Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Jazz x tango?? Not sure how to describe this. All inatrumental, sounds interesting enough. Nice if you like this kind of thing, but doesn't wow me personally. I can appreciate the musicality and skill though. Best track - Vibraphonissimo, Operation Tango 3 stars

I really don’t know what to say on this one. I mean, it’s fine? I know nothing about this kind of music but it was acceptable background music while I worked, so that’s a star. Nobody was screaming lyrics at me, so that’s another star. It’s a live album and the audience seemed genuinely pleased with the performance, so another star. There you go…3 stars.

By the end of the first track I had already been transported to a small, dark cafe in Europe that was alive with foot traffic. The instrumental songs just barely audible above the din of the intensifying conversations around me. A full orchestra is on display with this album and each plucked string, drum struck, or blown horn is done so with intention. This could very easily be the soundtrack for a Cirque Du Soleil show as we experienced many of the same qualities we had a couple of days ago with The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady album by Charles Mingus. I was never blown away by any of these tracks, but it was a soothing experience that differs from the average albums we have been exposed to.

A pleasing record but a lot of it sort of wafted over me. I wasn’t too drawn in until I got to the exquisite melodic percussion on “Little Italy.”

The first track was excellent. Exquisite even. Everything I look for in a warm jazz track. I had never heard of Astor Piazzolla before but I feel like I should have. As a "genre definer" he is an artist I should probably look more into. I'm familiar with Gary Burton and was given just what I expected there. I felt as if this album delivered to me what it was intending to deliver, but I've never enjoyed Tango music. Another fine example of an album that would be much better if taken in live or on the dance floor.... So, once again, first from my car then from my office chair I'm leaving this album with a 3.5 rounded down.

One for the connoisseurs. By that I mean, I recognise the virtuosity of those involved, I know little about the genre, I hear little more than random noodlings, I felt zero emotion over the music, and I'm in no rush to listen to it again.

Very off the beaten trail for me but a good head nod.

Tää oli ihan raikasta menoa! 3/5

That's a good soundtrack for a 50's movie, but as an album itself... nah so much.

I feel like I am in a 1920s silent Italian move and this was the soundtrack. Good album if not my thing.

Otro toque latino a la lista. Me gusta para variar. Jazz-tango??

This is cool shit and makes me want to check out more - dude lived quite a life per wikipedia and it seems like this was a cool work, but he wasn't usually working with a vibraphonist. Will definitely check out some of his tango cancion or other of his stuff. Bandoleon! Not even an accordion? That'll be the next wikipedia rabbit hole.

Solid tango music, solid nice background stuff for me. I'm sure other fans and experts of latin music can say a lot more. To me, it was just nice, but nothing groundbreaking.

Too arty for me. More like modern classical than what I would think of as tango. Do people dance to this? Do you have to be able to dance to a tango?

Musically impressive. Dynamic, energetic, unique. Jazzy. Sometimes really intense, particularly the tracks more heavy on what I belive is a vibraphone. All that said, i was a bit bored at times. Perhaps a full album is a bit much for me. Although, im sure watching it live would have been another story and quite spectacular. 7/10

Interesting, and different.

milonga is coming- 5 vibraphonissimo- 6 or 7 little italy- 5 nuevo tango- 5 or 6 Laura's dream- 5 or 6 operation tango- 5 la muerta del angel- 5 or 6 my cat chewed through my headphones 😭

Surprisingly quirky and felt like a soundtrack

Album review 007 The New Tango (recorded live at the Montreux Festival) by Astor Piazzolla & Gary Burton (1987) Rating 3.5/5 So, it’s not often that I can say that I spent an hour listening to a live recording of a virtuoso bandoneonist playing nuevo tango with a renowned vibraphonist. Quite enjoyed it. (Interestingly, a quick read of the review on AllMusic mentions how the pair only had three rehearsals together before playing this set. I didn’t expect that at all, sounds like they’ve been playing together for years and their styles/instruments/playing combine really well).

Solid elevator music.

At first I was like, "what the fuck is this? Hahaha". As a fan of the golden age of film I didn't mid the tunes.

pling plong pling pling pling plong (continue for one hour) I didn't hate it but it got samey real fast.

Would have been higher but the heavy xylophone took me out of it.

Not my wheelhouse. Don’t know how to rate the xylophone playing, etc. Easy enough to listen to. Have listened through a few times and will surely play this again.

Good to give it a go and crikey how they even play the vibraphone like that is a mystery. But really have to lock in to enjoy it otherwise it just passes by

Muy buen álbum de ambiente

For what it is, I thought it was OK, relaxing jazz-sounding music. However, I don't know enough about the genre to understand why it was so revolutionary.. I read the description included on this page and it still didn't give enough context, I think.

Some flashes of interest (the vibraphone especially), but mostly the was just background noise. 2.5 rounded up because at least it isn't another boring British 80s album.

Kind of a sound effects album.

3.2/i guess that was something amazing? eh

Eduardo: You are now carrying my child. Lisabella: But how? Eduardo: It is the mystery of the dance.

Lovely

Sounds pretty fun to be at

Hooray for Harold Lloyd!

Interesting and enjoyable, at times very theatrical music. Occasionally diverged into the too quirky and chaotic for my tastes, but I really enjoyed some of the more beautiful piano+violin sections.

I discovered Piazolla many years ago through Gotan Project, a band I really like. I enjoy most of the music. Maybe it's my current mood, but at the moment it's a little too Argentinean for me to really appreciate it. 3/5

Interesting

Astor Piazolla the virtuoso of bandoneon kind of invented the ''Nuevo Tango'' and gave tango a breath of fresh air with jazz and classical elements. He influenced and created this sub genre if you like, causing the spring of new artists like Bajofondo and Gotan Project. This is a live album and it is recorded in Montreaux Festival, probably referring to the jazz one that is very famous around the world. The tracks are like something you could hear in movies, melodramatic ones or in a 50's coctail party.I have to say though that i don't like at all bandoneon, accordion or Tango in general and also violins that sound bit gypsy to me,so this was challenging for me. Vibraphonissimo has interesting textures, but it has too much vibraphone for me,it sounds like something you could hear though in a film noir mystery movie, Nuevo Tango has tension that kept my interest throughout, Laura's Dream is an amazing intricate composition as well, Operation Tango's tensions gets me a longing feeling to hear what's next to come all the time, very good, interesting background playing and changes of keys, tempos, the piano gets more obvious towards the end and that makes it epic. At times the vibraphone gets too loud in an annoying scale but then i remember that it's a live recording. Also there are certain resemblances to french accordion music that bores me to death.Despite all that i must aknowledge the virtuosity of all elements here and the discipline. Most of the times you forget this is a live recording that's why i will give it a 3/5.

> the Beatles Interesting

Tango, jazz, classical. Not my genres normally but I gave it a whirl and found myself enjoying these varied and creative compositions. The opening track felt romantic and whimsical with transitions in to more mysteries and menacing moments. Very cinematic. Musical storytelling. It's going to be a challenging listen for most (me included). When the audience began clapping I was reminded this was performed live and took my appreciation to another level. Criticisms? Some of the songs go on too long for me. I would have appreciated something a little shorter, especially since I'm not accustomed to this type of music.

Fine, but forgettable

Pretty pleasant stuff. Simpsons: No

Interesting album.

I really enjoyed that. I'll be listening to it again. Oddly my girlfriend thought it was weird and spooky. Sometimes she just does not have good taste in music.

The global reviews are far too harsh on these guys. The performers are extraordinarily talented, and have to be my all time favourite accordion/xylophone act. Joking aside, I really did enjoy this music. Not everything has to leave an indelible mark on the listener. Sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the simple pleasure of a man striking a bit of wood with a tiny mallet. ✨

Chaotic while finding control. Expert musicians who find any void in the music and interject their spice. Truly engaging music that kinda stresses me out. It’s very close to being a video game soundtrack. I would give the talent a 5, but the music overall falls to just an appreciation level and not an active enjoyment. Good stuff overall.

The further I got through this the more I liked it. Perhaps as an instrumental it's considered boring, but I don't think this fall under music for the sake of music. Really well written parts, especially the violin. Was nice while studying.

I’m not ready to experience this work yet, but one day I will.

Sjovt!

Loved the strings in this record. Favourite Track(s): Little Italy, Operation Tango Least Favourite Track(s): Vibraphonissimo

It's ok. A bit samey at times.

Nice chill vibe. Very enjoyable.

After I got over the blood-pressure rush of "Against my will, it is now time to listen to an hour of instrumental jazz tango pieces" (the feelings subsided over the course of 30 minutes) I got to thinking the music was especially full and lush, and for something to have on in the background as a more passive soundtracking of life, this album is a pretty luscious and rich option It's not quite a 4, but it is a fond 3

Enjoyable but due to being instrumental it was hard to actively connect to

It’s sophisticated Tango run through a classical filter. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - Milonga Is Coming - Vibraphonissimo - Nuevo Tango

Playing around with classical tango sounds, tossing in some vibraphone just to be cheeky, and towing the line between classical and avant garde perfectly.

very pleasant but I that's all I've got

Really good tango music, jazz touches.

Different style of instrumental music - apparently one pioneered by Piazzolla, the "new tango." I wasn't wowed but I liked it alright. Nice to get an instrumental album that isn't another jazz piano selection.

i do not have the patience or music know-how to fully appreciate this, but i have nothing against it. just not that exciting to me. very nice sounding, like background eating music.

That second one started and I thought an ad had started on my Spotify, it was just great mobile ad music

I feel like I wanted to like this because it was something different but it kind of dragged on. I remember thinking, “wow, I wonder what song I am on” and then I checked and I was still on the first one.

Unusual progressive jazz, I'd call it. Really interesting instrumentation - vibes, accordion, scratchy percussive violin that fill out a Classical atmosphere, for lack of a better phrase.

Bandoneon and Vibraphone... Name a more iconic duo.

Enjoyed this!

nice listen

A letdown compared to the previous album I reviewed. There seem to be a few albums on this list without Wikipedia pages. I liked the last few tracks. The first ones are boring. Another album for the list. 3 stars for "The New Tango".

Nothing wrong with this, but it didn't grab me.

Interesting.

It definitely wasn't bad but it is so far outside what I normally listen to that it is hard to say I enjoyed it. Orchestral pieces that were often too bombastic to become background music. I definitely won't be following up on this.

Jazz casually match with my music taste, then this album was such a pleasure to listen.

Not exactly the most mind blowing thing I've ever heard, but still just a good enough album that's easy to listen to in the background.

Okay maybe I like jazz if it’s not horns?

As with many albums on here, I can see the appeal, but doesn't really do it for me. It's fine background music.

Interesting sound I really wasn't familiar with before. Everybody performs with a virtuosity that is very enjoyable to listen to. Can see myself listening to this in the future again.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I think I wanted more actual accordian.

As someone who gets hyped to hear jazz albums on this list I have not heard before, this was a bit of a let down. There are some great tracks to enjoy, but there are just too many mediocre ones to rate this any higher than a 3.

I fell asleep twice while listening to this. It was good but not very dramatic.

Although accordions (sorry, bandoneons) and vibraphones aren't really to my taste, and I know nothing of Astor Piazzolla and his controversies, I appreciate the variety represented by this album in this collection, and also for what appears to be a very well-recorded live performance at the 1986 Montreaux Jazz Festival. I felt a little adrift without a Wikipedia entry for the album at all (and the 1001albumsgenerator link to YouTube Music was *not* to the right album), and the "1001 Albums" entry had little context as well, so I just floated along in the very *un*-tango-esque sea of Burton's vibraphones and Piazzolla's concertino virtuosity. It was a bit hard at times to avoid feeling like I was in some casino in the 60s with this mellow lounge music playing, and at other times in some Godard mystery/thriller film, but there are far worse ways to spend an hour. (And fun to hear Gary Burton go wild on "Vibraphonissimo".)

Entertaining and well performed. Mostly forgettable if you're not a tango fan, though.

Didn't hate it. Didn't love it. Very jazz. Occasionally I enjoyed a little passage of music. Mostly out felt like an extended jam session and directionless. At one point I thought I'd accidentally turned the kettle on but it was just an unusual instrument being introduced on the second song.

Some wonderful instrumentation with standout Cello moments throughout. Nothing blew me away, but I did feel enriched by the listening experience on this one.

Thoughts before listening: Never heard of these musicians. Seems like some Latin jazz and appears to be a live recording. I don't have any other frame of reference here. Review: So this is not something I would typically listen to, but its a really cool sound. Apparently Astor Piazzolla is considered the premiere tango composer and musician of his time, and while thats not something that would tend to catch my attention, I'm glad that this project gave me a reason to listen to his work. I don't really know what traditional tango music sounds like, but to me this set leans heavily on jazz and classical elements. Perhaps that is largely thanks to this being a live set from a jazz festival. My favorite songs on here are the up tempo, faster paced (and shorter duration) songs "Vibraphonissimo" and "La Muerta del Angel" both of which are going on my playlist. 3-stars

Not usually what I’m looking for in a musical experience, but this was unique and moody - in a good way.

Soundtracked my existential crisis on my commute to work well

It was a fun album, something I never would have ever even known about. However the super long tracks at the end seemed to go on forever

Ayy at least it introduced me to Tango and had me consider it a bit more. That's a good listening experience in my book.

Maybe it's b/c I've gotten a lot of live jazz albums recently, but I'm starting to get real sick of it

2.6 - Look, it's just a little bit irritating, not that it's actually bad

Beautiful background music. 3.5 stars

Enjoyable music. Must be great to dance to.

I was quite excited to listen to this. I wasn't aware of the artist, per se, but a quick read of the wikipedia page and it seemed to be the sort of album I would enjoy. Whilst it wasn't in any way bad, it wasn't as good as I hoped. A few of the longer tracks just seemed to lose energy. Not one track really stood out.

pretty interesting compositions and objectively amazing playing it just didn’t grasp me as much as i’d like

interesting. I have high respect for "world Music". Not use to listen to it but I'll give this a listen. a live album? interesting. A little slow for my taste

Pfoeeee... Sorry! FAVO: Vibraphonissimo, Operation Tango

You know, I’m not sure if I hate the fact that I listened to an hour of this yet.

I’m not big on instrumental albums but this was pretty good.

Vibraphone heavy, tango influenced, jazz with strings, etc.

This was alright, a little boring at times.

Piazzolla is definitely someone who should be on the list. His creative peak was in the 60s and 70s so it's strange that this is the (only) album that made the list. Probably the only one they knew. Favorite song: la rayuela

I started off not being so interested but by the final two tracks I was quite engaged. Never heard of the bandoneon before.

I have to be in the right mood for this type of thing… it hard listening to people make notes sound bad on purpose… I can respect it.. but it doesn’t have to be 10min long each time.

Engaging, creative music that isn’t to my usual taste. I would listen again I suppose. I don’t think I’ve ever considered accordion jazz before.

Interesting but just not my style

Favorite Track: Vibraphonissimo

Surprisingly enjoyable and more jazzy than expected.

Pleasant to listen to. Except for the xylophone(?)

This is a really fun album with unusual instrumentation (or maybe that is usual for new tango?). Only a couple of complaints. First, waaaaayyy too much xylophone or marimba or whatever that was. Second, there are literal cartoon "slipped on a banana peel" sounds throughout - which only add to the silent movie-music feel of the whole record. Still, the music itself can be very moving at times. 2.5/5.0: Mixed

Good instrumental album. Lots of improvisation.

It's all very good. Pretty engaging and exciting. Lots of dramatic moments. I for sure would not have listened to this on my own. But I also probably won't listen to it again

Was not aware of this album/historical significance before listening. Enjoyed it overall, especially the extra nuance of it being recorded at a festival. Some really beautiful moments and can see myself listening to for work music instead of my usual Philip Glass. Though this quote from the global reviews also feels true haha: "I feel like I'm trapped in the interstitial sections of an episode of Mister Rodger's Neighborhood."

I went on a long wikipedia rabbit hole today about Tango & specifically the Nuevo Tango style that Piazzolla started. That's why I love doing this challenge -- why else would I spend a whole day listening to tango?! I enjoyed this album - I think Operation Tango is my favorite. That said not sure I'll be coming back to this a lot. I did enjoy some of the other top songs on Piazzolla's spotify.

Enjoyed it. But it’s No Chopin, so I’m probably not revisiting it.

At times jazzy, evoking Danny Elfman at others. I don’t know if The New Tango is for me, but I found it enjoyable. Definitely enough variety to capture attention for the duration

Blind album and artist. Im really glad this is on the list because this is something I normally would never listen to and thought it was super cool, but not my style at all. Glad I tried it.

Liked it at parts, but im not a big fan of accordeon

Not bad but does seem to go on for a bit.

I appreciate the musicianship (xylophone went crazy on this one) but not anything I would return to. Shoutout to Montreux though.

Beautiful, but very sleepy. Not for me.

Lovely jazzy, with spanish spice, all live, very impressive. Best xylophone playing I've ever heard

I didn't expect anything at all from this, but I'm having quite a good time listening. This sounds like Danny Elfman's score of a stop motion film by Tim Burton where the protagonist spends a lot of time running and hiding. Not in a bad way ⭐⭐⭐

Funky but will never listen to this again

The album has some amazing moments but some parts go on for too long. 3,5*

Lovely bit of musical chaos

appreciate the musicianship here, but not really my vibe.

An interesting combination of musicians, but I feel the vibraphone softens the edges of the tango too much.

I expected to hate this album - Italian jazz strikes fear into my heart. But this was actually really interesting. It's equal parts melancholic and zany. Not something I get to say often

Overall I enjoyed this, but more as something you'd listen to in the background of a hotel lobby. Nice marimba sounds, but somewhat bland.

Incidental music for a ‘70s sci-fi thriller soft-core porno. But it was ok.

That's not my taste in music - But ok

It seems like this guy is legendary in his area, and this album is a minor footnote - so why?? 2.5

Instrumentally its pretty good, but, thats it. It borders on annoying here and there, but I guess something has to be said for the talent behind the band.

Had to shut it off after 4 songs. Talented musicians, really cool tunes, way too much fucking xylophone. So grating on the ears. Which is a shame because with less xylophone it would easily bump it up a star

I wish I knew more about tango as a genre to be able to talk intelligently about this one. I appreciate that this was a considered a important performance and that Piazzolla had reinvented tango throughout his career. I can hear that it's a bit different from other examples and I enjoyed listening well enough. But I don't have much to elaborate on beyond that.

This live album of tango-based instrumentals is expertly played and flawlessly recorded, but the results aren't consistently good. Some of the songs seem like beds for improvisation (especially on the vibraphone) but these are the least interesting tracks; the ones that are more tightly composed are the strongest and most memorable ones. Opening track "Milonga is Coming" has a movie soundtrack feel to it but is too tame to be interesting. "Vibraphonissimo" has lots 'n' lots of soloing on the vibes (no surprise) but is a little too monochromatic. "Little Italy" is pleasant but not much else. The album finally starts cooking with "Nuevo Tango", a precisely-written and crisply-played track which dials back the soloing in favor of well-defined melodies. The following track "Laura's Dream" can't keep up the momentum, however. Fortunately, "Operation Tango" is another tight composition with interesting interplay between the instruments. Closer "La Muerta del Angel" keeps the tempo moving but clutters up the arrangement with overly-busy soloing. (There is also some really weird violin playing on this record, from scratchy staccato parts to sci-fi sounds to police sirens. Bizarre and a bit distracting.)

If you’re into vibraphones and accordions, have I got an album for YOU.

Plinky plink plonk plank!!

It was certainly refreshing to get a more unconventional album. Don't think I will ever listen to it again but I am a little bit more enriched in my music knowledge

it’s not my kind of thing it’s good but i wouldn’t listen to it like i get the vibes but it’s mot really my thing as i am not really that much into kind of not singing music

Pretty great! Not sure what I was expecting but probably not that! The vibraphone/accordion combo made me feel like I was in a professor Layton game

Fun background music but didn't blow me away

good study music

Romantic, dark, and exciting. This album takes tango to a different place than I had in my mind. “Operation Tango” and “La Muerta de Angel” are my favourites at a first listen. The opening song “Milonga is Coming” was a great introduction to what’s to come. Feels like there’s a use of the xylophone a lot which I enjoy since I don’t get to hear that a lot. The accordion brings out my favourite elements of each composition too.

Sounded like a Tom and Jerry cartoon - which is not a bad thing lol

Very interesting album! Like fancy carnival music!

Free-form Jazz for accordion and xylophone? It's like Hunter S. Thompson and William S. Burroughs had a delirious drug fueled romp while listening to George Hamilton Green and Lawrence Whelk get down and dirty, and this was the offspring. Piazzolla & Burton: " Hey, we want to make an album" Record Exec: (Rips a fat fucking line off a dead hooker's ass) "YYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!"

Liked this more than I expected

It was nice to hear something a bit different, with touches of exotica, jazz and classical music. It's pleasant and easy on the ear but I can't really say it was exceptional.

I really understand why this makes the list and classical music doesn't. I like Astor Piazzola though. I had some album with Revancha del Tango (sp?!) in the nineties and it had some Roni Size -esque remixes, which were ... interesting.

It was like being in a Tim Burton fever dream. I then spent far too long trying to find a connection between Gary and Tim Burton... spoiler... there isn't.

It’s all very well crafted compositions. I really like all the tango and symphonic parts. Those parts were beautifully played. It’s the discordant modern jazz bits that just sound like sour notes to me. That style subtracts more than it adds. Otherwise, this was interesting and I really enjoyed hearing something new.

Musically, this is great. Moody, dark, delicate, and novel. Latin smooth jazz with violin, vibes and bandoleon? It works, well. Unfortunately, it's the sort of record that one must digest fully in one sitting. I've been getting a string of truly awful records for the past week. Please no more '60's rock. I beg you.

I wouldn't listen to it all the time but this was OK chill out music. The bandoneon isn't my favourite musical instrument but I kind of dug the vibraphone. Interesting. Glad I was exposed to it but never rises above decent.

It was different than I expected, I thought there would be more dramatic swings, but this was an interesting and emotional album. It felt quite whimsical even when dramatic, like Nintendo soundtracks. I am a fan.

Sure, I guess. I don't know enough about tango music to know if this is better or worse than others. I'm not very into it, but the arrangements and musicianship are obviously very good. Extra star for this actually being a surprising addition to the list.

Pleasant background music, but I have a couple of nitpicks with it. One, the vibraphone (marimba or whatever) is mixed too loud and it really pierces through the mix. Two, this album could be 15 minutes shorter. Three, a lot of the songs get a little repetitive and could be made a little bit tighter. But other than that this album is good. Mid 3.

I can't say I'm familiar enough with the old tango to fully appreciate this, but it was pleasant enough. I'm straight-up neutral.

interesting. not too memorable.

The New Tango? I was not super familiar with the old one. As musically sophisticated as this album is, it inspires no love for Tango music, or even a slight body movement toward doing the Tango on the dance floor.

background music

It was pretty cool, but didn't blow my mind or anything. Surprisingly good audio fidelity considering it's a live album.

Another new genre for me. Didn’t completely actively listen to all songs. But I did like a few of them. But then there were also moments of chaos which I didn’t love, but overall pretty enjoyable

Strange mix of milongas and jazz. Kind of cool in many instances. Others seem to go off on tangents a bit. It's soothing background music for the most part. Like afternoon literary coffee shop type music.

Knowing nothing about this guy, naturally I had to do some research while I listened to the album. Turns out Astor was the most influential new tango guy in Argentina, which is pretty important there. Anyhow, these are obviously very talented musicians. Seems like they should be making movie music - that’s what I was thinking as the album played on. It’s nice to hear some nuevo tango, although I suspect soon it will fade from my memory.

Hmm. Is this tango for the sake of tango, or is it actually good? Since I know nothing about tango, it's hard to say. But do I enjoy it? Eh, it's fine. Pros: I like instrumental music with strings and piano. It's pleasant and sometimes interesting. Cons: This is live (as you'd expect, I guess), so there's applause, which is distracting. And it turns out I am not a big vibraphone fan.

I can appreciate the talent. It just did not capture my attend like other instrumental albums have

This was very pleasing to me. Like actually good elevator music. And finally something actually interesting that I hadn't listened to before, and not more 80s brit punk rock pop. 3/5

Tango. Montreux Festival. Couple of librarian looking muthfuckas on the cover one with accordion, the other on glockenspiel. If there is ever an album cover and title combo that requires more effort to suspend all preconceptions, then I'd hate to see it. I am not completely averse to a bit of glock-rock ( it turns out it's a vibraphone). I'm sure many more listens are needed to understand it in full, and some of the appeal is in the fact this is live and the playing highly proficient and impressive to watch. The progressions sound quite lovely and adventurous without ever going into free form jazz - in fact this all feels highly structured and rehearsed to me. A bit more soul, a bit less accordion would be my suggestion. Much of it sounds like a Pixar moment of peril. It certainly has energy and is not dreary in the slightest. I'm willing to offer up a three.

I enjoyed it but probably wouldn't listen again. There is something special about it though.

It was good.. but it felt like it was going everywhere and nowhere all at once.

I can appreciate The New Tango for what it is—a masterclass in musicianship and innovation. Astor Piazzolla took traditional tango and reshaped it into something entirely new, blending it with jazz and classical influences. There’s no denying the sheer talent on display here, but at the end of the day, tango just isn’t my cup of tea. While I respect the artistry, it never fully clicks with me. The musicianship is ridiculous. Piazzolla’s bandoneón playing is expressive and full of character, weaving intricate melodies that feel both nostalgic and adventurous. The way he interacts with the other instruments, particularly the violin and piano is stunning, creating a constant push and pull of tension. You can feel the depth of emotion in tracks like Milonga del Angel, where every note seems to sigh with longing. The fusion of tango with jazz elements makes the album stand out. It’s not just dance music; it’s deeply layered, full of unexpected turns and dynamic shifts. Adiós Nonino is a perfect example. it starts off gentle, then builds into something far more intense, with moments that feel almost improvisational. Even though I’m not big on tango, I can’t deny that the arrangements here are masterful. That said, this album just doesn’t resonate with me. No matter how much I try to get into it, tango as a genre feels too dramatic and theatrical for my taste. There’s a certain flair to the way the melodies unfold that I can admire from a distance, but I don’t feel the connection that others do. Some tracks, like Michelangelo 70, feel a bit overwhelming, packed with flourishes that border on excessive. The intensity can be impressive, but sometimes it just washes over me rather than pulling me in. It’s the kind of album where I can appreciate the skill but don’t find myself emotionally engaged. The New Tango is an album I respect more than I enjoy. Piazzolla’s talent is undeniable, and the musicianship is fantastic, but tango as a whole just isn’t for me. If you’re into expressive, dramatic instrumentals, this might be a masterpiece. For me, it’s an intriguing listen, but not one I’ll be returning to often. A well-earned 3.3/5.

an extended smooth refrain.

Started slow but kinda grew on me the more it played. I don't know how I'd rate this. Favorite track(s): Little Italy Will I revisit?: low priority Current rating: 5/10

Would love to experience it live. Creative, fun and impressive musicianship. A very stressful casual listen though

When the vibes player really went off that was pretty cool

Very good showcase of a genre we don't often get to hear. I don't really know too much about tango or this album to say anything else, other that it was pretty enjoyable. No highlights, but everything consistently kept my attention. Mr. Piazzolla also has some studio albums I'm a little more familiar with.

Pretty cool vibes, prefer the first half over the second half…

Enjoyed this more than I expected to, not sure I'll go out of my way to listen again but I was pleasantly surprised

Music is not bad. Like listening to an old movie soundtrack for a movie I have never watched.

Mix of tango, classical, and jazz - Skillful instrumentation especially on the bandoneon and percussion such as vibraphone - Intermissions of classical with violins was nice, giving a grand dramatic feel that contrasts the whimsical tango vibe - No noteworthy melodies, good for background music

Not sure what tango is still, even after staying a month in Argentina. Clearly fantastic musicians, but think it'd best been seen live. Also not sure how one would dance to this, but what do I know?

Interesting but not for me, which is surprising since I like Astor Piazzolla and Gary Burton

Pretty solid stuff

This was a nice groove to listen to. I enjoyed this. It was nice and chill but showcased the talents of the musicians involved. Very nice.

Nice background music for a cocktail party.

I don't really feel qualified to give this a score. I liked what I heard even though I have no context for it.

Jazzy orchestral music with alternating leads from violin, xylophone, and that accordion type instrument. Complex melodies and dynamic composition with changing parts at top speed, discordant harmonies, angular rhythms, and abrasive tones keep it edgy and tense, building to intense moments of release. You'd twist your ankle if you tried to actually Tango to this, surely. An outlier in lots of ways, Zappa and gotham project being the closest comps I've come across so far.

I didn’t go nuts for it or anything, but I appreciate something a bit different. I wouldn’t have listened to this otherwise, and I’d rather listen to this than a lot of other stuff

Has a cosy, Sunday afternoon TV theme kind of vibe. "Next on ITV7, it's another dangerous case for Detective Milonga in It Takes Two... To Murder"

The New Tango had a sound that i feel is very unique and because of that, i think this album is pretty good. This album only really made use of three different instruments being an bandoneon, a xylophone, and a violin with maybe a double bass or cello being used but i don't quite know. These instruments somehow managed to blend together perfectly and give this album the sound a mystery movie or play would have and i think that's really cool. There were points where i did feel that the album was starting to get a little bit too long but i still enjoyed this album regardless. Best Song: Nuevo Tango Worst Song: Little Italy

Recorded well, but I don't understand the significance of it. I believe this is a case where the list wanted to draw attention to the artist. People do love this album. I did not. Yawwwwwwnnnnnn.

Really low volume on the Mix

Fine, not for me

pretty good

I respect that. Becoming the face for the whole genre of music is something not many people can be called. Though not my piece of taste, still there is a lot of passion in here. 3.5/5.

Really very pleasant and tolerable, but I was getting increasingly eager for it to end around the 45 minute mark. Would rate 3.5.

Well this is a bit different. Beautiful at time but it did ultimately become background music.

I'm adding a 3rd star because its different than the usual stuff we get

Elmo Jazz

2 - they're obviously talented and this is a work of art, but I just don't like most of it

What a strange album, but not in a bad way. I don't know anything about Tango music in general, but apparently this man (Piazzolla) is the absolute king of it. It's a pretty avant-garde (for the time) album that I would very loosely categorize as Jazz. The accordion like instrument that Piazzolla plays doesn't sound like much more than an accordion, but it seems deeper pitched and with a much wider range of notes. The Marimba/Vibraphone is also pretty cool, and surprisingly the two oddball instruments fit well together. Given I have nothing to compare this to I can't really rate it up or down on the average line on anything other than the listen I gave it. It's thoughtful music, maybe something you'd put on to seem sophisticated with a very specific crowd. It's not bad to listen to, just a bit strange. Almost like a film score.

Great Tango music. That's all I can say. It took me like a month to be able to listen to this all in one sitting.

A delightful romp through tango jams.

Nice change of pace, soothing

It was okay!

pleasant enough

Relaxing vibraphone that made driving really chill

Beautiful music but on the boring side. Seems to lack the drama of the old tango. 3 stars

Lightly seduced by a vibraphone leading you off into intriguing modes with a rose clenched between its teeth

This one was a little stressful to listen to while driving, but good bits

It is easy to think that it is worthy of all the stars but 3 makes the most sense because it did repeat a lot but it was decent background music.

enjoyed the use of accordion, xylophone, strings, & piano. felt like some tracks rambled on too long. overall not bad, but don't think I would seek it out again 3.5 stars

okay mate

This list never fails to surprise me at every single possible turn. I believe this might be the first record I’ve listened to that has no form of a Wikipedia article. Which left me with next to no information regarding what I was going to be hearing other than the genre label of Tango Nuevo. I always feel compelled to have at least some semblance of background or context for each album, so instead I looked into the performers themselves. And the two lead men who are credited on the cover are nothing short of world-class musicians. I had never heard of them before today, but their work is intrinsic to the evolution of their respective careers and instruments. Gary Burton is one of the most innovative and widely imitated vibraphonists of all time. And is known for pioneering the style of playing with four mallets at the same time. On the other hand, Astor Piazzolla is a renowned Argentinian tango composer and bandoneon player, whose pieces basically created the genre of Tango Nuevo. That genre takes the sound of tango and fuses it with the tropes of jazz and more Western world music. And from the moment this starts, there is something inherently entrancing about these songs. Such strange sounding music, but performed at a monumentally high level of skill. The two instruments of focus here and relatively unfamiliar to me, but immediately I knew I would never hear another person play them to a degree of such quality. But there is also something inherently off putting about this music. It sounds creepy, and the amount of atmosphere and dynamics they create is remarkable. There is one sound I heard multiple times throughout which sounded like a police siren passing over my head. Even with all of this though, it isn’t something I would ever desire to come back to. As mind-boggling as what I’m hearing is, it’s more an experience you go through one time. I think the talent and dedication definitely still needs to be recognized though. Rating: 5/10

An unexpected change of pace. I listened to this as I walked to/from the farmer's market, and it was a nice soundtrack to a lovely false-Fall morning. The instrumentals in this are skillfully done and the album flows between songs well. Not something I would have picked up to listen to on my own, but I'm glad to have heard it.

Well, I can feel confident now that I am not the target audience for tango. I'm not sure if anyone in the tango world was concerned about that, but the issue is now settled. This album is fine, with lots of good musicianship, but I can make heads or tails about what I'm supposed to get from this album. It's just not for me 3/5

I’m not going to lie I completely forgot what this one was like. The only thing worth mentioning is that Nuevo Tango was my absolute fave and that it caught me completely off guard. Overall not too bad, but there were elements of holding music which I was not much a fan of.

This was a solid listen. Very easy listening for me in the background. It was hard for me to pick anything out specifically that I liked but also hard for me to pick out anything that I disliked. I don't listen to Tango ever or vibraphones and it was quite pleasant. I feel like it wasn't very Tango-y though. It felt almost more like classical/jazz with tango influence in some songs but I don't listen to any Tango.

Super cool record. The marimba is really captivating with this. Its sounds kind of mystical but fluid. When played next to the accordion, its really full and interesting to listen to. I don't know much about tango, but this was a fun listen.

too jazzy for me? (':

Y'all, it's been a rough past three days. This is my second straight day of hearing songs that are just instrumentals and my third straight day of an album I am not familiar with nor do I want to be even more familiar with. This album does not have a wikipedia page, which should not mean much, yet there are millions of people on the Internet who love things so much they want to build a wikipedia page for that thing. No one loves this album enough to create a page. I believe this is the first album "I must hear before I die" that sounds like it could actually be played at my funeral. Little Italy sounds like a chase scene from a 1920's silent movie. Feels like these guys would have made a killing scoring early 20th century movies, so it sucks to be born so far after your time like that. Imagine missing the opportunity to rub elbows with Charlie Chaplin and instead having to perform in front of wealthy middle-aged white people who think hearing a Brazilian guy play the vibraphone gives them a deep sense of culture. These two could have been the old tango to Carmen Miranda's samba, perhaps even teaming up for a film which Astor Piazzolla and Gary Burton would of course score. Along with what would Earth be like if the meteor leading to the extinction of dinosaurs had just missed landing on this planet, this potential team-up is another "what if" that will haunt the minds of those prone to pondering such scenarios. Most likely, we could have had Carmen Miranda samba-ing her way across the stage while Astor Piazzolla plays the hell out of the accordion to 50,000 adoring velociraptors. Yet, who needs a Big Bang when the light tapping of Gary Burton's four-mallet technique during the 12 minutes of Laura's Dream can serve to satiate one's appetite for a good night at the theater?

This one sort of came out of nowhere, at least for me. I can't really say I'm up on all the tango greats. This was a fun album, you don't really hear a vibraphone much anymore. Maybe not a record I would play a lot or even again, really, but I enjoyed it today. It would have been a great show to see live, I think this kind of music is a lot better to experience seeing it played rather than just listening. But it was good nonetheless and I am happy to have heard it. 3/5

Marimba jazz

The longer it went the harder it was for me to get through a song. Very strong xylophone or something

Good album.

lmao is saw someone describe this as "elevator music" - what kind of elevators are you taking??

Pretty decent album. Not bad at all.

Not my usual jam but actually quite enjoyable. Went on a bit though.

The vibraphone isn’t my favorite instrument, but some fun songs

Interesting, but not something I would come back to. The technical proficiency shines through, but I didn’t feel like there were a lot of memorable moments or themes. It all ended up feeling like the best score of a Disney movie ever written. 2.7

I think I prefer Piazzola solo.

I'm not familiar with this artist or album, nor am I terribly familiar with tango music, but this sounds new and interesting, so I'm excited to dive into it. Overall, this was fine to listen to. Even with what felt like a fairly restrictive group of instruments to work with, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of sounds on this album. The vibraphone, piano, and bandoneon all combined to make some great sounds. I don't know if all tango music has a bit of an Italian feel to it, but I enjoyed how the bandoneon gave a Mediterranean flair to these arrangements. Even though these songs were pleasant and interesting, the length of them was a bit off-putting for me. That might be due to my unfamiliarity with this type of music, but I tend to be pretty critical of longer songs in general. I also didn't like the sharp plucking of the violin that was present on most of the songs. However, on "Operation Tango," I really enjoyed the violin parts. My biggest criticism of this album though is that all the songs felt anxious in tone. I don't know if it was that violin plucking that made me feel that way, or the tempo of the songs, but either way, I would have enjoyed a little bit more range of emotions from the music. Still, this was a unique experience, and I enjoyed listening to this album.

At times I was really enjoying this modern, jazzy version of tango... At the end of the day, I'd rather listen to the authentic tango than this. But worth the listen.

Cool. 3

A pleasant supprise. I enjoyed this album more than I thought would

Not the sort of album I expected on here but I don’t dislike it! And I always love a live album. Okay accordion?? I will say I don’t really know what genre this is? It’s nice instrumental music, I just think it’s a little disjointed sometimes? And I feel like for instrumental to make an impact it really has to *do* something for me. It’s just hard to rank this against “Rumors.” Maybe I’m a bad person for having this take…. I just don’t think I love it. I’ve decided it’s the vibraphone! It’s throwing me off. It’s a 3.5 so I’m giving it a 3.

Now I know what you're thinking, "Oh jeez, just another bandemoneon and vibraphone player teaming up for the glory, money, and fame." But NO! These are two musicians at their finest, doing what they do best. Piazzolla continues his unparalleled advancement of the entire genre of Tango. Meanwhile you have the master of marimba, the virtuoso of vibraphone, the GOAT of glockenspiel, Gary Burton himself tearing it up throughout the entire album. It's unusual, really good for a live album, and despite not being sure if I enjoyed it I do respect the musicianship. Good genre expansion for the 1001 album list.

Made me feel like taking a nap.

Interesting and dramatic. Highly skilled, especially the vibraphone player. The music is a bit dramatic for my tastes, and the high to low slides of the fiddle are a bit distracting.

A beautiful record with some virtuosic vibraphone playing. However, most of the melodies aren’t that special to me. Still a fun one to listen to though.

Sounds like the soundtrack for an animated movie about an Italian mouse that’s a spy. 3/5

Bravo! From frantic to mellow with much in between. Heavy on the xylophone, sawing violin, and accordion makes the album sound dated. Nuevo Tango is the best track. Many of the numbers would work well as the soundtrack for high energy cartoons. Liked it enough to rate the album at (2.7*s)

I'm a sucker for melancholy violin and this album came at the right time, very emotive and interesting overall. I'm not familiar with Tango so I don't know what New Tango does differently, but I enjoyed it. It's good background music, it could be the soundtrack to a section of Fantasia made by Pendleton Ward and Tim Burton. "Nuevo Tango" stood out, "Laura's Dream" is a whole mood (very moving). The set runs a little long, but it's like a ballet for blind people so it gets away with it. It's the best you're gonna get from a xylophone paired with a giant accordion. I actually listened to it several times through.

The first half feels like music to a 70s comedy train caper starring Michael Caine before switching channels to watch obscure Looney Tunes cartoons. I really want to like this more than I do - in a way I want it to be *more* weird. I'm left mystified after listening and I feel like my 3 is even a little generous, but knowing the musicianship on display here I felt a little badly giving it less... 5/10 3 stars.

Лучшая песня - Milonga Is Coming.

Fun but would not go back. How much vibraphone can one person listen to in one sitting? this much apparently

Really talented musicians and writers. Interesting enough and not a bad listen, but, just not my bag and something that I'd get into.

pretty interesting but the length holds it back for me. strong 6/10

There are some great moments on this. It just needs to be 20mins shorter.

This is totally new to me. I enjoyed listening. Felt like a film score. It sure made mowing the lawn feel a lot more adventurous today!

It's bad, but chill enough to get 3 stars.

Muy bueno.

Interesting. 3/5

This is probably pretty good, but I don't listen to much classical or jazz so I can't really compare it to much. It was fine as background music.

Enjoyable.

Pleasant enough floating by in the background. Little movement away from the core.

Pretentious attempt to make tango into jazz. That said, not bad, I quite enjoyed it as background music while I worked.

A good instrumental album

This was not what I was expecting when I saw tango. This album has classical, jazz, and a lot more. Fun, energetic pieces that make for good work/study music. I’ll be adding this to the get-shit-done repertoire.

Lovely and well recorded, just boring and unintelligible.

Algo nuevo para mí.

Yikes, well, this was super disappointing. I kept trying to picture being at some cabaret show watching sultry dancers tangoing away. And then the vibraphone would come in and take over again and it was like something a bit naff from the 80s. Damn you Gary Burton

This was perfectly fine classical music and I was happy to have it on in the background while I jogged. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Milonga Is Coming Rating: 3

Fattar ingenting.

so good

There were parts on every song that I really liked, but then it just went bit too modern for my liking.

2024-05-07...

Really like the vibraphone and orchestral sounds, but not for my casual listening.

It was alright, maybe I expected more from a live recording at Montreax. It had interesting tango-like music, but overall kind of slow and repetitive.
