The music islet was rather good, but I didn't really care for the singing--and not because I couldn't understand it, she just wasn't a great singer. Three fact it was in Portuguese didn't really help. Probably would've been another rank higher if it was instrumental. 2.5/5

Itse musiikista mä tykkäsin tosi paljon ja tää ansaitsis isot pisteet, mutta nyt ne jää ihan niinkin alas kun kakkoseen. Kuuntelin artistin muita levyjä ja tykkäsin niistäkin. Ärsyttävän laiskaa vaan että lustalla on kokkari. Kivaa toisaalta se että muutakin kun iänikuista britti- tai jenkkiosastoa. 2/5

Hilariously cheesy, when not simply almost shockingly awful. To be clear it's not the non-English aspect of the vocals (which I've loved from e.g. Milton Nascimento). This is falling on its own (de)merits. However in good conscience I can't give it a 1 to lie with the drek of Fatboy Slims, Lou Reeds, and Limp Bizkits since there's obviously talent here but I'll hopefully never listen again. 3/10 2 stars

This was my first time listening to Elis Regina, and this album was okay. I'm not very knowledgeable about jazz music, so I always have a hard time assessing albums like this. Elis's voice was nice, and there were some arrangements on some of the songs that were good, but this wasn't really my cup of my tea.

The music is fine; however, this is a compilation reissue rather than an actual album, so the sequencing BLOWS and the production of each album clashes.

Couldn’t find this one, so listened to a couple of her other albums. Very niche this one, so be prepared. Unless Bossa Nova Samaba Jazz is your bag, then it might not do too much for you.

The vision of the album is clear and well executed. The genre just seems limited.

2/5. Interesting listen as all of the lyrics are in Spanish. The instrumentation was rather good, but simply because it’s not something I would pick up and listen to; I assigned it the appropriate rating.

Day 101 Here's a really strange one! Despite Elisis Regina being a very popular Brazilian singer, there is close to none information about Vento de Maio: it seems to be a posthumous compilation, and it is not even clear when it was released; some sources state 1978, some others 1980. To add weirdness to the confusion, Ms Regina passed away from an overdose in her mid 30s in 1982; she hadn't retired, quite the opposite, she was at the peak of her career, so how does this count as posthumous? Anyways, posthumous or not, what strikes me is the choice of a compilation, and a minor one that doesn't even cover the entirety of her extensive career. In 1978 Regina released a proper album titled Transversal do Tempo which bears a very similar cover photo. My guess is that the book's writers fucked this one up entirely, which is really, but really sad, as it comes across as a failed attempt at compensating for the Anglo Saxon hegemony in popular music, a failure that does nothing but confirm said hegemony. All this, plus the fact that the record lacks in cohesion, distracted me from experiencing Regina's astonishing singing abilities. Also the production is problematic at points, sounding as if she was backed by an average fusion band, a common issue (or one I am familiar with) in recordings from both Brazil and Argentina at the time. I wasn't happy with what I heard but I suspected that there was a lot of potential, so I went with one of the Apple Music picks, Falso Brilhante. Now that's much more like it. There are a couple of bluesy numbers, a couple of more jazz-rock oriented that sound much better than those on the the other record, two Argentinean folk songs (both countries were very close in terms of musical exploration at the time), some mighty prog, and one traditional song, Fascinação, that I am sure heard by someone else but couldn't tell who. But most importantly, this is all Brazilian music at its best. Long story short, if you are a music fan, don't just settle on the records featured on this book, especially when it comes from world artists, but  be curious and do explore further, you might find some quite hidden gems. Rating: Book pick: 1 Apple Music pick: 10

I've gotten a handful of hidden gems from this list and I thought this was going to be another one, but for whatever reason this just fell flat for me. I really can't explain why but every song just felt a bit off. I really liked the suggested songs that played after this so there must be something to it, but I couldn't find it. 2.5 stars

Not usually the type of music I'd listen to, but not totally out of my league. Apredendo a jogar stood out.

Very interesting story about life and career of Elis Regina, about whom I have never heard before. The problem is that her music is not really up my alley, and I had immensely hard time trying to sit through not even the whole album, but even any song from it. Great voice, very confident style, but I will be staying away from this music in foreseeable future.

I actually really like her more "traditional" stuff. But this collection of songs I didn't really get into.

People who say that Portuguese sounds Slavic were right. I'm Slavic myself, and this felt like listening to a bizarro version of my language. It was cool at first, but I was so fucking done with it by the fifth song and then it just kept going and going. I assume that understanding the lyrics would make this better, but then again, I barely pay attention to lyrics anyways.

This started promisingly; I’m all for snappy Latin rhythms and airy acoustic guitars that transport me to a sunny South American village. But I felt like as the album went on those Brazilian vibes got watered down and replaced with a more generic brand of smooth jazz/funk which is less appealing to me. 2.5

Boring 70's soft rock en Español. I don't get it. It's fine. I didn't want to Van Gogh my ears or anything but surely there are better albums that didn't make this list.

Vento De Maio is only another 2/5 effort but it's quite a bit more interesting than some of the non-English albums we've had, or Brasilian albums, like Sai Dessa is really fun. Plenty of misses, but some decent stuff in there, she has a cool voice.

Don't really know much about this style of music (the softer, vocalist end of Brazilian jazz), but I can't really see that this album is anything special. It seems to be a compilation of miscellaneous tracks released after she died. I imagine it sold well, and that's the only reason it ended up here. It sounds alright. I would be open to hearing a proper album of hers. 2.5* for this one though.

Hard to feel the music when you can't understand the words.

p400, 1978. 2 stars. Not my thing, but pleasant enough of its type. Nice voice, nothing exceptional though, and a lot of the arrangements are very 70s and haven't aged well. This album needs a warm sunny day to bring the best out of it, and we tend not to get them in Stoke. Not sure why this is on the list, definitely not essential.

The instrumentals were great, but I wasn't so much of a fan of her vocals.

I thought I had never heard of this, even after listening to a couple of songs. However, later I realised Elis Regina performed the world famous duet Aguas de Marco with Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is the opener of the album Elis & Tom from 1974, which is so much better than this compilation. Very strange to include it in the list.

Brazilian music is never unwelcome. A good thing, because I had to go looking for this one a little bit. I ended up settling on the Hemisphere release, which at least on Discogs is categorized as a European reissue of "Elis" from 1980. In any case, it displays a variety of styles by Elis, as one might expect from a compilation. That's nice, but the instrumentals tend to be pretty uninteresting: The percussion choices were especially flat for Brazilian music. O Medo De Amar... was a standout, and Aprendendo Jogar captures the spirit of play well and, I imagine, makes a good opener to the Brazilian release (with a different tracklist). Other than that I'd like to hear her voice on a more cohesive set of tracks.

Otro disco de música jazz y brasileña. No conocía a esta cantante, aunque seguro que la he escuchado sin saber quien era. Con una carrera tan corta (murió con 36 años) es lógico que no sea conocida para el público en general. Suena muy bien en general y "Tiro Ao Álvaro" es pura música tropical. "Saudade eterna" también me ha gustado. Para mi gusto ha sido interesante pero no es un disco al que vaya a volver.

Vento de Maio ist das einzige Album, das die Brasilianerin Elis Regina unter Vertrag bei EMI aufnahm – 1978, mitten in ihrer produktivsten Phase. Wo genau die Aufnahmen entstanden, konnte ich nicht sauber belegen; ich verzichte lieber auf einen Studionamen, als einen zu erfinden. Klar ist der Rahmen: MPB, aber mit deutlich mehr Fusion-Politur als auf Reginas früheren Platten. Das Songmaterial ist breit gestreut. Milton Nascimento singt bei „O Que Foi Feito Devera" mit, Gilberto Gils „Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus" bekommt hier eine der eindringlicheren Interpretationen. Der Titeltrack trägt das Album fast allein. Die Arrangements sind orchestral, manchmal auch etwas zu glatt für meinen Geschmack – näher an Fusion-Balladen als an der rauen MPB ihrer Siebziger-Jahre-Alben. Was mich trotzdem überzeugt: Regina singt, als würde sie der Produktion gar nicht auflaufen wollen. Kein Showeffekt, keine Übertreibung – nur eine Stimme, die genau weiß, wann sie zurücknehmen muss. Dick produziert, aber nie von Regina übertönt.

I'm failing this on the principle that it's a compilation album lazily chosen to check off a diversity box. Come on, Robert. Do better. After all, if greatest hits albums were list legal, then a lot of time and pain could be saved by having one Rolling Stones entry on here (among the many other charting artists who seemingly can't turn out a decent studio album in full).

Honestly, I'd rather leave it given I was told the reason we don't have many blues icons (but seem to have every single album ever released by a British guy who ever played the blues) is because the list "doesn't do compilations" but this is a compilation. I don't have any problem with saying there's music outside of the English speaking world...but we've mostly gotten US/UK music and the World music selections have been mostly from sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil. This album is terrible. Even for Brazilian music, this is awful. The incorporation of other styles of music with more traditional Brazilian forms (read: bossa nova) feels forced. Rebento is very different and the best song on the album. It's like Brazilian lady Michael McDonald. Or kmaybe the Brazilian lady Rupert Holmes? Even if she does sound like cheesy 80s pop on the back half of the album, it is vastly superior to the first half. She's got kind of a Carly Simon vibe too.

I gave this album three listens hoping I would fall under its sway, but it never happened. Bossa nova, samba and other Brazilian styles have yet to click with me. It has no bite, boogie or oddball features to hold my attention. A few acoustic guitar records have made my list of records to own. This one was dull to my ears. I suppose a subtle romantic tide is supposed to wash over me, but I came away with little. The record also has late 1970s jazz fusion sounds. The methods of recording, and effects musicians used at the time border on Muzak. They have a brittle artificial sound that hits my high register in an annoying fashion. While countless reviews tout the skills of these players, both American and Brazilian, I cannot get into the instrumental passages. Regina did not bother me as much as the music, however she could not transcend it either. I will await further Brazilian style records on the list, and hope for the better.

Not for me, didn't like any of it

Breezy pool-side jams for a muggy afternoon. Smooth jazz, rubbery bass, super 80s production, samba rhythms, some more uptempo funk, loads of that floaty dreamy unresolved Brasilian Portugese melodic phrasing that always seems flat or like it doesn't have enough notes. I don't know why that style bothers so much, but I find the vocals incredibly grating.

It was nothing special, just very average easy listening that my dad would have liked.

Not quite punchy or fun enough to catch my ear. I grew bored after 6 songs. It never really got going, whilst the first song was catchy it didn't sustain my interest at all.

The first bossanova record I got that was not a Giberto. I can now officially say I'm not a fan.

Bit odd that an album with little information, hard to track down and a compilation is on this list. Be that as it may I dutifully listened to what I could from a variety of streaming sources but that big effort was a sheer waste of time. I didn't give it to close of a listen, but could not get into the slow saxophone. Maybe there is a better album to listen to, but generally a little too slow jazz for my preference.

Een wat rare entry dit. Een soort compilatie-album, samengesteld ver na haar dood. Gelukkig wel gewoon te vinden op Spotify inmiddels. Ik ben geen fan van dit soort Braziliaanse Joni Mitchells. Ze is overleden aan een combinatie van coke, drank en kalmeringsmiddelen dus ze is wel een legend. Maargoed. Huiswerkopdracht. Bij track 5 ben ik er al meer dan klaar mee en dan moet ik er nog 8. Het Joni Mitchellesque zit recht in m'n allergie. Het heeft niet het écht irritante van een Astrud, dat moet ik haar nageven, maar toch kan ik niet anders dan een 1 uitdelen. Ik wil dit niet.

I don't like this music at all. I know it's sad she died young and everything. I just can't connect with the style of music or the dated Portuguese pop.

I really want to give this a chance. I've bitched plenty that this list is clearly the work of UK and US critics elevating British and American bands at the expense of so many acts from around the world. I also get that this woman was a really big deal in Brazil. But damn... it's just some obnoxious synthy, disco-era sounding, smooth jazz, pop.

Eli’s had a beautiful voice. Not being bi-lingual was a definite block in understanding lyrics. With that being said I feel unqualified to give this album a fair rating. The music was pleasant playing in the background. Will mention it was difficult to find the album.
