3.5 Stars. Freebird!
There were some fun moments, especially discovering the guitar solo in’Free Bird’ that’s been used in a bunch of movies! But overall it was too durgy for my liking.
Both Simple Man and Free Bird appear on this album - songs still featured daily on Classic Rock radio I like the diversity of styles that keeps the sound fresh in this collection Mississippi Kid is a fun inclusion!
Before: This should be a decent listen, though they are not my favorite artists and I don't love this type of music. I've never been a big fan of southern rock, even though I am a life-long southern, and came of age during its heyday. However, there is a lot to like about Lynyrd Skynyrd's music. In fact, I have at least skimmed through all their albums in recent years when putting together my yearly playlists. I think Tuesday's Gone is my favorite track on this album and Free Bird of course is a well known classic. I have those tracks ranked 39 and 52 respectively in my 1973 playlist which consist of 78 songs from that year. I'll probably rate the album 3. After: While listening I decided to add Gimmee Three Steps to my 1973 playlist as well. So yeah, I'm giving it a 3, as it's pretty enjoyable overall but I would not normally chose to listen to this album on my own. I do love the album title. I think it portrays a sense of humor which scores a lot of points in my book.
Pretty good album. Freebird is a killer song
Favorite songs: Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird
Not a fan but it was ok
Solid southern rock album. Good song writing and guitar work. Recognised a few songs in addition to Free Bird, which was surprising. Shame they might be racists.
Freebird does not an album make, but this is one where I’ll remember the guitars more than the voices of the lyrics. Tuesday’s Gone was a nice treat, never got Three Steps but maybe it fits their audience more.
First impression: yuck Lotta hits on here. Good representation of cheesy 70s music?? "Tuesday" ballad is very cheesy. "Mississippi Kid" def the weakest song here. This had to be in the same vein as a bunch of other artists copying Robert Johnson during this time, but not really getting the blues (although the blues structure is solid). And, of course, "Free Bird" End impression: better than I expected. it’s a 70s rock album
Bit better than I expected but then my expectations were pretty low. Favourite tracks - Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man.
I mean it's fine
Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Tuesday song was cool. Everything else sounded really similar.
Now I know what Freebird sounds like. Now I will never have to listen to it again. Sounds like The Guess Who by way of Florida.
I enjoyed it. It did not disappoint me, it gave me what I expected to hear. But nothing extraordinary except, of course, Freebird. Simple Man caught my ears, it was a beautiful track.
It's good, just not my thing I guess, that solo from Free Bird sure is crazy tho. Fav: Simple Man *** my favourite from yesterday's album because I'm doing that now it seems: First of the Gang to Die The World is Full of Crashing Bores Irish Blood, English Heart
Being a fan of both classic rock and southern rock, I’m well acquainted with the hits and they’re great. Didn’t care too much about the other half of the album though. 3.5 stars.
It’s Lynard Skynard. It’s Southern Rock. It’s got Free Bird. Any questions?
Freebird!🤘 Tell you what, I love me some Freebird, classic song with iconic guitar solo, it's got flaws (11 minutes long..ugh) but who amongst us can claim perfection. Impressively large number of hits on this album. Great classic rock we grew up listening to on 105.9 WHCN, all that's missing is the intro by Picozzi and the Horn. The down side is that other than those great radio hits the rest of the album is actually pretty bad, leaning more Country than southern rock which isn't automaticly bad, but is pretty bad here. Still enjoyed the album overall.
Get it, glad I listened to it. But probably not going pick it out again.
Glad to get this. I now have a benchmark for bang average.
Solid album beyond the hits
Wouldn’t have chosen for myself but did enjoy
80/1001 In my ratings I’ve never factored in how shitty the artists are in their personal time. Hell, I don’t even factor in their lyrics. This was an enjoyable album. More so than many on this list. Reading the reviews, maybe I should be listening in secrecy. It’s fine. I seldomly listen to Skynyrd anyway. 6/10
It's fine. FREE BIRD!
not my cup of tea, but it was good, better than what I thought Lynyrd Skynyrd was going to be
Top 3: Simple Man, I Ain’t The One, Free Bird
It’s not awful. It’s not really my jam. Free Bird is a rocking track.
The only song I really know by this band is Sweet Home Alabama, which is not on this album. So I came at it with fresh ears. I enjoyed the southern sound, particularly on the simpler songs. I also enjoyed some of the guitar solos. All in all an enjoyable listen. I will be listening to this a few more times to see if it grows on me through repeated plays.
Whole album kind of just feels like a warm up to get to Free Bird, which rocks obviously. But the rest of the album can't help but feel a bit disposable.
pretty boring outside of free bird
i enjoyed the lyricism on this album. it’s not the usual genre of music i gravitate towards, but there was enough flavor to keep me interested.
My mom’s highschool boyfriend once got on top of the announcer’s booth at their highschool football field right before the homecoming game and played the entirety of Freebird. I aspire for that level of Southerness. Cut/improve Things Goin’ On, Mississippi Kid, and Poison Whiskey, and make this band less racist, and this would be a pretty perfect album.
3 stars for speeding to freebird
I'm putting aside a bunch of context related to some members of this band probably having some regressive politics. When I was a teenager my friend was taken by his parents to see them and during the free bird solo they unrolled a giant confederate flag. This would have been in the early 2000s. 'Heritage not hate' is bullshit and people can fuck right off with that nonsense including this band. That aside, this album is early 70s far guitar riffage and I really enjoy Tuesdays Gone. It's worth hearing if somehow some kid is not familiar with why people shout free bird at concerts
A good album, I liked Simple Man, Things Goin' On and Free Bird the most.
2.5 RYM
Album sounds great - multiple guitar parts, you hear some flange, some Leslie and other early effects. A couple clunkers, but epic close with Freebird. Bass lines are great in every song (played mostly by Ed King who'd eventually become the 3rd guitarist). Produced by Al Kooper who famously crashed Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' recording session to lay the opening organ hook.
Good sound. Not as many standouts as I was expecting. 👍Freebird
with the three tracks: Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird, this album is already a certified hood banger.
Rock, 1973 -> 3
I get the appeal for southern rock, and this is certainly a gem of the genre, but it's not my bag. I can tap my foot to it and certainly enjoyed the nostalgia of some of the hits, but this is not something I'd reach out to put in my CD player. Enjoyable enough to hit 3, I wouldn't hit stop, but can't lift it higher.
Their debut album. Rock. This is an exercise in separating the artists from their art. These guys were arseholes, however they could write, play and sing some good songs. Free Bird is the stand out track on what is a fairly solid debut album. Some catchy licks throughout.
Nothin' wrong with some nice Southern rock. Probably tends a 3.5 tbh but that's ain't real and 4 is too high.
It's pronounced Liz-Zard Wiz-Zard. 6 flame birds out of 10 wizards
Ich glaube ich war nie richtig Fan von diesem Southern Rock und das Album hat mir das gezeigt, auch wenn paar Tracks natürlich iconic sind… Es is einfach noch nie wirklich meins gewesen.
How many Y's in Lynyrd Skynyrd sounds like a pub quiz question. Their debut is plentiful in Southern Rock with Freebird being the standout track, even at over 9 mins. Good debut worth listening to and this was the first time I'd heard the album as a whole.
I’m partial to a little bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd, so was quite happy with today’s offering. And it was fine - “Simple Man”, of course, is a great song, and closing out your debut album with a track like “Free Bird”… well… The rest of the album, however, is filler. Filler which is tolerable, but filler nonetheless - as it turns out, I think I’m quite partial to the hits of Lynyrd Skynyrd, rather than the whole lot.
I am a being of simple tastes: give me an album I suspect I'm not going to enjoy, but add honky-tonk piano to parts of it, and you are guaranteed to get, at least, an ok mark. I did only listen to the original first 8 tracks though, not the demo versions now tacked onto the end, because I'm a purest (that's definitely the reason, it's not because I couldn't face 1 hour 15 minutes of classic rock). I liked Things Going On and Mississippi Kid a lot. Free Bird is too long and only interesting when it ups the tempo... unfortunately it then makes my think of car commercials. All in all, a much better than I expected: 3/5
classic 70s tunes. my dad would've enjoyed this.
Would give a 4 for the number of classics if the overall sound southern rock didn’t bore the hell out of me
Early 70s American Blues Rock - it does exactly what you'd expect. An enjoyable listen. It has Free Bird, which may or may not please you!
It’s not bad, just not really my jam.
Good throw back fun though not always my cuppa
WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER?
Full disclosure: I have never been a big fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd. That said, the album was well produced, the songs were tight and solid rock and roll, and I did smile a little when Free Bird played. It is good stuff, just not exactly what I am looking for. Neil Young has stated that he regrets some of the digs he took at them, and I think that's where I am. I respect them because they are solid musicians and performers even though I don't connect with them.
нормально
Freebird saved this from a 2
Simple music for simple men. “Simple Man” is itself a banger though I never noticed before how its message contradicts that of “Free Bird”.
Traust gubberock, igjen......
Good one
Solid southern rock.
me venía miando todo el trayecto a mi casa mientras escuchaba el disco y cuando por fin llegué y corrí al baño empezó free bird y tuve una experiencia religiosa. tres estrellas.
I guess they’re my favourite band named after a gym teacher. It’s real good guitar and Ronnie Van Sant’s amazing vocals soaring over them. I love Simple Man and of course Free Bird. Won’t be reaching for this often but it was a pleasure to listen to. Probably a 3.5.
Like it 3/5
has some nice songs, some ok
Southern rock isn't my favorite subgenre, but I can't deny "Tuesday's Gone," "Simple Man," and "Free Bird" are classics. I generally found the rest to be failry forgettable though, and don't care for the ever-present southern twang. 3/5
Solid
Sabías que el guitar hero se iba a poner jodido cuando aparecía free bird. Gran album. No pretende de más, y en lo que hace es muy bueno. 7/10
This is my first time hearing "Freebird" all the way through. Bands should play it at more shows.
I’d be content to never hear Free Bird again. That or some dipshit yelling it out at a show.
It seems that Lynyrd Skynyrd have unfortunately decided to seal their fate early on in their career by putting one of the most iconic (and genuinely outstanding) rock songs of all time on their debut album. Yes, Free Bird is on this album, and that’s basically all most people are talking about. It’s really hard to explain how great Free Bird truly is and how much it eclipses the whole rest of this album. It’s an exceptional song, and that solo never gets old. It just never stops, and this is a trope I really wish was more popular not only in music but art as a whole (although I understand that writing something that expands on one idea this much is insanely difficult). As for the rest of the songs, they’re decent. They’re obviously not even close in terms of quality and entertainment factor, and although some of them (Tuesday’s Gone and Simple Man) are better than the other, none of them feel boring. If you exclude the last track, it’s a fine and pretty consistently enjoyable album. It just so happens to have an insane jump in quality right at the end. 7/10
I knew none of the songs (only known in the US?). What I know is Sweet Home Alabama - didn't know it was from them - thought it was a traditional. Number of people on the photo: 7 Number of people I hear playing: 4
Sick of CCR being really good? Tired of thinking? Want to be an ignorant boob with a confederate flag? They're pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd and they're extremely mediocre. They'll also be overplayed to death to give you the impression that you too should also not think.
Pretty boring country rock up until free bird. Free bird was good
7.5
Pretty alright, bang average with some free bird. Short and sweet enough.
Southern Rock staple. Some classics, some background filler. 3.5 overall
i've heard simple man and im sure ive heard free bird but i cant recall either very well I aint the one was really good and cool and whatever Tuesday's Gone is extremely boring Gimme Three Steps is kinda cool its super southern kinda line dancey which im not a super super big fan of i feel like im in a honky tonk bar lowkey. Simple Man is really good it's a little too long since its just 6 minutes of the same shit but it's pretty fire ill let it pass. things goin on has some really fun guitar going on here! i like it a lot! i feel happy. hes got a good voice. Whoa just found out half of Lynyrd Skynyrd fucking died in a plane crash. What the eff? Ok Anyways i like Mississippi kid. Poison Whiskey is also really good. its funky spunky i like it !!!! free bird is obviously too long but still good i see why its a classic 3.8/5 i liked most of it
It’s amazing how many of the tracks on here are played on the classic rock stations daily. They’re good but not my cup of tea.
nicht ganz gehört aber eindruck is ganz gut. musikalisch abwechslungsreich. paar lieder waren echt gut
Lots of classics, but racists suck. Rating here based on the art and music, but not giving them any more listens.
Some cool riffs and basslines and while it's kind of entertaining, it's not really my thing. I didn't mind it though.
only ok? has a bit of that awkward thing of messing up country & blues rhythm by latching it to rock drums. Tuesday's Gone is a great hook, don't really dig the arrangement they did. the verses of Free Bird are not good but the solo section is cool. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
In the past I’ve enjoyed Skynyrd quite a bit, including a handful of songs on this album. Maybe I’m just simmering with anti-American sentiment but I didn’t like this listen all that much. Guitar stuff obviously great, and I always kinda appreciate the band’s extreme and psychotic approach to systematically practicing and perfecting the art of sounding like Good Ol Boys, but I dunno. Today it was just fine.
Very classic American album.
A damn good album this is. It’s got Free Bird, Simple Man, Tuesday’s Gone. I also despise Lynyrd Skynyrd for obvious reasons. I’ll meet in the middle and give it 3 stars
Actually not a half bad album given my expectations. I didn’t know the first half of Free Bird at all but when the riff started I was like oh wait I know this!! Kind of a shocking moment. This is why I am culturing myself I guess. Kinda sad everyone just knows this band as the Sweet Home Alabama band though because they actually have some solid bangers in this album. But they do also have some more Sweet Home Alabamas too…
Free Bird is definitely a song of all time. To be honest, this album suffers from songs that are just too long. They get boring after a while.
Great highs with some boring stretches, but if this genre is your thing I can see how this would be a classic.
*1973. *Hard to argue with this one - lots of big hits: Simple Man, Free Bird, Gimme Three Steps, and Tuesday's Gone. *Solid album, if you're into this style of Southern rock. *Appreciated and enjoyed, but wouldn't personally revist. RATING - 7/10
Cover 4 Not bad. Free Bird of course is a great anthem. A couple of other songs were good, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps and Simple Man. The others were ok. Not a bad album but I won't likely come back to it.
Southern rock, actually more ballady/slow than I expected
A couple of bangers but otherwise not my typa stuff
Esperaba sinceramente algo más free bird es un temazo y por eso pensé que sus hermanos también lo serían habían algunos regulares, ya veremos como envejece esta reseña y mi percepción más mesurada del álbum
meh
There were some great moments, some great songs, but nothing that really wowed me.
Simple Man is great Free Bird is legendary The rest was fine if forgettable
Lynyrd Skynyrd's Debut and probably their best. 4 Iconic singles, three of which are ballads which is interesting. I feel like Sweet Home Alabama has become their true legacy song but Free Bird is obviously iconic and the solo section does hold up as overdone as it is. Gimme three steps is a classic and what I think of when I think of Lynyrd Skynyrd Sound. Tuesdays Gone and Simple Man are underrated. Solid Southern Rock album from legends of the Genre.
It took till now for me to realize that I haven't listened to a full Lynyrd Skynyrd album till now! Honestly, really enjoyed it. Simple man is one of my favorite songs of all time. I think I've stayed away because they seem to get more radio time than most. But still worth the full album playthrough
Interesting mix of rock and country, maybe a bit bland though? No standout song. 3.4
Not a huge Skynyrd fan so this was alright for me. Didn't hate it but didn't particularly love it either.
As established LS cooks but not enough for me to give this a mid rating
Vc
I said this last LS album - I knew nothing of this band’s music prior to the project. And like the last album, I really enjoyed this one. I loved the Cult growing up and this feels similar in so many ways. I guess I’m a southern blues-rock fan more than I knew. Tuesdays Gone and Free Bird are highlights. The second half is weaker than first and I had to skip Things Going On. I rate based on number of likes and whether I want to come back and listen later. In this regard, 3/5.
Free bird
“Tuesday’s Gone” (their best song) and “Free Bird” are outstanding. The rest of the album….meh. Skynyrd was arguably the most southern of all the southern rock bands, and their regional pride is just as evident here as it would be on subsequent albums. It’s a little heavy-handed at times, but the boys could play—especially Billy Powell.
I loved this album growing up. It’s a great album with solid songwriting and playing all around. However, at some point I really grew to dislike Lynyrd Skynyrd and most southern rock. It all reminds me of “good ole boys”. Probably happened around the time I learned more about the symbolism of the Confederate flag. I enjoyed listening to it again today, but it’s not something I’ll ever seek out to listen to in the future.
7/10 Favs: Simple Man; Free Bird
Southern rock
Great
It's pretty good. It's got quite a few songs I recognize.
Yes, Free Bird is epic. I also like Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man. But one reviewer called those songs (plus Gimme Three Steps) classics. Except for Free Bird, they’re really just greatest hits. Crosby, Stills & Nash have greatest hits. The Marshall Tucker Band has greatest hits. Songs that still get played on the radio. That doesn’t make the songs classics (in the vein of The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc). While I enjoy Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man, I can probably name 500 or more songs I like better. That’s not an insult, it just means they’re good, not great, in the bigger history of rock. This is a good album with one undeniable classic. For five stars, you need more than that.
Pretty good - would be so fun live
Listened over a couple of goes. Freebird obviously stands out..some good 70s rock...not sure it grabbed me. Will try again
where is that one song i know
Whilst there's some really great stuff on here - Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird being the real standouts for me - there are enough misses to drag the album down a star despite the fact it goes out on an absolute high.
Listening to this was like listening to Freebird. A slow start then hit onto an absolute banger 3-4
I thought this was a metal band not knowing they sang simple man (which i love) I knew a couple of songs on here already and it was interesting to find out they sang free bird
Fine rock album. Free Bird almost made this a 4
Very good southern style rock. Tuesday's gone and free bird are highlights on this one, both exceptional songs. The rest of it I'm not sure I loved as much, but not bad overall.
Lekkere zuidelijke rock
Not a big fan of this band, but it’s hard to argue with a couple classics
Tuesday's Gone Gimme Three Steps Simple Man Free Bird
Ok so I don’t love lynyrd skynyrd by any means but this is one heck of a debut album (3.5/5 if I could)
There are some songs that are pretty good on here but the radio has played the life out of them at this point
Early Skynyrd, real classic rock and roll. Not really my taste but this is a good record. “Freebird” is a classic rock epic and the soundtrack of every biker’s funeral.
Won't you flyyyuyuyyyy freeeeeee birddddddd
It was good! Worth the listen, notable songs that I recall and think are popular, but not necessarily something I'd find myself revisiting I don't think.
I wouldn't say I don't like southern rock, but I certainly don't care for it. But Free Bird is one of the best songs I've ever heard so there's that.
Southern rock anthems don’t do it for me but I see the appeal
i didn't want to like this but simple man was good and there's something about that solo on free bird that did make me want to grow a rat tail and drink a coors light
This was class. Obviously adore free bird but lots of great tunes on this record as well. Nothing that made my jaw drop though. if I could give 3.5 I would
Lol
A good rock/blues album with some cult hits. Besides them, the rest of the tracks are just ok.
Pretty good Southern rock, if that’s your thing. It’s not mine, though I read that Lynryd Skynyrd is considered the best of that breed. Supposedly the controversies about them - Confederate flag early on; “Sweet Home Alabama” - are misunderstandings but I don’t know. I’m separating art from artist here.
Some good guitar playing on this big time Southern rock album. Sometimes songs go on a bit too long, but there are enough hooky riffs and solos to keep you in it. While Ronnie’s delivery isn’t a style to grab me in, it also fits the music perfectly. These guys had a unified vision for their sound and every player serves that vision and sound. They can be monumental when at their best, but then the other tracks pale in comparison for me (though certainly not bad). With highlights like Free Bird, Gimme Three Steps, and Tuesday’s Gone, I don’t really need the rest of em.
Look this isn't one of the greatest pieces of human art or anything like that, but it is perfect drunk in a dive bar and everyone starts singing along to "Simple Man"
Amazing how much of this album I knew despite never listening to it before.
Lepszy w bardziej dynamicznych utworach i dosyć nudny w tych wolnych. Dobry początek a potem już gorzej
It’s a jam, with some classics. Overall a solid 3/5.
Very good southern rock.
Good southern rock
Temporary
se fosse qualquer outro disco deles é bem possível que eu não conseguiria me divertir nem um pouco, ao menos esse tem os hits
Taking away Free Bird, this record feels pretty average.
Decent but a bit swampy.
It’s fantastic fun, but this really is the defining album for “ one riff + one lyric = whole song”
pretty good. one song sounds exactly like CCR. begrudgingly have to admit that Free Bird is pretty good when you don't have a classic rock radio station or evil American hockey team insisting that it's the best song ever
Rating: 3.2 Short, succulent, nothing too crazy. Two absolute classic songs, two very good songs and the other four will put you to sleep. Perfectly symmetrical. The buck for southern rock pretty much stops here and I’m not blown away, but satisfied.
Liked this more than I thought I would. Good old Southern rock. I like the bluesy elements.
Great album. The classic Bangers from Skynyrd come from this one. Lots of southern rock and blues influence here and so many groups to come after have tried to emulate this sound, but none came close to them. 3.35 / 5 stars
enjoyable listening experience, but also not something i'd play front to back again tracks i liked: tuesday's gone, simple man
suprisingly okay
Enjoyed this more than I expected to! Clearly very talented musicians.
Pretty good album with a few big hit songs. The whole album has a nice chill vibe and wasn't bad. It's just that I have heard the hit songs a million times and it doesn't really do anything for me. I can sing along a bit but it's just an album that I don't need to listen to again. Not bad, just not my thing.
nice nice, feels a bit generic but I'm listening to too much rock to really know anymore
As good as Southern Rock gets.
Fine if not groundbreaking. Obvious classics like Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird stood out but otherwise washed over me a bit.
Personally its not my type of music. I would listen to some tracks again though. I did instantly realize the influence this album had.
I quite like it when they do sentimental prom rock! Not so much when they do redneck Confederate rock.
It's classic southern rock, and the album has some great tracks- Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Free Bird. But hard to ignore the band's history and the confederate flag debacle.
Rätt tröttsamma låtar efter andra genomlyssningen, men också ett par bangers
Freebird är odödlig, och överlag ett helt okej skönt sound men tyvärr inget annat som sticker ut jättemycket. Stabilt!
free bird's guitar solo alone moves it from a 2 to a 3
Whole lotta guitar noodling, and some surprisingly groovy redneck funk. Much respect to the bassist too!
A classic.
Some okay songs
Me gustó mucho, sigue la misma onda yankee pero está zafable pa escuchar, hay un par de joyitas en el disco
Me gustaron todas las canciones y lo disfruté bastante
leonard skinner
The 3 singles were great but a bit weak besides that.
I was actually throwing around whether I thought this should be a 4 or 5 star album throughout most of it. Such iconic songs and a surprising amount of musicianship. And then I heard Mississippi Kid. Holy fuck, what a terrible song. What the fuck are the lyrics implying? Free Bird is absolutely stellar and I still get goosebumps every time I listen to it, but for Mississippi Kid alone it gets a 3. And, at the end of the day, it is still sort of a generic rock album (and boy oh boy are there a lot of those on this list). Fave songs: - I Ain't The One - Tuesday's Gone - Gimme Three Steps - Simple Man - Poison Whiskey - Free Bird
Bom disco!
Has classics such as Free Bird and Simple Man. The rest of the album is ok if you like country music.
Fun! Lots of rocky musicy stuff. Nothing outstanding, well apart from freebird obviously. Thankfully no SHA!
2,5
Liked it. So much talent
Good ol' Dad rock, can't say anything better. Nothing profound or superbly amazing outside of Freebird. But I enjoyed it. Favourite Tracks: Simple Man, Free Bird Least Favourite: Mississippi Kid
They did it! They played Freebird!
drei bis vier Tuesday's Gone Free bird
Lynyrd Skynyrd. Yes they are a classic rock band, but one I never cared for. Let me check wiki for the reason. Ah yes Blues Rock - not a genre I like. I have never heard a full album of there's and this had a lot of energy and strong vocals but the blues sigh.. the blues...Wait a minute, what is this? Country Rock with "Tuesdays Gone" this is fantastic! Suddenly i'm interested! Simple Man yeeeeah! On no, and we're back to Blue's Rock with Mississippi Kid. Well at least I tried. We end with Freebird, a song I don't usually like but I have to admit it is a thunderhorse of a song, and imagine hearing this for the first time, instead of 1000 x due it to being a staple on Classic Rock radio stations (or any radio station for that matter). I would like to give it 3 and a half stars. But it will have to be three. Perversely, I am thinking of buying this album. High praise for me.
The definition of southern rock.
couple of classics, much of the album feels like the same song over and over again. the album as a whole felt alright to listen to.
Another band that I only know via hits on the radio and in movie soundtracks. Was prepared to hate it but I didn't. Solid three stars.
1) I Ain't The One: Strong intro track. 2) Tuesday's Gone: Very inoffensive ballad, a bit too long for what it is. Tends to feel monotonous towards the end, but works as ambient noise for working or studying. 3) Gimme Three Steps: Arguably has the most distinct "Southern US" vibes. You either like that, or you don't. Personally, I'm generally not too fond of it here. 4) Simple Man: Good (simple) song. That's about it. 5) Things Goin' On: Again, very "Southern" instrumentation, "country" vibes. Again, more of a background noise track, maybe for a bar or a diner. 6) Mississippi Kid: Heavy "rural romanticism", which always risks slipping into kitsch. But it works here. 7) Poison Whiskey: A bit of a strange one. Stronger, more interesting composition than their more popular pieces. Lyrics borderline ridiculous though. 8) Free Bird: For a soft rock ballad, it actually pretty good. The guitar solo feels a bit too stretched out and somewhat articficially tacked on to extend the runtime. A lot about this album works really well. The interweaving of longer slower ballads with more energetic shorter songs provides a good "texture". None of the tracks are outright bad. But I don't consider any of them breathtakingly good either. Like most debut albums, it's missing a thematic throughline, instead coming across as a rather loose assortment of songs. Which is fair enough, not every album needs to be a concept album. Nonetheless I feel that some connective tissue would have benefitted this one in particular. Admittedly not my favourite genre, at the same time admittedly decent songwriting and really good production.
Classic rock, good stuff but not my fave
honestly not bad!
Ok so what do I say about this? I mean the whole 'yeah these guys are totally racist assholes' thing is kind of hard to get past. But as with other artists with problems (and to be fair that's probably like 90% of artists) I'll try to just focus on the music. Fantastic guitars, obviously. I think that's probably what they were most known for. Well that and Freebird. I mean the music is good, although I'm not really a fan of the whole southern rock genre in general. But I do have to say that for a first album, this one does have a ton of what a lot of people would consider to be classics. I'm not sure I'd agree but that's a personal preference. And I think I've heard Freebird enough. Also, why the hell are there so many people in this band? Surely the music they played on this record didn't need 7 people in the band. And their current picture on Spotify has 9 people in it. Why? 3/5
Some bangers, I'm as a free as a bird now.
Free Bird!!
Great album. Very enjoyable and fun.
Better than expected. I actually dig it.
I mean, they're good. It's fine. It's good music. But I just don't find that it has anything special too it. It's blues rock. Poison Whiskey is a bit funkay, which is nice. Also, it has #accidentaljazz at 1:33 Free Bird Bee Frird Beard Fur Bur Feared Beared Fur Bearded Fur Fear did Bur Bear did Fur Did bear fur? idk - most likely, I would say - you can ask him. It's okay, he's friendly :) No, don't touch him! I DIDN'T SAY YOU COULD TOUCH HIM! RUN! OH FUCK NO! AAAAAHHHHHHHH! 3 stars
I've had little contact with Lynyrd Skynyrd before. Of course, I know Sweet Home Alabama. This album is my first real encounter...and it's fun. It's not the rockier songs, though. It's more the more sophisticated songs. I like the mix of rock and country and the Southern flair. It will continue to be heard.
Good album
Simple man, Tuesdays gone & Free bord.
i didnt finish the album. again it brings warm feelings from earlier days.
I do love me some country rock. Not my favorite example, though.
eh
High 3 mainly due to influence on rock and roll, for better or worse. Not something I'd probably listen to again
So so
I'm a Lynyrd Skynyrd hater, I think Neil Young shouldn't have backed doon, but doubled doon, on Southern Man, and I love Play It All Night Long by Warren Zevon. I've been hating from a place of ignorance mostly, I know Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird, but I don't think I've ever listened to a full album. This album hasn't changed my mind, though the music is orthogonal to why I dislike this band. The music's pretty good, but not great, at no point did I want to turn it off, but I doubt I'll go back and listen to it in full again. This album doesn't have Sweet Home Alabama, so I can't knock points for that. It's pretty generic Southern USian rock, which holds no particular cultural resonance for me as an English person. It's fine.
Well crafted songs, dragged a bit but caught my attention more than Electric Warrior did. Probably would have been a 4 if I had a cousin.
Tuesday’s gone made me cry. Listened a few times. Of course the time and place for freebird is always here and now
Hillbilly background music until the behemoth that is Freebird fires up! If it wasn’t for that track it would be a one star.
Really liked the famous tracks but not engaged with the rest.
Very polished country rock. Separate the art from the artist, and this is a pretty great album.
Free bird.
Enjoyed. Slightly overblown in parts, but it has that southern boogie feel, good but not quite as good as little feat, but I will listen again.
3/5
A couple classic rock songs here. Not my favorite band though
It’s good
Better than I would have thought 🤷♀️
3 stars...For simple man
It’s greasy, it’s stereotypical rock, it’s rock for bars. Sure, they were racist rednecks pricks, but damn did they knew how to crank out some killer boogie, and it is surprisingly good for a first album. “Free Bird” is my personal “headbanging in car” gem with Jas a few years back. Hell of a 9 mn long track which instantly made me forget all about those damn two-minute ditties we just had Thursday. I’m a simple man.
The first four tracks and Freebird are really good, but the three in between drag down the quality considerably
Would you like some advice? Just listen to Freebird over and over again for 76 minutes. What. A. Song. The rest of this album is a bit like encasing the finest steak in a load of stale bread to be honest.
This is a very impressive and polished debut record, even if it doesn’t scratch all my itches. I’d prefer if they went full country at the time, because they definitely have the vocals and the storytelling ability. Standout tracks are: “Simple Man” and “Things Goin’ On”.
I’m too much of a Yankee to love when they get real into that Southern flavor. This is especially true on Side B, with the hokey “Things Goin’ On,” which, despite its good intentions, sounds like nails on a chalkboard thanks to that corny ragtime piano, or those mandolins and shit on “Mississippi Kid.” But the songs that have stood the test of time– “I Ain’t the One,” “Gimme Three Steps,” and “Simple Man”– are all very good, especially if you like Southern rock/country rock, although I wouldn’t say they’re perfect songs or essential listening for anyone except to give you some context about the history of Southern rock. What we’re all really here for is “Free Bird.” A perfect song, a timeless song, and one that still blows your mind even if you’ve heard 1,000 times. The worst thing about the track is that it fades out and doesn’t go on for 9 more minutes or just even end properly. But despite that, it’s still one of the greatest songs ever made. I don’t know if you could say the same about (Pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd), even when it’s otherwise at its best beyond “Free Bird”’s perfection. Lynyrd Skynyrd are an important band with a lot of great songs, but no great albums, and if this is the closest they get to a great album, it really summarizes how 50/50 they were as a band in practice. But we still got motherfucking “Free Bird,” so how much can I complain, really? And if my Northeastern ass can love that and still appreciate about half of this record, that has to count for something.
Classic rock album
The extent of my LS knowledge is that they exist, in fact I couldn’t have told you they’re behind Free Bird or even Sweet Home Alabama. So this was very new to me, and I am thankful for it. This was a really enjoyable experience and I let it repeat a few times across the day. The vocals aren’t quite what I’m used to as a pop girlie fan, but I felt every note on the guitars in my bones. I would gladly listen to this again, however I can’t say it converted me beyond “yeah, I like a few of their songs” and I won’t be seeking out rock music on my own as yet, but I enjoyed the listen and filling yet another in my musical travels.
free bird pretty great
Good classic ‘70s rock for driving on the highway.
Old solid rock that was great background listen for AM220 Office Hours preparation
Five stars for Free Bird, but the rest is unremarkable.
Classic Lynyrd.
Not too exciting fairly muted rock
Great album with several classics. Some of the songs feel like they can drag on a bit too long.
Is that real lightning on the album cover? Two songs in and I already knew Tuesday's Gone was a shredder, but the first track was fun too--reverse drums kickin in. Also are there 7 dudes in the band?
That free bird song. And a few others. Decent stuff.
Prolly more like a 3.5, undeniably a great album, just not fully what I’m into
A few good tracks
first somg is cool
6/10 Came for Free Bird, stayed for Free Bird. The rest is decent I guess
Honestly...I enjoyed this album more than expected. At the end of the day it's Southern redneck blues rock. But at least it's Southern redneck blues rock done well. "Freebird" is a hell of an album closer. Could see myself putting this on again someday in the future. 3.5/5
simple man is the best song on the album, the rest is a bit average territory and don’t quite reach me properly atm. free bird is probably overplayed in my head at this point.
it’s fine and now it’s gone with the wind
Ya era hora de oír algo de valor más esencial a mis oidos
not my favorite but full of classics
This is a good album pretty much all the way through! Freebird even is a good song. It is however the most overrated guitar solo in the history of rock and roll. It’s not interesting or good or even particularly technically impressive it’s just long.
more canonical rock music. sure man; whatever.
Tuesday's Gone was in Freaks and Geeks... and of course the legendary Freebird.
Seymour Skinner produces some decent rock.
Outside of the two main ones here there's not much to really write home about.
That solo in free bird is always exciting to hear. The album is alright, not something I usually listen to
I expected to hate this. And it's actually a fine album. Whether it was one that I would have gone "crap, never listened to that one" before I pass on to the next world... I'm not sure. But it's a fine album. Simple as that.
Free bird, Tuesday’s Gone, and Simple Man carried.
Now this is a hard album to review. It’s very polarizing to me. It’s an album chock full of huge hit songs that are timeless classics. However I’m super biased and I hate Lynard Skynard. I band members are douchebags, their unapologetic love for the south is a huge turnoff, and most of all they have the most overrated lead singer of all time. But despite all of that, this album is a genuine classic and the songs on this album are classic and super nostalgic for millions of people. I’m even guilty of being super nostalgic for tuesdays gone because of Happy Gilmore. But regardless of your reasons, this is probably one of the greatest debut rock albums of all time.
this was ok 3/5
classic
6/10
Not a huge fan of the southern sound. I'm not from America, so I don't really resonate with that culture at all. That doesn't change the fact that this album has classics on it, Free Bird being the obvious highlight. There's some really good material on here and it doesn't overstay it's welcome. A decent start to the 1001 albums list, but not a personal highlight for me.
Never been a skynrd kinda guy but this was decent. It had some good tracks and freebird. It's freebird. It's the song u picked in guitar hero when u learned that was supposed to be ur last song so pioc one that's 73 minutes long. Good times
Alright.
too racist to give it anything higher then a 3
Nothing unique, but not bad. Okay, Things Goin On is kinda awsome.
Ganz gut. Free Bird ist super. Irgendwas an den Gitarren gefällt mir wirklich gut.
I mean yeah they rock. Kinda middling near the beginning, but free bird alone does so much heavy lifting. One of if not *the* best rock ending tracks ever
First reaction was; "I mean, it's not Freebird, but it's easy listening." ...then Freebird comes on. xD 3,7/5
Th bst sng s Frbrd
Not a big fan of their sound, but I’ll give it a three because Free Bird is a classic American song
Heard a lot of Skynyrd rowing up in the south. Probably tomorrow much. Looking at this from a macro perspective - as one obviously does with Skynyrd - the best albums I have revisited on this list tend to offer either 1) something new revealed by a different perspective or 2) boundless energy that just jumps off the album or 3) were just always straight up awesome. And many offer all three. This album offers none. Too much is middling. Not bad. Just kind of blase. Even the all timers. There's just nothing left to see. You've heard it all - many times over. What's left is a half speed ZZ Top. A less musical Allman Brothers - mostly devoid of blues but big on sh*t kicking. I can't go back to my former self that had never heard these tracks much less heard them over and over and over and over and over. Maybe they would sound a lot better. Maybe they would kick some serious butt - as they did for me 40 years ago. But thats not the world I live in. I live here. Now. And now - to me - this album feels fairly pedestrian.
A couple GREAT songs on here but generally not really my thing.
This was a fine album. I thought some parts of it were fun, other parts of it made me the 😮💨 emoji, which is not really a good reaction.
D - Some classics on here
Not really my genre but fun and enjoyable enough. Piano (and to a lesser extent guitar) solos are easily the highlights.
I don't really go for this sort of Southern boogie any more. But you have to have a lot of sympathy for Lynyrd Skynyrd, and this album has Free Bird on it. So I'm in.
I guess I’m just not that into 70s hard rock Best Songs - Simple Man - Things Goin On - Free Bird - Tuesdays gone Worst Song - Mississippi Kid I agree with the rating “Music to empty the bar” to some extent - but I have to give some respect. And even though when I listen to Free Bird all I can think about is that one scene from Kingsmen, it’s still a legendary guitar solo
Good album has free bird very country not really my style
What I would expect - decent southern rock, sounds very predictable in hindsight
fine, good solos and singing isn't that annoying most of the time, can see some of this influencing the red hot chilli peppers. free bird does slap though. Favourite songs: Tuesday's gone, poison whiskey, free bird. Overall around 5/10
Free Bird is a fantastic song! The rest of the album was alright. But none of the other songs had the same power.
Now THIS is some good dad rock. Highlights include: "I Ain't The One" "Tuesday's Gone" "Gimme Three Steps" "Free Bird"
Nice album. Rock is one of my favourite genres so it was an easy listen. But to be honest nothing much stood out to me about it… it’s clear why free bird is the stand out song from the album. Definitely the best
Classic, but not really my jams
("Free Bird" intensifies) 3/5
Very musical in comparison to vocals Lyrics felt like they had meaning
Blues, country, this was a pleasant listen. Easy listening which occasionally had my feet tapping. Twangy guitars, young men that sound like they could be in their 40s.
Its an Ok Album. guitars are the best of it.
As someone who listened to a lot of classic rock in HS, this is all pretty well trod and stale for me. Also, 3 dudes from Florida and one from Cali wrote Sweet Home Alabama, so that's minus one star.
This album was more "few hits" than I hoped. I knew Gimme Three Steps and Free Bird, and both are good songs. I also kinda like Mr Banker. But the rest is "meh".
The hits are hits for a reason, the rest is solid, if unexceptional. "Play Free Bird, man!"
It’s fine. Guitar carries it
first time heard 3 ish
Huh. Thought I would find this really annoying but it's surprisingly okay. Apparently I like this more than Bob Dylan. I am very confused and discovering a lot about myself I guess.
I found this fairly uninteresting, but not terrible.
Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme three Steps, Simple Man (so many views, how?), Free Bird (yes!) were hits. So 3.5/5 overall, free bird may push it to 4. Good voices, lovely instrumentals.
Yep.... Definitely Lynard Skynard. It's about what you'd expect. Stick to the radio hits from this album. 3/5 (Representing the three songs on this album that are absolute masterpieces)
never been a fan of the band. it was fine. 3 stars because i like free bird and there's some classics on here. many of the songs are entirely too long
A classic and great album
These guys were always just OK to me — I liked the Allman Brothers Band much more. The ABB seemed like cool blues and boogie aficionados, while LS were party animals with an attitude I didn’t like. This is still a decent debut, a reasonably fun side 1, and “Free Bird” is still pretty danged good. 3.5 rounded down. Not on this album, LS’s “Call Me The Breeze” is one of my fave songs ever — it swings like nobody’s business. It was written by J. J. Cale who also wrote the Clapton hit “Cocaine”.
The song used in freaks and geeks “free bird” not the intro one
