Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I understand the appeal of Elis, for the time and for Brazil, and I the production and quality of the music is such that I can understand why others outside of Brazil would also like it. However, I found it mostly boring and only one or two songs really stood out to me, in the moment. So, unfortunately, it's just not for me, though I definitely did not hate it or have any active dislike for it.
- Erster Gedanke: "Och nöö, bitte nichts portugiesisches..." 3,5/5
Some great, some too full on for me today. But maybe ok on another day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5/10 Ok. Thanks. 7-30-2024
Makes me feel all summery!
I would never put this on by myself, but if someone else did I'd not complain at all. Had no idea of this person or their sound
A little hard to engage with since this is primarily just singing and I didn’t know what she was singing about. It was pleasant, though.
3.5. Interesting to hear something different, in another language, nothing too spectacular though
imagine listening to yacht rock with a charismatic female vocalist who sings in portuguese. well, that’s exactly what you get with this one. and i am here for it. the songs are intoxicating and she is a very gifted singer. great album.
Seems like this isn't exactly the right album for Elis Regina that is in the 1,001 book. It's close and has all the right tracks (plus one extra) but in the wrong order. I guess Vento de Maio (officially a compilation) is easier to find on Apple Music or Spotify. I'm not sure the order matters that much given the constant style changes on this album and that it's not a concept album from what I can tell. I listened to both song orders and either way it was just okay. I found the most up-tempo songs like Sai Dessa or Saudade Eterna (aka Calcanhar de Aquiles) sounded a little corny, like the musicians were trying too hard. Except for maybe Aprendendo a Jogar - uptempo but cool beat/sound. Generally, I liked the songs that started softer and built up to a climax, particularly Rebento - used a Celine Dion kind of trick but with a Billy Joel sound to the piano. O Trem Azul was another. Honestly, I was reminded a bit of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen's stuff with the embellished jazzy sounds. Not quite as good. But decent.
Cool music from someone I had never heard of. Sad that she died so young
Really enjoyed this. Was not expecting this out of 1972.
Music was nice but man did the book mess up this entry.
This was decent, situational music. Not something I would ever reach for but in the right situation it’s above average for its style.
I can bossa my nova with the best of them and this one was an enjoyable listen. On the front end the sound seemed more traditional and immediately transported me to a dark sweaty club in 1960s Rio. But the second half of the album seemed to jump straight into smooth jazz sounds of the 70s and made me feel like I was listening to the Brazilian version of Soul Train. Not a bad thing when you have a voice such as hers…
This was enjoyable listen. Prob better while chilling in Rio drinking a Caipirinha but hey we can’t always get what we want. Very hard album to actual find. Best I can tell what I got was a compilation that had most of the tracks. Always, good times. 2.75/5
Unfortunately, as a sheltered American I have only knowledge of the English language, so I couldn't understand the lyrics, but I could *feel* them. In all seriousness, a good exposure to someone and a genre I would never listen to. Overall enjoyable.
easy listening. beautiful voice. not really my type of music but i could listen and be content.
Not my cup of tea but a very well made record in the Brazilian tradition
Not for me
sounded good but i don’t gravitate towards it much, really good voice and great energy though
Glad to have heard this. Not my thing but I enjoyed it enough.
Really good to listen to something outside of my usual places to go to. Her voice was incredible, both gravelly and soft. The music was obviously good but it didn’t do much for me.
No idea what she was sing about but she did it well and her band wasn’t half bad either
Really enjoyed the music and the listening. The singing being in Portuguese makes this an album I might not come back to often, but it gave me Brazilian Anita Baker vibes. 3/5!
Type of music you hear in like a waiting room or something, Chill
Another “this was fine but not my favorite”
Yes this is a surprisingly enjoyable listen in a genre I don't listen to and in a foreign language (to me). Beautiful singing and surprisingly contempory-feeling arrangements. Solid 3.5 really.
Not sure what she’s saying but it sounds fun
My reception of this record may have been marred by the day it dropped. It was good, but too long and I was distracted. Since I don't speak Brazilian Portuguese it was doubly difficult to be drawn into its world. That all said, Elis Regina has a wonderful voice and I'm generally into late 70s popular music. The record probably deserves more than 3 stars, but I rate based on how it was received.
There are better Elis Regina albums out there but it was OK
Hard to find, just as hard to judge.
Enjoyable listen, great voice. I found myself vining with the more upbeat tracks. Favourite track, O Mendo de Amar was my favourite track, seemed to have the most as far as musically going on. 3.5 stars
some songs have a bossa-nova vibe to them, others sound a bit more funky, but the guitars are nice overall. I'm not crazy about this though, since I don't understand the language and all, I value lyrics in music personally, the delivery is nice i guess though. I'd rather listen to Getz/Gilberto, I know it's not the same type of music, but i feel it's kinda similar, to me at least (I might be ignorant).
I hope some of her other albums are on the list because I like them more, especially Falso Brilhante
3.5 за латиноамериканские гармонии и за португальский язык
I enjoyed this. Wasn't familiar with this artist beforehand but I loved the funky and jazzy instrumentation in the background. Neat!
Mjög næs, fíla þessa rödd.
Didn’t listen to it all but it was nice enough
This was pretty nice. Feel like Brazil is quite well represented on this list
Rather likeable. Great voice and some Dyerly Dan feels in the music. Shame it's a compilation but will explore a bit more.
definitely not my cup of tea... but i can't say anything bad about it... there's slow pieces, uptempo songs.. bossa nova, pop, psychedelic ... indecisive
Despite the language barrier, I found myself really enjoying a lot of this music.
Very nice to listen to, though it’s not what I would usually listen to. Makes me want to learn Spanish!
A very enjoyable funky listen, but the songs really differ in quality too much to call.this a good album
Two Brazilian artists in a row. I like this one better. Solid pop music that sounds good in any language.
This album is actually called "Elis" (1980 because all of her albums are called Elis), the last studio release before her death. The cover shows her face laughing and opens with "Sai Dessa". This album on this list is a re-release from 2 decades later that reshuffled the track order and included the track "O Que Foi Feito Devera."* Labelled as the umbrella Brazilian genre of MPB, her style is a form jazz fusion that combines pop, soft rock, funk, samba, and smooth jazz to provide a form of easy listening lushful music that emphasizes her expressive vocals and long, lush funky and jazzy instrumentals. It's the kind of easy listening to could put on the background while cruising through the city, similar to Japanese city pop. It's a fine piece that experiments quite a bit. It's a product of its time and doesn't do anything game-changing, with several forgettable tracks, but I was surprised at several points in the record. With a lot of jazz fusion albums, the instruments try to follow too closely to the vocalist like accompaniment, which limits its scope and causes it to re-use tricks. Favorites: O Medo, Aprendendo a Jogar, O Trem Azul, Vento De Maio * "O Que Foi Feito Devera" was originally released on Milton Nascimento's Clube Da Esquina 2 (1978) which is the sequel to the MPB landmark from 1972 that's also on this list (one of my favorite Brazilian albums of all time). And as you'd expect, it's so stupidly out-of-place. I'd identify it as tropicalia. And with how dreamy and psychedelic it is, it has no place with all these upbeat jazz songs. It's crazy and messy but very fun to listen to, and her voice works well.
Enjoyed the craftsmanship of all the musicians. Pretty traditional sounding stuff.
This was pretty good. For some reason this was a little tougher than other world music to get fully immersed in because of the language difference but musically and from a singing standpoint this was good.
This album is alright. Music is pretty good as well as her voice. I could see this being nice in the background in certain scenarios. Is a a must listen? No. But pretty good. 3/5.
I’ve never heard to much non English language music before but this was not bad, it had a somewhat modernish pop or maybe slightly progressive feel to it for an album that was released in 1978.
I’ll admit it, I have absolutely no clue what’s being said here. But this album makes me feel happy and that’s all I care about. Beautiful vocals, and Instrumentals. Just good vibes man.
Lovely music
Pretty nice overall.
Better than I expected. "Se eu quiser falar com Deus" is my favorite :-)
An album that I don't even know is the right one. this supposed must listen of an album is hard to find on the streaming sites. I'm not even sure I listened to the right album, but I've heard enough to get the gist. I never would've guessed that pairing samba and funk would be an interesting sound but this is okay. 3/5.
Nice Brazilian Jazz but not an essential album by any means
Transported me to warmer climes (or on some occasions, a lift).
Me gustó aunque es una compilación, pero considerando que en la lista hay demasiados discos de country, éste se queda.
It was ok. I saved two songs to my playlist but for the most part wouldn’t relisten to the album.
I would have liked to drink bourbon in a smoky bar & listen to Elis Regina!
Ever played persona 5? This is persona 5 music but in Portuguese. I had fun listening.
I enjoyed this album as "nice background music". Without being able to understand the lyrics, I could only follow the music itself. Title track was really nice and made me want to be on the beach. Nothing stood out or seemed particularly memorable. In six months, I expect I won't remember even having listened to it.
A pleasant jazz/bossa nova album from a Brazilian singer. Overall, a mellow vibe and it was great background music when I was cooking dinner. If I ever find myself on a beach in Rio, I will be sure to listen to this album again.
Pretty good Brazilian Jazz. Probably not going to ever listen to this again, but glad I heard it.
Blind album and artist. I liked the vocals range of some of these songs as well as the instrumentals compared to other Latin albums I have heard.
Not bad, but not my style
Une voix qui transmet la joie comme la nostalgie et la révolte (il me semble), alors que les arrangements nous emportent et nous consolent
Oh hey, its my 69th album, nice. Anyways Vento De Maio falls into the same category as the Sinatra/Jobim, Getz/Gilberto, and Booker T's Green Onions in a type of album I call "Elevator Albums". I call them this because their music typically has the vibe you would get from being in an elevator. However, Vento De Maio is better than these other albums i mentioned because the songs feel a little more distinguished from each other even if they are a little too quiet at points. Still a pretty alright album. Best Song: O Medo de Amar e o Medo de Ser Livre Worst Song: Rebento
It is what it is. Old. Portuguese. Outdated. It isn't horrible though. :) 3/5
3 Ok første album. Første indtryk Brasilien og 70' erne. Ikke umiddelbart en favorit. Hun synger flot men det minder for meget om noget jeg ikke lide og Cornelis Wreesvik.
Bossa i snevejr…svært
Great
Hard really to judge this one - seems a random bit of 'world' music in a list that is seemingly just western music. I didn't hate it but didn't enjoy it either.
Brazilian jazz rock with vocals. Meh. Portuguese is a beautiful language but I don’t care for vocals. Music is trite but well-played trite. I had to hear this before I die? Three stars
Schöne Musik, aber nicht für ständug
Pretty cool. There's some interesting avante garde kind of songs, then some regular mellow jazz kind. I dig it. 3.4.
Fínasta plata með rólegri tónlist sem ég gæti viljað setja á fóninn af og til, t.d. yfir mat þegar mig langar til að líta út fyrir að vera tónlistarheimsborgari. Brasilískur söngfugl sem rennur ljúft inn í eyrun.
Good
Pretty enjoyable considering I don't speak the language.
I respect the hell out of it. Won't be listening again, though.
Pretty creative. Love good bossa nova. Ultimately, not really that into it.
Decent. Makes me wonder why there have been more than one Portuguese albums and not many other languages. 3/5
A surprisingly fun album, just sounds like someone having a good time to me.
liked this.
I liked this.
this is cool i guess, it’s not my fave, and i could do without listening to it for 48 mins; but she has a great voice and there’s cool instruments and maybe on a sunny breezy evening in the middle of france or spain or italy i would bang this; but on a -4 london day im just not really feeling it that much but it is really cool. and i love hearing more female voices on this list cause they’re the real influential musicians of the human race let’s be honest.
Avausraita on hyvä, muuten vähän epätasainen ja kokoelmana ei juurikaan yhtenäistä linjaa. 3/5
This is one where I probably would benefit from understanding the lyrics. Beautiful music but didn't really connect for me
Despite it being a completely different language i didn’t hate it. I mean don’t get me wrong not being able to understand it was definitely a set back but I think it was honestly really cool and a nice music sound overall.
okay. 70s bossa/samba. 3.2
Fun, before its time, but not that memorable for not being in English, to me anyway.
ok lounge music, funky but got bored a few times
I really liked the vibe of this but have to admit it didn't super hold my attention! I'm thinking I may need to give it another go in the future.
I didn't know anything about her. After a couple of listens, I found myself getting into a few of the songs: O Trem Azul, etc.
Quite ok easy listening, but also a bit boring after a few songs
This was fun for me because I tried to use my Spanish knowledge to figure out what the songs were about.
Favorite songs: Aguas de Marco Beautiful voice. Classic sound.
Apple Music didn't have Vento de Maio, so I instead listened to an album called "Elis" that included the same songs, except for 1. It was OK.
This is really good soft rock for its era. Some of the electric piano instruments have aged very poorly. But the song structures hold togeather really well regardless. I don't know what the songs are about but I feel them which is more important anyway. This isn't my style of music. But this is great.
Fun and good samba, but better as background music than something to focus on
Hadn't heard of her before, and she certainly had something special..a bit too poppy for my taste but the performance is exceptional
I have no idea what she is saying. Catchy enough funky bluesey souly music. Nothing life changing but good enough
Just not really my thing. I can appreciate it for what it is, but I didn't like it enough to make much of an impression
I really liked this. Was dancing round the kitchen while I was making the dinner. Would listen again. Would give it 3.5 if that was a thing
Great voice, can hear jazz/funk influences especially in O Medo De Amar E O Meno De Ser Livre and Tiro Lo Alvaro. 3.5
its okay, not my cup of tea tho
Glad to say this is on Spotify now. I like samba and Brazilian in general although this is a bit too 70's smooze for me. Still, it's pretty pleasant.
Yea not bad
I think MPB is great and this is a solid contribution to that. hard sometimes to concentrate and actively listen to foreign language music but it is still captivating! best tracks: vento de maio, o medo de amar ... , tiro ao alvaro
Easy listening. Rating: 3.1
Solid
I like some of this, the bossa nova/samba stuff more than the later career material.
I really didn't enjoy this - which is unusual as anything not in English usually grabs my attention. It just seems a little dated and not very interesting. I'll give it 3 stars with the last one being for not being in English.
Quite jazzy, some exciting rhythms. Can't say I'd choose to listen again though, not quite as entertaining as I expected. 2.5 stars.
Thought this album was fairly relaxing and pleasant. Like other non-English albums I feel not understanding the language means I'm missing something significant. Was okay overall but wouldn't listen to it again. Highlights: Sai Dessa Trio Ao Alvaro Aprendendo A Jogar
It's always hard to make a proper judgement when there's a language barrier. Have to go solely on how it sounds..... She definitely has a good voice, I just don't know what she was singing about! It sounded ok. Not sure I'm really that into samba or jazz though but was fine in the background. Apparently it's a compilation album, so should be her best stuff.... Hmm
Nice, jazzy and funky in the background if a little forgettable
Overall good album. Great instrumentals and a great singing voice, but there were definitely sections, where her voice just annoyed me. I don't know why, but that's just how I felt. Still a decent album.
I like my Samba a bit more party than this but it's pretty decent nonetheless
Best Song: Aprendendo A Jogar. Something about that vocal rhythm at the beginning really tickles me. Worst Song: Outro Cais. The solemnity wasn't what I was looking for here. Overall: I kinda like it. It's upbeat. She's got a nice voice. The instrumentals are pleasant. I doubt I'll remember it in a week's time, but I like it while it's here.
Good listen, enjoyed it
Fun - got me excited for my holiday
Fun!
Very good collection of Brazilian Jazz/Funk However, like I said in my Hives review, I don’t know why this list is picking compilations for some artists over actual albums Favourite tracks: Vento Di Maio, Tiro ao Álvaro, Aprendendo Jogar
Totally new genre to me but found there were some good songs on this album, enjoyed more than I was expecting.
Enjoyable Bossa nova album, almost a 4. It's a great genre but sometimes it's hard to stand out enough to make it that memorable
Quite a strange little record, at times the music sounds like early seventies prog rock a la Genesis in their more whimsical moments. Regina was from Brazil and it's sung in her native tongue (Portuguese) so I have no clue what the songs are about. I enjoyed 'Tiro Ao Alvaro', which was one of the more traditional upbeat samba numbers.
Neither amazing nor offensive to my ears.
Great vibe
Smooth but eh…
Had trouble finding this actual album to stream. This artist's release history seems to be a bit of a mess (like half the albums listed on Wikipedia show just the title "Elis" and I assume what's to be found out there is a lot of posthumous compilation). I cobbled a listen together somewhat approximating the named album and found it to be just alright.
Ya know, for the longest time I avoided this one because I couldn't find the album. Helps if you just click the links here :P I actually found this album to be pretty damned solid. The tones are dated to be sure -- very much filled with 80s cheese. But even with the dated sound, its hard to argue with some fat jazzy bass lines and soulful compositions. Not something I would bump often, but it put a smile on my face this morning. Favorites of mine were the swanky So Deus E Quem Sabe, O Trem Azul, and O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre. Solid to high 3.
Respect the musicianship but not my bag.
Pretty jazz stuff but it didn't super appeal to me unlike the other latin jazz albums I've gotten here. can't quite pinpoint why but sometimes it is just that way.
alveg kaflar hér og þar. gríselda gæti rappað yfir sumt en eiga það ógert að því er ég best veit. hlusta held ég aftur. kaffihúsasálarsöngvar.
Very nice vocals with nice accomplishment. Will want to come back to.
I have no idea what is going on, but it is being done in a very nice manner and is pleasing to the ear. Great voice, good musicianship. 3 / 5 stars.
Album #: 180 first impressions: as a spanish speaker, listening to music in Portuguese is distractingly difficult - i feel like i should understand but i do not (& this is when i desended into a wormhole trying to identify the song "Prisencolinensinainciusol" by Adriano Celentano. According to Wikipedia the "the name of the song and its lyrics are gibberish but are intended to sound like English in an American accent." I saw it performed on a YouTube video in like, 2008 and its lived in my head rent-free since then.) after listening through: easy listening/smooth jazz & some funk from the late 20th c (i would guess) as the kids would say, but in portuguese. its fine, a little disjointed. not my favorite genre. Kinda vibed w/ "O Medo De Amare E O Medo De Ser Livre" post-reading reviews/wiki: ok sry, so THIS is bossa nova. i always wondered what that sounded like and...now I know. And I know its not for me. I did appreciate the talent behind the vocals and some of the grooves. It certainly has A Vibe. relisten?: i seriously doubt i will ever relisten, but i could see how some people might enjoy it!
This one squeaks out a 3 I think. Nothing really inspiring but it was interesting and high on the musicianship scale. It was maybe hard to really grasp because it was in another language? but Portuguese is really interesting and smooth at least!
Rational side of me says: her voice is great, fantastic range, interesting arrangements, good musical diversity. Emotional side of me remembers too many nights in Ronnie Scott’s listening to this type of music and being totally underwhelmed! If anyone remembers jazz club guy from The Fast Show - that’s all I can think of right now. He would be mesmerised by Elis. I feel like she’s a glass of lukewarm cola in a hot country after a ten hour flight.
Yeah, this was cool. I didn't have the bandwidth to fully explore it, but there was much to enjoy here. I'm not thrilled that this was a compilation, but whatever, I'm glad I heard it.
Héhéhé, mayo
Yep no idea what she was singing but great voice great music, an album that deserves to be on the list.
Probably not something I’ll listen to again, but I’m glad I listened to it once before I die!
This was basically 80s bops in a nother language? Portuguese?
Had trouble finding the real album, but what I did find had some real cool flamenco guitar and some cool polyrhythm. The wooden flutes give it that real southern South American feel.
This is a fun album. Good singer, some elements of funk. Pretty solid all around.
Pleasant
This is a really nice change or pace after the past few albums we've had (minus Radiohead that shit was sick). The guitar is some of these songs is great, specifically Aprendendo a Jogar. Really digging it a few songs in.
Great voice but not really a go to genre for me so its a one and done.
Good background music
She had a lovely voice, and this was a really pleasant listen. Just because the music isn't in a language you understand, doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.
Interesting Brasilian music. Samba influences apparent but mixed in interesting ways.
What a voice! I had not heard of this artist or her music before. Glad this project introduced me to her.
Ok. I do like some Brazilian samba music and this is decent enough. Not sure how often I’d listen though.
This was a pleasant listen and something fresh from the normal albums on this list 3.5 / 5
I really enjoyed this record! A surprising mix of jazz, bossa nova, and classical, all with a beautiful voice. I especially loved "Sai Dessa."
3.5/5
Well some lovely standout tracks but as a record itself it’s quite middle of the road.
Dreamy, elegant brazillian soft rock. Sounds a lot like the yacht rock/soulful funk stuff that was also happening in the late 70's but with it's own latin twist. This probably deserves 3.5 stars, overall good listen but wasn't super memorable from song to song.
Love me a bit of Brazilian jazz singers. Initially thought this was a complete blind spot for me, before realising this is the Elis from Elis & Tom. But definitely never heard this. Turns out there's a couple of blind spots for me as I was late to the Milton Nascimento album here elsewhere also. Love the duet between the two here. Outro Cais I believe is actually on Clube de Esquina (as is O Trem Azul), but is shorn of the fabulous Beatles-esque actual outro on this outing. Less of the psych fun in general than those versions. There's a couple of more easy listening tracks, and a couple a bit janky very late 70s sounding on here (who is Jackie Ellis?) (slightly odd to have a compo on here with no Wikipedia page) but it's a really great listen, I'm going to have to dig in.
Dinner music. Better than Wilco.
Nice
Different, but oddly it feels too slow for my taste, but there is potential.
Impressive singing to these rhythms. Great musicianship. But I think some of the culture is lost on me as a listener in 2022 in Canada.
Decent world music, standard 3 stars
An interesting listen! I'm not familiar with Elis Regina or her body of work, but I understand that this is a posthumous compilation (that also includes works by other associated artists?) There was enough here that I could groove to, though I wish I could understand Portuguese, as the slower songs suffered from my inability to comprehend precisely what she was singing about. But even without understanding the lyrics, the musical arrangements were enough to chalk this up as a good listen, if not one I plan to return to regularly.
An elusive album to find, still not sure I have the right one Although most tracks here are on the stated album just in different order. Beautiful singing and Vento de Maio sounded familiar.
The challenge I find in post bossa nova genres (apparently!) is that they seem to surrender their viscera to something rather subdued and restrained. Thus this. The voice and arrangements are impeccable - to impeccable, perhaps. File under ‘world music’…
Sai Dessa and Aprednendo A Jogar are groovy hits. I also enjoy Tiro Ao Alvaro. Extremely soothing and relaxing album that can get funky at times
There are actually a decent number of bops here, was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Basslines go hard. Best songs: Vento De Maio, Saudade Eterna
I'm quite split on this one - split along vocals/instruments. As a pop-singer album I don't like it; 2 stars. Elis' vocal delivery has some pathos but really not much else. On the other hand I do enjoy the latin easy jazz / bossa nova instrumentation. As an instrumental album I'd rate this 4 stars.
Prima Braziliaanse Jazz oid
Lovely relaxing chilled tropical beach holiday vibes. Great background music for a fucking freezing day when you're trying to work. It doesn't go any further than that for me though.
I listened to this twice to get a proper feel It actually grew on me. Made me feel like I could be on hols
Not bad, put me in a nice mood. Felt like I was in a bar on holiday by a beach.
Really not a fan of world music. It did have some jazzy elements, though.
Meh
Favorite songs: Vento de Maio Not sure what to really listen for, but she has a beautiful voice.
C’est bon, un peu inégal. Je préfère la mpb des annes 60 et 70
6/10 ok but not spectacular
Fine
It’s a shame I don’t understand French, because I found the music charming and the vocals enticing. Any of these songs could be peppered into an indie film like a “(500) Days of Summer” to give it a bit of exotic flair. I think in English, my score would of been higher.
det är okej å
Needs another listen. Nothing jumped at me, but the sound feels so exotic and familiar at the same time.
Enjoyable, but unspectacular
3 1/2 Bien!
Ragbrai album 3: This album is going alongside Japanese city pop in my ambient road-trip music. Pleasantly passed 50 minutes on the trip back from mason city. Next to last song stood out
Nice change of pace. Not much else to add. 3 stars.
Nice, calming music. Nothing more, nothing less, but that's a hell of an achievement on its own. P.S. Is it me, or are the only exceptions to English this list will allow (while pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist) come from Brazil?
3.4 - Some cool tracks on here (e.g. “Rebento”) but overall it means too heavily in the realm of smooth jazz and quiet storm. I listens to the record a second time and found myself skipping many of the songs.
Parts of this I liked. The last track was fun in particular.
Interesting, delightful.
Definitely better than the Brazilian album we had yesterday - has a lot more edge to it, and attitude. Think it just sneaks a three, although not sure I'd ever listen to it again.
Definitely a fun and pleasant listen, but I didn’t really connect to it much honestly, outside of a few select songs.
I'm always excited to see an album that I've never heard of on here. There's nothing like the feeling of falling in love with an album that you didn't know existed just minutes before. I didn't fall in love with this album, but still the sentiment remains. Part of the problem with this album was that I don't have any context for why it's important. Wikipedia was no help, since this album isn't even listed on her Wikipedia page. It's pleasant enough, but there was nothing to really draw me in. Part of the problem was that the tone on the bass and guitar were sounds that I associate with muzak. Not bad, and perhaps not her fault, but still sounds that I associated with low effort music designed to fade into the background. Here vocals are good, but not sufficient to explain to me why this album is considered notable 3/5
Easy to listen to but nothing standout. Apparently the nation mourned when she died so young.
Pleasant to listen to.
Pop. Bossa Nova
Latin jazz, not bad but not one to listen to again
good brazilian music
Great fusion going from bossaniva to jazz and funk and not the other way around like most other bossanova sounding records on the list
Not my style but it was enjoyable enough.
Such a cool eclectic variety of sounds on this album. Jazz, funk, soul, Latin, and 90s alternative all in one. A unique listen!
This was satisfactory background music for me.
Unusual, different from what I typically expect in Brazilian music. Elis Regina has a really lovely voice. Fave Songs: So Deus e Quem Sabe, Tiro Ao Alvaro, Nova Estacao, Sai Dessa, Vento de Maio
I love the guitar throughout, that jazzy bossa nova style is so cool to me. Her voice seems so effortless and seductive, must be a Brazilian thing. There is some variation in styles from song to song that keeps it interesting as well, from slow love sounding songs to more upbeat fast paced, and some theatrical songs sounding like they were taken from a musical and I can almost picture the movie.
Very nice and pretty, but not the kind of thing I would listen to
Didn’t understood a word of it. Beautiful melodies, varied rhythms. Original and much enjoyed
Enjoyed it more than I expected, but tough with it not being English.
Not exactly my thing, but she does have a powerful voice. And some of the tracks are particularly funky.
Agradable.
Ok
I enjoyed this album especially when acoustic guitar was the principal instrument. She has a lovely powerful voice 3 🌟
Great vocals and arrangement with catchy melodies, despite language barrier.
i love the first song wow! this seems like i'd enjoy it much more if i was listening while it was sunny and not at night but it truly is a lovely album, i know i say this often but the instruments wow
A few really interesting tracks on here - the opening son and Sai Dessa and Outro Cais, but there's a lot of fluff too. Was fun to listen to but probably won't go back outside of a few standout tracks. A strong 3.5 but not quite a 4 in my eyes.
Ritmos brasileños, con estilo propio. Voz femenina con buen timbre. Música alegre y con alguna canción con estribillo un tanto pegadizo.
Quite pleasant
Very pleasant. Some interesting harmonic structures and chord progressions.
okay
Fine. Not really what I listen to where Brazilian music is concerned - more into their fusion and samba (will we have any Jorge Ben Jor, I wonder?) scenes than tropicalia. Tasteful, smooth and jazzy in equal parts, but disappeared from memory almost the moment it finished. Something something seduced by a teacher something.
Very enjoyable
Well that was delightful
Hard to review an album in a language I don't know, but the music was nice. 2.5/5
I love the tropical vibe this album gives. Cool production I just don't see myself going back to it 5/10.
Swinging Brazilian pop!
meh muy suave
Really enjoyed this album. A nice change of pace.
La instrumental mola me falta la caipirinha
A lovely change from the other 70s albums on this list.
Beautiful voice, very cool jazzy sound. Clearly an evolution from bossa nova, the album has a pop feel with a cool Latin groove throughout. I don’t speak a bit of Portuguese so the lyrics are lost on me, but the singing makes up some for the message being lost on me.
interesting listen, definitely not my normal but kind of dug it.
The first few tracks really got me, but the middle tracks were kinda boring. The last 2 tracks were pretty good
cool shit
A pleasant listen, but nothing really stuck out to me.
it was fun, varied. wasn't sure what to expect but liked it.
This was nice, but not really my tempo. Not understanding the language is also a barrier for me to really get into it, but makes for nice background music.
too cheesy for my taste buds.
Violões bacanas; instrumental legal; mas não curto muito a voz dela quando grita nem as músicas que são samba. A voz suave dela é maravilhosa. Melhores: Só Deus é Quem Sabe e Nova Estação
Very cool guitar and a few groovy tunes, but slower songs were a a bit cringy Tiro ao álvaro & Ao medo de Amar highlights
I had a harder time getting into this than I thought I would. Interesting that this stands out a little against a lot of other Brazilian music and that bossa nova style. I wish I could understand the lyrics. I might have to relisten to really start to feel it
I've never heard of this. Should be interesting.
Pleasant. I don't think I would listen again though...
Foreign language, not a problem. Energetic, Latin style music. Good to listen to in background. Didn't engage hugely with this one.
So, I’m wondering, with the zillions of Brazilian artists out there, how they make the decision which few to add to this list. Anyway, Regina has a beautiful voice and I like the variety of styles and arrangements. Spotify says this from ‘98 which I thought was odd, but it’s actually from ’78.
There was a higher than normal barrier for entry on this album but once that hurdle was crossed, I really liked this one. Me te amo latin jazz. I'm not sure if this is as jazzy as it is upbeat but these are the songs I picture playing on the little radios in the shopping center in an island town. When I listen to this I'm on island time but there were some I wasn't a fan of. I'd say this was my least favorite of these albums we have heard so far but that is not a knock.
This Brazilian pop album is pleasant enough, Regina has a lovely voice and range but I don’t think it is up to the high standards of David Byrne’s Lauka Bop label where complies a killer record featuring seminal Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento etc. Now that is a banger of a Brazilian record.
Classic Brazilian music - I generally like the genre and this was alright. 6/10.
Really liking her voice!
Pleasant background music, at times funky. Fave track - "Aprendendo a Jogar" for the wacky backing vocals
It’s very good. Hints of disco. She aged into the late 70’s nicely after some stellar early albums. 3.5.
I think some of this may be lost on me(through not understanding the lyrics *in spanish) but I have to say her voice is amazing and you can still feel the emotion coming through. The instrumentals are also very well done. I enjoyed this album, other than not understanding it.
I couldn't find this album, I did listen to some songs from this artist and found the music charming and engaging.
Culturally I have no touchpoint here, it's nice though.
Kind of Jazz, kind of pop. I have a sad disconnect since I can’t understand what she’s singing. But, I like it.
Decent older Spanish jazz-blues stuff.
Ensikuuntelulla tämä toimi todella hyvin. Ehkä toisella kerralla taika oli vähän hälvennyt jostain syystä. Kuitenkin oikein pätevää ja positiivista jammailua miellyttävällä vokalistilla varustettuna.
A fairly enjoyable, energetic listen! I actually really liked the opening track. Very good music to work to, but not many iconic tracks?
Fun!
Latin pop has some great rhythm and harmony. Well produced.
Not really my thing, but interesting.
Solid brasiliansk vokalist, pop/jazz, sydamerikansk
She's clearly a very talented singer with incredible artistic range. This didn't grab me, and that's as much about the music as it is the fact that it's a foreign language album. Best track: Tiro Ao Álvaro
It was simply okay. She is/was a talented vocalist and some of the arrangements were nice, but I don’t need to hear again.
this kind of foreign language upbeat wanky hipster-cafe jazz was just what i needed on a hungover thursday morning 3/5.
Strange but alright

This woman had a sad story and I likely would have liked this more if it included more upbeat rhythms. The vocals were fine but my lack of understanding the lyrics just left me melancholic. Pretty sure this album is better than I think.
Hm. I always feel a bit ambivalent about this project's tendency to go on walkabout in the forest of Brazilian artists from yesteryear, and this doesn't seem like a great choice for those who aren't well-versed in Brazil's voluminous musical history. Elis Regina seems to have a good voice, and it was interesting to read about her early role in propelling "Brazilian popular music" as an alternative to bossa nova, plus her contributions to tropicalismo and her television shows that showcased new artists, but the music on this album doesn't have much to offer beyond a kind of easy-listening vibe for much of the album, which isn't nearly as interesting as her life story (although the second half has more life to it, thankfully, and even gets a bit funky, 70s style). And sad that she ODed at the age of 36 (vermouth, cocaine and tranquilizers, apparently).
Fine
Not my thing but can appreciate
Orchestral MPB and Brazilian pop built from elaborate arrangements, fluid rhythms, lush instrumentation, and commanding vocals feels like being invited to an elegant theatrical performance where everyone else seems to know the script—impressive, dramatic, and strangely distancing. Not knowing the script I stumble aimlessly as the operatic performance proceeds without me getting the reference to the last person performing it.
It was ok
Seemed ok, but not my style, or language.
album #62 fine but not my vibe as much. ꩜ album rating: ★★⯪☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,027 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 31 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 12 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 50
Not my thing
Sounds like the parody chanel 9 songs off The Fast Show. Not my vibe, couldn't get into it. I was half expecting her to sing "KREEEEES.... WADDDUL!"
No thanks not my thing. 2 stars
Artiste inconnue. Album plutôt latin que Jazz, et plutôt vocal (manque de chorus), ce qui ne m'attire pas vraiment. Pas désagréable à écouter (+1), mais une seule fois ... =>2/5
I like how this music sounds but I never want to listen to it
Solid but forgettable. Wouldn’t skip if song came up but probably never put on again.
Tight musicianship and composition, although not fully my thing
This is a compilation, but I struggled to find the album on Spotify. The listener counts for this 50 year old album are underwhelming...No one has been listening to this and I wonder why I find myself about to hit play. She has a long and impressive catalog but it's bossa nova/jazz and I don't understand or enjoy it even a little bit. They all kinda sound the same, they are all in Portuguese so I have no idea what's being said. Not my thing, not willing to listen to the entire album either. Somebody in another country will get more joy from this than I possibly can. 2 stars not cause it's bad, but because I don't get it or enjoy the genre. I firmly believe I would have rested peacefully having never listened to this album.
Sounds like they're having fun but I wasn't, although Saudade Eterna was an exception. I've heard many better albums in this genre so I'm not sure why this is here. A generous 2 from me because maybe I just wasn't in the mood, and not understanding the lyrics is a slight disadvantage if the music doesn't quite grab you..
Damn it. You know, for being as Eurocentric as this list tends to be, there’s a surprising amount of Latin jazz that crops up. And I pretty much hate all of it. I can appreciate that this record goes in some unexpected directions, but I’m not really into those directions. I also will typically rate things not sung in English lower than I would normally because I can’t understand it, and it’s my prerogative to do that. 4/10
Maybe I wasn't in the mood for this today, but this wasn't interesting. I like Latin music and jazz - but this just didn't work for me at all. Also, this is a compilation album; this is the "best of" and isn't great.
..
Baš nezanimljivo, jedna pjesma mi je bila kul, ostalo dosta dosadno. 2/5, 4/10
Not my thing, sorry.
I'm not familiar with Elis Regina at all and wasn't familiar with her music, but after reading about her, she was clearly an important musical figure in Brazil particularly. So, it totally makes sense that a compilation album of hers would be included on the list. I found the music to be a bit mellow. She has a beautiful voice and I found the music easy to listen to.
Some nice pieces but not my speed would be nice relaxation music
Breezy pool-side jams for a muggy afternoon. Smooth jazz, rubbery bass, super 80s production, samba rhythms, some more uptempo funk, loads of that floaty dreamy unresolved Brasilian Portugese melodic phrasing that always seems flat or like it doesn't have enough notes. I don't know why that style bothers so much, but I find the vocals incredibly grating.
