Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Oh wow, Le Tigre rocks. Was not familiar going into this but absolutely loved it. Deceptacon is an amazing song. What's yr Take on Cassavetes and Slideshow At a Free University were also highlights.
Never heard of them before but loved listening to it. I love the simple riffs, the distored guitar, the electronic sounds, the rhythms. It's the sort of album which could have been made any time between 1980 up to today and it would work. Love it. Definitely looking up their other stuff.
Can't believe I'm just now finding out about this band
Reminded me of Blood red shoes: fresh and energetic.
Loved this. Fortunately the mention of (John) Casavetes, an actor & film director I admire, in the title of track 3 inspired me to check out the lyrics of that track - “Misogynist? Genius?…Alcoholic? Messiah?” Subsequently I read the lyrics of all 12 tracks. I don’t usually do that. But I was interested to see how the band approached the “girl power” movement of that time. They do it in an often lighthearted way from the get-go. The opening track, Deceptacon, which sounds a bit like X-Ray Spex & a lot like the B-52’s, revolves around the lyrics of the Barry Mann 1961 novelty hit, Who Put The Bomp, in an attempt to equate riot grrrl with The Spice Girls, who were huge at the time. Hot Topic is a name-dropathon of feminist icons, many musicians. I love the opening line of Slideshow At a Free University - “ We favor the simple expression of the complex thought.” And that’s what they do on this album. Loved it.
Dance punk
I really enjoyed this one
Chaotic indie disco punk. Stand out tracks - Deceptacon - Hot topic
I really enjoyed this album. Pithy lyrics, straight ahead punk. It's not my usual thing, but damn if I didn't listen to this album all day.
First track so reminded me of X-Ray Spex which is no bad thing.
Listened to half of it. Very fun
Enjoyed quite a bit of it
I feel like I’ve heard of Le Tigre before but I can’t quite place where. I can’t say with any confidence what there Music even sounds like (before listening) so I’m excited to hear them today. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Hot Topic, What’s Yr Take On Cassavetes This was such a fun album to listen to. It reminded me a lot of Plumtree who I’m a big fan of. It wasn’t over-produced which gave it more of a fun feel, like you’re listening to a very tight band practice in a garage somewhere. 90’s alt rock is always going to go down well with me, and it is unsurprising to find that I really enjoyed this. Le Tigre will definitely be in my mind for any party playlists.
The patron saints of Riot Grrl sonically tear the place up with endearing attitude and effortless cool. Feminism for a new generation.
Pretty great album. Catchy and melodic but still has some dissonant punk vibes.
Punchy, punky, poppy brilliance! Loved this! Had never heard of them prior but I really enjoyed this! They sound so tight as a band, crisp and clean and the music is just great! Loved it!
A band that punches way above their weight, great album, giving this 4 TKOs. 🥊🥊🥊🥊
Good Friday jams
It's like The Bangles decided they were edgy. I like it!
Nice finding
I actually really enjoyed this.
Really fun feminist music, I did not realize I had heard one of their songs before.
I like it. Never heard before
Fun, new wavey, punk rock great for jamming out to on a summer day. The songs have a very cheeky, sarcastic vibe to them. Some tracks are a little more aggressive, some are a little more lyrically centered, and I think there's a good mix throughout to where the album never gets stale. I wouldn't call it a must-listen, but I could see myself enjoying this one again down the line.
wanna disco wanna see me disco deceptacon is obviously incredibly iconic. one of punk's best and most straightforward tracks. that was all i knew going into the first time i heard this album a few years ago, but knowing more now, it's easy to see how special this album is. great stuff all around. happy that they're doing some shows this year
this was a fun lazy listen!
I really don't listen to this kinda music a lot and I really like it. I think Bikini Kill is so cool and Le Tigre is as well. The songs kinda sound similar but I like the lack of levity and punkiness of it all.
Good for a debut album in 1999. It has that very 1999 feel about it, in the same way The Breeders do. Do I detect some Stripey Jack in those riffs Beau? 3.5
They’re featured on Spotify playlists named “Homoelectric” and “Queercore”… 1/5 … Jk Really enjoyed this tbh, despite the bloke(?) on the album cover being a spitting image of Mesut Özil
better with more listens, liked the sound.
On the one hand, the music reminds me of the bands that Fred Armisen would make fun of on SNL in the early 2000s. The "What's Yr Take On Cassevetes" is easy fodder for that. Having said that... I dug a lot of this. It reminds me of the early B52s, like a cross between them and the Go-Gos. "Slideshow at Free University" & "Les and Ray" I could have easily done without, though.
For those who don’t know Le Tigre is French for Der Tiger. I really liked this album. It was silly, energetic, fun and had some catchy and crafty tunes. Not sure what my favorite track was. I think I just liked them all. Recommended if you’re in the mood for something fun to lift your sprits after a bad day.
I have mixed feelings about this album. Kathleen's voice isn't my favorite and sounds very poppy at times (I think it's just the way her voice sounds, nothing against her), but there is a lot of fun things musically: electronic influence, angry guitars, some very charged lyrics. I just wish I liked her voice more. Still a pretty good album. Favorite Tracks: The the Empty, Phanta, Slideshow at Free University
Deceptacon e typ en top 10 of all time låt o my my MetroCard e sick. Resten går nästan lika hårt men int helt.
Bamboo banger
Hårt
Very good
Obstinat och roligt.
Super fun and lively, but not the best album to listen to while relaxing. Abrasive in a fun and punky way. Will listen to it again for sure.
Enjoyed this album very much, felt like a perfect mash of alternative and rock music at some points of the album, very reminiscent of Alvvays. Favourite songs: Deceptacon, The the Empty, Phanta, Eau D’bedroom dancing, Les Rey 4/5
I was listening to a lot of music in 1999 and I'm barely familiar with the name, Le Tigre. I wonder how this is going to go? Wow, this really wasn't bad. How did I possibly miss this? Anyway, I played the album the times during the day and moved a few songs into playlist rotation. Nice surprise pick, this is what I was hoping for here.
Hell yea
Every once in a while on this list you'll come across an album that's just a bunch of cool women being awesome and fuckin around. This is one of those times. Punky and catchy and fun.
That was a fun experience :)
I know neither who put nor took the bop to or from the bop be bop be bop.
go-fastre stripes
Really liked this one!
I can certainly see how this album is not for everyone, but I can’t express enough how much I respect them for being unapologetically themselves. Such a strong and specific vibe that I’ve not heard replicated before or since. Shame this isn’t more well known. 4/5
Top 10 girl boss albums oat.
banger
This is kind of annoying but also kind of great?
I had never heard this before, but it's definitely in line with what I like. I'm a sucker for female led indie punk. Some of the tracks are not exactly my style, but overall I'm into it.
This is a phenomenal Riot Grrrl/punk/new wave album. I can hear influences from 50s rock and roll, the punk/post punk movements of the 70s and 80s and the DIY/garage rock movement as well. The songwriting is concise, and the arrangement is wonderful. Le Tigre uses both electronic and traditional rock instrumentation to create something that sounds explosive yet controlled. This is feminist music with a purpose and it kicks ass
Telling Giuliani to fuck off before it was cool.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Quirky fun, a little punky / new wavy. I digged it.
Been a fan of Deceptacon for awhile, not sure if i had listened to the whole album before. Pretty great.
This is an album that was missed by me that shouldn't have been, it's right in my wheelhouse. I enjoyed it very much!
I listened to this album a few years ago, but wasn't impressed. Maybe it was because I was comparing it too much with Kathleen Hanna's previous band, Bikini Kill, which is hard to top. Re-listening to this album, I have a new appreciation with Le Tigre when rating the record now, it held up well on it's own. I normally aren't a fan of electronica and sampling, but it's catchy, melodic and punky, at times. It's very dance-able and fun and I must admit I enjoyed it. The songs are well written and the political messages are still relevent today. I'm glad I re-visited this record.
Liked this a lot, good energy
- Never heard of Le Tigre before - Really impressed - Best tracks are really good - Fav songs: Deceptacon, Les and Ray, Eau d'bedroom Dancing
My daughter turned me on to this album a few weeks ago. I dig it. I do think it overstays its welcome by the end—as do so many punk albums—but it's a fun ride up through "My My Metrocard." It's playful and angry and quirky and funny and it makes me wanna grab my guitar. What more can you ask of a record? Also, "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes" made my day.
I appreciate this sound more than I did when I was younger. I definitely liked the music coming from women bands around this time. This album feels like something Jen and I would put on for a long hang or drive (Friendship Station!). Yes some songs are monotonous and the lyrics screamy (Let's Run). I appreciate their keen observation pre 9/11 ... "Oh fuck Giuliani, he's such a fucking jerk." Maybe I like these women simply because they were women in the late 90s doing this and simply because of that, I'm going to give this album a 4 in terms of a must listen before you die.
Good album.
Scott Pilgrim vibes, the music evokes a sense of color. Perhaps a rare moment of synesthesia, but a surprisingly welcome one at that. Musically, there is a lot of groove, strong beats and a rather beautifully sounding mix. The sounds of punk have always seem to focus on drums and guitars, with the bass as an afterthought lacking musical thump in favor of angsty lyrics and the sound of their own voice, but not here. Punk energy, rock melodies, and plenty of bass, this album becomes a really solid experience that cannot necessarily be labeled into a particular genre. Lyrics honestly were mostly ignored, not for any real reason other than this reviewer is speaking of the experience of what they hear, not so much what is being listened to at an extrapolative level. This album was remarkably fun and if grief or praise were to be given for liking it, the response will be an apathetic shrug.
Dug it! It was like Sleater Kinney met up with Phoenix and had a sweat little baby.
wild
Minus the group sex album, I'm on a streak of pretty good albums including quite a few that I've never heard of. This was a good female-led, neo-punk album and the first track was especially good.
Quite okay
For a band I've never heard of, this was way better than expected.
This seemed much older than 1999. I would have pegged the music style as from the 80’s. Fun and high energy songs.
Good bangers, very nearly a 5
Well, that was interesting. I really liked it. I'll have to hear more of their stuff.
Really good, fun album.
An angular dance punk classic
I liked this a lot! Original, creative, and fun. I loved the production - each instrument stood out on its own yet also contributed to a unified whole (if that makes any sense at all). Definitely will listen again and explore Le Tigre's other work. 4 stars.
Punk. It shreds 👌
Great progression in sound from Kathleen Hanna
Their music has lots of attitude and lyrics have edge. No girly band shit going on here.
🕺 💃
Absolutely loved this. Have no recollection of hearing them before. Can’t believe this isn’t more famous. Very good. Will listen again.
Likably DIY and attitudinal. “Hot Topic” is a highlight, one of the awesomer pop tunes of the late ‘90s – all politically/socially aware songs should be this danceable. “Eau d’Bedroom Dancing” is good fun, too and the last few tracks are engaging, too. Solid, fun and interesting – a rare trifecta for pop bands to pull off, especially second acts and side projects.
tuuungt
WHO TOOK THE BOMP FROM THE BOMPALOMPALOMP, WHO TOOK THE RAM FROM THE RAMALAMADINGDANG!? Love Le Tigre. Love this album.
Awesome album
The riot grrrl evolution into dance punk just works so well. Excellent and fun record. My only takeaway is that the vocals do edge on annoying after a while.
It is fun, punky, and dancy. Simple, yet effective.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: The the empty, Phanta
Another surprise. Never heard of this band, but really enjoyed listening. Infectious post-punk from what sounds like an all female group. Very likeable.
not what I expected i like
I don't know why but to me this sounds like a more punky and aggressive version of the B52's, specifically their debut album. Has that similar singular riffing guitar with the bright yet mechanic keyboards and drums backing it up in a fair chunk of the songs, especially Deceptacon, Phanta, and My My Metrocard. Although you do get the more serious lyrics instead of partying with rock lobsters. Aside from comparisons and the differences in lyrics, Le Tigre stands out on its own too. There's the 90s flair and horns in Hot Topic, the previously mentioned punky tones in The the Empty, the 80s new wave feel in Eau D'bedroom Dancing, and even hip hop beats in Slideshow at Free University. I'd say I liked 7 or 8 songs on this album a lot, and the rest either sounded like repeats or were just meh.
Fun
A pleasant surprise. I didn't anyone was still making fun dance punk songs in the late 90s. It's artsy with New Wave-esque synth weirdness and a fuzzy guitar. Love the dynamic female vocals. I need to check out that riot grrrl playlist Spotify has.
Better than I remembered
Wow. The first 3 songs are sooo good. Clever, catchy and they rock like he'll. Can't help but drop off from there but it's not like it comes to a screeching halt there's plenty of other great songs to help carry us to the end. Kathleen Hanna is an American treasure. 4.5 🌟
Generic punk rock. But very good one!
Really enjoyed it, many deja vu feelings of love/hate/funny that punk rock gave me. Never heard them before.
Ok this is right up my alley...probably gonna get an unfair rating in the positive direction for that. Great energy throughout. Im sure the lyrics are also great, but I haven't had time to absorb them, though I have caught glimpses of deeper meanings.
buenisimo. una onda punky glam
Angry and danceable. Brilliant stuff.
Quite nice for punk
Reminds me a bit of the Ting Tings. Good poppy fun.
Some of the stuff on the back half of the album really surprised me. A lot of it probably went over my head. 7/10
wyldin around with alot of energy
Love feminism
I enjoyed this. Punky call vocalist
Good punk music
Man the first three songs of this album are stellar. I love the Cassavetes tune...in fact all of side one is great. Side two slows down the pace of great songs unfortanetely keeping this fine album from a full 4 star rating from me. 3.75 stars
4.0 - It’s got a boppy Go-Go’s vibe that’s been put through the DIY-bedroom recording blender. Add a dash of pink chainsaw to the mix. Fun!
its like a better version of the band from Scott pilgrim
Punk-pop. No está mal.
The debut album of Le Tigre has a definitive sound with essences of; grunge Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 80s pop, with 60s fashion and feels like the start of something bigger. The starting track “Deceptacon” has the quirkiness of The Bangles and with synth driving grunge beats. The album has highlight tracks that keep me coming back; “The The Empty”, “Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing”, “Les and Ray”. With many highlights there are a few slight misses. The album has concept pieces and some work better than others, “Phanta” the beat needs more of an evolution and becomes stagnant, where as “Slideshow At Free University” is a spoken word concept piece but feels rounded and formed. There are 90s essences for sure in this record that can be heard in “Dude Yr So Crazy” and “Friendship Station” with beats and over vocals. Overall: This record has some 5/5 songs and leads to an overall score of 4.5/5 stars. Great record.
Girl Punk! YaY! like an early Bombpops kind of sound. Almost hypnotic looping on Hot Topic. One of the founders was in Bikini Kill, so that explains the similarities in sound. The The Empty is great. Artist at Free University is also great. this will need another spin to say if it is a 4 or a 5 in my book.
a rounded up 3.5 (I'd say 3.75 but I'm not about to get into .25s). super grungy which I of course like.
Never heard of them, but then again, the late 90's / early 00's newer music and Riot Grl were not my focus. I dig it, love the quirky lyrics and the different sounds they came up with. Very much a They Might Be Giants meet early Beastie Boys vibe. I'm glad I discovered this (new to me) band. Is Le Tigre an album I must hear? Maybe? Does it belong on this list? Would give 3.5 - 3.75 but will round up to a 4.0 for this one.
28th May 2021 Listened on the car on the drive back home. Surprised at how much I enjoyed it, lots of punk, prog influences and a bit of electro thrown in too. Good fun.
Shit was popping ngl. Would fight god with Deceptacon playing in the background.
Still original, 20 years later
This album is so good. Fuck Rudy Giuliani. This ladies knew what was up.
Best tracks: Deceptacon, The The Empty, My My Metrocard
Light, easy-listening electro-punk
I enjoyed this a lot.
enjoyed this
"Wanna disco? Wanna see me disco? Let me hear you depoliticize my rhyme" (Deceptacon) "All that glitters is not gold I went to your concert and I didn't feel anything (is not gold)" (The the empty) Somos la víscera el puñetazo la hemorragia etc.
pop rock feminista
Inspired in places, boring in others. The satirical stuff mostly lands, but the bits that don't have aged like milk. However, some of the music is great - 'Deceptacon' is nothing short of brilliant, whilst 'What's Yr Take On Cassavetes' is a real hoot.
This album had a lot of ups and downs for me. It starts strong with the first track that is a perfect blend of rawness, punk, catchiness and message. It falls off hard on the next two tracks and I was worried this was a one-hit album. That wasn’t the case but there were only a handful of songs I thought I’d listen to again but those songs are so good I still give this a high rating. I’d have loved this album if I knew of it back in 99.
Buen sonido
Loved it!
Surprised by this album. Raw, energetic, fun.
Catchy, sometimes a bit noisy and a shrill, enjoyed listening
The music is good, but the lyrics are a little bit too ironic and inscrutable for me to really get into. Highlight of the album for me is "Slideshow at Free University".
How in the living shit did I miss this when it was released in 1999? I mean if an album shouts out Sleater-Kinney, Billie Jean King and James Baldwin in one song, discusses Cassavetes in another, and calls Rudy Giuliani a fucking idiot in yet another, then yeah that’s an album that deserves to be on this list.
Banging electro rock! Great stuff. Fave track - "Decepticon" - that track kicks ass!
Electro punk feminist- I quite enjoyed it. I couldn’t decide if it was trying to be edgy or actually was edgy. But still a lot of fun
Only got through the first track "Decepticon" and really loved it.
Post-grunge 52s
Good for listening to while working. Garage rock vibes, English lyrics.
Amazing! A new addition to my playlists. Love the punk vibe.
Saw them back around 2002 in St Louis. Fun show. I like the punk energy combined with the minimal synth and samples. This music is like a Kind bar where it's sorta healthy but it's really just a candy bar.
I had always heard of Le Tigre but had never heard them. Great album! Very ahead of their time.
Never heard of this but really interesting.
Decent.
it's got a couple of great songs on it, and it's an important contribution to punk music. it's just not as compelling as it thinks it is. still, people interested in the history of punk and subgenres like dancepunk should give this a spin
7/10
Honestly I didn’t mind this at all, although the glass shattering effects hurt my ears. I did not like that. -1 point for the glass effect
Tiger go grrrrl
Enjoyed the raw vibe but nothing something I would listen to regularly.
Le Tigre’s debut album feels like feminism, ‘90s alternative, and The Go-Go’s were fed through a meat grinder and stitched back together into something uniquely their own. It was fine for a single listen, but I can’t see myself coming back to it.
It was interesting and had it some nice moments. I can’t really remember much about it today, though, so it can’t have made much of an impression.
I like the riot grrrl aesthetic and aims, but never found that the music was quite my bag. That said, there is a time when I would have ‘deceptacon’ on many a mixtape as it is a great song and fit with a lot of the dance punk stuff I was into at the time (I think there was a DFA remix of it that was great too). The album doesn’t quite match that high though and eventually peters out by the end.
Actually quite fun. I love the bass sound. But I couldn't stop thinking about their pro-Hillary song "I'm With Her" and how, while these songs are obviously better, they're basically made of the same parts. Not just musically, but lyrically. It's all so 2010s. So I guess they were ahead of their time, just to a time that was arguably worse. At least for this kind of thing.
General style is something I enjoy, and I can see the potential that Le Tigre eventually became but it's not quite there yet.
who hit the reack to the ding dong
Would of gave 4 but I only added a couple also thats literally weston long hair picture
very punk very rock very indie very women very fem this was pretty fun and a good length
Overall: 2.5 (rounded to 3) Consistency: 2.5 Originality: 3 Enjoyment: 2.5 Virtuosity: 2
Deceptacon is a very fun opener. It’s very of its time. 3.5 rounding down
Love the classic punk vibes and the carefree nature of the lyrics/singing. Solid 3/5 album for me
Spiky. And angry. Quite probably rightly so
Phanta
I wasn't really sure what to expect. The album cover and very brief information I read about the artist had me fearing the worst. In general it was not my sort of "thing" at all, but although I didn't actually find myself getting into it there were more than a few tracks that I actually enjoyed. QUite a few absolute wankstains too.
Nice one but a little bit out of date nowadays. Still fun to listen to though.
Fun catchy riffs How do people talk about music
Not bad
75
Cool for '99
It's mostly fun and upbeat. Some decent songs, but there are many that are repetitive and kind of get lost in the grand scheme. Liked the Giuliani dig. 3/5 Might listen again
Quirky fun punk
It's decent, a pretty good feminist and punk adjacent album. It has a good few high points, and this will really work for a lot of people. It's just simply, not really my thing tbh. I like parts of this and the more genre mixing style tracks click more with me. But overall it's not really something I would be coming back to. Give it a try though, it may be your thing. Maybe if I had a metro card... Fav Track: Deceptacon
They're angry about something, but I like it.
There were some pleasant jams on Le Tigre. I can say that the thing that left the biggest impression on me was how the album has two distinct parts. The first being more punk and dance-oriented, while the latter ventures into more experimental territory. That alone makes it a worthwhile listen. The structure of the songs is simple but effective. It’s punk, but it also has a message, and at times it can even feel lo-fi, which makes for an interesting combination alongside the angst and energy present throughout many of the tracks. I can’t say all of it is great, but I also wasn’t waiting for it to end. I really enjoyed "My My Metrocard" and "Slideshow at Free University".
3.5/5, probably the most I've enjoyed punk musically
Probably the closest I’ve gotten to enjoying punk. 7/10, would perhaps listen again
Le Tigre’s self‑titled debut is a jittery, neon‑colored blast of electro‑punk energy — the kind of record that feels like it was stitched together from zines, protest flyers, and thrift‑store keyboards. It’s clever, political, and defiantly DIY, but it also has a habit of getting on your nerves just when you’re starting to settle into its groove. What Works “Eau d’Bedroom Dancing” steals the whole album. It’s the rare moment where the band’s lo‑fi charm, emotional clarity, and melodic instincts line up perfectly. Sweet, strange, and quietly hypnotic. The production is intentionally scrappy, but in a way that gives the album personality rather than making it feel unfinished. When the band leans into their playful side, the record feels alive — like a late‑night art project that suddenly turned into a party.
Was getting some Japanese Breakfast vibes here. A bit grating but still fun.
I liked this quite a lot!
7/10 Highlights: Deceptacon Phanta Eau D'Bedroom Dancing
Boven verwachting plezierig. 7/10 Deceptacon Phanta
Lowkey agitational.
Legendarisk intro. Blir litt mye av det samme.
Fun and interesting, but ultimately not something I'll put into the rotation. Good backing sound while cleaning the bathroom.
I listened to this shit while riding an E Bike through North East DC and I've never felt cooler in my damn life.
Maybe Im biased because I know the sentiment behind these songs, but I am always open to listening to women screaming... i think. When I first realised that I much preferred listening to men screaming than women screaming I got a bit disgusted with myself for holding double standards, so maybe I rate these angry female albums higher than my actual enjoyment because I feel the need to make up for it.
First time I listened to this, I despised it, the second time I began to appreciate it a bit more but I still have no idea what is going on or what they're going on about. Might as well be in a foreign language and I'd still have about the same level of understanding. Definitely liked the first half of the album more, it felt a bit wackier but then maybe I got tired of them by the second half, these people are a bit exhausting to spend time with.
Never heard of Le Tigre before. It's interesting, fun would be the word that describes this album. The spiritual successors of Poly Styrene and XRay Spex put to pop music.
446/1089 - This is for sure dance punk music.
Very groovy, but not that good.
Kinda reminded me a bit of the B-52’s at times.
Some things never change. Rudy Giuliani is still a fucking jerk.
Solid
Not too bad.
Cool album, very high energy. Very 90s alt rock. Good listen.
Dig Kathleen Hanna, bikini kill and riot grrl writ large, but this project I find I like less. Was pumped to see it on the list but Deceptacon is by far the high point on the album and its track 1. I want to like the rest of the album more but it just sounds pretty sophomoric and high schooly.
The instrumentation is quirky and vibrant, but I never really cared too much for the singer. Something about her just kind of annoys me. I wish I was more into it because I like the message in the songs but I just find a lot of them grating, especially The The Empty. I appreciate this more than I enjoy it, even if it's not bad.
This was a really fun mash-up of a lot of genres I didn't expect to find here. Yes it's punk but there was plenty of early punk and electronic music on the front end and Os Mutantes on the back end. Bonus points for the album cover from Spongebob Squarepants. Really liked the electronic touches that seemed more in place in the late 70s/early 80s than the late 90s. Probably a 3.5
Starts strong and then tapers pretty quickly. A lot of catchy hooks and riffs; it's a fun mash-up of styles.
I really liked this! Can’t believe I never heard any of this before!
First song was great. Album themes were up my street (especially the anti-Guiliani song). But then it became more punk than I care for and I didn't enjoy it that much. The Cassavetes song was rather undermining of any class tradition (I had to look him up). Still, I appreciated it and liked enough to give it a 3 even if I don't think I'll listen again.
A pretty good album, I liked Decptacon and Phanta the most.
Has its moments, not my style
Pink flaps brother
I only knew the one track before listening to this, Deceptacon, and none of them were as good.
Half way through the first track, I knew that my challenge buddy @boopidoo would be 5 staring this one! I'd love to vote it up a bit, but it's just not my thing! We are building a playlist with a single song from all our 5-star albums, I wonder which one she will pick!
Always pushing the envelope of melody
Good, but i could use a bit more taste. Unsalty.
Alright
I’ve heard of these guys. May know a track. Cool stuff.
Used to listen to Bikini Kill a fair bit. This is different but just as cool

OK.
Is this like Bananarama got guitars and started doing riot music? Maybe. It dissolves in the second half and wears out its welcome by the end, which is not good since the album is rather short. Then again, it is an interesting experience. If only the singing was better than the wailing.
6/10
Some cool ideas here. I really liked the “eau de bedroom dance” song… some songs really annoyed me though. 2.5 in reality
Great energy. Opener was an absolute banger!
Nice sounding “lady rock and roll” as my daughter puts it. I gave it a couple of listens and enjoyed it, though maybe didn’t have any major takeaways from it.
The retro vibes are strong, but this still sounds fresh. 3.35/5
Light 3,5
28/02/2026 *1. deceptacon - know this already! love the bass/guitar.... *2. hot topic - bass is nice again. like the drums. love the horns. guitar just started, reaaallly nice. scratching :) david wojnarowicz!!!! 3. what's yr take on cassavetes - already know this one as well... vocals are a bit annoying at times.... love the barking at the end. personally love cassavetes <3 *4. the the empty - noisy... bit industrial.. lyrics are very brett easton ellis. can't decide if i love or hate the vocals lol. love the stopping and starting. *5. phanta - just realised i've heard this one before lol. love the chorus. beeping is nice. radio speaking reminds me abit of booming and zooming. great ending. 6. eau d'bedroom dancing - bass is great!!! love the guitar. not massive on the vocals.... bit boring. 7. let's run - like the morse code? beeping at the start. not massive on this one either. more what i was worried about when i got this album. where has the bass gone??? vocals and lyrics are a bit on the annoying side. 8. my my metrocard - very 60s... like the keyboard and the drums. lyrics and vocals are a bit grating. *9. friendship station - like the beat of this. love the guitar. nightclubbing vibes. 10. slideshow at free city - bit repetitive. not massive on this one. 11. dude yr so crazy!! - like the bass. not sure if i like this one or not... definitely interesting, maybe just not my thing? *12. les and ray - more poppy... vocals are a little bit grating. love the doo-doo-s in the instrumental. sweet! know a few le tigre (and bikini kill) songs and, although i like them, was a bit worried that a whole album of them would be a bit preachy and the vocals would start grating. although the vocals did start grating in my least fvourite songs, i didn't find it overly preaching. was surprisingly poppy! really loved the first five songs, but kindof fizzled out towards the end after eau d'bedroom dancing.
Album generates: vague recognition. First track: ah its these guys, i like this track. Later on: i dig the vibe and enjoyed the album but it peaked early and ran out if steam quickly!
Nice
oh that song??
Only listened to 3/4 of the album but quite enjoyed it. Riot Grrl - a genre I didn't even know existed - an underground feminist punk movement that started in Olympia and Seattle. Should re-visit as it was fun, but also not something I would really listen to outside this project. 3.5
Oh this is some fun punk rock. This was probably used in Apple commercials. Deceptacon being the big hit. Otherwise the album is ok.
Not the best album but still a pretty decent one
Immaculate vibes. Good stuff, not my go-to style, but I'm very glad I got to hear this, a couple damn fine tunes.
For 1998, it feels both derivative and cutting edge at the same time. Lots of 70s and 80s art rock/Kim Gordon influences, but also forbears the sounds of Sleater-Kinney and the like. A couple of cool tunes to throw on the DJ sets once in awhile.
Their debut album. Indie Rock / Punk. Deceptacon is a really catchy opening and the album's best song. The album has a lot of good tones and beats. Musically it is very good, lyrically it is a bit preachy, but at least they have authentic feelings and ideas and aren't doing a late 90s Spice Girls.
The first four tracks were ok at best. Just typical punk from that time period. From "Phanta" onward, "Self Titled" gets better. "My My Metrocard" is a nice throwback to '60s garage rock. I would say something about the vocals, but it's punk, so they don't matter. 3 stars for "Self Titled".
Dit is nieuw voor mij. Ik kan de meeste liedjes wel appreciëren
interesting punk album, worth a listen
Fast, abrasive and youthful. Starts off strong with the punky and bouncy 'Deceptacon' and continues with many tracks in the same vein. Besides the post-punk influenced, 'Eau d'bedroom Dancing,' none of the other tracks particularly grab my attention, drifting by in a wash of angsty, poppy vibes. Lyrically, there is a lot there to enjoy. Sonically, the lo-fi charm starts to wear out its welcome.
Good driving rock with punk elements. I hear a lot of influence on the girl rockers of today in this one. Favorite track: Phanta
I wasn’t totally convinced when it started. The opening track has an intensity to the vocals that feels like they’re trying just a bit too hard. But as the album went on, I have to admit it started to win me over. The mix of attitude, lo‑fi electronics, and that unmistakable riot‑grrrl edge has a certain charm once you let it sink in. It’s messy, energetic, and has a real sense of purpose running through it. I probably won’t return to it — it didn’t quite land in the “must hear again” category for me — but as a one‑off listen, it ended up being a decent, surprisingly engaging experience.
Deceptacon heel goed, de rest minder
3.5 probably needs more listens to become a 4
When I first saw the band was called Le Tigre, I braced myself for another album in a foreign language. Turns out my worries were totally misplaced. Their self-titled record instantly brought to mind classic 1960s girl groups, along with the catchy energy of The Bangles and The Go-Go's. Super fun and enjoyable listen overall.
I simply cannot imagine a world where this is deemed an album one should hear before dying, ahead of a single album by The Gathering.
Great live at the time, record hasn't aged so well as the memories
Ok, ima zabavan vibe ali nista special. 6/10 Najbolja pisma: Hot topic
Genius! Misogynist! I've really only heard Deceptacon before, and its a good start to the album. I found a lot of the album fun with a range of energy. Really liked The The Empty. Overall, maybe 6.2/10. Messiah! Alcoholic!
Fun feminist dance-punk
Fun
I would describe this as "punk electronica rock". It was certainly an interesting listen. I enjoyed a few songs, but it got a little repetitive. If I'm looking for a better version of something similar, I'd look to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Overall above average, but probably won't be listening again. 3/5
This was fun music, fun performances. Lyrics were less "fun" but I think that's a big part of the point. Am I exactly the target audience or am I exactly not the target audience? Probably both, depending on the tune and the take.
going to georgia...
Frenetic, fast, and furious. This is good head bopping/a pump up album for workouts and something I'll return to. Top tracks: "Deceptacon," "Slideshow at Free University," "Let's Run," "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes"
--Deceptacon...smashing opener --Hot Topic...more of a groove this time. it's nice. well, until they start name dropping --What's Yr Take on Cassavetes...they have opinions on John Cassavetes. at least it's direct --The the Empty...angry punk. nice energy --Phanta...something a little more pop. Hanna's voice cuts right through. cool keyboards, too --Eau d'Bedroom Dancing...we slow things down. I don't mind a change of pace at this point, this is just a little boring --Let's Run...this is fun. sounds like a callback to "Deceptacon" but it's different enough to be its own thing --My My Metrocard...a fun garage bop --Friendship Station...this is surprisingly funky. could see it as a needle drop in a Tarantino movie --Slideshow at Free University...a sound collage. meh --Dude, Yr So Crazy!...this isn't really a song. more of a list of quotes by people that would call themselves hipsters --Les and Ray...I like the Casio sounds
Never heard of this before, is this some kind of feminist dance punk? Actually not too bad, some very cool tracks, but I don't like a lot of drum machine beats here, probably mid 3 stars for me.
3/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/le-tigre/le-tigre/ I get how this is an influential album (they did the listing of famous people year before James Murphy would in Losing My Edge), but it doesn’t scratch the same itch for me that its influenced artist do. Also never really like Deceptacon.
Cool.
Classic NYC alternative, could use a little more variety in th sound.
They’re ok.

Great opening track. But avtad repetitive after that.
Blander Le Tigre ofte litt sammen med The Go!
Men må nevne "Eau d'bedroom dancing" og "What's Yr Take On Cassavetes" som høydepunkter.
This is really fun.
Punk rock girls 🤘
This was weird but I’m glad we finally got a female album!!!
I love every one of these songs individually, but I tire of them fairly quickly as an album. Perfect mixtape fodder, boring album.
Outside of the hit, nothing really jumped out at me. Still a good listenable albume
Fun, dancy punk, pop, and lo-fi electronics. Mix is a little thin at times, but a decent album overall. Eau d'Bedroom Dancing is a standout.
good music, it’s a lil crazy but very original never heard something like it but probably not my style ,still added 2 songs to my library
An early 2000’s album that didn’t start well but became enjoyable
They sound a bit like the B-52’s. It was ok.
Enjoyed!
Good fun, probably have to be in the right mood but nice range of genres. Highish 3 but not quite a 4 for me.
50/50. Mood dependent.
Pretty fun
Interesting
An interesting mix of punk, grunge, and electronic elements. Overall, I'd say it's decent
Never heard of them, was better than I expected
Overall: 6/10 I've loved the song Deceptacon for the past 15 years, but for some reason I never wanted to explore any more of Le Tigre's music. Possibly because it always felt like Kathleen Hanna's side project to Bikini Kill. With that being said, there's a lot of fun to be had with this album. I love punk music that makes you want to dance. I don't think all of the songs are mind blowing, but it's a good time. Fav Song: Deceptacon
I'm starting to think that every single all female punk band will appear on this list. Not that I'm complaining. Well, I might be. Can you imagine if we had to endure every all male girl group (known colloquially (and alliteratively) as "Boy Bands")?? That's a lot of punctuation for one bone-headed statement. So what I know about music would struggle to fill about 4 paragraphs, and I'm now 339 reviews into this thing. Several format changes and about 90 0 to 1 star efforts, and I have officially run out of things to say. Was this good? Was this bad? Am I too dim to tell the difference? Some of this did feel like I missed a few days in class at free university. Thanks America for destroying that pipedream. Now I come to you as a community college dropout that still has about 10 years left on my loan writing horrible reviews of albums that I actually think are really good. Why do I think they're good? We didn't cover that in my program. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Slideshow at Free University, Dude Yr So Crazy!!, Les and Ray
Sometimes pop punk, sometimes B52’s vibes, sometimes indie/alt rock. I prefer the indie rock sounds more than anything else. Notable tracks include Deceptacon, Hot Topic, Phanta, Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing, Friendship Station, Les and Ray.
Lots of cool stuff here. 3.49
Kinda raw, pop-ey
Propuestas interesantes, tracks divertidos
I had fun listening to this short, punky album that starts with such a bang. Deceptacon is the best, and by far most popularly known song, I also enjoyed Hot Topic. The instrumentation is completely unique, and the style is really consistent throughout the album. However, at times I found some of the tracks repetitive and overall I feel like the album isn't long or complicated enough to be more than 3/5.
High energy entertaining album Standout songs: Deceptacon My my metro card
This album was just okay for me.
An interesting one.
It was ok , couple of decent songs but not my sorta thing
More alternative, this time with an electronic tinge. It starts off strong but the quality across the album ends up being pretty inconsistent. Still enjoyed it, more my type of music, but lots of short gimmicky songs, need 1 or 2 more big hitters.
***An ok, fun album. Easy listening.
