Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Pleasant enough.

Was not hooked at all right away so I kept it on while I worked. While beautiful sounding and performed by clearly talented musicians I can't say it's music I would listen to regularly. I'm glad to know this beautiful music exists in the world though

Meh. While not bad, I didn't need to hear this.

All over the place.

Overall, meh. I didn't really care for nor dislike this. I quite liked O Trem Azul. The more upbeat songs reminded me of The Sims (cos I don't understand a word) and the rest merely exists.

Not terrible but not something I’d ever listen to again. Kinda sounds like a soundtrack to one of those cheesy Netflix romcoms.

Realmente esperaba un disco de bossa y no este engendro pop. Tiene todo lo coñazo de la bossa y nada de su belleza delicada.

It was fine

Not bad, but not particularly interesting. I understand that it’s important in context, but it’s just kinda background-music-boring to me.

This rating is as much for the obscurity of this album as it is for the music. With several other albums by this artist, why choose the one that is missing from Apple Music and Wikipedia? I can’t even be sure I listened to what I was supposed to. Her singing was good, but the music was a little too easy disco.

- vacay vibes - good but would not listen on a regular basis

Reminds me of soundtrack music you'd hear in Austin Powers, which I guess means it feels very bossa nova?

I don’t know what to classify this as other than Latin? It was ok. It some unexpected funk and groove that I liked, but didn’t stick out for any particular reason.

I honestly don't know why this obscure album - that even its artist's Wikipedia article fails to mention - should be deemed "required listening". Not my thing anyways, it felt like being stuck in an old-timey lift for almost the entire runtime.

Spanish, Latin smooth a bit cheesy.

Non English speaking albums have a ceiling, particularly ones where the lyrics feel like an important part of the experience like it does here. However I didn’t find myself tuning out completely, there was something compelling about the music and the singer’s voice that kept my interest, I wish I knew what she was saying. 2.5

Completely unknown. An OK album.

Album #11 Elis Regina: Vento De Maio I am not very familiar with music in languages other than English, and Portuguese music wouldn’t necessarily be the first language that I would think to explore musically. And it seems that even if I were familiar with the scene and Elis Regina herself, even then this album wouldn’t be the first one that I would check out. It seems there was an error in including this album, since it is actually a compilation album from 1998, not a regular album from 1978, as the book says. However, when it comes to the music, I was actually pleasantly surprised. It feels like entering a Brazilian dive bar on vacation and not understanding what anyone is saying. A sense of exploration; I find that most of the charm in listening to lyrics in other languages is that emotion becomes incredibly more relevant than substance. It doesn’t matter what they are saying, only how it makes you feel. There is almost a dreamlike essence to some of these songs for me, like I just can’t quite make out what they are saying. Her voice is very expressive at times, and you can really tell she is putting a lot of heart into the music. It’s harder for me to discern individual songs, but the only one I didn’t really like was the closing track since it had some weirder sounds in it. Gonna be hard to find playlists to incorporate some of these songs into, but wouldn’t be surprised if I return to a few tracks. Best Songs: Tiro Ao Alvaro, Saudade Eterna, Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus Worst Song: Aprendendo A Jogar Score out of 10: 5.5

Compilations don't belong in this project. unfortunately it's a 2. The lowest rating I can give while avoiding seeing it on my summary page.

Even though I had no idea what they were saying, it was pretty funky and sounded nice. Won’t listen to it again though.

Tepid. I cannot understand why an album as ordinary as this has made the list. No vibrancy, no energy. Nothing unusual or striking about it. I can think of ten artists more worthy of people's time than this one - off the top of my head, Eric Dolphy, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Marc Ribot, Carolyn Franklin, Betty Harris, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny, Link Wray. A dull choice

Did not love it. A bit show-tuney, would like some history on why it's on the list.

nice background music

Couldn’t find it on Tidal so I listened to it on YouTube which is not ideal. The music was pretty good but not understanding the lyrics is a bummer to me. 2.5

I'm sure it's great, I just can't seem to get into Latin Jazz.

It was ok but not really my thing and I did find myself losing interest

Can't really rate

Not really for me but not terrible

I applaud what sometimes seem to be almost half-hearted attempts to include a diversity of musical styles and eras, but why THIS particular album? Nothing specifically wrong here. She's got a nice voice and a lot of energy. Apparently, she was huge in Brazil back in the day. Maybe you could sort of, almost, kind of make the case that she was a precursor to a performer like Madonna, though that feels like a big stretch based almost solely on gender. You'll definitely hear albums from this list that are far less pleasant to listen to, but probably few that are more forgettable. I'm pretty sure I will have forgotten all of these songs by the end of the week . . . and today is already Friday!

Not bad for a one time listen.

3/10… bossa nova / brasilian jazzy

Not sure why this one is on the list. It's elevator music

интересно но невыносимо

Yeah, this was just ok. This was apparently a mishmash of two albums, after researching this album on the 1001. Top tracks: "Vento De Maio," "O Que Foi Deito (De Vera)"

Fine. Kings boring.

Pleasant voice I guess

I went into this having never heard of Elis Regina, as it seems to be for many of the people doing this listening experiment. I can see how she was an important figure for Brazilian jazz and music. It seems that the most popular songs on the album were more influenced by folk and traditional Brazilian music. These were good, but the songs that connected most with me were the funk/disco songs. Her band was phenomenal. Right now I'm between a 2 and a 3 for the album. I wish I could do a half star. I'm thinking that 3 will be the marker of would I listen to this again. Right now, I wouldnt listen to the album again, but certain tracks I would definitely listen to again.

Neat but got boring over time.

Decent enough background music. No idea if I listened to the right album to be honest, but I got the idea.

Kinda fine to have on as background music, but I don't think I would ever put this on as it didn't do much for me

Largely just not my thing. Too smooth-jazzy. Her voice is quite pleasant though so I was only bored, not irritated. Would have been a straight 2 but the very last song, Aprendendo A Jogar, was much more peppy and it's going on the project playlist, so I'd give it a 2.5 if I could.

I've never listened to this album (17). A bit forgettable, not really my style.

Second half of the album was good but I don't think I'd listen again. Once was enough

I have a hard time giving more than 3 stars to music I can’t understand any of the lyrics to. I liked the fun genre mixing, but probably not something I would revisit.

jiggy jiggy jiggy jiggy jiggy jaka

Just like the one before this - I’m sure there’s a market for this, I just ain’t it.

#686. I honestly didn't even give this a fair shake. I skimmed through it a bit, but it's really not for me. So if you planned on calling me biased an stupid, know this: you're right and I don't care. 2/5: meh

Not my thing

Gear: Dunu SA6 Artwork: 🎤👩‍🎤🔦 Production: 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🌬️🌸🇧🇷 Rating: 🍹🍹(🍹)/5

This one didn't appeal to me, jazzy lounge-y music. Rating: 2

Her stuff was okay. The album was hard to find, and it wasn’t even one of her best albums. Not sure how some stuff makes this list.

Brazilian lounge music. Meh

Not for me. 3/10

Props for being the first truly international album I've received up until now (which seems to be something of a rarity in the 1001 list). However, despite enjoying bits and pieces of this to a certain extent, it is miles away from being something I'd ever revisit, and at 48 minutes is a big ask to get through. A "música popular brasileira" album, which essentially expands upon the samba-canção and bossa nova genres by adding in funk and soul elements (you knew that already, right?), there is a surprising amount of diversity and complexity between tracks on this album. Some lean much more into jazz than others, however I found the transitions between stylings a bit jarring at times, mainly towards the album's mid section before it settles into a funk/soul template towards its tail end. The vocals here are lovely and I presume express some profound lyrics, however the language barrier meant I wasn't able to form a connection with them. Two stars is perhaps a bit harsh - it's really not that bad, just not for me.

I don't like jazz. I like Brazilian jazz more than some other jazz, but I still don't like jazz.

Highs: O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livré,Aprendendo A Jogar The album is interesting for sure, the language barrier is a bit difficult to overcome especially when it comes to the slower songs.

7/21/25. Started off interesting and then a little all over the place. Songs were decent, just wish it was more consistent.

Assuming this is the 1979 album it’s not on Spotify and hard to track down. Not for me this. Very chilled and laid back and she has quite the voice, but it’s all a bit cheesy and all over the place.

This album honestly did not have much to recommend it for me. I was interested at first but overall I felt like it lacked variety and was too long. She is a gifted singer but maybe this is more of a singles artist.

Better than the other bossa nova one but alternated between catchy, boring and annoying. The last track was all three.

I always enjoy variety in this list when it arises and i'm also a fan of music where i dont speak the language as it allows me to appreciate the music the the emotion more. But to my ear this didnt sound special. Jazzy bossa nova with ok singing, some patchy tunes and not much else. Maybe im not deep enough into this genre to appreciate its difference but it sounded very bland to me

Funny to get two early 00s bossanova records in a couple of days. What I’ve learned is that I think I like bossanova but I really don’t like the early 00s. This has some great performances on it but also it sounds like Brazilian Steely Dan or something.

Background music, nothing special

This is a style of music that's almost custom made to get on my nerves. This is clearly a problem on my end - there's no issues with the talent or performance, but I hated basically every second.

2 sterne

Not my thing. Although some nice bits.

Liked it, no idea what she was singing about but it felt joyous and optimistic. Had it on in the background while I worked. It had a way of making even non-Portuguese speakers like myself feel the emotional tone of the songs. Felt bright, flowing, and optimistic song, both musically and lyrically

not really my cup of tea

this album has two modes: annoy you into hitting the next button or whipping loads of ass

For this I listen to this album list. New music for me. I have to say there are some nice songs in there. Still, it's not really my thing.

This one was hard to find on spotify, I had to find one of the songs and click to view its album, because the album itself refused to show up directly in my search. The songs kind of remind me of music you might here in the credits of a movie (except Portuguese). The genre is supposed to be Samba, but I don't know how danceable most of the songs are.

coii uh isn’t find album so i listened to another elis - love brazilian music and

Not my vibe, unfortunately. Would be fun for background music at an outdoor bistro, though.

Meh. Not my style

Spanish, woman solo (jazzy)

2- Stars (4/15)

It all blended together.

I've come to the realization over the course of this project that i don't like Bossa Nova as much as I thought I did. I don't dislike it either, but this, like a few other examples we've had, is pleasant but kind of washes over me without getting me overly interested. A high two.

These ones are always hard for me. Does she have a great voice? Yes. Did it sound groovy and jazzy? Absolutely. Did I have any idea what was going on and therefore lacked context to entirely enjoy it? Yes.

Didn't enjoy this album but did listen to it.

The music from this region just doesn't appeal to me. I like to listen to tango or Argentinian tango and the electronic versions of it. There are also jazz variations from South America that I like. But this music is too folkloristic for me and doesn't suit my taste. 2/5

Pretty sure I listened to this months ago and forgot to rate it. Which is annoying because it really wasn't a great listen.

I think I’m at a disadvantage because (a) i don’t understand Portuguese and (b) this particular album was only available on YouTube, which sucks as a portal. But, while it sounds original and well-produced and the vocals are great, this is basically just a pop-album that seems to have led down the dark path to smooth latin jazz. Not something I really needed to hear in any language. It’s a 2.

A mixture of Latin rhythms and MOR. Not really my thing

- When I lived in Korea, older people would constantly be listening to heavily dated, seemingly (to my ears) indistinguishable music that was a mixture of easy listening, crooner ballads, and disco, always in their native tongue. No disrespect, but it actually seems like many countries have something similar...this is just Brazil's version. - Liked a track or two which felt like they may have had a more Latin flair? - My experience was definitely hindered by having to listen to this on the increasingly dumb YouTube app filled with ads.

Good background music. Need to read why this one made it.

Boring

At its best when it's breezy and tropical sounding - track 4 was especially good. I liked the opener as well. Didn't connect with the duets as much. Overall this isn't unpleasant stuff but not one I plan on coming back to.

Originally released in 1980, 2 years before her death, as "Elis". Not sure why it's in this list as it's nothing special. For fans of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music.

Not really for me although it did pick up a bit towards the end. Favourite tracks: O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre & Aprendendo A Jogar. Probably won't revisit. 2/5

Good album even if it’s not something I’d normally pick

Not in English. One thumb down. Might’ve gotten two down if it was in English.

Der Klang von Portugiesisch ist wahscheinlich ähnlich schwer auszuhalten wie der Klang von Deutsch. 2 Punkte für den musikalischen Effort.

It was ok.. I even gave it a second listen thinking it was mood the first time but still feel the same way.

I guess this was a good version of this music. It all seemed the same to me and I was bored by the end.

Not for me. It might be good, but I didn't care at any point during listening to it.

First listen. Ok.

I never know how to evaluate the music of cultures different from my own. If I were Brazilian, would I love this album? Am I missing an important piece because I don't understand Portuguese? Should I be ashamed that the music doesn't make me want to learn traditional Brazilian dance? Am I a racist, xenophobic, closed-minded piece of shit if I don't like it? Anyway... odds are strongly against my ever listening to this again, but I'll feel bad about myself if I don't give it a couple of stars. Let's say that the second star is because Elis Regina died from a cocaine, vermouth(!), and tranquilizer overdose. Rest In Party, queen.

Reveal thoughts: wtf? It’s terrible. It’s live, and the singer is slightly out of tune in a lot of places. I don’t like it, it’s over an hour, and it’s the day after Christmas. I’m not going to make it all the way through this one.

I don't mind listening to music in another language when the instrumentation is really interesting, but this was a vocal dominated album. She seems like a great singer and it sounded like there were some diverse influences on the music (bossa nova, jazz, rock etc), but this was more inoffensive than enjoyable. Also as other people have pointed out, there may have been a mixup when putting the book together since this is a posthumous compilation album with little to no information about it available online.

Note that this album was not available on Apple Music. Dull, light jazzy kind of filler music for me. The language barrier didn’t help either. Probably a very talented singer but without an emotional connection, I won’t be listening to this again.

Halfway through the album I realized it's from 1998 and not 1978 or something. I enjoyed the funky songs well enough. The vocals are very front and center I didn't particularly like them. It's hard for me to give a star rating foreign music so I'm just going to go with my gut.

some funky Latin American songs, not really for me

First of all, I have never liked singing in Portuguese that much, and secondly, this is overly smooth and boring. 2 stars

I guess this is actually a compilation and it's pretty obvious since it starts of as fairly standard MBP and turns into this smooth jazz thing by the end. 2 stars

No tää oli tällanen mun korviin peruskauralta kuulostava plätty

Amazon only had the single of this, not the album by the same name. My rating is for the single only.

She’s so…lively. Really giving it her all, and then some. (ntm.)

o.k. but not my jam. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah its ok. 2.33

not really for me

This has been my least favorite jazz album we've had on the list. I typically like jazz samba, but this one didn't really offer anything. The vocals being in another language doesn't help, but it doesn't really hurt either. The whole album just fell a little flat.

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

An album and artist i’ve never heard of before. It took me a while to find on Apple Music until I realized it’s not really a true album but a mixture of two and was then released in the early 80s and 1978. Her voice is great and weirdly reminded me a little bit of feist for some reason. The music was good, but it really didn’t really grab me. I don’t think it would be album that I’ve ever revisit again but nice to have exposure to music I normally would listen to.

Ok song.

Not baf but not for me

Kind of interesting and chill, but also very late 70s.

Can see how it's good but not for me. 51/100

For those wondering, it is now on Spotify so it is easier to find and listen to. Was expecting something more upbeat and carnival style but it kind of morphed into cheesy smooth jazz which isn't my thing. Was kind of disappointed with this one.

Nice voice, didn't hit me much... foreign language, old style format.

It's okay.

Hmm, it worked not for me

I didn’t spend a ton of time with this one. A few tracks I dug, but overall not sure why this is a must listen

Perhaps it’s my ignorance or laziness to not learn more about this…but yeah, it was fine. Interesting listen. Nice voice but to be honest I didn’t understand a word of it 😂

I read about her a bit, and she sounds...a lot more interesting than the music she makes. This was perfectly acceptable Saturday morning fare, but just a bit on the dull and repetitive side to warrant further listening.

I listened to the whole album, but it was a near thing.

Felt like I might enjoy if I understood the lyrics.

Vento de Maio Despite the furore, tumult and uproar about the nature of this being a compilation I listened to it as is - it’s on the list, it’s getting listened to and getting ticked off. She has a nice voice. The music is fine, but quite cheesy on occasion. Not keen on the bass. I liked So Deus E Quem Sabe, but I didn’t notice anything else, it all just went by quite forgettably. It’s not unlistenably bad, but it’s so middle of the road and lightweight it’s almost as if it doesn’t really exist. Without her voice it might disappear entirely. I really can’t think of anything else to say. Still better than Christina Aguilera ⭐️⭐️

The overall vibes of this whole album was just artsy people who are also hipsters and use special homemade soap. It was overall alright having this in the background but a bit meh. The one song that was decent was O Trem Azul but the whole thing was also in Portuguese, so it's just meh.

Bossa Nova ? Not my style

Loses a star from me due to Portuguese being quite hearing to listen to

If I owned this, I would not know where to file it. It’s not jazz, despite it’s nods to bossa nova. It’s just a bit too mainstream for me, but it’s not offensive. I didn’t mind it but I’d never listen to it again.

This feels like Dimery wanted to include some more music from Brazil, so he looked up a list of "famous Brazilian singers", and picked one, and chose their only album on a major label. But the links on the website seem to go to a 90s compilation, and it was hard to track down the right record because she released six different albums under the title 'Elis'. But I did not find this album particularly compelling or even enjoyable. She has a great voice, full of character, but the backing tracks were over-produced and charmless. In searching for the correct album, I stumbled through some of her earlier material, which was more simply and warmly recorded, which gave a much more sympathetic staging for her vocals, and was more enjoyable to my ears. But it was pretty generic 60s/70s Brazilian pop, and I'm still not why this is on a "Must Hear" list. I didn't feel like I gained much from listening to this record.

Onneksi vähän menevämpää kuin bossanova muttei liian viekkaan jammaavaa jazzia. Elis Reginalla on miellyttävä ääni. Portugalin kielestä aina tähti, laulettuna viihdyttävää. Biisit (melodiat) itsessään aika lailla mattoa.

Reviewed 1980 Album Ellis, which as best as I can tell is what this album is referring to.

It’s flavourful, but not of a flavour profile that I crave.

Easy chill

Not for me, I usually like world music, but wasn't feeling this one.

First song was fun What followed...not so much

yeah go cinco de mayo

Samba, bossa nova tranquila. No me gusta este tipo de música, lo siento.

Sort of easy listening, lounge type songs. Not bad, but not my preferred flavor of Brazilian music. 2.9

Wasn’t familiar with Elis Regina before. While not crazy about much of this album, appreciate the opportunity to learn about her life and career. Digger the funkier stuff here, like the last track. From what I’ve read, this is a curious choice for the book. It seems to be a hastily thrown together compilation. Another questionable choice by the editor here. I mean, it’s fine but doesn’t seem like the best choice for this artist.

I wanted to like this, but it felt too commercial and calculated for my taste.

Elis Regina has a beautiful voice, and will be my go to when I need to hear some Brazilian Bossa Nova. But I’m not sure when I’ll ever get that feeling to hear it again.

Twas good, but honestly didn't really wow me. Looking at her list of albums, it seems like she just pumps out huge amounts of content. At that volume, I imagine it's hard to really keep the quality up.

Samba, bossa nova tranquila. No me gusta este tipo de música, lo siento.

Not for me

Overall, I can see the appeal but I don't think it appeals to me. It is a light, airy, live sounding (is underproduced a word?) vibe that I could see having as quiet background music but I'll probably never choose it. Worth noting the 2nd half of the album was better. Track by track: 1 - Feels like an intro. The vocals and light accompaniment gives me a musical vibe. 2 - That was OK. 3 - Another track that has a live sounding, light sound. It's fine but so far it isn't grabbing me. 4 - Maybe I'm just not in the mood. This is putting me to sleep. 5 - I didn't really like it. 6 - More of the same 7 - Picked up the tempo but I still am not intrigued. 8 - More of the same 9 - This is a little different. Some nice "lounge piano" to kick us off. Has this been lounge music the whole time? 10 - Don't get me wrong, the vocals are impressive. This may be my favorite track so far. 11 - We are a little funky here. I've liked the last couple tracks more than the first nine. 12 - The vocals continue to be fantastic but the music as a whole just isn't in a super listenable for me. 13 - An OK track. Not really my thing.

One of the joys of doing this is finding shit like this. But only when it's good, something that I can't say regarding this selection.

Last few tunes were funky and enjoyable. High 2 but could grow

Regina has a great voice and all. And I do love Brazilian Portuguese. I don't understand a lick of it, mind you, but it sure is fun to listen to. But... man, this did nothing for me. Soft, samba/bossa nova jazz is just SO boring. It never goes anywhere, never makes any bold moves, never asks you to sit up and pay attention. It's background music and there's no reason I needed to hear this before I unsubscribe from life.

It’s emotional and have positive energy. Still not my thing.

An okay album, not my preference, but easy to listen to otherwise.

Beautiful voice and orchestration is nice, but I am just not sure that this era of Brazilian pop jazz is resonating with me that much.

I don’t speak Spanish. A couple had good vibes

Ik heb precies wel al wat beter in dit genre gehoord

Not for me.

Like her voice, hate the music.

Decent songs but not something I’ll revisit

Not worth of your time.

Couldn’t find this album in my stream service. Just listened to the title song

The music islet was rather good, but I didn't really care for the singing--and not because I couldn't understand it, she just wasn't a great singer. Three fact it was in Portuguese didn't really help. Probably would've been another rank higher if it was instrumental. 2.5/5

Hilariously cheesy, when not simply almost shockingly awful. To be clear it's not the non-English aspect of the vocals (which I've loved from e.g. Milton Nascimento). This is falling on its own (de)merits. However in good conscience I can't give it a 1 to lie with the drek of Fatboy Slims, Lou Reeds, and Limp Bizkits since there's obviously talent here but I'll hopefully never listen again. 3/10 2 stars

Not doing it for me. Wonder if I would like it more if I understood Portuguese.

Not really my jam.

This was my first time listening to Elis Regina, and this album was okay. I'm not very knowledgeable about jazz music, so I always have a hard time assessing albums like this. Elis's voice was nice, and there were some arrangements on some of the songs that were good, but this wasn't really my cup of my tea.

The music is fine; however, this is a compilation reissue rather than an actual album, so the sequencing BLOWS and the production of each album clashes.

Dull dull dull

Was a 1 star until the last 4 songs really picked it up and saved the album. Nothing super special about it.

Album 194 of 1001 Elis Regina - Vento De Maio Rating : 2 / 5 Beautiful sound. Language barrier with the lyrics. Nothing I'll come back to.

me gusta

A bit jazzy for me

Couldn’t find this one, so listened to a couple of her other albums. Very niche this one, so be prepared. Unless Bossa Nova Samaba Jazz is your bag, then it might not do too much for you.

Nee, dat zegt me niet zoveel

Lekker zomers, lekkere 80's sound, lekker Braziliaans swingend. Maar ook lekker niet mijn ding.

Largely passed me by. Relatively decent background music, but offered me nout.

Вроде бы 1997 год, а музыка так устарела, такое чувство, что альбом был записан в шестидесятые. Сначала музыка просто меня не цепляла, а потом еще и стала меня раздражать.

The vision of the album is clear and well executed. The genre just seems limited.

2/5. Interesting listen as all of the lyrics are in Spanish. The instrumentation was rather good, but simply because it’s not something I would pick up and listen to; I assigned it the appropriate rating.

Fine whatever init forun

Samba, bossa nova tranquila. No me gusta este tipo de música, lo siento.

Day 101 Here's a really strange one! Despite Elisis Regina being a very popular Brazilian singer, there is close to none information about Vento de Maio: it seems to be a posthumous compilation, and it is not even clear when it was released; some sources state 1978, some others 1980. To add weirdness to the confusion, Ms Regina passed away from an overdose in her mid 30s in 1982; she hadn't retired, quite the opposite, she was at the peak of her career, so how does this count as posthumous? Anyways, posthumous or not, what strikes me is the choice of a compilation, and a minor one that doesn't even cover the entirety of her extensive career. In 1978 Regina released a proper album titled Transversal do Tempo which bears a very similar cover photo. My guess is that the book's writers fucked this one up entirely, which is really, but really sad, as it comes across as a failed attempt at compensating for the Anglo Saxon hegemony in popular music, a failure that does nothing but confirm said hegemony. All this, plus the fact that the record lacks in cohesion, distracted me from experiencing Regina's astonishing singing abilities. Also the production is problematic at points, sounding as if she was backed by an average fusion band, a common issue (or one I am familiar with) in recordings from both Brazil and Argentina at the time. I wasn't happy with what I heard but I suspected that there was a lot of potential, so I went with one of the Apple Music picks, Falso Brilhante. Now that's much more like it. There are a couple of bluesy numbers, a couple of more jazz-rock oriented that sound much better than those on the the other record, two Argentinean folk songs (both countries were very close in terms of musical exploration at the time), some mighty prog, and one traditional song, Fascinação, that I am sure heard by someone else but couldn't tell who. But most importantly, this is all Brazilian music at its best. Long story short, if you are a music fan, don't just settle on the records featured on this book, especially when it comes from world artists, but  be curious and do explore further, you might find some quite hidden gems. Rating: Book pick: 1 Apple Music pick: 10

Oh dear, I really don't enjoy this at all. I can tell she's good at what she does, but South American music leaves me cold - despite the rythyms, I find it dull and uninteresting. Sorry.

its perfectly ok. im sure its something profound or influential in the world of brazilian music and samba in general. i think my brazilian friends will enjoy this far more than i did. fav song: suadade eterna

Just not me bag hombre

Didn't really connect with this one

Cuando era solo un niño pequeño, le pregunté a mi madre qué seré. Seré feliz, seré rico. Esto es lo que ella me dijo. Que Sera, Sera. Lo que sea sera.

I've gotten a handful of hidden gems from this list and I thought this was going to be another one, but for whatever reason this just fell flat for me. I really can't explain why but every song just felt a bit off. I really liked the suggested songs that played after this so there must be something to it, but I couldn't find it. 2.5 stars

Maybe one day

Perfectly adequate easy listening, a few funky dance numbers, nothing you’ll remember in the morning.

No bueno

How can this be so hard to identify and find? I think I found the right album to listen to… It’s fine. Old Portuguese music. 2.5 Favorite track: Trio Ao Alvaro.

Not usually the type of music I'd listen to, but not totally out of my league. Apredendo a jogar stood out.

Very interesting story about life and career of Elis Regina, about whom I have never heard before. The problem is that her music is not really up my alley, and I had immensely hard time trying to sit through not even the whole album, but even any song from it. Great voice, very confident style, but I will be staying away from this music in foreseeable future.

I actually really like her more "traditional" stuff. But this collection of songs I didn't really get into.

solid music... not quite my style tho

enjoyed the intro song...got my hopes up...not for me in the end.

Pleasant enough voice but not my kind of music. At the moment at least.

Passionate but a touch too tacky. 2.2

Nice in the background

The first album (I've seen) on here not to have its own Wikipedia page or any reference to it on her bio page. Maybe the secret nature of the album is how it made the list! It's a rather bland slice of the Seventies but at least it's a secret bland slice.

this album does not exist, and perhaps it shouldn't have

Some cool grooves but mainly elevator music for me

Not my scene.

It sound very Brazilian, nice but not really original

A samba album with nothing much memorable to say - the melodies and vocals were good, but nothing to make this album notable or 1001-worthy.

Kinda bossa-nova-ish stuff, with some funky moments

Niet voor mijn smaak.

This one just didn't do anything at all for me. It's not bad, in any regard.

Fairly anonymous light funk/jazz, but in Portuguese. Meh

Even without the language barrier, this isn't for me.

Enjoyed the rhythms and melodies but again, could not enjoy the meaning of the songs because I don’t speak the language.

People who say that Portuguese sounds Slavic were right. I'm Slavic myself, and this felt like listening to a bizarro version of my language. It was cool at first, but I was so fucking done with it by the fifth song and then it just kept going and going. I assume that understanding the lyrics would make this better, but then again, I barely pay attention to lyrics anyways.

90s production on "World music" is bad si clean.

It was ok. I liked the first few tracks and then I got a bit bored

Ehh it was interesting?

This started promisingly; I’m all for snappy Latin rhythms and airy acoustic guitars that transport me to a sunny South American village. But I felt like as the album went on those Brazilian vibes got watered down and replaced with a more generic brand of smooth jazz/funk which is less appealing to me. 2.5

Not my thing

Boring 70's soft rock en Español. I don't get it. It's fine. I didn't want to Van Gogh my ears or anything but surely there are better albums that didn't make this list.

Vento De Maio is only another 2/5 effort but it's quite a bit more interesting than some of the non-English albums we've had, or Brasilian albums, like Sai Dessa is really fun. Plenty of misses, but some decent stuff in there, she has a cool voice.

Don't really know much about this style of music (the softer, vocalist end of Brazilian jazz), but I can't really see that this album is anything special. It seems to be a compilation of miscellaneous tracks released after she died. I imagine it sold well, and that's the only reason it ended up here. It sounds alright. I would be open to hearing a proper album of hers. 2.5* for this one though.

This was quite meh. None of the songs stood out, and I simply tuned it out as background music. She did have a lovely voice though.

Good variety of songs. Her vocal tone reminds me a lot of Carly Simon

Hard to feel the music when you can't understand the words.

p400, 1978. 2 stars. Not my thing, but pleasant enough of its type. Nice voice, nothing exceptional though, and a lot of the arrangements are very 70s and haven't aged well. This album needs a warm sunny day to bring the best out of it, and we tend not to get them in Stoke. Not sure why this is on the list, definitely not essential.

The instrumentals were great, but I wasn't so much of a fan of her vocals.

It's okay but not my cup of tea.

Pleasant enough but wouldn't listen again

Some interesting sounds

Nice bit of Bossa-Nova I like her voice and there are some nice tunes but I am not sure this is as good as say Gilberto Rey's classics.

Nice, I would need to hear more of it to appreciate it, I think. 2/5

It's alright. With a language barrier I don't think I judge it fairly though.

I've never heard of this album nor Elis Regina before. I enjoyed it as background music but can't really see myself revisiting it though. Nice to get an artist and album I have never heard of.

It really isn't for me. I'm sure some people loved it, but will avoid giving it my first 1 star too.

Vento de maio Supa smoovo jazzo Estrela cadente Vergin on fromage O fim da viagem Funkita basso e sinthesizo Pra voltar atrás Nota so mucha for meo

I thought I had never heard of this, even after listening to a couple of songs. However, later I realised Elis Regina performed the world famous duet Aguas de Marco with Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is the opener of the album Elis & Tom from 1974, which is so much better than this compilation. Very strange to include it in the list.

No. Listworthy = 👎

Brazilian music is never unwelcome. A good thing, because I had to go looking for this one a little bit. I ended up settling on the Hemisphere release, which at least on Discogs is categorized as a European reissue of "Elis" from 1980. In any case, it displays a variety of styles by Elis, as one might expect from a compilation. That's nice, but the instrumentals tend to be pretty uninteresting: The percussion choices were especially flat for Brazilian music. O Medo De Amar... was a standout, and Aprendendo Jogar captures the spirit of play well and, I imagine, makes a good opener to the Brazilian release (with a different tracklist). Other than that I'd like to hear her voice on a more cohesive set of tracks.

Not sure i listened to the correct album

Brazil!

Yeah aight

This was a first listen to an artist that I don’t know. Elis is talented, but the album wasn’t for me.

The Sims Buy Mode music

There are a few fun music bits here, but mostly this is pretty tedious. Perhaps it wouldn't feel that way if I knew the language, but I don't, so it does.

This album seems more expressive than other foreign language albums.

El albúm tiene dos canciones que me han parecido muy originales, vento de maio y o que foi feito devera, son las que me han llamado la atención, el resto se pueden escuchar pero poco más, no es album que vaya a a volver a escuchar.

Listened to the wrong album first, nothing that really stood out to me. Good vocals I guess and a song here or there that was kind of cool to listen to but not something I'd come back to.

Had some fun parts, mostly interested in the instrumentals

not much to write home about

bit loungey and dul

Only non apple itunes one so far. The music was interesting, but never felt i was enjoying the groove from it. Pretty much all the up tempo tracks ruin the vibe for me, and not much worth revisiting here.

Not our jam. Not bad, just...not for us.

Just not my style. Brazilian music. But she has a cool voice and some of the songs are full of energy. Others are a bit sad.

I think I liked it, but there wasn't anything that stood out

Didn't like it much, not what I'm looking for. It sounded pretty cool but I find it hard to listen to a full album of music I can't understand. 3/8, fav track NONE.

I liked a few songs. 2/5

Some Brazilian music. it was ok for what it was but not really for me

1978: Sai Dessa, Tiro Ao Álvaro

This sucks. This is going to be a long 48 minutes. What's with all the Brazilian music? I don't have any problem with saying there's music outside of the English speaking world...but we've mostly gotten US/UK music and the World music selections have been mostly from sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil. This album is terrible. Even for Brazilian music, this is awful. The incorporation of other styles of music with more traditional Brazilian forms (read: bossa nova) feels forced. Rebento is very different and the best song on the album. It's like Brazilian lady Michael McDonald. Or kmaybe the Brazilian lady Rupert Holmes? Even if she does sound like cheesy 80s pop on the back half of the album, it is vastly superior to the first half. She's got kind of a Carly Simon vibe too.

what the fuck

What is this shit

Boring.

I gave this album three listens hoping I would fall under its sway, but it never happened. Bossa nova, samba and other Brazilian styles have yet to click with me. It has no bite, boogie or oddball features to hold my attention. A few acoustic guitar records have made my list of records to own. This one was dull to my ears. I suppose a subtle romantic tide is supposed to wash over me, but I came away with little. The record also has late 1970s jazz fusion sounds. The methods of recording, and effects musicians used at the time border on Muzak. They have a brittle artificial sound that hits my high register in an annoying fashion. While countless reviews tout the skills of these players, both American and Brazilian, I cannot get into the instrumental passages. Regina did not bother me as much as the music, however she could not transcend it either. I will await further Brazilian style records on the list, and hope for the better.

Not for me, didn't like any of it

It was nothing special, just very average easy listening that my dad would have liked.

Not quite punchy or fun enough to catch my ear. I grew bored after 6 songs. It never really got going, whilst the first song was catchy it didn't sustain my interest at all.

The first bossanova record I got that was not a Giberto. I can now officially say I'm not a fan.

Not my type of music at all

Not really my taste, got bored

I thought this was nearly over, I checked and I was on track 5 of 13. Awful, tedious, bossa funk / jazz thing.

No thanks

This album was a complete miss for me... Not a real album but some compilation, not in English so I could not understand it, not the type of music I like. I am sure she was a wonderful musician, but not my thing.

Not for me.
