Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Hated 80% of what they were doing. Bad vocals, repetitive, cringe shoehorned politics. Yet, I listened all the way through did sort of like the vibe overall.
Did indie music atrophy in about 1995? It’s not horrible but I’m not getting anything I can’t get out of ‘seether’ or Love. Edgily boring and more hip than the before shot in a weight watchers commercial yet not terribly interesting. 2.5 (rounded up to 3)
I'm kind of shocked that there isn't anything by Bikini Kill on the 1001 albums list. I mean, they are abrasive and difficult sounding, with angry yelled political lyrics, but given the seeming million hardcore albums on the list that fit that description, why is the most important band from the Riot Grrl scene neglected? Too feminist, perhaps? Or am I being too cynical? Anyway, Kathleen Hanna, frontperson and leading light of Bikini Kill, followed up that band with a largely forgotten solo album, and then formed Le Tigre. And this is their first record, recorded on the cheap for a tiny independent feminist record label. The mission statement is there in the first song: "Wanna disco?/ Wanna see me disco?/ Let me hear you depoliticize my rhyme" This is feminist punk wrapped in a danceable pop format. This hearkens back to the punk ideal of barely being able to play your instruments (bad guitar, bad bass, augmented with basic drum machines and some samples), influenced by 60s pop (who took the bomp, indeed?), hip hop, punk rock , surf, etc, but simplified down to a basic core. There are unabashed hooks across the album, and some catchy songs. The hook from Deceptacon is sampled in the Sound Opinions podcast opening sting, alongside other iconic riffs, Hot Topic and My Metrocard are my favourite songs on the album. The whole thing is amateurish and badly recorded, and pretty simple, but it's fun and energetic and political and funny. It's unpretentious fun, made for a small audience (I mean, really, it came out on the Mr Lady record label. This was a small, independent release, with little expectations of being big. It has had a subsequent life, that I suspect nobody really foresaw). I dig it. I don't want to be part of your revolution if I can't dance.
Fun pop punk. Definitely understand the cultural significance. Opener is excellent, modern sound. Ends up a 3.6 I think
Well that was… unexpected. Didn’t hate it but couldn’t listen to the whole thing.
3.5
немного слишком панк
Snotty playground vocals usually grate with me, but strong hooks, filthy murk, and the otherwise general heaviness of the mix work well with it. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Peter Hook’s bass ghost dominates many of the best songs.
forgot I owned this, I guess I liked it when it came out. kinda punky and fun but sounds a bit like a kids daycare chorus
It wasn’t a life changing album but it was fun for what it was. The singer wasn’t the best but the other elements of the band were dope. If you listen to bands in this genre and expect the Beatles, Pink Floyd, or the doors you miss the point of the tunes.
Pretty fun album! Super earwormy and lots of fun little diddies in there. 6/10
Interesting. Some generic fuzzbox level pop punk but also some more interesting tunes
Una mezcla interesante de sonidos y letras, no sabría en que género clasificarlo
Crashing, electronics, never particularly crashing electronics. Bikini is audible at first then fades; Le Tigre is perfectly capable itself. Many events, serially. A shock to the system and not a blanket.
Not my favorite album of all time, but definitely some creative elements here.
I liked this more than I expected to.
un album fun. whats yr take on Cassavates aurai pu lui donner 4
I liked the B-52s but rougher and more political sound. I was recommending Deceptacon to my daughter - but she told me it has been 'tik-tokked' - sigh
Wouw..Girl power punk. Some great songs, some are just noisy and annoying
po pireeee
Weird rock. Feels like punk French or something
Day 2 Deceptacon - 9/10 - I'm pretty sure I've heard this one before from TikTok. I actually like this trend that I've had today and yesterday where I know one song and the rest are completely new to me. This song is cool and a good show of what I've come to associate this band with by the end of the album without going as off the rails as some of the others do. Hot Topic - 7/10 What's Yr Take On Cassavetes - 4/10 - If Deceptacon was the band doing too much (good ending), this is the band doing too much (bad ending). It still doesn't fall under 4 for me though as the sound of the band is there, it's just too much happening. The The Empty - 5/10 - it honestly reminds me of a band playing in a garage in a movie but not in a good way. Not terrible, I just know they can do better. Phanta - 7/10 - cool Eau d'Bedroom Dancing - 6/10 - the sound isn't bad but again it feels clustered with seemingly random sounds thrown in Let's Run - 8/10 - feels a bit like the first song but with more random sounds thrown in My My Metrocard - 7/10 Friendship Situation - 6/10 Sideshow at Free University - 6/10 Dude, Yr So Crazy - 8/10 Les and Ray - 8/10 - weirdly good which isn't irregular from how the other good songs feel but this one is especially weird Overall: The bands sound seems like an attempt at throwing things at the wall until they work and it works more often than not. 81/120 or 68%
Super artsy and unique! I'd love to say that I was into it and understood it, but it just wasn't really something that appealed to me on my first listen through. Maybe it's just one of those things that takes a lot of time to truly appreciate, kinda like Connan Mockasin for me.
I surprisingly didn't hate this album. This is the first punk album I listened to and didn't think was too bad. It's still not an album I would listen to normally, but it was decent. 2.5/5 Favorite song: Eau D' Bedroom Dancing Worst song: Dude Yr So Crazy!!
Some late nineties pop electronica. It's better than I thought it would be. I'm not sure I can listen to the singer for very long, but once through the album was good.
Love the general sound but no individual song stood out as exceptional to me.
Finished LE TIGRE Maybe this is me being old, but listening to this album was a little too much for me, even at just 30 minutes or so long. There's so much monotonous music and yelling. I get why it's an important album in the Riot Grrrl sense and also in a queer feminist sense. I did come away with faves. I had heard and enjoyed "Deceptacon" before, though in the context of the whole album, it falls into the yelling category. I liked "Phanta," "Eau D'bedroom Dancing," and "Dude Yr so Crazy!!". The latter two were slower, and "Dude" was mostly instrumental.
pop punk, some tracks are fun but repetitive and annoying vocals
Hi, we can't decide if we're the B-52's or The Slits or even how we feel about John Cassavetes. But we're a really good time.
A few pickles were tickled. Some nostalgic numbers and some crud. Didn't blow my socks off but they're loose.
One of those albums I’m surprised I like. Late 90’s pop punk? Except it has more in common with The Bangles & the B-52s, artistically speaking? Maybe that’s not too much of a stretch (Edit: it’s called “riot grrl” apparently) Fuck Giuliani, indeed HL: Deceptacon, Phanta, Hot Topic, Les and Ray January 17, 2023
This was a very interesting album, felt like it was ahead of its time but also right on time. Capturing the angst of that time period. And I feel like these songs have been used on some indie movie soundtracks. Deception and Cassavetes were great.
Opens with a glorious punk rock sounds. There is influences from 60s Motown, hip hop, electronica as well. Sharp lyrics, a few less than stellar fillers but overall inventive and uplifting.
Pretty good. Not really my style overall but there were a few songs that were catchy and interesting. Was thinking this sounds a lot like Bikini Kill in parts and then found out that Kathleen Hanna is in this so duh. 3.5 stars
eh
Just some girls rocking off… you love to see it
The right album to have some fun with and definitely a solid project.
Ärtigt och friskt men inte riktigt min kopp te, varken då eller nu.
Wasn’t too sure how I felt about this one but it was alright to listen to so 3*
Quite liked it actually. Started well... Drifted a bit so only a 3.
Nice. Deceptacon - great riff!
Interesting themes heavy guitar and blend of punk and electro well done
One or two cool songs not too interested
This is fun. And “Fuck Giuliani” is truly a timeless message.
This sits somwhere between annoying unique and fun unique and I am not quite sure on which side.
Can't give it any lower or I'll might look misogynist :)
This was fun, some decent songs, some duds, some kind of both (a song about opinions on Cassavetes is ridiculous and dumb, but also very funny)
Good. Listen again when not working
It's alright, old-school feminist stuff has a kind of charm to it. Some of the songs I really enjoyed, but some sounded kind of obnoxious to me.
Pretty cool. I was surprised by this one. Quirky rock chicks
Dumb fun
Not bad but not great.. I rather just listen to Sleater-Kinney instead.
Deceptacon is class, there were some other decent bits and pieces in the rest of the album but it largely never reaches the same heights
Nice energy, I fuck with the riot grrrl genre. Having said that, I don't know if I liked all the songs on here. Some felt forgettable. Despite the quirkiness and originality, I can't see myself revisiting this one often. I should relisten to see if I change my mind though. Also for a band with a french name, they should've sung in french for at least one song. fave: what's yr take on cassevetes?
I guess this is post-riot grrrl....thought it was going to be shouty political throw away stuff but there is some guile and some banging tunes. Strong 3
Bubble gum garage punk, with elements of electronica. At its best, it's fairly good, but it occasionally dips into deconstructionist drivel. Feels like a sophomoric effort from a band that probably could be and sound better.
Just nuts...all attitude, but in a good way. 3/5
just average
This album should be right up my alley - angsty, guitar-heavy, '90s music. I feel conflicted about this though. Some songs do sound cool like Friendship Station, Let's Run and Hot Topic, but a lot of this sounds like teenagers yelling and making noise. I feel like an old woman looking out my window with my fingers in my ears, wondering where that loud music is coming from. Get off my lawn, kids!!!
A band or album Iv never heard of, really enjoyed this good punk/new wave album.
Shades of a stripped-down Debbie Harry, with a slight touch of punk.
Lends some nice variety to this list. I am going to give this a "3, belongs, even if maybe not my style" but the more I think about their lyrics the more I like them. This strikes me more as an art/commentary project than a musical album.
Turn of the millennium feminist futurepunk. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: My My Metrocard Date listened: 26/09/22
есть хиты, но мне не понравилось… может это под определенное агрессивное настроение
Very meh album. I thinks its good just nothing special. "Phanta" was probably my favorite track. "Deceptacon" is also a good track.
Punky vibe. But also a 90s vibe. It was ok, didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Best track was slideshow.
I wish I liked it more. It's just not my taste. but it did make me think about the important of playfulness in music.
I enjoyed the songs with the go-gos vibe.
Had no idea what to expect with this one, but if I hadn't looked at its release date beforehand, I suspect I would have mistaken it for a punk and/or new wave album from the late-'80s (at least until they started singing about Rudy Giuliani, anyway). The first track, "Deceptacon," knocked me on my ass. The instrumentation is pretty simple (which can be said about the majority of the album), but Kathleen Hanna's vocals are raw and forceful and just about perfect. It's easily my favorite track on the album, which, sadly, isn't as consistent as I'd hoped it would be. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed "The The Empty" and "Let's Run," and "Friendship Station" ain't bad either (it's got a great beat). One thing's for sure: after enjoying Hanna's vocals so much I'm definitely going to give Bikini Kill a go, who I've heard of but never gotten around to checking out.
I was really diggin' the music, but the vocals grated on my nerves most of the time.
Apart, niet altijd veel van de tekst begrepen
Some strong tracks. Some less so.
A truly uncaring, rough-around-the-edges LP that keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek for the whole runtime. Not every track lands (if you don't like the vocals/hook that's all you have to run with for the 2-3 minutes each song runs), but those that do have such a fun, careless swagger about them that it's hard not to smile.
Album gets way better near the end. Solid working background music when not having to think too much.
Gran pop. No los conocía, Me gusto
The album was ok. I was not familiar with the band or any of the songs. The music is hard to describe as it is electronic music nor is it really pop music. It is a short album that was very helpful. It is better than a two but not really a three. I will round up.
Sounds like cat fighting. But listenable music
I mean it’s all right
Some good stuff if a little overly shouty for a full album
It's interesting. Reminds me a lot of Kate Pierson and the B52s, with a political slant.
Adventurous, lo-fi, experimental. Has some indie pop punk sensibilities and then it is just stretched in some different directions. I thought Cassavetes was a bit too on the nose and Yr So Crazy probably doesn't need a lot of repeats, but overall pretty cool album.
J’qi bien aime, hard rock avecde bon riff et une bonne chanteuse. Ca sonne bien et ca detonne de certain album rock sur la liste. 3.75
nice
Solid 3. Most of it was fun and high energy, but it got a little lame for me at times.
No los conocía, o eso creo, pero empieza muy bien. Hitazo ese "Deceptacon", sigue con "Hot topic" y luego también me gustó "Friendship Station". Divertido se merece ser recordado.
Couple of good songs.
My first reaction was that this band, who sounds like they were doing ’78 in ’98, were getting the nod from 1001 because they were an all-girl band and there were so few of those around who weren't pre-fabricated, made for MTV types. But I found them amusing with the the politicized & funny lyrics, combined with a sound that is sometimes punky, sometimes doo-woppy, often relying on low-fi synths and the occasional screaming. Certainly more varied and listenable than The Slits.
This album by a bunch of Riot Grrls is pretty cool. It pre dates another feminist band that I really love- Electrelane but they can both rock out real good. It starts off with a real bang with Deceptacon but lags a bit after that but I did enjoy their witty lyrics and social commentary.
This is fun, energetic, little bit of a slick punk vibe. Le Tigre could sound like a hundred other bands, but it's the strident lyrics that really makes them stand out. A little goes a long way though. Fave Songs: Deceptacon, Eau d'Bedroom Dancing, Friendship Station, Phanta, Slideshow at Free University
first listen Riot Grrrl 90s punk vibes
Kicked off with highly interesting sounds, but it was later lost. Liked the grunginess, but it didn't particularly stick with me. Highlight: Deceptacon
Nowoczesne i nieoczywiste, ale jednocześnie nieprzesadzone do granic możliwości.
No major opinions on this one - some of them were quite fun but it didn't stand out as anything special
Don't think I've heard this group before, despite Deceptacon having >100 million Spotify streams. Initially words like 'pretentious' and 'annoying' came to mind, but then I got over it and now I'm leaning towards 'inventive' and 'fun' instead.
Good Riot Grrrls
I love the way this record sounds. You know - like the end of the 90s. It sorta hints that the garage/post-punk revival of the 00s was just around the corner, waiting to rescue discerning listeners (shines fingernails on shirt) from Korn, Creed, Staind, Cold, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, etc. That's cool. But it's the timing of this record that is key for me. It predates bands that got more credit (and were male-fronted, except Yeah Yeah Yeahs) for doing something similar just a couple years later. I also like that this record blends some non-garage elements (subtle electronics and glitchy samples). Definitely adding this artist in Spotify.
I’m a sucker for female punk, so I really dig this. I was a tad annoyed that the vocal are so far off in the background, but I also think her voice would have gotten to me of it were any louder - so, nicely done I guess.
funky and political
Loved it! 3.5 of 5. The album starts out strong with four really great songs. The rest are pretty good too. Standouts: Hot Topic, What's Yr Take on Cassavetes, Deceptacon, The The Empty, My My Metrocard, Phanta, Friendship Station Left me wanting more.
The music is "indie" and experimental - fun alternative indie-rock. The vocals switch between youthful arthouse to irritating shouty and whiney punk/art-school pretentious. It is a knowingly art-school album. Definitely not born of "kids making music for fun", but students making music as a vehicle for their arthouse/activist pretext. Still, it's a good listen with the guitars and synths and drum machines mixed up together. I even began to find the vocals acceptable by the end
Its actually not bad, first song is the best, the album is a little all over the place and my first impressions were that the vocals were going to annoy me. I mean they did, but not enough to stop me listening.
Playful and self-deprecating, despite the earnestness of the project.
Usually I'm all in on these all-female punk/riot grrrl bands but there were points that got a little grating and repetitive. Not terrible, but there's better riot grrrl music out there.
Not my kind of thing, but probably not intended to be. As Scroobius Pip says "You don't have to like everything, and not everything is meant for you to like!" Some interesting ideas, musically and lyrically, but feels a bit unfinished. Not terrible, but not great. The kind of songs you would hear on BBC 6music, and then something better would come along.
Pretty neat, electronics and dance mixed with riot grrl punk. Some really good dark ambient tracks at the end.
I don't have any strong feelings about this album either way. I felt more positive than negative about it, though. I'd probably give it another listen at some point. It's decent.
Loud, grating, but enjoyed the beat.
Solid
It's been a while since I've listened to this album. It's catchy, upbeat, fun, a little punk and a little electronic. All in all good and fun album.
I appreciate the sound and the attitude.
Just ok.
Assez éclectique
Couple of decent tracks, but pretty one-dimensional.
Not too bad. Some good tunes worth another listen.
Fun and experimental - some tracks at the start are a little basic though
Fun album. Some catchy songs. 7/10
Nice female fronted punk. Reminds me of a slightly more modern Souxsie and the Banshees
Kinda sweet like the great girl bands of the 80s like the Bagles and the GoGos, but with a sailor language variant
Disc divertit, fresc, reivindicatiu, de vegades iconoclasta, presoner del seu temps, però que continua tenint el seu punt en temes com 'Deceptacon', 'Eau d'Bedroom Dancing' o la divertida 'What's Yr Take on Cassavetes'. Et torna a 1999 i et fa moure els peus, i el cap... poc més es pot demanar
strong opening, really liked the first track but, wasn't really keen on the follow-ups, it wasn't bad, but it didn't really add anything else.
6/10
I’d probably really have liked this back in Sonic Youth days. 3.
Liked it fine, would've probably liked it more at the time
I know of Le Tigre through Kathleen Hanna/Bikini Kill as well as the Nofx connection in Deceptacon. I've never really listened though. Not too bad.
5/10 had a couple good tracks and interesting ideas (deceptacon is great) but overall not a great listen
Hippy punk chicks are crazy, man
Not my kind of thing, but probably not meant to be. Some interesting ideas, musically and lyrically, but feels a bit unfinished. Not terrible, but not great. The ind of songs you would hear on BBC 6music, and then something better would come along.
Hann inte lyssna inte jättemycket men sånt här gillar jag
OK
Overall not a fan of it but that is personal preference. Not my type of music except for eau d'bedroom dancing, was quite nice, along with phanta and deceptacon. Rest were ok but not for me
Fun album, good energy. I kinda lost interest about 2/3 of the way through but overall enjoyed it!
Hämmentävä levy ja täysin uusi tuttavuus. Paikoitellen ihan vekkulia menoa ja uppoutu täysillä musaan sisään. Loppua kohti tunnelma lässähti
Poppier than I expected
Not my favorite
Thought this was a pretty good punk album.
Definitely a place in history for this record.
I really enjoyed this album. Very fun punk album.
nice and energetic
Pop punk birds
Lots of screaming but not bad.
Really fun album, loved the punk rock style and lyrics!
I liked how tight this pop punk, electroclash album was. It's production masks how crazy political it is but it quickly comes to the forefront as you listen to it more. It's still very fun though, just never hits that exact spark that would fuel it into the pop punk stuff I've always loved.
very enjoyable, very indie sound, maybe kinda like Sleater Kinney?... Would listen again.
Deceptacon is a very strong opener for a little album. And while this whole thing didn't keep me all wrapped up the whole time, it reminded me of the good indie albums of the 90s, the stuff that did what it wanted. I'd probably check this album out again and put Deceptacon on a few mixes.
First listen and I have no prior knowledge of this band or their music. Le Tigre has some elements that remind me of other things (¿from the 90s?) that I have listened to, but I'm not quite sure what. ¿Luscious Jackson? ¿Veruca Salt? ¿Utah Phillips? The album was fine.
On the whole pretty enjoyable and good fun.
Deceptacon was my favorite!
The driving girls band rock.
Mostly here for the NOFX diss track. Not bad
Du rock électronique. Du genre de Depeche Mode en moins bon
1) Deceptacon 4* 2) Hot Topic 3* 3) What's YR Take On Cassavetes? 3* 4) The The Empty 4* 5) Phanta 3* 6) Eau D' Bedroom Dancing 3* 7) Let's Run 4* 8) My My Metrocard 4* 9) Friendship Station 3* 10) Slideshow At Free University 3* 11) Dude Yr So Crazy!! 3* 12) Les and Ray 3*
Pretty good. Note to bring back the alesis some day
interesting blend of that late 90s/early 00s electronica/sampled and vaguely subversive punk. There are definitely better examples of both, but it's not a bad album. Slideshow at Free University was probably my favorite. it was also instrumental/largely sampled which says something probably
- feminism - punk? - lyrics are more important than music
Electro punk. Best Tracks: Deceptacon, Hot Topic, Let's Run
quite interesting
Good vocals. Bit of a mix of rather strong songs (Deceptacon, What's Yr Take on Cassavetes, The the Empty, etc) and some boring ones I'd like to cut that remind me of the pop punk melodies I'd rather forget (Hot Topic, Phanta, etc). Sounds weirdly crowdpleasing for something attacking social norms, but I didn't have a bad time.
deceptacon slaps
Sell-out hypocrites who knew the right people in NY. Later songs on album not very good. But, maybe the closest thing to “punk” on this list for this time near the turn of the millennium.
Estilo más cercano al rock para una banda con una voz muy poderosa y gritona femenina. No muy guitarrero y no excesivamente intenso. Se puede escuchar, aunque no sorprende especialmente
Very energetic and fun!
I was expecting to like this a lot more. There were some good songs, but overall it was just okay.
fast and good, but I felt it was longer tham 33 minutes and its a bit claustrophobic at times
Poppy. Fun. Girly. Some of it's a little on the nose like Hot Topic. Some's a little art pop/faux deep like Dude Yr So Crazy. The first track slaps and I guess one of these girls coined the phrase "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I like it.
No expectations before listening- I’d never heard anything of them. Enjoyed it. Sometimes came close to being too clever but overall a good listen
I found this fun, I liked that it's somewhat loose but also packs a punch.
Achei nina dms, mas tem uns fuzz legal
Nice old punk rock. Joan Jett vibes for some songs
I am not the audience for this, if I were a teen girl I’m sure I’d be all about it.
I really enjoy the instrumentals for this album, but the vocals are too weird for me. It's definitely unique, I'll give it that.
Girl band! Boogie
Good, interesting music
The riot grrrl thing kind of missed me. It’s an interesting take on punk. “What’s Yr Take On Cassavetes?” Is pretty funny. Probably won’t listen to this again, though.
It was alright, nothing too crazy
Fan of Deceptacon. The rest is lots of repetition and less substance than I expected from Bikini Kill alumnae.
I enjoyed the LoFi aesthetic but they were too poppy for my tates.
A bit annoying? Deceptacon is a classic bop though. I liked Hot Topic.
It’s ok
Not my cup of tea.
Music typically consists of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Some musical styles place special emphasis on one of these elements, neglecting one or even both of the others in the process. And then there’s Le Tigre, who, on their self-titled debut album, focus entirely on the lyrics and neglect all three elements. In other words: despite (or perhaps because of?) what I see as the three women’s understandable sense of mission, the music is simply bad, and no lyrics in the world can turn it into a good album. It’s a shame, really.
bateria programada= depressão
Kind of fun but not something I’d ever listen to, like, ever again.
This has been an interesting listen with unique vocals and I enjoyed the bass and how they put so much thought and anger into this album. However I don’t dislike it but I would rate it 2 or 3 out of 5, I wish I could rate it 2.5. The reason why is because on first listen on some of the songs there just felt like there was too much happening at once, it also felt slightly repetitive but less repetitive than the last album I listened to. I would probably rate this a 2/5 because I like some of the tracks however, it didn’t stick out to me so it’s definitely a high 2.
Vocals not really for me but some decent music in there
This was just not very enjoyable. It had some interesting ideas, but didn't land many of them.
Not good
What the hell was this?
buns but weston on the front
It's a powerful sound, with meaningful feminist lyrics and themes that resonated and still would resonate with many people. I'm glad this album was on the list, but I'm not the biggest fan of this style of music, and her voice was too much, and I got sick of it quickly. Glad I heard it, but not my thing.
late 90’s Rock n Roll w a gem last somg
Couldn't get into this one at all. I tried.
At one hand fun at the other hand the vocals can be annoying. 2,5
This is not really for me. I think some of the songs are interesting, and I like the overall tone, but didn't move me.
On paper, I should probably love this; I like a lot of Riot Grrl era bands and artists and have always enjoyed female-fronted punk and indie bands (although my favourite era for these groups is the 70s and 80s). This record however I didn't particularly enjoy. The vocals (particularly the backing/supporting vocals) started irrating me and the music was pretty basic and uncreative for large parts. Reminded me of Beat Happening. like bratty, snotty bands with attitude but this one just did not land at all. Baffled by it's inclusion on the list. Edit: just looked at the critical reception of when this was released and clearly I'm in the minority here.
Not really my thing. And interesting listen, nonetheless. I can feel how this has influenced and inspired newer indie music.
No fue para nada para mi la verdad, no lo aguanté
not good
Maybe with like 5 more listens I'll get this but for now, have to say not my thing
Silly music
Meh
Dislike
Decent riffs, bad singing. Too punk for my tastes but alright
Should try to be less whiny, it’s really annoying. On the good side some of the arrangements are quite decent.
I get the overall theme and want to love it, but I have auditory issues with frequent, high-pitched vocal/notes, and couldn't get over that issue to finish the album.
Sophie - I knew Deceptacon going in, but I think that was an anomaly for me. I want to like this album more than I do, but the style just doesn’t do it for me. The sort of screaming thing isn’t working for me. I do think they are cool though, just from a distance for me. 2/5
Not really my vibe, they grated on my ears quite a bit
3 - BAD
Didn’t really get any of it and some parts were annoying.
Favorite Song: Let's Run
Good power album. This group is a lot of fun.
Starts out okay but quickly becomes annoying and boring. 2 stars or D+.
The music was good but, the vocals sucked.
Uninteresting lo-fi punk/pop. Next.
My group mates may be higher on this than me, but I probably could have stopped at “Le Tigre is an American art punk and riot grrrl band.” And the barking in that one song upset Ruby.
It’s alright, nothing that stood out to me. 2 stars
Bien dans l’ensemble, mais pas trop ma came.
2.33
Ei pystynyt kuuntelemaan kokonaan. Arvosana niistä ekoista kappaleista joita jaksoi kuunnella. En ihan tajua tämänkään levyn tällä listalla olemista.
This was, le bad. I had hope in the first track but it quickly went downhill. The style of Eau d’bedroom Dancing reminded me vaguely of Alvvays, but not enough for me to want to like or add the song to any of my playlists.
Herky- jerky, shouty, femi-pop. S'awright.
Weird album.
Not for me.
I get what they’re going for, but it just didn’t work for me. The DIY electro punk thing has attitude for days, and I’m into the idea of it more than the actual listening experience. A lot of the songs feel like they’re built around slogans and energy first, and I kept wishing the hooks were a little stronger. There are moments that are genuinely fun, and I can totally see this being a “you had to be there” classic for some people. For me, it wore thin pretty fast.
American Feminist Post-Punk/New-Wave. Soundwise, they reminded me of the UK band Fuzzbox, but Fuzzbox were more fun.
Странный подростковый девчачий поп-рок.
Too goofy for me, i recognise a few songs and they’re okay but wouldn’t listen to them on a daily basis honestly
Well this is nothing special. A couple of good tracks, so a 2, and a lot of leech, so only a 2. X-Ray Specs are much better.
Deceptacon kennt man. Sehr repetetiv, ist nicht so meins Eau d‘ bedroom dancing fand ich noch gut Slideshow at the university auch
I’ll preface this by saying that lyrics factor little in my ratings. It appears this is highly regarded as an anthem for feminism, and that’s great! But musically, this is mostly bad. There are glimpses of greatness, but it’s often ruined with their avant-garde style. I think there were just two songs where I felt it wasn’t at some point ruined with something weird (“Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing” and “Les and Ray”). The songs are short, but they feel interminable. It was not to my liking. 2/5
Great length. I recognized the first song. Overall not really my thing. High 2.
I get that its a great message they are getting across with these lyrics. To me it feels like they sacrificed the quality of the music for the sake of the message though. The instruments mostly sound really good and I'm bobbing my head along. But then the singing often doesn't fit which pulls me out of that feeling. As a whole its a good punk-rock album with a message (as punk often has) that they get across very clearly.
Not sure whether I liked this or not, a fair few of the songs were a bit weird for me
i'm not sure what genre this is, but i don't think it's one i'm familiar with. one of the vocalists is trying to sing on a teaspoon of air, the arrangement is pretty minimal but the individual sounds aren't complex to fill it out, and i don't know what's going on in the lyrics i can make out.
Fun arty punk. 3 - deserves to be on this list
I quite enjoyed this album, but I don’t think I will ever listen to it again.
Maybe when I was young and this came out it would feel different to me, but now so many years later it just seems sort of lightweight.
This isn't terrible by any means, but should it really be among the 1001? I wish we could give half stars, but I have to round down.
Don’t understand why this “band” is on the list. Her voice is not good and their constant whining is over the top.
Why the whining
I applaud them trying to make statements with their music but I didn't care about anything they were singing about which kinda ruined it. Also they just did not sound very good for the first half, I get that that's intentional but oof it's not fun.
really not sure where to land with them. are they trying to be a punk group? then why use (what sounds like) electronic drums? I just can't take the vocals seriously with either screeching or sing-songy whining. the songs are short, so that is a positive.
Overall annoying. Can't take those yelling vocals.
100/1001 First listen. It’s pretty rockin’. There’s some interesting things going on throughout. Each song has something unique. I don’t think I need any more of this though. 4/10
Det holder ikke å være råkule. Man må lære seg å lage låter også…
Not my weird
Meh
Just not my thing.
thought this was a trip hop album, it is a punk and feminist rock oriented album. Not the worse, but not my type of music. The music did go by quick which was nice though!
Meh. Den här typen av sång gör nästan ont. Sabbar allt tyvärr. Rätt jobbigt att lyssna på. Det är i grunden helt ok, men framförandet (sången primärt) blir för mycket åt fel håll, helheten dras ner.
Started off well enough, then kinda disappeared up it's own arse.
4/10 - kicks off with its best song and really downhill from there
This isn’t really my genre and I played it initially in a sunny afternoon and was ready to dismiss , I suck through and eventually it got me moving a bit
Aggressively not pleasant.
If The Killers and The Go-Gos had a baby, it'd be Le Tigre. It should be amazing. Yet... somehow it just turns out to be less than it should be. An unfortunately forgettable album.
I remember hearing the first track in a Norwegian movie Reprise. I loved it, we played it to death while partying in high school. Now, 15 years later I still enjoy it but much less and the rest of the album annoys me. There were some interesting ideas but its just too much noise and I'm tired I don't sleep - not because I still party but because my newborn keeps me up at night. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm too old for this shit.
not my kind of music, dnf listen to the whole album
This is synth-pop masquerading as punk that takes itself far too seriously. They try a little too hard to mesh styles instead of writing a melody and concentrating on making good songs. It consistently devolves into an "artistic" statement at the expense of the quality of their art.
Mostly basic. I'm glad they have a message and all, but spend a bit on singing lessons, ok? Best songs are the one where the lead singer doesn't. "Slideshow At Free University" "Dude Yr So Crazy!!" and I guess "Phanta" are the best bits. I wouldn't listen to this again and I'm not sure why I was told I should in the first place. Calling it a 2.
It was ever so slightly ok. But not much. Bit try hard
I did not lile this
May have been the day for me but found it dry and forgettable.
This was more about the energy than the music. That's fine.
First song is a baaaanger
Ok when that whole disco punk thing happened late nineties early oughts this was one of them. It’s an ok example of the genre with riot grrl vibes. Not particularly memorable or outstanding. Let’s say two stars.
it seemed like a couple of the songs were just lists of things.
Was there a “bad early 80s new wave” revival that I missed; because I imagine these guys would have been at the forefront.
34 minutes of New Wave, Femme pop-punk. There was a lot of charm, but the overall album was hard to listen to.
Don’t care for it. Didn’t engage me and sounded lazy.
Le meh
it was ok
This gives me headaches.
The Good: We finally get a French band! The Bad: It’s a lie… The Ugly: please don’t make me say it… Yeah, that was grt if Yr into that stfffff. I will hand it to the ladies, some of the tunes were catchy, and are worth a second listen… but only for a second, and then you want to head on off to a different place. Not my cup of tea, though I can understand that there are others who really enjoyed it… 2* because ...
Enjoyed it while it was on but quickly forgotten afterwards and unlikely to go back to it.
Ok, but eminently forgettable
Deceptacon and My My Metrocard are the standout tracks of this album. The rest just felt too repetitive in my opinion. Les and Ray was alright too.
I haven't liked that album much. It had different sounds, but many times they didn't work that well. It has a nice sound, even though it's not what I like at all. But some songs were good. It's just not what I actually would want to listen to.
Highlights: Decepticon, Hot Topic. In a nutshell: riot grrrrrl power. Bands like Le Tigre are a sonic encapsulation of a movement. A middle finger to misogyny and boy bands. Self agency. DIY culture. It’s not going to be everyone’s thing. I didn’t mind it Overall: 4/10
Here's a forgettable review for a forgettable album. The proto-pop-punkish first half didn't do anything for me. I'd probably dig the lyrics, but the vocals put me off. But then the latter half takes a hit of hash, gives the vocals a break, and falls into some nice late 90s downtempo grooves, which I could see slotting in a playlist with UNKLE and Moby. But I probably won't.
No thank you. This is not for me I'm any way
I didn’t do my usual dive into the lyrics but it was fun and upbeat but no song really stuck out to me. I wouldn’t listen again probably.
The bars way too loud but it’s half full and no one seems to notice. A synth glitch duo is playing poorly on the stage. They stand about four inches higher than the audience. The duo can count all four people dancing. They’ll count it as a success. A woman with Doc Marten boots and red sunglasses stands on her toes to talk to her taller male companion. He’s got an acoustic guitar slung over his back so everyone will know he played earlier. “Hey I’m heading out, Brody’s having a thing and he’s right off of 4th. I’ll link up with you later.” “Ok. We’re going to The Saddle after this so maybe see you then?” “Ugh that place sucks. I think Avalon’s bartending tonight though so I’ll come for a martini.” Interior, Brody’s bathroom: *snifffffff* Our heroine adjusts her glasses. “Fuck! Whoo. Cool if i smoke in here?” She lights her cigarette before Brody has a chance to answer. She takes a drag and passes it to her nasal neighbor. “You didn’t miss much. Pete played his usual set which was, well, Pete. Which is good! And I don’t mean that in a ‘he’s my friend so I have to think it’s good’ but ‘he’s objectively talented and his songs are solid even if he’s been playing the same set for the last three years.’ *sniff* A mustachioed figure in a blue paisley shirt wipes his nose and passes back the stogie. His top four buttons are undone to expose a slightly indented sternum. “Well Pete is Pete. Which is great!” A credit card clacks against an unseen mirror. “Yeah he’s great! *sniff* but I had to get out of there before Tesseracrt started rocking too hard.” “O not those two! *sniff* those two are the worst. Good call on leaving. I’m glad you were able to come by! I’m itching to leave but what kind of host would I be if I left my guests? Shit. It’d be like an episode of… god what’s it called… fuckin Step by Family?” “Family matters?” “No not Urkle! Fuck uuhhh Step by Step? Fuck I don’t know. It’s that one ABC show where the guy has the birthday party and is all caught up on having this big party but his best friends planned him a surprise party that he doesn’t go to and like his party is a total hit but he doesn’t care because his best friends aren’t there so he ends up just moping around and then like his crush talks to him and he gets that epinonmysyyss….?” “Epiphany?” “There it is! He has an epiphany and he leaves the party and goes to hang out *knock knock* OCCUPIED! with his friends in like a park or basement or someThing. You know what I’m talking about?” “Yeah I thi—-“ “FUCK man a fuckin park hang sounds so fucking good now. I could really go for some Monkey Bars. I was so good at Monkey Bars back at Clifton. I was like the BEST fourth grader at monkey bars. This place doesn’t even have a fucking basement. Fuck! This world is just so fuckin full of options. Pearls and oysters and all that. Anyway, where are you headed?” “Ugh Pete wants to go to The Saddle but I think I’d rather go to Devin’s Backyard.” “NOW WERE TALKING! A backyard! Devin Townsend or Devon Chang!” “O shit, neither of those. The place is called Devin’s Garage.” “Wait I thought it was Backyard?” “O fuck I don’t remember. Shit I haven’t talked to Chang in a second. Id text him but this phones out of minutes.” Her face briefly glows blue to confirm her minute deficiency. She snaps it shut and puts it back in her tote bag. “That blows! Well let me know how Devin’s Living Room is.” “Garage. Definitely Garage….I think. *snnnnifff* Thanks for having me Brody. Cappuccinos tomorrow?” *SNNNNIFFFF DNIFF SNIFF* “Yeah. Sounds good. She takes a drag off her cigarette and throws it in the open toilet. “There’s a new place on 7th I’ve been wanting to try. Let’s say 10?” “Yeah that works. Later.” She rubs her pinky into her gums and straightens up her red leather jacket. The door swings open and noise comes pouring in. Brody is popular. She narrowly dodges a very large man in a New York Mets jersey coughing his beer out on to a group of onlookers. “FUCK MAN! Sjronkdoj you can’t make me laugh in the middle of it! That’s not fair” “Doesn’t matter Deezee, fuckin pay up.” She’s able to slide her shoulder past the stumbling Deezer and slip out the door. She reaches into her tote bag and pulls out her Sony Walkman. The headphones feel warm against the night chill and she’s grateful. Chipmunks warble in her ears for a few seconds. She clicks the tape player and the streets of Alphabet City are silent for a moment. Click. “WHO TOOK THE BOMP?” - That about sums up this album.
It’s ok poppy and punky, but a bit eh
Af en toe is de stem van de zangeresvwel echt om te huilen, maar de paar keer dat het iets aardigs produceert is het best oke.
Just more Riot Grrrl music. With slightly more electronic elements to it
I like the b-52s and I like The go team!, and this kind of felt like a mix but it wasn't landing for me. Maybe I just wasn't made in the mood.
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Wasn't really a fan. Seemed edgy for the sake of being edgy. To be honest though, I barely got in two listens throughout the day and so maybe I just didn't give this enough time.
Mid
only okay
Not a fan
I thought this was gonna be some french stuff but it was punk stuff. Not bad. 2.5 goin down.
2.0 - Weak
Girls who shout out random things and call it music get benched to never be heard from again. The first 30 seconds is all you need to hear.
Maybe "Deceptacon" wasn't used on a Tony Hawk's pro-skater soundtrack but that's the only place it exists in my memory. This is my day 1 album. Can't lie, I thought this generator thing was pretty lame based on so many of the posts on the subreddit thinking that there is some sort of magic to the "algorithm" that literally just picks one of the albums at random unless pre-empted by the death of a particular musical artist. But I kept lurking the subreddit until I found myself commenting my nostalgic feelings for particular albums and now here I am. Le Tigre was always cursory to my interests since college. I guess their album opener is the only song of theirs I had heard (in Joachim Trier’s Reprise). The rest of the album is fine. I was a little surprised by the plunderphonics of "Slideshow At Free University", otherwise nothing sparked my interest. Caught up with the Yea Right! part directed by Spike Jonze. Street skating is so damn beautiful. Necessary declaimer: I'm not much for lyrics so there may be a depth to the feminist/political lyrics that I could grow to appreciate if I payed more attention to them. EDIT: While listening to my day 2 album, NIN's Downward Spiral I got a Nissan ad with a "Decepticon" ripoff by some awful band named the Smocks. The song is such a ripoff that they shouldn't get a dime off of it.
Like the 1st song, but down hill from there. Same production level as that "My United States of Whatever" song and lyrics not much better. Had the feel of someone's first attempt to wrote and record songs in their bedroom
Ok 2/5
Love the sample on phanta, but other than that it was meh and very short 2/5
Sounded a little like Chappell Roan and then not that great
This is kind of annoying
