Straight to the point, this is just some excellent disco produced by one of the greats. 4.5 upped to 5.

A masterpiece of disco. The singing and playing are both brilliant. It's astonishing that Rogers and Edwards had never met the Sledges before writing these songs.

Such a great album. Everyone knows the title track that will surely make you dance. But there are so many other wonderful tunes on that album like You're a Friend to me and especially thinking of you. Both should be mandatory on every wedding playlist.

This album has so many famous songs on it but I've somehow never heard their band name before. I liked this entire album, it was disco stripped down to its fundamentals. "He's The Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family" were my favorite tracks. It was all easy to listen to - I was doing lots of foot tapping and head bobbing. It wasn't too long either so I didn't get bored of the sound. Disco isn't my favorite genre to listen to at my desk chair, but I can see that this is the good stuff. 9/10

I have never once thought about who wrote We Are Family, but damn this was pretty good. I low key kind of like how groovy and funky disco as a whole is, and this is great disco. He's the Greatest Dancer is an awesome opener, didn't realize Gettin Jiggy Wit It sampled this, and I also really liked Lost in Music and Thinking of You.

I did not expect to enjoy this album as much as I did. We Are Family is iconic, but the rest was unknown to me. The disco vibe is strong, the bass lines are prominent, and it was just generally a fun album to listen to. Disco is so far from what I normally listen to, but I must have been in the right mood for this album!

All the best from this era are just solely fun and good times, I will dance to this any day. And Nile Rogers once again pushing a great album to be even better.

The Niles Rodgers involvement can be heard often and I love it.

This is a fun album if you let it have fun--Oh, what, wow?! I mean come on, that is fun even without roller skates. However, the title track will now have a special place in my life and probably make me cry going forward. This happened to be my 1001 album the day I went to visit my dad in the ICU. I like to keep him updated with my journey as he was a big influence to my musical tastes. He said this was one of his most popular during his disco DJ and lighting days. As I was talking about it, I said I'd play a bit of it for him but had to wait for "We are family" until my other sisters arrived. We had a blast once we got to play it. Half the album is already encoded in anyone who dances' DNA. The rest is good too, but good lord, Chic had a hit rate to die for back then.

Loved it. Vocals and bass are based the whole way thru but not overpowering, melodic choices are so fun. I know ‘we are family’ is such a memey song but forgot how good it is bahahahah.

Another Nile Rodgers production. Damn, this guy might be responsible for ALL the disco I actually like. Everything you expect from Chic is here but add 5 sisters with incredible range and vocal talent. Nothing but good vibes here. Dancing my ass off instead of working today.

Oh my god the funk

I cut this album on and immediately started two stepping to the train. Then suddenly I was transported to a random park with a bunch of people. They looked familiar and they smiled at me. I was confused but then it clicked, I realized they were my family! A sweet older woman reached out and handed me a plate. She ushered me to the table and waited patiently for me to finish. Then, off in the distance, I hear a familiar phrase come on to the speaker, “WE ARE FAMILY!” I drop my plate, rush to the dance floor, and two step the night away. An experience I’ll never forget!

Fantastic album. Although there aren't many tracks on the original album, there are four absolute bangers that every one will know unless they've been living in antartica! The remaining four tracks were also very strong and would probably have fared well if released as singles.

Nothing on this album screams boring, despite its seemingly similar track composition. It Is a 45 minute dance jam, and I love it. Highlights include He’s the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, and We Are Family. Just an awesome experience. All in all, We Are Family is an amazing album. oh my goodness! this must be a straight 5, purely because nearly every song on here is magnificent. I love this album so much!! and it just reminded me that thinking of you is one of the nicest, smoothest songs ever written. but this was truly an experience to have so many amazing songs, one after another. i would rate this higher than a 5 based on the fact that this is so far ahead of everything else. I honestly never knew that all of these songs that i love were on the same album, insane!!

A fun disco party.

I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I knew most of the tracks on the album, but actually listening to them properly let me appreciate them fully. Excellent production throughout and some truly iconic melodies and hooks.

Aside from maybe maggot brain, this has to be the funkiest album I've gotten on this list. Pure 70s soul/funk stuff that I love and he's the greatest dancer is the greatest song on the record. It's so easy to listen to and so iconic sounding to me it's impossible to not at leat enjoy every song even when there are momentary lulls.

This feels like the culmination of a good HEARTY home cooked meal and the full atmosphere of a LONG overdue family reunion. The feeling just oozes out of you and covers you like a warm blanket. Sister Sledge were definitely creating incredible atmospheres for their perspective times and deserve every bit of shine for it.

Any album that establishes Will Smith as a fraud within the first 10 seconds gets five stars from me.

The moment i saw this, I just heard the familiar WE. ARE. FAH-ME-LEIGH! Glad I wasn't wrong. I enjoyed this record a bunch, it's some really wonderful mood boosting disco. I also discovered the main sample of a remix I heard in a hotel some time ago, so that also made me happy. It's the main beat of Thinking of You for those curious. Will listen again.

What an incredible mix of strings and orchestral arrangements and synth sounds from that era. Nike Rodgers' guitar playing is phenomenal. Sense of rhythm and timing is impeccable.

Truly perfect: I clicked play and knew exactly what I had got myself into. When you want a solid pop/fuck/soul album with some true feel good party classics then you play this album. The whole thing just makes you want to dance and sing along, god listening to this in silence without much of a reaction is hard. The bass, that funky guitar, THE VOCALS?!? Perfect.

What an absolutely delightful listen. I started the day with this album then continued with funky disco all day. He's the Greatest Dancer is one of my favorite 70s hits, and we all know the title song. We are Family reminds me of the movie The Bird Cage...soooo fabulous! And Nile Rodgers is largely responsible for making music funky & popular across the decades - Chic, Duran Duran, and Daft Punk to name a few. What a great disco album. I hope to see more of this. 4.5 stars

This was a great listen. Great way to start the day.

Generally, I'm not a fan of disco. It's fine to dance to, but it often sounds too bloated and shiny - like a club I wouldn't be allowed into. So it was a huge surprise how much I liked this album. Compared to Chic and their like, it was gritty and real. You could hear the instruments being played, occasional grit and funk in the vocals, lyrics that showed a bit more depth than just "let's party". I'd always had Sister Sledge down as somewhat of a novelty band, but this will absolutely be getting played again. A clear 5 stars.

Oh man it took me back to the fun funk of the 70s!

So funky and groovy! This album is a bop. There's a few tracks I knew in their original form, and a few I know from other tracks sampling them. Sometimes I get a bit surprised while listening to albums on the list and I hear a song that I only knew from other songs sampling it. This happened with One More Time - I knew it from KAYTRANADA's "Twin Flame", possibly my favourite song of 2022. Never knew it sampled Sister Sledge, but now I know! Either way, this was an excellent album, with some absolute disco classics. Enjoyable throughout. Favourite: We Are Family

Classics all the way; such a vintage vibe. Must be one of the most sampled albums—at least a couple of the songs I know better from subsequent sampled versions.

Yeah I dig this disco shit. Absolutely adore the rhythm and flow of this album. I've started to notice that a lot of disco - this album included - is about an appreciation of music in general and I love that so much. "Lost in music, caught in a trap, no turning back, lost in music" is a great way to describe the feeling of discovery and why I like this list. It's great living in a time where it's chill to like both Metal and Disco without starting a gang war. 5

Livin' life was SO fun listening to this album!

A few facts about the song We Are Family: 1. It is on my top 10 list of favorite songs. 2. It's one of very few that I can safely claim to know all the words to. 3. The "hey-hey-hey-hey-yah" on the chorus after the first verse is maybe my favorite moment in pop music. 4. I went to a dance convention in 1979 and learned a dance to this song and to this day, every time they sing "I got all my sisters with me," my brain says "brush-hop-step, brush-hop-step" in rhythm. Anyway...it's so great to get a legit, straight-up disco album. The upbeat songs are divinely danceable and the slow jams have lovely lead vocals and rich back-up voices. Moreover, the love grooves lack the faux earnestness that such songs often display, tending to make me more uncomfortable than anything. The ballads on this album were sweet and authentic and just as appealing as the dance tracks. A really great album!

The incredible sound of Chic covered in those perfect Sister Sledge voices? No wonder this album towers over the disco era. Three of the songs on this have been among my favorites since the moment I heard them (He’s The Greatest Dancer, Lost In Music, We are Family). I don’t recall hearing any of the other songs on this, but they were love at first listen. So great!

Another one where I was delighted when it appeared for me and knew would be 5 stars. Niles Rodgers reckons this is the best Chic team album, and I can't say that I disagree with him. Still filling dancefloors everywhere. You need this record in your life.

Came very close to giving this a 4 for a couple of tracks near the end but upon listening again it's gotta be a 5. This is proper "everything's gone to shit I can't get any work and I don't want to" 70s dystopia disco right here. The escape from reality. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers is a killer combo, but it's worth remembering that at this point in their career they were making a name for themselves, they're not playing it safe so much as developing a brand. /rant

Like a greatest hits album, the perfect Chic Organisation album - the trademark sound in full flow, double electric guitar, complex bass parts and beautiful vocals. And, sure, the uptempo tracks are more enjoyable than the ballads but what a party.

It's a bonus Chic album. There's even an argument to say it's the best Chic album, high praise indeed. You know how songs get overplayed on the radio, you love them for decades and then get sick of them? Well that's not possible here, as these are some of the greatest pop songs even written. Hearing them in their full glory, 5-6 minutes long, just adds to the joy. Annoyingly only the 7" version of We are Family is available on Spotify, you need the record or YouTube for the majestic full 8 minutes (only this one link seems to have the correct tempo) which needs to be experienced. So many R&B/Disco classics that I would never have found if not for today’s recommendation. ‘Lost In Music’ is by far my favourite, with that smooth riff and heavy bass. ‘One More Time’ finishes on a high, with the symmetry of sounds throughout the album.

It's one thing to always hear about how R&B has influenced music and been sampled so much over time, it is another to listen to the albums yourself. I am a big fan of R&B and the voice really adds to the flow, here it is perfect. I have nothing against this album, for uniformity sake I am not including the remixes included in the remaster as well I don't take that as a part of the original album. I find this simple, smooth and sweet, never once boring, never not groovy. Absolutely no qualms with the album. Banger of a closing too. 5/5

Instantly knew track 1 from the sample in Gettin' Jiggy With It and was confident I'd enjoy this and I was thankfully not let down. The Sledge Sisters I was unfamiliar with by name, but I knew We Are Family and they give some beautiful vocal performances here. Nile Rodgers though, that guitar is fucking awesome throughout. The way he plays is immediately recognizable and completely unique and yet it still sounds super catchy and is easily memorable. He completely steals the show for me here. Sat my ass in a chair the whole listen at work, but damn I could absolutely see myself shredding the dance floor to this.

This one surprised me a little. I obviously knew “We Are Family” and “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” but I had never heard “Lost in Music,” and that ended up being my favorite discovery on the album. The whole record is unmistakably late ’70s, and since I was a kid when this came out, there’s a real nostalgia factor to that sound. But there’s more here than just disco. “Somebody Loves Me” is a really good ballad, “Thinking of You” is another strong track, and the opening harmonies on “You’re a Friend to Me” really show off how talented Sister Sledge were as a vocal group. That was probably my biggest takeaway. Strip away the very 1979 production, and these women had the talent and vocals to fit right into the new jack swing or contemporary R&B/soul world that came along a decade later. Even “We Are Family,” a song I’ve heard approximately 47 billion times at weddings, works really well in the context of the album. It feels like it belongs rather than simply being the massive hit dropped into the middle. A consistently good album, a fun trip back to the late ’70s, and “Lost in Music” was a great discovery. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I don’t feel the need to own it on vinyl.

It’s a Chic album by any other name, and very good too.

Takes me back to the Pirates winning the World Series. When I was a kid I just thought of the Pointer Sisters as tall, elegant women with a fun song. Now that I’m older, I recognize that they were great singers. Not my normal music preference but at no time I felt like quitting the album. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers wrote one of the ultimate staying power songs with “We Are Family” and the Pointer Sisters brought the energy. “We’re Lost in Music” caught my ear.

Most songs are great to listen to

listening to a lot of underground disco (the stuff that directly lead to house music) has kinda warped just how rich and soulful it can be. it feels a lot more familiar and intimate than the coked-up dancefloor bliss of what Patrick Adams and Jocelyn Brown were doing at the time. it's not all hits, but the title track is very well remembered for a reason. probably one of the best *hits* of the disco era. deserves to be one of the 1001? disco is woefully underrepresented on here. you might go "oh well that's because of the backlash n all that" but this book is British, and disco only really "died" in America. this is a fitting inclusion! but choosing it over Donna Summer is something i have difficulty defending.

Hits then and still sampled today. Can't ask much more than that. Probably didn't need the 4 remixes that the Spotify album has but still a great album. The best tracks are the more upbeat ones which includes the hits. Just short of 5 stars.

Funky disco beats back up lovely vocals and themes consistent with repetitive dance music. Very little substance but a very boogie beat. Pleasantly surprised that each song had a unique sound.

Like most people, I only knew Sister Sledge as the "We Are Family" band. So I was pleasantly surprised to find they made plenty of truly solid disco, including a fair few songs I already has passing familiarity with due to sampling.

Beautiful album those first few tracks are magical and take me right back to some great times on the dance floor

Just a classic fr, the Nile Rodgers Lost in Music is just a huge tune. I didn’t know a lot of the non singles, some nice chill stuff in there.

Solid disco album! The titular track is fine, but far from my favorite song which was a pleasant surprise.

Brought me down memory lane. There were quite a few songs that stood out as something I've heard before in old movies and shows

Did not have the highest expectations going into this, but it’s actually a very solid record. The songs and grooves are catchy, production is very chic (lol), the deep cuts are pretty cool too, and of course fantastic vocal performances. Apart from an occasionally awkward verse, it’s pretty great actually - do also check out the 1984 remix of lost in music on the 1995 remaster 7.5/10

At first I was like “Oh no! Not disco!” But then: this has so many bangers on it! But that’s because…. This is another secret Nile Roger’s album. Awesome stuff.

This is a fairly strong album. The hits contained on the record are really fantastic, but most of the other tracks are as well. I'm not a massive fan of the slower tracks, but that says more about me than the tracks (I'm just not a huge fan of disco era ballads.)

Great fun. The beats are excellent, the vocals and harmonies are lovely. It made me want to dance. It’s the sort of album that’s perfect when you’re in the mood for it, but not something I would often put on. Gets a bit too repetitive for me at times. Do you think they made their sister who wasn't in the band hang out while they recorded We Are Family so they weren't lying when they sang "I've got all my sisters with me."? Solid album. Such a soulful, fun, positive sound. So glad to run into this album and who knew they did the Get Jiggy With It sample. Faves were We Are Family, and He's the Greatest Dancer.

The disco was strong with this one, and I didn't mind it. Fun to hear "We Are Family" in full. Everything else was nice to listen to as well.

It's short, sweet, and a ton of fun. There are some ballads on here which I don't really think work all that well, but the biggest hits on this are undeniably good. This is the first album I've gotten on this list that I've never heard of before, and I really enjoyed it.

super duper, ich yearne nach disco

This is the sorta albums I started doing this list for. Incredible disco and RnB. Already was a great album up until We Are Family but when that song hit, oh man did it HIT. Listened to half of it a second time over after it finished, which is a rarity for me.

What an album, funky, groovy with great disco elements. The influence of Nile Rodgers in the production is so clear but so good. Also, We Are Family hits so perfectly on the album and is always a delight to listen to. The racing laps I was doing around Vallelunga while listening to this album were so great due to the energy of this album. This list has shown my love for funk music.

This rules, in a funky disco kinda way. Try not to nod your head with any of these tunes playing as you drive along, especially 'We Are Family' and 'Lost In Music' - absolute crackers.

Pretty good disco album, not quite great though.

Not exactly my favourite genre, bit I found this one very enjoyable. My favourite track is (no surprises): "We Are Family". I particularly like the bass and guitar sound. Overall, I think this deserves 4 stars.

Growing up as a young punk, I bought into the "disco sucks" rhetoric, and spent most of my life avoiding and dismissing disco as dumb, formulaic, and soulless music. It took a friend, coworker, and mentor to show me how wrong I was Sultry grooves, perfect vocals, and a variety of styles. It's kind of incredible how good the record sounds, how full the bass is, how perfect the piano is; just everything. I'm so glad I can appreciate Sister Sledge.

What great music, soothing, good walking music, makes the weather better.

Solid disco. Obviously has a huge influence, as I feel like I’ve heard each of these songs sampled at some point. I don’t feel like I can totally relate with this music, but I respect it.

Nice slice of disco music. Probably didn't need Wikipedia to figure out this was a Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards album, it's produced exactly like a Chic album and I don't say that as a bad thing. Rodgers and Edwards are the dkings of disco guitar and bass so I welcome hearing them in the producer's chair/doing studio work for other groups. 8.5/10.

8.5/10 It's nice to see a proper 70s disco album here. A lot of disco albums from this era get overlooked by critics because of how oversaturated it was, but this album really stands out with Rodgers and Edwards' production.

This album was pretty cool. I tossed up whether or not it was worth 4 stars and ultimately I think it is. Funky stuff. Strong, energetic, direct, altogether a great album / band who I'd never really given a second thought to.
