Reviews (page 12 of 14)
Led Zeppelin
I felt societal pressure to give this more listens and change my rating. It’s a great album, I jumped the gun and was riding the wave of rating everything I listened to either a 5 or a 2. No more middle of the curve ratings, I said. But then I just listened to some thrash metal, hated it, and realized this was a far superior listen and deserved more. It’s theatrical and dramatic, a bit too much wailing, surprising blues, and a little more rock than I tend to want to listen to. I still stand by my original review though: “It’s just not for me, and that’s okay.”
I want to like Led Zeppelin more than I do. But I just don't. They have a few really great songs. This album does not contain them. That said, it's still good enough for an average rating. Of the songs on the list, I think I liked the first one, "Good Times, Bad Times" the best.
Learning to be a fan
It's alright. Not their best. Stand out song - How many more times
dazed and confused as well as good times bad times are stella, the rest kinda mid.
Some classic Led Zep songs here on their debut, but also a few that put me to sleep. It’s still good, and for any other band this would be the high point of their career, but by Zep standards, they would go onto bigger and better.
It's a good start but a little meandering. Some great tracks (Babe, Dazed, Communication). How Many More Times great closer (and references Plant's work witj exis Korner and the song Steal Away). Is it a 4? Not quite.
Really struggling between 3 and 4 here. Objectively this is a great album. I know I would be happy if someone else puts it on. But I don’t think I will often, if ever, have the urge to put this on myself.
Ok
They just don’t do it for me. I suspect you have to get into them when you’re 18.
Liked this!
I like Led Zeppelin, and one album is enough. I dig the blues roots and appreciate the impact they had, both positive and negative impacts. I'm not sure if I can distinguish differences in their albums, but I hope to try through this project.
One minute I’m rocking out, the next I’m dancing, the next I’m taken to church. A mixture of different vibes but all consistently loud.
led zeppelin spila blússlagara. finnst þetta allt í læi.
Good classic rock. I like the bluesy feel to it.
This is my third Led Zeppelin album so far. Each one has had one or two really good songs - on this album it's Communication Breakdown, but I find the rest a bit plodding and samey. Led Zeppelin is a slightly more interesting album than IV or Physical Graffiti with a light psychedelic influence, but it's still not enough to get a four. A greatest hits band for me.
I have a complicated relationship with Led Zeppelin. I've spent a lifetime being ambivalent towards them. I've learned that I like Led Zeppelin III, thanks to this project, and Houses of the Holy outside of the project. I've also learned that I absolutely despise Led Zeppelin II. Which brings us to Led Zeppelin's S/T debut: The Bad. There are songs on the albums that were exactly as I expected them to be: kind of shitty. I *hate* "Good Times, Bad Times" so fucking much. Incredibly irritating. "You Shook Me" is equally annoying in how it robs the album of its momentum (the killer keyboard solo couldn't save it). These are some of LZ's worst tendencies. Then, there were things that defied my expectations: "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" features an empassioned vocal performance from Rober Plant, likewise with "Dazed and Confused", a song I previously thought I hated (I actually really enjoyed the psychelic detour before the drumps kick back in). "Your Time Is Gonna Come", despite being a bit repetitive, was delightful, and the transition to "Black Mountain Side" was perfect; the track itself is light and breezy. These were all gifts when I expected to enjoy nothing. Fairly middling album with pretty high peaks, but tremendously low valleys. My inner critic says 2, but I'm still shocked I like Led Zeppelin at all, so a 3 it is.
I love led zeppelin. But honestly, this isn't that great an album. With hindsight, you can hear where they'll end up. But the album itself is a little slow and not that great.
Fun, but didn't always keep my attention.
jimmy page had sex with a 14 year old girl
overhyped album by an overhyped band. tries to sound revolutionary but flops every time i listen
harmonica poppin' off waaaaahhhh waaahhhhahahhaahhhh (same) i cant tell if its just not for me or i've been traumatized by too many guys that listen to zeppelin to enjoy it oh this one is good (black mountain side) how many more times? no more thank you im full not really my jam but i can appreciate the musicianship of it all
good album over but didn’t like the abrupt endings to the songs they seemingly had no transition between tracks
Ech fends no geil wie Led Zeppelin Intromänt isetzt.
#5 Led Zeppelin ~ Led Zeppelin Alongside the gradual implosion of the Yardbirds towards the end of the 60s, guitar rock music in Britain had its slow evolution out of blues into more ambitious territories. Eric Clapton continued his tradition of psychedelic rock by going for more dreamy, laidback and trippy solos with his band Cream. Jeff Beck took his seminal distortion techniques and dressed his sound with a jazz fusion flavouring. Jimmy Page decided to stick to the basics: a blaze of technical riffs and solos, just louder than what he had done with the Yardbirds. And so the New Yardbirds, later dubbed Led Zeppelin after a suggestion from the Who's Keith Moon, was founded. Its destination was mostly the same as with the Yardbirds: rock and roll. Page and his new bandmates, singer Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, all have the chops to do something dazzling. Good Times Bad Times is an amazing starter for the album to showcase the technical strengths of the band: an appetiser for the next 8 songs. And throughout this album, Led Zeppelin perform, almost as if a live concert, blues song covers and originals in a heavy, bombastic heart-pumping rock. And man does it sound quite fucking amazing for a debut. The sound of this album is much more subtler than future releases as the band scouring through multiple variations of their sound from psychedelia to the rock akin to CCR. It's quite obvious that although the band works as if one, they aren't sure about their vision for their sound as of this record, and this is may be because Page is still hesitant about Led Zeppelin as a working project. Take into context, the death of the Yardbirds marked a turning point for rock, and critics were very critical of the thought of reviving such a band, even under a new name. And because of this already hostile backlashing, some of the songs here may seem overcompensatory. Page can drag on a bit without any substance, and Plant's voice can also feel a bit held back. I'm not being totally critical of what happened in this album, I commend the great ranges that Led Zeppelin have tried out here, but there's definitely still moments where the band needs to be a bit more tighter and less meandering with their sound. Cause I must say, Side 2 can feel like a chore to listen through. Not many bands can hit quite this hard for a debut, and not many bands can enter the scene with great ambition. Led Zeppelin's debut is a record that represents the great strengths of a band that is quickly ironing out their clinks, and feel determined to take the world by storm through sheer power-riffing and solos.
Very revolutionary, but a lot of the blues tracks start blending together like a cigarette fog. Favorite Song: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Whatever
Liked it more than I remember, but Zepplelin has never been my favorite. 3.5 stars rounded down. It is weird to pick up on all the blues in the old music. Also, didn’t care for the weird news article song.
Objectively solid, not my thing
oh hey, it's the band that plagiarized like half their songs Good Times Bad Times - 4/5 Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - 5/5 You Shook Me - 3/5 Dazed and Confused - 5/5 Your Time Is Gonna Come - 4/5 Black Mountain Side - 3/5 Communication Breakdown - 4/5 I Can't Quit You Baby - 3/5 How Many More Times - 3/5 Average score: 3.8/5 (rounding down)
Not my favorite Zeplin album, but a classic jam the whole way through either way.
Close to a 4
This feels like one of those albums that was super influential when it was released. I’m having a difficult time grading it though because I am already familiar with much of the music that it influenced. Overall it’s pretty good, although the vocals get a little too much for me at times and the music gets a little meandering for my tastes. 3+ stars but not quite enough to round up.
Kinda what I would expect...its ok, will I put it on again...unlikely.
A buoyant, passionate, energetic debut which had me, someone who struggles to connect with blues tinged rock, nodding my head enthusiastically. I predict big things for Led Zeppelin.
pretty good overall! the pure instrumental songs (or maybe mostly instrumental? idk) are pretty forgettable, and the final song reaaaallly drags, but good aside from those small issues!
the first two songs were pretty good but it just kind of fell off from there
It’s fine music, just not my jam.
Singing was super awkward, songs blend into one another and never seem to end...
The front half was interesting but the back half was kinda boring.
One of my least favourite of led zeppelin. Understandable since it's their first album, my personal favourite is led zeppelin ll. But my favourite song on this album is Your Time Is Gonna Come
Pretty decent! But probably my least favourite Led Zeppelin album, which makes sense as their debut and the fact they still had to find their footing.
More varied than what it seems.
not the biggest fan of hard rock 7/10
Some great band performances here but a little too meandering overall. Favorite track: Good Times Bad Times
Good.
I like the tabla song
I feel like I should like it, but I don’t.
Never much of a Zeppelin fan but I see why this one is a classic.
Guitar go brrrrrp
Hard to not like some Zeppelin. I’ve never done an album of theirs from top to bottom before so this was fun. Cool to see them have their magic from the beginning. Lots to enjoy here but I’m not sure this is the one I’d come back to aside from a few tracks.
Any Zep record is a mixed bag for me. The lows and highs on this one cancel Each other out. ***
Some of the better sounding rock of that time 3
Not music that drives me crazy to have on in the background but also not something I would choose myself. I bet the lead singers voice could grow on me, but I found myself excited by the beauty and interest of the music and then a little annoyed by the voice. That’s the only thing that made me want to turn it off. But respect to what they’re doing because overall it’s a great and influential album, just not 100% aligned with my taste.
An iconic band with iconic cover art, this album and sound define the late 60s supergroup rock era. It's not my favourite Led Zeppelin album, so I hope I get a further opportunity to review them a little higher. Solid 3. Standout tracks - 'Dazed and Confused' and 'Good Times Bad Times'
Slow and rocky, pretty good but nothing special
Oh, well, too bluesy, too few great songs. Also sounds old.
First two tracks are stone cold bangers, though memory tells me this record is a bit patchy. Ah yeah, the covers. Just blues cloggers. The originals are probably great but this isn't what I want from Led Zep. Great playing of course, that goes without saying, so it's still enjoyable on that level. But we know what the band are capable of so let's get on with the original material. And to be fair How Many More Times is enjoyable. Dazed and Confused is an absolute monster. Kind of a precursor to the fantastic Since I Been Loving You. What a bassline.
There were a lot of cool moments on this album but none of the songs worked for me as a whole really except "Good Times Bad Times".
Exceptionally well made album with superb musicianship. I cannot, however, give this more than a 3: I simply hate rock. My antipathy is not due to the music itself. No, rather my hatred of this genre is owing entirely to the type of dude it spawned. I HATE guys who love rock. They’re all 40-60 year old dickheads who INSIST that this is the coolest music ever and that, by proxy, they are also super cool for being fans of it. They love classic cars, nudie calendars, and loudly complaining. In short, they are 12 year olds stuck in the bodies of men. By endlessly propagandizing Led Zeppelin as the coolest music ever, they have inadvertently made it lame. It has become a caricature of itself. Thanks Gen X and the Baby Boomers, you ruined your own favourite music for everybody born after 1990.
3/5. Iconic vocals, some of the more upbeat and energetic tracks are good. Noticed the lyrics are all kind of bitter towards women, who hurt you hahaha. Not my favorite Led Zeppelin work.
Some great songs and some mid hair band songs
Ok, etwas aggressiv.
Revolutionary, iconic, genre-defining. There's a lot to love off I, it's a great introduction to some of the most talented musicians of the 20th century. 'Good Times, Bad Times' for example hides so many virtuosic elements within the first couple minutes - Bonham's ridiculous fills, Page's manic solo, and Plant's passionate wailing at the end. What drags this album down for me are the record fillers - the huge singles are the only songs I'd go back to for this, and unlikely that I'd redo the whole album anytime soon. Best Tracks: - Good Times, Bad Times - Dazed and Confused - Communication Breakdown Worst Tracks: - You Shook Me Rating: 7.5/10
As much as I love Led Zeppelin, I have to rank this as a run-of-the-mill Psychedelic Heavy Blues album. There's a ton of potential here, as history has shown, but the actual material doesn't live up to what came after it. This record was somewhat rightfully panned by critics when it was released. I think the author's bias toward debuts was misplaced here. I'm giving this one a reluctant three stars, with a bonus half-star for just being Led Zeppelin.
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.
Much more bluesy than I was expecting
Definitely one of the more iconic rock sounds of its time, I'm going to say that I didn't really care for the song writing though. A lot of what they did on guitar and drums as one off sounds in the middle of a song was cool and interesting, but apart from that the album was really all over the place and most of the songs were like six lines long followed by and endless jam of disparate rock ideas.
Good moments, clearly groundbreaking for the time but sounds of the time to me. Some of the studio trucks moving the panning of tracks around feels gimmicky now but was probably sick back then. A few songs were very good, most of them were just okay. I liked it, but it’s not as amazing as I expected it to be
3 iconic songs with a lot of feeling things out indulgence. For Zep this is a good start but the better work comes later
Music is nice, vocals are decent. Songs are just long, drag on. Music is great, points just for that. Best song: Your Time Is Gonna Come
It bore me.
Meh Zeppelin
- Babe I'm Gonna Leave You instantáneamente me atrapó y probablemente es mi canción favorita del disco.
Zeppelin came out swinging with “Good Times Bad Times” but I unfortunately liked it less as it went on. I’m familiar with some of their hits and loved some of their later albums, but this lost me about halfway through. Jarring transitions, wavering vocal performances (imo)… musicianship was great but something is dropping my rating without me able to articulate it. 3.25/5 - maybe my expectations were too high and was let down..
3.5 Like I’ve said before, Led weren’t a formative band for me, never got into them as a teenage boy so I just don’t have the deep set affection for them many do. I think it’s good, alright, and this one was better than a couple other Led albums I’ve heard. I do think this is the FIFTH one I’ve listened to for this project? Really? Did ALL of them have to be on this list?
Always a good album. Only two original songs though.
Not my cup of tea
Good artists copy, and great artists steal. Led Zeppelin took it too far, though, committing grand theft their entire career. While that earned them praise throughout the ‘70s before finding source material was as easy as it is today, in retrospect, it makes them gross by today’s authenticity standards, and it also makes me realize how stale they actually were as a band. I want to start off on a couple of positives. Zeppelin I starts off so strong! I think “Good Times, Bad Times” is a flawless song, and has enough proto-metal that it feels unique. Following it up with an interesting cover of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” that has power and soul behind it actually works very well. If this record kept up this vibe, I’d be all-in. Unfortunately, from there, this album slips and never really recovers for me. “You Shook Me” is just a basic blues cover with little variation, as is “I Can’t Quit You Baby.” “Your Time Is Gonna Come” is a standard fare hippie acoustic-driven song, very much not my vibe, and [apparently] my least favorite type of Zeppelin song. And “Black Mountain Side” is a guitar interlude that goes on for a minute too long. I don’t really love any of these songs, at all. I can acknowledge that Zeppelin are good musicians– although I’m surprisingly not the biggest fan of the way Page solos, truthfully; it sounds a little too improvised, almost like he’s fumbling– but none of these songs inspired intrigue for me. But I will say, though it is a standard blues track, I do enjoy the energy “How Many More Times” brings to the table, and I think if this record had that energy throughout its entirety, even with the blues-basis, I’d be a lot more into it, even though I would still view it as a cover album with a few pastiche songs. The real issues for me, however, are “Dazed and Confused” and “Communication Breakdown.” I’ll start with an issue they both share; for some reason, they don’t flow in the sequencing naturally, and they stand out like bent nails in a dinner room chair. That may be a Spotify issue, sure, but I feel like the mastering clips the ends, and it rips me out of the groove. Yet on their own, I like these songs. Well….okay, see, that’s the other thing. I think they are fine songs. I’ve known them for most of my life, how could I not enjoy them? But also, when I listen back to them, they’re both….a lot thinner than I remember them feeling? In my mind’s eye, these are bombastic, powerful juggernauts; on wax, they’re as tough as Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild,” aka, their rebellious attitude has tamed with time and now feels about as hard-edged as Miranda Cosgrove cursing on a podcast. Still good songs, but they are a lot duller than I remember. Plus, y’know, the “Dazed and Confused” issue. To briefly write my thoughts down, I like the original version a LOT, it is very good, and Page/Zeppelin 100%, unequivocally stole his song basically note for note, to the point where it’s basically a cover. But, if it’s a cover, it’s one that actually adds a LOT to it, and I think the full band composition along with the harder groove and Plant’s lyrics do something to elevate it as the superior version, although it never in any way adds so much that they earned the right to call it an original song. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for that song because it was the first song I ever really learned to play on the bass (not well, but I learned it), maybe it’s just a good cover, especially when all the other covers here suck. I think I can still tolerate the track, but it’s lost a lot of power, both on face-value and in context. What I’m left with is about 1/3 of a record with bland covers or songs that sound like covers (why has this happened to me twice in a row?), a 1/3 of a record that I sincerely enjoy, and a 1/3 record that I thought I loved but I actually feel largely apathetic to, or straight up have outgrown. When Zeppelin I is good, it’s good, but to me, it’s mostly not good. Some of that is because it sounds way more dated than I expected, some of it is because there’s only so much stealing you can do before I wonder if you have anything original worth saying. I won’t act like this isn’t an important record, but this is way too overhyped and does not have the bite of its self-proclaimed bark.
I love Led Zeppelin, but I've never loved this album. I like it, but it's just too bluesy for me to love. If blues are your thing, then by all means enjoy the hell out of it. It's just not my personal fave.
I grew up in a household that never played any of this kind of music, so I didn't hear Led Zeppelin until I was in high school. I was not into them much growing up and I am not much into them now, except for when I want to be captivated by John Bonham's drumming.
This is a good album, but not my favorite from them. A nice introduction to their style and talent. I'm not a big fan of the blues stuff, but they really do it well for some British fellas. I like Communication Breakdown as a favorite. Only a 3 on the rating. This isn't their best work.
I might like it more on repeat listens, but I wasn't blown away by my first listen.
Hmmmm
It was a classic Zeppelin album. Of course very good. Fine.
Opener was great, babe i'm gonna leave you was super extra but I enjoyed the build up a lot. Overall I liked this, it was explosive and energetic. I did find it a bit grating after a while but that is probably on me. I think this is a 3.5.
Decent. 3/5
Im so sorry mom
I don't like them. Sorry
I mean, it's *OK* I *quite* like bits of it, but it rambles too much for my liking really. And I've heard better versions of Dazed and Confused. I should probably like this more than I do, and I managed three listens on my commute. But it just doesn't quite do it for me.
Dazed and Confused Babe I’m gonna leave you
Led Zeppelin is too stressful for me
Led Zeppelins första skiva. Blues? Hoppade över halva "Dazed and Confused".
Overall.... Idk, I really wanted to like this album. But just felt a bit slow and sloppy for my tastes. I could imagine this being so awesome in a stadium. But listening in the car, it slowly slipped into the background. TBH on a nice speaker system, if I was on drugs, I may have liked this a *lot*. "Good times, Bad Times" - The drums are very sick. The guitars are very cool. But feels a bit all over the place? "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" - Fantastic vocal. But otherwise a bit lackluster for me. "You Shook Me" - Tbh, I did not know that Lead Zeplin did blues. Crazy awesome vocal. Just feels very 12 bar blues idk. "Dazed and Confused" - Instrumentals are sick. Song feels like everyone is high out of their minds. "Your time is gonna come" - Love the gang vocals. "Black Mountain Side" - the tablas took me by *surprise*. I quite like this, feels very out of place. "Communication Breakdown" - This kind of rock is just not my jam. Feels sort of unpolished? Like they found one lick they licked and made a song out of it. "I Can't Quit you Baby" - Back to blues, I liked this one a bit more. "How Many More Times" - More big drums here to save the day. Feels again all over the place.
I really wanted to like this, but I just never got into it.
joa woa ok
reisst mich wenig vom hocker
Even the greatest had to start somewhere
I can only take so much of Robert Plant's screeching and moaning. It makes it very difficult to list to an entire album without getting annoyed by it. However, musically, this album kicks ass and would be a lot more interesting without the gratuitous screeching. Not their best album.
Truly showcasing the best and worst of Zeppelin. The good songs are rocking and catchy. Infectious riffs. And then shitty awful unending screeches and horrible white man’s blues that’s embarrassing to listen to.
I can see why people like it good for its genre but the three tracks that are essentially long 12 bar blues really aren’t for me
Such a Blusey album. I’m not sure what is in the liner notes but I hope they thank and pay tribute to all of the blues artists who inspired this album.
Yeah nice stuff but not their best
I have another 2 of these to go and my tolerance for hearing Robert Plant screech 'baby' repeatedly has already reached a critical low point How many more times is an accurate representation of my own psyche as I wonder how many more songs I am going to hear with Robert talking about his (certainly of age) 'girl'
I’d like Led Zeppelin more if I couldn’t understand a single word old mate was saying. If I never hear the word baby again it’ll be too soon.
Getting this out of the way first. Once you have actually put time into listening to real blues music, the theft on display here is absolutely shocking. You Shook Me is the worst example and the organ track on that is ESPECIALLY egregious. These mfs should pay fucking reparations. Yadda yadda they’re also paedophiles, you get it. I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, I honestly could not picture myself getting into a studio with my mate and he starts moaning and stroking his shit like Robert Plant, I would never be able to look that man in the eye again now that I’ve seen the depths of his depravity. In reality however, this inspired the band to shove a mudshark into a woman’s vagina and (possibly related) Jimmy Page to kidnap a 14 year old girl to keep as a sex slave. Disgusting shit aside, it’s Led Zeppelin, man. The album is good, the songs are overly long and go all over the place. This shit was designed for white boomers to listen to while they get high and try to fuck their missus (consent optional). Some songs here are punchy, exciting and well done and others drag to an eye-rolling degree. They’re not even that long but man sitting on a plane with this as your only source of stimulation beside the lady next to you watching Derry Girls or the guy on your left watching Challengers while you’re listening to I Can’t Quit You Baby makes you wish for Carlos the Jackal to hijack your plane “You hear me moaning and groaning, baby” yes Robert mate, for nearly a fucking hour. Highlights: Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, Dazed and Confused, Black Mountain Side, Communication Breakdown
Unique combination of clear vocals and instrumentals.
Their best was to come. You can hear where they are going and it's a decent album.
I liked it, more than Zep 4. In general, I don't really want Led Zeppelin an album at a time, though.
W porywach 3,5.
If me in High School knew I would give Led Zeppelin 3 he would be flabbergasted. But he knew shit. I understand why it was huge why it's influencial and it's pretty close to a 4.
Ensuite “Babe I’m gonna leave you”, proto “Stairway to heaven”, passe plutôt bien mais comme souvent beaucoup trop long. “I can’t quit you Baby” est bien au-delà de mon seuil de tolérance.
Decent
I've listened to the album for years - it is good but certainly not their best. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is a classic. Not an album experience I return to often, but good nonetheless. 3/5
If the album was like the first few songs it would be a 4.
Enjoyed this but didn’t listen particularly hard 6/10
Bonham was still alive when I first heard Zeppelin and 45 years later they still leave me wondering what all the fuss is about. I will hear a song of theirs on the radio and think mmm that sounds alright I’ll give the album a spin but always come away feeling unsatisfied!
I should really like Led Zeppelin and I really want to but their music just does nothing for me. Technically it's really good but I just find it boring. No song really jumps out at me, there were the occasional bits, sure, but not enough to keep me interested.
Ok
I understand why people like it, but it just doesn’t do it for me.
Listening to this high must feel like you’re in the 60s
Wtf how do I like Zeppelin this much
It has been a long, long time since I last listened to this album all the way through -- more than likely it was on vinyl. In that spirit, "Side 2" is fantastic. The church-organ intro to "Your Time Is Gonna Come" still impresses me. "Communication Breakdown" is a rocker. The solo on "How Many More Times" is one of the all-time greats. It's not Led Zeppelin's best work - Robert Plant's lyrics and vocals would improve over time, Page would be less interested in replicating blues riffs and craft an original guitar sound, and the band would become much tighter. So the album is more or less Zeppelin's origin story.
hints of the greatness that is to come. and still pretty damn good on its own
Mostly a good listen, but loses points for the album being so front-loaded, and also for how much they ripped off other artists without attribution. They have better albums, I'm sure.
A strong opener and a couple of OK songs, I just don't seem to "get" this band
This was definitely pretty good but didn’t entirely click with me still, hard to say why!
Another band of which I'm a hater. Enjoyed on this listen... Will re-evaluate one day
Un po' troppo matto.
not as good as I wanted it to be. the kind of music that a band would play at a live bar; no one is really listening to the music but it's a nice accomp to a conversation 5/10
Their debut album is what many bands' best album's sound like.
Pretty decent, but maybe not my favorite Zeppelin album.
I was never clear which song came first, Babe I’m Gonna Leave You on this album, or 25 Or 6 To 4 by Chicago. But I’m convinced someone copied someone. The good about this album is its slightly saturated, gritty, natural rock sound. Early signs of that Tolkien-inspired-folk here and there. And hey look! Black Mountain Slide is the obligatory Indian-style jam, as every rock band had around this time. The bad is the insane amount of whining about women/his woman. It was par for the course during this time, but Robert Plant just doesn’t stop. Additionally, even though it’s their first LP, you can already hear the imitating of black vocalists from time to time.
I think the problem for me here is that the instrumentation doesn't match the pace of the music. It feels so dischordant to me to have these heavy electric guitar solos and some screaming vocals when your song feels like it wants to be listened to on a lazy afternoon.
Rockin! So, this album came out in 1969, their debut album, with the Hindenburg disaster as the cover art. The first track Good Times Bad Times might be one of the coolest opening bars I've heard in this 1001 album journey so far. It reminded me of opening of the "Bellbottoms" track, which came much later in 1994. Granted, I've never been a hard rock guy, so there is a limit to how much I can love this album, but I'm glad I took the time. I guess it makes sense that my favorite track would be the soft, lamenting "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". The verb "ripping" comes to mind. A lot of these tracks have this drilled bassline and guitar riffs; they're so energetic, which is why I guess I often hear them in film soundtracks - very "Oceans 11". Last thing I'll say is how much Blues I heard in this album. It is like someone took Blues and amped it up. A few times you hear classic blues riffs and blues moans and groans, but with these sky-high distorted guitar riffs. I can imagine it was a different sound for the time. Excited to hear more! Fav track: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Ok
Good
Not my favorite Zep album, but a classic nonetheless
really strong first half, then it dies down a little too much. cmon LZ you gotta keep that heat all the way thru !
This is an album full of screaming and that little fucking organ plinking away. It's not NOT good, but it's also not my favorite thing to listen to.
Starts off strong, Zeppelin as a rhythm section thundering along. Some of the rare Jimmy Page that stick to the burst of chaos & skip the tacky move of trailing off into high energy blooz. I thought this first outing might be the Zeppelin to get four stars. Funny to go right from that last verse of Good Times, Bad Times right into Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, still not a bad song if you can put up with Robert Plant. They had to ruin it pretty quick with You Shook Me, and after that it seems like about the same awesome/garbage mix as the other three albums. Black Mountain Side is a nice arrangement of Black Waterside. Would be nicer if Page hadn't said he wrote it. Led Zeppelin had an interesting run of four albums from 1969 to 1971, a steady three stars for their mix of excellent rock, unethical conduct and terrible taste, before they disappeared completely off the face of the earth. An intriguing tale. music: ...appreciated. (⌐-_-)
Alright this is the last one on the list (I think). In the end, it’s my favourite one. It’s probably like a 3.4 or something. Some of the songs rock so hard, Good Times Bad Times especially. What an opener for a debut album! But also there’s a lot of stinkers, and I still simply to not care to hear Robert Plant Doing His Thing. Goodbye Zeppelin it’s been fun, sort of.
Putting all the standard blues stuff aside / some jewels still stand out / rough and raw / love more the songs that came later / BUT: „Dazed And Confused“ / monster song
not bovved but not shit
A nice start. Can't go wrong with Led Zeppelin. Not my favorite of theirs but still a great one!
44 minutes of robert hollering and jimmy showing off his epic guitar skills
Listened to this while playing Isofarian Guard. I didn't actually recognize any of these songs...but that's not surprising as I didn't grow up with any of this music. It was a lot more bluesy than I was expecting.
I guess it takes a fair bit of self confidence to come up with this swagger for a first album.
I really like the first track and communication breakdown. But it just annoys me how they’re constantly ripping off old blues songs. They are the 20th century’s most brazen plagiarists.
This was my first listen to a full Led Zeppelin album. Honestly, I am all for acoustic guitar under a strong voice - one reason I love Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. I do think that the tracks got perhaps a bit dissonant for the lack of a better word especially on the guitar front. Still a fun listen, would rate it a 3/5.
Not the best Zeppelin album to me. Zeppelin overall is a bit overrated. Not saying they're bad, but I don't get where all the mega hype comes from.
Ah yes. The epitome of the genre dad rock. I appreciate the heavy guitar solos, the drums, the sound. Visually, I appreciate young Robert Plant's long curly hair, the bare chest outfits, the oversized buckle belts, obviously attracting the eyes to the sexual bits. Emotional cries into the microphone. Lots of theatrical drama. I just... I like all that on mute XD. Robert Plant's voice annoys the heck out of me.
Not bad at all! Was expecting a little bit more energy
I'm kind of disappointed by this album. Led Zeppelin III and Led Zeppelin IV are fantastic, and I expected this to be the same. But it's just okay. It isn't a bad album by any means, but there are plenty of better rock albums out there (and a few much better Zeppelin albums).
This is a decent album but I’ve never fully understood why LZ are so revered. Other than Babe I’m Gonna Leave You I don’t think there’s any big songs.
3/5
I was expecting a lot more and it just didn’t go there for me.
very good listen. not generally my style
surprisingly..... this was kinda cute. kinda boring at times tho 🥴
In semi-recent (like 10 or so) years, I have become a much bigger fan of Zeppelin than before. I really enjoy this one as well, although I don’t think it lives up to anything that came after (the next 3 albums are light years ahead of this one in my opinion) but there’s plenty to enjoy here.
I have the same perspective as last time: Jimmy Page is a fantastic guitar player Robert Plant’s vocal aren’t my thing It can sound pretty same-y and I don’t dig the sound enough to not care. However, this album had much higher peaks for me. I freaking loved “You Shook Me.”
Solid, good album. Zeppelin is one of those bands that people always throw in their favorites. It was fun to listen to a full album from them. We’ve already listened to a number of self-titled albums. I actually liked Iron Maiden better than this, so I am going to put it at a high 3!
It’s crazy that this album, Willie’s “Red Headed Stranger”, Zappa’s “Hot Rats”, and Hayes “Hot Buttered Soul” came from the same era - a testament that this is a wonderful world! Mostly knowing Zeppelin from their hits as singles, this album sounds to me like an album Led Zeppelin took inspiration from to make the real Led Zeppelin albums.
Lots of good songs on here. Better than LZIII imo.
Meh...not terrible, but not for me. 3/5
Appreciate the musicians’ skill in Led Zeppelin, but I don’t enjoy this band as much as some. Love black mountain side.
Classic album but isn’t my fav sound.
Oh. One of the classics I know but have never actually listened to. Decent album. Won't go into my heavy rotation, but it did give me an appreciation of why Led Zeppelin are still held in such high regard.
Lots of amazing stuff here, but a few meh songs pull down the rating. Looking forward to listening to the rest of their stuff. There’s some great potential.
I think Led Zep just aren't my thing, tried all of their classic albums and while none of them are bad, none of them really moved me either. I start tuning it out once it gets towards the end. There's some rockers on here, no denying that, but i'm not wanting to start it over once it finishes.
Cheers
a lot more bluesy than I thought
Parts of this are great, but it’s weighed down by the other wandering noodly parts that are sleep inducing.
Its spotty but rhe spots are really good
Surprisingly I'm giving this a 3.
bland compared to yesterdays masterpiece...
This shit must've been crazy in 1969. But for every Dazed and Confused or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You or Communication Breakdown, there's a lame, meandering blues rock track that doesn't do much for me at all.
:-)
It took me until I was about 45 before I finally made the (significant) effort required to listen to all the Led Zeppelin albums. Prior to that I wouldn’t give them the time of day, with Kashmir, Stairway and maybe Immigrant Song being the only tunes I could stomach. I felt then, and maintain now, that Jimmy Page is an average guitarist at best, and most of their music is too derivative to put them on the silver platter on which most rock fans see them. Yes, Plant has a unique voice and the strong frontman charisma needed in his role. Yes, JPJ clearly has genius musical sensibilities, and yes, Bonham is a monster behind the kit. However… Led Zeppelin is just NOT THAT GOOD! I can only assume they became rock royalty because there wasn’t anything else like them at the time. They upgraded heavy folk into the next era at a time when Sabbath was doing the same for metal and Purple for prog rock. Now, this first album - it’s way more than derivative. It is simply copying what was already on the airwaves,) with an additional injection of testosterone and arena-ready production. People say you needed to be a toker to listen to Pink Floyd. I think Led Zeppelin deserves that label more.
Listening to this, I've found out that classic songs are classics for a reason. Dazed and Confused and Communication deserve all the praise they get. Also, the two opening tracks are great. However, I've also found out that I utterly hate slow blues, so I Can't Quit You Baby is unlistenable. The rest of the album is just there, neither to enjoy nor annoy.
Listened to before, but not for a while. Fuzzier than I remember. These are classic Led Zeppelin songs, but not my favorites. But you can't deny the quality performances. Definitely a harbinger for things to come. "Got me a girl, and I kissed her and then and then Whoops, oh no, yeah, well, I did it again"
It was OK
Classic old-school rock
I was planning on listening to this album and the rest of the Zeppelin discography after getting Zeppelin II so I was excited for this. Not my favorite but still has some bangers.
Dazed and confused I can't quit you baby How many more times
There are a couple of great songs, but the rest are disgusting and embarrassing me, 3/5
Sounds like Led Zeppelin. Page and Plant were meant to find each other. Not my favorite, but undeniably a great album.
idk i canr get into led zeppelin too much. still good though to listen to
This is good, wasn’t blown away.
Better than I remembered. Most of this album is good. I don't like the basic blues songs. There's a couple of those. I don't like the vocal acrobatics on some of the songs either. The production is not up to today's standards, but it's not terrible. Favorite song: good times bad times.
I absolutely get why this is on the list but it’s not for me.
Better than III, I guess
This one is ok
Led Zeppelin's debut album. A little milder than most of their subsequent efforts and consequently a bit of a easier listen. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Good Times Bad Times Date listened: 19/05/24
I've never liked Robert Plant's voice which has always made entry into the Led Zeppelin catalog difficult. I appreciate a lot of their work (Dazed and Confused, Communication Breakdown are great), but this album (while groundbreaking at the time) is an I dunno. Maybe too many covers considering where the band goes? I'm much more interested in the crazy story of the end of The Yardbirds into Zep--WTF, nobody wanted to stay in that band. This one is a 3.5 for me, but trending down to:
I'm a hater for this band and I can't even deny this album. Dazed & Confused is a perfect song. B
Onhan tää hieno aloitus sarjalle, vaikke leppari LZ ole. Dazed on mainio. 3/5
Kyllähän tää debyytti edelleen kohtullisesti kolisee. 3.5/5, pyöristyy ehkä kuitenkin alaspäin.
3.5⭐️ classic rock
A clsssic. Did not realize at the time I was listening as a kid how much they were taking from other artists.
3.5
Classic band, probably classic album if this is your kinda genre. It’s not really mine but I did enjoy it for the most part! Some of the most iconic riffs ever!
Good toooons
There are better Zeppelin albums out there. The lead track on this one is known, but I can skip the others.
Very 12-bar-blues inspired, very obviously revolutionary. The songs I saved from this were Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, You Shook Me, Dazed and Confused and I Can't Quit You Baby. Dazed and Confused was my favourite.
The instrumental is incredible Fav songs: You shook me
Look, maybe Led Zeppelin was a pioneer of blue-sy rock, but to me it all sounds the same. Not bad, but just doesn't vibe with me. Kinda boring.
Babe im gonna leave you rocks, the rest im mostly ambivalent about. Glad i listened tho
Classic Led Zepplin. Not as experimental or refined as later albums, but a fan wouldn't be disappointed.
Legendary band with a great album here.
I like Led Zepplin but this isn’t my favourite of their albums. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Babe I’m Gonna Leave You Rating: 3
Rock mit ordentlichem Blues-Anteil. Ich müsste es eigentlich mehr mögen.
Listened Before? N Well, I had a history lesson today... about the formation of led zeppelin and the relation to the Yardbirds. The fact that these guys weren't some garage band was news to me, they were formed from the ashes of the Yardbirds and knew LOTS of famous musicians who helped them get a start. They were even considered a "supergroup" somehow, which is also surprising. Enough about all of that - The album is good. It's probably not LZ's best work, but they were still finding their sound at this point. Very bluesy with moments of acid and hard rock, it was a good foreshadow of things to come. I really liked it - I find it better than LZII from a personal opinion, but I find it falls short of LZIIII. Anyway, a solid effort. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Dazed and Confused
Great songs here and there.
A good album, but I feel like I never have to hear Led Zeppelin again. Forgot how influenced by the blues they were and it's all over here.
Starts off strong but the second half was kind of weak.
This is undoubtedly a good album, however yesterday was just NOT a Led Zeppelin day, so I skipped it. Too much chaos. They fuckin rock tho
Just okay. The instrumentals were good but there's just too much British rock on this list and everything melts together. Favourites: Babe I'm gonna leave you and black mountain side. 3/5
I mean like it's Led Zeppelin. Idk what else to say. It's pretty good, I think if I hadn't taken a break (to grind uni assignments) I wouldn't have liked it as much. High 3/5, I wouldn't add any songs to any playlists but I liked it lol. Favourite: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (😢😢)
Back to regularly scheduled programming with this one (all male English rock band). Hooray. I will say though that I've been wanting to listen to Led Zeppelin's music. It was okay, favourite song was Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby (chill guitar solo) were also pretty good. Listened to this album like 3.5 times through, but I think it's going to be another 3
Muy chabon
A masterpiece
Was fine.
It's an okay album! Listend this this back in 2020😭‼️‼️ 1st half is banger while the end half not so much
actually liked this a lot more than I expected to. If I am honest, this whole challenge has made me appreciate Led Zeppelin far more than I have over the years. I have tried with them before and never fully connected, but revisiting these albums properly has changed that. This debut is raw, heavy and full of confidence. Yes, some songs stretch out longer than I would prefer and there are moments where the guitar solos feel a little indulgent for my taste, but there is no denying the power and presence of the band. Good Times Bad Times is a brilliant opener and Dazed and Confused has that dark, hypnotic edge that really works. The blues influence is clear throughout, but it is delivered with real intensity. Favourite songs: Dazed and Confused and Good Times Bad Times Least favourite song: You Shook Me Album artwork: Legendary cover. Instantly recognisable and perfectly matched to the weight of the music
Derivative
great album, just not my favorite Led Zeppelin album which would be led zepp lll
7/10
Meh. I like Led Zeppelin but this album didn’t really do it for me.
Very solid album, though I think they have some better. Really liked the couple of blues type songs. You can tell they are going to be a great band.
Good musical sections with the guitar and drums, blues feel, nice tempo changes throughout. Says the word baby too much
Expected Lorenzo rating: 4
Fun, not memorable
Bangers with a few lenghts in between
I should like Zeppelin on paper. I like British blues rock. I like guitar solos. I like monster drums. And I have to say I like this more than any Zeppelin listening experience I can remember, but it's still not something I'd choose to listen to personally. Maybe it's Robert Plant's vocals. Yeah, it's probably the vocals.
cool
Good but I prefer 2 and 4. Communications breakdown is really good.
Exactly what you remember.
dasidjasdjas
Hard to judge objectively given how entrenched in the culture these songs are. I listened to this record a lot as a teen and really have no need for it going forward, but it's hard to deny what an earth-shaking monument and artifact this record is.
3/10
Eh
Slide guitar on "Your Time is Gonna Come" is a nice touch - really like this track as its one that hasn't been played to death on the radio - organ is so good Good album but radio play has killed some of the tracks for me
Not a huge fan of Led Zeppelin but I didn't feel the need to skip any songs or stop listening. Just average experience for me.
C'mon, it's Led Zeppelin! Boring ... ok, first part was cool.
I would not really listen to it but it's quite okay (one of the better ones till now)
This is a lot of instrumental, long riffs, just chilling album. Not their best, but if you are a fan, a must, if you are a casual fan, skip it.
Best song: babe im gonna leave you (not even close)
neither good nor bad, doesnt stand out
3, nice to listen to and 1 banger
Not a hard rock fan but I could handle this one time
Never been a fan, but also I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would.
Good for music whilst doing other chores, some standout songs but I wouldn’t sit through all of them if I was listening to music as my main activity.
1/4/2024 Favorites: Good Times Bad Times, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Dazed and Confused (Cool but a long bridge with a lot of effects). Some of the tunes are heavily blues based.
Some classic jams. Some tracks are overly long and self indulgent.
LED Zeppelin's debut album shows where the band was heading musically years later. There is still blues-inspired music here in many places and Robert Plant's vocals are not yet like those on later albums. In this respect, this record has historical value, but it doesn't go beyond average quality.
No groundbreaking thoughts
It’s reheated yardbirds and stolen Jeff beck. Apparently beck was in tears when he heard it. 'What the hell, Jim? I thought we were friends!' The Jeff beck group took what cream and the who were doing, combined it and made a rocking album or two. Then Beck bogert and appice extended it. If plant and jones and bonham weren’t so good it’d be awful. But they are that good. Page is as well. But often he’s the least interesting player. Which is really saying something. A great guitarist, sure. But compared to what jones and bonham do ... And there’s a sense where it’s magnificent. Good times bad times is one of the best album openers of the rock era. Having said that, it’s more a portent of what was to come than a finished product. So 2 out of 5. Maybe 2.5. Should have been 4. But they stole most of it.
Decent. I've come to accept that Led Zep will probably never be really for me, but this has some pretty cool songs on it. Can't get into Robert Plant's vocals, but... There's a whole lot worse out there.
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I still can't get into Led Zeppelin. I'll be the first to acknowledge their talent and fame, I like other bands from the same era and genre, but for some reason these guys just don't do it for me. For years I've tried to figure out what I'm missing but for the life of me I can't figure it out.
There's a lot of base elements that have clearly influenced Hard Rock. However they feel less cohesive.
More mellow again than Led Zeppelin III.
“Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” is my favorite Led Zeppelin song. That’s all I have to say about this album.
Another debut album by what would become one of Britain’s rock ‘n’ roll greats completely larded up by a couple of awful, wannabe, white boy blues garbage tracks. The fact that you shook me is sandwiched between babe I’m gonna leave you and dazed and confused is one of the worst crimes in Led Zeppelin‘s entire career, statutory rape, not withstanding.
"baby"
It was fine. I was expecting great things because I've never really listened to them before but it didn't really live up.
It was decent, could hear how it influenced a lot of early heavy metal. Liked some of the blues references as well.
Definitely see why this had as much impact as it did. Doesn't overstay it's welcome and the wild, free-wheeling riffs never completely lose control. It's just never gonna be wholly for me, but that doesn't diminish the power. Three and a half. Fave track: Good Times Bad Times
Pretty chill i guess
half the songs were too long for me! bit liked the shorter ones
Great mix of rock and blues with some classic well known songs. May be overplayed these days, but still holds up in the end. 3.5/5 Would listen again.
Pretty solid debut album, though I wanted to like it more than I did. 3.25/5
Showing off all their talented music skills on this record has aged well, unfortunately some misogynistic messages have not.
Mixed bag. I'm not that crazy about the slow bluesy ones.
Led Zeppelin doing led Zeppelin things. Couple bangers but some songs really go on for forever. Great for putting on a record in the background but actively listening gets a bit tiring after a while
Eh. It was fine.
It was alright, i liked some of the guitar melodies though
It's alright, kinda slow for my taste
A lil bit flat for me. All Led, very little Zeppelin.
It was pretty good but I’ve never been a big zeppelin fan
I like this record a lot, but it suffers from poor pacing. It swings from fast tempo to slow tempo too often and that prevents it from sounding like a cohesive record. Communication Breakdown is an all-time favourite, though.
I mean I wanted to really love this album. I mean you can tell how talented these guys are but the songs definitely ran a little too long. I loved Good Times, Babe Im Gonna Leave You (My favorite), dazed and confused, and Your time is gonna come. Still liked it and it just might be one of those albums where I just have to listen to it again
I'm glad I have this a listen, but I just can't get into Led Zeppelin. They have everything I like - guitar solos, epicly long songs, interesting sounds, many genders blended together, including blues. Giving it 3 stars over 2 since I'm trying to be optimistic
When Zeppelin hits it, they really hit it. This album is a little early and for me, doesn't quite hit it.
Ill be honest, I enjoy some Led Zeppelin from time to time, and I enjoyed this album for what it is, however this being their first album makes it seem like they haven't fully found their footing yet, I mean this was 1969. I would say that following Led Zeppelin albums are better and feature better tracks, however I don't think this album was bad by any means, just a little bit more boring than their following albums. Overall I would probably give this album like a 3 outta 5, not bad, just not my favorite either.
It was alright. Not my typical style
Baby
An album of covers from artists who didn't want to be covered. It's almost a joke in the case of Dazed And Confused. This album contains a lot of "baby". Still... a legendary album we'll never be able to get rid of. Well interpreted and played, tho.
Some songs have so much energy and some are really beautiful. I really actually love this album. Also I read that J.R.R. Tolkien likes Led Zeppelin, so they get extra bonus points because I'm a nerd. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals or lyricism though.
Thought I'd like it better. The hits are fine, and I liked Communication Breakdown
