Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Too ethereal for me. The tones were pretty cool but I feel like it should have built up more energy but always stayed pretty passive and mellow.

I've liked her earlier music, but this album just sounds like she wants to be Barbara Morgenstern. I think I'd rather just listen to Barbara Morgenstern. Too much krautrock.

Not really my think too trancy

Modern Kosmology is an apt title. It was a bit like reading a horoscope page on Facebook written by your aunt. I’m sure it is appealing to some but I did not connect to it at all.

Almost fell asleep and crashed my car.

Not getting into this one, seems a bit dull

I imagine this is what being able to breathe under water sounds like. And breathing underwater is low on my wish list.

The production sounds great and the music is pleasant, but it is super krauted-out and all sounds the same after just a few songs. I'd give it another half star if I could.

Woof. This was pretty bad. Yet, I somehow don't feel like it deserves a 1. Maybe it does. It sounds like music you'd hear in a vegan grocery store or some establishment that sells crystals and incense and other hippie shit. Yet it didn't annoy me enough to warrant a 1. I guess I'm just feeling nice today. Seriously though, this is pretty bad. Stay away.

Passable. Nothing in it to warrant another play.

Thoroughly okay, from start to finish. Not really sure why an album like this deserves a place on the list in the first place.

Not for me. Don’t like the vocals, and everything sounds a bit the same.

Egentligen kanske mer 1,5

Reminds me if the band Berlin was smoking with Jefferson Airplane but in a future decade. It was ok

Not really my thing

This album made for good focus music, but none of the songs stuck out for me.

Ok not great

Seems good. 2/5

Saved Prior: is that a serious question Off Rip: H>A>K, Did You See Butterflies?, I Wish Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Cool soundscapes, eh lyrics, eh vocals, why is this a must listen, 2.

Weren’t any parts I actively disliked, but a lot of it just didn’t musically do it for me. Cool vibes, but the music itself is quite simple and uninteresting to me, and repetitive.

Not my favorite

Mild nondescript pop.

boring AF

Ik vind het een beetje saai

Some decent songs but mostly forgettable. 5/10

Like a Brit-Pop Dido. Alright but not that exciting. 2/5

Meh. Reminds me of listening through an okay album from radio rotation. Very repetitive, but towards the second half of the record, there are some interesting synth passages that remind me of LCD Soundsystem’s new stuff or Sylvan Esso FAV TRACKS: Loops In The Secret Society, The Architect, I Wish LEAVT FAV TRACKS: Did You See Butterflies?, Ravenspoint

Decent melody and production. Entrancing. But the vocals and lyrics are shallow and unenthusiastic.

A poppy psychedelic indie album. A unique and creative listen but doesn’t really cut it for me. The instrumentals are there but I never really enjoyed it. 3.8/10

Ehh it was nice beats but lyrics were quite and overall not amazing

I'm not really sure about this album, I#m not sure what it's doing or how it's making me feel. It is quite interesting but interestingness alone does not make for good enjoyable music. It appears to take itself a little too seriously.

Not a fan.

Nowhere near as dreadful as the name and cover suggested

On paper, this sort of thing is right up my street, but it just didn’t grab me at all

An average contribution to the arts

Interesting

Okay? Nothing to write home about.

Bland to the point of nothingness

1.3/5 The album kind of sounds like one big song. There's not much change in the sound and it's very repitivite.

Damn, this shit doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. 1/5

Boring and very niche. Interesting synth sound but very repetitive compositions and weird mastering (very subdued drum kit). I don't understand how that album is meaningful. Highlights: The Architect, Valley.

Too electronica for me and slightly bland.

The top review of this album on here points out that it doesn't have a wiki page. 4 years later this is still true! In fact on the wiki entry for Jane Weaver, there is exactly ONE SENTENCE about this album. Hardly seems like must-listen. As for the music itself, it's uninteresting electro-pop and groups like the xx did this better. I wonder if this one stays on the updated list when it comes out in October.

Ritmos medios electrónicos, aburridos, no me gustó

I have to be honest I couldn’t get through this one. This was like genuinely just sounds. Why was I listening to birds chirping

Really basic bitch stuff. Very boring.Hated it.

boring sorry jane

While this might be critically acclaimed for mixing cosmic electronica and pop and krautrock, it does none of them excellently and gives us a mishmash of boring. If you're going to mix genres, be outstanding at it, not bland. Go home, Jane.

in one ear out the other forgot what this sounded like literally 5 minutes after i stopped listening

This started off really well with some drumming, settled down for a decent listen, then that awful, high pitched irritating annoying voice. It grated from the first note and gradually got into every nerve, I had to turn it off before I killed something. Horrendous album

My mommy was a cosmologist

In the immortal word of Beavis and Butthead: This sucks.

This album had some moments, but overall it was a pretty terrible slog of boring.

At first I thought, “This is ok”. Then I heard basically the same song over and over and I became bored.

Kinda mitski y but not in the vital ways, more just delicate waifish voice way. Not loving anyway, 2017 very modern and I much prefer other stuff

Automobile commercial music. I get the feeling she wants to be cooler than she actually is. Completely forgettable.

It's nice enough but not worthy of list

Bra, men langt ifra essensielt.

Not an album for this site.

Total snoozefest.

I mean come on. Seriously, choosing this? This? Just plain weird.

to experimental

I liked the album, but eating has to be consistent with other albums in this list, and this one just doesn’t have any real reason for inclusion

Boring. A day later I can't remember any of it

Nah, need to be on psychedelic to enjoy this one

Hmmm not really thing

The Good: Something Modern! The Bad: Something that is spelled wrong… The Ugly: Thinking that Jane Weaver is an actress from the ‘90s until you look her up… Okay, that last one was uncalled for. I do apologize to all the Jane Weaver fans out there, all 4 of you. I don’t know what Kosmology is about, I would know what Cosmology is, however, that is a little too complicated and can’t be explained in 1 album… Kosmology, on the other hand, is Greek for shit music that should not be listened to. Thank you Mr Dimery for again making me wonder who is paying you to include these absolute turds of albums on a list that, according to you, one must hear before you die… well, die already, please, so we don’t have to listen to this kind of crap again. Hated it… in case that was not obvious. 1*

Super weird. Not a fan at all. Too many sounds that seem to come from the sound effects section of the keyboard. 2/10.

not for me

None of the last 3 albums have been in my book :(

Not my jam

Women shouldn't sing

No clue why this was included as an essential album

Not sure why I would need to hear this before I die? Boring.

A dreamy, psychedelic blend of synth-pop and krautrock, built on motorik rhythms, swirling electronics, and ethereal, hypnotic vocals all of it simply annoying me to want to quit early.

Ok vocals. Bland synthesized music. Blah.

Kind of excited to listen to something I had never even heard of. Then I got into this limp dream-techno Stereolab wannabe record and all that excitement went straight away.

literally fell asleep listening to this

there's nothing wrong with the album perse (besides it being pretty boring), but it doesn't belong on the list.

Fuck rating albums. Just let me listen.

What makes this album distinctive? Nothing really. A wisp of an album

Not for me. Nothing stood out.

In some parts it sounded like a reincarnation of Yes. With a fraction of crossover to Fleetwood Mac. But without the pazazz. Shame.

Not for me

Frankly, I don't think this belongs on this list. There are some interesting ideas, but the execution is strange- a lot of the instruments feel like first takes riddled with (deliberate?) mistakes.a lot of out of key notes. Might be artistic license, or playing in the studio, thinking it sounds cool, and leaving it. Voice is just OK, nothing special in home production 2017. Some of the synth arrangements are pretty cool. There just doesn't seem to be anything critically or commercially significant here. Just feels like a home album a producer/songwriter put together that feels more demo than final product. Some aspects of unifying themes but feels pretty weak all in. I think its an ok album but I wouldn't revisit it. If I thought it were justified for the list, I'd give it a 2.5, but I don't so it's a 1.5. Not a 1 because ther is a decent album underneath. 1.5, I round down. 1=Crap that shouldn't be here 2=I didn't like it but get why it's here 3=I thought it was ok or even like it, get why it's here, but won't revisit 4=I like it, will revisit 5=This is some of the best music I've ever heard and will continue listening to it

If each part of her instrumentations were performed separately, I might enjoy them - especially the electronic saw. However, putting all the bits together it becomes music to Floss to and forget - if you can fade out her singing.

not my vibe. Sounds like Lana Del Rey's music world

Cheap Psychedelic Electronica from bargain Joni Mitchell.

Is this the newest album on this list? It’s got to be so far, at least. Why does it sound like this was written and produced in the mid 2000’s?! There’s some pretty impressive vocals on display here, but that skill is almost constantly overshadowed by cheesy synths and boring baselines. Every drum beat sounds like a generic preset that came with the 2010 version of fruityloops. The songwriting is generic and uninspiring, lyrically and musically. I guess this would be good background music for a telecommunications conference? Not for me. 1*

not sure really why this chick is on here.. meh.. left no mark with me

It's not my music

This is awful. The bull-case is it's watered-down breathy 80s synth, a la Kate Bush, with fewer real instruments and more uninhibited self-indulgence. But on top of that, it's just frequently unpleasant. "Loops in the Secret Society" is just dissonant crap, and not in the clever way. The back half is almost unlistenable. Even the apparently well-received songs, like "The Architect" and the title track, are a boring drone. Straight pass.

Started out very Hawkwindesque, I thought this could be rather good. unfortunately it sort of drifted into ambient mush. quite disappointing really. Not as good as many of the 2's I've given lately, so can only be a 1.

Album 524 of 1001 Jane Weaver - Modern Kosmology (2017) Rating : 1 / 5 This wasn't appealing at all. One track talking about "we are turning to dust" caught my attention but it didn't last.

This would have been bad in the 80s, it's atrocious now.

Modern, 8-bit, couldn't find a song I wanted to hear all the way through. 1/5

This was really an awful listen from start to finish. I can’t stand these kinds of vocals. I think she was aiming for ethereal? New-agey imagery in the lyrics, fluffy high-pitch vocals, unpleasant electronic background music. Couldn’t end soon enough.

Not a fan

Not for me. 1/5

At least it isn't too electronic. Then comes track 3. This is an awful genre.

Ugh, terrible

Why is this on here?

too electronic for me

Did not like this one. Ended up skipping a number of the songs.

Hunh. What was that? I’m confused at this album’s inclusion. It’s not bad. It’s just not distinctive or amazing.

No thank you. The synthesizers were too much.

My listening notes just say: trying to be an edgier version of Enya? And somehow less cool.

What... why is this here?

Not my music

Tietoisuudestamme poistunut sana "hipsteri" palaa mieleen. Valitettavasti koukut pitäytyvät poissa.

Not my cup of tea

This record should be called, "Drones in the round". And that's not a compliment. This record doesn't even have a wiki page. Which shouldn't be a requirement for the list, but in this case, it should be an indication that the record shouldn't be on the list. It's a one idea, flat record not worth your time. Then randomly in the last couple of songs, some dude talks. Rambling unoriginal cat away Tool lyrics as though they are super deep. Jesus it's so bad.

Bland, unclear how this made the list.

some songs are okay, some are horrible, I like how some songs continue each other, I hate the vocals but like the instruments and style for some songs, the voice ruins everything for me, my favorite song was valley. It was hard to listen to this album 2.5/10. 1 star

2/5 Did not vibe with this one

It’s pleasant enough but I have no idea why it’s on this list. A bit of a by numbers electronica pop album. Nice voice, the odd good tune but there’s probably a reason why this has never come up before in my life. It’s Ok, just that.

Why is this even on the list? There is nothing remarkable about any of it – especially in a 2017 release.

Bit shit

No. Who chooses these mediocre things?

Didn’t do it for me at all. She has a great voice but often stayed monotone and didn’t vary it much

Tim music

pure garbage.... who's her target public anyway? Middle-aged women that believe in astrology?

This is like someone singing at a coffee house and they just aren't very good. 3/10.

Iets te kosmisch

Strange dreamy music that feels like I’ve smoked too much weed in an unfamiliar place with strange people, but in a not completely terrifying way...

Copia barata de los 80

Hypnotic. Did I just get mkultra'd? Listenable, but too much trance rhythm.
