Reviews (page 4 of 7)

6/10 Hard riffing, but there are songs here too. Not as bad as o feared it would be

It’s fine as far as metal goes. Better than some, worse than some

Favorite Track: Peace Sells

Meh. It was a hit when it came out, but it isn't Metallica.

"Good Mourning/Black Friday" was a standout for having a memorable, slighlty softer intro. But it wasn't anything crazy, I feel like so many metal songs from this time had the slow, plucky guitar melody intro. Good, but nothing mind-blowing. "I Ain't Superstitious" was pretty fun too, didn't take itself seriously, a little honkeytonk rock influence, an insane guitar solo. Maybe a slightly better second half than first half, but nothing overtly insane. 3/5 love the bone guy mascot

This is one of those ones where I recognise they are good at what they do but what they do does not do it for me. Conjures up images of middle aged men in denim jackets with patches head banging and clutching their snakebite and black in a dingy venue with sticky floor. 2.5

This was perfectly fine but not exactly inspiring. Sad that two members left with drug issues just after the release.

Metallica sells….who’s buying Megadeth?

Have always meant to dive a little deeper into their stuff, in general a fan of melodic 80s thrash. This was pretty fun at the gym. Really liked the title track, but mostly had hoped for a few more hooks.

I love megadeth but this is probably their most overrated project, some unmemorable stuff here though still some bangers for sure

This album reminded me a lot of country music. I know, but go with me on this one. There are some really good musicians here that are very limited by the style that they choose to play in. Because they play shred metal or “shredal”, which I’m copywriting as a new genre name, it all has to be loud and hard and fast. The lyrics become secondary and almost pointless, which is certainly the case here. In the same way, country music must follow a formula of constant repetition with simplistic melodies and lyrical structures. So, although they sound very different, both styles discourage individual expression, and make it harder for unique voices to emerge. It’s why so much shredal sounds the same to me. It’s why so much country sounds the same to me. It’s why so much contemporary pop sounds the same to me. The style outweighs the speaker. I admit, I’m uninitiated to thrash, death and other intricate genres of heavy metal. Maybe if they sounded a little different from each other or offered more nuance, I’d find interest in one of them and something would catch my ear. Unfortunately, this just sounds like all the rest of them to me. I do wonder which mascot between this dude and the iron maiden guy would win in a fight though…

Megadeth! Awesome band name, good album. Peace Sells (the song) is a classic banger, couple other really good songs on here but most of the album is Dave Mustaine being Dave Mustaine, he can shred, he's got that gnarly voice, and he's given us more than a few great riffs over the years but he's not my favorite. I wish this was a different Megadeath album, but Peace Sells was my introduction to Megadeath, it holds a bit of nostalgia with me so always happy to give it a listen. Objectively this is a 3, even with nostalgia I can't go 4. Maybe we'll get a second, better, Megadeath album that will get my 4.

What happens when you can shred like crazy but can’t really write a good song.

My rating 3.0

I ❤️ Satan!

Better than expected

Not into heavy metal but not bad

Ha. Look. Thrash metal isn't my thing, but I can appreciate what is going on here.

3.2 The thrash and shred are certainly all time but I just dont think the songwriting is as good at Metallica and Slayer if we are comparing apples to apples. Although I will say I would put Megadeth's top songs up against any other trash/metals bands top songs.

Metal isn't really my thing anymore and Mustaine's voice annoys me a bit, but this is a pretty good album for the genre. A classic.

Good solos

Titelnummeret er og bliver en banger. God energi, gode musikere, ikke for lang men meget det samme

Kæft de spiller hurtigt på giddar, 3 stjerner

Great guitars, awful voice.. this is the tiniest of 3's, but it's early thrash, so it has to be here...

A lot of testosterone produces thr opposite of complex music. Simple harmonies in 4/4 time and nothing much melodic, but the hook is that it's played fast and loud. They can play, but they fall back on a regular bunch of tricks- the chugging bass, the guitar triplets and so on. They talk about "socially aware lyrics", but then put the vocals so far back in the mix and the singer is so unclear that you wouldn't know. I can see the appeal, but it's not really deep. And it's amusing that this gets labelled "extreme metal" when real extreme music like Throbbing Gristle or John Zorn languishes at the bottom of the rankings.

Silly and not my jam lyrically, but surprisingly listenable and occasionally impressive guitar work

Definitely some nuggets in there and live this would be insane. Solid.

Powerful, fast paced metal, better for me in a live setting

I guess this is just me realizing what thrash metal's whole deal is, but Dave Mustaine and his lyrics really sound a lot like if you dropped a hardcore punk singer into a metal band!

Always start fired up listening to shit like this but it always gets a little same-y and boring, it's fine

Ágætis riff þarna inn á milli, en heilinn minn ræður ekki við svona mikið.

Alright really. Not as bad as we thought.

Len Houmous once spent almost half of one of Houmous & Chutneys worlds tour budgets trying to start a business selling Peace. Ends up it costs more to make than you can sell it for! 2.5 3/12 Peace Sells

This is fun metal. Killer guitar, great riffs. The vocals and lyrics are not as strong as the work on the instruments.

Solid thrash bit angsty at time

As my second Megadeth album, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? is a great album title and again has me reflecting on how baller the guitar playing is! Megadeth loves a theme, and they do well at it. The album flows, too. But I just can't get past that Megadeth is just doing what Metallica or Judas Priest already did. And I can't stop thinking about how "I Ain't Superstitious" sounds like Mötley Crüe covered that song. Regardless, still worthy of a 3.

Megadeth has a knack for naming and marketing their albums, that's for sure; they're always coming in clutch with the skull and death motifs. It's a fitting visual, and one that Megadeth made synonymous with their name. They were definitely among the pioneers of this type of iconography in mainstream music. As far as the music goes, as a fan of early metal, what's not to like? It's catchy, and the guitar work here is fire. Not my favorite metal entry on this project, but still a solid 3 for me.

This album's so well done that I like it despite not caring much for the genre as a whole. The guitar work is just incredible. Also I really love the cover art.

I made some progress with this

Too much metal. Longggg album

Divertissant, mais redondant.

There’s nothing wrong with it but they do get better a few albums later

I liked this, but I did feel like each track sounded the same.

I'm not buying

Peace Sells...But Who's Buying - Megadeth Megadeth is a lot like Donald Trump in that they defy parody. No SNL or Tenacious D parody would ever been as absurd and hilarious as the original. This is the definitely the funniest album I've had so far. If they took themselves less seriously it probably won't work. Full commitment is admirable and hilarious. Plus 1-star for the comedy and commitment of it all. ⭐⭐⭐

I can see this album being pretty divisive - people who like metal and people who don't. And among those who do, the 'why not just listen to Metallica?' camp. There's some merit to that question. As others have said, you don't go into this thinking you'll hear anything profound but its a great thrash metal record and is a lot of fun. I don't think I'll run out to buy a bunch of Megadeth records but I enjoyed this one today. 3.5/5 but gonna round down because it's not quite up to a 4 for me.

A little repetitive.

𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴… 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘞𝘩𝘰’𝘴 𝘉𝘶𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨? delivers a very pure form of 80s thrash metal: fast riffs, aggressive vocals, restless drumming and constant technical intensity. It’s clearly well-executed, but it also feels very typical of the genre. For listeners who aren’t deeply into metal, the songs can blend together, and the album’s trademarks may feel more conventional than exciting. There are standout moments — especially the title track — but they don’t necessarily open the music up beyond its stylistic boundaries. The social and political themes add character, yet they don’t fully change the experience if the core sound isn’t already appealing. A strong example of classic thrash, but not much more than that unless you’re already a fan of the style.

I quite liked it. Not sure I would listen again but I had fun listening - nice and energetic without being too much. Fav song: Peace Sells Least fav: Devils Island

When I saw the name and album cover I assumed I would hate the album but I ended up having quite a good time. Still not super my thing, bit too loud and lyrically uninspiring. I also had a great time reading Dave Mustaine's wikipedia page- what a strange man, gotta be careful if you sing along to the Conjuring or you might accidentally put a hex on someone! Favourite song: Peace Sells Least: Good Morning/Black Friday

Fun, never would have listened to it otherwise

Pretty decent! Very energetic. Hectic in places which made me kind of fall off the train a little but largely enjoyed it.

It was decent but it didn’t blow me away.

This errs on the "too heavy" side of heavy metal for me. Once again I'm writing the same review for this genre: the instrumental backing is awesome (bonus point for the many and varied 🔥 riffs here)... but the vocals and lyrics make me wanna pull my headphones out of my ears. And throw them in the river.

First listen. 3 I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Fun riffs, fast music. Nothing is super catchy or memorable to me, but it was a good listen.

Took me a little bit to acclimate. I appreciate the talent on display but I am just not a thrash metal person.

Good album if you like thrash metal.

Pek benlik değil ama beğendiğim 2 3 parça var.

Fun old school metal, I see the influence this had on later metal. The cheese factor is pretty high, but it’s part of the charm

Awesome playing and fun stuff. They do a lot and cover a lot of ground without changing music sonically.

Once again, every Megadeth album is ruined by awful vocals. This one is no exception. What could have been a solid thrash album I couldn’t get into. Black Friday was the standout.

I love Peace Sells. The rest of this is thrashadelic cornball riffage

Okay, Megadeth, here is your three. For what it is, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying is fine, I guess. But the faster the metal gets, the less I am inclined to want to listen to it.

Turns out I am not a huge Megadeth fan. Can't take away the fact those cats can play (fast and hard)! It's like UM playing Wizard Burial Ground over and over. Not bad music, just not my cup of tea... or coffee. I'd give it 2.5 if I could, but as I always have been doing, I round up on this site.

Meh-gadeth. Not my favorite flavor of metal. Highlight: "Peace Sells."

Lyrics are goofy but you cannot argue with that guitar 🤘

Peas sell.

i'm selling short

3.5 - some good ol thrash metal

typically not a huge fan of thrash metal but excited to hear it Wake Up Dead: this is silly to the point of camp. such a melodramatic song about cheating on your own wife The Conjuring: I always really enjoy things that are unapologetically 100% what they are, if that makes sense. this sounds like a song someone would write to make fun of this type of metal, that's charming to me Peace Sells: WHADDAYAMEAN. this would go crazy if I was 15 forty years ago Devils Island: I love that the tracks keep switching between relatively straightforward lyrics and like, Edgar Allen Poe short stories Good Mourning/Black Friday: the lyrics are funny, like a kid who plays too many violent video games Bad Omen: guitar work on this one is really cool and noodly I Ain't Superstitious: it's fine My Last Words: dig the guitars in the intro. it's neat this album is pretty much exactly what I expected. still not sold on thrash metal (it's just too goofy-sounding for me), but it was fun to listen to __ SCORE: 5.5/10 ADDED TO PLAYLIST: --

Not my bag but not bad.

Well if it sells then isn't someone buying

18/10/2025 As much as I like this music, it was an okay album, very samey. Spotify listeners: 5.3 million

I've been meaning to listen to Megadeth for a long time, mostly because of cultural relevance for 1980s metal. I had no expectations other than assuming it'll fall somewhere between Metallica and Iron Maiden. I think this album proves what everyone already knew what was possible, that too much guitar riffing can be a thing. I can imagine that the average recording session deviated from what was planned due to the inability of Mustaine and Poland to control their desire to riff. The album does have some highlights - Wake Up Dead and Peace Sells - but generally falls pretty neatly into the arbitrary "generic 80s metal" category that exists in my mind.

Should not be here honestly, since Rust in Peace is all you need.

Better than expected

High energy, consistent vibe. I'm not super into the shouty lyrical style and obsession with speed trash metal has, but I liked the guitar parts on the final song a lot

Standard-issue thrash metal. 3/5

First time listening to this artist. I liked it, didn't love it. But if you're in the mood for metal I think this album works.

I really didn’t expect to like this. I always sort of thought Megadeath was a screamo heavy metal band. They surprised me with what felt like the elevation of the genre that came before it. It felt heavily influenced by bands like Aerosmith and AC/DC, but with talented instrumentals to back it up, it was honestly a great listen

Not my favorite of Megadeath but it gets the head banging and the heart pumpin

I surprisingly liked this quite a bit more than Rust In Peace, even though Dave Mustaine’s voice still grates on me. But this album had more of a punk edge than precious Megadeth albums I’ve heard. I’m not a huge fan of metal in general, but it’s much more tolerable to me when it’s more punk than thrash. There were some good melodies here too. Still didn’t love the album, but I totally understand why it’s on this list.

Unreal guitar but Mustaves voice annoys me. Peace Sells rips though.

Found this to be ok - not a genre I typically would listen to

I have this album. I enjoy listening to it. It's got a couple highlights but nothing inspires me to rank it higher than average.

Pretty good, but not for me

https://i.imgflip.com/86ht6a.jpg Just 100%'d Postal 2, listened to this album, and finished my manifesto. It's time...

Better than some

It's a metal album for sure... yeah. Nothing more to note

This got me in the right mood. All jacked up on caffeine. I thought they were much more metal but I enjoyed the melodies and overall sound. Would listen to again!

Not exactly my cup of tea, but I definitely get the technical precision of it. Solid!

Album covers with zombies and "heavy" fonts (see also: Iron Maiden etc.) always look pubertal and a bit off-putting to me. However, musically, this is fine, but not so fine that I'll pick this over Metallica or Slayer. Good musicianship though, not sure about the vocals, some nice grooves. Just doesn't stand out for me. Glad I discovered it though. Yet another 3.

cool album, stays interesting, idk what else to write

Not my favourite genre but the album was ok

Megadeath to the soul and ears! Battle Music For The Future

Not my favourite Megadeth but some of those bass lines slapped!

Riffs and solos...but no songs? Ok that's a bit harsh, but there's some truth in it. The playing on this is great, but the songs can be structured in odd ways. The opener is a good example: short verse into a riff that repeats for way too long into a solo, then a riff switch at the end that makes it sound like another song has started. The title track is a good example of when a song flows well and you can sit back and head bang to it. Now, thrash isn't exactly a genre known for songwriting and the messiness is kind of the point, but this is also lacking in memorable riffs and the vocals and lyrics are bad. So I think better structured songs would make up for those deficits. As it is, the music is heavy and fast but hard to get into.

While I’m not a fan of 80s heavy metal, I completely understand why people love it. I think this will be a good lifting playlist but besides that and maybe drinking with friends, I don’t see myself listening to this again.

Makes me feel like choke slamming my sister. a very high 3 stars but not quite a 4

Heard of, never listened to. Better than expected. Fairly clear lyrics while still being pretty metal

This was a little worse than the other megadeth album. Not sure how I came to this conclusion since it sounds exactly the same

Nice guitarwork. I especially liked My Last Words.

Not a bad showing by megadeath

Some killer riffs but felt shockingly hair metal at points. 2.5/5

Good metal

I've never gotten too into Megadeth. The album is perfectly cromulent thrash, but not super memorable in my opinion. Wake Up Dead and Peace Sells are classics.

The Flanderized version of spooky heavy metal. Impossible to take seriously, but a pretty good time to listen to.

Not my usual style of music. I know I listened to some of these songs while playing guitar hero. Some songs felt very samey. The more yelling style of singing limited the vocal range and the bass was pretty similar across most songs. The guitar solos were definitely the highlights of all the songs

It's not my genre, but I do appreciate the skilled musicianship.

jag tycker ändå att megadeth har nåt. rust in peace var bättre men det här är ändå lite fett.

High energy, fast paced, head bangin’ thrash metal. Not at all my style, but not a bad album. Just political enough with the song Peace Sells (best track) and Vic on the album cover in front of the dystopian UN Building to get the album onto the 1001 Must Hear List. The Mr Burns mixes are really tamed down, but much more listenable. (3.1*s) War sells and the US government is buying. Peace doesn’t sell. No one’s buying. Question should be: Has anyone figured out how to make money selling peace?

Didn't mind this despite not really considering thrash metal a genre I'm fond of. There is some definite skill on display as all the tracks feature some very tight intricacy between the players. I'm no prude, but it's a little too hardcore with over the top lyrics for everyday listening for me. I can definitely see how someone would be into this. I recognize that this can absolutely amp you up and appreciate that I've gotten some exposure to Megadeth as a result of this list even if I won't listen to them regularly moving forward. 2.53 stars

Habil metal. Bättre än mycket annan metal. Tycker dock inte nån låt sticker iväg. Men grundläggande är det bra tempo och najs, som metal/rock kan vara. Men inget fantastiskt. Peace sella var nog bäst

Inte hört denna tidigare men en habil skiva, där Peace sells och andra halvan var bäst. Skulle nog kanske växa med fler lyssningar, men just nu en stabil trea.

a really electric album with guitar solos that are invigoratingly thrashing! fav tracks are good mourning/black friday and bad omen!

Good sound but I feel like they have a better album in the bag.

Great title. I’m just not into the music so much.

very of its time. clever lyrics, good singing. didn't find it very interesting otherwise but i'm probably missing context

Classic metal

Decent thrash metal. High 3/5.

It’s an okay metal album. It exists in between thrash metal and more performative versions of the genre. It is a little less serious, which is nice. Kind of wish they leaned into that a little more. Overall not bad. 3/5 Might listen again

Listened to this while studying and made me think I was in some training montage. definetly a study album I felt like doing push ups but when i tried I realized i was not made for push-ups and immediately failed. gave me the confidence though, I can say that.

An okay album, not my favorite music style. I liked Devil's Island and Bad Omen the most.

Not the worst.

3.4/i'd probably love this if i was a teenager when this came out. nowadays, not my thing

Sounds like metallica obvs

I've never been sold on Megadeth, and listening to this, I casn see why Metallica leads the pack of the big four of trash in popularity and that they are the only one that really has a melodic approach to their vocals. I know some would say that's what makes Metallica thrash light, I'm just saying it's what makes them more approachable. My probrme with Mustane's vocals is that spoken cackle delivery he uses on the opening few tracks, I hate them. But he drop that after a few songs. And I do find the later half tolerable, but I but nothing aces over the Metallica at the time. I will note really liking "Devil's Island" and "Bad Omen" but really not much else. 6.25 ★★★

Not a huge fan of thrash metal, but thus album is okay. 3 stars

I actually liked this album more than I thought I would, but still not really up my alley and I don't anticipate ever listening to it again. 3 stars.

I went into this album a bit afraid. Now I’m both more and less scared of thrash metal. I loved the drive, the skill, the mood - but do I wish it was instrumental. The vocals sound like they tortured the guy to make those noises. Or like they recorded a random fan shouting along at a concert. Meanwhile, the instruments are killer. The energy and flow are perfect. Too bad the vocals are ruining it all.

I like that Dave Mustaine was able to see his own vision through outside of the evil band that betrayed him, but I kinda side with James and company on that whole dispute. Megadeath have never done it for me. I think there's some technical mastery to be found on this album, but the songs leave me wanting some kind of payoff that I don't think ever arrives.

I know this band. I have heard some tracks by them, I have not sat and listened to an album. So I am interested to see what this sounds like. This shit is so rockin! Pretty cool stuff.

Kinda fun tbh

un album metal. non lo riascolterò ma non l'ho odiato

I appreciate the instrumental prowess, but I'm in different to the type of music.

Awesome metal but I’m not into metal.

Although I'm not usually a big fan of metal, these guys know how to play.

I see its thrashiness, but it feels a bit soft imo, they could do more extreme things.

Agree with the sentiment that this isn't as good as the previous Megadeth album. It's still good overall though. Peace Sells and Bad Omen were the standout tracks for me, but ultimately this runs on longer than I'd like it to. Mid-to-High 3 is my score.

Not sure if I have actually listened to this whole album. Not my favorite work by Megadeth and wayyyyyy inferior to Rust in Peace. Peace Sells the song is always awesome and makes me think of GTA Vice City everytime I hear it.

Cant get into these guys. Dont know why.

Not my cup of tea generally. This album is fine but I preferred. Countdown to Destruction.

There are a lot of fun riffs and they are all talented musicians. Metal music isn’t my jam though.

Sometimes you just want to put on some tunes, turn off your brain, crank up the volume and blow out your eardrums. I don't do this often and though you've lost a few more brain cells, you feel damn good, even better if no one complains. Of all the thrash-speed heavy metal bands out there, you can do a whole lot worse than Megadeth. Though they have "scary" and "satanic" imagery, it's harmless fun and hopefully they don't take themselves too seriously. The musicianship and playing is actually talented and skillful, as their talents are underrated behind the long hair and loud noise. Music that makes you stupider by the minute for some good clean dumb fun.

Decent album. Solid throughout, and even somewhat varied. Would listen again.

Some killer riffs here but ultimately outmatched by a fair amount of mediocre thrashing and not being the other big M metal band. Wake Up Dead is okay but it has way too much going on for a song under 4 minutes. Peace Sells is alright, but it ain't their best single by a long shot. The three tracks that immediately follow it however had me captivated. Fucking ragers. I Ain't Superstitious completely ruined it but the last track was fairly decent. Again, some great riffs, some excellent soloing, the pacing and overall speed of the album is right up my alley, just not quite enough there songwriting wise to make it a fully excellent metal album. Favourites - Devils Island, Good Mourning/Black Friday, Bad Omen

Only listened to half but actually gave some stank faces

Ganska bra men också långt ifrån deras bästa album, ett par bangers tho!

Jorå!

Megadeth is really really funny, Dave Mustaine looks like the cowardly lion, but you know what? This rocks. It’s good and it rocks. It’s stupid. But it’s good. And it rocks.

Music is awesome, vocals aren't my style. My favorite song was Good Mourning/Black Friday.

good, but won't listen to it often. 3

you know this is vastly more listenable to than Anthrax or Slayer, and even early Metallica - all of whom have featured on this list. Not my cup of tea but 3 stars.

It's OK.

Fun album, probably wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again though. Highlights: Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells

Nothing overly stood out but enjoyed Favourites: Peace Sells

This was a bit difficult to get through, it wasn’t bad, in fact I thought it was quite groovy, it was just so intense. I didn’t listen to disc 2, it was all too much Fav songs: Peace Sells, My Last words

Finally, a metal album that I didn’t totally hate. Idk if this project is breaking down or what but this great at some points. Overall, it was still a task to get through but, again, I didn’t hate it.

Can't believe the lead of Megadeath was also in Metallica. What a comeback.

If I gave it anything higher, it would be simply because it's Megadeath and not based on the album content alone. I like it, but it's not one I do or would listen to often.

drei plus

I like it more than I thought I would.

Første album der mitt første minne om coveret er 1001 album-boka. Litt skuffende, men ok pluss.

Solid thrash but I'm nae a big thrashman. 3.5 stars.

It’s said not to judge a book by its cover, but in this case this album does exactly what it says on the tin. From the parental advisor warning to the Iron Maiden style apocalyptic zombie thing, it’s clear that this is good old-fashioned thrash metal with pounding drums, galloping bass, growling vocals and lots of fast, twiddly guitar. It’s a brisk 36 minutes in length with songs about war, death and the occult, and not a lot else. It certainly kept me awake on a dull drive back from the office today. Thanks Megadeth!

Respect but not my style

Album 794 of 1089 Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying (1986) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Not a go-to genre for me but I do like the shredding guitars. This one was a pretty good listen. Might visit it again.

Thrash metal is not my thing, hell metal isn’t generally my thing though I do listen to a fair amount of 70s and early 80s metal. But I just think thrash gets tiring after a song or two, the only exception to this for me is Metallica. I do respect Megadeth as a band for their importance, and I can see myself getting into them a few years ago and them being one of the bands that got me into metal, but at this point I just don’t find them super interesting compared to even other thrash bands. I also am not a fan of Dave Mustaine’s vocals or his lyrics, however the playing here is fantastic even if it isn’t really my thing when it comes to metal. This album it was pretty decent taking all that into account. It’s a solid thrash album but not one I see myself really returning to.

Peace Sells is a classic, everything else is just okay.

Very stupid but also fun.

Classic metal

Some extremely cool chuggy guitar riffs and solos on this record, but the melodies and hooks are boring in my opinion. Megadeth definitely has better songs that aren’t on display here.

So much noodle. Too much? Maybe.

I don’t understand how this is up there with Iron Maiden and Metallica. Sure it’s good, but in this particular era of mid 80’s metal, you also had Iron Maiden’s Powerslave (1984) and Metallica’s Ride the Lightening (1984). My opinion is that there are better albums in this genre from this time and I really don’t get the hype

Amazing guitar

I’m not often into thrashing, but I’d definitely come knocking on this door when I’m next in the mood.

3.2 Slightly surprised at this inclusion, it's far from their best album, so I can only assume it's based on the year it came out, trying to rival Metallica's master of puppets. I've never really rated Megadeth that highly despite my affinity to metal. This is a pretty average album. Peace Sells is only great song. Last track is pretty good. The rest are just pretty forgettable to be honest. Dunno how Wake Up Dead is a live staple.

Definitely synergized with my morning coffee to power me through the morning. Maybe I lack a refined ear, but the problem with thrash metal is all the songs feel like the same speed and tone, so they start to blend together. I enjoy the style to an extent, but another that I probably won't return to.

not bad, just not really my thing

Good album

megadeth would be well served by mustaine shutting up

Favorite songs: Peace Sells, I Ain't Superstitious, Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring Least favorite songs: Devil's Island 3/5

Solid!

Thrash metal isn't really my genre, but there were still several tracks on this album that I enjoyed. Favorite Song: "My Last Words"

Going to be honest, their sound is super dated. Has not aged well. And they're just not as good as other bands of their time like Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden etc. I don't mind Metal on occasion, but Megadeth ain't it. Still it's not a bad album technically, and they're clearly very influential. Love the spine-melty Devils Island!

This was .... definitely Megadeath. The wikipedia was interesting.

shred it

Not a huge metal fan, but this was pretty good.

Honestly? Could’ve been worse. Maybe this list has just desensitized me but I find I’m not minding metal quite as much anymore. Light 3.

Lots of shredding and technically proficient playing on this, but its not my style. I wish there were more soul if this type of rock music.

Megadeth is one of the most straightforward bands there. The name, the album art choices, the sound. They know what they want to do and do it well. It's far from anything deep but it shreds and is heavy and is fun.

I liked this album's vibe. Feels a little repetitive at times. Solid musicianship. I hoped I would like the Blues track I Ain't Superstitious more than I did. I liked Good Mourning/ Black Friday the most.

Big Red specials on here. Don't mind it, but always been a fan of their album covers.

Not bad when it’s riffing out

почему в ревью здесь все пишут что это dumb музыка? в чем тупость? ваще не понял нихуя

I continue to be surprised by how much I enjoy Megadeth. But like their other entry a bit more than this one.

Trying to shed my preconceived notions of "Metal" to just enter and enjoy. They are shredding ALLLL over this album. It wound up rocking, and while I am not necessarily converted, I can appreciate much of what is happening on this LP.

Some really good riffs but a lot of the songs are pretty samey and difficult to differentiate

The early half of this album didn't do much for me, but the last 2 tracks saved it. 3/5 Highlights: I Ain't Superstitious My Last Words

Prior to this I had only heard Rust In Peace from them, which I really liked. This isn’t that, but it’s still solid. The Metallica comparisons are always going to be made when discussing Megadeth. I think the pure musicianship here is better. However, I think I prefer the melodies and overall songwriting on Master Of Puppets which came out the same year. Favorite songs were Peace Sells, Good Mourning / Black Friday, and My Last Words.

I was never really into Megadeth, and this album hasn't changed my mind. But at least now I have a better idea of what it is that's made it such an enduring sound.

This is kind of fun, I like the title track. But Mustaine's voice is awful. That's the main barrier for me. I think it's kind of interesting to contrast this with peak Metallica, which I love, because they're awfully similar. Hetfield also isn't an A-singer, but he is a bit better than Mustaine, and I like Hammett's guitar better too (they catch up in a big way on "Rust in Peace"). But mainly it's not that Megadeth is worse, it's that they're a step behind. By their 2nd CD Metallica had developed, if not nuance, then at least a 2nd gear (that gear being "sad acoustic"), which gives it some much-needed variety. And by their late-80s CDs they're a borderline-prog tour-de-force. By contrast "Peace Sells" is kind of stuck in the same developmental phase as "Kill 'Em All", that is, one-dimensional thrash. That makes it fine but not great. I spent a fair amount of time with it, because I like Metallica so much but hadn't listened to this one cover-to-cover before. Part I think of what makes the title track stand out so much is that it's so much more fun that the rest of the CD, which is kind of an unfortunate combo of self-serious, abrasive, and not-quite-good-enough. So that title track really does shine, but I'm mostly selling the rest of it.

"We have Metallica at home", just kidding Megadethheads! Just good solid heavy rock, I think they shine more when they go away from the melodic stuff and commit to shredding. Also it gets into weird spots sometimes, I Aint Superstitious is just a roadhouse blues jam that sits in a weird place among all the epic stuff around it. Also two discs is too much.

This isn’t really my jam but these fellas can play the hell out of those instruments so that’s gotta be worth a couple stars right?

Very talented noise makers. 1 or 2 of these songs in a row is fine. A whole album is rough. But that's my preference and it's not made to take away from the very obvious talent on display.

“I’m too busy listening to MEGADETH to answer the phone” January 19, 2025 HL: “The Conjuring”, title track, “Good Mourning”

Not my style but doesn't deserve the hate it gets on this list.

The music, the guitars, bass and drums are great! Unfortunately Dave Mustaine’s voice just doesn’t hit the right spot. Comparing this to Master of Puppets which also came out in 1986 I know which I’d rather listen to.

Funny... Woke me up...

Yeah fine Can't see me listening again but it does the job Like a 3

3 stars

in '85, you could call up a handful of friends to hang out in your garage and play the same riffs over and over again

Interesting how what was loud and metal at the time gives more of a hard rock vibe now. Classic though. Currently would sit in my music to vacuum the house genre.

Wish it was more metal

I love getting metal albums! This is one of the best ones I’ve had so far.

My score is really 3.5 From modern perspective it sounds like they constantly hold back :D Also you just need to be in the pit at the concert, not at home with a cup of tea listening on the couch. Appreciated the live tracks. I love live recordings in general, love hearing the audience's responses. I didn't have patience to finish disk 2, it became repetitive at some point. Also feels like a product of its time. Tho it aged well :)

A bit intense sometimes

Better than expected! Turns out I don't hate metal anymore :)

They aren't Slayer, but I appreciate Megadeth. It's easy to think that this is just loud and fast and doesn't take much talent - but I dare you to try to play it. :) I also like how (good) metal incorporates changes in the rhythms, time signatures, and tones throughout each song. Keeps it interesting. Megadeth certainly excels at that.

Böses pacing Keine einzelne Sekunde langweilig, aber halt böserst nicht mein Genre

When forced to pick a side in the Metallica vs. Megadeth divide, it's easy, I'm a Metallica guy, but I do respect what Mustaine and crew managed to pull off here given their lack of resources. It is not as refined as Metallica, and this doesn't hold up to their 1986 release MASTER OF PUPPETS, but then nobody else in the thrash scene could create the kind of masterful thrash and metal that Metallica were making either. While this is 2nd place behind Metallica, this is far better than most of the rest. The transitions, harmonies, and counter melodies need work, but Megadeth would get there eventually, even if it was inconsistently. A rating of 3 seems fair for being on an all time list like this for its influence, while lacking the all-time execution that would deserve a 4 or 5. My favorite of this album was "Good Mourning/Black Friday".

Right after Metallica- I am metaled out for a bit. Again nothing I would casually listen to, but a song or two from this during a workout isn’t a bad thing.

Not in the mood

Dave, you always were a little annoying.

This is very much not my kind of music. Even more so than rap/hip-hop these days, honestly. That said, it's a really solid album. I don't know that I personally would ever call it great. But I won't argue with anyone that does say that about this album. To me, the most important thing for this genre is that there isn't anything that I dislike about it, which is true in this case! There's nothing abrasive in the mix, instrumentation or vocals. If I was a metal head, this probably gets a much higher rating. Favorite Song(s): Peace Sells

another face melter

I don't think there's ever been a band whose sound is easier to define just from its name. This is exactly what you'll expect it to be. Skillful guitar work, and songs like "Peace Sells" almost rise to an Alice Cooper-esque level of songwriting.

Early metal that still thrashes. The drummer is absolutely mad and kills it. This band paved the way for many of today’s metal and metal sub-genre artists. This is a solid record.

Not me, that’s who’s buying. I didn’t hate it but I’m no thrash fan

A musical vehicle for Dave Mustaine who wanted to show Metallica how much of a better guitarist he is.

Not a huge metal fan, but this was fine overall. I probably prefer Metallica on any given day, but this was clearly influential.

A few great tunes, but enough t(h)rash mixed in. No disrespect but this era of metal is not for me.

I really wish the linked albums were the closest to the origin track listings - these epic deluxe remasters are a bit much. I did not need mega Megadeth! Today was not the day for this album, but it was ok. On the verge of being too metal for me, but ultimately it was pretty fun

Not my thing in any shape or form. Not helped by being almost completely devoid of any melody. And every song sounds the same. But there is some incredible guitar work here, especially the bass.

The Megadeath album(s) I had before didn't impressive me, but I thought this one was well constructed and had quite a bit of variety in it's sound. All around pretty good. 3/5.

Best Song: Peace Sells. Sort of interesting, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and a decent tempo. Worst Song: The Conjuring. That kind of chugga-chugga rhythm that I really dislike from this era of thrash. Overall: It's okay. Sadly, like some early eras of rap, I think early thrash has been totally eclipsed by what came later. This may have been very influential for its time, but with modern ears it just sounds slow and dated.

Kaupallinen levy, sanon minä (toki suomalaisen näkökulmasta, täällähän metalli kelpaa). Popahtava. Hiukan tylsät sanoitukset ainakin ekalla kuuntelulla. Ei herätä mussa kauheesti tunteita, mutta toimi sen verran hyvin työmatkakävelymusiikkina, että posin puolella ollaan.

Good classic heavy metal. Funny how it's no where as near heavy to me now as it was back then.

I've never heard this before. Interesting. Not something I'd listen to probably, but not bad. Vocals remind me a lot of Steven Pearcy from Ratt, which was also a San Diego / SoCal metal band. Ratt preceded Megadeth by a few years, so I wonder if Pearcy had any influence on his vocals.

It’s nice to know you can do thrash metal without having a mumbler on vocals. That and their cover of Willie Dixon‘s “ain’t superstitious,“ (look it up) made this an enjoyable listen.

I’m more tolerant than I was at 12. I’ll try again at 88.

Never been a huge Megadeth fan, but I liked this more than I thought I would. Still, they're a notch or two down from Metallica, in terms of songwriting and, for me at least, singing. 3.5*

I remember being quite impressed with Rust In Peace, but I was slightly less enamoured with this. Still decent enough, in that cartoonish, OTT heavy metal kinda way, I think? It's getting harder and harder to know what I think about albums these days, tbh.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Maybe because it’s spooky season

Better than the last Megadeth album on this list.

Really enjoying their ability to be upbeat and occasionally even happy tonally while still maintaining the heaviness. Some blues stuff in there? Way cooler than I was expecting.

This one's not too bad, actually. The constant breakneck speed does get tiring towards the end, but there are some cool moments throughout. Probably not going to return to this a lot or at all but it definitely merits the inclusion on this list. Key tracks: Wake Up Dead Peace Sells

I like this, just not in the dosage provided. It becomes terribly samey after 2-3 tracks.

megadeath? More like megabland

Good enough.

Alright but prefer their later albums

I've never been a metal kinda person so this album does get exhausting by the end, even if it's a short 36 minutes (hell yeah). Even then you do get the point of the songs after about 2 minutes.

If I'd never listened to Megadeth or Metallica, or Thrash Metal, it's possible that I would maybe rate them the same, who knows, but as it stands, one of those had a rather big role in my musical upbringing during early teenage years, the other did not. It's this one here. Sure, they got riffs in spades but those don't go anywhere near a good, engaging song. With vocals from Dave Mundane. Not impressed. Whole things's quite the blur, sonically and musically. But I'm also not in the mood today for music like th [...] Wait. Just quickly put on Master of Puppets and See? Battery starts and I AM in the mood. This is totally servicable in its genre but it's Thrash Metal for connaisseurs of shredding speeds, which I am not.

good - not amazing, guitar work is superb but I'm not a particular fan of the vocal

I'm an age where Youthanasia was the first Megadeth album I remember - and I listened to that on repeat forever. Maybe it's my memory, or maybe I'm just older and more jaded, but this album sounds almost flat compared to that. It's clearly Megadeth. Tons of energy, tons of riffs, but it never really peaks for me.

Thrash staple with lots of great riffs, but not really for me

No soy muy fan de este género de Metal, pero el disco no está mal. Tampoco me lleva a querer escuchar todo de la banda.

This isn't really my thing. I enjoy some of the guitar, but overall this genre just doesn't do it for me.

It’s definitely metal.

Missing all the heart from Rust in Peace 3.5/5

3 out of 5. I love speed and thrashing guitars, and this album has both, but after a few songs it all seemed to blend together too much.

Not bad... but vocals aren't really my thing

Like the music but not a fan of Dave Mustaine voice

maybe four stars in actuality since it was pretty good, but just wasn't in the right mood

Fun in small doses, the bloated extras album is a bit much. Better than Metallica.

As insanely cool the guitar work and drums are; it's a relentless 35 minutes of thrash metal. (I skipped the live tracks on the deluxe edition.)

Considering the other groups on this list who are classified as "thrash metal," I'm not sure I would consider this thrash metal. Some songs are thrash. Really liked Peace Sells, Devil's Island, Wake up Dead and My Last Words. Not sure I would ever listen to this album again, but definitely liked Megadeth more than I thought I would.

Metallica spin off. Interesting at times. Goes on a bit

good clean fun

Another album that I've been writing off for decades. Still not and likely never will be a full fledged metal fan, but damn it if this isn't better than I expected it to be.

Not my favorite Megadeth album. I feel like Megadeth had sort of an opposite trajectory as Metallica: while Metallica came on the scene as pioneers in thrash, they gradually shifted their sound to be a little more standard metal and accessible for everyone. Megadeth started thrash-ish, but got more into extreme thrash as their career went on. I think Peace Sells is pretty clearly thrash, but not as extreme as Rust in Peace, which I much prefer.

Very enjoyable 3.5

I quite liked this, good guitar riffs, but at 1 hour 30 mins it was too long. Not sure there was a need for the live versions

A fun album that goes hard on the thrash metal right from the get go. In a similar vein to Metallica's Master of Puppets and Slayer's Reign in Blood, except it takes the speed to another level. Best: Peace Sells Worst: I Ain't Superstitious 2.5 stars

Fun, bouncy. Nothing that stands out, but a solid hour of enjoyable riffs. Would be nice to have some more pleasant vocals to offset the constant growl, but I liked it overall.

Respect the band but not for me.

Not bad, not rly my scene tho

Good but i have no idea why its on this list

Good to have some more metal on this list, and Peace Sells...But Who's Buying is baseline enjoyable, it's just maybe not a really good representation of the genre and deserving of a place on the list. Maybe that's just personal preference though, it's not really heavy, it's full of shredding solos to the point that they're overused and lose their sense of purpose, it's basically an indulgence into 'look what I can do!', and while it might've been one of the first albums to really push thrash as a style, loads of albums have come along since and done things a lot more skilfully. It's a solid to low 3, since I gave Slipknot's self-titled effort a higher 3 the last time we had some decent metal. That was 89 albums ago and the closest we've had since then is Korn, yet we're inundated with new wave bollocks.

Not my cup of tea but not all that bad... 55/100

Classic Megadeth. I don't care about this band or this style of music, but this is obviously some of the best. Jarring way to begin my weekend morning.

Enjoyed parts of this, but couldn’t find myself getting into this. Tempo of this kind of metal gets repetitive to me.

Ok but not amazing? A bit garage-band-y

Dave Mustaine and the lost art of holding a grudge
