Reviews (page 11 of 13)
it was ok not ever listened to before
Southern rock is really just the worst kind of rock, isn't it? Freebird is good when you have 10 minutes to spare, though.
It's funny and wild, you can feel the teen naïve nature in lyrics and melody.
I liked it more than I wanted to
A fine album, nothing bad about it but nothing spectacular. Some classics on this one though.
This band is good enough, but Southern Rock just isn't my thing. There are definitely some well known tracks on this one, so it's at least worthy of 3 stars.
Mid
It's fine but a bit too straightforward and unexciting for me
Has free bird, that's about it
Good. 3/5
When I hear Tuesdays Gone I don't think of Happy Gilmore but of Dazed and Confused, and the party wrapping up at the end of the night. Definitely some good tunes on this album.
This is one that’s difficult for me to rate. On one hand, I really appreciate the band’s prodigiousness at playing their instruments and crafting songs. They sounds like total pros on this debut album, and the solos totally rule. There are also some classics on here; “Tuesday’s Gone” and “Free Bird” are top-notch. But on the other hand, Southern rock as a genre has done damage to rock as a whole. It’s done damage to American culture, for godssake. I feel like it would be difficult for a lot of future people to listen to and enjoy it wholeheartedly. Maybe I’m just in a bad mood today. I do like Lynyrd Skynyrd better than the goddamn Eagles, at least. But, ugh. Best I can do is a 3 and withhold the “must-listen” designation.
I listened to this album so damn much in High School. Tuesday’s Gone is still one of my favorite songs.
cowboys if they had good music taste
Good. Listened to it a lot when we were young. But now i find too much white trash
Not the biggest fan of Southern Rawk and the good old boys but was pleasantly surprised by this. Particularly enjoyed the slower / epic ballads Simple Man/ Tuesdays gone. Particularly impress given its teh debut album Fell into a mini wiki worm hole reading about the band and how all the original members per the album cover are now dead - mostly either via cancer or plane /car crashes - yet this weird frankenband version still lives on - who could not be more distant to the original line.
You do, in some circumstances, have to hand it to them. There's some real solid songs here, and Free Bird last is a triumph of album sequencing unlikely to be beaten.
Very consistent, many guitar riffs, quite consistens songs between each other. Nice album but quite boring to listen to it all for me.
A couple of well know tunes sandwiching a fairly decent album.
This album has the dubious honour of being home to the fuckboy national anthem that is "Free Bird", but the tracks are all decent jams that make for a pleasant listening experience that has failed to make a major impression on me.
Half of this album consists of 4 of the most iconic songs ever made. The other half makes me want to kill myself.
fine for grilling burgers , a little samey. i do like simple man
To be a trucker on route 66
3.5 stars here
Pre-listening thoughts: FREEEEE BIRDDDDDD Post/during listening thoughts: this is 100% what I expected. I’m so neutral on this it’s not even funny. I really have no opinions on this at all. Sorry to disappoint I know EVERYONE was just LONGING to hear my essay on this album. 5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird (it’s too long tho) Least fav tracks: maybe Mississippi Kid?
Southern rock with a side of racism
I liked it, not something i'd choose but a couple of really fun tracks in there. Free bird to end was a nice surprise (i didn't look at tracklist before playing)
Fav song: Free Bird I was gonna give it a 2 stars because I'm not exactly a big rock n roll fan and nothing was sticking out to me much about this album (with the exception of Simple Man). Then Free Bird came on!!!!
Enjoyable.
I like this southern rock genre and this group do it well. One of those groups I had heard of at the time but lack of money meant they were not on my priority list and so I'd never listened to them. Love the style and the typical guitar riffs and the voice is great for the style. Would listen to more of them.
Is that really how you say it?
Correcto
This well and truly was me going yeah what ever that’s okay until Freebird which is so fucking awesome. It’s a shame these guys are probably gigantic racists or something.
3.5
Free Bird is a classic. The rest is good, but not really my thing.
Southern cookin’
Give me some
Good album. Timeless.
good music, stupid lyrics, i guess these guys have always sung about stupid shit.
eh its alright, probably wouldnt listen to again, free bird solo is cool YNN
Patchy album. First four tracks are strong - side two goes downhill until we get to the classic ‘Freebird’.
First time I heard the whole album, wack name (I first thought). Holy, it's the one with 'Free Bird'! I've been listening to the song for ages and never knew it's from this album. Free Bird is still the best song, but I really enjoyed the demo version of "Mr. Banker". Great blues rock track 🤘
It was ok. Tuesdays gone was the standout for me. Would i listen again? Unlikely
Leh-’Nérd ’Skin-’Nérd), is filled with familiar tracks and Southern rock hallmarks, yet it strikes me as a good, though not outstanding, listen. Some songs I already knew—Free Bird, Tuesday’s Gone (through Metallica’s cover), and Simple Man (from Shinedown’s)—stand out as highlights, but the album as a whole doesn’t fully grip me. Instrumentally, there are some real gems here. Billy Powell’s piano work on Things Goin’ On adds a welcome flair, and of course, the legendary guitar solos on Free Bird still hit with impressive power. However, Ronnie Van Zant’s vocals don’t quite match the punch of the music. His voice is pleasant but feels like a weak link against the energy of the band’s sound, where a stronger vocal presence might have elevated these songs further. Standout Track: Free Bird Score: 3/5
++: Gimme Three Steps, Things Goin' On, Poison Whiskey, Free Bird +: I Ain't The One, Mississippi Kid +-: Tuesday's Gone -: Simple Man 7,6/10
Already listened to this yesterday and it's not my favourite even thought I admit is a very strong debut (especially considering some of them were teenagers). I see why Free Bird and others songs are so ubiquitous in American culture and the whole twang rock is cool as fuck, but it smells like old white man music and not in a good way - something about it is overshadowed by the reputation of the band as the quintessential American pride shit.
Play Free Bird! This was pretty good - probably not something I’ll revisit, and not really my style, but not bad. “Free Bird” was the only song I had heard before.
Listened Before? N Clearly, this is one of the most influential southern rock albums of all time. It isn't really my thing although I've gone through periods of liking songs from it separately. Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man... an incredible track list. 100% deserving of the list and I'm glad I got to hear the deep cuts. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Gimme Three Steps
FREEEEEE BIIIIIRD JEEEEEE superhittien ulkopuolella ihan ok levy. 3/5
I expected Steely Bland v2, but it was a bit better than that. The album takes a while to wind up but Simple Man was very good, and the Free Bird at the end is good too. The in-between songs don't do it for me - some of them were pretty terrible while others were just meh. 2.5/5, but rounded up
Freebird carried the album with a few decent songs otherwise but nothing above a 3 is justifiable.
classic album I haven’t heard in years. Several truly classic tracks.
Roadtrip music-I enjoyed it but didn’t find it hugely memorable apart from Free Bird, which is the standout track for a reason. ‘So you wanna be a boxer’ from Bugsy Malone owes a lot to Mississippi Kid, surely?!
Listened in the day and thought it was a fairly average album. Hard rock not so much my thing. Listened in the evening after red wine and did lots of air guitar to Free Bird and it lifted the whole album for me. Poison whiskey also a stand out song. Everything else was a bit meh.
It was good but then it became too much southern rock for me
I love the blues sounds on this album. Not as much the rockabilly, though I don't dislike it.
Honkytonk blues at its finest - best ending to an album possibly ever
Classic Southern rock. Memorable sounds and of course “Freebird.” A good listen.
Simple Man is one of the best songs of all time but the rest of the album just doesn't hit as hard unfortunately. still good though
There are some decent songs on this album, like 'Free bird', but overall southern rock music isn't my thing. I wouldn't listen to it again, but I certainly understand its appeal. 3 stars
Not my kind of music but I can certainly appreciate that it was a very good record for the time and still holds merit today. The melodies are kinda catchy and it was reasonably enjoyable to listen to. Album run-time was perfect too.
There’s some fun bass lines here, though they got repetitive over the course of the album. Some real great piano. At times it’s boring or a little too “hillbilly” for my taste, and there’s a few moments where the music becomes cluttered and clunky. Freebies still isn’t really my jam but it does fit very well and is a pretty epic way to close the album. Overall, the album is solid but not great. 6 out of 10.
1 - the one / 1 2- tuezday / 2.5 3- ztepz / 1.5 4- man / 2.5 5- thingz / 1 6- kid / 1.5 7- uuhizkey / 1 8- free bird / 3 9- banker / 1.5 10- zouth / 1 11- gone / 2.5 12- three / 1.5 13- free bird / 3
Didn't hate this, to my own surprise. Of course I was already familiar with a lot of it. Gotta call out the bass because that was really good.
6/10
If this is classed as a groundbreaking rock album then it’s kinda lost on me as I found it fairly mid. I don’t think I’ll remember a single song on it, but it was fairly inoffensive so it gets a mid rating
3.5 - 3.75 for the obvious highlights
Some classics on here -- solid 1970s rock vibes.
Free Bird
I feel like realistically, this album is pretty good, but I’m just not a fan of the southern rock genre. Apart from the end of Free Bird (which was INCREDIBLE) I was pretty much just apathetic towards this album.
All around a pretty good vibe. Tuesdays Gone is great and Free Bird is a phenomenal closer. Other than those the other songs were just a bit more interesting than wallpaper. 3/5
Good but not my generation.
I've heard most of these songs before and the ones I've heard were good, I guess there's a reason I ha ent heard the others. Overall decent album. 3/5
I just watched a YouTube video about them performing on the Rolling Stones tongue. Fun coincidence. But in general, I'm not a fan. Tuesday's Gone is an amazing song tho
This was fine I guess, didn't love it. Especially not the piano tracks.
A short, entertaining album between blues, country and rock. I liked the boogie-woogie style piano in some songs. I especially liked I Ain't the One and Free Bird. It was fun to listen to.
I'll give it to them. Front loaded with classics.
Fav: Free Bird Least Fav: Mississippi Kid Some nice easy-listening rock music, with Free Bird being the standout song. It wasn’t bad at all but also wasn’t incredible. Regardless, I liked it enough to listen to it again.
it’s like. adjacent to things i like highlights: i ain’t gone, things goin’ on, free bird (aug 19 2024)
Pretty rocking.
3☆/5 08.14.2024
Really good album
I have never been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. I do like some southern rock or music with souther rock influences, but Skynyrd has always been a step too far for me. However, I was surprised how many of their "hits" were on this first/debut album, and I do understand why people do like them and why some of their songs are so popular.
+1 for free bird
Good dose of pure dad rock, sometimes they sound like Status Quo, sometimes they sound like Led Zep, mostly they sound like some good ole boys from Florida.
#56 - Dad rock supreme

Nett, aber nicht mein Genre
If you don’t love this album, you have a heart of stone. It is such a great classic
Had its time and place but it doesn't do much for me. I had an older cousin who rode on the back of a Harley Davidson everywhere who loved the heck out of this music but I never really warmed up to it. Performances are undeniable. Very tight group. Definitely an influence Southern Rock/Country Rock, so it probably belongs on the list, but I cannot see myself seeking anything off this album again after this exercise.
pretty good
3.5
Crazy how many of their top hits come from this debut album. They really went downhill fast huh? Outside of the hits though, this was just okay. Nothing saved from this one. I think they suffer from being overplayed to the highest degree. If they weren't so saturated on radio and stuff maybe I'd like them more. Kinda between a 2 and 3 for me. hard to choose honestly, wish I could give half stars.
decent 65/100
Mostly just so embarrassed that I never realized ‘Tuesday’s Gone’ was theirs. Sorry, mom!
It's alright. Free Bird kinda drags on. At least it changes around the halfway mark.
I think on any other Sunday this would get a 2, or maybe a 4. But I'll give it a 3 for giving me the Black Crowes.
Ok.
This was fine.
Too country for my tastes, but it's okay.
This album is difficult because it has some amazing songs like Free Bird and Simple Man, but then also some generic trash
I‘m from germany so I am NOT familiar with their music, besides sweet home alabama. I’ve never even heard about free bird before (not that I‘d know about at least), but anyways - I liked this album and some of their songs. I did not read their Wiki before so I could listen to this without prejustices. My favorites are indeed free bird, mr. Banker and down south jukin‘
Notable tracks: Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird, Gimme Three Steps
This album has a nice selection of cozy rock music from the 70s. Liked songs: Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man and Free Bird
Idc how it’s pronounced.
Fun southern rock album. I enjoyed every song on the album, but Tuesdays Gone and Freebird are standouts. I considered bumping up to a 4 but I don't really see myself listening to this much.
Very "country" rock. It was fine, but nothing felt too special, apart from the birth of the World's Longest Song (or at least how it feels), "Freebird."
I really didn’t like the first song and the thought “oh my god I hope this isn’t some overrated rubbish” popped into my head but y’know I warmed to the album by the time “Free Bird” rolled around.
Tik Tok ruined Free bird.... This song deserves all of the love it gets, but why did I never give it the time as I'd heard the solo over 50 million times. The entire journey through the song is incredible. I'm writing this as the anticipation builds to the solo and then when it hits. Screw tik tok why has it destroyed the soul of this song into a meme. On the rest of the album, its pretty good, I like guitar
Really only knew Lynyrd Skynyrd from the plane-crash and this hasn't really changed that. Just music I don't care about.
OK, southern rock.
This was pretty solid just not something I listen to all that much.
Pretty fun but nothing extraordinary. Free Bird. Great for driving.
Ok.
Dreading the connotation this band has and their use of the confederate flag because fuck hate and racism. But just like I did for Kanye, I will rate this on musical merit. This is very much dad rock, a couple of decent songs, but I'm getting tired of this genre. 3*. Highlights: free bird, tuesday's gone
A couple of classics in there. Not so sure about the rest.
The good songs are fantastic, the rest are only average.
Great album. Maybe the songs are a little long but I almost don't mind. High 3.
FREE BIRD
Easy southern blues rock
Best Song: Free Bird. The way this song progresses is brilliant, capturing perfectly how freedom can feel both vulnerable and powerful. Musically explosive, all parts played with an eager forward lean. For a song that could easily be a cliché, it feels like it has enough of a soul to remain relevant and listenable years later. Worst Song: Things Goin' On. What idiot decided to follow the one song with an ounce of sincerity and introspection with this candy-striped, ragtime bullshit? Overall: An immensely frustrating album. These boys are clearly talented, as they have a few songs where they drop this Confederate flag-waving, honky-tonk bullshit and tap into something that feels uniquely, positively southern American. Simple Man feels earnestly humble and has a haunting vocal track, and Free Bird has this electric, on-the-road-to-freedom feeling that is almost unmatched in rock. Such a shame that they cock it up everywhere else.
It’s great but some songs drag on
FREEEEEE BIRDDDDD YEAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A dad rock classic, more country influence than I expected. Free bird baby!
Free bird, free bird, free bird 👍
Classic southern rock
Sweet Home Alabama isn't on the album which is a positive. Couple of good songs. Quite a bit of filler. It gets a passing grade but barely.
There's nothing wrong with this album but this kind of music just leaves me absolutely cold. Utter dad rock.
Ok sure
I liked this but it didn't blow me away. Tuneful blues. I can see how they add to the picture, and Free Bird is pretty joyous.
The musicianship really stood out, but at least on a first listen or two, only a couple of songs clicked.
Not my fav genre, but I can tell that this is really good southern rock
Good rock! Gets a bit tiresome towards the end of the album. Glad my fave track wasn’t the one I knew 3.1
3.5
It’s all about free bird really, nothing special about the rest of it
Never can really get into Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's good overall, but not my top from this era.
Meh
Fun, classic, not my usual vibe but felt good and soulful
Sounds like most basic bands from that time and period with very little going for them in my opinion though the music wasn't that bad
I gave this one a lot of play time in the early to mid-80's, particularly side one. Younger me would have given this a 4 but older me, while I enjoyed the revisit, feels like it's a bit played out and will give it a 3.
Freebird one of the best songs of all time.
shitkickin
Debut album. Correct.
Good guitar work (when you have seven guys in the band, including three guitarists, you're bound to have at least one decent guitarist) and pretty much all of their best tracks on are this album. I used to be a fan of this band, the whole culture and atmosphere around their music is kinda depressing and crusty.
Some of the guitar on this record is brilliant, yet it all feels somewhat predictable
Breezy southern rock. Overall it's just a very agreeable album. You could listen to it at a cookout, or while lounging around, or at a coffee shop, and it wouldn't be out of place at all. "Free Bird" never gets old to me; it's the perfect closing track. It's a solid album all around.
Classic songs. 3 stars
Country-fried redneck buffett-party git-off-mah-land with a budget
A couple of great tracks, Simple Man & Freebird, the rest are OK
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now; And this bird you cannot change.
Standard southern-twanged classic rock. Good riffs, and the unparalleled Free Bird. Not something I need in my regular rotation, however.
Decent
Some songs I liked! Some I already knew but did not know who sang it. Thanks.
When this album popped up, my first thought was “ugh.” As I said in a prior review, “Southern Rock” really isn’t my thing. But I have to admit, several of the songs on this album are pretty damn iconic. So even if the genre isn’t my favorite, I have to credit the songwriting and musicianship that gave so many of these songs such lasting power. My “ugh” has changed to more of a surprised “hmpfh.”
Pretty fun album. Classic rock n roll!
A classic.
I'm sure this is wonderful but that is two in a row I have trouble finding a way into. It's a classic and well loved and was one of those "every home must have one" albums in its day...just not one for me.
Pretty solid
Ok so, I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much from this. I’ve always viewed Lynyrd Skynyrd as a lesser version of the Allman Brothers Band. This mostly comes from my ignorance of the depth and history of both bands. That said (and while doing my best to overlook their use of the Confederate flag for many, many years), this was a good listen. I was tempted to think that this was included in the book because of “Free Bird.” And maybe it is. But that doesn’t mean the rest is bad. It’s not. There’s excellent guitar work and a very well-defined country sound for a debut album. They might have unintentionally peaked early though. I haven’t heard any other album of their’s so I say that with hesitation. But “Free Bird” is one of their two ultra famous songs (“Sweet Home Alabama” of course being the other). Where do they go from there in terms of energy, emotion, and impact? I don’t know. And I probably won’t ever listen to more to find out. Three stars. Standout tracks: I Ain’t the One, Gimme Three Steps, Things Goin’ On, Poison Whiskey, Free Bird
Few good tracks but a bit too hillbilly for me
“Tuesday’s Gone” & “Free Bird” are iconic bangers. The rest range from good to forgettable. 6/10
sitting through the whole album and then hearing the start of freebird and levitating
A true period piece. The sound of an era. "PLAY FREEBIRD!"
Free Bird and Tuesday's Gone are the best tracks, some of the rest are pretty good, some not so.
Freebird! Need I say more.
And what a hell of a ride it was, y'all. 7,5/10 Highlights: Tuesday's Gone Simple Man
Easy listening vibe from the Southern states.
I welcomed this album popping up on the generator yesterday as I've always been uncertain as to where I stand on Lynyrd Skynyrd I'm still uncertain .....
Listened to this while playing ISS Vanguard. This was kind of what I was expecting it to be. As a pianist, I can't tell you how many times I've heard "play Freebird!" Not bad at all, but nothing I'd actively search out again in the future.
Fun first album
I’m not a huge fan of what this band stands for socially. But oh my god can they rip. Pioneers of southern rock and this album really shows why. I enjoyed listening, even if I may not go back to it too often. 3.5/5
Classic rock sound with a country influence. The successors to CCR.
Najbolje pjesme: 1. Free Bird 2. Simple Man 3. Tuesday's Gone -> pocetak pjesme top, poslije se ipak malo oduzila 3.5/4
I’m not super surprised that Tuesday’s Gone and Freebird are the two most enduring tracks from this record - they’re still the freshest. The rest is a lot of good ol’ boy blues rock, which is….fine.
Great, fun, album!
Free Bird really is something else... 5/5 stars. The rest of the album is Alabama without the sweet home feeling. 3.66 overall to elevate it over most other 3 star ratings of mine.
favorite song --free bird too much guitar but not bad
It’s Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd Exactly what you’d expect. Solid, straight down the line. Some great guitar playing and sounds and nice organ work. The well known ones are my stand outs - Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird Not much more to say ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not great, not terrible
Had never listened to these guys past Free Bird. Don't feel like I missed out on anything. But then again.. Freebird!
Gotta say, didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. I think it helps it doesn’t have their most well known song (Sweet Home Alabama is good, very good, but I could go the rest of my life without hearing it again) but it does have what I think is their best song (Tuesday’s Gone.) There’s a couple here that are inessential but plenty of good stuff.
Leonard Sceonard can suck a bag of 14 poops. I once made a personal goal to never hear the song Sweet Home Alabama again. I’m very happy it’s not on this album, but am realizing that’ll probably be on one in the future. That being said: that guy can play the heck out of a guitar. I like Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, and of course, Free Bird. I generally felt 2 stars about the rest. I haaaaaaaate Simple Man. The three tracks I liked, the guitar playing, and the fact that so much of this album was actually a kick ass solo from Free Bird, was actually enough to pull this up to a begrudging 3.
This is always pushed forward as one of the greats but it seems pretty average Rock? Maybe it was groundbreaking then. That is apart from Freebird but 'one track does not an album make' as my daddy used to say....
All in all the album is just average.
Full of rock boogie tunes. When it first came out we played it so much we got tired of “Free Bird” before the end of the year.
Enjoyed some. Not a big fan of southern rock
Okay. Not a big Skynyrd fan but appreciate the chance to listen to it again. Deserves a following due to the bands dedication to their craft, musicianship and song writing. But won't be going to my desert island.
Proper classic here with one of the greatest songs of all time on the track listing. Can’t argue with that. I enjoyed it. More soulful than I imagined. Not just rock.
Was kind of surprised to find I enjoyed the songs I hadn't heard before more than Freebird and Simple Man.
Found this was a lot of fun most of the time as long as I didn't take it too seriously, decent riffs, ticks the expected boxes. There's something about LS that gets on my nerves though, can't quite place it. Maybe the vocals, or the slight country undertones. Not sure it's justified but can't shake it. Probably would be a 4 for other similar bands but it's a 3.
3/5
Several classics on this album. Not altogether bad. Sounds like classic 70's rock music.
I dig the southern rock from time to time.
Cant lie
This is a pivotal album in a genre I don’t care for, too coiffed to rock, too Stones-fixated to be yacht rock. That aside, Firebird is pretty good! Simon, I do owe them for one of the nerdiest heckles I’ve noted, as related by an acquaintance: the Chicago rock band The Butcher Shop Quartet played a storming cover of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”. A beat after the finale, someone shouted “FIREBIRD!”
Some nice moments but mostly forgettable
- The southern accent and over singing, while part of their appeal, is also annoying. - Free Bird is as epic as ever.
There was a time when I absolutely loved this band, and even though that was a long time ago I still enjoy them. Fun album.
Nicht so meins. Ein paar Tracks aber ikonisch.
Highlights: I Ain’t The One, Tuesday’s Gone, Free Bird. In a nutshell: the go-to album for a 70’s movie soundtrack. A pleasant listening experience but not spectacular. Overall: 6/10
Rockig, aber trotzdem melodisch
Just ok. I recognize lots of songs from this album, but I've never been a huge Skynyrd fan.
Not bad, but I've also heard half these songs a million times. The ones I didn't know were fine. 3/5
Nice to let it play in the background but not that interesting to me.
classic but not my style
God introduction to southern American guitar
Nice as background music, pretty decent instrumentals. The harmonica is fun!
Good southern rock. A classic album.
a few classic songs and then a ton of what i describe as swamp rock that has not aged too great in it's sound
Only song I really liked was free bird
A bit too yeehaw for me but certainly better than AC/DC. Also why are there so many of them? I like the last song though.
Some bangers, but not mind blowing
I could go without the confederate flag bullshit.
Classic southern rock, nothing fancy just good music.
Five stars for Tuesday's gone and free bird. Other songs are cherry on top
Idk man, Watergate really bothered me.
bastante bueno .. se llevaban a matar
not an album I thought I'd ever end up listening to (though, this is nowhere near the first time I've heard 'Free Bird'). I'm not the biggest fan of somewhat southern tunes and extended guitars solos but some of the tracks actually turned out to be bangers tbh. favourite track : 'Simple Man'
I can’t read
I guess this is Southern rock? It gets a little tiresome after awhile, and I've never been a Freebird fan.
Load of great tunes, amazing for a debut album. You can tell they had all this in their repertoire for years before recording. Too bad about the racism.
Not my favourite type of music normally but I do love Free Bird!
why is this so dad rock
Has the three hits that are great. Awesome bass playing which appeals to me. But some of the songs sorta seem cliche in their structure and don’t really tickle my fancy.
PLAY FREE BIRD. Memes included Free Bird is dope, it’s not even long and the guitar solo is sick. The rest of Skynyrd does nothing for me and I always thought the real snoozer was Tuesday’s Gone. (2.5/5)
B- I Ain't the One 3 Tuesday's Gone 3 Gimme Three Steps 3 Simple Man 3 Things Goin' On 3 Mississippi Kid 3 Poison Whiskey 3 Free Bird 3 Every song was good, but nothing was great. Nothing made me feel anything.
Passabler Blues Rock.
Free Bird is on my top 10 most hated songs of all time list! Even so, I like some of the rest of the album. I guess I'll go 3 stars. My opinion could be tainted since I just listened to MJ Bad
Nice and chill, easy listening
Not bad, more country than folk?
Freebirdm many songs known. Good shit
Good songs but they don't really speak to me. Simple man is very good, frisson inducing.
Classic Rock Album, good to hear where a lot of music is based from. Good listening experience. Listening to it over a cheat shoulders workout
3.75
fuck lynyrd skynyrd. free bird is great though. just a standard butt rock album (mississippi kid is ass)
Not all dad rock is born equal. Imagine hearing freebird for the first time in 1973 and ascending to guitar heaven.
Southern rock. Of zoiets. FAVO: Things Goin On, Poison whiskey, Free bird
Not bad, but not my cup of tea.
In a vacuum this is a 5 out of 5. I’m the real world, 50 years of near constant AirPlay has left a lot of these songs feeling a bit threadbare for me.
An album with several 5 star songs, that gets brought down due to some forgettable 1-2 star songs. It has some harsh transitions, and on some songs the blues feels like a bit of an afterthought. But overall it's easy to see how this album influenced the rock music that came after it. It's worth a listen as the 5 star songs are legendary.
Some iconic guitars in there, otherwise ok.
Free bird und simple man slayen, sonst hört es sich nach toothless racist with a banjo an
It's Lynyrd Skynyrd
Probably not gonna be on my regular rotation but I did enjoy it. Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird are excellent songs
Not for me but they are good at their genre
Son I say son turn that skynyrd up
When 25% of an album is Tuesdays Gone & Freebird, the chances are that the album is a good album. Other highlights include Simple Man, which is one of the stand out tracks. Tuesdays Gone is outstanding, great ballad and Free Bird is... Free Bird This is either going to be a very low 4 or a very high 3. PS i am still on Neil Youngs side
OK album.
Fav song : Tuesdays Gone
There are some real classics on here. Although the album is relatively short, paradoxically each song feels too long. Instead of adopting the “less is more“ approach, each song outstays its welcome. They are pretty easy to listen to, and great background music, but Free Bird might have had more impact if it had flown off five minutes earlier.
Yeah, Southern Rock isn't my bag at all, but it is an impressive debut. Freebird is fun, maybe a minute too long.

really pleasant listen but I didnt particularly like it which is why I cannot go above a 3
Great songs like Tuesdays gone and of course the classic Freebird. Great songs. Just wish the rest of the album held up. Would prob give it 2 stars if them two songs weren't on it.
Pretty average Wasn't great but wasn't bad, had a few good tracks but most were just ok If you like blues and early rock absolutely give it a listen
It smells like Otto's jacket.
Lekker hor!
Didn't enjoy it much, but can't really deny it deserves to be on the list, if just for Free Bird.
So what’s it say about me if I admit that I kinda liked this album (minus FB, of course)?
Rock sureño buenrollero pero sin más.
Southern rock has never been one of my favorites, but this was more fun than I expected. Somehow never knew they sang "Tuesday's Gone" and although the style as a whole isn't my favorite this one won me over
It's not something I'd come back to, but I did enjoy a fair chunk of this. It's hard to deny the general craftsmanship and heart, and the southern bluesy elements are quite enjoyable. Unfortunately alot of songs ended with the overstuffed and indulgent instrumental passages which are rife throughout this era of rock. Fav Track: Simple Man 3
Up and down on this one - enjoyed the country elements, a good part of it was laid back but still tight, and the vocals had a lot of good character. Still, there's plenty of jammy noodles to be found - not my preferred flavour! Also seems to be a lot just wholesale stolen from blues that they maybe shouldn't have touched. Soft three and a half cause I'm feeling generous today. Fave track: Simple Man
Solid
All right let's get this over with. Though to be fair to these guys this album is stacked with hits. Its only a question if you like this genre. If you do, this album is heaven. If you don't mind it, its fine. If you hate the genre this thing is dogshit. For me this is somewhere between a barn party with my uncles and being waterboarded. So a rating is hard to come up with. Would I come back to this album? No. Did I hate it? No. Did it make me feel things? I guess? FREEEEEEEBIIIRRRRRRDDDDDD
So much talent, and a well-produced bluesy rock and roll album. Just not altogether something that tickles my fancy.
Got two good songs rest pretty dull
I'm generally not into southern rock but this album I can fw. They mix in a lot of influences that really diversify it, with lyrics that sometimes touch of the typical southern rock cliches, but often transcend them. And Free Bird... memes aside it's just an insanely epic song. Loved it in Guitar Hero too lol
There may be more successful albums from Gabriel's catalog, sales-wise or hits-wise, but this is Peter's best album overall. Intruder, No Self Control, I Don't Remember, Not One of Us, and Biko are all brilliant and dark expressions of an artist reaching his pinnacle of artistry. And that cover by Hipgnosis, stunning.
This was alright. I'm not a southern rock kind of person, but there are things here that transcend that and are much more enjoyable like Simple Man, and I could see myself liking Free Bird if it was some unknown song I'd never heard of. Oh well, at least it's fun to play in Guitar Hero.
I have actually never previously heard "Free Bird" - i know right...
Good
Very Led Zep/Stones - solid, good quality, 1970s rock. Enjoyed the faster songs with twiddly guitars, not bothered much about the slower ones.
If you like Lynyrd Skynyrd then I guess you’ll like this? I enjoyed. Great track to end on too (Free Bird). Anyone else forever associate this with Forest Gump now?
Only know this band as one of THE Boomer bands and through Free Bird. This is kind of the definition of classic rock. Much like other rock albums the slower songs really kill the momentum and enjoyment of the album (most of the time) The slower songs here aren't that bad, but I am still not a fan. It's interesting that most of their most popular songs come from this album. What is even more interesting, but not super surprising is that Free Bird isn't even their most popular song (according to Spotify.) It's Sweet Home Alabama. Makes sense since Free Bird is a 9-minute song. This is a high 3
Five stars for Free Bird 2 stars for the rest
A fun classic rock album, though most of the songs dragged on a bit past the point I was ready for them to be over
A classic rock album
Solid and enjoyable. Wanted to give it 3.5 but can't and it wasn't quite good enough to round up to 4.
Songs 1-4 off to a good start. Songs 5-7 took a real nosedive. And then of course Free Bird and Simple Man are certified hood classics
Not my taste, but free bird and simple man are classics.
Pretty decent. I'd obviously heard Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird many times before, but the rest were all new to me. Most of the other tracks were alright, couple of honky tonk ones in there which didn't do it for me. Wouldn't listen to again but didn't dislike it. 3.5*
I mean, free bird. 3
I had never listened to a full Lynyrd Skynyrd album before, and I was fully ready to hate on this as generic 70s dad rock...but you know it is actually pretty great. It knows what it is and does it well, can't fault it for that. Tuesday's Gone always reminds me of the end of Dazed and Confused. Free Bird rules. Does this mean I like generic 70s dad rock better than generic 90s alt-rock?...guilty as charged.
A couple of absolute epics on this album. But 3 epics don’t make an amazing complete record . A couple of country bumpkin duds on here damper this one a bit.
Leonard Skinhead, I mean…yeah that’s what I mean. This album is great for picking out a big ol bucket of bullets. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a fan. It seems as though this is their best album because after this one, they only made one more hit song (their biggest) in their like 30 year career. So, take that for what it’s worth. The album itself has some decent things going on. I like when they use the keys and they can sink into a nice groove. Once they get all rednecky, that just ain’t the one for me. Free Bird is an epic, so I’ll give them that. Overall, some classics on this record but ultimately If I had to listen to Lynyrd again today, I’d be wishing this Tuesday was gone.
Some massive hits on this album. I have officially discovered that if you don't listen to Freebird for a very long time that it actually does become good again. An obviously talented band playing a collection of decent songs. This is definitely a good album, and if I was into Lynyrd Skynyrd's sound I'd even call it great. The highlight is the guitar work, multiple fine guitarists in this band.
