Reviews (page 9 of 13)
An absolute beast of an album, clocking in at 2 hours and 5 minutes (at least the edition I listened to). It's just too long. There are some great songs here but there needs to be some editing down. It's pretty standard ex-Beatle hippy-dippy stuff l, but Harrison shows a pretty good range of sounds across the album while staying in his lane. Notable songs on this listen were "My Sweet Lord" "Wah-Wah" "Awaiting On You All" and "Art of Dying." 3/5. It was fine. Way too long.
its nice and I enjoy listening but nothing really stands out beside my sweet lord
Disc 1 was pretty boring, but thank god things picked up a lot on Disc 2 with more up-tempo tracks like Art of Dying. Overall I had a positive experience with this album.
This is was not bad. Better than expected. Not exactly groundbreaking though
I hate these extended albums that Spotify gives you, it makes it hard to judge the album as the artist intended and how this list was built. Whenever I see Disc 1/Disc 2 on Spotify I check Wikipedia for the original album track listing and create a playlist to match it. Maybe that's too much work but here we are Even with cutting it down this is still pretty bloated. There's about 10 very good tracks that would make an excellent album on their own. There's only one perfect double album and it's The Wall, every other one is half filler. I said what I said. 3 stars
I think that for a general album release, a non-anniversary edition or special edition, this is just fundamentally too long. It's hard to listen to from start to finish without either losing interest or concentration. There were some songs that I really enjoyed, which pulled me back in, but due to the sheer length of the album, it ruins it for me. I think that if this were maybe two separate albums, my opinion would be quite different. For a top-to-bottom listen, this is just not it. I've never really properly listened to The Beatles before, so I don't have that same love for this as The Beatles fans, but I can appreciate the well-written tracks. Favourites: I Dig Love My Sweet Lord Beware of Darkness
3.5 Some really great songs here but not almost 2 hours worth of them. Having two versions of the same song is a bit self-indulgent, the 35 mins of jams at the end even more so. Maybe George needed Lennon and McCartney in a way.
I am sure that there is a masterpiece album buried somewhere here. It just kept going and going. I read a bit about the history of the album and how it's widely considered the best solo album released by a Beatle. It is in a dire need of trimming but there are some good tunes. I wasn't a huge fan of the folk elements. Even though I can't classify it as a psychedelic record, there are some elements that shined through. The lyrics were good as well I would love to go back and try to explore it again. It was just too much to take in during one sitting. I even took some breaks. The mellow sound was a highlight as well. I really enjoyed the modern production. I liked "I'd Have You Anytime", "Beware of Darkness" and "All Things Must Pass".
Hmmmm not bad
album #80 i'll give a proper review later. it's long, huh! ꩜ album rating: ★★★☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,009 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 38 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 16 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 64
Would've definitely been a 2 if I listened to the whole album; a lot of junk on here. My Sweet Lord, What is Life and If Not For You were good songs tho
3/5 Favorite Song: Isn't It a Pity
Me gustó mucho. Muy parecido a The Beatles
i kinda dont care for the beatles sryyyyy
Just listened to disc one and it is a solid three.
I found this album to really embody that whole 70s feeling. The “Hopelessly in Love with the girl”, “Fight the man”, “Peace, Love and Happiness” vibe. I will say that I just so happened to listen to the remastered version. So initially I thought “Wow this is more like one big interconnected song than an album” but soon realized I was just listening to the same song over and over again, just remastered. Overall it was a peaceful and chill listen, that won’t challenge or overwhelm you too much or at all. While listening you come to learn what to expect throughout the songs which was both calming and slightly boring.
pretty good record but damn, this is a little too long
i was a beatles fan once.
Sooo long, 2 hours and even good stuff starts to blur together
Too long George, way too long.
Yeah, some classics in there. Mostly background music

The Good: We are presented with philosophy! The Bad: I try to understand philosophy, but I simply Kant! The Ugly: Spoiler alert!!! A triple fucking album… I think I was 10 years old when I heard my first Beatles song, I think… I know that I was 13 when I got my first Beatles album… I don’t know what age I was when I realized that George Harrison was his name… You’d think that, within a band, most people are like-minded. They enjoy the same foods, same drinks, same drugs-not judging here… Yet, we’ve all seen the Beatles documentaries where it is evident that John Paul George Ringo were not 1 person. Anyway, just like the John Lennon album I had to listen to where he is screaming about his childhood frustrations, here we are dealt with George’s frustrations about his music not being taken deemed appropriate for the Beatles records… Hallelujah, Krishna Kirshna, Hare Hare… we’ve all heard it a thousand times before, and we will hear it a thousand times more… and each time, we think the same thing: too fucking long. Had this been reduced to a single album, with all the lovely songs, some shortened a little, this would have been a 4* easy… Now, all things must pass… 2 1/2* upgraded, but barely
One of my main complaints with a lot of movies is that they need to earn their length, and I'd say the same about albums
Would have been a 4 but I didn't like either version of my favorite song by Harrison, "'My Sweet Lord."
Enjoyed the first album. Nice enough. Long. Haven't yet made it to the second one.
Maybe a bit long-winded but not boring or obnoxious Highlights: "Wah-Wah", "I Live For You", "Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)"
Lieber John oder Ringo
Its ok
I fell asleep each of the two times I was listening to this so idk.
Some great George songs.
Good grief George, you could have released two or three albums here. This falls just short of my criteria for a four, although if I selected what I like best to make one album it would be a four, easy. As it is, 3.33 rounded down. 3.
Blah
Nice and inoffensive I guess, just a bit boring really. Background listening
Really thought I wouldn't like this but the first half of the album surprised me. Then it went on, and on and on and on and on and...
A fine folksy rock album from George Harrison. But good God. Does it really have to be 2 hours long?
this could’ve been an email first many songs are killer, obviously.
28 songs Added to liked: -My Sweet Lord (already there) -Isn't it a Pity -What Is Life
This album went on so long I almost died WHILE listening to it. Apparently George stockpiled a ton of music the Beatles never wanted to use and couldn’t wait to just dump them all onto one album. It was fine, but I wouldn’t go back to listen again.
Quite the variety of songs on this album. Some albums are rock & roll through and through and others fall more securely into a ballad genre. Harrison is very talented as a musician and it’s clear he had similar help producing this powerful collection. You can hear the characteristics that Harrison brought to the Beatles in these songs and while this won’t become routine in my listening pleasure, I like taking this for a full spin.
There are some real highlights on here. Unfortunately, this is an album that suffers greatly from its length. There it too much to slog through to properly enjoy the good songs. Overall I enjoyed it, best of the Beatle solo efforts we've had on the list thus far.
A long fkin album with few good songs
Don’t have too much to say. A lot of quality in here, enjoyed it much more the second time. If George Harrison had the discipline to keep it to a single disk, I would be much more of a fan. I’m not sure if it just doesn’t inspire me or I hate double disk albums, but I’ll give it a 3+. Objectively probably better than that, just not to me.
George contributed some of the brightest highlights of the later Beatles albums and that genius is here, too. Sadly, so is a lot of filler, jams and alternate versions. Focused on a single disc this could have been the masterpiece that many consider it anyway, but this way it's all too much for me to take.
Alr, My Sweet Lord has some great chords and is really catchy. Ok hey wait what was Harrison up to religiously in the 70s? Christian and Hindu syncretism? Is "wah-wah" pussy? I can only assume so, unless it's also used to mean trying to keep clear of sadness (like crying). Was he a sex addict? A few genuinely christian songs, I really wonder what weird blend of religion Harrison was up to at this time. A few good instrumentals in here as well, but not necessarily something I would pull up and listen to. I genuinely wonder what it is that puts me off from just a recording of a guitar jam
Yeah, look, I like Harrison I think he was an amazing guitarist. It's probably better than most (yes, most) Beatles albums. However, it's a little on the dull side and still incredibly "Beatles". His vocals are on point, but aren't particularly gripping. Mediocre me thinks.
I don't need to do much research to know that this was George's big stepping out album. I'm sure that with the dissolution of the Beatles he'd felt free to make this thing the way he wanted. I wish he'd been a bit more selective though. Even without the bonus material, the album as a whole is a bit drawn out. Many of the songs sort of wear out their welcome. That's not to say this album is boring in it's entirety, but I was good and done with it around "I Dig Love". While everyone knows "My Sweet Lord" for fair reason, I think Harrison really finds his voice on "Isn't It A Pity". This kinda feels like his version of John Lennon's "Mind Games" in that they both dig deep and come up with incredible performances (both songs with similar tempos and compositions too). Ever the "spiritual" Beatle, there's lots of songs holding similar themes on this record: celebrating love, contemplating how human conflict could ever happen, a sprinkling of existentialism. "What Is Life" sounds like George had been holding this one in his pocket for at least 5 years based on its sound. It's upbeat with a harmonic vocal chorus about love. I could hear it being a Beatles song now. "Behind That Locked Door" was a life-saver for me, with a bit of a switchup in it's sonic choices. I think the slide guitar is PERFECT on this track. I wish for more variation like this, it all added to the humble, endearing nature I know George Harrison is tapped into when he's at his best. "Awaiting You All" felt like the only time Harrison really broke out of the wavelength he settled into, actually putting some strain on his vocal delivery. Once again, I'm left wishing for a bit more choices like this, even if I found this particular song to be a bit forgettable. As I said before, I was tapped out by this point in the record. It made the last three songs, which actually found that higher energy once more, seem like a slog. I can't find anything expressly *wrong* about this record, but only a few of it's obvious songs standout in the field of it's contemporaries. At it's best, it pairs grounded sentiments with easy-to-swallow music, and at it's worst it wore me down a bit. 3/5
Pretty basic, repeating and predictable pattern, getting boring after a while. Could be used as a fine background, but wouldn't listen to it on a daily basis. Similar to Layla, but without the legendary intro. I know a person that could listen to it.
This is such a great album. Harrison had this all in mind for a lot of years and finally got to put everything on a record. Just about every song works, including some major hits off of this. 3.5
Mmm, I do not rly love Beatles and their solo albums too.
There are plenty of great songs on this album. It suffers from the perennial double album problem: too much filler. In my opinion double albums only work as concept or live albums. A studio album that’s presenting your current work? Edit that shit dog.
Pretty good
tbf peak ash
these chord progressions kick ass. blues so fun. wah wah tritone... guitar is very satisfying to listen to what are "apple scruffs"? "i love dig" me when i play minecraft highlights - art of dying. its not even close out of the blue was also fun
Nice simple melodies that resolve with complexity I did not expect. But ultimately just Beatles lite to me. I appreciate the spirit of My Sweet Lord but feels disingenuous use of “world religeons”. I appreciate the honest existential and introspective themes above love and life. Admittedly did not finish whole album.
Very enjoyable album
Alr quiet beetle i see you, I genuinely forgot you wrote my sweet lord gg so far this is just delightful and I love it My Sweet Lord What is life I dig love, I totally thought he was saying I love Dick wtfff LOL Art of Dying is groovy as fuck Pretty good, not bad, too long, but otherwise unremarkable other than some hits
Very listenable - 2 hours very long though - could have been condensed
Was too old timey sorta annoyed be at the third song, liked the first song a lot but that was it. I skipped the second, I think this album is good however my music taste doesn’t align with it yet
Det finns låtar som är värda mer...
There are some absolute bangers on this album, but just way too much filler. I have no idea why George decided to release a triple album, especially when he had done two versions of the same songs. It seems like over indulgence, but what would you expect from a former Beatle on his debut solo album. If he had cut this down to 40 minutes and chosen the tracks wisely, then I would have had this on my collection years ago. But it is just a sprawling mess, but a very tuneful and well written and performed one.
Some really good stuff in there but also a lot of nonsense. Most of the second disc could be binned off, although if you view them as just being bonus tracks then it's not so bad I guess. The mix is pretty poor too, especially on the second side
Too long.
Oh boy, a triple album🙄 Quantity isn’t better than quality. This album is fine. There are some really good songs on here but my score is diluted by the sheer amount of average music in between.
Re hippie
What an odd album. 50 minutes of absolutely 5/5 material, another 50 of filler finished off with 20 minutes of dull blues jamming. Had the potential to be perfect, but the bloat makes sure that I'll never listen to this again from start to finish. This is why producers exist.
No real notes. really really long album and was tired of it by the end
A lot of influence on 70s and 90s rock in this album. A couple of good tracks I'd never heard before. Not sure why the Apple Jam tracks are needed, and agree with others that did all this material need to be included? Maybe condensing to a single album would have made the album less rambling.
This album was long, at times samey, but overall pretty good. I think the instrumentation was by far the best thing here. "Wah-Wah: is aptly named. I love the very thumping bass with the brass and the wah pedal on the lead guitar. Choir vocals work better here for me than in "My Sweet Lord". Isn't it a Pity builds on itself as it goes, so while a slow start had me feeling a bit down on it I can't deny that I enjoyed the overall experience. Like most of the songs on the album it could've done with being snappier Art of Dying is pretty phenomenal, probably my favourite? not sure. Hard one to rate, it has a lot of tracks and they leaned generally towards good for me.
I'm sorry I cannot listen to a 2 hour long album it pisses me off
Some good tracks in there, but enough that I didn't connect with that I'm not going back to this album. Maybe the jam album.
Ta bien
Liked: Isn't It a Pity Added: Isn't It a Pity
Maybe a grower but in the time restrictions of this project, needed more quality control for me.
It’s not an all-timer, but I do think it goes to show that there was more to the Beatles than just Paul and John. The Beatles synergy was obvious, becoming greater than the sum of their parts. Peel off one player and he’s not quite 25% of the Beatles good, but he’s every bit as good as your average 70’s New age yahoo with a record deal and an acoustic guitar
A coupe of good songs but a pretty average album.
5/10 Best songs: Wah-Wah, What Is Life, Let It Down, Art of Dying Why is this album over two hours long? Why is George Harrison singing "hare Krishna" in My Sweet Lord? The album has some absolute bangers - better than anything the Beatles ever released, sorry not sorry - but it is bloated with a lot of dreck and frankly mediocre songs. Some serious editing could have made this a good album, but what's here is just... not.
Bastante chill
eh, it's fine. I wouldn't re-listen on purpose but it was fine.
Good stuff
Old fashioned
Good but long. Double album
Sometimes artists benefit from a really good editor. This is much too long and there is way too much to wade through. The good stuff gets lost. Sometimes less is more.
Overcompensation, I think, is the word I’d go with. I pity George Harrison. I do. He did get kind of a raw deal at the tail end of the Beatle years. But he pities himself more, and that's his entire problem. This album feels like an accumulation of resentments. Every journal entry prompted by every petty slight from '67-'70, fleshed out into a track here; even on the ones that, on their faces, have nothing to do with inter-Beatle squabblings, you can almost hear him saying, with a considered smugness, "Take THAT, John-and-Paul. You thought this wasn't good enough for an album? You were WRONG about me." And sometimes they were. There are some great tracks on this album; we all know which ones. But sometimes they weren't. This album didn't need to be a triple album. But George, it seems, felt some deep need to have it all out there; to prove himself; to say everything he had to say about what he felt was his unfair treatment at the hands of the other Beatles for the whole world to hear. And then it turned out that, unless you want to count I've Got My Mind Set On You, he didn't have that much else to say, for most of the rest of his solo career. That's the tragedy of George, I guess. As far as I can tell he carried a Beatle-related bitterness with him all the way up until he died. Paul and Ringo seem to have made peace with the ugliness of the ending some time ago. Even John, supposedly, was at least a few serious steps into the process of mending his relationship with Paul when his life was cut unexpectedly short (though some of the most significant testimonial on this is of course coming from Paul, who seems to have undergone a surgery to weld a pair of rose-tinted lenses into his eye sockets, so, grain of salt). But George? Interview transcripts I’ve read from the people close to him seem to suggest that even at the end, things were strained. Clips I’ve seen from Anthology (which I ought to state in the interest of transparency that I’ve never sat down and watched in full) show him looking at Paul and even the camera like he's thinking about homicide; like, if he didn't need the money at that point in time, he'd have been anywhere else in the world. All of this, combined with the fact that his solo career was so rocky, combined with the fact that he died relatively young... it all gives me the impression of a life that was stunted, a potential that was never fully reached, because one way or another, he was never able to let the scab alone and move on. For all that he made it public knowledge that he didn't want to be defined by his Beatles legacy... well, is it really getting away from something if you let a powerful resentment of it live in your head for over thirty years? If the album in which you can't stop talking about it all is the only one most people remember you for, because that's the one you poured quite so much of your energy and talent into? TOO much, of your energy and talent. This album is way too long, even setting aside the Apple Jam. It’s also overproduced. We don’t even need to get into a Phil Spector discussion here except to say, well, you know. Layers and layers of tracks on tracks, because we can, because THIS will really knock them over, THIS will really show them, THIS will make them listen to me and realize I had as much to say as they did all along. Horns; reverb. In-your-face. My favorite song from this album is Run of the Mill. I don’t have the album version of that song on a single one of my playlists. The one that I keep coming back to is the demo: just George and his guitar; a beautiful melody, when it's not being overshadowed by the brass. Lyrics that really break your heart. It's you that decides, which way you will turn. I don't know if George ever really managed to commit to a decision to turn away from what being in the Beatles made him feel. For that matter, I don't think John and Paul were ever his worst enemies. I think he was always his own.
So far my favorite of the Beatles-adjacent albums. I don't think it needed to be two hours, though
It’s too long for a decent listen through, there are good songs in her but buried in amongst to much filler.
One of the better Beatles solo albums
This is #day593 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I mean, I understand this is Harrison's first solo record after the band's breakup, but hell, a triple album, aka, two hours of music, is kind of overly self-indulgent. Standout songs are "My Sweet Lord," "Isn't It A Pity," and, of course, I'm disarmed before that sax in the epic psychedelic blues closer that "Out Of The Blue" is. Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day594.
pretty good but only had time for first song. very much my kinda vibe tho
Way slower than I like but I'm not here to just listen to what I like
Started strong, but I did not like wah wah. Some good songs, enjoyable listen through.
Meandering and far too long, but I'm going to be forgiving, as it's generally not awful. What IS awful is having more than one version of the same song for no good reason. I can see some of this is from listening to the 2001 remaster, so I suppose that's my fault for not listening to the (shorter) original version of this. I can imagine a really good album could be produced here by cutting two-thirds of the material. Three stars.
So long my headphones ran out of battery. I really fancy a pepperoni pizza now.
I've always felt that, out of all 4 of The Beatles, George was the best songwriter and very under-appreciated. This is a great album, but it's just too long. I got bored after a while.
I think the best of the solo albums from the Beatles members. But damn why do I remember this being so much better than it is? Have my tastes changed that much since last listen? 🤷♂️
i don’t think the beatles are for me :( perfectly fine music, probably great depending on the situation, but i would not go relisten to it
Me gusto.
Love it, but third disc is useless.
Enjoyed the album but it was a little bloated with over 2 hours of content.
Heard this album many times over the years. Some of the songs are fantastic. Some are ok at best. It would have made a great single album and as a matter of fact me and many of my friends did a self edit when we recorded it onto cassette tape. Making it a single album or good songs.
All Things Must Pass - George Harrison: 3/5 * I dont understand the album cover * Pretty average, to hippee folk-y for me I think * Halfway thru disc 1 and they all sound the same. maybe these would be ok if used at the right time in a movie? * Backyard/recess notebook songs mainly. Town Troubadour type songs mainly. * I dont mind "Let It Down" * Guitar is ok, melodies are funky. * Disk 2. Maybe I'm in a Gilmore Girls episode, maybe I'm in a horror psychological thriller? * "Plug Me In" is the best so far. Literally just all epic guitar n stuff. * Disk 2 is significantly better than Disk 1. * "I Remember Jeep" Is groovy too. * Yeah, Pepperoni song too. * Last 4 songs are bangers
I know it's been discussed ad nauseum, but there's just no conceivable way that an album this bloated could ever be a 5. I can't help but laugh at the reviews that are like, oh you can't judge this album on the apple jam, that was just a fun thing thrown in. Are you serious? It's part of the album, so it should be judged accordingly. The truth is, there are 4-5 good songs here. You could easily take this thing down to 10 songs and have yourself a very tight album. Instead we get - this.
What am I missing here? This album is too long filled with too long but decent folk/psych/pop songs that echo the Beatles but don't blow me away in any fashion. I'm sure some people heard this at a point in their life where it was like, "oh man this is the song I need right now" but without that, it's just some late 60s early 70s stuff that needs an editor. I guess it set the table a little bit? Probably a "you should hear this" for its place in history but if this is a masterpiece of a class, then it's just a class I don't care much for (overlong psych folk albums with jam sessions). There's probably, as there usually is for albums this sprawling, that I need to spend more time with it, but it's an album a day, it ain't happenin'.
Even ignoring the third disc, I didn’t get a lot out of this. I might be stupid or something, I don’t know.
Bit long George my guy but good job
I do love George Harrison, My Sweet Lord is in my top 5 Touch Tunes songs and I’m assuming the whole thing was decent but I didn’t have 2 hours for this yesterday.
George is not my favorite Beatle. And he was obviously sad and going through some things when he made this album. It’s also much more mellow than you’d expect.
En jaksanu ku ekan levyn kuunnella, mut täähän oli ihan hyvän tuulista lauleskelua. En pidä piitlesiä minään, mut tää oli positiivinen yllätys
Vaikka tästä nyt rajas pois Spotifyn extrat, niin kyl viesti tul hyvin selkeesti perille. Ex-beatle päästetyy matti/teppo -kaksikosta eroon, niin ruvennut tuuttamaan useemman PUOLEN verran tavarata. On siellä hyviäkin biisejä seassa, mut joo, tällaseen rojektiin vähän liikaa lautaselle. Iha Kiva.
This was a good listen. It was nice to have on, but it was kind of forgettable. I remember listening to it, I remember enjoying it, but I don't remember the details. It was also just too long. Cut this jawn in half and it could be a really nice record!
👎
Slower music done right. Any 5 star reviewers haven't listened to It's Johnny's Birthday.
Tolle Lieder dabei. Tolle instrumentiert und alles. Aber zu viel.
⭐️ All Things Must Pass 7/10 El álbum en general me gustó. La parte instrumental está buena, me recuerda a The Dark Side Of The Moon.
Not a bad album. The second disc was more of a jam session but a good listen.
*1970. *2 disc album - 2 hrs, 5 mins... This is the remastered version, but it looks like the original album was still long (like 1 hr, 40 mins). *My Sweet Lord is the only song I know. And I think I recognize What is Life? *Very pleasant, soft, sweet. Great background music. *This is a LOT of George Harrison - couldn't make it all the way through without skips. RATING - 6.5/10
Some good songs on here but just to much. 3 stars
I listened to the 50th anniversary edition for this. Harrison's voice is on the verge of being annoying for me but not quite. The instrumentals are generally pleasant, but not good enough to carry a track by themselves i.e. Disc 3 which was almost all instrumentals was the weakest part of the album. I liked the track "Hear Me Lord".
Jeff: Just okay, same old same old. Simran: Good enough to add 2 songs into her mega playlist
Levyllä oli muutama aiemmin kuulemani biisi. Ihan ok levy, mutta tuskin jää hirveästi pyörimään omaan soittimeen.
Sometimes the individuals who make up a supergroup don't hold up on their own as a solo artist. Yes he has a big hit on this album but the rest is forgettable.
:l
I just never know about this one. I know it's considered great. I know it's multi-platinum. But it's contradictory for me. I naturally consider this album to be songs that "weren't good enough for the Beatles." And it has a couple bangers, but I just expected more. This is the guy that gave the world "Here Comes The Sun," after all! I loved My Sweet Lord, even when I was a kid. Never thought it was stolen, unbelievable that he had to pay $800k in damages. Wha??? If Not For You, Isn't It A Pity, Wah Wah, I Dig Love, and What Is Life really strong. The others? Really meh. Probably closer to 3 1/2, not quite a 4...
This was a tough one. Mostly because George Harrison is a certifiable songwriting genius, and it should have been a slam dunk 5 stars. Should have been. Three classic songs (My Sweet Lord, What Is Life and Isn't It A Pity) make the album essential. Unfortunately, they don't disguise the fact that it's mostly filler and maybe even overrated. An argument can be made that sequencing the ten best songs here condensed down to one single album would stand as the finest solo album of any Beatle. In the end, it really is an amazing album that blends folk rock with interesting instrumentals. But that run time is just ridiculous. Did I need to listen to this before I die? Yeah, but I will probably never hear the full thing again.
ope lost some notes. look i'm not gonna write liner notes for every track on a two hour album. i'll report back at the end. it's a two hour album... listening to the beatles hammers in how influential the beatles actually were. wish you were here clearly derives from harrison here in several ways. love his rendition of if not for you. but... it's a two hour album. was that really necessary, george? a lot of songs honestly just blended into background noise for me. 3.49/5, rounded to 3/5. good, influential, too long.
Decent tunes but bare long
Undoubtedly some very good songs here, and on the whole it’s much more successful than John Lennon’s dour “Imagine,” which we recently reviewed (I have not heard McCartney’s debut solo album). One gets the sense Harrison emerged from the implosion of The Beatles in relatively good shape mentally — or at least with the most to prove. It’s like a suitcase full of songs his two former bandmates had rejected, and it’s fun to imagine what some of them would’ve sounded like with the full band’s arrangement and backing, not that they don't sound good in George's hands. But it’s also a lot to digest for a debut, and it drags on far too long. Especially cruel is the introduction of these lengthy instrumental blues-rock jams on side 8 or whatever. They feel wholly disconnected from the rest of the album and were probably just the influence of George’s good pal Eric Clapton, who was secretly pining to fuck Harrison’s wife.
Idk that much about George Harrison as a solo artist (or as a beatle honestly) but this was generally enjoyable. I always get nervous in these that im gonna post a 3/5 pretty good! Review and then it’ll turn out to be the greatest album of all time or something but only one way to find out…
sometimes these albums are just too long and it starts to feel like homework. especially a lot of these older classic albums because there’s so many reissues and deluxe editions i have to make sure i’m not listening to a version with too much extra stuff, but the first one i clicked on for this was 70 songs long. Thankfully I’m just doing the 23-song version (still very long!). I was anxious at the start but very into what is life
Mucho respect to George and the contributors to this album, but it's not going in my regular rotation. Too long, and juuust on the other side of what I'm looking for. 3/5
For my last Beatles adjacent album (until i get to the user albums at least), All Things Must Pass certainly helped them go out with a fair bang. I wouldn't say it's amazing but probably the best Beatles adjacent album i have heard. This is probably some of the better psychedelic rock i have heard with it having enough weirdness and energy to it but also being very pleasant to the ears too. The one thing that is probably gonna put people off this album is the length as it does go on for an hour and 46 minutes and a lot of it does feel like filler but it wasn't ever too terrible. I definitely think this album could have benefitted from being shorter but all in all, pretty good album. Best Song: My Sweet Lord Worst Song: Wah-Wah
George is one of my top Beatles and there are some really good songs in here. Beware of Darkness is so good. But why is it 2 hours long. Sometimes editing down is worth it.
Some songs I liked, but the rest faded into the background of my adventure
chill album, not usually my vibe but its cool. Too long for my liking though, way too many records on it. Can't realistically do a front to back listen in a sitting without feeling like I want it to be over quicker
Decent album. Not my usual style at all but easy to listen to from start to finish. 3.5/5
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Ganz gut.
My sweet Lord a 2hr album! ‘All things must pass’ and eventually this album does because 2hrs is just unnecessary. For me an album should never really be surpassing 1hr by much. Overall, it was a pretty decent listen but just quite unforgettable only standout songs ‘Beware of darkness 1st version’, ‘Art of dying’ and of course ‘My sweet lord’. My sweet lord really is a fantastic song, and I expected this album to bring that same sort of calibre for a few more songs. I have noticed that with 1001 they will include an album which has 1 big hit on it rather than the whole album perhaps being worthy of actually being on this list. Giving a mid 3 star as there were a good few nice listens on here but in conclusion it’s just an average album for me. Maybe if it was shortend and better curated it could climb higher.
cok boyle 70-80ler hippie vibe its cute makes me chuckle
did not listen completely, but sounded good
Goes on way too long and too much Hare Krishna but pretty ok tbh. Low 3
Some nice songs, but entirely too long and rather one-note.
Not a standout, but still decent.
Average ex Beatle slop
3.4 1x catch up 2/13 would like to listen again sometime
very long and not my genre i fear
not my type, but overall good
It's affy long. Enjoyed what I had time for, but 2 hrs!?!
How am I just learning about this album!? Sweet Lord is a gift.
A huge project that took a few days to get all the way through. A lot of great material here, ranging in styles. Most of it pretty great, just a lot to digest at once.
All Things Must Pass by George Harrison sounds like he got space from the Beatles, the album wander around a bit I’ve never listened to this before, researching a bit about the album, I realised it came out in 1970 (the year I was born), as a triple LP, and was No.1 in the UK for 8 weeks, so was massive. It was pretty progressive for 1970 so I appreciate the sound and creativity of it. Favourite track has to be My Sweet Lord, might predictable but it was is a great single, iconic song, I love it. I don’t love every track. I felt there was honesty and listened to a few of the tracks a couple of times after my initial listen. 3.5 out of 5 for me
Reminds me of being in high school
Simple but beautiful songs.
"Wah-Wah" guitar solo When Harrison said "I love dig" I heard something entirely different... Okay, "Art of Dying" This was okay in my opinion. There were a few songs I gravitated towards, but I wasn't a fan of everything. I also didn't love the mixing on this album, as it was sometimes hard to hear Harrison, though I know that was probably on purpose.
Trevligt men inte så spännande
Some all time hits and some B level songs that run a bit too long. Good album overall
So many Beatleses! I thought I liked George, but a triple album is making me rethink things. All things must pass, including listening to this entire album. I do not like to behold the album cover, although I do like George(?)'s hat. After this my Beatles solo album ranking is like, John > Paul > George, which in retrospect might just be a length ranking. Ah well. It was still fine. I do hope Ringo has one too. I bet it'd be a crisp 35 min. Highlight: 'Awaiting on You All'
I got listening fatigue I can’t lie. The end of the album got very loud which wasn’t my taste, but there’s a few songs I really enjoyed. It’s a good album but just a little single faceted for me.
Very long album. Guitar playing way ahead of Lennon and the melodies were far more catchy. I could have lived without some of the long guitar solos.
Bland
some great songs, but not a strong overall album
3/5
country
George Harrison has absolutely shaped my love and passion for music into what it is today. I have been able to engage in eclectic sounds and embrace all genres that I stumble upon. All things must pass is a generational record, constantly played and cherished.
No hate to George, just not a fan
George
It's a good album but way, way too long
My sweet lord is a classic, instrumental tracks at the end were all nice. A few of the songs in the middle sort of blurred into one on only one listen through 3.5
Ambiental, I love that. Es super largo el disco igual. My sweet lord, a classic, and I get why
I was waiting for the album to be over. The only question I have is “why?”. It’s not great, and not horrible either, I’m just sad about time spent listening it. It’s really sad that it’s just ok
A bit to much hippyness. But impressive.
Worse as it goes on
I do believe that George Harrison may be my favourite Beatle idk. I don't really know anything about the other ones but still. I like this vibe it's very groovy I can see how he's kinda the hippie one. Is he? I don't know anything about the Beatles. But this is a vibe. Inspired by my people as well. Over 2 hours is crazy though. This guitar work is devious. Why are they all so long how much does this guy have to say. Now I'm sure they're very interesting but I just don't care enough to listen to the alternate versions of the same songs. Super long albums like this tend to drag on a little imo. I feel like there are a lot of British references I'm not picking up on here tbh. I'm happy I'm not though fuck the Brits. Favourite: Behind That Locked Door Least favourite: It's Johnny's Birthday
O único álbum solo verdadeiramente bom do George. 3.5/5
Good vibes, like the sound - way too overstuffed
incredibly well produced however there are only a few albums that are 2 hours long that don’t make it feel 2 hours long this is not an example of that.
TL;DR: A few songs I recognize, a few hidden gems, a few forgettable ones.
EXTREMEMENT LONG J'AI JAMAIS FINI DSL
solid with edits it would b a 4 3/5
There were a lot of good tracks, with strong, often uplifting lyrics, but I felt there was too much filler with the two disc format. Having only been familiar with his time with the Beatles and My Sweet Lord, I enjoyed a lot of the Disc 1 tracks. However, the instrumental jam band style songs that finished out Disc 2 seemed to drag on and were not my style.
love his guitar the rocky stratocaster or whatever
A couple of bangers, but way too long and a bit pompous
Apple Music had a 23-track double-album! Listened on the plane. Really enjoyable music, given that I don’t love The Beatles’ sound that much. George Harrison definitely did a great job creating a reminiscent-but-unique sound for himself.
Typ 2,5 rundat upp.
Hari kisna
At first I thought this sounded too much like the 70s music I hate (like the Carpenters), but it wasn't exactly that and I did like some of the tracks. Still could have used a little more energy though.
It showcases George Harrison as a musical talent in his own right, he was always in the shadows of Lennon and McCarthy, yes the album is over long, the talent is unmistakable and really worth listening to, maybe not 2 hours worth.
10:31 listen 7/10 can imagine studying to this she’s cute !
Couldnt be bothered to finish. It was fine.
1970 post beatles single contributor album. Randomly had eric clapton on it? Some good songs, very of its time to me.
This channeling of new wave and pop punk was a great breath of fresh air when it arrived in ‘94. Ear candy and really well made, but not best album calibre imo.
It was catchy and chill vibes, a bit Beatles effect. I like it.
i liked this albummmmm i thought the production was beautiful on many tracks. my only complaint would be that some of the songs in the first half blended into each other but i thought the experimentation on the second half was very interesting. the instrumental tracks weren’t my favorite tho, specifically I Remember Jeep and Out of the Blue.
I liked it
I often had a thought throughout the album that this basically sounded like the Beatles but with slightly less sauce (that’ll happen without Paul and John). There are a lot of good songs in here, most of which are on disc 1. And I’m glad I trudged through disc 2, which was mostly blaaahhhhh, because the jams at the end were actually pretty cool. But I can’t support putting out a whole ass 2-hour long album. A good bit of it could have been cut easily. Respect my time plz
Long album with some very high points but still imo too long. I definitely understand why he did it, because parts 1 and 2 were literally all material Paul and John didn't like and this was his big fuck you to them. I just don't think there is quite enough variety for this to make my regular rotation.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mid review for a mid album
Good album. Some songs I had heard before. Felt a bit same-y after a while though.
Wow, Imagine by John Lennon yesterday and All Things Must Pass by George Harrison today! Sometimes I wonder how random this generator really is especially when I found out last week that a friend of mine ended up with the exact same record as me on the same day. Because of the unusual changeover time for this generator I sometimes have barely enough time to squeeze in a complete listen of the album of the day so what a shock it was to learn that this release was a triple album! Thankfully it’s the weekend so I think I’m gonna have just enough time to get this one in tonight. I’m really enjoying listening to this album. There’s a nice and warm sound to a lot of these songs with a bit of bombastic rock here and there. Definitely enjoying the mix of different kinds of songs and finding the sequencing to be spot on. He’s really proving here how under-used he was in The Beatles but if that weren’t the case then we wouldn’t have this fantastic album to listen to. Even though the jams on the 3rd LP are not really a must listen (except for the one with the weird Moog stuff!), I definitely gotta check out his other albums.
3.5
There's a lot on this album. I'd have enjoyed a more focused version.
Almost a 4 but too rambly
This was too long for me to really judge fairly. It's pretty diverse and impressive for a solo artist in the 60s/70s.
It was pretty fine
They don’t mind throwing you in the deep end with some of these! 28 songs and over 2 hours of music?!? Let’s hope it’s good (or atleast tolerable…) Almost a third of the way through and it’s fine, but more background music for me. I did recognise “My Sweet Lord” though. So far so non-offensive. The album was perfectly fine. I’d only really heard some of his 80’s solo material as it was in the charts as a teen. You can tell the styles are still fairly similar even though they were about 15 years apart. Not one I’ll be putting on any playlists, but didn’t mind listening to it.
I love the Beatles but never really enjoyed any of their solo stuff. This album is okay, there are a few decent songs but nothing that I find super exciting. It's decent but a bit boring. I only got about halfway through the whole album.
Too long. Enjoyed several songs especially Out of the Blue
I like George Harrison's vibe even when I don't always love his music. This album was better than expected. But triple album?? C'mon, that's just silly. I'll pick some since from this in the future but I'll never listen to the while thing again
I probably should enjoy it more and I felt bad for thinking of giving it a 2 and therefore bumped it simply due to the number of hits. It's just way too long and repetitive. You could cut out 2/3 out of it and it would be a great album. It's just going on and on in the same exact direction for 2 hours.
Solid solo Beatle album, didn’t realize how much George was into slide guitar until this album, and made me realize I’m more a fan of George/Paul then John/Paul
Ouais, ouais. "What Is Life", c'est un tube, point barre. Morceaux choisis : "My Sweet Lord", "What Is Life", "All Things Must Pass".
Very pleasant
I enjoyed it and it was great background music for some monotonous tasks, but it all just kind of blended together and stayed in the background while occasionally popping out.
Fine album, but again I couldn't get into it.
George! Delighted to hear.
The ex Beatle surprised us all by sounding way less Beatleish than John or Paul. There's a lot of good guitar work on here but also a general sound that I find unappealing. And it's there on every song - too much orchestration, too little variety and nuance. And long - way too long. It was a disappointment to me then, and again today.
Quite long
Always frustrating if you have to check Wikipedia to see which tracks on the reissued/remastered/anniversary edition that's on the streaming services actually make up the original album. Took me about 5 minutes here (also because there seems to have been a bonus disc with the original release). Once it gets going it's, well, quite pleasant. It sounds rather seventies to me. It is hard to imagine we're only 6-ish years after I Want To Hold Your Hand. It sounds so much more grown up. It is a very long album - even without the bonus disc and the archive material and alternative versions - with long songs. Not sure if there quite enough ideas to warrant all that time. I like the longer songs if they've got a bit of a gospel feel (the Hey Jude fade-out is fun) but a lot of the songs are just the same chord progression and melody going around and around. Still, overall quite pleasant.
There's a lot that I like, and there's a lot that I don't.
It definitely sounds like a George Harrison album. It was average at best with a couple decent songs sprinkled in there. I don't think I would ever buy the album for this
Decent
Isn't it a Pity - really cool to have the Hey Jude bits element at the end. If Not For You - just cannot feel sad when this is on. It's all going to be O K A Y when this is on. Beware of Darkness - love the hopeful chord at the occasional and unexpected key change (for e.g. after 'weeping at the cedars'). Apple Scruff - love the weirdness of this. Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let it Roll) - first of all; great name. Love the woodland sounds from each speaker. Act of Dying - really cool dangerous sound to this one - the harmonies remind me of the Beatles I WONDER WHY THAT IS. It's Johnny's Birthday - love the record slowing/speeding up effect at the start. LOVE that it ends on great instrumental songs after that.
Decent album, a couple of crackers 5/10
I’d like it so much more if they'd cut out 60% of it.
hippie dippie
Listenable, with a few standouts that make me wonder if this is where Yoko Kanno drew some inspiration for Cowboy Bebop.
This is a pretty good double album of 70s pop/rock. Most of it is consistently good, and some of it is great. Lyrics are fairly standard fare, but the album sounds good musically. It could stand to lose some of the songs(did Isn't It A Pity? really need a reprise in the second half?) The jam sessions at the back of the album go on forever and go absolutely nowhere. If they were a separate LP, they would be nowhere near this list.
WHY IS THIS TWO HOURS LONG
Meh. It's alright. 3 stars. What is life is the best song on this one.
It's all very nice and that, but I got bored - maybe because I forgot to just listen to the original version and not the collector's remastered bonus bla bla bla...
It’s good, but it’s way too long.
decent music but way too long
It's fine. It's certainly far too long, not only in overall length, but the length of certain songs, too. There's a better album in there, but it's a bit watered down and there's nothing strong enough to make up for that.
Good album, lots of hits here. I don't think I'll add any of them to my playlist, but I can definitely appreciate what's here.
It has its moments but on the whole just average
Chill album
Chill one~
hare krishna hare hare…
Not bad
Another lost review. This thing was too long. The most boring person you know’s favourite album. Also, can we stop changing track orders on classic albums for expanded editions? I don’t even know if I got every song. Good music, but a bloated release keep this from classic territory in my mind.
Belongs on this list. A clear evolution of what Harrison brought to the Beatles and an awesome technical feat for first solo album. Well orchestrated/composed. But I just don’t like it much. Really torn on rating this a 2 or a 4, so I guess 3
Some songs I really liked, some I thought were quite good, then some I didn’t like. Feels like there’s a really good album in here if it was just edited down. Wouldn’t listen to the full album again but I’d definitely relisten to the good songs from it. I did actually quite enjoy some of the instrumental tracks at the end, but thought it was odd to have an alt take of My Sweet Lord - feels like that should be on a deluxe version - unless the remastered version has more tracks? (I know there’s a deluxe version too) Fav song: My Sweet Lord Least fav: It’s Johnny’s Birthday
Really liked it to start! And then it just kept going and going and going. After I’d sat through the last three songs I’d forgotten how much I liked the start. Favourite song: My Sweet Lord Least: Out of the Blue
This album is very inconsistent because of its length. I really like half of the songs here, but the other half is very typical and unremarkable pop/folk rock. This album would've been, like, a 9 to me if it only included the best 10 songs or so. As it is, it's 100 minutes long and a bit hit-or-miss. Some songs are very fun and catchy and utilize the Wall of Sound production style incredibly well. They sound busy despite still being pretty calm lyrically, which I like. The jam band tracks at the end are also pretty cool, I guess. But the others are just whatever. 7/10
Remove a few songs and it would be a 4
If we ignore the 'ex-Beatle George Harrison' thing, where does that leave us? It is an album with a 'cast of thousands', that is too long and with over-blown Phil Spector 'wall of sound' production which also blighted 'Let It Be' by George's former band (oh no, I mentioned the Beatles again). It is drowning under a swamp of reverb. With all that, it is a miracle and testament to Harrison's song writing that some gems still sparkle. I'd love to hear a more pared-back version of this album, it would probably be really, really good. Listen to 'Beware of Darkness' for what could have been... I wished I could give this flawed gem more than 3/5, but I can't.
It’s fine.
Was ok
Was the second My Sweet Lord really necessary?
A bit unnecessary in places but some moments of genius
There were some brillant songs on here but also some absoulte stinkers.
It was alright, little bits of good stuff but too much going on.
It's good but I've never been able to get into it as much as I hoped I would
Some really good tracks on here. Think this album is one that deserves revisiting
Cool that he covers that Galaxies 500 song.
Like it, but it is too long 3/5
6/10 - very beatlesey which isnt a surprise, if you like that sound you will like this
This album is pleasant enough and the jams are on point, but I found it to be really long. The last four tracks could have been a blues rock jam album of its own. The religious themes are a bit of a turnoff for me, as someone allergic to organized religion.
George Harrison's Beatles stuff was hit-and-miss for me. Some great (Here Comes the Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps) and some pretty bad (You Like Me Too Much and The Inner Light). Here, he gets to show off what he can do outside of the Beatles' restraints, and maybe he shows off a bit too much, turning what could have been a very solid single or even double album and turns out three discs with a lot of bloat. I figured he'd still be doing some Indian-inspired stuff on this, but I don't remember hearing any. There's a lot of rock 'n' roll, slide guitar, and country-ish stuff. Good: Wah-Wah, What Is Life, All Things Must Pass, Art of Dying. The Apple Jam stuff was fine I guess; it just seemed unnecessary.
Meh. It sounds pretty but does nothing for me.
Pretty good 3/5
3.5
Goes without saying, a great songwriter and songs. ‘My Sweet Lord’ and ‘Isn’t It A Pity’ particularly stand out from CD 1 and just a pleasant, accomplished and varied enough listen. Now onto CD 2… Maybe I just prefer a shorter album. All the songs are quality but just a feeling of getting my fill after an hour. ‘Art of Dying’ stood out big time on CD2 - banger and ‘Hear Me Lord’’. And prefer version 1 of ‘Isn’t it a pity’ (3.5)
Probably one of the only post-Beatles solo records I enjoyed aside from a few select songs by McCartney
Banger
I read about this album before listening to it, so I was able to strategically skip the >10-minute instrumental songs and just listen to the popular songs from the album. I guess that means that I didn't get the full experience of the album, but I'm perfectly fine with that. As a collection of rejected Beatles songs, this album isn't bad, but it does not hit like the Beatles albums do. I should get high one day and listen to this album from front to back to see if that makes me like it any better. 3/5
Not a fan of double albums, I find them exhausting to get through most of the time. In saying that, I did enjoy quite a few songs but just wish it wasn’t so long. This album is very clearly made up of songs rejected by Paul and John during the Beatles era.
Pretty good album with a couple of incredible songs.
