Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Mixed feelings on this. Parts sound like the soundtrack to a Mafia movie, parts sounds like the coolest jazz band ripping the vibraphone and then parts feel like being a lift. Torn between a 3 and a 4, but I’m going to be harsher with my marking.

Great musicianship but this shit is really not my bag at all

Very cute. Not my thing, but exciting background noise for something, I’m sure. Could be a beautiful movie soundtrack.

Interesting choice that I never would have picked on my own, especially based upon n the cover. I actually quite enjoyed it. The xylophone and accordion had a perfect balance.

didnt really get it. Flashes of brilliance but a lot of vibrophone i think its called? I hope there is a more cohesive album of his on this list tbh NNN

Some beautiful music, but was a little boring at times. Wished there just a little more excitement. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

Don’t know my new tango from my old tango but quite liked this one

I really liked the first tune. It made me feel like I was in a dinner club in the 1940's. I wore a white tuxedo and my dame wore a nice evening dress. I enjoyed this album. Not something that will be in regular rotation though.

I think I like tango in general, and this album was nice enough, but nothing about it really grabbed me. I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to elevator music or hold music, but I must admit the thought occurred to me…

Tónleikaplata sem virkar.

Where’d they record this? The Snooze Fest? BOOYAH!

This was a difficult one to rate. I do quite like this nuevo tango thing and remember enjoying the albums Tristeza de un Doble A and Zero Hour. This live album was a mixed bag for me, though. When in the right mood, I enjoyed it a lot, but other times some of the faster virtuoso bits were getting on my nerves and I wanted to turn it off.

fancy music

Inevitably, there will be albums in this challenge that not only push me outside my comfort zone, but beyond my depth of knowledge and comprehension. The New Tango is the first album I've encountered so far that makes me feel this way. I know nothing about Tango, so how could I begin to appropriately appreciate the New Tango? If this were still 2009 and my 1997 Toyota Corolla stick-shift was still kicking, and I had this stuck in the CD player connected to the tape deck until I bothered to pry it out, I could see this growing on me. There's clear talent on display here, that's obvious. The more this leans into jazz, the more I enjoy it. Burton's talents as a vibraphonist are captivating, and "Vibraphonissimo" is a clear stand-out. I also like the energy of "Nuevo Tango," which is where I think Piazzolla brings the biggest jazz influence for himself. However, the rest of this album feels dependent on either a smooth jazz element or classical elements. And I’m as unfamiliar with those sounds as I am the tango. And maybe it’s my unfamiliarity with those genres, but the whole thing felt very melodramatic in a way I find disengaging and uninteresting. The fact that these moments eclipse the avant-garde, the jazz, and even the virtuosity of Piazzolla and Burton both, as well as the backing band, feels like noteworthy sticking points. Even the violin is louder in the mix than Piazzolla, which feels counterintuitive. I wonder, if I were to see a video of this performance, would I be swayed? Do I just need to revisit this later? I sat with this for a few days, trying to revisit it and feeling unable to ever feel the desire to even want to examine it and sink my teeth in, and I think that’s the root of my issue with this album. It’s not that I don’t understand its importance or its compositional brilliance, it’s just that, really, this is not the sort of album I enjoy. It’s not one I’d revisit aside from trying to continue to “get it,” but it also seems like it’s not the album that’s going to sway me to enjoy this style of music any time soon, though it does as much as I think any album could to get me to the line. But here I am, still at the line, and my honest reaction is apathy and respect, nothing more.

Hated listening to this at work. Anxiety inducing lol

Not gonna be my favourite but the man is talented wow

Holy shit list...this is way too jazz adjacent for me to enjoy...yet I did. You're changing meeee

what happened to old tango

El tango no es lo mío. Tampoco el nuevo tango, pero aprecio que esté en la lista.

A good listen to get exposure to a genre I'm really not familiar with (tango). Nothing objectionable, but it doesn't really light a fire in my heart or feet.

very nice and jazzy but nothing extraordinary tbh

What a little jewel this is! Extremely pleasant and jolly.

The music is really good at what it's trying to be, undeniable talent and skill. I like the classical. I love the tango. The jazz has its place but adds a lot of bloat. 7/10 I had a good time

Some nice sounds

some really moving and beautiful instrumental music

a new one! very cool very chill. great vibes to this as well as great musicianship

This album made me realize I have no idea what tango is. Neat display of musicianship, but not something for the regular listening rotation. More performance theater, maybe. Fav tracks: Nuevo Tango, Operation Tango

I know it's important music....I just don't like it

I felt like I was watching a French movie the whole time. It was really good musicianship, but I doubt I’ll come back to it anytime soon.

One of those albums where the performance is impressive but I felt emotionally distanced from it. There are moments of playfulness & fun during the tango, but of course this is New Tango, which sometimes flattens out the quirky, idiosyncratic rhythms with more atmospheric, noodly passages. (No love lost to the opening track, even though it's an odd choice to begin the album). This may be the best vibraphone showcase in 1100 albums, so I have to shout that out at least. HL: "Little Italy", "Operation Tango", "Milonga is Coming" February 27, 2024

Fora album koji vjerojatno nikad vise necu poslusati.

One of the Tango Goats releases an album that is interesting enough to entertain a non tango aficionado

Mystical, enchanting tunes for a thin, sickly boy

It was OK. Felt a little dated, but inoffensive. Decent background music.

Very relaxing pleasant sounding live recording No reason to never revisit this. I’m sure I’ll hear it as a movie soundtrack or something. Three stars I suppose. Not something i NEEDED to hear.

*applauds politely* good crocheting music!

Some vibraphone action.. Not often do you see that. Nice jazzy tunes overall, missing some of the tango energy I think. Also not often I listen to a master of ...bandoneon. 2.5 (rounded up for respect).

Xylophone jazz. 3/5

At first I was like, aw this is nice. But then I was like- is someone playing Super Mario Bros ?

Well, understandably on the 1001 list, but not my taste.

This was an enjoyable listen.

it seems unfair to give this a 4 because ill probably never listen to it again but it was a very nice listen i give it the highest of 3s

The music ripples along. If you're looking for something to relax, this is the right album.

Overall I liked it, not really my style.

Some really beautiful moments in this, especially from the strings, but overall not really for me

I thought tango was supposed to be upbeat dance music, so this didn’t really match my expectations. As it went on I started to appreciate it more for what it is. Astor is really good at transitioning from quiet chill vibes to exciting, so you don’t even notice it’s happening until it happens, which is kinda cool. Still wanted more dance though. 6.5/10

Sounds kinda like elevator music 6/10

I didn’t dislike this. It went by fairly quick and was entertaining. Its not something i would seek out to listen to, but it wasn’t bad at all

I must say I'm not a big fan of the Accordion. The rest of the instrumentation I like.

Sounds like Professor Layton and some other videogame music. Really nice. Dramatic.

¿Cómo puede estar esto grabado en directo? ¡Qué bien suena desde el principio! Milonga is coming, Vibraphonissimo, ...

I'm not familiar with the nuances of the new tango genre, so I'm just giving surface level listening opinions. I liked the tempo changes from fast vibraphone to slow violin. Sounded nice.

i liked it, but didn't really stand out to me. good music for working/browsing web. 3.3 / 5

Definitely an album made to appeal to diehard tango fans. But no one can deny the musical proficiency on display here.

Not my fav, need to came back later

This is what I came here to hear. A totally new genre, I doubt I'll ever listen to it again but I can see why some people would

Not something I'll revisit, but I can appreciate it

Beautiful and relaxing. 1987 Standouts: Operation Tango, La Muerta del Angel 3.5

Stolen gypsy music

Поздравляю: вы стали дедом!

для себя: танговая шиза

Not the worst thing I ever heard

Not a style of music I'm familiar with. Would love to dive deeper into it, and give this some more spins. Very pleasant record.

Not generally what I’d listen to, but I liked it enough to listen to the whole thing

Ik weet het niet, ik vond sommige liedjes mooi, maar het album als geheel was niet per se voor mij denk ik

I don't know anything about tango but of course I've already heard Astor Piazzolla's name. It's a tight, virtuoso live tango album, which sounded really good quality to me. I enjoyed this album; too bad the album I've found on youtube had some muted minutes which disturbed my experience of listening the album. Perhaps I'll listen to it again later.

Þvílík dramatík. Ég held ég myndi þurfa að dansa tangó til að njóta í botn en þetta var samt ekkert leiðinlegt. Djassfílingur en hef samt ekki hlustað jafn mikið á tango óg ég hef djass.

this crowd goes hype over anything lol. these guys are good tho, great show. Not a fan of the jarring stabs in nuevo tango. The accordion in these final tracks is kinda losing me...a little grating on the ears.

Hah - this was fun. Not my usual cup of tea, but great to have on in the background while I was working.

some great musicianship here, especially some top-tier vibraphone playing. however, i feel that even though the musicianship is high, the music itself is not quite for me. i felt this one was a bit middle of the road. pleasant and nice enough, but not quite to the level of 'interesting' for me.

Pretty okay album, definitely not a music genre I would listen to, but it was quite entertaining and interesting. Very different from all the other albums on the list so far as well.

Tango, nuevo tango.

Vibraphonissimo was like a symphony in my ears! I love the sound of vibraphones, Gary Burton really nailed that performance. The style of music was uplifting, but not one I'd return to regularly. Glad to have experienced it!

well, this was an unexpected one i would put this in the "lobby music" genre, but it was relatively enjoyable! 3* but not a pretty 3*

They’re certainly skilled artists, but this music is just not for me

Perfectly fine background music. Listened to this a few days before Halloween, so I enjoyed the sort of spooky sounding stuff.

Cool but not really my thing

I mean, it’s pretty music. Not life changing but nice.

It’s like listening to the soundtrack of an Argentinian film noir without getting to watch the movie…But the soundtrack is great.

Best tango I ever heard.

It's good for what it is but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it tbh

It was interesting and i am sure it is well made but i dont think its for me

Some songs like the first one have a very nice vibe. Others are way way too random

Very interesting album. Bit weird at times but I like the energy and emotions involved

Surprisingly tasty. I don't think I would just throw it on, but some of the songs will be in regular background rotation.

This is not your grandparents' tango, and who knew that some accordion looking instrument could create music so smooth and cool. I'm sure it helps that Burton's vibraphone chops show through it's Piazzolla's arrangements that ties it all together. Although a bit same at times, this is very pleasant stuff, thank you.

Some nice enjoyable jazz style music. Not my bad but perfectly enjoyable

Couldn’t find this so three stars to average it out.

Tango. Algo disonante

I think they are talented musicians that have crafted unique music. However I found it underwhelming and boring to listen to. Nothing exciting really drew me in. I didn’t hate it but it’s not something that I’d regularly choose to listen to.

Per Wikipedia bio: [Piazzolla’s] disappointment of being forbidden [by his father] to join the tour proved to be fortunate, as it was on this tour in 1935 that Gardel and his entire orchestra perished in a plane crash. I’ll remember this anecdote when needing to discourage someone from following their dreams.

Not my kind of thing, although it sounds like the audience absolutely loved it! I'm not even sure what genre to put it in - jazz, classical, pure tango, something else - never mind what rating to give it. Pleasant enough, even if I don't really get it.

6/10. Pleasant while I was paying attention to it, and inoffensive when I wasn't.

Not too bad I like instrumentals the vibraphone was good leaning towards 3.5/5

This album was interesting if not a bit long. I'm not familiar with tango, but did notice that there were classical and jazz forms incorporated into the tango. I really enjoyed the use of marimba throughout as well as the bandoneon, an instrument that I was not previously familiar with. After some reading, it appears that Astor Piazzolla was the father of the new tango as featured on this album.

What an oddball album. A quirky instrumentalist album, but it happens to be live. You wouldn't know it if not for the applause after each song. I definitely enjoyed a few tracks, many of these are long musical odysseys, just played with a xylophone and other oft-forgotten old timey feeling instruments. Not mad at this at all. Favorite tracks: Vibraphonissimo, Little Italy, Laura's Dream. Album art: Purely descriptive, an explanation of what the album is and a picture of the two namesake guys I guess. The opposite of creative. 3.5/5

Occasionally challenging, but surprisingly delightful! Today is the day I learned I like the vibes. Fave Songs: Little Italy, Laura's Dream, Vibraphonissimo, Nuevo Tango

Will I listen again? No. Did I learn a lot? Yes.

Sounds sharp, well instrumented, creative song structures. I don't know why I want something more from this.

Not bad. good background jams

Someone pointed out to me that Jazz is a medium that can only be performed live. I disagree. They can still record it in a studio. This is interesting. Reminds me of North by Northwest. But live albums don't belong on this list.

Interesting, but not something i'd really listen to again. What sounds like a xylophone is unusual to me to be such a critical featured instrument through this entire performance. Cool and unusual for me.

I prefer Finnish tango.

Tango, nuevo tango.

Weird. Odd. Sounded a bit like chase music. But good for it’s type I guess.

Retour à l'usine...

j’ai presque voulu mettre 4

Cool stuff.

Really not my thing, but more enjoyable than I would have anticipated

I find it hard to rate because it's not my kind of thing but I do like having the odd more classical thing pop up on here. Don't really have any strong opinions on it to be honest.

Totaal nieuw voor mij, maar tot mijn eigen verbazing kon ik het goed hebben.

Ik heb een groot zwak voor Piazzolla.

Dit kende ik dus nog helemaal niet. Mooi hoor. Houd sowieso wel van de tango.

Not my thing Pleasant enough, nothing special IMO

Fantastic performances. Not the kind of thing I would have chosen to listen to—and it really wasn't what I wanted to hear today—but it kind of won me over. Sounds like the opening theme song for a PBS quirky mystery. So that's cool. I don't, however, think it's something I'm going to be reaching for again. This is one of those albums where rating it seems silly. Glad I heard it. Glad it's on the list. They're amazing performers. Three stars, just 'cause?

This album is obviously not in my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed listening to this. I really appreciated the dramatic feel, complexity, and occasional odd-meter. Even though I’m not a fan of Argentinian accordion, I recognised the talent that went into this performance.

Sounds like a Wes Anderson car chase. And not in a bad way.

Another good example of not judging by the cover. I really did expect to hate this but Piazzolla and Burton won me over. There’s good moments of frantic anxious energy on this and others of calming

Relative to the combo and venue, the set plays much like a Romantic string concert. Each piece integrates tango with other musics; The band plays precisely, with just a few explosions of noise. This album is one to sit with.

Rena rama restaurangmusiken. Ganska skön platta men i ärlighetens namn, hör skivan hemma verkligen på listan?

Even the crowd didn't come across as hyped. Solid music, won't listen again thoug,

Soort van modern klassieke tangomuziek. Niet heel chill voor luisteren bij studeren maar wel muzikaal.

Yet another in the ever-growing list of examples of why I am so grateful for this project. I must admit that were someone to have described this album to me or if I read a quick description of it, I would have been reluctant to give it a listen. But it works. It works really, really well. I hear an inventive and creative use of various instruments coming together in compositions and performances with nuance, energy, playfulness, depth, darkness, and some truly incredible skills. It's a great listen. Thank you, 1001 Albums Generator -- you done did it again! :-)

Surprisingly great

I’m torn between 3 and 4. It’s a fantastic performance—a lot of talent, no question. But i feel like it’s only something I would listen to as background music and not something I would actively enjoy.

loved the guitar, percussions, flute and piano. The bandoneon was highlighted too much for me but I guess that is culturally preferred in Tango.

I enjoyed this, but I have no good reference point. How does this compare to other tango? I wouldn't know. How is this "neuvo"? I wouldn't know. But I need to give it a rating as part of the project, so I'm going to just give it a three. (That's not completely fair to the record, but it's not like I have zero reference points. I can't see this being a two star or five star, so that leaves me with three or four. Since I didn't love it, I'm giving it a three.)

I can't rate it fairly. I have no idea if it's good or not due to being a complete laymen in this genre. It's not for me but at no fault of the album

don't know what I expected but was not this. not my kind of music but enjoyed nonetheless, these men love their xylophones

Would play at a dinner party. I know nothing about tango, but great for background. I was in and out as necessary. Not to generalize, but there were some fun, funky sounds I didn't recognize that make me want to listen again. A little spooky here, a little light there.

You can tell the crowd was loving this shit. This was a very interesting ride full of fiddle glissandos, dinnertime vibraphone by Mr. Burton, and an awesome bandoneón performance by one Astor Piazzolla. I am not entirely sure why this is included in the list but I'm not particularly peeved about it. It so very close to being good dinner music but there is something a little too "jazzy" about it for me to put it on while, say, my girlfriend and I eat dinner. I know she would not like the little atonal spots. Anyway, where this music falls in my future listening environments is neither here nor there. I enjoyed this record. I'm far from being a jazz guy so I can't speak to much of the specifics of the who's who or why or how but I can talk about what I felt about the performance in general. The performers really feel like they're telling some sort of a story. Like the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. I felt these little moments of falling in love, trepidation, exuberance. Nice vignettes. It was pleasant, there was emotion that I could feel, and the performers were clearly on top of their game. For me personally this is a 3 but I have no doubt this is a 5 for the jazzheads out there.

Awesome! Not too much to say, the musicianship is super tight here from almost all angles; technical ability, composition, expression, recording quality, etc. I'm not sure I heard a single missed note. I was trying to approach the accordion as a genre-less instrument to get an objective take on this album, but I don't think I was successful: this album sounds super duper French (or at least European). I kept picturing some sort of Pixar- or Dreamworks-produced 3D animated movie to pair with the music. I appreciated that while the compositions were super creative, and at times harmonically and rhythmically complex, the whole album still has a parsable tango rhythm and beat. Great album, didn't shake my soul or anything but I enjoyed the listen.

Really enjoyed this listen! Dark hallways of deception and intrigue come to mind. Music for when you’re plotting your next palatial overthrow. But then again; when has the vibraphone not had that… vibe? 3/5

I listened all through once, and that was enough. It wasn't unpleasant but I don't need to listen again. Probably 2*

A few interesting tracks, but not great.

The playing is obviously top notch, and these tango meets jazz meets classical compositions are cool and all. But I just can’t get down with vibes and accordion as lead instruments. I’ve heard better jazz, I’ve heard better classical. But ain’t nothing really wrong with this.

As ever with improvisation, I'd rather they went back to these (admittedly fairly good) ideas and tried to refine them into tighter tunes. Still, interesting instruments and some nice bits on here

Tango is a new one for me. Lots of this sounds like 20th century classical, with that Stravinsky shrieking violin doing it's fingernail down the chalkboard work. That aside there is some real interest here, clearly musicians at the top of their game.

let's see. hard to top my FOLK FOR FOCUS. the first song is almost seamless, but with jarring other instruments in there. so glad it's wordless.

Ágætis rólegheit.

Nice to be exposed to non-popular music, especially unconventional sounds from different parts of the world, but this album just didn’t sound like music, but more like sound effects for an unnerving part of a movie or video game.

Out of all non-popular music styles, Tango probably is the least suited one for pure listening. Not a necessary great experience

Musically, spotless. Virtuosity is everywhere and the quality of the performances is great. However after a while it gets heavy.

That was a fun listen of two great musicians

Nice background music

I'm sure I'd enjoy this in a live setting with a whiskey sour in hand but right now I'm mowing the yard and this is not getting me in the mower zone

Expecting bold tango, got quiet tinkle.

Probably better than the 3 stars I'm giving it; I'm just not in the mood for this style of music today.

It was fine for picking or when I was driving tired. Other than that pretty boring.

Do you like tango, bandoneon, and piano? Do you want to feel like you are in a 1940s detective almost film noir set in Argentina? Then this album is for you. Not really my thing, but it wasn't a chore to listen.

Excellent, excellent background. Transporting background. Not interested in listening to this closely, but would never turn it off in the background.

Tango er en nesten helt ukjent sjanger for meg, men jeg liker veldig godt trekkspillets plass i sjangeren som spenner ifra romantisk klassisk til jazz. Kule greier!

Gary Burton’s playing is so precise he is like a machine. Interesting pairing with an accordion.

This was different but didn’t really capture me the same way other instrumental albums have. Glad it’s on the list but not my personal taste.

Chulo pero no es mi estilo

I quite like this, very cinematic, feels like the sound track to a thriller. I only got half way through on day one though and I don’t really have much desire to revisit it to finish it off.

Not what I expected from a live Tango album. This was a pleasant listen, and I could get into what merits it's inclusion on this list opposed to other Tango albums. But I'll sit back and enjoy this one for now. 3.5/5.

This is something I dig. But I like tango so no surprises there and this is just really well arranged and played.

Such a cool and fresh undertaking of tango with a wild combination of instruments. Definitely not going to be a regular play but I'm much better for having heard this

The album is entirely instrumental. It was good instrumental music. I wouldn't describe any of the music as iconic or really memorable. It was alright. I wouldn't pick to listen to this again but I didn't mind it.

Banging vibes and concertina thing, weird little percussion noises in the background. Surprisingly interesting and varied overall. Good background 60s party music.

Jazz meets Tango. I'm not a fan of both these genres. While I enjoyed the first track quite a bit, i found the second one unbearable - seems I'm not a fan of the vibraphone either. But this pattern continues somewhat - some tracks are really OK, others are Jazz (with a capital J) for the sake of it; rambling on much too long without strucure or aim. At least the Montreux audience seemed to like it. For me it was a mixed bag. 2.5/5

I am not well versed enough in tango or Nueva tango or music theory to properly rate this, but it def has evocative beautiful moments, but was a little meandering 🤷

Verra pleasant

A bit of a hard one to judge. I don't listen to tango music very often... or at all I guess. It has a movie scoring vibe to it, which I guess is kinda fitting as it just played in the background. I thought tango was about dancing? This would be hard to keep time to, surely. Was hard to discern a beat a lot of the time. 3/5 for at least being something new to me.

I feel left wanting more from this album.. not in terms of length, but of ideas. There’s a lot of really interesting grooves and bits and pieces on here, but they end up being fleeting and quickly turn back to something more mundane. 5/10

The first track is a little slow and seem like they don't actually want to start. Meditative, reflective. I like the use of dissonance during the whole thing, "Vibraphonissimo"

It's an okay background listen.

VIBIN (get it?) to what I assume has been used as the soundtrack to a quirky indie movie at least once

Rating: 6/10

Gary Burton is a magician on the vibes. This was a long album but an album where it’s mostly background music for working.

Best Song: Nuevo Tango. Very uptempo, jazzy tango. Not what I imagined tango to be. Worst Song: Little Italy. An alright song that has its moments, but overstays its welcome with an overly long, slowly diminishing outro. Overall: Some much appreciated diversity in this list, even if it isn't music to which I would typically listen. Still, I will definitely consider it for background working or dinner music.

Fun instrumental. Great background music.

What was wrong with the old tango? I don’t have enough of a frame of reference to properly rate this album. Maybe the tango jazz scene had grown stale and adding a vibraphone changed the genre forever? I don’t know. I feel like this kind of concert can be heard multiple times yearly at our North Sea Jazz festival. This is not a diss, the musicians are obviously great, but this does not feel like an essential album.

eh, a little too repetitive for me

There's not really anything wrong with this, it's just almost completely uninteresting to me. Can't give it a 1, but I can't really give it higher than a 2 either. It's like being on the phone listening to hold music for an hour.

All a bit smooth - no edge won't be returning to but respect

This is my album 376 in the project. What occurred to me as I was playing this record is that I have become a much more critical listener thanks to doing this exercise. Just this week there were two albums (Ziggy Stardust and Court and Spark) from artists I've never cared for in the past, but really enjoyed as I payed more attention than I had. And there was a Little Richard album that I'd have been certain I'd love, and I found it good but not that great. This is an album I think I would have really liked a lot more early on in this project, but at this point it wasn't as revolutionary sounding as it would've been back then. I found myself skipping ahead, as I was bored with the playing. There was talent there, but I just didn't care enough to listen. A couple of the up tempo songs were better, but they mostly meandered. My only other thought is that nuevo tango isn't really danceable, is it?

I am definitely not a tango fan, so I don’t have high hopes for this one as I get started. Of course, this record promises a NEW tango, so maybe I’ll be surprised. Nope, still sucks. Admittedly, this was not at all what I expected; there were more xylophones (or something) involved than I would have ever conceived of for this sort of music, but I did not really enjoy my time here. 4/10

honk shoe

It's like Prince of Persia music or a bad disney movie.

It’s nice background Latina jazz music.

Ohkeeeee 🤷‍♂️

Whoever invented the vibraphone should spend eternity having tiny little nails hammered into their skull. Because that's what their instrument feels like It's doing to me.

On the one hand, I want to commend Robert for stepping out of the extreme Anglo-bubble he'd have us believe is the only music worth listening to... On the other hand, this really isn't the most riveting alternative to suggest... While I didn't outright hate it (high praise, indeed, for any live album), I also can't say I felt particularly connected to it, either. The xylophone and accordion can be fun supporting instruments, but to have them be the stars for an hour? Yikes. In a normal world, I'd have failed this, but I can't stress enough how much I appreciate not having to listen to another subpar psychedelic, progressive, country rando act Robert just happened to pull outta his rolodex. Though, in all honestly, this does feel more like a token representative of an obscure genre than an actual "must hear" experience.

I prefer the old tango.

No fav song

Naw. Not my music

fuck outta here with this

This is what plays during the boss level of an Italian fever dream video game

Oh, what's this? I had no idea that Gary Burton and Astor Piazzolla had made an album together. It's a live recording from July 1986 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which was released a year later. The album is made up of pieces by Astor Piazzolla, but "Vibraphonissimo" was written especially for Gary Burton. As the album title suggests, this is Piazzolla's typical Tango Nuevo. But with Gary Burton on vibraphone – with Pablo Ziegler on piano, Fernando Suárez Paz on violin, Hector Console on double bass and Horacio Malvicino on electric guitar – it sounds a lot less irritating than the 'original sound' of Tango Nuevo, which I just can't get into and which normally bores me to tears. But for those of us who weren't convinced by Tango Nuevo before, this album is probably going to feel a bit samey and even a bit tiring at times. Fans of the genre will definitely find something they like in Piazzolla's discography. So, my rating is based on what I personally like; fans should definitely check this out. It's a real milestone. I'm just not interested in it at all.

This tested my patience a LOT. It started off pretty exciting and refreshing, but this isn't exactly the most lively improvisation to me. It does well for an ambient purpose but I can't say I enjoyed paying attention to everything. Sort of exhausting to listen to and not in a "nice" way.

Like going to a children’s music recital and the band is much better, but your kid isn’t playing.

Can appreciate the art but that's it

Nothing wrong with the old tango. Lots wrong with the new tango.

Appreciated this but not really my jam

Chill background music gave me a little Mr Rogers vibe, perhaps something you might hear while you watched a video of something being made.

Um, it started out more promising than it ended. If I could give this a 1.5 I would.

Appreciate is not the same as enjoy. Do I appreciate this? Sure. Did I enjoy this? A few moments, sure, but another disappointing inclusion. 2/5

I don’t know enough about tango or bandoneon to properly comment in this, but this guy had so many albums (looked like in the 100s when I was trying to find this exact recording) and did this president close to the end of his career. But I didn’t love listening to this and time did move very slowly

At times beautiful. At times tension filled. At times almost mysterious. And yet at times as if I was in an endless loop of having to watch the Lawrence Welk show. I can recognize the talent here, but not sure this one is list worthy.

This should probably be rated higher. Most respectable musicians. But just not for me. Is that a xylophone? Sounds too much like a nursery rhyme and this just doesn’t feel like an “album” to me. Probably my own mental block. 2.5

Like any red-blooded American, my knowledge of tango begins and ends with that one scene in True Lies. And none of these tunes are as fire as that. 2.5/5

Obviously the result of great musicality and skill, but man I found this cloying and difficult to enjoy. If I was in the room hearing this live I could see myself falling asleep. I feel bad saying this because, again, these are clearly talented musicians, but listening to this felt like checking a box. But the crowd seemed to like it!

such a different type of music 🙂 i had never heard this type of thing before!! cool but not my style, im always happy to listen to different thing tho! nice experience

I can appreciate the talent but I did not need to hear this before I die.

You just know this absolutely crushed at an intellectual dinner party in the 90s

This is very much a "not for me." It's probably fantastic for those who enjoy this. I do not.

I was excited to listen to a tango album, but when I heard that the music on this album sounds like the dingly polyphonic ringtones from the time before smartphones, my excitement waned. I agree the musicians are very talented here, but the listening experience was full of suffering nonetheless.

Lots of accordion and vibraphone, and sounds a lot like jazz to me. The music was a bit slow and moody for me, but it would be pretty good as background music.

Dit is een genre die ik niet veel luister en daarom ook moeilijk vind om te beoordelen. Het album heeft mij verder niet overtuigd om meer van dit album te luisteren. Het is veel van het zelfde en ik vond het niet heel spannend

Not my taste.

That felt like it would never end. How is this on the list?

Smooth but uneventful

Alexa play New Wave Hot Dogs by Yo La Tengo. **Now playing: The New Tango by Astor Piazzolla.** Enjoyed the first song, the rest I just don’t know if I needed in my life. Started giving me anxiety by the end.

🤷‍♂️ I find it incredibly difficult to have an opinion on this background music, it's very well performed? My brain is actively filtering it out while I listen to it.

Lately I've been in a hurry in the mornings and I'm behind on doing my ratings so I have to get to my albums by launching spotify from the link on the 'Reviews' page. A downside of this approach is that I see the global average review so far. I worry seeing this hovering in the higher 2's tainted my listening. I thought of that while listening but putting it aside I felt like I was listening to a score for a cartoon that I couldn't see. The album was a live recording and the audience would cheer and applaud at times that didn't seem notable to me as a listener. I don't have any context for this album at all. Listening to it on it's intrinsic sonics and nothing else was not a very interesting listen for me.

Perfectly pleasant listening. Reminiscent of the design screen in The Sims and some battle sequences in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Not sure it’s entirely for me though.

A fun instrumental. Enjoyed it but wouldn't be something I'd reach for again. Fun note: I've been hearing the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 soundtrack lately and it hit a lot of the same sounds.

Not my cake att all jazz with Tango and especially live

Well-crafted music with some interesting moments, just not to my taste.

I remember getting Astor piazola for a Spanish 3 project. The other group got the tough dude that sings por una cabeza and is like Hispanic frank Sinatra while I got this dude with the accordion and a crash out for a partner, urgh! As for the album, this is a xylophones wet dream right here mixed with some like creepy crawleys. If you listen hopefully you’ll understand but tbh I’m not a big fan. It’s a little weird and I can’t see me ever throwing this on in the background as it’s just to out there.

When I saw a man with an accordion on the album cover, I thought this was going to be right up my alley. I've never used this term in my life, but I think this album was a little too avant-garde, even for me.

I liked parts of it but ultimately not my thing

It would be fine if it were not for the xylophone.

What was wrong with The Old Tango?

Outside my comfort zone here - enjoyed some of the darker broody moments and interplay but then they lost me with noodly bits and overly repetitive themes.

Some was ok but too much sounded like background music in a kids tv show. Annoying kids tv show.

Didn't listen to all of it. Going out

Sadly this is just not for me. I can appreciate the ability but I would just never choose to listen to this album again.

Oh là jingle jangle it's a Fool's Spring's Christmas in Paris!

A little too long and rambly, but a nice change of pace

When tango is the vibe

I need a pretentious drink and pipe as I relax in my slippers in my reclining chair as the elevator music plays on and I get lost in a world of underground clubs.

This is for live at montreux version. I am unsure how to judge this- I don’t know anything about tango or what would make this distinctive or new. It is interesting in the sense of mastery of niche instruments and live performance skill. I enjoyed it in that sense but it didn’t grab me.

This goes hard on mute 🔥🔥

"Tango" had my attention, but this wasn't quite what I was hoping for. I learned that "new tango" is definitely a thing, and it's a different thing from just "tango". This was a lot more experimental and had progressive elements...things I really didn't care to hear. I was looking for that pure tango passion, and this just felt more tedious. Elements of it were pretty, and ultimately the album was intriguing, but not that enjoyable of a listen for me.

hmm, the day after "Clube Da Esquina" by Milton Nascimento. Maybe a little too much international elevator music in a row. Enjoy the violin, not enamored with whatever the xylophone-ish (bandoneon?) instrument is. To me, not a sound that needs to be foregrounded. I don't hate that it's on the list, it is unique and interesting. Happy when I get albums that I don't know and are representative of different traditions. Aside: 58 albums in and I have not gotten a hip-hop album, how? Best I can do here is 2 stars. No interest in listening again. Wouldn't be mad if it was playing in the background while I sit and watch people go by at a Paris sidewalk cafe, otherwise not interested.

A nice album if you want something low playing in the background. Nice live performance

I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it much either.

Listened Before? N Tango... an interesting choice for this list. I didn't hate it, but it evoked memories of easy-listening stations my mother would put on in the 80s... or literal elevator music. Not really my thing. It IS impressive that it was recorded live. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Nuevo Tango

First track was calm and pleasing to the ears. The rest, not so much.

A bit too 'samey' for me. I wasn't paying much attention and found it difficult to discern how each track was different to other tracks. A lot sounded very much like music for crazy car chases in cartoons. Not for me.

Boring but in the right setting maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Just tough to listen to a full album of this.

this was surprisingly better than it would have thought

There was some impressive instrument playing but I can’t imagine this being very influential. There’s not much to latch onto.

I can appreciate the talent and musicianship, but not really my thing. 2.5/5 for my taste.

Switzerland if an album Yoghurt if an album Egg shell white if an album Clutch depressed, gear stick centered, if an album

started strong but outstayed its welcome tbh

Hmmmm this seems promising. yeah no, sounds like nightmare music. Like something you'd hear in a Tim Burton movie. 2 stars

Impressive xylophone. Don’t need to hear again.

Glad to see something different, something classic, something instrumental. Guess I’m not that into tango though. Makes sense, because I tried dancing tango once and made a straight fool of myself.

1/3. Occasionally interesting, mostly boring, entirely forgettable. I’m sure this was cool to see live and stoned out of your mind, but as an album experience it’s not worth listening to.

Totally different than anything I've listened to before (I don't listen to a lot of tango music). Good background music and some pieces were interesting. Probably won't listen to it again, but glad it expanded my exposure

Better then tubular bells…

Both Piazzolla and Burton’s artistry is clearly on display throughout. A fine mixture of jazz and classical. Nice background music but nothing that stood out from the other for me.

2.5 stars. This album was fine, but it never fully grabbed me. I like jazz - and some of it I really love, but this one stayed more in the “respect it” category than the “engaged by it” category. As I move through albums that aren’t already in my wheelhouse, I’m realizing how much my ratings hinge on whether the music holds my interest, and this mostly didn’t. It’s not bad music at all, it just felt a bit flat for me as a full listen. I might connect more with a different Piazzolla album. Favorite track: Laura’s Dream

This was fine and all bu honestly it barely registered. Super super lowkey and I wasn't blown away

Haunting, beautiful in places, but mostly kinda boring to these untrained ears of mine. Music theory and shit, vibraphones, whatever, next

It was a pleasant enough hour I guess, but it never seemed to go anywhere in particular. Two stars.

Who on earth made this list

Background music

Mr, tango writer and xylophone, Argentina

I'd never say it was bad, but unfortunately, I was simply bored. It didn't grab my attention for even a minute, and the mood was definitely not to my taste. The violin was straight up annoying sometimes, it was very hard for me to get to the end of this album.

While i didn’t hate it, it’s not something i would choose to listen to again. I wasn’t a fan of the xylophone or whatever instrument it was that dominated a lot of the songs. Sometimes it felt like I was listening to the soundtrack of an old show or cartoon.

This live recording is an interesting inclusion of this list, certainly nice to see some South American representation. I'm not sure I would've picked this live recording over Piazzolla's actual studio work like Tango: Zero Hour, but maybe including Gary Burton was important. The two do work well together, the vibraphone and bandoneón together making a very nostalgic, smooth tango nuevo sound, but the live setting kind of breaks you from how atmospheric and lovely this kind of music can be. The pieces themselves aren't particularly distinct, so there isn't really any major high points to this album. I did find myself enjoying Laura's Dream quite a bit, and the rest was pleasant if nothing else. While I'm glad something like this was included on the list, I think there are way better examples even within these artists' catalogues. Sure, the addition of vibraphone to traditional tango music is interesting, I don't think this recording is nearly as polished or progressive as many other examples.

Interesting that this is in the 1001 best albums list. Great musicianship of course, but this is just a one-time listen for me.

So much xylophone

It's technically very good but vibraphone is just not for me

5/10 - не слушал

Erm, I feel sure this is extremely good but it's completely lost on me.

If you want a nuanced, full and faithful adaptation of my experience of listening to this today, simply to go youtube and type in "jerry human music".

It started off really strong and got worse for me

- More elevator music. Inoffensive but not very exciting. - Some fun instrumentation but it's largely the accordion and xylophone with piano backing at times. - A nice discovery but nothing I'm going to ever listen to again.

Yeah, no. This album opens with a 12 minute classically influenced instrumental that doesn't really do a whole lot for me. It them continues with a bunch of similar instrumentals featuring the vibraphone. Though he's undeniably good, the whole thing just feels like a showcase for the vibraphone rather than an album with good songs to listen to. It doesn't really do a whole lot for me.

I like jazz but this was a little too "background dinner jazz" for me.

I’m imagining a scientist in a laboratory working around the clock to create the perfect mix of Music That Dylan Does Not Like.

Good instrumental music, but instrumental music all the same. Hard to give it more than a 2. Nuevo Tango was really nice though. Best song: Nuevo Tango

This just wasn't for me.

I'm not against the mallets, its an important part of an ensemble, but this was too much mallets (for me)

This album was fine, but it’s the sort of thing I’d have on in the background. I liked the violin on the first track, but the dissonance throughout isn’t my cup of tea.

Just jazz.

filmmusik

Astor Piazzolla certainly made a great contribution to the development of world music, but his music was never really my cup of tea: it's not straightforward enough for dancing (and, according to him, that was never the intention), too restless for easy listening, but then again too monotonous for concentrated listening. Basically, he's one of those artists who are only really good live. In that sense, it's only natural that a concert recording appears on this list and not a studio album. I've listened to some good to very good live albums in this context (by B.B. King or Keith Jarrett, for example), but “The New Tango” doesn't really spark my interest. For me, it's on the same level as Charles Mingus—actually cool, but just not for me.

Another good jazz album here. Not sure I would return to this.

Just very, very boring.

I don't see what's "new" about this.
