Reviews (page 2 of 7)
muziek uit 1960 toen alles nog lief was. heel schattige en langzame liedjes maar erg goed in elkaar gezet.
Energetic and catchy songs about girls. Short and punchy, lots of fun.
527/1089 - Lots of variation in song types and executed well by the instrumentalists. Voice sounds a bit chipmunk-y for some reason. Can hear how they influenced the Beatles and Beach Boys.
Catch melodies and great harmonies.
Such an iconic sound and a solid album.
Weird one to score for me. My father is an over-the-top Boomer music fan. He has thousands and thousands of vinyl records, multiple jukeboxes, and speakers throughout the house I grew up in. Weekend mornings as a kid I wasn't allowed to sleep late. And "late" was 7am. So every Saturday and Sunday by 6 or 7am the turntable or jukebox was BLARING the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Beach Boys. etc. I fucking hated it. But the Everly Brothers are ingrained in my memory. I listened to this and knew every note. It's not their fault that my father is a narcissistic psychopath.. They just made nice music.
The music is solid and the harmonies are good. Yes, it was horribly outdated not five years after it came out, but as an artifact of its time this works well. A solid foundation for so much rock music. Deserves its spot here.
Great album. Their sound is so classic. Loved how short the songs were. They would get a melody setup and end the song. Made to Love, So How Come, and Love Hurts were my faves.
8/10
The style of songs that would go to Liverpool and a couple years later return as Beatlemania. 4 stars or B-.
Ok
I liked this more than I expected. You can definitely hear the influence on the early Beatles and other bands of the early 60’s. Holds up pretty well. Also, I had no idea that Nazareth’s “Love Hurtd” was a cover.
I would go on A Date With The Everly Brothers any day of the week. Cathy's Clown is the definite highlight here, but the surprising rhythmic complexity and playful melodies which always sing out in the duo's songwriting still abounds even amongst the deeper cuts.
Caught this band on the Simon and Garfunkel reunion tour. They were immaculate. Paul Simon said they were a major influence. You can hear it in the harmonies and deceptively complicated music. Real music education, really refined mixes. Feels like a band that would play at the Road House in Twin Peaks. There’s nothing to hate on. It’s an excellent example of this kind of Americana.
Good album
# Album Name: A Date With The Everly Brothers # Artist: Everly Brothers # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good album with some 60s bangers. # Top Tunes: too much / baby what you want me to do / ove hurts / lucille / cathys clown # Would I listen to it again? Yes
oldies style rock n roll. pretty good and lighthearted
David Lynch probably loved this.
They walked so Simon and Garfunkel could run.
Funny I got served this right after Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, in which they cover "Bye Bye Love." I'm familiar mostly with the Everlys' 1950s singles so it was interesting to listen to this one. It's short and sweet.
So, as someone who knows very little about the Everly Brothers, I can still see their name and know what I’m getting into. Someone can’t be surprised to get this album and be curious as to how it sounds. Now that we have that clear, let’s listen and rate it on a scale for the music of its time. And yep, just what I thought. Head and shoulders above most of the bands of their time. This is actually more bluesy than I expected. Like even if it’s only a little bit, I thought this was going to be in the Righteous brothers territory . I was wrong. I think. I don’t know much from the Righteous Brothers other than their sappy stuff.
This was short and simple, but in a good way. I really enjoyed it!
Great band, great album, Don and Phil got so many of us started on our musical journey. Who knew Roy Orbison’s “Love Hurts” was a cover
Beach boys 2.0. Which came first? If only something existed for me to check… nice album. Very consistent. I be this killed in the 60’s.
I liked this more than I thought. Maybe I have a little soft spot for them because I used to watch their TV show.
Catchy, upbeat, pop music. Full of great harmonies. My mom had this on heavy rotation in my house growing up. Solid, good time. 4/5
My Dad loved the Everly Brothers. I think he had a couple of their greatest hits albums and played them all the time when I was a kid but he didn't have this one. So it's especially weird that it starts off with a song about a father talking to his son about how Girls Are Made to Love. The ones I knew from childhood are: Lucille and Cathy's Clown. The rest were new to me. Everly Brothers deep cuts. I don't remember Love Hurts being on their greatest hits so maybe it wasn't a hit for them, but Nazareth did okay with it. After a few listens I actually enjoyed the music on some of these. That's Just Too Much has a special kind of Roy Orbisonesque sadness to it. great guitarwork. Baby What You Want Me to Do... YES! I like the way they do the blues here. The piano is fabulous w a country style guitar solo. Sigh, Cry Almost Die... I really like the guitar and the melody. It falls into one of their extra drama songs but hey.. it's a break up song. I like the music enough to overlook the emo lyrics. I'm glad he only "almost" died. At this point I'm thinking our Date with the Everly Brothers isn't going so well? Did we just break up?! I think this would have been good as the last song. Just break up at the end of the album. Lucille has such a great early rock n roll boogie groove to it. She don't do her daddy's will. Great song. Change of Heart gives me old Hank Williams country sad song vibes. key change is cool and the piano really gets into it at the end. Cathy's Clown is another one where I like the music enough to get over the emo lyrics. Great beat.
Not what I'd normally normally listen to but also wouldn't change radio station when it comes on. And you can hear how this influenced a lot of follow up music
This is my first front to back listen of an Everly Brothers record. Are the lyrics bubblegum and the substance a tad watered down? Of course! But the harmonies- that stole me! Liked much more than I had expected!
The centre of the imperial phase of their career, this album does not really match a greatest hits, but does contain a classic Boudleaux Bryant ballad in ‘Love Hurts’ and their biggest hit single in ‘Cathy’s clown’. ‘Lucille’ and ‘Donna Donna’ were other better known tracks and ‘stick with me baby’ was covered by Allison Krauss and robert plant for ‘Raising sand’. Not a remarkable album but certainly good to hear those harmonies - one of the great singles acts of that era.
Better than I expected, but then I am weak for harmonies
Fun record!
You can’t rate this low just because it’s too old
Not only were they the first great duo singers, but very few people have surpassed them since. 4/5
Sjarmeranes om enn ikke nokka som etterlate et varig inntrykk (og det e helt greit).
A classic!
Sigh, Cry, Almost Die
7/10… 60s pop / rock‘n‘roll / *1960
Album #1,046 Short and sweet and nostalgic. I enjoy it. Lucille was different enough from Little Richard's version, and pretty cool. I forgot they did the original Love Hurts, and of course there is Cathy's Clown (or Scab-faced Clown as per the misheard lyric).
Good vibes
better than expected 60's soul
Some classic songs here. Easy listening with good melodies and harmonies.
I loved this.. super relaxing to listen to and great harmonies
Pretty goid
Wow I’m pulled in immediately and transported to a different time. The vocals are so so good, incredibly clear harmonies, and the musicianship is tight. It’s so obvious why these guys were the pioneers of hunky rock stars. So talented. The song writing is catchy (although I would assume they had lots of help writing) and enjoyable. I’m honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. Eeeeeasy listening. Lyrics are basic bitch shit but like these lyrics were definitely made for the basic bitches and the harmonies and arrangement is for the nerds so everyone wins (isn’t that was pop is all about, everyone wins?) 3.9
a very enjoyable album, i can see myself listening to it often. i really loved “that’s just too much”!
4.5 stars. This album might be the happiest-sounding heartbreak record I’ve heard. sunny harmonies, aching lyrics, and it somehow feels uplifting and sad at once. Listening through, I kept thinking: this is the pre-Beatles blueprint...you can hear the DNA of what came next, but it’s already fully formed here. For 1960, this had to be absolutely transformative. Favorite tracks: Love Hurts & So How Come No One Loves Me
"A Date With The Everly Brothers" is the fourth studio album by American singing duo the Everly Brothers. Rock and roll, rockabilly, country rock and country are the Wiki-listed genres for their music as a whole. This was their second album with the Warner Brothers label. The brothers are Don and Phil Everly who both are on vocals and playing guitar. Commercially, the album reached #9 on the US Billboard Pop Albums Chart and #3 in the UK. "Made To Love" opens the album. Layered rhythm guitars. Clear tenor harmony vocals. A tom-tom drum beat. Very much a late 50's/early 60's pop song. A father's advice to his son on romance. The album takes a bluesy turn on Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me to Do." A rolling piano and blues beat. This song reminds me of the early 60's Rolling Stones. The first appearance of the married couple and songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant's "Love Hurts" is on this album. That familiar guitar riff made more famous by Nazareth in 1974. Slow and nice vocal harmonies. The painful nature of love. The Brothers take Little Richard's "Lucille" in a more rockin' and bluesy direction. The only single released "Cathy's Clown" closes the album. Guitar slashes, echoing harmonies, piano and a marching band beat. "Don't want your love anymore." He doesn't want anything more to do with manipulator Cathy. Great lead and harmony vocals by Phil and Don. Country, rock, blues, 50's/60's pop and even a waltz are the musical styles on these 12 songs written by the Bryant couple, Phil and Don Everly and several other writers. I have to admit I wasn't expecting the variety which was very welcome. Also surprising was the bluesy and rock guitar edge that the brothers can bring. All of these songs are about relationship and romance with the majority of them focusing on the darker side with heartbreak and being humiliated, let down and rejected The Everly Brothers ended up having 35 Billboard Top 100 singles, the most of any musical duo. With that knowledge, you might think a greatest hits is where to start with their music and it might be but this album is much more than just 50's/60's pop songs and also well worth your time.
i thought this was great i think lucille was the highlight.
The Chad Brothers 4.5
Every boy who has ever picked up a guitar and sang about his girl dumping him in the last 60 years has owed something to The Everlys and the template they laid down. It's a bit country, it's a bit rock and roll, a bit Johnny Cash, a bit Elvis. They harmonise like angels about teen heartbreak and adolescent lust. These boys are horny! Girls are made for lovin' (apparently), but most of them break your heart and make you their clown. You can imagine this playing on the jukebox in the corner of a diner in a David Lynch movie. Not as angst driven as someone like Roy Orbison, but still filled with drama. Cathy's Clown is the best known song here, but there's the whitest version known to man of Little Richard's Lucille and Love Hurts, later recorded by a string of others. The whole thing is over and done with in less than half an hour and it's pleasant enough.
This was a good way to start the day.
A respectable rock-and-roll album, and reminder that we hear very little close harmony in current popular music...most dual-vocalist songs seem to either have the singers as lead and backup or in some sort of dialogue with each other. When's the last time we had a There are surprisingly few hits on this album, and the one chart-topper ("Cathy's Clown") has a spark that pulls it ahead of the rest of the track list. An enjoyable and highly listenable album...if I go into a retro burger-and-malt shop, this is what I would want to hear, not the endlessly overplayed "best of the oldies".
My dad introduced me to the Everly Brothers. He played the local Oldies station on the car radio and I still have a deep abiding love for those songs even if I don't have them in regular rotation in my library. Cathy's Clown, Love Hurts and Lucille were as familiar as an old pair of jeans discovered at the back of a closet. The rest of the tracks were new, but comfortable in a familiar way. While All I Have to Do Is Dream remains the GOAT Everly Brothers in my opinion followed closely by Bye Bye Love and Wake Up Little Susie I'll revisit this album and maybe remember to slip a few more oldies into my regular rotation.
Oldies but goodies
7.5/10
My favorite Everly Bros. sing Cathy's Clown and the most painful breakup song Love Hurts make this a must buy fit your collection.
We liked it. Good kind of 50s fair.
Clean pop hits from clean pop boys. Fun to hear, like spun sugar for the ear drums
A classic. Not something I would listen to on a regular basis but, as I'm getting older, I do understand the importance and the value of these classics... it's like confort music, you know?
Cathy’s Clown and Love Hurts are stone cold classics. The Everly Brothers are a vibe which may not be for everyone. But still better than most of the Brit Pop on this list.
Who doesn't like this album, really? It has melody and really close, beautiful harmonies, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. The Everly Brothers had a major influence on The Beatles which is clear. Sure, they had a clean cut image, singing about girls, but that was the way back in the early 60s. It's a great album, which I enjoyed very much.
Such a good vibe
Przyjemne, chociaż ambitnym bym tego nie nazwała. Taka muzyka dla grzecznych dziewczynek tamtych czasów. 6.5/10 równane w górę.
This was classic bubblegummy, clean pop music. The length was great, easy to listen through multiple times. Easy 4/5 for today, but I could see my rating moving to 3 or 5 stars depending on my mood
Good harmonies, and songs that reflected simpler times (even if they weren’t); yet, it’s the subtle instrumental choices that raise these songs above the average of the times. 3.5
Nice short album. The lyrics are a weird mix of polite and overly horny, but musically everything is well constructed. I have a weakness for tracks and albums that are this short and to the point.
Nice, one of the songs sounded like pretty woman
Good. Classic. Not very exciting.
The cover of this album promises 12 great songs for listening or dancing. I feel like I should be at the malt shop playing tunes on the jukebox and keeping an eye on the waitress who is a year ahead of me in school. After all, girls are made to love. That's literally their purpose. After listening to their album, I can absolutely see how the Beatles took over America. They are the Everly Brothers, except slightly more dangerous because they did not wear V-neck sweaters and wanted the girls to love them. America was primed for them. I can also see how The Rolling Stones and the hippie movement started as well, because there is going to be a natural reaction to this album. The music is rock-ish and there are blues present in the sound. The harmonies are perfect and there are drugs to be done. This album is a cliche. It's what the Beav and his friends would listen to and it's non-threatening enough for anyone to enjoy, while also being a rock enough sound that it's okay to like the Everly Brothers. It worked on me as well. I enjoyed this album and the songs are really strong. Is there a bad version of Love Hurts? I'm sure there is and I'm sure Sheryl Crow or Guns 'N Roses did a bad version. I won't look it up, because I'm in my malt shop dream and have no time for it to be ruined. It's schmaltzy and influenced a lifetime's worth of really shitty acoustic duos who want to harmonize. It also influenced Anthony Keidis to name his child after the duo. It's outdated. It's also very good and very influential.
Cathy’s Clown is a timeless standout, and the whole album feels warm and effortless. Not playlist material for me (I’m not THAT old), but I’d absolutely live for a Jelly Roll cover of that track.
Somehow, very enjoyable and painfully dated at the same time. Still a strong 4 at least.
Love music from this era and this was no exception. Enjoyed this quite a bit
Short and sweet - enjoyable record
Beautiful production, epitomized by Always It's You. Everything is spot on. This Love Hurts shows off the tight vocal that made it so coverable. Some seriously perfect session work here. Hair gel helps.
A 4-star because these guys are just so tight and the influence is large. But personally, there's something about the '50s aesthetic (even though this is a 1961 release) that I just can't relate to. There's something about the wholesomeness that just just doesn't sit right.
I love the Everlys, especially their first two Warners albums. The production is immaculate, the material is (mostly) excellent, and their singing is perfection. I'm knocking it a star because I've never loved Made to Love and also because this one isn't as good as It's Everly Time, which is just absolute musical perfection. Then again, this one has Cathy's Clown and Love Hurts, so still pretty great. I had a two-fer CD of this one and It's Everly Time, which also included some excellent bonus tracks, and I near about wore out my copy.
They kind of sound like children, but I really like their style and their songs!
Surprised to know so many of these songs
A date with various named girls who all seem to not like the Everly Brothers. Great love songs to do-wop to. Varied sounds throughout while still staying tonally similar which I love to hear. Overall thought it was going to be a slog but it was pretty good. 8/10
The Everly Brothers were, for me, the kings of the hit single, so finding their 1960 effort, "A Date With The Everly Brothers", on an album list was unexpected. To appreciate it, you must accept it as a product of its era - the production and arrangements scream 1960. Without doing this you will be disappointed. When viewed through that lens, and appreciating the Everly Brothers signature harmonies, that inspired everyone from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, the Hollies to Simon & Garfunkel, the album (just) earns a four-star rating. The clear standouts for me were: - "Cathy's Clown": A magnificent, structurally unconventional track written by Don Everly and their career best-seller. Truly brilliant. - "Love Hurts": Making its debut here before becoming a widely covered standard. - "Baby What You Want Me to Do": A Jimmy Reed blues cover that works surprisingly well for The Everly's but it's worth checking out in Elvis’s '68 special version later! The remaining songs are solid, though I question the inclusion of their cover of Little Richard’s "Lucille." Side One 1 "Made to Love" (3/5) 2 "That's Just Too Much" (4/5) 3 "Stick With Me Baby" (4/5) 4 "Baby What You Want Me to Do" (5/5) 5 "Sigh, Cry, Almost Die" (3/5) 6 "Always It's You" (4/5) Side Two 1 "Love Hurts" (5/5) 2 "Lucille" (3/5) 3 "So How Come (No One Loves Me)" (4/5) 4 "Donna, Donna" (3/5) 5 "A Change of Heart" (3/5) 6 "Cathy's Clown" (5/5) Total - 46 Average - 3.83 150/1001 80/150 albums reviewed were new to me.
Best Song: Love Hurts This is brand new to me, except of course Love Hurts which may be the most covered song ever. I'm sure it's not but you get the idea. I was pleasantly surprised after reading that they were mostly country. This is more 50s-esque rockabilly to me. 4/5.
It's a short sweet album. It has a few covers that I really like but there isn't a whole lot to it though
Good album, it has "Cathy's Clown" on it, wich is the song that Elliott Smith references in "Waltz#2" thats an extra point
Solid harmony
Really solid. Can see why they are cited as so influential. Very nice listen, harmonies are great, nice and short album. Really solid.
I have the impression the Beatles listened to this a lot. A true harbinger of what guitar music would be like in the early '60s.
Absolute classic album. Really enjoyed this one
Esse tipo de som do fim dos anos 1950 e incio dos 1960 é inovação pura. Além de muitos clássicos sendo criados. Ótimo disco. Celest Wyvern Qing.
8/10
- musig für auti seele - schöni u cooli melodie - guet füre gmüetlech hintergrund aber o weme chli lüter wet lose u chli tänzle :)
I was hesitant about yet another old album but this was great and the vocal harmonies were really awesome
For years now I have been describing things I don't like as "puerile tripe", I think originally from a Calvin and Hobbes comic. So imagine my surprise when I came upon some genuine puerile tripe in the wild in the form of The Everly Brothers on their album A Date With The Everly Brothers. Each time I try to listen my neurons stop firing almost immediately and I have yet to even find out what girls are made for! All that said I kind of like it...
I love The Everly Brothers, just such wonderful peaceful songs. Great listen every time!
I’ve got my poodle skirt on, ready for the sock hop. Sounds like the last little bit of 50s rock before the 60s were in full swing. The OG Love Hurts was neat. All at a lovely 27 min
Reminded me of early Beach Boys
Is there a more beautiful encapsulation of teenage heartbreak? I think not.
Classic 60s bangers. 8.1/10
Un gran álbum, muchas canciones me las guardé, dentro de lo top que escuché de lo publicado de ese año. Se nota que este grupo influenció en algunos a posteriori. Gran obra.
Very pleasant. I like their voices. I knew Love Hurts and Cathy’s Clown. Easy, enjoyable listen.
Good shit. Inspired the Beatles.
I’m surprised at the number of reviews that judge the lyrics of this pop gem through a 2025 third-wave feminist lens… get over yourselves and just let the harmonies do their magic.
I’m now starting to understand that early Beatles is basically Paul McCartney wanting to be Little Richard and John Lennon wanting to be The Everly Brothers.
I’m not across Everly Brothers’ records, only familiar with the hits — and might I say, damn fond of them. They say no one can harmonise as well as siblings, and Don and Phil just might be the strongest arguement of that. This one’s smooth as satin and sharp as a blade. Every track is drenched in that unmistakable sibling blend — tight, angelic, and slightly haunted. The songwriting’s clean, the production pristine, and yet there’s something just beneath the surface: longing, ache, restraint. It’s easy to write them off as pre-Beatles bubblegum, but there’s real craft here. A date worth keeping.
Lot of presentism going on here in this list. In this instance it seems most negative views are not about the music but the moral grandstanding on what is, accepted, a dated view point around objectification. Except that just becomes a form of cultural bias and gets illogical and ahistorical, assuming that our morals are obviously superior;when it’s not like sexism and racism or in this instance objectification have been eradicated now have they, far from it. God only knows how we will be judged in our turn by our descendants. And as far as I am aware the Everlys weren’t found out to be a closet Hitler or such. So viewed as what it is a piece of music from 1960, the golden age of rock n roll. Not music or a record I know but It’s classic, so highly influential (Beach boys, Beatles) with those harmonies. The music is just superb. 4 Star
Pretty good.
yall please just try to enjoy this like it's the soundtrack to a white-ass 50s sockhop
This is one of the better pre-Beatles rock n roll in my opinion. Sure it’s meaningless, but bonus points for not being as BLATANTLY misogynistic as others.
Plenty of hum-dingers on here and only a couple of ho-hummers.
Great album start to finish, can’t believe I had never heard this before.
Now, I considered myself a Certified ’60s Hater, having had a rough time with other classic albums from that era (Pet Sounds, My Generation, etc.). Somehow, The Everly Brothers totally sidestep that hate and deliver something genuinely fun. In concept it's laughably basic - all of it's just kind of dated songs about love and girls - but it manages to be really charming in its simplicity. By the end of the record I was ready to go out and buy my girl some flowers. Very unexpected 4 from me, in a rare W for the 60s. Standouts: It's Always You • Donna Donna
Charming pair of boys
Solid 50s sound, nice harmonies. Don't get hung up on the sometimes shallow lyrics, just enjoy the vibe.
3.7 - Can't really remember tbh, I think it was okay?
A fair amount of bangers, but some of those songs are hard to take seriously anymore.
Poppy 60’s music. Everyone had this style going around. Great to listen to, love songs of course, although a lot of songs from them days teeter around being a tad bit creepy. The music is a great example o the pop charts.
don't need to tell you about the harmonies but there's some surprisingly great guitar work here too
Classy Doo-wop with some classic rapey vibes. Listening to this takes me back to the good old days when the white man prevailed and women knew their place. Dinner was always made when you got home and you spent half your day counting beans at the old 9-5 before unwinding with a 6 pack at the ball game. Your son Junior was getting straight A's and going steady with Jenny from down the road. Life is good. Since he's good at math he's planning to be an economist just like his old man, maybe work at the firm once he graduates from Duke where me and my father went. Duke's a great school, with a great basketball team now that they let the colored people play. Anyways I'm getting distracted. This is all to say that if I was at a diner and they played Made to Love I might just get down for a Bop, Jitterbug, Jive or Hully Gully.
There's no doubt this is the parents-approved version of rock n roll, with not a pants-bulge or a hips rotation in sight. This classic harmonies are consistently perfect. You couldn't fit a razorblade between them, they are so in unison and so perfectly harmonic. Their lilting country-infused approach fits very well with the electric guitars to create a real bittersweet sound. Surely an inspiration for, not just The Beach Boys, but every group that was ever to strive to harmonise. A concise album of melodic brilliance, with exemplar harmonies, interspersed with dated rock n roll variations. A couple of timeless classics here, and a couple more waiting to be rediscovered. This feels like a true album in the days when there were precious few true albums.
Incredible songwriting and harmony
I'm not sure if this album predates all the really iconic 60s music or if it's a super generic album. Fun songs and catchy tunes though. Loving the length of the songs/album. If I was a teenage boy fanning over a girl in the 60s I'd probably have this on repeat.
very good old songs
Relaxed music but dated
⭐ Rating: 3.8/5 Well-Groomed Sad Boys in Perfect Harmony It’s clean. It’s charming. It’s not trying to change the world—just trying to get their girlfriend back. And you know what? There’s something comfortingly dramatic about that.
Songs of love and heartbreak for, I imagine, the teen market. It transcends that by showcasing the Everly's stunning (and influential) close-harmony singing and by containing the first recordings of Love Hurts and Cathy's Clown.
I enjoyed this - very 60s pop - some stone cold classics too.
So much of the music I love is inspired by these songs.
Time gone by. The harmonies are flawless.
Another one I didn’t expect to be nearly as enjoyable! Great voices, fun tunes. Never gets too dull or maudlin. It’s a bit particular to the time, and perhaps not useful in all situations, but in the right moment it’s good for multiple listens.
Tuttuja sointukiertoja
reading through reviews of this album, i think a lot of the importance of the everly brothers is lost on modern audiences. yeah, this music is juvenile and a bit eye-rollingly too much about love, but it's also music for teenagers of the era. you can tie a direct line from this stuff to a lot of modern pop music. but what makes the everly brothers the most special to me is their harmonies, which are unmatched for the era and were immediately influential on a lot of their successors (the beatles, et al.). all that said, this isn't my favorite crop of songs from the everlys. but i do adore their sound and there are some Stone Cold Classics on here ('love hurts,' 'cathy's clown')
Een typisch jaren 60 album, gezellige korte liedjes van twee mannen waarvan het hart echt te vaak is gebroken. Mijn persoonlijke favorieten waren love hurts en donna donna. Zou ‘m zeker nog een keer opzetten.
Listened Before? N Great voices and a really solid album. Evokes a different time in America. My father would probably wax nostalgic over this. Unusual format, having the biggest hits buried in the middle and at the end, but hey - clearly it was a different time as I said. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Cathy's Clown, Made to Love
Pleasant listening from the Brothers <3
Sweet and innocent pop tunes. Great harmony between the brothers. Family love!
Groovy white boys with soul. Not my favorite but one of my mom's favorite and it radiates nostalgia for a time I've never seen or been to before.
4.25
Thumbs up for good old fashioned songs. It takes me back to my youth, young love and school dances. Cathy's Clown, a classic. A great album by legends.
Jolly album
I liked it a decent bit. I still like buddy holly over them but they weren’t far behind. The vocal harmonies are great and cool to hear what John and Paul were taking inspiration from. I enjoyed the guitar a lot more than I thought I would too. Rating: 4.2
Still enjoyable. Takes one back to a simpler time.
a 50s/60s ballad is going to do it for me every single time... I think that their voices mesh extremely well and they hit some really gnarly harmonies here, but those harmonies work best when they're in that slower pocket. Falls into the trap of most of this era-heartthrob album where they're essentially throwing every single concept of teenage love at the wall and hoping it sticks, but most times it does! 1. always it's you 2. made to love 3. love hurts
good vibes only
nothing beats a god old folk
A very pleasant listen. Can imagine my grandparents listening to this back in the early '60s. Music from this era is often very hit or miss, but this album hit the spot. Their voices are like chocolate melting. 4*
Man, the Everly Brothers are so good. Even as other acts from this style and period sound cheesy and whiney, the Everly Brothers will always sound so cool to me. Just perfectly executed emotional great music. Four stars.
Great harmonies and classic music of the era - in fact, it's crazy how much music would change less than a decade later. Anyway, very much singing about dating, girls, etc. I thought it was good, though not as good as Motown music of the same era; this was almost a little too Midwestern-y for me. 7/10.
Too country for my taste. Although, Lucille was fun.
great voices, wonderful harmonies
I love Love Hurts
Old but gold
That’s Just Too Much, Stick With Me Baby, Always It’s You, A Change of Heart, Cathy’s Clown are too slow
This music reminds me of hanging out with my aunts and uncles when I was a kid. Cathy's Clown is my favorite and I learned that The Everly Brothers originally sang Love Hurts. I'm always happy to hear some Everly Brothers.
Definitely no problems listening to some Everly Brothers. Great classic music. Nice to work to.
It's just a simple 50s/60s harmony heavy rock and roll. This is comfort music for me. Put it on in the background, and I'll be happy. The lyrics have a lot of the misogyny of the day loaded into them, and some of the blues licks get really old really quick. So, while it's a generally nice listen, if you start digging deeper it's not as perfect as it seems on the surface. Favorite Song(s): Stick with Me Baby, It's Always You
These boys are the 🐐s for real
what a beautiful combination of the two voices. OK its dated but the backing instrumentation is still varied. excellent album.
Lovely. There’s something charming about the innocence and authenticity of music from this era. And the sheer musicianship and craft of it. Good stuff.
Reminds me of the Beach Boys, who I know came after. Overall it was a pleasant listen, I enjoyed the early rock style. I saved a few songs for later listening. I love the crooning, it's definitely a great romantic album, but I guess that fits with the title.
Gute Musik, hat Spaß gemacht. Texte leider ein Relikt ihrer Zeit und nicht mehr standesgemäß, sonst ggf. 5 Sterne
That was a cute and quaint album. Going to add it to the romantic weekend at the cottage folder
Really like this. I already liked Cathy's Clown but the whole album was very nice
I know it seems like splitting hairs, but I don’t take a great interest in rock ‘n’ roll before 1964. (Blues, yes.) But I must admit, this sounds pretty good. Not sure if it is the magic of remastering, but the music was strong and the half hour was enjoyable.
Melodic, tones, simplistic
About as charming as this kind of pre-Beatles music gets. You can really hear the influence on the early Moptops, right? 'Cathy's Clown' sounds pure Merseybeat. Also, it's a lovely, lovely song. Such a nice rendition of 'Love Hurts' too, better than the ball-squeezing version by Nazareth that I'm familiar with. What's being implied by the album cover, eh?
Many of teh musicians I grew up with and still love today always gave props to these two boys. It's of its time (the lyrics have that late 50's early 60's creepiness occasionally) but you can't fault the importance or the tunes. Best Tracks: Baby What You Want Me To Do; Lucille; Cathy's Clown
This album exists in that strange microcosm of pre-Beatles ‘60s and utilizes the conventions of the era perfectly. With some fantastic originals and charming covers of country and blues tracks, The Everly Brothers single-handily (or double-handily if you will) craft THE early 60s pop rock album.
Who's horny ass BOOMER grandma put this on the greatest albums of all time. ME FELLA, IM THAT HORNY ASS GRANDMA, THIS SHIT SLAPPED, Made to love is sweet corny and camp, That's just to much whips you into the feels, Sigh, Cry, Almost Die, is a MAJOR BANGER It's always you gave me butterflies and is an astoundingly beautiful love song. Lucille makes me wanna get up and dance. Donna, Donna is another great track which constantly brings me back. And Cathy's Clown's country sounds add the perfect touch to end the album on. Such a short, sweet and ENERGETIC romp. I'm giving it an 8/10 or now cause I don't think it's a Masterpiece or anything but it grows on me every listen and I could see it very easily climbing to a 9/10
Great album that gets stronger as it progresses. The latter half is filled with absolute bangers (Live Hurts, Lucille, Donna Donna and Cathy’s Clown as the highlights). The amount of under the poodle skirt hand action this soundtracked must have been mind blowing. Good shit. I’ll have another.
Solid. Dated?
I'd let these two 1950s smokeshows take me to the drive in on a date anytime ;)
The best two-part harmony you'll find anywhere. I mean, I can't reasonably give this a 5 considering the jarringly dated lyrics ("Girls, girls, girls were made to love / That's why some have eyes of blue / That's why some stand five feet two" - oh no). And from a modern perspective, the sound is just so simplistic and doesn't feel very fresh or creative. But other than that, there isn't much to complain about. The harmonies are great, giving me heavy vibes of early Lennon-McCartney. You can easily see the huge influence the Everly Brothers had on the Beatles' early music. And given the prospective influence of the Beatles on essentially every single pop/rock predecessor, we can trace the lineage back to these two guys right here. Pretty cool, eh? Even other huge legends of (roughly) the same era – the Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, and so on – clearly took inspiration from this style. Every song here is at least a 6/10 – an impressive feat for any album. The instrumentation is pretty, pillowy, and perfect in the ballads, and punchy and powerful in the more upbeat pop tracks. The vocal harmonies are great. Did I mention I like the harmonies? (I guess I'm a teenage female boomer. Darn.) 4/5 Key tracks: Made to Love, Lucille, Love Hurts, Cathy's Clown
Pretty nice album!!
Sounds old these days but still some nice tracks great vocals
Surprisingly enjoyable
Nothing annoys me more than people whining about how guys liking girls is misogynistic. So the main complaint people seem to have with this record doesn't bother me. Harmonies on this are solid. Great example of cool old early sixties music. Golden oldies baby!
What a record. Great songs. Great instrumentation. Perfect harmonys Always it’s you- great song I’d like to learn. Didn’t know this one. Includes ‘Love Hurts’ 💔Ends with Cathy’s clown. ❤️ Learnt about felice/bryant- husband and wife songwriting team
A really good retro pop album, enjoyed this for what it is. Obviously can’t stand up to classic albums from 1965 onwards, but still good for its time, and makes my frequent rotation.
Listening to albums from this time is funny for me, because I wouldn't choose to do so, but when I do, I think it triggers something in my brain that has second-hand nostalgia just from a lifetime of that US history being passed down from old tv/movies (Happy Days, Grease, etc) and elementary school musicals (Beach Boys). Plus, there are just so many classic and powerful songs, some that have been redone by other artists just due to the great lyrics.
A Date With The Everly Brothers and they really go on about their exes.
What a cute album. Favourite songs: Made To Love, That's Just Too Much
How can you really dislike the Everly Brothers.. Pop rockabilly form a by gone era. It's fun to toss this on and listen to but unless you over 75 it's not in your regular rotation.
Sure it’s dated and kind of corny but it set a course for pop to come. A fun listen.
I think I liked this more, and maybe a lot more, than I expected based on the album cover. Early rock-n-roll/pop. You can hear where The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and countless other bands were influenced by these guys. Sure some of the lyrics and musical styings are very dated, but it's almost 65 years old at this point. I'd listen to this one again.
good old stuff. 4 stars
Cool
Listening to this record one can hear what’s to come next in rock & roll…the brothers were an obvious influences to the many…
i liked the album very much
I was ready to dismiss this. But damn! It slaps!
Thx
OK, two straight days of tossing me back to a time period well off my radar growing up. I was, however, thoroughly impressed with the melodies and harmonies of The Everly Brothers. This album contains the original version of "Love Hurts", a song we've all heard 1,000 times (and probably even know most lyrics to), and the OG version is just as good as the power ballad version that was made popular. There's just a "happy" vibe with the music that seemed very obvious looking back, making all songs pretty easy to digest. They're all bite sized too, all clocking in under three minutes. Good stuff, overall!
This is delicious, but I bet there are better EB albums.
Good
One of the albums of the 60s I've liked the most! Good vocals, chill atmosphere overall. Others from this era have come off as lonely, sad, or showing off cultural sensibilities no longer acceptable. I feel like this one aged well.
Thought this was p good for how old it is. the voices are a bit annoying kind of and some of the songs kinda just remind me of interacting w/ a girl who is super whiny and thinks everyone else is the problem not her. But overall enjoyed the energy I think 7/10
Solid early rock n roll.
What do you MEAN Love Hurts has been by the Everly Brothers this whole time???
Caught this band on the Simon and Garfunkel reunion tour. They were immaculate. Paul Simon said they were a major influence. You can hear it in the harmonies and deceptively complicated music. Real music education, really refined mixes. Feels like a band that would play at the Road House in Twin Peaks. There’s nothing to hate on. It’s an excellent example of this kind of Americana.
I, to my surprise, enjoyed this album. I like the vibe it brought and the harmonies were really nice to listen to. I would definitely listen again, it was cute and interesting.
I liked this album.
Actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would
Pretty tight. Zevon later played with these guys and I seem to recall they were jerks from his bio? Maybe not. I knew their harmonies were a big influence on the beatles, but this makes it evident they influenced them a lot more than that in terms of song choice and song structure. Harmonies are great though. Love Hurts!
Lots of great songs nice harmonies especially
Baby what you want me to do ist mein Lieblingslied auf dieser Scheibe.
Really good album. The had amazing harmonies together.
Interesting early rock album. Some pretty catchy tunes but not exactly my style. Probably just on the "4" side of a 3.5 for me.
Hope they call me back for a second date
Pretty nice album for what it was at the time. As I said with buddy holly, it would have been great to be around at the time of these artists to experience them as the scene evolved. Listening today I can't get past hearing these as oldies and just have to take the word of what I read about their influence in the timeline of music. Favorite track " Love Hurts" 3.5/5
Oldies but goodies
Actually quite good!
Really fun! If you were to reduce the Beatles sound to a formula, it might be something like: Crickets rhythm section + Chuck Berry guitar + Everly Bros vox
Really enjoyed this and not just because my 6th grade science teacher, Phil Everly, was their cousin. Their version of Love Hurts is esp great, though nothing can rival the Parsons / Harris version. I also like Lucille a lot--perhaps a tip of the hat to Pretty Woman?--not sure of the chronology. Only the first song and the album titled seemed dated to me.
Solid all the way through. Wish there was more diversity in the songs as you don't get much shakeups in any second halfs.
I liked this way more than I expected I would.
Love hurts, love scars, love wounds and mars Any heart not tough nor strong enough To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain Love is like a cloud, holds a lot of rain Love hurts I'm young, I know, but even so I know a thing or two I've learned from you I've really learned a lot, really learned a lot Love is like a stove, burns you when it's hot Love hurts Some fools rave of happiness Blissfulness, togetherness Some fools fool themselves I guess But they're not fooling me I know it isn't true, know it isn't true Love is just a lie, made to make you blue Love hurts Ground zero for so much that came later. 4/5
Un lindo álbum para empezar a conocer a los Everly y la música de ese estilo.
This is a really fun rockabilly album! I love that the songs are short and don't repeat for no reason. Well crafted song structure and great vocals. A lot more fun than most of the stuff I've heard from that time period, and the lyrics are clever and funny. A few slow ones/duds for me, but really neat overall! Fav tracks: Sigh, Cry, Almost Die, So How Come (No One Loves Me), Stick with Me Baby
This was great. Like the first rock and roll album that's fully pop
3.6
Contains some legendary tracks!
Such a vibe. If I was a teenage girl in the 60s I'd est this shit up and im eating it up rn. Like sigh cry almosy die and how come no one ever loves me are such bops and are so real
Classic
¡Qué bien cantan!
An institution, and influenced *so many* others.
Por ahora el que más me ha gustado. Todas suenan a "Dream"
I can hear almost every pop rock song from the 60/70/80s in this music. Especially The Beatles
Quite good. Has come classic songs.
The guitar reminds me of Buddy Holly. There's some interesting originals. Not totally wowed by it though.
¡Qué bien cantan!
Cath's Clown of course. Topp tune.
I should have listened to this with a frosty milkshake and a hamburger.
Not the most challenging listen, but this really opens up once it gets going. Graceful and tender.
Beautiful harmonies from this early rock and roll duo. The sort of music I like to put on in a sunny morning having coffee. Couple of singles I enjoyed particularly - I only knew Cathy’s clown going in which I find a little plodding in tempo but I enjoyed their slower more melancholic tunes more - Always it’s You and Love Hurts. Similarly ploddy but just gave me the feelings.
Very enjoyable listen. Classic songwriting. Pure and simple.
This is "Cathy‘s Clown" from the Elliott Smith song Waltz #2 (XO). That song just kills me, maybe he’s trying to evoke that wholesome world he can’t survive in (normalcy?).
The lyrics have aged worse than milk in a greenhouse, but the melodies & harmonies are still great & it stands as a good testament to a very different & bygone era.
Dang, those harmonies!! No Beatles w/o those. This album is really great, especially for an album from 1960 when pop music albums were mostly fodder with a few hot singles. The blatant sexism is a little backwards lol "girls are made to love?!" Lol overall quite solid though!
Fun, a little like the Beach Boys and others of that era. 4.5
I like a lot of The Everly Brothers' music, and this album has a lot of great songs. Their influence reaches far and wide on their contemporaries and countless musicians that followed in rock and pop and other genres. I learned more about them as musicians and people in Andrew Hickey's remarkable podcast, A History Of Rock Music In 500 Songs, as quite a few episodes reference them, and at least two episodes -- Episode 56: "Bye Bye Love" and Episode 88: "Cathy's Clown" (which is on this album) -- are devoted to them. It's painful at times to learn about the very difficult relationship between the two brothers throughout their lives, even up to their deaths, and of course, it's fascinating to learn about them as artists and realize how much they contributed to the music that followed.
Good aonhs
Listened Before? No Album Art: 4 / 5 (honestly, I love the phone booth shot. Its so odd. Are they scheduling the date right now?) Starts off with some early days RnR with surf influences on Made to Love. High quality production and a great voice on lead. Hands over to a ballad of lost love with That's Just Too Much. Quality harmonizing with sparse Spanish-influenced backing. Four songs in there are a lot of references to "baby" on this album. Baby What You Want Me to Do carries a standard blues progression with keys sprinkled in the background. I love Always It's You. Reminds me of a Japanese Breakfast song that I can't quite place right this moment. Between the sparkling key line and echo-laced, drugged out guitar, this song feels like the embodiment of a dream. I had no idea that Love Hurts by Nazareth was a cover. Such a different vibe here. I like both versions, but this one has so much better layering. A Change of Heart reminds me in all the best ways of Flying Burrito Brothers. Beautiful song. I'm way more into this album than I expected. For an album called "A Date with the Everly Brothers" they spend most of their time lamenting lost love or exploring pain brought about by love. I love that none of the songs on here feel forced and they range from folk country to surf rock and straight and narrow RnR. Vocally, the Everly Brothers are fantastic with beautiful harmonies and the production quality is top-notch. While I won't go back to this often, it was a perfect start to the week for me and had me wishing we could roll back the clock to these simpler days. This is a high 4 / 5 for me. Just not quite enough magic to push all the way. Added to Library? Songs Added to Playlists: - Always It's You (Rainy / Tired) - Love Hurts (Rainy / Tired) - Change of Heart (Sunny-vibes)
Love the harmonies and the 60s’ vibes. Also had no idea that Love Hurts by Nazareth is a cover song, so there’s that. 😂
Pleasant
Okay, I guess.
Classic. Beautiful harmonies and simple love songs that stand the test of time. 4 stars.
Hello, today I learned that many of these songs were older than I thought they were.
The simple arrangements mark the period/time when musicians performed good, wholesome music. Beautiful harmonies and wholesome rock 'n' roll!
Not my usual vibe at all but honestly I can dig it. The production is super clean for an album from 1960 (even considering the fact that I listened to a remastered version). Love Hurts is a classic song.
It was nice
Phil and Don gave us some of the sweetest, purest harmonies ever recorded in popular music, and that alone is enough reason to listen to this album. But the simple tuneful songs are early rock n roll at its finest.
There's something vaguely rootsy in listening to this, and it's not at all square, if also not outrageously hip.Yes, it's sounds old-fashioned but there's a likable crispness and directness of attack that comes off as authentic and substantial. Plus, it's easy to see how they were credible competitors for Elvis.
Much cooler – that is to say much less square than one expected.
Unbelievably influential early 60s rock act. They can harmonize with the best of them and convinced everybody else they should harmonize too. Seems dated by todays standards but revolutionary for its time. Essential Tracks: Cathy’s Clown (Added to playlist) Love Hurts Lucille
Lovely
Wait like both of them at the same time
Iconic tunes, so familiar and timeless. A bit samey in places to be honest but it operates under different rules to nowadays.
Pretty peerless in the filed of 50s-60s teen crooner pop. Not really my jam though I recognize it's place. A little treacly.
Nice album. Simple but good
очень коротенький, люблю такой формат
¡Qué bien cantan!
¡Qué bien cantan!
Clasic. The whitest of white rock and roll. Every song a 2 minute hurricane that could fit on a single. A shape of its culture shaping the future. Bonkers. A snake eating its own tail. Still. Cathy's Clown. 🤷🏽♂️
I am, admittedly, a sucker for this type of music. I do appreciate that this album feels like an album, as opposed to some of the older stuff on this list, where it feels more like, "We made a hit and now have to try to capitalize on that again." It's got roots in country, blues, and pop. It's pleasant. Favorite tracks: "Always It's You", "Love Hurts", "Lucille"
Simple is sometimes all you need – the compositions are solid and well-crafted, the vocals stellar, the emotions genuine, and the production crisp and clean. This album doesn’t need much more to feel effective and lived-in, and while I’m sure it’s been remastered to hell in recent times damn does it sound nice (studio-grade even).
Nice and easy to listen
Cute songs, I liked a lot more than i disliked
I was born in 1980 but I have the overwhelming urge to hop into my jalopy and hang out at the milkshake bar.
Pretty good album, pretty much expected that the songs here are all about dating, love, and girls. Favorites would be Stick with Me Baby, Always It's You, and A Change of Heart. It's pretty short but it has good points. 7.8/10
I had my aunt's old record collection when I grew up in the 80's, so listened to a lot of fifties music growing up. This has some real classics in it. Very cheesy, but very enjoyable once you get over that.
Sounds like a cardigan sweater and some penny loafers. 4 stars.
Great harmonizing, short run, and enjoyable to listen to.
The harmonies here are amazing. Pretty enjoyable love album. Certainly would be a good date night album.
Lovely harmonies, disturbing lyrics. Bit of a sense of melancholy....
What makes "A Date with the Everly Brothers" even more remarkable is how its sound is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Bands like Lord Huron have embraced a similar musical aesthetic, incorporating vintage influences and lush harmonies into their own contemporary compositions. With its blend of rockabilly, country, and pop sensibilities, "A Date with the Everly Brothers" remains a classic example of the Everly Brothers' artistry and their lasting impact on popular music. Couldn't have been more surprised how much this album worked for me!
High level late 50s schoomzy love pop. Making the girls of the 50s/60s swoon. Great harmonies, simply cheesy classic pop. Songs are very short
Not exactly an album act, but they deserve to be on every list like this. You can't tell the story of modern music without Phil and Don Everly, whose in influence is heard on countless classic albums that followed. Their version of "Love Hurts" isn't the most famous, but it's up their with the Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris version.
Its usually hard for me to positively review music from this era, unless its Buddy Holly or Roy Orbison however I enjoyed this album. I think partly because the sound is pretty good , but the songs are good as well. The ballads are enjoyable for their classic songs like Cathy's Clown and Love Hurts are fantastic. And then there are those luscious vocal harmonies. 4 stars
What's not to love. Great harmonies, great songwriting. So much fun.
Nice enough
Great. Sincere lyrics, well constructed pop tunes
Hmm, a tough one. I don’t think this is something I’d revisit often but I appreciate the brevity and Love Hets is a classic and Cathy’s Clown is actually fantastic and sounds like something that could have come out recently. So based on those 2 I’ll give it a light 4.
It was refreshing to have a nice short and sweet 27-minute album since I feel like I've been getting a lot of longer albums recently. This was just good old-fashioned blues and that's just too much was my fav.
Really love this era of reverb soaked harmonised pop and it’s probably because of David Lynch
Excellent pre-Beatles pop. Best song Lucille
Blew my mind that they did the original recording of “Love Hurts”. Enjoyed their harmonies.
Soothing and pleasurable to listen to
Even though the songs do feel a bit dated, they still work pretty well. There's only one or two songs that I knew (the last one, and "Love Hurts" which was a nice stark version of that piece). But the other songs worked with the counterpoint of each singer. It was good for what it was. The songs were short and to the point. I dug it, and even though it was dated, it was enjoyable.
This was an enjoyable classic album. It was a treat to hear the studio musicians such as Chet Atkins and Floyd Cramer back up the Everly Brothers. I'm not sure why the wiki page doesn't mention them and the other musicians, considering they're on the back of the record sleeve. The brother's vocals are tight and spot on as well. I can totally hear their influence on the Lennon / McCartney harmonies here. Favorite track overall is probably “Made to Love” (mainly for the guitar though) but I enjoyed every track on here and was surprised that “Cathy’s Clown” was the only single because most of this album sounds like it could have charted. I am looking forward to checking out more of their stuff so a definite 4 stars here.
Love their harmonies. It's all pretty basic rock and roll, but they sound fantastic. I'm not clear on why the authors chose this album for the 1001 albums and not the Everly Brothers debut album, which includes classics "Bye Bye Love" and "Wake Up Little Susie." Still, this is definitely a good album. Favorite tracks: Love Hurts (I didn't know they debuted Love Hurts - they didn't write it though), Lucille (Little Richard cover), Cathy's Clown (great harmonies again). Some tracks were cheesy: Made to Love ("girls, girls, girls were made to love." Motley Crue has nothing on the Everly Brothers), "Sigh, Cry, Almost Die" just made me think, "gee, it's tough to be a teenager." And I'm sure lots of teenyboppers screamed when they sang "So How Come No One Loves Me." Anyway, calling it a 4 for their fantastic harmonies.
jai envie de me peter le crane mais je pense qu’un dimanche en allant au marché de Noël c’est un solide 4 pour moi
I thought it was pretty good. A quick upbeat album with a nice sound to it.
the most surprising record i've listened from this, this was a really good pop album. i really enjoyed most of the tracks, my biggest gripe is the songs that fade out :) 8/10
phenomenal.
This album is great. Sure, it's dated, but there is a lot of great stuff here. Great harmonies, great guitar work. I enjoyed this one.
Picked Sigh, Cry, Almost Die as the Song of the Day
Solid
Can definitely hear the roots of the early Beatles and many other groups in this. Great listening too.
