Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Le Tigre’s debut album is a blast — short, sharp, and full of energy. ‘Deceptacon’ remains the absolute standout, a track that bursts with attitude and immediacy. The rest of the album, while consistently engaging, never quite matches that explosive opener. Still, it’s a fun time overall.
Cool message and cool music. It is quite an interesting style with many 90s influences but also seems timeless. The tone of the singing is so unique especially coupled with the guitar riffs. The yelling can be a bit annoying at parts but works in some.
Surprisingly good / fun / interesting. Sounds like a few different eras all in one. Girl punk at its best.
3/5
This was fine
It's like an 80s girl band ... but in 1999
3.2/first song is a banger the rest not so much
I like it - it’s pretty cool, so I will definitely listen to this again
Good fast paced pop rock.
I want to start this review with some background info and then a question. So, the band behind this album, Le Tigre, was very much so a feminist band. Obviously, none of the band's members are men, so you're not really getting pro-man songs here. This is made more obvious when you know the woman behind the whole operation, Kathleen Hanna, who had already made a name for herself in the music world through her prior band, Bikini Kill. This brings me to my question. Why is there not a Bikini Kill album on this list? They were THE defining riot grrrl band! How are they not here? Whatever. At least Le Tigre is good. I liked this album. It's not great or anything, but it's certainly enjoyable. The style is fierce and fun but not super repetitive. The singing isn't my favorite, but not bad either. The songs are solid. "Deceptacon" is probably the highlight, but others make for good listens. The writing is mostly good, with a solid amount of politics included for good measure. How am I supposed to dislike an album that calls Rudy Giulani a fucking jerk? They're right! I don't really see myself going back to this very much in the future, but I'd say I'm glad I listened to it. It's kind of around DEVO territory for me, so I'll give it the same score that I gave to them, that being a high 3/5.
Pretty good stuff. I like the complexity to the songwriting.
3.5 Fun, Will listen to again
*Le Tigre’s* self-titled album is a lively mix of pop and punk energy. I didn’t mind it at all — some tracks are surprisingly catchy, with bold, fun beats and sharp attitude. It’s quirky, energetic, and definitely worth a listen.
Fun album but got a little stale for me by the end. Favorite track was Deceptacon for me.
Not what I had on my head as Le Tigre. Liked the punky sound. Dreading to find out they’ve done an advert for Matalan. 3.5 rounded down
I'm stumped on what to expect from this album when looking at the cover. Looks to be an indie act likely erring on the side of twee pop. It probably has a bossa nova influence if I'm to really go off the deep end with my predictions. I've never heard of this band, so I guess I've nothing more to do than crack this album open. Punk. Riot grrrl. Hmm. I was right somewhere along the line, wasn't I? This album is a good bit of fun - it's been waaaaaaaay too long since I last heard something which was within my microhemisphere of interest. In doing a cursory search for this album on the Internet, I uncovered an article mentioning this album in comparison to The Dismemberment Plan's Emergency & I, which makes great deal of sense. Both albums have the same unhinged atmosphere and strange instrumentals. I should give this album another go sometime down the road - Emergency & I bugged the hell out of me the same way this album did, though it was also the first album I grew to truly appreciate. "Deceptacon" is a good opener. I'm a fan of those grungy, muffled, extremely 90s guitars, and the snappy percussion gives the song a nice, weightless feel. I'm mixed on the garbled guitars that appear intermittently throughout the track, though it isn't enough to dampen my appreciation. "The the Empty" is pretty good. I enjoy the intense guitarwork and spastic vocals. "Phanta" is also a good cut. Big fan of how the guitars complement the mellow vocals during the chorus, as well as how the guitars contrast with the almost-industrial sound they adopt during the verses. "Let's Run" isn't really my thing, though it sounds like there's a morse code message hidden throughout the track, which is interesting. Always knew I should have sat down and learned morse code so I could uncover trivial details about an extreme minority of songs. "Friendship Station" is good. A very cool, sleek instrumental, and I enjoy the more relaxed vocals. Admittedly, the repetitious vocals grind my gears the longer they go on, though I shant complain. "Dude Yr so Crazy!!" is pretty cool. I like how the sound falls somewhere between relaxed and on edge. "Les and Ray" is a solid closer. Again, I appreciate the relaxed sound, and the vocal style is pretty sweet. Checking the book. A wide sampling of genres. That's about it, really. I'm not sure how distinguished this album is within the riot grrrl genre, but I quite liked this. It's pretty out there and unique, and I think riot grrrl is worthy of preservation as an interesting subgenre of punk. I cosign this inclusion.
Another fun one.
Cool
Was thinking the first half of the album is a 2 but I liked the second half more. A couple songs I might save but a few that I really wasnt a fan of.
Le Tigre is a freaking fever dream with some catchy songs. I despise the screeching vocals but thankfully not every track had those. Most did though. In spite of that I found myself enjoying the album. It's full of cool sounding music made from traditional and non-traditional instruments and it's definitely unique. Standouts were "Hot Topic," "Phanta," and "Les and Ray" It was pretty cool but I probably won't listen to this again. 3/5.
So much Scott Pilgrim vibes. Messy, all over the place. Not bad, not great, just okay.
Mhm angry electronic riot grrrl energy. Not amazing with a morning coffee and a read but generally very nice.
Alright 3/5
Good album, not really special for me but nice
Going into this, I’d never heard of Le Tigre or their self-titled debut album—so I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found was an enjoyable, if not groundbreaking, record. It’s packed with catchy, politically charged pop songs that are both fun and sharp in their messaging. Highlights for me included Eau d’Bedroom Dancing, Friendship Station, and Let’s Run—all infectious tracks with memorable hooks and lyrics. One quirky moment: the riff in Les and Ray kept reminding me of the Only Fools and Horses theme tune, and once I noticed it, I couldn’t un-hear it. Overall, I’d happily return to this album. It’s clever, catchy, and enjoyable throughout. Favourite track: Let’s Run and Friendship Station Least favourite track: Honestly, everything is worth a listen. Album artwork: A cool cover that fits the vibe.
Nice little surprise. Kind of punky. Kind of sassy. Very political. Not perfect but I’ll listen again.
Prolly not a group I'll spend a lot of time with, but I enjoyed the encounter, especially the way they are more than just a punk middle finger to whatever but show their genuine appreciation for bubble gum pop.
I’ve always been a little on the fence about this album. It doesn’t totally work for me, but when it hits, it hits big. “Deceptacon” is one of my go-to “dance in the kitchen like no one is watching” songs, and “Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing” is on my shortlist of unused songs that have not yet but will one day (mark my words) soundtrack a killer scene in some prestige TV show. The lyrics throughout the whole album are delightful too. There’s a lot to recommend, but the jangle pop doesn’t work for me on many tracks. Still, Kathleen Hanna is a goddess and four stars would be warranted for “Deceptacon” alone.
Positively surprised.
Pop/punk with a girl power message. The songs are pretty catchy and the band as a trio works well. I would listen again. It has the potential to grow on me. 3.5 if possible.
This was a fun album even if it’s one I probably wouldn’t listen to again. As someone who also hates Rudy Giuliani I really related to “My My Metrocard”.
2.5/5
Quite fun but fell apart for me a bit by the end. That first track was great. It sounded like a real mix of stuff from multiple decades.
Recognized them by the first song but not after that. Happy I listened, fun energy
Le femme punk
Such a beautiful cross section of punk rock. This album is really significant to how the sound of punk evolved into the 2000s. The lyrics are meaningful and pretty on beat for this genre. The vocals totally ruined this album for me personally though. She uses the same voice in every song and has no flexibility. 7/10
3.5 - really unique album
really like this album but it’s not that good. first song is incredible all the songs feel a little weak compared to it. it’s a shame bc i really enjoyed deceptacon
Ok
This is a fun album. It's pretty loud and the vocals can be a bit screetchy but a good listen and glad it's on the list. Had only ever heard Deceptacon before and that's a great song. 6/10 (3/5)
Pleasantly funky.
You know when something's perfect, and people say 'no notes'. Well I have no notes for this album. But not because it's perfect. Because it is extremely unnoteworthy.
Okay. Fine.
It's okay. Bit basic though. Don't think I'd listen again in any hurry. Favourite tracks: Deceptacon (for the cool guitar and 'how are you'? bit), Phanta.
The first half of this album is strong, but it starts to lag near the end. Not typically a problem, but at 34 minutes it's a surprising problem to appear.
I find the lyrics a bit cringe and the singer's voice annoying. It's fine when singing a melody but when shouting it grates a bit Really repetitive lyrics Although I love the backing music, it give me Hives vs Blondie vibes 60s throwbacks, love the tempo. My my metrocard is a good track Love the variety of music. It feels quite fun and poppy, lots of gimmicks that aren't terrible 3 or 4, can't decide This one never made it to the UK, I can kind of see why
Very DIY. Some clunkers, but some good stuff too.
Goes from good to bad in both instrumentals and vocals
I enjoyed this
This album is like the rich girl at school, who has come back from summer holidays having developed a new edgy personality. She’s confidently getting in your face, challenging you about the wrongs of the world. She raises some pretty valid points, but at the same time her dad dropped her off in a Mercedes Benz before heading to his law firm where he is a named partner.
Interesting, intense and mostly enjoyable. I’ve gotta be in the right mood for this kind of thing, but I still enjoyed it
Deceptacon was great but didn’t find myself wanting to come back to this one. Good energy and I like the spirit but just wasn’t doing much for me.
Ahhhh The Deceptacon women! Okay, let’s see what else they’ve got… I don’t know what the name is for this style (femme kitch pop/rock?!) but they have it locked. Not sure it’s an album I’d go to regularly, but for this groove and feel, it’s a winner (3.5)
Macht schon Laune. 3/5
If Wet Leg were half decent
Solid listen.
Starts to just sound like noise after a while. Not terrible, not good. Simply average. Giving an extra star because my 2 year old son loved dancing to this album
Still holds up. Sharp, bratty, and fun. For me, this is the only Le Tigre album that exists, and honestly, that’s fine.
good punk-ish album👌🏼
not too bad. I hear Go-Gos and Talking Heads. Kinda punkish, kinda popish.
It’s decent. Some songs are very good. Others not. Inventive and catchy in places. Annoying and grating in others. So 3 stars.
Alright but a little repetitive.
Riot Grrrl is a crazy genre I've never heard of, but can picture the sound already. This is pretty fun and catchy a a couple songs in. Was wondering what their problem was with the director of The Notebook and Alpha Dog but it seems like its the elder Cassavetes. This band kinda reminds me of the 5,6,7,8's in a way. Frienship Station kinda rules. Not sure I'll be back but enjoyed that for what it was.
This one started strong, digging the vibe, then it got annoying extremely fast... Regarding the 5th track, piece of advice for aspiring songwriters: find a cool motive and the repeat it monotonously and relentlessly, your audience will learn to love it... It comes back from being annoying to some degree, but overall this is middle of the road... What I like: vocals, minimalistic arrangement, it is only 34 minutes long... What I don't like: monotonous and repetitive (within songs, not in between them)
Le Tigre attacks with claws out on their debut album. Pretty great punky, poppy, Cyndi Laupy tracks with heavy influence from the Go-Go's, Joan Jett, and Sleater-Kinney. The trio's play is simply structured but they add in a layer of mixing that elevates the songs. Lyrics and titles capture the late 90's well. I particularly like "Slideshow at Free University" for showcasing the sampling/mix skills. I don't have an opinion on Cassavetes but I'll check out his movies and more albums from these cats...3.37 stars.
I had a friend in high school who was into Le Tigre but I never got around to giving them a listen. Glad to indulge in their debut album. It started on a high note with Decepticon and while it didn't quite maintain that high it was still mostly fun, mostly unique and mostly entertaining. I think the 31 minute length played into their hand because this would be best consumed in short bursts. I get the sense Le Tigre would be a blast at a live show and outdo their studio/album versions. This one is definitely based on vibes so if you aren't in the right mood I don't think this would work. 2.84 stars
I have a lot of respect for girl punk although it’s a genre I don’t listen to much myself. Reminds me of bikini kill or girl riot or similar bands (even Semi Precious Weapons even though that’s boys). Some songs I could see myself putting in a playlist and raging to, but not sure if I’d listen to the entire album again
Whoa, first time I've listened to a song on my own that popped up later on the day's album selection. (My daughter played "Deceptacon" in the car in the morning.) I like Le Tigre a lot, but this album's hit or miss. Among the cred-conscious, this will be a controversial take, but I think their major-label album (This Island) is better.
Listen man, I GET IT. Okay, maybe I don't. But I do think there should be more songs about metrocards.
A lot of breaking glass? The first song is from Invincible so of course I love, the rest of the songs didn't do it for me
For 1999 the production quality could be a bit better, but it's not a bad album at all.
Interessant aber dann doch etwas zuviel Einsatz von Synthies. So war das halt damals.
strong 7
Thoughts before listening: Kathleen Hannah's post-Bikini Kill group. This was in big in the cool kids indie rock club that I never really fit in with while I was firmly hanging with the pop punk and jamband dorks. I don't know much about this music although I feel like its Kathleen's riot grrl style punk vocals with distorted guitars and electronic beats. Something like that maybe? Review: Why does Le Tigre have 5.7 million listens on Spotify while other 90s/00s indie rock groups are dropping quickly? Did one of their songs become a Tik Tok trend or something? Anyway, this is okay. Punk rock female vocals that are more shouted than sung with poppy style music, sometimes stealing from 60s girls groups but filtered through lo-fi indie rock/garage punk distortion. The sound on some of the songs is very reminiscent of the late 90s with samples and vibes similar to what someone like Beck or the Beastie Boys was doing around the same time. 3-stars
It’s kind annoying. I didn’t hate it, and musically it was pretty decent, but the singers voice simultaneously shrill yet bland. 2.5 stars if I could.
Some great tracks, but not enough for me to come back to that often
it was okay, some songs were pretty good.
Haven't heard this album before. Enjoyed the feminist message and the instrumentals were pretty nice. Heavy without sounding heavy. Wasn't the biggest fan of the vocal timbre but that's to be expected with punk. Glad I have listened to this album but I don't think I'll come back to it any time soon. 3/5
Not bad. Some cool stuff on here. A bit chaotic in a good way.
Started out great, but didn’t keep momentum. Averaging out all the songs I thought it was a good album, and it makes me wish I was at a house party concert in 1999 instead of being in my dad’s balls, but hey what can you do.
Pretty fun and unique. This style of music just isn't really for me.
Interesting listen! Much of this album felt like it was straight from Scott Pilgrim (see: Sex Bob-ombs) in that it was a sort of riot-punk vibe. Ultimately I like the 'vibe' of much of this album, with Deceptacon being the obvious standout, but I think the overall setlist leaves a bit to be desired. Things get a little repetitive (I literally thought the album had started over at 'Let's Run)' making this a hard one for me to come back to for a full re-listen.
Weitere Titel wie „My My Metrocard“ und „What's Yr Take on Cassavetes“ setzen sich mit urbanen Themen auseinander. Insgesamt bietet Le Tigre einen Einblick in die Verbindung von Musik und politischem Ausdruck. Das Album zeigt, wie musikalische Mittel genutzt werden können, um gesellschaftliche Themen anzusprechen, ohne dabei an Eingängigkeit zu verlieren.
Silly fun. What was cassavetes anyway.
fun album - reminds me of x-ray spex 3/5 #musicsky #musicchallenge #albumsky
Meh. Like deceptacon
I started listening and thought "Wow, this is Definitely Not Bikini Kill", only to learn that this was Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill fame. At least she's consistent, I don't love riot grrrl music but I can recognize that what they're doing here is exactly what *someone* is looking for
Lots of jams in here, but also lots of filler. Rings of Sleigh Bells and other noise pop type acts that I am a fan of, but it felt like it drags in the middle. Love the Guiliani shade, though.
bopz. not my style but the album is kinda fun
This album cover *also* looks like one of my poorly rasterized middle school artworks (mixed with Spongebob). Being from the 90s, that tracks. I mostly associate Le Tigre with the alphabetically inclined hit dramas The OC and The L Word, but I never listened to them (or Bikini Kill) straight up, mainly because punk has too much yelling for me. Not my favorite genre. Lyrics are good though. And I appreciate that the songs are short. So I will round up to a 3 (although I will never listen to this again) :) Highlights: 'Hot Topic', 'What's Yr Take on Cassavetes', 'Slideshow at Free University', 'Les and Ray' (all the non-yellers!)
I was really looking forward to this album because I LOVE Deceptacon. The rest of it isn’t as good as that song though
Yeah this is pretty interesting. Kind of electronic punk. There's some really cool songs here it just kinda sounds the same at parts
Great blend of 60s pop, 70s punk, 90s girl rock. None of those things are superbly done, but they all come together to make a really good album. The first song that Spotify played when the album was over was Hole “Violet” and it made me think that if Le Tigre had that level of production that they probably could’ve been a huge success. 6.8/10 #41/1001
6/10
There's some pretty fun songs but several are a bit annoying, I could see why it's on the list though.
deceptacon is a classic and the rest of the songs sounds vaguely like it
Super original, sometimes silly while also feeling very true to the band and honest. I appreciated the spoken word and randomness on many songs.
3+
The first song is the best of this album all the rest are subpar
t's kind of fun, but the latter half of the album is so boring that it drags on far too much.
emblematic of a scene, pretty good the whole way through, excellent as an album experience
It's not Bikini Kill but it's fun
That was a fun album. I really liked the energy and vibe. I wasn't able to lock into the lyrics that much.
90's girl punkish rock sound. Not sure if it qualifies as riot grrl. But it was fun energy. I like that style and while a lot doesn't stick with me, I could have the album in my driving cd rotation for awhile
Not particularly good, not bad. Just not quite for me.
Holy shit. I forgot all about this album. First song is one I used to listen to all the time. Definitely not really a GREAT album. But still worth a listen. 3/5
Salvei basicamente todas as músicas. Curti demais a "Dude Yr So Crazy!!"... Uma das melhores musicas que descobri ate agora através desse projeto. Aprecio demais que elas não se escondem atras de uma camada covarde de ironia ou sarcasmo. O álbum inteiro parece ser bem sincero. 3/5
Bangles meets the Ramones, let's dance!
Quick, poppy, riot grrrl lite
I had quite some fun with the album but it felt like a lot of the lyrics were quite outdated. All of the names in songs weren't familiar to me at all and I felt like i missed the messages they were going for.
Solid instrumentals and beats met with pretty hard to love vocal work. 'Hot Topic' was my fave tho.
One of the most forward facing girl-rock / riot grrrl albums, this really reminds of the late 90's and early 00's when I was a kid and this was present. Mom always did support strong women. I love that it's rough on purpose and that they took production and performance into their own hands to emphasize the point. Catchy, fun, chanty, anti-establishment... it hits all of the right notes
Nice that it was a quick listen, enjoyable and light sounding. Won’t seek it out again though
Here's the deal. i WANT to like it more than I do. Why don't I just write this review the way Le Tigre would want me to write it... Drum machines, cheap synths, riot grrrl screams. Feminist slogans, basement shows, Xerox zines. "Hot Topic is the way that we rhyme!" Old-school samples, Casio tones, DIY design. Jangly guitars, distorted hooks, radical stance. Name-checking icons, Kathleen’s dance. Feminist art, "Lesbians on Ecstasy," Julie Ruin’s energy, punk necessity. Roller-skating, megaphones, party-starting beats. “Deceptacon” explosion, kicks you off your feet. Zine-making, mixtape love, East Village streets. Glitchy noise, tambourine, electro-punk elite. Politics, protest, queer liberation. Anti-establishment, girl-powered frustration. 1999, still fresh, still loud. Le Tigre forever, screaming unbowed.
I'm sort of neutral on this one. It was by no means bad, it just didn't spark a ton to me.
Art punk is not a good genre, but if anyone is going to do it well it’s going to be some spunky feminist femmes.
I was pretty impressed with this album. While I'm typically not the biggest punk fan, I found the lyrics to be great, the music to be unique and the beats to be pretty bumping. Not bad. 3/5
Pretty good!
Interesting stuff!
Not my thing and I tried listening to it a couple of times. Just nothing memorable
They're the opposite of what I thought of PJ Harvey - horrible singing, questionable musicianship, yet somehow it works?
I don't like her voice, I don't like the production quality, I respect but don't identify with the feminism, and punk isn't generally a genre I enjoy other than in small doses....but....somehow, this all works. Truly the sum is greater than the parts. I wanted to not like it, but I kind of do. I probably won't listen to it frequently, but I won't avoid it either.
Really interesting. Enjoyed the individual songs more than the collective album.
This was fun! I liked the variety of style and I'll definitely listen to again.
It was kind of fun.
huh
This is probably fun at a summer festival. It's like post punk with 60s garage rock. Reminds me most of the B-52s. I like their excitement. They have some good ideas here and there, but they're too repetitive. The singing is pretty bad. Favorite song: hot topic.
This is very important, landmark record, but it's of a place and only occasionally successful. Deceptacon is as good as it's always been. A lot of the other stuff - do not cancel me - feels very undergraduate (and even Deceptacon, to be honest). I mean, What’s Yr Take on Cassavetes?, lol. Anyway, I've read Girls to the Front, I can say this stuff.
"Oh, fuck! Giuliani! He’s such! A fucking jerk" is a take that ages extremely well. Deceptacon is awesome. A good reminder that as much as I like the clash, I'm not a real punk. I know the amateurish approach lo-fi recording is a conscious stylistic choice, as well the kinda grating vocals, but they're not for me. Editing on my second listen: think this is true for Hot Topic and Cassavetes, but the rest of the album is not this way (But the "shout single words non melodically" technique on cassavetes very rarely works for me--not on Dude yr. so crazy!!! either). Guitar is pretty cool here though. The The Empty rocks pretty hard. Liked Phanta So okay, I liked this more on a second listen. Not sure it really would ever make my regular listening though. I really want to like riot grrrl. Maybe someday.
I miss when cool young people in New York were woke and not fascist weirdos for some reason. Unlike the often execrable genre "pop-punk", this album mixes pop and punk successfully.
3/5
A little too screamy
Erilaista hauskaa punkkia, jossa on vähän rumpukonettakin käytetty. Dance-punkkia ilmeisesti :D Uusi termi mulle. Parhaat: Deceptacon, Eua d'bedroom Dancing, Friendship Station
To my shame I cannot think of one all woman group which I enjoy or like. Which is odd because I admire and have many favourite female musicians In fact many more female than male. This album did not change my feelings to all girl combos but made an admiral attempt. Above the clatter of typical punky ever repeating riffs there were some nice melodies going on which were quite endearing. So not as bad as I thought and an album when I’m in the mood for I would return to. 3/5 10/2/25
I wouldn't seek out this album but it is an interesting listen. The did highlight how much giuliani sucks in My My Metrocard.
Cute funny not very relevant to me riot grrl stuff.
point0.
1/28/25. I'm familiar with Le Tigre but this is my first time listening through. Love the punk rock spirit and the electronic elements.
Le Tigre has a decent energy that pops when it's done well, obviously Deceptacon and Phanta but also Let's Run. It's good and I can hear a fair amount of influence it might've had on a bunch of music I enjoy now, but it doesn't sustain that quality throughout, and the last three tracks are really quite bad. Sure, that's not easy to do, but the guitar lines are the most memorable takeaway from most songs, rather than the song itself. 3/5 though, more good than bad.
This was pretty good - catchy, slightly rough pop punk stuff with big, loud guitar behind it. The slight distort on everything dates it a bit, but it's still a really fun listen without being lifechanging. High end of a 3/5.
I love the punk attitude, the sixties influences, the production and the fuzz guitar riffs. Less successful are the vocals and the single riff trick gets a bit monotonous and ultimately it started to get boring.
Tiger but in french! Grrr
an eclectic album with elements of rock, pop, new wave, and dance… all with a punk attitude. at times, it reminded me of the go-go’s. interesting stuff.
I discovered this album the year it dropped while deep in a music exploration phase, but only the first song was available to me at that time. It feels like the album fed off of Liz Phair (Fuck and Run) and L7 (Shitlist) and came out morphed like this and passed on the favor to Bikini Kill (Rebel Girl). This band is really appealing and I bet they were awesome live. The vocals are strong and effective.
Plenty of interesting stuff to listen to here, but an unfortunate amount of dreck, too. I expect I’d like it more with repeated listening (especially the stronger cuts) but not sure I’d feel compelled to spend that time. Mad respect for their energy and tenacity, but a tough 3 stars for me.
Kind of forgettable outside of the first track. I really like the 80's vibe mixed with some punk elements but there just wasn't much that stuck out.
I was hoping to like this more, based on what I've heard of Le Tigre before and being a Kathleen Hannah/Bikini Kill fan. It was still alright, but just felt a little disjoint. I wonder if their later albums are more cohesive. 3/5
Wanted to like this more than I did. I kinda find it annoying. I much prefer Bikini Kill stuff. 2.5/5
Not bad! C+
Genre: riot grrl? Hahaha I liked it
Album 643 of 1001 Le Tigre - Le Tigre (1999) Rating : 3/ 5 A "vibrant mix of dance-punk, riot grrrl, and indie rock" Fun album. Am not familiar with the "riot grrrl movement", so I'll have to research that a bit. Good tunes. Lyrics seem to offer a bit more than I picked up on the first listen. Not a masterpiece but worth the time.
The opening track is a stone cold banger. The rest of the album feels a bit like an extended single, and then has a load of musings gaffer taped to the end. So 3.5er rounded down.
I was really not enjoying the first few songs on this album but Phanta got my attention, and I sort of enjoyed the album after that. Definitely something.
Another album I would have loved as a 16 year. Great opening track - Deceptacon - but sadly not sustained over the album - a few other gems - in particular Eau d'Bedroom Dancing - enjoyed the garage band/punk vibe. High 3 for me as not sure would listen again that often.
If I was 13 and female I would have absolutely loved this. With an older head I can see why the opener has orders of magnitude more listens on Spotify than anything else, it got me intrigued, excited, but by the third track that had all but died away. Some ok ones later on, but this album surely has no staying power.
yeah good album!
This was fun to set up my new laptop to
Political. Fun. Noise ish.
They got annoying after a while, especially when the lyrics were just listing stuff. I liked Friendship Station alright enough but I wouldn't put this on the list it was ok at best
Was pleasantly surprised that I actually liked this album!
A good sound, but really just one sound played over and over, with some random intellectual smugness thrown in.
3 STARS!
This is weird wild stuff, I kinda dig it. It somehow feels before and ahead of its time.
Ihan kiva. College-henkeä, lähestytään 2000-luvun erityiscooliutta mutta lämpöä tässä onneksi edelleen on. Riot girliys vähän elähdyttää mua aina, vaikka sen naiivius ei olekaan mun ykkösjuttu. Voisin palata kuuntelemaan uusiks.
Pääsin toisella kuuntelulla sisään - ja halu kuunnella toisenkin kerran kertoo enemmän kuin tuhat sanaa. Bändin konemainen naivismi ei puhuttele minua esteettisellä tasolla, mutta musiikki itsessään on siinä määrin tarttuvaa, että LP on kiistatta kuulemisen arvoinen.
A new one on me, although I knew the opening track. I really enjoyed this. Fun, playful, energetic, with a proper punk spirit. Short, sharp and sweet. One to revisit.
I love the SHOUTY SHOUTY element to this, especially first thing on a Monday morning. There's a general skuziness to the sound. Plus the overtly feminist lyrics give you plenty to think about. Cassavetes doesn't come out of this well.
I don't know this was fine but not sure what to think of it. Had a song about Metrocard for the subway I guess. Be nice and give 3 stars why not
I didn't mind it. Couldn't really gather what they were singing about most of the time. But some of the tunes had catchy little beats and riffs. If you like this but want it amped up a bit find Oteboke Beaver. Like this but wilder.
frekar skemmtilegt hrátt bílskúrsrokk með áhrifum frá grúvi sjöunda áratugnum. 3,5.
My My Metrocard is chad. The rest is whatever.
Catchy, fun guitar on some songs. 3.5
I'm so back! This album was witty and fun but I don't know if I would actually... listen to it. A bit sparse and one note. All the same! Fave track: Deceptacon
have heard 2 tracks so far, cool! raw, growly
An opening track that is undeniable followed by fun 30 min. It's akin to an early b52s album updated for 2k. It's a blast for sure. Good but not great.
3 Stars (8/15)
en något svag trea. det är lite rått på något sätt och jag gillar känslan men känns lite för tillrättalagt eller nåt vad fan vet jag.
Dance-punk, riot grrrl, new wave.
Good punk liked two songs, will listen again!
weird but fun
Mér fannst þetta bara mjög hressandi plata en varð fljótt mjög endurtekningarsöm og eiginlega of listræn eða ég fékk það á tilfinninguna að þetta væri hálfgerður gjörningur. Mun gleyma þessari þrátt fyrir að hafa skemmt mér yfir taktinum í henni
Jú, bara nokkuð hresst og fjölbreytt. Gæti þetta alveg aftur.
Kathleen Hannah rules
Teetering between a 3 and a 4. This was very fun and likeable, like an energetic toddler, but also very throwaway and I probably won’t revisit. Landed 3 in the end.
A very cool blend of punk rock and girl power pop, photo-electronica? Whatever it is, it flirts the line between catchy and overly yelly very well. The experimental instrumentation lightens it up nicely.
No other album on this list has changed my opinion so quickly. In the opening 30 seconds I thought I wouldn't like this at all, mainly because of the vocal. But as it went on it's really grown on me. I almost gave it a 4, but it gets a bit samey after a while. Someone here knows how to write a catchy beat, it forced my toes to tap and my head to nod along. It doesn't feel like an album, but more of a collection of individual songs, all of which are really fun. There's not enough fun music around anymore.
Deceptacon is a fun album. This is like 90s The Go-Gos and I like it infinitely more. There's something punk and something pop and something retro about this. The feminism on this album is right in your face which I guess makes some sense due to the fact that this album came out at the height of the Grrl Power and Riot Grrl eras. What's Yr Take On Cassavetes has maybe the stupidest lyrics of any song I've ever heard. Phanta shares some of the Imperial March. You can hear the Pixies influence. Eau D'Bedroom Dancing is cool. The lyrics pn this album could have been written by a whiny sixteen year old girl in 1998. The album is short and catchy. I don't know that I love it, and again, the lyrics are truly dreadful, but I wouldn't turn this off if it was playing. The Donnas owe these ladies a debt of gratitude. Dud Yr so Crazy!! is maybe worse lyrics than the Cassavetes song except the spoken word lyrics over an industrial beat makes for a much less appealing song.
This is a pretty basic album. Instrumentation is simple, production is simple, mixing is rudimentary. But I think that's the point of this one. It sounds like an album that was recorded in someone's garage. The use of a drum machine instead of an actual drummer kind of irks me a little. Typically I'm a sucker for female rock bands but while I like this, I don't think I would really play it again. I find myself thinking that this was sort of a missed opportunity and that the songs would be so much better with a little step up in production. I love the message, I love the sentiment, but the music is just lacking a little for me. I would be very interested to hear some other things they did after this album; I feel like they were a band that could have grown into something great. I wanted to like this record more than I did and I think I'd rate it like a 2.75/5.
kötü deil
Playful and not over thought. Not my favorite, but good for what it is.
Interesting album from an interesting band. But not quite my style.
Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: 🟨🐯❓ Mix: 😲🙂👌 Musik: 🧷♀️💪 Wertung: 🐯🐯🐯/5
I probably would have loved this if they were not trying to purposefully underproduce the whole thing, as a political statement. They write beautiful melodies, and have a sense of song structure that many highly acclaimed artists lack. All in all I am glad I know that this exists, even If I am not going to revisit it.
Some of the upvoted 1 star reviews tell you a good chunk of what you need to know about why Bikini Kill and Le Tigre are cool. It would be cool to have listened in 1999. Sadly for me this record's been mined for pretty much all it's got by low effort dance punk bands & self-deprecating twee acts, and though it's way better it's not all that distinct. That half this doesn't take itself seriously would have been fun when it was more novel and when it was more current. There's something a lot more compelling about levity from people who can be serious, something cool and brave about it when you were just in a band that faced throwing-stuff-at-you-on-stage level antagonism. music: failed to appreciate adequately. ( -_-)
77% Best: Decepticon, Hot Topic, Phanta, My My Metrocard, Friendship Station Must-Hear? Not quite (overall; it is must-hear for its genre)
It's okay. Its problem is that, being old and having listened to lots of things, I remember the bands from where they took their inspiration, some of whose work will probably be on this list somewhere. If I were younger and didn't know those influences, I'd probably be more impressed.
Some real bangers on here, but it's inconsistent. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Love their style and sound.
Love the start so far, Deceptacon is a great tune and the pace keeps ups into Hot Topic. Great album again and one I will go back to.
the most 1999 album that has ever been released
This album was kind of fun. I liked the energy and the raw sound. On the minus side the vocals were annoying at times and sometimes when they put down a groove they would ride it hard until they beat it into the ground but overall it kind of won me over. I'm still going to remember this sound in the coming days, weeks, months and I'd listen to it again. For that I'll round up my initial rating of 2.5 to a 3.
One song i particularly enjoyed
Deceptacon 3 Hot Topic 3.3 What's Yr Take on Cassavetes 3 The The Empty 3.1 Phanta 3.4 Eau d'Bedroom Dancing 3.4 Let's Run 3.2 My My Metrocard 3.5 Friendship Station 3.7 Slideshow at Free University 3.2 Dude, Yr So Crazy 3 Les and Ray 3.3 Score: 3.258333333
Rather enjoyable. Reminiscent of the Ting Tings but slightly more friendly.
I liked this more than I was expecting. Definitely would listen again.
This sounds like the spice girls on acid. That is not necessarily a bad thing.
Starts strong, super fun, lots of attitude, witty. But also sonically abrasive; for me it wore out quickly and I struggled to make it to the end. Belongs on this list.
Le Tigre made clean, energetic punk music that focused on Feminist messages. Their self-titled debut album is filled with danceable, new-wave tracks with a distinct element - edgy punk with only female voices. These are good songs: melodic, engaging songs with a consistent focused message. Le Tigre has moved punk into the nineties, with synthesizers and drum machines.
closer to a 3.5
Enjoyable, alot of similarities to the Riot Grrrl movement, hints of The Go-Go's .. will deffo listen again.
Nice.
I usually hate this kind of stuff, but this was pretty good.
3.2 - I loved the first track and then it was just quite a lot of the whole album. Would listen again though
But Deceptacon!
Slightly nonplussed today. I do like them though I don't often listen again
Well that was fun and lively.
Crunchy to crisp production that breaks with the traditional DIY rrriot grrrl sound aesthetics. The political message is as omnipesent as - sadly - still very necessary.
I feel like I might want to go back and listen to this a second time; I really did not like the sound at the start of the album, but I was warming up to it by the end. Pointed and humorous lyrics also help make this stand out. Honestly one of the first times a punk sound hasn't completely turned me off. Top tracks: Eau D' Ballroom Dancing, Friendship Station, Dude Yr So Crazy!!
Favorite Tracks: Deceptacon Hot Topic What’s Yr Take On Cassavetes
Ok but not a standout and probably won't listen to again.
Interesting. Some songs grated a little. 3.25
Le Tigre sure is le fun. Pretty enjoyable listen overall.
Yeah fun enough
Dance-punk, riot grrrl, new wave.
The highlight of the album: Les and Ray Slideshow at Free University Deceptacon .....see you later. 3.5/5
Dance-punk, riot grrrl, new wave.
Punk, pretty raw, but stereotypical.
I like Le Tigre but I'm reminded that it hasn't occurred to me to put a Le Tigre album on in nearly 20 years. I guess that's a problem with being so topical?
I actually own a Le Tigre album (not this one, rather "This Island"), somewhat accidentally when I found it left on the street--I'm not sure I even listened to it for months, and had no idea what the band was like. I'm impressed to discover that this debut album shares a lot of similarities with their 3rd and last album (but not in a repetitive way), and I enjoyed this album as much as "The Island". Not exactly my favorite music style, but they have good lyrics and a well-produced sound (for what they're trying to achieve). "Deceptacon" reminds me (perhaps oddly) of a later version of the classic Ministry "Jesus Built My Hotrod", perhaps simply because they both have references to "ding a ding a dang a dong dong ding dong " (more or less). And it's pretty funny to see/hear how "My my metrocard" is strangely re-relevant with its critique of good old Giuliani. My favorite song on the album, though, is probably "Slideshow at Free University," which reminds me of the exhibit/film "Manifesto" (probably because the song is also an excerpt of a manifesto), as well as the band "LCD Soundsystem".
Gurlz Ruckaz
For a few of the songs the vocals are a bit too rough. But the instrumentals throughout are great. It is easy to hear the influence this had on the girl rock groups of the 2000s and beyond.
Better than expected. Kinda fun.
They sure like listing things. Fun energy and I appreciate the SpongeBob aesthetic of the cover
Very interesting but far from amazing.
Not bad, some decent instrumentation at points, but the singing was grating, and it felt a little experimental at times. I guess punk isn't for me.
Who did this font better: Le Tigre, or Spongebob? Anyway, this is a great dancepunk/riot grrrl album, full of everything that made/makes riot grrrl great, but somehow even more fun. It’s refreshing to hear such a thorough criticism of Rudy Giuliani from 25 years ago.
I didn't know anything about this going in. It reminded me a bit of The Runaways. Deceptacon had a variety of styles within the song (most of which were too "punk" for me). Hot Topic was a change of pace - I enjoyed it, with its very long list of feminist icons in the second half. The end of What's Yr Take On Cassavetes was weird, with the dogs barking. Really disliked The The Empty and The Phanta. I liked the first half of Friendship Station, but not the rest. The next two tracks (Slideshow at Free University and Dude Yr So Crazy) seemed like a completely different artist on a different album. The finale (Les and Ray) was a nice feeling to wrap it up. Overall, not bad, but not my thing.
Not a one hit wonder for me anymore, decent fun :)
Indie, lofi, experimental, electro, mid/fast, female, samples, bells, dancy and groovy, air to breathe, aged well, high voice, but not annoying
Honestly I can see why people didn't like it. The songs did feel indistinct but ngl I had a lot of fun with the album regardless. It didn't take itself seriously and I really enjoyed that aspect of it.
I remember when this came out and it made it into my school...scandalous in a catholic school
A lions in the chain or of Indy rock. I couldn’t wrap my brain around it at first, strange and interesting, fun and intriguing
Had only heard a couple songs by them but hearing an entire album makes me appreciate their contribution. But, many mid songs.
Not bad.
Pretty good late nineties alterna-punk.
2.5 stars. This was weird, dance punk-ish. I enjoyed it at times, but overall just didn't do it for me. Standout is "Deceptacon".
Something a bit different, without being offensive. Consistent without being too repetitive. I think the vocals lets the rest of the music down, but isn’t too bad. I had to google who Cassavetes is to see what my take is; I don’t have one.
Got better on the 2nd listen.
Belongs on a different list titled '1001 albums with a couple of songs you must hear Favorite track: Eau d'bedroom dancing
it's aight. Pretty funny lyrics, fun and energetic sound
Good beat, fast tempo. Good music to get one going and keep them going.
Pretty enjoyable mix of genres here. Love the angry feminist vibe, but there are definitely also a mix of much worse songs.
A fun, experimental pop album with a punk loaded first half that sounds like it was just a bit more fun to make than it was to consume. I’m projecting, because I used to make bedroom rock that had a lot of these same elements; out of tune guitars, minimal production, vocal styles that didn’t match the tone of the track, etc. and I always felt like no one would be very interested in hearing it.
Deceptacon is awesome... the rest is fine
Punk grrl rock, good fun
Cat: this is kinda fuuuuun. Actually kinda badass
3.4/5 - Very fun and brillant first half. Second half is a little odd, but could be fun in the right place/time.
Real punk
Ganz nett. Mal was anderes.
Nice rock, don't really love her voice though
Solid punk rock. I didn’t know any of the songs, and I didn’t particularly get hooked by any of them either. But I like the album and would want to hear it again.
It makes a lot of sense that this is a post-Bikini Kill project, cuz it feels similar to what that band was doing, but in a more dancy indie direction. Sadly, I think this record gets hurt a lot by the first song being so damn good, cuz nothing else even comes close to that song, which just leaves me wanting more but never getting it. But its still pretty good overall.
Never heard of this band before, but I recognized a few of their songs. Some cool punk/new wave sounds, but in a late-90s context if that makes sense. Kinda has some triphop vibes at parts as well. The lyrics were dope too. Enjoyable.
Nice mix of punk and electronica.
Good, but forgettable
Litt eksperimentell men ikke mye ganske bra 3.5
It was okay. Quite fun.
Some pretty interesting stuff on here. Some tunes don't work but others I liked quite a bit.
It's ok. I appreciate the sentiment. I mean for an album that's 20 years too late it's ok. Listen to X-ray-specs from 1978. Poly Styrene was an astonishing person. But then she never made it to Tik-Tok.
Oikein mitätön. Lyyrikoita en kuullut heh naisulinaa koko albumi….
Not sure how you would even classify this music, but definitely a familiar sound that still felt completely new. It was like the Go-Go’s went punk. I appreciated the New York call outs on “My My Metrocard” (Rudy Giuliani DOES still suck) and while I didn’t hate this album, I don’t think I’d revisit anytime soon. It was a fun listen, but not exactly my cup of tea and songs like “Slideshow at Free University” really grind my gears on albums because they just feel like experimental fillers. Do something that sounds good if you want to experiment with a song you’d only be able to put on an album and not be a radio hit!
3.5, one of my more preferred punk albums.
Really enjoyed this despite what my initial reaction off the album cover provided me. 3/5
beh cheddira
Good album. Starts great, short, fast, punchy etc I'm gonna go with a high 3/5
goofy uuuuuh music. really enjoyed the songwriting on this one, at times biting. best tracks: deceptacon, whats yr take on cassavetes, eau d'bedroom dancing
i used to love this album, but now, I don't know. maybe it aged poorly or maybe my sensibilities have changed in a way to misalign me from it. still plenty of highlights but it verges on plain ol' annoying too much to me now
Standard 90s electro indie pop fayre
This is the best Kathleen Hannah mode. I struggle with Bikini Kill.
A pretty kooky and interesting selection of tracks. I enjoyed how different it was. Fun fact: I played one song in my Year 8 class and one of the students asked if it was Le Tigre. Kudos to them!
Bom.
1 heel goed nummer, voor de rest beetje eh
Pop raivoso e engajado que flui bem.
Možda dođe i do 4. Ali mi se sviđa.
Loved it a lot was an interesting listen. Angry women music is always good
A really fun dance-punk record with Kathleen Hanna's usual gritty lyrics. It often sounds like a direct successor to bands like ESG , Gang of Four and A Certain Ratio, which is a great thing of course.
Pretty great dance punk with simple, but efficient beats!
beetje EUT vibes
It's pretty fun, and I enjoyed the inventive nature of the album. Besides the first track, nothing was super special.
I liked it! I'm torn though. Was it a 3? Was it a 3.5? I'd say 3.5, round down. Tough call. Fun album.
love these guys
This is decent stuff. First track is tons of fun.
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. I could see how this could have paved the way for some of the indie sounds in the 2000s
This is cool I think I'll need to listen to it again to fully appreciate it. It's 3 stars for now
Best song: “My My Metrocard”.
Feels very loose and energetic. Dabbles in B52s-esque new wave, maybe a little light industrial (I got less noisy Big Black vibes on a few tracks), as well as some basic hip-hop. A fun, quick one. Favorite tracks: "Deceptacon", "Let's Run", "My My Metrocard"
Different, electronic. If in the mood, gets repetitive
I feel like this band, and this album, is in similar style to recent Sleater-Kinney record that I have stumbled upon on this list. Not only because of the mostly female lineup and lyrics theme, but also because of slightly experimental/screamo style both of those bands present. In case of Le Tigre, there is much more emphasis on "experimental" part - many songs are very original in their structure, with few hits and a lot of misses, in my opinion. Couple of more conventional tracks are really good, like the opening "Deceptacon". Overall, interesting position on the list, but ultimately I wasn't completely sold on it - but I will be happy to give it another go in the future.
I appreciate the cultural impact, has some good songs, but overall it is an average listen 5/10
Good feminist punk! Unsure how you reckon the song "I'm With Her" with this, though. That song is dogshit. Sidenote, but a song like Hot Topic (or something like La Vie Boheme in RENT) seems like a kind of shallow way to approach the whole, you know Favorite Tracks: Deceptacon, Les and Ray 3.5/5
