Reviews (page 6 of 8)

I completely lost interest in alternative music in the late1990s/2000s. I had kids (who liked pop music), and a busy life, and I thought it was just that I was getting old and irrelevant that I wasn't particularly interested in a lot of the new alternative music coming out. I read enough to be aware of the bands that were getting critical acclaim (The National, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc, etc), but I just thought I was getting old and just didn't get it. These days I am less inclined to blame myself. I really try with these records, but they mostly don't light my fire. That said, this album is the best I have heard so far from this cohort. The songs are appealingly melodic, and clearly growers. They didn't grab me at first listen, but I can tell that they could, potentially, grow on me a lot. I like this more than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, of which I cannot remember a single note, despite repeated listening. This is much better than the Arcade Fire or The National, who are both boring and pretentious. I vaguely recall "Outtasite" from the radio when it was first released. The songwriting is melodic and fairly straightforward (c.f. the overly literary blancmange from the Arcade Fire or The National, or even later Wilco records). There are a handful of pretty good songs here, played with dynamics and a rough-edged verve. I dig the unpolished and spacious production. I think the double album was a mistake. I mean, Outtasite and Outtamind are different recordings of the same song. That's padding the runtime a bit, and we really don't need that. I think a 40 minute album of highlights would have had a much stronger impact, although maybe the double album run-time strengthens the inevitable Exile on Main Street comparisons. It's pretty good, but it ain't no Exile. So, over all, pretty good. I like the cover art. Three stars.

I'm sure I spend too much time wallowing in angsty and gloomy playlists but here's some straightforward unironically joyfully twangy country/rock. It's hard to pin down the sound since they are so meandering and guileless, happy and fun. It's like a G-rated Pavement produced by Daniel Lanois. Nine Inch Nails they are not, which would explain why this band is new to me. I resisted tapping my feet and cracking a smile, but the gleeful steel guitar and jangly banjo won me over.

another good "not for me" alt-rock album 5/10

3.2 - “Being There” by Wilco? More like “Steering Clear” by Won’t-co.

Jam band y

This album is pretty good and mellow, but very sad. I like the instrumentals a lot. Red-Eyed and Blue is a good song and I also like the last song a lot.

Bit country for me

A little slow and sappy for my tastes but still good music

One of my favorite albums of all time is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. And I really enjoyed Ghost is Born and the live record from Chicago which features many of these songs. But everything else Wilco has made just didn't click with me. Including much of this. Maybe Tweedy is too deep into his drug days or something but that Wilco magic just isn't there on this record. It's sooooo close. And when they lost that magic after they hit big, it too is soooo close. I want to like this more. I just can't.

Strong second album from W. More Americana/alt-country than later ones. It sprawls a bit but its solid.

Not bad but I doubt I’ll remember any of it.

A real mixed bag of country and rock with a indie twist. This would be better if it wasn't so long. Cut both "Otta Mind" versions, "Why would you wanna live", "Monday", "Don't Forget the Flowers" and shorten the almost 7min "Dreamer in my Dreams". That would cut 20 minutes and then I could give it a 4.

This one did not immediately hit me so I can only give it a 3 stars on first lesson though I will listen further.

Liked it but a bit on the depressing side...

Ganska bra

Third time I’ve gotten a 6/10 I’ve already heard in the space of a week. Knowing what Wilco would be doing creatively later in their career does make this unreasonably long alt-country record feel a bit rudimentary, but it’s not bad.

good but kind of boring, not many standout songs

Ok. Really hard to judge off one listen, sounds alright. But some just sounded a bit dull.

Decent listen, long as hell but not awful

I usually love Wilco, and actually this wasn’t the exception but this was loooong and some of the tracks are stuffed material

I'm a casual fan but I dig Wilco from what I've heard. This isn't the strongest album of theirs that I've listened to but I enjoyed it. It covers quite a bit of range over the course of the 2 discs with some nice varied instrumentation.

Just kill your darlings.

Good tracks here and there but nothing too special.

Actually had more of a Early Stones vibe than I expected

Pick a genre, my dude.

He’s a bit sad

hailed as an alt-country masterwork, one can’t help but be amazed at how gracefully Wilco’s Being There oscillates between the brashness of rock with the mellow vulnerability of folk and country. the music is performed with an infectious urgency, such that even in its more downtempo moments, Being There still manages to maintain a singular pace. the production feels rich, and Jeff Tweedy has a voice that continues to carry emotions louder than the powerful compositions. but Being There’s pace and agility are bogged down by a length that forces it to drag, giving itself over to tedium even before you reach the album’s halfway point. with none of the songs standing out from each other (even in spite of their seeming sonic diversity), all we’re left with is a bloated, exhausting record whose length overwhelms any semblance of feeling it may evoke. Wilco is usually said to be some grand name in the world of alt-rock music, but on Being There, it mostly sounds like they’re soiling a wall for too long, with very little of it truly sticking.

Wilco is one of those bands that on paper I should absolutely love, but I just haven't clicked with them that way. I don't dislike them, but I also don't like them enough to seek them out all that much. I remember hearing "Outtasite (Outta Mind)" on the radio a bit, and I'm pretty sure I had it on a CMJ New Music Monthly CD or some similar comp. They have some songs I quite enjoy for sure but that's about it. This is a solid album, if not a bit long.

Nice - prefer Wilco going a bit mental with guitars, but this was one of the better recent offerings on this site

One of my favorite prog albums

Definitely enjoyed this album, good vibes throughout.

It’s hard to absolutely love this album if you’re not already a huge fan of the genre. I like the occasional alt-rock or indie album and this one is decent but I think it just runs too long. Along with the songs only being decent but not incredible. 5/10

хммм i dont know what to say...

-I do not understand "Misunderstood." The intro drum build is crazy and then it goes out to a very lame bit of slow song. Then it jumps back and forth between cool and boring. -"Monday" is just a banging rock song out of nowhere -"The Sunken Treasure" and "Kingpin" are cool -Too much boring on a very long album for me

Not nearly as enjoyable as a Yankee Hotel foxtrot. The up-tempo songs kinda sound hokey a little bit.

A few stand out numbers like their latter stuff. Production is not my thing

31st December 2022 Listened on the drive up to Leicester for NYE with Joe and Adna. Can’t remember much other than enjoying it! Nice blend of indie and country.

Enough twang without going full zang. In other words, my expectations were exceeded. Star down for overstaying its welcome though.

I liked it, nothing too memorable on here. The first song was good and maybe I'll come back to listen just to find more from this dragged out album. The sound and vibe is there for me, but it was background music from the get go.

There's a lot here, 19 tracks. Not sure I've got it all on first listen, but there's a lot going on. Need to relisten.

Late night Warm bath Beer on the porch This is music for the mellow moments To wring out the rage This is the poignant twang of yearning To wrestle you into the moment Listen and lounge! Listen and lounge!

I had friends that gushed over this band. I never listen enough to them to have an opinion. Know that I've listened to this album, my opinion about Wilco is... Meh. Very talented musicians, great chill vibe, a little folksie and a little edgy... know I get it, they sound like the Grateful Dead... but not quite. I could listen to this album over an over but it'll always leave just a dull impression. I could enjoy listening to Wilco while hanging out with friends at a summer festival, but I didn't hear anything that caught my attention to cause me to turn away from my friendly conversation or the book that I was reading while enjoying the nice sunny day. Basically, I wouldn't brave a cold or rainy day just to see Wilco.

Not sure why I never connected with Wilco more. I dug Uncle Tupelo. I am definitely their target audience. Most of my peers love Wilco. All the ingredients are there: good songwriting and musicianship, etc. But I don't know, their music just leaves me a little flat. They seem a little safe, even when they venture into the noisier bits. Also, Jeff's vocals don't draw me in for whatever reason. (Part of what made Uncle Tupelo great was the mix between his and Jay's vocals.) But all of this is on me, not them, hence the 3-star rating. Then again, Outtasite (outta Mind) is pretty great.

Being There was a pleasant surprise; well-crafted easy rock styles which are catchy enough yet never overbearing. The whole thing goes on for too long and it loses marks for that but an easy 3, Outtasite a top track.

I like this, I really do, but there's no need to make it a double album - there's not enough variety there to keep me engaged for over an hour and a quarter, and there's a fair bit of filler. That said, the pace changes a bit, there are a handful of good songs scattered through it, but it's not something I'll come back to in its entirety. 3/5.

Good album!

There are better Wilco albums than that but pretty solid

I remember finally hearing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and being a little underwhelmed. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Wilco today. Update: Good album, but very long and very dense. I feel like I need a few listens to really latch onto what all was going on. Off the first listen, I enjoyed disc one a little more. It had a bit of extra grit and experimentation to it whereas the second disc was a bit more grounded. Wilco is pretty solid!

This was an enjoyable alt country album. I enjoyed the instrumentation and vocals. It was varied in parts, with some songs having more rockabilly influence than others, but the sheer length of the album really weighed it down. There wasn't really a bad song, but it did start to sound the same after a while.

Good but not my style.

Lovely spare folk rocky goodness

This is a very different Wilco than most people know from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. More Alt-Country than Alt-Rock. If I'm honest I'd never really heard this early Wilco before and suddenly their inclusion on Mermaid Avenue makes a lot more sense, something I've always been confused by. A lot of these songs are really great. You can hear Tweedy starting to head a little towards his later sound. The influence of bands like Pavement are all over this and tells a rather intriguing story of an alt-country musician starting to reinvent his sound into something a bit more enigmatic. I particularly like when the dissonant and noisy bit surface for a minute and you think "Yep, this is Wilco". The main problem is sweet christ on a bike it's a slog. Not because it significantly drops in quality, but because its an hour and 20 long. I'm a firm believer that if you don't have a particular reason to write a double album, don't do it! This could have been two releases and it would have been great! But you run out of so much energy after the 15th alt-country song that its really not doing its self any favours. Why did no one sit him down and go "Jeff... its an hour and seventeen minutes, tone it back a bit mate." The main feeling that I'm left with after listening to Being There is, why didn't I just go listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot? Because of the list obviously, but I don't think I'll ever consciously put this on again over YHF.

Rocked a little harder than I expected.

Aardig album.

A long breezy slice of acoustic indie that might be enough to get me to explore Wilco a bit more

I liked a few of the songs quite a bit but the double album was a little long.

While the songs were generally nice, this album was way too long.

Ålriet

Enjoyable, not really offensive, but very generic and boring in some parts. Some songs here are super catchy though.

Nice country rock album. It is very long though and begins to get stale about halfway through.

i love some good indie country type music, this album was so long tho

It was just ok.

Unexpected sounds, tonality and rhythms. Lyrically the album is just a little more interesting than expected, but still not to thought provoking. All round nicely produced, the indi/alt vibe comes through without feeling homemade are half-assed.

It's country pop, I guess. Good album, but not my type of music.

Wasn't aware of what genre Wilco fell into, but enjoyable music.

This was perfect for a rainy day. Really solid indie rock.

Maybe if it wasn't a double album. I liked most of it, but some parts of felt languished 3/5

6/10. Some pretty nice songs, but a lot more that were just not very memorable. Probably higher quality songs than the other Wilco album I've had, but the runtime is really a lot.

Although the running time is too long for what its worth, Being There was a pretty pleasent listen that doesn't have a strong fit in a music genre.

I think the music is a bit dull compared to the lyrics its alright I guess.

I just had a Wilco album two weeks ago, so the memory of the other one was still fresh. I think I liked this one better, or maybe I’m just getting more familiar with their sound.

I'm a big fan of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot so have tried a few times to get into other Wilco albums, but none have clicked so far. Being a double album, there's a lot to unpack here, but some of it was great. I'll need to give it more time to get my head around it all.

Pretty good did enjoy it.

Highlights: Monday, I Got You. Balancing between the conviction that I should like Wilco, and the reality that I'm mostly indifferent. It's good, it's just that I'm not really into it.

Didn't need to be a double album at all, there are only about three songs on disc two as good as the songs on disc one. After slogging through that to find the closing track is a with a forgettable, cough-ridden bar-room blues with a false ending is deeply unrewarding. The best songs are great, but as an album, meh.

It’s pretty good, but I was expecting so much more. And tbh a lot of the songs reminded me of Jan from the office singing about her assistant. Smth about the whiny tone

It may be an unpopular opinion among Wilco fans, but it’s a hill I’m willing to die on: Wilco was at its best and most interesting when Jay Bennett was in the band. No disrespect to Jeff Tweedy intended, I don’t mean to imply that Jay was the mastermind of the band, not at all. Just that his playing on albums like Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot complimented the songs extremely well. To me, his ability to create an atmosphere with his playing was an important part in the greatness of those records. For me, the post-YHF records don’t have that same sort of cohesion, at least not as much as the records with Jay did - even if the band was reaching a boiling point while he was a member. So yeah, I like Being There. I have a hard time with double albums: I find they’re often too bulky to keep my attention, and Being There isn’t an exception, but taken in chunks, it’s enjoyable. As a whole, Being There doesn’t quite match the heights of Summerteeth (please tell me that record made the list) or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but it’s a bit of a blueprint for those two records: experimental and stylistically varied, with the right mix of upbeat songs and melancholia to keep it from feeling too same-y.

got very samey, definitely too long

Likeable enough. Seemed like pretty standard alt-rock with extra country leanings, and I wasn’t feeling whatever extra it supposedly brought to that particular table.

a bit underwhelming

Rock, country.

never had been a fan of Wilco and this did not change that fact. Great musicianship, otherwise meh...

It’s Wilco!

Listened through even though it was double album length, which is a miracle for this. Nothing jumped out too hard, but I enjoy Jeff Tweedy a lot.

Whatever. Pretty country and some experimental.

Wilco tu es chiant à mourir

This album was alright but probably not something I’d seek out to listen to. Just an average 3*

Started off slowly but I was enjoying it by the end.

I enjoyed this more than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Solid folk/indie, good chilled vibe.

I would say alternative rock is my favourite genre, so I was excited to see this one in my list. I was less excited when I listened to it... It wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out for me. Also, some sections of some songs got a little crazy, in my opinion, for example at the end of "Misunderstood".

Mirroring my comments on Drive By Truckers from recently… Love this band but this is not the prime example of their work album I would have picked. While it has some great individual songs, it’s overly long and can’t maintain the momentum all the way.

My co-judge informed me that I should have given Echo & the Bunnymen a 4 since she had most of their albums and liked that one. She also said WILCO sounded like the Stones, which is interesting since the critics compared this album to Exile on Main Street. I prefer it when Wilco settle into a rootsy, alt-country sound, which Tweedy's voice is better suited for. He isn't a good rock singer and the handful of rockers on the disc seem like they belong on another CD by another band. Exile on Main Street, by comparison, also borrows from different genres, but no song sounds out of place.

A delightful slice of Americana

Pretty decent, I liked some of the catchy upbeat songs. Would give it another listen.

An alright country pop album

Country alternativo muy popero. Ni fu ni fa.

schmilco.... possibly the best and most revered melancholy indie i have never been massively into

I like the idea of alternative country and this isn't too bad. Not really Country at all in places (imo) and it improves with every listen although I prefer their later albums but don't see why they have so many entries in the 1001 albums.

Decent, but kind of lame. Definitely way too long and would have greatly benefited from some of the chaff being cut from the album. 2.5 rounded up.

Easy to listen to

Guitar based, 70’s influenced

Bien, mais littéralement deux fois trop long.

It's good stuff!

don't mind it, very backgroundy music though

Better than the last one. I enjoyed the slight hinky tonk feel of some of the tracks. Still not quite my cup of tea.

I'm lukewarm on their "big" album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot so I wasn't psyched about getting this one but you know.... I like this one a lot better. Well....the first half at least. Another album that's just way too bloated for its own good. I'm not a fan of the uber-country tunes [stay tuned for the 2nd half...] but after a half hour or more already "Misunderstood" "Outtasite..." "I Got You..." "Hotel Arizona" are great songs - very interesting musically, and in contrast to the YHF album I'm not minding Tweedy's vocals (again, outside the country milieu) at all. I'll have to revisit YHF but I do feel like they were mixed a little differently here. More of a 90s-vocal mix rather than the 2000s vocals-way-up-front style that has become so prevalent. So... I wrote all of this up through the first ~10 or 11 songs. Do/should I detract my feelings since I really don't like the album much after that? There's a real slowing down of momentum for me; a lot of what doesn't interest me starts in around track 12 ("Someday Soon") - I mean...i don't hate it. It just doesn't interest me. I do enjoy the last two cuts (of 19 so... I mean, the more times you come to the plate, you've got more chances to get a hit I guess...). I'll pretend the album was only 10 tracks long. I mentioned it in my other Wilco review but there's some similarity to my favourite band Rheostatics; a little less oddball which is unfortunate :) but at its best there are some really nice surprises here (I might make my own edited cut of the album omitting the snoozers...)... probably 3.5 stars and just can't bring myself to boost it to 4 but I might listen to this again. 7/10 3 stars.

6/10 Best song - Misunderstood

I like this album. Had not heard anything from it before -- at least that I can recall -- and I have a feeling had I heard it when it came out, I would've been pretty into it. I don't know how this band was in concert back then, but my hunch is I would have very much enjoyed watching and listening to them play live. In an unexpected way, I kind of like it more because no particular song blows me away, but instead it's just a good, solid, steady album of interesting rock (not sure what to call it -- is this "indie rock" or something like that?). Good stuff.

Decent album. Wilco is a band that always sounds good but halfway through an album you feel like it could still be the first song. Or that it could be any of the other albums. I’d say being there was probably the first one where they really found their style that is unique to them. Some of the songs are solid but this album isn’t as refined as some of their others. 6.0/10

1:20h de álbum eu tô out

Not for me I don't think. Some good stuff but not enough.

Too long, a bit too country and western… this was alright though!

Sounds like a good company for a road trip. I quite like it.

Indiezinho legalzinho.

Pretty good - pleasant, and every now and then something grabs my attention

Não reconheci a empolgação do rock alt country.

6/10 Very calm Good for mornings

As with any double-album, this will take time to unpack and fully appreciate. The good news is I liked this on my first listen, so I could see this growing on me even more. Hard to decide between a 3 and a 4 on this one, but in this moment I lean towards a 3. Decent record with some enjoyable moments throughout.

It's a good album. That sort of modern Americana doesn't do much for me, sadly - and the Stones pastiche tracks do little for me. However, the sad feely tracks are sublime - everything over 5 minutes, Red Eyed and Blue, a few others. Plumbing the depths is where this one flies. There's a great single album in here, without all the country crap and the trudgy rockers.

93. Being There - Wilco 19 tracks. Never heard of them & although it didn't start well it really grew on me. So much variety that it's impossible not to find something you like. No idea what sort of music they play, (variety) but am really intrigued to hear more. 👍 3/5

Its okay, nothing special

Lots of genre hopping across the rock spectrum, taking inspiration from hard rock, pop, psychedelia, surf rock, echoes of grunge and shades of blues rock. When Wilco goes off on these tangents ‘Being There’ is very enjoyable. In the end though, for me, the slow acoustic ballads and the overall length of the album weigh the whole thing down. Despite these criticisms, it’s still a solid record that's worth your time.

Good Sunday morning record

I’m still stuck on whether I like this band or not - the tracks that borrow heavily from early ‘00s rock with some country influences shine on this one, and some of the slower tracks with more country elements are enjoyable as well. There are just a few songs here that completely get lost in the country veneer that sound so bad I can’t make my mind up as to whether they derail the whole thing.

that was pretty good

Fullkomin haustplata, mjög næs.

This album is really in a strange genre - alt country, rock, punk(?) with a bit of noise in it (i.e. Sunken Treasure). I'm not sure I can digest it in just one day, especially as I think the album would have been better if the picked the best tracks to make a single album instead of a double. Treating the album as a whole, I'll give it a 3. If it would have been a single album with the most interesting upbeat songs - now it rises to at least a 4 on a first listen.

I suspect under different circumstances I might be willing to give this album more than 3 stars. However, today being the day I listened to it, and in lieu of more compelling feelings, it stays at 3. It's OK, and I wouldn't turn it off if someone were playing it, but I also wouldn't put it on if I saw it in their collection.

The issue with this album is how well-behaved it all is. It's really hard to find faults with the playing, but it's that Formica quality which ultimately makes it impossible to love. Why listen to a pastiche of Exile on Main Street and Grievous Angel when you can listen to Exile on Main Street and Grievous Angel? By the end I was screaming for the Stooges or something with a bit of blood to it. Now, this is not a bad album. But that's the problem. It's so well-mannered, it doesn't take any real risks, and as such there's nothing to root for. If it's your bag, that's fine, we won't fall out, but surely you recognise on occasion that this feels programmed rather than written?

Hmm… couldn’t get too excited by this…

I'll admit, knowing what I do about Wilco, I am not excited to see them here. In my mind they're a jam-band like Phish who play on forever. I like an album that moves rather than lingers. I see 19 tracks, and I'm worried. But at least I get the weekend to get through it. This is a lot of Wilco. I wager too much Wilco. But their full style is on display here. A little rock, a little pop, a little folk, a little country. Just all of it. But I think I'd prefer the less is more approach.

not wilcos best but influential

Couple good songs

As a non-country fan, this double-length feature doesn't bode well with me, especially for the more traditional songs near the end. I like the psychedelic sound and abstract lyrics. But songs aren't very coherent. I mean, just look at the first three and how different they are. Please reorder the tracks. "Misunderstood" sounds like something that I should like, but it doesn't do it for me. "Far far away" is mellow and relaxing but that's all it has for it. "Monday" reminds me of "Rocks Off" by Rolling Stones which is enough for me to like it. There's a lot of power pop and alt rock songs here mixed in with the country base (not sure what people are on about punk). I hate country folk "Forget the flowers." "Red-Eyed Blue" is what I think of when someone says alt country, and it's a pretty good song using innovative techniques to modify the standard country formula. "Hotel Arizona" is another psychedelic song with surreal lyrics I like, but it's not exactly country is it? "Sunken Treasure" is my favorite. Not too crazy about most of the songs on the second side, and I'm not sure how much of this attributes to my distaste of country, but some stand out. And I do admit at least half are decent, even if they don't appeal to me. I hear their later indie rock album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is much more interesting, so I look forward to hearing their progression with this context.

Väldigt ojämn.

I liked the slower, more laid-back, stuff more than when they try to "rock". I can see listening this on a lazy afternoon, although none of the songs had a hook that really spoke to me.

I love me some Wilco but this wasn’t my favorite. Easy listening for sure but not many standouts.

I have this major UK vs US rivalry stuck in my head for anything from the 90s. So far the Brits keep winning out. They just seem so much more listenable and less of a chore to get thru each album. I had heard of Wilco a they're one of those bands I thought I probably should have done a bit more research into. After the opening track I immediately thought I'd been dealt another depressing hour of American alt-rock. Very happy to say how wrong I was! This album covered a wide and varied part of the musical spectrum and instead of just waiting for it to finish I found myself wanting more. Will definitely get more runs in the future.

Literally the only exposure I've ever had to Wilco was in an interview with Jpeg.Mafia, Basically they talked about his influence on the album black Ben Carson. Specifically a very controversial song it. Anyway, I liked the album quite a bit. They are gonna get more listens in the future. The end of the album had a weird change of pace where it sort of turned into a Country album. Not my speed tbh, But even then it wasn't bad. Solid work on it tbh.

This was a very good and versatile album. Every song sounded different - in a good way. I'm tempted to give this a 4 star rating, but I'm not quite sure. I would most definitely give this 3.5 / 5 star rating if that was possible.

Some solid indie rock rode trip tunes, but a little more country than I like.

A good alt/rock record with a sound that would not be out of place on some radio stations today. The first disk of the double album was stronger than the second. I think they should have left it at the end of the first one. Best: Outtasite (Outta Mind) Worst: Someone Else's Song 2.5 stars

Very refreshing to not have some old ass hard rock recommended to me to painfully listen to. The album is a-okay in the songs it provides as I like the Alternative Country and Alternative Rock genres that make up the album. But is hard to understand certain words he says at times. Plus, the album is just good background music to listen to while doing something to nod along to it honestly. Would Give it: 3/5

Alt country. Good singer songwriter. Very solid just didn’t love it.

I liked the first half, then I got a bit bored and stopped listening to the second half. I’ll definitely check out their other stuff though

Good easy music to listen to….. Jeff Tweedy did good here…..

Enjoyed it but wouldn't hunt it out again

First song great, the other ones were quite sleepy. 2.5

Good album. It is really long though. Almost had enough by the end.

I suppose you had to be there.

Q Magazine favourites Wilco sounding a lot like a band beloved by Q Magazine. The big takeaway here is, if you like this album then you won't regret treating yourself to a Q Magazine subscription. If Q Magazine still exists of course, which it probably doesn't as print media is dead.

Very listenable. Almost hit the like button a time or two. Check back on this one

Probably a 3.5

Quite liked this, change of pace and a bit different, probably a 3.25

Good laid back album

I've listened to a couple Wilco albums. They're a fine band, nothing special. But maybe that's the charm, you know? Just a good old-fashioned folk rock band. They don't demand too much of you, though this album does demand quite a bit of time. Jeff Tweedy is a good songwriter though and seems like a cool dude. Enough tracks I enjoyed on here to say it's a good album for me. Favorite tracks: Say You Miss Me, Far Far Away, The Lonely 1. Album art: Simplicity to the extreme. Fits what I said about the band pretty well. There's a charm to this kind of simplicity. 3.5/5

Original dashboard confessional, but with some pop 90s influences actual rating 3.5/5

Kinda slow. Liked the next Wilco album more.

I came to Wilco later on in their career, and although I enjoy certain songs in their earlier catalogue, I struggle with the lethargic mood of much of it. It brings me down, I find it depressing and exhausting. "Sunken Treasure" is a good example of that. I like "Outtasite". Some really soft and beautiful songs too, like "The Lonely 1." They can get really heavy too (in a good way) like on "Misunderstood" which I think is a solid opening track. Overall a good album but not one I will likely come back to.

Decent album. Not much more to say.

Need to re-listen and try more wilco

Not bad, better than I thought

correct genre , a few decent songs . many slow songs tho

I liked more than I expected relaxed and folky a bit country but not bad.

Not a huge fan but I do like this and a couple their other albums.

Good. Not my thing. But still good.

Aight, very general appeal but nothing mind blowing inside

3.5, too long

Is this closer to country or indie rock? Should anyone care at all? Clearly the product of some talented musicians. The double album length is unnecessary, though the fact that it's over an hour long is masked by the steady forward energy of the songs. I don't see any magic in this particular project, but it's clear that Wilco has it. The Lonely 1, in particular, has a perfect country sound which I have not identified before: A combination of guitar strings evoking the wooden box of the instrument and the pedal steel suggesting infinite space. In other words, singing songs around a campfire with constellations bright above. The fact that I've ignored them to this point, unaware of the sonic breadth on offer, is a mark against me.

Kind of a long album. I liked the more upbeat tracks significantly more than the down tempo ones.

Im just not sure that I like Wilco that much. This album is too long. I was listening to it while running and had to change it with 3 songs left. It's just kinda boring.

Wilco's a fine enough band n all but i'm so fucking sick of hearing people go "hey, there's good country music out there! like Wilco!" Being There is like eating wings without ranch/bleu cheese. fine enough if you don't know any better, but missing a key part. the further Tweedy drifts towards indie rock, the less flavorful the music gets. that doesn't necessarily make it bad, but this really didn't do a ton for me already and it's like 76 minutes. deserves to be one of the 1001? tee bee aitch you could take this one off, but i do want to note that it's more deserving than the one with Billy Bragg

Boring

Americna folk that’s well played and his voice is quite good . It’s just a little too dull for 2 songs Let alone 20. In “I was mamed by This album “ Will certainly offer value for money with 3 or more different sounds in just the first 4 songs … it’s just a pity none of them are overly interesting

Wilco’s alt country album Being There doesn’t quite make it there. Lead writer seems like he brooding, sullen, and lonely. Top track is Monday which shows up early. Musically the album is well played, but it runs long and the songs get very similar by the hour and a quarter finish. I appreciate the double album at the going rate of a standard LP, but I think it’s why this one makes The 1001 Must Hear List. (2.25*s) Still a little too country for me…

Being There is alright. Little boring but a good finish with the last 5 songs. Wilco may be a better listen on headphones cause I wrapped the album up after my commute in the office with them on. The album was a bit too laid back and folky. Band members are good on their instruments though with nice banjo/bongo accompaniments throughout. Decent listen but not a must in my book...2.3 stars.

Never heard of album or band. Indie ish cover so again low expectations. 1 hour 20, I’m bailing after 40 if it sucks. Cool opening. Really cool what he’s doing w the guitar. Good piano and singing but this is very sad boy. It’s not horrible just way too slow for me. I like it a lot more when it kicks up in the back half. More whiny indie nonsense on far far away. It’s well written just agin not what I’m looking for. I like the western vibes though that shows some range. Another cool change of pace in Monday. Still some county aspects but much more rock poppy. Fun song. Outtasite is fine. Another generic 90s pop rock song. Nothing special so far and I’ve made it through both singles. Not good. Back to country with forget the flowers. Weird back and forth going on. Good writing on this one. Fun song but still not moving the needle. Anddd back to sad boy indie on red eyed and blue. Don’t like it. Too slow. Mid production. Good musical solo. And now 80s rock vibe with I got you. You have to respect the range and variety of songs so far. Still tho, no bangers. Hate the clapping in I got you. And right back to country with what’s the world. Forgettable song aside from the awesome organ solo. Not really a fan of either hotel Arizona or say you miss me. Both too whiny and indie for me. Good piano on Miss me though. I can tell you now this album isn’t getting a high score, but part of me doesn’t want to quit cuz I actually really like how it jumps between styles. The issue is none of the songs are very good. Meeting break. But quick comment. Maybe if their albums didn’t suck indie bands wouldn’t be independent? I’ve been told their indie to “stick it to the man” but to me it seems like they just weren’t talented enough to get a record deal, but just narcissistic enough to still think their album is good enough to release. Unless you’re one of like 5 bands, it ain’t. Keep it to yourselves and your friends who will say anything you release is good. With all that being said, obviously it doesn’t really apply to Wilco as eventually they did get a real record deal. Style of music still isn’t that good. It should’ve stayed in the 90s/early 2000s. Ok back to the album. Sunken treasure is pretty cool I guess. Good production, nothing special with vocals or lyrics. Didn’t need 6 mins of that. Back to country with someday soon. I like the country songs much better which says something because I don’t like country. Really nice guitar on this one. Outta mind sucks. Way too indie alt. Just the exact type of song I hate. And more whiny alt music with someone else’s song. Country sadness. Still doesn’t hit. I’m done, I’ve made it about an hour and it’s just not getting any better. Again, I respect the range but it’s two genres I don’t really like. JAA. 2.4/5.

Recht klassischer Gitarrenrock. Damals vielleicht interessant, aus heutiger Sicht ziemlich überholt

very much not for me

Overall, it’s fine but it didn’t set the heather alight. Favourite track: (Was I) In Your Dreams

Folky Striaght fwd Rock - heartache themes

there are some good parts on this album but i guess that's something that's gotta happen when you make the album 1623 hours long

eh, its fine, not a huge fan

it was ok, a couple of songs stood out. very chill.

This left me completed cold. I don’t hear anything on here that doesn’t feel like it is heavily in debt to something else better. And his voice is not great. Unremarkable. And far, far too long

I love me some sad boy music, but this was duuuuuuuuullllllll. Kinda U2, kinda coldplay and honestly laying near the likes of Elliot Smith and Radiohead. Honestly nowhere close. Idk man, if you wanna make sad man music you're gonna have to go for it way sadder and more pained, this was an absolute slog to get through. The cheek that Smog autoplayed after. This is what you could have been Wilco!!

Music for landlords: details obscured by caulk and too much beige paint. Forget the Flowers was the first time I felt like these guys knew what kind of music they were playing. A pure country song that was competent, though pretty middle of the road. None of this has been bad, but pretty much all of it is uninspiring to me and is like a whole album of palate cleansers. I don't know if I can eat all of those they're serving here 2.49

Nothing really memorable here. It was fine, but that’s a bit generous

Not certain why a run of the mill alternative band get to have 4 albums on this list but it just goes to show that each one of us doing this process would come up with a very different list. Nevertheless don’t think many music lovers in 100 or 50 years even will be waxing lyrical about Wilco. Doesn’t mean that this is a bad album but it just doesn’t resonate and is soon forgettable. 2/5 1/5/26

hmm. tweedious.

This album is like hitching a ride home after a snowboarding trip. You get picked up by some dudes who were in the area, but claimed they weren't snowboarding. You strike up a conversation and ask what they were doing. They tell you how they read about Justin Vernon isolating himself in a semi-ramshackled log cabin to write For Emma, Forever Ago. They love that album, so they decided to do something similar, with hopes of writing the New Zealand version of the Last Great American Novel. You ask how it went, and they assure you they have the bones of something amazing. After explaining how they relied on Uber Eats for most of their meals, you wonder if perhaps they have missed the magic that Justin Vernon was capturing. You stop asking questions, and try to enjoy some quiet. Suddenly, a song that the guys really like comes on. Humphrey, riding shotgun, asks you to look around your feet to find his harmonica. You glance down and see it, but instead of handing it to him, you swiftly kick it under the driver's seat.

I was hoping for more and didn't get it.

"I am so out of tune with you"

Just can't get into thisl

Chill de cojones, muy tranquilo. 4/10

I thought I had a decent idea what Wilco are about. Apparently not. It’s Americana that I don’t hate. But I have no desire to choose to listen to.

It was okay. I didn’t sense anything groundbreaking but it was I suppose very good for the mid nineties. Didn’t hate it, but don’t remember much of it either.

boring but not unbearable

Yeah, no. I know I’m supposed to love this band, but this is some white boy nonsense. I’m not listening to none of this.

I'm sure there was a time when this would have been a part of my musicall taste but not as much now. It borrows from so many recognizable influences and just becomes sort of a conglomeration of all of stuff thrown at the wall and some of it sticks and some doesn't.

Just far too long. Maybe others will see subtleties that I'm missing, but this record just didn't offer enough variety to just the length. What is there is very good, but eventually too much of a good thing. Would be a four-star record if it was half the length.

I cant belive they thought they were interesting enough to make a double album. Its 76 minute long and it feels like 76 days. The music itself is passable but every song sounds so similar to the other. It gets hard to judge fairly after you think youve heard the same song 5 times... I liked "missunderstood" and "Sunken treasure" was decent.

The front half of this album was more up-tempo, but as with the last album this became slow and plodding pseudo-country twang. I still don't see the fascination with these guys.

A lotttttt of filler

I expected a double album to have some sort of theme to each of the two records, but it didn't. In fact there wasn't really a theme to the album at all. It really felt like 2 or 3 different bands putting together a compilation. There's some good stuff in here, but it's buried in a sea of meh.

Give me a B! Give me an O! Give me an R-I-N-G, BORING! It’s not bad music, it’s just boring music. If you’re into that soft rock country vibe then this is just for you.

Not so much dull as soulless and uninspiring.

Kjedelig plate.

I didn't get through it. There's a fair bit of acclaim for Wilco and Jeff Tweedy's twangy charm out there, but I'm just not among those who feel that way.

It sounds like so many other things, most of which I can't quite pinpoint, but one of which is definitely the Sesame Street theme tune. I can see why the author like them, there's a bit of a Costello feel in places though without his dreadful voice. This album is fine, it's okay, nothing more.

This is going to be an unfair rating but its just too melancholic and long for me to get into this world and characters. Just not my space right now. It sounded quality but made no lasting impact.

Too Country for me personally

Snoozefest but I’d probably enjoy it if it was my only option.

A double album with a bunch of different sounds and ideas and only a couple of them are interesting.

Loved the first song. The rest was quite forgettable though unfortunately

This is clearly a serious album. It wasn't recorded with TOTP appearances in mind. It was slightly tedious, tbh. Nothing offensive in there, but it didn't half drag. Worthy, laboured, lengthy.

Aside from 1 or 2 tracks, this double album really didn't do much for me, I found it pretty boring. Not the Wilco album that I'm going to come back to. 2/5

Mostly boring without any edges to have a grip on.

Country music is not my thing. At all. Just barely made it to the end of the first album. Half a point extra for the weirdness and psychedelia they've added here and there, which I liked. I didn't like anything else. 1,5/5

Nice, Wilco. I, of course, as a proud patron of the arts, know of these gents for their contribution to the Sponbo Pantprism Movie. Their offering is, admittedly, the weakest of the songs which made it into the credits (Ocean Man and ...Psychic Wall of Energy are some incredibly steep competition), though Wilco squeezed out more list albums than Ween and The Flaming Lips combined, so I guess they had the last laugh. Outside of the Bob, I've also been meaning to listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or whatever that album was called. I remembered the name correctly? I genuinely wasn't expecting that. Anyways, if I'm to listen to Wilco at what I assume is their creative peak, then I suppose I must start with where they began to build that traction. Here goes. Fuuuuck. Double album. It seems that I'll continue to be bent over by these long-as-fuck albums until my morale has completely degraded. An alt-country album, too? That's a surprise - I thought these guys were indie rock from the get-go. Alt-country has always struck me as being the best country offshoot despite my fledgling experience with the genre. This, fortunately, gives some credence to my theory. However, as I have subtly inferred in the beginning of this paragraph, I'm not a fan of the runtime. The hold that this album had over my attention fluctuated between tracks, which is different to my experience with most albums. For every song I thought was decent, the following three tracks would fail to grab my attention. Still, the good songs were pretty alright. I can appreciate the hushed, sentimental feel that much of this album has. The piano and acoustic guitar are generally the best instruments as a result. They're nice and relaxing, with a surprising level of dynamism and fidelity. The electric guitars are no slouch, either. They give the album a good bit of bite and growl whenever the music wants to get more energetic. The rest of the instrumentation is generally pretty decent, though I must admit that I'm not a fan of the organ. It's droning and draining in the worst possible ways. Overall, this was a fine listen. It just didn't invigorate or inspire me all that much. Book time. "...the first mighty musical jump in a career increasingly distinguished by great artistic leaps and bounds." "...a shock to the system for many alt-country loyalists...". Has a wide range of styles. A critical slam dunk with a humdrum commercial performance. There isn't much on the Wikipedia page that isn't already covered in the book. Not gonna lie, I think Wilco are punching one album above their weight by having three of their works on the list. That being said, I'm pretty sure Wilco have always had a solid run with critics, and this is better than many of the other albums I've listened to through this list. Unless their non-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album bombs, then I guess I'm content with letting all three of these albums through. I cosign this inclusion.

Nah. 2.5. I know people like them but I just don’t connect.

Not my taste

If meh was an album, this would be the album. After listening to the other albums, I’ve normally finished and had an immediate opinion, however this time it was just ‘ok, that happened’. Not rubbish, good instrumentation, but very same-y and not particularly innovative.

Nothing about this caught my attention.

So unnecessarily long. Why did they put so many songs on this album when they’re all uninspired? Honestly it’s mid but the length of the album ruins even the mediocrity

Sounds like films from the early 2000s

Very country-driven, it's wild that this was made in the mid 90's cause it really sounds older than that, it's a really interesting album with some relatable song-writing that I liked, but not really much for me to revisit to.

Not that big of a fan of Wilco, I get why people like them and I understand the draw, but not really for me.

The equivalent of boiled chicken and plain white rice music. Little to nothing of actually substance has struck me yet. And I'm 4 songs in. I have what feels to be and eternity to go of just buttered noodles music. By the end of disc 1 I can say one positive thing for sure is that the creative use of instruments is not that boring. I don't mind a banjo, lap and pedal steel and harmonica. By the end of disc 2 with a 10,000 foot view these guys are responsible for Coachella Country and thats unforgivable. 👎

It’s a good indie rock record with some hints of Tweedy’s alt-country roots. It’s got the usual double-album problem of being too long. The cuts are less obvious to me though, because I just let it wash over me. There was nothing about it that made me want to let it in.

Not my cuppa

Really strange I don’t know but good

I get it only a couple songs in. Not listening to 80 minutes.

This has been on my list for years now. I can't say that I enjoyed it that much. I think the album is much too long and I only really appreciated a handful of songs. I was only familiar with a few of their songs prior to this listen and I think I might enjoy some of their later albums a bit more if their sound changes some.

Not my type

Too slow. Reminds me of country and grateful dead

This album is like 9 songs too long. It all really does sound the same. Slightly whiney voice and some acoustical guitar playing. Jason’s deli classic. 4/10

Not a Wilco fan. The singers voice is just not great.

I liked "what's the world got in store" 2

I used to like Outtasite(Outta Mind) but now not so much. The rest of it I liked even less.

It's okay, but nothing particularly mind blowing. Not to mention the fact that it's far too long. Compress this down into a single album and you might have had something more interesting. As it stands, it's perfectly competent, if a touch bland, guitar rock.

This was far too long for how mediocre this was. If I had the patience to listen to this twice I might really enjoy some of this. In the end it’s not worth the investment.

I really liked Uncle Tupelo's sound, so it has been very frustrating to me that Wilco never quite hit the same way for me

There's probably a time when this album is nice to listen to, but now wasn't the time for me. It was a bit too long too much of the same too. Enjoyed some bits more than others, perfectly fine, but at the same time I don't think anything truly stood out to me while listening. And for those that know me, this would sometimes venture into 'gekwelde man' territory for me.

I really enjoyed the Wilco collaboration with Billy Bragg featured elsewhere in this challenge. Americana is my thing. But this bored me, and I listened to it twice just to be sure. If you shoot to create a carefree everyman sound, it’s quite possible you’ll come up with a character like the neighbor who you only see at the community block party, who talk your ear off about failed romances and college football. That’s a bit harsh, so let’s just say that Wilco, as in “Will Comply,” is sometimes aptly named. A 2.

liked some of them, some were really bad

You again! Better than yankee hotel foxtrot, still long and boring

(8/19 liked songs = 42%) Pretty okay. Wasn't really a fan of some of the slower songs though. Might listen to it again in the future. First album in my journey here.

Too noodly

I did not know that Wilco was so country. In fact, I previously thought that they weren't country.

Another album that’s just eh, vocals to soft and not my style.

Not an album of happy songs. On on the whole, I preferred the Alt-Rock tracks to the Country-Rock. My favourite track was "Kingpin". A couple of the tracks echoed other music, for example "Monday" had echoes of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel", while "Someone Else's Song" most definitely used "Norwegian Wood" by the Beatles.

I feel the album has no one genre and it throws the listener off by a great force. Liked Far Far Away and a few more songs but not that influencing for me. Maybe because I share a different taste in music. Was pretty disappointed.

Got half-way through the second disk when I felt I had heard enough of this album to give a fair review. Not paricularly eye opening overall to be honest. 'Outtasite (Outta Mind)' feels like a song you've heard before and stuck a bit to my mind, but the rest passed me by. Don't have any particularly deep reflections of this, but overall it felt a bit too soft and the soft rock/country/blues blend made it a lacking of an identity.

Felt like a weak 3 type of album. Just another in album in the giant catalog of soft rock indie on this list. Nothing really to differentiate it from anything else. I know Wilco is quite popular but they honestly feel like middle-of-the-road, safe rock to me. Favourite song was Kingpin which felt like it had some funk compared to the rest (I’ve noticed I’m a real big fan of syncopation). Main drawback is it’s length which pushes it down to a strong 2.

Shit 💩

Just okay forgettable to me

I’ve tried to like Wilco. They seem like they’d be nice? They love Chicago, I love Chicago. Apparently Jeff Tweedy gets migraines; a kindred spirit. The music, to me, is just very bleh, very dad rock.

Trått

Hmm, probably should like this more than I do at 1 listen. Not hooked, a little bored

i wasn't expecting much from this, but i walked away pretty underwhelmed. it wasn't really my cup of tea. i found that it was just a bit slow... and like nothing really ever stood out. sorry Wilco, but its a 2

Overall inoffensive, but not really my cup of tea unfortunately!

I find this a really hard to judge album. Some of it is good has meaning clever musicality and then others don't and can maybe be the problem with such a long album. I question is it trying to be too Radiohead? It's just a bit all over the play no direction and just boring.

This is what I get for saying Wilco never did it for me on yesterday’s album huh. Well I can’t say much changed with this record either. Signs of ambition in a few of the instrumentals, and I liked “Forget The Flowers” a good bit, but that’s it. I don’t find much in Jeff Tweedy’s voice, it’s bland at best. 2/5

This album is a lot like a stick of gum, it just doesn’t have the flavor to go the distance or 75 minute product.

A few great songs in a sea of middling-at-best rock. Can't really see why this is on the list.

I really don't get the popularity of this band. Snooze.

Alternative, psychedelic, country 1996. Way more country than I expected. Simple, but it had soul. Someone said it was like a bunch of college kids and it is- it has the energy. Nothing stood out too much but perhaps if I return to it :)

19 songs is just way too long for an album like this.

Pretty boring honestly. Couple good bits in there but it's just too long. 1 feels slightly unfair though.
