Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Alright album

I never much cared for this album. I saw the tour for it in a cavernous arena and any subtlety to the material was lost in the rafters.

an album that starts out very mid, randomly offers a 5/5 banger and then turns good

Some bangers, some wild song. Mother was something else 😂

= the Beatles

Theee stars for overexposure.

This whole album was fun and interesting. Jazz pop fusion is the move.

Not my favorite Police album but their biggest commecial success.

Okay but not really my thing.

Experimental. Variety of instruments and sounds, more so than Regatta De Blanc

It’s considered their best album and it definitely has some of their best songs on it. But as with all Police albums, there’s a fair bit of filler. When it’s good it’s great, but some of it is just awful as well 3

Enjoyed this album, good variety

Good songs but I can never get into the whole album. Will have to listen again sometime.

As a preamble, I bought Outlandos ‘ on pre-order, then the next 2, but Ghost’ was a bargain bin £0.99, and this was a 4-for-£1.00 CD buy. Original impression was that it was an album too far - they split after this - although it was allegedly down to Sting hubris rather than them being idealess. ….. Not idealess - Some great tracks but too much filler, which was always evident - since Peanuts. Side 1 is so poor they put the only good track on it twice. Sting allowing Spitting Image to stab Thatcher’s election victory with Every Breath’, will ensure he remains exalted, and it remains a firm favourite track (on numerous personal slow playlists). King of Pain is great, Murder By Numbers is very good, but then…. Not a great album.

Never been a big fan of The Police, but they do have a few great songs. Goes without saying that "Every Breath You Take" is the standout on this album.

Last half of the album much better than the first. First half caused anxiety.

Everything has already been said about "Mother", by just about everyone. You have to actively work through the first half of the album to get to more familiar ground. Weird mix, can't get myself to give it a 4.

every breath you take is a masterpiece, the rest is good enough

Hade inte självmant satt på albumet men inte protesterat om de sattes på i bakgrunden tror jag?? Mother åker rakt in i biblioteket - kul text å lite mer punkigt, najs!

The second half is great pop - the first half much less so

I dont really get this list, what do you base the "must listen" part, this isn't outstanding, it's just an average album, maybe with the exception of "every breath you take" bu the police is not remarkable at all...

My least favourite Police album, enjoyable but not that great.

The three singles are good, but I did not like the rest. 3 stars or C.

great album

The opening track was great but the second half was definitely stronger than the first. Favorite song: Murder by Numbers Least favorite: Mother

Good, but not as good as the earlier Police albums. Sure, Every breath you take is a massive hit, but other than that the flow is a little bit dull.

It's funny how the Spotify streaming numbers almost always reflect how good a song is. How 3 million people listened to "Mother" is beyond me. Just awful. The Synchronicity songs are good. Every Breath You Take is obviously incredible, but doesn't fit with the flow of the album. After that song the album gets into a pretty good groove, but then the last song isn't very good again. Happy I listened. Won't listen again.

I love Every Breath You Take. Without that song, this album is probably a 2 for me. 3/5

I’ve never been a big fan of The Police or Sting. His voice gets to be a little grating after awhile. I, of course, knew Every Breath You Take. I did enjoy this much more than a lot of the albums I’ve had to listen to recently.

I haven't listened to this for some time so it is interesting to re-visit it. A very inconsistent album. There is some complete dross 'Mother'/'Walking in Your Footsteps' and some gems 'King of Pain'/'Every Breath You Take'/'Wrapped Around Your Finger'. The highs are very high, and the lows are very low. I think that garners it a 3/5.

Somehow both interesting & boring.

The first boxset I ever owned was from the Police. So many amazing hits--hell, this album has so many amazing hits. And then there's MOTHER. Honestly, the A-side is so much more miss than hit. Would I listen to again? Only the B-side.

This was fine. It was probably in the top 100 albums of the 80s because the 80s was a fucking drought of creativity and originality.

I was about to chalk this up as more well-crafted 80s pop that I just don't have a taste for, but then "Mother" started. I had to check that I was still listening to the same album. It sounds like it would be more at home on a Birthday Party record than here. It at least made me think I should listen to this album a little more closely to see if there are any other interesting surprises. There were not.

So interesting to me that one of their most popular, catchy songs came from their most experimental album. Very cool but pretty out there at times

This was slightly disappointing. Maybe I dont like this artist as much as I thought i would. The song mother is maybe one of the worst songs ive had to sit through. The rest has good moments and okay moments, but that song is one id take away from the record Im going 3.

Si es muy 80tera

A hearty and flavorful meal, definetly an essential of any music fans diet. A strong 3/5

Pretty cool. Nice bass licks

Every Breath You Take is probably the reason this album is in here in the first place. This is a fine album, but I wouldn't put it in my top 100 I don't think. I don't hate it as background music, but I don't think I'll ever actively listen to it ever again.

Kinda mid tbh…king of pain is good, every breath you take is a classic ofc. Other than that…eh. That Mother song was pretty weird too ngl.

Were they on drugs making this? I enjoyed Reggatta De Blanc, so imagine my shock when I heard Mother! This album was weird. You had terrible songs, mediocre songs and then an absolute banger (Every Breath You Take) all mixed in together Choices were made here... and not good ones 3 ⭐️

This was weird at points, but in a fun way! The unique instrumentation and reggae influences contributed to the quirky feel. A few tracks fell short or were forgettable, namely Mother and Murder by Numbers.

Solid 80s classic with several great songs. ‘Mother’ is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard, and is completely jarring with the rest of the album.

The police have so many more songs than I thought they did

Pulsing w Copland’s insistent beats and accompanied by complicated yet throbbing bass lines - yet there are a few clunkers that fall flat

This was my first album from The Police that I have listened to. I think my exposure to them was postponed since Sting's solo career was taking off when I was growing up and I find that not to be my style. Hearing this album feels like it is kind of a segue into that career. There are a few songs I know which are hits. I will note the first half flows really well. That said I think there are other albums of theirs that I still have yet to hear completely, that I feel I might like a little more.

Alright. One song called "Mother" stood out from the rest of the album, but not necessarily in a good way. "Every Breath You Take" is the standout song. Might be a four but I am writing a few days later and realising it did not make a big impression.

Sting is at his self-indulgent best yet again

Pretty good.

Very easy listening, engaging and well produced. It just doesn't have a lot of highs, seems a little mid album, but enjoyable.

+King of Pain +Miss Gradenko

Listened to it on my drive to New Jersey from Pittsburgh. Not bad driving music or music in general

First album (cassette) I got as a kid. Brings back memories but I definitely like their other albums more today.

Second half is held up massively by ‘Every Breath You Take’. Rest is pretty good! Also ‘Mother’ defender here, I won’t hear a word said against it.

After the aural turd that is Reggatta de Blanc I really wasn't looking forward to this album. However, Synchronicity, while still not being something I'd choose to listen too, is miles better than that heap of shit.

Parts of this album are fantastic. I really enjoy “Synchronicity II”. Other parts of the album kinda fall flat. Makes sense that this was the band’s final effort. Seems like they were running out of steam. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Some good, some ok

Strictly a Best Of band for me up until now, but this was pretty good

I have to be honest that I only knew the creepy stalking/voyeurism song "Every Breath You Take" from the greatest hits albums and radio play. But was surprised very much by the very new wave songs it's a nice album and not offensive to the ears. But like most of The Police, good songs from a good band, not terrible, not great just middle of the road.

Classic showcase of sting’s style, some nice riffs and background in the tracks with his voice standing out. Murder by numbers is a good representation of this album. 3.5

Bekannteste Titel sind „Every Breath You Take“, „King of Pain“, „Wrapped Around Your Finger“ und „Synchronicity II“. Der Sound ist glatter und stärker synthetisch geprägt als auf früheren Alben, wobei Stings Songwriting zunehmend dominiert. Trotz der internen Spannungen gelang der Band ein präzise produziertes, vielschichtiges Werk, das Texttiefe mit Radiotauglichkeit verbindet. Ein klanglich und thematisch geschlossenes Album, das The Police mit Würde verabschiedet – brillant komponiert, kühl inszeniert und nachhaltig prägend.

classic

I don't like having a Police record

Half singles half filler but the singles are fire.

Some of it very bad, some of it surprisingly good. But just painfully average overall as I’ve come to expect with this lot now.

goodish album, a bit creepy today

Hard to divorce this from its lute-strumming tantric master of a lead singer, but these songs are catchy. Also it's only now I'm hearing the similarities between the Police and U2.

Weirder than I expected it to be! Like Mother is verrry out there - kinda loved it though. Synchronicity II and Wrapped Around Your Finger were other highlights. The rest of it was nice but didn't necessarily stand out. Maybe 3.5 stars.

carino, ma non credo siano molto il mio genere, nonostante due o tre classici

This was weirder than I expected. The second half was what I expected, that’s the Police sound I’ve heard in passing. But the first half has some different stuff on it. I wish this ranking system was 1-10 because I gave Bowie’s Low a 3 yesterday and this I’m also giving a 3 but it’s closer to a two and a half, and Low is closer to 4 than 3 but wasn’t quite a 4 for me.

Slightly experimental experimental album from rock legends The Police. I would have rated this album higher if not for [Mother] existing. It's a fun time for sure.

Fyrri parturinn fannst mér ekkert frábær en náði sér svo à strik seinni partinn

Kann að meta þetta sem plötu. Samt slatti þarna sem mér fannst aðeins of langur eða ekki grípandi. Opnunarlagið frábært 🙏

When I think about 80's pop, I think about very loud and artificially inflated music, and I had the impression that The Police music would be the same and that is the reason why I had very low expectations about it. Surprisingly for me, this record turned out to be more quite than expected and very organic, and I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would. This album feels sophisticated. In part it may be thanks to have a very controled sound volume, but the composition and ideas are also very ambitious. It is catchy and filled with complex melodies and rhythms. With that being said, I didn't like the album as much as it might seem. It certainly did not blew my mind and neither I emotionally resonanted with it. I believe it is a nice listen and I'll leave it at that.

First half sounds like a bunch of Police outtakes that would have been fine if they'd been left on the editing room floor. Then there's MOTHER. A monster of a song. The there are a hunch of songs we've all heard way too many times. Which stands as a testament to how well they did what they did. But it's also okay they stopped after this.

Synchronicity II is a great song. EBYT is overplayed to death of course but a good song. Wrapped Around Your Finger is pretty solid. Much of the rest of the album bores me or annoys me, honestly. Never been a huge Police fan though, just listen to a select few songs.

Interesting one with a few classics. Wasn’t aware of how varied the police’s sound was back in the day. Almost had a modest mousy sound to them at times.

Getting poppy here, not their best work

Not bad but not really my thing. Synchronicity II is pretty cool. Every Breath You Take seems out of place in the album.

I‘m synchronized now

Certainly impressed by the drumming on some tracks and it's interesting to hear the melting pot of influence. The occasional cool bass line too. However some tracks are real misses ("Mother" especially). Overall it's good but I don't think I would listen to it routinely.

It wasn’t awful! Can’t imagine ever listening to it again but that is really high praise for a Sting record

I liked it more than I expected to, specially considering how much I disliked the first track. The rest of the album was mostly a nice surprise

Прекрасная группа и прекрасный альбом, но мне как-то не по сердцу. Есть некоторые чудесные моменты и ходы.

meget forskellige genre blandet.

The Police's final album is a tale of two sides: eclectic, rhythmic post punk on the first side and sleek, 80's pop on the second. Despite the musical prowess of their members, the second side is much better. On the first side, "Walking in Your Footsteps" has really satisfying percussion but awful lyrics, from asking a brontosaurus if we'd be dumb for using the atom bomb to the creature/future rhyme. Tracks 3 through 5 aim to push the band past their usual sound, but they either don't work or don't fit into the album. The second side however is beautifully written, with four essential Police songs. Yes it has their Big Hit, but "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is been better. Altogether it's an album that's more interesting than their previous work but which still confirms they're a singles band.

Not a huge fan of Sting's voice, but some of the music was pretty cool. 6/10

Favourite Track: King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger Least Favourite Track: Mother

This is probably the worst Police album (imo), but it needs to be talked about more these days what an incredible run they had in such a short amount of time. (A strong 3.5)

This album was very surprising to me. I only knew the one hit off it. I imagine people buying it on the strength of Every Breath You Take back in the day being just as surprised by the boudless experimentation, unusual chord progressions and sometimes borderline dissonance of the rest of the songs. The musical adventurousness is admirable, but I don't think I'll often return to this album. I might check out their other stuff, though.

The gap between the great songs and the not so great songs is pretty vast. I’m not a huge Police fan but some tracks here are just undeniably good.

An album I remember my parents and their friends playing in my youth. Not an every week listen, but some songs that are nostalgic and still hold up.

***An ok album

No surprise that the singles were great. Little surprise that the rest was mostly forgettable, if pleasant, filler.

Monster singles surrounded by some of the worst filler I've ever heard... Mother is perhaps one of the worst songs ever recorded. 3.5 on the strength of the string of singles, rounded down because everything else was mid to awful.

in music school, one of my piano skills benchmark exams required me to learn to play + sing this song and that choice of rep still fascinates me years later

Album was ok. I think there are better songs from the Police. Murder by Numbers was extremely good, glad I was introduced

Can't say I'm a huge fan after one listen, and that listen being while I was working. May need to re-listen, but first impressions aren't great.

It's good, has some classics here and the worst songs aren't bad at all

This album has always been hit or miss for me. It has some absolute classics (synchronicity, every breath you take, king of pain) and some that just don't work for me. But it's still overall a jam

Think Sting absolutely lost it on this album - refer to 'Mother'. But I do like a bit of the Police

I like The Police, but in the 20 or so years since I bought this particular album, I think I've come to accept that I mostly just like the hits. I remember picking this up in like 2001 or something because they kept playing Synchronicity II in the store I worked at, and I was always excited to hear it. I still love that song. But then I got it home and just... it's fine. Every Breath You Take is clearly the biggest song here, and I'm pretty well over that one. King of Pain is good, Murder by Numbers is fun, but the rest of the album cuts don't do much for me.

A mediocre album overall. It’s fine to listen to but it’s obvious that the hunger and energy The Police had shown in their earlier albums had largely dissipated by ‘83. There are some standout tracks on here such as the two Synchronicity tracks and, of course, Every Breath You Take. Murder by Numbers makes for a decent album closer. By far the worst (and most baffling) track has to be Mother, a song horrible at first listen and I imagine will continue to be horrible in any subsequent re-listens. Honourable mention goes to Walking in your Footsteps, a song about dinosaurs (Why???). 5/10

Some good tunes and some very weird decisions (Sting singing every song in a key too high for his voice, using fake patois, whatever the hell "Mother" is)

Liked the album, some good, some forgettable.

Not their best

Growing up my sister and I would always call "Every Breath You Take" the 'Creepy Stalker Song', I still stand by that title. Still a pretty good song though. Kind of a mediocre album overall though. Gets lifted by the 3 billion stream song for sure.

Pretty classic Police, covers a lot of the big hits but also a cohesive album

Sting is classic

This is an interesting one- the A side is wildly inconsistent. The “synchronicities” are both pretty great, but the songs in between them are either forgettable or bizarre. Then you have the B side which is wall to wall bangers. So weird. Was it a power move by Sting? Idk these guys are suing each other right now which makes me sad. THREE STARS

not bad

It was okay. Miss Gradenko and King of pain are awesome. The rest are just okay.

First time listening to a full Police album and I enjoyed it for the most part. Its another album I wish I could rate 3.5 stars because its good but not good enough to warrant a full 4/5 to me

the Police are definitely one of the bands that i know i like, but i don't ever listen to their full albums. so got to hear a lot of songs i've never listened to!

I get strong beach vibes from the Police. Maybe it's the vocals? Standout track: King of Pain

No message in a bottle? Boooo

Some good hits. Overall fine. Not going to rush to listen to the album again, but some sones already have imon playlists

Cool and enjoyable but doesn’t stand out a whole lot to me.

Immediately not enjoying this mix. That snare drum bribed the engineer to put it center stage. Sting is way back in the mix, and they use a lot of indistinct pads that make a few elements (snare, bass guitar sometimes) stick out. Not enjoying Sting here, either. His voice sounds really thin, and he's way back in the mix, making him sound even more strained than normal. This one is saved by the singles, but it's not an album I enjoyed otherwise. So a 3.

This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Besides "Synchronicity" I and II, I disliked the first side. Some songs are kind of bland, and the other ones like "Mother" and "Miss Gradenko" didn't stick the landing for me. The second half gets much much better. Sting's voice is great and super distinctive, there are some pretty nice basslines, and I like the tone of the guitar with the effects, particularly the atmospheric delay they put in some songs. My favourite songs were "Synchronicity I", "Wrapped Around Your Finger" and "Murder By Numbers". I disliked "Mother". I'm all for weird/experimental music, but I felt this one was all over the place and just didn't work, the manic singing and the weird melody are too on the nose and overall I didn't like it. "Miss Gradenko" wasn't good either, kind of bland, the vocals are a bit too thin and I didn't like the bassline either. I feel like this one could've been easily a 4 or a 5 with better sequencing, working some songs better or taking them out. "Murder By Numbers" which is excellent, was just a bonus track, and I felt it was a better closer than "Tea In The Sahara". I've read a lot about this album being great, and while I see where it comes from, I feel it has room for improvement. This is like a 3.5 for me.

It's OK. Not memorable, has good moments. But, overall, its meh. The Police has done better. Sting has done better.

This starts off pretty slow and then has some of the jams we all know (King of Pain!). Overall okay album.

Really does not get good until the back half, some great songs but averages out to a 3 for me

kind of cruised thru -- seemed okay but nothing memorable

Synchronicity is a bit of a grab-bag of a Police album. “Synchronicity II” is a great example of the band at the height of its powers, taut and propulsive and adventurous. “Mother” is a throwaway. The trio of Side 2 hits are world beating, while “Tea in the Sahara” sounds like it belongs on Sting’s first solo record and just kills the momentum. So while it definitely has its merits, I don’t think this is the strongest Police album.

This album is way weirder than I remember. Technically admirable. Musically...pretty good. Bonus star for the ridiculously unneeded number of album color variations. Synchronicity II is also a pretty great song.

They achieved synchronicity for sure, it’s tight as hell. Alas I found it samey and repetitive

it is alright

This would be better if the recording didn't sound like trash.

Good stuff

Really enjoyed the album. The melodies are diverse, you can hear that it's the same artist and the lyrics are about something. edit: changed it to a 3 after listening to it again. Only really liked one song.

Didn’t listen to the whole thing. Was poppy but didn’t hook me in so much

Was doing French homework at the same time so kind of became background music but still obviously a very good album

I liked some of it. But I didn’t care for other songs.

I thought I would really like this one but it wasn’t for me.

What a very strange mix of music. I know the police but only ever heard the same song that any radio station ever puts on and thought that was their sound but these guys evidently try lots of new things.

I found the first 5 songs of the album to be either uninteresting or too out there for me. Mother was a difficult listen. However, I really liked the last 5 songs. Every Breath You Take is such a classic. Some of the others sounds right up there with it. Mixed bag of an album.

Muy básico. Every Step You Take es un clásico, pero el resto de las canciones no me fueron memorables ni muy interesantes musicalmente. Es un buen álbum de los 80, pero no definió ningún género.

Not bad, some familiar stuff, some new to me, some interesting, but not all

7/10 Synchronicity started out promising, but fell a little flat towards the end for me. overall though, a pretty good listen. I love the tribal influence on Walking in Your Footsteps, and wish they fully embraced it for the entire album!! it's a lot more interesting!! this album is categorized as New Wave, but to be honest, I don't hear much of it. top three tracks: • Walking in Your Footsteps • Every Breath You Take • Synchronicity II least favourite track: • King of Pain

I love the Police and Stuart Copeland is one of my all time favorite drummers. 3 stars cause there are way better Police Albums than this last recorded album by the band that I pray are on this list and would earn the honorary 4 or 5 stars.

First time listening to a Police album. Don't think it'll happen again. What on earth is Mother? The good vibes, like Murder by Numbers, are negated by things like Synchronicity I. I'll give this a three for it being ground-breaking, I guess...?

Every Breath You Take is a super hit.

A conductor is nothing without his orchestra as is a sandwich is more about the construction and accompaniments than the key filling. Every Breath You Take is probably the primary filling in this album sandwich. But wafer thin ham and mighty wight doth not make a picnic I hear you say. Fortunately the songs surrounding it are those overlooked ingredients that are taken for granted. - Synchronicity II - The top of the warm crusty roll - Every Breath You Take - The alpha filling, understandably taking all the glory - King of Pain - A slice of fresh tomato a perfectly ripe taste of summer - Wrapped Around Your Fingers - Butter, that Normandy stuff that has the rock salt in it - Tea In The Sahara - The bottom of that roll. You can't build a cathedral without a strong foundation, and no one wants a soggy bottom I know what you're thinking, "why would tomato go under the primary filling?" and you're right. But it's just a metaphor ok, replace with your preferred ingredients. Rest of the album was pretty crap especially compared to pretty much every other Police album. Particular shout out to Mother for giving me TMD.

Even though it has a few weak spots (including Jazz-rock influences which I am not fond of) and doesn’t include my favorite songs from the band, this album is, to me, The Police’s best work and one of the most inspiring records of the 80s.

Being in a band is tough enough already, but being in a band with an insufferable narcissist - who is also really, really, really good at what he does - must’ve been incredibly difficult. No wonder Copeland and Sumner came to blows. Anyhow, Synchronicity is an odd duck of a record, famously so. The first side/half is mostly dreck, including the paint by numbers Sting compositions that lead it off. Whereas the second side is possibly the finest hour of any band. Wrapped and Breath are 2 of the songs I most associate with the first things I can remember ever hearing (thanks MTV) back in 1983. I can still see the room where I was, feeling weirdly frightened by both videos, but also kinda into this music thing. Minus Synchronicity II, the first side is abysmal, total 1. Second side? Maybe a 4 or a 5. The book on Synchronicity is that this is when Sting decided it was time to be Sting, solo artist, which is understandable, but he never topped the second side run. His solo career has its moments, but it’s largely background soft rock, playing to an audience perhaps more infatuated with Sting the heartthrob rock star who is also an intellectual or vice versa. What would Copeland and Summers do with the jazz/world music-leanings of solo Sting? They’re both incredibly accomplished, maybe even more so, but probably not as cheap. Would Sting have written material more in line with the Police hits instead of gravitating to adult contemporary? Dude could write a perfect pop song and has several in his Police catalog, but once freed from having to make compromises...

DÜÜÜÜÜDAAAADÜÜÜÜDAAAADÜÜÜDAAA synchronicity? more like synchronicithree

liked songs: Synchronicity II, Every Breath You Take, Wrapped Around Your Finger Pretty good overall, not every track is a standout. Mother is not good. 3.5

Can’t deny this group’s talent and impact. But this album fell short of my expectations given how much I’ve heard about it over the years.

A pretty dang good album! I’d go back to it! I didn’t enjoy as much as I thought I would, but still liked it!

Not a bad Police album. Not my favorite record from them, but Stewart Copeland smokes on this record. He’s in nearly everyone’s list of all-time Top Ten Drummers, including mine.

Sychrin

Iconic but not for me

I can’t see why this album was so successful. Three good songs, one which was overplayed on the radio, and the hysterical song Mother!

I like the Police but didn't really love this album.

I am sick and don’t have the brainpower to write a thoughtful review. First half was decent (some cool synthy stuff) and second half was more meh pop.

A couple good singles from this album. But not great

The second half is way better than the first half. Mother is also a vocal(and instrumental) outlier, as if they ripped it from another album. It has music videos that add nothing to the experience. It seems to be largely about connections, but they managed to make themselves sound like stalkers. Radiohead's creep is self aware, every breath you take isn't.

A side is kinda patchy after the title track, but the album picks up just in time on the second side

Can you believe the drummer of this band made the soundtrack to Spyro?

Not their best work, but it's always a pleasure to listen to the magic between them, especially the unbelievable Stewart Copeland on drums!

Always like hearing the police... well the band, not the law enforcement so much

I really appreciate this album for being as weird as it is. That being said, most of the weird stuff was surprisingly just ok! Didn't feel crazy about this in the end.

Absolute curveball of an album. You go in expecting some 'Roxannes' and 'Message In A Bottle's, but instead they keep hitting you with experimental cuts that don't always succeed in being super interesting. Sting randomly unhinges on 'Mother' which sounds straight out of Disc 2 of The Wall, except that without any narrative buildup, it's just kinda jumpscares you for no reason. When 'Every Breath You Take' finally shows up it's a breath of fresh air, finally a familiar sound out of these guys. idk, this was honestly a fairly enjoyable listen, but I AM disappointed that their deep cuts really don't hold up to the strength of their greatest hits. Standouts: O My God • Every Breath You Take • Wrapped Around Your Finger

I had a strong memory of liking this album before but I definitely didn't enjoy it as much this time. The normal songs on here are great, but their attempts at novelty did not land with me and weakened the album rather than strengthening it, in my opinion.

Synchronicity II is worth the price of the album. I bought it for 8 bucks so … There is a mega hit and sublime pop such as King of Pain. But there is also dumb moments like Mother and a few boring spots as well. Overall an interesting album but I’d be just as happy with half of these songs.

Wow, what a mixed bag this was. Side a of this LP is weak. Mother is a standout weird song and really feels like a record scratch moment that makes you check if you are still listening to the same album. Side b is way stronger. Every breath you take, king of pain and wrapped around your finger is a nice run of enjoyable songs. If i put a lot of emphasis on those good tracks and let them do very heavy lifting 3 stars sounds okay.

I've never listened to this album, despite it being one of the seemingly most recognizable covers for 40 years. It was in every BMG/Columbia House catalog in the 90's, every used CD section in the 2000's, and seems like it's on every important/must listen list, etc. etc. A little underwhelmed by the first 5 tracks. Mother sounds like a direct lift from Pink Floyd's Wall from just a couple years earlier. Listening a couple times helps me gain appreciation for the others, but not really that one. But then Synchronicity II wraps up the A-side on a high note and launches us into a B-side that is CLASS. King of Pain, Every Breath You Take, and Wrapped Around Your Finger all in a row - c'mon. So good. But to be fair, they were also the tracks I already knew because they were hits. I enjoyed Tea in the Sahara as well, but could do without the CD bonus track Murder by Numbers. I feel like 3 is a shade to low, but I feel like 4 is too high for my own personal taste. 3.5 falling to 3 because I'm still mostly just drawn to the hits.

Its a classic, but I was never a huge fan. Its very meh to me

Didn’t like it all at first but it was pretty good actually, need to give a couple songs another listen Also mother is so weird

I remember being at live aid that day when Sting and Phil collins were singing every breath you take… Unfortunately the moment was ruined when Phil messed up the song lyrics :(

wow té cançons molt i molt bones i altres q son fatals jajaj pro en general sting mola ells tb i tenen estil. ns quina nota mb posar-li maybe 3 estrelles es poc pero 4 es molt i ns li e stic donant 4 ja a coses MOLT top pero mha agrdat lalbum, mel tornaria a escoltar.

The Police remind me of The Doors in a way, that is, when they are good they are really good. It's just a shame about all the bits in between.

Fine, but it was annoying to listen to “Mother” as a woman. I don’t really care for your mommy issues.

Some good songs and some crap—I’m less and less interested in the band and its music.

Enjoyed some songs more than others. Sombre and some of the lyrics are sweet. Not the biggest fan of all their music, but some of it is quite good. More like 2 and 1/2 stars, but here’s 3 x

Would not buy.

Heard of the band, heard (bits of) some of their songs before. Not bad, but I think I was mostly only enjoying having familiarity.

I expected better, but it wasn’t awful. I feel like it’s incredibly overrated, but still not the worst. It looks like I’m looking at the definition of three stars again.

Pretty solid - don't know if I'd listen again though? Going with a 3 but it's very close to a 4.

Mother good psych song. Every breath and synchronicity 2 are highlights

Большинство песен как-то не зашло, хотя есть и безусловный хит. 6 из 10.

Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit. The good outweighs the bad, but there's some genuine shockers in this album. Happy to stick to the classics.

Imagine releasing your final album and people in 40 years are like "Oh yeah, The Police, they had that super popular song - Mother." Good thing Every Breath You Take was on here too. Overall, fine? Sting's voice is dope and carries some mediocre songs, but looking at the Spotify streaming numbers you can tell that basically the first half of the album is fairly forgettable. Honestly, everything other than Every Breath You Take and Wrapped Around Your Finger falls into that category.

Not a diehard Police fan but this was a solid album. I knew several of the tracks, ‘Every Breath you Take’ is probably their biggest hit. 3.25/5

Aika hyvää kuunneltavaa, vähän suureellista mut ei haittaa. Tuntuu kyllä, että kappaleet on kerätty vähän sieltä sun täältä, mut tuotannolla on sulautettu ihan kivasti yhteen. Sen Motherin ois kyllä voinu skipata.

Solo Sting > The Police

Some absolute 10s, some embarrassingly bad.

I feel like i have a lot to say but also very little to say about this album. I liked it, it was very enjoyable, but i feel like it didn’t really speak to me? I’m not sure how to describe it other than it lacked that spark that takes an album from good to great. Which isn’t to say it’s not a great album, i can recognize that it objectively is, it just wasn’t for me. However, there were still some standouts to me. Synchronicity I, King Of Pain, and Murder By Numbers were some of my favourite tracks off the album, especially Synchronicity I. Synchronicity I felt very unique and worked incredibly well as an introduction to the album, and King Of Pain and Murder By Numbers while tracks that didn’t necessarily surprise me were just nice to listen to. Mother is probably my least favourite as while I wouldn’t skip it nor did I dislike it, I would not listen to it outside of the album. Of course I can’t neglect to mention the classic that is Every Breath You Take. I swear I always forget how creepy that song is, definitely a stalker anthem. 7.6/10, don’t take relationship advice from The Police (search 40% of cops to learn more)

favorite: wrapped around your finger I find this album to be a little bit of a mixed bag. I definitely like the end more than the beginning. *3.5

Overrated thats all i can think about. I heard one other good song on this one, but Every Breath is so much above everything else on the album it’s insane. Some songs just dont belong on it AT ALL. mid 3

First half meh Second half fire

What is up with that Mother track. Goofy!

Really good!

What a strange album... Definitely a good listen, with some interesting songs in the mix

Don't really have time for a review, but I quite like it, especially "mother"

Lots of different elements blended together that make this album decent, but not excel in any way.

It kinda sounds as one would expect 80's new wave to sound. Mother really does not fit on this thing. One thing to appreciate is the occasional use of odd time signatures like 3/4 and 7/8 without it sounding intrusive. We'll use it as a benchmark for other stuff like this to come.

I like the album more in the later half than the first half. Interesting instrumentals but the whole overall sound just didn't "connect" with me.

hate the band name, liking the songs so far Walking in Your Footsteps, Mother

Highly polished but occasionally a bit soulless. Lots of cool musical ideas.

Had het nog een halve ster erbij gegeven als dat kon

It's okay.

Synchronicity must be the strongest Police album. They do a great job incorporating reggae with new wave and rock sounds while making catchy music. The album started off rather unforgettable, but perhaps that is simply because the heavy singles are on the album's second side. Regardless, the "Synchronicity" instrumentals tie the album together, which is a feature I love; an album's flow cannot be overrated or under-emphasized. 3.5 but I'm not motivated to round up because the beginning of the album just wasn't interesting enough.

This album was pretty good, but considering the songs that are high points of this album, I anticipated liking the whole album more than I actually did. But in reality, the biggest songs on the album remained on top and the lesser known songs ended up being a bit forgettable.

Shit until Mother, some bangers after that

On rytmikästä ja sanottaisko eteläamerikkakaisiakin saundeja. Laulajan kiekuminen alkaa ottaa jälleen aivoon hetken päästä niin levyllinen käy aika raskaaksi.

I struggle when albums don’t have consistent themes or tones. This one started with the police vibe I like, then “mother” and “murder by numbers” were very random and true crime adjacent, which I’m all for. Then out of seemingly nowhere is “every breath you take” and wrapped around your finger and we all know what direction they went in after those songs took off. It’s like when sugar ray was a speed metal band but had one random soft CA song on their album and that changed the their sound completely. It was interesting to hear where it happened for the police.

Album kicks off in the second half. It’s nearly like two EPs thrown together to form an album.

Spoko, przyzwoite. Every breath you take jest na tej płycie

The 80s were well underway, and you can hear it in the production. The Police were huge and Sting's arrogance was reaching it's peak! But I have to say 'Every Breath You Take', 'King Of Pain', and 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' is a great run of songs. Good enough to grab the album an extra star!

Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Not overly memorable besides Every Breath You Take.

Solid 80s rock, I just feel very neutral about it overall. King of pain and every breath you take were the only two tracks that really stood out to me

Overall quite enjoyed it but didn’t find it particularly exciting. Actually did like Mother but it felt very out of place on the album so was a bit jarring. Other than Mother, it’s the sort of album I wouldn’t mind being on in the background but I wouldn’t seek it out. Fav song: Synchronicity II - also liked Murder by Numbers and Every Breath You Take Least fav: O My God - found this one particularly uninteresting

Feel like Mother should have stayed between Andy Summers and his therapist... Some very enjoyable tracks (plus the iconic Every Breath You Take) but overall just fine. Favourite: Tea In The Sahara Least: Mother

The second half really salvages this album. Songs: Every Breath You Take, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Fingers, Murder by Numbers

I never expected to listen to this album in its entirety. And I don't think I will actively choose to play it again. But it made nice background music while I did some housework. My favorite song was Wrapped Around Your Finger

Not really my thing. I always want to like The Police and Sting more than I actually do. The hits are definitely the standouts, but Murder by the Numbers is brutal to sit through.

Lots of sounds and influences happening here. I was surprised, and I was ready to give it a full extra point just for “Every Breath You Take” all on its own. By surprised, I don’t mean that in a good way. What the hell were they doing with “Mother” on that poor track?! I much prefer all the songs with big cheesy Sting vocals, like I was expecting.

Rating: 3 Notable songs: every breath you take Its okay, but pretty flat and unremarkable

I'm sure it was ground breaking for its time. In the context of today it doesn't sound as strong as other options from the era (such as the talking heads).

First half of this album is pretty meh so far. What do you get when you combine creep carnival music and someone with mommy issues? The song Mother. That song is trippy. I wouldn't say I hated that song, but it is certainly disturbing. It took until the second Synchronicity song for this album to turn itself around. That plus the familiar Every Breath You Take bring some juice to the album. The rest of the 2nd half feels closer to the music I'm used to from The Police. I thought this would be a 4 coming into the album, but I'm knocking it down to a High 3 range because of the subpar 1st half of the album.

There's just something about The Police I don't like. They have that creepy sound to them that I don't like, but they also have some really catchy tunes (Wrapped Around Your Finger) that I can't help but singalong to. Better than the last Police album. The ending clap on this album was exactly how I felt.

Wasn't the biggest fan of the last Police album but do enjoy the hits. Enjoying the first few songs. Even though it sounds like they're all recorded in a bathroom which I'm sure is an artistic decision. Mother is absolutely terrifying. Every Breath You Take I've probably heard one too many times in my life and the lyrics creep me out a bit. Feel like I should've liked this more than I did. Going with a 3.

Overall it’s hard for me to like this sound because I don’t think it aged well. Every breath is a classic and it’s very good. Mother is hilarious and actually good I think.

I Every breath you take is a definite banger Not bad, 3/5 time

good album! not doing anything crazy though. cannot listen to king of pain

Overhyped

Like the Police's early stuff far better than this one but you have to give this record it's due as it was a massive commercial success. I enjoyed most of the hits on side 2

Alkupuoli enemmän outoilua, varsinkin Mother joka oli aika psykoosibiisi, mutta loppupuoliskolla parempia kappaleita. Perus rentoa Policea josta tulee vähän reggae fiilis. Ei kuitenkaan mitään erikoista yllätystä tarjonnut. Parhaat: Every Breath You Take, Synchronicity II, King Of Pain

Oh boo. I don’t care about this band at all. The hits have gotten annoying. Roxanne is good for a lark, but it doesn’t even appear on this album. I have no idea what this will sound like, so no need to beef up this into any further. Or should I say “pork?”Is it true that all cops really are bastards? Only one way to find out. Be a minority in a major North American city. Oh. Not that kind of police. The lame 80’s band fronted by the bad (non-wrestling) Sting. Onward and Downward. Synchronicity I - Honestly? Not bad. There is that annoying vocal style, but the robotic persistence of this rhythm isn’t too bad. It has an element of insanity that I kind of enjoy. I didn’t expect this to be subversive in any way, shape or form, so a pleasant start to be sure. Way to go fellas. Walking in Your Footsteps - These guys live for the stalker lifestyle. Hey, Mr. Dinosaur, if you were God’s favourite creature, how come you were decimated by meteors? At least future archeologists made you badass lizard freaks instead of the weird feather behemoths you most likely were. Take that, archeological community. Coming in with my vaguely misremembered and unsourced hot take. This was weird. Not in an entirely awful way. O My God - Bizarre improvisational jazz outro. That’s all I remember from this. I liked that. Mother - More odd horns? Mixed with screeching? I have to be honest, if you told me this was “The Police” I would assume that you were the police and I would start to flush my Flinstone vitamins. There is no way that this is the same band who is writing “Every Step You Take,” or “Roxanne.” Insane in all the best ways. Miss Gradenko - More of a Sandals Resort Commercial type song, but the guitar underneath is extremely interesting. Mixed bag here. Synchronicity II - One of the highest rated songs for the people who use that feature on RYM. The real monsters. The final boss(es) of pseudo-intellectual online discourses. I am but a peon in that world. My infrequent usage of the word “lush” pales in comparison to the verbose kings of internet-based takedowns and praise of music from Tchaikovsky to Cardi B. I don’t get this song, so long may my cocoon of ignorance envelop me and keep me safe from the sounds too esoteric for my banal ear canals. Every Breath You Take - NOOOO. On a quick scan I didn’t see any hits. Bring back “Mother.” Not the RuPaul song, but hell, even that would be an upgrade. Ok. Try to listen to it normally. I can do this. I do like the sinister lyrics and overtones under the guise of a period appropriate love song. It’s been taken and played at face value for so long, that I just can’t see it as anything but radio pap. In that tomb it shall remain. King of Pain - From behind the curtain billows miasmic clouds of black. Growls are heard and the crowd begins to cheer. Worn gladiators tremble. Some begin to run but cannot climb the walls. Finger nails bleed from the jagged stones. Blood starved populace laughs. The opening strains of “King of Pain” plays to signal the arrival of the monarch of misfortune. The gladiators begin to laugh. The curtain drops to reveal an emancipated yoga instructor whose body matches the song. He is poked down and will have to sit out the gladiator battles for 4-6 months with strained rib ligaments. The crowd is confused. Much like myself after sitting through this. Wrapped Around Your Finger - This song sucks. I don’t know if it’s more of the same idea of psychotic lyrics wrapped in a palatable package but the package is far too palatable here. Not enough subversion, and if that is the intended message, maybe tilt the hand just a little bit. Not musical theatre villain levels, but show some level of oddity with the music. Tea in the Sahara - Tea? In the desert? But tea is hot! You guys are NUTS. You know what is ice cold? This song. Colder than an Ice Train hot tag. This thing really fell off a cliff, hey? How they managed that in a desert, I’ll never know. Oh the high dune! Yeah man. This was a real thinker. That’s not my trademark sarcasm. It really was. I expected boiling hatred and disgust to permeate my 1 day late review of Synchronicity but I was pleasantly surprised. The second side wore out its welcome with me, but it never got too painful. One or two really bad songs but overall an album worth listening to. I would say that based on other listening, they hit their artistic peak with this, their final release. “Mother” was a true standout due to it really sounding nothing like anything else here. This is an album worth hearing. Once. But that doesn’t change that I have turned a corner on the police. Maybe Blue Lives Do Matt.. BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG STOP RESISTING. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Mother

More weird and interesting and experimental than I anticipated. Still not for me though. Veers too much on the cheesy side of overproduced 80s pomposity. I think mainly due to Sting's vocals. Too smooth and confident.

a good re-visit of this album for me, haven't heard it in a long time, still stands up well.

Mother saved this album from a 2 star I made it through that far It's easy to hate on Sting But it just gets a bit dull No fulfilment in full Not an album that will cling

Some goodies, but some mid songs in between…probably a 3 but a weak 3?

10/1001. confession #1: i'm an 80s fan boy. Confession #2: I've nevee listened to a full Police album. The hits have turned me away, and what a lost it seems, at least I felt that during the first few songs. But more the album went on the more I was ok with initial confession #2. There was a sense of a story - a dramtatic curve in the beginning (almost like a pop proge album) which faded away. Ok, so that's not what an album must need, right? But somehow while many of the non-hits were interesting they are overshadowed by the hits. And at least I have become so comfortably numb (yes i know a pink floyd not a police quote) to the hit(s) that they feel like every breath or daily bread.

Pretty fun, although it honestly I didn't like it as much as their other album on this list, Reggatta De Blanc.

Drums are great. Vocals okay. Loved every breath you take of course.

The two eponymous songs, plus “Every Breath You Take,” alone are enough to earn 3-4 stars. “King of Pain” keeps it close, but most of the other songs are forgettable skips (including “Murder by Numbers”).

Never a big sting fan but some nice sounds

Eh it was fine. Had a few song that I knew but nothing crazy.

If it was less the peculiar ideas of the first half and more of the strong pop craft of the second half, it could just be perfect.

This one is like the Batman villain Two Face: the first half of the album is just okay venturing on ugly, but the second half is transcendent.

Da da da

Favorites: Synchronicity I & II, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger I'm so torn on this album. The highs are very high and the lows are just okay to mediocre to me. What makes it worse is that the biggest song from the album - Every Breath You Take - is probably one of the weakest cuts from the album in my opinion. It's still good, and it is a piece of my collection that I'm happy to own, but as a whole it's not as strong as other new wave bands from that era.

This has some high points but overall a very inconsistent police album.

The only track I recognized right away was Every Breath You take. Walking in your footsteps is alright, and O My God. King of Pain is probably my favourite track on this album. Murder by Numbers is OK. Otherwise I'm not really a huge fan of this. Not sure if it's just that I don't love the Police or that this isn't their best album--I don't mind Roxanne, Message in a Bottle etc. 3/5

This album is a lot like tantric sex. It’s pleasant but it goes on and one without ever coming to a climax. After you’ve experienced it once it’s a bit of a bore.

It was alright. I preferred regetta de blanc quite a bit more but it was still quite a nice album. 3 stars

Not bad, a bit new age jammy in places. Lots of repetition. Don’t think I’ll relisten.

I’m not sure I understand the allure of The Police. I’ve listened to this album 5 times and I still walk away not impressed. The music is good, Sting’s vocals are great, the songwriting is okay. I’m just not a fan I guess. Overall good album but must hear… not so sure. Favorite songs “Wrapped Around Your Finger”, “Walking In Your Footsteps”, and “Every Breath You Take”.

Ikikulunut Every Breath You Take ja sekopäinen Mother samalla levyllä.

Why are singing about dinosaurs and having an Oedipus complex . This album took time to get into but some good album tracks. Mother was wild, Synchronicity II and Wrapped Around your finger I enjoyed. Every Breathe You Take I worried would carry the album. I enjoyed it enough but not a standout. TIL Stuart Copeland did the Spyro soundtracks, cute.

Never got into Sting’s fake reggae. Wasn't ever as cool as Paul Simon’s or Vampire Weekend’s. There are some classics on here, but there is also Mother. What the fuck was that?

*Making my mom proud* Honestly, pretty good. More varied, and a bit weirder than I expected. There’s a bit too much Sting “weird reggae” cringe, but hey, at least he’s using his handsomeness for the betterment of humankind.

I expected more from this album. It was weird and different but it wasn’t the banger I expected. Every Breath You Take is a great song and its popularity (though often misguided) is warranted but this album was just very underwhelming.

First thing’s first: when I finished this album I turned on the radio and Every Breath You Take was playing. Weird, that, innit? Anyway, I didn’t mind this album, but I can see why only one of the tracks really gets any continued playtime to a modern audience. There wasn’t much that stood out to me here aside from Every Breath. Everything else was the less interesting side of The Police (at least to my ears). That’s not to say it was a bad listen, it was just generally somewhat neutral.

Easy listening album. Not one I skipped through which is nice.

Oh, yes. The second half of the album is the best. They lost me on Mother.

The Police give off really strong U2 vibes to me. Same general time period and both from the UK. New-wavey, but also not. Pompous lead singers. Both bands that seem to be something I would like, but that I don’t particularly. This album isn’t bad (except for “Mother” - are you kidding me with this?!) but the Police just aren’t my cup of tea in the Sahara with you.

I find it's incredibly difficult to judge albums that came out in the 60s, 70s, 80s... The technology was different, the era of music was different, what was probably "progressively moving music forward" and challenging the status quo for music at the time just doesn't hit the same when it's been 40 years since the album came out. When I judge this now, I have all this forward knowledge of how music has progressed in 40 years! Mainly this line from the wikipedia page The album was widely acclaimed by critics. Praise centred on its cohesive merging of disparate genres and sonic experimentation to me, it's hard to judge that since music nowadays is all about blending different genres into your own unique style. To me, while I understand this take, I don't agree with it. I love it when genres blend, but when every song sounds completely different than the other, it sounds like a mish-mash and each change of song is so jarring. I feel like there's a better way to do this nowadays (again, comes back to 40 years of music that's been doing this now). I'm nit-picking obviously, there's plenty of gems on this album too. I'm just trying to justify my rating to myself.

kinda weird, most tracks are nothing at all like every breath you take, but some cool melodies/beats nonetheless

it’s very odd which is great. just weird songs to me. overall just not as good as an album as i was expecting. maybe it’s my fault for going into it with expectations. of course the banger every breathe you take.

Not a massive fan of The Police, but the songwriting is solid. I can hear the Talking Heads influence. When 'Mother' came on it made me check we were still on the same album, I guess I didn't think of them as that experimental!

tea in the sahara, murder by numbers, sychronicity two. what is mother ?

Once you hear the reggae influences, the Police become an infinitely funnier band. With the exception of a handful of songs, I've always found the Police to be a prime example of a sound that I'm not particularly interested in hearing, at least in the back half. Not really an admonishment of the quality Rating: 6.5/10 Favorite Song: Synchronicity II

I've never really understood The Police or Sting. They have mostly just been the boring soundtrack to 80's movies in my mind. I will say, though, that I liked some of the less overplayed songs on this album. "Mother," in particular, was fun.

Fav song: Every Breath You Take; Murder by Numbers on the extended cut I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of The Police or Sting. Not sure why. They aren't boring, Sting is a great front man. I guess it doesn't speak to me but also I'm totally fine with them too. They don't make me feel much of anything.

Last song are bangers but the beginning is a bit boring

Synchronicity I et Wrapped arround your finger BANGER Sons un peu experimentaux/retro

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Mother Mother is pretty uh, interesting. I wonder what the thought process is to come up with a song like that.

Light 7. First side was incredible, the second side has the wonderful every breath but every other song is ehhh

Boring, synchronicity 2 was alright

I quite enjoyed it, particularly O My God. Mother reminded me a bit of Talking Heads. The songs on the album after Every Breath You Take all had more listens on Spotify - I wondered if that's just because they get auto-played afterwards :P I probably wouldn't listen to it again

Synchronicity I 3.4 Walking in Your Footsteps 2.6 O My God 3.1 Mother 2.8 Miss Gradenko 3.5 Synchronicity II 3.6 Every Breath You Take 4 King of Pain 3.4 Wrapped Around Your Finger 3.4 Tea in the Sahara 3.3 Score: 3.31

Мне понравилась вторая половина альбома.

Synchronicity I is a cool song. Walking In Your Footsteps is repetitive and sucks. O My God isn't good either. Mother is interesting in a manic way but still not very good. Synchronicity II is the only song I knew prior (aside from Every Breath You Take of course) and it's a great one. Good guitar riffs, good voals, good song structure. Every Breath You Take is a good one. Wrapped Around Your Finger is pretty good. Tea In The Sahara is meh. 4/10 good songs, the rest filler.

This album made a huge splash when it was released back in 1983. There were four singles from it which were played frequently on the radio. Synchronicity Ii is my favorite song on the album, although I never was a big fan of the Police. Overall the album is ok, even though it sounds dated to me now.

Wait, The Police is Sting? Why did I think the Police is Phil Collins?? Do I just constantly mix up Genesis and The Police?? [pause for me to look at my previous Police album review] Turns out: Yes. Maybe because Police and Phil both start with 'P'. They should be called Stinglice. I'll try to remember that in case they have a 3rd album on here. This album started unimpressively, but got better in the second half. It's like a... 3.25 (probably good there's only 5 star-options, I'd go nuts with more). Highlights: 'Synchronicity II', 'Every Breath You Take' (definitely overplayed but still pretty good), 'King of Pain' (good emo character song for Me) Lowlights: 'Mother', both musically and lyrically
