Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Some great songs. And some really strange ones
Agree with others -- the excellent back half of the album can't quite make up for the craziness of the first half. But it comes close.
Back half of album is great. Some songs, I may not have even guessed as the Police if it was a blind listening. Those songs were pretty weird and I hesitate to even call them songs. One in particular (can't remember the name) definitely was not a song and I had to skip. Didn't realize The Police had punk within them.
OK but not blown away
Every breath you take merece at least 1.5 estrellas porque que rolonsontron. 6/10
Synchronicity Spiritus Mundi It took me a long time to appreciate The Police fully, I think I was put off by Sting’s 90s solo stuff, all that banal adult orientated jazz and soul inflected wank. But they are a great band and alongside the big songs there are some absolute bangers in their catalogue. However this is my least favourite of their albums. Synchronicity is a great start though, building on their reggae rock sound with some interesting synths. Walking in your Footsteps kind of signposts where Sting was heading, I really like the first minute or so and then it teeters right on the edge of good and bad, and I’m not sure which side it falls on, I think bad by the end. I like the sequencer experimentation but for some reason I don’t think it works that well with Sting at the controls. O My God has a nice bass line and drums but is a bit underwhelming. Mother is not good. Not good at all. Really terrible. Woeful, and I mean woeful. Miss Gradenko is not great either. Synchronicity II is ok, a bit Police by numbers but at least the guitar gives it a bit of urgency. Every Breath you Take. Undoubtedly a great song, overfamiliar and its kind of been swallowed up in I’ll be Missing You, but just listening in isolation now it is a superbly constructed pop song, that guitar riff, the single repeating piano note and little piano figure and vocals after the first chorus is so good. This very noticeably jumps out as superior to the rest of the songs on the album. I do like King of Pain I feel like the balance of pop vs jazzy noodling is ok on this one. Wrapped Around Your Finger is ok. Tea in the Sahara I really really dislike and Murder by Numbers is one of those pointless forgettable songs. I really like their debut album and Zenyatta Mondatta, but this one veers too close to being an AOR MOR Sting solo album - it doesn’t have the dynamism and excitement of their earlier records. With Summers and Copeland pushed back it loses a lot of what made them great I think. Ultimately it’s somewhere around 2-3, but there are some very good moments that I do like so I’ll go 3, although I’d listen to all their other albums ahead of this ⭐️⭐️⭐️
High 3
7/10 Top 3 Songs 1. O My God 2. Murder By Numbers 3. Every Breath You Take
Synchronicity I & II are both good tracks, as is Every Breath You Take, Murder By Numbers is also a strong finish, but the other tracks didn't live up to my expectations.
It is a good album. The highs are very high. But what can I say, something isn't really working for me as a whole. Would listen again though
I’m didn’t love this, but didn’t hate it either. Decent variety of songs which was nice. Songs varied from quintessential 80’s jams to Tim Burton jams (Mother) to intergalactic soundtracks, and ofc Every breath you take, which will never not be a banger. I’m grateful for a non-60’s album but also hungry for a 90’s or later album.
This was a proper curate’s egg of an album. Parts of it were excellent, especially the track Synchronicity II. Sting has mostly stopped singing in a cod Jamaican accent which is a plus point. However, the hits dragged through overfamiliarity (if I never hear I’ll be Watching You again, I won’t complain). There are some real clunking missteps too, such as rhyming Brontosaurus with ‘lesson for us’ and the track Mother is simply awful.

All in all what you’d expect from a Police album, with a few pleasant surprises.
Gefiel mir. So stellt man sich The Police ja vor. Bisl glatt vielleicht.
This was pretty okay. They do have a distinct sound, and I look forward to other Police albums, should they come up. Hearing “Every Breath You Take” as part of its album (vs in the background on tv) made me realize it really is a great song, (vs just being a massively popular song).
Not memorable at all.
U2 if they knew how to play their instruments
2nd half was way more enjoyable than the 1st.
# 178 : Good album, I like it, There were some bangers, and some awful stuff too, I wouldn't buy this but might spin it again if it came up in the list again. Fav Track : Wrapped Around Your Finger
Besides the classics, not my music.
Synchronicity I, King of Pain and Wrapped around your finger still sound good - especially King of Pain. Every Breath is what it is. Then a lot of average/interesting filler. Ms Gradenko and Mother though! Horrific. Take those two tracks of the album and it's a 4.
Easy listening
There's a lot to enjoy here but it's tonally all over the place? Seven songs in I was still thinking about the song about dinosaurs.
Album starts out weak and ends weak with about 4 great songs sandwiched in the middle.
There are lots of great songs on here but the album as a whole always falls off for me during the second half in the three or four times I’ve listened to it.
Pretty solid tunes on here. I wouldn’t be mad if I heard it again but likely the only song I’ll revisit is “Every Breath You Take.”
Saved Songs: -Every Breath You Take -Synchronicity II -Wrapped Around Your Finger Honorable Mentions: -Miss Gradenko -King Of Pain It took until Miss Gradenko for this record to click for me, the first few songs we're pretty jarring and all over the place (and to be fair, I'm not a big The Police guy). Once I started listening to each song on its own, the feeling of each song being its own soundtrack started to come to me. Every Breath You Take is one of the timeless classics and Synchronicity II is an uplifting instrumental paired with a depressive tale that just works really well. Second half of this record carries hard for me. 3/5 *
Bueno, the police tiene mejores albumes
An album of two halves, quite literally. Side One is mostly very bad. Synchronicity I and Walking In Your Footsteps are sub Peter Gabriel attempts at Prog-Pop, and the lyrics are kinda insulting. I know what Synchronicity means Sting, I don’t need a psychological treatise written in rhyming octuplets to explain it. This isn’t the Golden Age Of Islamic Philosophy. And Walking In Your Footsteps is just trite, Hey Mr Dinosaur, my god… Mother is Andy Summer attempt to keep up with Sting’s cultural and psychological references, by reproducing the inner monologues of Norman Bates. And fittingly, just like in Psycho, it sounds like someone murdering a synthesiser. Miss Gradenko is the best song on this first run of songs, because it’s the shortest. But then, we get to Synchronicity II, which much better explains the concept by giving an narrative example, and is also just a much better song. It’s epic in scope and sound, and points the way to the much more coherent second side, where the New Wave sound comes fully to fruition. It sounds much more coherent, and is much more interesting as a result. But as much as I enjoy the last five songs, the dullness of the first five is pretty overwhelming, which leads to a pretty mixed experience overall
Listened to it before. It was decent, few good songs, but not my favourite.
My group's 50th album. I think it's good, but I wish I could've found more things to say about it than "this is the first one to have a song Weird Al parodied," "I think I prefer when The Police have more reggae" and "I get 'Mother', but that doesn't mean I hafta like 'Mother' all too much."
pretty fun and interesting. cool songs, not overly memorable and probably wouldn't listen again
Some good songs
I didn’t really care for the first half on first listen. Will probably go back to it because there were some interesting ideas on this.
Don’t think I’d ever heard the whole album though before. A good album.
At times jazzy and catchy, it gets charmingly demented, then plays it somewhat safe and plain by the end
album was fine, passed quickly with no real standouts to me other than the obvious Every Breath You Take
Good stuff, might click more on a revisit. Also this guy HATES his mom.
What a weird album. Favorite song: Synchronicity II
Loved The Police at the time and have all their albums on vinyl. But the fact that I have none on CD reflects that I quickly fell out of love with them and seem to remember that this album was the last straw. Apart from hearing the hit singles off the album I haven’t listened to it for yonks. Giving it another spin I realise why. The first side is garbage apart from perhaps the Synchronicity 1 and 2 tracks. The second side which contains most of the big hits manages to redeem the whole record although Tea in Sahara does sound like a Sting solo record and he was trying this out before he went his own way after this album. Listening to The Police again reminded me of the CD thing and note to self to buy their second album on CD but not this one. Strong side 2 reflects my rating.
This album has me very torn. A lot of it is fantastic, but also Every Breath You Take is garbage
Mother est vraiment chelou! Bon album!
The second half of this album is great. However the first half is filled with forgettable tunes and what even is “Mother” trying to be? The good is very good but the bad is head scratching. 3.5/5
Wtf was Mother
I remember when this came out. I was really excited. but honestly as an album it doesn't approach there earlier stuff. of course it has the classic songs, every breath, king of pain, wrapped around your finger but just doesn't do it for me.
3.4/5 Best Track: Wrapped Around Your Finger
Some weird ones on this one. Some of them like random noise over a drum beat. Wonder if that was his mother on the phone? Synchronicity II is excellent. So is Every Breath You Take. And King of Pain.
The singles are great, the others are bad. 2.7
Not my favorite Police album, but still a great listen.
Enjoyed the hits... 'Every Breath You Take', 'King of Pain', and 'Wrapped Around Your Finger'. Didn't skip any of the other tracks, but wouldn't listen to them again. 3/5 just for the hits
Good album, some great songs (Every breath you take) and some not great songs (Mother). Loved their sound and vibe.
Pretty good album with some clunker songs, I don't really feel much about it. Obviously "Every Breath You Take" is the highlight here but it just doesn't do much for me.
2.5 eerder maar doe maar 3 want het is een iconic album met 'Every Breath You Take' enzo. Maar idk niet echt onder de indruk.
Very mixed. Some is great, other songs are ok... and Mother I could barely listen to. I would listen again but skip that track.
4/10 Its carried by the back half of the album
I think I would prefer a greatest hits.
Another album I haven't heard in more that 20 years. Still pretty good.
One or two good songs, then the rest just poopy.
I've learned they I really need to be in the rmood
B side of this album is much better than A side. What else to say, it's the Police. I like them OK. It's a decent album but doesn't really get me excited. Mother is objectively terrible.
Expected something different, I think. Knowing the most well known songs by an artist often doesn't paint an accurate picture. It isn't bad per se but for some stretches it's a bit annoying. Favourite songs: Walking in Your Footsteps, Every Breath You Take, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger
Love the hits, didn’t care much for the remainder. That “Mother” song was insufferable.
Sonically interesting. Not my fav
Some good tracks: Wrapped Around Your Finger, King of Pain, Synchronicity II. Not as good as I remember it from years ago. Definitely a distinct signature sound.
Sonically, the album was refreshing at the start with elements of African rhythms and percussion instruments and North African pentatonic melodies, but it became stale rather quickly. It seemed as though there was a solid theme for each song but the lyrics were just thrown together to match for some songs. I think it’s a good album but maybe not my preferred style.
I tried, not my genre
Another average album to me. LOVED the classics but just couldn't get into the weirder stuff ("Mother").
Another classic worthy of being on the list
Bit of a mixed effort but still has some high points. 3 stars but could be convinced it’s a 4 star album.
Classic songs of my childhood!
Every Breath You Take is great of course, but I really didn’t care for Mother and the rest were just ok
Rollo. Le doy 3 porque tiene Every Breath You Take.
Knew a few songs already. Never go out of my way to listen to the Police, but saved a few songs. Like that it was dark but still upbeat
Meh.
The Police are an excellent band but not necessarily an album band; there's a few poorer additions on this. However, there are also many bops and it's a good listen.
I liked the Police better when Kevin was singing and playing the drums. Favorite track: Synchronicity
I like Sting a lot I have listened to a good amount of his music with Dad who is a fan of some of his solo stuff :) Mother is so weird :/ lol Every Breath you take! Great song Reading through the reviews it seems like a LOT of people really hate Sting
A few really good songs and that's about it
It’s good but the song about dinosaurs is an abomination, I’m not 7 years old
Sat down on the plane and started listening this album. The first half was not a good soundtrack to a turbulent take off, with Mother really exacerbating the anxiety. Then all of a sudden I was soaring through the clouds to Every Breath You Take. I hadn't read the tracklist, so this was a lovely surprise. Enjoyed King of Pain just as much, and the rest of the album was lovely.
Least favourite album of the Police: one absolute classic, a semi-classic, one clear 1-star song and the other tracks 2 or 3 stars.
Musically pretty decent, definitely enjoyed the guitar work on it, but something has always just been missing for me from The Police's work - I'm not sure exactly what it is but I just can't find the kind of deep enjoyment that I do from other bands - maybe it's just lacking a bit on that spontaneous, creative spirit that I find in other bands of the era - like XTC. I just don't really find them that enjoyable overall. And the lyrics are. not good. Idk. It's not for me!
Ruined by Mother (unlike The Wall)
Yeah. Definitely their most sophisticated and polished. Synchronocoty 2 and Wrapped Around Your Finger have stood up very well.
Good album, probably Police best, and one you should take your time to listen too, but it’s not great, and I feel Police are one of those groups who have a number of great singles spread over a few of their albums. But if you need to listen to one police album it should be this one. But won’t be making my frequent rotation list anytime soon.
good album. mother gives pink floyd vibes which makes sense. every breath you take is always a vibe and is already in multiple of my playlists. fav song is synchronicity. basic- i know.
Je n'ai pas trop accroché :/
Very well-produced. Each instrument is crisp and clear and fills its sonic space fully while not overlapping with the other instruments. Beyond the production though, the songs are a bit boring. They just sorta came up with one riff and repeated it for most of the song, while singing lyrics that lyrics that sound like 8th grade poetry.
Between this and Zenyatta Monetary for the worst Police album, but only because the other three are so bloody good. Some stellar tracks on this but some very skippable ones. 3.5*
Very mixed, can see why the ones that aren’t well known never took off
Fine but I found a little dull personally
Lots of different sounds which was a bit of a surprise, but sometimes they went too weird - Mother. Enjoyed wrapped around your finger. Has a bit of a 60s sound that Animal Collective want to imitate
Ñeeee
Some enjoyable songs but didn’t really love the whole album.
In the film Quadrophenia, Sting played 'Ace Face' who was the epitome of cool in the mod scene, however as Phil Daniels continues his downward spiral addicted to blueys he eventually comes crashing down finding out Ace Face is merely a bus boy at a hotel and is in fact a slave to the modern world earning pittance being bossed around. In a way, this is relative to Stings music as the more you listen to the Police, despite the appearance of the big hitters that he is in fact a genius, scratch beneath the surface and there is a lot of crap. still, 3/5 as i need to save face a bit having paid £75 to go watch them at twickenham 15 years ago
a load of weird crap, then two absolute bangers, then a load more weird crap
A good album, but carried a bit by every breath you take
walking in your footsteps, king of pain, wrapped around your finger
Enjoyable album. Not really my favorite but enjoyable.
Wrapped around your finger was decent
is ok
Spun the vinyl. Side 1 is decent but not great. Side 2 is mostly magical. It’s not my favorite Police album but does contain my favorite Police song, “King of Pain.” Overall - mixed review, so “3”.
A few great singles on here. Mother is awful and an easy skip on an otherwise pleasant listen
I was gonna hate on the album at first, the first half of the songs were mid tbh but that back half of the album was full of bangers. Wrapped Around your finger a Goated song. The Police do have better songs though I feel like so I cant rate too high. Not an all time album in my opinion but still a good listen. 3
C+ Synchronicity I 3 Walking in Your Footsteps 3 O My God 3 Mother 1 Miss Gradenko 3 Synchronicity II 3 Every Breath You Take 3 King of Pain 3 Wrapped Around Your Finger 3 Tea in the Sahara 3 Kevin Malone in a fedora holding drumsticks.
The Police is my go-to example of a greatest hits band, and Synchronicity does nothing to change my opinion. It's unfocused and at times boring. And then you have killer tracks like 'Every Breath You Take', 'King of Pain', and 'Wrapped Around Your Finger'. Highlight: the drumming of Stewart Copeland. Lowlight: Andy Summers' aneurysm on 'Mother'.
When The Police are good, few trios are better. Stewart Copeland is to no surprise as good as ever on this. It starts out excellent. The title track is simply pure brilliance. Then everything takes a nosedive before completely going of the rails on the train wreck that is “Mother”. The from title track 2.0 and for the remaining album everything is back on track and The Police deliver a few of their greatest songs. I just can’t get over the fact that most of Side A is that boring and/or bad.
#41. Classic album for my college days. Still good. miss The Police...
2.75
I always want to like the Police, objectively it's good music but hard for me to get into. This album didn't appeal to me as much as some of their others.
listened while half asleep on a plane but from what i remember i liked it!
Bit surprised the Geordies aren't more positive about Newcastle's famous son. Not a bad album overall - starts weak (I didn't enjoy Synchronicity I or Walking in your Footsteps). Mother is bizarre but alright, Every Breath You Take is an over-played classic, and Murder By Numbers was most enjoyable. Sting and the Police are incredibly prolific, and am generally a fan of numerous songs (the more miserable ones) so am looking forward to more.
I don't like The Police. I respect their place in music history and respect their song writing, but I've never actually enjoyed their music. This album didn't change that, but the track "Synchronicity II" was bloody good.
I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, but it was okay to listen to.
Don't need to listen. I probably own this. OK but not something I'd seek out. Tiresome
Every breath you take is a classic but I really don't care for the rest of the album. Expiremental for its time and really popularized worldbeat in the 80s but I don't think many of the sounds stuck. Good album, not great. One of the best singles of all time. 7.5/10
La primera parte no me gustó nada.
The bar uses an applause meter. That is why it is so important for you all to come and applaud only for my band, Scrantonicity II. NOT Scrantonicity, which I am NO LONGER a part of.
Decent but some of the songs were hard skips
- Mother may be one of the worst songs I have ever listened to - The rest of the album was fun, enjoyable listen - Every Breath You Take is an 80s classic
- very strong groove between drummer and bassist - I wanted to like it more than I did unfortunately - Every Breath You Take is a certified classic
The highs of this album are high, but those are songs we all still hear on a regular basis. Tbe lows are kinda rough and I didnt find any hidden gems, which is what I am hoping for with this project.
ok
3.5
I was pumped to listen to a Police album today. It was pretty good. I would have given it a 4 but the song Mother gave me the heebie jeebies I hated it. But other than that I enjoyed listening to every song. 3/4
"Well every girl I go out with becomes my mother in the end" The Police! The Fuzz, Popo, 12, the red and blue, it's not your dad's favorite band, but he'll play the hits. I was excited for my first police album, and T1 - "Synchronicity I" started the album out with a good start. T2 - "Walking in your footsteps" annoyed me, and I hated that song, but if I hated that song, then I despised T4 - "Mother" which was probably one of the most unlistenable songs of this entire project, as of yet. T7 - "Every breath you take" is a classic, and T9 - "Wrapped around your finger" was a really nice hidden gem off of this album (playlist track). Much like a clingy ex-girlfriend, this track was hot and cold, unbearably annoying at times, but the good parts almost make you want to forget about everything else and redeem it. but you can't, because jessica took your dog to the pound when she left. 3/5
it's alright, i liked synchronicity and every breath you take
is okay :)
Miss Gradenko Every breath you take King of pain
This album is a mixed bag. Odd inclusions like Mother and Walking in Your Footsteps lean away from the sound the rest of the tracks are going for. It's less cohesive than other albums, but it's fine overall. This album is at it's best when it's leaning into themes of possession and power dynamics. Favorite tracks: O My God, Wrapped Around Your Finger
Very synth-y at first... came together at the end. I liked the last song:)
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Synchronicity II (6) 2 - Synchronicity I (1) 3 - Every Breath You Take (7)
I have never liked the police.... Let's see how this goes. It's ok. Some good stuff but it just doesn' move me at all
Some odd choices on here overall solid otherwise
Feels like a quintessential Police record: one great song, some notable runner-ups, some filler masked as art-pop. In short, it only solidifies their status as a singles band -- which I don't mean as a pejorative. Stewart Copeland is a terrific drummer. I wish he had more to work with than Sting's pretentions.
The first six tracks are not just disliked but painful to listen to. The mix (even on the 2003 remaster) is almost unintelligible. The back half of the album is better, but still not great.
interesting but also not. it was ok
Okay, I'm not a fan of Sting's vocals (for the most part), to me, it feels too high pitched and my ears really don't enjoy that experience. There is some really good music here, but the vocals ruined it for me. But like I said on Paul Simon's Graceland, I really don't appreciate what feels like cultural appropriations. The reggae influences were very over done in Walking In Your Footsteps and I get why bands want to use sounds they like from all around the world but there is a fine line between appropriation and appreciation. I'm not sure what the hell was going on with Mother, but I'd be glad to never have to hear it again. Every Breath You Take is an obviously classic, and I can't say anything bad about it. Standouts: Every Breath You Take, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger
3.5/5. I'm into this. I know it's not the most amazing music ever made, but I enjoyed listening to this album.
A-pretty cool but don't really care about the police D- alright. Liked the mix of different instruments. Not as bad as I thought it would be.
I can take or leave The Police as a group, never really made much of an impact on me. I remember my schoolmate buying this album on original release, and how he described it as a Jeckyll and Hyde album of tracks. Tracks 1 to 5 and 10 are just really crappy album filler tracks that will never be played again, but they're there to throw in with tracks 6 to 9 that were the comercially released as singles. Should make a special mention for the track "Mother" ... simply to say it was bloody awful, soooo bad.
How is Mother and Every Breath You Take on the same album???
It’s okay. Very solid, but not particularly memorable. C-.
Every breath you take was one of my favorite songs in the 2000s when I used to listen to the only English radio station in my city. Except that weird one in the middle, the other songs were decent. Not as good as every breath you take, which in retrospect, sounds very stalker-y.
Little Thing She Does is Magic. Every Breath You Take is een classic.
1 2 4 3 5 6 8 9 10 7 3.2
Weird iconic sound, Sting is king.
I'm used to songs like "Every breath you take" and "Message in a bottle" from The Police and assumed the rest of their songs to sound similarly. This was different, except for every breath you take, and totally unexpected. Not my cup of tea but an overall enjoyable listening experience except the song Mother. It doesn't fit the rest of the album.
I’ve always been fairly ambivalent about The Police . They have a few cracking songs but the rest I can take or leave. Today it’s felt like a bit of a chore. And “Every breath you take” is still up there as one of the creepiest songs ever written, along with Elvis Costello’s. “ I want you”.
This album is a strange one for me — I'm familiar with it, I saw The Police on this tour (the not-quite-ready-for-prime-time REM was the unlikely stadium opener) and they were fantastic live. The issue with this album, for me, is it morphs into a Sting album I didn't want at the midpoint. I need Stewart Copeland doing the amazing stuff he does on drums to be turned on by Sting — Andy Summer too, but Copeland's drumming is the catalyst for this band. And when that gets stripped out, as it is on "Every Breath," King Of Pain," "Tea In The Sahara" all of side two ... look, Sting is an above-average singer, songwriter, bassist. But, on his own, I don't love his music. It's fine, just not my soundtrack. It was this trio combo that made him palatable, and side two of this album might as well be the first solo Sting record, and while that played well on the charts for this band, I'm on board with the first half, the two Syncronicities, the bizarre tracks by Copeland and Summer. If side two were filled with more of that, this could be a five. But to dive into the slow burn of solo Sting's soft-jazz-rock jazz, hard to call it The Police. I guess that's why they broke up after this album.
I was surprised at how much I liked this, given that I've never been a Police fan. Side one is pretty meh. The songs were stranger than I expected them to be, especially given what a smash hit this album was. I don't know that I loved those songs, but I give them an A for effort. (Except for Mother, which is just terrible.) And maybe it's just because of context, but the hits were so much weirder than I remembered. Their arrangements are so counterintuitive, it's a wonder that they work so well as fantastic pop songs. The musicianship is top-notch, of course. Stewart Copeland is a wonder. And the production sounded amazing on headphones. So overall, an uneven album with hits that impressed me way more than I was expecting. I'm still not a Police fan, exactly. Not sure why. But that's on me, not them.
A bit of a weird listen, with a number of the opening tracks missing the mark. However, I felt the album came together towards the end, I particularly enjoyed King of Pain.
Wish this album was a little weirder. Liked the song 'Mother' the most. Either it's not Sting, or, Sting really pushes his vocals in a different direction. Has a very cool desert psychedelic vibe.
Favorite song: Wrapped Around Your Finger Least favorite: Mother One word: backloaded
Great because it has Every breath you take
More of a mix of styles than I was expecting, only knowing the hits from The Police this was more experimental than I anticipated.
3.5/5
Pretty good, would give it a 3.5 if I could
A fun listen, not quite my style, but I get why people like The Police. Very creative.
I liked parts of this a lot. I think this band will suffer from the Coldplay effect, where it is hard to overlook the general ‘wankyness’ of the band and the lead singer. I feel like mother was an attempt to be edgy and different like XTC or something, but it was a failure. Every breath is probably the reason this album is on the list but it stands out as quite different to the rest of the album.
Meh
Never been a band I liked - Sting's straining voice doesn't do it for me. However, there are some very strong and catchy tracks on here. Some overly synthy 80s stuff and self indulgent drivel like 'Mother' drag it down though. Still, better than expected.
Our Father, who art in heaven, please save me from this But also I'LL BE WATCHING YOU ofc
A bit cheeky, a bit funky, a bit good
Not my fave, remembered the police though
Mostly chaos. Couple of huge hits in the middle. Synchronicity II Every Breath You Take King of Pain Not and end to end classic album, but some good listening in there.
Every Breath you take
If this was a greatest hits album I might have been more inclined to give this a 4 star rating. The Police have a handful of songs I enjoy and their fusion of reggae and classic rock creates a unique sound you can only find on a Police album. As it stands though this album doesn't do a whole lot for me. The run of songs between Synchronicity II and King of pain isn't bad and would lift the album up as a whole if the song Mother wasn't so terrible it immediately knocks it back down. I kind of started getting bored towards the end for no particular reason other than I guess the music is just kinda meh for me. I feel comfortable giving this 3 stars.
3/5. A much different album than I was expecting, pretty nerdy and progressive for what I thought the Police were. However, the first half of the album does not grab your attention. Once the second half starts, you realize why this album got the attention it did. But it falls too quickly. Definitely banger after banger later on but overall, too experimental and not in a good way.
I think I liked it but it's not stuck with me
WTF is Mother all about? Some good tunes, but nothing amazing.
Nice to come back to this one. Both synchronicity’s and king of pain are great, the rest is good to ok. Synchronicity II definitely my favorite, sounds like a cut from Signals by Rush. S/o Stewie Copeland. More miffed at the fact they can’t put aside grievances and make more music together (3.5/5)
It’s ok
Second half of album is pretty bland. Very strong first half flubbed.
Very synchronised
All over the place sonically, get some cohesion you tantric weirdo
When it's good it's good, when it's bad it's fucking awful.
Second half is better, but a lot of crap on here.
The Police are always a classic. I'm not sure everything on this album resonated with me, but it's an album I want to revisit.
feels like they discovered bongos and it exploded their brains. kind of wild how they chucked Mother in the middle, it's so wildly different from the rest of the album
Good, but not the best Police album
Sting and the rest of the band come through with some well written cuts (some of which being better than others) that revel in the album’s core ‘80s sound. While Sting furthers himself as a great singer, there are too many moments on this album that feel like they didn’t amount to as much as they could have.
ma ma
Not quite as good as I remembered.
Started with a bang and then fizzed. I appreciate the weirdness and grit that filters throughout, but this was too hit and miss to make any lasting impression. Fav track: Synchronicity 2.5/5
Once again, Sting’s vocals don’t really click with me, as with most of the Police’s style overall. There were a couple standout tracks that felt grittier and gave some edge to the record, and in the context of the album Every Breath You Take works and flows really well. Great instrumentation and production too, which was expected. Probably not a band I’m going to have on out of my own choice, but didn’t hate this one by any means. Three stars. Fave track: Mother
The Police - I never could really get into their music, but I know the obvious hits and I respect each member's musicianship. But on this album, Sting is a little too full of himself songwrighting-wise. I can't bear to listen to most of this. Only everybody's favourite stalker song - Every Breath You Take -, King of Pain and Wrapped Around Your Finger betray the greatness this band was capable of. The rest is just noodling and experimentation. 2.5/5
Hmm, I thought this was good, but maybe not so much my thing? Nothing here really grabbed me, even if the lyricism and instrumentation was great. I just found myself not caring too much for this one. Favourite: Synchronicity I
As an album, I'm giving this 3 stars. I like the songs better individually than as an album. Listening to it all the way through, it doesn't flow as well as I remember. A lot of the individual songs are worth 4 or 5 stars, but overall as a cohesive album, it's just okay.
A few spectacular songs, a few decent songs, a few terrible songs. Perfectly in the middle albumwise.
I was hyped upon listening to this album as it is very reputable and has a classic. The first four tracks are mildly mediocre and disappointing, but by track 4, every song onwards was great. It is a good album, with some lows… Vocals are generally okay on most tracks. A couple of songs stand out, the rest are just plainly simple. I enjoyed this album a lot (if we pretend tracks 1-4 do not exist). Favourites: Miss Gradenko / Every Breath You Take / King Of Pain / Wrapped Around Your Finger / Murder By Numbers I will revisit this, not bad.
the singles are pretty great but at least half the album sucks
Few bangers, bit weird
Synchronicity- Opening Track, Catchy- (8) Walking In Your Footsteps- Good (7) O My God- Mid (5.5) Mother- Horrible (3) Miss Gradenko- Another Vibey Song(7.5) Synchronicity II -Not bad, but not good either (6.5) Every Breath You Take- Perfect(10) King of Pain- Vibey Song (8.5) Wrapped Around Your Finger- Groovy, Goodn(7) Tea by the Sahara- Mid (6) Murder By Numbers- Fire Ass Song (10) Murder By Numbers- Fire Ass Song(10)
A record that benefited from the massive singles, especially Every Breath which was a phenomenon. The other tracks that make up the rest of the album aren’t of the same quality. On the whole it’s a good rock record but not a great one.
I had this album on cassette tape. And a poster of The Police in my bedroom. Entirety of Side 1 held no memories and all the songs felt sped up & unmelodic. I think I probably didn’t play this side too much. Side 2 - Synchronicity II remember liking the Loch Ness Monster metaphor. Also “packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes” & “the pain upstairs that makes his eyeballs ache.” Every Breath You Take reminds me of summer science camp at WWU and my friend Karl. This song played in the dining hall one day. Pleasantly surprised to remember I liked singing along to King of Pain & still know the lyrics. Melody is repetitive but the lyrics were like a good poem with lots of imagery. “There’s a blue whale beached by the spring tide’s ebb/There’s a butterfly trapped in a spider’s web” Wrapped Around Your Finger - fave lyric is “I will turn your face to alabaster/when you find your servant is your master.”
I always found these guys kind of lightweight new wave. Didn't really appeal to me.
didn’t like the fourth track but overall chill and good though not something i could see myself listening to for enjoyment or casually
Singles
Good, but carried by a stronger back half. 3
Ain’t no Scrantonicity.
7/10 style musique variée, plus new wave-post punk. every breath you take synchronicity ii king of rain
There is a distinctly different set of influences on this album from world music compared to the rest of the Police's catalogue. Everyone knows Every Breath You Take. A classic album that provided a fitting end for the band. It was really cool to see their reunion tour as a kid.
Mother is such a fucking weird track. Miss Gradenko is cool and refreshing pallet cleanser. Every Breath you Take is a classic. The entire back half of this album is indulgent, and only EByT really earns the the right to be longer than 4 min. I'm feeling a solid three to a light 4.
3.4 - Some big hits on here, including “Every Breath…”, but overall this record makes me feel like I’m waiting to see the dentist.
Very interesting album. Loved the lyrics and writing style and about 75% of the songs. The 2 title tracks and every breath are really far and above the best songs. Some of the others aren't as engaging and I know people dislike Mother but I really like it. Production is good and it definitely sounds like an 80's album. Very close to a 4 Score: 70 Art: 50
AJ: Synch 2 🚀 Never given them a real shake. I like what I know. Sting vox, man. Wow. Great great rhythm section. They’re cool.
The core of this album is amazing, all the other songs are not very good
Quite inconsistent, just about nicks a 3
The big hits everybody knows are great and some of the best early 80s pop-rock there is. The other songs, there's a reason they never hit the charts.
Fun and interesting
Wasn’t too bad. Got some nice early punk vibes in some of the songs. A little bit too “jazzy” for me in some parts, but I liked it. Except that one song where he was yelling about his mom calling.
This is the first time I've listened to The Police beyond hearing a song of theirs from time to time. I was familiar with the album but only really recognised the hits. This was rough. The hits were good, but I wouldn't seek them out. It's very radio friendly music and just lacks soul for me.
Was also jarred by Mother.
First time listening heard every breath you take Favorites o my god miss grandenko synchronicity II every breath you take king of pain wrapped around your finger murder by numbers Least Favorites walking in your footsteps mother
Some songs I really dig on here. Some I didn't like at all. Worth the listen for sure.
Police have always been kind of a meh band for me and this is their most meh album.
Not a great album. Just fine. "Mother" was unpleasant. Not a Police fan really, but still fell short of expectations.
a couple of okay songs with the one obvious banger. A bit strange in spots.
It's fine, I guess the Police just don't really do it for me. Obviously an important cultural album, but I won't be revisiting anytime soon.
I think this might be our first Police album? Regardless, this was an interesting one. Every Breath You Take is a classic, but there were a few other ones on here like King of Pain that I couldn't get out of my head. Some songs I also skipped so I think I can only give this puppy a 3 star.
I’ve never liked The Police. I don’t hate them and I like a few songs but there’s just something about them that I’ve always put them on meh side. Assumed I wouldn’t like this album but it was better than I thought it would be. The few songs I wasn’t familiar with were ok but nothing special. Synchronicity II (no idea that song was named that) and Wrapped Around Your Finger are solid songs, I guess. Every Breath You Take is a beating but probably because I’ve heard it so many damn times. Creepy lyrics aside, it’s kind of weird hearing a song that’s been all over life since before I can remember just starting up after mostly unheard songs. Can’t say this album made me a fan of The Police, but they didn’t lose any ground with me, either.
3 stars
fav tracks - Synchronicity I - Every breath you take - Murder by numbers
3.5
yeahhhhh i feel like i should have liked it more but like idk man it wasn’t that good
I didn't take much from Synchronicity, The Police have never interested me much and as good as Every Breath You Take is, it stands out so much from everything else on here both in quality but also in style and it feels weird. That track alone earns a 3 though.
A mixed bag. The first couple of tracks are okay, then takes a real downward turn with Oh My God and especially Mother and Miss Gradenko. After that, though, it gets really good - Synchronicity II and Every Breath You Take are superb, King Of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, and Tea In The Sahara are good, then should have ended the album there. Murder By Numbers (the last track) is a bit too janky for me. 3/5.
I haven't listened to this or to The Police in general with real earnest for a really long time. I know that this is their best and biggest album, and I get why, but it's certainly not my favorite. Excellent musicianship throughout and really enjoyable to listen to and revisit.
Adoro the police!
I grew up with a good grip of these songs by way of the greatest hits CD being played during my childhood. I'll happily take any excuse to hear Stewart Copeland play the drums!
Not one of their best effort regardless of the fact that it contained "Breath" and "Wrapped". Zenyatta Mondatta from 5 years earlier is a better effort by the group.
It’s not a bad record, but it is a bad Police record. I’m a huge fan of their first 3 records, and even like most of Ghost, but this album goes in a direction that ends up being a Sting sound, not the Police. That’s said, there are a couple of good songs.
There are some songs i really like on this but it doesn't hold together well as an album. Not sure who thought putting Mother and Every Breath on the same album was a good idea.
I like some of the songs a lot. But I don't love the album as a whole. It's fine, some of the songs I'll add to a playlist but I don't see listening to the whole thing again anytime soon.
Some truly great 80s pop here. The album doesn’t hold all the way through, and it’s interesting that the hits are later in the album and most on side two of the vinyl. The hits are songs I could listen to anytime, any day. The rest, I’m completely indifferent. Hard not to give this at least a 4, but I’m rating the album as a whole. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Enjoyable for now, but probably won't return
This is a curious album, in that the first half is slick but also formulaic and dull. and then it takes off with Synchronicity II, Every breath you take, Wrapped around my finger, before falling away again. The album certainly highlights what good musicians the Police were, but it also feels at times like they were going through the motions and it generally lacks the dynamism of their early LPs.
Another classic that I had never listened to in it's entirety. Add to the list of albums that are great from start to finish.
Really well made album. Every breath you take is honestly such a good song. Mother is one of the most unhinged songs I’ve ever heard. So weird
It was an overall quite good listen, this album has some nice and interesting songs, but some others aren't that good in songwriting. Overall enjoyable.
I think I need to listen to this again, but I also think it’s pretty overrated and underwhelming. Didn’t hate it, but also didn’t love anything on it.
3/3- Driving to school
That mom song is psycho, the rest of the album is so-so
The extreme awfulness of Mother is so atrocious that even the 7 good songs pale under the putrid weight of its detritus. Even the song about the blow up doll in an earlier Police LP seems good in comparison. Only a few old style Police. The ballads and jazzy songs are brilliant, but it's hardly the fun and spikiness of Regatta or Zenyana. A good send off, but surely album filler like Mother is unnecessary? A mostly excellent lp, but the new wave spike is replaced with slick Sting craft including that song about a creepy stalker, you know the one! 3 stats because I can't get over Mother.
So 80s! Love the up-tempo and the great mix of music to lyrics. A few cuts that are well known die to continually being played...
I like the Caribbean twist to the otherwise New Wave sound. But wtf was "Mother"??
I’d say it’s a decent record. Only a few songs that really didn’t do anything for me at all dragging it down. Some creative ideas on the songs that do hit though. 6/10
There is a reason why you only know one song from this album...
It’s fine. Tantric
Fine. Didn't massively grab me, but nor did it enrage me, even if "Every Breath You Take" has been played the frick out. Fave track - "Mother" for entertaining weirdness. "Murder By Numbers" I quite liked, too...
Nice.
Very interesting blend of influences on this album. Post punk, new wave, punk, reggae, world music. Worthwhile listen
Three or four. Dinosaur song made me laugh out loud. Not sure if that was serious.
Very 80's sounding, average, not bad, not good. While often misunderstood, "Every Breath You Take" is the best song on this album. The Police are a band I have heard of but am largely unfamiliar with their discography. I'm interested in checking them out more.
Instantly recognizable as the police with their iconic sound. Some hits, some misses.
Decent
favorite tracks - synchronicity I, miss gradenko, synchronicity II, king of pain, wrapped around your finger least favorite tracks - mother, tea in the sahara
It was alright. "Mother" was definitely a moment. Excepted a bit more from the Police to be honest
Not as good as their first two albums
Mostly too raucous for me.
Almost horrifically boring but not quite. Great background music so I'll give it three. I also quite enjoyed Tea in the Sahara and Murder by Numbers, in addition to the classic Every Breath You Take.
A clusterfuck of some true bangers and the worst songs you've ever heard in your life. Synchronicity I & II are great fun, probably the best two songs on the album. There's also "Every Breath You Take", which is also fantastic but I can't take it seriously anymore. "Mother" definitely exists. It somehow manages to be the stupidest song on an album with a song dedicated to dinosaurs. "Hey, mighty brontosaurus, don't you have a lesson for us?" is an actual lyric on this album that they wanted you to take seriously. Sounds like some Blue's Clues shit. Sting was 32 years old when he wrote that.
I enjoy The Police every now and then. By then end of the album, I was a bit sick of the vocals though. Not enough to hate it but I can only handle so much Sting. Still a good listen though.
Very average first half but killer second.
Yeah this sounds like The Police
I have few thoughts about this album. First of all, how out of place "Every Breath You Take" sounds on this album. The whole record is so lively and upbeat, with characteristic Sting's vocal and funky/rock guitars, and bringing fresh approach to popular music. And then we have their most popular (also terribly overplayed in the radio) song, which sounds like it was on this album by an accident. Second of all, is Sting a great singer? Of course! But, like it's a case for few more singers, listening to a whole album with his voice in a row is a certain type of torture. He changes the way he sings for "Every breath you Take", but all the rest is exactly the same, doesn't matter how much the melody changes. Pretty hard stuff. Overall, it's a nice album, I like both parts of synchronicity, but I won't be going back to this record often.
Hitazos y rollazos
This album is a mix of really good songs and utterly mediocre ones. Thus, it will balance out to a 3.
Having heard Every Breath You Take, probably a million times (don't know why people love it tbh) I expected the rest of the album to sound very similar. I was pleasantly surprised, but also mildly confused that this wasn't the case. In spite of all this, The Police did a decent job of melding a number of different styles, tempos and genres throughout. Best: Synchronicity II Worst: Every Breath You Take
I want to like this more, but I've heard the songs so many times they've become background noise.
Not bad, but definitely could have gone without that mother track
A few good songs
Solid and entertaining album
For me, these guys have a double album’s worth of incredible music if you put it all together. I’m not sure any of their original records is an all time great, but even if so, this is not it. One 5* song here, two 4*, one 3*, and some self-indulgent duds.
Super shiny deluxe pop. Take away the four monstrous singles (conveniently all back to back at the start of side 2) and we have a slight affair with in-jokes (Mother, Miss Gradenko), vocals by the drummer etc. etc. But those singles eh? BIG.
The Police was a great band for singles, but as far as LPs went, all of their albums were quite uneven, with filler that didn't age well at all. This one here is no exception, even though it has a few iconic tracks. Now the question is, if because of those singles you had to save *one* album by The Police, which one would you save? Not an easy one to crack out, believe me. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 780, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter (including this one, *maybe*) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter (including this one)
A very interesting album by The Police that's incredibly hit or miss. Both Synchronicity tracks are fantastic, as is King of Pain and of course Every Breath You Take. There's a lot of pretty naff stuff here as well though, from the disturbing Mother to the cringey lounge jazz of Murder by Numbers
Mother killed this album
Bra til plankevors
Monday was a nothing day, kinda just rolled around, slept in nice, but much to do.
The first couple of songs were so bad I almost didn’t finish the album. I’m glad I did, lots of songs that I’m familiar with and enjoy.
I feel like a lot of it sounded samey but it had some standout tracks. Favorite: Synchronicity II
