyone singing these songs. Dusty's voice is quirky in a way that can be uncomfortable. It's not bad, but it's not really remarkable for good reasons. It's hard to explain, but it's on full display on Do Re Mi, which is a song you'd be hard pressed to make sound good. There are a couple such songs that proved that in the 50s and 60s, you could write any fool idea down and make someone sing it. Which is to say, My Colouring Book would be a clunky overwrought metaphor no matter who sang it. Largely this feels like it's in here as a debut of someone who became an icon, which would be like including Bowie's Images/Deram Anthology. Again, it's not -bad-, it's just not something that has maintained cultural relevance. There's a solid 24 Hours From Tulsa and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. Wishin' and Hopin’ is about as good as the song has the capacity for, and You Don't Own Me is probably the best track here. But nothing here feels like it was made FOR Dusty… all of those songs were done better and more iconically. Dusty basically just fills an early Amy Winehouse role… white woman does passable impression of Soul vocals. At least Amy was giving us original songs. It deserves a bit more respect than ive seen, but it's probably not more than a strong 2*.

Some nice covers for sure, but it really overstays its welcome in my opinion 2.5/5

I made it three songs in, and I'd rather hear Dusty sing originals than covers.

I’m a fan of hers but standard covers aren’t so great

I thought it was an american man, but it was an english woman who is white but sings black music, very strange, also I was just not in this vibe today

Some very nice orchestrations here, and Dusty has a great singing voice. However, throughout the album, I had a sneaking suspicion, and looking it up on Wikipedia once I was finished confirmed it: Dusty didn't write a single goddamn song on this album. She didn't even play on it! A really blatant attempt to whitewash soul music--which most white music of the early 60s was, but come on, at least try to put your own spin on it. Ultimately, while it was pleasant enough that I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

10/10 delivery Aber random covers...

bro -1 star for that ray charles impression tf

Not my style

Not bad, but I’ll never listen to this again. 2

Somewhat iconic songs (e.g. you don't owe me) and nice, chilled vibes for a Sunday Friday evening that remind you of better times. Especially at the beginning. At some point a bit repetitive tho and not totally my genre

Sure, she's got a great voice and then execution of these covers are very professional. But it's incredibly difficult to rate an album full of covers. A strange inclusion on this list. Tricky business.

Dusty in Memphis, which we got a few months ago in this challenge, was a great example of blue-eyed soul. This one, not so much, unfortunately. Dusty's debut album, this consists of a series of pop soul covers of older songs, and they overall harken back much more to that era between the end of the Golden Age of rock 'n' roll and Beatlemania, where popular music was just recycled and churned out by songwriting teams. Not nearly as instant a classic as her later work, unfortunately.

A collection of covers. Got really old really fast. Like at least she can sing well, but this is the kind of album that really doesn’t need to belong on this list. Sorry.

A cover compilation? What are we doing here? I loved Dusty In Memphis when it came up, and yet this somehow got old by the fifth track! Standouts: Mama Said • Wishin' And Hopin' • Don't You Know

I was a bit let down by this album because I like Dusty in Memphis a surprising amount. I don't think she really had her soul influences sorted out yet at this point and there isn't much variety. The first time I listened to it I realized that songs 6-9 had completely passed me by without leaving any impression.

it’s fine. don’t really care for it.

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 2.2 (B-) Goodfellas Music. That is unkind, since its 40s and 50s hits filtered through the lens of British orchestral pop music. The album feels less like a cohesive whole and more like a Best Of compilation, highlighting powerful vocal performances over a unified listening experience. I really dont have much to say for most of these songs as I am so divorced from this STYLE of how music is made. You know what though, its a breezy 30 minute listen rather than an almost 2 hour slog double album. Track Thoughts: Mama Said C+ I like this more then Wishn' and Hopen' but its so archetypal its hard to find much to criticize OR appreciate. You Don't Own Me A+ I really like the structure of this song, its push and pull from minor to major. A true belter. This feels like a Bond song. Do Re Mi B+ I cant help but think of the "movie montages" that could be set to this song. "Forget about the Dough and think about Me" is a good line. When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes C- Not really jiving with this one. Couldn't even put my finger on why. This is really hard to evaluate descriptively. Its so very vibes based. It might just be, as I seem to sink so many this way, that the melody is repetitive, in that its just calls and responses. My Colouring Book A I am with a Colouring Book Fiend, so this was kind of humorous to see there was just like, a whole song about Colouring Book Song, which I didnt really think of as a Fad like 70 years ago. A song that is a guided meditation on love lost, but also a paint by numbers (or lyrics in this case), but also with evocative thought experiments like "what is the color of gone, lonely, or empty". Musically, it does nothing for me, conceptually and lyrically it does everything. Mockingbird D Talk about the call and response structure getting in the way of me enjoying a song! I think of this as a simple children's nursery rhyme song. Vocally very impressive. I just uh, dont really care to listen to it. This is the YYZ problem all over again XD. Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa C- I feel nothing about this song. This is such a weird song. I am at a loss for why I dont like it I just dont. Nothing D+ This feels structurally so very similar to the previous song, just you know the exact opposite message. It also keeps me at arms length from an emotional connection with it. Anyone Who Had a Heart B Sonically similar to You Dont Own Me, but it doesnt reach the same heights. But I like this pining, darker tone compared to the last 3 songs. Has a really nice sax solo. Will You Love Me Tomorrow C Filmscore montage background nothing music for me. And like, nothing about it bad? its just not a For Me song. I dont ever see me needing to turn this on to just lay back and listen to. Wishin' and Hopin' C- See above comment. Its at least strange in its super cut off verb delivery? I think it dies due to its repetitive natures ILL KEEP REPEATING IT. Don't You Know A This is at least just fun! This is a big showy number. I cant hate this. A great show stopper for an album ender.

Dusty is an exceptional singer (her phrasing on some of these songs, like "When the Love Starts Shining Thru His Eyes," is breathtaking), but it feels strange to include a cover album on a "best of" list, and I'd be curious to see how many albums from the artists she covered made it onto the list as well

this album is such a steal they released it again 3 decades later with even more cover songs? jeezus! Would I listen again? I'll listen to the original black artists Deserves to be on this list? nope 2.3 (because she covered good songs)

4/10 muh

two dusty springfield albums in three days is too much. also not as good as the other one

Oldies in the 60s. I like her voice but there's cooler stuff at this point

Given this was an album compromised entirely of covers it was nowhere near bad at all, but I've never been into music from the 60's all that much and for most of these songs, if I did like them, I preferred listening to the originals

Not into the whole doo wop thing

Fuck this shit, I'm putting the new Neurosis album on again

ok, now shut up and make me a sandwich

it's good enough but dusty is better when doing her own work or working with her own writers. she takes on a lot of great songs here and does them just fine.

Got bored halfway through. Cute songs, but gets repetitive in the album format.

Fine but nothing intersting.

I spent days looking at this album thinking it was going to be BUFFALO Springfield. Boy was I disappointed. You know one thing I hate about old records like this? You didn't ask? Well, this is my review, so either stop reading or buckle up pal. WOMAN SINGERS. Wait no, that's my new sassy music reviewer character that I'm workshopping. All I have so far is that he hates women. What do you think? uhh where was I? Oh yeah, these old singers load up their records love songs that have all these different takes on love and are all seemingly about a different person they're in love with/heartbroken over. One second She "Only Wants to Be With You," and three seconds later she's sleeping with a stranger because she was travelling (?). One track is about crying everyday because the guy you wanted to date is poor? Other than the bipolar nonsense in the track listing, this was boring. Keep these tracks for artistic-ish yet very mainstream films and leave ME alone. 2 HIGHLGIHTS: A wrestler called Dusty might have been more entertaining as a record.

Definitely recognized a few of the songs on here from samples but overall didn’t really enjoy this album.

Bit sauceless but well performed

I just do not give a shit

Good album to listen to, but for an album released in the mid-60s this sounds dated from the late 50's. Is it because white people finally found soul music?

Surprisingly disappointed

Great voice, but really outdated and a rip off of other songs, particularly from the black community.

Dustyyy

neither the best Dusty album nor the best version of many of the songs on this album.

It's ok

Great singing, but the album and the arrangements did not capture my attention.

It's okay, she really has a great voice but outside that the record doesn't achive anything beyond the ordinary

A few cuts dusty performed better than anyone, and a lot more she didn’t

Album 59 Top 3 favorites off the album: You Don't Own Me, I Wish I'd Never Loved You, Will You Love me Tomorrow I did it again. I started listening to the wrong album, but I caught myself before listening to the whole thing. Amy Winehouse but with a way different take on love (less sex and fewer drugs). It's a specific flavor of yearning that I associate with late spring/early summer baking on a Saturday afternoon, laundry in the washer and dryer, windows open, nice breeze. Maybe I'm just tired of the winter. I'm a little disappointed. There were some hits, and some total flops. There's obviously way better soul out there, but still. And yes, I know I Wish I'd Never Loved You is not technically on the original release. Get over it. I liked it a lot.

Also found this album underwhelming. There was nothing in particular I could point to that was wrong with it, but I didn't care for it. I think maybe I don't care much for love songs/albums perhaps.

Great voice, ultimately a covers album with not loads going on

Pitch Meeting: Let’s take hit soul songs by black Motown artists and give them to a pretty soulless white hot blonde British women and make a ton of money!

73. ok

Da de di do Dusty. Good but not great, covers album.

Why is this on this list. —Noah We got to Dusty albums in a row. I’m bored. —Ruby

Pleasant vocals and overall sound. Some great songs.

Of course I like her classics - you don’t own me, mama said, I only wanna be with you, and wishin and hopin, but that’s where it ends. I guess I like them because of the movies they were in.

She has a great voice but I am confused as to why a cover album was included on this list…

An album just full of covers. She has good vocals.

I really hate this. Didn’t make it through the full album. Stand-outs - Do Re Mi - You Don’t Own Me - Summer Is Over

I mean, it was fine. About as fine as a pop song cover album can be, I guess. The voice is good, as are most of the songs. There's nothing really that great about it, though. Plus, it got boring after a few songs despite how short they were. Taking a few points off because they're other people's songs puts this right around a 2 for me. Overall: 2/5

Is aight

Very very generic album, nothing standing out. Just really boring. Some tracks I was familiar with, but definitely not memorable. 2/5

5/10- Nice voice, kind of slow album, all covers.

I preferred her voice on that earlier, more soul album we already had. But while it sounded smooth and kind of fake there, here she’s clearly in her element with these yé-yé tunes. It works as background music, with a raised eyebrow whenever you recognize the original Claude François covered. My mother would love it, listenable but far from unforgettable.

Major let down after hearing Dusty in Memphis, Ms. Springfield you're better than this

Not as strong as "Dusty in Memphis". Dusty's got a great sounding voice, but it's better suited for singing soul pop than just pure pop. The album itself felt unpolished. I usually don't care about lyrics, but the ones on "Do Re Mi" are noticeably low effort. The two different vocals on "Mockingbird" don't mesh together at all. In general, the vocals seem to be lacking emotional and dynamic range. The powerful verses felt lacking, and the smooth verses felt rushed. The additional tracks included in the expanded edition of the album were a little better than the original. All the tracks on the original album were mid. There were some decent ones on the expanded edition, but nothing great. The only track that stood out to me was "Every Day I Have To Cry". I thought the trumpets were fun, and Dusty's vocals were more energetic. 2 stars for the original, and 2.5 stars for the expanded edition.

I have actually heard a bunch of these before but had no idea it was a white lady. They are definitely superbly sung and arranged and have a lot of staying power in terms of their usage in pop culture, movies, references, etc. She sort of sounds like she was the OG Bond theme type of singer. 1960's Adele. It's well done and I can't argue that it hasn't stood the test of time! While these are covers, I think she isn't afraid to be rather forward and a bit risque in places which was probably pretty controversial at the time - there's even a tawdry double entendre on "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?": Is this a lasting treasure / Or just a moment's pleasure? / Can I believe the magic of your sighs? *bonk* That's gotta be like the 60s version of "My Neck, My Back". Anyhow I'm giving it a 2 because while it is well done, she basically just did the singing only. And performance is an art, but so is songwriting. Sort of an odd inclusion on the list if you ask me.

Rating: 5/10 Really glad I didn’t miss this one before I died

Another day, another cover album.

The songs are nice but one was enough.

Standard covers of 60s pop songs including three from Burt Bacharach. I don't understand the excitement when the original versions were better. While it's true that she may be a precursor to Adele, it's not a compliment.

achei melhor do que eu pensei que fosse achar

It is well performed and I enjoyed it. You Don’t Own Me is prob my fave. With that said, I struggle with rating a collection of covers. Kind of like a greatest hits or live albums. So I’m rating down for that. There were also a few songs towards the back I didn’t like and skipped. 2.5 but Dusty gets the round down.

Boring af

very uh 60’s. not for me

Felt very disjoint. The motifs felt repetitive. The deep singing voice was good and I connected with some songs but it was a miss more often than not.
