What do I love as much as a girl band sound? A punk girl band sound.
Phenomenal
Just banger after banger. Love the way it seamlessly transitions from dance music to noisy, angry punk
A little cringe but I love the sound
I’ve heard this before, but it’s been a long time. I’ve loved Bikini Kill since high school but for whatever reason Le Tigre didn’t click with me when they came out. Anyway I get it now and I love this shit. I think part of my issue was that they don’t sound much like Bikini Kill and another part was the drum machine - at the time a lot of bands were bringing in drum machines and electronics to fit in with the “electronica” that MTV was pushing. The first point was me being dumb because new bands have new sounds, and the second point is also dumb, because they weren’t following trends and the drum machine works really well with their minimal sound. This album rules. Remind me to go back in time a few decades and slap some sense into young me.
very fun and unique fav song: Deceptacon
I knew deceptacon from somewhere, I don't know where. But I love it. This whole album is brilliant. So much fun energy. The fuzz sounds reminds of the sort of awful sounds I was making when I first got an FX pedal and they are kind of awful, but the songs are so fun it just gives this whole amateur fun feeling to everything. I'm debating whether to give this a fiver, it's definitely a high 4. I think I have given better albums fours and if I were to revisit there are definitely some I would change. This is a glorious fun fuzzy gir(rrrr)l rock party and I love it.
music is love
#306/1001. After 2h and 13 minutes of Metallica mashed up with a Symphony orchestra this washed out any sonic shit or off my ears. (Well I did skip 2 hours of the s&m album, but still felt like I was lost in neverneverland). I forgot how fun the first Le Tigre album is, on par with Julie Ruin s/t. Fun and political, what's not to like? Sorry for stealing the bomb, I really regret that, but I put it to Pirkko Mannola's Maailman paras levy, where it will serve several future generations.
Man, there is something so raw and visceral about this album. Just kicking off with “Deceptacon” tells you everything you need to know: punky, raw, and abrasive. It takes the legacy of older female punk bands like X-Ray Spex (another great find from this list) and just runs with it. For a modern comparison, it sounds like the band “Wet Leg” took a lot of inspiration from this. There are many good tracks, my favourite is, of course, “Deceptacon”, but others like “The Empty” and “Eau d’Bedroom Dancing” also stand out. I haven’t really listened to the full album before, I only knew “Deceptacon” before listening to this. It might just be the honeymoon phase of discovering a new album, but I think this deserves a 5. It’s fun throughout, and I’ve already found myself coming back to it multiple times.
its allllllriiiiiiiightttttttt
"Oh, fuck! Giuliani! He's such! A fucking jerk" 1999, boys and girls. Visionaries.
I love this album! There was not a single song that I wanted to skip. The songs were a nice mix of punk and rock with a little something more thrown in. The music was just plain fun… I’m glad I got to hear this album. March 11, 2026
Aahhh jeg elsker dem så meget. Kathleen Hanna er så cool, musikken er så interessant. What's Yr Take on Cassavettes, endelig nogen cinephiles på listen!!
I could listen to Deceptacon 100 times in a row and still want to hear it again.
lof it
MON CLASS
I want Kathleen Hanna to be my girlfriend.
Heel leuk!! Ik kende het eerste liedje goed en loop daar vaak op. Nu ben ik gaan lopen terwijl ik het volledige album luisterde
j'ai vraiment bien aimé
i legit thought this album came out in like 2012
Adorei! Da logo um boost
Love this album
Really enjoyed this!!!

This album has this unique electronic sound - that I never knew I liked - that I've never heard before, but I REALLY happen to like. The album contents is quite diverse, with the next song always done in a different style than the last ranging from like indie pop to this obnoxious (in a good way,) snot rock - though all of that is still done with a bit of an electronic tinge to it. I genuinely want more albums like this. Highlight Song/s: "Deceptacon" and "Hot Topic"
Iconic. Played it with my teenager and her friend in the car, and they both already knew it. My old friend Kevin Brown has always loved this band, he’ll be so proud.
Deceptacon Dude te souhaite crazy What's your take on cassavetes
Hard to listen to at work because it always makes me want to dance
Such fun, punk vibes!!!
I’ve heard of Le Tigre before, but prior to reading about them, I thought they were a Latin music band. I guess I just heard the words ‘Le Tigre’ and thought, ‘that’s Spanish, they must be something along the lines of Manu Chao.’ And now I feel silly. I see now that Le Tigre is a riot grrrl band, a genre that I’m not terribly familiar with. I’m not sure if Le Tigre is anything like Sleater-Kinney (whose Dig Me Out I really loved), but if they are, I think I’m going to be in for a treat on this album. On a side note, this will be my final album from 1999 to review, and I’m betting that at minimum, this album will be a fun send-off for that year. I was really impressed by this debut album from Le Tigre. It’s definitely a riot grrrl album, but there’s such a diversity to the sound of this album, mostly driven by some excellent guitar playing. Some songs definitely felt closer to punk, but Le Tigre was able to crank up the dance knob as well, creating some songs that had infectious beats, bolstered by some great usage of the sampler, keyboards, and drum machine. Lyrically, I loved what Le Tigre did on this album. There was sharp social commentary, critical observations of the music, industry, and homages to cultural and historical figures. Who knew that we’d still need to hate on Rudy Giuliani in 2025? This album really hooked me in on the first track, and it never let go of me. As far as my favorite songs are concerned, I’d have to go with “Deceptacon,” “The The Empty,” “Eau D’Bedroom Dancing,” “Let’s Run,” and “Slideshow At Free University.” This album just has so much to offer in terms of sounds and lyrics, and there really wasn’t a bad or boring song anywhere, and at a tight 32 minutes, this album achieves a lot.
Le epic The Trial reference spotted!
Oh hell yeah
A new discovery for me., I really liked this one.
very unique album
Always been proud to share a name with the legend Kathleen Hanna. An album full of bangers!
So rad! I had heard a couple of single songs of this record but never listened to the entire album in its entirety. So good.
I LOVE Le Tigre and their influence is legit.
Great record. I don’t know how I missed it all this time.
I mean is there a greater opening track than Deceptacon? That baseline flips a switch in my brain and the serotonin pours. That glitchy guitar riff into the "see you later" has stayed with me since the first time I ever heard it. This song is the perfect introduction to Le Tigre. The album is a scorcher. I want to say it rips through twelve tracks, but really its a mix of dancing, swaying, kicking and punching. Their tone is such a unique blend of raw, distorted, techy, and bubbly. Kathleen Hanna already made her mark in the punk space with Bikini Kill, inspiring a future of feminism in music. To then debut Le Tigre with this album is masterful and a true testament to her influence in rock music history.
Man, these punks are angry. 5/5
Huippukova Riotgrrrl-levy! Ei kumartele! 5/5
Just an all-around fantastic album. My friend got me listening to 'Deceptacon' about a year and a half ago and the full album did not disappoint. My favourite track, aside from Deceptacon, was "Whats Yr Take On Cassavetes?'. Maybe some of the best riffs on a project as well.
My partner is sexist by giving this 4 stars. Men don’t get it.
Wow! Really captures the late 1970s LA sound. Can't believe I never heard of this band before.
This was a really good album, very interesting and up beat!
One of my favorite albums. It's got everything: unique, sorta "nostalgic" vibes, amateur-ish, yet astonishing vocals, and insane instrumental. No skip songs, too. Overall, i'd rate it 5/5, very solid
Love the bass punk
Wow I randomly went through Bikini Kill randomly last week so perfect timing. Honestly think I enjoyed this one more than Bikini even tho the former is more iconic. Just a ton of fun throughout while sounding like it doesn’t try too hard Rating: 4.6
Rocks hard, super interesting and Smart.
While I had hoped that Julie Ruin would last, when Le Tigre dropped with its lo-fi feminism, it was another revelation entirely. Proving all the territory this record covers is danceable. Hot Topic is the way that we rock, indeed.
Words dont exist. Explanation is futile.
C30, Göppingen - Stuttgart, Deutschland. Nur Hits!
Absolutely mindblowing most likely will crack my top 100 albums ever. 4 harddcore punk feminist women kicking ass and showing the pop punkers how it is done. Cant believe I had never listened to this band. They should be uber famous. Punk, electronic and a a lot of amazing sampling with political and social lyrics. Wow insane. Gonna go listen to all other albums.
Let me here you depoliticise my rhyme... (One of my favorites, obvious 5)
So stoked I found this. This is my favorite type of work from coffee shop forget you have music on but it’s scratching the brain just right.
Deceptacon klasyczek Campowe bangery oparte na referencyjności i popkulturowym przetworzeniu sztuki
Never heard of Le Tigre before. Deceptacon starts strong! Album is very interesting. Like a halfway point between New Wave and Hyperpop. You can tell they have had an impact on modern pop. They remind me a lot of bands like Wet Leg. They sound a lot more modern than 1999 to me. This album is way better than I expected it to be. And to be honest I don't think there's a bad song on it. Just a super tight album with no filler. And from doing a little research it appears they are linked to other bands I enjoy like Bikini Kill, so it's surprising I am just discovering them now.
This album was completely in my wheelhouse. Really enjoyed lots of different elements of its sound, including the instrumentation, the vocals, and its use of clips or samples. A lot of the tracks are built out of these short and simple looping repetitions that seem to pair really well with the looser vocals. But the variety is actually really strong as well - they might share some of these common elements but every song feels distinct. "Deceptacon" - Great opener. I especially love the way her voice breaks on lines like, "Wanna disco? Wanna see me disco?" "Phanta" - One of my favorites. I can't really interpret what's supposed to be going on in this song, but I like the "tower communication" dialog clips anyway. "My My MetroCard" - I was skimming the Wikipedia article before I started listening and my expectations for the album went up when I saw there was a Rudy Giuliani diss track. "Friendship Station" - Love the "I wanna be there / I wanna take you there" chant (including the way it's delivered). "Dude Yr So Crazy!!" - I'm totally a sucker for stream-of-consciousness noun list songs. They are kind of hard to come by - They Might Be Giants has at least two but I'm struggling to recall any others. So this ended up being one of my favorite recent finds off the 1,001 and I'm sure I'll work through Le Tigre's other stuff later.
Loved it!
5/5. I love this so much. Pop punk, girl riot, scratchy production, in your face lyrics. This is what they mean by "terrible times fosters great art." Just rocks so hard, the vocalist really brings it home and the guitar riffs rip. This was just so fun and real, I have no qualms with it. Best Song: Deceptacon, Hot Topic, My My Metrocard, Eau d'Bedroom Dancing
Fantastic. Great energy, a little goofy at times, just all around fun. Loved it.
Everytime I put it on, the music draws me in. Great energy and intriguing vocals.
What a lovely surprise. I guess I'm a sucker for dance punk now.
- so good. -
A fucking bop, prime early example of prison jazz. Well, I wish it was something more, but it's still fun from the first listen.
+The the Empty
Fun
Incredible!
Surprisingly good
I haven't listened to this album in years - and its definitely going back in rotation! So raw, so funny, so dancey, so good!
Utterly unexpected, had no idea that this was who it is, and love it to bits! Thank you 1001 :)
This album cover looks like a poster in a Tarantino movie that's not so subtlyl referenced that it's about 3 babes that solve crimes solely with their bare feet. Great album tho
This was a lot of fun. I'd never heard of Le Tigre but thr first two tracks were familiar, and I liked pretty much all of them. Timeless in a way that's rare, as in, I don't think I could have guessed when this album came out. Could be any time from the early 80s to today, really. Some of the political stuff was kinda flat, maybe that's the part that aged, or maybe if I was younger and not yet a leftist it would resonate better idk.
Love this Album. I heard this the first time when I was a teen and it fired me up. I was sick of living in a men's world and I felt like Le Tigre sang what I was feeling, and that combined with my teenage against brought out my activist side. It was transformative and fun at the same time
Infectious dance tracks While wildly relatable And badass to boot
I dig these chicks
It shouldn't work, I shouldn't like it But I do it's excellent, the only disappointment is that it's taken over 25 years from its release to listen to it
Love
Really some fun, jump-on-the-bed head-banging riot grrrl punk that pokes jabs at yucky dudes (damn Giuliani, you have been a menace for how many decades??) and pays homage to legends and even childhood neighbors (Les and Ray) for helping Hanna and Le Tigre bring such a unique slice of women-led rock into the forefront. This album shows that riot grrrl is not just angry feminism, but can also be sensitive, snarky, energetic, and most of all, a pure delight.
This is why I'm here. To find a gem I otherwise might never listen to. The album I never knew I needed.
Wow this album is great!!! Definitely not for everyone, but this album is why I started following this list. This album is an all time great for me now and yesterday I had no idea who they were. If you like things that are weird and different you will like this. My only complaint is I can’t give this album a 6 out of five.
Some day, if we're lucky, we'll learn not only who took the bomp, but who took the ram
Fuck it...
Great album, loved it
Had a listen to this when I first picked up the 1001 albums book a couple of years ago, thought it was ace. Turns out I have a soft spot for riot grrrl bands. It's been on regular rotation ever since.
Got it. You hate Bikini Kill. Le Tigre is completely different ... Also, say what you want about Kathleen Hannah... it's all been said before. Just watch this first... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRTAEtc_nwA
How is Bikini Kill not on this list!? So I actually like Le Tigre better than Bikini Kill, but Kathleen Hanna’s original band usually gets so much credit for kicking off the riot grrrl movement that the omission of “Rebel Girl” from the list seems wrong. That said, Hanna’s second band put out the better album with “Le Tigre.” From the moment “Deceptacon” starts bopping you can tell this one is special. The blend of punk, surf, and indie is terrific, with pointed political anger but also a lot of fun.
Excellent
Girlpower magnifico! Para escuchar una y otra vez
Each song is a fun little energetic, political poppy snack. Like Fruit Gushers filled with 90s energy.
How is this 25 years old! It's riot grrl *and* girly. Deeply progressive and light and fluffy. Feminist and knowingly cheesy.
Can't believe I haven't listened to these guys before. I loved every minute of this album. Weird but catchy in all the right ways. Hard to choose because I liked all of them, but I think my favorite song was Phanta. I will definitely be listening to this one again and will try to remember to look up their other albums.
Lots of fun. Felt like Julia Stiles in a 90s teen film.
Really quite an impressive album. I really enjoyed every song of this. Maybe it's because we've have a large spell of albums from '70s men? Regardless, the hits were great, but also the rest of the album was excellent. Sounds very timeless and cool. 5* will definitely play again!
Liked this one a lot. Crazy this was 1999 as by 2010 all pop music was trying to be this.
I so wanted to hate this, but I love it. It's getting five stars and going into my Tidal library.
Кру
Loved that!
how r u? fn thx u.
The idea for this album is a 0/10. Dance/electro punk with a singer with a notoriously shrill voice? No way this is any good The execution for this album is a 10/10. Holy hell this fucking rocks front to back. Every song is a banger
Incredible. Really liked this album. Definitely will be checking out more from them.
More crackers please Favorite Tracks: Deceptacon, My My Metrocard, Dude Yr So Crazy!!
Very good. Never heard of them before now.
Power of punk.
Never heard of these guys, but I'm impressed. Great punky energy.
One of my favs already
Ace.
4-5
Great

Girl punk all day!
Always loved it, still rocks.
I thought it was too much noise at first, but I ended up loving the album with its unique sound
Muy buen albur, una sorpresa para mí. Hacen una buena cruza de estilos de una manera entre salvaje y elegante
pretty fire
This was fun. Idk where I recognize the first song from, but what a way to start an album. I was happy that it kept that energy and that it was short but good. No complaints.
They don't come much cooler than Kathleen Hanna. As lead singer of both Bikini Kill she's a deserving option for figurehead of the riot grrrl scene and holds her own against the punk rock bands. But Le Tigre had a unique energy, channelling elements of the early 60s and new wave, with a strong backbone of punk. Lyrically, the album shifts between angry and a yawning boredom of right wing patriarchy. You can almost see Hanna holding the classic 'I can't believe I'm still protesting this shit' sign. The music is full of bangers that could have been singles. 'Deceptacon' and 'My My Metrocard' are some of the best punk songs of the 90s. All in all, it's just a great album.
Kathleen Hanna wrote Kurt smells like teen spirit... because he smelled like her bandmate. Then she later was in this fun group.
Having already heard this Le Tigre album, I knew as soon as it popped up that I'd love it. The saddest thing about Le Tigre is that one stupid song they released which was also my introduction to the band. I hate that the 2016-era internet hate bandwagon is what I most commonly associated with this band for a long time (at least back when I had no understanding of this genre or this album's significance). I was an annoying young teenager at the time so of course I fell into it. I guess I'm not helping the association by making this the first thing I mention about this album, but this is about my experience. My first actual listen to this album was under better circumstances. I had finished going through Kathleen Hanna's other releases with her other Riot Grrrl/punk band: Bikini Kills. Honestly, though, I love the Le Tigre self-titled more than anything from that band (and I still really like that band). After all that rambling though, I can say for a fact that this is one of the most idiosyncratic post-punk albums out there. Largely attributed to the electronic and dance-punk-based production all over this thing, which is incredible. None more notable than the opening "Deceptacon", which almost sounds like an electronic punk club banger. It's far more accessible than anything Hanna has done previously, with a relentlessly catchy doo-wop-inspired chorus. I also really love the droning and hypnotic follow-up "Hot-Topic" with the awesome shout-out bit at the end (something that clearly influenced James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem later on). The bass and drum are killer throughout this thing. A few tracks near the end almost have a hip-hop-esque feel to them instrumentally, especially on the bassy, looped, and sample-driven "Slideshow at Free University". Maybe the thing I love most about this album, aside from its incredible electro-based production, is its self-aware nature lyrically. I'm not sure why, but compared to many other punk lyricists (In a genre that is already highly self-aware), Kathleen and co-vocalist Johanna come off as more self-aware, sarcastic, and overly blunt, yet still very enjoyable lyricists. I think the best example of this is in "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?". I love the oddity of the song "Phanta", an almost sci-fi-themed story-driven banger that almost sounds proto-pop-punk. The following love ballad "Eau D'Bedroom Dancing" is utterly gorgeous and an incredible highlight, showing Hanna taking on a more soft-spoken performance. Aside from this slower song, every other song packs an incredible punch. Some of my personal favorites are the electronic groove on "Let's Run" and the organ-driven follow-up "My My Metrocard". This song is one of the more bluntly political songs, condemning then-NY-mayor and notorious piece of shit Rudy Giuliani contrasted with images of freedom within NY. This is one of the greatest punk albums of the 90s without a doubt. It's one of the best-sounding ones for sure and as for the entertainment factor, it excels in that from front to back. It's just such a fun album to listen to for me, be that the catchy choruses, incredible dance-punk grooves that come off grainy and uneasy, or the subject matter tackled on most of these tracks. Genuinely just incredible and an album any punk fan should check out without a doubt.
Kathleen Hanna…. Love everything she does.
Wow, this is absolute peak 90s indie rock. Very clearly inspired by bands like Sleater Kinney, whom I absolutely love. This album thrives off its simplicity, it's very gritty and underproduced, and they make that sound the whole point of the album, and it sounds great. And of course the strong feminism in the lyrics is always something great to hear.
This band is my exact wheelhouse and when I mentioned to my wife I listened to this great band I had never heard-she had heard them! I was very mad. Anyway, even though I've only listened once I already know it would be a 5 someday so I'm cutting to the chase:
LOVEE THE COVER. I don't know that on the left side is, but it seems artistic, plus them being on the right, as if I bought that yellow thing and their faces came along with it. It's punk rock as I've checked so I might not find it as fun as I think, but I'm with an open mind. First song, Oh what a familiar start, I've heard it somewhere. Oh the voice is like Kate Bush almost, but it's more rocky. I think it's a boy singing, so he screamed for a moment. OMG I'VE HEARD THAT INSTRUMENTAL RIFF SOMEWHERE. Ohh the first part got extended now. Outro is quite weird, but I love it. Second song, what a funky start. It's veery chaotic, I love it, I mean there's two voices colliding. He should scream more, it fits the vibe. The guitar is giving. It's getting kind of repetitive, I was more impressed at start. Ohh SO NEVERMIND THIS IS MADONNA'S VOGUE CORED SAYING THE NAMES, WHO INSPIRED THEM, SUCH FUN. Didn't expect this tbh. Third song, talking hmm. It's progressive, but in a different way. I love this so much. It's unique, like not some basic rock, it's the way they sing, and background instruments deliver. What are these dog sounds at the end. 4th song, he is low key screaming here, and barely can hear any words. They love adding a background voice when he's singing. Another chaotic song tbh. This was as well different from what I've heard ever, I mean I have, but Le Tigre just does it better. 5th song, some talking at the start. I don't think it's a boy now, pardon me. She sings less chaotically, but there's this beat that is louder than her. I'm not getting the vibe here. I love that instrument, which is the best part here, but otherwise it's... Umm I'm kinda liking this now that I'm listening to it. It was monotonous too much I'd say. Breaking glass sound at the end. 6th song, Depeche Mode vibes. It's melancholic in a way. Instruments are louder than her, even when she's singing. I'm not impressed, but I love that background sound of that guitar, the one that was at the start. Mother Mother has this vibe, I think. Quite nice, I'm loving this experience so far. 7th song, a much fast paced start. It's definitely a girl singing. It's progressive, there are so many weird sounds here, that makes it much better, rather than basic rock songs as I've said already. The instrumental break was short, but it was giving, now the outro, it's too good. 8th song, Ooo the funkiness here is quite nice. Definitely a bop, the lyrical delivery is just amazing. I'm in love with this artist, they bring these rebel-like songs, which just makes me take a different look at other music. 9th song, I LOVE THE START. It's not going as good as I want it to. This better get more interesting than this, it's too permanent wave rn. Well I guess that's the whole song, well I expected more. The instrumental break is nice, but in the overall sense boring(it was short too so can't really judge it). This is a no for me. 10th song, vibey start. Weird sounds as always. It has a hip hop beat almost. WHO IS THIS MAN. Oh the whole song is that, instrumental then it stops and men talks, which is a sample, but it actually happened, and then instrumental again. Oh they used song when they were presenting a slideshow, makes sense now. I'm weirded out by those glass breaking sounds. 11th song, it's a dramatic sound. Ooo I love this kind of lyrics, just saying things. I LOVE THE MEANING OF THIS, it's them making fun of someone who thinks that things she is saying about him is interesting, but it ain't. This is very rare for me to check the meanings, but this artist is just asking for it. Also she has a bored voice here on purpose, love that. 12th song, quite a different vibe. Mmm I'm not impressed. The chorus isn't chorusing. Though this has a Björk vibe in a way, which I like, but I need more from them now that I've seen their best songs. Oh that was the last song, welll I wanted moreee. Directly gonna say that it was a 5 star album, even though some tracks were not as good, some were too good and unique. I just like things that sound and seem more artistic in a way yk, this has that vibe, so I feel like maximum rating is fair.
OK, part of this 5 star review might just be all the nostalgia of this album about a very specific time in my life. But, really, this is fucking rad. And what's up with Le Tigre these days? 2.1M monthly listeners on spotify?! Staying relevant
Kathleen Hanna performs with such abandon that it’s impossible not to enjoy whatever she’s doing. This band is so much fun. It’s pure LES/Brooklyn pre-9/11. Extra bonus is the dig at Giuliani in My Metrocard. I don’t care if I don’t love every song. The hits are so excellent, they carry everything else.
Absolute classic, bangers all around. Kathleen Hanna kills it.
What's your take on cassowaries? Big fuckin' birds, want to kill you. Would not recommend.
I am always going to be here for a solid riot grrrl situation. I know it's off-putting to some folks... but those folks can jog on because this rips. Gimme all the riot grrrl you got. All of it. Even if you are one of those insecure machos whose balls shrink at the sound of screaming chick vox, you gotta give props to these musical arrangements. They're SO GOOD. There's so much going on that I just want to listen on repeat and pick it all apart! The lyrics are, by-and-large, fantastic as well. Even the songs that initially feel "dumb" are that way on purpose. They're there to be challenging. This was a firebomb of an album and I'm here for every minute of it.
Never heard this before and was glad to hear it, I liked it! :)
This is probably the best album of the list so far and it's one I hadn't heard before. If I only get this one in my rotation out of 1001 it'll be worth it
Very good, wet leg vibes
This thing rips and roars and shows that queer, feminist punk can rock JUST as hard as whatever the boys are doing. With a phenomenal opening track the consistency of the songwriting is incredible. Kathleen Hanna is a mad woman and Le Tigre, here, come out of the gates SWINGING.
Jaunty. Want to listen to more
pakko antaa 5 ettei hanhi syytä mua misogyyniks (tykkäsin oikeestikin)
Been meaning to listen to this for a while, masisve hanna fan, this might be even more my thing than sleater kinney
This album rocks! Kathleen Hanna is just great!
One I own. A lo fi électro punk joy. Kathleen Hanna is one of the coolest ever to do it. Everything breezes past and is simultaneously far cleverer and stupider than you'd think possible. Also, Deceptacon is the greatest indie disco floor filler of ALL TIME
The lyrics are dump like a linoleum floor. I'm so bored that I'd be entertained even by a stupid floor. Brilliant. I'm so entertained and wanna this vynil.
Strong songwriting throughout. Had not listened to this album for a long time, but the opening song is immediately recognizable. Clearly one of the best pop albums from the 90s.
What is this high school reunion of music 😭😭😭
What an amazing quirky band. I nearly shut it off after 5 seconds , but it turns out their work is quite varied, intelligent and the screaching is used selectively, thankfully. Interesting lyrics. Varied style. (Mr Elbows can tell me the name for this style as I am ignorant) Turns out I got interested enough to look up their more recent work. How did these guys stay under the radar so long? I guess that's Indy music - you end up getting noticed on a soundtrack selected by people with great taste... Good stuff - quirky, good stuff. Feels like walking down King St Newtown after a strong espresso....
That was fun, very cool song writing drawing on every corner of the pop music world, fantastic guitar sounds dropping in and out, some brilliant rolling drumming and great vocal lines. I knew Deceptacon as I was vaguely alive in 1999, but I'd not clocked the rest of this, which is superb. I thought about the sixties white girl groups and then The Slits, et al, all that kind of landed in Le Tigre's lap and they twisted it again to great effect. Dimery was right on this one Michael Chabon fans, well worth a listen as they wheel you into the first day at the nursing home, it will help you kid yourself it is going to be ok...
loveeeeeew the ansk
Fun and unique!
This is such a fun album. It manages to be upbeat and silly while also being subversive and politically relevant. For example. My Metro Card seems like a silly song about public transportation, but becomes a song about how Rudy Giuliani's policies were affecting New York. The harmonies are great and help make the album feel really dense with music without feeling suffocating. This is one of those albums that you could drop today and it would still feel fresh and relevant 5/5
Very fun nice suprise.
Love it. Very minimalistic, yet appealing.
Genuinely good music. Great mix of genres creating a sound that evolved into recent artists like The Prettiots
Alltid.
Best riot grrrl album of all time in my opinion. Every song on this album absolutely rips, and it has a ton of variety and weirdness that keeps it fresh like dog bark samples, pitch shifting, explosions, etc. It has it all.
One of my all-time favorites. Kathleen Hanna is a national treasure.
I'm fond of this album already. It's fun and quirky and different.
Good album!
Bad ass girls rocking out
I have no words!
This album is so tight and a great relisten
music freakin' rules
Hell yeah
I love this exact brand of music. Surprised I've never heard of this band before, although I am familiar with some of the names in the riot grrrrl movement but not this one. Absolutely will be checking them out. Also reminds me a ton of Neko Case's first band Maow.
as a huge Bikini Kill fan, of course I've listened to LeTigre
The coolest album of all time?
so cool
Love it just as much as when it was new
Always been a big fan of Deceptacon, so it was nice to sit down with the album. Banging tunes, great to bop along to.
🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Good album! I have heard of these guys before but I've never really listened to them, but I enjoyed this!
90s girls rule!
Gonna gear the rest of their discography.
I ended up liking this album much more than I expected. I loved the combination of a rough sound, a laid-back attitude, a sense of fun, and an underlying rebellious spirit. My favorite tracks were What’s Yr Take on Cassavetes, The The Empty, and Eau d’Bedroom Dancing.
“Deceptacon” and “Hot Topic” are a fun start to the album. Lyrics silly, but still fun.
This was an interesting listen. These women have some kool musical ideas and style. A catchy style that wouldn't have been popular at that time.
Day889 - my musical spectrum isn’t as broad as i would like sometimes but it’s fun to experience something new from something old
Ever see that movie Go! The one with Katie Holmes and a bunch of other famous actors. This album reminds me of that movie.
I would have sworn this was 80s female punk. I liked the sound more than I thought I would. Angry women with a message are so effective. A 3.5+. Happy to round up.
The fact alone that it's Le Tigre made me instantly rush and listen to it. Worth every second.
A fun revisit! It's deliberately simplistic, repetitive and slightly annoying. For most songs, that doesn't matter, because it's also such a cool blend of fun, catchy and angry. But sometimes it falls through, which costs it one star in my book.
I love Kathleen Hannah and all of her bands. Bikini Kill is my super fave. I actually had not heard this album before listening and I was not disappointed.
I've been a fan since it came out. It's cartoonish and runs right up to, and sometimes over, the line of being annoying. I like that they swing for the fences and there are enough hooks to keep me coming back.
Music wasn't 100% to my taste, but I I liked their whole vibe.
4/5 - Deceptacon is an all-timer for me. I also like the extremes of The the Empty and Eau D' Bedroom Dancing quite a bit. I think this has aged pretty well given the 1999 release, though oddly some of this like the instrumentation on My My Metrocard sounds like a 60s TV show theme. (Love the Giuliani dig, btw.) Was quite surprised to see this album on the list, but I'll take it.
I'd sort of say this one was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting it to be as mid as mid goes, but it actually ended up having a lot going for it. I enjoyed the energy, and I thought it was actually quite interesting. There was a reasonable amount of variety, and just an overall punchy tone that was genuinely quite infectious. The downside is that for as many bits that I got really into, there were bits that grated. Some of the vocals and effects were just really irritating. I'm a bit torn as to whether to give this a 4 for the good bits, or whether to drop it to a 3 overall. Might change my mind later but I'm going to go with a 4 just for the surprise aspect.
This is really fun love her vocals, got good variety of styles, this feels like it was a big part of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's inspiration. All the songs were short and I think that suited what they were going for, really enjoyable listen. 4
I didn't know this band at all and enjoyed the album. Like the punk energy and the feminist themes although it felt a bit downhill after the first 2 tracks which I never think makes for a 5*
listened before
Always liked the energy and fun of this one
**Le Tigre** (1999) is the self-titled debut album by the band formed by Kathleen Hanna after the dissolution of Bikini Kill. It represents a deliberate pivot from the raw punk aggression of riot grrrl into a more playful, electronically-infused territory that Hanna described as wanting to make something "totally pleasurable and political too." ## Music & Production The album's sound is a deliberately messy collage of 1960s girl-group pop, punk rock, lo-fi new wave, and hip-hop beats. The band employed Farfisa organs, samplers, turntables, and guitars, with many beats programmed on an Alesis HR-16 drum machine and samples stretched across an Ensoniq Mirage sampler—equipment choices that gave the record its characteristically crunchy, low-resolution texture. Pitchfork's contemporary review described the formula as "pop-crack": garage rock structures updated with pop, punk, and surf guitar, layered with samples to create "cinematic" atmospheres, then frosted with hip-hop-infused drum machines and new wave keyboards. The result is music that feels simultaneously retro and prescient—60s pop melodies filtered through 80s electronics and 90s DIY ethics. Tracks like "Deceptacon" and "Hot Topic" are built for immediate physical response; as one retrospective listener noted, they became "the soundtrack to kitchen dance parties." The production is intentionally lo-fi and homemade-sounding. Johanna Fateman noted that the long, stretched samples on the Mirage were "crappy-sounding... poor, low resolution," but this became the album's defining sonic fingerprint rather than a limitation. The vocals often carry what Wikipedia describes as a "bored or soft-spoken tone, punctuated by more energetic bursts," with girl-group chants that critics likened to the Shangri-Las. Hanna was specifically fascinated by the tension of women with "way more constraints than we have now, singing these really fucked-up insipid heterosexual love songs," and sought to subvert that tradition. ## Lyrics & Themes The album is unapologetically feminist and politically didactic, but delivered with humor and pop immediacy. The lyrics emphasize frankness as a deliberate counter to the ironic detachment of hipster subculture. **"Hot Topic"** functions as both a rollicking pop song and a roll call of feminist and progressive icons—Joan Jett, Sleater-Kinney, Billy Tipton, Vaginal Creme Davis—whose work deals with "hot topics." The chorus declares "Hot topic is the way that we rhyme," essentially arguing that political consciousness can be woven into catchy pop. **"My My Metrocard"** targets New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani with the now-legendary line: "Oh fuck / Giuliani / He's such / A fucking jerk"—a protest song that has proven relevant decades later. **"What's Yr Take on Cassavetes"** exemplifies the band's willingness to be simultaneously cerebral and literal, interrogating the legacy of the filmmaker in a way that feels more like a seminar discussion set to music than a traditional rock lyric. **"Les and Ray"** closes the album with what sounds like a wonky attempt at a 60s girl-group ballad, expressing "genuine appreciation for divergent lifestyles and alternative pathways." ## Influence & Legacy Le Tigre occupies a crucial bridge position in music history. They built out the punk ethos Hanna established in Bikini Kill with an "80s electro-pop style," demonstrating that political messages and playful synthesizers could (and should) co-exist. As NPR's Hazel Cills reflected, discovering this album "completely expanded not just my music tastes, but specifically my conceptions of what *political* music could sound like." The album predated and arguably helped shape the electroclash and dance-punk movements that would emerge in the early 2000s. Its influence can be traced through bands like Peaches and later indie-electro acts. The 2023 Le Tigre reunion tour demonstrated the durability of these songs—the band noted that lyrics about gerrymandering, hate crimes, and Giuliani felt "just as relevant today—if not *more* relevant." --- ## Pros - **Innovative sonic hybrid**: The collision of 60s girl-group pop, punk, new wave, and hip-hop sampling created a sound that was genuinely new in 1999 and remains distinctive. - **Political accessibility**: Successfully demonstrates that radical feminist ideology can coexist with danceable, pleasurable pop—"sugar the pill" without diluting the message. - **DIY authenticity**: The lo-fi production and homemade aesthetic feel intentional and charming rather than amateurish, giving the album a unique character. - **Lyrical directness**: The frank, didactic approach serves as an antidote to ironic detachment and remains refreshingly unambiguous about its politics. - **Communal energy**: The songs are designed for singalongs and collective experience; as one reviewer noted, the album "demands a communal experience." ## Cons - **Vocal abrasiveness**: Kathleen Hanna's delivery—alternating between deadpan spoken word and energetic yelps—can be polarizing. Multiple retrospective listeners describe the vocals as "grating," "shrill," or "nails on a chalkboard." - **Repetitive structures**: Several tracks rely on single loops or grooves that don't develop significantly over their runtime, leading to criticism that some songs "plod along but don't really go anywhere." - **Inconsistent quality**: While tracks like "Deceptacon" are universally praised, deeper cuts like "The The Empty" and "Phanta" have been described as underdeveloped or "artsy-tonårsrevolt" (arty teen revolt) experiments that don't fully land. - **Didacticism as limitation**: The overtly political lyrics occasionally sacrifice poetic subtlety for message clarity; some critics find the "Hot Topic" name-dropping approach more educational than emotionally resonant. - **Homemade production as barrier**: The intentional lo-fi aesthetic and distorted vocal mixes that charm many listeners can alienate others who find the recording "flawed with distortion" and poorly mixed. --- **Verdict**: *Le Tigre* is a landmark album that successfully merged feminist polemics with dance-party immediacy. Its greatest achievement was proving that political art need not be solemn or inaccessible to be meaningful. However, its deliberately abrasive vocals and lo-fi production make it a love-it-or-hate-it proposition—an album that "should have been much more of a thing" and emulated, yet remains polarizing precisely because it refuses to compromise its vision for broader comfort.
This is fantastic! Riot girl, surf music. The sound is a bit derivative of the B-52s — tends a little more to the punk and riot girl sound. But even a B-52s knock off is worth a listen. This is worth it — a 4 for sure.
First Half: Wooo those hooks are infectious. The line between really good and gimmick.novelty with Riot grrrl is really really thin. This album blows that line away and shreds with it. Infectious indie, infectious riot grrrl punk, infectious pop Second Half…sigh, at least it’s creative.
Great but voice can get grating
Fun!
What a delightful mix of deep opinions, humor and fun music. I came to this band years ago, not even knowing Kathleen Hanna was a member. While not a complete left-turn from Bikini Kill, Le Tigre certainly brings a significantly lighter musical approach. It makes for better listening, and therefore probably stronger propaganda/messaging for Hanna’s agenda. I was stunned to see “Deceptacon”’s level of popularity, but deservedly so for its infectious quality. The closing song “Les and Ray” tapped into a similar 1960s girl group liveliness, while “Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing” and “Dude Yr So Crazy!!” incorporated Pere Ubu, Public Image Ltd and early EDM to make for danceable and sinister songs. The best marriage of politics and pop was “My Metrocard” as the band hit its best groove, while the lyrics took a tour of 1990s NYC in humorous fashion. There were a few clunkers. “What Yr Take on Cassavettes?” boiled the choices down for the listener by shouting out his genius and terrible personal qualities. Both stereotypes were not interesting. “Hot Topic” was not a bad tune, but the flashcard list of overlooked women may have been impressive at times (Shirley Muldowney was a cool reference), however it took away from the rest of the song. Those are minor critiques as this record was an impressive debut album.
interesting lyrics and powerful sound
Some of the very best that Riot Grrrl has to offer.
Album started off great, a few songs in the middle frame were just alright but it brought it back to close out strong. Enjoyed listening to a full album by Le Tigre. The lo-fi jams alongside the activisim of their lyrics puts this on on repeat for me.
I love the riottt gurl genre, and this is an excellent example of it. Sharp rock, art criticism. Slowed down toward the end of the album. 4/5
I think the first two thirds of this album are fantastic. They do a good job blending electronic and punk elements. The last couple songs are weaker and hold this back for me. The vocals and lyrics are great and bring the energy you would want on something like this. Favorites were Deceptacon, The The Empty, Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing, and My My Metrocard.
Really fun. Rode the line of being annoying at times but an album full of youthful energy and some very good songs
Never heard of them but this is very cool
Had no clue what to expect for this one, but I have to say I was enticed by the album artwork that looks like the title card for a SpongeBob episode. Pretty interesting songwriting, and the vibes kind of fit SpongeBob too. Well, maybe if SpongeBob was produced by Adult Swim. Really cool that Le Tigre members Hanna, Fateman, and Benning purposefully used electronic equipment they weren't familiar with to make this album. Especially since they did it to really turn the tables on the male-dominated electronic music status quo. "Deceptacon" is, of course, a favourite for me from this album. Just a solid track all around. I really enjoyed "Slideshow At Free University" as well. The beat grooves while having fantastic little details, reminiscent of the mechanical sounds of a tape deck.
I got sick after coming back to Toronto, so Im a bit behind.. (I will easily catch up) but didnt want to listen to this while I had a raging headache as I knew it would make it worse. Thats not to say I didnt like this, as I did! Gets wierder the deeper you go into the tracklist. This kinda music surpasses labels and genres, it feels like they were just making tunes based in their emotions, not worrying about what box they fit into, and I fuckin love that. Album art is also really whacky, it gives me SpongeBob vibes for some reason? I think its the font... although looking at it again, its only reminiscent of the SpongeBob font. Who's bed is that? Why does it look so uncomfortable, and why is there a spike there? I have questions that need answers Le Tigre
Delightfully raucous fun with a sardonic edge.
Sucker for salty bitches that can rock. Love it, added to the rotation. 4.5
Kul, poznano, všečno. "Deceptacon", ki odpre album, je fantastičen. Fak, že neki cajta nism ta album poslušala, "Hot Topic" je isto a banger. Zj že v bistvu v tadrugo poslušam in mislim, da je poleg prvih dveh, zgoraj omenjenih, "The the Empty" my top 3. "Eau d'Bedroom Dancing" zveni k, da so Pixies. Ampak, načeloma, I like it.
Very cool
That was quite cool.
Great record
I had never heard of these, I really enjoyed the album
Cool stuff. Not sure why they hadn't bubbled up naturally to me.
90’s Punk ⭐️My My Metrocard
"Deceptacon" is a certified banger, and a great way to open this ass-kicking riot grrrl album. Super weird, but you can tell these girls don't give a fuck, and I'm all for it. Some great feminist/progressive lyrical messages in a tight, 30ish minute package.
v cool and it’s bikini kill affiliated
I don’t know what I expected but it was not this. Good stuff, though.
Nevermind the twenty years in between, this feels like a direct spiritual successor to X-Ray Spex, and I'm immediately in! It just needs a little saxophone to really push it over the top for me. Why did we surrender all of our brass and woodwinds to Ska? ANYWHO. What an album. I had a few of these tracks on a larger playlist already, but I'll be adding more and checking out the rest of Le Tigre's catalog.
Nice discovery. I think it's really good artistically, it feels playful but tackles issues. Great post-punk poppy electronic sound. It's not that amazing musically, but that's not the point. A girl band the way I like it.
Now this is fun. An odd amalgam of Ramones-style punk with some new wave influences, all wrapped up in just over half an hour. Was not familiar with this band or that Riot Girl supreme Kathleen Hanna had a successor project to Bikini Kill. The definition of a fun album.
Another great example of stuff I wanted from this list. A complete unknown to me, Le Tigre embodies a genre that I have memories of, but could have never named before this. Riot grrrl, though new to me in name, I think has always seemed like one of the core punk genres in my lifetime. I can fully understand how this could be very divisive music, but I also think that's kind of exactly what punk should be. The very non-singsong vocals are etched into my mind from whatever exposure I've had to the genre in the past. And there's loads of that here, alongside bluntly political lyrics and a distinct 90s sound from the mix to the samples. I think there's an argument to be had that I should give this a 5, and I may at some point, but there's some repetitiveness that I just didn't love when it came to the choruses on some of the tracks. Still, this was a highlight of the list so far. Highlight #1: Deceptacon Lowlight: Dude Yr So Crazy!! Highlight #2: Phanta
Pretty much bops the whole time?
WHO TOOK THE BOMP
Really enjoyed it without it having that absolute stand out banger to get the extra star
Really liked most of it towards the end got more experimental which was also nice but i just found myself preferring the beginning more really solid album overall!
Hey this was cool, sort of indie rock/electronic/60s mix.
Gurl Power!!! (Not in a diminutive way) I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would from the first minute. It would have been easy for them to slip into a boring one-tone post punk mess, but each song managed to be unique though of-a-piece. They do a lot with a little bit of ability. Sort of like a Cibo Matto-style sound with 20% less songs about food. Very cool.
A pleasant surprise. An interesting album full of interesting tracks. Would listen again.
4.5⭐️/5 04.01.2026
Bikini Kill by way of Joy Division, and those are both such good things. But it feels like something entirely fresh and new. More fun than ferocious, in a deliberate way that hits just as hard. I’m trying to be more disciplined with my 5-stars.
Angry girl punk rock. Love it!
The best 80’s album of the late 90’s.
Ja errug leuk
Was going to say the singer sounds like the singer from bikini kill, but it is her, so that makes sense. Love the backings, feels like there's some elements of dance music, hiphop and indie stuff, but it overall feels quite unique. the production and stuff is also great. I think its probably a rather perfect move for someone coming out of punk music, however I do think her vocal style can be a bit too much when she's yelling a lot of some of these more layed back instrumentals, where it worked a lot with the heavy punk music. She does sing differently on the bedroom dancing song, which might be my favourite. Favourite songs: all pretty much. Overall around 7/10 (only just)
I had never heard this before and now I feel stupid.
this was weird in an excellent way. deceptacon is a classic.
I knew I’d like it, but I didn’t know I’d love it.
While a bit on the screamy and distorted side, this sounded quite fresh. Even more so considering it was released in 1998! I found most of the songs playful and interesting. There was a good variety between electronics and rock, along with some very weird but cool samples! Definitely had a "Go girls!" feeling to it that felt progressive and cool. Didn't really find any particular low-point, all of it was pretty fun and interesting. High points were 'Phanta' and 'Deceptacon'. Kind of want to give this a weak 4... but at the same time I don't think I'll return to this that much. Oh heck it, weak 4 it is!
4 Grrreat. Enjoyed the experimental tracks on the latter side as well.
Electro-punk and dance-punk built on lo-fi drum machines, buzzing synths, scratchy guitars, and spoken, chant-like vocals bursts with playful, DIY energy. Listening feels like being inside a chaotic feminist art happening where beats, slogans, and ideas collide in bright, flashing fragments. The result is raw, catchy, and conceptually sharp, even when it feels intentionally (and positively) messy.
Surprisingly excellent. Le Tigre proves you've gotta be melodically interesting and prioritize that to successfully deliver an overt political message in your music. Love the atmosphere on quite a few of these tracks. The guitar sound, while repeated quite a bit, gives the band an incredibly easy-to-pick-out sound. Vocal style of each member works, too. "Deceptacon" is the big one, but I also am very impartial to "Eau d'Bedroom Dancing" and "Hot Topic."
I mean, hell yeah. The coolest kids in the room for a lonngggg time.
Album #1,071 This was kind of cool. I was worried all the vocals were going to be yelled obnoxiously like the first track, but they were more varied. Good riffs and melodies. The lyrics I understood were weird. (I don't know who Cassavetes is, so I can't answer their questions about him.) I'm guessing Le Tigre is a radical feminist group, but I can look past that if the music is interesting and sounds good.
Girrrrrrllll rock. 4/5
Enjoyed this, like Devo and the B-52s had a Riot Grrrl baby and I’m here for it. Will return.
White Light/White Heat if instead of heroin, all the band members were on sugary drinks.
I’d not listened to this one before. Heard a few of the tracks individually. Really enjoyed it, a real shame there wasn’t more of this type of music going into the early/mid 2000s.
Upbeat, rocky, and a very fun listen, this album was very enjoyable and I liked all the elements in here, especially the riffs, and lively vocals. 8/10, Favorite Song: Deceptacon
terug een nobele onbekende... zette zich ergens tss de Ting Tings en X Ray Spex... er zijn mindere plekken om te vertoeven...
It is really great. Deceptacon towers a bit over everything else, but a great record nonetheless.
I like this. It was cool
I love women in rock. So camp
Banger! Den her lyder ret forud for sin tid, meget mere 00er end 90er.
Vet, lekker punky
An uncompromising fusion of punk, pop, and 1960s girl group sounds into a lean mean hook machine.
I worship at the altar of Kathleen Hanna.
Amazing album! Recognized instantly the voice of the vocalist!
Fun fem pop
Super
Definitely a definitive banger. Had never listened to the whole album somehow despite loving the hits since my youth. Defo did it.
Karen Oh's origin story.
This is cool
Let’s Run and listen to this album.
3.5/5
deceptacon ist eins der besten lieder jemals, aber auch der rest von dem album war okay. auch vom politischen her, ist das album stark, ich find aber vor allem den namen und das cover extrem cool
Enjoyable.
Really strong start but drops off. It is short though so does not overstay its welcome.
Niiiice… this is right up my alley. Punk rock with a big influence from B-52’s. It’s got a great mix of noisy rage and more playful songs. They also have an avant-garde streak, particularly on the later tracks that changes up the style. Definitely worth more listens for me!
Oh wow this "Deceptacon" song I feel like I've been hearing for years in college basement alt indie parties, in between LCD Soundsystem and Neutral Milk Hotel tracks. It's great hearing this now, in 2026, almost 30 years after this album was released and realizing that so many modern bands sound like this and owe something to this band and sound. Listening to this record I'm hearing strong influence to more modern bands like Wet Leg, Junior Varsity, CSS, and more. Cool album.
Great! I would have been happy with a whole album if punk songs like the first but the experimentation with the electronic and sample elements were really cool. Great vocals as well. Favourites: Deceptacon, Hot topic, Phanta, the bedroom one, let’s run, my metrocard, friendship situation and Les and Ray. Overall, 8/10.
OK postizei exei synth
A rollicking good time
Like The Slits meet Tom Tom Club. In a good way. I had no knowledge of this band, but read Riot Grrl and was expecting harsh guitars and angry screaming. Instead this is unexpectedly sprightly and lively. Actually, if the Slits and Tom Tom Club partied with DEVO and B52s. That's what it's like.
Stand-out tracks: Deceptacon - love how prominent the bass is and energetic the track is Hot Topic - Cibo Matto mentioned, but it also reminds me of their style a bit, which is a plus Phanta - a very peculiar track, so much so that even an explosion doesn't feel like a weird ending for it Eau D' Bedroom Dancing - despite the very loud and distorted guitar, in contrast to the rest, this is a more laidback track Let's Run - the name really suits the enegretic nature of this one Friendship Station - I especially love the drum beat on this one Les and Ray - the xylophone-like effect gives this one a more soothing feel, appropriate for an album closer This album subverted my expectations and I found some genuinely good tracks on it. It left me quite shocked due to the bold decisions the band made on some of the songs, both lyrically and instrumentally at times. However, these decisions sometimes didn't improve the track, rather they caused the opposite effect especially considering the ones towards the end. Despite some questionable tracks, I was quite impressed by the end.
Highlights: Deceptacon, Hot Topic, What's Yr Take On Cassavetes, Phanta, Let's Run, My My Metrocard, Les and Ray The record is very feminist overall so I felt like a good little performative male while listening to it. Because of that feeling it's not REALLY my style. But that's ok, I'm just not the target audience I guess. As a guy I really don't understand some of the topics covered in the lyrics... Musically speaking it was dope - my fondness for the record mostly came from this fact. It took a couple of plays to click, but eventually it did. Combination of punk and these digital sounds make it a cool experience. I do appreciate the short runtime for something so experimental. It feels very of its time, but then again it's ultra unique. The sound is very Beastie Boys like, but the high pitch vocals and feminist lyrics really make it stand out. Liked the homage compilation that is Hot Topic - "You like women? Name every woman ever". What's Yr Take On Cassavetes picks someone so random to me that the meaning didn't really click with me at first, but let's say the modern version of this would be Kanye. The instrumental on Phanta kinda began like some White Stripes song lol. Let's Run was kinda a copy of Deceptacon. As the record closes it gets calmer and dials down the vocals. This is the low point of the record for me since those tracks are kinda basic alt 90s. Very much worthy of a revisit in the near future. It holds up as a record and the tracks hold up on their own. Can't say many bad things overall.
GOING IN: Quite hopeful LISTENED WHILE: walking the dog FAMILIARITY: Know a few songs SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Deffo play again DISCOVERY CURVE: Loved it straight away ALBUM ARC: Strong start, tailed off VERDICT: Better than expected BODY'S VERDICT: Decent head wobble FAVOURITE TRACK: What's Yr Take on Cassavetes? My Rating: 3.8
I really appreciate the Riot Girl era. The music isn’t always my favorite, but I do enjoy it, and this album was no exception. Really the best of the genre and deserving its place on the list. This is like a 3.5 for me and was going to round down, but the “oh fuck Guiliani” line made me round up.
One of the best openings to an album ever. Le Tigre have such a strong and cohesive style. Brilliant vocals and punchy rhythm throughout. Brilliant album.
Love Le Tigre. Kathleen Hanna is the daughter of a friend.
I love this album. Need to listen to more riot girl (sp?), though I reckon this is the pinnacle of the genre.
First song is iconic
Fínt og hressandi feminískt riot grll.
i can't believe i'd never heard of them until now!!
This is some very French bullshit
good vibes, good songs. shame theres not too much variety
I like this. Sounds a lot like the stuff that was popular 5-10 years later.
Любимый альбом Тарантино, наверное. Лучшая песня - Deceptacon.
Loved it. This is the first album generated that I hadn't heard of, and I'm glad I got to hear it.
A real vibe, it felt exactly like 1999 in so many ways, a proper time capsule. I'm not super familiar with the genre but I liked this album enough to save a few tracks.
I love Kathleen Hanna and I’ve always enjoyed this album!! It may not be a go-to for every mood/situation but it’s fun. My fave track is Eau D’Bedroom Dancing :-)
never would have found this but what a pleasant surprise!
This rips and I wish I had listened to it more in high school/college. I feel like I've heard about 1000 bands who are trying to sound like the first track (most of them from LA and used to play at The Smell). There's quite a bit of sonic diversity on this album though; it's punky and funky and weird, but definitely 1 of 1.
bom p caralho punkzão (avant garde pra caralho btw) estralante com letras boas? gostamos gosto mto de (quase) tudo que a kathleen hanna fez
Blind album and artist. Blown away. I thought this album was super cool. Such a shame though the 1st track went so hard and then rest couldnt keep up. If every track was as awesome as Deceptacon, would've easily been a 5.
I loved this! My sort of thing. My sort of era. Passed me by at the time. 4 stars!
23/12/2025 I was surprised by this. It was really quite good. Spotify listeners:
Great variety of music in the songs, fresh style, punk and electronic. Nice album. 3,75/5.
This is fun yet the music and detached ir Ironic hipness have a simple quality that is appealing but it is not something I want to Listen to repeatedly to better appreciate. It’s all there and clever in the first listen .
What a great album. That was so much fun! 🤘
What I would have given to be 18 years old in 1998. I would have been such a menace
