Reviews (page 4 of 7)
A short album with fun songs. Probably won’t revisit but an interesting listen from a music history standpoint
Fun little album , can see myself having a drink and dancing with my bby to this
I got these guys mixed with the Isley Brothers. Thought it was the black soul singers. I do know of these guys. I remember my grandparents playing this. Not my style but I respect it.
This probably went hard AF in the 60’s
A Date with the Everly Brothers was so charming and delightful, and so was the album title. The Everly Brothers had wonderful voices that wash over you. The entire album was a pleasant listen as they crooned love songs. I can't help but feel many songs were bland though. Nothing was memorable, not even the original version of "Love Hurts."
No argument with The Everly Brothers belonging on here. They had such a charming sound that wooed listeners throughout the 60s. I don't know enough of their music to know if this was the best album of theirs to feature, but I do know that "Cathy's Clown" is one of their most well known songs, and no doubt for good reason. There's some great rhythm, vocals, and harmony to be found here. I found the opening track, "Made To Love", to be a cute and charming opening track, too. All in all, an easy to listen to album from an incredibly influential band (so many harmonizing groups of the 60s got the idea from these guys).
Not bad, overall the same type of 60's "rock" over and over again. Solid 6/10
Ok 3.1
Solid. I mean this is about 30 minutes of bittersweet lovesick pop music from the early '60s, and that's all it is honestly. Some good songs, but many that didn't really standout. The songs tend to blend into one another generally, little variation here (I mean just listen to the cliche rock and roll guitar progressions on 'So How Come' and 'Baby What You Want Me to Do' - they're practically identical) but it's short enough so it never really gets to the point where it's grating. My favorite songs by the end were 'Made To Love', 'Stick with Me Baby', 'Love Hurts', 'Donna Donna', and 'Cathy's Clown'
This was very pleasant, with s very nice old skool vibe. A high water mark of its time that borrowed heavily from black culture and repackaged it for a white audience.
I had to laugh out loud reading some of the reviews for this album. People had a problem with the lyrics to these songs? 😂 If you’re truly offended by the lyrics to Made to Love then I really REALLY hope you never listen to rap or hip hop, or country or pop music for that matter, never watch movies and never read any books from today if you found this so inexcusably offensive. Seriously I’m dead 😂 Anyway, I love a lot of music from the 60s and I especially like the simplicity of the early 60s. This album isn’t a showstopper but it’s good and it was an enjoyable listen from start to finish with nice harmonies. And honestly, I’d’ve gone on a date with the Everly Brothers. We’d talk on the phone and they’d tell me that I was the prettiest girl in school and I’d giggle and twirl the phone cord around my fingers.
Album 860 of 1089 The Everly Brothers - A Date With The Everly Brothers (1960) Rating : 3 / 5 Back to the basics today with The Everly Brothers, who were some of the first music I ever remember hearing as a young guy. Their harmonies still hit just right, and the simple tunes carry a charm that doesn’t wear out. This one features the classic “Cathy’s Clown” and a bunch of ballads about dating, love, and love lost. They’ve always done that well. A nice listen and a bit of a return to where it all started for me.
Nice tunes thanks
I never listened to a full rock'n'roll album before, but this was a easy and enjoyable album to listen to. The vocals go really well together with the guitar rythms. Song 7 - Love Hurts was a song i somehow recognized (but not really), turned out this was the first appearance of the later famously covered Nazareth version. Overall the album was not outstanding for me personally, but still quite good.
I got a cavity from listening to this album.
Pretty entertaining if a little formulaic. Very samey sound throughout the album, but it is well produced and enjoyable enough. Shorter runtime also helps keep things moving without getting bogged down in repetitiveness. Solid overall listen. Top tracks: Always It's You, Love Hurts, So How Come (No One Loves Me)
Overall: 6/10 This album is like you and your brother pouring each other a glass of milk and sitting on your porch and catcalling every girl that passes by. Pretty much every song is about how girls are made for loving. Lyrically outdated but these white boys can sing a tune and the music itself had my head bobbing along. Fav Song: Love Hurts Least Fav Song: Donna, Donna
Cheesy 60s rock n roll. Inoffensive MOR, cute voices.
I do not find a lot of value in this style and I do not find value at all at the lyrics of this album. As everyone points out, the constant themes of love can get tiresome, and in some occasions, the lyrics are just awful. The main example being the first track stating that women were only created to love. Maybe an accepted believe by then, but today absurdly dated. One more thing that irritates me are some tracks having this fast fade out. They are abrupt and make the songs feel unfinished. What I do find likeable about this record are the clean production and the performance, which they add this rather pleasent tone to the whole project. With all the songs having the same ideas and the album a monotone style, I do not have anything more to add.
Meh. Like it wasn’t bad but I didn’t love it either
Beautiful sound but still not really something is find myself listening to in rotation.
Average songs brilliant voices.
Pre Beatles guitar duet. Hearing the Beatles right after was contrast- EB prob sang someone else’s lyrics
This was pretty good, old style, 3.5/5
Pretty good stuff for the time period it was released. Definitely dated tho
This period is the rare exception when greatest hits will suffice. The album hasn't really come into it's full potential yet
Good
Classic and clean early rock and roll. Nothing to dislike.
Not bad for some oldies shit
A perfectly charming and forgettable album. Standout was So How Come (No One Loves Me) - normally whiny songs are not my taste, but this was quite the bop.
This record had some nice songs for a short album. The harmonies between these two fellas was pretty great. The subject matter gets a tad bit old every now and then but if you can ignore that then this is a pretty good album honestly. Top 3: Love Hurts, Cathy's Clown, and Always It's You No bad songs 3-3.50/5
This album will give you A Change of Heart.
3 reten.
tekstueel niet altijd in orde (all girls are made to love?)... muzikaal wel te pruimen
Puzzled as to what to give this. Really kind of zoned out…maybe a low 3?
this is the silly crooner puppy love music my mom and aunts listened to, so much of it that it all blurred together for me hearing it so much over time. Its sweet, inoffensive, and the title "A Date With The Everly Brothers" legitimately makes me laugh.
Some nice bubble gum pop music from a couple of heartthrobs from the 60s. Doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression but it was enjoyable in the moment
When I read biographies of my favourite musicians nearly all of them cite one of their biggest influences are the Everley Brothers. Unfortunately I do not share their enthusiasm but when my hero’s state that they wouldn’t have got where they are without the Everley’s I do have to take note. I have heard most of the tracks on this album many times and it is standard late 50’s and early 60’s music. I can understand why the mega stars who were about to flourish were influenced by this as it is light years away from what went before. So as a historical musical document it does deserve a place on this list although not a personal favourite of mine. 3/5 1/7/25
Low key kinda bopped
Good old fashioned rock and roll. It’s easy to see the roots.
They deserve their place for how influential they were. The British Invasion didn't just re-serve the US the blues and rock and roll it also re-served the Everly Brothers. Having said that I think The Beatles improved the further they got from the Everly Brothers influence.
Fun I guess
Tight harmonies and vapid lyrics.
Nostalgia, easy to listen to, beautiful harmonization. It’s interesting to hear what preceded The Beach Boys and the Beatles in the evolution of pop. 3⭐️
Didn't like this one as much as others of this time and genre.
Great oldies album.
I really do enjoy quite a lot of the music of this era but The Everly Brothers were never really my thing. I actually found this to be pretty lackluster and boring. I didn't know that "Love Hurts" was their song originally so this loses tem points because they are ultimately responsible for Nazareth's assault to my ears with their cover 16 years later.
I like two of the Everly Brothers tracks. Neither were on this album. They’re on, but clearly of their time
Fun 60s Flashback
Solid album, very short
A couple bops on here. These guys were real thirsty for some women though wow.
Bluesier than expected
It is so perfectly ok. At least it's short and quick!
Like just music from the 60s, it's deeply inoffensive and a little simple. But it still put a smile on my face - and sometimes that's all you want music for.
It was about as ok as a 1960 album could be. A lot of the bands from that era just kinda blend together in my mind and sound the same. At least it was under 30 minutes.
Strong influence on The Beatles here but did not stand out to me too much. I think most of its value is in being able to say that it was influential on other artists, not that it's particularly good by itself.
honestly generic asf but it’s rly fun soo :)
Thoughts before listening: The Everly Brothers were an extremely popular group from the earliest days of rock n roll. I am expecting very poppy/cheesy songs with nice melodies and harmonies. Review: This is exactly what I expected. Pleasant little 2 minute ditties about love with a bit of a country feel and really nice harmonies. It's hard to hate on this. One thing that's always a little weird with the very early artists on this list is that they weren't necessarily known for their albums. They were mostly focused on releasing singles to radio so we mainly know them for their greatest hits style packages. It's weird listening to an album of 12 songs by the Everly Brothers and only recognizing a few songs. Those songs are all timers though ("Love Hurts" and "Cathy's Clown"). Those are 5-star songs on a 3-star album.
old pop music, good but way below the average old stuff on here
Other than the first song, all of these songs are all like "why am I so sad" and "why does love hurt" and "why am I so lonely" and "why don't women like me". Ok, so go back to that first song and it's basically a dad explaining to his son that women are objects of affection and nothing more. PUT IT TOGETHER BRO. Oh sorry, BROS.
Funny, cheesy, harmonies, not much substance and sexist in today's age, but sonically pleasing to the ear.
now why was this on this list. answer me
well, at least it's short! these boys may seem jovial on the surface with their light sock hop fare and breezy harmonies, but when you pull off the scooby doo mask? BAM! misogyny favorites: made to love (perhaps the worst offender), love hurts, cathy's clown
Lots of fun, I guess. Not my style, but then again, what is?
3/5
Elvisy and sounds cheesy like it's from the late 50s early 60s, because it is. Basically blues songs.
Slatke 60e 🥰 dragi su mi oni skroz, baš feel good old school rockabilić. 3/5, 6/10.
Enjoyable 60s pop, very of its time but some good songs
It's aged really well, but that style of music still just doesn't ring for me.
As far as 50's early white guy rock and roll goes this is pretty good. The subject matter is of course about "boy and girl" but the music is surprisingly varied and well composed. The vocal harmonies are absolutely perfect and you know it's real because pitch correction didn't really exist in the form it does today. It's nice. Cheesy but nice.
I currently have a soft spot for early 60's Americana juke box pop - like Made to Love. The slower tunes are bit too saccharine for me. Lovely harmonies but dated lyrics.
Sure, the bulk of the lyrics haven't aged well, but I don't think that should be the takeaway from this album. The Everly Brothers offer some amazing vocals and harmonies (remember, this a time before the technology to "fix" the recordings existed, this is au naturel!). The songs are sweet and charming, and the album is short and succinct. I will echo another person's criticism though and say it does seem like they didn't seem to know how to end the songs as they all abruptly fade out in the middle of a chorus. Maybe this is a decision that was made to conform to the physical media format available at the time?
Boring covers of popular songs but sound good as background music
It’s kind of slow, but it’s a nice background album. But I discover thanks to this album that “Love hurts” it’s not originally from Nazareth.
Classic tunes, classic hits and classic waves.
Solid do-wop pop. These guys made it short and simple. Nothing too complicated here.
Nothing complicated here. Simple melodies, sweet songs about love and yearning and heartbreak. Also... because it's nothing complicated, each song sounds very similar. Musically, they're different, but I'd like a little depth in the emotion. Maybe a little about Dad's coming home from Korea and he's not quite the same. Something more. Come on, guys. My Rating: 3/5
Easy listening background music 5/10
3.5
Better than the beach boys
4/22/2025: classic, very good
Each song is the same. I know why it's on the list which is more than I can say for some of the albums on this list.
Too sugary for me but perfectly fine
I like certain Everly Brothers songs (they have some utter classics), but they don't have much range. It's an okay listen if you like 50's pop bands.
It captures the late fifties, early sixties vibe well enough. You can see where their vocal harmonies were leading things at the time.
Undoubtedly influential to the sound of thr early to mid 60s (looking at you early Beach Boys and Beatles albums). However, it just doesn't really offer anyrhing all that exciting or interesting in retrospect. It is very short though so it never out stays it's welcome.
Yeah it’s predictable and exactly what I expected from this genre but it’s still nice listening. Just wish older bands experimented more. I’m so sick of that tired ass rock n roll chord progression (looking at you Lucille)
Jolly album, of its time and finishing with one of the great songs of all time.
Like okay
Enjoyed this album, but small criticism, they really don't know how to end a song; fade out is a lazy way to finish pretty much every song.
Extremely clean cut, but my god these bastards could harmonise. A classic for a reason.
I'm not fussed either way by this album, apart from their massive hit "Cathy's Clown" - which is great - the rest of the album is meh!
This was pretty good! Made To Love starts off nice, very cute song. Baby What You Want Me To Do has nice music. The rest of the album is nice, fun to hear. Best song: Made To Love
Incredible harmonies and voices. A bit dated in terms of subject matter, but enjoyable anyway.
Crazy how they took inspiration from Benson Boone for Sign Cry, Almost Die
The initial phase of rock and roll had come and gone and The Everly Brothers were a solid foundation to lead on. A nice date with them doesn't sound like a bad time to be had and they made the time worthwhile. Twelve songs, less than thirty minutes, mostly killer. Surely some nice fellows you can take home to Mom and Dad. Favorites: Made to Love, That's Just Too Much, Sigh, Cry, Almost Die, Always It's You, Love Hurts, So How Come (No One Loves Me), Donna, Donna, Cathy's Clown.
Pretty songs, but apart from the banger that is "Love Hurts" (wasn't aware that Nazareth were doing a cover), nothing too remarkable.
forgettable
This was fine. A bit old fashioned for my taste. Lovely vocal harmonies though. The first song is a bit skin crawling to a modern ear
Not my style
3.5. I enjoyed this
It's meh. Some of the guitar effects were cool though. Favorite Tracks: That's Just Too Much, Baby What Do You Want Me To Do 2.5/5
Love hurts it’s such an incredible song, and I had not listened to their version. The rest of the album is pretty but less memorable.
An album 3.5 ratings were made for, rounded down.
I was expecting something very samey, but it wasn't. Quite good actually. Favorite song: stick with me baby
Short, simple, enjoyable, early rock and roll. High 3
How is this on the list but doesn't even have the song All I Have To Do Is Dream
A bit simple, but you can hear the proto-rock. I found most of the songs to be a bit bland for my taste, and while the harmonies are well executed, they started to grate after just a few tunes. I dig the tick-tack shuffle vibes, but it's just one step shy of being something I'd listen to regularly.
Standing below half an hour, this warm and inviting pop spectacle ends before it can get too repetitive. It’s extremely clear to see the influence that the Everly Brothers had on the insane success of acts like the Beach Boys and the Beatles. It’s just like the cover says, these songs are great for listening and/or dancing to. I didn’t personally engage in the latter. As for the album as a standalone piece of music, you can’t expect it to be much more than what it literally says on the tin, a nice collection of early 60s pop. And, as with so many other cases, you wouldn’t want it to be much more.
Not gonna lie, this was a fun record. It honestly sounds more modern than 1960… Gives off a sunshine rock, surf rock vibe and a touch of Folk. Better than expected. Favorites: Made to Love, Always It’s You, Love Hurts
The Everly Brothers hit me on a nostalgic level. I listened to a lot of stuff as a kid. Cathy's Clown was a bit of an anthem in our household as m mom's name is Cathy, so my dad was often referred to as, "Cathy's Clown." They straddled the fine line between rockabilly and country, and their harmonies are incredible.
50s pop. Nothing exciting.
72% Best: Baby What You Want Me to Do; Lucille Must-Hear? No. Run of the mill 50s/60s music.
Date went okay, probably won’t go on a second one though.
RnR, 1960 -> 2-3
• 3/5 • sappy pop, but influential • surprising that the best tracks are on side B
Gets repetitive but really pleasant tunes.
Not the kinda music I generally find myself listening to. Very pleasant and unchallenging … but nice!
Good. Bit samey but nice enough.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. Nice harmonies.
I like this kind of thing in short bursts maybe but man a full album of this is way too corny.
Definitely dated but not in a bad way. Safe, clean-cut white boy rock/pop that would make your visit to the malt shop a more pleasant experience. This album wouldn't get the parents wound up and it would make them think that maybe there was something to this "rock and roll" music. Flawless harmonies!
We get it, you like girls. Seriously though this is all classic young handsome 60’s youth. They blend voices nicely, but nothing here is particularly new. Maybe I’m missing something but it didn’t intrigue me enough to go find out what. I suppose if you really like this style then this certainly won’t turn you off from it. Favorite - So How Come
This music should sound ancient. Sometimes simplicity is a key. I almost could give it a 4 but frankly within boys singing about love genre you need something outstanding to win me over.
A Date with the Everly Brothers is pleasant, efficient, and undeniably well made, but it rarely reaches beyond that. The harmonies are as smooth and locked in as their reputation promises, and there is a relaxed charm running through the record, yet it often feels more like a collection of nicely delivered songs than a fully shaped album experience. It drifts along comfortably, never pushing too hard in any direction. The strength here is consistency, but that is also its limitation. Tempos stay safe, arrangements are clean and predictable, and emotional range remains fairly narrow. Songs pass by agreeably without demanding much attention, and while nothing is actively weak, very little truly stands out either. The album works best in the moment, less so in memory, with tracks blending together into a warm but indistinct whole. Ultimately, A Date with the Everly Brothers feels like a snapshot rather than a statement. It captures the duo doing what they do best, singing beautifully and sounding effortless, but it does not aim for depth or evolution. That is not a flaw so much as a ceiling.
This is all thanks to BBC’s Arena. Lovely doc from the 80s about their comeback, which I watched a couple of years ago. Before that had never paid any attention at all to them.
Clearly a very important influence on my favourite band ever, but it is still nascent rock and roll, and quite twee, but there are a couple of hints and then you get a worldie to close the album, worth a star on its own
A lovely, joyful album. The harmonies are fantastic, of course. You can hear how they influenced so many others, not least Messrs Lennon and McCartney. The version of Lucille - compared to Little Richard's - shows where this sits on the scales of Rock'n'Roll. Beautiful rather than ballsy.
A little twee but some great guitar solos. The harmonies are spot on, without a vocoder to be heard. Cathy's Clown is a five star song alone. All albums should be 27 minutes long. Or short.
I dont know, too oldie for me. 3/5
Nice harmonies and guitar sounds in places. Short pop songs. This was ok, probably won’t listen again.
18/12/24 They have good voices, but it was a bit slow.
An album of stuff that's a little bit better than the Beatles' worst stuff. Would recommend if you like early rocknroll or dowop music but other than that, give it a miss
The spirit of Take That, A-ha and One Direction, if not their music, already existed during the late fifties / early sixties, as this album proves. Of course, boys bands from that time period have some sort of timeless cinematic charm. But they're boys bands nonetheless. You still have stellar work on the vocal harmonies, of course. Oh and you have the original version of "Love Hurts", then made even more famous by Roy Orbison, Gram Parsons, Nazareth or Traffic's Jim Capaldi. Enough to grant the two playboys three stars, I guess. But not enough to include them in my own list. Let's just be serious for one second. Si vous voulez bien me passez l'anglicisme ici... 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 5. 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 441 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 260 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 320 (including this one)
A nice collection of songs, the later half better than the first half.
It was ok for 1960 rock and roll. But I feel like Ray Orbison, Elvis Presley, Chubby Checker or Sam Cooke have held up better over the years.
I thought Houmous and Chutney were the only group brave enough to finish an album with the hit single? Huge amount of respect to Beverley & Neverley for that! 2.5
Music from a simpler time. Haha. Nothing special here. 2.5 rounding up for only being 27ish mins.
Rating:B
Very old-timey music, pretty good for something that my grandma would have lost her panties for.
Dated
Some classics but largely forgettable
I think my only knowledge of The Everly Brothers is Unchained Melody. And now I’m doubting myself and thinking that was the Righteous Brothers. Anyway, this album made for a pleasant listen. Made To Love set up the album well, with it being a bit of a soppy pop rock album through and through. I can imagine being a teen in the 60s and obsessing over this. With today’s ears, it still makes for a fun half hour.
I love Cathy's Clown. I remember it from those infomercials for oldies compilation CDs, and I always thought the way they harmonize on that song was so pleasing to the ear. No other songs from this album grabbed my attention the same way, but it was a fun little time machine of a listen.
Fun but very old school
The second side is killer! Sure, some outdated lyrics, but these feel like little vignettes of my parents' youth and I'm kinda into it. Feeling nostalgic for something I never lived and, honestly, something that never was.
Fun
Nice enough isn’t it. I’d rather not go on a date with two brothers simultaneously though. Weird.
Proto-Beatles
Pleasant enough, certainly not for me, but Holy Christ do you get more of an appreciation of The Beatles, Stones, Byrds etc. managed to do in a few short years.
Didn't know much about them before. Some songs were kind of cheesy but didn't mind some others. Can definitely see how they influenced the Beatles and other artists.
I really enjoy their harmonies, but only need to listen to them once in a while. I had never heard them do Love Hurts…loved it!
Solid listen.

Always a good listen
Nice, will listen again.
Got excited when I saw the title initially; then early today asked the car’s voice command to pop it on when I was running about. Imagine my shock when rather than a blistering electric guitar opening and a photo featuring a large number of Afro hairstyles on the car’s display I was instead treated to a photo of two white guys at a phone box and 50s/60s crooning. That’s the last time il get the Isley Brothers and the Everly Brothers mixed up (I guess).
Ah, classic Frat boy music from the 50’s/60’s. My dad loved these guys! Makes me ponder on what he was supposedly like in college; sitting around with his frat brothers wasting the day, playing cards and chain smoking Lucky Strikes, bemoaning about not getting laid (similar to gamer bros today). Then he met my mom, quickly flunked out, and the rest is history. The music is dated but fun. The cigs eventually took my pop, but this album brought him back for a while.
Didn't really strike a chord with me
As classic as you can get. These songs are so a part of everything that came after it, and just stand up over time. Short and sweet and succinct.
Clásico necesario
This was actually not too bad. The Everly Brothers are iconic to this day. Those harmonies?!!? You already know I appreciated them. Anyway, pretty average album if I’m honest with you
If we were rating the Everlys on influence, it'd be a 5. Undeniably shifted the entire course of pop and rock music with their output between like, 58 and 61. But listening to it now, it's just nice, quaint stuff. Fuller in sound than you would expect, though.
The Everly Brothers are obviously very dated. The lyrics are sexism dressed up as teenage heartthrob romanticism. Although I don't care for the music much myself, I can clearly see the importance in music history. This is a huge influence on loads of artists, including the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys. They'd all go on to do things much better but the Everly Brothers helped shape the direction of rock n roll to come, incorporating elements of country and R&B. It feels intrinsically wrong to think of these guys as playing a crucial role in the development of all popular music to come but credit where credit is due. They did inspire a lot.
2.5☆/5 09.29.2024
Nice record, even if I only knew of one song (Love Hurts).
Excellent harmonization and really the type of thing you’re ok with hearing at a roller skate delivery drive in.
OG sad boys, lyrics are kinda wild but the music isn't bad. Felt like I was in a Breaking Bad montage
Exquisite pop music, clean, functional, easily digestible and almost disposable. Except the really good stuff lingers.
I liked this one, the close harmonies sound great. It's fun to imagine that this type of thing is the 50's/60's equivalent of the boy bands of the 90's-onward. Key tracks: Made to Love That's Just Too Much Love Hurts
Like a small can of diet coke, not my first choice but short and sweet
Perfectly adequate with some lovely melodies and a few unexpected funks.
Sehr chilliges Album, aber gleichzeitig auch repititiv
süß
ganz gemütlich 1-2 bekanntes dabei
Altbacken aber groovig.
the truest example of folksy americana rock harmonies. 3/5
Everly Brothers made so much good music, given the time period they operated in. They were innovative, and had a great influence on future music. So why did 1001 choose this album???
Très classique mais sympathique.
All a bit saccharin. And is that what we found attractive in those days?
Late fifties (1960) rock in the style of Buddy, Roy, and others.
Man, what an innocent time.
Not a bad album overall but at the same time there isn't very much that's special about it.
Good enough old timey tunes
I guess I can see the influence it had on later bands, but can't say that I really enjoyed listening to this. Not that it was bad, the sounds were pleasant, but it wasn't super interesting to me. Just a bit too simple. 2 seems too harsh for this so 3 I suppose.
Beautiful harmonies, some familiar tunes, not a bad way to zone out at work for a bit.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
While I generally enjoy early rock & roll, this album was a bit of a snooze fest for me. Really have else nothing to say about this album, it's not a jam mate, it's just total marmalade. Lucille was a good song, but other than that, this record feels very plain and unimaginative, the lyrics were uninspired and all about the same thing. This is just Temu Beach Boys. Note, it's definitely still listenable, and I didn't dislike any of the songs, it just wasn't that interesting to me. I'm sure if you played this at the local RSL on a Friday you'd have the oldies frothing at the mouth though.
A bit disappointing honestly — sounds like a knockoff of the early Byrds. I think The Everly Brothers' objective was to make every single track as monotonous as possible. "Love Hurts" was nice, of course, although I prefer Nazareth's cover. A lot more heartbreaking.
was okay
I imagine this was what every boomer kid came into after school. Not really my thing
Un filo troppo smielato
You can hear them influencing the Beatles! But it’s not as modern sounding as them so it’s only 3 stars. Still a good early pop/rock record.
They’ve definitely got the harmony thing down. That sibling blend is tough to beat, and it’s on full display here. “Love Hurts” still holds up, and considering how many artists have taken a swing at it over the years, that says a lot. “Cathy’s Clown” is another highlight—catchy and classic. The rest of the album kind of blurs together, though. It’s pleasant, easy to listen to, but nothing really grabs you beyond the hits. Feels more like a time capsule than something I’d put on regularly. Still, you gotta respect what they brought to the table.
60’s pop
Meh. Not bad. Just not really my thing.
I love 'So How Come (No One Loves Me'. That's all I have to say about that. This is definitely a product of its time, but that doesn't mean I don't like it.
3-
A Date With The Everly Brothers considering it as as release before the invention of modern music (1963). A lot of good songs, it’s from a different era. 6.1/10
Like these classic jams, these brothers be crazy. Good singers, though songs are fairly basic. Maybe like a 3.5-ish?
Per my ten year old "It is good. Not like good for today, but good for old music". 3/5
As someone who listened to a lot of older music, I was surprised at how many of these songs were new to me. Very interesting hearing the original version of Love Hurts though.
rohyp 'n' roll
Onde tudo era mato
A very simple, short, and sweet album. Really enjoy the fusion of pop, country, and rock-n-roll. A little same-y. Best song: So How Come
Fine but i won't listen to it again.
Began quite likable musically, but ended in late 50s schmalz. It's probably better not to mention (as in: pay attention to) the lyrics. 2.5/5
A nice selection of calm songs about love. Liked songs: Baby What You Want Me To Do Sigh, Cry, Almost Die Love Hurts A Change of Heart Cathy's Clown
Good for its time I guess?
Ok
Nice early rock
Dig the jaunty tunes. Don’t love the schmaltz. But boy can you see where so much of the sixties came from. “Love Hurts” exhibit A of that clean-clean hollow body electric sound and, man, who knew Nazareth didn’t write it?!?
Such strong vocals. Great thru the sixties
It's cute, but everything is sung with about the same intonation. I think I'd like it more with a bit more variety on that front.
I’m hoping there is another Everly Brothers album on the list that is much better.
Like a tall glass of egg whites, but I like the surf undertones.
the soft soothing sounds of the everly brothers and their sweet, sweet harmonies.
50s pop-rock
I liked the album length. Seems like a slightly worse version of the Buddy Holly Crickets album. Some of the lyrics were very straightforward, not much subtlety.
Sorta charming in a honky-tonk kind of way, but the first song was pretty cringe and I got tired of every song being about love 5/10
6/10 - It was fine. I liked how short it was tbh. The songs kind of sounded all the same. This was beneficial since they were all nice to listen to but nothing revolutionary or fantastic.
Another just kinda boring but not bad 60s pop album. They all kinda sound the same to me
smooth sound
Was ok, easy listening
Very good music in its day. Great harmonizing. Many good songs.
Helped by the novelty of its era and sound. The songs themselves, are pretty by the numbers.
3*
Good, enjoyable
A nice album, I liked Made to Love the best.
Decent! Not really my thing, but it's good stuff
Surprised by this. Assumed they’d get a 5
Its short, its sweet but a little sleepy and clean-cut for modern ears. There's a lot of album cuts here to back up two to three classics. A three out of respect to the quality rather than personal taste.
Not usually my cup of tea but man, those voices!! Definitely an influence on everyone from The Beatles to Simon and Garfunkel. Had no idea they played the first version of “Love Hurts.” And, “Cathy’s Clown” has been stuck in my head all day.
Short and sweet, nice harmonies.
I like some of their more popular songs (two of which are on here), but as an album, it’s not the best. At worst, the songs are just okay, but it’s not really cohesive, so I’ll give it a 3.
Very fast album. Over before I knew it
This style of music really went out of fashion way too fast. I know it's ephemeral, but there's something about it that makes me so giddy and teleports me back to being a teenage girl talking with my friends on the kitchen phone about nothingness while my Mom pretends not to listen. And I was doing that almost exactly 50 years after this came out! Also, I really, really like this style of production. Everything sounds crisp. Those drums? Ugh, my god, so good! Also that guitar sound. And those harmonies are tight as hell. I do think A Date with... is still a bit too ephemeral, and doesn’t stick with me as much as I would like/as much as other teen pop from this era. Still, this is leagues above the copycat shit The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and all the British Invasion boy bands were doing only three or four years after this, so for that alone it deserves praise.
Cathy's Clown is a bop!
Golden oldies
A few songs on here that I didn't realize were covered. Great listen. Perfect for cooking super.
their exquisite harmonies can make the most mediocre material a pleasure
Good
Short and sweet. Gives some good insight to pop music before most of the list takes place and just get some nostalgic bops
It’s okay. Feels like Happy Days interstitial music, and probably is. Love Hurts started here, and it’s a good version. Cathy’s Clown is better than I remember. If I want an immersive pre-Beatles moment, I guess I’d listen to this and Holly.
Pretty good
This so-called date totally took place at a sock hop.
You’ve heard the Everly Brothers yeah? It’s half an hour of that. Weirdo incels making music for when you need your TV to shout “this scene is set in the early 1960s” Well put together though so points for that.
they set out to make a simple, catchy record and that’s exactly what they did. also cathy’s clown lowkey slaps
I feel like the Everly brothers have better songs than the ones on this album
I have always made the unfortunate (and obviously grossly) mistaken mashup in my mind with the Everly and Smothers Brothers, so I wasn't sure what to expect with this album. Not really my style or sensibility (although I've always enjoyed the various covers for "Love Hurts"), but a fine album for a sound that's not only *not* like the Smothers Brothers, but also a different era. Given that the Wikipedia entry for this album notes that "It's Everly Time" is a superior album, I wonder why we got this instead? (Presumably more Everly Brothers in our future, I guess)
Some songs recognized the world over along with strong vocal harmonies. A solid benchmark for the genre.
Rigtig 60’er poprock energi - simpelt og ligefrem
It was good, but not amazing.
Pretty good if not unmemorable. Pair of brothers make a 50's rock & roll record. "Love Hurts" is interesting given this is the original and how many times it went on to get covered in years following.
A pleasant listen. Short, catchy music definitely of its era.
Why listen to this when Buddy Holly exists?
Classic old rock with a few great songs.
Sure these fellas slayed 70 years ago, but not for me
An innocent, easy-listening record. Impeccable harmonies. Love Hurts was my pick of the bunch.
Pitää olla skaala.. parasta mitä odotan on viisi tähteä.. aina mahdollista.. TÄMÄ NYT VAAN SATTU 3 OLEMAAN...
David Lynch-ass album!
Decent voice melodies!
definitely a 60's album
It’s like a time capsule
This album is just middling. The music is dated, especially the lyrics, but generally pleasant. No big hits or anything though
It’s a head nodding, toe tapping good time but it just made me want to listen to Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Far from unpleasant but all a bit white washed, diluted and milquetoast compared to real Rock and Roll.
God so much of rock was just ripped right out of a blues cradle. Always Its You is a good song.
It's cute. For 1960 you can see the influence it might have on a Beach Boys or Beatles, and even if you aren't into it there's only 28 minutes of it to sit through. I enjoyed it though, doubt i'll go back to it anytime soon, but learning a bit of musical history is what this list is all about really.
An Everly Brothers album where I somehow don't know a single one of the songs? Ok then. Well ok I know Love Hurts, but as we all know that was first recorded 15 years later by Nazareth. And as others have noted, the cover of Lucille is atrocious. Needs to include All I have to do is Dream and Wake up Little Susie to make me care. Ah. Cathy's Clown. Well I do know this one and it's brilliant, so that earns a whole extra star.
Very representative of its time.
A hard one to rate. The album isn't very good to listen to now, but I can see how back in the day it was significant. When I rate albums here, I usually rate them based on how likely I am to "want" to listen to it again at sometime in the future and how likely I am to include tracks on playlists. Well, this one, while good, doesn't get much from me on either aspect. I probably will never choose to listen to it again and maybe one or two songs could go on a 'old nostalgic' playlist... How good is it, 4/5 How likely will I listen to it again: 2/5 Overall: 3.5/5
Quite dated stereotypes and very white.
Dated now and yes, the lyrics would be problematic if released today but in its time a decent album. A little earlier than my favourite period but it has some killer 2 part harmonies that set the trend for the genre for bigger bands that followed. Solid contribution to the canon.
Man that Cathy’s Clown chorus is a banger. Verse-chorus-verse? Fuck that — Chorus-bridge-chorus. Give ‘em what they want.
White washed blues with some lovely affectation.
Pretty good!
A pleasant listen. Not exciting or interesting, but a good reminder of the early era of rock and roll.
Pleasant and well-crafted.
Music to turn your brain off to, and just listen to the lovely, yet strangely haunting, sound of their voices. The songwriting on this album is nothing special in my opinion, and all the songs fade out, which is a pet peeve of mine, but the sound of the music is really nice. And I mean, it's the Everly Brothers, they're legends.
Like if the Beach Boys were constantly down bad.
For how dated this is, The Everly Brothers come through with some pretty impressive instrumentals. Otherwise it feels pretty repetitive. 2.5 rounding up.
When's they're good, it's SO good. When they are overly sappy, they are still ok.
Pretty corny tunes, maybe a bit sexist too, but the harmonies are nice.
Obviously really dated, but the vocal harmonies are nice and the song selection varied enough. An absolute travesty that this first recording of 'Love Hurts' wasn't even released as a single. By far the best 2 minutes and 23 seconds of the album.
Just enough variations to keep you guessing as to never be quite sure where The Everly Brothers are turning next. The lyrics are dated but surprisingly alright considering the release year. It’s under half an hour long. And it’s just enjoyable.
