Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Hm I didn’t dislike it. I felt like it started off stronger and then just sort of went on for a little too long with the latter half being a lil too similar. But I liked it! I’d listen to it in the background happily. But I’m not like ITCHING to re-listen to it as much.

good i guess, but didn’t hit me too hard. don’t hate it! couple great songs in there.

so generically 80s

I loved The Triffids earlier Born Sandy Devotional, and Calenture definitely keeps up a similar folk rock sound just without managing to ever hit the highs of the former album.

Favourite song - Unmade love

Much better than expected. Sleeper hit

Pretty good. Some great.

A nice surprise that doesn't quite hit a 4

Some standotus, but a long album with a lot of songs that sound the exact same. 3/5.

Straightforward 80's folk-ish pop, big hair and synths. Went on a bit.

Every individual song I thought was pretty decent but as I was nearing the end of the album I looked back and could only remember a nebulous blob of 80s generic music

Never heard of this group before but I liked this album ok. I’d give it another listen. Liked “Save What You Can”.

This was nice but didn't grab me today. Very emotional '80s piano pop rock

I mean this was fine. It sounded like a lot of other things from this era. Or perhaps a lot of other things from this era sound like this. It reminded me of other stuff through and through. It was what it was.

Listened all day. Had a nice day. Bury me deep in love.

Feels a little like echo and the bunnymen meets INXS

unbearably dull. even the good songs were boring and the tracklist was soooo long. 17 songs and most of them have the audacity to be over 4 minutes? but not bad.

Actually not bad, lost a bit of energy but enjoyed the first half of the album. Very polished and radio friendly

This was a band/record I had never heard of, and it was perfectly fine. Catchy and safe alternative music from the 80s. Solid but probably would never listen to again.

It's just kind of your standard 80's rock album. Nothing too special.

Solid 80s90s alternative. Open For You reminded me of the Church.

pretty middle of the road pop rock, nothing here is bad but my enjoyment isnt very high either. 6/10

I remember the Triffids back in the day and though the music is okay, I am underwhelmed and surprised this band and this album is deemed essential on the list. There are so many more bands from the 80's that played a similar style of music that did it much better. Fellow Australians, Hoodoo Gurus come to mind, whose music is much more appealing and interesting than the Triffids. This isn't a bad album by any stretch, I like some of it, but I didn't realize before just how Christian-rock-like they sound, which loses points with me and some songs are just plain boring and MOR.

Australians. This is a pretty soft album for the descendants of hardened criminals. Just kidding. It's fine. Some folky-new wave goodness.

Not the biggest fan

It’s ok

I don’t hate this album like a lot of the reviewers do, but man is it a wildly uneven album. Some of these songs are fantastic, notably Kelly’s Blues, Hometown Farewell Kiss, and Bad News Always Reminds Me of You. But around those you have mediocre to weak tracks. It’s a rough listen as a whole

Nothing special here.

I had never h was rid of them before. Enjoyable listen.

Definitely a 80's album, not bad and would listen again. I have never heard of this band.

Not bad

I liked this album the vocals are poweful, the arrangements simple straight forward melodious, which helped draw me into the music and the lyric. Unforutunately my music service does not provide lyrics on this album but they seem very romantic and at times tragicly so. They remind me of another "down under" band; The Go-Betweens. A nice discovery 3.5 stars

The opening track is objectively awful. It's up and down after that. A little all over the place to be suitable for background listening, far too irritating to be suitable for foreground listening. It's not a good sign when the reviews of an album are more entertaining than the album itself. I am often partial to Australian pop, but not this time. Well, a second time through it grew on me a little. But I still don't think this album belongs on this list.

I thought it wasn't bad, sounds a bit like echo and the bunnymen at times, which as it had the same producer makes sense.

Couple of gems on here, will definitely re-listen

Nothing special, but I don't dislike it.

3.4/5 Best Track: Vagabond Holes

Hmm, sounds a bit like Tesco Value U2 to my ears. And I don't like them much either. However, this did get better as the record went on. Very cheesy vocally. Can also imagine David Brent knocking out a rendition of these. Favourite tracks: Kelly's Blues, Unmade Love, Blinder By The House, Vagabond Holes, Jerdacuttup Man.

definition of a mid album. nothing great nothing really that bad. just meh 5/10

It aight didn't pay too much attention tbh - 6/10

5/10 - It was alright. No songs really stood out. Nothing was bad it was just fine.

Folk rock. Ni fu ni fa.

1987, Australian 5/5: Holy Water, Bury Me Deep in Love, 4/5: Kelly's Blues, A Trick of the Light, Open For You, Vagabond Holes, Save What You Can 3.5

The lyrics were ok, the music was ok. Just wasn't interested in this one. 3/5.

I was surprised that I enjoyed a couple of these songs after seeing the reviews. Safe album, but I still kinda liked it. Vagabond Holes was probably my favorite here.

Album #10? I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Reminded me of Prefab Sprout with a little less edge. Not sure if it will go in my regular rotation, but this album scratches a particular itch and does its genre well.

Never heard of this band. I liked it. The 80s new wave vibe without synths or melodrama.

Mehhh. Bien, pero tampoco nada del otro mundo. Me gustó.

Solid listening. Reminiscent of Go-Betweens, but not to that level.

a couple gems on here

A few decent tunes – "A Trick of the Light" being the best, with "Bury Me Deep" and "Bad News" are also solid – and above average overall, but not by a mile. "Love the Fever," with its egregious drum machine don't, reminds us why we should be grateful the '80s are over.

Fun 80s Australian band I had never heard of. Kinda U2 plus Talking Heads plus Plimsouls?

Sympathique mais pas renversant, rock classique

It's good but not great. The album definitely grew on me as I listened through it and I think there a few tracks that I will go back and listen to again. However the album lacks that definitive edge that woukd make it a great album.

Not heard before. First impression is favourable.

perfectly pleasant, decent yacht rock

Good potential

Easy listening rock album. Well-produced. 3 stars means it is about average. Good voice. If you like gentle rock, it is fine. Not my kind of music, but that does not mean it is bad. Many might like it.

Some nice songs, a lot of mediocre filler imo. Would not turn off if played on radio, but neither would I play this myself again.

Nice little post punk/pop album. Good for a one time listen if you’re unfamiliar with the group.

One likes quite a bit of this, though it never quite achieves full flight. Slightly overdone, slightly too dramatic. "Bury Me Deep" and "Bad News" are top cuts over a uniformly above average lot. Maybe not quite as good as Go-Betweens, to cite the most obvious comp.

didn't really listen to it since my mood didn't match

Very jangle-pop uk 80s, some of the songs sound like Echo & the Bunnymen, or The Smiths, or Deaon Blue, or The Associates, or even Inxs. Wasn't expecting much, but really enjoyed it, and will listen to it again. One thing though - Spotify has the (very) extended version, with more than twice as many songs, some of them demos/outtakes Just short of 4 🌟 in my view

Eh, Not much to say. Bland 80a stuff. It’s ok, I guess.

I could see this being an album that teenage me could get really into. This is basic 1980s singer/songwriter stuff, with intelligent and emotive lyrics. But in terms of this list, I don't know why it's here - it doesn't seem that it was important or even very popular. And does it stand the test of time? I don't think so. Overall, didn't hate it but didn't feel it needed to be on the list. 3/5

A pleasant listen, which is probably damning it with faint praise. According to Wikipedia, the album explores "themes of insanity, deception and rootlessness—the title refers to a fever suffered by sailors during long hot voyages." If this album explored its small sonic idiosyncracies or the nautical vibe more ala Ween's The Mollusk, I'd probably love it more. Instead it's overbearing production makes it sound more like a lesser U2 or INXS or R.E.M. circa Out of Time. Still, that's not bad company. Strong 3, eeking out to a light 4.

Another victim of the way to fucking long parade

When I first saw the terrible album cover I was a little worried about this one. I actually really enjoyed it and was surprised at the complexity of the lyrics.

You can't have a cool name like The Triffids and produce powder-puff music this boring and get away with it. 'Holy Water' and 'Blinder by the Hour' were pretty nice. I quite like the guy's voice. This scrapes to three stars by its fingernails.

Didn't hear this at the time. Classic 80s sound.

Good album. I enjoyed listening but I probably won't replay it.

The Triffids are an alternative rock band from Australia, similar in sound to bands such as The Smiths. Their sound features heavy use of jangly guitar parts which was so popular in the 80's, as well as lead singer David McComb's low register. His lower voice is by times complimented by female backing vocals, done by Jill Birt. I really enjoyed the Celtic influences heard in the song "Jerdacuttup Man". By times, this music has a tendency to sound like 80's cheesy pop rock (Love the Fever), but it has a unique quality about it that I can't quite put my finger on. Overall, my initial knee jerk reaction was unfavorable, but after listening a second time, I enjoyed it more. I believe with more listens, I would grow to enjoy this record and band. An interesting listen today, as Australia hasn't been featured in this list much for me yet (only other Australian band listened to so far is the Avalanches). Favourite songs: Region Unknown, Holy Water, Kelly's Blues, Bury Me Deep in Love, Jerdacuttup Man, Love the Fever, A Trick of the Light Least favourite songs: Hometown Farewell Kiss, Unmade Love, Open For You, Save What You Can 3/5

I don’t hate this nearly as much as you guys. Just feels like a second rate INXS.

Folk rock. Ni fu ni fa.

Opening song, Bury Me Deep in Love, sounds like all of the cheese of the 80s. But in spite of all the instrumental cheese, I appreciate the energy and delivery. Has a nice build that climaxes into a swelling crescendo that they fade away at the conclusion. I found myself grooving along with Unmade Love. In general, I'm enjoying this album for background music. Its not something I'd go out of my way for, but I appreciate it nonetheless. My opinion of the album really didn't shift as it kept going. I didn't mind it being there, but I also didn't mind if it just stopped. I'm a soft 3 / 5 here. While there is a lot of 80s cheese going into this, I enjoyed the vocals, and found some of the compositions to be effective. Among those that caught my attention were Kelly's Blues, Unmade Love, and Baby Can I Walk You Home.

Never heard of this band, no clue what to expect. It feels like that genre of 80's rock that was a bit softer like Bonnie Taylor or Genesis. Has a bit of southern twang to it at points Pretty solid album. Nothing I'll go back for though.

I've never heard of The Triffids or any of the music on Calenture. The opening track ("Bury Me Deep in Love") was a rough start for me - a little too sweet. I ended up liking the band and the album more than I thought I would from the first track. "Trick of the Light", and "Holy Water" were some of my favorite tracks. I can hear the era from which the music comes. At times I was reminded of Simple Minds, Crowded House, James, Aztec Camera, and even a bit of Echo & the Bunnymen or The Lightning Seeds. I liked the album enough to listen to an additional bonus disc and found myself liking the band more the more I listened. There were a couple of tracks on the album that I never quite warmed up to, so I may not come back to the full album again.

I guess I don't understand the inclusion of this one. It has a number of really nice tracks, but I can't identify that strand of DNA that's supposed to make me understand this in a greater musical context. Great band name, though.

This grew on me a lot in the second half. Kinda just sounded like discount U2 in the front half, but the elements of folk and chamber music did add some flavor to the later half. 3.5/5

Low three. I didn’t really vibe with it and it just felt very long. Not bad, but certainly not good either.

For me nice music but his voice not that special, many UKh bands of the period I prefer.

shit goes hard but i’m not listening to 2 hours of it

Solid rock album, nothing really stood out to me but overall an enjoyable listen.

A little bit goth, psychedelic, and rock. Good effort.

Quite enjoyed that. Sounded reminiscent of James to me.

Kind of a basic 80's alt pop type album, I enjoyed Trick of the Light and many of the other songs felt like classic 80's music which made this one a pretty fun album. Never heard of this group before, but I'm surprised they weren't on the radio more. Maybe because they are an Australian band.

Pop rock

Not a favourite but better than some of the reviews I’m reading. 3/5

Not entirely sure why this is on the list, but it was an alright listening experience.

When it's an album by an Australian band I've never heard of with a name based on a classic sci-fi book, I feel like there should be two possibilities: either the greatest thing you've ever heard in your life, or a complete atrocity. Disappointingly, this was neither...just kinda boring.

Feels a bit (a lot?) like Echo & the Bunnymen, so not surprised The Triffids opened for those guys in the 80's. McComb has a nice, deep vocal style that compliments the big, sweeping musical style of this album. Very 80's (and Aussie) big music rock sound. I don't know where to place these guys in terms of everyone else putting out that sound, but I can't shake that they're an Echo & the Bunnymen knock off. I still enjoyed it a fair bit, and a good album when you need background music, but I'm not giving it any extra stars.

Moderately enjoyable album by the Thompson Twins. No? Simple Minds? No? A Flock of Seagulls? Huh? Who? The Triffids? Never heard of them.

A couple of good catchy songs. Standouts: Holy Water, Bury Me Deep in Love Others: Kelly's Blues, Save What You Can 3/5

I tried to understand the effusive praise heaped upon this album, and what I've gathered is that people are really enamored with the poetry of it all. It honestly doesn't seem like anything special to me. Forgettable. Best track: Blinder by the Hour

The first song felt like the intro to a Disney movie lol. Along with some other songs. The songwriting is not that great. Arrangements are enjoyable but not memorable. It made me laugh though so 3/5.

Alright, some decent tunes but didn't really catch my attention

It's a little surprising to see an album like this on the list. Is that because people wanted some representation from the southern hemisphere? The Triggids seem to be a pretty okay band, much better than the whole post punk movement in UK in 80s, in my opinion, at least. Songs are entertaining, but rather in a "blast from a past" way. It's always nice to learn about a new band, but I'm honestly puzzled how did it end up on this list.

This album doesn’t feel like it exists. It’s alright.

Calenture is the fourth album by Australian rock group The Triffids. The title of the album refers to a fever that affects sailors on long, hot voyages. The album was a spiritual piece of music for the band, as it explored themes of insanity, deception, and rootlessness. This is considered by some critics to be The Triffids best album - or at least they're pop album. I thought the album was well produced and believe it completely represents the band. Calenture might be the greatest album I've heard from an Australian band so far.

I don't know, it's nothing interesting, but I don't understand the very low score.. it's just meh for me

Pretty interesting stuff. 3 solid stars.

I liked this album! I am intrigued. I want to hear more. The lead singer is compelling. There’s definitely something here, the songwriting is really interesting. I wasn’t thrilled with the production overall… somewhat generic? And I’ll have to hear the back half again. But I’ll definitely give it another listen.

This was new to me. I enjoyed it well enough. It speaks to the late '80s alternative music I liked. There are some really good lyrics here and there. I did find it a bit rambly and not super memorable, though. It might just need a little more time to grow on me.

Unfortunately, I found this album rather uninteresting. 5/10

This one surprised me. Hadn't thought I'd like it much, not really being into that kind of 80s music, but it all came together really nicely. Nice melodic album. Though, probably not going on my personal playlist

Nice. A low 4.

Although it looks like an hour-long 80s flashback album, despite its themes, I must say that listening to this album brought me some good feelings. Forgettable but nice.

Woah! This album just kept going and going and going.

Some relaxed Oz rock vibes, perhaps a bit too long

Inoffensive collection of tunes. The production is pretty high end and the tunes have some catchy-ness to them but nothing stands out particularly well. Some of the chorus sections actually revert to simply repeating the same two words about 20 times (hence the title of the song) which undermines what was otherwise a decent song.

Pogotovo pjesme: A Trick of the Light, Hometown Farewell, Blinder By the Hour i zadnja stvar Save What You Can.

listen

Ik vond dit geen slecht album. Beetje Folk-Rock, met interessante teksten

I enjoyed it! 3

fine and dandy

I feel like I didn't give this quite as close a listen as it deserves. I liked it overall, but the singer sometimes came off as a bit lounge singer-ish if that makes any sense. Need to give it a closer listen, but for now I'll go with 3 stars.

Folk rock, 1987. Quite normal album, which is fine for an easy listening, but it isn't a record to remember at all. Despite the songs are really simple the project is quite entertaining.

It's the bells. But it's not cowbells. So that doesn't work for me. But it's al-ight. nothing special, though.

interesting - never heard of the band but it was okay

A more earnest, if less interesting version of the Smiths

76rq3yw e2x,,;_@r14

Good listening while waiting to check in at urgent care!

It's a real shame - the music and the songs on this album are good, but not great. It's expertly arranged and played, but it somehow misses the spark of true greatness. I guess I wanted to like this album more than I ended up doing. 3/5

Nothing overly interesting or ambitious in this one. Songs are all ok but nothing to memorable.

Very inconsistent. There's something great about variety in an album of its done well. This one could've stayed a little focused in style.

Decent album, no idea about The Triffids before it popped up, but a heavily 80s-pop rock sounding album

Jangle pop that sounds very much of its time, and specifically inspired by The Smiths, between the jangle, extensive synths, and chambered vocals and instruments. Optimistic tone, with further inspiration from folk, country, and sophisti-pop (hear that easy listening brass). It's solid, some highlights, but nothing outstanding.

I didn't have any strong feelings about this album.

There was some good writing on this album but sonically it didn't do it for me

This is the shit I sing in the shower. Cheeeeesey lyrics!

Yet another example of an album that should get more stars, but because of the Remastered-full-of-crap album version, it doesn't get what it deserves. The original album has 12 songs. It is an awesome album... But when you listen to 29 songs from a double album... with 3 versions of the same song, then it becomes boring and stale...

was aighttt

Very 80s but a pleasant listen. Some of the hooks made for solid pop songs. Kinda forgettable, with no real standouts, but a decent listen nonetheless.

Songs: Unmade Love, Blinder by the Hour, Calenture

I had never heard of them but this album was really enjoyable

281125 16:51 3 / highlights: bury me deep in love, blinder by the hour, hometown farewell kiss

Okay sound. Kind of like the cure

47. Calenture - The Triffids 29 tracks. Never heard of them. Just a shit, softer, more melancholy INXS seems a tad harsh, but it's what I keep coming back to. It's not rubbish at all, far from it. It just lacks..... something. Something significant. 3/5

This didn't really mesh with my tastes. But a distinctive voice and lyrically interesting.

Very good album with a couple of outstanding tracks.

Ja lyssna btw gårdagens album men ja klicka imisstag did not listen. Ganska friged up

Occaisonally poignant tunes with an apreciable sonic variety

Nom remarkable in anyway. Not sure why it’s on this list

I have had a very long string of 3-star albums at this point....

Pretty good lyrically and has a cool feel for a late 80s album, but nothing that’s going to stick with me forever.

Interesting mix of classic rock and new wave sounds.

Meh. Not bad but didn't love it. I picked Bury me deep in love as my fave track, seems to be the most popular also.

Some of these songs sounded like, 40% familiar but I'm pretty sure I haven't heard them before.

Had genuinely never heard of them before. First track was super catchy. Reminded me of a “less sad” Cure

Easy listening. Inoffensive. Just what I needed at the time. Wouldn't listen to it again.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Bury Me Deep In Love, Hometown Farewell Kiss, Blinder By The Hour, Save What You Can, Baby I Can Walk You Home*, Region Unknown*, Love The Fever*, Bad News Reminds Me Of You*, Everything You Touch Turns To Time* Cutting Edge: None * = bonus track Overall Notes: Never heard of these guys even though they're in my musical wheelhouse. Reminded me of a more guitar driven Go-Betweens. Like this a fair amount, especially the bonus tracks, all of which I saved. If they were on the original album I would've rounded this up to a 4, but as it stands it's a 3.5 rounded down.

New band for me! Massively produced late 80's Aussie rock. Best Tracks: Bury Me Deep In Love, A Trick of the Light, Save What You Can

Not bad, but a bit boring and one-note for me.

Wow, a band I've never heard of! this album was pretty good, not great, but I enjoyed it, as it kinda felt like a mix of New Order, The Smiths, and every 80's rock band music. I don't know if i'll ever add these songs to my go-to playlists, i'd have to listen to it again a few times, but this was very enjoyable!

This is a band that hasn't quite determined their sound. Could be Pop or rock or, what I'm going to call, Australian country.

Is alright.

This is a fine record and everything, but almost everything else I've heard by then has been better.

Blinder by the Hour is the standout for me

Vagabond Holes was a great song, everything else just kind of blends together. not bad , just down the middle rock

Some potential here, but didn’t catch me on the first listen. Might be worth a revisit!

A very bland album for me. I found the vocals quite annoying after a while. Apart from that nothing really stood out. Didn’t hate it enough for a one star but not one I will remember for long.

Meh... Mas o menos....

Not for me this album. Didn't listen much so maybe I'm not being fair but didn't want to waste good music time listening to something that didn't immediately appeal

I know I listened to this last week, but I really can’t remember anything about it, and can’t be bothered enough to related to it now. Never a good sign.

Utterly forgettable, sorry.

Spotify has the release date of this album as 2005, so when it started I thought wow they did a great job of making this sound like the cheesiest 80s shit of all time. Turns out it was originally released in 1986 and boy does it sound like it. This album stinks, it’s technically fine, but everything about it is 80s cheese and I did not enjoy it for one second.

It lacks identity, I could get the comparisons to Nick Cave and Tears for Fears if only the music was on par with those artists. 7 note melodies are common, and everything is played at a similar moderate pace. God dammit shake me awake for once.

I couldn’t get into any of these songs and kept looking to see when it might be over.

"Hey mum, can we buy the new INXS album?" "No, we have that at home".

I found this fairly innocuous as far as background music. It is completely forgettable

Hmm, there were moments here that were alright, but I thought overall it was pretentious and over produced. A pretty low value of 2.0 stars for me.

Not for me. Not the worst thing I've ever listened to.

So mid I am so sick of the obsession with this kind of music

80's pop sound that I couldn't get into

bored! 2

Boring

Not quite my mood or tempo.

Really not my vibe

5 / 10

Bury me deep somewhere so I don't have hear this album anymore.

I did not really get it. Maybe sounds like the Australian version of the BoDeans. Did not really jive with me, but I guess that have a big following. I can see them being good live, maybe?

2/5. This album is the musical equivalent of eating unseasoned boiled chicken and rice. Like sure it will sustain you, it functions as music, but it’s still pretty god damn bland. For an album that’s supposed to be about “insanity and deception” I really didn’t feel that at any point. I don’t really have anything interesting to say for this one because the album is so uninteresting.

There is a clear bias in this list towards british pop bands from the 80s, and I have to admit that I don't see the appeal. I know this band is Australian, but they are in the same vein as the other bands that just kind of suck (Dexy's Midnight Runners, Pet Shop Boys...the list is massive). Fuck this mediocre band.

Maybe there would be something there if you dropped the list 80s Phil Collins instrumentation and production, but as such there is not much here to recommend. Throw will sergeant in here and maybe it rises to average, occasionally good, but that’s not what this is.

rubbish

Welp I was hoping that a band named after gigantic murderous postapocalyptic plants would be my kind of thing, but ah ha ha ha no This is like U2 minus any of the things that are appealing to me about U2. Like if U2 decided that they wanted to expand to an even more mainstream audience and told the producer "please make us sound more like Neil Diamond." I liked the title track (a minute or so of creepy piano that ends with a phrase that reminds me of Bowie's "Moss Garden”), so I’ll give it 2 stars.

Bury Me Deep In Love // 2.5/5

Long, boring with a dated sound.

I liked the vocals on this album (very reminiscent of Tim Booth from James), and it had a few tracks I enjoyed. The ending track was an odd note to end on, leaving the album with no momentum. Overall I didn't hate this nearly as much as many of the comments, but I agree with the overall opinion that it's an odd choice for this list. 4/10

not bad

bury me deep doesn‘t sound right when you just watched the episode from 911 where a man almost got buried alive besides that the album is not terrific

complete shlock omg i’m kinda gagged…

I’ve owned this record for almost forty years, and friends of mine hail it as outstanding, but I’ve never liked it. The rich dramatic vocal style doesn’t work for me, the production is commercial and sounds now horribly dated (didn’t sound great then), and the songs are a real mixed bag. I don’t understand the reverence in which it’s held, and am really surprised to find it on this list. 2/5

not my kinda jams but they’re alright

The concept is there. However, it's executed so poorly. The lyrics read like a parody, and the songs sound like they are working around McComb's voice rather than with him. While it's not the worst thing I've ever heard, these topics and feelings are portrayed so much better in other songs from this time period. I wouldn't recommend it, let alone group it with "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die."

I had never heard of the Triffids or this album prior to listening to this one. This is one of those albums that pops up on this list that I have to wonder how it got here. Nothing bad about it, but pretty boring. Some of the songs just weren't very good. Seemed a little bit like Nick Cave does yacht rock to me. When I read up on the album, it didn't do well commercially and didn't seem to be influential in any way. Most of the reviews were just middle of the road. It was re-released in 2007 as a 2 disc set with some bonus songs at the end of disc 1 and some rehearsal and studio cuts of the original album songs on disc 2. Let's just say that I only listened to the original songs on the original album and skipped the rest. Again, not because they were bad, but because I have better things to do with my Saturday morning.

Groupe inconnu. =>2/5

Meh…kind of boring and the songs sound the same. They have a similar vibe as Echo and the Bunnymen which I like.

This selection is blah…one I really don’t an have opinion one way or another. Totally just background music.

I like the singer’s voice and the whole vibe is reminiscent of a lot of 80s stuff I love. But this album grates in places and drags in others. Some cool moments, but not something I think I’ll revisit in its entirety.

Washed over me, nothing special

Didn’t really care for it. Generic 80s pop

Just not my personal type of music

I see the vibe. I think they’re talented. I just wouldn’t choose to listen to this again

4/10 - A few fun/catchy songs. Very 80s in sound. Sounds to me like it was inspired by Bruce Hornsby “The Way it is”.

Feels like a poor man's Echo & The Bunnymen. Not something I would relisten to but I did like A Trick of the Light and Blinder by the Hour. 5/10

2 hours is a bit much ngl

Reminds me of 80s independent music, but the vocals are dull and the music not really inspirational 2.5/5

This was like a parody of an 80s album

kind of bland but it's not as bad as everyone claims

Bezveze album, baš ne znam šta bih mislila. Ne mogu ga ni pohvaliti ni posrati, eto. 2/5, 3/10

The cheesiness of this album alone keeps factory farming alive.

in no way merits inclusion on a list of a 1,001 anythings.

Meh. The're fine I guess. Not offensive, but nothing special. Why are they on this list??? Strikes me as another one of those deals where someone creating the list just thinks it looks cool to include obscure bands even when they're not worthy.

It’s always cool seeing Aussie’s on here but in this case, this was probably one of the most meh albums I’ve ever heard.

Okay it's pretty boring but all the reviews about it being bad Christian rock I'm not picking up on. It's just kinda dull indie music.

Just within the scope of the 1001 Albums Generator, I've heard so many other acts make better versions of this style of music. This is only a must listen if you need an annoyingly mediocre baseline to make other acts like New Order sound even better by comparison.

It’s ok. Fairly bland, formulaic eighties really. Not much else to say. Won’t be listening to it again.

This flirted with 1 star but I almost liked Trick if the Light, so... I don't like the voice, songs or production for most of these. Meh.

Parts felt like they were going to build into something, however overall it didn't capture me.

Let down by weak songwriting

The instrumentation is beautiful, the production sublime, but the songwriting is drab and boring. At its best, a rare song like Blinded by t!he Hour reminds me positively of Echo & the Bunnymen, but most of it was uninspiring.

I mean, it definitely sounds Australian whatever that means.

Not loving this album. It sounds 80s but tired and not as fun or deep as other bands.

As a child of the 80s, I have developed a taste for plenty of cheese, but I guess because I didn't hear this in my tender years, this variety of Limburger never imprinted on me.

Yeah, this really isn’t great. I was cringing at times at the terrible lyrics and the amateurish feel of it all. It comes off like a high school musical production. Only saved from a one when I realised 2nd time around that I didn’t have to listen to the last 5 tracks on disc 1 as they are the extras

Big standard 80s rock

Little cheese, not much substance musically, lyrics are mid. Second song was kinda cool. Everything else jus blended together into boring 80s indie rock. 2

Unmade Love.

Eh. Bland and dated. I might like the songs if they were done acoustically or in some format without the dated production, but did nothing for me as is.

A fairly pedestrian album without much to be excited about.

Eh. Not really my thing

One or two decent songs but not a good overall package

Sounds like a bunch of mid-tier 90s Irish Eurovision entries.

"we have echo and the bunnymen in australia" the echo and the bunnymen in australia:

Idk, I only liked one song

Não me puxou

Not my favorite. Couldn’t get interested. Forgot every song after it ended.

Some good songs but other than that painfully average

Never heard of this band. Interesting listen. First song was the best.

I strongly disagree with the book editor who suggested we need a “gospel-indie” genre. No, no we do not. Especially if it encourages more music like this. I did give it at least two listens because I kept thinking I was missing something. I wasn’t.

There’s nothing in this music that raises it above anything else. The lead singer sounds like some random guy in the crowd who got pulled on stage by the band and is experiencing the only exciting thing that will ever happen to him…never moving forward to try to have newer better experiences. He’ll still be talking about it in 40 years to people who don’t really care but are stuck in a conversation that they can’t get out of.

I felt like it went on forever and most songs just blended together into one long melancholic sound

Not sure WTF, but it coo

There's nothing inherently wrong with the album, there's just no depth to it.

I don't know anything about the Triffids, other than what I just read on Wikipedia. Laid back alternative rock, pleasant enough but pretty dull. Gave up after six tracks

Never heard of this group. Based on the name, I can only assume they were another rock group out of the UK. Sorry, they're Australian. Anyway, this was fine. Kind of a lighter and folkier/country sound. But most notably, it sounded like an inferior version of pretty much any other 80's new wave group. Like most albums in this list, somewhat unmemorable at the end of the day.

Not my favorite. Trick of the light is nice

There's nothing interesting in this.

I’ve never heard of this band before. I was a bit hopeful seeing that this was released in 1987, still an exciting time for music, but was pretty disappointed with how bland this album sounded not just in style but in production. Another one of those albums that makes me wonder what kind of biases helped put this on the list. It’s not entirely terrible though. Maybe I’ll check out their albums before this one to see where they came from but I’m in no rush to do so and there’s a good chance I’ll never get around to doing that.

They need to remove this album from the list. Boring, bland and uninspired with not a single standout track. Also way too long! Meh.

Don't Care

++: Trick of the Light, Blinder by the Hour, Vagabond Holes, Calenture +: Hometown Farewell Kiss +-: Bury Me Deep in Love, Kelly's Blues, Unmade Love, Open for You, Holy Water -: Jerdacuttup Man, Save What You Can 4,5/10

Not that good at all. What made it special? Not sure. What qualified it? Not sure. Would I listen to it again? Nope

Better than Morrissey

Just couldn’t get into it. It’s like a watered down Depeche Mode.

we’re just adding fucking anything to this list aren’t we

Very 80s pop rock, taking itself a bit too seriously for how throwaway most of it sounds. Occasionally sounded like a low quality Duran Duran. There were about 3 bits I liked that turned out to just be small turns in otherwise bland songs. Yeah not for me this.

I feel I've hamstrung myself here, by giving Ryan Adams 2.5 yesterday..... This is way more interesting, and I enjoyed it more, but not sure it's worth more than 2.5. I think the public reviews make this sound awful, it really isn't. Pretty interesting in parts. Sounds 80s, but not full of all the synth nonsense. I won't be back I doubt and another 2.5, but it wasn't bad

Bad 80’s Rock. This album was released in Australia in 1987 where it topped out as an album at # 32 in their charts (i had to look them up because I had no recollection of ever hearing of them before) and it was rereleased in the 2000’s with 5 bonus tracks. Two discs and 29 songs in all and I will never get those 2 hours of my life back. This could easily have been one of the bands playing in Adam Sadler’s “Wedding Singer” movie and no one would have thought twice about it. No clue how # 32 on the Aussie charts equates to one of the 1001 must listen albums of all time, but it did.

Soooo, that's what alt rock in Autralia sounded like in the 80s. Now I know.

Not very uplifting, but more uplifting than Nick Cave.

Too long and not really doing much for me. New wave pop rock without much flair. 2.5/5

Thought it was very long and it became boring

Random thoughts: * I thought this was a double album when I put this on. I listened to the first few songs and thought there was no way I could make it through this whole album! I was thankful when I heard a different version of Bury Me Deep in Love later on. Whew! * I guess that reaction kind of sums up my thoughts on The Triffids. Not sure I'd turn to this again as it felt like a chore to get through. * It wasn't bad but just blah and boring 80s. Sounded like a toned down version of Dexy's Midnight Runners mixed with a subpar version of U2. * I was certain this group was Scottish or Irish or something from the British isles. I was surprised to learn they were from Australia. * Jerdacuttup is a rural town in Western Australia. I thought it was some British slang I wasn't aware of. It's just a place. * Anyway, I listened to this and I can tell anyone that asks, I've listened to it. Chances of anyone asking, basically 0%.

Fraaaaaaank music

I like INXS more

Interesting

It definitely is and sounds of it's time. And I do enjoy new wave, but nothing really wowed me here. I like the vocals and the lyrics are interesting sometimes.

It could have been worse.

As a big fan of Dave and The Triffids I have to say there is not a lot to recommend here. Bury Me Deep and Trick of the Light are fine tracks, but I think this was the album where the record company brought in session players and tried to make it all about Dave. Which in effect meant it was over for them as a band. I'd recommend Treeless Plain and Born Sandy Devotional but not this deadbeats.

When this album started I couldn’t understand why people in the reviews were so harsh. It seemed quite pleasant. By the end I totally understood L.

Not necessarily bad songs but rather an absence of great songs. Just felt kind of meh about it.

Its fine. It sounds like background music from heartbeat a little bit. I liked kelly's blues, I didnt like bury me deep. Not a fan of lyrics theyre just "oh woman pretty we took a drive blah blah". The rest of the album was listened to in background and I took very little in.

Real mixed on this one. At first I thought it was one of those 90s UK/Irish folk bands (similar to like an XTC). Then I saw they were Australian but the vibe still remained. It's got a key 90s touch, but so much of this album and its songs seem redundant. I really hate to say it because the songs are largely well made with this orchestral flair and good musicianship, but here a little bit out from listening to it and I cannot tell you a single song that was on it.

My first impression of this before starting it was that it was going to be a cheesy album. And it was, 'Bury Me Deep In Love' cemented that feeling straight away. Many tracks sounded very similar to each other, and I just couldn't get past the feeling that this just felt like a very 80s sounding uninspired album. Don't want to give it another swing, so will settle for 2 stars.

Besides the one 1 minute long piano interlude towards the end, it was quite tiring and not interesting in the slightest. It drained me so much from energy, it wouldn't even be a good soothing evening album. It's just... empty.

These songs are just really boring to me.
