Reviews (page 12 of 13)

I enjoyed this album.

good for the era. Free Bird is what makes it stand out.

Not what I expected, classically good rock.

Famous southern band- they had a few hits especially sweet home Alabama (not in this album though). Some good songs- hard to listen to though after knowing they fly confederate flags at their concerts.

10th April 2023 Listened on bank holiday Monday with a cold. Jen back from Aus, lunch at the Crown in Minch and tea at mum and dads. Surprised by how much this got under my skin, thought it would be too dad rocky but i enjoyed it. 3.5 if I could.

A little is fun. A whole album is too much Freedom Rock for me

Favorite Songs: Tuesday's Gone Mr. Banker - Demo Version

Pairs well with a Busch Lite. Some great classics on this. Definitely enjoyed it.

1. Simple Man 2. I Ain’t The One 3. Free Bird

I admit blues rock/country rock isn't really my thing but I understand that Americans, especially those from the south love this kind of music. They can connect to it much better than me, somewhere in Europe. That being sad, there were a lot of good songs on the album and the last two minutes or to, was bombastic. I loved how the album finished. But overall it isn't a very enjoyable album for me. I'd give it a 3.5 but since there are no 'half points', I'll stick to 3.

Can understand why it was and still is popular. They remind me of a Deep South RHCP. No real stand outs but high calibre. Tremendous set of outfits and haircuts on this cover. Warwick Uni kayak society had a similar aesthetic.

Better than I thought it would be. Never heard free bird in context. Brilliant. 3/5

Omassa lajissaan melko täydellinen, mutta kauttaaltaan omaksuttu, ei sävelletty. Kylmiä väreitä: joo. Tiedät missä...

70s south rock strikes again. Congrats to them for denouncing the confederate flag.

Didn’t realize how many bops they had but I do agree second half is not as bops tbh

Better record than I thought it would be. Couple of the songs were pretty cookie cutter southern rock noise but some decent classic rock in other places

3/15- Driving to school

It was fine, freebird was the the only song that was the only redeeming feature

Banger got simple man and free bird

Freebird is a lot more rousing than I remembered and Tuesday’s Gone iconic riff I can finally attribute to its source. But this is mainly straight forward rock ballads at the end of the day, even if their high quality, it’s not my thing. They ain’t Creedence Clearwater Revival but I respect their influence for inspiring a brilliant Drive-By Truckers song (and probably influencing them significantly too).

This was okay. Some enjoyable parts, but some of songs went on a bit too long for me. Definitely not bad, but not something I see the need to come back to. My favourite song was Gimme Three Steps, I guess?

Standard Southern rock. Move on.

Three really great tracks, five completely forgettable ones. I'm still giving it a 3 because Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man and Free Bird are amazing.

Free Bird and a collection of songs from 'MURICA

Racist paedos. 3⭐️ Would listen again

I don't love this album as I'm not a huge fan of Skynyrd's hits, but who can hate this album? It's southern rock at its finest. Not really my thing, but the amount of big numbers on here is impressive.

very average. 3.

There were some pretty good songs there.

Lenny Lenny good times

One of the great album titles. Music was a bit of a let down though I did love a few of the demo tracks.

A foundational album in a genre I don't care about. The most iconic tracks are songs that I can vaguely recognize but could never name. Standout tracks: Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man

Perfectly agreeable American rock/blues.

"Play Freebird!" The 13-14 year old me would love to review this album, and he's fighting hard to be heard against the sad cynicism of the late 50's me. Growing up in Maroubra in the 70's meant bands like Skin Nerd really cut through, nothing quite like finding out the meaning of unrequited while nursing a bottle of Southern Comfort and singing along to Tuesday's Gone (and then spewing up, was it the Comfort or the song...or the girl?). So how's it holding up to these tired old ears? This is a well rehearsed garage band meets The Allman Brothers (no coincidence Freebird was dedicated to Duane). I Ain't the One, Gimme 3 Steps, Things Going On, Poison Whiskey all roll and would be fantastic in a bar on a Friday night; hats off to Mississippi Kid, but the long weepies are turgid. And just who is Al Kooper? How is it he keeps popping up in the strangest corners of the rock and roll universe? And on that I highly recommend his rock and roll memoir, one of the best. And what about Freebird? 14 year old me is fighting hard to say despite all its ridiculous pomposity, the length, the lyrics, the arrangement, the guitar solo(s).....it still works! If you really want to nerd out on Skin Nerd look up the Walker mix of Freebird. Play Freebird!

Another band I'm more likely to make fun of than listen to...but found I enjoyed more than I expected. The upbeat ones more than the ballads. Even the last track, which is in the less-preferred slow ballad category, brought a smile to my face with the sheer ridiculous abandon of its extended triple guitar solo.

Best in class Southern boogie rock. Comparing the demos to the album cuts, you can hear how well prepared the band was to record (with arrangements detailed and honed), but also how well Al Kooper recorded the band, getting a great sound out of them without polishing off the things that make the band great. But it doesn't really speak to me that much. I don't understand the appeal of Freebird (except for the blistering solos at the end, which are, rightly iconic)

Solid blues rock with some interesting but not that inventive jamming elements. It seriously suffers from is best songs being overplayed to death, but that's not the band's or the album's fault.

Surprised to actually quite enjoy this. Was expecting to hate it. Simple Man is a good tune, even if it does have a bit of a Red Hot Chilli Peppers vibe. Some of the songs are too long though.

Freebird - one of the all time great tracks, backed with some ok stuff, bit nothing thrilling enough to make me listen again.

Non proprio il mio genere ma alcune canzoni si possono ascoltare

gimme three steps simple man Free bird

familiar with some of these songs, very easy enjoyable listening

one star added for the micronap I enjoyed during the middle of freebird

Rock sprinkled with some country

3 Alright, I should preface by saying I'm normally not a fan of Southern (or wannabe Southern - looking at you, Kid Rock) rock, like at all. But, my dad spoke very, very highly of this album, so I tried going in with an open mind... though I was prepared to dip out if I had to listen to anything about the Confederacy or Dixieland. And I didn't hate it. My dad was right about the non-hits being the better tracks here. While I've never been able to stand the song Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday's Gone was an unexpectedly solid tune, and when Simple Man’s transition into some honky-tonk stuff started losing me, the song Poison Whiskey was an enjoyable surprise that pulled me back in. Then of course the album ends with Free Bird, and, while my dad is gonna groan reading this, I gotta give credit where credit is due and admit this song is legendary for a reason. The theme of preparing to fly solo for a period of one's life is one I think anyone can relate to, and the back half of the song consists of probably some of the most iconic guitar solos of all-time (or is it all one solo? Either way) Anyway, the album was better than I expected to be. Didn't fall in love with it, but would maybe listen again, or at least my newfound sleeper hits mentioned above.

Never listened to this album before, and really only knew this band from Sweet Home Alabama. Thought it was pretty good, and might even revisit a few songs like Poison Whiskey.

Not what I would usually listen to but I enjoyed it! Torn between 3 and 4 stars. Pleasant classic rock. I wouldn't necessarily revisit it in my own time but I'm glad I listened to it.

less country, more rock their biggest hits are here 3.5

Notes - Southern rock band’s debut album - You’ll recognize simple man and free bird, 2 huuuuge songs - I can see why this album shot them into the public eye, catchy, interesting, well performed songs - The production of this seems like they were like “everything as loud as it can physically go” - Bet it would sound great in car speakers - Elements of blues and country to spice up the standard rock formula Fav song - Poison whiskey - This song has some stank to it, love the organ stabs Least fav - Gimme 3 steps - Sounds blown out, stopped me from really enjoying the song 3.5/5 pretty good not great

Freebird!

It was ok

Very very very solid

It's actually not awful! My prejudice against ultra-popular common-joe bands has steered me clear of Skynyrd beyond the inevitable exposure to the insidious hits (many of which belong to this album). The band really can rock unison riffs à la King Crimson. I think the album looses steam half way through, but it's a strong offering.

I enjoyed it, really liked the closing song Album cover: 2/5 meh, just a group photo

Even I have to admit this is really good. and I hated listening to it. Also, you need to be *really* into okay guitar solos to think Free Bird is great, because if the line "I'm a s free as a bird now, and this bird you cannot change" makes you feel a lot of things, you're a dullard

So. Many. Long. Songs. Okay, there’s a only a few, so I might be exaggerating a bit. It’s a solid campfire album to rock out with and forget that it’s on. The tracks all have “classic rock” all over them, and “Free Bird” is still iconic, no matter how long it goes on for.

Decent guitar work but I didn’t really enjoy the more country influenced moments.

it's ok, not really my thing but can't say I think it's bad either

spinning rat h

Dakle, ovaj komentar je objasnio sve šta mislim o bendu i glazbi, haha. "Don't get me wrong, it's an okay album with a few enjoyable moments. There's definitely nothing outright bad about (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd), except for the name itself but every time I listen to it, it makes me feel like I indulge in incest, woman beating and casual racism and it evokes an image of some old guy with a beard, who wears a waistcoat and cowboy hat with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in his sleeve while chewing tobacco, drinking a six pack and professes his love for 'Free Bird' and claims that it's the greatest song in existence."

some good jawns on here. Skynyrd is skynyrd idk. Tuesdays gone makes me think of happy Gilmore

Bit dude-y, bit southern, but pretty good.

Heard it too much but also pretty generic

Good solid Southern rock

Ikke forfærdeligt Ikke fantastisk Bedste sange umiddelbart: Gimme Three Steps og Mississippi Kid Kunne godt være nogle gode sange fra bandet, men lidt for Vietnam til mig

Decent enough.

Much better than I expected - and of course it has Freebird.

free bird jako jinak 5 jo

Surprised by this. Wasn’t expecting to like it, besides the over played radio hits, but I did. Not something I think I’d throw on again myself, hence the 3 stars, but it wasn’t bad at all

Pretty cool

A pretty good album. I am not really a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but this album contains two all time classics in "Simple Man", my personal favorite of the album, and "Free Bird". The latter is a great song, but I do think it is overhyped and it's just so long. It is also the bane of any gigging musicians existence so I like it less as a result of that. It is a good album with two great songs.

When it comes to rock songs that generate a lot of hate because they're over-played, Freebird is often at the top of the list along with Stairway and Layla. But is it the fault of the band that these songs are overplayed and have become veritable musical cliches? They're played far too often because they're iconic and simply great rock songs. Skynrd's music is far too deep fried southern for me but I must give them credit for putting together a pretty gosh-darned good debut album that also features Tuesdays Gone and Simple man.

Good. Free bird is great.

Southern Rock from the good 'ol Boys of white boy boogie. Doesn't wear that well i feel though I know a lot would disagree. I guess its pretty strong for a debut. I remember getting Freebird on 12" vinyl way back in the 80s and I remember the lyrics spat with Neil Young.. Competent guitar work. The vocals have a clichéd drawl. Nothing stands out that much. 3

Now I know what inspired Kings of Leon Cover art 1/5

Some cool tunes. Some boring tunes. Pretty much what I expected.

Another I wasn't thrilled about getting this morning - not really being a fan of much southern rock, nor did I really feel like hearing Freebird. Again. But heh ... ok it's catchy and fun and legit. It's really hard to extricate yourself from what you've been (over)exposed to throughout your life and radio has spoiled a lot of excellent music from overexposure. This album has great guitar sounds; I love the riff-rock - I don't need to hear "Gimme Three Steps" or "Free Bird" on the radio ever (EVER) again but a) hearing them in context of the album and time period is different somehow; and b) there are a few songs I'd never heard which gave me a little more objective appreciation to the playing and songwriting. Yeah it's necessary to hear this to understand and appreciate the development of blues-rock-southern rock in the 70s. ...and f it -> ha...hearing Free Bird close this out wasn't so bad after all. 7/10 3 stars.

Good album probably contains their best songs

Free Bird does nothing for me really, but there's some good country rock bangers on here.

Pretty much every other song started and I thought "isn't this Free Bird?" It was ok. Nice, chunky, warmly produced Southern rock. Hearing some Stones, hearing the influence on Black Crowes and Primal Scream. Probably going to have to listen a load more times for it to really embed and I'm not sure I'm going to do that.

So, the correct answer to this is anchored by whether (or not) you like the second half of “Freebird”. I do, and this will overlook the multiple crimes against creativity that the rest of this album commits.

I don't care for this kind of music, but Lynyrd Skynyrd knocked it out of the park with their debut album. For me to like this album is saying something! I don't love it, but it is a solid record.

Not my thing. Can recognise its importance though.

Gotta hand it to them: they know how to write a catchy southern song.

OK. I didn't want to like it, because it's dad rock. But it's actually better than I thought.

Classic 3.5 / 5

Southern rock with some groovy guitar riffs. The album starts great but somewhat loses steam towards the middle. So Lynyrd Skynyrd really hat more songs than Sweet Home Alabama. Who would have known? 3/5

I was at a goth night once where the DJ played "Free Bird" because he needed to go for a piss.

3 (1/2)stars

Decent

Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced' Leh-'Nerd 'Skin-'Nérd) Mississippi Kid You have to pronounce it correctly, they're a rock band. Well from their massive success in the debut one in tracks like "Free Bird" or "Simple Man", they're most of all the same receipt. You're on a car trip around the east to west in America or a farm place away from the city, the music plays and neither the landscape or the motor running distract you when the songs play. It's an excellent way to start as a band, it marks an age, it's historic and deserves it. Fly as a Free Bird is not for everyone, some enjoy some don't. C

I dig a lot of the songs, but I can't stand Free Bird's first half or Tuesday's Gone.

Started great, and had the recognizable songs, but halfway through I was getting bored of the ones acting as filler

Southern rock. Some sweet guitar riffs and soloes, especially on the ballads but lyrically pretty thin (it is clearly some young guys who like running free). The more general country songs are rather boring to me. Simple Man stand out, also because I am fascinated by the concept of striving to be a Simple Man.

Listened to this a fair bit in college for some reason. I mean, some of these songs are totally iconic. I just have no urge to come back to them now.

I don’t like Lynyrd Skynyrd. All the more shocking that I LIKED this album. The deep cuts were great and more bluegrass-y which I loved! Favorite song: Things Going On. Little more honky-tonk/blues!

More than half of these songs were new to me! Sometimes you don't understand the hype behind a song, but "Free Bird" is not one of those. There's a reason it's a classic. Actually, considering that "Free Bird" was constructed for Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album is incredible! The guitar opening in "Gimme Three Steps"? Wow! This album actually has some very amazing, memorable guitar moments. Some songs were a miss for me, but hey, can you get any better than "Poison Whiskey" for a song title? "If I leave here tomorrow,/Would you still remember me?"

Better than I expected but not sure i’d listen again

Bom mas nao me cativou mto

Lots of fun 70s rock. Freebird is a classic, of course. Nothing surprising but a solid album

Southern rock has never been my passion, but I'm sure few would argue with Lynyrd Skynyrd's inclusion on this list. I can't fault the just-on-the-right-side-of-gimmicky guitar line-up at the core of their sound: two, sometimes three lead guitars working in harmony. Powerful as it must have been to experience live, it's also used to most dazzling effect in "Free Bird", which wipes the floor with every track before it on this record. Along with "Simple Man", "Free Bird" is, of course, a classic of its genre, and the track here I was most familiar with. I had to wrestle with the feeling that in 2022, it comes over as a little hammy, almost corny: maybe it's down to overuse, or pop culture's obsession with irony and mining sincerity for memes. "Free Bird" and "Simple Man" may be ripe for parody, but they form the melodic backbone of the album, standing as its most enduring songs. One lick of the five minute guitar coda is enough to stop me even trying to critique it and just enjoy the ride. It may be bias after being so familiar with the big hits, but across the rest of the album, there's little else jumping out at me that elevates Lynyrd Skynyrd against any number of early 70's American rock bands. A couple of light cuts smell suspiciously of throwaways: "Mississippi Kid" feels like Skynyrd going acoustic for the sake of it without having a particularly good song to back it up, and "Poison Whiskey" stumbles over one too many re-treads of a quickly tiring riff. Earlier, there's some great musicianship but the songs themselves feel lacking, rooted in bluesy and swampy riffs without really progressing beyond them. The sound quality doesn't help. "Gimme Three Steps" has a fun riff and injects some energy into proceedings, but the production is awful: everything seems to be pushed to the limit to the point that even the cymbal crashes are riddled with distortion. Because of "Simple Man", "Free Bird" and "Tuesday's Gone" (another epic ballad with the band's lead instrumentalists taking it turn to showcase their skill), this gets an automatic three stars. While there's nothing outright offensive across the album, there's nothing else here to lift it above those three tracks, so this one just misses out on a 4.

Never really listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd before, but that tight knit driving rock beat is right up my street. Some seriously funky riffs in here! Shame about the 7 minute track lengths. Really like the vibe but it’s possibly too heavy on the classic 70s American rock sound for me to really get into. 3/5 - Cool songs, but probably won’t listen again

I thought the only songs I knew from this album were Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird, but I quickly realized I've heard this one many times. A kid I used to work with at the local pizza place had this on repeat every night we closed together. It was nostalgic to hear it again. I still love those two songs the most, but they're all pretty good.

I wasn't really the biggest fan of this one. Not bad, just not really for me. I love classic rock, but the southern version with more blues influences (what I like to call "Deep Fried Classic Rock" just isn't usually my thing. "Black Betty" by Ram Jam being a notable exception.

I always had an aversion to this band, but I don't think of my reasons were ever good. Honestly, the piano work is the best thing about this album. "Things Going On" fucking rules, and "Tuesday's Gone" will forever be the 'Happy Gilmore' song, to me.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: The gash

This is like 70s classic rock in a bottle (maybe because half of the album is their greatest hits). Overall the sound was a bit too bluesy for me. However I liked 'Tuesday's Gone', and 'Simple Man' is my top pick.

Nice, but gets a little boring for an album

Better than I expected

This generator really said "PLAY FREE BIRD" and I was like "yeah okay" lol legendary

## General notes: Really solid album, mixture of hard hitting rock songs with more relaxed blue moments. Pleasant sounding, very competently executed and overall very enjoyable. ## Song by song - I Ain't The One: Riff heavy rock. Hard rocking guitars. Grooving. Raspy voice, alcohol smelling sounds. In all a solid offering. - Tuesday's Gone: Rock ballad 101. Acoustic guitars, a hammond. Knew this one from Metallica's version. It's very similar. Emotional, melancholic and bluesy. Really like the singing on this one with the slight yodeling and overall whisky infused belting. Two songs in we're already into three stars rating territory. I'm surprised! - Simple Man: Hard rocking slow song. Not that interesting, save for the dynamics of "soft part heavy part". This is from 1973 so maybe it was more innovative ATM. - Missisippi Kid: Stripped down blues. Really well interpreted and enjoyable. Got distracted, don't have any more comments.

Fantastic. Some real classics and the rest are very good. Classics: Freebird, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps.

"Free Bird" is a real classic and I believe that this album could be much better for me some years ago. Nowadays, I have more references and some little music knowledge to classify this album as a kind of repetitive classic rock and roll. Not a bad thing, but nothing special.

Album with lots of familiar classics that defined some parts of a generation. Always nostalgic when hearing these tracks, but not going to be a part of my permanent rotation

5/10. had some good songs

I don't think that I have ever (knowingly) listened to an entire Lynyrd Skynyrd album, and it wasn't terrible. I found myself dancing a bit to even some of the songs I didn't know, and I appreciated the bluesy-essence sprinkled throughout. Overall, the album didn't excite me enough to want to add it to my library though.

pretty generic classic rock. i certainly like it, but it's suuuuper saturated which leaves a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. oh well

Pretty decent country rock. Much more interesting than the Eagles, making a twangy 12 bar blues compelling. Freebird is overrated

Better than expected

hell yeah, haven't even listened to it yet and I know it's 5 star because I have two songs already in my liked songs from this album The last free bird was sad though because the guitarist just gives up right at the beginning It actually was like a 3 out of 5, solid classic songs in there, but the rest are mediocre. I'll give it a 4 out of 5 for freebird

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would.

grungy acid wash genes + some surprisingly palatable pop rock vibes. Free Bird is the clear standout here.

Thanks

Yeah okay

OK. I don't hate it and I don't love it. It's just OK

Liked simple man. Not hugely into the rest. Too old school rocky.

Good album, would like to drive through the desert to it

that one song is good

I can see why they shaped the rock back then but songs are a too long for me and I lose context. Best Tuesday's Gone.

You know the songs.

Eerste album van Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973), een band die mij totaal voorbij is gegaan op Sweet Home Alabama na. Southern Rock meets Blues meets Country. Hoogtepunten Simple man & Freebird 3+ ster.

so9me really nice songs, but bit samey

Free Bird og Simple Man trækker den op på 3 stjerner.

Super listenable, freebird is always good, not the most spectacular of albums but wortha listen.

This southern hard rock stuff is not my scene at all. However, this is better than I expected. There's some bluesy stuff, some energetic guitar solos - but the strongest parts are probably the soaring rock ballad type tracks, like "Tuesday's Gone". The different styles are staggered, so you get changes in pace across the album. It's a strong album, with good musicianship. Still not really to my taste, and I'm not sure I'd revisit in a hurry. 3.5

Not a lot of songs, but some very long songs.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Things Goin' On Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Good authentic southern rock. Crazy that this was their first album and they basically defined the genre so effortlessly. Not crazy about Free Bird, but overall a great country rock record. Not my favorite genre so it gets a 3, but a strong 3 for sure.

Actually better than I thought

Zaczęło się fajnie, później country :P

I hate everything this band stands for, but this is undeniably CLASSIC rock music. Simple Man is A+. 3.5

It's good classic rock. That's about it.

Sydligt blues-rock, nede på jorden, flere kendte sange

I like free bird…

Ehh I didn't really get much from this. I know Free Bird is legendary, but, the southern rock didn't do it for me here.

very hunkadoorie vibes. Sounded fine but nothing too special really my jam

Ah, I see we've stumbled upon the corner of country music that I don't like: the American Roots Rock corner. Whilst listening to this album, I'm plagued with visions of the American flag, bald eagles, tubby red-necks with sun-damaged shoulders and vomit-inducing facial hair, the word "FREEDOM", cheap and shit beer, incest, and geriatric wannabe-rockstars. That is the demographic for this album in my view, which, I'm sure, is why pronunciation instructions are needed.

All those annoying southern rock songs from the classic rock stations compiled in one place . . . for me to poop on!

i didnt like the style so much, but thats just me

A genuinely great Southern rock debut, which makes it all the more annoying to rate. Eight songs. Four of them stone cold classics. "Simple Man" is wise, warm, and timeless motherly advice wrapped in a gorgeous guitar melody — the kind of song that makes you briefly forget everything you know about the people who made it. "Free Bird" closes the album with nine minutes of escalating guitar heroics that somehow never overstays its welcome, which is more than can be said for the ideology the band would later wave around on a flag. Producer Al Kooper believed so little in "Simple Man" that Van Zant physically escorted him to his car and told him to stay there while they recorded it. This is the most correct creative decision anyone made in 1973, and also a useful metaphor for how to handle opinions you disagree with. Gary Rossington celebrated the iconic cover photo by immediately vomiting on the sidewalk. Honestly, the most relatable moment in the band's entire career. 2 out of 5. Three stars cheerfully awarded to the music itself, which didn't ask for any of this. Two immediately reclaimed on behalf of a flag that should have stayed in the history books.

Free bird is so annoying and ruined this entire band for me so thank you us hockey

Overall I found this quite boring and mostly just wanted a lot of the songs to end. Simple Man was the highlight, and obviously Free Bird is a classic.

Me aburrió. Genuinamente no entiendo por qué está. No destaca en nada realmente.

4/10 Knowing the name Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as a couple of their bigger hits (although more in passing than with any level of depth), I was hoping for something that would send me down a rabbit hole and inspire some affection for southern rock, a genre that I have no real connection to. From the off, there was at least a bit of interest piqued by the swagger and attitude of the band. They seem a tight unit with a decent level of groove to their playing and, while Ronnie Van Zant isn’t a great singer, he does at least have a bit of grit and charm to his delivery. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long before that initial interest started to fade. For much of the album, they come up with a chord structure, or riff, largely based around standard blues progressions, and then just stick with that for the entire duration of a song, with riffs often just endlessly repeating. And they don’t like short songs either. Boy, oh boy do they like to drag things on. It’s not that any of it is overtly bad. The performances are good, and they have a decent groove as a group, but ultimately, it all felt rather bland and lacking in the requisite charisma to really hook me in. Even the soloing felt uninspiring, like they would pick a riff within a solo and overplay it, before switching to another and overplaying that one too. There’s a bit in Free Bird where the guitar solo is two notes played for ages, and frankly, when a guitar solo doesn’t engage, it gets boring very, very quickly. I was toying with a slightly higher rating for this, because I didn’t actively dislike it, but ultimately, I came off the back of the record feeling… more or less nothing. Which is why I ended up where I did. A meh score for a meh experience. I Ain't The One - A cool swaggering southern rock start. It’s got some decent hooks and a cool attitude, but the underlying musical structure and main riff does become a bit repetitive after a while. There’s a decent groove to it and the mix of guitar lines work reasonably well. It’s a decent enough kick-off, but it’s not really grabbed hold of me just yet. Tuesday's Gone - On to a ballad now that’s quite meandering and is definitely way, way too long. I decided I’d about had enough of this and then realised I was only half way through. It’s quite a basic track that’s cheesy and fairly bland, not offering much in the way of development despite its length. It feels like Bob Burns was trying to inject as much drive as he could with his drums, but this just drags on and on and on. Boring. Gimme Three Steps - Back to something with a bit of swagger again, but it is another that’s decent but doesn’t set one’s pants on fire. In fact, it kind of sounds like the kind of song that Hells Angels would line dance to. It’s ok, I guess, but it’s quite repetitive and basic without offering much development or depth. Cool enough riffs, but over-used and nothing particularly standout or charismatic about any of the performances either. Simple Man - Simple Man, simple song. The same three chords the whole way through a six minute song. Yes, they change the intensity of the presentation during the chorus but boy, oh boy, does this get old fast. It’s slightly too slow paced and the relentlessness of the band playing essentially the same thing round and round for so long just doesn’t inspire me at all. I don’t think Ronnie Van Zant is a particularly good singer either. He’s not bad, per se, he’s just pretty average, and a song like this when the focus is intended to be more on the vocal, he sounds fairly exposed. Things Goin' On - There’s a bit more range to this with the use of different instruments through different sections, but the underlying structure is still very basic and repetitive. It’s also quite rhythmically stilted and that honky-tonk piano is way too loud. It just feels a bit blues-rock by numbers, and the fairly bland soloing doesn’t help it that much either. I’m really struggling to find much to hold on to here thus far, to be honest. Mississippi Kid - I quite like the effect given by the three guitars here. I love a bit of old-school delta blues, and this recalls something of that sound, but I’m not quite buying what they’re selling in the same way as those old school blues players. It is a touch on the repetitive side, but that kind of works for this and it’s not excessively long, so that works in its favour. It’s not bad though and it’s probably my favourite track on the record so far. Poison Whiskey - This is a pretty cool riff and that swagger connects a bit better here. I think the vocal has the right amount of slur and attitude to it too. Again, thert=e’s just too much repetition of the cadence of the central musical theme here, which makes it tire quite quickly, but as with the last track, at least it’s short so it doesn’t drag things too far. The piano solo is pretty cool though. Free Bird - The same chord structure for 9 minutes? Yay! Again, I feel like the vocal feels a bit exposed, the repetition drags it down, and it’s too slow and drudging. It must be boring as fuck to be a non-soloing player in this band. It gets way better half way through when they pick up the pace, with improved rhythm, drive and intensity, but just when it starts to get good, they open the floor to a widdly and uninspiring guitar solo. Good god, it’s a boring solo. Stop repeating yourself so much! How on god’s green earth this was voted the 3rd greatest guitar solo of all time, I’ll never know.

i cant really believe this is a real band and i also cant believe they're this old

"Free bird" is a classic song, very effective. The rest of the album is what I imagine truck drivers listening. 2.5 / 5

yawnnnnnnn i hate this kinda rock sorry

4/10, todo el álbum muy monótono. Temas MUY largos (9 mins!!) y todo mismo ritmo, me dio mucho sueño. Siento que no sobresalió ninguno

too country for me

It was fine. I think the aspects of this album I like are outshined by the fact that other albums do them better (e.g. songwriting, grooviness, guitar work, etc.)

Feels like a pretty generic country rock album to be honest, kinda like the whole thing is mostly filler before the one famous song right at the end. None of it was bad by and means, it even had some alright moments that were a somewhat interesting blend of country and prog rock. But literally nothing really properly grabbed my attention until the very end. Maybe that's because I already knew Free Bird, and so I just spend the whole album waiting for it, or maybe it genuinely is just that boring until the famous song. So regardless of how biased I was listening to this, that was just my experience.

So dull!

Fuckin hell, free bird but also big racist yikes here

I was most pleased when it ended.

free bird stabil, rest aber nicht meine art von country musik

Sureee!

There's a lot of very well known, dare I say obscenely overplay, songs on this album. Because of that it just sort of faded into the background for me without much of an emotional response. I will say that once I reached the "CD bonus tracks" in the Spotify list I shut it off. When I am enjoying something I let them play. So that was an indicator to me that I was over it and happy it ended.

what was going on bro.

Dad rock.

Intro to songs are too long, seems average / not interesting southern American music. Not bad, just don't like the genre, free bird is good tho.

Shit. I hate that the creators of some of my favorite guitar solos appear to have been racist assholes, by reviews and other accounts. Can I love the sinner but hate the sin here? I (hopefully) have grown from beyond my own southern roots, so I hope the same would apply here. Going with my music heart and not so much my political heart on this one.

I was relieved when Free Bird faded out. Mostly bar band tunes with stretchy repetitive solos.

This album has two of the greatest rock songs to ever grace my ears and that is why it is a tad disappointing that everything else about the LP is just ok to me. This southern style of rock is one that I feel like has invaded my life for so long as an American so finally sitting down and listening to an album fully drenched in that feeling helps me appreciate the highs like free bird more but makes me a tad more harsh on something like gimme three steps which I just think is ok. Not a bad album just one I can not get into as much as I wish I could. Fav tracks: Tuesday's Gone and Free bird

Probably a 2.5 - 2 or 3 stonkers, plus Freebird, but a few bluesy run-of-the-mill snoozers too.

Rewatching season 4 of Buffy, and today's episode just happened to be "The Yoko Factor". Weird. Anyway, I think I may have been born on the wrong side of the Mason-Dixon line to truly appreciate this. It's by no means unlistenable, but if given the choice, I'd probably prefer not to listen.

This was fine for what it is, but not for me.

feels like you need to be born and grown in america to fully enjoy this album. i liked the 'free bird' song. not much of country rock fan. on my first listen, i did not like this album much except for one or two songs in it. as of 9th april 2026.

La verdad no me mato, hay dos canciones que me gustaron pero no tanto

It was not bad, and I didn't know that free bird was produced by them, it's just not my cup of the.

man i feel so american. pretty cool, but just... so american. maybe not really my thing? free bird was cool though. i think im supposed to have some feeling on simple man and gimme three steps, but they really just went in one ear and out the other, none of them getting added to my playlist. i liked tuesdays gone. still, cool to hear one of the first big country rock bands. they formed out of Jacksonville can u believe that

Basic music for basic people.

ZZZZ Poison whiskey. Ese fondo de piano de Jazzz, algo de country. Quizás no estoy en el mood. Voy a escuchar ASMR

Solid southern blues/rock and featuring the epic nine minute Freebird, this album should be up my street, but unfortunately it comes with a big red flag - literally in this case. Lynyrd Skynrd (probably the only band named after a strict PE teacher) made a thing of using a confederate flag as part of their stage set and on album covers. They also had a beef with Neil Young’s song ‘Alabama’ and wrote ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ as a response, saying it was unfair to blame the whole of the South for slavery. Given that their music owes a huge debt to the delta blues, this is a disingenuous stance to say the least. A plane crash in 1977 killed lead singer and front man Ronnie Van Zant, two other band members, their roadie and the two pilots of their charter plane. The surviving members reformed the band 10 years later with Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny as singer, but carried on using the flag until 2012, dropping it for a while and cravenly restoring it for a while after ‘fans’ complained. Giving this two stars purely for memories of Freebird always being played at school discos that I went to as a kid

Zone out quite a bit.

the 1 extra star is for the 5-minute guitar solo in free bird, and that's IT!

4/10 Hörbar, aber langweilig Auf lange Zeit monoton Nicht begeisternd 1 Song gespeichert

God, now I'm realizing how much Free Bird sucks, album doesn't help. 2/5

It's alright. It's pretty standard classic southern rock. I never understood their fame. For years I always thought they got big because of the crash. I've heard better than them and I've heard a lot worse.

Bud Light Rock. Free Bird is class

Don't have much to say about this. It's fine I guess, just not really my kind of thing. Maybe in another life where I'm a truck driver in Texas.

Yeah... It doesn't include their biggest hit so maybe another album to go in the list? It all seems a bit self indulgent 9 minute free bird. Meh really, didn't inspire.

There are 7 of them??????? 90s looking album cover. First of all, "'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd" is not IPA and so I don't know know to interpret it. Like what are the 's for? The actual pronunciation is supposedly [lɛnərd skɪnərd], so I guess they got the gist across. Might as well have named themselves Leonard Skinnard if they weren't so obsessed with Y. But I do like that they thought to name the album after a pronunciation guide, anyway. Respectable decision. LS are basically a country-ish version of their sister band LZ, two extremely hated bands (by me - extremely loved by the masses, which doesn't help their case). You'd think the +country feature would make them worse, but I find they're actually a bit better. A cleaner sound and some little piano ("keyboard") bits in there. The songs are very long though, and also 70s "southern rock", so there's no way I'd ever be liking it. 'Free Bird' has a lot more to it than I realised (this is not a compliment).

not too bad 2.5

Not for me

está largo y muy rahhh

Типичный американский рок 70-х. Наверное нужно вырасти в Алабаме чтобы нравилось такое

I feel conflicted about this. There were some songs that I really loved, but the majority of them I just couldn't get into. I think giving this album two stars is too low, but giving it three stars is too high.

Released that I don't really know much of Lynyrd Skynryd beyond Sweet Home Alabama. This is a very underwhelming album, not sure why it would be in 1001 that you MUST hear before you die, it's just not that interesting. The rockers are OK (e.g. I Ain't The One and Poison Whiskey) but the slower jams are a bit boring (e.g. Simple Man and especially Free Bird). Not good, not bad, just a bit bland.

I tried with this album. A few popular songs on here but they tend to miss with me. Allman Brothers is more my groove, not Lynyrd Skynyrd...

I’m giving this album an extra star for “Free Bird” and “Simple Man.” The rest is extremely straightforward, boring rock & roll which is just not my genre.

Geit eso

Unwichtig.

Stark 2a.

Idk man, Skynyrd has never really been my thing. The album has all their early hits. I enjoyed Mississippi Kid, hadn't heard that one before. As a southern raised kid, at this point the endless guitar squeels of Freebird just feel played out

Just not really for me.

Okay reminded me of the OB too much

total dude stuff

The hit songs are good. Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, and the ever-imitated and parodied Free Bird are songs I enjoy. Greatness? No. The rest of the album is flat-out bad, as is every other Skynryd song I have ever heard. Nope, for me this doesn't belong on any list of essential albums.

hahhaha omg this the band who played sweet home alabama? thats crazyyy. BRO WHY IS FREE BIRD 9 MINUTES WHO NEEDS 9 MINUTES???? heard they were/are racists and they look like it lmao good god. Parting from that problem for a second, the album name is absolutely hilarious. I like I Ain't The One and Things Going On. Thats all i have to say

First listen I thought that’s ok let’s give it another go. That’s when the rot set in. It’s just forgettable country rock, average at best 1 star for the album and 1 star for freebird

Great guitar tones

I guess I have this out of the way now at least. Also given this album’s reputation, I figured there’d be at least a few other good songs besides Free Bird

A true American Classic--despite often racist lyrics and with many concerts and albums adorned with the Confederate (pro slavery) flag of 1860's US, which some people still hail today. Yet, some of their tunes are undeniably classic Southern rock when you ignore the racist lyrics. 2 stars for being racists and pro-Confederate South, but a classic 70s work nevertheless.

Is every Lynyrd Skynyrd song like 18 minutes long? Or do they all just feel this way? 3 stars, -1 star for racism.

Ohan tää nyt aika sweet home kalanti, saatana-osastoa paikotellen. Silti pieksee eilisen hevosjazzin heittämällä. Välillä yllätin itteni nyökkäilemäst.

good sound, a bit more variety for me

I liked Simple Man and maybe Poison Whiskey (I Ain't The One was ok too)

Not my style but good overall

Soube bem ouvir mas não senti que fosse memorável

I knew the instrumental from Tuesdays gone. not really my vibe I give it a 4/10

Not really my jam

Review - The songs I already know are good but the rest are terrible. Also these guys are racist. Rating - 3/10 Need to hear? YES

Never was a Skynyrd fan, nor of that gruesome Southern Rock. Ok, this is a debut album, but highly praised for the musical prowess and especially the guitar solos. I found most of that quite boring, simple, and repetitive, especially the end of Free Bird. And on top of it all, this obnoxious southern attitude.

I’m not a big fan of this kind of music. It’s southern, swampy, and boring. Sweet Home Alabama is a fantastic song but much like Stairway to Heaven I’ve heard far too many times. People rate this down because of perceived racism. Well, we’re talking about the South in the 70s so, of course. I rate albums according to the quality of the music not the measure of the man.

3/10… rock / southern rock / *1973

Not a country fan

Legendary but not my type

mid 💔

Sounds like the result if you sun-dried a kilo of blow in an open barrel of Jack Daniel’s and gave it a Confederate flag

I think my first introduction to Tuesday's Gone was playing it in Guitar Hero: Metallica, it was great and I still enjoy the song. I don't know though, of the 8 songs I personally only like 4 of them and the experience of the rest packaged together in this album doesn't work for me. I'd rather listen to the ones I like outside the album, which is different to other albums where I may only really love 3 or 4 tracks but will still listen to the whole thing. Also, maybe I'm biased towards other groups, or it could be a generational thing, but I have a hard time believing this is the best southern rock/blues/country album that everyone must listen to or they're missing out.

Simple Man...

En del feta riff, men som vi alla vet är det bara simple man och free bird som någon bryr sig om. Samtidigt så måste de få minuspoäng för sin besatthet av sydstatsflaggan

Rating: 5/10 Technically good and not without its merits. But I don't care about this band. At least they saved the best for last

Decent listen, love the hits + tolerate the rest. The sound is pretty iconic while also being a little meandering, very likely won't listen to it again 4.8/10

When i aint the one kicked in i thought i might like this album, but by gimme three steps i was distinctly bored. It just plods along. I’m sure if i only listened to an individual track it might be alright but a full album ….no thank you. It’s therefore an interesting choice to put free bird last in the running order. The clear highlight but so late it cant save a dull album

Partly heard before Saved 2/8 Top track: Free Bird

Ist einfach nicht mein Genre, ist mir teilweise ein bisschen zu langsam 😅

Enjoyed the soft rock

Meh, I guess free bird is alright

Expected to hate this and was not disappointed

Sorry, but this is too 'classic rock' for me. There's a couple of good ones on here, but not something I'd listen to regularly. Favourite tracks: Tuesday's Gone, Free Bird.

I don't have any good reason for not being more into this, since a lot of it is kinda in my wheelhouse, but it's just okay for me.

I only like freebird

See some people saying there's three good songs on this. I don't even think too much of Simple Man... just trudges through the same three chords - a lot of root notes and finds few interesting melodies. So for me that leaves only two good songs.

I am convinced everyone is just pretending to like Free Bird. It's fine guys, but there are a billion better guitar solos.

Free Bird was ok but the album in overall didn't strike me at all. Middle of the road music.

I feel like I shouldn’t have liked this, but I actually knew and liked 3 songs. I didn’t like the rest. I knew Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird.

Kind of hit and miss for me, the singles aren’t bad, but some songs are a little sluggish (I’m looking at you Free Bird). Standard high 2 stars, not something I’d pick to spin, but most of the hits are good enough to carry the rest of the album.

Imagine if country met rock and you'll get this album - not bad, just not something I'd find myself listening to again

This was so fine. Free Bird slaps but otherwise not something I particularly was interested in - this took two sittings to get through.

Not a huge fan of southern pride stuff and possible racism. I don't care what was accepted at the time. Musically they are not bad and I enjoy the song Simple Man

Clearly only on this list because of Free Bird

Don't trust an album on which the best songs are the ballads. I have a feeling I'll say that a lot during this challenge. Tuesday's Gone is pretty good, though, and to a lesser extent I enjoyed Simple Man and Free Bird. On a couple of the better songs, Ronnie van Zant sounds oddly like Gary Brooker.

Y’a des moments de guitare que j’ai bien aimé mais sinon je retiens pas grand chose

average, not really my thing

found myself very bored throughout most of this album, it kinda felt like i was just waiting for each song to end. southern rock really isn't my thing. i did enjoy 'tuesday's gone' but apart from that nothing stood out to me at all. i kept waiting for it to get better but ultimately every track kind of blended into each other leaving little inspiration or desire to carry on listening. 'mississippi kid' and 'poison whiskey' were unenjoyable for me and the fact they were back-to-back made it even more of a tough listen. maybe i'm being harsh and it wasn't that bad, i just wouldn't choose to listen to it again (apart from 'tuesday's gone'). i did like 'free bird' as well but it was awfully repetitive for a track that's almost 10 mins long - it felt like it was stuck on loop with the same guitar riffs/solos over and over again.

bro I was waiting for free bird and then free bird wasn't even that good

początek dobry ale pozniej.... 2,5 bym dal

What a snooze fest!

free bird is one of the worst songs of all time

Got through this by thinking about what I would listen to when I was done.

Free Bird is an all-timer I'll give them that

Proto butt-rock. OK riffs. Inoffensive but dull. Reverse delay drum intro on the opener was neat. Mostly recycled blues riffs and vapid lyrics. I guess the dueling guitar Freebird solo is pretty cool

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BIRDDDDDDDDDD YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH Me aburrió.

Hmm, nah

Проходной альбом. Не бесит, но и не восхищает

Demasiado yankee.

Solid 2.5

Rock ok

hard to relate to this album, some nice guitar riffs and drums but that's about it

Only heard their biggest hits before. An unremarkable album, I even forgot how long Free Bird is before it gets to the interesting part 2/5

Freebird

It is unusual for so short a single album to house so many iconic songs, I'll give it that. the songwriting is fairly strong, even if the lyrics are generally vapid. That said, Southern rock is generally a turn off for me- as soutehrn pride is generally just veiled backwardsness and racism. I don't strongly detect that here, but I just don't vibe with it. 2 things: Freebird is somehow not nearly as annoying as it should be given its ubiquity. Also, though kind of dunderheaded, Simple Man has a decent core message and is clearly the best tune on the record. It's not bad, but it's not for me.

Ok, not their best. 2.5 stars

6 songs that aren't Free Bird or Simple Man, plus Free Bird and Simple Man. Yeah most of the record didn't do much for me, and though I do like Free Bird, in the modern meme space I can't really take it seriously. For Simple Man, though, I have no reservations; this track is excellent.

i can really only tolerate this kind of music when i’m pretending that i’m in a deleted scene from dazed & confused. ‘tuesday’s gone’ is alright i guess. and i can’t lie…i kinda do like ‘free bird’ (only for the “lord knows i can’t change” refrain) even though it being the hold music at my psychiatrist’s office does make it a bit triggering for me. this is not an album that’s worth caring about either way.

I started to listen to it but then i didn’t feel like it. it’s just kind of noise idk it doesn’t connect with me at all.

Pretty dull for the most part but Things Goin' On is fun and Free Bird is good of course.

Today the generator said, "Play some Skynyrd." So I did. It was okay. This style of rock doesn't do much for me, but it was fine to have it on in the background while I did other things. Standout track: Tuesday's Gone.

Fun. I'd only ever heard the last track.

Ooooooh them duke boys are at it again!!!

I can smell the Bud Light and F150 exhaust fumes from this album. One good song and that's it.

Overblown, off-putting American swamp rock. Conjures denim jackets, rollies and petrol (sorry, gas). If you burst into patriotic tears at the sight of a flag, seek this album.

I expected to hate and I didn't hate it but didn't love it. Free Bird is a tune

Ehh not for me. V male, v American. Honestly I just find this kind of music boring.

I like "Free Bird" but the rest felt meh to me.

I’m expecting to either hate this or think it’s mediocre. I was right it is mediocre. Nothing excited me really. It isn’t bad but it’s just sort of there. 4/10

Was an okay album short album. Still enjoyed it. There are definitely recognizable highlights. But likely was an album that would’ve meant more to me had I been around during its inception.
