Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I've heard this one many times along the way. I think Vicky's also got a copy of it in the albums somewhere. In 87 I was too cool to listen to something like this in public but I'd secretly drop a needle on it when I thought nobody was looking.

Overall: 7/10 Man, I still don't really love country but it really helps having Dolly on vocals. I enjoy Linda and Emmylou's voices as well, and the three of them harmonize so beautifully together, but there's just something about Dolly's inflection that tickles my ears in the best way. The songs are twangy and kind of corny like country usually is, but it's fine here. Some of the songs are straight up bangers and some of them bore me to tears. Fav Song: Those Memories of You Least Fav Song: Telling Me Lies

Three titans for country music together. Loved it, and glad I was "forced" to listen to it.

This was very soothing

Really lovely harmonies on some classic country styles. Dolly Parton is a saint and Emmylou was recently introduced to me, I should look up more of her!

beautiful

Gorgeous, heartfelt country music. I can find country quite cheesy sometimes but this hits the spot.

It's rare to see full album collaborations on this list. I enjoyed this album. "Trio" has some nice songs, none of which are bad. It belongs to the good kind of country, not that modern crap. Dolly Parton's still going strong to this day. 4 stars for "Trio".

Amazing voices, good songs!

Favorite Track: Telling Me Lies

I was in this big warehouse with my extended family. Everyone of us were kids again. My oldest uncle's daughters were being mean to me at first but they thought I was...something...I don't quite know. We were all waiting in line at this dormitory or camp like showers and however they felt about me they quickly. The second oldest cousin disrobbed and laid herself in my arm. Once there she no longer looked lie my cousin. No one looked how they really do. She laid in my arms for awhile saying something I didn't understand. Then ran off to the showers. I found myself at a row of bunk beds and an old friend of mine who keeps reappearing asked me if he wanted me to start a game. I missed him so much.

Three of the best to do it. It's not really my jam, but respect where it's due.

I never knew this collab album existed. Some serious songwriting and great voices on this. Gotta grip on wax.

Some songs remind me of Olivia Newton John in grease which I enjoy. Lots of slow country. Good vibes

How have I never heard this album? Among the greatest supergroups to ever exist. Listening to this album makes me feel guilty to be a man. Country banger after banger. Loved this!

Pretty amazing. They harmonize so well together. These three are icons!

ну хороший кантри в женском исполнении, хорошие песни

Getting these three together on an album is something special. The album itself feels like a throwback to an earlier era of country with the beautiful harmonies and the way the steel guitar is used. Very enjoyable album overall

Such a smooth, relaxing, enjoyable album. This is the pleasant country, as opposed to the annoying country lol

An outstanding album in any era - this deserves even more credit for sounding like it did in the time it came out. Perhaps inspired by the arrival of Steve Earle Dwight Yoakam and Lyle Lovett in the previous couple years this album has none of the trappings of 80s country. Just three great voices, excellent playing and some damn fine song selection.

Really enjoyed. Dolly Parton definitely the best bit of it. The first 2 songs particularly, and Wild Flower was a really nice song. All abit sameish as most country is, thats my only criticism

I was so psyched to see this come up, I'm always down for DP and friends, and it delivered for the most part, but truthfully with the star power behind this I feel it couldve been better. its still good! Made me wish I had a broken heart to relate a little more but damn if those ladies cant harmonize.

Nice country, not sure if they all sound the same or Dolly did most the singing

Despite generally not being a fan of country music, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris are two of the rare exceptions to the rule for me. I haven’t heard of Linda Ronstadt, but you know what they said: two out of three is pretty good, innit. This album gave that warm cosy feeling that a lot of softer music from the era seems to give me, regardless of genre. They may be associated with country music, but it seems more related to appearance and accent more than anything. This is pleasant, cosy folk music. And I like that.

I'm a sucker for anything Emmylou, and the bluegrass inflections help plus roots country. This is supremely engineered and produced. Talent assuredly embodied. These women can't be stopped.

The performances — and let's face it, it's all about the vocal performances — are great. Telling how Dolly's vocals are sometimes buried in the mix, as she can dominate the proceedings. Her voice just occupies its own space. But it's a testament that these three performers, all A-listers in their own right, treated this as a true collaboration. Their voices blend beautifully, and the variety makes the listening experience all the more fun. The songs... I guess it almost doesn't matter. There wasn't a song that leaped out as the "best," they all sorta blended into the project. So, on one hand, that means this isn't really deserving the 4-star, because for me, that's a key element to any great album. But that might get overridden here. I'd classify this as a solid 3.5, but my affection for each of these artists makes this a sentimental 4.

These ladies are icons. Amazing harmonies...their voices are all quite different but mesh together so well. Instrumentation is masterful. Some of the song choices are a little to hokey. I'd love to hear what they could have done with a few more modern pieces.

well wasn't this nice! not one but THREE women on this list... a true rarity. this was really enjoyable and didn't overstay its welcome. dolly's always welcome on my album of the day!

ladies are doing it for themselves! you love to see an iconic trio of queens winning. this album was pretty enjoyable. a bit of a downer in parts and a lot of the songs sound pretty similar, but their voices and lyrics are beautiful enough to make up for it. love the harmonies here too! favorites: the pain of loving you, to know him is to love him, wildflowers, those memories of you, farther along

Some classic tracks, sung by the best around

Great voices. Traditional old country is probably my preferred style of the genre

Love these girls

Fun album from 3 legends backed by an all-star band. I'm sorry I was too busy to listen to it all the way through before the day ended.

My initial (flippant) response to seeing this album was that it must be a "9 to 5" country album. And while that's not entirely wrong, it's also not at all fair to any of the trio. And while I'm not a huge fan of this style of country/traditional music, there's no denying how great they sound, both together and apart. A shame that it took them so long to finally be able to make this album (and then another ten years or so later), but I can certainly see why this album got many (many) awards. A shame in a way that this is the only appearance by Linda Ronstadt in this collection, but at least she made it in, I suppose. And kind of wild that one of the singles on this album is a cover of a Phil Spector song ("To know him is to love him").

Loved the harmonies the three ladies bring on with their amazing voices and rich tones. While I'm not a country listener, I definetly enjoyed this album a lot!

I love some good harmonies, and they were in spades in this one.

These three voices together are pure magic. However, I was a bit tempted to give this 3 stars because the songs don't really pop, can feel a little bland at times, and there's nothing genre pushing in here. However, I have to give it props for being the best example of expert country pop vocals. Their harmonies are too good for me to put it down. I'd probably give it 3.5 if I could.

Favourite songs: Those Memories of You, Wildflowers, Hobo's Meditation, My Dear Companion, Rosewood Casket, The Pain of Loving You, Making Plans, Farther Along Least favourite songs: To Know Him Is To Love Him 4/5

Country music isn’t normally my jam, but these harmonies are lovely. It’s easy to imagine a similar effort by stars of equivalent stature today resulting more in a series of tracks with each singer trying to out “down home” and “aww shucks” each other, with redneck charm. This latter bit prompts me to round up from a 3.5* since these performers have actual charm.

Great harmony. The songs that bent toward bluegrass are the best; the country did not annoy me.

The harmonies were really pretty and I especially liked the bluegrass and Americana numbers. But mostly it made me want to listen to Brandi Carlile.

Lovely voices all, but I think Dolly dominates more than I'd like. Very well produced, but almost a bit too polished. 3.5* rounded up.

Feels like a museum piece or country music on its very best behavior and dressed up in its Sunday-go-to-meetin' clothes (see the woodwinds on "I've Had Enough"). It's perfectly pristine and no one puts a foot wrong but one thinks it woudl have been better had they done so and lightened up generally. Three better voices it's hard to imagine, though it likely should just be billed to Dolly since she seems the most front and center. And it's lovely in the way that going to church can be (the opening banjo-mandolin bit of "The Rosewood Casket" even sounds a bit like a church organ). Similar to how eating your vegetables can be pleasing (though a bit more grease and sauce mightn't have been a bad idea). Still, pretty charming and pristine overall -- a good museum piece in other words.

*Trio* is such a beautiful album. At times too beautiful for it's own good. I coukd hear some of this being performed before a quiet respectful audience, clapping respectfully between songs for a DVD that will be sold on PBS on pledge week. But they are all solid performances and there is a trio of songs right in the middle where it feels more natural "Wallflowers", "Telling Me Lies", and "My Dear Companion". (8.95) ★★★★

I love the voice of Emmylou Harris! This is a nice, pretty, quite traditional-sounding country album. A nice listen. 4 stars

boygenius for people who aren’t on lexapro

Fun album. I'll throw this on from time to time.

"Trio" is collaboration album by American singers Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. The trio attempted an album in 1970's but scheduling conflicts prevented it. This country-style album was produced by George Massenburg and included session musicians Albert Lee (guitars, mandolin) and Billy Payne (pianos, organs, harmonium). Commercially, the album hit #6 in the US and #60 in the UK and, critically, had positive reviews. Dolly Parton's "The Pain of Loving You" opens the album. Mandolin, piano and drum beat. The women harmonizing beautifully. A slide guitar and violin. This is very easy listening and enjoyable. They slow it down a bit on Phil Spector's "To Know Him is to Love Him." Softer harmonization. An interesting time signature of 12/8. I had to look that up since I couldn't quite get it. And yes, a love song and, of course, a Kona Hawaiian guitar solo. Dolly Parton takes the lead in her "Wild Flowers." The other woman on backing vocals. Violin and acoustic guitar. Dolly compares herself to wild flowers that cannot be contained. No, Dolly, you cannot be contained. It's Linda Ronstadt's turn on lead in the beautiful "Telling Me Lies." Linda Thompson wrote this and Ronstadt give a great emotional performance. A slow beat, slide guitar and piano. She just can't go on. What's not to like about this album? Tremendous individual, backing and harmony vocals by Dolly, Linda and Emmylou. The hidden all-stars might the ace-guitar and piano/organ playing by Payne and Lee. It's a pleasant and enjoyable listen that mostly everyone will like.

The way I feel about Dolly Parton's voice is the exact opposite of Billy Bragg - I could listen to her all day. Nice album with some sweet songs, especially To know him is to love him and wildflower

Wow, I haven’t updated this in a while lol. But it’s pretty nice, the ladies have nice voices together. I tend to think that Dolly as an icon overshadows her as an artist, but she does have a solid discography, and the other two are good too. B

Legends!! What a way to wrap up my 1001st album

It's always a good day with Dolly

Titans of country and they surely delivered. One of the big surprises of this project

Hade inte hört deras trio förut men jag gillade den på tåget.

I’m not a big country music fan, but the singing is fantastic

I fully recognize that by the end of the album it’s kind of the same thing over and over again but man their harmonies are just so tight and pure that I really can’t give it less than a 4. Amazing singers.

Feels like home.

Incredibly good, what else can you say?

Harmonies were solid. Enjoyed this album’s classic country sounds.

Never actually listened to a whole Dolly Parton album and it was surprisingly good and unexpected like the harmonies

Nice. Classic voices that mesh really well together and sound really fantastic together. Love the different feels to each song. Overall a very enjoyable country album that sounded really nice.

not usually a fan of this genre, but their harmonies were fantastic. refreshing to hear strong female voices. I can understand why this album is on the list

When you take a Supergroup of country singers that each emit the sounds of birds greeting the rising sun you'd think each would be a diva and want to lead the pack. Each of these masterful singers compliments the others perfectly that you don't suffer a bad track on here. 'Leave 'em wanting more' is sage advice to anyone wanting to succeed - and what Dolly, Linda, and Emmylou do here. 4/5

I feel like Moira Rose has all of these wigs

It's not typically something I would search up to listen to, but after a string of bad albums it was a relief to listen to something so very pretty.

LEGENDS

Harmony, harmony, harmony! Some of the slower songs slow down my interest, but overall I love it.

This was sweet and easy to listen to.

This album is fucking beautiful and delivers everything that you'd think it could, given the fact that it's three great artists coming together 4/5

Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and Dolly Parton - how can you go wrong? A lot of heartbreak on here, great traditional country flawlessly executed.

This isn't really my thing, but I quite enjoyed it. However, I was amazed the album was recorded in 1987. It sounds a lot more old fashioned than that. Like stepping back in time.

A fine album of beautiful music by 3 singers of unquestionable talent 4 stars

You can't argue that these three women have great voices that blend well. For me, I find the choice of songs could have had more variety so 4 stars or B- is my rating.

I feel like they've all done better things, the songwriting lacked a little for me (except for Wildflowers...) Still a cool listen. I felt like I should be getting emotional over a cold beer in a saloon.

I feel like this style of country is the cousin to Soul. I’m not sure which style, or at least what’s the name but. The themes of love and heartbreak, the composition strongly focuses on the singers voice with only complementary instrumental accompaniment. My personal enjoyment is a 3, but the lyrics and it being Dolly Parton makes it a 4

Really liked it!

I really like all three artists and have listened to almost all of their 70s albums. I was a bit worried about this release being from the 80s and how it might sound. To my surprise, it still carries that 70s vibe, and it’s really good. The album has a somewhat melancholic feel, so you need to be in the right mood, but it's a great listen.

The songs with Dolly as lead are the standouts to me but with only 2 exceptions (To Know Him and Telling Lies) this is a very good record. A little more bluegrass would have brought the energy up a bit.

El artista no es Dolly Parton. Es el trío formado por Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris.

Vocals from all three are really nice in this one. It's not something I'd listen to often, but will enjoy when I do hear parts of it again in the future.

I really enjoyed this! A very powerful trio with fantastic harmonies.

Gives the Highwaymen a run for their money

This was some quality folksy country music. Dolly is a pure talent. Enjoyed this, but don't expect to be back quickly. Low 4 / 5

Great album. Feels good to listen to. Good pipes and a chill guitar.

Wow this was so very beautiful! What incredible harmonies and ranges. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Lovely storytelling.

Great album, excellent voices and stories and kept me hooked.

A true delight, so many gems. The musicality of the album is masterful.

Very nice as a bit of chilled background country, if there was a music equivalent of country music it might be this

seemingly deliberately unrevelatory, which is just fine by me. what could be an incredible amount of pomp and circumstance gathering this level of fame and talent instead presents itself as so inevitable as if to be mundane, if beautiful (especially in the harmonies ofc). ive often played animal crossing while listening to the albums from this project, this was one of the best pairs yet for obvious reasons. lindas outfit on the cover is incredible

So beautiful. Sad but absolutely lovely.

So lush, those voices harmonizing!

Good album. Iconic trio. Not my absolute favorite but I can respect it.

The best country album I've heard on here. it's so sickeningly sweet at times, particularly in the vocal delivery, but gosh darnit doesn't it sound right. Also some great work from the instrumentalists here. I wasn't that into a couple of the tracks at the end, it felt like it ran out of ideas to deliver a solid close the album.

Amazing voices and timeless songs. Great all around.

me and the girlies about to kill a guy

This is a fun one. Rather repetitive but it’s fun, and has great vocals and harmonies from our three singers. It’s a good album, very cool.

Drottningar, algjörar drottningar. Harmoníurnar eru ethereal.

The collaboration set a precedent for future joint ventures between prominent artists. 2. **Commercial Success**: The album's commercial success, including multiple awards and chart-topping singles, demonstrated the viability of collaborative projects and opened doors for similar endeavors in the industry. 3. **Cultural Impact**: The album helped to bring country music to a broader audience, crossing over into mainstream pop and folk markets and enhancing the genre's cultural relevance. **Cons**: 1. **Niche Appeal**: While influential within its genre, "Trio" might have a more niche appeal outside the country and folk music communities. 2. **Underappreciation**: Despite its success, the album is sometimes underappreciated in broader musical discussions, overshadowed by the solo achievements of the individual artists involved. ### Overall Pros and Cons **Pros**: - **Exquisite Harmonization**: The vocal harmonies are a highlight, showcasing the exceptional talent and compatibility of Parton, Ronstadt, and Harris. - **Emotional Depth**: The lyrics are heartfelt and genuine, capturing the essence of traditional country storytelling. - **High Production Quality**: The production is polished and professional, ensuring a high-quality listening experience. - **Cohesive Themes**: The thematic consistency creates a unified and immersive album experience. - **Influential Legacy**: The album's influence on the country genre and collaborative projects is profound and lasting. **Cons**: - **Conservative Sound**: The musical and production choices are relatively safe, lacking in bold experimentation. - **Limited Variety**: The thematic and emotional range of the album is somewhat narrow, potentially limiting its appeal to a broader audience. - **Pacing Issues**: Some tracks may feel slow-paced, which might not cater to listeners preferring more dynamic tempos. - **Niche Influence**: While impactful within its genre, the album's influence might be less recognized in the broader music industry. ### Conclusion "Trio" by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris is a masterful collaboration that brings together three of the most distinctive voices in country music. The album excels in its lyrical storytelling, harmonious vocal arrangements, and polished production. Despite its conservative approach and limited thematic variety, "Trio" remains a significant work that continues to influence and inspire within its genre. The emotional depth and timeless themes, coupled with the album's high production quality, make it a standout project that showcases the power of collaborative artistry in country music.

I enjoyed this. I love “Coat of many colore” from way back, so it was nice to revisit Dolly Parton again. The best parts are when the three of them are singing three melodies at the same time. So pretty much the whole album.

Super weird coincidence but Dolly popped into my head last night when thinking about potential topics for the PowerPoint party and how she would definitely fit my definition of what is considered cool.

Before this album, the only Dolly Parton song I’ve ever listened to was 9 to 5. I do listen to some contemporary Americana, while those artist create some high quality music most of it’s not even half as good as this album.

These are three incredibly talented ladies. I have great respect for each one of them individually. All together, they are a powerhouse of a country group. None of them let their own style, though proven successful, dominate too heavily on this record, ultimately, creating a new sound that’s a beautiful mix of the three of them. This is a really fun album and I enjoyed all of it. Only wish there were some tracks that became mainstream. 4/5

Really wonderful. A little tiring at times, constant harmony is difficult for the length of a record. Still, so beautiful. Not many stand-out songs, in my opinion.

Great album. Great artist. Wish they would have done more together.

You can never go wrong with some great 3 part harmonies and pedal steel. I would have liked some more upbeat tunes, but still a beautiful record overall.

I love these women. 4

Not really my style of music, but I imagine that it would be a dream come true if it were. Certainly some megatalented singers!

I liked this better than the other Dolly Parton album I listened to for this project (“Coat of Many Colors”). Very charming and easy to listen to. One those albums which, despite never having listened to it before, feels nostalgic. 3.5 rounded up

Good country album. Beautiful voices on these three. Never heard a song by Dollie Parton before. I now see why she still tours at 80 years old. First half of the album was great, the middle was a bit boring, and the ending was lovely. Standouts: To Know Him Is to Love Him, Hobo’s Meditation, Wildflowers, Rosewood Casket, and Farther Along.

Somehow I realised I have an affinity for these three country giants. It’s a pleasant record - unpretentious and pleasant.

This is a slow, sad album that's really about heartbreak, dealing with it and moving on. I really enjoyed the different voices and perspectives. All the lyrics felt very ownable to the women singing each song. I particularly enjoyed 'Wildflowers' sung by Dolly Parton.

I really didn't expect much from this album at all. A supergroup of 80s country singers is really not something that I'd ever seek out on my own. With only a few exceptions, it's just not a style I've ever enjoyed. But wow, these three really created something special here. The harmonies between the three women are perfection. The brokenhearted and down to earth lyrics are a welcome change from male-dominated (and sometimes toxic) genre. If I was ever going to warm up to country music more generally, this would be a great starting point.

Dolly Partons got some music I like a lot so I thought I was gonna love this but I didn't 🤷‍♀️, still good just not super amazing 7/10

Pretty chill and enjoyable, dont usually like country but I started to enjoy the end

All legendary voices in harmony. Interesting that they wanted to collaborate earlier on but were contracted to different labels. Glad they stayed the course and fought through it and made this album. What American country music should be. Relaxing listen.

Damn I forgot how much I love these voices. I own solo material from all three of ‘em, so it’s only natural that when three of the most amazing singers combine it produces this angelic perfection. Three uniquely different sounding voices that somehow become one. Not a style or choice that is a routine go-to for me, but when I do go there with this collaboration all I know is I don’t wanna leave. This is real raw talent. This is the real country music.

Dolly Parton is a goddam national treasure! I never understood how she could play guitar with those long nails. This is not really my style and a lil sleepy at time, BUT I can appreciate this album is pretty great. The vocal harmonies are amazing and there’s so much emotion in the songs they transport you to a place (where you ask? I don’t know man…some country bumpkin town in Oklahoma). This also makes me hate modern pop country even more.

This is good. Unfortunately I wasn't able to give it the attention it deserves, but still enjoyed it. And you must be tripping if you think I'm giving Mesdames Parton, Ronstadt, and Harris anything less than 4*. 3.75/5

Favorite was "Wildflowers"

Though I sometimes think this list is too heavy on certain genres, I do appreciate that it does include pretty much all popular types of music. I am from the Nashville, Tennessee area. I have been here my entire life. In spite of that, I was not a huge country music fan. I have had times in my life when country music was more my thing than other times. It has never been my primary, listening pleasure. That being said, I understand how iconic all three of these wonderful women are. The album is beautiful. I’m not gonna get hyped up. Wanna drive my car 100 miles an hour. I’m not gonna request any of these songs be played it an event. still, the harmonies in the melodies of their voices really settle in with me. There is a certain comfortable feeling in this album. It’s strange, I’m not planning on listening to it in the immediate future, but I still have a sensation of “missing it” like an old friend.

Three queens of country.

Three wonderful artists in their own right. Very enjoyable album

4/6/24

Goosebumps on every song. Something about white hillbilly heartbreakers really just get me. “Those Memories” especially had that mountain holler kinda ghastly cadence thing. And that flat single note “spare” on “Hobo’s Meditation”? Get out. Powerful shit, man. “At least I could run, they just died in the sun.” 😂😂

first listen great trad country album, feels like a bygone era now

I think it hits on the "everyone harmonize" note a bit much, but I do like it when the ladies get individual songs. Lets them breathe a little. The production can be hit or miss, and it occasionally dips a little too far into Carpenter-style easy listening, but overall it's really hard to deny the star power on display. Favorite tracks: "Making Plans", "Hobo Meditation", "Wildflowers"

Lively, very good quality harmonies and melodies. But not for me.

it's Dolly

Big fan. I like Dolly but she can be a lot across the course of an album. The other two talents added a lot and helped me understand why people like the genre. I can't give this five stars because it's not to my personal tastes, but I recognize that this album is unique and noteworthy. I'll probably listen to this again.

Three wonderful singers, whose voices work really well together. From an old school Nashville that I don't generally like, but with a clear influence from the highwaymen and the travelling Tilbury. Very dated, and not the finest work from any of the three, but with a charm and grace, and such flawless vocal performances, that it couldn't get less than 4 from me!

Good album - Production, vocals, writing, and music are all solid. This is good country music, a perfect example of what the genre CAN be. 4/5

3.5/5⭐️ Best song: Telling Me Lies Worst song: Farther Along Comments: Not a big country fan but I absolutely love Linda Ronstadt’s voice and used to listen to Blue Bayou all the time. You also really can’t go wrong with a bit of Dolly

4.3 - This was great. I think I expected more though, but still fantastic.

I knew both Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt before listening to this album, but had never heard of Emmylou Harris, but it seems she's just as good a singer as those two. Together all 3 come together to create a wonderful trio that delivers a real earnestness in their songs; absolutely loved it!

This is a triple threat country album featuring American singers Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris. While the songs simping for a man grew tiresome, this album has strong musicality and powerful harmonies. This album is gives newfound appreciation for the genre.

Favourite tracks: the pain of loving you; farther along; wildflowers; I've had enough; those memories of you

cool listening to older dolly songs, plus the other women in the trio!

It has been a very long time since I listened to this album straight through; while their take on "To Know Him Is to Love Him" was the tune I recalled most readily, "Telling Me Lies", "Wildflowers", "I've Had Enough" and the trad closer "Farther Along" hit home the strongest. Should revisit more often.

9/10 solid country album on knock is kinda no standout bangers

Very good

Dolly is great!

this one was pretty cool actually. Dolly Parton is the best

Countrylegenden im Dreierpack. Das Album erschien sogar in der DDR. Jede Veröffentlichung internationaler Künstler wurde gekauft, wenn man die Gelegenheit dazu hatte und auch oft gehört. 4/5

Extremely good work

This is my supergroup 🔥

De va swag

Trio I’ve never heard of this despite liking all 3 of them. Such lovely vocals and harmonies. Each voice is distinctive yet the three combine beautifully. I think I could listen to those three voices in harmony indefinitely. Great playing and arrangements. As it was made in 1987 I was half expecting it to sound very 80s with big echoey snares etc. There are some slight elements of that with the piano on Telling Me Lies and I’ve Had Enough (the two weakest songs), but overall I love the sound. It has nice, straightforward and simple country instrumentation with a lovely warm and sympathetic sound. Simple is not a criticism, but the shuffling drums with acoustic instruments augmented by fiddle, dulcimer, mandolin etc is just great - it’s easy to ‘over musician’ this sort of thing but the restrained number of instruments works really well. This has been a very pleasant surprise. Not sure if this is overlooked just because I’d never heard of it, but it feels like an overlooked gem. Definitely going into rotation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don't say this to undermine the contributions of Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, because of course theirs are just as important—but gawd, it's always such a joy to hear Dolly Parton.

It’s a really, really nice 3 that I’m going to be biased and call a 4, just for how often I felt touched by this album. It really does just come down to how well their vocals blend together, and my bias towards this sort of general sound. I might have this sort of bias for a lot of the country albums that come up, but I’ll live with that. If nothing else, this album is great for easy listening, and to hear three great female vocalists. For my tastes, it just hit right, and sometimes, that’s all you can ask music to do.

Very pleasant. Needed to hear this for my soul.

I wish country stayed more like this. There is such a authenticity and realness to their pain and it's crystal clear in the music. The old southern twang is so charming and their voices are angelic. Not a country lover by any stretch of the imagination, but I get the impression that a lot of folk music I like today gets its roots from this. Glad to hear an album without anyone telling me how much they love crushing monsters in their big ass truck before they mud wrestle their friends to prove how HETERO they are.

Dolly Parton is a national treasure! And Linda Ronstadt has played multiple genres of music from country to pop rock, as she has done them all well. Emmylou Harris is a country star in Her own right. Singing in this album is absolutely beautiful, and this is good, honest country personally, I’m not a huge fan of country music; however, I do realize that this album is a really good one.

Lovely

Absolutely impeccable harmonies from three queens of country (or who are country-adjacent). A lovely listen.

Great record by three very talented musicians. They don’t make country music like that any more

beautiful harmonies on some beautiful tunes. fav tracks: hobos meditation, my dear companion, those memories of you

Sounds like a rough spell.

favorites: the pain of loving you, to know him is to love him, wildflowers

Awesome album

Nice easy listening music.

look, i mean you have three of the best country singers of the 20th century singing together. it cannot get better than this. this album has the best harmonies you have ever heard. sometimes the material they cover is a little less than desired, but the pure beauty of these three voices together is enough to carry any song.

I did not realize Dolly was chill like this. I was unfamiliar with her game.

I'd never heard of this album until looking over the full 1001 albums list, and I've been anxiously waiting to have it assigned to me, because it sounded like an awesome concept. I was really hoping that this would be a five star album for me, but unfortunately, it fell a little short. Right off the bat, "The Pain of Loving You" was fantastic, with its banjo riff and amazing harmonies. Musically, that was easily the best track on the album. The vocals were outstanding throughout the album, and the lyrics were great too. I loved that each of the featured artists got the chance to sing lead vocals, and all three of them sounded fantastic together. As great as the vocals and lyrics were, for me, the album just never came close to reaching that high that kicked it off. This was really good album, and I'm glad I got to listen to it, but it just fell short of being great for me.

Great!

It was very pretty.

3.5/5. Pretty easy listening, I did not mind this.

These girls got it

3.5/5 KKona girls got pipes Fav: Those Memories of You

Lovely! These girls have great voices.

Three iconic women, all of them national treasures in their own right, singing some simple but beautiful songs. The harmonies are wonderful. 4 stars.

Wonderful album with three fantastic voices. Great songs but nothing Earth shattering or breaking new ground.

A little too country for my taste, but still an amazing album.

I really needed this. Beautiful harmonies and perfect songwriting. A gorgeous morning listen while I buzzed about the house. New to me but will stay in rotation.

3 of the great ladies of country

A nice album of trio ladies who definitely know their harmonies. What you miss are some highlights but I guess that's sweet country folk for you.

This is a treat! We've been warming up for this one. Plenty of Dolly Parton, and some good Emmylou Harris picks (no Linda yet). I had no idea this existed! This so obviously needed to exist in the world because the three of them fit so well together and they sing so well together. This is my kind of old guard country. Big fan! 4/5

It was great country ballads. It reminded me of the righteous gemstones. I just like their use of lyrics and have that vagabond lifestyle I yearn for.

Really impressive levels of talent. The songs themselves didn't do too much for me but I enjoyed taking it all in.

This is enjoyable and all, but yet it somehow feels like it should be better. 3.5 getting a 4 because I do love me some Dolly and Emmylou. Linda is fine too (in more ways than one. Prime years Linda...oh my)

YES. BEAUTIFUL. Everything works so well!! best tracks: to know him is to love him, farther along, I've had enough

How did I miss this one all these years? The three featured artists have some of the best voices in music and the song selection for this record is wonderful. So glad I got to hear this one and know about it!

Jeg Digger de amerikanske countryalbumene på listen

Just what I needed after Linkin Park and Black Sabbath

They are all powerhouses in their own right, but I believe I prefer them separately. Still a good album, just not entirely my cup of tea.

There are some truly excellent songs on this album; and paired with the beautiful voices of the trio, it makes for a very good country album. A pleasure to listen to. Best tracks: Making Plans, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Hobo’s Meditation, Telling Me Lies

Hyvää akustista folkkia. Pianoballadit ei oikein sopinut mukaan mutta kesäistä juhannus settiä muuten

Marvellous

Before there was boygenius there was trio! What a supergroup. I can't quite put my finger on why I feel its more a 4 than a 5 for me, maybe some songs blended together too much in my head? It might come down to this kind of country needs a bit more zip for me to be really engaged as a listener. So solid though.

This was fun. I imagine this collab turned heads when it came out. Wildflowers was my favorite.

Great Americana. Voices blend beautifully and song selection is very good. Three individual icons who know how to work well together!

A wonderfully executed collaboration between three icons. Their voices work well together and the arrangements are great (especially for a country album from the late 80s). The lead guitar on “To Know Him Is To Love Him” is gorgeously tasteful.

A warm mug of your favorite hot beverage. Very very cozy.

3 legendary singers - beautiful harmonies, a soulful collaboration. I am not overwhelmed by this album but I am certainly charmed by it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this burst of proper music after the other nightmarish stuff I’ve had to listen to lately.

beautiful tracks the whole way through, love this collab.

Good mom music.

Before there was Boygenius, there was Trio. Three great singer-songwriter women (though more country than folk) came together for a back-to-basics album. Trio consists of a few old songs and a few new ones. The end product are simple-yet-beautiful country songs that hearken back to the traditional styling of the genre. The exception to this is Telling Me Lies, which is more of a Nashville Sound 80's ballad that was originally recorded by Linda Thompson. This is perhaps the weakest point on the album, as the women showcase their voices best on the more traditional songs, especially when they harmonize together. A strong showing from all women here. Not nearly as bad as I anticipated from an 80's country album.

Three top class singers, a great record full of country with amazing harmony singing

Country supergroup unite!

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Wildflowers, Telling me lies, I’ve had enough

One of the best country records to come out in the 80s. 8/10

It's not greater than the sum of its parts, but it's some pretty good parts. Not quite as dreary as I remember, but Those Memories of You is still by far the highlight.

Love dolly she should be the president

I love all three of these singers individually and the harmonies are beautiful, but still this album feels like it's missing something. Still a great listen. 3.5/5

Il fait beau et les oiseaux chantent

Not sure when I’d listen to this again as the music isn’t really my vibe, but overall, I did actually enjoy this album

La somme des talents n'est peut être pas à la hauteur des talents individuels. Album très agréable a l'écoute avec de belles harmonies. C'est de la country chimiquement pure. Manque peut être de hits incontournables

I didn’t realize these three ever recorded together. Though this album doesn’t really break any new ground, this is a very accessible country album grounded by tradition but infused with some pop sensibility. The vocals are outstanding of course. It’s interesting that this was recorded right at the advent of the the pop country mainstream explosion that peaked in the 90s.

While not a country fan, these ladies' voices and wonderful harmonies transcend the genre. I'd listen to them sing the phonebook!

Holy Harmonies Batman! This is far from a genre I typically enjoy but the musicality of this album cannot be denied. Masters of their craft and there's nothing else to do but sit back and enjoy.

A soothing, calm album. Their voices are beautiful together. Country isn't my genre but this was a good listen.

Ya I’m into it

I liked this one more than I thought I would. I’m big country fan but I generally haven’t gotten in to any of these ladies. Great vocals, classic country/Appalachia sound. Solid record.

Stunning album. These are three of the strongest & most memorable vocalists in country, folk, and rock. All three are legendary in their own right. Separately, these ladies sing some of my favorite songs: Dolly - Jolene, Emmylou Harris - Wayfaring Stranger, Linda Rondstandt - Blue Bayou & her mariachi songs (an ode to her Mexican-American roots). Together, they sing in perfect harmony & cover some classics. I'm also sucker for sappy country, banjo, fiddle & guitar...partly thanks to hearing country growing up & living in Nashville for 8 years (Emmylou lived in my neighborhood). I'm so happy this is one the list & I hope we get to hear their solo albums. What a lovely listen.

Extremely biased 4 for my queen dolly

El artista no es Dolly Parton. Es el trío formado por Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris.

Beautiful

An inspired collaboration featuring three icons, ‘Trio’ is expertly sung, played, and arranged but it’s essentially full of slower songs and ballads. And while these are all great, I would’ve liked some up-tempo numbers thrown into the mix for some variation, and to wake me up a little.

Three incredible artists gather to share their talents, and their voices blend here perfectly.

You put three legends in a room together and they just happen to make an excellent album.

7/10 fantastic vocal harmonies and performances all around. idk why but I’m not usually a big fan of super groups , and some of these tracks I just didn’t care for

7/10. Lotta big names, didn't really come together as an album all that well for me though.

I like me a bit of bluegrass and love these harmonies.

This album made a 50 minute drive in the snow go from unbearable to just excruciating which is honestly a pretty big feat. I couldn’t imagine a comparable album today where the three biggest artists of a genre got together to make a banger filled album. Closest thing after this was probably traveling wilburys

Loved this. Timeless country blues.

An enjoyable listen.

Very pleasant, 3 great singers and some good songs

not completely a 4 but enjoyed more than 3

DolLiLou och Ry Cooder och David Lindley och Albert Lee och det horribla countryåret 1987. Tusan.

Great album. The harmonies from the three women are beautiful.

What lovely country music, the rhythm of this album brings me happiness.

You know, from the chipper happy picture of the three of them on the cover, you'd never know how sad and lonesome they all are. And of course they are definitely lonesome, not lonely. Country folks don't get lonely, they only get lonesome. This is one thing about classic country I've learned. The other thing I've learned is that country folks are all about projecting a glamorous and happy getup, but there is pain in them there hills, big heavy pain. These three ladies are at the ends of their careers, but the music sounds classic as ever. Beautiful, sad, lonesome music! I swear these ladies could kick the Dixie Chicks' asses. I'm sorry ya'll had to get old, but I understand. More than ever.

I was completely unprepared to see this album here and suprised that there were such crazy country unions. The atmospere that album creates is for the calme morning with cup of coffee and someone you love. Despite all the ablazing and heartbreaking voices(especially Dolly Parton's one) i liked only a few songs that really stucked in my mind and made me reflect for a while. The overall sound is not for the permanent listening(pretty boring). But I couldn't give it 3 or even less just because music is very mild and cosy. So 4

Their voices blend beautifully and the tunes aren’t half bad. A lovely little jaunt this was.

It's a shame we only got one of these. Best track: The Pain of Loving You

Probably the greatest country collaboration that will ever happen.

Great harmonies

okay so, I honestly REALLY love Dolly Parton she’s a gem and a half, just an incredible person in general, I really do love her but her music just isn’t really for me I love the more western side of music like Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson but I’m having a harder time with country stuff I can still appreciate the effort that went into it, and hey, some of it actually sounded pretty great in my ears, this album sounds like an 8/10 but Dolly Parton herself is far greater than such ratings :)

Nothing to complain about here, 3 peak performers in their genre and they sing very well together. I don’t want these kinds of songs all day everyday but this was a well composed selection.

Such a great collaboration

4.2 - Really, what’s not to like? Three songstresses still at their vocal primes come together to sing plaintive country gospel songs of love and loss. Yes, it’s earnest, sometimes excessively so as on “I’ve Had Enough”, but the power of the arrangements and performances backs up all that emotion to make this record authentic and compelling.

Turns out I like dolly and country. Prefer the jingle jangles to the ballads but I got played a lot extra so not sure what's on album

enjoyed

This is the country that I like

no doubt these three voices go incredibly well together, and this is an album of some solid country songs. the musicians play with grace, and you can tell the singers are enjoying creating together. I’m more familiar with Dolly and Emmylou, tho I’m sure we’ll get more chances to hear Linda through this list. as usual, the ballads didn’t do much for me, but I enjoyed the rest. will I enjoy ballads more when I get into my 40s? 50s? never? 3.5 for me on this one.

Felt like an album length version of that meme where men country singers talk about ice cold beer, fishing, and trucks and women country singers talk about hating their husbands.

These ladies can h-a-r-m-o-n-i-z-e Was a lovely listen through, but I probably won't be returning to this one anytime soon, nothing stuck out to me, even though it was delightful. These ladies are iconic, and I can see why they're on the list as a trio. Id be interested to know what went down collaboration wise on this one. Whether it was written for them, or if they took major creative decision making in lyrics, writing, and instrumentation.

Ever wondered if there was a Boygenius for middle-aged country singers? No, of course you haven’t, but Dolly, Linda, and Emmylou were way ahead of you here. To be fair, it’s not a bad sounding album, with a relaxed sound paired with traditional lyrical themes of country. But nor did anything really stay with me. A fine listen, but nothing that special.

Pretty good reminder of what country music used to be like. Not a single truck in sight. Still, can't help but think there wasn't enough variety - I know there's only so much you can do with the genre, and the difference in the three leads did make it more interesting, but it could do with a little more jooj. Give Dolly Parton a gun.

This one is a little of a mixed bag because on the one hand there are some good songs here and all three singers have great voices, but this album also sounds old. It’s deeply stuck in country music sounds that are rooted in bluegrass and gospel. I think it would have sounded dated in 1987, let alone today. Probably a 2.5?

Records.

gonna tell my kids this is boygenius. 3.5

Excellent and a long time coming. They mix well and each showed off strengths. Not my favorite genre of music, but I thrive off of listening to artists who are passionate and talented. Would certainly listen again. 3+

Country.

This is alright...Not nearly as good as I thought Coat of Many Colors was, though

Good but not memorable

The female country version of the Traveling Wilburys I was not aware existed until this album was generated for me. This is not my genre so this is not something I'd normally listen to voluntarily. All three of their voices blend beautifully, but Dolly's does really stand out the most prominently on basically every track. I don't really know how to rate this. It's beautiful but it's also Not For Me so I can't really say I enjoyed listening to it. 3.5 rounded up (the .5 is for the pleasant sounds of the resonator guitar that I first thought were produced by a balalaika before googling)

Decent sounding album, but it seems like a waste to get three different acclaimed artists together just to sing cover songs. The song compositions are so basic. It feels like the artists had no creative input in making them (aside from Parton who wrote a couple of the tracks). My favorite track was "Farther Along". Also shout-out to Jean Ritchie, the writer of the track "My Dear Companion" and a great traditional folk singer. 2.5 stars.

I love country music. I can listen all day and night. Great singers, great harmonies, great hooks, but my gold it’s all the same. I get why they’ve done this album and what it has to offer, just needs a few upbeat ones. But again, I love country music and legends are involved. That paved the way. Made it more accessible. And look still great songs and great album.

Pretty average not Dolly standard

Dolly and 3 part harmonies, win win

Mittelmäßig

Liked the straight forward country sound

On paper, this should be an easy winner. You get three of the biggest and most respected voices in country and folk music, and all of them sound great throughout the album. The harmonies are beautiful, the performances are professional, and there’s never any doubt about the talent involved. The strange thing is that the album itself feels less special than the lineup suggests. Everything is pleasant and well executed, but very little sticks with me once it’s over. I enjoyed listening to it, yet I kept feeling like a collaboration between artists of this caliber should have left a stronger impression.

For some reason, this album (as well as the Trio's 1999 follow-up) just never quite hit for me. I can't really explain it other than to say that it's a case of the whole never quite living up to the sum of its parts. The songs are gorgeous (though selections have always seemed rather on the safe, unchallenging side to me), as are the voices, of course. But each of these artists has produced equally gorgeous, far more memorable songs on her own. I can't imagine anyone would actively DISlike listening to this album. But don't raise your expectations too high. Pretty much any solo album by any of these three national treasures is likely to be more satisfying.

boring

-Not my piece of cake but dolly parton is amazing

3/5. With the two albums I’ve had of hers so far on this generator I’m realizing that I love a ton of Dolly Parton songs, but never really completely click with her full albums. Though Dolly is only 1/3 of the equation on this album which also features Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, both of whom I am admittedly not familiar with. And though as I mentioned I didn’t love the full album there’s still a good amount of highlights like “to know him is to love him” or “rosewood casket.”

Another surprising sorta-country album. The three singers’ voices work together well and most of the songs are pretty solid.

Kinda boring at parts but I admit there's some really good singing here and enough songs i liked for it to be like a 3 star

As someone who grew up on late 90’s early 2000’s country, this was refreshing. The harmonies and the instrumentals work well together and embody the spirit of country way more than some of the more modern country. That being said, about halfway through the sounds blend together and all begins to sound the same. Likes: The Pain of Loving You; To Know Him is to Love Him; Wildflowers

very cool, i got a glimpse of her music beautiful gowns hahah jk is sweet music

Honestly enjoyed more than I though i was going to. I really liked the instrumentation and harmonies, however it did all blend into one or two after the whole album was done. Not good enough that id relisten per say but I liked listening to it.

Pleasant singing voice, but really for me.

Trio is a pretty solid album but admittedly some very basic country music. I have varying degrees of knowledge involving all three of the singers involved on this record. Dolly Parton i know the most about of these due to not only listening to one of her albums for this project but also listening to the podcast about her, Emmylou Harris i don't know as much about but i have also heard one of her albums and Linda Ronstadt, i don't know much about her and i also never heard much of her work. The album itself really does bring out their great vocals but everything else about this album really isn't that special. Good album but not enough reasons for me to really recommend it. Best Song: Farther Along Worst Song: Wildflowers

Im not into country but the folksy vibe and dollys voice were nice

Im not sure if its because I just finished new 3 Drake albums back to back but I liked this. This has squashed my beef with Emmylou for her participation in the crimes against my ears on Grievous Angel. Dolly is just too charming to dislike and these gals work well. Favorite Song: Those Memories of You

The album mostly sounds like one 38 minute song. Not a whole lot of variety or dynamic changes. But it is one extremely pleasant 38 minute song. Excellent vocals and harmonies, and very clean production. Won’t be everyone’s favorite, but I don’t know how you could hate this either. An extremely pleasant 3.4/5.

The voices and harmonies are breathtaking at times....the songs themselves, not so much unfortunately.

Trio is an album created by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris. The three had collaborated for years; there are several singles from pairs on various individual solo albums. This album was their first extensive collaborative effort. Trio was remarkably successful, both critically and commercially. The album is filled with "traditionalist country" songs, showcasing the vocals of these three incredible voices, in stirring solos and rich harmonies.

Decent

This album makes me think of Granddad; he was a fan of Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris (and Dolly, too, I think, though perhaps not as much), and I think he had this album, or at least albums by the 3 artists. At the time (later 1980s), I was still dismissive of country music, but it wasn't long before I started to reconsider, and I think some of these traditional (retro?) country albums that came out starting in the 80s might have helped me to appreciate (traditional) country music more. Certainly can't fault the singing and harmonizing. Well, except that I don't *love* Dolly Parton's singing, but it's good, and the other 2 are great. As for rating it, I guess it's between a 3 and a 4, but I think I'm going to go with a (high) 3 because, while it's nice enough (indeed, very nice), it doesn't really stand out to me as exceptional or particularly memorable or notable. Except maybe in helping to extend/expand a broader appreciation for country music to people like me. ;)

Good album good voices has some spiritual touch and some old school love song and old vibes but in a good way great album a solid 6.1/10

Lovely harmonies. Some fun songs and some great ballads.

Dull and forgettable country.

This was lovely. Pleasant harmonies and nice songs. No complaints.

Not a country fan, but they've got some nice vocals. It's a shame what modern country has devolved into.

Very competent but a little too easy listening to get me excited.

Overall, not a bad album. It is pretty chill just leaving it in the background, but not necessarily full of party songs. Dolly Parton is great, though, so it was nice while the album was playing.

This was a good album just not my cup of tea but cool to get them all on one album
