Note to self: from now on, my numeric rating is just about the importance of the album in my life, not about whether the album is an important cultural artifact or not. On that level, Astor Piazzolla is very important to me. Well, WAS very important. Growing up in Lexington, I loved the public libraries there. I remember finding "Juju Root" at 15 in their vinyl collection, which featured lots of "ethnic music" from around the world. I developed a taste for all kinds of things, but especially for stuff on Rhino or Folkways. First year of college, Daniel and shared a late night radio show. WMFO had a huge collection of music from around the world--including Astor Piazzolla records. I played them regularly on my show, and I played recordings at home. I was entranced by the feeling images I drew from it, of late night sharks in suits and slinky dresses, cigarettes, tenderness, cruelty, caprice. Some of his songs are etched into my memory forever.

Yes!

I don't know enough about this style of music to articulate why I enjoyed this, but I did! There's lots of movement in these compositions, and they are filled with energy. Favorites: Vibraphonissimo, Little Italy

Astor meets Jazz - Live at Montreux. Excellent!

This is an epic album. A lot of these songs feel very familiar. I feel like Nobuo Uematsu must have taken some serious influence for these guys for some Final Fantasy tracks, especially FF9 with the accordian, hectic strings, and pretty vibraphone. Very enjoyable listen. Sneaky 5.

Brilliant, it being live adds so much. Bit long, but I'm sure subsequent listens will remedy that feeling

Dream like instrumentals

This is an absolutely fucking brilliant album.

As the officers in that one South Park episode would say: "Nice.". 5/5

So peaceful

Also great orchestra/instrumentals

This is such a beautiful album. Gary Burton is the finest vibraphonist on the planet. Piazzolla's compositions are mind blowing.

Wonderful performance, great balance between dynamics, incredible musicianship. As a percussionist myself, love the vibing vibrafone

Definitely new tango as it sounds nothing like I thought it would sound like. Very light and lifting and I really enjoyed it!

Relaxing. Perfect music to chill on a grey Thursday afternoon.

First time listening. Incredibly sweet and vivid.

Thoroughly enjoyed this.

Fabulous. Like a score to an exciting and charming movie.

10/10 there’s something particularly special about jazz being paired with an accordion— or in this case, a bandeón, which is technically a type of concertina; beautiful regardless

Delightful! I listened to this while taking a walk and it felt like my life had the most amazing soundtrack in that moment. The musicianship and complexity of the music was incredible to listen to. A true pleasure.

Magnificent, spellbinding, and alsbolutely electric. One of the most intense performances I've ever heard, and every second is captivating. The songs take such wild twists and turns, but always feel controlled in a very satisfying way. An absolute masterpiece

Unfamiliar with these artists and this genre, but enjoyed this record so much. Such a lovely soundtrack to a Sunday morning. I will come back to this.

This is unreal for a live album. Very unique and very well done. I felt like I was living a far more dramatic life the second the album started, and a few songs had me feeling like I was about to bargain with a trickster god.

This is one of the things I like about this experience. I doubt I would have heard this otherwise. This is beautiful. Laura's Dream, when the beat drops. The recording is amazing for a live album.

Okay. I haven’t really been listening as much anymore so in the sake of trying to get back into I let my 6 year old rate this one. She said it should get two 5s. She liked it right away because she said she could hear a violin, cello and a xylophone. There’s not a xylophone but there is a vibraphone so we learned that and learned what a bandoneón is, it’s like an accordion but sadder sounding. And Maeve loves it now so, 5 stars it is.

As someone with a soft spot for vibraphone and tango, this album is a double-whammy of awesome. I have not listened to much of Astor Piazzolla's own work, even though I'm a huge fan of many works that are clear derivatives (ex. Astor in Paris by 3 Leg Torso or Violenza Domestica by Mr. Bungle). I listened to this multiple times and it's something I'll be coming back to often. I need to look for more Gary Burton stuff too now. 4.5/5

It's always the albums you least expect. The Montreux Music Festival is often home to some spellbinding moments in music history that were thankfully documented for everyone to stumble upon and cherish. Some are more well known than others, yet this gem from Astor Piazzola and Gary Burton is not only largely unknown but it deserves to be held in the same high esteem as the rest. From the first note down to the last, The New Tango grabs your attention and not only maintains it but it also swoons and leave you wondering how on Earth have you not heard any of this before. And The New Tango, regardless of its near hour long length, would make you want to listen again. Good thing this list exists so that we can encounter gems like this.

5/5. This was a crazy album, full of expert musicianship and instruments I have not heard before played in this way. I feel like I'm listening to a controlled fever dream. It's eerie and loud and quiet and beautiful all at the same time. It's like horror movie soundtrack mixed with classical Tango. It's honestly crazy how they were able to make this music live on stage, I feels like it was recorded and edited in a studio and then you hear the audience at the end of each song and you are brought back. No complaints, entertaining, kept me engaged with the unique sounds throughout the record. I love finding albums like this through this list. Best Song: Nuevo Tango, Vibraphonissimo, Operation Tango

5 for recording and performance. Now, let's move on to modern tango.

I did not know what to expect -- this kind of stuff is far from my musical comfort zone -- and it started not that well, the beginning of the album did not really grab my attention. But then everything is falling in place, they find their rhythm and the music becomes addictive and unstoppable. I don't have many references in the genre, but it reminded me of Bacalov's Misa Tango (that should appear in the list if it is not the case). We apparently needed this new tango.

magico

One of my favorite composers! I love Piazzolla so much and how he created the "New Tango". I never really heard this album that much before today but I really like it. The collaboration with a vibraphone virtuoso is a plus. Gary and Astor collab is awesome, and the quintet was on fire. I love the piano player Pablo Ziegler. Still, my favorite Piazzolla albums are the Live at Montreaux festival '84. And the Central Park concert. This recording is missing one of my favorite Piazzolla compositions: "Adios Nonino" which I'd have loved to hear with the vibraphone sound.

This was such a nice surprise. Spy movie music.

My main takeaway from this album is that I will love any genre if it has enough vibraphone or glockenspiel

Had no idea how badly I needed the accordion-vibraphone jazz combo - fuck ya!

Big fan of both of these two on their own, put the two together, superb.

today i found out i apparently love tango

this is nice

Would not expect I’d give 5 stars to an accordion and some vibraphone but this fucking slapped.

I don't know anything about tango, but I was absolutely captivated by this performance. I've listened to it several times already. Astor Piazzolla introduced jazz into his tango compositions while also playing with the structure of classical music and Baroque counterpoint. He was an incredibly productive composer - the list on Wikipedia is long! The violin playing is both haunting and exhilarating and gave me goosebumps. Every instrument has its time in the spotlight, but even when they fade to the background, they're doing something interesting. One of my favorite moments is the applause following Burton's solo on Vibraphonissimo. It makes me smile; it's so deserved. It also makes me miss going to live performances like this, but the mix on this recording is excellent and makes you feel like you're right up close to the ensemble. Wholly delightful experience, 5 stars.

5/5, difficult to imagine anything slapping harder

As a classically trained percussionist I'm very familiar with Burton and Piazzolla's collaboration. I've even played some of this myself. I did not need to listen to this to score it but did anyway, what an amazing piece of art this is. I'm kind of sad to see the abundance of one stars on this but it's to be expected on something so niche as this.

Really good jazz that borders between serene and eerie.

Albums like this are exactly why I'm doing this. Something not in my normal wheelhouse that I get turned on to and like. I've never heard of Astor Piazzolla but you can bet your ass I'm gonna listen to this album again. Probably even seek out more. I had no clue I would ever want to hear something like this and now I do.

Love the spookiness of some of the tracks! Reminded me of Danny Elfman. Great focus album.

Not bad. It's a relaxing and lounge album. Definitely worth plenty of listening sessions.

The opening track, “Milonga Is Coming”, instantly became one of my favorite instrumental compositions - devastatingly beautiful. A captivating live recording that made me forget about anything else during its entire duration.

Monster players on a monster album. The virtuosity is A+, and its live! To me it often sounds orchestral with shades of Shostakovich and Stravinsky. They create their own sound and reinvent the Tango. The sound of the strings and accordion is almost otherworldly at times. This is exactly the kind of album which belongs on this list: unique, groundbreaking, and important. 5

I can’t even articulate how much I loved this. It was all completely new to me and it hit me like a truck… I really have no words here. Probably because I don’t know how to talk about music in any useful way, but really I am just in awe. It’s like gnashing, angry noise, but sad and beautiful and melancholic, and I was happy, and then I was staring pensively out the window… idk. I need an extra star or two for this one. (ntm.)

When I first read "Tango", I immediately imagined the dance, or the music to the dance, but this is so much more, and so much different. It's really a type of classical music. Super dynamic — at times energetic, at times sweet and delicate. I'll need to listen to this at least a dozen more times to truly absorb the details. Excellent discovery.

I listened to it 5 times throughout the day. Absolutely lovely. Incredible musicianship; delightfully jazzy; emotionally charged. It's got everything. Going to have to pick this one up.

This was fantastic. I thought that at the very least, I’d be exposed to some tango and it would be cool, but this was much more complex than that. These are intricate compositions that cover a wide breadth of styles.

Boy did I love this album. Absolutely fantastic. The only question I have is if they’re going to include albums like this on this list, why the hell are we listening to so much shitty 70s prog rock?

Really fantastic jazz album. Love Gary Burton, and Astor Piazzolla was amazing. 5/5!

The only thing better than discovering a brilliant album is discovering a brilliant artist with a whole back catalogue.

Delightful!

I had no knowledge of or context for this. As an old fart muso it was great to be surprised and delighted by something on this. I strongly suspect the 1 star reviewer who described this as elevator music didn't go past the first track or they've been on some fairly frantic elevators. Ach they've made me do an unintended Mick Hucknall reference. Told you I'm an old fart muso.

Straight fire

Wonderful work. Great musicians, great music. I suppose difficult for all, which are not used to jazz, tango or similar music but if you are patient enough to listen a few times to this album it will pay you back!

Oh I love this! Fantastic musicians. Music to work to, during a dinner, etc.

Honestly one of the most surprisingly stunning album on the list. So fucking good. Two absolute titans of their instrument teaming up to create an hour of mezmorizing tango

Just five stars without any comments!

As far as instrumentals go, I like the noises in this one a lot. It was really fun! Like imo this should be a 4 but the fact that I think an instrumental should be a 4 makes it a 5 I think. 9/10

Very much enjoyed it. Happy and complex with some of the underlying tension present in Tango. Quite fun!

Genius Astor - nett ergänzt mit Marimbaphon.

Favorites: La Muerta deL Angel, Milonga is coming Fun album!

From calm to frantic there is incredible playing throughout this recording. Watch the video on youtube for an idea of how much work it is.

Completely unexpected

Yeah, okay, I love it

I actually love Tango, I def need to listen to it more.

Masterful and passionate music. Two beasts surprisingly making widely disparate music sound like it was meant to be. Will revisit.

Gary Burton was the name of my Hoosier bus driver.

Phenomenal.

Love a good jazz adjacent album

Evidently, I just love Jazz because I just let Apple Music keep playing a smart playlist after this, and time disappeared.

Increíble la reinterpretación

Never had I dreamed that the combination of Accordion and Vibraphone would be enthralling. This album is 58 minutes of purse musical virtuosity, and it reminds me that there are still so many areas of music I have yet to uncover. Fav Tracks: Best enjoyed in it's entirety

Absolutely invigorating. I feel vigorous!

You had me at vibraphone. Then once I figured out what a bandoneon was you had me there too. This sounded much more modern and varied than I expected from a tango album. The songs progressed through different moods and emotions that I found very compelling. Again I am thankful for being introduced to another album that I would likely never have encountered but for this project.

Sounds like a work of genius. This is the first album in the two weeks or so I've been rating albums here I had to listen to more than once as it was so good. What a fantastically enjoyable wild ride!

Ripping accordian part on the first track. This is really pleasant and i like it. This is a really refreshing and lovely album. La Muerta Del Angel is just this beautiful icing on this total cake of an album!

xylophone goes CRAZY here!!!!

A new discovery. Quote extraordinary

Really liking this blending of styles. Some parts I didn't like as much but overall super cool.

I'm not even sure how to describe this, only that it gives me classical feels and that it's fascinating in the best way

Really love this album and never would have chosen it for myself. As a classically trained musician this just made my heart happy.

Well this was unexpected. I really dug these instrumental tracks and will enter my chill music to listen to at work playlist. This is the type of stuff the list is made for. I'd have never listened to this without it. A fantastic find and some really great tunes and musicianship.

What a find. Wow.

Initially sceptical that I needed to hear any tango, let alone new tango, I must say the sheer power and beauty of this Nuevo Tango record was staggering. I don’t think there is a piece of music quite like it - passionate, powerful and deep - a jazz recording, a classical composition, nigh impossible to categorise. I found it to be captivating and could not stop listening. A work of art.

Vibes aren't everyone's favorite, but I like this music

Very cool

i don't get why the ratings are so low this was so interesting and wonderful to listen to after a long day... sounds like totoro if he was in requiem for a dream

No idea what this is. Pretty good album, not really what I usually listen to but enjoyed it. Just some good instrumental jazzy music.

Can’t say I have the full experience with tango (or modern classical or jazz) to say I can get everything out of this, but I can say it’s really engaging and sounds so unlike any other Latin jazz or South American music I’ve heard with the particular instrumentations but also how they’re built out in these compositions. Fantastic energy in the performance but also just fascinating music to be performed, often switching between (what I understand to be) traditional tango sounds and altogether different ideas, giving it just enough discordance and grit to sound like it’d be completely out of place in an elevator (as people love to say Latin music would fit there).

A classical, jazzy, vibraphonic, journey. Given the proper listening attention it deserves, it is a beautiful masterpiece.

I enjoyed the music and will look up any albums from these artists that aren't recorded live (I hate live albums; I don't want to hear the clapping. It makes my skin crawl.)

I don't know anything about Tango, but I know that I like this. So much passion. The composition is really well done. I feel like I'm being told a story using only the music. I don't foresee myself revisiting this album, but I'm glad this project introduced me to it.

Wonderful album with interesting and varied instrumentation choices

Don't like tango, but this one was nice and jazzy. Also that marimba kicked ass

wusste nicht, dass das tango is. sehr cool, sehr spannend zum anhören und genießen. a paar songs sind bissi viel aber all in all schön und wechseln von hecktisch auf ruhig. gfallt ma gut. sag wieder 4/5 weil echt sehr cool!!

Very nice live album

Could be music in a Wes Anderson movie.

Piazolla and Burton - while I’m not necessarily fan of Piazolla’s instrument, these two are masterful together

Thought this was really fantastic. I suspect that capturing this live is probably the best way to present this kind of music and the skill of the players.

I had no idea this existed. Wonderful!

I've never heard anything quite like this. I think the word mysterious summarizes the feeling of this album well. It was jazzy at points, but it was mostly composed like a movie soundtrack or a contemporary classical piece. The arrangements were rich and detailed, *vibrant* even. I think the vibraphone is a beautiful instrument that is under utilized. The same can be said about the accordion or various percussive sounds produced by the string section throughout this album. The accordion as well as the minor scale – centric compositions reminded me of Cajun music..? My main criticism would be that it's not great for casual listening, but otherwise I thought this album had a lot to offer.

I feel that my review isn't worth much on this. Its value is proportional to the amount of attention you can give it as a listener For what it's worth, I respect the musicianship and the fantasies that unfold. They're getting so much out of their instruments. The musicianship does feel over-indulgent at times though

just wonderful, vibrant playing from front to back. the way the record comes back to those bass-and-piano pulses, a kind of menacingly earthy anchor for the other, more sinuous instruments, is wonderful. also maybe the first time on this list where an album's live-ness adds to the pleasure of it - so cool to hear people genuinely hooting and hollering for this involved, deliberate (but very stylish and beautiful) music. maybe overrating this but like fuck it! talent and composition on display are without fault and i would so much rather listen to a genre of music i've never properly gotten to know than another blues-rock record from the 60s and 70s

Transported to a Buenas Aires cafe where everything is twinkle and drama and roses and rum.

Highlights: - Nuevo Tango I was kinda dreading this album based on the name but it's really good. Criminally underrated imo. Stunning performances by the musicians. The violin in particular is incredible. Violin will always be my favourite instrument for these sort of performances. The scratchiness and textured sound contrasted by the smooth sound conveys so much raw emotion. 4

Jazzy italiano letsagooo

uhh, 12 monkeys vibes. a brutal journey on a raw and twisted path.

Stunned truly

I was expecting this to be a slog but I thought it was great. I will say the (relatively) shorter songs are a bit stronger as the longer ones drag on a bit. Pleasantly surprised by this one.

These are great, lush performances from a potent combo, but honestly they sound more like a movie soundtrack than a jazz performance. But it's a REALLY GOOD movie soundtrack, one that I'd probably buy after seeing the movie. Favorites: "Vibraphonissimo" and "Laura's Dream".

very beautiful and intense. gives me great ace attorney soundtrack vibes fav song: Operation Tango

A dream within a drean.

Study music I guess Kinda chill

Loved it!

Not what I expected at all, but pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it

Thoroughly enjoyed. Took me through all the emotions - fun, frantic, sexy, saucy, angry, lovely. Would make a good doomed romance soundtrack.

If you're ever looking for some good study music this album is great. I got up quite early this morning to study for my physics final and normally I would find it difficult to get started but I locked in pretty much straight away. This is great

This album was a fun listen Fav songs: Nuevo Tango, Operation Tango

4⭐️/5 03.31.2026

I love Astor Piazzolla, but not sure about the addition of vibraphone

Strange instrumentation but incredibly virtuosic and well coordinated. Very cool and unique.

Awesome

I’ve been Tango’d. What a great recommendation from 1001. I never knew I needed this much bandoneon in my life. Vibes dude Gary Burton is great as well even if the second track does kind of sound eerily too much like Bowser’s Staircase in Mario 64. Just a quick check through Astor Piazzolla’s solo work and I can tell that Tango: Zero Hour is even yummier.

fiddle > vibes

Falls squarely into you should hear it but you don't have to category. I will never return but this was really good. Great writing, great players, what more can you ask for? Elevator music is very fair but it’s some good elevator music.

Some of these compositions are beautiful, but you need to be in the right headspace for an entire album.

This makes me wish I was in a dimly lit lounge, sharing some tapas with my lady enjoying some arguably over priced but delicious cocktails

I’m not entirely sure what I wanted this album to be, but this wasn’t it. Something about the songs felt a bit too stiff for me. It sounds great for a live album, but the songs fall a bit flat for me.

I liked it

I don't think I understood much of this, but I always dig a vibraphone.

Just lovely. The New Tango by Astor Piazzolla and Gary Burton is quite beautiful. The arrangements are beautiful, from start to finish, and the progressive tint to tango make this album even more interesting. The frequent tinkling sounds were so pleasant and fun. The combination of Piazzolla as the composer and Burton on the vibraphone is fantastic. Lately, live albums on this list have been trying, to say the least, because I question their inclusion and don't hear anything different from a studio album. This audience is more subdued than I've heard in other live recordings, but audiences behave differently with instrumental music. I thought I would give a 3, maybe even round up to 4 with a 3.5, but this is a solid 4 album. Happy to have listened to this one.

Well, it does take 2 to tango, after all. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

Pretty cool record. Piazzolla is the favourite composer of a friend of mine who also plays piano. So I knew a lot of his songs.

10/02/2026 It was good elevator music. Spotify listeners: Astor Piazolla - 517.7k Gary Burton - 128.4k

Really impressive xylophone or whatever that was and also a bunch of different instruments which we don't normally hear. Pretty much best used as background music because it was getting lost with how soothing it was at times. But it was damn good background music. Absolutely flew by I did not realize that was an hour long

Holy xylophone. This came and went mighty fast, and I mean that in a great way. Had some pretty epic parts to it. Was pretty fun to listen to with Olympic skiing on in the background. I felt some of these songs told a story without having any lyrics in them, which is pretty cool.

8.5/10

I'm bit of a sucker for this music, especially the music/instruments. And live? Yeah, gotta love it. Also, big on Tango: Zero Hour. Maybe that's also coming along at some point....

Not familiar with tango/nuevo tango, but I was familiar Gary Burton before this and his vibraphone is definitely what sticks out to me here, especially on "Vibraphonissimo". 7.5/10

Good banter to be fair.

Great combination, vibes and tango.

The New Tango by Astor Piazzolla is a striking and refreshing experience, especially for a listener who may not be accustomed to tango or its modern interpretations. From the very first moments, the music feels bold and unconventional, breaking away from traditional expectations and opening the door to something far more exploratory. What makes this album particularly compelling is how Piazzolla blends the emotional intensity of tango with elements of jazz and classical music. The result is a sound that feels both raw and sophisticated, familiar yet constantly surprising. There is a strong sense of tension and movement throughout the pieces, which keeps the listener engaged even when the structures feel unfamiliar. Although this is not a style I usually gravitate toward, I found The New Tango to be very, very interesting. Its originality and expressive depth demand attention, and by the end, it becomes clear why Piazzolla’s work is considered so influential. This is not just tango, it is a reinvention of the genre, and a rewarding listen for anyone willing to step outside their musical comfort zone. 8/10

Pleasantly surprised; had no expectations here. Would put this on in the background if I wanted something interesting, lovely, unique but not distracting.

Beautiful album. To my pop music ears some of the tracks come off as old movie cinematic, not sure how to describe it - but I know nothing about tango. Also wish Burton was turned just a touch. Loved the violinist. Astor Piazzolla kind of looks like Joe Zawinul without the beanie.

The xylophone is throwing me off, but it's giving Professor Layton, so I'm not mad. I think it's the accordian, but nonetheless it's an interesting experience that I would have liked to see in person!

Tango is something you have to be in the mood for, but it was fantastic if you are. I can see why this guy is revolutionary.

The personification of adult public radio pop music.

I love jazz. I think this is jazz? It’s at least jazz mixed with carnival acid music. A weird and wonderful listen.

Playing on another level by the specialists in their respective fields. Excellently recorded live album.

So interestingly good and innovative. But need to be in the right mood. Not a desert island record but worthy of five stars otherwise. Thus only 4.

the performances are pretty great Will I listen to again: 18%

3.5/5 so fun but felt sometimes répétitive

This was a cool album that I probably never would’ve come across on my own, which ended up being a good introduction to jazz tango. Overall, it’s a pretty laid back listen, and beyond that there isn’t much else to overanalyze, other than it’s worth listening to.

Surprisingly awesome. I don't get jazz - at all - but this had some classical vibes, some jazzy bits, and I suppose a bit of tango as well, since that's in the name. 3.5 stars, would totally listen again.

you aint even gotta ask

Haunting

Miellyttävää vaihtelua listaan! 4/5

Jazz really comes alive when it's played and listened to live. Don't get me wrong; I listen to a lot of jazz albums recorded in recording studios in a clean environment and almost always enjoy it but there's something about hearing it in a live environment. The musicians have more freedom to play around with the music and work off of each other in a way that isn't always possible in a recording studio. I could hear that in this album and it was very enjoyable.

This is a classical album. It flowed nice

This album is going to be my ring tone! It must play in full before I answer.

Never thought I’d like an album of accordion symphonies, but here we are.

I'll come back to this album. It was pretty good. Very different.

Smooth, cool and easy listening.

Tango composer. World jazz. Beautiful, floaty and smooth first song. A bit xylophone heavy. Gets more experimental and chaotic as the album goes on.

love this already. the musician ship, the compositions, its all quite great. some songs are a tad long, but i understand why. 9/10

I loved most of this. It starts so strongly, I really loved the first track but as it goes on it starts to drag. Masterful musicianship though, phenomenal stuff!

This is pretty sweet - enjoy some tango.

I love the xylophone! I want to learn to play the xylophone so bad! There is never enough xylophone in music. I really enjoyed listening to this while I worked.

Surprised how much I liked this. I usually hate vibraphone but this tango really worked for me

Interesting instrumentals. Would like to listen to this again.

This was a new one for me. I actually really enjoyed it. Sections of it sound like they could be the soundtrack of a Sierra adventure game from the 90s. That is a good thing. It goes to some really unusual places while remaining musical. I like having something to listen to that is outside of what I would normally gravitate to. Even if it is not for me it is an interesting experience. I do wonder if some people simply have a visceral reaction to something they are unfamiliar with and are rendered incapable of meeting it on its own terms. I really struggle to see how anyone could compare this to elevator or hold music. It's got too much variation in dynamics, tempo, and mood.

4.4 1st impression was to buckle up for an hour of elevator music. Listened for a bit and I was kinda vibing (pun intended). Ok, its at Montreaux, lets check out the concert on youtube to see whats going on. By the time I got finished Nuevo Tango, I was pretty much blown away by the virtuosity of the musicians and the arrangements. I always thought the xylophone or vibraphone would be impossible to play, especially when they got a couple of sticks in each hand. This is going to be a discovery for me like Fela was

This type of Cinematic Jazz kinda rules!

Tango that goes harder than many a rock album.

A new one for me. Excellent. 4

Will probably never listen again but I liked it. It reminded me of music that would be in a kids movie

**** Lively and uplifting, a wonderful album to get things done to!

Really enjoyed this in the background

Great low vibe relaxing music. Background happy.

Waking up with a migraine I shuddered when I saw the word Tango. This, however, was beautiful - sweet melodies with complex percussion.

Banger

Sick album to throw on, moody, mysterious, and energetic. Exceptional atmosphere.

This is really fun

I sometimes struggle to rate albums based on an objective scale of how good they are vs. how much I like them. I don't particularly care for this album, but I also can't deny the craftsmanship.

Honestly really like this. Nicely played, nice motifs.

Listened to this while playing Bitoku. I have been a fan of Piazzolla for a while now. As a pianist, I have loved playing through his tangos...who doesn't love Oblivion? This album was fantastic. I was unfamiliar with a couple of the songs...but every one was great. Definitely a solid 4.5.

Bizarre and out of left field, but it sucked me in. Xylophone is a crazy instrument but the more I listened the more engaging it was. The nuance between the piano and xylophone could be both subtle and breathtaking at times.

I enjoyed this, meant to tell Tom about it but I forgot

100 percent instrumental. Great work music imo

This album showed me that there's more to Piazzolla than just Libertango. But crucially, I came to understand the impact he had on the genre.

This was a very enjoyable listen - calm and eerie in the right ways. I expected something more "hokey" and was very happy to hear something I would listen to again when I want something more "ambient" but still interesting and with great performances.

interesting.

Very pleasant to work to!

A delight! Great combo of two artists who usually aren't presented in the best setting for my taste but this brings out the best of both.

enjoyed this--felt as if I was at a classical performance.

Really interesting stuff here, though honestly I could not imagine trying to tango to a lot of these songs. Having an accordion and a vibraphone carry the jazz melodies is so intriguing to me

Didn't think I'd end up giving a tango album four stars, but such is life.

Needed to warm up to this album, once it got going though found it to be enjoyable

Overall: 7/10 It's always interesting to me when an album like this pops up in the generator. I usually start out heavily dissapointed that it's not something I already know I'm going to enjoy, and then I end up having a good time anyway. Maybe it helps that I didn't have very high expectations. This music is so fun and strange. I can see it being the score of some romantic comedy where they're travelling through europe. The vibraphone was probably my favourite part, you don't hear that kind of instrument a lot in music. I'm glad I got to listen to this. Fav Song: Laura's Dream Least Fav Song: Little Italy

Tengo music for an hour is wild but it was solid

Banger album. I really liked it. Not at all what I would have thought of tango. Maybe it's the new tango only. But yeah, really enjoyed this one. 4/5

159/1089 - I now understand people's complaints when they say this book is too "eurocentric." The "world music" picks I've gotten so far are very safe and westernized and don't really show a lot of what the different cultures music is about. If the list-makers are going this western with the world music, they might as well cut the middleman and just feature Peter Gabriel and Sting albums (actually they should feature those in general because they're phenomenal musicians!) Anyways, it was alright, very strong classical music influence. Nice to see Gary Burton on the list.

Played while cooking and it was an absolute fancy vibe.

Its really not what i lessen normally to but it is not bad,

liked songs: Milonga Is Coming This was a really cool album. Jazzy, tango-y, untraditional instrumentation, and songs with so much going on but with great melodies anyway. 4.25

Great mood

Astor Piazzola is the most accomplished tango composer in history. He has recorded more than 70 albums under his name, with many more recorded under band names and in various collaborations. His music was also featured in dozens of films. Piazzolla developed the "New Tango" - el Nuevo Tango - that combined elements from jazz and traditional orchestral music into tango. He was a master of the bandoneon, a type of concertina. The New Tango, and an American release, is the first in a series of albums introducing Piazzolla's music to the West. This is a great album, and an introduction to Piazzolla's extensive catalog.

Album has a bit of magic to it, enjoyable instrumentals with some unique moments throughout. Songs have a certain feel to them that can take you places

very interesting album. not something i think i'd want to come back to but it was enjoyable.

Amazingly nuanced...one minute plaintive, the next joyous. Glad I listened

No bad Piazzolla

I’ve had a soft spot for Astor ever since I watched 12 Monkeys in high school. I love the zany sprawl of his bandoneon playing. Really enjoyed this one. I’d still give the edge to his other album, Tango: Zero Hour, but strong output here. I’ve already come back to listen again.

Listens: 1 Standout tracks: Vibraphonissimo I really struggle with the rating system for this platform. At first I was much more conservative with my ratings, but realized about 45 albums in that even some albums that I've highly enjoyed and would even describe as "loved" weren't breaking into 5, and I had only rated a single album a 1. Then I revaluated both my approach and the albums I had listened to, adjusting if necessary, and came up with a Hate/Dislike/Indifferent/Like/Love scale, which has been working so far... I guess. So where does this fall? Is it musically impressive? Yes. Is it enjoyable? So far, for the most part. Do I love or hate it? No and no. Will I add this to my rotation or listen to it beyond today? Probably not. So then what's the rating? Middle of the pack 3? Am I just playing it safe and not really forming an honest opinion? I'm not sure. Sometimes I wish the rating scale was 1 through 10. Some of the tracks so far are wildly inventive and highly creative. One of the tracks gave me the impression of the world coming crashing down around me. Frantic and aggressive, which I would not have come to expect from the genre of Tango. Other tracks are prodding, serious, sombre and thought provoking. I would consider putting something like this on if I were just trying to mellow out after a day at work. I am inclined to say I more enjoy it than not, so.... 4

Super relaxing and nice for my morning. probably for any time except a pitched gun-battle with pink robots but, then, maybe?

A beautiful record, fresh and swinging - an interesting listen

Listening to this feels like I'm playing a video game where I explore Paris. Or like I'm watching a '50s thriller. Honestly I really enjoy it. It's exciting and variable and tense and interesting. This would be the perfect soundtrack for a Tintin video game, which I now very much want to play

Tango is cool but I don't know if I can listen to that much vibraphone

I enjoyed this a lot. It reminded me of some of the little bits in the second Mr Bungle album before some other crazy thing happened. Jazz tango! That’s a new one on me. More of this sort of thing!

Loved this. Will revisit.

This is album features an unusual combination of instruments - a piano, a violin, a vibraphone and a bandoneón (a sort of accordion) - playing avant garde tango music that crosses over into jazz and classical minimalism with repeating patterns and themes. There’s a playful air to this as the violin and bandoneón bounce off each other, picking up on the rhythms established on the vibraphone. Perfect for a sunny day with a cool breeze blowing through the windows.

Definitely not something I'd normally listen to, but this was really good. It did kind of remind me of a soundtrack, and I imagined all kinds of scenarios to match the music. It was a fun listening/visualization exercise.

Muy raro, no es my go-to pero esta muy guapo

Hadn't heard of these guys at all, but this is a banger. Seems like the live albums are finding a lot of success with me atm! Vibraphonissimo particularly good vibes and la muerta del angel. I've been partial to a bit of tango for a while, since discovering Francisco Canaro, but this is a more cerebral variety of tango. I've never got on with more poppy tango or more modern instrumentations, but this is a different variety of cerebral jazzy tango that I can definitely get on board with.

Jumpy, swingy fun stuff. I liked this.

this was super cool. not what i was expecting but pretty good music just to sit with and lightly enjoy

Accordion and Xylophone, what a terrific combo. 8/10

Had no idea what to expect with this, but I absolutely loved it. This was recorded in the 80s, but still sounds fresh as ever, and "La Muerta Del Angel" is one of the best closings to an album I've heard so far. Just an absolutely stunning record.

This is a man with the fingers of an angel. For as long as I've known bandoneon exist I've wanted to be his bandoneon. The way he makes it sing. That could be me. I would wail so good. Ahem. This album had me feeling stuff. Didn't expect to be enjoying this today. So thanks for that, Astor.

Pleasant

who would have thought that marimba and accordion could go so well together! Incredibly live jazz album with a ton of creativity and excitement.

it went from pleasant to listen to, to really interesting and dramatic and sad with lauras dream and operation tango. I would not necessarily own it but it was a really beautiful album

Liked this far more than I expected to, reminiscent is Steve Reich.

Great. I love how much of it obviously inspired japanese composers as many songs sound like they belong in jrpgs.

I don’t know if this is still “new” and I truly don’t know if it’s “tango” either, but the combination of two absolute wizards in musical instruments we don’t get nearly enough of is an absolute blast of an album.

Piazzolla's bandoneon and Mulligan's saxophone engage in an intimate musical dialogue, transporting listeners to a beautiful place where nuevo tango's passionate rhythms mingle magically with cool jazz sensibilities.

71/100. The New Tango: Recorded at the Montreux Festival by Astor Piazzolla & Gary Burton is a good jazz/tango album with a chill, calm, and relaxing atmosphere. It works great as background music, creating a soothing yet engaging ambiance.

Maybe the most classically based album I've heard so far. Really beautiful opening track. My uncle Harvey recommended Gary Burton as he is an excellent vibes player and that shows here for sure. Really interesting melodic jazz. highly skilled. mood setter music for sure.

Good that!

ehkä liian yksitoikkoista viiteen tähteen, mutta varsin rauhoittava tunnelma kuunnella tätä teosta!

Albums with these kinds of streaming numbers are always worrying. My immediate thought was that this surely isn't one of the 1000 most important records of all time – at least, not according to most Spotify users. But dang, this is great. The quirky yet intense music, the rises and falls in energy, the unpredictable twists and turns... these guys, Piazzolla and Burton, they're pretty good. The accordion playing, particularly in the final track, is excellent. It's not often you hear this odd piano-accordion-vibraphone combo with low string backing. Such an odd combination, and it does wonders. The two closing tracks, Operation Tango / La Muerta Del Angel, turn the energy up to an almost Mission Impossible-esque level. I'm also a big fan of Vibraphonissimo for its mind-bending percussion lines. And seemingly played perfectly, too. In a live setting. That's darn impressive. The New Tango would be a 5-star album, no questions... well, except for the fact that it clearly hasn't had a big historical influence since its release. I don't hear elements carried over into post-2005 sounds (at least not with more well-known contemporary musicians). Nor have I ever heard of the artists, Astor Piazzolla and Gary Burton, themselves. That tends to be a bad sign for judging the significance of music in a modern-day context. Because whatever you think about the quality or novelty of some kind of music, the ultimate marker of its importance is how much it changed history. As far as I can tell, the main way The New Tango changed history is by making it into this list. As such, I can't in good conscience give this 5 stars. 4/5 Key tracks: Vibraphonissimo, La Muerta Del Angel

I certainly wasn't sure what to expect but such a delightful album. Faves: Vibraphonissimo, Operation Tango

Chill vibes - serves nicely as background music but awards attention too. Fave tracks - "Vibraphonissimo" and "Laura's Dream" had cool lil atmospheres going on. It's a whole album thing rather than individual tracks, though...

consistently pleasant. high caliber "soundtrack" music.

I’ll be honest from the start: I’m no expert in tango. Though I can recognize the familiar rhythms in a heartbeat, distinguishing the finer points between Nuevo Tango and its traditional counterpart isn't my wheelhouse. That said, even from an outsider’s perspective, the musicianship here is impossible to ignore. Piazzolla blends Argentine folk traditions with improvisational jazz ideas so effortlessly that the boundaries between them start to blur. As the album unfolds, the nuevo tango aspect becomes clear—this isn’t just about reinterpreting tango but expanding its vocabulary entirely. His bandoneón has a freewheeling, almost conversational quality, especially in its exchanges with Gary Burton’s vibraphone. Tracks like "Milonga Is Coming" take their time, starting in a dreamlike haze before building into something expansive and emotionally charged. There’s a slow-burning intensity, a sense that every note is pulling the music forward. On the other hand, “Vibraphonissimo” is all about immediacy and virtuosity, with Piazzolla and Burton bouncing off each other in a way that feels spontaneous yet locked in. The live setting adds an extra layer of unpredictability, making every moment feel alive. Other musicians, including Fernando Suarez Paz (violin), Marcelo Moguilevsky (clarinet), and Horacio Malvicino (electric guitar), flesh out the arrangements beautifully. While Piazzolla and Burton take centre stage, these players weave in and out, adding depth and texture that make the performance feel rich and dynamic. While a live album with minimal rehearsals featuring a vibraphonist might not be the most obvious entry point into Piazzolla or tango, The New Tango left me curious to explore more of his work, leading me to Tango: Zero Hour and Libertango, which are considered key moments in his evolution. This album, in contrast, captures a crucial live document of his restless creativity, with the interplay between Piazzolla and Burton injecting a kinetic, unpredictable energy into the performance. If you’re into boundary-pushing jazz or world music, this is worth hearing. Up until a few hours ago, I couldn’t have told you the difference between a bandoneón and an accordion, or a vibraphone and a xylophone. Now? I can see myself vibing to this a lot more often. Maybe not in the way Piazzolla intended, but hey—music has a way of pulling you in when you least expect it.

danceable

Good shit

Quite enjoyable. I liked it. Easy listening.

who knew that an accordion like sound could be so compelling?

Makes me want to drive through the streets of Italy in a comedy movie 4 baguettes

this is like, the best you can hope for in terms of soundtrack music

Really enjoyable listen! Very dramatic and cinematic, making me feel on edge at times but in like an action movie way. Don't get the genre at all, and while I can't place any of its influence, this at least made me think differently and I appreciated what it made me feel artistically. It was a valuable experience, and a very pleasant one at that.

7/10 This comes out of a complete ignorance to Tango, especially Nuevo Tango, but I was not expecting this at all. On a broader Pop culture level, I was exposed to Tango as a novelty genre for foreign dance music, and seeing “Nuevo Tango” as a stylistic branch in the genre, I was thinking this would be a sort of more contemporary than its orchestral parent. What I did not expect was the weird moments of terror, drama, and eeriness, the more exciting and intense moments of the record almost cut you off from a “Danceable” setting, being much more inspired by Jazz in its composition and dissonance. I feel like I’m watching an elaborate stage play, and it is mostly engaging all the way through. What doesn’t do much for me on this album are the more nuanced and subtle moments on the record, there are many long stretches of the album that feel like quiet instrumental filler preparing you for the real stuff, and although this is probably more known in the genre and I’m just oblivious to it, I found myself wishing these moments would end sooner. If Nuevo Tango is so good why haven’t they made a Mas Nuevo Tango hmmmm????

Mjög ánægjuleg hlustun. Hljóðheimurinn mjög flottur, víbrafónninn tryggir ákveðin ljúfleika, fiðlan kemur með dramatíkina og bandoneonið (á það sér íslenkt heiti) leikur sér á milli. Jazz og tangó eiga svona líka vel saman.

pleasantly surprised with this one. who knew the vibraphone could work so well in tango music? it's a quaint and rather quiet album, ideally suited for elevator or hotel lobby music. i almost feel like this is music that would be present in a new "the sims" entry. it's not winning any awards, sometimes it's a little odd, but it's a generally good jazz album.

## In-Depth Review of *The New Tango* by Astor Piazzolla Astor Piazzolla's *The New Tango* represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of tango music, merging traditional Argentine tango with elements of jazz and classical music. This album showcases Piazzolla's innovative approach to composition and performance, establishing him as a revolutionary figure in the music world. Below, we will explore the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, alongside its pros and cons. ### ****Lyrics Unlike traditional tango music that often emphasizes lyrical storytelling about love, loss, and social issues, *The New Tango* primarily focuses on instrumental compositions. However, Piazzolla’s works are imbued with emotional depth that can be interpreted through their musical narratives. - **Emotional Expression**: The absence of lyrics does not detract from the emotional intensity. The compositions evoke a range of feelings—from nostalgia to passion—through intricate melodies and harmonies. - **Collaboration with Poets**: Piazzolla did collaborate with poets like Horacio Ferrer for some of his other works, such as *María de Buenos Aires*, which illustrates his ability to blend narrative with music. While *The New Tango* itself is largely instrumental, it reflects this lyrical tradition in its emotive power. ### ****Music Piazzolla's music in *The New Tango* is characterized by its complex structures and rich textures. - **Instrumentation**: The album features a quintet format comprising bandoneon (Piazzolla), violin (Fernando Suarez Paz), piano (Pablo Ziegler), guitar (Horacio Malvicino), and double bass (Hector Console). This combination allows for a diverse range of sounds and dynamics. - **Musical Style**: The compositions blend traditional tango rhythms with jazz influences, showcasing improvisation and extended harmonic structures. Piazzolla’s use of counterpoint and dissonance adds layers of sophistication uncommon in traditional tango. - **Key Tracks**: Notable pieces include "Tanguedia III," "Milonga del Angel," and "Contrabajissimo," each demonstrating Piazzolla's mastery in creating tension and release through musical dialogue among instruments. ### ****Production The production quality of *The New Tango* enhances its artistic vision. - **Recording Techniques**: The album was recorded with an emphasis on capturing the live energy of performances, allowing the nuances of each instrument to shine through. The clarity of sound facilitates an immersive listening experience. - **Arrangements**: Piazzolla’s arrangements are meticulously crafted, balancing written scores with opportunities for improvisation. This approach allows musicians to express their individuality while maintaining cohesion within the ensemble. ### ****Themes The themes present in *The New Tango* reflect Piazzolla's broader artistic vision. - **Fusion of Genres**: The album exemplifies the fusion of tango with jazz and classical elements, breaking down barriers between genres. This innovative blend challenges listeners’ perceptions of tango as a static form. - **Cultural Identity**: Piazzolla’s work often grapples with themes of identity—both personal and cultural—as he sought to redefine Argentine tango for contemporary audiences. His compositions reflect a deep connection to his roots while simultaneously embracing global influences. - **Emotional Landscapes**: Each piece can be seen as an exploration of emotional landscapes—capturing moments of joy, sorrow, longing, and celebration that resonate universally. ### ****Influence Piazzolla’s influence extends far beyond the realm of tango music. - **Global Reach**: His work has inspired musicians across genres—including classical, jazz, and world music—leading to a resurgence of interest in tango worldwide. - **Legacy**: Piazzolla is credited with establishing nuevo tango as a legitimate genre that continues to evolve today. His innovative spirit has paved the way for future generations of musicians who seek to blend traditional forms with contemporary styles. - **Cultural Significance**: In Argentina, Piazzolla's music has become emblematic of a modern cultural identity that embraces both tradition and innovation. His compositions are frequently performed in concert halls around the world, illustrating their enduring appeal. ### ****Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Innovative Sound**: The fusion of genres creates a fresh and engaging listening experience that appeals to diverse audiences. - **Emotional Depth**: The instrumental nature allows listeners to interpret emotions personally without the constraints of lyrics. - **Technical Mastery**: The musicianship displayed in each track highlights the virtuosity of the performers, making it a showcase for talent. #### Cons - **Accessibility**: Some listeners may find the complexity and lack of lyrics challenging or less relatable compared to more traditional forms of tango or popular music. - **Niche Appeal**: While innovative, the genre may not appeal to purists who prefer traditional tango forms without jazz or classical influences. In summary, *The New Tango* by Astor Piazzolla is a landmark album that redefined tango music through its innovative blend of styles and emotional depth. Its instrumental focus allows for rich interpretations while showcasing technical mastery from all involved musicians. Despite some accessibility challenges for traditionalists or casual listeners, its influence on both Argentine culture and global music is undeniable. This work remains an essential listening experience for anyone interested in the evolution of contemporary music forms.

Not what I usually listen to, but I definitely appreciated this neovo tango music.

This falls under the category of objectively damn good, but subjectively I'd rather be listening to something else. I will give extra credit for being a live performance though; those don't always translate on record.

Cool intro to tango-very atmospheric. Parisian feel?

It was like being in a pretentious indie film. Pretty cool

Enjoyable enough; nice and jumpy and obviously for its purpose. Proper dancing music. Honestly surprised for some reason how much I enjoyed the instruments used - particularly the xylophone and accordion. Can’t say that was ever expected. It’s wild that this is live.

Part of the joy of listening to these albums is getting exposed to types of music I wouldn't have otherwise. This is tango album #1! Honestly, it sounds great. The vibraphone, the sliding strings, the piano, the... bandoleon? Yeah! Sometimes slow and soothing, sometimes frantic and discordant, always a vibe. Fav tracks: Milonga Is Coming, Vibraphonissimo, Laura's Dream

This is good and unique. I really hope I have something interesting to say about the next one.

Can't see myself returning to this any time soon, but some wonderful moments and some immense talent on display.

First song reminded me of the Neighborhood of Make Believe due to the heavy xylophone usage. I could just be mis-remembering that though. A pretty pleasant listen, lots of good instruments playing in harmony in some less typical ways.

Sumptuous tango tones rife with bending notes, dissonance, Burton’s vibes. Lush.

I had such a good listening experience with this album that I just let Spotify suggested take the reins for like two hours after. Great music to work to. I’d hoped there’d be more albums of this unique variety when I first got into this list

Album 592 of 1001 Astor Piazzolla - The New Tango (1987) Rating : 4 / 5 Great live album from "an Argentinian tango composer and bandoneon player in collaboration with a renowned vibraphonist". Soothing start to the day.

Discovering oddities like this, which I would otherwise never come across, is undoubtedly the best thing about this project No one is coming up to me at work and asking ‘hey, have you heard that live album with the Argentinian tango composer and bandoneon player with an acclaimed vibraphonist?’ I do not care about your kids. I did not see the game last night. I implore you, please tell me why you think this is one of the most virtuosic and emotionally resonant recordings of the 80s

Nice background music.

3.5 ish! This was cool.
