The New Tango

Really good ambient kind of spooky music. It sounds foreign even without words but it sounds very good and expertly mixed. If you had told me that this was a movie score I would have believed you. This is the La Croix of music, it doesn't hit you in your face, it creeps up on you.

Vibraphone

Astor Piazzolla is a key figure in the world of tango, borrowing from jazz and classical music to help bring the Argentine into the second half of the 20th century. Gary Burton is a vibraphonist who has a background in ECM jazz, notably innovating by adopting the four-mallet technique. Together, they play beautiful tango nuevo. It's dramatic, mysterious, lingering. The New Tango is a pick that feels as though it was meant to kill two birds with one stone (there are arguably better pics from Piazzolla's discography), but I can agree that this is an album worth praising. "Like being in an elevator for an hour." Buddy, you've been in some interesting elevators!

You gotta ask yourselves why the editors of the 1001 Albums list included this and not, say, "Tango: Zero Hour" from the previous year, which Astor Piazzolla himself said was his greatest work. With that assessment, "Tango: Zero Hour" seems to have the most cross-over appeal with audiences. That said, this recording with Gary Burton is genuinely delightful and embodies the spirit of Tango nuevo, which is a melancholic yet sensual blend of genres, traditions, and lineages. To incorporate the vibraphone is to show the genre's beauty and mystique. That's why it's always "tango de la muerte" and not "merengue de la muerte." The violin playing from Fernando Suárez Paz is genuinely hypnotic since it can go anywhere from screeching and tense to tranquil. Take the strings starting at 9:29 for album opener "Milonga Is Coming" which sound exactly like the siren of a firetruck blaring off in the distance. A-

When treated as a ‘sit down and listen’ experience, this is definitely too long. But its not intended as that, its a live album ffs. Everything here is crafted very well and never feels repetitive.

The marquee names on this album are a vibraphonist and a bandoneon player (which is apparently subtly different than an accordion) but the band is strong all around. The pianist is excellent too (adding some drama to the compositions) and the violinist has some great solos. The interplay between the two main performers is dynamic on “Vibraphonissimo”! The vibraphone in particular is very fun to listen to on that song. It sounds like the notes are bouncing around my headphones like a ping pong ball. The last two tracks, “Operation Tango” and “La Muerta Del Angel” get pretty frenetic and wild! Lovely album.

Beautiful cinematic noir jazz that makes you feel like you are transported to new settings. I really enjoyed this album, and an unfortunately poorly timed computer restart made me lose a few paragraphs of review here. I essentially wrote that this music reminded me vividly of when I was in music school; cold outside the auditorium but warm inside, dimly lit, half asleep, and relaxing while listening to stuff like this. Good hit of nostalgia.

Surprisingly I actually enjoyed this album. It was very "Hitchcock" soundtrack sounding. It is an album I would put on in the back ground if I needed some music

I didn't love the album, and I didn't dislike anything about it. However, I wanted to keep listening to every track just because I wanted to know where each song was going. It's an odd Jazz/Classical/Folk fusion album and a unique listening experience

This felt like a very unique sound to me. Listened to it for most of the day and didn't get bored of it. Was downright jaunty at times. I really liked it.

Learned about the Bandoneon reading about Astor. And Burton is a mean vibraphonist. Not entirely my cup of tea but the instrumentation was varied enough to keep my interest. Vibraphones and Bandoneon's are not what I think of when I think of tango music or even jazz, and that's kind of what makes this collaboration and album special.

Goddamn, this is REALLY fucking cool. Not at all what I was expecting. Insane mix of jazz and classical. I need to learn more about this. Lots of room to grow here. 4/5

Absolutely loved this album! It's rare to hear so much vibraphone let alone as a featured instrument. It's hard to imagine this is a live album as well. The clarity is outstanding and really feels intimate. Can't imagine seeing this in person; must have been a blast! The musicianship on this is top notch all around. An intriguing mix of vibraphone and Concertina/Bandoneon, incorporated into something that can at times remind me of Gershwin-style fusing of jazz and Classical, with a little gypsy jazz violin thrown in. It's a pretty impeccable live recording. Not something I would have ever thought to listen to. I'll be listening to this more. Favorite is Nuevo Tango.

Tango? Piazzolla? I had my doubts, then I saw Gary Burton and thought “this may be interesting “. It was very good. The tango rhythm was ok but the instrument mix and the musicianship saved the day. 4 stars

I think this was a really good album. Day 15. After reading the reviews I wasn't hopeful for this album. There are so many 1 star reviews, but, there were also some 4s and 5s, which I'm happy about. People were saying that this is an instrumentally-focused album, and that they didn't like that, but I'm currently halfway through the first song and I am quite enjoying the mysterious, slow vibe of "Milonga Is Coming". The generator is saying this record focuses on genres such as "World" and "Jazz". I have never heard of World Music, but I do enjoy Jazz quite a lot. Can't wait for the rest of this album. It's only seven tracks long, which is surprising, it's almost EP length! But the record's run time is 58 minutes. I was in for a pretty good musical hour, I would say. Being released in 2005, this is the most recent album I've listened to so far. I quite like this one.

The album grew on me as it went along. I think my favorite track would be the building intensity of "Operation Tango."

One of the more interesting albums I've heard. Sounds high class.

I had no idea who these people were. It made me research Astor Piazzolla and his studio stuff feels very cinematic and odd. I wouldn’t be surprised if Danny Elfman was inspired by him. While I don’t think the live aspect improves this there are a couple of tracks that I love. I can see this is a divisive record, but as a guy who loves listening to movie scores this was a treat. 4/5

Had no idea what to expect from this album but I really liked it. It was a lot darker and weird than what I was reading in the comments about it being elevator music. I'd listen to this again.

Liked it a lot through the first half but second half dragged on to me. Rating: 3.8

I wasn’t sure about this album when it started. Vibraphone, Bandoneon and violin? Not an instrument grouping that Imagine, one expect. The opening track seemed a little unfocused. But as the album progressed, it really sucked me in. There’s a complexity in the songs/arrangements that is really interesting. I’ll never be enthralled with the key instruments, but it works well in this setting. I’ll be listening to this again, and can see it potentially in my collection in the future. Solid 4/5

Funky sounds and calming, me gusta

so funnn, and the playing is so great, so fresh. The more you hear Piazzolla, the more your recognize his style, and it's super distinct and fun to follow

A very placid, sensitive beginning, warm, beautifully meditative, deep. The accordion is moving like a cat by night. Everything is tense and I loved the sombre character of this in the beginning. The concert‘s end is aiming to much towards an explosive crescendo which diminishes the total result a bit. Still: a very great performance that everyone that was attentive it should be happy about.

Accordion & vibraphone is mood

It took a few tries to get in the mood of this one, but it was worth it. Virtuous and full of substance.

I never would've given this a try otherwise, but it served as a great soundtrack to my tidying session on this dreary November day. I made sure to take the time to really listen to and focus on some songs and it was really enjoyable. I especially loved Vibraphonissimo and Operation Tango. Great stuff!

My standard for 'world' records has been 3 Stars. They're all pretty good, but I've got very little to compare them to. This is a 4 star record great jazz tunes, great implementation of instruments, and just a wonderful vision brought to life.

Lovely lovely and lovely - it’s mind blowing love musicianship - perfect, even - with a twist on tango and incredible arrangement of instrument - to make this a rousing climaxing record. Not always going to be in the mood for this but it’s excellent.

Today shows another artist I’ve not heard of before. Almost every live album I’ve had so far had really impressed me, so I’ve learnt to be optimistic. Apple Music says the genre is “raíces”. I have the slightest cure what that means. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Milonga Is Coming I never thought I’d find myself being so transfixed by a xylophone, but I’ve yet again find myself to be proven wrong. To me, this felt like something I might come across on Classic FM, so I guess raíces might mean singing like that. Oftentimes, I would forget that I was listening to a live album until the crowd started clapping and cheering after a song. Everything is played and recorded quite perfectly. I did did that no sounds quite beat the opening track in terms of how much I enjoyed it, but overall this was a very nice experience.

Well, they accomplished exactly what it says on the cover - tangos in the 80s New Age style, complete with a xylophone, so it sounds as if there was a fairy from Argentina in the Nutcracker. However, with the whole album being instrumental and in a consistent style, it does get repetitive at times.

So worth knowing, and there should be more room for the likes of tango (not to mention string quartets) in this esteemed list There is real artistry here and GB's vibing keep some litheness here, in a genre that can tend to the overly rigid and occasionally turgid. One can't speak so the virtuosity exactly here, having limited genre knowledge to be honest, but certainly one knows what one likes – and finds this most likable indeed One remembers fondly one's nuevo tango's phase and feels inspired to return to it (and not just for sentimental reasons) after giving this a few listens.

I wonder why this out of Astor Piazzolla's 2 million albums was picked? That's not too dispute his or the album's greatness, I wonder if there was an element that Astor needed to be picked, but being so prolific he had to be picked, after all he'd be in a list of 'Top 501 artists', but picking an album to include? Probably a lucky pick. Anyway, enjoy, download, then tell me in 5 years if the album stands out? He does for sure, but the album?

I think the lack of willingness to wrestle with this album on its own merits attests to something disturbing about the way we consume art. This is the first album sent to me by this program which does not fall into cliched song structures and 2-4 minute songs. It’s very texturally, harmonically, and structurally interesting. These tracks take me on a journey. I don’t listen to the first 30 seconds and think “okay so that’s basically it”. I’m a fan of classical music, so more free form gobbledygook bullshit nonsense strikes a chord with me. To me this is capital M “Music”, a genuine expression of artistic intent not derived solely from a capitalistic drive for profit. This album was not made to satisfy a quota or buy a yacht. It is genuine art that attempts something unique that is worth at least contending with. It is imbued with history - or, more accurately, historicity - and progression, evading the typical static limbo which plagued conventional pop. Also I shit on my own balls and now I’m pissed off. Fuck McDonald’s. It’s like communion, except instead of turning into the blood and body of Christ inside you, it transmogrifies into sludge diarrhea.

Great stuff - would listen again, love the sporadic accordian and reworked tango vibes.

This was very enjoyable. Soft around the edges, the vibraphone is such a mellow but precise instrument in this arrangement. I did a quick look up to determine the instrumentation included here — sparse — piano, violin, bass, piano, guitar, vibraphone, and bandoneon, which is like an accordion (had to look that one up). And, as I suspected, these guys only had three rehearsals before performing this. That's amazing. The intricacies and tightness of the players is incredible, I was marveling at the precision throughout.

It took a year and a half from when I got this album until I finally listened all the way trough. Today was the day, rainy and relaxing, cold, and feels like we skipped straight from Summer to Winter. This album was perfect for this day, very cool and relaxing but also very interesting. This is a genre I do not regularly listen to, so it was very nice to hear the different instruments working so well together, for example a part where the piano and I think a vibraphone complimented each other so well. Enjoyed this album very much, it was worth the wait but also there is a reason it took 1.5 years for me to listen to it, it isn't my everyday listen.

A live album that you'd never know was live if not for the occasional round of applause, the sound is so sharp and the instruments are played perfectly. Very unique music and unconventional instruments used but it was a pleasant listen. It all sort of blends together, one song doesn't particularly stand out, but that's not a point against it as the album as a whole was nice to have on as I worked. I'd listen to this again or play it during a fancy dinner party.

Pretty interesting and unique. I enjoy the marriage of accordion and vibraphone on this album, along with supplementary strings in certain tracks. Fun listen, both artists are extremely talented and it's nice to hear them come together in such harmony. The risk that Astor Piazzolla took to create Tango music with atypical instruments paid off. You can't really go wrong when you bring together the bandoneon and the vibraphone for some tango music. It was sometimes a little too "new" for me, making me think that I haven't had the opportunity to listen to enough traditional tango music first, but I definitely appreciate this musical exploration.

I am not familiar enough with the tango to know what is "new" or not or "tango" or not about the tracks on this album. Lots of energy, that's for sure!!

It takes two to tango. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm *fully* receptive to this album, as brilliant as the performers are on this one. Maybe there are other records released by Piazzolla that deserve to be on this list. After all, the man once released *Libertango* (whose title track was later made famous by Grace Jones). So I think that exploring that artist's discography would be wise before deciding only a late-career live album should be the one quoted by us. In the meantime, four points for the performance in this (the global score is way too low given the obvious virtuosity and artistry that is actually displayed in *The New Tango*). But this record won't be in my own list (a rare exception for a four-star record). My philosophy is that barring one or two very specific LPs, live albums should be set apart from the rest anyway. 1001 sounds like a huge number, but it's actually very small if you want to include all the essential "studio ones" out there... Number of albums left to review: 628 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 183 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 85 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 111 (including this one)

Very chill, very nice, very rarely hear some audience noises after like 10 minutes of music, so all in all a good album.

I didn't know what to expect of this one at all. But whacking on my Beats™ and pulling out my Dyson™ vacuum cleaner I went to do an hour or so of house cleaning as I listened. This performance was wonderful to listen to and the frantic and fast paced nature perfectly matched my chores to make it a much more enjoyable experience. Thanks Astor

Never listened to anything like this before. I found it quite a dramatic listen, got me working at a much quicker rate! Would definitely listen again. I'm glad that I've had a decent variety of albums over the past couple of weeks.

Yesterday I knew exactly one thing about Tango: that it takes two. Today I know two things: that it takes two and that the form was revolutionized by one Astor Piazzola, an Argentine bandoneon (no idea what that is) player in the 1980s. So I now know enough things about tango to have what I know about tango tango. Which is cool. Not sure what exactly makes this piece, recorded live together with American vibraphonist Gary Burton, especially special. But, what the hell. There’s good music in here. Maybe I’ll even listen to it again. I certainly won’t be caught dead listening to that old tango! Can you imagine? Not sure what to rate this, but, alas, I must. The 2.88 average it currently sits at seems unfairly low. So I’ll give it a little 4/5 boost. Thanks for all you’ve done for tango Mr. Piazzola. We salute you. 🌹

God god this is beautiful. It makes me want to fall in love and be alive in spring. To be totally fair, I didn’t listen to the whole album. But you know what they say about album reviews: better done than good! ✅

Love a tango & love Piazzolla. Also keen on the vibes (since I first heard Lionel Hampton)& on Gary Burton, ever since I found the vinyl of his 1973 album, Norwegian Wood. The tunes are all composed by Piazzolla, but the jazz treatment that Burton & the combo offer cannot be denied. All six cuts are standouts for me, but particularly Little Italy 1930, a beautiful autobiographical piece. Such a unique sound from 2 great artists.

"The New Tango" is a collboration between Argentinian Tango leader, composer, arranger and bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla and American jazz vibraphonist, composer and educator Gary Burton. The album is a concert recorded at the 1986 Montreux Festival. That must have been quite a festival. The music are pieces written by Piazzolla over his 40-year career and the concert billed as a suite for Vibraphone and New Tango Quintet. The album are seven music pieces being led by the vibraphone, bandoneón and violin (Fernando Suarez Paz). "Milango is Coming" begins the album and is more classical music with the violin. Eventually the vibraphone and bandoneón come in and the music sounds more like a tango. That happens quite frequency during these songs. "Vibraphonissimo" picks up the pace. It was specially written for Gary Burton and the vibraphone is front and center. The violin gives "Nuevo Tango" a very dramatic feel. All instruments come in and we clearly have a Tango melody. Big sounds abound in "Operation Tango." A violin break and solo. The most traditional tango-sounding song on the album. There is no doubt to the excellence of these players and music. The music changed pace and frequently the lead instruments. Never a dull moment. The audience was extremely appreciative (or least the recording of them) with a thunderous applause after each song. I enjoyed this album quite a bit.

Ooh. Delightful. I don't have the musical vocab to say anything interesting about a classical tango album but this is very, very nice. I have one other touchstone in this ouvre I guess which was the soundtrack to Waking Life by Tosca Tango Orchestra, which was also slightly offbeat in places but more generally unsettling than this. This is lovely. I particularly love the longer tracks as they wend and wain.

Pretty down with this, though it had a bit of that issue I get with modern jazz, where it sometimes seems to just run into a bunch of scales noodling up and down and I don’t know if it’s really an Emperor’s New Clothes situation or if I’m just too dumb and unsophisticated to get it. Also kept making me think about music in those Professor Layton DS games (not a bad thing!) though that obviously gets the direction of influence backwards.

An unique experience

I'm not really a fan of tango, but I did enjoyed this blend of classical music and tango very much. The breadth of variety, coupled with depth of feeling and intensity made for an exciting spin. The second track, which was mostly xylophone was almost a pain to listen to - but the rest was good enough to still warrant a good rating.

Great musicianship all around. That Gary Burton on the vibraphone is a beast. I actually know nothing about tango except more typical dance stuff so I was not aware that tango was this intense at times, almost like a video game's battle music. Not bad at all.

Very different, very entertaining. Liked the vibraphone piece "Vibraphonissimo" especially. The different time signatures and styles wove in and out through each of the pieces. It was quite refreshing, and a very different type of album than I normally listen to. Really enjoyed it.

Well, what can one say about nuevo tango (or any tango) – you either dig it or you don't. This is intense, both in the driving passages and the melanchoic suspensions (where it sounds like the composer is questioning himself). GB adds a swing and ligthness to a form that can get somber and rigid. One hasn't the authority to say whether this should be included or excluded to other milestones of the genre (or sub-genre), but surely there must be room for more. The setting at Montreux would seem to add to both the intensity (of which neuvo tango had plenty) and the occassion. "Laura's Dream" is a highlight.

This one was a pleasant surprise. Tango is super nice to work to, and I really love the vibraphone so that helped!! Loved the classical influence as well.

Beautiful compositions! In my mind this is the soundtrack for a chill soulsborne game where you don't fight giant scary monsters with gaping mouths of death, but where you might sit and have a cup of tea, and just enjoy the day around you, but the lighting is the same :)) 5? Or a Witcher game placed in Argentina where you have to outdance your opponent in a tango to the death, the violin and the bandonéon makes for a beautiful top and the piano puts a dark foundation to the mix. A solid 4

Gorgeous. Cinematic. Knew Piazzolla from his guitar works, but was expecting to enjoy this. Biased towards live recordings as well, but still a great record. Vibraphone haters stay away.

Never would have listened to this if it wasn’t on the list. Sometimes it’s really nice to listen to some great musicians like this even if it is way out of my usual style.

It's hard to believe people could dance to this, but I saw a New Tango show in Buenos Aires a couple of decades ago, and the dancing was as adventurous as the playing.

Interesting album. Started off well and cinematic but as it continued I started to lose interest. Apparently there are better albums by this artist so this is an interesting choice for the book. I think high 3… slightly above average but not for me. 3.4/5

This is pleasant but lacks the vibrancy I expect from tango music.

Funny that this is Piazzolla and Burton (together), as they're both, I think, musicians who I've always wanted to, or at least kind of thought I should, like more than I do. Burton is someone I was aware of growing up (from Mombo, of course), playing with Chick Corea (and, I think, Keith Jarrett, too), among others. Piazzolla was trendy in the U.S. starting around the late 80s or 90s. It's not like I hate their music - not at all; just that I don't love it. Their music is not particularly interesting or compelling to me, and just doesn't inspire me to want to listen to it. Again, it's not terrible, and it's interesting to hear them together. But, unfortunately, I can't say that this is one where 1 + 1 is great than 2: it's just 2, meaning I feel about the 2 of them together about the same as I feel about each of them individually: it's ok, and somewhat interesting, but I just don't love it. But I can definitely give this 3 stars, so that's what I'll do.

So I'm simply not educated enough on the history of this style and genre to fairly grade this, let me say that off the top. But for me, time and place are super important for the listening experience for any particular album, and in a car waiting in traffic is not time time or place for me to properly enjoy this. I do not have the life experiences attached to these melodies and rhythms. This rating reflects this lack of knowledge and experience.

I like Astor Piazzolla - was buying his stuff waaaaay back to understand him more - he is legend in S America - but this is not a reflection of his best work

This is like drinking an espresso after a 2-hour meal in the heart of Rome. Its’s light and airy without any worry about the past or future and also full of energy and large gestures. Devine.

I feel like I don't have the technical understanding to properly judge this album. Based on pure experience - it works ok as background - sometimes. And some songs have interesting parts but you are dealing with two very unique instruments - the concertina and vibes. Both push music into a very particular space sonically and ultimately limits my appreciation because I am thinking more about the instruments themselves than what is actually going on. I guess my is - what is the right way to listen to this. Your don't dance to it. It has too many frantic swells to eat dinner to it. It has too many long passages to consistently engage. Intellectually it is impressive - you can hear the musicality. So maybe the best place to hear this is/was at the Casino de Montreux in July 1986. Music in its pure form - fleeting, ephemeral - never to be created in quite the same way again. Engaged in the moment will only last in memory - except there a recording. And what do I do with that exactly?

Surprisingly fun! Not something I would seek out on my own but not mad to have listened to it.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it either. Mostly it just sounded like music made for people who are a whole lot better at dancing than I am. I could tell there was skill and style all over it, but as just a listening experience it didn't do much beyond making me picture some very serious dancing I am absolutely not qualified to attempt.

You could have told me it was the old tango and I'd have not known any better. A revolutionary in a field you know nothing about just sounds like every one else. Not a bad album but if there was something amazing about it I don't know what it was.

I appreciate familiarizing myself with things that are completely off my normal radar and there's clearly great talent involved with this. It just didn't really grab me on first listen beyond being pleasant background music.

Parts of this felt like a panic attack though that might have been the prolonged influence of Aleksander. I liked this more when focusing on the individual components but struggled to let it wash over me as a whole.

Great background music, slightly sinister, which I kinda like! Hated the tease of Vibraphonissimo like please just let the song climax and be over.

I don’t know if this is good. I don’t know if I’m meant to. It certainly sounds impressive. I don’t really know the context of it or who made it or why but I had a lovely time listening to those instruments.

This was a fine listen for what it is. I have to believe if I was going to seek something like this out, it’s above average.

Certainly unique and interesting, and the musicianship is obviously there. So all these points are for that. Definitely can’t see myself revisiting this one.

Wel leuk om te horen dat tango niet altijd alleen maar dansbaar hoeft te zijn. Het gaat hier alleen om de muziek. Ik hoor wel dat het best goed is maar het is niet mijn favoriete soort muziek.

Ik vond het wel leuk om te luisteren, ik vond het wel charmant klinken en het deed me soms denken aan oude tekenfilms.

This album is like stepping into a movie, intense and captivating! Piazzolla's bandoneon and Burton's vibraphone blend so coolly, it's both classic and super modern. Some parts are seriously beautiful and emotional, but it's definitely not for everyone. It takes some focus and can be a bit much if you're not in the mood. It's amazing, but not your typical easy listening.

I enjoyed this, and in the first track when the violin came in I thought, "yeah, I'm gonna love this," but it didn't quite build excitement from there like I thought. So I stayed in enjoyment range. Might be very good background music to a dinner party. I'm glad I heard it, so I don't really begrudge its inclusion in a very very long list, but I don't think I'd include it myself. 3/5.

Hot take, calling anything on the jazz end of the spectrum “elevator music” is a lazy cop out. Personally, this wasn’t entirely my cup of tea but a lot I found interesting about it. Might not listen to again but enjoyable listen.

This album was better than I was anticipating. It was pretty interesting. Some of the tracks evoked mysterious vibes, some sounded romantic.

Easy listening

I quite liked it in a background music kind of way, but if I'm ever on Strictly Come Dancing, I still want to do my tango to A View To a Kill by Duran Duran.

This was interesting but that is the box where it stayed. I don't think I would reach for this again. It didn't feel revolutionary to me or even exciting. Not sure what could have changed this. The use of the different instruments (live) was entertaining, it is refreshing to hear a different spin on classical music. Favorite tracks: Laura's Dream Little Italy

1001 Albums Generator 264 (4/7/2026) Astor Piazzolla was a highly respected Argentinian composer/musician, with many albums that are very highly regarded, including one that I have been wanting to listen to for a while, but isn't on Spotify (Persecuta btw). With all that said, it's strange that the one album of his that we get on this list is a pretty middling live recording that is not considered his best or anywhere near it. Now, middling does not mean "bad". This is a very hypnotic and beautiful recording with an incredible instrumental palette of primarily accordion, vibraphone, violin, and upright bass, but it is kind of all form and no substance. The swag is here, but I found it hard to really focus on or fully get into any of the songs themselves. Little Italy has a very nice vibe that really does feel like the title. Additionally, the little bit of drums we get on songs like Laura's Dream add a lot. It's just a lot for almost an hour of very little changes in sound/dynamics/etc. Probably a light 3/5. Favs: Milonga Is Coming Little Italy Laura's Dream Least Fav: Vibraphonissimo

Reminds me of waking life soundtrack

Hey this is fine. If you were really into jazz I can see this being a great album. It blends two genres you wouldn't immediately put in the same room, and it's seamless. There is some real virtuosity on display, and also some elements of contemporary classical music. Not my bag, but I respect it. Vibraphone is cool as hell. THREE STARS

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is pretty different from everything else on this list. This is instrumental tango music. It's very upbeat and a perfectly fine listen and I am happy to have heard it once, but I doubt I would come back to this one.

Can't say no to a cheeky bit of tango

I wasn't too sure about this album when it first started the first two songs quite honestly "Milonga Is Coming" was a bit long and snoozy for me. Not necessarily bad but also not my type of buzz. But starting with "Little Italy 1930" it started getting I with it. The Title track and "La Muerta del Angel" were a bit fire... Especially the closer. Overall I can't say I really got into it totally and I think it's one that if I understood the music a bit more that I would probably get into but there's a lot of lack of context for me on this type of music but I did like the energy "New Tango" and "Muerta del Angel" (6.8) ★★★

The vibraphone grates on me, the rest is cool. 3.5 stars

Vibes are right

I feel like I shoild be in a fancy smoking jacket, silk trousers and soft comfy slippers for this album. Sitting on a chesterfield armchair sipping expensive brandy. Instead I am in my cheap jocks and a vest top sipping water under the air con on a 40c day. Not my usual thing but enjoyable enough. Sounded like the score from Twelve Monkeys in the latter half. Ha.

Enjoyed this a lot. Tango is not my typical genre but this was great.

This is a fine samba-infused jazz album, but I'm failing to hear what makes it so remarkable. It's just alright.

*the link took me to a different album by default, so watch for that. I'm somewhat familiar with Piazzolla's work but it was good to listen to this record right through. An area where I'm fairly ignorant to be honest. Suspect hearing this live would have been much more exciting. Argument for tango being a form of jazz? It certainly feels like it shares some similarities of approach and improvisation in this context. The big-name headliner being just one piece of the musical jigsaw.

I’ll give this a respectful golf clap for the technical wizardry behind the vibraphone performance. At times kinda interesting Danny Elfmann-esque compositions, at others the kind of goofy stock music I used to lay underneath “funny” scenes in Vice docs.

I have never heard of Astor Piazzolla or Gary Burton before, but the album title and a brief look at the album's page on this site make it clear what type of music this will be. • Milonga is Coming sounds cinematic. The instrumentation is already unlike any other album I've gotten here, with violin and vibraphone being front and centre, and I love it. • Vibraphonissimo has a really cool feel. I love how it becomes a solo piece after the first 30 seconds, before the rest of the band comes in after another two minutes • Nuevo Tango is a cool song • There is a part in La Muerta Del Angel, at about 3:07, that sounds almost identical to a Mario song and I cannot figure out which one (EDIT: It was the Viridian Forest theme from Pokémon, not Mario). My attention did start to wane during the second half of the album (probably not helped by this being the third album I've heard today) but it was a good listen. Like most instrumental jazz albums, I think it makes for better background listening than something you actually pay attention to, but it does fill its niche well. There were a lot of unique sounds throughout the album, both through instrumentation choices and also how those instruments are used, and that served to bring my attention back to the album at points. Favourite track: Vibraphonissimo

There is a category of albums where once you hear one of the tracks on them, you've heard all of them. This album(which doesn't even have a Wikipedia page by the way) falls into this category. It's a unique collaboration, and the audience is so quiet, one would think it's a golf match instead of a live concert, but behold, a live album. Favorite Track: "Milonga Is Coming".

Gary Burton is an absolute virtuoso but I can't see myself going out of my way to listen to this again.

Favorittfilmen min er Happy Together, så jeg vet egentlig at jeg liker tango. Nå måtte jeg søke opp hvem det egentlig er som spiller på det soundtracket, og visst faen er det Astor Piazzolla. Dog vet jeg ikke om dette er skiva som selger Piazzola som en slags tango-gudfar? Slår ofte over i jazz og minimalisme, som i og for seg er kult, men det går på bekostning av de moody lydlandskapene jeg kjenner ham for. Synes det var tungt å komme seg gjennom en time av dette til tross for at jeg likte det.

I feel like I have a pretty decent deal of appreciation for this album since I was in band for so many years. Albums like these almost make me have to go into the "band kid" state to get through them. That being said, while I think this was beautiful, listening to this album became a bit of a slog after a certain point. Hearing this live would be another situation entirely, but through my headphones while I'm sitting at my computer is just not really the vibe. It grew to be a bit boring, but I'm not going to rate it poorly for that reason alone. Like I said, it really is beautiful and clearly took talent and creativity to create. I didn't completely dislike it. There were certainly aspects I enjoyed, but I wouldn't likely return to it again either.

223/1089 so far in this project, the jazzy albums have being okay to decent but none have fully grabbed me. This one, however, it pretty fun and relaxing so far certainly strings in Operation Tango are admittedly kinda unnerving to me Nuevo Tango was kinda giving Ratatouille if it were a JRPG it had its ups and downs, some parts put me on edge a bit too much just in the way strings are played sometimes but otherwise this was a good time faves: Nuevo Tango, La Muerta del Angel, Laura’s Dream, Milonga is Coming 62/100

Nice vibes (haha, get it). Fantastic musicianship, lovely music, don't know how much I'll return to this, but this was a good listen out of my usual wheelhouse.

I kept forgetting it was a live album until the audience applause would jump-scare me. Not a genre I'd listen to on my own but I'd be a dirty liar if I said I wasn't bouncing around and vibing hard to it.

I only wish I knew enough about music to appreciate this. I don't like it, but I don't think it is bad. So for enjoyment, this would get a 2 from me. But it is soooo much better than the Madonna crap I just suffered through that I'm giving this a 3. (Not really. I'm not raring on comparison).

Gotta say, I wasn't expecting much based on the album cover of two men passionately playing an accordion and xylophone. But I guess this is one of those "don't judge a book by its cover" sort of moments -- at least based on 2 songs in. Milonga Is Coming is a long-winded patient opener that is in constant motion. Vibraphonissimo is straight dope. The bell work is fantastic and well supported by the piano/harpsichord. Some tastefully moody shit. Of the rest, Laura's Dream is really pretty and there are some cool sounds on the last two tracks. I kind of lost focus throughout, but this was some unexpectedly solid listening. High 3 for me.

This was fun, not sure why this album was chosen in particular but one thing I've learned is that we can't get in the mind of the guy that made this book

Interesting style mix and instruments and while at this moment it wasn’t my cup of tea, I can visualize the 1950’s swinging bachelor bringing someone back to their pad, putting this on the hi/fi and showing off the etchings. Not traditional tango, but something different

Listenable, and if I picture some games as video game sound tracks, it really slaps. As a live performance it was also quite impressive, but listening to it in my apartment with no context had me frequently looking at how much time was left in the album

This isn’t something I would have sought out myself, but it was a worthwhile listen. It was engaging, even if it’s not something I would go back to regularly.

I want to like this more and I can definitely appreciate the beauty of it. Each piece is dense and languid as it constantly morphs and explores new ideas. The xylophone often feels like backbone of the performance, but it does a decent job at it. To me, this style of music just lacks the essence that makes jazz and classical music stick out.

Very interesting fusion of jazz and tango. It incorporates moments of very bright and uplifting orchestration, as expected from tango, and very delicate and quiet moments with only piano or vibraphone, which somehow reminded me a lot to 'In a Silent Way' by Miles Davis. Sometimes, it even imitates the mystic atmosphere of the trumpeter's record, but not as captivating. I did lean more towards the tango sound of it, more than the calm jazzy one, as it tended to feel quite dragging and long, but still enjoyable. In addition, I have to add that the recording and producing of this record is wonderful, specially considering it is a live album. Everything sounds incredibly clean. However, I don't really see myself coming back to this project. It surely is an interesting mix and works quite well, but I wasn't impressed enough to want to return to it.
