kind of a nothing burger? it's alright but sort of bland, not really my taste
Spacey, kinda reminded me of Enya
Never heard of her. Not bad at all.
A pleasant surprise.
little to bubbly and upbeat for me yesterday. not saying thats a bad thing. just wasnt in the mood for fast hits and quick tempo.
Hypnotic, trance-y record. It reminds me of a mix between Stereolab and Beach House but more electro pop. It was enjoyable but a lot of songs were quite directionless.
Dream pop del bueno, etéreo hasta los calzones. Para escuchar de fondo o para hacer una escucha prestandole atención a los detalles que abundan y entretienen.
This album didn't impress me much; it was enjoyable as background music but nothing in particular stood out
honestly didnt hate this one a modern psychedelic album 3.5
4? Te herbeluisteren!!!!
Liked most of it well enough.
Decent. I dont agree that everyone should hear it, and its not like a special album for any reason, but decent. 3/5
Interessante Platte. Fand Musik ok, genügend Abwechslung, Gesang gut; bin noch nicht sicher wo ich diese Platte einordne; zu den unverzichtbaren oder den fallengelassenen.
not bad actually, but not my type of music and nothing made the playlist
Quite enjoyed the motorik / Stereolab / Goldfrapp / Velvet Underground feel of this. Didn't feel like anything thrillingly new, but a pleasant set of songs that kept me going through the morning wfh. Standout was Ravenspoint, mainly because the second vocal added some variation. Liked the cover artwork, too. 2.5 stars.
There's a lovely prog space rock feel to this album. Yet still it sounds fresh and contemporary. Weaver's vice is the real star. The analogue sound brings out the best of her talents. An unexpected surprise.
Interesting sound with the synth and rock mix, but I just felt the songs were lifeless and the album therefore dragged on.
Decent electro pop but not quite as memorable as one would expect from an entry on this list
I like the sound of this album, but it's hard to figure out why its on this list. Then I saw that it was Britpop, and everything fell into place for me. It's like how if I made this list, everyone would be saying, "Another fucking Butthole Surfers album??? How many of these are there on this list?" We all have our biases, and the person who curates this list has a fetish for Britpop that has descended into criminal deviancy. Hopefully they're able to get help before this situation escalates any further Don't get me wrong, I like this album. It sounds good, and the music fits well with her voice. I just don't get why this album that came out in 2017 and could have been made 10 years before that and not been groundbreaking, is on this list. It's fine, it's just not special 3/5
This one's a bit 'out there' but not necessarily in a bad way. Can't say I will ever listen to it again but it had a freshness to it that I enjoyed.
Eh it’s just a modern electronic pop album the back half is a bit better than the front half but I didn’t hate any of the tracks it’s just nothing amazing. 3/5
Me gustó bastante. Bien chillero. Como para dejar de fondo mientras manejás por la costa o charlás con tu novia.
Pretty good.
23rd January 2023 Finished listening on the 24th morning. Chilled day and evening. A lot of sharp turns on this angle just when you think you have it figured out. Can see how artists like La Roux picked up bits from Jane Weaver. Liked the more indie stuff over the experimental electro bits. 3.5 if I could.
Never heard of this - kind of interesting, but not enough to revisit. Not sure if this has to be heard before death
alright
Couldn't get through a single song. Just not for me.
This has got to be the most severe case of so close to something I like but not quite making the mark so far, and I'm not even sure why. My only thought could be is perhaps I wanted the songs to change a bit more as they went on, but I didn't really have that issue while listening. I think it was just a simple case of a song not really doing quite what I wanted it to. It was alright, I certainly don't regret listening to this, just wonder if there's more to be had with this Jane Weaver's other work.
It was... ok. I mean, there wasn't anything about it that just blew my mind. The instrumentation was definitely better than the vocals. She had a very... hippie kind of voice. I don't get why this is one of the 1001 albums I had to hear. Did she pay someone off for this? I mean, it wasn't like it was mediocre or anything, but I just couldn't find anything that stood out to me. Very puzzled as to why this got in.
Eh, it was ok. I suspect this will be dropped from the 1001 albums in future editions. Lazy review today.
Good vibes on this album. Would listen again.
Good
I like this, it's got a good atmosphere and some really interesting songs. Quite dark and broody in places. Plenty of cool synth too.
started strong but lost me a bit later on
Interesting, would like to check out more of her stuff
Lots of 3 star albums for me lately.
Pleasant 2.5/5
middd
Kinda croony and melodic
This was - totally fine. I liked it. It didn't blow my mind in any way, though. I'm not sure why it's on the list but there are some good tracks here. My love of pretty vocals over electronic sounds is well known. Overall, I'd give it a 3.5 but I'm rounding down because it didn't strike me as particularly original or the best of its genre.
Interesting. Still not something I'd go out of my way to listen too, but it was ok.
Ok is this one of the greatest 1100 albums ever ? Probably not. Have I just been introduced to an artist that I've never heard of that I want to hear more of. Frickin YES! Electronic Folk. Bit of Stereolab bit of Broadcast bit of Steeleye Span. It pushes my buttons.
3 Seeing as how Googling this album results only in Bandcamp links and no Wikipedia results, shoutout to 1001 Albums for pulling out a modern deep cut here. That being said, this is a neat, modern electronic psychedelic listen without much substance at its core. Didn't dislike any of it in particular, but I was left without much of a lasting impression, and, while I'm not trying to dismiss amateur songwriting by any means, the "messing around in GarageBand" vibes were strong. So idk, it was fine. Seems like something to get high and play video games to. Favorite songs: H>A>K, Modern Kosmology, Slow Motion
Fine I guess, didn’t really grab me
This was a hard one to rate. I had to listen to it twice. It could be anywhere from a 2 star to a 4 star for me. Some of the songs have a gloomy ethereal kind of feel to them, kind of like Radiohead, and I like those. However, some were too spacey and artsy. Hard one to rate but I guess a 3 makes sense.
This was interesting, probably something I need to listen to again to fully appreciate. Didn’t love the electronica elements but overall definitely worth a re-listen. 3 stars.
good but a bit too on the nose for my taste
This is decent, but not much really striking me or holding my attention. Pleasant to listen to but mostly forgettable for me. First and last tracks I found the most interesting and pretty good though; there's enough here in these two tracks that I might try the album as a whole again later.
Pretty good. No tracks jumped out for me but good vibe for the full listen. Nice to have something totally new to me pop up.
Modern Kosmology was a surprise. Great songs with lots to keep the ears engaged. I'll listen to this again.
This one sort of blew by as I worked...had some faint glow of Metric to me, first/second album Metric. I wouldn't say I could pick anything out if you made me, but I also had no problem listening to it....going to try a second listen at least to see if anything sticks
Decent, enjoyable sounds on the track, but vocals were very flushed out. Not much progression from the front to back either. Prob wouldn’t revisit
Okay. But seemed a bit derivative and redundant to me. Nice voice. Easy to listen to but easily lost with other similar albums.
i thought at the beginning there was some potential to be something different yet interesting but as it got towards the end it just sort of turned into something i feel i’ve heard before.
Nice background music.
An ok album. Nothing wrong with it but I'm not sure why it's on this list.
Very strong vibes. I think it deserves another listen. If they’re still around in 20 years I wouldn’t be surprised.
Dreamy
leuk ma niet per se men ding, te poppy
Best leuk om een keertje te luisteren. Doet me een beetje denken aan Melody's Echo Chamber.
Fine, couple of interesting tracks, nothing special
Pretty good background music but nothing amazing.
Overall Tame Impala vibes "Ravenspoint" is so trippy with the echo on the whole song "I Wish" has great 80s synth and drums
The beginning was captivating and the transitions between the first few songs were really good but the rest is more of the same. Seems a little early for this album to be on this list. Who knows the eventual influence it may have but right now it’s a 5 year old album that has little impact in pop music/culture. If I died without hearing this (the whole concept of the list) I wouldn’t be missing out. Still enjoyable to listen to and deserves a 2.5ish bumped to 3 stars
Pretty solid. Nothing too special, but I found the latter half to be better.
Interesting and sometimes beautiful sounds on this album. Sorta Portishead sounding with some of the deeper cut Oasis stuff.
Ok and just that
Probably a 3.5, mostly pleasant.
Interesting. Ethereal voice, and some incredible sound scapes. Comparable sort of feel to some of Charlotte Gainsborough's stuff
J'ai aimé l'album, la production et la voix de l'artiste. C'es tun bon album et j'ai été surpis car je ne connaissais pas. 3.25
Pretty vibey, gives off Beatles trippier stuff vibes, not really my thing
This is the ninth album from English singer songwriter Jane Weaver. It's a psychedelic folk album with acoustic and electronica elements sprinkled throughout. I found this album interesting for its combination of acoustic English folk with electronic psychedelic sounds. The songs were beautiful and provided a good energy. It's no wonder that some of these songs were remixed to be more "dancey" because the groundwork was already laid by Weaver. This is a great chill-out album!
2.5
I got confused Between this artist and Jane’s Addiction so I was very surprised to hear what I heard! It was ok, my husband doth love her work. Me less so. But that’s my problem, not anyone else’s.
H>A>K is triply. There are some cool layering effects and synth sounds that I like. The synths and drums play well off of each other. Did You See Butterflies: Persistent bass line. Her voice is ethereal. Harmonies are nice. Cool layering and synths once again. Modern Kosmology: Titular track, groovy. Funky drums. Another ostinato bassline Loops In The Secret Society is a Bop. Very upbeat. Cool harmonies. This album uses a lot of vocal layering, some cool counter melodies are created. Mostly it’s all sounding samey to me, for whatever thats worth. This continues into Architect- cool sounds, synths and layering. It’s in its lane. Down to- “valley” -getting listening fatigue from this album I think Ravenspoint- lots of layering but some cool reverb effect “I wish” this album was over
I wasn't very keen on this for the first few tracks, it took some time to pull me in. Initial reaction is she sings a lot of sustained notes, over an electronic beat and it's all a bit samey. As the album went on though, I was drawn in and started listening more closely, and I must say there is some excellent layering to the sounds here and it really rewards taking the time to pay attention. I don't know that I agree that it belongs on the 1001 list; but it was a nice album that I ended up enjoying once I gave it a chance.
I'd describe as modern, electronic psych. A little tooooo beep boop for my tastes but the vocals are dreamy and fit into what the instrumentation is doing. First half is a lot stronger imo and I saved a couple songs I liked. Mixture of 60s, 80s & modern so super unique. Not something I would buy myself but I can see the appeal.
It was whatever.
I don’t agree with many of the late additions to the list but none of them have been bad
Solid art-pop record
toffe listen maar ook niet meer dan dat imo
Pretty good and catchy 70s folky, synthy throwback. A bit broadcasty too. Not bad 👍
kinda trippy, kinda nice, not reaaally my taste
Great to revisit this album.
Some interesting moody feeling tracks. Very low key, could have been written any time in the last 40 years. I'm not sure if I'll return to it so I'll give a solid 3.
Interesting choice for this list. It's good, sounds like StereoLab, but nothing stands out on first listen.
Pretty good. Not so original as to make me understand what it’s doing on here though
maball kokk
I was listening to this album whilst trying to bash out a particularly complex proposal for work. I found that I'd quite often stop thinking about the presentation I was writing and pay more attention to the music. A little bit avant-garde and too-smart-for-you-peasant for my taste but i did find it demanded attention at least
Ethereal is the only word that comes to mind to describe this album. I'm not really one for soft wispy electronic music, but this was lovely to listen to this afternoon. Love the album artwork as well, the packaging accurately meshed with what was delivered.
I have literally nothing interesting to say about this album. I liked it okay
Reminds me of Metric - a little less unabashed synth pop but directionally aligned.
I couldn't tell if this was synth-indie pop or synth-pop indie. Some tunes were basically 4 minute intros. I was expecting it to keep building but then it'd just hit cruising altitude and end. Tbf, those would make great modern prog rock tunes if explored. Other parts just feel immature. Jane Weaver apparently made this at age 45, but this kind of music is the realm of uni students. I'm ok with making this judgement. Overall: not awful by any stretch, but did honestly feel like a bit of a waste of time. 3/5.
Best Song: The Architect. Give me more of whatever those background blips and bloops are. Worst Song: Loops In The Secret Society. A disappointingly generic rock groove. Overall: An chill and psychedelic album, although leans a bit too heavy on the chill at times. Just groovy enough to keep you interested, and just relaxed enough that it can be put on in the background without feeling intrusive.
Ethereal voicing. A nice album to have playing in the background.
The album art and name are concerningly new agey. The font at the bottom reminds me of laser shows so that's something. Opening it up the track listing also seems crystal adjacent. OK here we go. Immediate impression it has the synths and general vibe I expected. But more energy and forward motion. I'm digging the layering of the vocals.
Suena bien pero no es un genero que me guste escuchar, el único tema que quizá vaya a escuchar de nuevo es did you see butterflies? pero de los demás no rescato ninguno, creo. Igual no estuvo mal
Pas écouté trop chiant
I thought this album started out strong, then got a bit repetitive. 7/10.
Pretty good. Started slow, but then I really got into it. Will listen again
Instantly thinking St. Vincent or Avant-grade type alternative here. This album is light and breezy. I find it acceptable as music. I am not going to remember it. I am not going to recommend it to anyone. It is the perfect example of a 2.5 star album. I will offer it a 3 because when I look back at my 2s, it is not as bad as those.
I wish the Wikipedia article explain why this album is notable/significant/etc -- I thought this album was ok, but I feel like I'm probably missing something. It's not the type of music I gravitate towards naturally so I think I'd probably be able to get more out of it if I knew more about it.
Una bona descoberta. Vibes d'Au Revoir Simone per tot el disc i una sensibilitat a l'hora de traçar temes d'inspiració folk amb instruments electrònics que em fa posar l'artista al radar
It's like pleasant and everything, but I've run it in the background 3 times without really paying attention and it's not made me focus at any point. Not really a top 1001 album ever is it?
Gute Electronics, Beats, Instrumentierung. Eine eigentlich gute Stimme, die aber zu vie seuselt und irgendwann bisschen nervt.
Enjoyable and interesting album, though perhaps a little patchy.
new-age, space-age
Paikoin makeeta tunnelmaa ja tässä sentän oli uudeks levyks jotain vähän spessumpaa tarjolla.
No the type of music Id like.
I enjoyed this album, cosmic kind of sound
I thought it was an interesting project, but nothing particularly stood out to me. There were some decent moments, but as a whole it did not click with me. Not bad enough to be a 2, so I will give it a 3.
Sounded a lot like Portishead or Stereolab. Love the sound, but not sure who is deriving from whom.
Solid album by a stylistic magpie. Exploration and trying-on-for-size of different influences from someone who spends all their time listening to and making music. Some catchy, often substantial, nothing groundbreaking.
Had never heard of Jane Weaver prior but was pleasantly surprised. Decent sound although nothing stood out as amazing. 3/5
Interesting and definitely full of depth – I feel like I need another listen. Reminded me a bit of Khadija Bonet. Can't believe I'd never heard of her!
Ok
Beautiful background music.
A bit "dreamy" for my usual taste, but I really enjoyed it. Some nice basslines and the womans voice is great. Beautiful and a little bit haunting.
Kind of a boring album, nothing particularly bad about it some ok use of instruments and effects. Lots of ambient sounds a little trippy.
trippy and groovy and a nice Friday morning album
Ágætis plata.
Pleasant opening with a motorik beat. But it mostly just stays pleasant and not attention grabbing.
ihan jepa.
Kiva löytö, jännää retro psyke pop menoa
Meh. Ihan kivan kuuloista mut ei sen enempää.
The salt of the earth What is your impression? Elements of Air Surreal, ethereal, disconnection
Not really my style. Trancy folk rock with a bit of jazzed up drums for flavor. Very well produced and the instrumentation is great. Vocals are decent.
Feels like a flavor of the week that nobody's going to remember in a few years. They really need to let these albums breathe before putting them in a list like this. Best track: The Lightning Back
I wasn't sure what genre this would be - its sort of a dreamy electro-synth-pop. It's not bad, but I found the beats and some of the lyrics to be repetitive.
Listened twice, enjoyed some of the tracks. Late 2010’s rock with samples swirled in for texture. Singers voice was good, but probably won’t listen again
Easy to listen to. But nothing 'stuck' Vapid
Pausado y relajado. Algo de electrónico.
3.7
I enjoyed this. Not come across Jane Weaver before. Definitely worth another listen I reckon. A steady 3* to start with but might well be a grower.
Decent escapism type music.
What an interesting album. I had not heard of her or heard any of her music, and this style is a departure from music I typically enjoy. Although at times some of the tracks get too frenetic for me, overall I liked listening to this and will come back to it. I also want to explore her other work. (Re-listening to the track "Valley." It's beautiful.)
was aight
I'd heard about this album when it first came out and a friend recommended it- couldn't get into it then so I'm happy to be giving it another go. On the whole it was a pleasant listen from the driving motorik style opener to the more sun-hazed psychedelics of the last few tracks. The sequencing is done very well and it moves effortlessly through different moods. The middle stretch is superb- "Slow Motion" thru "The Architect" is what will bring me back for more listens. There's a lovely warm, analogue feel to the sound throughout and Weaver's voice glides above the music well. But there's just nothing very outlandish going on. It's not groundbreaking music and feels much more an exercise in atmospherics than songwriting. Not that there's anything wrong with that- today I'm rounding down to a 3*, but on a more generous day this might get a 4*. On paper it's everything I love, so frustrated it didn't hit more.
It's a fine album if inconsequential, but the entry in the book reaffirms my beliefs of the Anglocentrism of the list.
slow start but got better
I liked everything except the vocal delivery. All the instrumentation was cool but if the vocals aren't my style it ruins an artist for me.
Exceeded my initially low expectations and poor impression to provide a solid soft and easy listening album. Probably not one I seek out consistently, but would be perfect to have on in the background to end an evening or enjoy a vice or two.
Smooth. chill. Beautiful in the background or for focus. It’s steadily grew on me throughout the day. This is a very interesting pivot for the list so far. I initially intended to ignore it and give a low ranking but listening further got me kinda hooked.
Surprised by how much I liked it. The psych pop sound was nice back ground music. Would definitely check out more of her music
Some cool sounds and ideas. Get's a little repetitive after a few songs.
This album is just fine for someone who really loves St. Vincent. Slow Motion is a good song, but other than that I could take it or leave it.
Interesting…. not bad.
I like the sound and overall ideas here, but it really flounders in its execution. I feel like I kept waiting for something bold or adventurous or unexpected, and never quite got it. A very safe record.
Dit klonk verrassend leuk. Beetje psychedelische Auf Der Maur. Vrij recent maar niet eerder meegekregen.
Ik had hier nog nooit van gehoord maar beviel me uitermate goed! Leuk album.
Het recentste album tot nu toe. Mooi, maar het raakte me niet.
Enjoyable. One song similar to LaRoux.
Liked this more than I thought I would
3
I'm not sure why this record is on the list to be honest. It's fine, but that's all it is. Nothing jumped out at me as I listened.
It's fine. But why is it on this list? I had never heard of it, so I wanted to see if it was a big deal in 2017 (big enough to include in 1001 albums you must listen to). I looked at 5 top 50 of 2017 lists (NPR, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and to include the British perspective that seems heavily weighted on the list, The Guardian and NME). Jane Weaver's "Modern Kosmology" was on none of them.
On albumoftheyear.com this Jane Weaver album is #159/160 for 2017. So I’ve at least sampled it before. I didn’t download it then, and I’m not going to download it now. If someone else was playing it, I wouldn’t mind listening to it again.
Very cool, I thought some of it sounded kinda similar to 'Kid A' by Radiohead.
Dispensável
Too experimental
A nice album
Hippy dippy but I liked the electro-folk sound
Was decent in places.
Shame the vocals are weak and samey, actual tunes are ace
Not bad, though not mesmerizing either.
3/5 seemed interesting at first, but eventually not that much
It was listenable but not something I would choose. It was quite cosmic. ***
Strange but pleasant.
good different
I've had to listen twice to work out how much I care... certain nice bits and tunes but some of it really quite boring. Interesting as possibly one of our most modern albums - 2017.
This album was alright. I didn’t really love it, but I didn’t hate it.
Enjoyable. Indie punk? Not a big fan of the vocals
A little too much of the same thing. Tones, tempos, etc. No choruses or hooks.
This album was fine. I liked it for background listening and it was interesting in places but nothing to rave about.
OK, nothing special. Kinda music that would be first on at 11am at a festival
Less than 5 years old, this record was a surprise for sure. Never heard of Jane Weaver before. This music is solid, I listened to the record she just released this year and enjoyed it too
lite trevlig
This gives me quite a few warm fuzzies. Especially during the bits closer to dance music, and when the objectively indulgent string arrangements come in. It may be naive, but "post-Britpop" neatly describes my initial reading. And like many a Britpop project, its songs never cohere into a sum greater than the parts.
electr., dance, 2017 -> 2
Interesting melodies and vocals but nothing here of any note unfortunately
It's albums like these that make me question why I keep up with this project
I was bored
Yea sure
Fairly forgettable as far as a pop album goes.
It was alright, but didn't really stand out for me. 4/10
Liked it better second listen. Intriguing songs to end with. Overall, pretty forgettable.
Best Track - "Modern Kosmology"
Not for me, not sure it needed to be on this list.
Boring so so boring/ I don't remember a thing about this. Yet not the worst modern electro pop album I've gotten this week. 4/10
Feel sorry for the musicians. The sound is okay, like some sort of indie/prog for the modern day. Then her vocal is so flat. Baffling choice for albums to hear before you die - I suspect whoever extended it to include the 2010s just eenie meenied albums from the decade.
OKish
is she related to one of the editors? how did this make the list? its not bad but its incredibly bland
Pleasant enough, but mostly forgettable. Only tracks 5 and 10 (“Loops…” and “I Wish) sounded like actual songs. Liked the nod to ELO’s “Telephone Line” between “Lightning Back” and “Valley”. That was cute.
In the evolution of the universe of music this album blends into the forgettable soundscape of so many artist that sound exactly the same.
holy mumble ambient noise batman
it was some talking without saying anything, nothing special
Pretty nothing album.
Wispy
It was ok nearly a 3 but is this the best Widnes has to offer?
Soft voice over synth. Aggressively indie, in sound and lyrics. Mystical. Not really my thing.
This is not the end-all for the quality of an album, but there is not a Wikipedia page for Modern Kosmology. It is an album that came out in the year 2017 and there is no Wiki for it. That doesn't seem like a promising sign there is not a single fan of this artist/album that was compelled to set up a page. I write this prior to listening to the album but there is the strong whiff of "We need to put something modern in this book," with this one. After listening, yes, this album is exactly what I thought it was. It's fine, there's nothing good or bad that stands out about it. It's got a modern sound and there is absolutely no reason this should be in the book, unless one of the editors knows her.
Another UK artist that shouldn't have made the cut: this isn't bad, but it is, to my ears, pretty forgettable. It's not even like it was groundbreaking for its time: this came out in 2017 and sounds dated.
I listened to the whole album three times and absolutely nothing caught my ear.
watered-down Stereolab At this point I'm not surprised that they would pick mediocre albums for this list, but there's really not much to grab my attention besides the two decent synth rock tracks (1&6) Can't see why I would need to hear this Of course she's English
i dont have time
Not a good sign that the Wikipedia links to the artist alone and not the album. There is no Wikipedia for this album I guess. Surprising considering she's still active and this wasn't that long ago. It's not very good. I find her voice pleasent. But the tunes are D tier.
There's something there, but its not for me
Album #134 Jane Weaver: Modern Kosmology I’m not going to pretend like this is the worst album that I’ve ever heard, but it certainly might be the most forgettable. I mean like this has to be a case of someone buying their way onto this list, right? Did Jane Weaver hire the same marketing firm as Geese or something? It is just the most run-of-the-mill indie pop that I’ve ever heard, absolutely no reason it needs to be on this list, especially considering how few modern albums are. Slow Motion was a pretty good track, can’t remember anything else. Best Tracks: Slow Motion, Modern Kosmology, The Architect Worst Track: Ravenspoint Score out of 10: 5
the question i continually return to with this list of albums to listen to before you die is: is this list greatest hits, deep cuts, both, or neither? an album like this makes me think "neither" which brings into question the whole purpose of the project. this is an album that is by any metric simply unremarkable. it was not influential, it made no splash, it's not something from a niche scene, and it is not by a notable person. best i can tell, it's a college friend of one of the editors who recently put out a new album around time for the next edition. her voice is fine, but this is utterly unremarkable. i forgot it as i listened to. the most i can say is that at brief points i thought of possible stereolab influence and it made me want to listen to an all-timer like "dots and loops". you know what album isn't on this list? take a guess.
Somehow I'm guessing this was closer to the 1001 end of proceedings.
It’s not terrible but also not memorable and not really for me
Yet another British pop-rock album that seems to be here just because it’s British? Did little to nothing for me
mid… 2,5
soft and beautiful but not enough bite for my taste.
So annoying idk why its on here couple okay ones ig
Mid.
Nothing exciting here.
Pretty forgettable album. Did enjoy a few songs: Standout songs Modern Kosmology The Architect
Not bad - just boring. It's dreamy, hazy background music.

Hard to understand why this is in the book - it's fine but doesn't stand out that much and no wiki page 😮 Sonically there are some interesting things going on and her ethereal vocals are quite nice with the layered music. But yeah not that special I think, I doubt I'll remember this She shares my birthday though so that's something
I fear this one is a bit too abstract and trancy for me. Also, the album feels somehow unfinished.
..
A pretty trippy and ethereal album. I'm honestly not sure what to compare this to, it's very much electronic with indie pop melodies and wispy vocals. This album didn't seem to get much recognition, however, and I can kind of see why. Props to the author for going off of the beaten path for this one, but I didn't find it particularly memorable or impactful.
The first song is promising. The rest sucks.
Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: ️🔠💠📜 Production: 🎚️📏🥾 Music: 🌀🍷😑 Rating: 🔭🔭/5
Very melancholy again, another album on this list that I’m not sure why I need to listen to before I die but definitely music
Ronflation
Wasn't terrible musically just kind of odd. I enjoyed it more as it went on. 2.5 stars
Honestly, this album really doesn't do much for me. It was a perfect album to have on the background for studying but, it really doesn't push the needle at all? There was little to no variance throughout the whole piece and her vocals were so nothing. Even the electronic elements seem to be evident throughout this whole style, no idea why this is included.
A 2017 release from an artist who has <50k listeners a month on Spotify. Safe to say this was not that influential. The album doesn’t even have its own Wikipedia page! If we’re going to include pop-rock this recent, how on earth did One Direction not make the cut?
2.5 Perfectly fine, but completely forgettable. Not popular, not influential, just some indie album the guy who made the list happened to like. Come on, man.
Love the vocal performance; the songs, though… they never hooked me.
Drums on Modern Komsology had a Take Five feel to them. Enjoyed The Architecht. Overall OK but nothing remarkable that spoke to me.
Not bad, but not exciting either
Well, that was music.
Not sure I understand the inclusion of this record.. of all the music released in 2017?
⭐⭐ Svårt album att gradera. Elektronica, singer songwriter album. Gillar det men samtidigt inget som sticker ut tillräcligt för att jag kommer att välja att lyssna på det i framtiden. Känner mig dessutom tveksm till vad det gör på denna listan så det får en 2a
Fall asleep somewhere in between.
Bit weird
Ok
Bright pop with krautrock edge. Interesting though a bit monotonous.
Um. Nah
Eh, nothing special here.
Did not exactly grab me per se
Wanted badly to like this… but fear it was about as nothing as the beck album. Cool production but I don’t know what she’s saying for shit the whole album.
Representative of the genre.
Meh. Not for me
mid bez szalu jakies takie manifestacje czy cos albo cos ze wszechswiatem?? idk tak czy siak bez szalu
Hmmm...well this album isn't in the edition of 1001 Albums I have, so I can't see why they've included it. First impressions are reasonably good, nice motorik rhythms. However, as the album proceeds it's all sounding a bit same-y.
Mediocre pop
This was fine. It didn't make me feel anything, but that includes boredom
Zu den bekanntesten und stilprägenden Songs zählen „The Architect“, „Did You See Butterflies?“ und „Slow Motion“.
This was a bit of a meh album. It is very recent, but it is more of something that would've been popular in the 90s when you could just play this in the background and chill. Nowadays, this is a bit meh, but still alright to have in the background. I assume it would maybe be more fun for someone on drugs to listen to, but I'm not sure what their target audience is.
I can see the artistry that makes it famous but too esoteric and non-memorable for my tastes
Jane Weaver must be one of the editor's cousins, or girlfriends, or something like that. It's the only way to explain the inclusion of this album. It's not even that bad; it just has no place on a 'must-hear' list. It's like the editors wrote down every album from 2017 on the wall, and then threw a dart. Baffling.
Eh
Playing this upset our dog Louie. Hence it upset me.
She's certainly interesting. I like the soundscapes she creates. But none of the songs pull me into the current, so I remain on the outside just observing the music as it floats by. And that twee head-voice is an instant turn-off for me; whether in 1920s pop, Lawrence Welk style choruses, folk music, trip hop or whatever this is.
It feels mediocre. Like I listened to it but none of it stuck. It was bad but no song was one I would suggest to someone. It's very middle of the road. I give it a solid meh.
Do you need to be on drugs to enjoy this album?
idk just couldn't get into it? Felt like perfectly fine background music but nothing super unique?
No me ha dicho nada
Not sure what kind of music this is, singer/ songwriter, ambient, folk. Nice voice, strange music.
16/1089 какой-то дибильный, бесячий, скрипучий психодел разозлило во время прослушивания
5/10 The kind of stuff I should like, but I found it boring and obnoxious
Krautrock energy for the 2010s. This is sonically interesting but not breakthrough for the time and I am not sure why this was on the 1001 albums list over kanye, bon iver. Builds a distinct vibe and flow across the album but nothing particularly stands out. Plays with contrast of whisper vocal with electronic shifting over darker bass instrumentation but I feel others do tht better
This is not a great record. Not even sure why this is on here, as there’s nothing terribly special about the album or the artist.
Kind of interesting, it's creative. But I'm not usually one who listens to music as a way to experience art.
S'ok. Not really my style
Repetitive, slowly-developing songs with interesting synth textures and cold vocals that work mostly as another instrument.
Dreary vocals and Electronica
Really not terrible music, but there wasn't a single track to grab my attention or that I want to hear again.
Modern Kosmology is one of those albums where i just have a really difficult time enjoying it. It is very clear it tried something not like many other albums (that's probably why this album's only listed genre is Singer-Songwriter on this website) but i just don't think it did a very good job at that. The main thing that makes me think this way is the fact that the songs feel too weak, hollow, empty, quiet, I could keep going on. This album mainly just lacks a kick to it for it to really be enjoyable. It is a shame, since this album does have bits and pieces of something special, it just fails to realize that. I really wish it did realize that because it could be good but it just was not. Best Song: The Architect Worst Song: I Wish
Funky vibe, nice voice. It's as if I was transported into a magic fairy-core fantasy book, love that. I imagine I would be nice study/drawing music. Not a genre i would typically chose, but hey voice is so lovely
Anyone who has the audacity to put cosmology in the title of a song — or worse, of an entire album — already deserves a lower score just for that. Way too pretentious. Not that the music is bad, but there’s really nothing special about it either, beyond some guitars soaked in flanger and delay. A 2.5 is already generous and beyond than this deserve
A bit boring
Completely ok
Ok
Is this huge in England? Kind of imogene heap lite.
Ok I guess
would prefer jane remover
This one feels like a bit of a random inclusion on the 1001 list. Modern Kosmology is clearly psychedelic folk, leaning into the cosmic and experimental, but without doing anything that feels particularly groundbreaking, especially for an album released in 2017. Jane Weaver is definitely talented, and there’s a cohesive aesthetic here. But to my ears, it sounds a bit like a female-fronted version of The Doors: swirling, trippy textures, hypnotic grooves, and mystic leanings. It’s fine, competent, atmospheric, but I didn’t find myself getting pulled into it emotionally or sonically. Nothing here blew me away.
Like the album cover. The music is enhancing and soft. Vocals are melodic and good if you want something background you're not focused on
What makes this something I would need to listen to before I die? It was okay but nothing to write home about to me. Kinda boring.
Thin, high female voice, but decent music
How do I put this. If this album were a soup, it would have all the tang and zest, but somehow, somebody forgot the meat. There's no substance, it's just wobbly synths and floaty "singing".
Nice voice. I may need to listen a few times to make a judgement
This was fine. I don't think it has any business being on this list, but it is music.
No wonder as to why you’ve never heard of Jane Weaver
# 560 : Modern Kosomolgy Modern Kosmology – Spacey, Stylish, and Slightly Forgettable This one’s not bad… but also not sure why I need to hear it before I die. Modern Kosmology floats along with nice vocals and some interesting compositions, but it never really takes off. It scores low on the “must-hear” scale, but reasonably well on the “nice to have on while folding laundry” scale. The instrumentals aren’t particularly adventurous, and while it feels very current for indie, it also feels like something that’ll age about as well as a 2020s TikTok trend. Pleasant, yes. Memorable? Not so much. Verdict: A cosmic cruise to nowhere in particular. File under “spacey background music for people who already forgot what they were listening to.” If you have to listen to this, look out for : Did You See Butterflies Listened : 03/09/2025
was lowkey expecting more of a folksy or singer-songwriter vibe, but was pleasantly surprised by the sound of this. i like the percussion, and the synths are yummy but lowkey the magic is lost over time. like her high vocal range.
Not bad. Kind of a throwback to 80s synth with a modern noise vocal style. More of a spacey feel
Jane Weaver must have blackmail on the authors. 2/5
I'd be lying if I said I went into this album with as open a mind as I should've - a completely unknown dreamy indie album didn't instill a ton of confidence in me - but I still wanted to give it a try. After the first few songs, though, this album was doing absolutely nothing for me. And worse, I could feel this growing resentment about the fact that it was on the list at all. It wasn't influential. It wasn't popular or successful or acclaimed. It wasn't relevant enough for more than a sentence on the artist's Wikipedia page. I can't understand why it's on this list at all, when I'm not even sure it would make the top 100 "indie" albums of the last decade. I'm giving this a 2 because a few tracks had some neat ideas but even those it kinda failed to follow through with. Really frustrated with this one though!
Did not care for this. Really struck me as a sludgy, boring indie album where all the songs sounded the same. I was waiting for it to develop into something greater, or for a theme to emerge, but it just kept on keeping on.
