Undervalued British Invasion band from the 60’s/70’s that doesn’t get enough love.

So cool Sounded whimsical

teccet

Face to Face, an album focusing on the loose common theme of social observation, is often regarded by critics as one of rock's first concept albums. Their first album consisting entirely of songs composed by members of The Kinks. "Sunny Afternoon" was the big hit. Apparently Ray Davies had suffered a nervous breakdown before recording began. Another all time fave of mine by The Kinks.

Why have I never heard this album before?! Loved it from start to finish. Some of the instrumentation sounds a bit dated but can’t argue about the quality of the song writing. Echoes of George Harrison on some tracks too.

Masterpiece

I love The Kinks - they're the quintessential eccentric band. This is by no means my favourite album but still full marks from me. Can't go wrong with Ray Davies' songwriting - he's more consistent than anyone else.

Great listen!!

I keep waiting to find the bad Kinks album, but this ain't it.

This great album, weirdly starts out with the DAVE Davies song "Party Line"... Beatle-esque... but... more raw... Ray Davies, one of the greatest songwriters of ALL TIME is credited with writing it, but his brother Dave, says he wrote it... lol... anyway... "Rosie Won't You Please Come Home" is next... and the unmistakeable nasal brilliance of Ray Davies is fully evident... "Dandy" is typical Ray Davies song craftsmanship... these are the kinds of songs, that in '66, the Beatles simply could not do... it was up to The Kinks... and they deliver... next is the deeply personal "Too Much On My Mind"... there's simply more to life... than to live it... "Session Man", of course, has session man Nicky Hopkins do the harpsichord intro... and who could write this, but Ray? "he's a session man, a chord progress-ian (LOL), a TOP musicIAN"... what a genius... "he's not paid to think... just play"... hahahaha... i can't review EVERY song on this masterpiece, or i'd be here all day, lol... "Rainy Day in June"... is great... "House In The Country"... rockin' and rye... er... wry... Side Two opens with "Holiday in Waikiki"... Ray, to me, loves to the the epitome of the English Bloke... whether at home.. or abroad... "Most Exclusive Residence For Sale" is his take on the, pretentious "upper class"... "Little Miss Queen of Darkness" lol... is a Ray Davies take on ragtime... "You're Looking Fine" is sung by Dave... then comes "Sunny Afternoon"... an entire review could be on this great song alone... and one that, for me, puts him up there with the Beatles, Pete Townshend, or anyone from the British Invasion... Ray Davies is up there with Dylan... prolific, and consistently GREAT... the album ends with "I'll Remember"... the two brothers harmonizing Lennon/Macca style... FIVE STARS... all day long... but, really... TEN..."

- Ich kannte sogar zwei Lieder von diesem Album, hätte ich nicht gedacht - Es macht gute Laune und würde ich sicher nochmal hören Topsong: Sunny Afternoon

Some great songs. The standout is Dead End Street. Better than anything coming out of the British Invasion

The Kinks album that first got me hooked on this great band. One of my all time favorites.

Party Line - 5/5 Rosy Won't You Please Come Home - 5/5 Dandy - 5/5 Too Much on My Mind - 3/5 Session Man - 3/5 Rainy Day in June - 5/5 House in the Country - 4/5 Holiday in Waikiki - 5/5 Most Exclusive Residence for Sale - 5/5 Fancy - 3/5 Little Miss Queen of Darkness - 5/5 You're Lookin' Fine - 4/5 Sunny Afternoon - 4/5 I'll Remember - 5/5 Average score: 4.4/5 (rounding up)

as with any Kinks album, this is truly, truly amazing, and I’m genuinely pissed they didn’t reach the same amounts of stardom as their peers (Beatles, Rolling Stones,) when they very much deserve it - 10/10

Listened to this on a rainy day in July. Shitty weather but decidedly not shitty music.

I'm in love with Face To Face, the music, the lyrics, the cover art... it's all there! A truly landmark album for the Kinks, featuring, for the first time, more mature and less "optimistic" compositions than usual. It's also recognized as one of the first concept albums in rock history, which is no small feat. Also, two of my favorite songs ever are found here : Too Much On My Mind and Sunny Afternoon.

Parecidos com the beatles

Very good I enjoy

Not my favorite Kinks album, but no complaints. They just kept getting better after this.

I got a big fat momma

Oh my god I love The Kinks so much. I think Ray Davies is my favorite songwriter. He certainly my favorite lyricist. I love his empathy and his knack for telling stories about little people. And when he cracks jokes, he always punches up and it's all in good fun. This is the beginning of their peak era, though if I could, I'd give it a 4.5 just because the production is a little weak. It works well enough on the more raucous tracks, but not on the more subtle ones. (Imagine if the Kinks had a George Martin helping them out.) Still, this one is packed to the gills with brilliant songwriting and arrangements. And the energy is great. God save The Kinks!

This album is so great. I liked so much of it, particularaly how The Kinks tend to spill their choruses directly into the next verse, like in both Party Line and Rosy Won't You Please Come Home. Their sound is perfectly poppy, yet it remains musically creative. My favorite is either Rainy Day in June, Holiday in Waikiki, or Rosy. I really enjoyed this one.

It is absurd the leap they made from their previous album to this one. Obviously their proto-punk work in their early albums is important, but this is the start of the Kinks sound I love. Unreal how many reviews can't see the huge influence they had on British music for decades to come. They clearly have carved out their own lane, how are reviewers hearing generic Beatles/Rolling Stones here? Embarrasing takes but a good reminder of the old adage "Imagine how stupid the average person is..." Rating: 4.7

My seemingly very unpopular opinion is that The Kinks are better than The Beatles

Everithing has been written here before. Simply genious!

Me gusta

I’ve learned through this challenge that I really love The Kinks. I always liked them well enough, but never listened to entire albums, just singles. But wow. Every album from them I’ve had on this list so far has been perfection. My favorite songs are “Party Line,” “Rosy Won’t You Please Come Home,” and “Sunny Afternoon,” but there really aren’t any weak songs on the album. This will be on heavy rotation for me going forward.

9/10. Most of the songs made the playlist. Great album.

bands with two brothers who hate each other >>>>

Gran disco

Genauso wichtig sind die Songs: "Too much on my mind" und "Fancy".

Felt like hints of the Beatles in there

Typical Kinks, fun lrics

Top 20 or so

Another superb album from the most English of bands. Better than The Beatles in every department.

Really good mid-late 60's musid

very good album

The kinks has a modern sound, and although it's not on the album, You've really got me is one my favourites.

Unique name. Some unique elements in the sound. Same casual atmosphere. Definitely the same vibe at The Beatles. But definitely not a riff-off. Far from that, it's a different beast on its own. A not-so-common gem of '60s rock.

Awesome, love the sound!

I’ve always enjoyed The Kinks. This was a solid album.

very cool

I have heard of The Kinks, but did not know this album. It was not what I expected at all, but I very much enjoyed it. The album had a sound similar to British bands of that era. Out of the context of the album, I would not have guessed that the band was The Kinks…sounded like other British Invasion bands.

Really wasn’t sure what 1966 The Kinks would be like. But I loved it! It has got a great vibe and is a very good listen. Most of the songs I really enjoyed, and even the ones that I wasn’t completely in to weren’t bad to listen to. My favorite songs were “Party Line”, “Dandy”, “Session Man”, “House In The Country”, “Holiday in Waikiki” and “Little Miss Queen of Darkness”. I love “Sunny Afternoon” and realized that I actually should have known what to expect from 1966 The Kinks as I know this song really well! I don’t know if I would have named the artist as The Kinks though if I had heard it before this. Really enjoyed this. Fantastic album.

Wau! 🔥🔥🔥

Loved the album. An unexpected new classic for me.

The Kinks are, to my ear, the most consistently listenable of the big British bands from this era. I put 'em up there with The Beatles, Stones, and The Who. All of whom were shuffling towards the concept album at this time. This album is thoroughly enjoyable and I'd throw it on nearly anytime.

classic Kinks album, not much else to say

Excellent! Not heard previously and really good.

Ray Davies crafts an absolute treasure trove of 60s pop nuggets whilst indulging his fascination with Englishness and class.

ALready my third Kinks album in this exercise. I love this album. Ray gives us such wonderful little vignettes with colourful characters and places. Many memorable songs. Love it. 5 stars

Great summer feeling album. Stick it on and listen front to back

Really enjoyable album. Fan of the Beatles will like this.

Old and gold

One of my lesser favorites from this band. Village Green and others really tell a cohesive story, this is some cool songs slapped on an album. Still great songs

Love all the 60’s Kinks albums. Easy to see how this made little impact in America and not my favorite, but always a fun listen.

I really enjoyed this one

Very enjoyable

Some solid tunes

Pues los Kinks siguen a tope gustándome mucho

Very nice album. Solid piece of work.

Fun album, always like the work of the Kinks. Favorite track: sunny afternoon other picks: rainy day in June, fancy, holiday in Waikiki

Kinks su po meni ono što ljudi inače smatraju za Beatlese. Bend koji je izmislio sve. Koji možda za današnje standarde nije genijalan ali je od nečeg moralo početi doslovno sve. Drugi najbolji njihov album s liste.

Love the Kinks! Such an underrated band.

Very Beatlesesque. Guess they are from a similar time. Some good catchy tunes and the rest are easy listening.

These guys were so far ahead of the curve compared to most of their contemporaries. No sap, no trying to be a bard from a fantasy novel, just clever songwriting, great hooks, and tight playing

Muy vibras Beatles, me gustó mucho. No se si resalta algun tema en especial, me pareció bastante parejo pero para bien. 8,5/10

This really is just a lot of fun. High quality, unserious, honest and free. Ray Davies made delightful fucking music.

Its production is highly 60s, but it’s super fun. They keep the energy up and every track brings something new. The driving grooves in “you’re looking fine” land it as my playlist pick.

Sunny afternoon obviously the highlight but lots in this

For 1966, this is actually a pretty interesting record. It’s got the 60s sound and production style, but there is a weird and interesting darkness to the pop songs. I’m not sure I loved it in a way that I would relisten often, but I thought it was very unique and kept my attention.

It's fine. They've good and original, they're just not really my favorites

So freaking good. Absolute classic.

I could spend most of the review extolling the virtues of Sunny Afternoon, which is one of the great British pop songs, and was listened to on a sunny afternoon… However, I will ignore this to focus on the fact they wrote a song about session musicians.

Catchy songs, well delivered. Similar pop sensibilities to The Beatles but nowhere near the same kudos and slices of life that differ but have a similar appeal. No one musician here stood out above the others and each member seemed to have an equal amount to contribute which I find can be quite a rare thing.

I enjoyed these fourteen short toe-tapping tracks; it's a fun, bouncy, slightly chaotic record. All I knew from this album until this point was "Sunny Afternoon," and I enjoyed that, plus the rest with the harpsichord and guitar jingling away in the background and lyrics making fun of rich people and such. This was entertaining, I didn’t realize how much I liked The Kinks. 4 stars

Finally, some Kinks! I've always been interested in them but never got into them before I got into this website, so I've forced myself to hold off listening to them. Anyway it’s smack dab in the middle of May, which makes it a perfect time to listen to an album like this. Songs such as the cheeky "Party Line," the incredibly heartfelt "Rosy Won't You Please Come Home," the carefree "Dandy," "Little Miss Queen of Darkness," and "I'll Remember" all help to ground this album in a really beautiful sense of warmth and Britishness. While there's a couple of lulls, they aren't a huge issue, and they're also very much countered by the EXCELLENT "Sunny Afternoon." Much of the album sounds similar to one of the more lush cuts off of "Ram" by Paul and Linda McCartney, especially in the quality of Ray Davies' vocals: faraway, almost fragile at times, and frequently longing, boastful, and woeful. He brings a great bit of much appreciated personality to an already fantastic album. 8.7/10

Liked it overall, only previously heard Sunny Afternoon. Favorite song: I'll Remember

Ok great but where Lola??? -Sunny Afternoon is one of their best, it's so good! -I had never heard Dead End Street which was a non album single and is a bonus track on the deluxe version of this album on spotify. It's a great track!

The Kinks are always fun.

No lo escuché perdón

You can never go wrong with The Kinks. Opzich is het album wel gezellig, maar het heeft niet echt veel inhoud ofzo. Ik heb echter het gevoel dat ik een beetje te streng ben geweest de laatste tijd, dus ik geef het een 4.

04/05/2026 Happy enough and easy listening for a Sunday. Spotify listeners: 5.9 million

This is pretty cool. I like the kinks well enough.

Good album from the 60s. The Kinks were a good group and I enjoy their music.

Typical Kinks with pretty melodies and witty lyrics. Always a pleasure.

This was really fun! Happy and chill vibes. Similar style to The Beatles. Really liked it and would probably listen to it again.

Nice 👍

The Kinks are really underrated

Sounds a little bit like a mix of beatles and beach boys outtakes but I enjoyed it!

I’ve been very late to getting around to the Kinks back catalog; it’s only been happening in the last 10 to15 years. They’re a huge influence on so many bands I love, including my two favorites, The Jam and XTC. So often the influences that shape the artists I love just don't click with me, but not so with The Kinks: I absolutely love this band. From Peter Doggett’s sleeve notes for the 1998 CD reissue: “The first Kinks album to be assembled from a variety of different sessions over a period of months, rather than being bashed out in less than a week…FACE TO FACE ushered in a new identity for the Kinks. Over the previous two years they had created and honed a hard rock sound which has influenced young musicians ever since — and then abandoned it. In its place, Ray Davies designed a unique Kinks landscape, a bittersweet vision of life with all its crushing disappointments and snatched moments of pleasure. Davies peopled this world with a cast of cracked actors, bowing to the inevitable pressures of urban existence but never losing sight of their fantasies of escape.”

It’s like if the first few Beatles albums were good.

7.5/10

I love The Kinks and was happy to get this album to be. I wasn't very familiar with this album besides Sunny Afternoon, but I enjoyed all the tracks and it was a nice morning listen. Favorite Track - Sunny Afternoon Least Favorite Track - Rainy Day in June ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

7/10… 60s pop / proto punk / *1966

Nice stuff! Some cool variety. Ray Davies is a massively underrated songwriter.

Crazy how close to the Beatles they sound at times. It’s like if they had 1 more Beatles level member they could have truly been their rivals or outshone them. Will have to do a discog run but really a big fan. It’s really from the jump, party line sounds like it could be Paul. Highlights: party line, house in the country, sunny afternoon

I listened to this album as I picked up last minute cookies on my way to an Easter Sunday lunch. In yet another instance of an album cover completely capturing its sound, Face to Face is just as bright, whimsical, and mildly psychedelic as the art implies. All of the instrumentation is tight and groovy, cresting these infectious tracks which drive you to boogie down. The vocal harmonies also lend a lot of depth to the singing, creating some really beautiful moments. Some songs lack the catchy songwriting that makes the rest of the album stick so well in your brain, but when this album hits, it hits. The sillier song topics are played with enough over-the-top self-awareness to be endearing rather than grating, and there are some true moments of emotional depth as well. This album I nothing too crazy, it's just some really well done pop-leaning rock, and that's good enough for me! Highlights: Party Line, Rosy Won't You Please Come Home, Dandy, Too Much On My Mind, Session Man, Sunny Afternoon, I'll Remember

have i only be listening to the 60s albums this generator has been giving me lately? yes. do i care? no. is this peak? also yes. very nice to listen on a sunny day. give the kinks a try unless you're allergic to fun

It’s hard not to like the Kinks. Far more English than the Stones or Beatles. They can be more of an acquired taste but worth the effort. Sunny Afternoon is a classic. This album really is a transition from their early records to the Ray Davies dominated late 60s, early 70s classic records.

This album somehow threads the needle of being genuinely interesting social satire while not becoming a slog to listen to. I'm a sucker for baroque pop and you can see on this album the Kinks transforming from another mid-60s pop rock band to something much more unique and creative. It's very evocative of its time and place in a music landscape that often tried to be as broadly appealing as possible.

This is a really great album

I was unfamiliar with a lot of this album. But then the Kinks have such a huge discography that’s to be expected. To me it’s nothing less than a really good, fun and very listenable album. There’s great musicianship, catchy grooves, and a good energy overall. 3.5 rounded up.

This is the third Kinks album this generator has given me. I know what to expect from the Kinks by now, so this record shouldn't be much of a surprise for me. This album consists of the simple, bite-sized pop songs the Kinks are good at writing with some remnants of their early garage rock grit. The songs are far simpler lyrically than on Arthur or Village Green, but they still show a decent amount of lyrical ability. It's a fun little record from the British Invasion era, not being hugely demanding to listen to while also showcasing a good amount of songcraft. It's not a life-changing masterpiece(few records are), but it's still a good album that is worth a listen.

Sure some of the songs feel too short and like half-finished ideas than fully fledged songs, and some feel inconsequential, but they're smart, fun, energetic, and show a band more than rivaling The Beatles.

This was really good although devoid of a lot of hits.

es como los beatles

This is when The Kinks, at least as I know The Kinks, became The Kinks, and it is an absolutely lovely album. Vivid, varied, lyrically interesting, an album that encapsulates who they are.

Hyggelig knippe låter, dette

Fun album to listen to. I love Sunny Afternoon, which is also on the soundtrack of Wim Wender’s Perfect Days along with other cool songs of the past.

I was wondering when I was gonna get a Kinks record. I figured that with the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones getting multiple albums in the 1001 Albums books, the Kinks would be right behind them for inclusion. In fact, we get to skip past their early beat music years and into their more experimental period, incorporating more inspiration from baroque pop and music hall, with a strict self-imposed adherence to English music and culture. The result is that Face to Face is a very opulent-sounding record. Embellishments like the harpsichord and Mellotron enhance their psychedelic, hook-driven songs with a more grandiose stance. Tracks like "Rosy Won't You Please Come Home", "Too Much on My Mind", "Session Man", "Fancy", "Dandy", and especially "Sunny Afternoon" have that extra oomph to their instrumental compositions, as the Davies brothers traded vocals in their witty musings on their homeland's culture, social norms, commercialism, and the music industry. Of course, the band still knew how to rock out on cuts like "House in the Country" and "I'll Remember", with the kind of musical showmanship that seemed expected of them. It is a testament to how competently each band member played and how polished the production was. That said, I don't think every song clicked well for me. The album started on a rather odd note with "Party Line", as Dave Davies sang about wanting to meet this woman he spoke to over the phone, wondering what she looked like and whether she was a she at all. It's a rather daft observation compared to most tracks on this record. I feel like they would end up covering this bemusement and confusion over a possible woman better on their later hit, "Lola". Similar sentiments could be said for the underwritten tracks "Fancy" and "You're Looking Fine", even if I dug the sitar-esque guitar playing of the former. Still, I had an overall good time with Face to Face. It is an important step in the Kinks' sonic evolution, and I expect their English-oriented experimentation and songwriting were further refined down the line.

This was a first listen for me - I'd only heard Sunny Afternoon before (which has been one of my favorite songs since I was little). I loved the album as a whole. Rainy Day in June was a particular standout and may be one of my favorite songs the Kinks,

This is my platonic ideal of The Kinks sound, think there will be a string of kinks albums in this period that I will really like 4.5

I do like The Kinks

Not bad, I went and listened to a bit more after

God bless the Kinks. Favorite track: Sunny Afternoon

The kinks do not disappoint.

Solid and fun! But I think I’ve said this previously of The Kinks, I basically just want to listen to the Beatles or Stones instead. Sunny Afternoon an all-timer though. (3.5 stars)

Not super memorable, but fun! 3.8 stars

Best way to enjoy 60’s music

Kinks are fun, they bridge that Beatles to good music divide of the era

Highlights: Party Line, Dandy, House in the Country, Holiday in Waikiki, Most Exclusive Residence for Sale, Little Miss Queen of Darkness, Sunny Afternoon, I'll Remember Compared to the previous Kinks record I got on this list (Arthur) this one sounds more like your typical 60s pop rock. That being said it's a fine example of it. I liked it but it wasn't as good as the Beatles.

Chad to chad 4.5

I like a bit of The Kinks, but I didn't love this. "Sunny Afternoon" is a classic no doubt, some songs were pretty decent, but the rest was just not bad. Better than most of the other 60s generic garbage on here though. 4.

Good shi

Had the Beatles sound but a little cheekier

actually pretty decent, better album than the last one and also contains a number of memorable songs

Another great listen. Probably not the most ground-breaking album for The Kinks, but still a solid offering of overtly British pop-influenced rock. I’m here for it.

sure, that's interesting enough. doing several different things, none of them are super compelling individually but it's a fine package. i do love the vocal harmony writing in this style and era.

Songs from This Album started my introduction to the kinks back in the 70s I remember the storytelling sort of songs with the British feel that this album brings. Overall a great album.

The Kinks rule. It's like if the Beatles had some stink on 'em. If I heard this album in a vacuum it might get 5-stars but it's hard to put out of my head just how good their future work ends up being.

The Kinks are real story tellers on this album. The lyrics are just as important as the musicianship, and all together makes a excellent listen. There is only one well known track on this album but you won't be disappointed with any of the songs. Great stuff from the mid-60's! 4⭐️

My favorite 60s band besides the Beatles. This album is great but it’s not as great as Lola vs powerman, kinda kinks, or self titled kinks. Curious if the others pop up on the 1001. Sunny Afternoon is an all time jam.

fun, upbeat, classic. Not something I'd just throw on, so not full rating

THere’s this question i like to ask my fellow film lovers to prompt discussion around the lunch table - take way the three top films for any director and evaluate their career? it works on two levels - first  - what are a given director’s best three films?  some seem obvious but that is the first step.  it is best to stick to tradition here (ie - Coppola is GF1/GF2 and APOCALYPSE NOW - you can argue the CONVERSATION should be included but not matter how great you it is - RUMBLE FISH is not making the top three.)  so once you remove the top three the real debate begins.  Some directors re an embarrassment of riches.  Let’s take Scorsese.  Remove TAXI DRIVER, GOODFELLAS and THE DEPARTED (as noted above - i am arguing for the relative merits of THE DEPARTED over RAGING BULL or MEAN STREETS but that’s the point - Marty’s only academy award is for THE DEPARTED so let’s just go with it).  Once you remove those three you have RAGING BULL, MEAN STREETS, KING OF COMEDY, WOLF OF WALL STREET, AFTER HOURS and COLOR OF MONEY still on the table. Those would be quite a career for anyone and does not take into account the other ~15 films that most directors would take in a heartbeat  - really everything except NEW YORK NEW YORK which is/was a cocaine fueled mistake/experiment that i respect but find unwatchable.  Compare that with Peter Bogdanovich (RIP).  The early days are hard to beat - THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, WHAT’S UP DOC? and PAPER MOON are masterful (shout out Polly Platt who would vacate her role here leaving him to languish). That’s quite a three move run at the dawn one’s career that would certainly seem to indicate future greatness.  but instead we get things SAINT JACK, A SAINTLY SWITCH (utterly ridiculous) and HUSTLE (the story of Peter Rose).  MASK is fine NOISES OFF is a serviceable translation of an excellent play.  But you really get a sense of who he was as a filmmaker versus someone like Scorsese.  There is really no comparison.  This is not to take away from the works that PETER B created that will live in the cannon.  it’s just that you see an artist differently when you track their career.  It elevate someone like STEVEN SODERBERGH who has done a lot of quality films over a long period of time ever if not all of thew hit.   What does all that have to do with this album?  It’s a top 10 KINKS album but probably the lower half of top 10 (for me) - but still better than 95% of the albums on this list.  Simple baroque pop that feels lived in.  The Kinks do so much with so much less.

the hits are perfect, the others really good

Pre revolver kinks were better than pre revolver beatles

Its the kinks. They are the cool band tk like i guess but they have music to back it up. If the beatles never came along I think the kinks would have been that timelines beatles. Now this record in particular is pretty good but not perfect. I hate to constantly bring up the beatles but its similar with both bands how I feel about the really early stuff. Its good but not in the same league as the later stuff. Its more simple and metered. Its just a touch less interesting. But still very good. Sunny after noon is the song here. And its so damn good. I was also partial to house in the country. Anf everything else in between is good but maybe not that standout for me. The guys make good music and its high quality from front to back but maybe not all that memorable for me. Still very good ill let you know

I could’ve sworn I had already had a Kinks album but apparently not so this is my first time listening to them. I really liked this one, I enjoyed every track on it without anything blowing me away until Sunny Afternoon. Bloody brilliant song. Top Track - Sunny Afternoon

sunny afternoon 1966 united kingdom rock

Solid kinks , low 4/5

Face to Face is definitely not as good as Village Preservation Society for me, it’s a low 4 still though, some delightful pop songs in here and will revisit just doesn’t grab me as much

I wish this album was a little darker sounding. I’m having trouble rating it. I kinda think I would choose the stones over this.

I liked a lot of the storytelling songs at the beginning of the album.

Do these blend together for me a little bit? Yes, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it. Awesome storytelling, moderate to industrial strength tambourine use.

i love these types of songs

Always nice to hear some British Invasion-era pop. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

Enjoyable 60s, with a few more psychedelic tones here and there. All around great album, will definitely give it another listen.

Fun album.

Great album. Favorite songs: Holiday in Waikiki, Fancy, Party Line

In a list full of British things this is the Britishiest

didn't listen to all but liked what I heard

Not their strongest, but at this point, they have a floor of 4 stars. 4/5

Personally I like this mode for the Kinks better than their more conceptual work from the late-60's/early-70's. Songs just for the sake of songs, rather than being a part of something grander. Not that I don't enjoy concept album, I do a lot. I just don't think the Kinks are the best suited band for that. Great sunny and quirky atmosphere. Key tracks: Party Line Dandy Sunny Afternoon

A fine rock Album. Fav: Sunny afternoon

The Kinks are just awesome

Great band with some really good tunes here. Should be up there with the rest of the 60's pop.

Peak 60's Kinks. This one is right in my wheelhouse - mid-60's rock and roll that's starting to dip their toe into new waters like psychedelic and concept. It gave me similar feels to a Rubber Soul. Definitely an album that I'll be visiting again.

Very listenable

Love The Kinks, Village Green is among my favorite albums. This was great

What are these reviews dismissing The Kinks as not standing out from the Beatles and the Stones? Have you listened to the lyrics, to the weird nasal tones of Ray Davies, to the economy of their arrangements? Whenever I hear them I always think I should be listening to them more often.

This is good. I can hear the evolving humor, wit, and finesse of the Kinks. I’m not a huge Kinks fan, but their influence on Rock and Punk and my childhood are undeniable. I really appreciate the humor they brought to their craft. A 4.

Så jävla mycket bättre än Stones! Inte Kinks bästa platta men man hör att storverk är på g redan här. Mysig ljudbild, skönt driv.

A notable album for moving away from the amped-up RnB of the early singles and into English character observation. With the advent of the Arthur and Village Green albums, this initially feels unremarkable in retrospect - but is a surefire grower with each listen. It doesn't feel it has the importance of Village nor Arthur; but there's a real ramshackle charm here, as well as some of their best album tracks. I went from feeling this a 3, to nearly a 4 to an actual 4.

Between Lola and wondering if the girl on the phone is a man I think their kink is chasing. Anyway. This is mostly good. There’s a couple of big lulls that really slow the momentum. I like the kinks fun and goofy, less painful.

It's good. All I can think of is Wes Anderson though, even though I don't think he used any of these songs specifically. very british.

Good sounds

A great little 60s record here

It's decent... But not my favourite Kinks album

A great album but nowhere near as good as the one we had earlier this week!

Expected hard(er) rock, but this album was more along the lines of pisstake rock. The unexpected hint of satire is something they wear well though.

the kinks

Getting the Kinks out (and playing them). ★★★★

Classic Kinks.

These guys sound like a cooler Beatles. I definitely relate to Too Much on My Mind. Good stuff. This is a 4 for some early 60's jams.

'Hubby's gone away / And while the cat's away / The mice are gonna play.' The Kinks's Rubber Soul, tho as a lyricist, Ray Davies was more biting and deliberate than either Lennon or McCartney, e.g., compare 'Session Man' to 'Paperback Writer.' It seems to me that The Kinks were the first to see that 'conceptual' music could most easily get going from a satirical and/or critical perspective, preferably in relation to commercial society/capitalism: 'Why should he care if he is hated in his home / 'Cause he's gotta a house in the country, / And a big sports car'; 'And I can't sail my yacht / He's taken everythin' I've got.' As such, the most soulful/bluesy tracks like 'Rainy Day in June' and 'You're Looking Fine' unfortunately feel out of place. Still, nice.

Back when I was a teenager and all about the Who and the Stones I really neglected the Kinks. I wish I'd given these guys more attention, this is some really good shit.

Album 962 of 1089 The Kinks - Face to Face (1966) Rating : 3.5 / 5 A nice slice of that signature Kinks sound I’ve really come to enjoy during this project. This one is considered their first true “concept album,” with Ray Davies turning his focus toward social commentary and the complexities of British life through character sketches and little snapshots of everyday people. To give the full concept its due, I’d need to sit down again with the lyrics in front of me - but even on a casual listen, the charm and craft come through. Musically, it’s classic mid-60s Kinks: catchy melodies, clever arrangements, and that mix of rock, pop, and wit that keeps them from sounding like anyone else. Nothing felt out of place or forced, and even if a few deeper points went over my head this morning, I still enjoyed the overall trip. It’s a thoughtful, well-made album that shows the band stepping confidently into a new creative direction.

admittedly, never went too far into the kinks discography, but i knew the big songs on this album. But i fell in love with other tracks that i havent heard. This album feels so far ahead of its team, and holds up very well.

Die Musik und Titel kannte ich zum teil, Der Band name nicht, Sehr schön ich geniesse es und tanze

This is the first great Kinks record, a giant leap forward from Kontroversy, which was the first glimmers of where Ray’s writing would go. I don’t think there is a weak song here, but also it’s not quite at the level of Village Green, which is the perfected version of this record, and imo the pinnacle of The Kinks. One thing that leapt out at me was Holiday in Waikiki, which sounds a little like a first draft of Heroes and Villains. I’m sure BW heard this and was inspired. But also Ray really nails the vibe of touristy places and how fake it all is. Another thought is that Damon Albarn must have listened to this 1000 times because it sounds like a lost Blur record

Fun. Enjoyed listening to this

They were as good as the Beatles until the Beatles took music to new places.

Might even grow to a 5.

Love the Kinks. Album off to a strong start, steady songs throughout and of course Sunny Afternoon is a classic. Better than Something Else By The Kinks, but not as great as The Village Green Preservation Society.

Pretty fun album, can't say I was expecting a harpsichord in most of the songs. My big issue with a lot of the 60s bands on this list is that they all sound exactly the damn same. Quoting a review from this site for a Mamas and the Papas album: "Most 60's groups had three choices: copy the beatles, copy the beach boys, or sexually abuse minors." These guys chose to copy The Beatles, but actually did their own thing with it, and by that I mean they used a harpsichord. Jokes aside, most of these songs are good. I especially like Rosy Won't You Please Come Home and Rainy Day in June. Lots of interesting lines and a fun feel no matter what direction the music itself goes in. Definitely one of the more creative albums of the 60s.

Great project. Catchy, beatlesy, great example of the other music coming out of the 60s that stands toe to toe with the other guys

Love it, fan of the kinks

This was so good. The Kinks remind me of the Beatles.

The satirical writing saves this record from sounding like a stereotypical 60s British rock album. Even then, I still find it quite enjoyable

A big step towards the brilliance of Something Else, Village Green, Lola vs, Arthur and I'm going to throw in Muswell Hill. Not perfect, but still pretty great.

This album encapsulates the British Rock'n'Roll sound of the 60s perfectly for me and adds a lovely ray of sunshine to even the coldest, cloudiest autumn morning. My favourite song, even there are a lot of great ones in here, is Sunny Afternoon.

The grooves made me groove. Rockabilly-Punk aesthetic with a pop undertone. Toss in a little Country-Rock and some silly, yet intriguing lyrics. The juxtaposition is what makes the Kinks so compelling. I put 'the Kinks' up there with 'the Band' as underrated musical units; cursed by being very well recognized and appreciated, and yet still not receiving the full credit they should. That probably doesn't make any sense. Whatever!

Good, not terribly long, some real bangers. The style does wear on you after a while.

нормалек.

I really enjoy The Kinks - this has some great songs on it, but never reaches the compelling level of "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" or "Lola and the Powerman 5000". Still a great listen though.

As a songwriter, Ray Davies does an excellent job of creating a song out of, in my opinion, just looking around and writing about whatever he happens to be going on. Dandy & Sunny Afternoon are the hits but the rest of ‘em are catchy well. A band that was big but should have been bigger.

the Kinks hebben bij mijn weten geen slechte platen gemaakt

Weird, I could've sworn that I was listening to the Beatles. At any rate, the album is great brit-pop and very listenable.

Love it but it is more singles than a one whole art piece.

Fun album by a legendary band. Love the stripped down sound, their harmonies and arrangements. Yeah, this is The Kinks.

It’s interesting how many albums in 1001 fall into that category of being lukewarm upon release but later recognized as pivotal, and I feel this is no exception. Face to Face marked a tonal shift for The Kinks, moving away from their raw early sound toward something more introspective and thematic. You can see why it’s often cited as one of the first true rock/pop concept albums. This is the sound of a band beginning to experiment. Not just musically, but narratively, weaving character studies and social commentary into their songs. It might not have made an immediate splash, but in hindsight, it feels like the bridge between the early British Invasion energy and the more artful, story-driven albums that followed. A fine and fascinating entry in The Kinks’ evolution.

Album #36 of my 1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die List The Kinks - Face To Face I love the Kinks, they rocked hard, were obnoxious & wrote songs that poked at certain muckety-mucks in society. The album Face to Face was a change from the You Really Got Me days. The songs were a little smarter, though still poppy, with a more baroque style. The Kinks never really broke big in the US, mostly due to being banned due to their all-around crappy behavior. Had they been able to tour here, I believe they’d be in the same stratosphere as the Rolling Stones & the Beatles. According to Kinks historians, this is the album that kicked off their golden age & was also the 1st, or 1 of the 1st, concept albums in rock music. The highlights for me are Party Line, Dandy, Session Man, You're Looking Fine & the hit, Sunny Afternoon. This album is phenomenal & would be a great introduction for someone who wanted to explore the Kinks.

Not the best kinks.

Very good!

I was honestly a little surprised by quite how much I liked this. The Kinks are a band I know from singles only and whilst I generally do like those, I didn’t feel like there’d be much depth to them in general. Turns out most of this album is great! Highlights include _Rosy Won’t You Please.._ and _House in the Country_. There’s a slight lull at the start of the back third but it gets over that with a really strong finish, closing on _I’ll Remember_, proceeded by the classic and my… **Fave track:** Sunny Afternoon

Gostei muito! Não conheço The Kinks em profundidade (talvez uma, duas músicas) e o álbum deixou-me relaxada, animada, muito semelhante ao que sinto com The Beatles, o que é muito bom!

++*: You're Looking Fine ++: Dandy, Session Man, Rainy Day in June, House in the Country, Holiday in Waikiki, Most Exclusive Residence for Sale, Little Miss Queen of Darkness, Sunny Afternoon +: Party Line, Rosy Won't You Please Come Home, Fancy, I'll Remember +-: Too Much on My Mind 7,9/10

Fun, light hearted album. Lots of short catchy songs, I especially enjoyed Session Man, House in the Country, Holiday in Waikiki, and Sunny Afternoon.

Very good as well, I think the dude who sings most of these is my favourite singer/songwriter in the band. It’s got that quintessential Britishness which I think they adopted on This album, and it set them apart from other bands. I do wish some of the songs were longer, as it feels like they come and go too fast, but I guess there’s a lot of them. I don’t think I’ve heard a bad album from them so far, I think this is on par with Arthur, if not a tiny bit worse and the village green one is still my favourite. Favourite songs: party line, Rosy won’t you please come home, dandy, too much on my mind, session man, the house in the country, most exclusive residence for sale, holiday in Waikiki, sunny afternoon, I’m not like everybody else, dead end street, this is where I belong, Mr. Reporter, little woman. Overall around 7/10

I enjoyed this album

This was a good album.and reminded me of early Beatles and The Monkees.

Sometimes I think that music began in ~1972, but then there's an album like this one. It's consistent, enjoyable, but maybe not enough hard hitters and the quality that speaks of its time. Not the strongest 4, maybe a 3.

Never heard of The Kings before. Saw “1966” and figured: this will be a 3 chords, boring album. Then was surprised that it starts with mersey beat (early Beatles), transitions into harder rock (early Stones?) and the Who territory. I bet the Kinks were highly influential, but through some bad luck not so famous as the rest. Not as groundbreaking as Revolver (same year), but works better as an album (less fillers). Only 4 stars as the recording quality is only meh, and for some strange reason they back loaded the album (last song: Sunny Afternoon - ah yes this one I know and LOVE! But didn't remember it was The Kinks). Could have even left out the first 2 songs, would have been a better album.

not bad, nice sound

Another album that makes me want a record player in my living room with this just playing. Such a vibe.

Fun, but definitely not on the same level as their following three albums (which I absolutely love)

I think my boyfriend who likes Ska music would enjoy this one, it was not ground breaking for me but goo background music

Top 3: Rosy Won't You Please Come Home; Dandy; Rainy Day in June Banger after banger, what a fun album. Very short songs but very enjoyable, don't know how I haven't found them sooner.

A bit bland for a kinks album

Solo por Sunny afternoon merecen estar en esta selección. No son Beatles no son Rolling pero son fundamentales en los 60.

Social maladjustment and class warfare, all with a beat you can dance to! Well, you can’t really dance to it - not even to “Come Dancing” years later - but you can bang pots and pans and throw dishes and tell the rich wankers to shove it up their arse!

Too much on my mind is up there for me

Good album.

Always been a fan of The Kinks. They sometimes get lost in the shuffle of the other rock bands from Britain. But this was pretty enjoyable. Maybe a little too much harpsichord. 4/5

Decent Beatlecore album! Quite enjoyable for the 60s!

I really like the Kinks but this isn't their best for sure. They definitely made better records later in their career. Still great music and great lyrics. 7,5/10 fav songs : Too Much on my mind & Holiday in Waikiki

Awesome to hear how clearly influential they were to the 60s

The Kinks were one of the most important and influential British Invasion groups who made consistently great albums in the second half of the 60s. Face to Face is no exception from it, it's a really great collection of songs with one big hit, Sunny Afternoon (though overall The Village Green...or Arthur are better albums).. Ray Davies is a very good songwriter who deserves a lot of credit for these great albums.

In terms of their contemporaries, the Kinks live almost perfectly at the midpoint between the lightheartedness of the Beatles and the down and dirtiness of the Stones.

The fullness of the sound impresses, as does their ability to write about everything under the sun in an age of love songs. “Dandy” and “Sunny Afternoon” stand out, but the rest are worth a listen. 3.5

Maybe not their best but probably the one I return to the most. Even the fillers are fun. Ray really stepped up his songwriting game on this one.

I always enjoy The Kinks, but I rarely listen to them. It's good to have an opportunity here.

Wait, baroque pop can be good?

This album was fun to listen to and is that type of timeless music that makes you feel good. I can only imagine how it made people feel when it first came out in the 60’s! I will definitely be listening to this one again on a sunnier day with some leaves in a pipe.

Summer vibes, sunny afternoon is a classic. We'd not listened to this album before but it was a pleasant surprise.

Bruur van de beatles best funky

Vivacious, provocative, energetic. Good dirty fun

Fun and 70's kooky

This is a very pleasant listen. Fun, trippy, light. It’s masterful whimsy. They seem to be all over the place. It is definitely of its time, as it feels like the wild, Wild West of what a song can be.

Every Kinks album on this list is super.

Fantastic album enjoyed the sound energy, tone shifts, environmental mood effects and just being a very 60's sound with slight improvements in certain areas.

Protypen för all britpop. Jag har alltid gillat the Kinks, men face to face var bättre än förväntat

bit samey, but good kinks

Had a few that I didn’t like, but overall it was a fun album. Ray Davies is a great songwriter, and the lyrics were definitely the highlight for me here.

The Kinks are always enjoyable.

Overall: 7/10 Kind of a hit or miss album, but I enjoyed more than I disliked! I like the artpop feel and the vocals quite a bit. It's definitely trying to be as artsy as possible and that's okay. The one thing I don't really like is the overuse of the harpsichord. It got a little irritating after a while. Fav Song: Sunny Afternoon Least Fav Song: House in the Country

Yes! I like this! I was a huge Blur fan as a teenager and totally see how much albums like Parklife and Modern Life Is Rubbish pull from this record. It goes back and forth from aggressively British kitsch to truly timeless rock. Great songwriting. It's just straight up real good.

Ooh I generally like kinks songs so let's see. Fear there could be some lame shit on the albums but I'm excited to learn. No lame shit here!! I love their sound honestly. I don't know if as an album it's doing any more for me than just like having This Is The Kinks on shuffle but that didn't exist in 1966 so that's moot. I'll say that I swapped equalisers a few songs in and realised I'd been screwing it over with the bass boost. There's too much twinkly keys going on to be drowning it out with the bottom end. Party Line, Too Much on My Mind, House in the Country, Little Miss Queen of Darkness are my immediate standouts. Sunny Afternoon too obviously. What a song. Didn't care for Fancy... i think I'm establishing through this project that i don't like psychedelica. The elves and gnomes line on rainy day in June was more of a jumpscare than the thunder effect. Nah fairs i listened twice. Couple of wobbles but I think that's more on the track order than the tracks themselves. Ray Davies has one of my favourite singing voices going. Sorry for being British.

i'm a big kinks fan but although i think this is a good album, i don't think it's a great one. it's nearly there and they would get to that level with their next large handful of albums, but this one has always been a bit below the other "classic" kinks albums. that's not to say that there aren't songs i love on here - particularly 'sunny afternoon' but also i really like 'rainy day in june,' 'dandy,' and 'rosie won't you please come home' - but the album cuts here don't get to the highest level. it's not a bad album! i just know it gets better than this.

What a lovely album. Guess I’m a foppish British gentleman now

Still kicking myself for not snagging this record when it came in used while I was working at a record store. I wasn’t hip to it, I don’t know what I was thinking. Maybe I thought it was one of those post-Muswell Hillbillies records. Who knows. This doesn’t have any of the big radio hits, or any of the songs you’ve heard in a Wes Anderson movie (so far), so enjoy! A hidden gem! The Kinks were just cranking out the great songs at breakneck speed in the 60s, and this is the sound of them hitting their stride. The only reason I wouldn’t rate this a 5 is that there’s no 4.5, and Something Else and Village Green are coming around the bend at some point.

Really nice album. I had assumed some of their hits on the radio to be beatle songs and never explored them before. Cool discovery and looking forward to their other albums

Mielenkiintoinen levy kyseiseltä vuosikymmeneltä. Tykkään.

Like the Beatles but more calm

Lovely example of the early brit pop rock scene. These lads proved every bit as good as the Beatles, perhaps better as musicians. Brilliant!

It feels like a watered down white album, but I love the harpsichord sounds!

Great sound. Not too much stands out

Really nice album. One of the cases I'd prefer a 10 star rating scale to have a better differentiation in contrast to other albums. 8/10

Like any other Kinks album. Sounds fine but there is a ceiling for my level of enjoyment. Low 4.

I tend to like 60s pop, Kinks are just more boring Beatles, Sunny Afternoon slaps, good album

I confess to having had to mature a lot before I could hear and appreciate Ray Davies' genius. Take even a song like Too Much On My Mind--voice and guitar quietly open, layers adding, then eventually the quiet outro. I never heard it before and love it. Great muzishean. Compare the Kinks Waikiki to what the Beach Boys of the time would have done. Exclusive.

Just Dandy! Perfect for a Sunny Afternoon!

Classic 60s British Rock. I have this album on vinyl but don't play it often enough.

For reasons that would take longer to explain than you care to hear about, I've criminally underestimated The Kinks. That's sad for me, but the upside is I get rewarded when I hear an album and realize how freaking good they were as songwriters, players — the whole shebang. So, this is great, wish I could have been a little more engaged as I listened, but I'll come back again.

This is another Kinks album that I really liked. Party Line starts it off with what I would term to be a "Beatle-esque" sound and the album gets even better from there. I knew quite a few songs on the deluxe edition: Party Line Dandy Sunny Afternoon I'm Not Like Anybody Else Dead End Street Mr. Pleasant This is the second straight Kinks album I have quite enjoyed and I have come to believe their albums should be considered as important as the albums from other 60's British bands who shall not be named but could shit popcorn out their ass and it would get five stars.

A comfortable 4/5 for the album for me. Sunny Afternoon is a 10

As much as I would argue every Kinks album should be on this list, I have to say this one has always been among my least favorites. But it’s loaded in charm and a sense of positivity and whimsy that is missing from virtually every album post-2000.

It's not hard to go the distance when you finally get involved Face to Face.

Listening to this album was such a delight! 🥹 The lyrics were simple, melody and rhythm charming! It felt like I’d been whisked away to a quaint little town — some songs had me hopping from one cozy party to another, while others had me strolling down a cobblestone street on a rainy afternoon! The best song was Sunny Afternoon (but I have to admit that I have heard that song before 🙃 ) Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

So good. If the worst thing you can say about a band is that, while they tried mightily, they never quite got to be as good as the Beatles, well, that’s high praise indeed. I like the Kinks more every time I hear them.

Actually really like this album- all new kinks songs to me except sunny afternoon and one I will come back to. Still sounds 60sish but has an extra layer (musically or lyrically) that makes it stand out often.

It's all there, just need a few more albums to hone the introspective song writing

Nice. 'Sunny Afternoon' is perfect.

This has that kind of "look at us, we’re clever" charm that totally works when you're in the right mood. The melodies bounce, the lyrics wink, and it’s got that retro sunshine baked right into it. Chock-full of that "happy", almost blissfully-ignorant 60's sound. It’s the musical equivalent of a collage made with safety scissors. Definitely feels like a Spring cleaning soundtrack. A few songs kinda blur together, but it’s a fun blur. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Dandy - Sunny Afternoon - Dead End Street

good vibes meilleur que les beatles 🫣

-groovy - really solid album

Fist four tracks are great tunes; “Too Much On my Mind” is particularly good

“Party line” kicks off the album with a catchy pop / rock and roll sound, really representative of the time it was made and really catchy. “Rosy won’t you come home” is different, almost leaning into psychedelia like a lot of music at the time was, but with a strong pop sound. Not too far off a Beatles track. “Dandy” is relatively similar, leaning more towards simple acoustic rock. “Too much on my mind” is more Beatles-esque. I like the lyrics on this one. “Session man” sounds very similar. “Rainy day in June” leans more into the psychedelic qualities and is better for it. There is a return to rock n roll on “House in the country”. They might not do these songs as well as The Stones, but it still sounds good. The second half of the album begins with “Holiday in Waikiki” which features some good guitar work and a catchy melody. “Most exclusive residence for sale” does a similar job - the instrumentation isn’t as good but the lyrics are intriguing. “Fancy” is the weakest so far, not very memorable. “Little Miss Queen of Darkness” is better, a very simple sounding song but sounds great with a nice melody and instrumental. I have similar feelings about “You’re looking fine”. “Sunny afternoon” is the most popular song on the album, and for good reason. It’s all of the best pop & psychedelic moments from this record into a song with a catchy melody which makes for a relaxed 60’s classic. The album ends on a strong note with “I’ll remember”. 4/5.
