Even without the language barrier, this isn't for me.

Really not a fan of world music. It did have some jazzy elements, though.

Enjoyed the rhythms and melodies but again, could not enjoy the meaning of the songs because I don’t speak the language.

Makes me want to put on a bright red summer dress, book a flight to Brazil and blast this album while sitting by the beach with a cocktail in hand, dancing my cares away to its refreshing tunes and Elis Regina's smooth voice. In the wise words of Trinity the Tuck, I don't know what the fuck she's saying but girl, I am living!

People who say that Portuguese sounds Slavic were right. I'm Slavic myself, and this felt like listening to a bizarro version of my language. It was cool at first, but I was so fucking done with it by the fifth song and then it just kept going and going. I assume that understanding the lyrics would make this better, but then again, I barely pay attention to lyrics anyways.

It’s a shame I don’t understand French, because I found the music charming and the vocals enticing. Any of these songs could be peppered into an indie film like a “(500) Days of Summer” to give it a bit of exotic flair. I think in English, my score would of been higher.

First impression: wow, this first song has me hooked right from the start! This album is super tight; really jazzy and funky, polished production, and just tons of great little musical moments and riffs. I'm pretty blown away; first song was a 5/5, and the rest of the record backed it up. Last track is such a banger!

I liked this. Definitely not my kind of normal listening, but I enjoyed it and would listen again. I liked the jazzy numbers most. 3.5/5

I am not well versed in Spanish at all, but I thought that this album was awesome. So full of energy and passion; you can tell the artist genuinely cares about what she does here (and is good at it).

This started promisingly; I’m all for snappy Latin rhythms and airy acoustic guitars that transport me to a sunny South American village. But I felt like as the album went on those Brazilian vibes got watered down and replaced with a more generic brand of smooth jazz/funk which is less appealing to me. 2.5

Nice, calming music. Nothing more, nothing less, but that's a hell of an achievement on its own. P.S. Is it me, or are the only exceptions to English this list will allow (while pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist) come from Brazil?

3.4 - Some cool tracks on here (e.g. “Rebento”) but overall it means too heavily in the realm of smooth jazz and quiet storm. I listens to the record a second time and found myself skipping many of the songs.

Normally, with a 'world' music record, my review reads something like 'I font know enough to understand this, but I get that it's culturally important. With this, I'dsay it's made me want to go away and discover more about Eli's Regina and Brazilian music in general, so it's already a cut above some of the prior ones

Boring 70's soft rock en Español. I don't get it. It's fine. I didn't want to Van Gogh my ears or anything but surely there are better albums that didn't make this list.

this is the kind of music I came to this project for. this album doesn't exist according to Wikipedia and spotify lol. its like prog-funk? idk what to call it but its pretty badass. I like the variety of sounds on the album and different sections and stuff, its pretty cool.

I listened to this a while ago

Pretty great listen but as someone else pointed out in another review, kind of cheating with it being a compilation album. Therefore this album on the 1001 book kind of feels similar to Legend by Bob Marley being ranked 48 on Rolling Stone's greatest albums of all time list.

Parts of this I liked. The last track was fun in particular.

Vento De Maio is only another 2/5 effort but it's quite a bit more interesting than some of the non-English albums we've had, or Brasilian albums, like Sai Dessa is really fun. Plenty of misses, but some decent stuff in there, she has a cool voice.

Definitely better than the Brazilian album we had yesterday - has a lot more edge to it, and attitude. Think it just sneaks a three, although not sure I'd ever listen to it again.

I couldn't find this exact album but I listened to multiple Elis Regina albums. I enjoyed the hell out of them! I don't speak the language but her voice is quite soothing. She can really sing.

Don't really know much about this style of music (the softer, vocalist end of Brazilian jazz), but I can't really see that this album is anything special. It seems to be a compilation of miscellaneous tracks released after she died. I imagine it sold well, and that's the only reason it ended up here. It sounds alright. I would be open to hearing a proper album of hers. 2.5* for this one though.

I'm always excited to see an album that I've never heard of on here. There's nothing like the feeling of falling in love with an album that you didn't know existed just minutes before. I didn't fall in love with this album, but still the sentiment remains. Part of the problem with this album was that I don't have any context for why it's important. Wikipedia was no help, since this album isn't even listed on her Wikipedia page. It's pleasant enough, but there was nothing to really draw me in. Part of the problem was that the tone on the bass and guitar were sounds that I associate with muzak. Not bad, and perhaps not her fault, but still sounds that I associated with low effort music designed to fade into the background. Here vocals are good, but not sufficient to explain to me why this album is considered notable 3/5

This was quite meh. None of the songs stood out, and I simply tuned it out as background music. She did have a lovely voice though.

Genre: MPB 4/5 This was quite the happy surprise. Once realizing this album, Vento de maio, was a sort of reissue/posthumous release of a not-as-well known Brazilian artist, Elis Regina, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was that I'm certainly a fan of MPB (música popular brasileira). Earlier in this exercise, I received an album from the Tropicália movement in Brazil (Caetano Veloso), which I enjoyed quite a lot. This I enjoyed even more! From Elis Regina's stunning voice, to the delightful mixture of dance tracks and ballads, to the top notch production methods utilized in these recordings, this album really took me for a spin. The title track is tremendous, with one of the best basslines so far out of the 80+ albums I've reviewed so far from this book. She can also slow it down and let her voice really take off on ballads like Rebento, one of my favorite tracks from the album. I was super happy as the album moved along, always giving me some musical nuggets of enjoyment from track to track. Really good shit.

This is a very good selection of songs from Elis Regina to the international market, even though it's lot really clear for me where does it fits in her official discography. Nonetheless, it's a great showcase of her beautiful voice, her impressive range and her ability to make it work with a variaty of musical styles - MPB, samba and pop. This is the greatest voice of brazilian music and songs like "Rebento", "Se eu quiser falar com deus" and "Aprendendo a Jogar" makes it very clear.

p400, 1978. 2 stars. Not my thing, but pleasant enough of its type. Nice voice, nothing exceptional though, and a lot of the arrangements are very 70s and haven't aged well. This album needs a warm sunny day to bring the best out of it, and we tend not to get them in Stoke. Not sure why this is on the list, definitely not essential.

I love the guitar throughout, that jazzy bossa nova style is so cool to me. Her voice seems so effortless and seductive, must be a Brazilian thing. There is some variation in styles from song to song that keeps it interesting as well, from slow love sounding songs to more upbeat fast paced, and some theatrical songs sounding like they were taken from a musical and I can almost picture the movie.

Nice bit of Bossa-Nova I like her voice and there are some nice tunes but I am not sure this is as good as say Gilberto Rey's classics.

Wow. What an amazing voice. It felt like I was listening to a soap opera, but a good one. So much drama and emotion. I don't speak Portuguese so it might have been a drama about trapped wind or tumble dryers for all I know, but I don't think it was. When it came up this morning I thought "oh no this will be bossa boring", but I actually loved it.

I don't speak the same language, but I can still appreciate the gorgeousness of her voice. I deliberately didn't read much about the album either, but really enjoyed it. Didn't catch the names of any songs, or any of the guest vocalists, but a solid 4 ⭐ for me

Incredible! I have never heard of this artist, I have never heard of Brazilian jazz or whatever this is. But the music is just great. And the singer is incredible even though I do not understand the language she sings in, and the music just has a great jazz punk rock fusion going on. Like a cosmic gumbo.

I love it when you grow fonder with each listen. I didn't get enough time with this today, but I made my mother and son listen to it, and that made three generations who enjoyed it. I was so happy to be introduced to Elis Regina today. I look forward to spending lots more time with her. My first favorite today had to be "Só Deus É Quem Sabe." Really took me to a dreamland.

When I was a kid I loved going through other people’s record collections and playing new albums. I remember discovering Roger Whitaker, Marty Robbins and Dr. Hook at my aunt’s house. My parents collection lead me to Fleetwood Mac, Willie Nelson, Sam Cooke, Mohamed El-Bakker & His Oriental Ensemble, Waylon Jennings, Barbra Streisand, Santana and Bette Midler. My sister’s collection turned me on to the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, .38 Special, Elton John and Bad Company. Today I realized that I am loving this web site so much because each day feels like pulling a new record out of someone’s unexplored record collection. A new album cover appears and I instantly begin to speculate on what exciting new listening experience is next… Like the wildly random listening experiences of my youth, after listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Aerosmith out pops some smooth, jazzy Brazilian music from the 70s. And jazzed I am! Halfway through this album my stress had melted away and the morning was looking great! Elis Regina’s vocal delivery is always spot-on. The arrangements are never boring. The supporting vocals fantastic. I love this album so much. This is another perfect listening experience is a week of perfect listening experiences. I would have replayed VENTO DE MAIO over and over as a kid, and have already started doing so as an adult. From the interesting key of the opening song “Vento de Maio” through the glorious choir in “O Trem Azul” to the groovy guitar and scatting in the closing song “Aprendendo a Jogar” I enjoyed every note. A truly wonderful album!

I've never heard of this album nor Elis Regina before. I enjoyed it as background music but can't really see myself revisiting it though. Nice to get an artist and album I have never heard of.

The instruments are so crisp. I was expecting something that sounded a lot more dated. Now - there is a "Muzak" quality to it here and there, but overall - it's a jaunty little album. As I've said before, these world language albums are tricky because I focus much more on the sound than the lyrics due to my not understanding the native language. That can be a detractor since, as I said - while crisp, some of it sounds like it would play in a mall or elevator. Rebento had a Stevie Wonder meets Elton John thing going on, which I liked! Album really kicks in with the O Medo De Amar track that sounds like Steely Dan came in and backed it musically! This is probably one of my favorite non-English albums so far!

It really isn't for me. I'm sure some people loved it, but will avoid giving it my first 1 star too.

I thought I had never heard of this, even after listening to a couple of songs. However, later I realised Elis Regina performed the world famous duet Aguas de Marco with Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is the opener of the album Elis & Tom from 1974, which is so much better than this compilation. Very strange to include it in the list.

A few really interesting tracks on here - the opening son and Sai Dessa and Outro Cais, but there's a lot of fluff too. Was fun to listen to but probably won't go back outside of a few standout tracks. A strong 3.5 but not quite a 4 in my eyes.

Brazilian music is never unwelcome. A good thing, because I had to go looking for this one a little bit. I ended up settling on the Hemisphere release, which at least on Discogs is categorized as a European reissue of "Elis" from 1980. In any case, it displays a variety of styles by Elis, as one might expect from a compilation. That's nice, but the instrumentals tend to be pretty uninteresting: The percussion choices were especially flat for Brazilian music. O Medo De Amar... was a standout, and Aprendendo Jogar captures the spirit of play well and, I imagine, makes a good opener to the Brazilian release (with a different tracklist). Other than that I'd like to hear her voice on a more cohesive set of tracks.

Fine. Not really what I listen to where Brazilian music is concerned - more into their fusion and samba (will we have any Jorge Ben Jor, I wonder?) scenes than tropicalia. Tasteful, smooth and jazzy in equal parts, but disappeared from memory almost the moment it finished. Something something seduced by a teacher something.

Beautiful voice, very cool jazzy sound. Clearly an evolution from bossa nova, the album has a pop feel with a cool Latin groove throughout. I don’t speak a bit of Portuguese so the lyrics are lost on me, but the singing makes up some for the message being lost on me.

Elis has a beautiful voice, I'm very happy this website is introducing me to more different kinds of music! My favourite has to be "Só Deus é Quem Sabe" her voice is so soft and tender, with the swirling instrumentation it is certainly divine! Quite a lovely album, may revisit in the future, but certainly not at the top of my list.

This was a first listen to an artist that I don’t know. Elis is talented, but the album wasn’t for me.

I'm not sure what's happening, but I like it! A captivating listen, despite not understanding the lyrical piece. Generally fun and funky but both the emotional highs and lows are conveyed very well. In particular, "o medo de Amar" was definitely slapping!

This was nice, but not really my tempo. Not understanding the language is also a barrier for me to really get into it, but makes for nice background music.

There are a few fun music bits here, but mostly this is pretty tedious. Perhaps it wouldn't feel that way if I knew the language, but I don't, so it does.

A really nice Brazilian jazz album with some great bass licks throughout. It has a calm lounge feel that would sound even better spinning in my living room. A great record that I will revisit over and over again.

I had a harder time getting into this than I thought I would. Interesting that this stands out a little against a lot of other Brazilian music and that bossa nova style. I wish I could understand the lyrics. I might have to relisten to really start to feel it

Eli’s had a beautiful voice. Not being bi-lingual was a definite block in understanding lyrics. With that being said I feel unqualified to give this album a fair rating. The music was pleasant playing in the background. Will mention it was difficult to find the album.

So, I’m wondering, with the zillions of Brazilian artists out there, how they make the decision which few to add to this list. Anyway, Regina has a beautiful voice and I like the variety of styles and arrangements. Spotify says this from ‘98 which I thought was odd, but it’s actually from ’78.

“Vento De Maio” by Elis Regina (1978) Great music in the genre of Brazilian jazz, but without a translation of the lyrics, it’s difficult for me to assess this as an album. Elis Regina’s voice is very nice, especially in the lowest end of her considerable range, almost if she has ‘pedal tones’ down there. She’s a little unsteady on pitch, but has excellent diction and fine command of very challenging melodies. She has fine vibrato, which, interestingly, she rarely uses, indicating she doesn’t rely on it for pitch control. Some of it you have to hear to believe. One of the huge strengths of this album is the glorious jazz orchestral arrangements, beautifully executing formidable time signatures, rhythmic shifts, and unusual harmonic colorings. Highly professional—and beautifully recorded and mixed. This, along with spare but tasteful backing vocals, makes it an excellent listening experience. Too bad this album is not available on in the iTunes Store (although there is a compilation album which has most of these songs. I bought it and plan to add it to my small but growing Brazilian jazz collection. I highly recommend Elis Regina. Tragic end at age 36, though. Don’t do drugs, folks. 4/5

There was a higher than normal barrier for entry on this album but once that hurdle was crossed, I really liked this one. Me te amo latin jazz. I'm not sure if this is as jazzy as it is upbeat but these are the songs I picture playing on the little radios in the shopping center in an island town. When I listen to this I'm on island time but there were some I wasn't a fan of. I'd say this was my least favorite of these albums we have heard so far but that is not a knock.

This album seems more expressive than other foreign language albums.

This Brazilian pop album is pleasant enough, Regina has a lovely voice and range but I don’t think it is up to the high standards of David Byrne’s Lauka Bop label where complies a killer record featuring seminal Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento etc. Now that is a banger of a Brazilian record.

Classic Brazilian music - I generally like the genre and this was alright. 6/10.

Es un disco muy tranquilo, para escuchar una tarde de verano en la terraza tomando un Gin Tónic. Dentro del genero de la música brasileña es interesante y reconocido en su tierra pero aún así no creo que pueda marcar profundamen. Lo que sí se puede decir es que puede ser una puerta a conocer más música Brasileña. Dentro del repertorio de canciones del disco la que más me ha gustado ha sido Tiro Ao Álvaro.

El albúm tiene dos canciones que me han parecido muy originales, vento de maio y o que foi feito devera, son las que me han llamado la atención, el resto se pueden escuchar pero poco más, no es album que vaya a a volver a escuchar.

Listened to the wrong album first, nothing that really stood out to me. Good vocals I guess and a song here or there that was kind of cool to listen to but not something I'd come back to.

Otro disco de música jazz y brasileña. No conocía a esta cantante, aunque seguro que la he escuchado sin saber quien era. Con una carrera tan corta (murió con 36 años) es lógico que no sea conocida para el público en general. Suena muy bien en general y "Tiro Ao Álvaro" es pura música tropical. "Saudade eterna" también me ha gustado. Para mi gusto ha sido interesante pero no es un disco al que vaya a volver.

First (and hopefully last) album that wasn't available on Apple Music. I really liked this though! Sounded much more modern and swinging than what I would have expected from a world music album. Very engaging beats, good singing. Not too much that stuck with me, but still some great songs to pull from here. I'll never say no to some Latin Jazz! Favorite songs: Vento de Maio, Nova Estacao, O Trem Azul. Album art: I like this picture, especially the color grading. Too bad I won't see it on my phone for the tracks I saved. 4/5

Only non apple itunes one so far. The music was interesting, but never felt i was enjoying the groove from it. Pretty much all the up tempo tracks ruin the vibe for me, and not much worth revisiting here.

It’s very good. Hints of disco. She aged into the late 70’s nicely after some stellar early albums. 3.5.

I think some of this may be lost on me(through not understanding the lyrics *in spanish) but I have to say her voice is amazing and you can still feel the emotion coming through. The instrumentals are also very well done. I enjoyed this album, other than not understanding it.

I couldn't find this album, I did listen to some songs from this artist and found the music charming and engaging.

Kinda surprised to see this album vs "Elis & Tom" or one of her albums from the 60s or early 70s. Favorite track is "O Que Foi..."

Culturally I have no touchpoint here, it's nice though.

Kind of Jazz, kind of pop. I have a sad disconnect since I can’t understand what she’s singing. But, I like it.

Fuck yeah. O Medo De Amar O Medo De Ser Livre is an absolute tune and a half. Whole album 10/10 tight, funky, big lead breaks, huge voice and perfectly paced. Aprehendo a Jogar and Sai Dessa also biggies. I wish I spoke Portuguese

Just not my style. Brazilian music. But she has a cool voice and some of the songs are full of energy. Others are a bit sad.

Ok, so this album (or what I assume is this album, because I couldn't find this album, but I found an album that has this song) is incredible. I am totally getting this shit on vinyl and will be cooking and hosting people to this shit.

What a mysterious album. Not on Spotify, not on Wikipedia, not by an artist I've ever heard of. Turns out it's a posthumous compilation, and she's a Brazilian legend. And let it be known, I'm floored. It's like proggy funky samba Amy Winehouse, but also there's disco and rock infusions too. I can't get over how good it is, especially on the back half. Only rating it 4 stars because I don't believe in the 5 Star Compilation, but this is up there, and definitely makes me want to check out her full albums.

So dope! What a fun trip. It's definitely got a standard latin music vibe, but also a dreamy jazzy breathy fun thing going on. The whole album reminds me of that one song by Stereolab...Rainbow Conversation.

She's clearly a very talented singer with incredible artistic range. This didn't grab me, and that's as much about the music as it is the fact that it's a foreign language album. Best track: Tiro Ao Álvaro
